How do you think feral’s brozone (and co) would react to finding out about the support group?
Ooooooh this is an interesting one.
I also still need to do designs for Feral's brothers but not much changes just a few small things.
I'm going to take this in the direction of something me and a few other JD's group creators talked about before. It's basically a Brozone day where all the JD support group JD's and their brothers all meet up.
This also makes things easier because Feral can't tell his brothers about the group. For obvious reasons.
I guess it really depends on the timeframe. If were talking right after the third movie then they would all be pretty sad. They don't know where their JD is (except for Floyd but oof) and now here they are watching all these different JD's hanging out with their younger brothers. At least for the ones on good terms with each other.
They would definitely get approach by Eldest at one point or another. That man is wholesome and sweet to not check in on the group of brothers tucked in the corner with no JD insight or even near them.
Que sad convo where they explain they don't know where their JD is and that he's most likely dead. Eldest feels incredible bad and would defiantly make them hangout with his brothers for the rest of the event.
For Feral the event would be so over whelming he would tuck into a corner after running through the crowd trying to see if him brother might be here but would quickly start to panic and then run off. Hitman would probably find him hiding under a table cloth. Hitman would defiantly get some chips from grey and give Feral some snacks. Checking in on him periodically during the event.
Now if where talking a few moths after the third movie things would be a lot different. Feral would be so excited for him brothers to meet his fellow JD's. Upon entering the event he would pin point his favorite JD's very quick. Dragging all his brothers over to Eldest and Hitman. I can Feral grabbing the arms of which ever two brothers are closest to him and pulling them up into the air and shaking them around like a kid going "LOOK! LOOK! I FOUND THEM! WE FOUND EACH OTHER!"
I don't know if Eldest and Feral's brothers would recognize each other but i can see Eldest crying at the wholesome dynamic between them all. Feral's brothers all giving him head scratches like the animal his is. Feral trotting around with Floyd on his back as he gives then a tour of the house. Bruce and Feral starting a wrestling match in the living room. Snake would definingly be cheering on the sidelines or even join it dragging his brothers into the mix. So it just turns into one big play fight. Feral's Clay and Branch simple off to the side shaking their heads.
I can see Feral's Branch getting along with Grey easily and Grey giving Feral's Branch the info on the chip bag tactic. Branch may or may start keeping chips bags in his vest at all time incase a certain purple and green haired troll ever appears. Grey and Branch fist bump.
Also i see Feral grabbing Hitman abruptly when his mid conversation with some and picking him up only to place him down it front of his brothers and Hitman being the awkward man his is just stands stands well Feral starts wildly gesturing around. His brothers don't really know what his saying but clearly Feral really like this JD so after they get past the initial awkwardness they start talking. Also they all lose their minds over tiny Ronda. Clay most of all to where he starts going the shaking hands thing.
So yeah his brothers would be thrilled to know that even though their technically other versions of himself that Feral has a few nice and awesome people in his life.
It also explains where that chewed up prosthetic arm came from that they found in the bunker. Among a few other items.
So yeah they are very happy for Feral and it was nice for them to hear JD's voice again even if it's not their JD's.
Also they loose their minds over some of the stories Eldest and Grey tell them about Feral. Most notable is the chip bag and arm incidents.
They get mentioned so "Hey guys bet your weren't expecting this. L."
Eldest JD belongs to @matmiraculous
Hitman JD belongs to @lemony-and-zesty
Snake JD belongs to @gingisauce
Grey JD belongs to @ijjstlostthegame

Demonic Possessions Ch 9: Love Advice & Interior Design
Note: Here’s the Master List for the full story. I recommend reading my stuff on my actual Blog if you enjoy OM! official music! Thank you so much for the support. Please let me hear from you in the comment section. I wanna talk OM!
I decided to make this chapter with more light banter and fun interactions and give the nephilim brothers some attention.
Warnings: Swearing, NSFW implied, light stuff this time ********************************
A couple weeks had passed. Construction on the attic was nearly complete. Lucifer and Azriel had negotiated a schedule in which the nephilim brothers would work on the attic bedroom for their sister. This helped avoid chaotic mornings, at least where the nephilim were concerned.
The overall mood of The House of Lamentation had shifted from the unease of having a new occupant amongst the Brothers and Lilly, to an odd sense of which the brothers had never experienced before. A shift in their dynamic as a family twisted due to a certain blossoming relationship.
Leviathan had become more outgoing and less reluctant in participating in events. He was more welcoming of everyone hanging around his room as well and his mood was less-likely to sour thanks to Lena. His brothers were happy for him, but it was an unusual experience for them as well. It was hard to ever find the two of them apart from each other.
“Thank you for doing my nails Asmo!” Lena chimed, “Your skills are amazing!”
Asmo grinned with brimming confidence, “Of course they are Leee-na. I’m an absolute master with nail art.”
“He’s also the best hair stylist.” Lilly chimed.
Asmodeus’s room had transformed into a spa for the two female residents and himself. The human was laying on his bed with a face mask and cucumbers over her eyes as her toe nails dried. Her hair was in a towel and she was completely relaxed as she sipped on her mimosa.
The nephilim had a peel on her face as she sat in a lavish chair while the demon painted a cute black cat on her accent nail. She too had her fill of mimosas as they relaxed from a week of cramming for a chapter test in alchemy. The math involved was exhausting, but she’d probably do well enough.
“Your brother is almost as bad as my old man when it comes to studying. I’m doing my best to be civil about it, but it’s getting on my nerves…”
Asmo gave a dramatic sigh, “If you think he’s bad now, wait until midterms. It’s a boot camp nightmare.” He then exchanged looks with Lilly as she peeked at them from her cucumber. He was underselling Lucifer’s regime.
“You know….” Asmo began with a sly voice, “I’m surprised Levi isn’t in here to get his nails painted…” Lena knew he was just baiting her at the mention of his brother. He wanted to open a dialogue to gossip about their relationship.
Shrugging, “I offered an invitation but Levi’s nails are still great from the last time you painted them. He’s also really engaged in a super hard game. The last time I saw him, Beel and Belphie were watching him battle a boss. It was getting intense in there…” It was also extremely cute, she thought.
“I’m just saying, given the fact that he’s the Avatar of Envy, I figured Levi to be a little more possessive and be following you around a lot more.” his younger brother admitted.
“Not gonna lie…” Lilly added, “I kinda anticipated that myself.” The brothers were all very possessive and it was easy to picture any one of them being like that. Well, Lucifer excluded. He was too damn cocky to believe anyone would stray from him ever.
Lena thought about it for a moment, ‘Well, I took your collective advice and talked directly with him when we went on that first date. I laid it all out for him: I’m not being held down to any single relationship. And in a kinder manner, that I basically don’t want to deal with jealousy. I’ve given up on monogamy….” he chuckled for a moment, “He actually compared me to you Asmo, and then asked if I wanted to start a reverse harem...and ya know what, I kinda like that idea haha!”
The other two blinked for a moment and joined in the laughter. “Pffft, that’s definitely a Levi-type of conclusion…” Lilly chuckled. She peeled the cucumbers off and ate them as she sat up. “It looks like you guys reached an amicable agreement then?”
The nephilim looked upward, clearly thinking about it for a moment. “We have. He agreed to an open relationship and to not be overly clingy with me. It’s beneficial to the both of u-”
“BOTH!?” Asmodeus interrupted, “Please explain!!?! Has my big, nerdy brother been hiding some secret affairs over these past few centuries?!” Why would it benefit the both of them, when only one of them has even been in multiple relationships?
“Oh, it’s quite simple really,” Lena chuckled, “His 2D waifus. I won’t ever complain about them or come between him and his fandom and I can have relationships with others as well. Besides, we’re immortal beings...forever is a realistic timeframe for us...why cling to each until we both become miserable? Monogamy hasn’t ever worked for any immortals I know...what about you?” Of course she was asking Asmo as he finished her last nail.
The demon shook his head as he released her hand and got his DDD ready to take pictures of his work for the gram. “Not that I’ve ever paid attention to it, I really can’t think of anyone...even angels drift apart and take loooooong breaks.”
“Well that’s a bit depressing….” Lilly mumbled.
“Oh, Lilly dear...don’t get depressed about it. It’s the beauty of humanity. You guys are far more capable of having a one, true love...not that you have to stick to it. It’s a valid option though.” She didn’t mean to depress the human. In her very long life, Lena had been in 100+ year relationships with various long-lived beings and it never seemed to work out. She was now trying this open relationship thing so that she didn’t feel tied-down or tired. She didn’t want anyone she was with to feel that way either.
“It’s all good. I was teasing for the most part.” Lilly smiled, “There’s only so many ways a person can spice things up and keep their relationship fresh; I’m sure an immortal couple could really struggle after a few centuries. It’s that case in my favorite vampire novel series anyways…”
Asmo didn’t comment on the matter. He couldn’t relate since he was loved by all and could charm anyone he wanted. He never for a moment considered a relationship because he could never love anyone more than himself.
“So, since you’ve found a way for things to work, have you guys……?” He smirked at the nephilim.
“ASMO!” Lily shouted. He merely chuckled.
“It’s none of your business…” Lena responded.
“That would be a solid ‘No’ then.” He quibbed. Lilly exchanged a look with him and nodded.
“Y’all are both horrible! It’s hard given he’s so reclusive and nervous. But also very cute….NO! I’m not talking with you guys about this, especially you Asmo. I’m not giving you any ammo to blackmail Levi…” She paused for a moment and contemplated, “I know he’s shy. But I also….”
“Also what?” Lilly blinked.
“I don’t know how to approach him. I’ve never been with a demon. Are you guys...very different for other beings?”
“Oh, you wanna see? Hmmmm?” Asmo teased. Or was he?
“Stop it!” Lilly smacked his shoulder lightly.
“Lena. You’re gonna have to make the first moves on Levi. Good news is there won’t be much effort you’d have to put into seducing him. It’s just finding the opportune moment when you’re feeling it.”
The girls both stared at Asmodeus for a moment.
“What? Is there something on my gorgeous face?” He immediately felt his pale, rosey cheeks.
“No, you’re just being surprisingly perceptive and giving profound advice on the matter.” Lilly said, “Lena should definitely wait until she feels right before taking the move. Like you said girl, you’ve got eternity. Take your time. Levi is a great guy and I know he’d never pressure you...”
Lena smiled and looked-up while thinking about him. “Yeah, he’s great. Special. I have so much fun with him. It’s nice to have someone interested in the same nerdy stuff as I am and not being picked-on about it 24/7.” Her last relationship went down like that. “When he blushes simply by me taking his hand, or how shocked he gets when I sneak behind him and wrap my arms around his waist...oooh... He’s too cute!!!!”
The nephilim squealed and shut her eyes hard thinking about her Levi-kun and the other two just laughed at her. Her responses to his cuteness just didn’t match her aesthetic at all and they found it hilarious to watch.
"Oh.." Lilly chimed in again, "They're 'normal' I guess."
Lena and Asmo blinked at the human for a moment.
"You asked if they were, ya know, compatible. I've had the horror of accidentally entering the men's bath when we went on a trip to a demonic hotspring before...I wanted to shove hot pokers in my eyes..." Lilly cringed.
"Oh, that's right! Lilly got to see me in all of my glory...jealous?" Asmo grinned.
The trio laughed and picked on each other all afternoon.
****************************
“Okay, we need a few more pieces of paneling. I want some nice filigree border work.” Azriel said to himself out loud as he took a step back to look at the progress made on his sister’s room.
Zak stood in the doorway, hands in his pockets, as he watched his brother pace across the room. “Hey bro. It’s looking good. You really outdid yourself this time.” His siblings were super artsy, creative types. He couldn’t keep up with them on that. Instead, the middle sibling put any creativity into vehicle design and engineering. “Let’s take a break and go to Hell’s Kitchen for lunch. Then when we get back, you can spot anything else we need to do….”
“You do have a point. Let’s eat and come back with a new perspective…”
**************************
The nephilim brothers went for lunch, meeting up with Beelzabub and Belphegor. The twins were in the back corner, where the owner often put them so they weren’t a distraction for the other customers.
Belphegor had his arms folded on the table, propping his head up as he watched Beel chow down on ten burgers.
“Hey guys, can we join you?” Zak asked when he approached the demons.
“Sh--rr” Beel nodded as he wadded another large bite of food. Zak could have sworn the demon’s jaw had unhinged to take such a huge bite.
Azriel took a seat next to Beel. The two of them were the same height, though Azriel was much thinner, with more of a swimmer’s body then a body-builder’s. Zak sat by a groggy Belphie. They too, were the same height but different build. Zak liked to work out when he wasn’t working on a new engine.
“You guys about to finish remodeling?” Belphie asked with a yawn at the end, “I’m curious what you’ve done to my old...space.” Was it a bedroom or a prison? He didn’t know quite how to label the attic Lucifer kept him in.
Azri gave a pleasant smile, “Yes. It’s all coming along smoothly. Lena will be thrilled with it. It’s a touch of old european with her beloved gothic asethetic. She might not like the light-colored flooring, but it makes the space look bigger…” he went off into deep thought for a moment. Then, he saw some green in the corner of his eye and smiled, “excuse me for a moment…”
“Sorry, I swear Azri has ADHD or something...don’t mind him. ‘Creative Genius’ at work 24/7” Zak chuckled and looked at the menu.
“S’okay.” Belphie nodded and closed his eyes for a moment. “Sounds like you’ve had a lot of things to do. It’s nice putting in that effort for your little sibling.”
The twins and Zaksalamel chatted and ate their lunch, nearly forgetting that the elder nephilim had even came to Hell’s Kitchen. When he finally returned, there was an empty plate left at his spot.
“You shouldn’t have ordered and left when sitting by Beel…” Belphegor responded after seeing the shocked expression on Azri’s face. “Your food didn’t stand a chance...and apparently the napkin…”
“S-sorry….” Beel scratched the back of his head.
After a moment of silence, Azriel sighed, “it’s okay. That one was definitely on me….”
Zak noticed his brother’s cheeks get a little rosy. His mind was elsewhere clearly. What was he up to. “Hey, Devildom to Azriel...where’d you disappear to?”
“Oh, forgive my rudeness..again.” He suddenly returned to the conversation. “I just happened to see someone I know and asked for their opinion about the flooring choice…”
“Mmmh-hmmm…” Zak’s eyes narrowed at his brother, knowing there was something else to it. Azriel’s voice tone was suspicious. He’d leave it alone for now.
“So, anyways, I made the right decision, and I think we will be finished with everything in 2 days.” Azri clapped his hands together, chipper with the apparent results of the consultation he’d just had. “Beel, if you’d like to make it up to me for eating my highly-anticipated lunch, could you help carry furniture upstairs? You must be very careful…Lena is going to flip out when she sees it!”
As the four of them returned to the House of Lamentation together, Beel and Belphie walked some space behind the nephilim.
“They sure seem to care a lot about their sister to spend so much time on this room. I don’t think it was that bad..” Belphegor said quietly.
‘True. But, we’d do the same thing for our sister too. And that means Lilly as well…” Beelzebub nodded.
Agreeing, Belphegor let out a small sigh. He wasn’t sure about his own opinion of Lena so far. They didn’t start off on the best of terms. No, he’d admit that he behaved like a brat that day. But he never had the opportunity to get to know her or to apologize for his overreaction. Maybe he’d help with the furniture too?

CARNIVAL recaps [1/13] These will be full recaps of Carnival, the JDC book between Carnival Eve (recapped here) and Carnival Day (will be recapped as soon as this one is done). It's necessary to know the events of Cosmic, Joker and Carnival Eve before tackling this one. (The Saimon Family Case isn't ultra necessary, but it certainly helps.)
Carnival on its own has 26 episodes, each one spanning a week. They’re told completely out of chronological order. A note at the beginning encourages the reader to either experience them in this weird sequence (“the reader method”), or use the list provided to read them in chronological order (“the writer method”). The recap follows the reader’s way.
This and the next book are intentionally written to be VERY confusing and will constantly jump between places, times and characters. There are dates at the beginning of chapters, but they won't necessary mean a chapter happens exactly in that timeframe. There are tons and tons of characters. GOOD LUCK.
As for content warnings, there will be suicide, a lot of death and grieving in general, mental illness, a global virus pandemic, poorly handled Nazis, and also the author can’t write gay people.
Today’s recap: Christmas on Easter, S-detectives galore, broken gaydars, and the author letting you know early that he won’t hesitate to kill major characters.

[PART 1 — CARNIVAL ACT]
--
ONE
23 Nov 1996 — 29 Nov 1996
EASTER ISLAND
--
Now that it's been over three months since the Crime Olympics began on August 10th, the estimated death toll has reached over four hundred million.
Each Saturday a great tragic incident happens somewhere in the world at exactly 1 PM local time. A mysterious terrorist organization RISE announced that it’s the doing of the Billion Killer, an omnipotent being with no tangible form.
While the Billion Killer is fearsome, most of the deaths happen due to other causes. RISE’s “Invisible Soldiers” (IS for short) are stealthily killing people, and the global crime rate is on the rise. Some call it an Invisible War. There’s also a new disease called Alive [or Arrive? can be either word] spreading around and killing people in droves with its extremely low survival chance.
--
Christmas Mizuno has recently been staying on Easter Island. While there, he makes friends with a blind girl called Joyeeta, the daughter of the owner of the inn that Christmas is staying at.
Before he came here, Christmas had assisted Ryuuguu Jounosuke in investigating one of the Billion Killer’s cases in Peru. While they were there, Ryuuguu suddenly collapsed in fever brought on by the Alive disease, but had the extreme luck to recover after a short period of coma. But after he woke up, he seemed… different, and in an unusually brash way told Christmas to basically fuck off and try to find any clues on the Easter Island.
Christmas was confused by the sudden change in Ryuuguu, but at least glad about him surviving. So much has already been lost in the Crime Olympics. The JDC building’s explosion in August killed close to 300 out of 350 members of the organization. Christmas’s beloved Kasumi Fuyuka was dead, and they couldn’t even find Ajiro Souji’s body in the rubble.
--
When Christmas and Joyeeta are riding around the island, she suddenly says in her poor English that “a giant bird is falling”, and immediately afterwards they hear a rumbling sound and feel vibrations like that of an earthquake. Christmas assumes a plane has crashed and they speed up towards the beach.
It turns out the Moai statues have suddenly fallen over and killed a lot of tourists. Between the bodies lies the sixteenth skull of the Billion Killer; these are strangely glistening skulls made out of yet unidentified material, that so far are suspected to be symbolic “medals” of the Crime Olympics, one skull being left on each crime scene of the Billion Killer.
One of the dead tourists managed to draw a dying message in the sand: a simple image of a flying bird (?) and the letters NAS next to it.
When they return to town, they discover Joyeeta’s father had died around the same time the statues fell, stabbed with a yet unknown weapon in a pool full of other people. Christmas thinks a lot about how the impact of this one death is lost next to the more flashy Billion Killer case.
Joyeeta believes that “the bird” may have been brought here by her dead older sister Tierra as revenge, and that it killed their father. Tierra had been once attacked by a guest, pushed him in self-defense and accidentally killed him, which made the enraged father beat her and kick her out. Tierra was found dead on the beach later.
Despite being fed this entire sob story, Christmas already suspects that it was Joyeeta who killed her father, but leaves that be.
He can't guess the trick behind the Moai case. What did the bird and NAS mean? The Nazca bird drawing? Or maybe a NASA space shuttle crashed near the island? Unable to figure out much, Christmas eventually goes back to Peru to reunite with Ryuuguu and investigate the Nazca lines just in case.
After he leaves, we the readers learn that the blind girl named Joyeeta was the one who had died, and Tierra was just pretending to be her. After Joyeeta’s death, Tierra had found a dagger on the beach and prayed to the Moai asking for her father to die somehow. When she checked the beach later, the dagger wasn’t there—and now it seems like the Moai heard her wish.
--
Thinking again on how Joyeeta's father could have been killed, Christmas reasons out that he was stabbed when everyone’s attention was focused on the rumbling and noise. It’s like that saying about “the magician's left hand”—an illusionist distracts the audience with his right hand while really performing the trick with his left.
If something had enough force to topple the Moai statues, maybe it would also be able to fling a knife into the victim somehow. Or maybe Christmas is just rambling again, but hey, wandering around in confusion until he bumps into a solution is his reasoning method after all.
--
TWO
30 Nov 1996 — 06 Dec 1996
NAZCA LINES
--
When Christmas arrives in Peru a week after the Moai case, another weird incident has already happened: the terrain inside the eye of the Condor of the Nazca lines was burned in a pattern resembling a crop circle, yet another skull of the Billion Killer found in the center. There were no victims of the incident.
Christmas, Ryuuguu, Jouka (dressed completely in white which complements Ryuuguu’s black nicely) and the local guide investigate the scene.
Ryuuguu really changed after going through Alive. While he still has all his quirky mannerisms, he acts colder and Christmas gets the unsettling feeling that his usually friendly colleague now hates his guts. What’s more, Ryuuguu recently proposed to Jouka, which came completely out of the blue for someone seemingly as uninterested in relationships. Almost like he’s a whole other person.
Ryuuguu eventually leaves them to board a Cessna with the guide so they can examine the Nazca lines from above. Christmas talks with Jouka. She also noticed the change in their fellow detective, but accepts that nobody stays the same forever.
--
The Cessna crashes.
The guide survives for long enough to explain the accident. Something weird happened to the engine and made them crash. Up until the last moments Ryuuguu encouraged the guide to escape while staying calmly in his seat. His last words were:
“So this is fate… nothing can save you from it… Ryuuguu Jounosuke dies here...”
Detectives aren’t exempt from death. Four million people die every day in the Crime Olympics, Ryuuguu and the guide being just a tiny fraction of that number. Accidents happen. Christmas knows this, but the shocking news are still too much to handle. Jouka starts wearing black.
Christmas thinks that maybe it wasn’t a complete accident. Maybe Ryuuguu was aware of how much the disease changed him and gave up on life. It’s been confirmed that he showed up at the plane’s checkup that day, which someone with his talent for breaking machines would never do to avoid touching something important by accident.
Jouka believes it could have been murder, but can’t guess the details. She says cryptically that she’s certain that “Jounosuke died, but Ryuuguu is still alive”. Christmas desperately wants to believe this means there were TWO Ryuuguus present, one of them a disguised stranger. The real Ryuuguu caught on and sabotaged the engine, thus killing the imposter.
But no matter how hard they hope and investigate, they have to accept that the person who was at the checkup and who died in the crash was the same original Ryuuguu Jounosuke, and he will never come back again.
The only thing they may do is to turn away from the unchangeable past and focus on the future.

STONEHENGE
--
Hikimiya Yuuya was lucky enough not to be in the JDC building when it exploded, but it still had a giant emotional impact on him. So many people died, Ajiro Souji went missing, and some like Kirika Mai are still fighting for their life in the hospital.
The Billion Killer struck once again on August 24th, this time causing pieces of the famous Stonehenge to fall over and kill some tourists, the mandatory glistening skull found at the scene. On the same day a similar case happened in France: over a hundred people were killed when the famous Carnac Stones somehow fell on their heads, as if they had been teleported high into the air.
Hikimiya is staying at the Paris headquarters of the international detective organization DOLL, which occupies a large building complex surrounding the Place des Vosges. He’s tasked with assisting one of only seven S-rank detectives in the world. Seven may seem like very few, but it’s actually a lot; often there was just a single S-detective in existence for years, and having more than four at once was unheard of until the last few decades. In comparison, there are over five thousand registered A-detectives.
JDC isn't looking too good in the rankings. They do have two S-ranks (Ajiro and Juku) and one A-rank (Yaiba), but Kirika is C-rank, Jounosuke and Nemu are both D, and poor, poor Hikimiya never rose above an F.
The book gives us a handy list of S detectives, all of which will be highly relevant later. (In order: name — official DOLL title — less official DOLL nickname)
Zerofini Roi — Armchair Leader — Madame Alpha (from France)
Lemuria Sullivan — Knight in Night — Herr Omega (from Spain)
Desert Colosseum — Deus Ex Machina — Frau D (from Germany)
Ronely Queen — Whodunnit Magician — Mistress Queen (from USA)
Souji Ajiro — Philo Sphere — Mister Dick (from Japan)
Firannu Meiruneshia — Locked Empress — E-Mail (from Italy)
Juku Tsukumo — God of Detectives — Jukebox (from Japan)
[I still can’t believe it’s spelt Ronely Queen, and I have long given up on trying to find the correct way to romanize Meiruneshia's name. And I know that Ajiro’s nickname probably comes from “detective” just like Dick Gumshoe, but. MISTER DICK. Who’s responsible for this.]
A person chosen to be an S-detective stays listed as one until their death is confirmed. They will still be considered S-detectives even if they’re kicked out of DOLL (Lemuria Sullivan apparently was, but that's a story for another time).
Strangely enough, all of the S-detectives (aside from Lemuria) can speak fluid Japanese, the official explanation being that Firannu is a giant nerd interested in Japan and infected everyone with enthusiasm towards learning the language.
--
Hikimiya and Desert Colosseum / Frau D are both experts in data analysis. Their work room aside from the traditional shelves full of files also hosts a giant supercomputer, which is affectionately called Egg Mac because of its egg-shaped dome that the operator enters to access the interface.
Despite the nickname, Frau D is a guy. He’s a heavy corpulent man with a charming round face and a weird hairstyle that makes Hikimiya think of a plant (cut short in the back and sides, the rest grown into a slightly green tuft). He has a fastidiously kept thin moustache and skin that’s way too nice for a dude in his early thirties. He’s strangely fashionable too. Really likes chewing gum and popcorn.
Hikimiya has several problems with the man. One, Frau always calls him the equivalent of “boy”, which feels condescending, even though Hikimiya really is like a decade younger and pretty naive. Two, Frau loves stupid pranks like pretending he’s dead, and it’s hard to tell whether he says something seriously or in jest. Three, he changes the number lock to their work room all the time, so Hikimiya has to sit outside and painstakingly figure out the new code.
Frau states that Hikimiya is the one who should mature, learn how to keep cool, and examine the situation carefully instead of relying on preconceptions (and so falling for something like that death prank). He thinks Hikimiya may already be an E-rank detective, maybe even a D-rank, and Frau just wants to help polish his skills.
It’s true that Hikimiya now needs barely an hour to break the number lock instead of half a day… but it’s still insufferable.
--
Hikimiya also meets DOLL’s leader and the single best detective in the world, Madame Alpha. At first sight she seems to be a pretty normal friendly lady. She looks a lot like Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote and has that particular calming mom energy.
Hikimiya is a little awkward with introductions, which makes Frau poke fun at him, to which Madame just advises Hikimiya to never take anything Frau says too seriously. (“But I’m always serious~”, Frau responds.)
Madame states that she already found the culprit of the Carnac Stones case, talked with him, and he promised to go to the police station and turn himself in. (Frau criticizes her naivety, to which she responds like “it’s my case, I do what I want”.) But Madame already knows that it's not the case that Hikimiya wanted to ask about—rather, he wants to know if Ajiro Souji really died in the explosion. As expected from the greatest detective in the world, it's like she's reading his thoughts.
Madame’s unique and for now unexplained Zero Reasoning tells her that Ajiro Souji is still alive.

Later Hikimiya admits to Frau that he was surprised about Madame actually being a woman, considering that Frau is a man despite his nickname.
Frau explains that the nickname comes from the fact that in a way, he’s the actual Desert Colosseum's "wife" (Frau D = Frau Desert Colosseum). You see, Frau on his own is simply a talented A-detective. The one called Desert Colosseum is actually the advanced AI of the Egg Mac, and when Frau uses it for data analysis, together they reach the power equivalent to that of an S-rank detective.

CAPPADOCIA
--
Hikimiya meets up in a cafe with two of his colleagues who have just arrived in France to investigate the Carnac Stones case (Madame found the culprit, but the trick itself has yet to be explained). It’s Tsukumo Nemu and Ryuuguu Jounosuke, who have been investigating as a great duo lately.
Jounosuke and Nemu had been lucky enough that they were leaving the JDC building at the time of the explosion, so they came out pretty much unscathed. Nemu still worries about Kirika, but Jounosuke as always is good at putting others at ease with his words. Perhaps it’s because he treats words and languages as dear friends, and always takes great care using them. ...but then he also has all those mannerisms like talking about himself in third person, or calling everyone with a gendered suffix -shi or -jou instead of the expected -san.
Jounosuke gets persuaded to try the local sweet apple tea instead of his usual coffee. The waiter still accidentally brings coffee, and Jounosuke even dumps a bunch of sugar into it on reflex before they have it taken back. Hikimiya says that the tea is already sweet and doesn't need sugar, but Jounosuke's sweet tooth is a hard enemy to defeat. They exchange friendly banter, then Jounosuke out of nowhere tells Hikimiya a riddle, and when surprised Hikimiya can’t find the right answer, Jounosuke triumphantly adds just a tiny amount of sugar into the tea, because hey, he won, he deserves it.
Hikimiya enjoys the stupid banter, but still can’t fully relax because of something that happened the previous day...
--
When he and Frau were at work yesterday, they got news about a new case, this one in Cappadocia. The Billion Killer had somehow managed to instantly burn down the entire rock monastery together with a movie crew, so that only the rock base and yet another skull remained. Frau asked Hikimiya to gather data about the place in the library.
Cappadocia is a quite popular and mysterious tourist spot. There are even wacky theories about the underground city having been an ancient nuclear shelter. Apparently, naturally formed ancient layers with glass have been found in many deserts, and some theorize they had been created by the heat of ancient nuclear explosions. Hikimiya thinks this ancient nuclear war theory is as interesting as it is depressing. Maybe humans really don’t change.
Hikimiya was pretty upset with his day and with Frau, but at least he was looking forward to meeting Nemu and Jounosuke again.
As expected from a detective said to know even tomorrow's news, Frau D already knew about his protégé's future meeting and asked if Nemu was Hikimiya’s girlfriend. When Hikimiya said she wasn't, Frau casually asked if Jounosuke was his boyfriend, then, because from what Frau could see, Hikimiya’s utterly happy expression probably meant he was about to meet with a loved one. Hikimiya sputtered and insisted they’re all just good friends. [Oh Hikimiya, if only you knew what your pixiv tag looks like...]
Frau was still looking at him seriously, so Hikimiya just tried to give him the data on Cappadocia that he had asked for. But Frau then stated he didn't need it, because he had already investigated the topic by himself in full—he just wanted Hikimiya to learn how to use sources instead of blindly accepting information from another person.
Hikimiya’s frustration with his own helplessness and the world hit a peak at this moment, and before he could blink, he was already rambling out completely irrational angry nonsense, like “then why are you keeping me here if I'm so useless, oh I get it, you’re gay and only chose me as an assistant from the DOLL database because of my looks rather than my skills”.
Hikimiya himself wasn’t sure where the hell this line came from. Maybe because he was often perceived as gay despite not swinging that way at all [here described as “being normal”, fuck off], so he was just subconsciously directing any self-doubt away from himself. Or maybe he was afraid of people targeting him for his body or something.
...and also because Frau had once taken him to a place widely known for its gay clientele. That happened too. [Hikimiya, honey, I'm sorry to say this, but if it took you this long to realize a guy who invited you to THE Club Banana Café on a go-go night was gay, then I question your detective skills.]
Frau was at first shocked at this outburst, but then calmed down and asked, “How did you know that I’m gay?” [What do you mean how, you literally took him to- you know what, let's just settle on both these guys being absolute dumbasses.]
--
...so even now when he’s with his friends in a cafeteria Hikimiya can’t fully relax, because he’s still dreading the possibility that oh god, what if the man he’s currently stuck working under really just wants him for his body? Frau told him not to worry, sexual harassment was not at all his thing and he wouldn’t force anyone into a relationship, BUT WHAT IF. [Are we really doing the predatory gay trope? Are we really? Sigh.]
Anyway… they talk about the Crime Olympics some more, and Hikimiya and Jounosuke continue to banter like brothers.
Suddenly there’s a commotion. The waiter that served the detectives’ table stumbles over towards Jounosuke and vomits blood before falling dead.
Jounosuke takes it upon himself to investigate the death. He talks to the chef to learn what happened, then comes back to his friends with a weird expression.
He discovered that the spoon in the sugar bowl at their table didn’t have any fingerprints on it. Of course neither Hikimiya nor Nemu used it (the sweet tea didn't need sugar) and Jounosuke as always had his gloves on, but it’s weird that other patrons who had been sitting there earlier didn’t leave fingerprints.
The only explanation is that any fingerprints were wiped away by the murderer while he was adding poison to the sugar. The waiter probably accidentally poisoned himself with the sweetened coffee he took back to the kitchen. The incident likely wasn’t even a murder attempt directed specifically at the detectives, but just another one of the thousands of everyday chaotic crimes of the Crime Olympics. Jounosuke was incredibly lucky to have used only a little bit of the sugar for his tea. Hikimiya unwittingly saved his life.
Jounosuke can't stop blaming himself for the waiter’s death. Hikimiya knows that this feeling of guilt is partially born from the memory of that time in Geneijo when he couldn’t protect Souya. Hikimiya wasn’t even there at the time, so he has no idea what to say to Jounosuke to cheer him up. Just like every day in the Crime Olympics, he’s just left cursing his own helplessness.

I like the idea of getting cosmetics for a game through gameplay. I like the idea of patching in new cosmetics to earn through continuing to play the game periodically.
I dislike the idea of FORCING someone to play the game for a given amount of time in a rigidly enforced time frame if they want something, because if they don’t comply then they’ll never get the thing they want. Ever.
Fuck FOMO, basically.
What is FOMO? Well for the uninitiated, FOMO stands for “Fear Of Missing Out” and... I’ll admit it’s pretty low on the ranks of scummy game tactics but it’s no less annoying, and in the long term it leads to a sense of “oh, okay why bother?” which I have to assume is NOT the intended effect of forcing the player to continually play your game OR ELSE. A game is using FOMO whenever they are dangling something over your head and requiring a certain behavior in a certain timeframe or else they’re going to take away the possibility of EVER earning the thing.
I am particularly annoyed by this tactic because it’s taking something fun and just injecting it with bullshit, so that your fun is now tinged a slight shade of unpleasant brown... you know, from all the SHIT that’s now in it.
I reached a point playing Doom Eternal where I realized I wasn’t having fun anymore, because while I still enjoy the game’s combat just playing through it over and over to unlock the cosmetics in time started feeling like a job that wasn’t paying me... a job I knew I wouldn’t get a break from, because as soon as I was done unlocking one event’s cosmetics, the next event would start, and I’d have to get back to playing the game OR ELSE. So I stopped.
By now I’ve missed pretty much all the cosmetics from the previous event. As far as I know, those are now gone forever and I will never get them. Holy shit is THAT freeing! I’ve already missed out! The fear has passed! Why would I bother going back now? I’m free to leave it alone until I want to do that Ultraviolence run (because I’m still a Hurt Me Plenty scrub) or The Ancient Gods Part 1 hits! Now I can play games that have stuff for me to get WHENEVER THE HELL I WANT! FREEDOM!!!
Look obviously this manipulation tactic works, which explains why SO MANY GAMES do this now. Obviously no amount of complaining is going to change the minds of devs and publishers as long as they’re making bank. But then, asked nobody, “Chappy, how would YOU make this system?” WELL I’M GLAD YOU ASKED!
...it’s actually really simple just have a current event at the forefront and have a tab for past events. Let the player select which event they want to apply XP toward, and if they top out that event just automatically transfer it to the next event in line until the player manually selects another event. Instead of a time limit for a current event, display a countdown to the next event, at which time the current event will be shuffled to the past event tab.
There! Easy! Now you continually add new stuff to earn to the game, leading to an increasingly large library of cosmetics to unlock! Players will look at it and go “MAN LOOK AT ALL THAT STUFF! Ooh look at this one thing in THAT event! I’ll start putting XP towards THAT whenever I play! I look forward to unlocking that thing!” I assume this is an improvement over, “oops, either couldn’t play or didn’t want to play for a couple weeks... not enough time to catch up... why bother?” but what do I know? I’m just some pleb that can’t finish a story!

MXX Erron or MK 11 Erron?
Oh, whereto begin? If we’re talking about the cowboy’s physical appearance, I’m cooleither way, I think he looks hella fine in both MKX and MX 11. If we’re talkingabout his kit, I think I liked MKX better, the whole TNT toss thing seems kind of anuisance, especially for the AI… but since I’m a fanfic writer I think thisquestion is more related to Erron as a character so this might get a littlelonger than expected - if this wasn’t your idea, and you were only asking abouthis skins or abilities then sorry in advance for the long answer you’re aboutto read.
What Inoticed in MK 11 Erron is the same shallowness that first appeared in MKX –back then, Erron’s character was fresh and new, (having been introduced firstin the MKX comics) he had some distinctive qualities of his own but still, whenthe game was released, his characterization felt poor. It’s like in both games, his entire drive can be described with just one word: back in MKX, it was greedand now, in MK 11, it seems to be thrill. If you think it over, hisentire character description could have been Rain’s: violent, greedy and vain.
There’s along way from greed to thrill but, if you ask me, his new drivefeels just as shallow as his old one. How could he still be so greedy afterbeing a gun for hire for so long? Perhaps the cowboy is not really good withmoney but in all the years he’s lived, I’m sure he has learned a thing or twoabout savings. Now, how can he still be moved by thrill and thrill only afterso many years of doing basically the same things, over and over again? Hasn’the realized by now that, perhaps, the thrill he seeks can come from doingsomething other than being a gun for hire? How is it that he can still get thesame thrill for doing the same things he’s been doing for over 150 years now?Isn’t he tired? Hasn’t he matured?
His ending is the most reasonable one, though. He has spent so much time livingin the margins of time and then, he has spent so much time living inside timeitself that time doesn’t necessarily represent something meaningful to himanymore. This man doesn’t need a ticking clock anymore, he doesn’t have tomeasure time anymore – he’s seasoned, his longevity has provided him with a personalhourglass that has nothing to do with the notion of time that the Erron beforeShang Tsung understood. I believe that’s why he discards the hourglass sononchalantly – it’s more than a personal choice: not because of this thrillhe’s craving but because time, as we understand it, doesn’t mean a thing to himanymore. The time that others (Humans? Mortals? Conditions that are slowlyreceding for him) consider worthy or valuable doesn’t mean a single thing tohim, it represents no treasure, no bounty and, ultimately, no thrill. For agreedy man, the substance of time is no longer worth the effort since, for him,it doesn’t translate to a valuable currency anymore. And while others choose togo back and fix and save and rescue the ones they love from the intangiblegrasp of time; Black chooses not to. As the notion of time fades fromhis dictionary, the notion of every man for himself appears on the horizon:it’s been that way for a very long time now, it’s been so long he understandsthat looking into that hourglass and toying with history can resurrect aversion of himself he definitely wants to remain dead: the Erron Black beforeShang Tsung’s deal. The one that still had people to care about, the one whocared about time, the one that still had things and faces and places to lose.
Thatoriginal Erron Black has been discarded from the pages of history by the otherErron Black – the one we know.
When Erronchooses not to keep the hourglass, he chooses not to see the what if.What if he had never struck a deal with the sorcerer? What if he had stayed onthe other side of the portal? What if he had lived the original life thatshould have been his? What if he had aged? That man could have been a husband,a father, a grandfather… that man cannot resurface. That man is powerful enoughto make the cowboy question the meaning of his entire existence: what have youdone with all this extra time? Who have you become? What is keeping you alive?
Greed andthrill suddenly don’t look like much anymore, right?
In fact, some time ago someone asked me why I had chosen Arroya instead of Wickett whenI began rewriting Debris, even when NRS had chosen Wickett as canonicallycorrect. I explained back then that Arroya was, in fact, Wickett’s originalname; the name used during Erron’s youth, according to the timeframe of thestory. I didn’t quite understand back then why Erron himself would use the nameWickett instead of Arroya, I thought that maybe he used that name because thename Arroya hadn’t been used in a while and people could understand faster if he used the name Wickett instead but now I’m inclined to believe that maybe NRS’stown-and-name choice was more deliberate than I thought: it makes sense thatthey’d choose a town whose existence is divided in two, past and present, justlike Erron’s existence. If we think it over, Erron speaks about Wickett because he hasalready left Arroya behind. He can talk about this city (that doesn’t really represent him because it was never genuinely his) from a certain, comfortable distance and chooses not to dwell on the past because Arroya doesn’texist anymore, pretty much like the original Erron, the one before Shang Tsung.
Going backto the hourglass, and Erron’s ending, there’s something else on my mind: hediscards the hourglass, and the chance to rewrite history (his own history) ina rather despondent fashion. And while he chooses to do so, there’s something almostautomatic about that choice. It’s like, after being around for so long, he hasnow this extremely internalized notion of what he wants and what he doesn’twant. Going back and revisit his own past is first on the list of things hedoesn’t want. When he throws away the hourglass, he rejects the man that he wasbefore becoming almost eternal. He doesn’t need to dwell on this for too long,he doesn’t seem interested enough to even consider the chance. He’s alwayslooking forward now, he doesn’t stop anymore. And that perpetual motion resemblesthat of a clock, or an hourglass or time itself. When he throws away thehourglass, he throws away the simple human that existed long ago, in a town (Arroya)that has now become a different town. The parallelism is just exquisite.
When hethrows away the hourglass and lets time run freely onwards, he replicates themoment when Shang Tsung offered him unlimited youth – and he replicates it overand over again. He discards who he really is, the one he should have been, in order toembrace the existence of this other man, the one he has become.
I don’tknow if I prefer this rendition of Erron Black or his predecessor back in MKX. Bothversions seem equally vague, especially considering that the character couldhave been fleshed out and explored more thoroughly. The excessively exaggeratedtime gap that MKX introduced (what happened during those 150 years since Erronaccepted what Shang Tsung had to offer?) opened up the gates for a millionquestions and stories to take form but I still think MK 11 hasn’t exactlydelivered. Granted, we have now learned some things about the man, but it doesn’tseem to be enough in the long run. His story remains a mystery, for the mostpart, his personality still lacks depth. In fact, the most meaningful thingsabout him we’ve learned in MK 11 can be traced back to fanfiction. This gap of150 years allowed writers to explore the events of those fifteen decades whilefleshing out the character. The facts that he killed his own father, hated hismom, grew up around strong women, has a thing for the color red (especiallyred-haired women) and that basically he’s a man who has nothing to lose can allbe traced back to both Desperado and Debris in some way or another and while Ihaven’t talked about this to the wonderfully talented @hell-on-training-wheels (author of Desperado) I’mpositive she must have felt the same joy I felt when I heard those lines forthe first time. Of course, this could be a coincidence, but maybe they know the gap of time they’ve created has not beenquite explored yet and this is a way for them to allow writers to create andexplore on their own, providing the character with more than adjectives thatare nothing but vague conceptualizations, just like greed and thrill.
Last butnot least, there’s another thing I’ve been thinking of for quite some time now,and even though I’m merely going to introduce the idea (it could take an evenlonger post) I think it’s worth mentioning, especially considering Erron’sdecision to throw away the hourglass. This perpetual dichotomy we see in him - he’salways looking forward, he doesn’t seem to stop – pretty much like time itself –versus the existence and the presence of every one of the iconic elements that givelife to his character and pretty much mold this cowboy (he discards his past, perhaps he even despises the original man he was before the pact but at thesame time he clings to the morals, the mannerisms and even the fashion of hisown era) make me think that maybe he discards everything that can be consideredpersonal, but chooses to stay loyal to things that can be perceived aseverlasting. All this makes me think that, perhaps, Erron is afraid of dying. He’snot a coward, he’s not looking for redemption, he’s clearly not trying to makeamends with his own past and I wonder if that’s because the man from his pastwasn’t infinite. His youth wasn’t evergreen, his life wasn’t everlasting. And whilehe’s always looking for this thrill; and while he even tells Skarlet that he likesto live dangerously, I wonder if, maybe, he’s afraid to even consider his own finitude.
Thanks forthe ask!

The Will to Power
A comprehensive theory of the core concepts within opm, and its relevance towards future character development. Here it is: a breakdown of the explanations provided within canon, connected through consistent character examples, and applying that towards how Genos can grow stronger too. Aka: formally presenting the long-awaited GENOS POWER THEORY.
Disclaimer: subject to revisions as more gets revealed within canon. Contains lore combining both manga and webcomic spoilers.
Words: ~5500
Tumblr media
The often overlooked, yet most vital component
As of the manga’s chapter 92, we now have two explanations for the pathways of power within the world of opm. From Dr. Genus’ explanation of his genetic research and the mechanism of limiters, to Psykos’ experimental method of monsterfication…both sides have spent ages and countless sacrifices attempting to find the secret to greater power, to ‘break through the limit of growth,’ but one of the most vital components they’ve always failed to account for was the individual’s inherent willpower.
Which is the inner, mental drive that compels one to keep going, the tenacity to stand up again and fight for one’s convictions, despite all other hellish external factors endured. The ability to consistently survive the absolute worst and then miraculously overcome what would otherwise become fatal. Both scientists can experiment to induce change indefinitely by forcing outward pressures upon their specimens all they want. But if the individual never had the drive or mental fortitude to endure the stresses to being with, the will to change for themselves (to truly desire it at their cores), or if they end up losing the will to live by giving up partway during the torturous process, then of course they will always fail, either by succumbing to compromised mediocrity or merciless death on the path towards greater power.
The exemplary outlier
Saitama will always remain the original successful exception. So far, he’s the only example of one who’s achieved limitless power (successfully broken through his limiter) through the merits of his own willpower. He persevered through an uncompromising training regimen, personally tailored to his own skill level (a personal hell scaled to his ‘ordinary’ limits; aka it would not be enough for those with higher potential), all for the sake of a simple, yet dedicated goal that aligned with the core values of who he truly wanted to become. An undefeatable, strongest hero with the ability to win in one punch. Yes, he had the focused (will)power to change and improve himself, to keep pushing himself with the intent and effort to achieve what he wanted without ever giving up, no matter how hard it got, and it was strong enough to break past his average body’s given limitations. That achievement is miraculous, remarkable and praiseworthy.
Tumblr media
The important key distinction is that Saitama is NOT a monster. Dr. Genus explained why: monsters are those who have fully forsaken their humanity and succumbed to their base complexes, so they are transformed/mutated/reborn into another being with a whole new limiter. Saitama has retained his original self and his humanity, but at the cost of his baldness and the growing feelings of alienation and boredom apart from all others who don’t sit at the same pinnacle as him. (With the extra meta layer on whether or not it was even worth it to burn that much effort into achieving the pinnacle of his craft when the results became personally unsatisfactory.) Unless others can figure out how to successfully break their given limiters too, Saitama will remain peerless in power and will never find the fulfilling, challenging fight he’s always longed for. (His ongoing dilemma and search for life’s fulfillment will then need to be found elsewhere, such AS…genuine relationships with others.) All of this will remain canon until ONE presents information otherwise to either further or challenge the lore of these established explanations.
‘Limit,’ ‘willpower,’ ‘half-assed,’ ‘compromised,’ ‘goal,’ ‘mindset,’ ‘seriousness,’ ‘spirit,’ ‘determination,’ …they’re all important and consistent, reoccurring keywords to keep in mind through the entirety of the story. Whenever they pop up in panels, declared in chapter titles, or are offhandedly mentioned by Murata or ONE in streams/interviews (look where Murata mentions ‘will’), then aha! Those moments become clues worth paying attention to that link back to the overall core concepts of the series itself.
Given explanations within canon
One of those core concepts (aside from the limiter concept) is that of 気合 (Kiai), chi, aura, willpower, fighting spirit…they’re ALL synonymous names for the same general, encompassing idea: one representing the inner strength/energy that everyone in the opm world naturally possesses, the only difference is in the potential/ability to hone, channel and manifest it over the course of people’s lifetimes. Existing varying levels depending on individual effort, training, or natural gifts. This energy is also closely tied to psychic power, where psychics can learn to directly manipulate this energy against one’s will. HOWEVER those with a strong enough willpower/spirit become ‘unbendable’, or ‘too heavy’ and can resist such psychic effects. ONE explains it all here (webcomic ch102):
Tumblr media
Tatsumaki: “Even non-psychics have energy flowing throughout their body. Scholars call it things like ‘chi’ (気) or ‘aura’…I couldn’t bend them (Garou and Golden Sperm) either.”
Fubuki: “Strength of will is directly connected to psychic resistance. The reason (her power) doesn’t work (on him) is thanks to Saitama’s unusually thick spirit.”
This spiritual ‘power’ is therefore something internal, originating in the mind, that’s neither inherently good nor bad, and that everyone has the capability to possess (even non-psychics). But when channeled and/or honed correctly, its resulting force can manage to surpass beyond the body’s own physical limitations. The House of Evolution arc proved that one’s biology or physical status doesn’t matter. One’s level of intelligence or talent doesn’t affect its strength either. What does matter is having the persistence to endure, with the determination/mindset to never give up or falter, towards a serious goal that’s true to oneself. (Moral alignment doesn’t matter either, but only in the case if it conflicts with one’s true self/desires, as we’ll see.) One also cannot be held back by regrets, wavering second thoughts, or lapses in self-confidence. (Examples of this would be both Mumen and Fubuki’s complexes thinking they’re aren’t ‘good enough’ to compete and progress past a certain hero rank, so they are mentally limiting themselves on top of their current capabilities.) In essence, it’s like the liberation to freely set out and achieve what you truly want to do, without letting anything else limit hold you back (which is precisely what Saitama did).
Applied character examples within canon
This webcomic content (ch102-104) explaining the mechanics behind ‘strength of will’ came out from Sept-Nov 2015, the same relative timeframe the manga introduced the similar concept of ‘fighting spirit’ in the Metal Bat vs Garou fight:
Tumblr media
(THESE definitive manga pages came out in Dec 2015, just slightly later than the webcomic’s). This publication overlap was not just coincidental; ONE was likely covering his bases through both mediums, by adding foreshadowing to the manga based on what he’d developed at the same time in the webcomic. (Which is also why reading BOTH at the same time is fun to catch writing parallels like this. :D) Establishing concepts that would only become relevant in the manga again much later. And this fight, which does not even exist within the original webcomic, is important for introducing this physical application of mental strength: every time Metal Bat tanks damage, even severe enough to take him out, he gets stronger. Why? It’s him channeling his willpower to keep going, aka ‘fighting spirit.’ Visualized though the literal aura effect steaming off his body...and bat, as an extension of himself. (This will become important. Also keep a lookout for whenever Murata repeatedly uses this same visual effect on other characters too.)
Some may say this ‘fighting spirit’ is an ability only unique to Metal Bat, but that’s not true. Because ch102 of the webcomic had already immediately established that everyone possesses this energy within them. So it is a universal trait that has the capability to be honed, channeled, and potentially even manifested as psychic power. (The latter would be fascinating if true!) And we SEE a combined application of this mental power come back in full swing in the manga’s ch92: where Garou now demonstrates his growing psychic resistance and ‘fighting spirit’ (気合):
Tumblr media
To make this recollection even more blatant, Murata even went back to edit in a panel of Metal Bat where Garou remembers this:
Tumblr media
To clarify, this is not Garou somehow simply ‘copying’ or ‘absorbing’ Metal Bat’s ‘ability.’ Even Psykos is surprised at what’s happening here and doesn’t understand it either (despite all her research, she’s failed to account for this key component). Just how is Garou able to move and resist her psychic bindings? Yup, it’s precisely that same mental ‘power’ as introduced in the webcomic’s ch102: his own strength of will, aka ‘fighting spirit.’ Even Garou did not fully understand it when he faced Metal Bat, but now, after enduring so much sustained lethal damage himself, adapting and coming back stronger each time, he recognizes it as the same thing happening to himself.
But it was no easy feat for Garou to even survive everything’s he’s been through up to this point! He’s fought and endured it all: fevered, outnumbered, poisoned, gunned down, beaten, sliced up, impaled, incinerated...all in rapid succession with little to no pause for rest. (Fun fact: note the keywords used in the ch titles during all those events.) He could have died any number of times (very dangerous, even called out as recklessly ‘suicidal’ at points), but according to Psykos’ observations, overcoming all of that is the contributing factor towards his rapid growth in physical strength. But forcing external stressors on him isn’t everything; the reason why he’s survived it all isn’t just plot armor, but rather because of his tenacious willpower to never give up. He’s never succumbed because his adaptive level of ‘fighting spirit’ has honed enough to resist both psychic powers and endure sustained physical torment. Truly, his stubborn resilience towards everything thrown at him has become so extraordinary that even Garou wonders (on several occasions) how his body has been able to keep up and endure it all too. This is the concept of ‘strength of will’ at work here, enabling him to persist past his body’s expected capabilities. When continuously put to the test under harsh conditions, it steadily adapts and grows stronger. If he keeps it up, he has the potential to eventually break through his limits, just like Saitama did.
However, Garou won’t be able to achieve it the same way as Saitama, because while that method was plenty to push past Saitama’s ‘average’ capabilities, the same muscle training (especially for someone already thoroughly trained in martial arts) won’t be anywhere near enough to breach the ceiling of Garou’s prodigious potential. While the story has set many similar parallels between them and their growth, they have different set limits. For Garou to even succeed the same, his tailored ‘personal hell’ to overcome must be scaled comparatively harsh and ravaging, as we have seen...
Its internal, driving source
Then, the only missing factor is just...where is the source of Garou’s tenacity, his willpower, his drive that compels him to keep standing up, coming from? Both the manga AND webcomic (double bonus: same ch92!) ask the same thing:
Tumblr media
Psykos: “This determination of yours, where does it come from?”
Genos: “Where does he get this blood-curdling tenacity from...?”
WHERE indeed. And it does matter. Because while the origin for a strong willpower exists in everyone, for its strength to persist and adapt further, it must be sustained or based on something in the first place... Fueled by some unwavering conviction, ideal, belief, mission, feeling, desire, or goal that’s important enough to commit one’s life towards, up to the extent one would rather risk certain death than fail to achieve. Ranging from what drives us to get out of bed every day, all the way towards a potential willpower (essentially, a life force) so tenacious enough, it can best the pull of death. Otherwise without that motivation behind one’s actions, there’s nothing to channel into the eventual superpower that can miraculously move mountains. No prospect to succeed at breaking past one’s limits to achieve the otherwise thought impossible. However, it’s something that can’t be simply granted/received from the outside or others (exception: the powers granted to Homeless Emperor from ‘God’); the influence or spark of inspiration can, but the answer for the willpower itself, the driving force to act upon, must birth from somewhere genuine deep within.
SURELY, for Garou to have endured all that he has, by overcoming so many tortuous near-death experiences so far, there exists some origin for his ‘fighting spirit.’ And yes, we’ve seen the basis for his convictions formed since his childhood, with him assuming a role he believes is most appropriate, and then adhering to a misguided method he thinks will influence the change he wants to see in the world...but he (manga Garou especially) is still in the process of defining precisely who he is and what he fights for. The more he experiences, ‘it’ gradually gains in strength while steadily rising in clarity.
He’s always had genuine, strong feelings that motivate him (absolutely no doubt!), but there’s always been a lingering contradiction between what he says he wants to do and how he applies that into actual action. Like a mental set-back (hmm, another so-called limiter?) from all his stubborn denial that’s preventing him from realizing who he actually is, and therefore not fully understanding where his deeper feelings lie... Fortunately and interestingly enough, the incidents that forcibly put those feelings and his character to the test the most – the times that push him further beyond what he ever thought possible, resulting in his greatest bursts of strength – are actually those where his true self is brought to light in sharper clarity. Namely...all those impressive feats he’s chosen to overcome for the sake of protecting Tareo. Shielding him from a bullet rain, shrugging off getting stabbed and sliced to death, resisting absolute incineration...each time, Garou never had to risk himself that far to face any of that, yet he conjured the resolve (the willpower!) to stand up and fight for what he truly cares about. Compelled to risk his life for the sake of something that runs deeper than he can fully comprehend...truly, that kind of unconditional sentiment channeled into an unstoppable force is strong indeed.
But, protecting what he cares about (Tareo) isn’t the only thing that drives him. His personal ideals and worldview get further challenged the more he fights alone in the MA base. Repeatedly pitting his life against any injures or opponents he faces, as he comes to a greater understanding of what brought him here in the first place. Defining his determination and raison d'être as he goes, such as in his important fight vs Darkshine (webcomic ch68):
Tumblr media
Now, it’s possible ONE may rework what happens in the manga’s version of this fight entirely (and beyond; EDIT: except for the narration, the manga’s adaptation has kept most of Garou’s words here intact!), but at least here, Garou solidifies a conviction worthy enough to bet his life against, overcoming his lethal injuries and absolutely refusing to lose no matter what...but will the reason he concludes bring him accurate enough clarity for the path he swears to take? Enough to forge a will strong enough to succeed at breaking past his limiter? (Manga edit: presented as, “Garou’s limiter seems to be breaking!”)
To simplify an analogy of the mechanics behind this mental process would be like finding the proper fuel to push the horsepower of a car/vessel past the output of its own frame. Where the key components are 1) fuel: goal, 2) horsepower: willpower, 3) frame: limiter. Compromise the fuel as an unfit source for the (will)power, and the overall performance either becomes substandard or falls apart entirely. And what do we see happen?
The consequences of a ‘wrong’ path
Fast-forward to his arc’s conclusion in the webcomic, and we see the consequences of settling for a compromised goal that conflicts in accordance with one’s true self/desires. Garou gets so close to breaking his limiter, but ultimately fails. Why? He showed so much promise and unshakable resolve to get here, so where on his path did he go wrong? As we learn, he fought so hard (continually risking his life!) not for the benefit of monsters, but rather to unite and reform society enough (through fear) to incite the arrival of a true hero. Choosing the contradictory role of the ‘evil’ aggressor to bait one out, when Garou himself was never truly evil at his core. As Saitama perceptively puts it: he was always a rather ‘soft guy’ with an ideal image of a hero in mind all along, but thanks to all his deep-set stubborn denial, he never allowed himself to fully realize this. (In this case, all his stubborn tenacity became a blinding fault that ended up holding him back from realizing the truth.) So Saitama calls him out for taking an indirect (half-assed) approach for his goal, rather than directly work towards becoming the ideal of a true hero himself:
Tumblr media
Saitama: “It was a mistake to lower the hurdle right before the goal. A half-assed objective can’t succeed.”
Saitama’s words give Garou the wake up call, reality check, and clarity he’s always needed to hear...but the harsh truth becomes will shattering. Thankfully, all hope isn’t lost, because the one who actually picks him back up again, and ‘saves’ him by resparking his will to continue, is Tareo. By finally getting through to him and vouching for the heroism Garou’s always shown...Garou gains the basis to try again ‘next time’ in a more appropriate, constructive manner that’s truer to himself. He still has the potential and power to succeed, but now without being bound limited by the misguided mindset from his childhood anymore.
Garou’s arc shows us this huge, sweeping, in-depth example of what it takes and then ultimately what NOT to do (can’t end up choosing the ‘easy way out’) to truly succeed at something. And he’s not the only character to which this applies. Everything presented thus far will now culminate with Genos, and the speculative steps he can take to achieve greater power too.
The next who can succeed: GENOS POWER THEORY
(The following has been in the works since 2016, but nothing since then has disproven it – on the contrary, waiting for more content has only built on it – so now is as good as ever to finally present what I’ve had in mind for him this whole time. Everything ONE has shown only leads me to believe that the possibility is there for Genos to have his ‘next time’ to succeed too.)
From the panel above, ONE framed it in a way so that Saitama’s words apply to Genos’ situation as well: in his desperate haste to gain power and seek revenge against the Mad Cyborg, he chose to forsake his fleshy body and become a cyborg himself. Essentially, like choosing the more enticing, easily available approach with the quickest results (not unlike monster cells by the way, which are confirmed unsuccessful methods too), by looking outside for the solution (looking to both Kuseno and Saitama for the answers to power), instead of working hard to achieve that goal within himself directly. Without the logistics of his cyborg transition/rehab into account, it’s like in his young mind’s insatiable impatience for power, he sought the equivalent of instant gratification. Logically, now his choice appears like a short-sighted, fatal mistake that’s permanently screwed himself over, since now his body’s performance will always be limited (on top of his given limiter) by the output of his technological parts and Kuseno’s knowledge on how to improve them. (Kuseno won’t live forever to keep up with him either.) Time again, he’s faced with the bitter reality that he cannot rely on parts those alone.
Tumblr media
So then, where is his hope? What about his own power? This is precisely why I believe ONE designed him as a cyborg in the first place. (His struggles facing personal weakness and powerlessness were never just for the sake of reoccurring gags, and ONE would never keep him stagnant as the deuteragonist either.) Because now, Genos is forced to figure out the correct solution the hard way, by overcoming THIS extra physical limitation imposed on him, to realize the answer he’s always sought MUST come from within. It shouldn’t matter that he doesn’t have his original body anymore, because in the opm world, greater power doesn’t come from having the chosen biology/genetics, specialized parts, or even natural born talent/gifts (remember the House of Evolution arc)...it comes from the process of strengthening one’s inner willpower itself. The remaining key to all of this lies in the fact he still has his organic brain, the place where everyone’s capability for this mental power originates, so that means Genos still has the potential to utilize it too.
Then, why hasn’t he? (Or has he but never realized?) What is his problem? What can he even do to reliably harness that kind of power? That same power as demonstrated by others (if Garou can develop it and figure it out, then why can’t Genos)? Intelligence, battle experience, reacting and analyzing are strengths he’s currently working on that will help, but shouldn’t Genos already have enough determination for a set goal in mind? If that’s not enough, then what is it exactly that he lacks?
Tumblr media
As it turns out, Genos is not just limited by his cybernetic body, but also by the mindset he carries himself. His main problem has always been a mental one. (Doubled down by the frustrations caused by his self-defeatist attitude and disappointment when things go wrong too.) No matter the shinier upgrades or battle experience he receives, he cannot progress past this vital barrier if he always treats himself as a replaceable, disposable weapon. It’s then no wonder his body always turns so inexplicably frail, prone to breaking and losing limbs all the time, when he jumps headfirst into battle with such a lifeless disregard for his own being. Such a hollow shell for armor can’t possibly stand up to greater opponents with the will to pierce right through that.
But then, it’s curious to me that his head remains his literal strongest defense.
Tumblr media
(Genos no, that’s recklessly dangerous!) Now, why would this be? Did Kuseno only reinforce the encasing of his brain (his most vital part), while purposely leaving the material of the rest of his body more vulnerable? Sending him out in the field with only substandard weapons and armor as his defense? While Kuseno giving his brain extra protection is smart, him lapsing in thorough efficiency for the rest of him seems unlikely to me. It becomes a much different picture when realizing this is likely not Kuseno’s doing or fault at all (or even just ONE playing with Genos’ plot armor). Because if Genos only sees the body granted to him as a replaceable tool, then where does he keep his sense of self, if he doesn’t even regard himself as human anymore? Hmm, it’s like all his desperation, resolve, and internal feelings are suck inside his mind without getting anywhere. Like his will itself is trapped within the cold metal encasing of his chassis without getting properly channeled.
Channeled? Yes. Remember back to what the Metal Bat fight showed us. Not just the introduction of ‘fighting spirit,’ but THIS as well:
Tumblr media
Where Garou even makes it a deliberate point to emphasize just how much power such a simple, metal weapon holds. Of course, later in a bonus chapter, this is said:
Tumblr media
Hmm, the explanation for an ‘unbreakable’ metal bat, huh. Conveniently provided for by the HA whenever requested/needed too. Now that feels like a red herring to me. Instead, even if he’s not consciously aware of it (his intelligence is rated a 3 in the databook after all), the likely reason why he’s able to turn his bat into an unbreakable weapon is because during his increased moments of desperation, he can channel his ‘fighting spirit’ through it as a natural extension of himself. While Genos, who’s entirely built from metal that Kuseno could manage to acquire from various ‘unbreakable’ sources too, but who is still fighting with such flimsy defenses, is most definitely not. Any willpower/fighting spirit that Genos has is still pent up within the confines of his hard head without correctly reaching the extremities of his own limbs. He’s not effectively using his body as an natural extension of himself when he can’t even see himself as human anymore. Again, he’s mentally bound. Oh, Genos...
Metal Bat is just one example allowing for the possibility of strengthening the inorganic, Garou is another for showing the grueling process of developing ‘fighting spirit’ too, while Saitama is the ultimate example of everything coming together in a complete package. For Genos to successfully develop the same, to the point he can push past the output of his own frame and achieve greater power too, we need to reexamine his key components: his fuel (goal), willpower, and limiter(s).
Just how exactly can Genos improve?
First, what fuels him to keep going? For whenever he flings himself into battle, with deadly precision and almost an entire lack of self-preservation, what does he have that’s so important to him, it compels him to resist and keep going no matter the hopelessness of the situation? He’s already established upfront that his mission in life is to become strong enough to find and defeat the Mad Cyborg that destroyed his hometown and family. For 4+ years, he’s been running on those intense, pent up feelings of hatred, rage, frustration and grief…manifested into the desire for revenge, and by dedicating his remaining life and humanity for the sake of the dead. Without having a proper emotional outlet or time to grieve and heal from his trauma, he’s essentially been running around this whole time chasing intangible phantoms from the past. Is that even a goal viable enough for the long-term? (It’s definitely not a very healthy or constructive one, that’s for sure.) What about his plans after?
Ch108 of the webcomic even asks the hypothetical questions, what if the Mad Cyborg’s already dead, what would Genos do then? Or if he’s still alive, how can Genos even gauge if he’s strong enough to defeat him as he is now? He can’t know. Based on memories he can barely remember and leads that are virtually nonexistent, it’s still too fuzzy and inconclusive of an objective to adhere all his efforts towards or use as a guidepost for his progress. He needs something with much more reliability, clarity, and viability, because in the desperate throes of the moment, something vague won’t help him when his actual life depends on it. So Genos, what else is there? Attaining the S Class top 10? Still not strong enough, or even with enough personal value to risk his life for, when it’s incomparable to the heights of Saitama. Ah. There it is. Saitama. As Genos progresses over the course of the story, his priorities have started to shift as he reflects on what is most important to him. Rather than focusing all his intent and efforts on those who are already dead, it’s much better to live and fight for those who are still alive. For those who matter to him: Kuseno and Saitama, who are now part of his new makeshift family, they allow him the chance to finally heal emotionally and find new inspiration to live for. By living with Saitama, Genos has even started to form another goal that’s worth striving for that will sustain him through the long-term even after the Mad Cyborg: to become strong enough to remain by Saitama’s side.
Next, his willpower. Some of his most defining traits are his dead-set seriousness and determination. (To the point it’s comically and affectionately referred to as ‘no chill.’) He should have loads of useable willpower/fighting spirit at his disposal, yet his performance still turns up short. Having a viable goal to work towards and sustain it, and then being able to correctly channel it (as mentioned with Metal Bat’s example) are important, but so is overcoming the subconscious mental barriers holding him back. For one, is Genos even aware of the current power he holds, without attributing the credit to others or his special parts? Because there is at least one instance where he demonstrates the willpower to achieve the otherwise thought impossible:
Tumblr media
Not just a moment to simply dismiss as a freak incident, because here (during the fight he was directly inspired by Saitama by the way), his refusal to be dismissed compelled him to fuse his severed body back together again. A feat previously thought impossible for him (just how on earth could he ‘heal’ severed metal?!), yet right then, he momentarily gained the power to surpass his body’s limitations. And yet, the incident practically goes by unacknowledged by him, as he’s shortly taken down by acid and distracted by Saitama’s answer for ‘more power.’ But the potential is still there for him! He can do it if he only perseveres and realizes! (And not by asking or relying on others to just give him all the answers either!)
So what is ‘more power’ to him? How can the willpower he already has be developed and trained even further? We’ve seen what Garou’s had to endure to get stronger, but to Genos, suffering the same physical pain won’t have the same effect on him. Instead, his tailored ‘hell’ to endure and overcome must come significantly much more from the psychological side. Through stressors that repeatedly tax and test his mental state to the brink rather than just his body. (The mental factors for Genos just keep piling…) And so, much of the growth we’ve actually witnessed from him over the course of his development comes from overcoming the torment of repeated failure.
A harsh punishment that could discourage and/or break the will of anyone, so it’s quite miraculous that even after all his losses, he’s still never stopped coming back to try again later or permanently gone off the deep end by now. It’s a strength that he’s never mentally succumbed under the relentless frustration and pressure. Instead, he always analyses what he did wrong, learns from his mistakes, and applies that into how he can improve next time. Little by little, by comparing him from the start of the story to now, he’s definitely improved. By becoming more aware of himself and his surroundings (to not always let his guard down!) and utilizing more efficient battle tactics, he’s turning into a much wiser fighter. Even coming to acknowledge the value of his own life much more than before.
Tumblr media
^Yes Genos, be aware of your limits, because in this story, you are forcibly bound by many that you’ve yet to overcome.
Then what are his limits? Can Genos eventually break his limiter too? Does he still even have one? It’s a question often debated. His brain certainly still has one (along with many compounded mental barriers), but if his curious placement on the monster side of the spread during Dr. Genus’ limiter explanation means anything (EDIT: Murata’s since edited that spread for the published volume), would his similar ‘transformation’ into a new body make him gain a new limiter EACH TIME it’s replaced? Then uhoh, Genos needs to slow down and stay with one to acclimate as his perceived, natural ‘body,’ or he’ll be stuck in an endless loop trying to surpass his rebooted limits every time. (And he won’t get anywhere like that!) If that’s not the case, and his cyborg body doesn’t even have a limiter anymore (unlikely, because the output of his physical frame is always limited), then his brain’s still applies anyway. In either case, he will need to learn to fully accept, cherish, and value himself (as human!) first.
That’s why it’s so important he remains in contact with Saitama. Saitama’s calming influence is extremely vital to the stability of Genos’ wellbeing. Before they’d ever met, Genos was heading down such a self-destructive path, he really could have gone off the monstrous deep end to no return… ONE could still take his character arc down many dark possibilities, since Genos will likely have to endure much more psychological torment to grow stronger… (And then his once hidden placement on the monster side of the limiter spread becomes that much more ominous. But ONE won’t simply make his story a rehash of Garou’s either; he’s got different, long-term plans for Genos.) His road will be long and arduous regardless, as a gradual slow burn over the course of the story rather than neatly contained within any single arc. But no matter what happens, Saitama will be there.
If Tareo is Garou’s important link to his humanity, preventing him from fully becoming a monster, then Saitama (and Kuseno) are that vital link for Genos to remain in touch with his humanity as well. Vital enough to bring him new inspiration and newfound purpose in life to the point he will no longer have the necessity to think of his ‘self-destruct’ option as his last resort anymore.
Therefore, the words Saitama gave at the beginning of the story:
Tumblr media
Where he mentions the familiar terms of ‘mental strength’ and ‘spirit’ in his advice to Genos...have actually always rung true. What the reader was originally supposed to take away as a throwaway line within Saitama’s bs, has in fact been a relevant chekhov's gun all along. This whole time, ‘a change in mindset will yield to greater strength’ has always been a viable approach in the path towards achieving greater power. :’)
Thank you for reading, and always keep an open eye out for what ONE has in store next! :D

Platforms: Xbox One/Series X|S, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch and PC + Stunning visuals + Excellent atmospheric tension + Striking sound design – Far too short – Gameplay too simplistic – Story is interesting though barely present Not for lack of quality or disappointment but simply for MORE! Evil Inside does a lot within this tight timeframe and it does it well but like the house itself, the desire for more is inescapable. The tone, tension and striking visuals compliment what little story there is wonderfully and end result is likely to leave most players wanting more. The sound design is just as effective with sharp, twisted sounds and ominous rumbling to create the sensation that the player is not alone.Įvil Inside is criminally short considering how effective of an atmosphere it manages to create and story it tells within the confines of less than a dozen rooms or areas. The house is so beautifully realised and the lighting appropriately elevates the tension at key moments, particularly when the house becomes illuminated with a demonic red tone. While extremely short it does manage to feel adequately tense, due large in part to the incredible visuals. Littered with jump scares, effective manipulation of lighting and spooky apparitions, Evil Inside is sure to satisfy players with an appetite for the supernatural and disturbing spirituality. Luckily this means a player that may feel lost can easily find and trigger what they need to progress, possibly even by accident. This can cause a little confusion, especially as this is at no point explained and sounds that may seem like just a creepy distraction are actually cues to indicate something somewhere has happened.Īs the house is small, particularly early in the game before opening up with progression, there aren’t many places to explore and can be fully backtracked through in less than a minute. Doors in particular may not open unless certain items have been found or specific noises have been heard. The solutions to the scenarios thrown at the player are combinations of physical interactions with key items within the house and audio cues. Completing this game is as simple as navigating the house ten times which can be done in as little as half an hour. Any change is essential to progression and in most cases the story. A previously locked room may now be accessible or an object that wasn’t there before has now appeared. Playing as Mark the player must simply find their way through the house ten times.Įach time the player passes through a particular door, they are sent back to the first room of the house though this time something will be different. There are no enemies, no ways to die or lose, there are only environmental puzzles to solve and answers to find, both on a character level and literally in regards to the puzzles. I picture the male responsible for Lily's death who I saw in the garage and wish I'd confronted him.Evil Inside is a linear experience unfolding within a changing yet familiar environment. In a statement, Ms Sullivan branded Haines as "pure evil" and said he looked her "straight in the eyes, knowing what he had done" to her "beautiful" daughter as he passed her. 'The truth will haunt me for the rest of my life' But for decades that malice has thankfully lain silent. The teenager was later found face down and topless in a nearby reservoir after Haines made her walk to the lake and "forcibly" removed her cream lace top.Īfter murdering Miss Sullivan, Haines walked past his victim's mother, Anna Sullivan, as she waited to pick her daughter up from a nearby garage. THE EVIL INSIDE by Heather Graham (Krewe of Hunters Book 4) Reviewed in the United States on JRating: 4.5 Stars Lexington House, overlooking New England's jagged coastline, has been the witness to madness and murder throughout its history. One Consumer's Observations of the Mental Health Care System in America
The mental health framework is a one of a kind culture. Psychiatry itself is, not normal for some other clinical claim to fame. Mental health is an encased framework. That implies it is a world inside a world. The specialists, advisors, patients, and backing laborers assume jobs. It's a corresponding climate. Every major part in the framework permits the other individual the chance to showcase their job. For instance, the specialist gives you an analysis that has no premise (Yes this occurs every now and then). You, the patient, having total confidence in the forces of the conduct health framework, acknowledge this determination as the absolute truth. In time, you start to see certain practices and musings that you accept might be an indication of your alleged disease. You re-visitation of your primary care physician and report these indications. Your therapist concurs with your perceptions and sets up them in your clinical account. He additionally embeds his definitive remarks to help his conclusion. Thusly, the two players in the relationship are commonly approved in their jobs.
At the point when one has been assuming the patient part for such a long time, an individual starts to distinguish oneself as a "psych tolerant." That's what your identity is. This is the term that characterizes your very presence. You have a place with the mental health framework. Before long enough you locate that each movement you connect with yourself in is identified with your problem and the prescription your primary care physician endorsed to stifle it. It's a miserable analysis for sure. It's more troubled still for the individual who unnecessarily battles against an undefinable imperfection in their character as though the determination were the unquestionable truth. I recognize the way that the agitating situation I am painting here isn't valid for each mental patient.
Eventually, the Protecc Mental Health finds the advantages of being named mentally sick. There are mental health laborers, for example, caseworkers who help the "customer" in getting a free living remittance from the Federal government as Social Security Disability Income or Supplemental Security Income in whatever negligible sum it might be. I will include for comfort that federal retirement aide incapacity benefits are accounted for (by the legislature) to run dry in 2016. A customer is regularly qualified with the expectation of complimentary lodging, health care, food help, and substantially more. The mentally sick individual may even have the privilege under certain handicap laws to bring a pit-bull into a no-pet private network. Actually, you could even take it on a business aircraft. The explanation is essentially in light of the fact that your specialist esteemed it vital that you have an enthusiastic help creature (oh no was that a mystery?). Try not to misunderstand me. I'm certain there are individuals who require a partner creature for their passionate health. I'm doing whatever it takes not to be impolite to the individuals who are battling. What I'm stating that there are motivating forces incorporated with the framework for some individuals to acknowledge their conclusion and assume out their job.
There are caseworkers and effort laborers that will go to court with you, and promoter for your benefit under the steady gaze of the appointed authority when you cross paths with the law. They will assist the mentally sick with the entirety of their own issues. What a deal! Run out and educate the entirety of your companions concerning it. Let the administration deal with you. It makes being a mental patient appear to be a lot more appealing. Is there any good reason why anyone wouldn't need a therapist name to them crippled? Once more, I'm being snide to come to my meaningful conclusion that individuals, who are inappropriately marked with a DSM V determination, risked getting reliant on the mental health framework for their requirements.
This sort of social government assistance urges individuals to surrender their desire and inspiration. It ingrains the possibility that living a negligible presence is adequate. I, for one, have faith in the enormity individuals can accomplish for themselves and the world by putting forth a concentrated effort.
Recollect this. When you get into the mental health framework your odds of getting out are thin. There are various purposes behind this. Fundamentally in light of the fact that the specialist or clinician has you persuaded that you have a genuine clinical issue, which you can't deal with yourself. We as a whole realize that is strange. Numerous individuals deal with their downturn and nervousness amazingly well without the utilization of mental prescriptions. In the event that Ativan quiets your nerves and causes you work, at that point that is incredible. Then again, I have seen a lot of individuals become dependent on narcotics. These medications are risky. I wouldn't place your confidence in the security of the antidepressants either. I think the drug monsters rush to call attention to that because of the various legal claims documented against them.
Some fault can be set on the drug organizations for this unnatural medication reliance. As I was composing this article, I rode NAMI's site (National Alliance for Mental Illness) and saw "In Our Own Voice," a government funded training program, is supported by an award from Eli Lily. This is the drug monster that produces mental medications like Prozac, Zyprexa, and Cymbalta. I accumulate (without a lot of mental exertion) that Eli Lily's liberality is an exposure mission to make them seem as though one of the heroes in the mental field, and subsequently, help deals. As I surfaced the Internet, I found that NAMI has been accepting something reasonable of analysis for their faulty relationship with drug organizations. I won't state NAMI is shameless or dishonest. That would be excessively simple. On the off chance that Ely Lily offered me a great many dollars, I would need to genuinely think about taking it. Once in a while the choice to go too far relies upon one's genuine needs. Different occasions it simply has to do with making a buck. There is no rejecting that this sort of corporate offense unfavorably influences the mental health framework and fuels the enduring of its shoppers. Once more, I realize a few people need the support of the drug organizations and the mental network. The screening cycle for endorsing these drugs is a major contributor to the issue. That is on the grounds that there is no sufficient cycle set up for administering these possibly perilous medications.
Society itself adds to this useless culture. The overall disposition of people in general is "the length of they are not disturbing us you can do what you please with them." This gives the mental health suppliers considerably greater power to do however they see fit. Thus the mental patient is deprived of their privileges. From my perspective, a mental patient is a person without regard or poise. You can call my words sensational in the event that you like.
It might appear as I am refusing to accept responsibility for the issues at hand and the taking on the casualty job. Permit to explain the function of the patient in the mental health framework (those such as myself). I will be the first to concede that the educated mental patient is the person who is principally liable for their shocking circumstance. We need to acknowledge our function in the framework. Nobody can force you despite your good faith, and state, "Go see a specialist about your uneasiness." At least that is valid by and large. At the point when you consider why you did it, you will say, "It appeared to be a smart thought at that point."
The most noticeably awful thing a mentally sick individual would actually do, is informing somebody concerning their condition. When you do, the other individual glances at you in an unexpected way. A programmed streak goes off in the individual's cerebrum, "Gracious God. Here we go. His ailment is misbehaving." This demeanor is particularly recognizable despite a mental health proficient, your relatives, and dearest companions. It's a general response. From the second you uncover your mystery, all that you do will be accused on your ailment. The manners by which you communicate as a typical individual will be estimated against your alleged issue. On the off chance that you are baffled about something, the individuals throughout your life will finish up, "His drugs aren't working." When individuals figure you can't hear them, they will chatter among themselves, "Goodness he's a psych tolerant. That is the reason he looks fomented. That is essential for his disease." This disposition is very normal. It originates from an absence of comprehension. How could an individual know, except if the person in question has by and by experienced it.
On the off chance that you should endeavor to express your privileges as a person, the mental health supplier will continue to have you focused on a mental emergency clinic without wanting to. The patient can be held for an uncertain timeframe until a clinician chooses the individual has woken up. The mental health experts can basically do anything they desire with you in light of the fact that nobody will take a stand in opposition to them. In Massachusetts, mental patients must hold an exceptionally prepared attorney to speak to them under the watchful eye of a mental health court so as to be delivered. This is the place we are in 2013. I'll wager the greater part of you perusing this article didn't have a clue how our conduct health framework functions. We are still in obscurity ages.
The main time the condition of the mental health framework is uncovered is the point at which a patient ends it all or kills somebody. At that point there is a public commotion and the specialist or advisor are accused or now and again sued. With all due respect, no specialist can control the conduct of their patient in the public arena. That isn't their activity from my perspective. The mental health proficient can't be considered liable for the activities of their patients, except if they were terribly careless somehow or another. We are free and sovereign people. In the United States, individuals are by and large permitted to work uninhibitedly without unnecessary impedance from others. The American disposition is "Nobody has the privilege to instruct me." It's a marginally unique story if the patient expresses that the person plans to end it all or murder somebody. At that point the call to obligation is enacted.

So, I've figured out how you'd obtain Moogle of Glory in the MMO. After clearing Beast's Castle, you'd get a cutscene of Donald and Goofy crashing in Daybreak Town. After seeing this cutscene, if you enter then exit the Moogle Shop Menu. Doing that will trigger the cutscene where the Moogle's Keyblade scheme falls through, and the Keychain attaches itself to your Keyblade. Then you can complete the Moogle 'o Glory quest chain.
PLEASE ANYTHING IS FUCKING BETTER THAN THE MOG QUESTS.
I want to max out Moogle of Glory so bad. I literally need a Power Magic medal after pulling every Foreteller but Gula (and guilting Aced and Invi) but the MoG questline is so bad...and only easy to do in 0 AP. I hate it.
You'd actually obtain the Power Bangle after receiving the "Where's Chirithy?" Quest, upon entering the Fountain Square. You'd then get a Guilting tutorial. You'd get a hint that the Chirithy you were talking to isn't your Chirithy when you speak with your own Chirithy after completing the Guilting Tutorial and they have NO idea where you got the Power Bangle (with some foreshadowing since they have a minor, subtle freakout upon seeing that you have it). So yeah, there's that.
Tbh that foreshadowing should’ve been in the actual KHUx now I’m salt.
The Moogle Shop Menu would have buttons for each shop menu, one for Medals, one for Items, one for Furniture, and one for Spirit parts. There'd also be be a button for selling Medals, and a button for selling Keyblade Materials. The Spirit portion of the shop would have two banners that are always there where you can buy Rainbow parts for the Pupstar and Kitstar, plus the limited time banner for other Spirit Parts.
So, the Spirit would be unlocked through simple means, progress past a certain point in the story (not sure where yet, other than it being before Beast's Castle), then head to Daybreak Town. Cue obtaining the new Pet feature. As for the room? You'd unlock it in a Story Quest, after completing the first three Disney World arcs and returning to Daybreak Town, you would get the key to your room. Why a key when you have a Keyblade? To discourage you from abusing the Keyblade's unlocking powers!
Combining these two into both parts because they’re both pet things. I love the idea of a shop where I could buy the pet parts individually. Perhaps do the banners in the same manner as limited edition shop items, with the rainbow items being available for Munny (because let’s face it when you’re at the point I am in the game where you have quite a few million of it, Munny is useless) and having things worth spending Munny on besides evolving medals to guilt them would be nice.
Also the Daybreak Town thing is adorable and hilarious with the key, and if you ask me you actually should hold off on giving the pet until beating the Keyblade War. I think in the MMO since it’d probably go through KHX and KHUx that it would make most sense to not give the pet until the Union Leaders create it in the Unchained Realm.
So uh, I was thinking of an idea for a SUPER RARE Guilt Medal that's used to roll/reroll traits. While Fusing two of the same Medal would still be the best way to go, these SUPER RARE Medals would be an alternative for Medals you don't have duplicates of. It would cost more Guilt and maybe some Munny to use, however. Additionally, I don't know if it should be Phantom Aqua, DiZ, Robed Ansem, Sora's Heartless, or some other villain from the series. Do you have any ideas?
Hooded Ansem. It should be a character not represented yet but still significantly important and powerful within the series.
So, okay, when the Foreteller Deals arrive, everyone would receive a free Medal corresponding to their Foreteller. Each banner would have the "guaranteed in 5 draws", plus the chance of pulling one of the other 4 Foretellers (and Luxu, whom wouldn't have a banner). Luxu would be another Speed Medal. Sharing any of these Medals would change the music in the Player's room to "Dearly Beloved (Back Cover vers.). Players would be able to borrow Friend Medals for single-player portals.
Nonny you’re speaking my language I wasted over 40k jewels for Ava and granted, I got her, that’s 42k jewels I could still have an be well on my way to saving sixty for that Roxas out right now or the Xion dropping in a few weeks.
Okay, so I'm kinda torn on how I want the "Proud Mode" Keychains to be obtained. One way I was considering was having them be available in the "Item" portion of the Moogle Shop, where you can pull a random Keychain from the pool of the "Keychain" Banner. The other way was having Avatar Boards you unlock as you level up where you unlock them with Avatar Coins. I'm kinda torn between the two of them for obvious reasons
So, I think I figured out how I'd like the whole "Proud Mode" Keyblade thing to work. Basically, what if every Story Battle had a "Proud Mode" or something along those lines? I mean, that's pretty close to how canon does it, but seeing as how I've never beaten the first Shadow of the Proud Mode quests... But yeah, what if the first time you clear choice Story Battles in Hard Mode, you got one of the "Hard Mode" Keyblades?
I mean that’s basically how canon does it, but I think having them pull from a banner might be slightly better than just being avatar coins, so long as one Keyblade is guaranteed, but I think it should be available with Event Coins. We have so many event coins left at the end of every event (mine are in the thousands typically) it’d be nice to have something I can throw all those extra event coins at so they’re not wasted.
I also had an idea for the Organization XIII Medals inspired by the AWFUL "Organization XIII Revival" 1 day event. Basically, on the first day of every month, you'd be able to obtain Xemnas from Event Quests. On the second day, Xigbar, and so on and so forth until the fourteenth where you can get Xion. Shorter timeframe? Yes, but it's much less stressful than "Only thirteen days starting from the thirteenth with only ONE CHANCE ever!" Plus, Roxas and Xion medals from the monthly event!
I’d like that if only so I could guilt Xemnas and Xigbar since I failed to do it both times, but I feel like the event will come around again. This is a rerelease of them from the first time after all. Xion medals from any event are also very good to me. XD (Course I more want Xion’s hair but still)
Getting long so throwing the rest under read more for this group.
So, Anniversary Art #6 would depict Nightmare Chirithy in its boss form front and center with Maleficent and Pete at its right and left respectively and two robed figures standing behind them. Anniversary Art #7 would depict Phantom Chirithy in the Background with Maleficent and Pete standing in front of it, and three masked figures (whom players would later learn to be the brainwashed Union Leaders) standing before them. Both would be Reverse Medals.
NIGHTMARE CHIRITHY ART YES.
So yeah, in Unchained X (three whole years after players witnessed their plush companion freak out over the Power Bangle), we'd get a cutscene explaining why the NEW Union Leaders would allow the Power Bangles since they'd probably have learned what Guilt really is. The idea? Use the Medals to imprison darkness with the Guilting Process, and the Nova Attacks are a sort of exhaust to purge dark energy. Now if only they didn't task the TRAITOR with collecting and containing the purged darkness.
So yeah, the plan with that cycle was to keep the darkness from being able to take tangible form so that the Union Leaders could use the Lux the Dandelions collect to turn their dreams into new worlds, void of darkness. Seeing as the series happened, you can guess how well that turned out. But yeah, Lauriam collects all the Darkness and uses it to create Nightmare versions of the Spirits. Speaking of the Pets, as cool as the bottle animation is, spending Jewels for random parts is just, no.
Putting this under gameplay since guilting is a mechanic, but it does make a surprising amount of sense and explain a lot of the reason why the Union Leaders would actually think it’s okay to allow the Power Bangles and guilt in the Unchained Realm.
As somebody who wasted 3000 jewels just to get a full piggy set because she loves pigs and skipped the bunnies because she needed jewels, fuck yes. Do not charge me for my pigs, I don’t care if it’s cosmetic offer at least basics without premium currency and different unique colors for the jewels.
So, I'd probably make it so that you'd use Munny for more than just Fusing Medals. I'd have it so you have to spend Jewels to purchase Items, Medals, and SOME Avatar Boards, sure, but I'd have it so you spend MUNNY on Decorations (furniture), and MAYBE spend both Guilt and Munny on the random Spirit Parts because Spirits are Dream Eaters and those are made of Darkness (the Union Leaders think that they're turning Darkness into Light when they make Spirits. They're not) so continuity nod there.
YOU’RE LITERALLY TELLING ME THINGS SQUARE SHOULD’VE DONE YOU’RE MAKING THE DREAM KHUX HERE WITH MYNNY FOR DREAM EATERS. (How would you sell Guilt given how the mechanics work?)
So, looks like the "Rainbow" parts were exclusive to the Bunstar instead of being a third color type like I thought. So, no "rainbow" Pupstars and Kitstars in the MMO AU. But I probably would still have a permanent banner of some type in there, be it Chocostars or Frogstars or something. Maybe both? Anyway, the purpose of the Spirit is to eat Nightmares that might emerge from the Guilted Medals, with the ones that raise your Spirit's Rank the most being what Brain deems high-risk.
I think they might exist in JPUx, but who cares, do them anyways, they’d be cute. Also frog dream eaters would gladly have me throwing money at jewel boxes.
So yeah, I was thinking maybe Guilt Prizes would look like the Guilt Symbol, you know what I'm talking about, with each "level" of the symbol corresponding to one point of Guilt. like, Prizes that look like the level 1 symbol would reward 1 Guilt, the level 2 symbol 2 Guilt. The counter would use the Level 7 Guilt Symbol, however. Additionally, Guilt prizes would be inside the bottle in the "Blind Box" Spirit Part purchase animation, until the 3 lights fly in and turn them into a smoke cloud.
Honestly anything that could help with guilt would make anybody more likely to buy those pets blind boxes. XD Only reason I will spend more money on pets is dragon. I got reindeer and fox, that’s good enough.
So, in the MMO AU, the more powerful the attack, the more gauges it will cost. There wouldn't be any 0 SP Medals. As such, Kairi EX's REALLY broken Special Attack would be USELESS in a single player situation, since it would cost 15 SP Guage and only return 5. In Multiplayer, or when using Namine or the Special Attack Guage 2 Skill, on the other hand.
Actually, Illustrated Kairi EX would Coat 10 Guages, restoring 5. Regular Illustrated Kairi would cost 15 Guages and restore 10. They would still have the Canon affects, save for the damage since they would be Team Targeting Medals. Figured that would be more balanced.
Listen I like being broken but anything would be more balanced than what’s currently in the meta with Kairi EX. I actually literally only have my iKairi2 on Treasure Trove just because I don’t have anything better to put there. Actually that’s every Keyblade but Lady Luck now. XD

Bitcoin On-Chain Data Suggests Current Price Range Is a Buy
Recent events surrounding the rapid spread of COVID-19 to nearly every country on Earth and major markets reaction to the phenomena have crypto investors scratching their heads in bewilderment as the sector has never endured a global financial markets meltdown.
The fact that Bitcoin (BTC) was born from a financial crisis but has yet to experience one raises the fear that the asset may perform poorly as traditional markets across the globe crumble.
These fears are clearly weighing on investor sentiment and with the May 2020 halving event fast approaching many are wondering if the long-expected bull market, supposedly a byproduct of the Bitcoin halving, will be negatively impacted by the current downturn in traditional markets.
Crypto market monthly price chart. Source: Coin360
Bullish investors relying on traditional technical analysis to assess Bitcoin’s price action will find the asset’s current performance less than satisfactory and the digital asset’s constant struggle to reach $10,000 is leading some to question whether or not the cryptocurrency will meet investors high expectations with the halving event just 64 days away.
Since 2018 crypto traders looking for an edge have become increasingly interested in how the activity within the Bitcoin network can be analyzed to provide insight into its price action on spot and derivatives markets.
Blockchain analytics firm glassnode recently published a thorough analysis examining how on-chain data allows one to categorize market participants into distinct “meaningful actor groups.”
According to glassnode co-founder Rafael Schultze-Kraft:
“Bitcoin’s UTXO–based system allows for analyses of on-chain data based on the ‘age’ of Bitcoins in the network, i.e. the categorization of Bitcoins depending on the last time they moved.”
Schultze-Kraft further explained that taking a closer look at coin age data allows one to categorize market participants into “meaningful actor groups” and:
“This allows us to obtain a refined understanding of on-chain activity that can be associated to investors that are characterized by different hodling behaviors. In particular, our approach is to break up on-chain activity according to two major industry stakeholders.”
To gain a more detailed understanding of how on-chain data can be valuable to investors, Cointelegraph recently met with glassnode co-founders Rafael Schultze-Kraft and Jan Happel to discuss how on-chain metrics can benefit short and long-term Bitcoin holders.
Cointelegraph: In your recent analysis you said that analyzing Bitcoin’s UTXO data allows one “to assess information on investors’ hodling behavior, and to gauge whether coins that have been dormant for a long time are currently being moved.”
You also mention that close analysis of this data supports the categorization of Short Term Holders (STH) and Long Term Holders (LTC) as two investor types based on coin age.
Furthermore, according to the chart below, on-chain data about the coin age allows researchers to estimate the probability of a UTXO being spent within the next 14 days.
Probability that a UTXO is spent within 14 days based on coin age. Source: glassnode
While this is interesting, we are curious to know what is the value of “knowing” whether or not a Bitcoin will be moved within a certain number of days?
Rafael Schultze-Kraft: The value of knowing is that on-chain movement represents economic activity so if we know the probability of coins moving can be placed within a certain window then one can make some inferences into how this may impact on-chain volume and this represents economic activity within the network.
Jan Happel: From our research, we’ve found that generally the crypto market remains heavily driven by retail investors. Everyone is waiting for the institutions but we don’t believe they are in yet. I don’t expect that to happen within the next 24 months either.
CT: It seems that using the 155 day metric of determining the difference between long and short term holders uncovers the percentage of coins either in the total supply or in the current circulating supply that is held by short term holders and long-term holders. Is this correct?
RSK: Yes, once a UTXO is created, the probability that they will move is very high but older coins have a much lower probability of moving. Now, we can look at UTXO’s younger than 155 days and what the volume is of the circulating supply to determine what percentage is held by short term holders and long term holders.
CT: How does the growth of derivatives markets like Bitcoin futures and high leverage trading offered at major crypto exchanges, Bakkt and CME impact the signal captured by any glassnode metrics?
RSK: It has no impact on on-chain data but what can have an impact on derivatives trading and spot trading is prior on-chain data, which is happening on-chain and entering into an exchange.
Meaning, the flow of funds moving into an exchange can provide a signal on what may happen in the derivative and spot markets. They are two different hemispheres from a data point of view so what is happening in the derivatives market is not influencing the raw data, which comprises our metrics. But what is happening on-chain does provide some insight into what might happen in spot and derivatives markets.
I’ll let my colleague and co-founder Jan speak to this with more clarity.
JH: You can think about the exchanges from an on-chain perspective as a black box, we can see what goes into the box, like the order book, transactions, fund transfers.
We can see that there is a big “readiness” to trade because normally people don’t leave their Bitcoin on exchanges so when we see abnormal transaction activity we can infer that something significant is about to happen in the market.
Derivative data may not be as predictive when it comes to tracking trends but it is complementary and provides important signals for those using on-chain data and those who do not.
CT: Popular trading indicators like the Relative Strength Index, Moving Average Convergence Divergence, and moving averages are lagging indicators that do not reflect the status of an asset in real-time. Are the LTH-SOPR, LTH-MVRV, STH-SOPR, and STH-MVRV active or lagging indicators?
RSK: You can see instances where the indicator functions in both ways, so this is a very complex inquiry. Sometimes the LTH-SOPR, LTH-MVRV, STH-SOPR and STH-MVRV precede price action, and sometimes these metrics function as lagging indicators.
MVRV (blue) and LTH-MVRV (orange). Source: glassnode
Each can react based on investors’ reaction to price in the market and this would be an instance where the indicators lagged price action. Sometimes each can also provide insight into what might happen in the market when on-chain activity precedes what is yet to happen in the market.
CT: The majority of the metrics on glassnode.com have adjustable timeframes, moving averages, and a zoom option for each indicator. Is there a particular default setting that best captures the signal provided by on-chain metrics?
RSK: Not necessarily. We recognize that traders and researchers come from varying backgrounds, so we want as much flexibility and interactivity as possible.
For example, there is a new feature called the compare tool, which allows users to plot various metrics against each other. We encourage users to experiment with each metric in order to develop processes and systems that work best for them.
CT: Exactly how does the STH-MVRV determine when Bitcoin is over and undervalued for short-term periods?
RSK: I wouldn’t always refer to valuation, the STH-MVRV is a signal that allows you to see how MVRV works on short time periods. The MVRV basically shows how the coins are valued today based on today’s (realized) price.
The realized price of Bitcoin’s price is its true value. In very simple terms, it tells us that if STH-MVRV is above 1, Bitcoin is overvalued and investors may consider taking profits or selling.
Short term holder (STH) MVRV. Source: glassnode
The nice thing is that it very very nicely shows how the line at 1, which represents equilibrium and the true underlying value of Bitcoin at that time can be used as an indicator. It really highlights short-term local cycles well and this info can be useful to those interacting with Bitcoin on a shorter time frame.
CT: When evaluating on-chain data provided by the MVRV are the terms overvaluation and undervaluation interpreted in the same way that traders understand the terms overbought and oversold?
RSK: We can use MVRV as a price valuation model, which shows the current market value and realized value. If the current market value is higher than realized value then the asset is overvalued.
Bitcoin MVRV Ratio. Source: glassnode
However, if we look at MVRV over a longer timeframe, we see that 90% of the time Bitcoin price was overvalued. Interestingly, this doesn’t mean that it was overvalued and the value of following the metric over time allows the user to determine on their own whether or not a value of over or under 1 means Bitocin is over or undervalued.
Alternatively, we can see that MVRV, when overvalued, can still be quite far away from a global top so this indicates that there is room for Bitcoin’s price to grow.
It is only overvalued with regard to realized price and investors can evaluate what actions they can take by looking at Bitcoin’s price history to see at what levels did the trend change depending on activity within the spot market.

A Thought On Scrum And Story Plotting
(This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com and Steve's Tumblr.  Find out more at my newsletter.)
As you are painfully aware, unless you have never heard of me, I'm big into applying Agile to creative methods.  Writing nonfiction, however, has eluded me - but I may have had a useful breakthrough.
First, assuming you somehow didn't know anything about me beyond my name, an explainer.  Agile is an approach to projects that emphasizes adaptability, adjustment, communication, and not-overdoing.  It's most common variant is Scrum, which I practice in my career as a Scrum Master - which surprisingly is not a minor He-Man villain, but a kind of process improvement enabler.
Second, if you wonder who I am, I'm obsessed with creative improvements and development.  I kinda write on it a lot - so I like reconciling creativity and Agile.
But as for taking Agile, specifically my beloved Scrum, and applying it to fiction?  I've been challenged.  First, let's take a look at Scrum.
Scrum at its very basics is this:
A backlog of stuff ranked in order of importance - these are called Stories.
One takes a timeframe (called a Sprint), takes a certain amount of stuff from the backlog, and does it.  Sprints are usually the same size, and usually have themes - they produce deliverable results.      You focus just on the Sprint.
At the end of the Sprint, you re-evaluate your work, apply lessons, and do it again.
Scrum sometimes is extended in various ways.  One of my favorites is "Epics" - groups of related Stories.  There are also various scaling methods and so on.
On one level, you can see how Scrum may help a writer.  A story is orderly sets of distinct things - events (organized into scenes).  But writing is also very unpredictable; it's certainly not a simple 2D backlog as things change.  Plotting is challenging as well - with so many arcs, etc. a simple list of "write this in order" doesn't seem to work.
This has troubled me over and over because I like writing, I like Agile, and I'm too hard-headed to give up reconciling writing and Scrum.  I also want to plan my book - but I overplan it and have to back away - something Scrum could help with.
Then it hit me - this can be done.  Here's how - grab some notecards or spreadsheets.
Write down your major story arcs.  There will probably be about 10-30 of them if you go into fine detail (I usually assume each character has 1-3).  These are your "Features" - big bundles of events that are kind of their own tale.  Think of it this way - your story "Features" several story arcs - but I'll call them "Arcs."
In each Arc, write down the main things that need to happen in order.  Remember order - not chronology.  This isn't a timeline of "X happens in Y month," this is a sequence.  In Scrum, these are called "stories," but for the sake of clarity, I'll call them "Events."
Now you have major story Arcs.  In each are major Events that need to happen, which will probably either be scenes or part of a scene.  Now how do you plot this out?
Simple - we use Sprints.  Sprints become Chapters.
Now we have a way through.
Create one Sprint for each Chapter.  If you have no chapters, perhaps pick an arbitrary number (I recommend ten or twenty, easy to get a percent complete).  I'll just call these Chapters.
Take the Arc that spans the entire tale, and sequence out its Events spread among Chapters - take your best shot and when they would happen when.  Make notes as you do so.
Now, take another Arc and do the same - choose one of the larger ones.  As you do this, you may start switching around some Events from your first effort - that's fine.
Next, take one smaller Arc and place out the Events in the various Chapters - it probably won't span the entire set of Chapters, of course.  While you do this, re-sequence the Events - figure what order they happen in.
Finally, just do this for all of your Arcs until, adding and adjusting and rethinking.  Take plenty of notes as well, scenes and inspirations and ideas are going to come to you.  Also, remember, everything should be in the order of occurrence.
Eventually, you have a set of Chapters, containing Events, that fulfill Arcs.
You've just created an outline for your book using Agile - in a kind of mutant Scrum using different terminology, and slightly violating the idea all Sprints are the same duration (hopefully they won't be).
By the way, note how easy it is to switch things around if you change your mind?  Move one event up or down to different Chapters? Yes, very easy - because you have a rough idea of what order things happen in, but you're not locked in - it's all still pieces.
When you write the Chapter, then you can plot out the specific scenes. Take the particular Events, recheck their order, group them in scenes, and go.  Why plot it in fine detail until you're ready?
I used some similar ideas when plotting my current novel - but then overdid it - and as soon as I did, things felt less fun and fluid.  The reason?  I thought too far ahead.  When I "Deplotted" it, it worked much better.  Novel after this one, I'm going to try this system (unless I invent another).
Know where you're going and in what order.  But decide on the specifics when you're ready to write them.  That way, you can react to what has to be done, not have your mind three chapters ahead, and two chapters behind.

Why Kids Can’t Stop Moving: The Neuroscience Behind a Student’s Need to Move
Link to show: www.coolcatteacher.com/e244 Date: February 1, 2018
Vicki: Today we’re talking to Suzanne Cresswell. She’s an occupational therapist and physical therapist. Her expertise is really helping us understand the unique learners in our classrooms.
Now Suzanne, what is a unique learner?
Suzanne: A unique learner is a little bit of all of us, really.
Children and adults have their own way of making sense of the world around them. When we think of learning, we think of the sensory system taking in information visually, auditorily, tactilely.
Each one of us has our own unique way of interpreting that information, but in general, there are patterns of how the brain collects this information.
In our education model, we augment that understanding of the developmental model in teaching incrementally, as the child can develop these skills
But a unique learner tends to be on a little different path. They tend to learn at a different pace.
The emphasis in my book Unique Learner Solutions, is that these students learn differently — not incorrectly, necessarily, but it’s a difficult thing sometimes to capture in our general education classroom, where we’re focus on the curriculum and the standards and meeting certain timeframes.
They tend to learn at a different pace
Certain ideas are needing to be presented to the classroom.
So, the unique learner can be that child that causes the teacher to take a deep breath sometimes, when they think about planning their morning or planning their day, because this is an individual who doesn’t always follow the flow, the rhythm, the timing of the learning that goes on in general in the classroom.
Vicki: So two of my three children have what I call learning differences. I don’t call them disabilities because my children can learn. They just learn differently.
So would you say that someone who has a learning difference is a unique learner, or not always?
Suzanne: No. We’re talking about the same person. Yes, they are the same.
Vicki: These children are learning differently. We realize that. Sometimes they’ll show it by acting.
Sometimes they’ll show it as you look at them and you know they’re trying really, really hard. But they’re just not understanding it.
What do we do? Where do we start?
Where do we start?
Suzanne: I’ll start with the comment about when they’re acting out.
That right there requires a little more inquiry as to what might be motivating the child to act in a way that we would characterize as acting out.
Are they physically moving frequently in their chair?
Are they interrupting and are off-topic?
Are they head on the desk and not interacting type of acting out?
To go beyond that, to take it to the next step and start to look at what might be contributing to that particular “strategy” on the student’s part.
What I’ve learned in working with this population for 30 years — in a medical setting and in a school setting and and sports setting with young athletes — some young people tend to develop strategies even on a subconscious level in order to assist their brain to stay engaged.
We’re hard-wired to learn.
We must take in information.
We must integrate that with past events or memory, and process that in terms of our intellectual understanding in order to take the next step.
This is something that is as necessary as breathing in and breathing out.
So to make that essential process work, for some of these children that have a different way of perceiving information, they come up with strategies.
Some of these children come up with strategies
Some children require a heck of a lot of movement to keep their body going, and I’d like to explain a little bit about that if I might. It goes into big fat neurophysiologic words. But I think that it helps to understand.
Vicki: I know, for example, I have a lot of kids who have ADD or other things. We’ll do planks in our classroom. We’ll stop and say, “OK, we’re going to do push-ups, or maybe planks. I’m going to go for just a minute, just to try to get some of that energy out.”
Is that what you’re talking about?
Suzanne: I want to tell you why you’re doing planks and why that’s working.
But first of all, let me put my hands together and applaud you. That’s fantastic!
So let’s talk about that busy child, a busy one… hyperactive child, ADD. Those are often the students that we’ll see in a general education setting.
They’ve got a good understanding of many of the academic concepts when they are in a situation in which they can demonstrate that to the teacher.
And yet, they are at a little different rhythm than the other students. They’re moving more, or they’re at the end of the answer when you’re still really looking to see how the child solves it and the process.
They are at a little different rhythm than the other students
These types of things are — shall I say — some days it might be upsetting. It offers another avenue for the teacher, and sometimes that’s difficult to integrate, so it ends up being the language that the child is having an upset or an outbreak or what have you.
I totally understand the use of that language. The interesting thing is to look a little bit beyond that. You see that in order to learn is a very developmentally wired process, starting in infancy and moving on.
Let me just quickly take you back:
In infancy, we’re moving out of a buoyant environment inside our mommy’s womb. The first experience we have, the first neurologic thing that our brain understands is the gravitational pull of the earth’s surface. Everything moved from the buoyancy. (laughs)
Moving out of a buoyant environment inside the womb
That’s the very first thing that happens, and the brain connects with that feeling, and then must tell the muscles what to do in order to respond to gravity.
So rather than going — if you don’t mind my saying, kind of — collapse, flat. “OK, that’s gravity, and I need to tell my head and neck and arms basically to do a little bit of a plank if I’m on my tummy so I can lift my head and continue breathing. Ultimately, then move to a source of food and that tactile nurturing.
Well, that right there — feeling gravity and then telling your muscles and joints what to do — is this part of our sensory system.
We have senses — taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing.
But these two senses — feeling gravity (vestibular system) and feeling your muscles and joints respond to your commands (proprioceptive system) — we continue to feed the vestibular and proprioceptive systems.
Vestibular and proprioceptive systems
We continue to feed our sense of feeling gravity operate on our body, feeling our muscles and joints respond optimally to gravity all of our life. But we move it to a part of our brain that we don’t really interact with that much.
That’s why we like walking. That’s why we like exercise. That’s why we like yoga as adults.
These are things that we do. We bring it into our life. It’s in our mind, it’s in our body and our muscles and so forth.
That’s why you’re doing planks for these kids, because you’re stimulating their proprioceptive center and you’re stimulating their vestibular center.
The children that require movement, that are moving in the class at a different rhythm, different rate — and moving at all when the other children are sitting still — this is a child that needs to interact with the vestibular center and the proprioceptive center in order to keep the brain charged for learning.
Understanding that, then we can create a safe way for that child to be able to function in a social classroom environment.
Accommodating those needs
If they need movement, then we provide them with perhaps a seat pan cushion that’s slightly inflated, so that they can move and yet they’re physically within their seat, so they’re not interrupting others.
Some classrooms will obtain the yoga ball, the therapy ball, and find a collar for it so it doesn’t roll anywhere. The student will sit on the ball.
Of course if you’re sitting on a round chair or a round surface your brain is continually interacting with the gravitational pull of the earth’s surface and your body’s ability to respond to those movements. That continually feeds the brain and keeps the brain active for learning.
Vicki: This is so related to flexible seating, isn’t it?
Suzanne: Yes, yes, exactly.
Yeah, it’s very much the same concept, so once we begin to understand that it’s a strategy — we look beyond the erratic behavior, if you will, and look at what that might be cause by — then we can provide solutions for the student.
Then the student is able, in their unique way, to keep their brain and body geared up and continuing to participate in the classroom lessons and the learning that occurs.
But my tendency is to walk into a classroom to see the student I’ve been invited to provide some assistance with, and to look at the child basically as already perfect, if you will.
They are doing the best they can in order to function within their circumstances, and (determine) how successful is that?
Sometimes the way they’re acting is exactly what you want in the gymnasium, but not in the library, and they can’t tell that distinction. So they need to be taught the place for things, and how to be able to identify that.
But why you’re doing planks — that’s putting pressure through the joints of the arms and hands. That pressure is what informs the brain — the proprioceptive center — and overall, that leave the brain with a calming feeling.
When you think planks, when you think movement breaks, even if you think of recess and lunch breaks — that’s all the yoga in the middle of the day if that has meaning for you. Or that’s the taking a walk in the middle of your workday.
That’s what we all need, but children even more need movement infused frequently during their day. Useful movement!
Children even more need movement infused frequently throughout the day
The planks are wonderful. Other movement patterns that help learning readiness are that right brain left brain types of movement as well, where you’re crossing your arms across midline and those types of movement breaks are useful in the classroom all the time.
Vicki: Well, we’ve learned so much today, and the truth is that there is a reason that so many kids can’t stop moving.
There’s nothing wrong with them.
They don’t need to be “fixed.”
They don’t need to be just told to have more control.
I think, as a teacher, that giving brain breaks, giving movement breaks, giving flexible seating — this is all part of being a good teacher. I think that Suzanne has given us a healthy way to view why some our students just can’t stop moving!
Suzanne: That’s true. Yes. Absolutely.
I have information for you on our website, and I have an eBook for your listeners as well that they can access at our website, http://uniquelearnersolutions.com/ebook.
It provides some red flags and it reviews what you and I were just talking about in terms of just scratching below the surface and finding out what’s motivating that behavior that seems so nonproductive.
And the teachers are doing that now. The modern education model embraces movement, a very kinetic model. It’s delightful to see it helping a lot of different learners.
Vicki: It really does make a difference.
I hope that all of us will learn more about all of these different topics and introducing more movement into our classrooms.
