since it's pride month, i want to highlight my favorite underrated/underappreciated queer characters and ships! (part 1/???)

Lake - Infinity Train (non-canon)

it's not canon but you cannot tell me that Lake isn't an allegory for trans/nb people. her arc is so beautiful and her character resonates with me so much!

i have to admit, i actually kinda hated her in the beginning because of how aggressive and rude she was, but she actually gets good character development and you can also understand why she was the way she was, being a good representation of a minority who is constantly suffering because of the social norms she’s forced into. also i don’t ship her with jesse but i do like the idea of them in a qpr or just being platonic besties.

(i use she/her pronouns for Lake because that's what they use in the series, but also because not all non-binary people use they/them, and it's kinda weird to see people insist on using they/them for Lake just because she's nb-coded. she has never shown an aversion to bring referred to with she/her pronouns.)

Le Chevre x El Topo - Carmen Sandiego (canon)

they are side characters who don't play a huge role in the narrative but they are a really cute couple and have been confirmed to be canon! even without the confirmation, it’s clear that they were written to be a romantic couple.

mild spoiler: after the series ends, they stop being antagonists and instead put up a food truck together! it’s the cutest thing, i swear

Ryan x Min-gi - Infinity Train (non-canon)

my OTP through and through! i say non-canon but the romance is so heavily implied, you cannot ignore it.

they're a good example of childhood friends who had a complicated relationship where both individuals did something wrong, but in the end, they grow as people and manage to mend their relationship together.

Moomin x Snufkin - Moominvalley (canon)

i have only read one of the books and watched a few clips of these two characters but from that alone, it's clear that they were written as lovers (and the author is queer too!)

they are a beautiful portrayal of long-distance relationship where both individuals have different needs in life, but still want to be with each other regardless.

Terrestrius / Terry - The Dragon Prince (canon)

Terry is canonically transmasc and they actually manage to explain this in the series, without making it sound too forced or expository. he's such a sweetheart too, and his relationship with Claudia is actually really sweet, despite the fact that she's one of the villains.

Carmen x Julia - Carmen Sandiego (non-canon)

again, i say non-canon but it is heavily implied that they have feelings for each other, especially in the extra interactive episode, where Carmen leaves a bouquet of red roses for Julia, and Julia is shown to blush when receiving them.

Amaya x Janai - The Dragon Prince (canon)

what’s that? it’s actually possible to write an enemies to lovers romance that is healthy and not extremely abusive?

Amaya and Janai have such a good relationship in S5 (and Amaya is also a great disabled representation!) Janai actually learns sign language to communicate with Amaya, and there are no unnecessary miscommunication plots or drama, they’re just a really loving wlw couple.

Benson x Troy - Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (canon)

when i say we need more mlm ships in animated media!! i’m so glad us sapphics are getting a lot of representation but it’s time cartoons started including more queer men.

benson and troy are just a really sweet couple with a good relationship that doesn’t have a ton of pining or unnecessary angst. while i love complex and tragic queer relationships, i also think that it’s good to show teenagers just being teenagers sometimes.

this opinion seems to be scarce in the queer community, which really annoys me tbh.

Raine x Eda - The Owl House (canon)

i cannot believe that given the popularity of TOH, Raeda is still such an overlooked ship. this might be an unpopular opinion but Raeda is better written and has more chemistry than Lumity and Huntlow.

just within the span of Raine's introductory episode, they managed to establish a clearly romantic past between these two characters, and also an interesting dynamic. and even though they didn't have much screentime, they still turned out to be the best ship in the series. (again, just my opinion, don't come at me)

i think it's so important to show older queer people in media, just as it is important to show younger queer characters. it helps establish the fact that queerness has always existed and isn't some newfound trend that social media invented. not to mention, raeda is one of the very few canon ships that include a non-binary character.

I did the One Piece shipping showcase! Additional explanations and thoughts below:

First ship - Zoro/Luffy (OPLA) I started shipping about three episodes into the live action and it just grew and grew. Their dynamic in OPLA was great and still really special to me! Ship I didn't like at first - Sanji/Nami I'm still often surprised by how cute I find them at times, though I'm not sure I would say I officially "ship" them. Still the only thing I could really think of to put here. Ship I don't like anymore - Luffy/Koby Cute Koby/Lu fan art was one of the things that made me want to try OPLA to begin with but the "ship" didn't last long for me as it was quickly replaced by Zoro/Luffy. I still think Koby and Luffy are cute together, though. Popular ship I don't like - Zoro/Sanji I've just never been into this dynamic. Have seen some great fan art though. Favorite rarepair - Vivi/Nami I think NamiVivi counts as a rarepair? They're super cute!! Ship I don't like - Luffy/Nami Just like with ZS, they aren't for me. Ship I want to be canon the most - Sanji/Pudding Technically I don't want any ships to be canon, or if I did I would say a slash ship like ZoLu, but I wanted to put one that actually stands a chance, and this was all I could come up with. I did think their story in WCI was surprisingly sweet, but they both need to do a bit more growing before they can be good together.

Favorite crackship - Sanji/Luffy If this even counts as one? Tbh I really am not a crackship person, I don't ship any characters who haven't at least met and shared something a little special. Current OTP - Zoro/Luffy You know it's ZoLu baby!!!!

Either way, they care about their little darling meal. Something akin to love and hunger all at once as they coo and poke their stomach, listening to all those sweet gurgles inside, mixed with the most adorable squeals…

And the prey will be fiiiiine. It’s not like the pred intends to harm them. After all, why would they want to damage their most precious prey? If it’s digestion, then they’ll exist as somewhat sentient pudge on the pred’s middle, being gently caressed and stroked and kissed. If it’s endo, then the pred gets so many more opportunities to toy around with them. A cherished little plaything <3

Ok I legitimately made myself curious with my own post of Roman writing analogical fanfiction, so this is what we’re doing: if the sides were aware of the ships of themselves, what would they ship? (Ft too much analysis from yours truly)

Logan: I like imagining that every side in the moralogince trio ships the other duo that’s not them, so that would mean Logan would ship royality (which makes sense, he’d probably think “what dorks, they would be a nice couple”). I also think he is the only side who would ship Moceit just because he can see the progression and he thinks it’s sweet. I also see him shipping Dukexiety for literally no reason other than “spooky.” He also has this weird thing: “I don’t want to date Janus, but I would ship loceit”

Roman: Oh you know analogical is his otp. He shipped logicality (to go along with the moralogince thing) until Accepting Anxiety, and then he claimed his title as the number one analogical shipper. I can’t really see him shipping anything else, maybe dukeceit since they’re both “villains” in Roman’s eyes

Patton: Logince, he wants them to be married. Patton just… ships everyone with himself. I can kind of see him shipping loceit since both of them are more serious and smart, I also see him casually shipping analogical but nowhere near as much as Roman does. Basically uh, Patton likes Logan ships.

Virgil: I will never forget the livestream where Virgil wrote a Dukeceit fanfic. Virgil ships Dukeceit—it’s the only Janus ship he will ever tolerate. He also might ship Intrulogical just because Remus and Logan can kinda have mad scientist vibes but Virgil’s not really big on shipping Janus or Remus with anyone really, besides each other. (Also I think he ships logince but I have no reasoning to back this one up)

Janus: Hot take, Janus would die for royality. He loves royality as much as Roman loves analogical. He chills in his room, everyone thinks he’s plotting something evil, no. He stole Roman and Patton plushies and he’s making them kiss. He also kinda likes prinxiety because he thinks it’s fun how much they hate him, but his main ship is royality, he loves the cute besties to lovers thing and he will never ever admit it

Also, I'm hearing now that it was actually a crush he was having on her, which I hate. Like, yes, he's an adult in that specific comic, but I'm tired of DC making him fall for almost every female and older woman that he interacts with, like just let him be normal about them already!!! For writers to stop treating him like he's nothing but evil, because he's not!! He's just a kid who grew up with a kind of life that's VERY different from everyone else's and was just taught ever since from a really young age to see things in other ways because of that. He does have a heart, it's the reason why he's made so much effort to become the person and hero he is today now and has left the whole League life behind. And about him being a tough person, that's just literally his dang personality, it's not something that adds to him being "evil" at all either

For DC to also just let him choose and make his own path as a hero when he grows up. He shouldn't become the next Batman by force or go through with becoming head of the Loa either, one of the big parts about his character is about discovering who HE actually is and figuring out what he really wants for himself instead, so he deserves to make his own choices by his own will. He should also become a vetinarian when it comes to getting a career

Stop with the white washing and start consistently representing his Arab side more, just like how the artist Gleb Melnikov did very boldly and also wonderfully in Robin 2021 when drawing him

And another one for the writers is to also stop making him crush on older woman!!!! PLEASE!! Just cut it out already!!! This entire thing has been going on ever since he was just 10 years old and nothing about it has ever been "cute!" or whatever they think of it as! It's just freaking weird and I don't understand why DC writers keep doing that to him! He's just a kid, not a grown man, so treat him like it!!! And stop deaging woman who were also already much older just to be with him and stop setting him up with his own female family members too! That one's already happened twice now (Mar'i and Cassandra) and now I'm scared that the writers of the second Supersons movie are gonna push that into there too with Cassandra AGAIN and ruin the film that way, which I really HOPE that doesn't happen AT ALL!😖

Let him have an actual relationship with his Mother instead of keeping them distant so much! Damian deserves to have her in his life too, not just Bruce as his Father, and she also deserves to have him in hers as well. Despite how things may be, they really love eachother a lot and it's not fair that they don't get to be as close as they were before, which is also really heartbreaking to think about honestly

Damian should also get to have a relationship with Respawn too that can develop into a sibling one at some point if ever he ever does appear again in the future

Never let him act like a normal person, let him forever be his weird, strange self, because that's literally one of the biggest things that MAKES HIM DAMIAN and I love him for it lol. Batman and Robin 2023 tried to change this about him in it's protayal and I hated it, it felt like some imposter, which just frustrated me a lot and made some things boring too. This goes for other kinds of mischaracterizations that were done to him too, like Gotham War as the most recent example, which was a big time failure at doing it well in a different way. Writers need to learn how to get to know him better first before actually writing him in their stories, deciding how he will react and treat things that happen in said story and it's plot. Here's something else much better too, he needs to start getting writers who actually like/love, respect, and actually understand him!

Steph for the ask game?

three facts about them from my personal headcanons

-The first woman Steph was ever attracted to was Zatanna. She didn't realise this until later on when she was dating Cass and it clicked that it hadn't just been platonic girl crush appreciation

-She did actually die. The body they put in the ground was actually Steph. Due to reality warping from various villains she ended up in Africa with Leslie who admitted that she hadn't actually let Steph die but tried everything and saw her bleed out regardless. They were both highly confused how she was alive again and they never did fully confirm why.

-She has all the autopsy scars and long lasting damage from Black Mask's torture. She used to play the piano but when she came back her fingers didn't stretch the way they used to and the first time she tried it gave her a panic attack.

a reason they suck

They were created and written by Chuck Dixon, which often meant being a part of his shitty conservative propaganda. She was more of a victim than a perpetrator most of the time, but I'd love to have modern Steph reflect on that and be like "Damn that internalized misogyny was kicking my ass sometimes huh."

a reason they are great

What if the entire narrative was stacked against you, what if your writers and editors looked down on you for being a teenage girl and treated you as nothing more than a pawn in their shitty sexist manpain stories. And what if you survived and triumphed and became loved enough to carve your own narrative. What if people have come and gone from the "family" that once excluded you maliciously but you're still here and kicking, a core part of it now. They put you in the Robin uniform as a consolation prize before killing you but you're still here and you're clawing your part in that history with everything you've got. For everyone that'll say Damian is the fourth Robin there's someone who'll reply "Actually that was Stephanie Brown."

a reason I relate to them

Being an isolated teenage girl who feels a deep anger at the injustice of the world and doesn't quite have anywhere to fit in or fully vent that anger? I was literally two bad days away from going out on the street to fight crime when I was a teen. I tend to relate to Cass more because the specific mentality and issues she have resonate strongly, but Steph also has plenty of material for me to dig into.

(what I consider to be) the top tier otp/ot3 for that character

Stephcass. It's gotta be stephcass. I could give a million reasons but I've yelled about this so much on my blog already. They bounce off each other so well, they've got the backstory and angst and complex dynamic while also being funny and cute together. The accidental romantic narrative they created is so damn good it barely needs anything to canonize it at this point.

five things that never happened to that character that I believe should have happened

A proper go at being Robin. An apology from Bruce. A discussion with Tim about what they did wrong and an apology too. A long talk with Cass after she came back from the dead with (you guessed it) an apology from Cass. Getting to talk to preboot Jason about what it means to be a sacrificial lamb to give Batman manpain and hype Tim up as the perfect Robin.

five people that character never fell in love with and why

-Dean. Even if she hadn't gotten pregnant it would have never worked out. He was simply too old and for all Steph hates herself she would have realized it eventually

-Detective Gage, for exactly the same reasons as Dean.

-Jason. He died before she came along and by the time he came back it would never cross either of their minds to be anything but purely platonic. They can bond but neither of them appeal to the other romantically.

-Kyle Mizoguchi. He's sweet and they could be something but unfortunately she's in love with Cass at this point. Like the entirety of Batgirls is just Steph and Cass being in love and not realizing it. Kyle had the wrong timing.

-Dick Grayson. The hypothetical age difference isn't a problem for Steph. But obviously, it's an issue for Dick. If she were ever to fall in love with him in an alternate universe and confess he'd be highly alarmed to find out why she thought things were possible between them. It might actually be nice for Steph to get an understanding ear and a shoulder to cry on, someone to tell her that it's not her fault and those men were wrong, but that's all. For one thing Dick is not a scumbag who creeps on young girls and for another thing that's his little brother's ex. In no universe could this ever be more than a one sided crush.

"So is that a no?" Jake asked, trying to emulate a puppy dog with his green eyes. If their relationship was still fresh, it would have worked.

"You're really asking that in regards to our baby having a cowboy themed nursery?" Venus deadpanned.

"It's cute! They can have little cowboy boots and a stuffed horse, as well as some-"

"We are not getting them Longhorn themed stuff Jake. I was lenient with the dog, but I draw the line at indoctrinating our children," she placed her hands on her stomach. While she was far from showing, it was already an instinct.

"I want it to be known that I did not indulge that much when it came to getting Okra Longhorn themed things. They have one jersey and one toy," Jake said, putting his hands up in defense.

"And what, you think that deserves a reward or something?" Venus rolled her eyes as she paused the Bachelor episode she and Jake had been watching.

"I think we should at least get baby Seresin a matching jersey. Think of how cute the pictures would be. We could also get them a horsie blanket, a brown cow ottoman-"

"Did you say brown cow ottoman? Wait, have you been looking at stuff already?"

Jake moved so he was sitting next to her on the couch. Grabbing his hand with one hand and placing the other on her stomach.

"I'm not an amateur V, I have a Pinterest board," Jake said with the complete sincerity that she both loved and was confused by.

"I'm only six weeks along, why the rush?" She asked, resting her head on Jake's shoulder. The smell of Cedarwood calmed her, reminding her that he was here. She snaked an arm around his shoulders, her fingers quickly finding his scalp to massage.

Jake sighed, fighting back the urge to roll it off. She would know and he knew better. Plus she would stop her world famous massages.

Always a step ahead, she quickly added, "And don't tell me it's nothing because I have that pregnancy intuition now."

Jake's brows knitted together, "Pregnancy intuition?"

"Yeah, I'm like ninety percent sure it's a thing."

Jake rolled his eyes, though a small smile remained on his face, "Is that what you're going to say when you want to be right?"

She leaned in, a devious smirk on her face, "Are you going to tell me I'm wrong?"

The comment got a smile out of Jake, the tension visibly leaving his shoulders as he laughed. A domino effect, as it got a laugh out of Venus as well, her smirk melting away into a sweet smile.

Jake shifted, laying his head on his shoulder and wrapping an arm around her waist.

It brought a smile to Jake's face, though it didn't completely put his mind at ease. This would be his first true test as a Top Gun instructor and it couldn't have come at a worse time.

"Besides, if Cyclone keeps you from me, I'll call him personally," Venus explained as she reached for the remote, resuming the rose ceremony.

"How....how do you have his number?" Jake asked, thoughts of missing baby time being replaced by the potential of his wife committing some kind of felony.

Gym Shenanigans

Friendly competition between the four of them that's really just the boys taunting and challenging one another and being motivating in all their dumbness.

And Kory is so fond as she smokes all of them. Scorched earth policy, sorry boys. ;)

But it's all good because the three of them are so (˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) because wowie hot damn, look at their girlfriend go.

Something something they all benchpress each other and Jason loses it each time when all of them do him. Which omg what? Hot? Help?

Dick being the first though and it takes so much coaxing and Dick swears he's got this. Which he does. It's only a few reps, anyhow. Still, the moment Dick presses Jason up, Jason panics and flails and ends up throwing himself out of Dick's hold and landing on his chest and Dick wheezes because oh god. Meanwhile Kory and Roy are !!! because whoops, spotting is a thing and Jason is mortified forever because again, omg.

But Dick just laughs through his wheezing and holds Jason to him before he can run off and Jason is sweet and blushy as he hides in Dick's chest and it's cute.

Speaking of chests - Roy marveling Jason's pecs. Like how you can catch glimpses of it through the low cut of Jason's sleeves. Dick following suit once he notices Roy's staring. And Kory following along not long after and wow, she thinks she understands the infatuation with breasts now. Amazing.

But wait. Dick getting stared at and objectified by other gym goers because he's beautiful handsome gorgeous. And while it's uncomfortable, he deals. Nothing new, right?

Only Jason puffs up and is ready to throw down, just sending the nastiest glares and snarls at men and women alike. He's got Kory right there backing him up too while Roy uses his impressive back to act as a screen and the combination of it all lightens Dick's mood so much and he loves them all dearly. ;U;

Sauna. Where Kory basks in the heat and unintentionally raises the temp until her boys are toasted and she has to drag them out and fan them back to safe temps.

Shower. Where Kory suggests showering together and yeah, sure. Only Jason bails out of embarrassment, maiden at heart that he is.
