Research question and personal code book
Research question:
Does consuming beer or wine on a regular basis affect your social interactions?
Literature review
Once i read all of the NESARC code book the subject that most interesed me was the consumption of alcohol, specifically beer and wine. According to articles on Google Scholar regarding alcohol consumption, this are two of the most consumed alcoholic beverages worldwide. Different levels of alcohol, especifically ethanol, have the effect to inhibit signaling molecule or neurotransmitter that carry out diffrent aspects of the brain that can affect an individuals behavior for an undefined period of time, depending on the individuals.
While drinking can alter the state of mind for limited periods of time, carrying it out repeatedly can start to affect the core behavior of an individual regarding his social interaction. It can restrict interchage or promote it. Since both wine and beer have different alcohol percentages per volume the effect on an individual drinking the same amount for both beverages can show divergent results.
Code book and variables
The first choosen topic for the asignment was How often drank beer in the last 12 months (S2AQ5B) and How often drank wine in the last 12 months (S2AQ6B). This topics were chosen since they are the most common alcoholic beverages and because here resides most of the data regarding drinking. The second topic selected was if Thinking about/being in/avoid social situation upset you/made you feel uncomfortable (S7Q161), since its known that the consumption of alcoholic beverages can alter ones social interaction.

Alcohol Abuse and Suicidal Behavior
T"Drink because you are happy, but never because you are miserable." — G.K. Chesterton
Data Set -  The best suitable data set for my research topic from the suggested five is the GAPMINDER.
Variables to be used -
Alcohol Consumption (alcconsumption)
Suicide Per 100th (suicideper100th)
Research Question - Is Alcohol Consumption associated with suicide rates?
Hypothesis -   The purpose of the study is to estimate the proportion of alcohol abuse and dependence among suicides, and to compare the incidence of alcohol abuse and dependence documented by authorities.
Literature Review -
Abstract -   Suicide is an escalating public health problem, and alcohol use has consistently been implicated in the precipitation of suicidal behavior. It is well recognized that both acute and chronic alcohol use are among the major behaviorally modifiable factors that are associated with suicidal behavior. Alcohol abuse may lead to suicidality through disinhibition, impulsiveness and impaired judgment, but it may also be used as a means to ease the distress associated with committing an act of suicide. There is suggestive evidence that binge drinking pattern, i.e. excessive consumption of strong spirits results in quicker and deeper level of intoxication, increasing the propensity for alcohol-related suicide. The goal of the study is to find the association between these two parameters while considering other’s research work in context.
Review of Literature -  Globally, alcohol consumption has increased in recent decades, with all or most of that increase occurring in developing countries. Alcohol consumption has health and social consequences via intoxication (drunkenness), dependence (habitual, compulsive and long-term drinking), and biochemical effects. In addition to chronic diseases that may affect drinkers after many years of heavy use, alcohol contributes to traumatic outcomes that kill or disable at a relatively young age, resulting in the loss of many years of life to death or disability. There is increasing evidence that, aside from the volume of alcohol consumed, the pattern of the drinking is relevant for health outcomes. Overall, there is a causal relationship between alcohol consumption and more than 60 types of diseases and injuries. Alcohol is estimated to cause about 20–30% of cases of oesophageal cancer, liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, homicide, epilepsy and motor vehicle accidents. Alcohol had been used by most people in the Americas, Europe, Japan, and New Zealand, with smaller proportions in the Middle East, Africa, and China ( Degenhardt L, Chiu WT, Sampson N, Kessler RC, Anthony JC, Angermeyer M, Bruffaerts R, de Girolamo G, Gureje O, Huang Y, Karam A, Kostyuchenko S, Lepine JP, Mora ME, Neumark Y, Ormel JH, Pinto-Meza A, Posada-Villa J, Stein DJ, Takeshima T, Wells JE. Toward a global view of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and cocaine use: findings from the WHO World Mental Health Surveys. PLoS Med. 2008;5:e141). The existence of a link between alcohol use and suicide was known to Kraepelin ( Kraepelin E. Psychiatrie. Ein Lehrbuch für Studirende und Aerzte, 6. vollständig umgearbeitete Auflage. Zweiter Band, Klinische Psychiatrie. Verlag von Johann Ambrosius Barth; Leipzig, Germany: 1899). This link has been advanced more convincingly since the mid-1960s ( Stenback A, Achte KA, Rimon RH. Physical disease, hypochondria, and alcohol addiction in suicides committed by mental hospital patients. Br. J. Psychiatry. 1965;111:933–937) and confirmed in recent years ( Bernal M, Haro JM, Bernert S, Brugha T, de Graaf R, Bruffaerts R, Lepine JP, de Girolamo G, Vilagut G, Gasquet I, Torres JV, Kovess V, Heider D, Neeleman J, Kessler R, Alonso J. Risk factors for suicidality in Europe: results from the ESEMED study. J. Affect Disord. 2007;101:27–34) Most research on alcohol use and suicide has focused on suicidal ideation or attempted suicide ( Flensborg-Madsen T, Knop J, Mortensen EL, Becker U, Sher L, Gronbaek M. Alcohol use disorders increase the risk of completed suicide—irrespective of other psychiatric disorders. A longitudinal cohort study. Psychiatry Res. 2009;167:123–130) rather than completed suicide, because of the methodological difficulties involved in investigating completed suicide. However, it is important to realize that, despite some overlap, suicide attempters and completers show demographic, personality, and clinical differences (Conner KR, Duberstein PR. Predisposing and precipitating factors for suicide among alcoholics: empirical review and conceptual integration. Alcohol Clin. Exp. Res. 2004;28:6S–17S).  To begin with the analysis/study, the data from various sources and of various region needs to be compiled and than the summary of findings and the variables structure are balanced to achieve and efficient and meaningful output.

Urban Soul Revisited
What you may see at first is a smartly dressed man sitting on, well lets revisit that later. Upon further exploration you may also notice this is a Black man, with locs wearing pants from Prospect Heights designer Jimi Gureje, shoes by Cole Haan, a shirt he hand selected the fabric for on his 2011 trip to Ghana and had made locally on his first visit to the mother continent, finishing off the outfit a turquoise necklace he pulled from his paternal grandmothers costume jewelry and eye glasses by the socially conscious Warby Parker.
Now back to where he is sitting, he is situated on a left over stoop in DUMBO you can’t see this but all he hears is a cacophony of construction sounds, what he doesn’t see is the graffiti, murals and wheat pasting that used to draw him to this coastal part of Brooklyn. What you can’t smell is the gentrification of a borough he has lived over twenty years in, a borough he reps harder then its former president Marty Markowitz, and one he rarely leaves unless traveling abroad.
You would think the Urban Soul he was portraying was a commentary on the special style of fashion worn by Brooklyn fashionistas, or maybe it could be something else like the life blood of neighborhoods he has walked for over two decades and construction and conversion has weeded out the ethnic appeal of this cities neighborhoods in exchange for a regurgitated sterilized Manhattan step cousin of the ‘new segregation’ known as gentrification.
Let’s go a little deeper because what we perceive isn’t always what is true.
“He” is actually, a non-binary same gender loving Black person and even though he may respond to male pronouns she will also respond to female ones, he long ago accepted that she was what the indigenous people called two-spirited and e embraces the duality of es nature and the natural conflict of es soul. And like the doorless stoop e sits on e is all but invisible to people disappearing in a country that would readily imprison or choke the life out of em and discard em in the street.
You can’t think about a city and not think about what makes that city special which is its people, people are the spirit of any city and should be embraced not erased, so you can have your artesian tea and farmer markets to squabble over the best organic tomatoes but you also need to have the mentally unstable homeless man who sits outside of the Bodega begging for spare change. This is what makes up a cities Urban Soul.
Part of es Colombusing Series, a commentary on gentrification, change and being invisible in one of the most visible cities on the planet.
[Photo by Brown Estate - As I re-read this I remember getting into some kind of dispute with the curator of this exhibition Ramona Candy, whom is also an artist. She was missing the significance of the use of pronouns in this artist statement and how I deliberately presented one gender identity and switched to another near the end. Albeit this was before where we are today when folks literally list their pronouns in the footer of the LinkedIn profiles. I wanted to make a point here and I pushed her to respect my very elaborate Spivak pronouns which even for me are not easy to use.
Its such a commentary about timing, but it also speaks to my artistry I wanted to send a clear message to the viewers of the work that I am not just what you see, there's something below the surface which I want recognized, albeit it started with the curator I wanted it ended with the consumer of the work. This is what art is challenging the viewer in ways they hadn't thought of before or realized.]

Kanya King Talks Inspiration, Mentorship, Entrepreneur Tips and the MOBO’s Mission
By Cookie Gureje
Tumblr media
Photo by Cookie Gureje, shows video chat with media trust mentors, trainees and Kanya King.
As the founder of the renown MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards, Kanya King is a strikingly humble and grateful entrepreneur. Kanya dropped a lot of gems through out the online ‘zoom’ press junket organised by Media Trust. It was clear that her resilience has played a huge role in building the MOBO Awards. Among many things, she candidly discussed her inspirations, offered advice on starting a business venture and revealed some MOBO projects in the works!
Born to a Ghanian father and Irish mother, she cites her resilient mother - of nine children- as an inspiration for her. King has a remarkable career as an entrepreneur. One might wonder if she had a mentor who nurtured her entrepreneurial spirit?
‘I didn’t have mentors, I didn’t have contacts, I didn’t have money, but I had so much more’
Kanya makes it clear that having a mentor is really beneficial, but reveals she didn’t ‘have mentors’ to nurture her entrepreneurial talents. ‘I didn’t have contacts, I didn’t have money, but I had so much more’ such as ‘stamina and the drive’ she says. It’s refreshing to hear that she believed in her own judgement and made the most out of the resources she had. It is a reminder that hard work pays off. At a young age, she had a lot of responsibilities, ‘I’ve always had to juggle things, I took any job I could get[…]I was trying to bring up my son. It hasn’t been easy. It’s been hard but the rewards have been worthwhile. The story ends well!’.

She has successfully brought urban music to the masses for over 20 years, through the televised MOBO Awards which reaches more than 400 million viewers. The MOBO brand has remained relevant throughout, and this is an accomplishment for an entrepreneur. She gave some advice for any budding entrepreneur who wishes to start their own venture...
‘I had to build up resilience’
As an entrepreneur who paved her own path in the media industry, Kanya admits that ‘people can tear you down very easily’ but that has never bothered her because she built up her ‘resilience’. To have the ability to recover from difficulties and move forward is an advantageous quality in any industry.
She encourages us to ‘find our own mastermind circle of people’ who you can trust, because no one truly gets to the top on their own. And look out for a niche or gap in the market. Indeed, Kanya spotted that there was a gap in the market for a mainstream platform that celebrated black music, and solved it.
‘We have moved beyond music[...]and we are working towards other formats to showcase black culture’
In the past, the successful MOBO awards has faced some criticism from those who think it has deviated from its mission. Kanya affirms that the mission has remained the same. The mission has always been to uplift music of black origin and urban culture. The MOBO’s has, ‘moved beyond music - film, fashion, theatre’ and will be moving ‘towards other formats to showcase black culture’. Back in 2018, the forward thinking organisation announced its expansion into movie production and more expansive projects.
When asked about her favourite genre of music, Kanya mentions that she has an extensive music library and can’t pick a definite favourite! Different artists and songs have the power to speak to us at different times.
After a 2 year hiatus to work on new initiatives, many fans have anticipated the award show's return this year. However, COVID -19 has meant that the exact date of the award ceremony is uncertain. 'People's safety is priority - but we're used to problems from the past', it is clear that the MOBOs is resilient.
You can watch the MOBO's weekly Instagram live series #lowdowninlockdown, interviewing exciting stars from the entertainment and music industry. Keep an eye out for all things MOBO on social media, as Kanya hints at soon to be revealed projects!

Blossoming Style
I am not Erykah Badu, albeit I am greatly inspired by her entire energy, I didn't come into the world completely formed around my sense of fashion and style. My inclinations were hidden in the substrate of my subconscious and as I became more myself it slowly rose to my conscious mind and outward facing public persona.
The one thing that really cements this is seeing how pieces I have had for a long time have changed in how I present and wear them. Its such an organic process and it happens so subtlety that its hard to notice the changes. I had recently come across a trove of images from 2007, that is seventeen years ago, lets say that again, seventeen years ago, nearly two decades! I have put together collages showing these pieces then, and how I rock them now.
This demonstration is so important for those just developing their personal style, its good to see that most of us don't just arrive at our destination and that there are many stops along the way to get our LOOKS to where we want them to be. I am still jealous of people in their twenties who seemed to come out fully formed, for some of them its access to wealth that allows this exploration and others are just naturally creative using what little they have to put together great things.
2007/2013
Tumblr media
On the left I am wearing this vintage polyester seventies shirt with one of my necklaces bought from a Brooklyn-based artisan. Off-hand I can't remember what else I was wearing but we will focus on how I later paired this shirt with some yellow jeans, tan suede boots, a bunch of bangles and another Brooklyn-born necklace with amber and ivory. I am also noting my go-to bracelet this orange-beaded piece that I bought in Miami that fell apart a few years ago, I still have the beads, just need to meet another jewelry maker.
There was a nice refining of my style, earlier I would be more simple in my approach to accessories, later I would layer more colors and textures with a look. I am also wearing Warby Parker eyeglasses in later image feeling more comfortable utilizing my glasses as an additional accessory and not just a eyesight enhancing tool.
2007/2022
Tumblr media
I snatched up this Jean Paul Gaultier haute courtier top at the Century 21 on 86th Street in Brooklyn way prior to its closing. I think this was my second Gaultier top, I really loved this one because on me it felt very African. In two-thousand seven I paired it with these wooden beads purchased at Atlantic Antic. My hair is also notable in this first image because my locs were curly, a style I haven't really rocked in years.
In two-thousand twenty-two, similar to the first set of images I have really leaned into accessories. I am pretty sure in the first shot I was wearing a pair of premium denim jeans, and my go-to Puma Black shoes that had similar color as my beads with these golf-shoes sole.
In the modern take with the Gaultier top I am pairing my newly acquired wide-legged pants from Nubian Hueman a company I think based out of DC that was vending at AfroPunk. Italian boots from Corrente I had bought online from an LA boutique. One of the beautiful neck pieces I had acquired in Accra in Ghana from a local artisan. A scarf by Zhuzh also copped at AfroPunk bundled around my neck in a way I had observed a friend wearing his. A silver cuff with a red precious stone I got while in Jaipur - India. An orange Coach ranger pack from their outlet, eyeglasses from Brooklyn-based Black-woman owned EENY Eyewear and this cobalt clip on earring of my grandmother, that I later gifted to my niece after this photoshoot. Last but not least lets notice that I did a reverse French braid with my locs just for this mini-shoot.
Whew, a lot going on here, but as you can see even with out over-layering I have learned how to really elevate a look but also tie the pieces together with my unique aesthetic which is clearly very African, Black and urban inspired.
2007/2022
Tumblr media
This coffee-bean rayon shirt from Mardana made in NYC, I purchased in a boutique in Chelsea of all places. On my neck a jade necklace probably from some local vendor, my hair in an updo and I can see this is before I lost my watch in Elmina and one of those rubber rainbow bracelets left over from the pride parade.
In the twenties I bought back those wooden bead of mine, now suspended on copper-wire by a local artist I had re-string them for me. My go-to Havaianas the only open-toed foot wear I will wear. And the pants I purchased from the late Harriet's Alter Ego which had a shop on Flatbush, anyone knowing her work would know these pant's patchworks were the mastery of Hekima who is still bringing her beautiful pieces to the world.
I am wearing a brass bracelet gifted to me by an actress on this Broadway show I was working on and a cuff from Benin that I purchased in Accra. Once again finishing off this casual look with Warby Parker glasses.
2012/2022
Tumblr media
Wow finally a piece from Gureje who used to be my go-to Black designer for pieces to wear to my gallery openings. I had him custom make this suit for me back in two-thousand twelve for a string of openings I had. A one-night only solo exhibition at Soho House courtesy of Bombay Sapphire, then my debut in Art Basel Miami courtesy of Rush Arts Gallery. I also had good company because the late Melvin Van Peebles also had one of these made for himself.
In twelve I barely had any shirts to wear with this suit and wore a linen blue and white short-sleeved shirt with it. As you can see I wasn't even at a place where I could fully realize my beauty in this suit that I need to be at my high-school weight to wear. I would also feature this suit at the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Gala in 2014 where I slayed!
Tumblr media
But I want to focus on how I bought this look back in 2022, pairing this very upscale suit with sneakers from Diverge a turquoise turtleneck from Paul Frederick a beautiful brass necklace with turquoise beads from a shop on Instagram and tortoise colored glasses from Warby Parker.
I took something classic and made it urban, fun and modern. I put together the ensemble in mere seconds and was getting compliments all day as I was out and about in Coney Island with my niece.
Tumblr media
Not going to wax poetic about these African fabric throwaway pants that I purchased on a roadside in Accra. I say throwaway because they literally cost little to nothing and were only probably meant to be worn a few times and thrown away but from 2013 to 2022 these main one of my favorite warm-weather bottoms. Versatile in being able to be paired with just about anything.
Tumblr media
This is my one takeaway for everyone who is developing their personal style, have fun, and most importantly always be YOU in whatever you wear and you too can be iconic in your lifetime.
