Today's compilation:
The Sound of Hollywood Girls 1983 Hard Rock / Punk Rock / New Wave / Heavy Metal
Oh my god, FUCK YES, dude! 😤 This is such an incredible album here! A crop of all-female and female-fronted underground rock acts of different stripes just delivering some pure rawness in early 80s Los Angeles, right before all the cock-rocking, dopey hair bands *really* came to take hold of the Sunset Strip and went on to define for most what 80s LA rock music was. Lots of odd, goofy, and quirkily satisfying fare to be found within this thing, and a lot of it done by *very* ephemeral acts that you've probably never heard of in your life.
Like, take De De Troit, for example: a woman who fronted a band called U.X.A. that put out a sole studio album in the 80s and who herself only put out one solo 7-inch in her career as well. She contributes a plainly wild exclusive cover here of the controversial, Phil Spector-produced and Carole King-and-Gerry Goffin-penned 1962 tune, "He Hit Me," by The Crystals, by laying down a strange combination of heavy, fuzz-muddy guitar chords and whimsical, saccharine pop strings, and then shifting the tempo upwards to churn out some brief bouts of killer punk rock on the choruses. Just totally irresistible nuttery in that one 😜🤘.
Then the B-side kicks off with a pair of less weird, but still fantastic tracks that would later go on to comprise both sides of a split 7-inch that same year, provided by, who are, by far, this album's two most popular bands: Hellion and Bitch. Hellion, fronted by the scratchiness of Ann Boleyn, deliver "Nightmares," a terrific hard rockin' metal groove that comes with one wicked guitar solo, and then Bitch light up and dazzle with some head-spinning, galloping thrashiness on "I'm in Love" 😍.
Truth be told, the A-side, which has more of the enjoyable quirk on it, is the more consistent half of this release, but those two Hellion and Bitch tunes that lead off the B-side are the most technically impressive ones of this whole bunch.
Tremendous record from the Hollywood-based Mystic Records here that presents an eclectic blend of rock tunes, from hard rock, to heavy metal, to punk and new wave, all while shining a spotlight on some great and mostly fleeting early 80s LA female talent. Lots of fun and chock-full of exclusives too.
Highlights:
LA Girls - "Sure" Soloman Kane - "Twilight Zone" The Skirts - "S&M Blvd. Boy" Butch - "Tractor Trailor Tragedy" De De Troit - "He Hit Me" Hellion - "Nightmares" Bitch - "I'm in Love"

The first books I remember reading were the stories of King Arthur and Greek mythology. They were violent and sexy, in the context of the struggle of good humans vs evil monsters, with the monsters sometimes being human too. I went on to gobble up Robert E. Howard’s stories of noble barbarians and chivalrous anti-heroes like Conan and Soloman Kane. My son is named after one of my favorite REH characters, which I admitted to D only well after the fact. I still enjoy tales of good vs evil in gritty primitive settings.
Except now the stories I read, written by the likes of Joe Abercrombie, S.M. Stirling, and A.E. Rayne, are far more nuanced and “realistic”(?) in terms of character and setting. Actually, thinking back, Howard got a lot of that right in the worlds he described as so smelly and filthy as were the people. This is the problem I have with the new fantasy serials as seen on TV.
I’ve read the World of Fire & Ice series twice. You probably know it as Game of Thrones. I haven’t watched it yet but I’ll give it a try at some point. Up till now, I’ve been sure I’ll be disappointed. The world and characters in the books were beautifully written, in the most repugnant terms. I suspect that aspect didn’t make it to video. I couldn’t get through the first episode of Peaky Blinders. Though I love all things England, the London and its denizens portrayed on screen were entirely too gorgeous, the shit and piss filled streets looking more like delicious Crème brûlée.
There’s a new series just starting on Netflix called “The Witcher.” I’ve not read the novels but I was vaguely aware of the premise so seeing it was starting today, I read a short review and had a look at the official trailer. Yeah, probably not.
All the characters are beautiful, clean, well-groomed, and have better teeth than me.

Conan Serpent War #2 Marvel Comics 2019 Written by Jim Zub Illustrated by Stephen Segovia Coloured by Frank D'Armata James Allison Illustrated by Vanesa R. Del Rey James Allison Coloured by Jean-François Beaulieu Lettered by VC's Travis Lanham In an unprecedented comics event, Robert E. Howard’s characters join forces along with Marvel’s Moon Knight, in an all-new saga built on REH and Marvel lore from across the ages! The serpent god SET plans to usher in an eternity of darkness, and only the chosen warriors across time and space have a hope of stopping him: CONAN THE BARBARIAN, SOLOMON KANE, DARK AGNES, and the man known as MOON KNIGHT! First of all I love Jim and his mind and ability to craft a story. Then add Stephen & Frank into the mix and by all the gods above this is utterly sensational. While some of my favourite writing from Jim comes from his Dungeons & Dragons work and this is right up that alley so for me this is something he was meant to do. It is also the kind of storytelling that I miss from Marvel so it's great to see this from them showing me there is hope that good, strong and interesting, see unexpected also, books will make it to stands. The opening here is everything one could hope for and so much more. This Priestess is devout and helps heal and the setting is just perfect. Then the moment Set reveals himself to her I almost cried, dropped the book and sat just staring at his magnificence and I have to say, sigh, that was a moment one doesn't forget in their lifetime. When we see John talk to the four of them while they are in groups of two is interesting. Mainly because I wonder at the significance of two groups instead of one that splits up. Not being aware of the others seems deceitful, misleading and sows doubt in the reader to his true purpose. Of course by it doing this Jim has engaged the readers' mind so they are sucked into this for the long haul. Oh how the imagination works and how the reader thinks is something Jim's incredibly adept at bringing out in the reader. You know how I felt seeing Set this issue and the entire book is illustrated in such a powerful way. John's segments as well with their variations and what we see has this whole mystical quality to it that perfectly suits what the characters represent. The linework here is stellar as it's strong and how the varying weights are utilised to showcase the attention to detail is stunning. Also faces, facial expressions, body language and the overall look of each character we see is so perfectly rendered and Stephen & Frank's Moon Knight makes me drool. The composition inside the panels with the utilisation of the backgrounds bring us a very good look at depth perception, scale and bring a sense of size and scope of the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such masterful eyes for storytelling. The colour work we see here and how Frank utilises these flesh tones and the various hues and tones to create shading and enhance the musculature and facial features is so utterly dynamic. How we see the shading, highlights and shadow work through the colours and their hues and tones is done so spectacularly. I am loving the way that this book is structured. The choice of who is teamed with who is interesting as well. While Conan and Agnes share that love of the fight and have these strong wilful personalities make them similar and as the story moves forward we see just how much. The same with Moon Knight and Soloman Kane, two men whose faith in their gods drives them to purge evil from the earth make them uneasy allies. So to see how Jim is able to showcase their similarities and their differences as well as how they work together is so great to see play out. This is the kind of storytelling that is universally beloved. The writing is strong and crafted superbly while the interiors are stunning in their detail and the impact the imagery has is beyond compare.

“Who knew I had this much power, waiting for me, once my heart was whole again…”
It had been in the open air, the last fragment of my heart, from my initial battle with Soloman Kane. Back when Lycaon was alive, back when we were dancing around each other, back when I nearly died. Lycaon had found the shard of my heart, and as soon as it hit fresh air, I sent my drakon after it. He could phase,…
