Snaps from one afternoon in November at Los Organos in the Piura province of Peru. This was the day I took a surfing lesson with a local named Ernesto. We were the only ones in the ocean as I tried again and again to stand on the surfboard, falling many times and filling my ears with salt water. I loved the experience, especially when I was waiting for a wave on the board and saw rainbows appearing in ocean mist.

In the end, I did manage to stand up on the surboard, and rode a couple very small waves. Doing the hang-ten hand symbol with Ernesto while bobbing in the ocean was one of the best experiences of my life.

After going home, I had many recurring dreams about waves: I dreamt about big waves coming toward a city, about waterfall cliffs, about swimming under waves and watching them crash above me. The region was later hit by abnormally large waves, which caused damage to the fishing boats I had photographed just a month or so before the incident.

Two new pieces I've been working on for a while:

"In and Out with Mister Average" (10x4" mounted on wood) and

"Tombstoning with Benny the Kook" (7.25x8"). Collages with cereal icons.

You might notice the monster faces in these come from the General Mills 'Monster Cereals' box art icons redesigned by the artist KAWS for the 2022 Halloween Season.

When I started making these I was going to jokingly write, "Hey check out my new collab with KAWS!" But then I saw he recently had to sue somebody who made knockoffs of his figures, and this is not that - don't sue me KAWS! I bought the cereal at Grocery Outlet and like anything a collage artist picks up, there's a fair chance it'll end up in the art.

When I think of dada and the start of collage, there's lots of thick pulpy stock, hand-printed posters, letterpress, brown envelope paper, and individually developed photographs. As the years passed magazine advertisements became more and more dominant in the medium.

I use a lot of food packaging and recycled grocery bags in my collages, which makes sense considering how I live and my economics. A lot of prepackaged convenience meals that're high carb to keep me full. I have more to say about how economics dictate media, but this post isn't the place for it.

I think I've figured out what these two pieces are about though Solitude has become another important part of my practice. I didn't spot the 9/11 imagery until a few days ago though.

I’m shocked that I don’t actually hate MSJ’s solos on that new Off the Soundboard. I’m not really into a lot of 80s guitarists in general because I’m just really not into the shreddy style but I’ve heard only a shitty clip of him before that sounded like a car crash and that’s what I was expecting.
