Oh, definitely. Again, I'll be writing this out with post-Death Island Leon in mind!

Alnost any parent finds it difficult to accept that their child is now a completely independent adult who can live their life on their own. Some parents find it more difficult than others. I do see Leon sorta falling into that category. It's not necessarily about the possessiveness or losing his role as a parent on his part, as I honestly think that he's the type of father that will be genuinely proud to see his kid thriving on their own. As long as he sees his child happy, he is also happy.

In Leon's case, it's more about the passage of time and his worries for his child's (in this case daughter's) safety. It'll probably hit him all at once: that his kid is actually and truly an adult now. It's one thing to have her turn 18 while still living under his roof, and it's completely another to personally help her pack up her belongings and then move in into a place of her own. Whether it's just a dorm room, or a full apartment. The reality hits him straight in the face right there, and it can be a bit of a pain to sort out.

Even though he is aware that this is not the end but rather the start of something new, it nevertheless stings to know that things will no longer be the same. He'll also get smacked in the face with realization of his own age, figuratively speaking. He wasn't feeling all that old while his daughter was still living with him, but when she's out on her own, and he's forced to look back on everything? Yeah. He'll have a good, long moment of juat sitting down in silence and reflecting on his life, feeling kind of old as hell now. Most likely holding a glass of whiskey (nothing over the top tho! He won't fall into his old habits like this!)

On the other hand, there's also the issue of him no longer being right there in case she gets in trouble. Now, I do think Leon sort of mellows out with his protective tendencies over the years if he gets to live out a simple, safe life with his family. However, they will never really disappear entirely. After all, it's just another way he shows his affection. Even though he occasionally goes too far. The idea of not being there when she might need him gnaws away at him more than anything else does. It scares him. What if she needs help with something? Like, what if her sink gets clogged, and he's out of touch? What if she gets in trouble with some shady people? Young people are notorious for being too naive for their own good, after all. What if she just has a bad day at school or at work, and he can't be there to cheer her up or be a shoulder to cry on? What if she get hurt?

It's easy for these types of 'what ifs' to spiral way out of control to the point of absurdity for someone like him. I'd say that's probably the biggest obstacle for him out of all of them.

Of course, there's also the newfound loneliness. The house seems that much more empty and quiet: no usual evidence of his kid being there now. Even the ones he used to find annoying. No music coming from her room, no plates left in the sink, and no soda cans taking up room in the refrigerator. It's like a piece of his home is missing, and that's hard. This feeling of loneliness comes and passes in waves. Stronger at times, weaker at others. He'll probably avoid her room for a week or two, though, when it's especially hard for him. In order to avoid being overly emotional. He has to actively fight back the impulse to dial his daughter up every few hours or so, not wanting to annoy her. And he does understand that she needs to carve out a path for herself.

It's just... hard.

Fortunately, all of this can be managed. I do feel like his partner will be a huge pillar of support for him in this challenging time as he adjusts to the new reality. It's not all negative. Now they have the entire house to themselves, at least. It serves as a strong incentive to focus on one another. Maybe plan some romantic dinners to bring back memories of the younger years. Or even renovate the yard. Keeping his mind off the absence of his kid is a good way to keep his spirits high without getting all down in the dumps over it.

There is also a newfound sense of understanding to be built between him and his daughter. Perhaps they share a few heart-to-heart talks about it all before their move. That way, they can both get ready for the day it does finally happen and help each other out in small but meaningful ways. Daily calls are a great way to ease Leon into all of this. Hearing his little girl talk about her days to him - whether it's her gushing over something exciting or ranting out her frustrations - is a wonderful way to remind him that just because she is not physically there anymore, their relationship remains as strong as it was.

In a way, it's a clumsy period of change for everyone involved. And that's something that can bring their family even closer together in the end. Also, you can absolutely bet on the fact that Leon will give out the biggest bear-hugs ever when his daughter comes over to visit. That's a must.

A very bizarre phenomenon I've been thinking about lately is how much people who have a habit of treating conversations like a competition focus on turning conversations into a competition of negativity and suffering.

A few examples of what I'm talking about:

Person A: Phew, I sure am tired and out of it today, I only slept for about five hours last night

Person B: HA that's NOTHING! I wish I had it as good as you! I only slept for THREE hours last night! *had a smug shit eating grin like they just won the conversation and should get a trophy for their conversational victory*

Or

Person A: Whew, I had a weird dream last night.

Person B: HA you know NOTHING about weird dreams! Mine are so fucked up there's no way you'd be able to handle my dreams!! *cue smug shit eating grin and a sense of winning the conversation and dominating their conversational partner*

I mean, don't get me wrong, "ha that's nothing (gives an example of something worse) can be done in a friendly joking way when talking about some experiences, but you can tell when someone says it in an abrasive way accompanied by a smug shit eating grin that this is someone trying to win the conversation by out-suffering you.

I assume the type of people who try to "win" conversations by turning every conversation into a competition of who has it worse (and you just know they're in it to win it) are people who feel starved of attention and compassion and are desperately trying to get some.

However, this is by far the absolute worst and most juvenile way to get that attention and compassion they crave. I guess I can understand when teenagers do this, but when co-workers in their 40's and 50's are still doing this it is, to put it bluntly, it's rather pathetic that they haven't learned better ways of getting attention and compassion by now, because this is a really good way just exhausting and annoying other people rather than making them feel sorry for you.

That might sound harsh and mean, but I have little patience for grown adults who still lack the ability to try to get attention and compassion without trying to putting other people down. It's ironic that their methods for getting what they want are by putting others down and robbing them of the very thing you yourself want so badly.

At the heart of this method is some core belief of "only I truly know suffering and nobody else could possibly know suffering the way I do, and I need to make this clear to others by belittling their hardships and inconveniences and making sure they know that only I truly know what it means to feel bad."

In other words, this behavior comes from a place of selfishness and unwillingness to feel compassion for the hardships, suffering, or even just inconveniences of others. It's main character syndrome.

I can forgive when someone without a fully developed prefrontal cortex does it. However, from a grown adult, if you think you are the only person whose hardships truly matter and this justifies belittling other's problems, you need to grow up.

When having conversations with others, avoid being contrarian for the sake of it, and avoid one-upmanship.

Although you're not necessarily a bad person if you find yourself being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, or trying to one-up everything someone else is saying, as these are behaviors people often do subconsciously when they're feeling insecure, threatened, or even if they're trying to impress whoever they're talking to, it's still important to try to be mindful of it.

You are certainly allowed to disagree with people, there is nothing inherently rude about disagreeing with someone, as it is possible to politely and respectfully disagree. Just ask yourself, do you genuinely disagree with your conversation partner? Or do you just feel as though contradicting for the sake of it will make you appear smarter or more confident?

Some people might think it makes them appear smarter or more confident to always contradict and/or one-up, but it often has the opposite effect making you actually appear insecure and/or possibly ignorant.

If you're being unnecessarily contrarian or repeatedly one-uping your conversation partner, there's a good chance you're frustrating and/or annoying them. Many people find it exhausting for conversations to be treated like a competition.

chase/logan for the ask meme as you said you ship them now

When I started shipping it if I did: After I wrote that bit about Chase giving Logan a shirt that said "never topped anything in his life" I was like oh no, that's kind of cute. I would draw it if I had any artistic ability.

My thoughts: No thoughts just smut.

What makes me happy about them: I find them fun to write, it's a nice balance (or at least I try to make it so) of them being funny and mean to each other while also still evidently caring about each other.

What makes me sad about them: They are not a ship I get sad about but they should probably learn some communication skills.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I started writing them out of spite because I hate all the way they were written on FFnet. They suffer from what I would term Mulder/Krycek syndrome which is where people are desperate for a loving queer couple so they apply it to ships where it absolutely does not fit, which in the X-Files fandom manifested as writing Mulder and Krycek being loving partners and hating Scully despite Krycek being a murderer and despite the entire show revolving around Mulder and Scully loving each other. Zoey similarly got vilified in fics and Chase and Logan were just incredibly OOC. Mulder and Krycek are simply not going to do anything other than have hate sex, and Chase and Logan aren't going to stop being antagonistic or competitive just because they get together either.

Things I look for in fanfic: I do not.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:  Anyone.

My happily ever after for them: Having fun and staying friends.

Who is the big spoon/little spoon: They absolutely do not spoon because intimacy and emotions and shit, but sometimes they do end up draped across each other in very odd positions.

Les Amis Modern AU: What They Wish Others Believed About Them (Part 5)

[I kind of wrote this in response to some general trends in characterising the Amis. There are some stereotypes which I'm not quite comfortable with.]

[Hey, y'all! I'm so sorry for not posting this series for a long time, I was flattened for the past 12 days by COVID-19. We have Cosette and Marius today, and I'm so glad that I am feeling better enough to write about them. Cheerio!]

Cosette:

• Is fed up of being considered dainty, fragile, weak and excessively nice, a bit of a pushover. She is anything but. Living with crappy foster parents don't really let you do that. She can stand up against bullshit with biting sarcasm if necessary. It's just that Cosette doesn't rise to the bait very easily, because she has trained herself to ignore battles which don't need her attention. But that doesn't mean that she needs to be protected all the time.

• Is sick of having to relate her childhood traumas in order to not be judged as being a privileged airhead. Cosette likes buying nice things. She likes fashion, and she has some habits from Catholic school, still. She spends a lot of money on her friends and loved ones. She is sunshiney and injects bougie humour and fun into meetings. That doesn't mean that she knows nothing about the shitty world, and that she doesn't actively try to make ethical choices in her consumer behaviour and social commitments. She really dislikes the "Ohhhhh" moment coming from someone judging her for her privilege when someone tells her story to them. Why presume that people are shitty for no reason, damnit?

• Is sick of being mistaken as straight. On one memorable Pride, she was called "straight passing". She dislikes the term immensely. She thinks that people do not have the liberty to immediately assume that she is heterosexual because Marius is her partner. Similarly, people do not get to assume her sexuality because she presents stereotypically femme.

• She feels insecure and uncomfortable when people fix too much attention on her in relation to someone else, as if to scrutinize her. It happened twice amongst the Amis, once when Marius introduced her as his crush for the first time, and once when they came to know that she and Eponine knew each other since childhood, and that Eponine's parents were her abusive foster parents. She likes it better if she were befriended for being herself.

• She feels a little frustrated that people didn't get her conflicting feelings towards Eponine. People immediately assumed that she forgave and forgot everything Eponine had done or said when they were children, in her "characteristically sweet way". Actually, the first time she saw Eponine, her fear reared its ugly head again and she almost ran out of the Musain. There was much dancing around Eponine (who seemed worn out and super uncomfortable as well) and it is only with Marius and Courfeyrac's help that Cosette could start a conversion with Eponine. She did it not be particularly forgiving (though she eventually forgave her anyway), but because she needed to leave her emotional baggage behind and move on.

• A large part of Cosette's forgiveness towards Eponine was fuelled by the knowledge of Eponine's own abuse at her parents' hands. As someone who had faced quite a bit of the same abuse, she needed to put her foot down. Cosette was extremely angry about it, and her anger made sure that Eponine could separate from her parents faster, and eventually get custody of her siblings.

• She hates, hates, hates it when people remind her that she's lucky to get an adoptive father like Valjean particularly after she has a row with him. Just because her foster parents were shitty doesn't mean that she cannot speak against some of Valjeans imperfections! And children often disagree with their parents. She doesn't need to be dampened with the idea that she should basically think Valjean to be perfect because of her past. She is fiercely loyal to Valjean, and doesn't need anyone to test that.

• Cosette is protective of Marius. No one gets to mow Marius over with judgements and snide comments. In fact, Marius found himself being not so much the butt of jokes anymore after Cosette teaches him to stand up for himself. At the same time, Cosette does not helicopter parent Marius. She does tease him within limits, and does not usually interfere when he has disagreements with the Amis. It is a fine balance which does exhaust her sometimes.

• Cosette can be mischievous, even impish. She can land punches (whether they hurt or not doesn't matter), ace paintball/mudslinging matches, play the best pranks on April Fool's Day and curse like a sailor if needed. She is especially proud of the wide-eyed look she still gets from some of the Amis at her antics. She can also get people out of trouble faster than you can say "bail".

Marius:

• Marius feels scared of being judged. It is really, really difficult to understand your own privilege when you come from a super rich, super bigoted family (read grandfather). He has taken lots of embarrassing knocks and call-outs every day till now, but he is learning, and learning fast. The Amis know, and for them he isn't some peripheral person anymore, but an integral part. But sometimes he wakes up with nightmares of being kicked out as a wokeboi and a fraud by the whole group. He often stumbles over his words because he panics that maybe what he is trying to say is problematic. It takes him months to take any initiative in the Amis because he suffers from imposter syndrome all the time.

• Marius hid all information about his favourites (he loves strawberry rosé macarons and silver needle tea, for instance) because he thought that he would be judged as a rich brat. Funnily, it was Ferre who had figured these out and was the first Amis to give him a small tea chest and a box of macarons as a birthday gift (followed closely by Courf and Jehan with a huge birthday party). It took time for Marius to understand that just because he got a bit panned for his political opinions the first time, it doesn't mean that the Amis hate him.

• Quite unlike popular belief, Marius and Ferre do get along very well. They share a lot of niche interests (poring over etymology dictionaries and having a love of museums and trivia nights). They did discuss that first "to be free" moment, and Marius had placed his request to be given more chances to undo his problematic stances. (There was also another "to be free" moment that had left Ferre stunned, but it's a them thing). It hurts Marius when people immediately think that he's probably annoying Ferre when they hang out.

• Marius is not stupid. Please. The whole idea people have that he is stupid because of his awkwardness and shyness is plain mean at times. No, he doesn't need to be talked to slowly, like talking to a child. Whenever he has the courage, he brings up a lot of valid points in Musain meetings. He is extremely resourceful in handling money and talks with boring rich people, and fundraisers have never been better without him. He is juggling a double Masters degree with internships and volunteer services, and picks up languages at the drop of a hat (including Elvish).

• Marius has also had that dangerous phase when, in a bid to be as radical as possible, he fell into trouble way too many times. Even the most even-tempered of them all (read Jehan) has outright cried in exasperation on finding Marius glaring at a policeman in a protest, promising to burn the place down with a flare if they didn't back off from hitting protestors. Marius has similarly taken punches and hits, and there was a time when Joly would hover around him to administer first aid as quickly as possible. It took Enj and R a whole day to explain to him the merits of self-preservation and that revolution today does not necessarily involve a militant loss of life.

• Marius has also that phase when he drove a college sophomore to tears with his radical speech. Aka attacking the heck out of the kid's problematic Facebook post. Cosette had to give him a talk. Marius is learning about how to be a zealous but kind activist every day.

Chapter 9, Part 2

*stares tiredly at clock that says 3:40 in the goddamn morning*

1. I find it interesting--

--that Sangwoo shows up behind Bum at the point when Bum’s tearing up. What timing you have, Sir Grim Reaper.

I can kinda hear Sangwoo’s thoughts in this part. Like ‘Ah yes the universe has righted itself again’ lol. Which would be gratifying to Sangwoo because he’s putting Bum back in his place and making sure Bum knows that he can’t fuck with Sangwoo the way Sangwoo is fucking with him. It’s sort of like Sangwoo ensuring himself that Bum has no power over him and, in that way, Bum is still safe to keep around. Bum can’t hurt him.

2. I wonder what’s going through Sangwoo’s head here

Seriously, with this strange expression...I want to say it’s guilt, but obviously it’s more like...curiosity than anything. Sangwoo seems to react whenever he sees Bum’s tears and not in a necessarily good way. More like neutral, like it can go either way depending on the situation. So now that Bum’s not only crying, but doing so silently--not daring to beg for his life and to anger Sangwoo--it’s like there’s a shift in Sangwoo.

I think we can see him tweak his plan a bit, do something he didn’t actually mean to do before seeing Bum’s expression. Again, it’s not quite guilt, but whatever it is makes him empathetic towards Bum. Something that no one before Bum could’ve evoked from him. And I don’t even think this is BECAUSE of Bum, but because of Sangwoo’s reaction to specifically Bum. It does show that, again, he is a sociopath, not a psychopath. Sangwoo is capable of empathy and his feelings for Bum is making that capability more pronounced.

The difference is important to emphasize because that explains why, in the end, Sangwoo worsens, even after he tries to get better. Even though Bum was the catalyst for his desire to change, Sangwoo is the only one who can actually change himself. But because his reaction to Bum deteriorated because he was facing his demons without any professional/genuine assistance to help him deal with those demons...he no longer reacted by trying to lessen Bum’s pain, but to burn Bum alive with him so that they both are drowning in the pain Sangwoo can no longer swim in.

...That’s something I’ll explore more when we get to the point where Sangwoo decides he no longer needs Bum.

3. Wait, what??

Is this...is this Sangwoo’s hand??  At first, I thought it was Bum reaching out to take a card, but then in the next panel, Bum still has both hands on his cards, so...this was...Sangwoo??  Why would his hand be trembling??? If he was motioning for Bum’s attention, then it would make more sense for the ‘tremble’ to be ‘wave’ or whatever other suffix.

Uhm. Well, if this was his hand trembling...then it might be because, again, he’s changing his plan just because he has seen Bum’s tears.  His hands are trembling because he’s doing something that is meant to alleviate someone’s pain. He wants to stop because the meaning of it is too scary to admit to, but he goes through with it because he can’t actually stop himself---thus, the trembling.

And I think this is when he decides, at this moment, to stop prolonging Bum’s suffering. This echoes back to Bum’s thoughts (’As long as there’s a chance to pull the joker, we’re both going to nervous’) and Sangwoo thinks the same also...which does show that these two can make great partners in crime in another time and world lol.

4. Lol, here you can see the North American vs Korean body language difference

Americans: HE’S FLIPPING BUM OFF OH MY GOD (honestly, I laughed at this too because it definitely appears this way and it cracks me up)

Koreans: Wait isn’t he just pointing...

Westernized or Western-familiar Koreans (Or Korean-familiar Westerners): ...Both. He’s definitely doing both.

This next panel is what makes me confused as to who the heck was trembling. Koogi is obviously trying to make this as vague as possible for a reason. And actually, I appreciate it, because you know that if she directly depicted Sangwoo trembling like that, there would be like “OHHHH SO CUTE” commentary or something...because, actually, that’s what a part of me is thinking. :’)

I do think that, if it was Sangwoo trembling, then Sangwoo purposefully used his middle finger like that to avoid thinking about the meaning behind his actions. He especially kept a smirk on his face so that he could keep his body language linked to the way he wants to perceive his thoughts (not a ‘I want to help Bum because he’s really suffering here’, but a ‘this is no longer fun with the way Bum is reacting, so I’ll end the game here’).

5. I LAUGHED SO HARD OH MY GOD

He’s like “Bum you dumb fucker, I try to help you and you fucking do this”. Asshole, what kind of clue are you giving Bum, especially since you have given him EVERY reason to believe that you are one step away from killing him (and don’t fucking lie because YOU ARE).

But the fact that he tries to make his intentions even clearer instead of just giving up because he’s annoyed with Bum...that really comes to show how he has started falling into Lima Syndrome.

6. Okay see now this confuses me

From what I remember and from the few things I skimmed over, Bum doesn’t actually...like killing. I think he’s closer to psychopathic tendencies than Sangwoo is (who is sociopathic), but he’s not actually psychopathic, so him feeling giddy does make me pause.

But I think what Bum is feeling giddy over is A) being able to one up this guy, who obviously is trying just as hard as Bum is to throw the other under the bus in order to live. He likes the power rush he’s feeling and this does come to show how him and Sangwoo both feel better at being able to overpower someone who is looking down on them. Sangwoo just takes extra perverse joy in it due to his sociopathy and his early, repeated exposure to death (not only death, but murder on a very personal scale between his parents).

BUT!

B) The fact that Sangwoo is helping him. Because if Bum were able to take pleasure in putting down anyone who looked down on him, then he would’ve felt vindicated rather than guilty and hesitant when thinking he could finally leave Sangwoo (though, if he were the type to feel vindicated over that, he probably would’ve been much more careful and determined to leave Sangwoo at that time). But the thing is, Bum is still in love with Sangwoo and that’s compounded by his Stockholm Syndrome.

So, knowing that Sangwoo is helping him and that means Sangwoo still wants him...that is more vindicating to Bum than one-upping Sangwoo ever could be. In future instances, where he could one-up Sangwoo, it’s clear that all Bum feels is guilt and shame because he knows that means Sangwoo will reject him. And that feels just as much as a death sentence as murder itself.

Though this is very revealing about why Bum crossed the line.  In a way, both Sangwoo and Bum have been continuously failing each other’s tests ever since they met. The thing is, they both want different things from each other. Sangwoo wants Bum to make him feel human and be Bum’s priority, Bum wants Sangwoo to want him despite the type of person he is and be equally obsessed with him.

Not only that, but the way they test each other is different.

Bum has this way of not acknowledging the reasoning behind his actions, so he ends up doing things instinctively so that he can also make excuses for his actions.  That way, if Sangwoo doesn’t react the way he ‘should’ (lovingly, forgivingly), he can easily back out and go a different reaction. However, if Sangwoo does react the way he should, then yay. He earns more and more of Bum’s loyalty.

Sangwoo keeps setting up these goddamn tests that is meant to ‘train’ Bum into responding the way Sangwoo wants him to respond. If Bum scueeds, then he gives him rewards via treating him lovingly and even sexually. If Bum fails, he keeps punishing him until Bum can prove that he’s not a lost cause and can still be loyal to Sangwoo.

They’re both equally manipulative in different, yet very damning, ways.

So yeah. The fact that Bum is the most comforted right now and the reason for it is because he’s still special to Sangwoo...that means the main reason why Bum tried to escape is because he didn’t feel like Sangwoo saw him as special at all.

On top of leaving Bum in the house--so Bum doesn’t even know where Sangwoo goes and he’s most likely with other girls--Sangwoo keeps comparing Bum to his mom (and this becomes even more of a problem later on). It has nothing to do with him wanting Bum and that must be (from Bum’s POV) the reason why Sangwoo hurts him--because he’s not actually his mom, nor is he someone special enough to keep alive or not hurt. I think, even more than the thought of dying, that is what hurts Bum to a point of wanting to die.

I have a lot more thoughts on this, but that’s pretty much the main point of it.

8. One thing to note here

Bum doesn’t seem to be thinking about this in terms of “Yay, I get to live another day”, but more “Yay, Sangwoo holds some affection for me”.  Obviously, he is worried about his life. Even though that’s not really his primary objective, being able to survive another day trumps whatever else. When faced with death, he’ll prioritize survival. But when faced with everything else, he becomes blind to the survival aspect to prioritize one-on-one, personal connection. 

So instead of thinking like...’Sangwoo’s level of affection is important to whether or not I survive’, it’s more like ‘Sangwoo’s level of affection is important because I want to be special to him’.

So, the fact that he feels good about Sangwoo liking him despite another man’s life being on the line does show what he’s feeling for Sangwoo is not completely Stockholm Syndrome. The love is there (because I’m not the type of of person to see love as a wholly positive thing lol, love is love, whether it’s abusive or uplifting), but so is obsession, possessiveness, and egotism.

That’s why, had Sangwoo actually treated Bum lovingly (I still believe he loved Bum, just again, in an abusive and toxic way), I think we could’ve seen a much more different response to card!dude and Jieun’s death.

But this also makes Bum’s refusal to kill people all the more interesting. Again, I don’t think it’s because he’s a ‘better’ person than Sangwoo morally. This will be interesting to explore once we get to Jieun’s death.

9. OH. RIGHT. OKAY.

I said earlier that Sangwoo was trying to end the game quickly so that Bum doesn’t have to deal with the anxiety any longer, but that’s actually not quite true (I’m still not totally wrong either though lol).

Actually, what Sangwoo has been doing is, in a way, trying to assure Bum that, yes, he is special. The thing with Sangwoo is that he’s really, really good at reading people. Too good at it (like, I only have insight into people’s thoughts if I have personally experienced their emotions in some way...for Sangwoo, he can read it like a goddamn book).

I think that is what caused his downfall, actually, because having uncanny insight into the worst parts of people can screw you up even more. In a way, Bum’s stubborn obliviousness to people’s motives is what was able to keep him sane in a way that Sangwoo was no longer able to.

So he can see that Bum is feeling betrayed, that he thinks Sangwoo is really trying to throw Bum away. And that is when Sangwoo realized...that, no, he wasn’t. His answer should’ve been yes, he should’ve been in agreement with Bum, but that isn’t what he was doing here at all.

I’m sure, at first, it really was about screwing with card!dude and showing his anger at Bum for being the catalyst behind his going to the gay bar. But when he saw Bum’s tears and felt the emotion he first felt when they first met, but even stronger...that is when he changed plans. Because he could see Bum’s thoughts before him, hurt that Sangwoo was abandoning him--and he could hear his own thoughts, telling Bum that he was wrong because...

...Because he didn’t want to abandon Bum.

10. Oh oh oh look at that expression, oh oh

So, from my last words, I just realized that maybe the change of plans Sangwoo had...it probably  had nothing to do with something as small as making feel Bum better about the game...but realizing that Bum is important enough to him that he’ll reenact his mother’s death with Bum himself, thus chaining Bum even tighter to him, WHICH.  GAH. JESUS. I’LL TALK ABOUT THAT MORE NEXT CHAPTER.

But yeah, the fact that Sangwoo was going to make such a change in his plans...when his hands (if those were his hands) were trembling in that panel, it was most likely due to the realization that Bum was no longer someone he could easily throw away.

And what does Sangwoo do whenever he’s experiencing new emotions?  He fucking forces his environment to go back into the emotional state he has been stuck in--the reason why he is like this in the first place. The new emotions are a danger, so there are only two ways to make himself feel safe again: Get rid of Bum, the outlier that is the cause for his entering the danger zone--or bring something back from the past in order to make his environment familiar again.

So, even though he never planned to enact his mother’s death, he has been reliving it day by day for years, so it actually isn’t too far left field that he would’ve needed some more time to think it up.

And honestly, Bum’s smile when he was thinking to himself ‘I’m giddy’, was probably something that further gave birth to this idea and made Sangwoo even more convinced to go through with it.

Because that would mean Bum would then feel the same way whenever Sangwoo killed someone (liberating, vindicated) and that would be all the more reason for Bum to stay with him. Because they’d be kindered spirits who found each other, the only people who would be able to understand each other.

11. Lol, actually, of all the times to be reminded of that incident...

The cola girl incident where Bum thought they were dating, but they definitely weren’t.

But yeah, I think because this is the most comforted Bum feels, more assured than ever that he’s important to Sangwoo (especially since, unlike himself who snuck in there, Sangwoo took card!dude back home like all the other girls).  So of course, he’ll be reminded of when he also felt so assured about something, only to be proven so fucking wrong later and be humiliated.

12. Which one which onnnneeee

Ah Bum here hoping that Sangwoo will pass his ‘test’.

One thing to also note is that the reason why Bum and Sangwoo’s testing methods are so different from each other is because Sangwoo’s methods wouldn’t work for Bum.

Bum is frail, not at all strong, so he can’t go the aggressive route. He can be easily overpowered.  Which also contributes to why he tends to put himself in the victim/submissive position. Because his tests are more like “Will you protect me? Will you save me?” And, again, Sangwoo’s tests are more like “Will you leave me? Will you curse me?“ But for both, they are also asking, “Will you be disgusted with me?”

13. Gomenasaaiiii...wait crap how do you say sorry in korean...

Honestly, there’s a reason why I saved this part but I’m too fucking tired to actually write everything down, so let’s just put down: Bum’s apology to the man seems more like a token one, said from moral obligation rather than personal shame, which will make it easier for him to make excuses later. Similar to why he used ‘love’ as the reason for stalking, but like this...is a lot worse lol. 

At the same time, I can’t blame either him nor card!dude because their lives are on the line. Sangwoo can and will kill them if they step out of line. To say that they are bad people just within the context of this moment can be potentially hypocritical when we cannot say with 100% certainty that we wouldn’t let someone die if it means we can live. 

Honestly, I’m just the type to really hate it when someone tries to preach higher morals, like they’re a better person than someone because they “I would’ve chosen differently/I chose differently” without at all understanding /why/ they chose differently from someone. Anyways.

15. *stares tiredly at clock that now says 4:20 in the goddamn morning*

Ahh. Son of a bastard. Absolutely asshole. Fucking...I dunno want else.  Oh wait, fucking piece of shit, there lol. 

Though, I do see a sweat drop there on Sangwoo’s cheek. I haven’t seen it in any other panels but this one, so it does make me wonder why because usually, the sweatdrops are indicative of unease. I remember seeing it when Bum asked to give Sangwoo a blow job. 

It’ll be something I’ll have to come back to after reading the next chapter, because I have a few ideas but I’m not sure which one to settle on. He could be laughing at Bum’s stupidity. Or maybe card!dude thinking that he could actually get out alive from this game. I’m really not sure here.

My favorite ships from kdramas - appreciation post (part 2)

I have no idea if you've been waiting for that but I described the last list as part one, so I guess I should make another one. So today is The day. BTS plays in the background, list is ready, I have exam in two days but who cares, let's go!

1. What’s wrong with secretary Kim? - Kim Mi So & Lee Young-Joon

Let’s be honest. We have Park Min-Young and Park Seo-Joon. It had to work. They had to had crazy-like chemistry, it was meant to be. Whenever there was a kiss I’ve been worried my computer will set himself on fire bc all this hotness. Iconic comedy, iconic character of Park Seo-Joon, iconic romance. Also can we all agree that Park Min-Young have like the best luck when it comes to screen partners? Shit, girl. You must have saved thousands of people’s lives in your past life.

2. While you were sleeping - Nam Hoong-Joo & Jung Jae-Chan

Second Male Lead Syndrome hit hard with this one. But still not hard enough to stop me from gushing over the Nam Hoong-Joo and Jung Jae-Chan cuteness. I mean, c’mon. Suzy is motherfucker queen and Lee Jong-Suk is so pretty it makes my eyes hurt. Plus I adore that they were just so idk normal? Not perfect like most of the kdrama’s couples. She has growing hair leg, and he can be gross sometimes. SO WHAT?! Welcome to the real world. They loved each other anyway.  

3. Innocent man/Nice Guy - Seo Eun-Gi & Kang Ma-Roo

Man, between all this fluffy couples this one is kinda dark. But that's exactly what I loved about them. She was a bitch, especially at the beginning. He was a the dickest dick in the whole Dickland, Mayor of Dickville. Two sinners, bad, broken and selfish. Raw. Different. Flawed. They were hurting, they've been hurt. The ending of the drama was meh for me but this couple stands strong. And you know that Song Joong-Ki is the only one for me. He just makes me so happy whenever he's on the screen.

4. Touch your heart - Oh Jin-Shim & Kwon Jung-Rok

They proved love exists in Goblin and now they did it again. Firstly: Oh Jin-Shim is one of my favorite female characters ever. She's just so cheerful and inspirational. I watched this drama when my life was kinda shit, but after watching her journey back to the top I felt great, like I could do anything. Secondly: Kwon Jung-Rok is the cutest idiot ever. He's so charming with this awkwardness of his. And together they create this cute, healthy kind of relationship I stan so much. LOVE THEM.

5. Her private life - Sung Deok-Mi & Ryan Gold

So like I said before I'm pretty sure that Park Min-Young could create great chemistry even with a plain chair. But holy shit, in Her Private life we're getting whole Mendeleev's table. The story is pretty simple, there's no incredible groundbreaking plot, but Kim Jae-Wook is so hot and works so amazing with Park Min-Young that I didn't even care for the plot. I just wanted to look at him as long as I could. Also, Ryan Gold is perfect boyfriend. I want him for next Christmas.

6. Angel's last mission: love - Lee Yeon-Seo & Dan

Omg, I shed so many tears on this one. Being completely honest I wasn’t huge fan of Lee Yeon-Seo at the beginning, she was really annoying for me. But Dan, my baby L, was such a cutie I decided to watch it despite of female character and boy, I am so happy I did that. It was truly touching, sad but beautiful story. And mains are just two puppies, so in love with each other, that you have this sudden desire to leave kdrama’s world, go outside, meet someone and being as cute as Yeon-Seo and Dan. Fortunately, this desire passes very quickly. I have another episode to watch, you know?

7. Cheer up! Sassy go go - Kang Yeon-Doo & Kim Yeol

I know most of you have a very strong Second Man Lead Syndrome when it comes to Sassy Go Go. And let me just tell you: I would die for Seo Ha-Joon. Ji Soo is one of my favs and he did such a breathtaking job in this drama. When I started watching it, I've actually been thinking I would be suffering, bc after watching few videos on YouTube I knew that SMLS is strong with this one. I wanted to ship him with Kang Yeon-Doo. And partly I do, I am. BUT DAMN. KIM YEOL. Like I said, I was prepared for loving Seo Ha-Joon. I was rooting for him even before watching. But then that one scene happened and that was it. I was done. You know which one I'm talking about. "One, you move away first. Two, I move away first. Three, since we're in this position anyway, we do it". It made my heart beat faster and since that moment I was sold. 

Btw that plot line with parents was totally unnecessary. Why, writers? Why?

8. Because this is my first life - Joon Ji-Ho & Nam Se-Hee

This drama is so important for me, you have no idea. I just felt it to the core of my being. And no, I didn't married my hot landlord although i'm not opposed that idea but it's just freaking incredible story about growing up, learning how to do this whole adult-shit, being your own person, being someone's person and finally about finding yourself. GOD, IT WAS SO GOOD. And main couple! UGH. My babies! I know I named Kwon Jung-Rok from Touch Your Heart the cutest idiot ever but in that moment I guess I had to forget about Nam Se-Hee, bc he wins that category. But he was also understanding and respectful and patient and just...kind. Just simply kind but somehow that is everything. Plus I love Kitty. It's the prettiest cat ever.

9. Extraordinary you - Eun Dan-Oh & Haru

The latest drama I watched and holy guacamole, I loved it so much. And even though I love Baek Kyung with my whole heart I don't even know why because he's an asshole, I just have to admit that Haru and Eun Dan Oh are freaking perfect for each other. THE WAY HE RESPECTED HER. Damn, that's some valuable shit right here. Watch and learn, boys. WATCH. AND. LEARN.

10. Encounter/boyfriend - Cha Soo-Hyun & Kim Jin-Hyuk

The last but not least. Actually, it’s my fav couple on this list. Noone is able to dethrone Kang Mo-yeon & Yoo Shi-jin from DOTS from being my fav ultimate, but damn I must say Soo-Hyun and Jin-Hyuk were really close to do that. I fell in love with them since the first scene and now, long after watching it, I still think about them everyday. I’m not even joking. Where you can find a man who’ll take cute photos of you and dance salsa with you on Cuba? With whom You could talk about poetry and art? And who will be as cute as Park Bo-Gum? Any ideas? I’m not asking for friend, I’m asking for myself.

Hamartia

~ The word hamartia refers to a flaw or mistake that leads to a fictional character's downfall. Classical tragedies revolve around the main character's hamartia, the tragic flaw that sets a series of disastrous events in motion. Achilles' heel was his hamartia – his fatal flaw.

      You grasped the man’s chin, your leather glove staining with warm blood. The man was tied to a chair, his legs and arms bound in a way you knew to be uncomfortably tight. His eyes were blindfolded, mouth gagged. Your eyes narrowed as you used the non bloody gloved hand to push some hair out of your eyes. Watching the man squirm was something that made you smile. Of course, part of you knew that inside you had been all screwed up. The old you would have started crying seeing the joy in your eyes. The joy of watching someone suffer. You felt zero sympathy towards those suffering. It was more of a learned behavior, if anything. You had decided that if this was your job in the mafia, then you should not only be the best, but also find pleasure in it. So that led you here; to this massive power trip. Everyone expected the most feared interrogator to be some man with a bald head and muscles. Instead they got this; some 20 year old girl with leather gloves permanently stained with blood. These gloves had been used by you for every job since the first one. In the beginning it was to trick yourself into thinking that these hands, the ones with the gloves, were not yours. Now, they were a sense of pride. 

“Tell me, mr. Joh,” You began, your voice sweet like honey, and just as slow as you undid his gag. “Why did you...” You thought for the right wording. It wasn’t just about getting them to say something, then you could be here for hours, no, it was also about asking the right questions. “Why did you betray our drug ring in Daegu?” start with the big question, then continue smaller when the hostage was difficult, as expected.

When the man didn’t answer, you clicked your tongue. Physical pain was all the rage in the industry when it came to getting information, but you always believed it to be the mental. That’s what made you different. You understood mental strain all too well. It wasn’t as apparent, but it had a higher rate of damage over a long period of time. You licked your lips. 

“Not very talkative, hm? Alright. I’ll go check on another guest.” You had a sadistic smirk on your face as you removed his blindfold, replaced the gag, and shut off the lights. The room was pitch black, not even a speck of light to be seen. That was the thing. A person wouldn’t be able to tell if they had their eyes open or not, it something was moving, if something was in there...watching them. 

You set your watch for three hours. That was an ample amount of time. Besides, you could tell he was going to be a goner without too much struggle. You were also glad you had asked Yoongi to make the walls soundproof in this wing of the base, it was extremely annoying to listen to screaming when you were trying to rest. 

Next, you slipped a door over. Your partner, Jimin, was busy with the young woman inside. She whimpered to be set free. You could tell she thought Jimin was you. If she thought this was bad--boy was she in for a surprise when you would start. Instead, you started your deceiving game. Jimin knew what you were doing the second you timidly opened the door. This was just another mind game. 

“Y-Y/N! What are you doing?!” You feigned innocence, rushing to the distressed hostage. She sobbed, looking at you with pleading eyes. 

“P-Please-” The woman could barely get a word in through her sobs. An evil part of you enjoyed it. The other part stayed silent. “Please you have to help me.” 

Once you had sufficiently calmed her down, you snapped your fingers, signalling Jimin to leave. 

“If you thought Jimin was bad, you’re going to hate this.” Your tongue grazed over your teeth as you tried to withhold a smirk. You had went from innocent girl to monster in a matter of seconds. The realization in this woman’s eyes was like heroine. You wanted more. You had wanted more since that first time. “You’re such a pretty thing. A shame that’s about to be ruined.” You leaned in, nose grazing her neck. Then you quickly pulled away as she continued her sobs. 

“Why are you doing this?! To save your own skin? Are you selfish?” The woman burst out, her lips trembling. “Selfish for your own life?” 

You could understand why she thought you were forced to do this. Once upon a time, yes. You hadn’t wanted to go down this path, but you had no family left and this had started becoming a second home. It was during training for this exact thing, but you had always been selfish. You had indeed saved your own skin. However, even now, Yoongi would ask if you still wanted to be doing this. You always said yes. After all, now you were his right hand man and he trusted you far more than anyone else. 

Your eyes bore into hers. 

“Don’t you know? Being selfish has always been my flaw. And right now, I’ll be selfish and indulge in one of my favorite activities.” You went and sat on the edge of the metal table in the corner of the room. You were so light- you couldn’t sleep and you barely ate, that’s just how you lived. Perhaps it came with the job. You fiddled with some buttons on the wall until you got the settings right. 

“Would you like some water?”

The rasp of the woman’s response was enough for you to know. 

“Good.” as you spoke, a single drop of water hit the woman’s brow, slowly sliding down into her eye. “I’ll be going now, toodles.” You said, almost innocently.

“Yoongi wants to see you.” Jimin spoke as you entered the hallway. You glanced at your watch. You still had an hour before the man needed to be checked up on. 

“Fine, but it needs to be snappy.” You grumbled, grabbing a black jacket off the hooks at the end of the hallway. You wore black leggings, a gray shirt (White showed far too much blood) and a black, jean, jacket. You walked briskly up the stairs from the basement and into the base’s old file room. It was old and only ever used for the dusty passageway to the basement. It was built before there were computer backups. Jimin kept a fast pace behind you as you rounded the corner and went out into the main room. It was bustling with trainees on a lunch break. The room hushed ever so slightly when you walked past. You were feared and the rumors that flew around the room may or may not be true. 

“I bet she burned someone alive once.” There was a whisper, more audible than the rest.  You grinned slightly, slowing and speaking loud enough from everyone to hear. 

“It wasn’t just once darling, and I don’t do it anymore. It takes weeks to rid the building of the smell.” There was dead silence, your boots making a loud banging nose as you climbed up the metal stairs.

 Unlike the sub level where the trainees trained, the upstairs ground level was a brilliant facade. It was a huge mansion on the outskirts of Seoul, of course the first floor was to be lavish. The higher ups slept in this mansion. The trainees left through underground passages to get back to their dorms which were still underground on the property. You opened the latch with ease, nimble fingers undoing the simple metal bar. It was there so when guests came, they would never find out their little secret. of course, everyone knew Yoongi was the head honcho, not someone to be messed with, but groups from all over had been obsessed trying to find the training facilities for them. The groups figured they could stop the entire base of operations from the beginning. As you can see, it failed miserably each time. 

You checked your watch again. You didn’t want to keep Yoongi waiting and you supposed the hostage could wait a little longer. It wasn’t like they meant anything to you. 

As you climbed yet another flight of stairs, you found yourself annoyed at how much effort was needed to reach the laziest man you knew. At the end of the intimidating hallway lay a set of imposing dark oak doors. They were decorated with menacing rot iron markings and black iron knockers in the form of snakes. The tongues came out of the beasts, the ring acting like a piercing on the snakes’ tongues. You knocked on the doors, tapping your foot impatiently. 

On the outside of the house, it would look huge, yes, but you would also notice a rounded roof off to the side of one end of the house. It stood tall and on its own, yet attached to the house. That separate building was entirely Yoongi’s office. Extravagant, yes, but you knew it was a tactic to intimidate rivals. You could never be intimidated by him. 

“Come in.” The voice sounded lazy. Before you stepped in, you glanced behind you. 

“Jimin, when my watch hits zero you go question Mr. Joh, if that doesn’t work, you know what to do.” 

He nodded and walking away hastily as the watch was counting down seemingly faster than normal. You watched him leave. Then you slipped inside wordlessly. Yoongi stared at you, his eye examining your face. Your cheek was wet. Before he could ask, you answered quickly. 

“Hostage wouldn’t stop crying, must’ve rubbed off on me.” You said bluntly. 

“Ah.” Then his eyes traveled to your hands. “I thought I told you not to wear those dirty gloves in here. They stink of blood and remind me...never mind.” 

When he trailed off, you nodded, acknowledging your rough past with him. Well, actually it wasn’t rough at all...it was, it was sweet. And it’s also part of the reason you understood yourself a selfish person now. It wasn’t even to get back at him anymore, you just accepted it as it was. You quickly slipped off the gloves, placing them neatly in your pocket. 

“Sit.” You did as he said, plopping unceremoniously onto a leather seat, your right leg dangled off the side. His jaw tensed, seeing how care free you were. It still amazed him how you tortured people and yet smiled as if nothing was the matter. 

The pale man sighed, combing his hand through his hair. 

“Y/N,” 

“Yes?”

“We’re getting a very special guest tonight. He should be here by midnight if all goes well. I want you to take care of him, get me as much information on him. Even the smallest things, I don’t care. He is key to the newest rising mafia’s great success recently. I have his file.” Yoongi spoke drawn out, but snappy, liking to get all the information out at once. God forbid you interrupt him. You expected a large case file. Usually it would have details about that person’s life. Even the smallest thing could be useful. So it was much to your surprise when you got a manila folder with one sheet of paper in it. You slowly took out the paper. Your eyebrows scrunched up as you stared at his portrait. He was a handsome man with strong features. You pulled more of the paper out now. 

“Yoongi.” 

“Yes?” 

“What the hell am I supposed to do with this?” 

The file was blank. Completely blank, save his portrait. How could someone be so mysterious? You knew that your gang had the best hackers around. How come they couldn’t find anything except this photo of him?

You could tell he must be thinking the same thing. “You’re dismissed.” He knew he couldn’t trust himself around you still. 

You left in an annoyed huff and stormed back down to the basement.

You grabbed some salt on your way from the kitchen. Then you shoved Jimin aside once you got down to the basement. He had been carefully carving the man’s back with an intricate design of the gang’s symbol; a bulletproof vest. You admired his clean lines, despite the moans of pain from the man and blood that pooled on his back. You pulled out your gloves and got to work, quite literally putting salt in the wound. As you absent minded-ly made the man scream in agony, you pondered how to get into this mysterious man’s head. You hated that you were so good at what you did, that you were assigned an enigma such as the man that would be drug in like an animal tonight. Jimin could tell you were upset about something, but he didn’t pry and left the room without a second thought.

It was midnight and you waited. It was 1 A.M. and you waited. This was taking longer than usual. Then you heard the door slam open behind you. You had been waiting in the interrogation room for him. Jimin dragged in his body. 

“What took so long?” You sniffed. 

“Sorry, he wasn’t responding to the dosage of sleeping medicine I gave him so I had to up the dosage a lot more until he was compelled under.” Jimin explained, a tired expression on his face. He ran his hand over his face and sighed. 

“Great, now he’ll be under for a while.”

“yup, and I’m heading to bed.” Jimin yawned, not caring to help you tie him up as he left. You rolled your eyes and tied the man up. Perhaps it was your pride, but you enjoyed have a victim wake up to see your face staring right back at you. Usually they were startled, but this time it was you as you looked up to find him staring at you, expressionless. 

“Who are you?” His voice was gruff and low. 

“Now now,” You shook off the initial shock quickly and adorned an almost angelic smile. “I’m the one that’s going to be asking the questions here.” You crouched, looking up at him. Your elbows rested on your knees, displaying the bloodied leather gloves. He glanced down, took note of the blood, and swallowed. It was a detail anyone but you would’ve missed. That hesitation. You stood up and grabbed a dangerously curved knife from the wall. 

“So why don’t we start with you telling me what your name is?” You prompted, your voice ticking up as if you were a caring teacher. He looked around, though seemingly unfazed. 

“Kim Taehyung.” He said after a while. You nodded and wrote it down on a crisp sheet of paper, careful not to get any of Mr. Joh’s blood on it. 

“Mr. Kim, you are an honored guest here. If you need anything, let me know. Until then,” You chuckled a little. “Enjoy your stay.”

Record Of Ragnarok - Review (Warning: Major Spoilers)

Shuumatsu no Walküre or, as it’s known in other countries, Records Of Ragnarok, is an Action Manga by Takumi Fukui, Shinya Umemura and Chika Aji that centers around the end of the world. As of now, it has 33 chapters, contained in 6 volumes.

Summary:

The story in a nutshell is that the gods have become fed up with humanity and decided to just fuck it and kill us to do whatever it is gods do in peace. The valkyrie Brunhilde objects rather strongly to this and invokes the Ragnarok clause to give humanity a chance to survive. The gods and the humans each provide 13 champions to fight for them and whichever side has the most victories after 13 rounds wins. If humanity wins, we keep living and if the gods win, we get unalived.

Pros:

The Premise. The stakes are high enough to get you pumped for each battle and it also leaves a lot of room for moral greyness on both sides. On one hand, we have the gods who strive to eradicate humanity and are almost unanimously presented as privileged jerkasses - but then you get characters like Heracles and Buddha who are technically on the divine side, but are shown to actually not support the plan to kill all humans. On the other hand we have humanity literally fighting to survive - but the manga never shies away from showing that humans are not all innocent cinnamon roles and even poses the question if humanity really deserves to survive sometimes. I mean, how much would you want to root for people who are having Jack the Ripper, a scumbag serial killer, fight as one of their champions? Speaking of which...

The champions. A few of you might have perked up at the mention of Jack the Ripper. As it turns out, whether a champion has been dead for years by the time of the story’s present doesn’t really matter: They get to participate all the same. Leading to a bunch of historical characters getting the chance to prove their badassery in the ring. Even better? This story follows the “all myths are true and all gods exist”-rule. You heard right: Every deity, no matter what religion or what part of the world they originated from, has the potential to become an anime villain! Ever wanted to see Lü Bu going at it with Thor? Well, now you can! Wanna see who’d win in a wrestling match between Raiden Tameemon and Shiva? Just read this manga!

The world-building. Record’s lore and backstories are detailed enough to have their own side-chapters and some of the characters’ pasts really make you feel for them. Wanna know how much? This manga, for a split-second at least, made me feel sorry for an unrepentant serial killer. The writing is just that good.

The art-style. It’s incredibly expressive and detailed, especially in the fight- scenes. The covers are beautiful, the character design is creative and gives every character their own, distinct style. And I know this may sound perv-y, but Aji Chika really knows how to draw naked bodies. Just... don’t pay too much attention to the anatomy.

The battles. As of the time I’m writing this, 4 out of 13 fights have been concluded and the fifth one is currently playing out. Each of the fights demonstrate so much personality and the match-ups are insanely cool. It’s never a closed case which combatant is going to win, each fight has so many twists and turns and the fighters themselves have a lot of chemistry with each other. Their motivations are, for the most part, understandable and fit the characters. If you can, check out the youtube - series by AmiasD Backup, you won’t regret it. The editing and the added background music really bring out the inherent epicness of the manga.

Cons:

The battles tend to suffer from, what i like to call, Anime Battle Syndrome. The action will screech to a halt at several points in order to let the characters monologue about their strategy, boast of their former accomplishments or just kinda... talk to each other for no good reason at all. Or have the background characters talk about something that just happened at length until you just want to shout “I know! I saw, I was there!”And the flashbacks detailing the combatants’ backstories are often just tedious. I know I praised them in my Pro-list, but no matter how cool a backstory is, if it comes smack in the middle of a hyped-up confrontation, it’s annoying! I don’t wanna see five pages of a character reminiscing how they once ate a bug when they were six, I wanna see two guys beat the shit out of each other to decide the fate of all of humankind! Just tell me the story after the battle, jfc.

The comedic aspects of the story are not handled well. I mean, I get it: In a story about the literal end of the world not having at least a few lighter moments would probably lead to the readers putting down the manga eventually because it just got too depressing. But the way Records handles it can cause some pretty big whiplash. One moment you’re on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails in anticipation of how a certain move in the current battle has played out - only to be confronted with a joke about how Ares is dumb, or one of the background characters making an inappropriate comment. Add to that the uncomfortably high number of sexist and sometimes rape-y jokes and you got a pretty yikes collection of failed attempts to implant humor. Speaking of which...

The manga has a really weird and uncomfortable relationship with women. They’re either oversexualised to the point of being nothing more than a walking, bouncing pair of breasts and hips, or side-lined in order to give all the spotlight to the male characters. For example: The valkyries. The valkyries in norse mythology are a people of badass warrior maidens. In the manga, it’s the valkyrie Brunhilde who kickstarts the tournament for humanities’ right to keep existing. She’s also the one who selects the human champions and prepares them for their upcoming battles by introducing them to their valkyrie-partners, their “Volund”, and she acts as an overseer for each round. She’s about the most involved female character you’ll get in this story. Her sisters, the other valkyries, are literally objectified to serve as weapons to the male champions. One of them is brutally forced to submit to her partner, in a scene that is eerily  reminiscent of assault. You’d think an amazon brigade as famous as the valkyries would be treated better than that, in a manga centered around fighting. Nope. They just get to be inanimate objects for the guys to wield. Oh, and if a champion dies, so does his Volund. So not only do the valkyries not get to fight themselves, they pay the price if their partner screws up. Lovely. Another glaring point I want to bring up: There are no female champions. On either side. We get shown a list of the human champions early on and all of them are male. All the divine combatants so far have been male, too. And there’s no indication that that’ll change in the future. Which is weird, because there is certainly no shortage of badass female characters that could have been used in the plot, both historical and mythological. But nope! Pure sausage fest is what we get instead. What’s that? You wanted to see Jeanne d’Arc or Ishtar or Sekmet or Lyudmila Pavlichenko or Anne Bonnie, or literally any of the dozen of amazing female fighters history and mythology have produced? Tough luck! Saving humanity is apparently a men-only sport.

Overall, Record Of Ragnarok is a story with an interesting premise and a plot rife with potential, but it just has too many flaws for me to declare it perfect or even good, to be honest.

For what it is, it’s an okay read. If you’re willing to muscle through the blatant misogyny prevalent in some parts of it. And the rather painful attempts at humor.

Political Alliance (if any): Despite being Imperial Jen doesn’t have any loyalty to the Empire and she does sympathize with the Stormcloaks cause, but it’s kind of hard to fully sympathize with them when they hate her. So, her political alliance is closer to the common people, the ones who are actually suffering from the war.

Strongest Skills: She’s deadly with destruction magic, mainly lighting and she has always had a knack for Necromancy though that’s more of a curse than a blessing. 

Strengths: Clever, strategist, She can be downright ruthless in battle, fearless, stubborn, will continue fighting until the end. 

Weaknesses: Her fearlessness often leads to recklessness, doesn’t really have survival skills, more often than not her emotions control her rather than vice versa.

Spouses? Flings? Lovers? Jen is pretty sex positive, she’s had a couple of flings here and there but only with people she actually trusts, so friends with benefit situations mostly, she’s not one to have a one night stand or hatefuck, but she’s always kept them at arms lengths and the minute feelings start she scatters. In her entire life she’s only be in love twice, once with her partner in the Vigilants who ended up betraying her and she ended up killing him, and then with Kaidan who she eventually marries.

Most Difficult Quest They’ve Been On? Pretty much any of the quests from the Vigilant Mod, the one where she had to fight Lamae fucked her up emotionally.

How Much Gold Are They Typically Carrying? Anywhere from 2 to 20000 Septims

How Do They Get Gold? Primarily through necromancy jobs, a lot of people will hire her for help getting rids of spirits, ghosts, etc... But Jen isn’t good at charging or saying no to people in need, so most of her income comes from overcharging rich people and jarls.

Are Werebeings and Vampires Vile Creatures or Simply Misunderstood? If you asked her this a couple of years ago she would have said, yes they are vile and need to be eradicated. Now that she’s no longer a vigilant and not under the influence of them she has a different opinion. Now she realizes the line between man and monster is a lot more blurred, now she sees herself more as the monster after all she’s done in the name of Justice. 

Do They Actively Hunt Dragons? Not really, they hunt her more often than not. 

Goals In Life? Help as many people as she can and hopefully do some good for once.

Deepest Regret? Killing innocent people under the guise of Stendarr’s mercy, and not being able to save Altano before it was too late.

Greatest Hope? She would never say this but she desperately wants a family. She craves the unconditional love that she has searched for all her life and was instead betrayed and her love used against her. 

Most Embarrassing Moment: She has screamed more than once encountering spiders. 

Flaws: Stubborn, hot headed, unforgiving, judgmental, isn’t very good at controlling her emotions which isn’t exactly good thing for a mage or a dragonborn, proud. 

Fears: Spiders and all other kinds of creepy crawlers especially things with more than two legs, betrayal, the dead (especially the ones that haunt her nightmares).

Pet Peeves? Being talked over, being bossed around (specifically by men)rich people just fucking existing.

How Would A Stranger Describe This Person? She’s got a bad case of Resting Bitch face, comes across as very cold and distant, just an unfeeling bitch.

Someone Close To Them? The opposite of that. She cares so much for her friends and will go to the ends of the Earth for them, it’s that quality that has gotten her in a lot of trouble. She helps whoever she can and has the worst case of bleeding heart syndrome. . 

How Do They Deal With Anger? Jen is a hot head, and when she does get angry she can be cruel and unrelenting. But luckily her anger fizzles out pretty quickly especially if she knows she wrong, so she will apologize and make things right if it’s someone she loves. But if you’re in the wrong, it’s gonna be hard to get her forgiveness back. 

How Do They Deal With Failure? She can take it hard, she’ll probably get moody and lash out, but deep down knows she’s really just angry with herself, eventually she cols off and learns from her mistakes and swears to not make them again. 

How Do They Deal With Loss of a friend or someone close? Jen’s friends are everything to her so losing them would wreck her, she wouldn’t be able to sleep or eat, or probably even let them go that easily, she would storm the gods if it meant saving someone she loved

Go Into The Bandit Filled Cave To Retrieve The Lost Amulet For Some Simpleton, or Tell Them Nah Bye? Depends is it someone desperate and downtrodden who couldn’t do it themselves? Yes. Someone entirely capable  of doing it themselves? probably not then, but all you really need to do is make up a sob story to appeal to her bleeding heart. 

Opinions on Daedra? She isn’t a vigilant anymore but she still knows Daedra are always a bad idea and would probably never side with them or trust them. Molag Bal though, she would storm Coldharbour just to kill him, she would find a way to kill daedra just to kill him.

    MY love STORY!! (2015)

  Kicking things off with a cuter, cuddlier entry, MY love STORY!! features a primary romantic pairing between Takeo Goda, a big and burly high school student with a penchant for judo, and Rinko Yamato, a petite girl who likes to bake. Their romance is initially complicated by Takeo assuming Rinko is attracted to his best friend, the traditionally handsome Makoto Sunakawa, but once this misconception is ironed out, My love STORY!! is an excellent if unconventional look at romance.

  MY love STORY!! does a great job dealing with issues of communication and consent while also skillfully navigating the conflicts caused by friendships and romantic rivalries. The series gets bonus points for Takeo being one of the sweetest, most pure-hearted protagonists in the genre, and for the positive qualities expressed through the relationships of other characters, such as Takeo's parents.

    Mysterious Girlfriend X (2012)

  On the other end of the spectrum we've got Mysterious Girlfriend X, a story about the unusual high school romance between Akira Tsubaki and Mikoto Urabe, a boy and a girl who share an almost psychic connection brought about by Akira consuming Mikoto's saliva on a regular basis. The central idea sounds kinda revolting at first, but if you give Mysterious Girlfriend X a chance, you'll discover that the show is way brainier and more sophisticated than the premise would appear at first blush.

    Princess Jellyfish (2010)

  If you like a little romance mixed with a gigantic portion of self-pity and Impostor Syndrome, then Princess Jellyfish is the show for you. Centered on a group of geeky ladies living in a rundown boarding house, Princess Jellyfish focuses on the unlikely love triangle that forms between Tsukimi Kurashita, an aspiring illustrator with severe self-confidence issues, Kuranosuke Koibuchi, a young man whose love of fashion and cross-dressing annoys his rich and powerful politician father, and Shu Koibuchi, Kuranosuke's strait-laced elder half-brother.

  Of course, no one is able to express their true feelings without coming across like a complete goober, but that's the charm of Princess Jellyfish. The original manga by Akiko Higashimura (available from Kodansha Comics) is also outstanding.

    Toradora! (2008 - 2009)

  The classic pattern in romance is often paraphrased as “boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again”, but Toradora! is more along the lines of “boy meets girl, girl attempts to pummel boy to death with a baseball bat, hijinx ensue”.

  In Toradora!, Ryuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka team up in an effort to pursue their mutual crushes, but the sharp-eyed boy with the gentle-demeanor and the pint-sized dynamo girl eventually fall in love despite initially aiming for relationships with other people. Along the way it plumbs the depths of adolescent romance with a surprising degree of pathos and nuance, so if you like your relationships feisty and complicated, give Toradora! a try.

  While Tomoko suffers from crippling social anxiety, she's also kind of a terrible person, and her conceptions of love and friendship have been terminally poisoned by a non-stop diet of otaku pop culture and online discourse. Despite everything, Tomoko just wants to be loved, but she's also her own worst enemy, and who among us can't identify with that?

    The Tatami Galaxy (2010)

  Sometimes it takes a Groundhog Day-like scenario for the so-called “nice guys” to realize that often they're not really the heroes of their own romantic epics, but rather they're the villains. The unnamed protagonist of The Tatami Galaxy loops through numerous college-level curricula, joining different clubs each time in an effort to find his ideal “raven-haired beauty” and to live the “rosy college life” of his dreams.

  Needless to say, nothing goes according to plan, and one of the highlights of The Tatami Galaxy is when “Watashi” and his partner-in-crime, Ozu, declare themselves to be “black Cupids” and subsequently dedicate their free-time to monkey-wrenching the dates of happy couples. It's perfect Valentine's Day viewing for the romantically disinclined.

  BONUS ROUND!

    Baki (2018)

  The 2018 Baki anime on Netflix is less interested in romance and more interested in taking big beefy dudes and smacking them together like a toddler playing with a handful of G.I. Joe action figures. When the baby-faced protagonist Baki and his girlfriend Kozue finally consummate their relationship, what results is both mind-blowing hilarity and head-scratching peculiarity as the audience is subjected to a galaxy brain-level X-ray vision vignette, Baki's new-found sex-blessed martial arts prowess, and a lecture from Yujiro Hanma about the birds and the bees. 11/10 stars, would “apply damage” again.

  Baki is available via streaming on Netflix.

    Well, there you have it: a selection of anime titles that look at the concepts of love and romance from a slightly askew angle. Some are life-affirming, some are off-beat but uplifting, and some of them aren't nearly so optimistic, but all in all it's a heaping helping of atypical romance, just in time for Valentine's Day.

Thoughts on Mirio Togata and a certain Quirk...

Y’all finally ready??? lets go

SPOILERS FOR ANYONE NOT HAVING READ THE OVERHAUL ARC

(also contains minor spoilers from other arcs? major at the very end for Overhaul arc)

time to,,,,, talk about why I, personally, don’t believe Mirio should be as deserving of OFA as everyone else thinks he is, why Sir Nighteye was in the wrong and everything about that.

Now I do want to,, say a few things first

yes, if you know me even a little bit you will know I am not the biggest fan of Mirio - he actually happens to be in my top 10 most disliked characters. HOWEVER I’m going to do my best to keep my thoughts neutral (to be fair, it was the fanbase that turned me off liking him)

the exact same thing goes for Sir Nighteye, but even worse - again, I won’t rag on him and I do understand why he acted the way he was, sorta

this post will honestly be a mess oof. but mostly I’m going to just dump all the thoughts I can; including how the timeline would change, characters personal feelings and such

THIS POST IS JUST MY OPINION THUS FAR! it might change when Season 4 of the anime airs, and I have extra time to go through the arc again. and of course, if you think Mirio does deserve OFA then thats perfectly fine too! everyone has their own opinions, I don’t expect this to change any minds.

Power-wise, Mirio is deserving - however, this is factoring his own quirk out of this

ALSO NOTE this post has no structure as I’ve said before so...oops?

Ok so to basically start this off; we see Mirio before he loses his quirk as a rather hardworking, bright and sunny student. And yes, first thoughts would be ‘he is the perfect choice’, and I see why people think so. His mastery of his own quirk is rather impressive; if anything, he might’ve been like All Might, able to master OFA much faster. Not to imagine how the quirk would mix with his own, and with future quirks.

But seeing the type of person Mirio is...someone who holds himself so proudly over how he controls his current quirk...I don’t think he would’ve accepted OFA to begin with. He’s already shown the instance of this in canon.

I understand the occurrence of this interaction wouldn’t be the same, but regardless it counts for how he might approach it all. He strikes me a lot like All Might; he’s already powerful enough with his quirk, he’s already got enough control - why would he need to accept this gift, regardless of the power it holds, or the sentiment?

He’s already standing in the ring.

Which also leads me to something All Might has said before, when confiding in Bakugou about why he chose Midoriya to be his successor of all people.

Again, I know the circumstances aren’t the exact same. But I feel like Mirio is the type of character who would prefer the quirk go to someone less fortunate, for he already has so much going for him.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. He might have accepted it, if for the sake of All Might and Sir Nighteye; but I would like to think he wouldn’t. Mirio also reminds me of Midoriya in that regard; caring for others over themselves.

This is also partially why I want to believe that Mirio wont get his quirk back. I feel like it would be so much better for his character to remain quirkless, and to become what Midoriya could’ve been if he had not gotten OFA. That would make his character arc really improve and be really good writing for him.

I’d also like to point out that whilst Mirio is very well much like All Might when it comes to personality and how he holds himself as a hero...one major thing brings them apart, this major part being something Midoriya excels in, and we’ve seen this is various instances.

Mirio...is hesitant.

He was hesitant when it came to their first meeting with Eri. Yes, he is a seasoned student, and knowing how dangerous Overhaul was - it was for the best that they let Eri go.

But you can’t always hesistate. Sometimes you have to jump in...and I feel like Mirio doesn’t have that drive, not like All Might and Midoriya. It was this exact same trait that caused All Might to choose. Midoriya leaped in to save Bakugou, consequences be dammed. I don’t think Mirio could do that.

And now...Sir Nighteye.

My distaste for Sir Nighteye is unique - and it might mostly stem from the fact that I am a Midoriya stan. 

Now, I do understand why he was firstly portrayed as he was - bitter towards our protagonist. His character is a rather complex one; he starts off as a rude man but eventually we see why and how he came to be that way, and what shaped him - All Might’s future.

Anyone being faced with the death of the Symbol of Peace, the strongest hero, and having no way to change it would be unnerved. Sir Nighteye was scared, and his reaction is justified...in a way, considering he worked with All Might himself. The two were work partners, and it was this uncertain future that split them apart.

Sir Nighteye had every reason to grow apart from All Might, he only wanted to try protecting him. Being one of the only heroes who knew about One For All, he also wanted to make sure it was passed to the right successor, which is understandable.

But Sir Nighteye, I feel, approached the situation in the wrong way. We see that very clearly when Midoriya has to fight him in order to be accepted as his intern.

This scene just...rubs me the wrong way when it came to Sir Nighteye’s character. There were plenty of other ways he could’ve tried to deal with this.

He doesn’t have to accept Midoriya, no, but he should’ve put his bitter resentment aside. He only knows Midoriya as the kid who breaks his bones with his quirk. He doesn’t know how much Midoriya had to fight to control this quirk - and even then, he still can’t control it.

But also Midoriya’s expression when he finds out Mirio was ‘first in line’;

Midoriya still likely suffers from something akin to Impostor’s Syndrome - again, various hints have been placed throughout the manga/series itself. That’s not surprising.

Sir Nighteye’s dismissal of him wielding OFA was awful.

Sir Nighteye shouldn’t have a choice in the first place. That’s also what annoys me.

OFA is not his quirk...I don’t understand why he went and trained a successor for a quirk he can’t pass, for a quirk that isn’t his to decide. All Might isn’t the best teacher...but Sir Nighteye didn’t trust him, obviously. He didn’t trust the Symbol of Peace to be competent enough to find someone worthy.

That ‘someone worthy’ ended out being Midoriya. But Sir Nighteye still blatantly went ahead with this ‘great idea’.

Sir Nighteye as a character does improve - by the end of the Overhaul Arc, we know he has come to terms with Midoriya - has spoken about him, ect. But the fact he gets killed off right after still left the sour taste in my mouth of his first introduction.

Not to mention his quirk; I understand that Sir Nighteye was frightened by All Might’s death, but doesn’t his quirk allow him to show the future? They could’ve looked to see who All Might chose; and they could’ve risen that successor together.

All the hardship and bitterness could’ve easily been avoided.

And now, y’all, lets go through the current canon events and dissect how everything would’ve turned out if Mirio had gotten OFA instead;

(leaving off from the standpoint where Midoriya still saved Bakugou from the sludge villain, but was never offered OFA)

The Entrance Exam: Uraraka possibly would’ve been seriously worse off than in canon. We don’t know if the teachers would’ve stopped the robot in time for nothing serious to occur - since no one would be there to punch the robot.

Quirk Assessment Test: not terribly bad, but a student possibly would’ve been expelled - even several.

USJ: At the very least, Tsu and Mineta would be dead. Aizawa and All Might would also possibly be dead, and perhaps even other students. The League would’ve been much more successful, and the media would be even more down UA’s throats.

Sports Festival: Todoroki maybe wouldn’t have indulged to anyone about his backstory; he would’ve gone on to use only his ice. I don’t believe many of the other students who he’d consider ‘strong enough’ would try to encourage him like Midoriya did during their battle. It’d also be safe to say that because of this, he wouldn’t visit his mother afterwards.

Hero Killer: Stain: Due to Midoriya not interning with Gran Torino, and seeing as the events with Tensei would still occur, Tenya would still go after the villain with revenge. It’d likely that both he and Native would die by Stain since there is no Midoriya or Todoroki to intervene.

Final Exams: Nothing too terrible happens here - but its likely that Bakugou would be off worse.

Training Camp: Bakugou and Todoroki, perhaps even more students would’ve been kidnapped by the League. Kouta likely would’ve been killed by Muscular, and still would’ve hated heroes.

Kamino Ward: AFO vs All Might still occurs - but the outcome very well could’ve ended differently. The League might’ve gotten away with the students they kidnapped, and All Might might lose due to the fact he was holding back due to Bakugou in canon.

Provisional License Exam: Again, not that bad - some of the students might’ve not passed alongside Bakugou and Todoroki. If Toga still sneaks in, she either would’ve gotten no blood or the blood of someone else.

Overhaul/Internship Arc: Very possibly Eri might’ve never been saved. The prophecy with All Might not be twisted. Sir Nighteye still might die...and Mirio could’ve still, very likely, gotten shot. Where does that leave him? Probably without both his original quirk and One For All. The villains would win.

And that’s only if UA still remained open after earlier events. UA would be at the very real possibility of closing after the events of the USJ, allowing at least two students and possibly one or two teachers to die.

Midoriya, as a character, has made such an impact that the storyline would be vastly different. Several characters changed for the better because of his presence in the storyline with OFA. So many characters had the real chance of being badly hurt or killed if Midoriya hadn’t interfered in some way, shape or form.

He can’t interfere if he doesn’t have OFA.

Midoriya possess more of a hero’s ideals than Mirio when it comes to several,,, things in general. Mirio doesn’t really possess what Midoriya does, and would almost feel like an All Might copy.

Midoriya is truly working to make this quirk his own...Mirio would’ve had a better time, but we never would’ve seen the struggle our lovely green protagonist went through. The pain, the blood, the tears...Mirio wouldn’t have that - at least, not to the same extent.

And that is why Mirio doesn’t suit being the MC, or being the holder of OFA.
