Perini Navi's 'Art Explorer,'
Commissioned by Art Explora, it's the world's largest sailing catamaran, with a length of 46.5 meters, a width of 17.30 meters, and a 50-meter mast.
The flybridge will host virtual exhibitions, while the central part will house the gallery for the inaugural digital exhibition 'Icons' on women in the Mediterranean.
On the roof of the deckhouse, have been installed 65 square meters of solar panels, allowing an instantaneous production of 12 kW and a total energy accumulation of more than 200 kW each day.
The design is by Axel de Beaufort and Guillaume Verdier.

y'know, van lifer family vloggers are a scourge on society already. but i've got a new one lately: boat life family vloggers. so over the last week on facebook watch/video, i've started to get a young aussie couple, say in their early 30s, trying to convince people that living on a catamaran, sailing around the world is the peak of living sustainably and "beating the housing crisis" and "living the life they want" etc etc etc, all the usual mantras of van lifer family vloggers.
i don't really know how old most of the videos in my feed are, but in a couple of the latest ones that i've watched, they have a toddler (say about 2 years old) and a 6 month old or something. I've been thinking, along side of a parody series of van lifer family videos that I watch on YT shorts, about how incredibly cramped this life is. just how much control these parents want over their kids. how lonely and isolating it will be for those kids once they're older, and need actual kids their age- not just their sibling (or siblings if these people want more kids that the two they've got)- to interact with outside of and away from their parents (and their brother rn- or sister/s if they have more kids). at one stage, right after they have their second kid, they're straight back on the boat like a week after the kid is born.
in one of the videos, they show you around a new boat that's about $1.5 million to buy. they show you all the rooms in it: the galley, the two bedrooms, the kitchen etc and the navigation deck. but in what i suppose is meant to be the master bedroom (it's a queen bed stuffed between 2 walls and a door, with two small overhead fans when it's hot)..... and there's a funny thing down the end of the bed for storage. the woman of the couple, who shows the viewers the room, goes "oh i could probs fit in here!!! *feet stick out as she tries to squeeze herself into a STORAGE UNIT* oh wait. no i can't fit in it. it really is storage. or y'know. you could fit a child in there, i suppose." like. kelsey or whatever your name is. why the fuck would you put a kid in there??? other than maybe you're nursing them and want them close. but still. it's A FUCKING STORAGE UNIT?????
but i digress. you're being "environmentally conscious". you're living off of solar power and "teaching our kids about the r E a L w O r L d!!!!! giving them a real education!!! letting them live a life that they'd NEVER have on the mainland of australia!!! look! we've sailed to the bahamas to meet another youtube travel couple!! look! our boat broke down in bali so now kelsey has a much needed break from the kids on the mainland of indonesia bc we've invited our family over to the conutry bc it's closer (and cheaper) than Hawaii, where we were a month ago!!!"
like. have you considered that maybe this isn't really healthy for your kids??? like you have the tiniest fucking shower "or if the weather's good, our shower is mother nature :).... using the crystal clear waters of barbados to wash ourselves!!!! isn't that just awesome and cool and unique!!!???" and "oh our boat batteries have died so now we HAVE to shack up at a marina to charge :(! this sucks, bc it's so much better to be right next to dolphins in the atlantic oceans for our little boys!!!! we hate being on any mainland really bc we're not being self-sufficient!!! but half the time we have to moor and go to the mainland of anywhere, to make sure we stock up on locally sourced, grass fed farmer's market stock and also long life food!!!"
anyway. you get my point. i don't think this channel is good for starters, considering that what if you have a massive fight, in which you need time to cool off AWAY from your partner??? even more esp when you have the two kids now??? you really have NO private space on this catamaran, even though they sell it as if they do. again, obvs they're not filming EVERYTHING so you don't know what goes on when the camera isn't on. but still. i think this lifestyle is all fun and games..... until you get kids in the picture.
i dont think it matters if your son atlas (the 2 year old) and your son ashwaganda (the baby) really see dolphins up close in the atlantic ocean vs an aqaurium or on a doplhin cruise back in australia. they do NOT need "real world living" at goddamned 2 YEARS OLD AND 6 MONTHS OLD!!!! they are CHILDREN. they need other kids to be around.... and in their immediate family back in australia...... not just with their parents..... and random kids that they might meet in whatever country you've sailed to.... for like a week. before you claim "it's been too long since we've had our sea legs and we're so restless to get back on the water to BE FREE and away from the hustle and bustle of *insert city here*.... even if it WAS a welcoming break for mummy and daddy. since daddy had the boys over in bali and mummy shoved you off on grandma while we had a retreat in bali."
it's just beyond me that they're selling themselves as an aspirational couple and how "to break free of the mainland of your country and trust your gut for family!!! be self-sufficient today and live the free-roaming, real world, carefree catamaran adventurer/vagabond life today with your kids in tow!!!!" NO!!! i can just imagine how much your kids will hate you if you continue to live this life when they're older than 2 years old and 6 months old.

Tuesday 3rd October
Hopefully I can upload a few photos this evening. Having gone to bed really early, day started started really really early for Nicky and I as we woke right up at 5 am, jumped up, showered and dressed and went for a walk along the waterfront - there being enough lights for us to see our way and not trip and spoil our holiday! Flam (pronounced Flum … or as our tour leader calls it, “The Flum”!) is honestly one of the prettiest and most peaceful and yet dramatic places I have ever been to. I hope you get an idea from the photos.
After our walk, a MONSTROUS cruise ship (Carrie’s 5000 people!) was parked right in front of our hotel balcony! It wasn’t there when we set off, but was being guided in to the dock. Not for me, that sort of holiday, but others love it. Actually …I would be interested to try it for a long weekend, “just to see…”. The walk was beautiful because it was mild …. and silent …. and pretty!
Anyway, after breakfast, we jumped on board a lovely catamaran ferry and slowly cruised up and around the Sognefjord (the King of fjords) which is UNESCO World Heritage site. Water literally thousands of meters deep and fed by hundreds of small and huge waterfalls with the occasional farm house - often with its own sauna hut at the water’s edge - and a few sheep. I have SO many questions to ask about how the people living there survive, surely they can’t make a living from 20 sheep and there was no sign of electricity poles and wires on one side of the fjord and there would be no chance of solar power. So if any of you know a Norwegian who knows anything about this area of agriculture, I’d love to know!
Again, I am blown away by the height of the mountains either side of the fjords and the depths of the water. We all ooo’d and aghhh’d about how beautiful it is - and it is - but how tough would it be to live there!!
Although we came to Flam by rail, there is vehicle access too, one road going through the longest tunnel in the world - 25 km!
But back to the fjord cruise… I think I will have to let the photos paint the picture.
From the ferry, we caught a bus, weaving along the road (no… the driver wasn’t our “high” tour guide from 2 days ago!!!) past the sweetest little houses and tiny villages and …. MORE WATERFALLS. What amazes me about the waterfalls is not only how many of them, but the power of them. Even the ones that look to be trickling down, are white. I have just looked up a scientific answer to this, but you can do that!! I just know it’s because of the velocity of the fall.
From the bus, we were again on a train, and arrived in Bergen (or as Richard our tour leader says “The Berrrrrgen”. Bergen is a very busy shipping port (it would been very scary thousands of years ago, to see the Vikings rowing in!) that has very little flat land on which to build, so many of the houses are built on the side of mountains. Nicky Poppie and I have become accustomed to a very early dinner and book reading for Nicky and blogging for me (Poppie is in another room) and going to sleep early. So as I write this, it is 8 pm and we have had our dinner (a restaurant specializing in fish which was so beautifully fresh and yummy), walked a bit and then stopped at a groovy little place and had a short black coffee and Poppie and I shared a scoop of ice cream and half an apple cake thing. I didn’t eat my chips, so didn’t feel too guilty! Each day though, we had taken advantage of the delicious breakfast and had a more than hearty one and not needed anything until dinner. All breakfasts are provided and some dinners.
There are 22 people on our tour, mostly couples and all friendly and thank goodness no prima donnas! Of course there are all sorts and we have our favorites!! There is one giant of a man (tall and big, not fat) who is just a bit “odd”. He has an English wife who seems oblivious of the fact that we know he’s a bit odd. He doesn’t engage with anyone, and if he answers a question, it is always a bit obtuse. He seems completely in his own world, pushes past people etc. Anyway, I think he’s harmless! On the way back from dinner-plus-naughty-snack, we passed a group of young women lit up from head to toe in sparkles and pink, in an outdoor cafe. I asked (all Norwegians are happy to speak English) “Is someone getting married?” and they said it was the pink breast cancer “run”. We told them we had that in Australia too. We actually told them it started in Australia but maybe it didn’t. But they think it did, now!! How amazing is that anyway! A little later we saw lots of young runners dressed in all different shades of pink, running through the town.
Norway is a very peaceful and generally homogenous and egalitarian country, but there are rumblings of dissatisfaction about “economic refugees” being given special treatment. Yet they are still reeling from “one of their own”, Anders Breivik, who was the young man who firstly, killed 8 people from a bomb he planted in the city, then 69 young people at a youth camp on one of the little islands off Oslo. He said it was a wake up call to save the world from Muslims. Such is Norway’s homogeneity, each year on National Constitution Day, they all dress up - regardless of politics - find their ribbons and Norwegian flags and come out onto the street and watch children sing songs. They do this to celebrate something wonderful or reflect on something awful, that has been in the press about Norway. It’s al ost childlike. Maybe because it’s such a small country that it is easier to gather people.
Well, I’m going to have a go at uploading photos now. Wish me luck …

Great thing about free time is you never really know what you’re going to end up doing, learning or seeing. One day last week when temperatures were not in the 30s, we left on foot toward South Perth (known for the Perth Zoo but not our chosen destination) with only exploring in mind. We reached the bottom of Kaarta koomba (Kings Park) bluff and had a busy freeway to navigate across. I saw a pedestrian overpass in one direction but Craig noted an unmarked cross walk the other. In Australia, you may already know but vehicles have the right away so crossing a freeway can be a very harrowing experience. So a sandy gritty walk to the overpass it was.
The overpass itself was noticeably immaculate, air conditioned and linked a three level parking lot (or car park) to The Old Swan Brewery - a beautifully restored red brick building on the riverfront visible from downtown (or CBD central business district) Perth. The old brewery ceased production in 1966 and is now condos, offices, a restaurant (Cooee) and a non-operational brew pub (why it is not open is beyond me - imagine a brick RVYC building in Stanley Park, Vancouver with a fully built out antique bar and you can walk along the seawall to get there).
Cooee’s patio looked out to the Swan River and seemed so zen we decided to stop for an iced dirty chai latte and banana bread (wondering where did the banana bread craze come from?). We voted this chai the best we’ve had ever.
Tumblr media
Recharged and emptied bladders, we set off across the bridge. The salt water river was jammed with huge ominous jellyfish which made me wonder about efforts to rejuvenate the ecological health of the Swan River. Couldn’t find much online but hopefully someone’s concerned about it and taking action. Update - apparently the rise in water temperature is responsible for the increase in jellyfish. This guy is kinda gross and harmless but apparently very protective of the lighter coloured ones that do sting.
Tumblr media
The waterfront park and walk on the south side was expansive and quiet. The condos along South Perth Esplanade (such inventive names) were a nice mix of decades of design and the grounds all well manicured. There’s a catamaran ferry (small seabus) that runs every fifteen minutes to the CBD for $2.30 each way. Once you reach the dock of the ferry, you’ve reached the hub of South Perth - felt a little bit like Edgemont. We wandered up through the Shopping Plaza (basically a lobby area) and onto the street and headed towards the park and the zoo, stopping a a quaint little museum. Apparently South Perth was joined to the rest of the city by the tram system back in the early 1900s, much to the dismay of some of its residents. In fact one person shot at the conductor and the tram when the situation reach its boiling point. And we saw the sketches of May Gibbs, former Perth resident who is famous for her gumnut babies tales and illustrations. Further on our walk, the zoo didn’t appeal enough to pay the entrance fee but we did learn of the hardy grass trees (balga) a staple of the aboriginals, which flower after bushfires and their sap mixed with charcoal and kangaroo poo makes a superglue resin (some dirty hands must have discovered that!). As well as the grass trees and the related information sign, I wanted to show the solar panels used as a covered shaded walkway up to the zoo entrance. How clever.
Tumblr media
Wandering back through the shopping area, including some frivolous clothing try ons, we took note for future visits that some of the condos have monthly rental available. We discovered the Good Grocer (Urban Fare like) with all its healthy reasonable readymade food options. While we continued our walk along the seawall, it was reaching the high for the day of 29. Up ahead a sandwich board sign caught my eye about a driverless vehicle test being conducted by RAC (Royal Automobile Club like BCAA or AMA) so we signed up for it in the hopes of escaping the heat.
The 11 seater electrical bus (equipped with ceiling straps for more standing passengers) has been gathering data since 2016 (7 years!) on a programmed route between the riverfront and The Old 1835 Mill (more on that later maybe). This route is about 2km and 1/2 hour return trip apparently using superior technology to Tesla. There were three buses manufactured but only one currently in daily operation except during lightning storms. I’m wondering why there’s not more of these on the roads gathering data and why there’s not enough data gathered after 7 years to show the ideal options for the safe use of this technology. Hospitals, public park maintenance, airports all seem reasonable places to use these autonomous vehicles to transport people safely. Apparently legislation is blocking further expanded use of them. Wondering how reactionary human operators could be viewed as safer than these emotionless and egoless programmed electric vehicles operated at optimally efficient speed.
Tumblr media
Our surprise day ended with a riverfront dirty martini happy hour and quinoa salmon salad for dinner and a driver operated ferry and bus ride for our return trip back. Who knew what this 15k step day would bring.

Bahamas Cruise 2022, Part 7, March 29. Big Majors anchorage and Staniel Cay.
Tumblr media
Sunrise over pig beach on Big Majors. The roosters are crowing which Nancy loves waking up to.
Tumblr media
Nancy making breakfast burritos.
Tumblr media
The mega yachts have fancy three story inflatable slides. We just jump off the deck.
Tumblr media
Showers are taken on the stern. We spritz off with a diluted mixture of downy and fresh water.
Tumblr media
Nancy heading to pig beach by paddleboard.
Tumblr media
Sun set over Salty Cay, from the Big Majors anchorage. Try to anchor without any islands obscuring the horizon. We commonly witness the “green flash” in the Bahamas, unless there is any island or rock blocking the magical intersection of atmosphere and water.
Tumblr media
Back on Staniel Cay, we dropped by the only General store on the island. It is owned by Reverend Burke Rolle, who preaches on Sunday.
Tumblr media
On the right of the photo is looking down the runway on Staniel. Back in the day, to get to the houses on the other side of the island you would drive across the runway. Rev. Burke, had done it hundreds of times. One day when he crossed he did not see an aircraft about to land, because it was so low it blended in with the trees. He was almost killed and spent months recovering. Considering his injuries and the remoteness from medical attention. Not to mention lack of major trauma level medical help. It really is a miracle he survived.
Tumblr media
One of the first things to figure out on visiting a new island is where to get rid of your trash. We do as much as we can to alleviate trash on board. But eventually you have to get rid of it. On Staniel you can pay money at the Yacht club then throw it in a large trailerable bin. Or you can get your exercise in by walking to the dump. For some reason no one ever offers you a ride while you are walking to the dump. They burn the dump every couple of days and it is a common to see smoke on the horizon.
Tumblr media
Just past the dump on Staniel Cay is a trail leading to the “sound side”. On this day there were a couple of kiteboarders showing off further down the beach. At this point there is no real beach just rocks, and a great view.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Bill Cullen who is our mentor and my childhood friend helped a couple sail their large Catamaran from Marathon, Fl. to Staniel Cay. So he stopped by that evening before flying home the next morning.
Tumblr media
This couple came into the anchorage in a solar powered homebuilt power cat. They have circumnavigated the world, designed an built different boats. Unfortunately, they were a bit hard to communicate with since he only spoke French and she had a heavy french accent when speaking english. But I did buy the plans on the internet to build this solar powered dinghy. It would make a good Everglades Challenge boat some day.
Tumblr media
As we close out the last day of March, this is the view from the north end of Big Majors anchorage. We hiked up 10 minutes from “Cruisers beach”.
Tumblr media
Nancy tried out the swing at “Cruisers Beach”. One crewman from a mega yacht had been dropped off here to get away from his boat and crew for a couple of hours, so we left him to his solitude.
Tumblr media
Evening bathing is suspended until further notice!
S/V Sea Breeze, Big Majors anchorage, Exuma, Bahamas.

The Resale Value of Yachts Over Time: What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
Yachts are symbols of luxury, freedom, and status. However, for those considering purchasing a yacht, the resale value over time is a critical factor to understand. This article explores the trends and factors influencing yacht resale values, including the types of Yacht for sale that hold their value best, depreciation rates, and essential tips for maximizing yacht resale value.
📉 Understanding Yacht Depreciation
Yachts, like most luxury assets, depreciate over time. Typically, new yachts experience significant depreciation within the first few years, similar to luxury cars. Here’s a breakdown of average yacht depreciation rates by years of ownership:Ownership DurationDepreciation Rate1 year20-30%3 years35-45%5 years50-60%10+ years60-80%
The depreciation rate can vary significantly depending on factors like the yacht's build quality, maintenance, brand reputation, and the overall market demand for specific types of yachts.
🚢 Factors Affecting Yacht Resale Value
Several key factors impact a yacht’s resale value:
Brand Reputation: Yachts from well-known brands such as Sunseeker, Azimut, and Ferretti tend to retain higher resale values. These brands have established reputations for quality, reliability, and design, which appeals to buyers in the secondary market.
Maintenance and Upkeep: Yachts that are regularly maintained, with up-to-date services, generally hold their value better. Detailed maintenance records are highly valued in the resale market.
Age and Condition: The yacht’s age and physical condition play significant roles. A well-maintained 10-year-old yacht may be more valuable than a newer yacht in poor condition.
Market Demand for Size and Type: Market demand for specific yacht sizes and types affects resale value. Larger yachts (50 feet or more) often have a different depreciation curve than smaller yachts due to their niche market.
Upgrades and Features: Yachts equipped with modern technology, luxury features, and eco-friendly options tend to have a competitive edge on the resale market.
Economic Conditions: Economic stability and consumer confidence impact the yacht resale market, as demand for luxury assets tends to decline during economic downturns.
⏳ How Yacht Resale Value Trends Over Time
Generally, yachts experience the steepest depreciation in the first three years, which then slows over time. Around the 10-year mark, depreciation levels off, with resale values typically stabilizing, especially if the yacht is from a reputable brand and well-maintained.
Examples of Yacht Resale Value Trends by Type:
Motor Yachts: Due to their size, high operating costs, and fuel consumption, motor yachts tend to depreciate faster than sailboats. However, certain brands known for motor yachts, like Princess or Sunseeker, often retain value better than lesser-known brands.
Sailboats: Sailboats often retain their value slightly better due to lower operating costs and the enduring appeal of sailing. Well-regarded brands like Beneteau and Jeanneau often maintain stronger resale values.
Catamarans: In recent years, catamarans have become increasingly popular for their stability and spaciousness, which helps in retaining value.
💰 Tips for Maximizing Your Yacht’s Resale Value
If you’re looking to optimize your yacht’s resale value, here are some key strategies:
Invest in Regular Maintenance: Regularly scheduled maintenance, along with detailed service records, reassures buyers and boosts resale value.
Modernize Features: Keep your yacht updated with new technology, navigational aids, and eco-friendly solutions like solar panels. These upgrades can be appealing and add significant value.
Protect the Hull and Interior: Maintain the exterior hull with protective coatings and ensure the interior remains clean, stylish, and free of major damage or wear. Small investments in aesthetics can lead to higher resale values.
Choose Popular Brands and Models: If buying new, choose models with strong brand reputations and popular designs. Yachts from well-regarded brands typically depreciate at a slower rate and attract more buyers on the resale market.
Sell During Peak Demand: Timing matters. Selling during peak yachting seasons, such as spring and summer, can increase buyer interest and result in better offers.
🌐 Current Trends in the Yacht Resale Market
The yacht resale market is influenced by global trends, including environmental considerations and shifts in leisure preferences. Here’s what’s currently shaping the market:
Eco-Friendly Yachts: There’s an increasing demand for yachts with lower environmental impact. Eco-friendly yachts, or those with green technologies, often attract more buyers and can hold their value better.
Digital and Autonomous Features: With advancements in navigation and semi-autonomous systems, yachts equipped with digital features have a modern appeal that positively affects resale.
Pandemic-Induced Interest in Yachting: The pandemic led to a surge in yacht purchases as people sought isolated leisure activities, increasing demand and stabilizing resale values, especially for smaller yachts suitable for family use.
🌊 Pros and Cons of Buying New vs. Pre-Owned Yachts
When considering yacht ownership, understanding the resale value implications of a new versus pre-owned yacht is essential:
New Yachts: Buying new offers customization options and the latest technology, but they depreciate rapidly in the first few years. Ideal if you plan to keep the yacht long-term.
Pre-Owned Yachts: These have already undergone significant depreciation, making them a more affordable option with better resale stability. Ensure thorough inspections and maintenance records before purchasing.
FAQ Section: Frequently Asked Questions on Yacht Resale Value 🛥️💡
Q1: Do certain yacht brands retain their value better?
Yes, yachts from brands known for quality and design, like Sunseeker, Azimut, and Beneteau, often retain better resale values. These brands attract more demand in the secondary market due to their reputation.
Q2: How much does a yacht depreciate each year?
On average, yachts depreciate by 20-30% in the first year, 35-45% by the third year, and about 50-60% by the fifth year. However, depreciation slows as the yacht ages, with well-maintained yachts from reputable brands holding better long-term value.
Q3: What features increase a yacht’s resale value?
Features such as eco-friendly systems, modern navigation technology, premium interiors, and high-quality build materials boost resale value. Upgrading these features can make your yacht more attractive to buyers.
Q4: Are sailboats or motor yachts better investments?
Sailboats generally depreciate slower than motor yachts due to lower operating costs and a broader appeal in certain markets. Motor yachts may depreciate faster but can still offer good value if well-maintained and from reputable brands.
Q5: Does yacht size affect resale value?
Yes, larger yachts often have different resale dynamics compared to smaller models. They may have slower depreciation rates but require more maintenance, which affects overall value.
Q6: How does the yacht market react to economic conditions?
Yacht resale values are sensitive to economic changes. In a strong economy, luxury assets like yachts see higher demand, positively impacting resale values. During downturns, demand and resale prices tend to decline.
Q7: When is the best time to sell a yacht?
Selling during peak seasons like spring and summer can attract more buyers, potentially leading to higher offers. Off-season selling may result in lower resale prices due to reduced demand.
Q8: What are the resale trends for eco-friendly yachts?
Eco-friendly yachts, equipped with energy-efficient technologies, have shown stronger demand in recent years. They are more appealing in today’s market focused on sustainability, positively affecting their resale values.
