The world’s most notable physicists gathered at the Solvay Conference in 1927 to discuss the newly formulated quantum theory.
New perspective on quantum theory
The development of quantum mechanics' mathematical formalism dates back almost a century, yet its underlying physical foundation has remained elusive. However, a recent study by a physicist at the University of Illinois Chicago offers a novel perspective on this subject. In the study, published in the journal Foundations of Physics, author Mehran Shaghaghi provides proof of the Schrödinger equation from the first physical principles and establishes a solid physical basis for quantum theory. The study shows that quantum systems are characterized by a limited number of variables that can be reduced to just one. Shaghaghi gives the example of electrons, which can vary in energy, momentum and spin direction, but when prepared in a coherent beam for quantum experiments, only retain a single variable, their spin direction. Shaghaghi, a postdoctoral research associate in the UIC department of radiology, states that when a system's adjustable variables are reduced to one, it displays properties that are commonly associated with quantum systems.
"By developing the mathematical theory that describes the dynamics of such systems, I was able to derive the standard mathematical formalism of quantum theory," Shaghaghi said. Learn more about this groundbreaking study here.

Congratulations, UP Diliman Chemical Engineering (summa cum laude, 2014) alumnus Alexander John Cruz for receiving the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Solvay Prize for his research on “Metal-organic frameworks by vapor deposition processes” during the 49th IUPAC Conference in The Hague, The Netherlands (20-25 August 2023).
Since 1911, IUPAC has a long history of gathering some of the world’s highly-acclaimed scientists, including Pierre and Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Ernest Rutherford.
Alex's prize pays tribute to advanced materials research in solving global issues and concerns. Pioneering work on metal-organic frameworks has now been captured by energy technology companies, like Baker Hughes, to accelerate its industrial applications in the climate technology solutions space. Part of Alex's research may enable mobile phones to capture what dogs can smell, including illegal substances during airport inspections.
He was my student in English, and Science, Technology, and Society, where I discussed creative writing in the digital age. Previously, he was a Yakal Residence Hall resident. The encouragement of his mentors at the UP Diliman Department of Chemical Engineering and his UP Alchemes org mates brought about his early scientific accomplishments. He won many prizes as an undergrad, including the 2014 DOST-BPI Science Award. He was also a DOST Scholar who supported his family. His early breakthroughs compelled him to become a technology leader to amplify further the critical role of scientists in tackling energy security, affordability, and sustainability.
