Meet Townsville drag king Heywood Jablowme
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/meet-townsville-drag-king-heywood-jablowme/
Meet Townsville drag king Heywood Jablowme
We ask local entertainers to spill the tea about themselves, their craft and the local scene. This month itâs Townsvilleâs drag king Heywood Jablowme. Â
Heywood chats to us about their career, life in Townsville and how their partner proposed to them.
I would describe Heywood Jablome asâŚ.
A chunky yet funky guy who loves to dance. With my glitter beard and smooth moves, Iâll catch your attention, then Iâll catch your heart with a wink and a smile. Always ready for a dance and a good time, Iâm just here to entertain myself and I know you will be too. Letâs dance!
The first time I did drag wasâŚ
A very long time ago (about 20 or so years ago) for a drag king competition for first-timers. I didnât win, but I had so much fun and got such a great crowd response, that I just kept performing.
The Townsville/North Queensland scene isâŚ
A bit like me⌠small but mighty!
My best skills as a performer areâŚ
Getting the crowd pumped up and making peeps feel things they never knew they could!

Drag kings
Compared to drag queens, drag kings areâŚ
Often overlooked
The biggest myth about drag kings isâŚ
Theyâre not as good as drag queens. Weâre all just here to perform, entertain and have fun! Give drag kings a chance
The most important skill you can have as a drag king isâŚ
Knowing the fine line between being flirty and being sleazy and knowing how to stay on the right side of it. Flirty = cute, sleazy = creepy.
Gender isâŚ
Fluid and a very broad spectrum. Be respectful and refer to people in the way theyâve asked, itâs not going to hurt you, but it will mean the world to them.
Being a parent and a performer isâŚ
Sometimes challenging, but our kids love seeing me in drag.
Performance experiences
The best thing a fan has done for me wasâŚ
Propose, ha!
The worst thing someone in the audience has done was...
Try to grab my crotch. Thatâs a big no-no. Never touch somebody without their consent. Costume does not equal consent.
The best experience Iâve had performing isâŚ
A tough one to choose. At Queer Candy 2023 I did Amen by Todrick Hall, which went off with the crowd, and my partner proposed to me with a poster that said âHeywood JaMarryMeâ and I said yes.
Then at this yearâs Queer Candy, the one and only Kween Kong called me her husband on stage after watching me perform, so that was pretty incredible too.
A performer who deserves more attention isâŚ
Hugo Grrrl, an amazing NZ drag king and Sydney king Sexy Galexy.
Something people are surprised to learn about me isâŚ
I can be a real homebody at times, gotta recharge those batteries.

The future
In 2024 I hopeâŚÂ
To let Heywood out to play more.
A message I have for the community isâŚ
To be kind to one another. We are a small community, we need to practice what we preach and be truly accepting of all, embrace and support each other. Weâre all just queerdos trying to survive in this mad world.

WHO ARE YOU?
whatâs your star sign? "A gemini!"

what colour are your eyes? "Dark brown, but it's freakishly close to being black."
if i went on to your spotify right now, your most played song would be what? "HIP by Mamamoo."
do you read much? "Not really. I did have a phase when I was younger and read all the popular dystopian books like The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, etc."
where did you grow up? "I grew up in Seoul, but my family travelled a lot so I only really spent a small majority of my life there."
when it comes to siblings; are you oldest, middle, youngest or only child? "I'm the youngest."
what were you like in high school? "I was a very bubbly student. I wouldn't consider myself popular but I was very well known for being the captain of the dance team at our high school."
if you could be any magical creature, what would you be? "A dragon! Mostly because I've seen a lot of people compare my appearance to Light Fury from How to Train your Dragon 3, but regardless I think it'd be pretty cool."

Each of the members are going to have a role in the production of our group, like styling, songwriting, producing, etc. I'm the choreographer of the group, but I'm also going to assist in music production as well."
if you werenât at a talent academy, what occupation would you be working towards? "I think I'd be a dance teacher, or maybe a producer with the help of my dad instead of a talent academy. He went through it all as a Blossom Bell and St Judes student, so I'd probably get the same tips they'd give me through him. Loopholes."
are you a âwork hard, play hardâ or a âwork hard, sleep hardâ type? "Work hard, Play Hard."
whatâs your proudest moment in your career so far? "There isn't one moment specifically, but just getting on stage and showing people my choreographies has been such a good experience."
do you remember where you were when you realised you were accepted into your academy? "I was in the studio with my dad and my brothers. Minhyuck and I got the letter around the same time."
did you get rejected from any academies? do you care anymore? "I did apply for Liberty as a second preference and got rejected. I'm not upset about it though."
what is your DREAM achievement? "To become a well known dancer and choreographer. I'd love to work for big names in the industry."

whoâs the most annoying person on tour? "Minhyuck."
which person on tour would you NOT let your hypothetical son or daughter date? "Minhyuck, for very obvious reasons."

what is one country you have no desire to visit that other people do? "Australia. Me and heat don't mix well."
if you could rename yourself, what would your name now be? "Technically I've already renamed myself Georgie -not really though because it's just the English version of my actual name, Joji- but I generally like names that end in the -ee sound. So maybe like Lucy or Maisie.. Something like that."
if these were your famous last words, what would you say? "Minhyuck did it."

At this point Iâm compelled to think that dacre during PR era was just for the movie and being the super hero role model for kids. He had to interact with fans to promote the movie and may have been a little more humble. But the good boy image was probably for the movie. Now that heâs seen as the sex symbol for ST hes being himself with a little bit of ego added. But for the most part he may have always been like this. Itâs wild to think fame would change him that much and so fast. If so..yikes
I think that the wide-eyed innocencewe saw during PR was probably genuine. I agree that the foundation of the Dacrethat we are seeing now has probably always been there, but he was right out ofdrama school during PR and was finally seeing all his hard work come tofruition. I think he was genuinely stoked and grateful. What I think triggereda change was getting Stranger Things right after Power Rangers, and thengetting all the attention after ST2, not just from fans, but also from peoplewithin the industry. All of the sudden heâs getting invited to everything andworking with stylists who are dressing him in expensive high-end clothes. Thenhe gets back to Perth and everyone is worshipping the ground he walks on,including the girls who wouldnât have spit on him if he was on fire back inhigh school because heâs the boy from Perth who made it in Hollywood. And BOOM,we have this messy ânewâ Dacre. My very personal opinion is that he feels heâsfinally getting the recognition and treatment that he deserves. And well, goodfor him. I canât be bothered to get in my feelings about it anymore.
Anonymous said: I think another issue with thedryness in Dacreâs tag is he hasnât been in the business that long. Othercelebs have interviews from 5 years ago, etc that people can watch. Dacre onlyhas recent interviews that a more still on peopleâs minds so people get boredeasily. Compared to somebody who has a large collection of press, TV, andmovies.
I donât disagree with this. Heâsonly done two projects, and anything there is to see or hear about him has alreadybeen seen or heard. But I think that is what makes his long silencesso deafening. There are only so many old interviews and pictures you can watchor look at before thereâs nothing else to do. So yeah, you are right.
Anonymous said: I feel like Dacre really bought intothe idea of being the next Leo Dicaprio or something. Dating models and allthat, thought to Leoâs credit he seems to have stayed away from drugs. I hopeitâs all worth it for him in the end as itâs become very off putting as oflate.
The difference between Dacre and LeoDicaprio is that Leo paid his dues and had a resume before he started partyingwith models on yachts. Thatâs what makes what Dacre is perceived to be doing sograting. Like, dude has done one movie and one TV show. Calm down. Youâre notthere yet. Or at least make sure you arenât being exposed by hangers-on who aregiddy at posting all your personal business on their Instagrams.
Anonymous said: Joe isnât as obvious as Dacre andobvs has more diverse talent than just acting but heâs out there at hollywoodâfree swagâ parties and conventions working the hollywood game andlooking a hot mess. He may be more lowkey with his drinking and drug use. Ialso would not call his relationship lowkey (in comparison to Dacreâs sure) buthe âupgradedâ to a more famous and hollywood suited gf as soon as hefound fame and she looks very comfortable being his arm candy and going to allthose parties.
Iâve seen this argument a lot comingout of the Joe fandom, and it mostly revolves around his girlfriend and how he âupgradedâon his ex. I donât know what his ex looks like and I donât think Maika Monroeis all that pretty (she looks average to me), so I canât tell if he upgraded. WhatI will say is that it seems thatâs all people can come up with to drag Joe for.I havenât really seen anything else coming out about him that people can be madat. So, if the only thing people have beef with is him supposedly âupgrading,âthen heâs doing pretty damn good in my book.
Anonymous said: You said everything Iâve beenthinking about Dacre and his mess. I also completely agree with what you saidabout Joe having a full life outside of the fame and not having changed due tohis fame. I respect him a lot and will continue to be a fan. He seems so kindand mellow and seems to realize thereâs more to life than fame and acting. Goodfor him. Dacre could learn a thing or two.
I going to take this opportunity tosay that I donât want this to become about pitting Joe and Dacre against eachother. I personally donât think thatâs a necessary thing to do. You can be madat Dacreâs messiness without dragging Joe into it. This is no shade at you, anon.I agree with what youâre saying. I just donât want Joe fans to start draggingDacre to prop up Joe or vice versa. Dacre has done enough to be dragged on hisown without equating him to Joe because thatâs just not a fair comparison. Â
Anonymous said: i had a dream last night that Dacreposted a video of himself basically apologizing for all of the stuff about himrecently like saying Iâm sorry that youâre getting this image of me, I take myimage really seriously and will be trying to get ahold of it all from now on,etc hahahaha i wish this dream was real. He is being so sloppy with all of thisstuff coming out ffs
Yeah, thatâs definitely a dream. Ican say with confidence that he will never do that. I think he thinks there is noproblem. And there may not be one to be honest. Just because you, or I, or otherpeople feel some kind of way about the image heâs projecting, or is allowing tobe projected by other peopleâs messiness, doesnât mean he or his people feellike there is anything wrong. So, yeah, I doubt we are going to see any kind ofchange.
Anonymous said: Thatâs definitely coke. I used to doit back in high school and you often hold your nose up to let the coke slidedown also my white boy Chris Evans used to do coke now heâs an Avenger.
I had no idea Chris Evan used to docoke. Iâve said before that I donât think any of this is going to have alasting effect on Dacreâs career, so I canât say that youâre wrong.
Anonymous said: None of those girls on the boat looklike models đđ apart from liv I guess but youcanât even see her
I actually think those girls are herfriends from high school. Apparently, she was a part of what looked like a richgirl/mean girl clique (although I donât think she had as much money as her friends) and sheâs still friends with them, which makes sense becausesheâs only really been out of high school for about a year. Also, I donât thinkit takes much to call yourself a model in Australia. It looks like there are alot of teen girls who do some âmodelingâ for dress shops during prom season orwhatever and then suddenly they are calling themselves professional âmodels.â
Anonymous said: His friend Robbi looked like he wasquite worried about him in the video. I think that kind of gives away that whathe was doing might not have been innocent
It did look like he was looking inthe cabin wondering what exactly was going on, but we canât really speculateabout what people are thinking from an instastory thatâs a few seconds long. But I can see how youâd see that. Â
Anonymous said: The friends of this chick begin toput their IG in private, I find it suspicious a little
Another anon told me that the JosieGarza chick put her Instagram on private. I wonder if it has something to dowith the anon who pointed out that on the infamous birthday pic that may havegotten that fan account banned, she refers to the IG Model as âher black bffâ implyingthat she is black or part black. They included the Insta handle in their ask soIâm sure people went looking. That ask peaked my interest because a while backI speculated that the IG Model may be bi or multi-racial. I wonder if people straightup asked her if the IG model was black and thatâs why she went private.
Anonymous said: any news on that sag tea? did theyauthorize you to tell us?
I took a break from the fandom, so Ihavenât talked to them about it recently. The tea is pretty old at this pointand not really all that relevant anymore. And back when I gave a shit, I washesitant to push spilling it because I didnât want to put anything out therethat would make Dacre look bad, but now that I donât care, I may ask again.

17. Whenâs the last time you had a phone conversation for more than ten minutes? Does a voice call on google hangout count? If yes, then today with Maggie and Patrick while we played The Elder Scrolls
18. All the people youâve kissed, what did their names start with? God, Iâll just list the letters in alphabetical I guess: A, B, C, D, E, I, J, M, N, R, Z Most of those letters are multiple people though. Surprisingly there are two Zâs and neither of them are a name you expect.

42. Have you ever called in and won a radio contest, and, if so, what was it, and whatâd you win? No but this reminds me that when I was a kid I won an easter colouring competition and my prize was a 3kg chocolate bunny which my dad smashed up with a hammer and put all the pieces in a cooler and then most of it was eaten by him and my brother. Like, I eat a ton of vegetables every day and drink mostly water, milk and orange juice. And I started eating eggs for some protein too.
72. Whoâs the weirdest teacher at your school? There was a teacher at my highschool called (I think) Mr. Moore. He was always powerwalking and/or spilling his coffee. 84. Your most recent ex needs you at 3 AM, do you go? Depends what he needs me for, but probably 85. Would you rather kiss someone 5 years older or 5 year younger? 5 years older. Five younger is like 18 and hell nah Iâm not going to kiss an 18yo kid.

The Oxford Incident -- First Chapter Teaser (Original Fic)
I canât believe Iâm doing this... Anyway, here it goes the first chapter of the steampunk ya  Iâm working on at this retreat:Â
âThis may be the dumbest thing weâve ever done,â Jessa said as she stared at the imposing white stone facade of Majors and Sons, Mayfairâs finest jewelers and the Queenâs favorite place to acquire her shine.Â
She tugged on the bottom of her brown braid, making sure it was secure. The last thing she needed was for her hair to come lose in the middle of cracking a safe and getting in her way. She could see it play out in her mind. There she is, crouched in front of the safe, ear trumpet pressed against the door, clicking through the dials and her hair gets in her eyes. And thatâs when the Metropolitan Peelers crash in and catch her in act of pinching the storeâs newest acquisition of diamonds and sapphires.
Theyâd hang her before breakfast sure as Queen Vicky had a perfumed chamber pot.
âThis is a brilliant plan,â her partner â Archieâ said and then rolled his eyes at her. âThe best plan Iâve ever come up with.â
âThatâs not saying much,â Jessa said and fought the urge to roll her eyes.
They were going to get caught. She knew it.
âYou just follow my lead across the street,â Archie said, giving her his sternest stare, âand then shimmy yourself up that drain pipe and come back down with the goods and then Bobâs your uncle, Fannyâs your aunt and in under ten minutes weâll have the haul that Nell Plankerâs been dying to get her thieving red fingers on. And then? Itâs easy street for us. One way tickets to Australia and youâll be wrangling those giant rabbits by dinner time.âÂ
âAnd if anyone suspicious comes by? Anyone who suddenly thinks they need to be in that shop for some reason?â
Archie twitched his shabby brown coat backwards and Jessa could see the club he always carried. The length of her arm from wrist to the tip of her middle finger, as thick as her wrist, it was made of solid wood, polished to a gleam. It wasnât a big weapon but she knew from experience that when Archie put his considerable enthusiasm for mayhem behind it he could make the weapon an effective deterrent for anyone who thought to keep the two of them from their target.
âRight.â Jessa pulled on the dirty gray cap that sheâd stolen off a drunk lamp lighter and tucker her braid up underneath it before glancing over at Archie.
Heâd donned his own cap and had opened a glass bottle. Archie took a quick nip off the bottle and then splashed another dose onto his own coat. âHere.â He passed her the bottle. âIf weâre playing at being drunken sots, weâre going to have to smell like it.â
The acrid smell of aether laced gin assaulted her nostrils and Jessa fought the urge to gag. Aether gin had taken over as the ruin of choice in Whitechapel and sheâd seen plenty of dead in the early morning, unfortunates whoâd thought the new drink would keep them warmer than a roof and walls would and froze to death in the biting London winters instead, their lips blue and their chest rattling from the particles that had turned their lungs to metal as they lay passed out in the gutters. âRight.â She spilled some of the clear liquid onto her own, soot covered, coat then took a small sip, wrinkling her nose at the way the alcohol burned on its way down her gullet.
Archie picked up the long torch they were supposed to be using to light the lamps, and rubbed a hand along the ashes collected in the thick wick. He rubbed some on his own face and then brought his hand up to Jessaâs cheeks, brushing them gently.
âThere now,â His voice sounded rough. âWeâll make you a bit less of a pretty boy. Otherwise you might stick out in somebodyâs mind. The too pretty lamp boy hanging around in Mayfair.â He fit the snuffer â the small cap that the real lamp boys would use to douse the lamps at dawnâ onto the torch and then leaned on his left foot, resting his weight against the long length of the pole.
Jessa glanced over and fought the urge to rub at the cheek heâd brushed his fingers down. âShut up Archie,â she muttered, trying to ignore the fact that a simple touch that she wouldnât have noticed three months ago suddenly made her heart beat a little faster. Then again, it seemed to her that three months ago, Archie was much less likely to find excuses to run his fingers gently down her cheek. Or mention more about her appearance than whether or not sheâd gotten a tear or a smear somewhere that she hadnât already noticed.
Now though, it seemed Archie was always mentioning her hair or her eyes. Telling her he thought she looked too noticable in green. Throwing glares at the other young men around Whitechapel when they suggested she partner with them for some mayhem or a bit of burglary. Last week heâd threatened to break Edgar Whitmanâs jaw if he didnât leave off buying Jessa gins that she kept refusing to drink.
It was almost like Archie was trying to act like he was her man, courting her in his own street rat sort of way. And if the way her pulse raced every time he did something foolish and charming was any indication then Jessa was afraid that perhaps sheâd grown a little too fond of the other thief. Maybe her brother-in-mischief was becomingâŚ
She pulled away from that thought and shook her head violently from side to side, hard enough that she thought she could make the thought slosh completely free of her brain. The last thing she needed was to start mooning after some boy like a silly society twit with fluffy skirts and too tight corsets and more money than sense. She had no time to worry about dresses and curls and sweet smelling perfume. She had three sisters at home, each of them with a belly to fill and a doctor who demanded payment up front to give her sister Philodendron the medicine that allowed her to breathe.
Plus, Archie was her partner. Theyâd been working Londonâs streets as a team since sheâd been eleven years old, newly orphaned with three younger sisters to care for, determined not to let the charity people pull them into one of their homes to be sold out as labor for the factories that had killed their parents. But Archie was more than just her partner. Heâd been her first friend in Whitechapel. The one whoâd brought her into the gang of street urchins and pick pockets that had given her and her sisters a home. She wasnât about to complicate that with sweet words and kisses in dark alleys.
âLetâs get this done,â she said, glancing first left and then right, before linking her arm through Archieâs much more muscled one and lurched against him.
âOh pretty Peggy,â Archie began to sing, slurring the words in his fine Irish tenor. âShe was my queen. Iâd spend all my coppers just to listen to her sing.â They stumbled across the street, lurching one way and then the next. âOh pretty Peggy, sheâd dance and sing. When the punters would throw their coins, then sheâd show her knees.â Archie took a loud breath as they reached the other side of the road. âOh pretty Peggy, my pretty pretty Queen. But Iâm a poor man, with a skin full of gin, and my pretty Peggy she wonât let me in.âÂ
Jessa waited until he was in position, his body blocking the entrance to the alley, singing loudly about all the things Peggy the barmaid wouldnât let her suitors do, and then hurried further into the alley. There, just above a set of metal bins, was her way in. One window with nothing much to look out at besides the sooty bricks of the building next to it. She reached into her jacket for the coiled up length of rope she kept there, a claw hammerâs head tied to the end. It was one of her sister Delphiniumâs gadgets, something sheâd gotten the idea for out of one of the adventure magazines she sometimes read between bowing and scraping to customers in the automata store where she worked the counter.
Jessa uncoiled the rope enough to swing it in a circle, the weighted hammer head causing it to pick up speed. Then, just as the air started to whistle from the ropeâs speed, she released, throwing the iron head towards the window ledge. The glass shattered and Archie raised his voice to cover the tinkle of glass as it rained down on the alley. She was getting better at hitting the glass and breaking it but she wasnât nearly as good as Delphi expected her to be. Then again, her sister didnât actually have to use the gadgets she created.
She pulled on a pair of thick gloves and then gave a sharp tug on the rope. The head had caught fast on the other side of the window and she was certain it would hold her weight.
Well pretty certain. Possibly a little bit better than half a chance that it would hold her weight.
She tugged on the rope again, harder this time. She hoped it would hold her weight.
She put her right foot against the brick wall and prepared toâ
Gaslights flared to life along the roof of Majorâs and Sons, bathing the alley in gaslight. Loud ringing, the sound of a thousand angry bees woken to find that their honey was under attack, began to pour from the broken window and echoed against the brick walls of the alley.
Well there went that plan
She dropped the rope like it was a scalding tea kettle and bolted toward Archie at the mouth of the alley. âI thought you said you checked to make sure that Majorâs didnât have an alarm,â she screamed as they sprinted out of the alley and turned down the street. Majorâs and Sons store was on a road that was a busy shopping plaza during the day but in the wee hours before dawn not many fine ladies were out and about looking for jewels and the whole street was empty. If they were lucky, perhaps no one would hear the alarm and they could make it to freedom. She kept her hands over her head, waiting for the instant when the security bees reached them and she felt the sharp prick of a stinger loaded with a paralyzing concoction to keep her in place until the Peelers arrived.
âStop! Ruffians! Thieves!â A hoarse male voice bellowed.
Jessa didnât stop. Even if she was inclined to find herself  in the gaol for a bit of burglaryâ which she wasnât-- she wasnât about to stick around and let one of those buzzers get their stingers in her skin. Been there. Done that. The three days of fever and hallucinations made her certain it was an experience she did not want to repeat.
âCome on,â Archie panted beside her, keeping pace but not running ahead like she knew heâd easily be able to do. âThereâs an alley down here we can duck into and the buzzers wonât follow.â
âWhat about the Peelers?â
âItâs out of this sectorâs footpath. They wonât chase us if we havenât actually got the goods on us. Not worth their time.â
âRight.â She tried to run faster, her lungs on fire. Behind them she could hear the whistles and the crank crank of the police clackers, waking anyone who might be in Mayfair to let them know that thieves were afoot and that the chase was on. Then the clack clack of the rattles grew louder.
âBloody bollocks!â Archie cursed, his breathing easy even as she struggled to keep up her pace. âMajors must have paid off two sets of police. Sly old fox.â
âWhat do we do?â She panted as he grabbed her arm and pulled her right at the next street, circling them back towards the blaring alarm.
âWe find somewhere to wait them out,â Archie retorted. âUnless you think we can outraceââ
Just then an arm shot out of nowhere, slamming across Archieâs throat and he jerked away from Jessaâs hand.
She turned as the heavyset man who the arm had belonged to stared down at Archie and then back at her. âYouâve done a naughty thing my boys,â the man grinned.
She saw the shadow behind him a brief second before something thick came down on the manâs head and his eyes rolled backwards in his head, while his knees collapsed beneath him.
âAye, and theyâre still a better prospect than you, you worthless tub of knuckles and blubber.â A thick Welsh accent announced and Jessa stared, open mouthed at the slight man who had sneaked up behind their attacker and coshed him over the head with a club.
âCome on,â the still hidden Welshman prompted. âI canât carry your friend all on my own. Help me give him a heave. Unless you feel like spending the last of your short days in one of Queen Vickyâs cells.â
She grabbed Archieâs right arm, while the Welshman grabbed his left, and helped him to his feet.
âCan you stand?â the Welshman asked.
Archie coughed thickly and then nodded.
âCan you run?â Jessa looked around, the street was still empty besides the three of them and the now unconscious man that their savior had smashed in the head but she could hear the clackers of the police rattles getting louder as their whistles echoed off the nearby buildings.
âCome on then, weâll have to find out how steady you are as we move.â The Welshman looped one of Archieâs arms over his shoulders and hustled them toward a shop on the corner. The lamp at the corner illuminated the sign above the door. Flincherâs Fine Books.
âYouâre a bookseller?â she asked as they started helping Archie up the three shorts steps into the store, dragging him most of the way.
âAmong other things,â the man replied hurriedly as he closed the door behind them. âCome on you two. Best if weâre out of the window before those half-wits come racing by. Itâs not likely theyâll have a thought to search the stores but you never know when one of them might suddenly get smarts to go along with his whistle and his hat.â
Archie coughed once, wetly, and then pulled away from Jessaâs hands. âIâm fine.â
âAre youââ
âIâm fine. He just took me by surprise is all. Iâve had worse.â
âYeah?â Jessa muttered as she followed Archie and the other man deeper into the shop. âIâd hate to see what the other guy looked like after that.â
âAbout the same as he looked when he started in on me,â Archie answered. âNot much fight in a six year old, no matter how brawny he might be.â
âHere now.â The Welshman led them into a back room and turned up the gaslights that ringed the room. âThis is a bit better. You can wait here until dawn, leave while theyâre changing the guard.â
âRight.â Jessa stared at her surroundings. The room was shabby. Nothing more than a storage space. If a bookstore were in need of a storage space filled with boxes and barrels. A collection of fine pocket watches scattered across one of the tables. Two automatons in the corner. Typical shop drones. Most likely for shelving books or washing windows.
âCharles Flincher.â The Welshman stuck his hand out toward Archie. âPurveyor of fine literature for the educated London public. Or what passes for educated in London these days.â
Archie took the manâs hand and gave it a brief jerk up and then down. Just barely a handshake instead of an attack. âArchie Parker.â
âErstwhile jewel thief.â Flincher added helpfully before he glanced at Jessa. âAnd you?â
âCurious.â She looked pointedly around the room. âWhy does a bookseller got a storage room full of unlabeled gin?â
âA clever one arenât you?â Flincher looked at her appraisingly. âI wonder why it is that Mr. Archie Parker and his clever girl companion â â
Flincher narrowed his eyes at her and cocked his head to the side like a dog waiting outside the horse butcherâs stall. âYou are a girl under all that soot and cap arenât you?â
Jessa pulled her cap off and her braid fell free as she narrowed her eyes at him.
âYes, I thought so.â Flincher nodded before he turned to Archie. âYouâll want to quit using trousers as a ruse for this one, otherwise youâre going to attract more attention than you deflect. And none of it the kind youâll like I imagine.â
Jessa gaped. âIâll thank you to keep your thoughts about my trousers to yourself!â
âItâs not just my thoughts love,â Flincher said, letting his eyes graze over her in a slow up and down. âItâs any man in London. Including this one here I expect. A bit of an ogle is fine boy but not if itâs going to make your thieving go pear shaped. But that would be something a smart thief would think of and you two donât impress me as having an overabundance of brains, considering you didnât make sure Majors didnât have an alarm in place before you went a burgalling.â
âI did check it though. Last week.â Archie protested. âBashed the glass in the main door and then ran for it before anyone could catch me. There was no alarm.â
âAye, and then Majors, whoâs not as dumb as you two,â Flincher said, his voice easy, âhad his glass replaced and an alarm added in the last two days. Seems he was worried about thieves since it became public that he had some fancy royal shine coming into the shop and then someone bashed his glass. Got him to thinking that maybe a little extra security might not be such a bad idea. And he was right too.â
Jessa glared at Archie. âI thought you were keeping an eye on the store so weâd know if that happened?â
âI was.â Archie protested. âBut people started to notice I was hanging around too much. So I thought it would be smarter to avoid attention and spend most of my time in the pub instead. But I walked by Majors at least twice a day.â
âA not so sound bit of logic there,â Flincher pointed out. âBut clever thinking for those of us who always appreciate themselves a bit of drink.â He motioned toward another door on the far side of the room. âThatâll lead you out to the alley. Streets should be clear of Peelers between five and six. That would be the best time to slip out of the neighborhood unnoticed. And if I were you? Iâd forget about trying to steal in this area for the next few weeks. I donât think your odds are good. Especially now that Teslaâs introduced his newest automata alarm systems. All the same security, no worries about the clockwork buggers being bribed or falling asleep like youâd worry about with a human guard. Not to mention theyâre a bit more sensitive about the ears.â
âWe wonât.â Jessa agreed before glaring at Archie, who looked sheepishly at his feet.
Mayfair was where theyâd scored all their biggest hauls. There were plenty of rich nobles with creaky windows and poorly locked safes that liked to leave their wealth laying about. But now that they were on the London Metropolitan Policeâs radar all those rich treasure troves had just slammed shut. After their failure in Kensington, robbing the Viscount Townshend and his American wife, if they werenât careful theyâd be back to picking pockets in Covent Garden and Nell wouldnât be pleased to see a drop in their profits. Not that sheâd take any less than when they were earning regular. Instead theyâd be forced to live on less and there wasnât much less they could take and still keep themselves alive.
âAnd if you ever happen to pick up anything of interest,â Flincher said as he opened the door heâd led them through. âDo remember that one good turn deserves another and I always like to pay a fair price for my steals.â
âWeâll keep that in mind Mr. Flincher,â Jessa said as he stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him.
She slumped heavily to the floor and stared at the ticking clock hanging from the wall across from her. Archie slumped down beside her. âRough nigh huh?â
âIf youâre not careful it could get rougher because Iâve half a mind to bash your brains in myself.â She brought her right hand up and slapped the back of his head.

Inside McLaren: Secrets and techniques of Fernando Alonsoâs unbelievable Baku drive
Inside McLaren: Secrets and techniques of Fernando Alonsoâs unbelievable Baku drive
Inside McLaren: Secrets and techniques of Fernando Alonsoâs unbelievable Baku drive
Alonsoâs entrance proper tyre might be seen beginning to collapse after a collision on the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Fernando Alonso described his drive within the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, by which he took a badly broken McLaren to a seventh-place end, as âprobably the greatest races of my lifeâ.
Solely now, although, can or not itâs revealed precisely how good a efficiency it was.
The Spaniard slipped beneath the radar within the rapid aftermath of the race in Baku, most likely as a result of occasions on the entrance have been so dramatic.
However Alonsoâs afternoon additionally deserves exploring.
BBC Sport was given unique entry to the two-time championâs automotive on the McLaren manufacturing unit because it arrived again from Baku and might reveal the extent of the injury and the impact on its efficiency.
Alonso himself was proven images of the injury to his automotive on Monday, and stated on Twitter: âNow Iâve little doubt. It was an unrepeatable race.â
It isnât the primary time the two-time world champion has talked up his personal performances since becoming a member of McLaren and being saddled with an uncompetitive automotive. With out judging the opposite events, although, this time it was undoubtedly justified.
Racing director Eric Boullier, who confirmed me across the automotive, stated the Spaniardâs efficiency was âa mega race. What he did is unbelievable.â
Alonso tweeted this picture of his automotive after the race, saying he was âproudâ of his drive
How unhealthy was the injury?
Alonso was caught in a collision with two different vehicles between turns two and three on the primary lap and suffered punctures in each his right-hand tyres. By the point he reached flip 15, two corners earlier than the lengthy pit straight, it was right down to its wheel rims.
The 36-year-old in some way dragged the automotive again to the pits, however within the course of it suffered in depth injury.
The aerodynamics of System 1 vehicles are extraordinarily delicate, and every flick and curve on the extensively sculpted bodywork is there for a purpose â to reinforce efficiency.
I used to be not allowed to take images, for confidentiality causes. However essentially the most dramatic injury to Alonsoâs automotive was to whatâs referred to as the âtea-trayâ â the a part of the ground that stands proud beneath the drivers legs, and which helps outline the airflow beneath and across the sides of the automotive.
Within the entrance of this there was a triangular gap, about 30cm by 20cm, in addition to important injury to the forefront, as if somebody had set about it with a strong hammer. A few of the heavy tungsten ballast thatâs saved within the flooring was lacking.
Behind the automotive, there was injury alongside the right-hand aspect of the ground all the best way from the very again of the diffuser â the upward slope on the rear â to ahead of the rear wheel.
Two sculpted curves on the right-hand aspect of the rear diffuser have been gone. In entrance of the rear tyre, two key aerodynamic shapers have been lacking, too â what McLaren name a fence, a longitudinal curve, and a spat, a form of vertical, rectangular scoop-shape.
All in all, Boullier, stated the injury price â20 factors of downforce, roughly â so half a second a lapâ.
Regardless of this, after altering tyres and entrance wing, Alonso returned to the race and lapped sooner than team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne on all however a handful of laps.
How did he get it again to the pits?
Even getting the automotive again to the pits within the first place was one thing of an achievement, Boullier stated.
âThe entrance tyre deflated right away after flip three after which it takes a while earlier than you lose the tyre from the rim,â Boullier stated. âThe rear proper tyre deflated I feel round flip 15.
âYou possibly can see [from the television footage] that after coming into the pit lane, the automotive is just not driveable, and truly he hit the wall on the right-hand aspect.
âAt that stage, he instructed us after, he didnât know learn how to deliver the automotive to the pit. He did not know if the automotive would steer. He simply tried to go straight on the quick lane and he thought he would depart it there and we might take it out [of the race].
âOn the final minute, he turned and the automotive steered into the pit-stop bay. We made a joke with him and stated it was the very best positioning of the weekend.
âHe stated: âLetâs change the tyres and entrance wing and go.â From the pit wall, I noticed these flames throughout the ground. The automotive was on hearth.â
McLaren couldnât see all of the injury, as a result of the entrance flooring is hidden by the aerodynamic shapers behind the tyres.
So after checking the automotive was structurally sound and secure, they despatched Alonso again out with new tyres and entrance wing. He spent a few laps asking what they may see from the information and whether or not they wanted him to alter any settings. It turned out that, whereas it had misplaced downforce and was theoretically slower, it felt OK to drive.
âTruly, the automotive was nonetheless roughly balanced, surprisingly,â Boullier says. âThe rationale was there was this huge gap within the entrance flooring, so we misplaced downforce on the entrance and rear. So the automotive was not very effectively balanced, however it was nonetheless driveable. He did not complain about something, not even driveability.â
How did Alonsoâs efficiency evaluate with Vandoorneâs? The Belgian was âstruggling together with his tyres greater than common,â Boullier says, however Alonso completed two locations forward, and his common lap time was 0.521 seconds faster, in a automotive theoretically 0.5 seconds slower.
Particles spills throughout the monitor as Alonso continues to drive his broken automotive
How did Alonso do it?
This isnât the primary time Alonso has over-achieved in a broken automotive.
In qualifying on the 2006 Italian Grand Prix, a rear tyre failure left his Renault with damaged rear bodywork, however he went on to set the fifth fastest time â and sooner than team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella in a wholesome automotive.
Renaultâs sporting director Alan Permane, then a race engineer on the group, stated of that efficiency: âHalf the automotive was ripped off. We measured the downforce heâd misplaced, calculated what that ought to have translated to in lap time, and he misplaced nowhere close to that. It is like he form of refuses to simply accept it.â
Now, Boullier says: âHe has this facility to modify his driving fashion all the time to go well with the automotive steadiness. He is likely one of the very uncommon ones. Relying on the steadiness, whether or not you will have entrance [brake] locking, rear locking, right away he adjusts his driving to not harm the tyres. In that case, it helped him loads.
âI evaluate him generally to a shark when it smells blood within the sea. Then it begins to chase. Fernando is similar. In that mode, he determined: âChange the tyres, letâs return racing, simply examine the steadiness and inform me what I have to do if I want to alter one thing.â
âAll weekend, truly, he was telling us: âNothing is vital aside from ending the race. Itâll be chaos. We have to undergo the chaos and end the race and we might be within the factors.â
âI feel that is why he got here again saying: âChange the tyres, change the entrance wing, donât be concerned, Iâm going to drive it like itâs.'â
Boullier believes that Alonsoâs mindset in these early races has been affected by the groupâs tough begin to the season, with a automotive far off the tempo they have been anticipating.
After justifying their resolution final 12 months to separate with engine companion Honda on the premise that theyâd probably the greatest chassis on the grid, McLaren have joined forces with Renault solely to seek out theyâre round a second lap slower than Crimson Bull, who use the identical engine.
Alonso has certified 11th as soon as and 13th 3 times within the first 4 races. McLarenâs lack of tempo has led to chief technical officer Tim Goss being faraway from his submit.
But, within the races, Alonso has taken three sevenths and a fifth, and heâs sixth within the driversâ championship. Largely because of him, McLaren are fourth within the constructorsâ championship.
This, Boullier believes, has influenced the group as effectively. In any case, they may have determined to retire the automotive in Baku, given the extent of the injury.
âPossibly we received conditioned as effectively by him all weekend saying: âWe have to end the race; that is the important thing,'â Boullier says. âWe are also in a unique place. Qualifying tempo is just not our greatest and so now we have shifted our mindset to: âWe have to seize any factors we are able to.â And meaning by any means we have to end the race.
âThat is our mindset since Australia. We wish to capitalise on the primary 4 races and seize as many factors as doable.â
Was it considered one of Alonsoâs greatest races?
Alonso is a two-time world champion having received the 2005 and 2006 Driversâ Championships
Drives like this go down in F1 folklore. Ayrton Senna profitable in Brazil in 1991 caught in sixth gear for the previous few laps. Michael Schumacher ending second in Spain in 1994 caught in fifth gear for a lot of the race. Or Alonso himself in Malaysia in 2010, scuffling with a malfunctioning gearbox whereas battling with Jenson Buttonâs McLaren.
Boullier has labored with Alonso at McLaren for greater than three years, and earlier than that they have been rivals when the Frenchman was at Lotus â now Renault â and the driving force at Ferrari. How does Boullier fee Alonsoâs race in Baku?
âWhenever you see the situation of the automotive, positively it is likely one of the greatest ones,â he says. âHe did another superb issues â some instances whenever you really feel heâs in one other world.
âThe consistency he had with the tyres and tyre degradation and managing the tyres, particularly with the protection automotive and every little thing, and he did it.
âThen, on the last security automotive restart, we stated: âOh my god, with the automotive he has, everybody goes to move him.â However no.â
Actually, Alonso went on the assault, and took seventh place from Williamsâ Lance Stroll on the final lap.
âHeâs an actual fighter,â Boullier says.
