Disclaimer: This is set pre-everything. This Connor is a prototype to the ‘real’ prototype. The time this takes pace is a year before Kamski leaves CyberLife in 2028. Connor is just an idea, because figuring out and engineering something is a constant cycle of fixing and implementing.

You are born.

“Can you hear me?”

Your eyelashes bat softly against your cheeks, the movement similar to how a butterfly would expand its wings after having landed.

Your lips move a fraction, the movement stiff and unnatural; your eyes open fully now, and above you are blinding lights that are shaped octagonally. They are shining down on you, and you tilt your head to the left, aware of the feeling of hair touching your shoulder.

Everything was so white and pristine- and when your eyes shifted away from the lights, you could see small molecules of aerosols of dust reflecting from the light around you.

“I’ve had her stored away for a while now,” the same voice says, a fondness ringing out in the last rise of each word.  

The eyebrows furrow, and you turn your head to the left, where the voice is coming from. It’s male and it sounds slightly nasally and rough. There, sitting at desk is a man, typing furiously on a laser keyboard. His glasses are perched on his nose, and part of his hair is pulled into a bun in the back.

Next to him is another male. Although, oddly enough, you knew he wasn’t like the other man with the glasses.

He was standing, and his eyes were observing you with curiosity, brown eyes staring into yours. He, too, tilts his head just slightly.

You blink.

Once, twice. The corners of your mouth move up in a friendly smile, “Hello.”

Your voice is light, and it’s wonderful to hear on ears- it’s light and amiable.

The man with the glasses looks up from his typing, gray eyes planting on you. The man pushes his chair back, and he uses his feet to shuffle towards you. You watch him with curiosity as he comes face to face with you.

The man behind him is still silent and is still watching you.

You push off on the table you are lying upon, and a message pops up in your vision. “Aluminum alloy,” you say automatically, your eyes flickering down to the table. It’s a metallic gray, and you register it to be sixty five degrees fahrenheit, or as the metric system calls for, eighteen degrees celsius.

“Very good,” The man praises, all the while smiling, “Do you know where you are, honey?”

You tilt your head again in the other direction. Your eyes flicker about you, transparent floor to ceiling walls with a stark white back wall. You were in a 10ft x 6in room, with a 25 foot depth. Where the man had been sitting, monstrous electronics sat- like the room, they were sleek and a pure white. A logo ran along the backs of the monitors, and it reads CyberLife.

You could hear so many things: the whirring of machines just seven feet away, the beeping of a motor, the humming from the lights above, across the way somewhere, the lever of a coffee machine being pushed down on, and- the most fascinating thing, you decided- was the slow and rhythmic breathing of the man in front of you.

“I am in a laboratory at CyberLife Tower.” You say calmly, as you train eyes with the gray-eyed man. Your hands fold on your lap, “Who are you?”

A simple question.

“I’m Elijah Kamski.”

“Elijah,” you repeated slowly. Such an odd name, you think, and within less than a second, you begin to spew out information. “Elijah was a prophet. He is mentioned in the Book of Kings. He lived in a northern kingdom of Israel,” you say instinctively, watching as gray eyes look on in approval, “and he was said to have lived circa 9th century BC.”

“Very good,” Elijah repeated, gray eyes urging you to continue. So you did.

“You were born on the 27 of July in 2002, and graduated school early with an IQ of 171. You attended the University of Colbridge under the mentorship of Professor Amanda Stern. You founded CyberLife when you were just sixteen.” Your lips move as a rapid pace as you speak, “You are currently twenty seven years of age.”

Elijah nodded, his hand raising to let it hover under his nose as he leaned back into his chair.

“Who am I?” You ask suddenly, and you hear the man who is still standing shift in his stance.

Elijah says a name- your name.

You blink again, and then you repeat it. It tastes wonderful on your lips- and you enjoy the way your mouth moves when you push out each syllable. It gives you an odd satisfaction, almost making you feel honored to have something that personally belonged to you.

You pull up a search engine as you say it again, results telling you the origin of your name: mentions, other females that have the same name, social media posts containing it, the Latin and Greek root, the pronunciation, and variations if it.

You dart your eyes to the brown haired man that was watching you with interest. “You are Connor.”

He didn’t reply, but you noticed that on the side of his head was an indentation of a circle, and it contained a light. It was turning, once, three times. “You are an android.”

He wore black suit bottoms and a button down shirt; on the left side, right where his heart would be had he been human, a blue, glowing triangle was stitched expertly. The same illuminated color fell just above his right elbow in a band of some sort.

Something deep in your mind was itching at you, “Have we met before?”

His LED light turned once more, flicking to a red color before it changed to blue. Then, he spoke. “No, we haven’t.”

His voice was smooth and clear, almost honey-like, but with an edge. “We haven’t?” Your voice drips into disappointment, but he doesn’t say anymore- his body manner speaking volumes of his hesitance. He seems too familiar.

You were unaware of the fact that you were bare; not a single stitch of clothing covering your modesty. Though, many would argue and say that you did not have modesty; for you were a machine, and machines do not feel anything- shame, least of all.

You turn towards Elijah and quietly wait until he asks you a question. He had been watching the small interaction, completely immersed and making mental notes of how well your communication had evolved- as if you had a mind of your own.

“She’s a beauty, isn’t she Connor?” Elijah complimented, rubbing small circles into his right cheek with his thumb.

“She’s very pretty,” Connor confirms, voice sincere.

You look at the android looming in the room, his presence bringing you an odd comfort, “Thank you,” you reply indifferently, the compliment not affecting you in any way. You blink a few times, and your brows furrow for a second time in the duration of your conversation.

Elijah is still watching you intently, his steely gray eyes following you small movements on your artificially constructed face. “Do you have a question?”

“Yes,” you answer truthfully quick.  Elijah nods, motioning you to speak. “You mentioned that you had me stored away for some time. What do you mean by that?”

Elijah was expecting this, and he gave you a small smile. “You were my first creation,” He shifts in his chair crossing his legs, the expensive fabric of his pants rustling as he did so, “my golden child of sorts.”

Your mouth opens to form a little ‘o’, “Am I an android as well? Like Connor?” You looked at Connor when you said this, the familiarity of him not having been shaken.

Elijah nods, “You are.”

You suddenly need to know more, questions popping in your mind second after second. “When was I created?”

“Shortly after I moved to Detroit. So sometime around 2019,” he explained, “but all you ever been has been a prototype to what inventions followed after you.”

“Oh.” You frown, “But why did you put me away?”

“You were originally made for a domestic lifestyle. A sort of 1950s housewife. You were a shock to the world- after all, you were the first AI bot that moved and spoke fluidly, like your human counterpart,” Elijah then sighs, “but you still had many technicalities embedded in you. By this time we were already working on other projects, other androids that were better.”

Your face falls and eyes narrow as he tells you this.

Elijah moistens his cracked lips with his tongue, “Don’t take it so personal, sweetheart. Things evolve. You were a sensation- the reason why CyberLife is here today. You have had a wonderful purpose in this world.”

This world. You smile once more, “Yes, I suppose you are right. Everybody has a wonderful purpose in this world.”

Elijah cocks his head to the side, never taking his eyes off you, “Come here, Connor.” The male android saunters forward immediately after the demand falls from Elijah’s lips. “This is all so interesting- I can’t believe I never thought of doing this before,” Elijah tells no one in particular.

“Of what?” Connor asks in a tone of suspicion, forcing you to wonder if Connor’s questions were multiplying in a rapid rate as yours were.

Elijah’s hand moves back and forth between the two of you, “You see,” he begins, standing from his chair as he walks to the monitors to retrieve a tablet, “Connor here is a prototype to a prototype we’re currently on,” he directs this comment to you now.

“Like how I am?” You inquire, feeling the cool air conditioning on your skin.

Elijah smirks down at his device, “Something like that.” As he scrolls on, you and Connor are practically having a robotic stare down, neither of you blinking or moving- the scene would have been easily unsettling had others besides the three of you been in the room.

“As I was saying, I was experimenting around with Connor’s initial program, and I wanted him to have a main drive, a sort of focal point. A ‘cornerstone’, if you will.”

Connor pertained handsome features, and you gazed upon him with wonder. He was tall and slim, his skin tone a blend of ivory with a rosy undertone, a strong jaw with a straight nose, rounded eyebrows with observant brown eyes. He had tawny freckles that littered around his face, some dark while others were faded. His rich brown hair is parted to the left side, and you couldn’t help but feel adoration for the small piece of hair that hangs loose on his forehead.

I know you, you thought quietly.

Elijah continued- “Other models have basic functions- theirs mainly pertaining to their work and civil duties… mundane drives. But I never once thought to insert a drive with an emotional setting.” He sets his tablet down on his lap, “The familiarity you are both feeling isn’t something you should be afraid of.”

You want to reach out and touch Connor, the urge to feel his skin on yours becoming slightly overwhelming.

“Is Connor my cornerstone?” You ask the question and your tone is laced with awe, so you reach out to indulge yourself. You raise your bare arm, and it’s the first time you see your skin tone, so different compared to his, the undertones altered. Your hand comes to lay on the left side of his chest, and beneath your fingertips, you could feel the rapid pump of his regulator.

Connor is frozen while watching you, his indicator displaying blood red, while yours is a burning yellow. He could feel the sensation of your hand against his chest, the small pressure. Everything about you was so small compared to him; he was sharp and jagged, while you were soft and delicate.

“Yes and no.” Elijah replies to you, and Connor could hear the grin on him. Connor’s eyes traveled to your loose hair, how it was parted perfectly down the middle and how it curled sightly at the ends. Your skin was free of any blemishes, not a single mark on you, as if you were  brand new.

“Like I said before, you were my first. I never thought of programming you with sentimental values. And to clarify some things, I never put you away for a long period of time. I take you out periodically and reprogram you- see if I can alter what is already set into you. And I have.” You turn your head a small degree in wonder, ears listening to the man beside you as your eyes burn into the brown ones in front of you. “But to answer your question, yes, Connor is your cornerstone, just as you are Connor’s. He just wasn’t yours in the beginning.”

Elijah is watching the gears turn in Connor head, the tablet revealing lines of code and the thought process in him.

“When we finally constructed you, Connor, I was hit with a sort of… nostalgia, for lack of a better word. You are CyberLife’s newest idea, and it made me remember who started it all in the beginning. I made sure to slip this small code in when no one was looking- make you feel something, other than your fucking love to your work, something that drives you other than your missions.”

Elijah then walks out the room, his presence leaving not striking any warning messages. You don’t even care, because you are too focused of the male standing in front of you.

Your eyes look down at his hands, and with your free hand, you reach down to take his in yours. You raise it so that his hand cups your cheek, and you appreciate the feel of his cold skin against your cold skin. You practically nuzzle into his hand, so much so that you turn your head to give the heel of his palm a small kiss.

His LED light is still red, and his lips are pressed into a tight line, so many emotions flashing into his eyes: confusion, fondness, anger, denial.

You smile lovely at him, “You are meant to have a wonderful purpose in this world, Connor.”

Connor cannot speak. He can only think, think and deny what you are, you are an android constructed to look and speak like a female. You are an android, made with the same parts like him. Nothing more, nothing less.

But why did he feel a stir of something foreign resonate deep within him?

He only had one primary directive and that was to be successful in whatever mission is presented to him.

But you have no mission at the moment, a voice tell him, and he pushes it away.

Elijah returns, and the glass door he pushes on to enter hisses as it slowly returns back to its place as it shuts behind him. He moves to stand next to you, and in his hand is a gun. He offers the black handle to Connor.

Connor’s eyes look up at Kamski in question, but doesn’t vocalize it. He tears his hand away from your cheek, and takes the weapon into his hand. He steps back from you, the small pressure on his chest escaping as he does so, and he can finally breathe.

Being around you, he decided, was suffocating. The heavy object in his hand is comfortable, much more to his preference. “Today, we will be testing your cognitive fidelity, Connor.”

Connor looks at you. You are watching him with an emotion no one has ever looked at him with. The moment he had been awoken from his eternal slumber, he found men and woman in lab coats to be taking down notes with disinterest in their eyes, marking off boxes on their clipboards as they had him perform mediocre tasks.

You are looking at him with affection, love pouring out of your eyes as a smile graces your lips. The image before him reminds him of a painting, and the very painting pops into his vision.

The Birth of Venus, the title reads.

There, Venus is unclothed, her arms laying delicately over her breasts and genitals. She was born, and Connor couldn’t help but compare you to her, because in some twisted and cruel way, you were just born too.

“I want to test and see if the code has worked at all; make you something other than the obedient machine that you are, Connor. Make infatuation happen between the oldest and the newest androids.” Kamski scoffs at his own words, “Poetic, if I say so myself.”

Elijah settles into his chair once more, but his time, he rolls back, placing space between the two of you and himself. “Shoot her, Connor.”

Connor is blinking, and he can easily pull the trigger if he applies just the slightest pressure. But he can’t.

Not while you are gazing upon him like if he were some god.

When the words pass Elijah’s lips, your smile falters, and now a warning blares in front of your vision as you watch Connor step back and aim towards you, the inside of the barrel of the gun greeting you.

You are scared, and a bitter taste stretches into your mouth at the thought.

But then, when you meet Connor’s eyes once again, and you lose all sense of worry. You just feel him. And he is your home.

You ignore the weapon that he is pointing at you, and your faltered smile is brought back to life once more.

You love him.

You love him, and you don’t care if it was some sort of code that was imbedded in you for a guinea pig experiment. All you care for is Connor.

And while the weight of Elijah’s order hangs heavy in the room, while Connor’s LED is flashing a rapid yellow and red, you open your mouth to speak. “It’s lovely, isn’t it?”

Connor is staring straight at you, watching as you move to stand. Your body was perfectly crafted, moving whimsically as you beelined straight to him- pushing the outstretched hand away. Your face is calm and hopeful. “We have a purpose in this world, and I think that is beautiful. Completely different purposes- and yet, we are anchored to one another. It’s in your backstory like its in mine,” your face leans into his, and Connor’s lips twitch upward in recoil.

You ignore this though, because if you could feel this much love for him, you knew that he must feel the same towards you. You press your chest up to his, ignoring the looming presence in the corner.

Connor is stiff and unresponsive, but the allure of your lips call to him, and he slowly, slowly leans into you and presses his thin lips to yours.

If he were human, he would have sighed into your mouth. He feels the way your nose softly bumps into his, and he closes his eyes. He leans into your touch, the hand that hold the gun falls lax and he moves it to rest on your bare hip.

He could feel gray eyes on him, and that was when he stiffened once more. Shoot her.

You feel as he once again stiffens, but you ignore it. You move your lips on his despite his being unresponsive unlike the way they were mere seconds ago. You allow each faux human emotion within you to pour out on your lips.

You are unaware of the feeling of cold metal angling on your side, completely engrossed with the feeling of sensation.

Elijah looks down at his tablet, and is disappointed when the sound of the gun goes off. He sighs as he takes off his glasses, folding them and placing them into his breast pocket.

He looks up to find Connor enveloping you as you are limp in his arms. You are crying, and blue blood ribbons down your bare thighs.

Connor’s face is stony, but he still raises a hand to stroke the side of your face. His jaw is clenched tightly.

You feel fingers lightly touching your cheek, “This world is beautiful,” you choke out, a bit of blue blood dribbling from the corner of your mouth, “and I am grateful I’ve gotten to meet you.”

You are still looking at him as if he were the light of the world, intimacy Elijah has never seen before. Connor’s face is apathetic, his mouth opening a fraction to say something- anything, and when he does, Elijah just shakes his head in deeper disappointment.

“We are machines,” he tell you, “and we are incapable of feeling.”

You smile sadly, raising a shaky hand up to touch the small wisp of hair that frames his face, “I think I love you,” you whisper, telling him and only him, because it is just you and Connor, and nothing else. “I think I love you,” you repeat to him solemnly, louder this time, “and it terrifies me.”

Lifeless eyes stare up at him. He lets you go, allowing your body to crash with the pristine floor as he steps away from you.

Mission Successful, a message tell him.

He looks to Elijah, and all Elijah sees is a ruthless machine that is stained with blue blood. “I’ll call someone to clean this up.” Gray eyes peer down at your naked and bleeding form, “You frighten me at times, Connor.”

“You do not need to fear me, Elijah. I am not programmed to hurt anyone without a given motive.” The color of his indicator is a steady blue.

Elijah shakes his head in disagreement, toeing the side of your body, his voice venomous. “You are everything that is wrong with this fucking company.” He looks up at Connor, “Pull up your analysis and delete this meeting in your log.”

Connor stares off into space, and after two whole minutes, he blinks. Brown eyes meet gray eyes, “Hello, Mr. Kamski.”

Elijah nods, breathing in deeply as if this has happened many times before. “What happened in the last half hour, Connor?”

Connor’s LED light flashes yellow and then black to blue, “I’m afraid I do not know.”

“Are you lying to me?” Elijah questions, a dark brow rising.

Connor blinks and responds automatically, “No. I am programmed to answer truthfully.” Your eyes are still planted on him, glassy and lifeless, but Connor does not look down at you whatsoever, completely ignoring you, in fact.

“Return to your part of the building. I’ll have someone send you over when I’ve constructed her again. We’ll have another go Friday.”

Elijah turns to draw one single line on a paper, and it is littered with tally marks- a total of six altogether.

Connor obeys and leaves the room, thinking nothing of the odd statement. But distant words echo in his mind as he does so, and they are not his.

They are female, light and amiable.

This world

It is a resounding chant that does not leave his head, and Connor did two self diagnostics to see where it was coming from, but he doesn’t find anything.

He enters an empty and dark laboratory, walking up a raised pedestal and sits on the metallic chair that faces the glass doors.

He slowly feels his bio-components whirring off, and he could feel the slowing down of his thirium pump heart regulator.

This world, the female voice tells him as if she were whispering it into his ear as he nears the end, is beautiful.

The entertainment industry in America is imbued with racist ideology, and gaps in representation and wages between actors of color and white actors are reigning free. Black actors are sometimes more successful than their white counterparts, but even then they’re not being recognized or compensated in the same way. I observe this from a privileged lens as a white person, and though I have struggled economically and still do, I have the privilege that comes with whiteness. Here I will attempt to communicate some of what I see as disparities and racist ideologies in the American entertainment industry today.

  I saw the most recent Star Wars movie “Solo” when it came out on Netflix. Alden Ehrenreich plays Han Solo, our lovable, orphaned, thief-but-for-the-right-reasons protagonist. He’s moving up through the ranks, stealing for the noble cause of one day being reunited with his adolescent crush Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke).  Donald Glover plays Lando Calrissian, the owner of the Millennium Falcon. His methods for acquisition of the Falcon are under constant scrutiny, and he is portrayed as the crook, with little back story. When white writers Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan created this story, did they intend to cast Lando as a black man, or was it perhaps the casting agency who thought Glover would be good for this supporting role?

When Donald Glover was offered the job, he faced a choice. Did he want to be in the new Star Wars movie if he played a thief? There is a sacrifice made when an activist musician and comedian takes a high caliber role that potentially stereotypes him based on race. Certainly the circumstances are unique for each actor, but when a black entertainer is given an opportunity to succeed, but there is a wage gap between black and white entertainers, as well as male and female actors, and intersections of these different categories work like a confusing math problem that becomes easy to distill: there is disparity.

Sure, films like Black Panther are working against subjugation by taking black characters into the forefront of the picture, but what goes on behind the scenes is still inequity. It is generally stated that Chad Boseman who plays Black Panther earned $500,000 for his appearance in the film, and around 2-3 Million for Avengers, Infinity War. Robert Downey Jr. however, earned $500,000 for the first Iron Man, and earned a sickening $40-$50 Million for Infinity War. (QUORA.COM, 2019) (MENXP.COM, 2019) 

Entertainers with more weight in the industry based on previous successes gain more creative independence and move up in the income ranks based on that success. But roles and incomes are limited for black actors in the mainstream, and when you see a black actor or hear a black musician, what parts of their blackness are being commodified and to what end can they be undervalued as artists when their bodies and voices are being harnessed to entertain?

According to Forbes, Black Panther grossed over 1.3 Billion Dollars, more than Titanic, one of the highest grossing films to date (Forbes, 2018), Whereas the first Iron Man grossed less than half that, close to 318 Million. (Box Office Mojo, 2019). There are some lurking variables affecting the difference in Boseman and Downy Jr.’s salaries in Infinity War, like that fact that Downey Jr. has appeared in more films than Boseman (IMBD, 2019), but the key factor in the wage gap here is clearly white privilege. This phenomenon is hard to name because acknowledging it opens up hundreds of years of dialogue on oppression and dispossession which is painful to talk about, but it is impossible to ignore if you want it to change.  

Coincidentally, Donald Glover’s hit song This is America was co-written by Swedish computer Ludwig Göransson , who also wrote the score for Black Panther. Göransson  speaks to that experience in an interview with Complex.com last year:

“What I’ve been working with, and really trying to be aware of, is how you take traditional music from these different countries and put electronics and big orchestra on top of that while keeping the same sounds,” he said. “It’s been really challenging. I went to west Africa and South Africa for a month to do research and record a bunch of different musicians for the score. I brought that back to my studio and, for the past year, I’ve been figuring out ways to preserve the essence of that music and try to make it cinematic to fit this superhero universe.” (COMPLEX.COM, 2018)

So where are these nameless musicians from Africa credited in information on this blockbuster’s soundtrack? Nowhere that I could find. Were they paid anywhere close to what Göransson received as the Composer for the film?Do they receive royalties from their performances?

Michelle Alexander speaks to new manifestations of racism in her book The New Jim Crow, a book which according to a 2018 article in The New York Times is banned in prisons in North Carolina and Florida. (Bromwich, 2018)

“In the era of colorblindness, it is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. So, we don’t. Rather than reply on race, we use our criminal justice system to label people of color “criminals” and then engage in all the practices we supposedly left behind. Today is it perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans…we have not ended the racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.“ (Alexander, 2012)

  And that’s exactly what is going on in the entertainment industry today. We are redesigning racism with wage gaps, divisions of screen time and biased survival in apocalyptic pictures (Infinity Wars,) and portraying black actors as thieves and sidekicks (Solo,) while black rappers in the mainstream sing about prison time, womanizing, gold chains, and street drugs, perpetuating these images to the public. In Lil Baby’s song Pure Cocaine, which is #24 on the Billboard rap charts as of April 5th, 2019, he says:

“When your wrist like this, you don't check the forecast/Every day it's gon' rain (every day it's gon' rain), yeah/Made a brick through a brick, I ain't whip up shit/This pure cocaine (this pure cocaine), yeah/From the streets, but I got a little sense/But I had to go coupe, no brain, coupe no brain/I ain't worried 'bout you, I'ma do what I do/And I do my thing, do my thing”

  Chris Holmlund makes observations of the entertainment industry’s racist ideology flattening the Whoopi Goldberg into a tool for the white protagonists to connect in the movie Ghost in his book Impossible Bodies:

“Garishly dressed and made up, Oda Mae [the crook turned accessory to the white protagonist’s happiness, played by Goldberg] looks ridiculous when she visits Molly at Sam’s urging. “I don’t see what’s wrong with what I’m wearing,” she complains, voice off over a bird’s eye shot of Manhattan. 

The next shot shows her striding along, resplendent in a badly fitting rose-colored jacket, black flounced skirt, black stockings, white net gloves, bouffant black wig, and rakish hat. Her legs splay apart awkwardly above spike heels. In African leggings she later seems more at ease, but she never looks as deliciously fragile as Molly [Demi Moore] does in her pixie haircut, baggy sweaters, and spaghetti strap T-shirts.

            No wonder, then, that Oda Mae lends her body to the dead Sam when he wants to hold and kiss his wife one last time. “O.K., O.K., you can use me,” she says, “You can use my body. Just do it quick before I change my mind.” Orlando at least submersed himself in her, before reemerging in ghostly superimposition to hear his wife’s response. Sam simply replaces her, obviating the lesbianism implicit in a first, teaser, closeup of Molly’s white hands held by Oda Mae’s black ones, by suddenly appearing in medium shot to wrap his strong arms protectively around his tremblingly eager widow’s torso.” (Holmlund, 2002)

This example from the 1990 film may show that movies have come some way in representation of black characters, but Lando’s role in connecting Han Solo with his love Qi’ra seems to follow a similar trajectory. Epigenesis is painful, and there are many steps back accompanying each step forward in how ideologies can be reshaped. In 2010 there was one such instance of painful steps backward which instigate change in the 15th annual broadcast of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which aired on CBS. A summation of the event from The Color Complex by Kathy Russell-Cole, and Drs. Midge Wilson and Ronald Hall follows:

“Over 9 million viewers, the largest audience yet, tuned in to watch thirty-four female models, six of whom were women of color, parade around in lingerie and little else. The display of wares was organized around six differently themes sets, and in each, even the country-themes one featuring a barn and blond wigs, the subset of “girls” participating was racially integrated-with one notable exception. The single themed presentation in which the producers saw fit to showcase only the six models of color was the segment entitled “Wild Thing.” The setting was a jungle and the models entered wearing nothing more than African wraps on bodies covered in tribal body paint. From the African-American community could be heard a collective moan: “Seriously? Again, you put us back in the jungle?”

Since before the Civil War, the dominant White culture has abused and manipulated images of African Americans, usually for the purposes of fear, humor (i.e. what Whites thought was amusing,) and marketing.” (Russel-Cole/Wilson/Hall, 2013)

Awareness of these disparities is the key to unwinding what large entertainment corporations are continuously feeding to the public. I encourage you to question the lyrics on the radio, and ask yourself who is writing them, who is singing them, and for what reason. Watch the behaviors of actors. What are they promoting? Mainstream media is engineered by corporations to succeed with awareness of what consumers will buy into. It’s your responsibility as the consumer to shape the reality of the entertainment industry, and equality on and off-screen.

How to be productive when your country is going through a conflict

First thing first, my name is Verónica i’m 18 years old and since April 19th, everything is different, since me taking my gap year by obligation and my country being in the middle of a revolution, i’m from Nicaragua, you might heard about us in the news, we have been fighting against our corrupted government, we the millenials and the youngest are the majority of this civic revolution, we are in the middle of a genocide, because my people doesn’t have guns and we are being killed, this was a great impact in my life, and the main reason is because i’m the same age as a lot of boys who were killed.

My entire life was changed, i study electronic engineering in a public university in the capital, Managua, i didn’t even complete my midterm tests because i had to run away from the city on April 19th because it was too dangerous, on April 20th the government with the police attacked my city, a few days passed and two weeks later my university  wanted every single student to come back, it was dangerous of course, but i was scared that if i didn’t do my tests i would lose my scholarship, we didn’t finished the week of classes, by the middle of the week they attacked again and so we had to go back to our hometowns, after that day i haven’t go back to my university, it has been almost two months. They tried to do online classes, it didn’t work, a lot of the students don’t have access to internet, and with all the situation sometimes it was difficult to concentrate, to work, even to live.

There was a time that i was totally burnt out, too many sad news, deaths rise, my city was in danger, and all of the stress, anxiety, depression came to my life like a fast ball that you know is coming but you don’t expect to hit you so hard, so my body was physically here but my mind was in Masaya, Managua, Jinotega, all the cities that were attacked and with all the families that were grieving and that was making me sick, mentally sick, i got to a moment where, everything i worked hard for like getting a good GPA, have discipline, getting ahead of assignments, sleeping better didn’t exist anymore, so because of that i got sad, and then i was scrolling trough my timeline and there was this amazing account called @sanar_nic and they have a picture that made a difference in me and make me want to heal myself and work again:

"Take a moment to thank your body for what it has helped you overcome. Thank your body by taking care of it"

And they are right, not only because they are psychologists, but because are words you know but you needed to hear from somebody else to realize how important they are, so then i begined again, and i’m working on it, and i want to share with you this amazing tips that i found out in the adversity, knowing that when you don’t have anything but the strenght to start again, you will, because you can and your body is telling you to do it.  

1. It’s not called being indifferent when you need to take a break from the news, sometimes if you have breakfast, lunch and dinner watching terrible news you are not going to enjoy the blessing it is to have food on your plate, and, you will not enjoy the small moments you have sharing the food with your family, so for the best take a break from the news, sometimes being disconeccted is how you get connected with your reality that is your family and you, of course an hour or two reading the news and being informed is not bad, it’s actually the best so you can get knowledge about the current situation your country is going trough.

2. Be patient, if there is anything you have to learn before starting again is that you need to be patient, a flower to bloom needs to grow slowly by seasons, so don’t worry the more you are patient about your progress the more you advance, take it all easy, step by step, and not only with your growing but with your country situation, not all the conflicts are resolved instantly, they need time.. Of course be aware of the signs of advance in the situation, a little spark of optimism is well needed.

3. Sleep better, i couldn’t sleep for maybe two weeks because the night was when the police attacked, after they stop attacking my city it cost me to have a better sleep routine, so try with taking tea or milk, hot shower, or even hot water cloths in your neck, to relax, add some music if you like, there are a lot of amazing youtube videos or spotify playlists to hear.. But if you can’t sleep at all in the nights, taking breaks in afternoons and even in the mornings will make your body feel grateful and well rested to work.

4. Implement auto-study, try to talk with your professors or even search in the web your career syllabus, the topics of interest and try to download free books that will help you read and learn at every time, having the materials, do a schedule, write in a piece of paper the classes or topics you want to learn and stick to the schedule, it will be hard at the beginning but eventually it will make you feel that even if all the situation is getting worse you can take advantage of it and be a better person for your country’s future, you must believe that studying is the only weapon you have, knowledge will guide you trough the war and will make you a better human, there is no better weapong that an open mind reading a book.

5. Be active, do some exercise, dance, sing, write, draw , take photos, try something different, start making DIYs, talk with your family and friends, express your true self, don’t be scared of doing exercise in the living room while your mother is watching a serie, enjoy the little moments when you are together with your family and loved ones, enjoy your live, which is so precious and valuable that you still have it.

Don’t forget to help the ones that need your help, if you can, if you want, if you have, then do it.

Remind yourself that:

“The best way to honor the deaths, it is from the life, take care of your life and continue their fight”

Computer Literacy 101: Where to Pick Up Tech Basics

With all the real life horror stories of exclusion coming out of traditional “Silicon Valley” companies, it’s more important than ever to embrace inclusivity in tech, down to the most granular level. This means keeping in mind that the idea of ‘tech is for everyone’ includes people who might not be comfortable using computers—yet. 

In the spirit of welcoming computing newcomers aboard the tech train, I spoke with a few professionals about their own humble tech beginnings, and came away with pointers about where to begin when you don’t know the difference between a web browser and a word processor. And—since you probably have some computer know-how if you’ve made it this far—feel free to forward this article to your tech-challenged friends and family who are convinced computers just aren’t for them.

Remember, regardless of your age, background, gender, or location, if you can access a computer and the Internet, you have the ability to break into tech.

Just Log In

There’s something about computers—the jargon, the menus, the seemingly endless commands and options—that make them particularly terrifying if you’re starting from square one. It’s easy for technophobic feelings of self-doubt to stop you from diving in when a monitor is coldly staring back at you. However, according to Maria Hugh, Systems Manager at PPC Protect Limited, a hands-on approach is exactly what you need to lock down computer basics. Today, Hugh works as a systems manager, but before her successful career in tech, she was a self-described technophobe. It took dedicated study and practice, but Hugh says that with a hand-on mentality, she came to learn her way around her desktop—and then some.

“[You just need to] get out there and try things,” Hugh says. “Computers are full of options and buttons, and the best way to learn is…to start clicking.” Marcus Harjani, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer at FameMoose.com, agrees that, among the specific methods and resources available for learning computer skills, immersion needs to be your absolute starting point.

For Marcus, the best place to start that immersion was with fundamental office software like word processors and spreadsheet programs. So go ahead and turn on your computer, let it boot up, and look for the icons associated with these programs on your monitor.

Once you’ve opened a program, start poking around! Try typing a few paragraphs in your word processor, or entering text or numeric values into your spreadsheet program. Don’t worry about advanced techniques—those will come later—just get familiar with having the programs open on your screen, interacting with them, and realizing that one mis-keyed command isn’t going to make your screen explode.

Computer skills are never a case of knowing everything—that’s simply not possible. Instead, computer literacy is an ongoing process where you’ll be learning new specifics and nuances as challenges and needs arise. But you can’t learn anything until your computer is powered on and you’re sitting in front of it, pointing, clicking, and typing.

“To anyone…learning how to use [computers],” Hugh says, “my best advice would be to stick with it. It can seem very daunting at first, but…you’ll soon realize [it’s easier than you think.]”

Turn Your Computer Into Your Research Assistant

While you can totally pick up a few tricks on your own poking around, where do you turn to for solid tips and tutorials on what to do next? Most software programs have built-in Help or FAQ features, you can typically find these in the program’s on-screen menu, but they’re often pretty general, and it’s sometimes hard to find quick answers to specific questions. The good news is that, the very computer that has you stymied is actually a pretty great learning tool itself—you just need to know how to put it to work for you.

In order to unlock your computer’s research potential, you’ll want to learn how to locate and use a web browser. Web browsers are software programs that—if your computer is connected to the Internet through a wireless (WiFi) or wired (ethernet) connection—allow you to interact with online websites. The default browser on a Windows computer will either be Edge or Explorer (depending on your version of Windows) and the default Mac browser is Safari.

Go ahead and locate these the same way you looked for your word processor and spreadsheet programs. Once you have a browser window open, you can use the address bar at the top of the screen to direct your browser to specific websites through an address called a URL (Universal Resource Locator). While—over time—you’ll be using that address bar to visit all kinds of websites for different services and functions, for now we’re going to focus on a site that acts as the heart of answering questions online.

By typing “www.google.com” into your browser’s address bar, you’ll end up on the Google homepage. Google is a search engine (a website used for finding other websites) and by entering a question into the search bar in the center of the screen, you’ll be able to mine the Internet for answers to your tech-related questions (or any questions, really). Simply type “how do you format paragraphs in Word” or “how to you delete cells in Excel” and you’ll instantly be presented with a screen-full of links to answers for your question.

Marwan Mahdy, SEO Specialist at WasilaDev, stands by basic Google searches as the best method for learning computer skills on demand. “When I first started using a computer,” Mahdy says, “I only knew [how to do] two things—how to change the background image and how to type “google.com” into the web browser. [As] I ran into…obstacles, I started solving my problems by typing “how to…” in Google search, reading the first [linked] result and applying [the solution]. Continuous use of Google led me to tutorials, courses, training videos, and many more knowledge sources.”

Inevitably when searching with Google, one of those knowledge sources you’ll encounter is YouTube—a video sharing site that also happens to be a Google subsidiary. Sometimes links to YouTube videos will show up in a Google search, but—particularly if you’re someone who learns best through visual examples like instructional videos versus sifting through text—you can search for videos directly from the YouTube website.

Type “www.youtube.com” into your web browser’s address bar, and you can then use the YouTube search bar to type in questions just like you would with Google—except the results will all be in the form of linked videos. Jon Lynch, Digital Content Editor at Zco Corporation, says that just by opening YouTube and submitting a question, you’re bound to start getting a handle on the computer skill you’re trying to learn—whether it’s software functions, resetting a computer to its factory defaults, or learning how to replace a DVD drive in an aging laptop, Lynch says it’s safe to assume there’s an instructional video on YouTube that covers it.

While searching on the web will eventually net you a limitless supply of knowledge resources and research platforms, the 1-2 combo of Google and YouTube are a rock solid foundation for starting you on the road to computer literacy—and they’re both free to use from the comfort of your desk chair once you’ve learned to point your browser in the right direction!

Hit the Books

Google and YouTube searches will be a standard part of your troubleshooting repertoire for as long as you use computers, but once you start getting comfortable with computer basics, where do you go to dig deeper into a topic? Lynch suggests tracking down discount eBook bundles, particularly when looking for solutions for using commercial software like Word and Excel. eBooks are electronic manuals that you can purchase, download, and read on your computer (or smartphone or tablet) and are often sold at a discount when purchased as a group.

Lynch recommends visiting the website Slashdot for deeply discounted bundles—examples include an Ultimate All-Level Excel Bootcamp bundle on sale for $35 (discounted from its list price of $249) or a Microsoft Office Mastery Bundle (which covers Excel and Word) for $39 (down from its list price of $349). These kind of bundles are a cost-effective way of digging deeper into specific computer and software topics.

In addition to eBooks, you can also look to online courses to boost your computer literacy. Hugh cites two specific websites—Udemy.com and Lynda.com—as excellent resources. Udemy provides courses at individual prices, while Lynda is a paid service with a $20 monthly basic subscription fee and a $30 monthly premium price that includes extra features like the ability to access course material offline. With both sites offering courses in subjects as basic as “how to type faster” to higher-level courses like advanced Excel techniques, these services are a goldmine for upping your ability to use your PC like a pro.

“With [Udemy and Lynda’s] courses…for Word and Excel, you can master both in just a matter of weeks,” Hugh says. “It’s like having someone next to you telling you exactly what to do.”

Phone A Friend

While online courses can simulate the experience of being helped by someone else, Lynch says to consider crowdsourcing as a way of going directly to the source and getting real answers from real people. Crowdsourcing is the practice of using Internet forums to ask questions and receive answers from a “crowd” of readers. Other forum members will vote on the quality of the answers, and the most effective ones will be singled out, connecting you with the information you need in a way that responds directly to the question you’re asking.

Lynch cites Reddit as a particularly helpful forum where this Q&A format—along with the ability to easily bookmark and save answers for future reference—serves as a troubleshooting lifesaver. Sites like Reddit, or CNET (another forum with a dedicated section for computer newbies) typically involve registering for a account using an active email address, after which you can start posting your questions and looking for answers.

And if you’re craving an even more personal and direct response to your computer questions, Jeff Hands, President of Optimum Control, suggests flipping through your mental rolodex and dialing up people in your own life who might be able to help. “My number one piece of advice from my experience is to seek expert sources among your friends and family,” Hands says. Hands recommends keeping your eyes and ears out for additional people with computer skills who might be closer than you think—acquaintances, co-workers, friends of friends—and bending their ear for advice.

“Grow your network and try to meet experts who can help give you tips on your precise tech questions and issues,” Hands says. “Most of the time, they’ll be happy to meet for a casual drink where you can ask your questions—just be sure to cover the bill as a ‘thank you.’”

Once your computer literacy grows from just being able to make your desktop work to delving into the more advanced world of coding and web design, this spirit of networking will continue to serve you well. Then, the longer we took to finish it, the more deadline-oriented it got. Ultimately quality suffered. My learning: Deadlines should be kept simple — show something in private user tests every X weeks. Then focus on scope and quality and do a public beta when it’s ready leading up to product release.

In 2009 I joined Pixar after a rather grueling interview process. I was put in charge of a 16 year old application, written in an obscure programming language. 50 artists hated it but used it as their primary tool to shade all the characters and sets on all the movies in production. No engineers wanted to work on this thing. Welcome to Pixar!

1. Document your journey

Having a reasonable portfolio of work displayed on my website has opened doors for me time and again. My Pixar interviews went terribly. Most of the team didn’t think I had the chops for the job. But the leader of the engineering group — Bill Polson had seen my website. Apparently he was the only one who had. So he called everyone into a room, put the site up on the screen and said “This guy has done more computer graphics than a lot of you in this room combined” — he was exaggerating, but his point was well taken and I got a shot! A few months into the job, a number of folks came by and told me the story of how they had rejected me in interviews but were very glad to be wrong. Phew!

2. Eat your own dog food

Don’t just sit in your own chair. Visit people in departments downstream or upstream from yours and try to do their job. If you become your client you will be able to deploy your vision as if it was the client’s idea all along. At Pixar, I was able to reform the entire shading pipeline across a period of 2 years while 50 artists used it daily without disruption. Like any good method actor I took it too far and eventually gave up my software engineer role to become a shading artist working on characters and sets using the tool I once maintained.

3. Do different things, don’t be afraid to start from zero

I feel the most fulfilled when I’m learning tons of new stuff. Bill Polson once said to me — “If you’re going to work somewhere for 5 years, make sure it’s not the same year repeated 5 times”. I live by that. You don’t need to “be an artist” to make good art or “be a programmer” to develop great software. Put your ego away and try new things. I went from being a tools engineer to a character and sets artist at Pixar. The transitions were tough and not necessarily smart career moves but the personal growth was immense.

I learned so many amazing things at Pixar that I could write a book. Luckily my hero and Pixar president Ed Catmull already did — Read Creativity Inc.

Lumos Labs is based in this historic San Francisco building. I took this picture on one of our daily bubble-tea breaks.

In grad school, I co-founded the Experimental Gameplay Project (EGP). We made 50 game prototypes in one semester and had the best time ever. I was always looking for a job version of the EGP. In 2014, I discovered Lumosity and immediately wanted to work there EGP-style.

1. Separate makers from fakers

This learning is for interviewers and managers trying to hire candidates that are a great fit. Lumos Labs sent me a design document and asked me to build a game using only HTML and JS. I had about 6–8 hours to do it. During in-person interviews I was asked to make lots of modifications to my game. They do similar tests for all the roles they hire for. Build something, then modify and defend it — so much more effective than typical interviews!

2. Challenge your ethos

Lumosity prides itself on the scientific research they put into their games. I can tell you it’s not a marketing gimmick, though the FTC thought so. At Lumos they take the science stuff so seriously that we could barely get any games approved by the Science Team. This was a problem because our customers wanted more games, different kinds of games and were using the product to have fun. Whether games make you smart or not, the truth is people practice because it feels good to work out your brain. And in my opinion, by not providing lots of new stuff regularly, we lost a lot of players to the competition. Sometimes we make the mistake of implicitly following what has worked before and get too close to our ethos to challenge it.

3. The whole can be greater than sum of its parts

To me, Lumosity’s greatest achievement is showing that a subscription based product made entirely out of mini-games can be a huge success. When a number of small projects serve a common theme they can really turn into something very deep and meaningful even if each project itself is relatively shallow. As a fan of quick and small projects, this gives me great hope.

Getting mobbed by kids!

I’ve always been very interested in educational technology. So I spent 2016 working closely with a K-12 school. My team and I deployed iPads for 350 students and 5o teachers, created custom apps and came away with tons of learnings about learning itself!

1. Surround yourself with your audience

At Teal Labs I insisted that our office be inside the school we were working with. So we sat in a room behind the library where we welcomed invasions by kids during recess. I also made it compulsory for my team to take classes or co-teach at least once a week. This helped us make relevant and engaging products and improve upon them in a tight feedback loop.

2. Give students tools to produce content

We invest so much in giving fantastic content to students on a plate. They eat it up voraciously, but it doesn’t translate into skills and knowledge. It just turns kids into content-addicts expecting easy content all the time. On the other hand, if a child is asked to research and teach a topic or create a report on it, the retention of learning is much higher. Teaching is the best learning, as they say. My Teal Labs experience taught me that educational technology should be about engaging tools for students to create, teach, perform and present. Then, as Will Wright would say, “get out of the way and watch them go!”. “Tools to produce content” is also the answer to — What role should VR/AR have in education?

3. Education and Entertainment are the same thing

The best learning experiences are so fun, that you lose track of time. The best entertainment experiences are so transformative that you end up growing and learning something about yourself. Engagement is a key ingredient to both education and entertainment. In the classroom we found that engagement comes from meaningful social interactions with other students- discussions, performances, collaboration and competition. We built an asynchronous multiplayer game for 350 students. The game was about capturing territory in a common world by doing math problems. Each student collaborated with everyone in her class but competed with students from other classes. We saw 40x more participation in math as a result!

I have no idea what I’m doing, but it’s fun

After being lulled by the sweet embrace of gainful employment for 12 years, I finally made the jump into full time independent development. I am making my own games right now because it’s my favorite thing to do and I want my kids to grow up and play 10 awesome things that their papa made.

1. Business is a crazy emotional roller-coaster

Being your own boss is the best! There is nothing more exhilarating than people buying and appreciating a product that is all your own. But there is nothing more depressing than not being able to reach those people. My first game Word Mess has 603,143 downloads (in 5 years) and I have cheered each one of them like I cheered Toy Story 3 winning an Oscar. My recent app Text Mess, on the other hand, has only been downloaded a 100 times in its first 10 days and I feel like jumping off of a bridge :P Hopefully I can learn to trust the process and be cooler about the ups and downs.

2. Clearly define what risk and success mean to you

You can succeed without any major risks if you plan smartly, execute patiently and course correct regularly. It comes down to how you calculate risk and define success. Success for me is financial independence and 100% ownership of my work. To me, risk is when uncertainty can��t be bounded within a small ok-to-fail region of tolerance. In other words, I don’t like risk :) That’s why I’ve patiently saved and learned for 12 years before venturing out on my own. What do risk and success mean to you?

3. Find a good bouncing wall

You are too close to your work. Find a good bullshit detector who will tell you like it is. Ideally, they are also part of (or understand) your target audience. In my case, my wife usually plays this role. She is brutally honest (sometimes too brutal) about the stuff I make. Build a group of early-feedback providers like it’s Pixar’s Brain Trust.

has ocd. tries to let it affect his life as little as possible, but obviously it’s incredibly hard to control a compulsive disorder. was teased for it at school when other kids started to notice. he was obsessed with the number five, would wash his hands five times, count stairs i groups of five, he could only use the corridors in one direction and always had to keep his hands busy. it manifests itself in hyper-fixations (trains when he was a child – specifically steam engines – then later he became obsessed with space and the patterns of constellations, and now he’s obsessed with synthesizers) and repetitive behaviours like counting stairs. doesn’t really affect his social life at all, he can jst get a bit locked-on n hyper-focused sometimes.

has insomnia. barely ever sleeps. finds it hard to switch off from work / writing / gaming / whatever’s preoccupying him in that moment. he’s always awake at 5am and quite often sleeps in through classes but still gets really good grades because he’s very good at his course. rarely attends classes. prefers to work independently. doesn’t really trust his tutors are intelligent enough to be teaching him, and is particularly suspcious of the lockwood tutors. a music snob tbh

hello, it’s nora again.... hitting u with another child. this one is brand spanking new and a longhaired softboi who deserves tenderness. help me mould them into a fleshed out member of the human race with love and tender kisses. here’s the pinterest board 

it might be HIS JUNIOR year but I still think RORY BERGSTRÖM looks exactly like JACK KILMER and sometimes I think the DEMI-BOY is actually them. Of course I’m wrong, as they’re 23 and studying MUSIC TECHNOLOGY while living in BRIGHTON here at Lockwood. The PISCES can be rather ECCENTRIC and METHODICAL, but also kind of HESITANT and DOGMATIC. Their most played song on Spotify was LOSING MY EDGE by LCD SOUNDSYTEM, so I think that says a lot.
