1 - Are you named after anyone?

Ruby: All of my family's names all have alliteration in them! I'm Ruby Raleigh, and both my moms have pretty alliterative names too!

Cobalt: I don't think so. It's just Cobalt Azure Zaffre. I don't really think I named Turquoise in any particular way; it just seemed like a suitable alias.

Ruby: ...You have a middle name???

Cobalt: ...Yes??

Ruby: ...Dude, NO one has a middle name!

Cobalt: Well I do. "Azure".

Ruby: But that's AZURE and you're BLUE??

Cobalt: Ruby. I have heterochromia. I'm BUILT DIFFERENT.

2 - When was the last time you cried?

Ruby: Pshh, when I was like, 5! I... accidentally crushed a caterpillar. :(

Cobalt: D-Don't ask.

3 - Do you have kids?

Ruby: HELL no. I'm fresh into tourney fighting! I don't have the time to take care of kids. ...Also I'm pretty bitchless.

Cobalt: ...No, but it'd be nice to have one. Someday.

Ruby: Only when someone is being a little BITCH. When they DESERVE IT.

Cobalt: It's a little hard to tell. I'm veryyy bad at making it obvious. So I don't really try too often.

5 - What's the first thing you notice about people?

Ruby: I AM the person you notice. NOTICE ME. PAY ATTENTION TO ME. I just like talkin' to people!!

Cobalt: Their eyes. I want to know what a person's intention's are first, before interacting with them. It's very difficult to be comfortable within crowds.

6 - What's your eye color?

Ruby: Azure blue! My soul color is red though, so my eyes glow red with strong emotion! Or Paladin powers. 'Cause that's a thing I have to handle now.

Cobalt: ...It's complicated.

Ruby: ...Why would it be complicated?

Cobalt: My eyes are naturally turquoise, but that's not my soul color. Sometimes they'll glow cyan, sometimes they glow blue. Sometimes they glow both. So in total, I can have four different eye colors.

Ruby: ...Your eyes are strobe lights.

7 - Scary movies or happy endings?

Ruby: I love scary movies! Me and Turqbalt used to watch horror movies together, but he'd get too scared. So I stopped.

Cobalt: ...What she said. Happy endings, please.

Ruby: He used to hide his face and cry into pillows during the scary moments!

Cobalt: ENOUGH.

8 - Any special talents?

Ruby: I love parkour! I'm already SUPER fast as a hare fighter, so doing parkour is my daily excersize!

Cobalt: I'm like a hueman freezer. My ice powers make my body naturally cold, so lots of my friends will just tell me to hold their drinks for them so they'll still be cold.

9 - Where were you born?

Ruby: Right here in Neocity! Born and raised!

Cobalt: It's one of the border cities between Celestia and the Hyperion Republic. We moved to Neocity when I was about 8.

10 - What are your hobbies?

Ruby: Music-making! I'm pretty good at guitar and ukelele, I have some experience in piano... me, Blaze, Rina, and Turq used to play gigs at the Silver Spade! We get free drinks there too! ...None of us are of age yet, so I typically just get coffee from there.

Cobalt: I collect knives and swords.

11 - Have you any pets?

Ruby: No :( Me and Jay are too lazy to cook, let alone own a pet.

Cobalt: he’s so cute it’s shiro my dog being such a cute baby prince 😍 he’s a samoyed!

12 - What sports do you/have you played?

Ruby: Track! Also, technically tourney fighting is a sport I guess?

Cobalt: Yeah, I'm not one for typical sports. Tourney fighting is a little more dramatic.

Ruby: 5'9!

Cobalt: 5'11.

Ruby: Jay, Blaze, and Tarum are all 6'0! Rose is 4'11 though.

Cobalt: Tiny hands... my only weakness.

14 - Favorite subject in school?

Ruby: I'm assuming we can't say "field training".

Cobalt: Yeah, no. Field training's basically tournament fighting beta.

Ruby: I'm not much of the school type. Cs get degrees! Hmm... Maybe art? I enjoy designing clothing for all my friends, and my moms are pretty supportive in all my creative endeavors!

Cobalt: ...Lunch I guess.

Ruby: Tourney fighting, obviously!

Cobalt: Well, I thought it was tournament fighting. I think. But then I got my arm cut off, so I had to stop for a while. Lots of people can be mean to champion tournament fighters... I'm not sure if I should be coming back. Can I even come back? I mean, I lost a bit of my lightning powers... God, I wouldn't even know-

I’m so glad I came back to this blog.

I just turned 24 last month and dealt with some hard truths and big emotions. I couldn’t keep holding in these feelings about what I was really chasing at the end of the day.

I love art, I love being bisexual. I love being able to embrace myself through my sexuality without having to make straight up porn. All these alt pages is cool but to me it was more than just showing off my body it’s for appreciating the beautiful structure that is the “hueman”.

When I post myself it’s not so y’all can just say “let’s fuck” it’s for yall to see how much obstacles it’s taken me to overcome so i can find the confidence to post.

I use to hate myself and now I look in this mirror and love myself flaws and all. I can’t keep wait till I get the “perfect” body, look, clothes, team, etc. I have to embrace myself now.

ok, here’s my shadow high skin color headcanon:

everyone in the rainbow high universe aren’t actually humans. they’re huemans (HA HA heheh…. anyways..) which is a species that is pretty much just… their selling point.

huemans are humanoid creatures that each have a distinct color. there’s a shadow variant, which just means the hueman has unnatural skin color. boom! that’s what shadow high is. just filled with shadow variants.

there’s a chance some huemans change from natural to unnatural skin tones, either they were born with a natural skin tone, and it changed to an unnatural one, or they were born with an unnatural skin tone, and it changed to a natural one. or they were just born with the skin tones they have now. their environment might affect whether their skin tone changes from natural to unnatural or vice versa, thus shadow high having mostly unnatural skin tones.

Blossoming Style

I am not Erykah Badu, albeit I am greatly inspired by her entire energy, I didn't come into the world completely formed around my sense of fashion and style. My inclinations were hidden in the substrate of my subconscious and as I became more myself it slowly rose to my conscious mind and outward facing public persona.

The one thing that really cements this is seeing how pieces I have had for a long time have changed in how I present and wear them. Its such an organic process and it happens so subtlety that its hard to notice the changes. I had recently come across a trove of images from 2007, that is seventeen years ago, lets say that again, seventeen years ago, nearly two decades! I have put together collages showing these pieces then, and how I rock them now.

This demonstration is so important for those just developing their personal style, its good to see that most of us don't just arrive at our destination and that there are many stops along the way to get our LOOKS to where we want them to be. I am still jealous of people in their twenties who seemed to come out fully formed, for some of them its access to wealth that allows this exploration and others are just naturally creative using what little they have to put together great things.

2007/2013

On the left I am wearing this vintage polyester seventies shirt with one of my necklaces bought from a Brooklyn-based artisan. Off-hand I can't remember what else I was wearing but we will focus on how I later paired this shirt with some yellow jeans, tan suede boots, a bunch of bangles and another Brooklyn-born necklace with amber and ivory. I am also noting my go-to bracelet this orange-beaded piece that I bought in Miami that fell apart a few years ago, I still have the beads, just need to meet another jewelry maker.

There was a nice refining of my style, earlier I would be more simple in my approach to accessories, later I would layer more colors and textures with a look. I am also wearing Warby Parker eyeglasses in later image feeling more comfortable utilizing my glasses as an additional accessory and not just a eyesight enhancing tool.

2007/2022

I snatched up this Jean Paul Gaultier haute courtier top at the Century 21 on 86th Street in Brooklyn way prior to its closing. I think this was my second Gaultier top, I really loved this one because on me it felt very African. In two-thousand seven I paired it with these wooden beads purchased at Atlantic Antic. My hair is also notable in this first image because my locs were curly, a style I haven't really rocked in years.

In two-thousand twenty-two, similar to the first set of images I have really leaned into accessories. I am pretty sure in the first shot I was wearing a pair of premium denim jeans, and my go-to Puma Black shoes that had similar color as my beads with these golf-shoes sole.

In the modern take with the Gaultier top I am pairing my newly acquired wide-legged pants from Nubian Hueman a company I think based out of DC that was vending at AfroPunk. Italian boots from Corrente I had bought online from an LA boutique. One of the beautiful neck pieces I had acquired in Accra in Ghana from a local artisan. A scarf by Zhuzh also copped at AfroPunk bundled around my neck in a way I had observed a friend wearing his. A silver cuff with a red precious stone I got while in Jaipur - India. An orange Coach ranger pack from their outlet, eyeglasses from Brooklyn-based Black-woman owned EENY Eyewear and this cobalt clip on earring of my grandmother, that I later gifted to my niece after this photoshoot. Last but not least lets notice that I did a reverse French braid with my locs just for this mini-shoot.

Whew, a lot going on here, but as you can see even with out over-layering I have learned how to really elevate a look but also tie the pieces together with my unique aesthetic which is clearly very African, Black and urban inspired.

2007/2022

This coffee-bean rayon shirt from Mardana made in NYC, I purchased in a boutique in Chelsea of all places. On my neck a jade necklace probably from some local vendor, my hair in an updo and I can see this is before I lost my watch in Elmina and one of those rubber rainbow bracelets left over from the pride parade.

In the twenties I bought back those wooden bead of mine, now suspended on copper-wire by a local artist I had re-string them for me. My go-to Havaianas the only open-toed foot wear I will wear. And the pants I purchased from the late Harriet's Alter Ego which had a shop on Flatbush, anyone knowing her work would know these pant's patchworks were the mastery of Hekima who is still bringing her beautiful pieces to the world.

I am wearing a brass bracelet gifted to me by an actress on this Broadway show I was working on and a cuff from Benin that I purchased in Accra. Once again finishing off this casual look with Warby Parker glasses.

2012/2022

Wow finally a piece from Gureje who used to be my go-to Black designer for pieces to wear to my gallery openings. I had him custom make this suit for me back in two-thousand twelve for a string of openings I had. A one-night only solo exhibition at Soho House courtesy of Bombay Sapphire, then my debut in Art Basel Miami courtesy of Rush Arts Gallery. I also had good company because the late Melvin Van Peebles also had one of these made for himself.

In twelve I barely had any shirts to wear with this suit and wore a linen blue and white short-sleeved shirt with it. As you can see I wasn't even at a place where I could fully realize my beauty in this suit that I need to be at my high-school weight to wear. I would also feature this suit at the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Gala in 2014 where I slayed!

But I want to focus on how I bought this look back in 2022, pairing this very upscale suit with sneakers from Diverge a turquoise turtleneck from Paul Frederick a beautiful brass necklace with turquoise beads from a shop on Instagram and tortoise colored glasses from Warby Parker.

I took something classic and made it urban, fun and modern. I put together the ensemble in mere seconds and was getting compliments all day as I was out and about in Coney Island with my niece.

Not going to wax poetic about these African fabric throwaway pants that I purchased on a roadside in Accra. I say throwaway because they literally cost little to nothing and were only probably meant to be worn a few times and thrown away but from 2013 to 2022 these main one of my favorite warm-weather bottoms. Versatile in being able to be paired with just about anything.

This is my one takeaway for everyone who is developing their personal style, have fun, and most importantly always be YOU in whatever you wear and you too can be iconic in your lifetime.

10/10 was an anniversary date I mentioned here.

There is no platform on social media, that I currently interface with humans.

I'm in SOL creation.

Zero lingering care nor desire to align with those from a bandwidth I only now visit from time to time.

To be CREATRIX - not as some label of definition, but rather a field of CREATION ITSELF UNHINDERED BY ANY 9THER.

In this field, as all amalgamated expressions into just one HUEman woman's vision, being understood or INNERstood becomes not only potential, but certainty.

How else can One's field of vision for self be truly pure if fixated on ANY other's vision?!

When it became evident that my envisioned, then materialized Earthly endeavors usually included creating portals that Others inevitably would enjoy, I had to accept a few things.

My vision has never been aligned with others. I've been autist / neurodivergant as long as I've been around, no labels available for old birds like me.

Didn't have them. Don't want them now.

I do innerstand the bandwidth of the free flyers, indigo first wavers.

Gen X means a thing. We are born for a time to break shit apart to allow for more.

Folks got wrapped up in spirituality and 5d. It's bigger than some christian concepts of sin or god or angels and demons.

I'm a cusper of gen X. But I was raised in the heart of the madness and KNOW deeply all the truth of those born in space of boomers into X.

We were for real left behind. And by the time a few decades went by as I raised children, the pendulum swung so far the other way ... The world is hardly recognizable to me now.

When others feel we have to be more easy with the youngsters, or give them less challenges as we become ONE or whatever...

I fly different.

I do not aim to do one thing that supports continued oppression.

Celebrating Black History Month at the Chattanooga Zoo

We're continuing to celebrate Black History Month by highlighting Black individuals who have and are continuing to connect people of color to nature, around the country and here in Chattanooga! Read on to learn more about their work--

Paving better paths for people of color in the outdoors is central to Rue Mapp's work. In 2009, she created a national non-for-profit organization called Outdoor Afro. This organization is community based and celebrates, inspires, and educates Black connections and leadership by learning about African American history related to outdoor recreation, nature, and conservation.

This work is extremely similar to the work that Shawanna Kendrick has been doing here in Chattanooga. She is the founder and CEO of The Hiking, Healing, and Outdoors Life (H2O Life). In 2019, Shawanna invited a group of friends to try something new - go on a hike together. This outdoor experience provided the safe space she had been seeking for Black women to “connect and reset”. After this first trip, the hikes continued and expanded to include more women of color with the goal of providing continued mental and physical healing through nature, personal connections, and a break from life’s regular pressures.

Barriers for freed Black workers in the 1800s were a lot more aggressively racially charged than modern barriers. There were “Black codes'' which severely limited the rights of free Black people and made unreasonable requirements for them in order to work. Soloman Brown, therefore, overcame a lot to become the first Black employee at the Smithsonian in 1829. While there, he worked to become a self-educated scientist and naturalist, educator, illustrator and mapmaker, poet, and political leader, and was seemingly recognized as the first Black environmentalist.

Today, big strides have been made to continue the work started by figures such as Solomon Brown, but some of the effects of the laws years ago have lingered. Clark Brewer has made it his purpose to mitigate those effects for people of color here in Chattanooga. In 2017, Clark co-founded Bridge Chattanooga, an after-school program that focused on taking kids of color on outdoor adventures such as hiking, canoeing, and caving. This eventually led him to launch his own non-profit, Huemans Outdoors, where he has worked to expand this outreach through guided excursions for youth and adults alike.

Underwing Challenge Day 3

Hello again! We’re on day 3 of the challenge now. If you’re unfamiliar, here’s the post explaining it.

3) Who is your main cast? Describe as many of your OCs as you can cram into one post.

I’ve been meaning to do character intros, so I actually have some picrews saved up! You can find the picrew I used here.

Top row: Shiloh, Canel, and Schro.

Bottom row: Syxion, Frank, and Paze Duhl (in his only non-costume outfit.

This post came out to be kinda long, so descriptions are under the cut.

Shiloh’s the main character with a penchant for staunch rebellion. She didn’t even know about the Promotion Wars prior to starting them, she just got really angry at one of her managers. She puts up a stereotypical rough exterior and has the sailor’s mouth to go with it, but in reality she’s a sweetheart that isn’t great at conveying her emotions. She’s known around the city for dressing real tacky and usually wears a tiger stripe suit she calls her “battle suit”. While she’s pretty straight forward and ferocious in a fight, her power is quite the opposite. She can produce a single string made of pure magic that can’t be broken, can extend indefinitely, and even listens to some commands like “retract” or “tighten”.

Canel is a Thae, which is what happens if you gives elves the bottom half of a satyr. Canel studies more traditional magic than the others, who got their magic as happenstance. Canel specializes in heat exchange, meaning they can cool or heat an object with a source of magic as a cost. What do they use this for you ask? Making pastries with their father or experimenting with coffee. Canel’s the most naive character by far, and fully believe that Duhl had their best interests at heart. Luckily. Shiloh was there to help even though Canel doesn’t like her methods.

Schro is the resident chaotic neutral catboy. He’s won many Promotions in the past but never leaves his position as the mailboy. He merely loves sowing fear and discord amongst Duhl elites. He likes to prank everyone and anyone, with him saving the more malicious pranks for the few that can actually anger him. If you can’t find him at any given point in the day, he’s most likely pulling a prank against Shiloh. He just absolutely loves her over-the-top reactions. His power occurs when he or anyone else opens a container near him. He says a “random” object appears but it always seems to benefit him.

Syxion is a Chromine, otherwise known as a color-coded dragon person. He was previous a world champion boxer before losing a title match and all the fame with it. He works as Duhl as a janitor and once the Promotion Wars kicks off, he makes sure to establish peace between all the lower ranked people. While he does agree that Duhl needs to be dismantled, he does not agree with Shiloh’s violent methods. They come to a truce when he learns of the true horrors of Duhl and become allies even though they stand at odds with each other often. His power is to construct a barrier that locks his opponent and himself in an arena until there is a clear winner.

Frank was a Hueman like Shiloh, emphasis on was. Frank is a zombie who’s died at least twice, usually referred to as a Twicedead. Unfortunately, he has amnesia due to a wound on the back of his head that doesn’t heal so he can’t remember his past lives. He’s got all the slimy charisma of a used car salesman but does occasionally say some inspiring things. He then follows that up by getting wrapped up in get-quick-rich schemes. Zombies are made by having a ton of Gift magic inside of them, which is the domain that life and death fall under. Typically, Zombies get at least one, sometimes two lives. However, Frank has a colossal amount of Gift magic since his second death that makes him retroactively immortal and also causes flowers and tree branches to grow out of him occasionally. It doesn’t hurt him, if you’re wondering. Just a bit of tightness in the joints. He grew an apple out of his elbow one time. For reasons he can’t remember, the group found him locked up in Duhl’s basement, forced to wash dishes until the end of time. He could’ve left at any time, he just happened to forget he could remove his handcuffed arm.

Paze Duhl is the engimatic CEO of Duhl. Often showing up in themed costumes along with his henchman, no one quite understands what he really does except enforce company policies. Despite being relatively young, he’s the reason Duhl is as lucrative as it is. He loves to taunt as well as praise and Shiloh is his main target now. He’s even offered her a straight shot to the upper echelon of Duhl; a group of the strongest executives only called the Board. She instantly refused and nearly challenged him on the spot but Paze is the CEO of Duhl, so he should be the strongest person in the building, right? No one knows the answer and he’s not willing to share.
