I recently heard someone talking about doing a solo roleplaying retreat. Man, that kind of vacation never sounded so good. Count me in! I mean, by myself. Solo.

Person I’d like to game with: Me. That’s right. I love some solo roleplaying these days. Dragonbane works very well for that as does Shadowdark RPG. I also write a lot of stories around ICONS and Monster of the Week. There’s also Power Rangers RPG when I don’t have a group for it. There’s more to solo roleplaying than rolling dice and consulting an oracle. I usually run 3-5 characters or more,…

Do you have any advice for people new to Dungeons and Dragons?

Don't start with Dungeons and Dragons unless you want to.

There's literally thousands of systems out there, from typical fantasy to sci fi to things like Wanderhome (furry pastoral calmness) to stuff that's just. Wild and weird and wonderful.

Decide if you want to do in person or digital. Or both. In person is great, make sure to bring snacks and character sheets, and extra dice.

Digital can be done over roll20 or just discord; it is convenient but some aspects of the game are more difficult.

Make sure you talk about your game with your players, if you're DMing-- have a session 0, to determine characters and tone and safety. A good game is one where everyone is having fun, and considerate fun includes everyone, including the more sensitive.

Don't be afraid to try solo; if you can't get a group together, or are too shy, solo ttrpgs exist and they GO HARD. There's thousands on itch.io, just browse around and you'll find something you like.

I'd give some recs but I'm sleepy and that feels hard. Go to itch.io and search 'ttrpg' or 'physical game' or Reddit's r/rpg and r/SoloRoleplaying.

Solo Gaming and BRP Design Challenge.

Back to the topic of solo roleplaying a little bit. I'm adding it to the list of chapters in my BRP Design Challenge entry.
