Opening a new game over at startplaying.games!
Do you like the Ravenloft setting but feel like the 5e system doesnt do horror very well? I agree, hows your wednesdays? well over -> here <- you can join my more old school style campaign using the low magic swashbuckling Dragonbane ruleset (also a good way to learn the system if youre interested in OSR stuff, its very simple!)
About the adventure
Steel clashes on the streets under night skies and the mists bear sole witness to dark deeds. Darkon is a kingdom of lies and secrets, kept under the fist of the wizard king Azalin— but even his control is not absolute, and for those of daring disposition there are great rewards for the taking. This is a player-driven game of swashbuckling adventure and mystery set against a gothic horror background, based on older iterations of the Ravenloft setting with a classic sword and sorcery ambience using the Dragonbane rules.

RTFM, the RPG book club podcast, is back with another box set. This time, it's the Swedish Drakar och Demoner, or as it's known in English, Dragonbane. Who is this game for? Why can't indie devs get a big box budget? And why am I now keeping track of every person who's ever harmed me?

While I don't want my own campaigns to be as silly, and my friends aren't as effortlessly funny as literal professional comedians, one inspiration I'm definitely taking from Dimension 20 is campaign length. I'm in the midst of DMing a massive, CR-style, 100+ session 5e campaign now, and while it's a blast and I may want to do it again in a few years, for the most part I think I want to shift to shorter, tighter campaigns. Not only will that let me and the others at my table play more TTRPGs and more characters over a similar length of time, it will also keep plotting tighter and reduce burnout (I hope! The latter, at least, is contingent on doing this as a hobby and not under deadline; I'm not insinuating Brennan et al. have an easy time jumping from campaign to campaign)
Among other things, I think I gotta do this if I'm ever gonna get to run Daggerheart and Numenera and Pathfinder and Starfinder and 13th Age and 7th Sea and Spire and Dragonbane and Symbaroum and DnD 4e and The Wildsea and

ALRIGHT so
It's the first era, dragons are still roaming the land, and Olaf One-Eye has Numinex trapped within Dragonsreach, a palace built around its prisoner. Now, we know that Numinex went mad in his isolation, and he died without ever escaping, as his skull hangs on the wall above the throne, but a dragon does not simply die of madness, and they certainly do not die of old age.
So it's no surprise that Numinex outlives his captor, and he sits within the walls of Dragonsreach for hundreds of years, a shell of the mighty beast he once was. Of course, the residents of Dragonsreach grow cautious and waring of their living trophy. They do not want him in the palace anymore, but they cannot set him free, else he would surely burn all of Whiterun to the ground, and killing a dragon, even a restrained one, is no easy feat. What would they do with the body of a dead dragon, anyway?
Enter the Dragonguard. Now, they had their tools, Dragonhorns that could pull a dragon out the sky, but what they really needed was a weapon. Something that could kill a dragon with ease, bring an end to the battle with minimal casualties. Which begged the question: could you enchant a weapon such a way that it could do great harm to the dov? It is known that only one with the soul of a dragon can truly defeat another dragon, so, theoretically, if one were to imbue an enchanted weapon with the soul of a dragon, would that not achieve their goal? Perhaps it would even allow them to bring an true end to the dov, without the need for a Dragonborn.
Well, there is only one way to find out, and Dragonsreach just so happens to have a dragon they're looking to be rid of.
I don't think I need say more than that. Were they successful? They certainly did find a way to bind a dragon soul to a blade, but it was a costly and dangerous process. Yes, Dragonbane is powerful against the dov, but the might of a dragon soul will bite back at any wielder lacking the power to control it, and it cannot devour the souls of others as they had hoped it would.
Is the consciousness of Numinex still in there, I wonder? Stuck in an eternal limbo between alive and dead? Perhaps it is best not to ponder on it too much, after all, what a horrible existence that must be.

A Game of Thrones, Tyrion II
There were nineteen skulls.
The oldest was more than three thousand years old; the youngest a mere century and a half.
The most recent were also the smallest; a matched pair no bigger than a mastiff’s skulls, and oddly misshapen, all that remained of the last two hatchlings born on Dragonstone.
They were the last of the Targaryen dragons, perhaps the last dragons anywhere, and they had not lived very long.

Give the Gift of Infinite Stories with These TTRPG Starter Sets
I believe one of the best gifts you can give any time of the year is the gift of TTRPGs. With a starter set or player's handbook, you are giving somebody the gift of infinite stories.
I believe one of the best gifts you can give any time of the year is the gift of TTRPGs. With a starter set or player’s handbook, you are giving somebody the gift of infinite stories. Growing the hobby means new players and new dungeon masters. The holiday season is also a great time to get new people on both sides of the table. So whether you sense a young dungeon master in the making, need a…

"Free League’s reasoning for each fantasy game they release is different. In many cases, it’s also not hard to see that the genre has a lot of room for variety. That does make it a little interesting, though, when Free League acquires the IP for the grand-daddy of Swedish RPGs. As of 2021 they did make such an acquisition, and the result is out now in the form of Dragonbane." - Aaron Marks

Something I've learned about myself now that I've dived into 6+ mid- to high-crunch TTRPGs is that I will always need two attempts, usually with a break of several weeks in between, before I really Get them.
The first time is always like
And then the second time, with fresh eyes, I'm invariably suddenly like
