I grew up walking in the woods on pine needle laden game trails and atv routes, and over palmetto lined marshes. When in my 20’s I got into recreating on public lands, I reconnected to my roots in some fundemental ways, I suppose. It came naturally. The more miles I walked, the more I helplessly saw the planet for what it was, what it is, and what it could be again. Public lands are precious. Private lands are too. My love affair with the natural world has radically shaped and changed the way I move through our anthropogenic one, from the way I care for my domestic pets in order to protect wildlife, to carrying a trash bag so that I can pick up trash on trails, roadsides, etc. To driving slower, to donating to local wildlife programs in my state. Recreating on public lands reminds me how much we have to gain by reconnecting with our planet, and how much we have to lose when we behave in ways that cause damage. Gaia is a great teacher, and worth all effort to protect from human greed and ego. It’s impossible to live a life on this earth entirely flawless, and without leaving a carbon footprint. But those little things we do, and those attitudes we hold daily, can have significant effects on the world around us. We are connected to the planet and all wild beings even still. Next week I’ll be finally sharing some work I shot on a 50 mile solo trek out west. Thanks to Hyperlite Mountain gear’s camera pod, I was able to tote my Fuji TX1 safely and comfortably on my adventure. Stay tuned!

Very memorable day while heading to the mountains to backpack. With endless windy roads going up my car started over heating and leaking coolant. Risking the drive to the top and doing my best pretending my car dident almost blow the engine I started my long hike up the mountain. Never expecting anything I got rewarded with a winter wonderland and getting views like this alone was a highlight of my time in California. Hoping to backpack this mountain again soon enough!

I'm not the world's greatest at social media. It feels that I can be a bit of a fish swimming in a different direction than the proverbial school sometimes too. I’m a photographer, never a content creator. I make photographs, not content. I’m a creative person, not “a creative”. Modern wordage saying things we’ve said before? Maybe, maybe not. I just don’t relate. Maybe I’m a fuddy-duddy at 33 for feeling this way; maybe I’m protecting my personal sense integrity where I can. My hope is always to print my work (books or prints) and have it seen in such a way. I’ve been so fortunate this year to do be apart of two gallery shows, both at Cedarhurt in Mt Vernon Illinois and The Frist here in Nashville. Right now I’m toying with a few major project concepts. Been busy making a few album covers, doing some commercial work, and wrapping up a series I shot in Scotland when I have time. It’s hard to believe we are well into September, but it’s been a great year with lots of great people and projects. I’m just trying to make honest work, study photography I love, stay positive, and be a good person to the people in my life. My thoughts are don’t let social media or capitalist mentalities consume you, get off your phone, make plans to immerse yourself in time with people, the planet, experiences, and so on. That phone in your hand, that toxic email, those situations or people that made you feel unwell, don’t let these things absorb you. Look for the deep stuff in life and suck the ever living marrow out of it - adventures are not only photoshoots and thru hikes, but so are coffee dates with friends and smelling the flowers in your garden. You won’t get any of this time you are given back - make your days magic, my friends. Tha beatha àlainn! Taken at the end of a 156 mile walk across Scotland | Loch Ness | May 2023 | After this portrait, I walked Eastbound a few more miles and found a pub and an inn. Apparently, this 18th century inn hosted many including Charlie Chaplin quite a few times. Anyways, I bought myself a room, veggie curry, and a few pints. Ended up sitting with a group of older ladies from Northern England and getting a little tipsy with them. That night I fell asleep stuffing my face with Walkers Shortbread biscuits in bed. The next day I caught a bus to Inverness, and then a train back to Glasgow, the place where I began my walk.

Good things about travel Instagram: actually helpful tips, nice videos and pictures to look at when daydreaming, discovering hidden gems, learning more about the world, budget friendly trip suggestions, body positive hiking content
Bad things about travel Instagram: "I quit my job to travel the world and so should you" "why aren't you travelling" "should people who snore be shot?" "Instagram Vs Reality (omg other people exist??)"

I was recently shown a photo by @heyclickadee of some merch from Galaxy's Edge that seemed very befitting for a certain pouch-loving nerd. I took one look at that belt and thought that he would wear at least three of them, plus the vest covered with pockets. he looks very Han Solo-esque to boot 😜
I also took this as an opportunity to kinda show my drawing process, which you can see under the cut:
I like to think of my drawings as dolls. having grown up playing with barbies and other various dolls, it's helped me a lot treating my art the same way I treated those toys. all the way down to undefined anatomy LOL
Tumblr media
first I sketch the body "naked". this helps me get an idea of where certain body parts would be underneath the clothes (and how much they would protrude and all that stuff)
Tumblr media
then I draw the clothes on top of the body on a separate layer. think of it like paper dolls!
Tumblr media
finally, I draw any accessories on another layer over the clothes. then I erase the portions that need to be hidden from the clothes layer before merging everything together (minus the body; I only keep the head portion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then of course comes lineart and coloring. these each have their own layers, with the colors sometimes needing multiple layers for specific sections (like Tech, who has the yellow lenses of his goggles). shading also has its own layer, which is clipped to the main color layer. backgrounds vary, but I usually don't do much with the background and just throw random stuff on a single layer LOL
aaaand that's it! some of my art pieces get much more complicated than this, but this is my "typical" style as of late. hope you enjoyed the explanation! 😁

What I learned in the Philippines
Traveling to the Philippines felt like going halfway around the world. Which it basically is from Austria. Going to Manila via Taipeh was even longer. But that’s something to take into account already for next time. Because there will be a next time for sure. And then I will hopefully remember everything that I have put down in writing here. Because there was much that I learned while traveling…
