Nkuley Masemola and his iconic creative expressions

Nkuley Masemola is a multidisciplinary creative who works as a fashion model, DJ and stylist. Nkuley Masemola has modelled for iconic South African fashion brands such as Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu and Nao Serati. They also invite the young vibrant youth of Johannesburg to the eccentric scenes of Braamfontein through DJ’ing. With styling that transcends cultural eras and borders, Nkuley translates their experiences of navigating South Africa and the creative culture artistically into their photographs. The success they have garnered since working as a fashion model from the age of 17 is truly inspiring. In this interview we talk about what inspired Nkuley growing up, their artistic journey and the importance of being yourself in order to thrive in the creative industry. 

1. How was it like growing up in Pretoria? 

The funny part is that I didn’t actually grow up in Pretoria, it was more outside of Pretoria than it was Pretoria. I grew up on the outskirts of Pretoria - that’s the farms. Bronkhorstspruit is where I was from. And it was bland - I don’t know any other way to explain it. It was like growing up on a big sheet of white paper. I had to make out myself. It was an experience but it was also really overwhelming because no one there had progressed to anything. It was complicated but also a good learning curve. I always say I would have rather not. I would have rather had a soft life but I guess I see the benefit of growing up like that but it was overwhelming. 

2. What are some unforgettable childhood experiences you believe shaped who you are today? 

When I finally moved to Bronkhorstspruit, after my father passed on, my mom bought herself a huge mirror. I didn’t have friends, I didn’t have anyone. So the only thing I ever did was look into that mirror. I had all my performances there, I had all my interviews, I did everything with that mirror. I just became so self-obsessed, all of my art is self-obsession. Everything is all about me. It’s my self-portrait, it’s music that is about me, everything that is structured in a way that is like self-worship. So I think that particular childhood experience shaped me forever. I got harassed but I never got bullied. I never let anyone bully me. If it happens, I can just avoid it, I’m not gonna stick around. I was always inside the house. I would make up my own stories, live in my head, and wait for the day I move to Jo’burg. When it finally happened, I already had like self-discovered so much. That particular childhood experience shaped who I am today. I created my whole world, and now I’m living in it. 

3. How did you start modelling? 

Back home, there used to be this modelling agency. It was just high school kids who had high-quality cameras, more than it was a modelling agency. They were like, “Yeah you should be a model.” And I was like, “I guess.” It was never my thing. I take really good photos, but I don’t look like a model, I don’t present myself as a model. At that time, I wasn’t the typical male model. And so I was like I’m not a model. That happened and it wasn’t really serious. When I moved to Jo’burg, my friend and I had just come from registering and we were going past Kitcheners and my friend was with their friend. We were all speaking to a guy and he said, “Yeah you can just come back to my place.” We all went back to the place. Then I left my matric certificate at their place and then when I left and went back home, they were like, “You left your stuff here [matric certificate] and also, I saw on Twitter that you might have to drop out of school because you don’t have anywhere to live until March so you can just live with me.” This is the person that I met with a friend because they met on the streets of Braam, literally at the corner of Kitcheners. I lived with that person for 3 months. They literally got me into modelling.

The first day I got here they were like, “You’re a star!”. I was on a music video set, and they needed one guy and I had just moved to Jo’burg and put my bags down. My parents had just dropped me off. I put my bags down and went up to shoot the music video. After that, I had another job. It was quiet for a minute and then my friend asked me to escort them to a casting. Still, I was not in the modelling game, I was just deep in love at the time. So cool, I go to this modelling gig, and then when we get there, my friend doesn’t get picked but they’re choosing from outside. They’re like, “You? Come here.” I said that I’m not here to model what’s happening? They said, “No, just audition quickly.” So I walked and strutted to the wall and then when I came back I got picked. It was The Threaded Man show. After that, everything started picking up, everything just set off. That’s how that happened. I just started modelling after that. Still very weird. 

4. Wow! The Threaded Man was so huge at that time. 

I didn’t even know. I didn’t know who Siya Beyile was. I had just got to Johannesburg. I had no idea who anyone was. So literally getting calls from Rich Mnisi being hey it’s Rich Mnisi. When I found out it was Rich Mnisi I was like OMG! They were shooting for i-D. That is one thing I’ve always dreamt about - I’ve always bought i-D magazines at the taxi ranks. When they said, "You’re 17 you’re gonna shoot for i-D", I was like that’s crazy, that’s crazy. I shot for almost every magazine that I had back at home. In one year, I had Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and i-D. My mom was like, “Aren’t these the magazines that are in your room.?” It was my favourite flex. I didn't even know it’s gonna happen in terms of modelling. I had always imagined being a part of the creative team or like one day when I’m all the way older on the cover of i-D for doing something. But not a whole documentary that is based on us. That’s so crazy, that’s insane. 

4. Which would you say are your favourite fashion collections you have modelled for?

I really enjoyed the Rich Mnisi collections that I modelled for in the first year - I thought I looked really good in zebra print. Thebe Magugu gave me a suit and said “Do what you must with it.” That was really insane for me. Siyababa Atelier’s collection, Rich Mnisi’s collection and Nao Serati’s collection. 

5. The South African creative scene has truly evolved over time, but there’s still so much work to be done. What do you think still needs to be done to move the culture forward? 

I think South Africa needs to stop normalizing things and actually live in them. We need to stop trying to normalize things so much because we are othering them more than we think. We are othering people more than we think. We are regressing more than progressing. If we keep saying “Normalize trans women” - why? They’re women. Women are already normal. You don’t need to normalize women. It’s microaggressions like that. People don’t realize homophobia is just as serious as racism. The same way people are judging you because of your skin colour is the same way you are judging someone for loving someone. I think South Africa would be much better if they just lived in their truth more than trying to be these progressive people. We’ve been through so much, that we should know by now that we can’t risk having another revolution. We’ve revolved too many times. We’ve been traumatized too many times - we don’t need any more trauma. We just need to get that into our heads. We need to let go of the power game. The obsession with power in this country is a hectic obsession - that needs to be let go of. 

6. How do you find the experience of integrating fashion, music and creative direction together to tell a story? 

It comes easily because everything that I do is still self-obsession. Everything that I create is based on me so it’s not that hard. Self-awareness. It’s hard in that term that you know yourself so much that people want to digress you into this way. The only thing hard about it is people not understanding you and wanting to change you and who you are at that point. You already know who you are. Trying to accommodate everyone into your world because I’ve already said I am living in my own world, in my own space. In my own space, there is no need to accommodate other people. I think that’s the hardest part about it. It’s just me finding spaces for people in my world. In terms of navigating it, it’s always been me living out what I wanted to live out. It’s always playing music - when I DJ I play all the music that has registered with me. I’ve always been a Rihanna girl, I’m always going to play Rihanna. I’m always going to have the Rihanna aesthetic - the same way she does it. I’ve been studying Rihanna for the longest time in my life. The same way she does it. The same way she has this creative direction that goes into her music that also goes into her modelling - it’s really insane. That’s what I’ve always done. Rihanna, FKA Twigs, and FAKA do that in the most perfect way ever. That’s my thing. 

7. If you ever feel a creative block during a project, how do you reconnect and channel your energy? 

I like feeling things out. If it doesn’t happen then it’s not gonna happen. I was at a point where I was really depressed last year - I was at my lowest. I had never been that depressed ever in my life before. I told myself that I never want to feel like that ever again. For that to happen, I always have to be honest with myself. I have to know that I can’t do this right now. If I’m gonna go somewhere and I’m like okay you’re gonna have to model today but you don’t have the haircut. You look bad, you’re gonna feel bad and the pictures are going to look bad. So rather, we don’t do it. Rather sacrifice that and put me in a risky position but I’m not going to put something out there that I don’t believe in and don’t feel comfortable with. Being uncomfortable with something that’s seen by so many people is actually kinda crazy. It’s like uploading a picture of your pinky toe that you don’t like. I know people always say embarrassing yourself on the internet is being real, but that is always different for me. My realness is perfection. The real me is the perfect me. 

8. Which creative material inspired you on your overall journey - it could be a book, film, exhibition, art collection - anything really. 

Definitely seeing FAKA. Sitting down, talking to FAKA, and realizing that we have had the same life experiences. When I was 15, when I was a party girl - I still am, FAKA was like, “Oh you host this party called “Umrubisho” and I was like omg we used to host that party and FAKA was like we were always there. It’s so crazy how the Universe aligns like that - that’s insane to me. No one at that point understood what that meant to me but it just means to me my life is fine, I don’t need to worry about a lot of things. Life is just going to progress the way life progresses. I’m just going to get to where I need to get. A moment most pleasing to me was when FAKA was curating a Versace show. That’s so insane. That means anything is possible. That moment for me just sparked up everything. Thebe Magugu winning the LVMH Prize. Rich Mnisi doing Milan Fashion Week. Moments like that for me make anything. Moments like that for me are the most affirming.

9. Which brands and artists would you like to collaborate with in the future? 

I’m not a big fan of Kanye but I really love Yeezy and the direction that it’s taking. As much as I’m working with Adidas, I would love to go deeper into Yeezy like that. Of course, I want to be a FENTY girl so, so, so bad. All the luxury brands - not necessarily as a model but as a muse nonetheless. I would love to be a DIOR girl, I would love to work with YSL but most mostly, I want to be a FENTY girl. 

10. And lastly, which words of advice would you give to artists who aspire to manifest their dreams in this creative industry? 

I would say be yourself. It’s not a joke, really be yourself. Everyone always says this, and it sounds corny all the time but really but it took me at least 2 years to realize, be yourself. Don’t fake it out, be yourself in such a way that even if you are being fake, you’re being fake in a way that is beneficial to you. You’re being fake in a way that is not going to hurt you in the end. You’re doing chaotic things but everything you do must be aligned with you. Everything you do must not come back and bite you. Everything you do must be something that you’ve always wanted to do. Be selfish as much as you can because being selfish just means being yourself and be selfish in ways that will still benefit you. That’s what it has always meant. Just remain yourself because that’s all you’ll have. People will come in and out, but you’re gonna remain with the same person forever - and that’s gonna be you. Take care of yourself, you know what’s good for you, you know what hinders you. You know what you need to do, so just do enough of that to keep yourself going.

And it’s me or Scarab sounds jealous? “Dude, you’re the king of overkill” xD

- “I’m so thankful to have been included.” Helga, you’re a terrible actress... Am I the only one seeing this? Or all the characters are blind? (Except Jeff, he’s a lost case, he’s in love... Actually why he’s in there with his lover?) Or I’m just overanalysing and YJ is leading me in a wrong path?  

- The way Jace insists on the hero part feels like she’s doing this on purpose... 

-Why Tara and Brion feel so bad? It’s not their fault! Or did they tell something to Jace thinking it was an innocent comment? 

- Well, Jace didn’t apologise for the argument she created so maybe she did this on purpose. Or am I overreading this?

- Please don’t mention Wally again :( So basically Paula is afraid Artemis got killed in a mission (like she was for fake and like Wally?) and try to scare her with a wheelchair? “What will it take to covince you?” Yes, she’s totally scared and don’t know what to say anymore as a wheelchair (or any big wound) and Wally’s death don’t seem enough. “You don’t have to fight crime to help people.” This point is good, look at Ed :)

- “You and Will” Uh... no Paula, you got too far and that’s not your busines here... “Your sister isn’t coming back and Lian needs a mother.” Have to disagree... You should be worried for your daughter because it doesn’t seem by free will and Lian already has two female figures. So don’t force your second daughter in a relationship just for pratical things... Thank you no thank you.

- Ed and Bart are the two pathfinders/advance men (not sure of the accurate term) of the Team! :D 

- I’m impressed Scarab uses metric and Jaime still understands it. They use metric in Mexico, right? That could explain why he’s at ease with both systems (unlike me xD).

- The Team is so clever! Virgil makes connexion that Vertigo doesn’t have those powers; Traci makes the link that what they see is at cause and Gar finds a solution :)

- “What are you made of?” “Sugar and spices and everything nice.” He’s a fan of cartoons for this second reference right? And that reminds me of the scene between Bart and the Terror Twins at Mount Justice. Bart, sweetie, stop punching people stronger than you :(

- I thought the guy was powerless (I mean litterarly), how could he resist a bear’s strenght? 

- Uh, that wasn’t Vertigo’s voice. “Be careful my love.” So Vertigo (or whoever this is) is with their minion? Like a boss and his secretary?

- Perdita going straight for the nuts xD Vertigo killed her father? That’s why she was queen at ten :( She should talk with Brion and Tara, they also know an uncle who killed their parents for the throne...

- It was Psimon, make so much sense! I knew I know this voice! Meaning the other is... Devastation! We know theiy’re together since episode 13.

- “He... She was Devastation!” Jaime would never misgender someone! :)

- I love when the girl saves herself but the boyfriend is still worried for her :) 

- “Are you... Come on!” We feel you, Virgil!

- The Team is still so clever to connect the clues. Of course Big Brother Ed is worried for Wend and the others ^^ (He didn’t name any other kids. Is it because he “failed” her and not the others?)

02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness? 

Believe it or not, he used to be real insecure about his looks, especially when he was younger. Before the glo-up (or rather, before his voice broke), he used to get made fun of how his hair made him look like a girl (”Hey Jake, what’s your sister doing here??”) or his lips being compared to a fish. “Johnny Fishy Lips, Fish Lips” etc. (His brother, not so much. They’re twins.) Or honestly, not bearing a lot of ‘white’ features (quote his grandparents on his dad’s side – yikes), or on how brown they’d get during the summer. He never quite understood why adults looked at him and his brother funny when they were with their parents – Noelle being Filipino and his dad is white and… there was some unfortunate-ness to that because they look mostly like their mom and none dad, and it was assumed that his dad got tricked or some shit or insert racist shit. At one point, he asked them if he and his brother were adopted; it’s caused John to be very shy and defensive and even gotten into a few fights because of it.

After the glo-up, it became way less of an insecurity because he’s learned to own up to everything about himself, and he also grew into his features. He still got snide comments about his lips and that he probably wouldn’t be a good kisser because of it. Pffft.

04. What are their favorite traits about their lover? (one psychological and one physical)

John loves how resilient Brian is. He came from a pretty bad family situation and Brian choosing to rise above that and be a better person for it? Amazing! (And then there’s karma and Brian is p e t t y knowing that what goes around, comes around). 

John’s a fan of Brian’s legs. They’re very shapely and John loves to run his fingers the length of them, and just do a lot of things with them.

08. What is, perhaps, their biggest flaw? Are they aware of this or oblivious to it?

His biggest flaw is that he can be really stubborn, and to get him out of that is to frame whatever he’s stubborn about in such a way is to escalate it. I would also say when he gets a strong (negative) emotion, it’s hard to get him out of that state because it overwhelms him. He’s aware of both and he’s working on it; if he has strong feelings about something, he’ll remove himself if he can. 

10. Is your character more feminine or masculine? 

John’s fairly masculine, he’s not like “RAWR I’M A MAN HEAR MY DEEP ASS VOICE AND WATCH ME EAT THE HELL OUT OF THIS STEAK”. Or, he’s not toxic about it. He’s subtle with the way he dresses, anything with a V-neck or schmedium shirts (he swears it’s not intentional, but Brian begs to differ). A lot of people think he’s hella feminine because of his long hair and how he looks in general but, it’s really not the case. He just likes to take care of himself.

11. What is something that would make your character fly into a rage?

If someone threatens Brian or his mom in any way. He’ll probably break bones behind that for real and he can do that real easily.

13. What are your character’s sleeping habits? Heavy or light sleeper? Blanket stealer? One that always rolls onto the floor? Pushes their lover onto the floor? Sleep talker or walker?

70% healthy. He can get anywhere between 6-8 hours on a good night, but since he loves naps, it can get pretty wild. He’s a heavy sleeper so, hardly anything can wake him up. John’s given up on stealing blankets from Brian, even the sheets so he just sticks a foot underneath the burrito and be done with it. He used to sleep walk, but he mostly grew out of it. I say mostly because he would sit up and stare at nothing or Brian for a while, then go back to sleep.

17. Does your character have dreams of getting married and/or having children?

Absolutely @ both of them. He and Brian actually talked about it several times, casual at first and even a joke or two (”omg just marry me” “huh?” “what??)” and then hypotheticals ‘okay so picture this–’  and then, ‘y’know, we’ve been through some tough shit together…’ so, he’s sort of waiting to pop the question.

Fatherhood makes him a little nervous because his dad died when he was young and other than his uncle who stepped in that role (and he’s a little problematic), he doesn’t have any male guidance. He would be the type of dad to read a lot of guidebooks and go to classes (”omg is that supposed to happen???”) or be worried about every single thing.

Fun fact!: At the end of Bare Knuckle, I wanted to do an epilogue/timeskip ending with John telling the whole thing to the kids (they ended up having a boy (the oldest) and twins – a boy and a girl. The twins were a surprise in that they were expecting the girl and come delivery time ‘yeah no you got a boy too’ “WHAT?!” ) and they’re like ‘papa, that’s wild as hell’. 

18. What kind of home would they want to live in? Where would they place this abode?

He’s actually living in it now, lol. The house is medium sized, but the lot is HUGE. It’s right on the water with a private beach. The house has a quiet area/sunroom (which is what he’s wanted in particular anyway), and the yard is really big enough to put just about anything and everything in it. At some point, he’d like a small garden to tend to, a study area for Brian, maybe a pool?

21. What is one of your character’s biggest fears? How would they react when dealing with this fear?

His biggest fear is not being able to live a long life; he wants to be old. Both sides of his family, the men tend to not live that long due to whatever reason. John gets a little anxious when he gets super sick because of what happened to his brother, so he listens to Brian when he tells him he needs to slow down and take meds. As for fighting, he’s less apt to take bigger risks – he puts more thought into it instead of ‘eh, I can take it’.

26. What is their lover like sexually? How do they feel about their lover’s quirks, needs, etc?

John likes to think that Brian is like an onion – he has many layers. Some layers are tougher than others. Sex is really dependant on how Brian feels since his needs is on the low side; foreplay is a requirement but John doesn’t mind because he’s all about spending time and peeling back the proverbial onion layers Brian has. In fact, he’s learned to be patient with Brian. He feels like he could be a little more adventurous, so once in a while he’d ask Brian if he wants to top (even though John can sort of take him) or ask for a ~special~ night where he’s subbing and let him do whatever. It turns out that that’s a major turn on for Brian, and when he’s feeling very touchy-feely, John lets him. Brian has told him that he feels a little selfish that he wants to use John sometimes, and he’s like ‘no, please, go ahead!; if you wanna do some nasty things, I’m down!’ Brian think he isn’t that good, but John is pretty vocal and lets him know he’s doing right.

Brian has became more bold in his advances and demands (turns out he’s pretty bossy lol) and a couple of times, John had to ask for a raincheck (”I am with you in spirit but my dick ain’t having it”) – but that’s what toys are for. In fact, he has a collection and when the drives or work schedules are really off, then that’s always an option. 

Sex isn’t sex but it’s more like the smaller things and how they really feel about each other. And then there are the times Brian wants John to fuck the stress out of him… he’ll do what he can, lol.

29. What is one of the most courageous things your character has ever done for a loved one?

When options to treat Jacob’s cancer were dwindling, John pretty much tried to sacrifice his own body up for anything that needed for him to get better, or at least try to have a better fighting chance. He got the gist of a lot of what was happening, but it really came down to this: “He’s my brother. We’re supposed to protect each other.”

46. What is some random affectionate thing that your character always does to their lover? 

John has a tendency to roll up on Brian, and like does what the cat does sometimes and gently head bunts him and when Brian reacts, he kisses him either on the cheek or forehead and acting like nothing happened OR he waits a bit to read him and see where it goes. Or random kisses. It can get tricky because Brian is a little taller, so he always grabs his head and just *smooch* on his forehead. (He knows that that’s his favorite aside from neck kisses)

48. Is there anything in particular that would ignite your character’s jealousy? Or does your character not get envious?

John’s not really the type to get jealous or anything like that. He likes it when Brian smiles, no matter what the source of it is.

49. What is something that your character has nightmares about? Are these frequent? Do they heavily affect your character’s mood?

John has vivid nightmares either about trying to rescue his brother from whatever and then when he gets within a very short distance, Jacob just dies, or the nightmares about being medicinally tortured, not being able to protect Brian and/or watch him die, or ‘fighting’ and him being greviously injured. They used to be real frequent to the point of being diagnosed with nightmare disorder. Now, they don’t happen so much because he knows all of the triggers and how to avoid them, and if they do happen, he knows none of it is real (even if they do feel like they are).

It fucks him up emotionally every time, and it takes him a while to calm down, from removing himself immediately to just talking it out or even cry about it.

Top 13 Characters I Hate That Everyone Else Likes!

There are many characters we all hate and often times, we’re not the lone strangers when it comes to hating them. There are characters that are practically made to be hated on. Than there are characters in which everyone seems to enjoy but I for one can’t stand and this is it. From number 13 (which is basically grating) to number 1 down right I can’t fathom why anyone likes this character, here are my top list of characters I despise but everyone seems to like.

Rule’s for this list. I’m only listing characters that people really do like for whatever reason. I’m not gonna be listing characters that everyone does hate such as Angelica Pickles from Rugrats. I don’t care for that character either, but I’m pretty sure she was made to get under people’s skin. These are characters that people do enjoy, even if some were meant to be annoying or unlikable. I will be also including anime, western animation, comics and movies (Though these will be from animation, not live action.) and only from media I like. There is no point of putting characters from shows I don’t like.

Warning there will be some mild cussing. I try not to cuss so much in these. These are mainly characters from kid’s media, however, there is one from a comic that is aimed more for older audiences so just a heads up.

As usual if you like these characters, that’s perfectly fine. This is just my opinion and I hold nothing against anyone from liking or even loving these characters. So let’s get started!

13. Jeremy and Angie from Digimon Fusion

I’m gonna be brief with these two as they’re mainly annoying and kinda pointless, than actual hate. These two I just felt very little purpose to the team and shoot, they didn’t even get their own digimon until the near end. That and that horrible dance and singing sequence episode “Rumble in the Jungle Zone”, just made me annoyed at them even more...

12. Meilin from Cardcaptors/Cardcaptor Sakura

Again I just find her mostly pointless than I actually hate her. I would have put Sakura here because of her voice, but that’s because I only dislike Sakura in Japanese because of her voice. I like her as a character.  Meilin is just well...There. That’s it. You could have taken her out and there wouldn’t be much of a difference. I feel like she was just made to prove Syaoran isn’t a complete loner and actually has someone that does like him back home. 

11. Jeri from Digimon Tamers

What can I say about her? She creepily talks through a puppet on her hand, ironically at first acts like the boys are weird for constantly liking Digimon despite she talks through a puppet and of course getting into Digimon despite not wanting to at first. Gets depressed because her Digimon is killed, thus becomes a damsel puppet for the D-Reaper to get stronger and well did I mention she talks creepily through a falking puppet?! I don’t blame her for being depress and obviously, she probably suffers from something like autism and of course, the loss of her mother, but that doesn’t mean I have to like her. I found her again, pointless, creepy and annoying. She just became a thing for the Tamers to rescue when she should have just stayed a side character.

10. Toralei from Monster High

Out of all the characters in Monster High, Toralei has to be the weakest. She doesn’t change or go through any development. All she does is just cause trouble so something can happen within the series or in the movie. She’s self centered and a brat. Least with Cleo, she developed and matured and became more humble. The only change Toralei ever had was that she stopped having lackies around. I guess even they know that Toralei is not worth hanging around. 

They got rid of her in the reboot but just gained a character that’s just like her.

9. Bibury from Kira Kira Precure A La Mode

She’s got a creepy smile and her face always seems off. She’s also annoying and the fact she wants to basically falk a shadow creature thing is just disturbing. I get being down right loyal but it seems she’s got more feelings than being a loyal servant to Mr. Shadow thing...... 

8. Binkie and Steelbeak from Darkwing Duck

Putting both because they’re from the same series. I have another one like this. Let’s start with Binkie.

Binkie is blindly self centered in away. She often acts like her way of doing things is the best way and whenever she tries to help, it just makes things worse. Though, my hatred stems for the fact that Binkie tried to change Gosalyn into something she is not. A dainty little girl and worse, made Drake feel bad for not raising her as a “perfect little lady”. Yes, she basically follows the stereotype of a house wife and believes all young women should be pretty, sweet little things. I don’t mind when girls are sweet and motherly. I don’t approve of forcing people into being something they are not.

Steelbeak I hate because he’s one of the most annoying villains. That laugh and his voice just grate on me, not to mention his smug attitude. I get villains are kinda suppose to be like that, but when you combine that attitude with that voice and laugh....You get the most annoying things on the show next to Binkie!

 The only time I like him is in the comics and the Negaverse fanfics that feature him helping the Friendly Four out, but mainly because I can’t hear his voice and in the fanfictions of course, he’s not as pampas. That and I just didn’t find remotely interesting compared to the rest of Darkwing’s most colorful baddies. He just felt like a bond villain wannabe. 

7. “The Dark Magicians” aka “The Annoying Stooges” from Maho Tsukai Precure!

First off, they dare call themselves “Dark Magicians”. That alone is an insult to Dark Magician from Yugioh, shame on you Toei! 

Second, these guys are the worst villains in recent Precure series! They are incompetent, they can’t do anything right and worse, they’re the reason why Orba, the actual kickass villain died! The better, handsome and more redeemable villain died while these guys got revived and a second chance at life! These guys didn’t do anything remotely redeemable and finally, Sparda (the witch spider there) is a rip off of Arukenimon from Digimon! So she’s not even that original...She does the exact same things as Arukenimon does, just more incompetent!

6. Sailor Neptune and Uranus from Sailor Moon (Old Anime)

They would have been good if they weren’t bitches! Omg! In the manga, they were decent, in fact, I love Haruka/Uranus in the manga and Crystal anime! In the old anime, these two were just intolerable especially near the end of their debut season and Sailor Stars. They turned on Sailor Moon, they turned on their own companions and take their missions way too far.

At least in the manga and Crystal versions, they showed they wanted to be friends with the other sailors and they viewed Sailor Moon as their true princess. They valued the other scouts as equals. 

In the old anime, all that’s thrown out the window. “We’re better than you because we need to make the ultimate sacrifice. Something you kids can’t understand...” Despite the inners and Sailor Moon died like twice saving their world. Where were you two again when the moon kingdom was under attack, you stupid bitches?

5. Yakumo from Shinzo

Normally, I try to avoid hating characters from being weak and not able to fight, because let’s face it. That’s realistic. Especially if they’re motherly and kind, that’s always a spiritual strength to stay humble in the face of those that abuse you.

However, when your path for peace constantly makes you blind and gullible enough to trust others, not realizing what’s going on in your surroundings. Also to the point of scorning your friends for fighting, despite they’re constantly trying to make sure you don’t die on your very important mission for peace, yeah you deserve every single hate coming to you and that is what exactly Yakumo deserves!

All she ever does in the dang series is preach about peace and not realizing she lives in a hostile world where many  will take advantage of her, because supposedly she’s the last human being and they want her dead! There are episodes where she outright abandons her friends, to follow another person whom she just met, if they make her believe she will help them out best or if they convince her they can help her without the use of violence. Not to mention she is constantly a damsel in distress. I get being weak and not being able to fight, but at least learn to be more cautious and smart to avoid getting yourself in danger! Human beings are weak in general but there are ways with using your head to keep you safe.

With Yakumo, she doesn’t seem to have a brain in her head! She constantly gets herself in trouble and everytime she scorns Mushra, I want to slap her and tell her “Bitch, you’re living in a hostile world, everyone here wants to falking kill you! You better be grateful you teamed up with those who want to protect your sorry ass and don’t want to turn you into mince meat, because you’re not gonna bring peace to anyone if you’re dead! But maybe there will be peace when you’re dead because you would shut up!”

I HATED her so much that it was always hard to watch this fairly decent and creative series! I like Shinzo and many of the characters in it, as well as the designs and concepts of the creatures that inhabit in it. However, Yakumo just makes it insufferable so many times! Say what you will about Binka, her little follower but at least Binka, despite blindly following Yakumo, is a rather fun to watch character! Binka’s adventurous and can fend for herself. She can be a bit of brat, but that’s easily understandable for her age. Binka isn’t even a teenager so she’s gonna be a little bit bratty. That’s kids! Yakumo is just obnoxious and what Mushra/Mushrambo or anyone else sees in her, I will never know!

4. Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (Both movies)

No one is annoying as Gaston!

No one is overrated like Gaston!

No one is a disgusting, pompous pig like Gaston! 

You don’t have to be a feminist to see exactly what I mean!

Seriously, I’ve been sexually harassed in real life and this guy, while doesn’t do that, he comes close to it. The new movie makes him worse as he smiles smugly when he is turned down, thinking he can get the woman he wants. (Though, being Emma Watson is playing the lead in the live action film, honestly, he doesn’t know what the hell he’s getting himself into. So quite frankly he deserves her.) He treats women as a trophy and yeah, I get he’s suppose to be unlikable, a lot of people like him as a villain. Quite frankly, you can give me Myotismon or even Julio from Cross Ange. Least even when Julio attacks others with his fleet, he gets his coming in the end and is quite hilarious when things don’t go his way.

That and though the song is fun to parody as, it’s the weakest of the original film’s score. I always mute when his song comes on because I can’t honestly stand it really. Yea, in terms of revelation, Gaston at the time, was a game changer for villains. He was not powerful, not evil until he was pushed enough and it showed that anyone can be like Gaston (ironic to his song). However, that doesn’t stop me from hating him and being mind boggled at why people love this character. I never found him funny, engaging or interesting. He’s just annoying and I’m glad they tossed him to a fitting end!

3. Etemon from Digimon Digital Monsters/Adventure 01

Put two of my most hated things together (Elvis impersonators and monkeys) and you get the most annoying thing to date! He can’t sing, he’s cringy to watch especially in his mega form where he’s naked for some reasons...Why this character is liked is beyond me! There’s a reason why when some people mention good Digimon villain, Etemon is almost never one of them. His arc actually could have been edited to where Datamon was the real mastermind and done less painfully quicker.

When he comes back, there is absolutely no point to him! None! The other Digidestined don’t even face him! He just comes around, gets tortured by the more better Puppetmon and then gets killed by Saberleomon and Zudomon! He does nothing but kill Leomon! That’s it! Well done Bandai! We didn’t need a good character with a killer design in his evolution form! Just give us a metal monkey that can’t sing and is completely pointless!

Whenever the Digimon 1st series did a rerun, I would wait and not watch the episodes of Etemon’s arc. Thank the heavens, we got Myotismon after this guy! He was an improvement, especially since I had feared what Digimon would become after dealing with this weak, annoying pathetic digimon! I was just about to throw in the towel until finally Myotismon shows up and makes things interesting again!

2. Jimmy From Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

Got a question. Why the hell do people like this character!? He’s like Gaston if he was a wuss in the body anyway and Disney somehow allowed him to rape and murder people. That’s basically what Jimmy is and yet, so many fans of JTHM like this character. I have him in my fanfic but guess what? He’s constantly tortured and keeps losing in my fanfic, because he doesn’t deserve anything more than to be tortured and not redeemed for his crimes. 

Not to mention, but it was believed he was made by Jhonen Vasquez (the same dude who did Invader Zim) as away to tell fans that just wanted Johnny to be a mindless killer, to falk off! He is repulsive and deserved what Johnny did to him in the end. 

Yet in spite of that, people somehow still like him in the fandom and some even pair him up with Johnny, who hates him as much as I do. It’s sad because I like Eric, yes, Eric can be pompous too but he didn’t rape and stalk people. He killed one kid with his giant fang but that was played out for laughs and it’s actually unclear if that kid died. Eric is redeemable and can be likable if given proper development. Sadly, Eric gets kicked to the curb where no one seems to know him despite, showing up twice and even making a cameo in a Invader Zim episode, thus making more appearances than Jimmy. Jimmy doesn’t deserve to be redeemed ever and it still mind boggles me that people draw fan art of him, not getting his ass raped by a saw blade! 

Before I get to number one, let me give  quick dishonorable mentions.

1# Ciel/Cure Parfait from Kira Kira Precure A La Mode

Honestly, I hate her Precure design and think she can hit the Mary Sue levels at times, but Ciel as a character is at least humble and kind, so I don’t hate her.

2# Most of the characters of Cross Ange

Left them out because too many to count.

3# Characters from shows I hate such as Spongebob Square Pants, Jimmy Neutron, Fairy Oddparents, Teen Titans Go, CatDog and Adventure Time.

4# Angelica from Rugrats/All Grown Up (Who actually likes this character?)

Now...The number 1 character I hate but everyone else likes is...

1. Diaspro from Winx Club 

Ugh!!!!!! Where do I even begin with this freakin character! She’s like if Angelica grew up, gain powers and actually became a princess. All she ever does in the series is cause problems because she wants Sky! She wants to marry Sky and have him all to herself and you know, it’s clearly for lust and power purposes. Sky is a prince and marrying him, she gets to be queen with a “hot king”. If she actually cared for Sky, she would have just let them be in the series and move on. 

However, she doesn’t. Since season 1, all she does is be some love rival for Bloom. Some people say she deserves Sky more than Bloom. I beg to differ. She’s endangered lives, even the whole dimension just so she can have Sky to herself and it doesn’t matter who she hurts or nearly kills. She should be locked away in the Omega Dimension for her crimes! Not just banished but truly locked away there for all eternity! 

As said she does not care for Sky. She just wants him for power and as a trophy and you know she doesn’t truly love him, because she tries to manipulate him and take advantage over him losing his memories! Someone that truly knows and deserves love wouldn’t do such a thing. 

An excuse is “She’s lonely and might not have a good family” as some fans have speculate. Her family was devastated when they thought she was kidnapped! She’s a spoiled little rich girl! That’s it! And there are plenty of characters that are lonely and can be stuck up but develop more as a character. Stella for instance. Aisha! You got plenty of princesses that have been lonely and yet develop to be better!

Not to mention she doesn’t even try to change. Her last appearance was in season 6. 6 years and not bothering to change at all! Still wanting “her man” instead of growing the hell up and moving on like a grown woman should!

I had heard in the comics she’s quite humble, least not as crazy. I read the comic and that is true she’s not as bad, but still pretty petty and unlikable. Yeah, Bloom gets jealous of her but then she comes to Diaspro’s rescue showing Bloom can put differences a side in the end. Bloom does need to be less jealous and clingy, but at least Bloom’s not trying to kill people for not getting her way. Diaspro out right tries to murder her on several occasions in the show and her pettiness in the comic is just annoying . I get rejection is hard but you gotta move on some time. That’s life!

Not to mention, she is voiced by the ever stuck up, can’t get over herself Ariana Grande for most of the Nick’s seasons. I like Ariana’s singing but she’s like her character. She needs to falking get over herself because she’s got nothing on Celine Dion and Alicia Keys in terms of talent and personality.

Seriously, if you like her, I just don’t get it. Me, I personally would have thrown her in the Vortex of Flames in a heartbeat for what’s she’s done. There’s wanting a man and being spoiled. She takes spoiled and obsession to new heights. Every time I see her on Winx, I change the channel!

And that is why, she is my number one most hated character in animation and shoot, media in general!

Aurora: Story of your first kiss.

All right listen up folks because this is probably gonna be the best story of them all as I’m going to get progressively more tired as this post goes on.  It was a dark and stormy night - actually, it was in the middle of the day, and I was on my first real date.  No, I was not a teenager.  And he couldn’t drive so I’d brought my car to the train station to pick him up before going on.  Anyway so I should point out that this dude was older than me but even less experienced.  Like some painfully shy nerd or something.  Like, I’d never kissed before, but I knew how to kiss, right?

He sure did not know how to kiss.  Like the dude hadn’t even looked at a single youtube tutorial or something.  He was not prepared.  So when the time came to kiss, time kinda slowed down, and I was like, omg, here it comes, me first kiss at last, get ready for the fireworks, here it comes.

And this dude right, this fully grown man, SMASHES his face against mine so that my head slams back against the car seat, LATCHES onto my mouth with his like a vice, our teeth clash and his tongue rams straight down my throat.

So I’m sitting there on the receiving end of this absolutely terrible kiss, this guy’s tongue is waggling wildly against my tonsils, and I just feel so fucking exasperated, like, I feel like in the movie of my life, the camera should have freeze-framed on me at that moment, and a voiceover would’ve come in like “Yep, that’s me there, the girl with the tongue down her throat.  I suppose you’re wondering how I got myself into this situation.  Well…”

I don’t have one so I’m just gonna make up some things now that sound like they would be pretty awesome: 1. Become proficient at astral projection so I can go on spooky adventures in my sleep, 2. Write a book that gets a movie AND video game adaptation, 3. Set up a charity to help women fleeing from domestic abuse in countries where the law is not on their side, 4. Build my own house, 5. Get married and have an owl fly the rings down the aisle because I love owls.  Ok so that started off silly and gradually turned into things that I ACTUALLY want to do.

Ah yes, I remember the last time I fully trusted someone, it was back in 1884, I was but a young potatosaur, I was trapped in the cargo hold of a ship on the way to Newport from Argentina, and the other stowaway was a bearded vagrant who gradually began to starve as the months went by.  I had to trust that man not to peel and eat me in my sleep.  My life was in his hands.

Belle: Is there someone you are close to who no one else likes?

To be honest, years ago I would have had to say yes, but now I’m older and I’ve often found that if nobody likes somebody, there’s a good reason.

Ariel: Where do you think you belong, and why?

Honestly, I have no idea, and just when I think I’ve found somewhere I really belong, as a member of a community or whatever, something always happens to smash it and I have to move on.  So now I try to cultivate my own personal sense of belonging separate from other people, so I belong wherever I am.

Flounder: Something that surprised you and frightened you.

Dump Truck becoming president?  Brexit happening?  The rising tide of racism and intolerance?  The looming threat of nuclear war? Lots of things have surprised and frightened me in the past year.

Well I remember a couple of months ago a lady’s car broke down and her husband wasn’t picking up his phone so I drove her home.  Tons more vague memories come to mind but that one was pretty recent.

Back on that Argentinian sailing ship, I allowed my friend the vagrant to cut a few chips out of me to save his life.  I might have a hole in my side, but my heart is full of the joy of true love.

Probably when I was sitting my Chemistry GCSE, I was never much good at it or so I thought, but I had a teacher who really encouraged me, so I studied hard and got an A!!!  Still very proud of that :]

TOP 10 OTPS

I had a hard time with this, because I have a lot ship and many from them I ship so hard that almost in every series I have more OTP. (okay, I know I should have one OTP/series XD) But I really tried so hard and I finally made my top 10. They’re my currently top 10, of course this can change later and they’re not in order, because I love these ships the most.

1. Hak x Yona (Akatsuki no Yona)

I really loved them from their first scene. My weakness are the couple, who argue a lot, but they know each other really well and they help each other. I especially love how the mangaka build their relationship. Hak loved Yona from their childhood, but he sacrifice everything (even his love) for her happiness. For Yona was Hak always really important, but she need to evolve and deal with lot things and during that realise her love for Hak. They developed step by step and I really love that they don’t need to say anything, they always know, when the other have hard times. It’s really rare to see so well developed ship in a shoujo (of course there are a lot good, but lately hard to find)

��2. Okita Souji x Tominaga Sei (Kaze Hikaru)

(sorry that I don’t paste any gif, but this isn’t animated yet :’D)

Yeah, this is another ship from another shoujo, but this is like Akatsuki no Yona, more than the typical shoujo. This ship made me already a lot feels, because their relationship developed so slow, but this makes their ship more precious, because the mangaka build up really good. Plus more realistic, because Sei live now as a man and she had other goals than the romance. After the first chapter was the whole series really weird for me, but I began to ship them really early and now too. Well, the readers know this will be a tragic ship, but I can’t help, they’re so cute together and really for each other. I wish more people would read this series.

3. Okita Sougo x Kagura (Gintama)

I was troubled here, because I ship them so hard like Gintoki x Tsukuyo, but a little bit I ship them more. I really fond of love-hate relationship and I know they’re not canon and not in love, but they have strong feelings for each other and later I can see romance between them. They have cool, cute, funny scenes, so this is a perfect OTP.

 4. Gajeel x Levy (Fairy Tail)

I was troubled here too, because I love gruvia too, but I love them the most. They began as enemy and Gajeel learned a lot thing from Levy , later Levy from Gajeel too and their relationship turned into a beautiful romance. Not just their relationship, but their character evolved by their love this is why I really love them. While their begin was the worst, I think their relationship is the most awesome now.

5.  Nakajima Atsushi x Izumi Kyouka (Bungou Stray Dogs)

I got into this ship lately and they landed in my top 10. I know they’re still young and just friends, but I totally see that they will be (maybe) a couple. There are a lot hints plus I really love how their relationship evolve. Atsushi saved Kyouka and gave her home and I think it’s good that Atsushi have someone at his side.

6. Raku x Chitoge (Nisekoi)

I don’t need to explain this. They had a chemistry from the start and they show their true self to each other. They get to know each other (good sides and flaws) and this ship turned into an awesome romance. This is relationship goals for sure. I can write an essay about them too, but I try to make this post not too long.

7. Otani Atsushi x Koizumi Risa (Lovely Complex)

I already read this manga a billion times and never get enoug because of them. I really loved how they became from enemies to lovers. And I really love the fact that they’re not the lovey-dovey couple. They have of course cute, romantics scenes, but not sloppy. They still have funny scenes and I really love that they can be together as friends and as lovers too. I mean the most shoujo have sloppy and too lovey-dovey main couple, who don’t know anything about each other just „love” each other.

8. Yukihira Souma x Nakiri Erina (Shokugeki no Souma)

I really love them from the first sight. They’re rivals and interact really rare, but every of their interactions are gold. and I’m glad they interact more lately. I was afraid at the beginning this will be the typical „the hero save the cold-hearted girl”, but I’m glad that not the case and Souma act with Erina like an equal partner, who can fight by her own.

 9. Enmadou Rokuro x Adashi Benio (Sousei no Onmyouji)

I never began to read a manga for a couple, but I began to read the manga/watch the anime because of them. I saw some scenes from them and their chemistry omg. Not so big suprise, but they hate each other, but after they became twin star and need to live together they became so cute. Actually from the first moment. And I really love the fact that they’re totally opposite characters (my second weakness btw xD)

10. Yamuraiha and Sharrkan (Magi)

We can’t see so much scene with them, but their relationship so cute and interesting. I really laugh so hard about their fight/ love quarrel xD I just can hope that we will see them more in Sinbad no Bouken.

Make Believe/It’s Hyper Real (Prologue)

Author’s Notes Part 1: HELLA SPOILERS OMG. If you haven’t beaten/gotten very far in the game, then don’t look here! More author’s notes and the actual Prologue under the read more! :)

Author’s Notes Part 2: Some lines from the game itself are placed into the first chapter so that I can use them for my own purposes. Also, Bahamut is difficult af to characterize omg. Also basically, throughout the game you have many opportunities for a Game Over, screen, right? Well, what if the Six knew that if left on his own Noctis WOULD end up dying before fulfilling his destiny? So they decided to send someone in to prevent that from happening. And that’s where the Heart of the Crystal pops in! :D

If they get to muck up their Latin, then so do I! And maybe mix it with French, oops!

The TV shows always got this part wrong. The machines didn’t constantly beep, in fact they were generally quieter than the breeze outside. They only started beeping when she fell into a deep sleep and her heart rate dropped too low. By this point, the nurses had stopped rushing in the moment it went off- the noise the machine would make would rouse her and trigger her heart rate to rise again and so the monitor would go quiet once more, allowing her to slip back into an admittedly lighter sleep. The only times her pulse didn’t get quickly sorted was during the episodes. At those times when her heart would pause for agonizingly long seconds then multiple nurses would rush in, dragging the crash cart behind them just in case this time was the time.

She had a surgery scheduled for the following evening. The surgery itself didn’t worry her- she was well aware of the risks and chances it created- but she wasn’t looking forward to going without food for the day leading up to it nor the loosening of her tongue the anesthesia and pain medicine would cause. She didn’t necessarily have anything to keep hidden, but she hated the idea of not being in control of the words that left her lips. She wondered how hard she’d need to concentrate to keep herself quiet.

It was very clear that she wouldn’t be getting much sleep tonight, so rather than staying bored and lost in her thoughts, she reached for the game controller, powering up the console and then turning on the television. She’d been incredibly thankful that the hospital had allowed her to bring her games into the room- though it might have been their way of keeping her in her room and in bed, she still technically qualified as a fall risk. The newest Final Fantasy game hadn’t been out for long, but she’d already beaten it and was currently trying to 100% it.

An hour or so passed like this, a small smile on chapped lips as she focused on completing hunts and sidequests. However, she felt it starting. It was always such a slow-fast-slithering occurrence. The slight dizziness- did I turn my head too fast? That turned into- I’m going to fall. She set the controller down and shoved the bedside table away from her as the nausea rose and rolled and twisted within her. She leaned back against the bed, struggling to smooth her breathing even as each gasp was too-little-not-enough. Shaking hands reached for a vomit bag, releasing the contents of her stomach. The black started immediately after, though, and as she lost consciousness, the bag dropped.

There was that ringing silence for a long time. She was in that void. Not quite awake but somewhat aware of her body. Her chest hurt- a lot, actually. It felt like her ribs were broken and as she considered that, she felt a sudden, sharp burning that spread from her chest through the rest of of her torso and arms. She wince- or would have, if she’d been capable of moving. The pain continued, but she faded once more.

Then there was a new void. It was blue- no, it was a multitude of colors, almost like a galaxy. So she was probably dead. In all her years of experiencing these episodes, she’d never once hallucinated being in a galaxy, even considering how much she loved the night sky. She blinked, looking around, but she’d barely moved her head when a loud voice reverberated all around her. “The fate of this world falls to the King of Kings. His Providence consecrated in the divine Light of the Crystal. So it is ordained- the revelation of Bahamut.” As the voice spoke, she found herself mouthing the words along with it.

Those words, and that voice were all too familiar. She looked up, and there in the flesh- or metal- was the Astral himself. She found herself at a lack of words. What was there to say? What kind of weird coma-dream or afterlife was this? People didn’t get sent into the worlds of video games. It just didn’t happen. ‘Where am I?’

Bahamut didn’t seem to care about her confusion, though, and continued on. “The Heart of the Crystal, wherein lies the soul of the star.” She shook her head, this was not possible. She was just a sick girl, she was not the one who should be getting this speech. A video game character should be the one hearing the Astral talk. “Your Earthborn body is dying. In moments, the time of death will be declared.” Well, yes, she’d guessed that. “You may live again as the Heart of the Crystal, guiding the True King to his destiny.”

“I don’t… what are you talking about?”

“If you leave this place and return to your Earthborn self, you will still die. There is nothing left for you in that place. If you make a pact, you will be given an Eosborn self, and will have the entirety of the life to live.”

“What pact?”

“Become the Heart of the Crystal. You will live again, but you must guide the True King to his destiny. Show him the steps he needs to take to bring Light back into Eos.” Despite Bahamut’s refusal to state his intentions clearly, she could infer that he intended to send her to be something of an advisor for Noctis. He also wasn’t wrong- she’d been well aware of her own mortality for her entire life and though she’d accepted it long ago she was still saddened that there had been many things that she had been unable to experience- too ill to exert herself.

“You’re still sending him off to die? You want me to help raise him up like a cow to lead to slaughter?”

“Many sacrificed all for the King, so the King must-”

“Sacrifice himself for all, yes, I’ve heard this.” She couldn’t explain her sudden frustration, “He’s just a boy, Chosen King or not- why would you do this to him? This was never his mess to clean up.” She sensed the Astral’s anger that she’d question him so insolently, but truthfully, she had nothing to lose. She was already dead, after all.

“You have the opportunity to save a world. Earth is finished with you. Eos needs you.”

She sighed. This entire situation was ridiculous. There was a part of her that was certain that this was all just a coma dream, or some messed up variation of ‘seeing your life flash before your eyes.’

Bahamut apparently decided on a different approach. “The darkness has defeated you this time. You now have the chance to stop it from defeating Eos.” For some reason, those words struck a chord in her, and she gazed thoughtfully up at the Astral.

“Alright,” she stated, “I will make the Pact.”

She spent some time in that void- the Crystal, she corrected herself, as Bahamut explained what it was she needed to do and the new abilities she would gain. Truthfully, the abilities were little more than ‘you’ve already played the game so you know what’s going to happen’ with the added bonus of ‘also, should Noctis or his father pass it over, you could use their magic.’ Even as she and Bahamut built up their plan, she secretly intended to do everything in her power to keep Noctis alive. It just wasn’t fair, that he’d have to die so young after such a difficult life. Eventually, she knew exactly what it was she needed to do and exactly what steps to take.

Just four months after the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Noctis, the Crystal pulsed before King Regis’ eyes. A stream of Light split off from it, shooting directly into a hospital. The King himself visited the hospital, determined to discover what exactly the Light had been only to find that it lead to a newborn.

And so it was that Lady Felicitas of House Beaulieu was born.
