Mother who is looking forward to Christmas: It’d be nice if you got the Chogokin* HAMA Landmark Robo DX you’ve been wanting.

Salaryman who resents this time of year: So damn cold! To hell with this season! Who made it legal to walk around in this weather!?

Nagi: Would you like some… 

Salaryman who resents this time of year: Huh? Are they working me so hard that I’m hallucinating now…?

Nagi: Would you like some handcrafted wreaths… 

Salaryman who resents this time of year: Waugh—!? W-What do you want!?

Nagi: This handcrafted wreath is the perfect decoration for Christmas. If you hang it up on your door, not only will it lift your mood with the Christmas spirit, it’s also imbued with prayers of prosperity and good harvest for the new year, as well as ward against evil spirits— 

Salaryman who resents this time of year: You’re one of those weirdos who pop up at the end of the year… Go away! I don’t have time to deal with the likes of you!

*walks away*

Nagi: Oh… 

Child who is excited for Christmas: Mama, that person… 

Mother who’s looking forward to Christmas: L-Let’s leave, Takashi-chan. Mama will make sure to report that suspicious person, okay?

*hurries away*

Nagi: …… 

Nagi: (Suspicious… I guess I should just crawl into a corner…)

Restaurant employee who’s prickly after working 15 days in a row: Hey! Don’t peddle your stuff in front of the restaurant! Shoo, shoo!

*Nagi jumps back*

Nagi: S-Sorry.

Nagi: *sigh* I can’t feel my hands anymore… 

Nagi: (Right… The weather forecast did say the temperature would fall below freezing at night…)

Nagi: (Sonia and I worked hard on making these wreaths together, so I’d like to sell as many as I can before it gets too late…)

Nagi: I should cover these with a handkerchief so that the snow doesn’t pile up on them… 

*bell chimes*

Man enjoying Christmas with his girlfriend: This restaurant is great!

Woman enjoying Christmas with her boyfriend: Yeah! Thank you for making the reservation~♪ 

Nagi: …Oh.

Nagi: (I can see two brothers inside the warm restaurant, digging into some turkey as they sit in a circle with their family…)

Nagi: (“Brother, the turkey legs are both mine, okay?”)

Nagi: (“You’re so naive. True connoisseurs know that the turkey oyster* is the best part…!)

Nagi: That’s all for the voiceover.

Nagi: …… 

Nagi: Yeah, I should just go. I need to get Sonia her treats, and a fried chicken sandwich… Ugh—

*Nagi falls*

Nagi: …The snow is so cold… Freezing me with no mercy… 

Nagi: (...I guess eating only tofu with barbeque sauce for three days straight was a bit too much…)

Nagi: (I might freeze to death in the middle of this big city—)

*Nagi blacks out*

??: Oi.

Nagi: (Ah… So they’ve finally come for me.)

???: …of yourself.

Nagi: (Huh… Angels sound a lot more… manlier than I’d thought…)

I love the Christmas movies they play at this time of year.

Family who come back for you when you’d thought they’d left you behind, being saved by an angel when you felt like dying*… I just like how these movies have something miraculous happen at the climax and reach a happy ending. 

It fills you with the kind of hope that says such a warm and welcoming world is right around the corner…

Nagi: This is… 

Nagi: (An electric hearth, fancy looking furniture, and silky sheets… It even smells heavenly… Woah, this fluffy bed could fit at least ten of me in it…)

Nagi: (And last but not least.)

Rabbit: Pui.

Nagi: (A bunny to cuddle with…)

Nagi: So this is what they call transmigrating into another world, huh…

Rabbit: Chu.

Nagi: Are you trying to guide me somewhere?

Lively woman’s voice: *sigh* I’m sure you’ll be able to manage it somehow.

Gruff male voice: Even if we prepared the same gifts as last time…

Cheerful girl’s voice: No way~ It’d be way too boring to use the same stuff again.

Lively woman’s voice: Stop grumbling and get to work.

Gruff man’s voice: Every single time, you manage to increase my workload at the end of the year. What a pain… 

Lively Woman’s voice: You wanna say that to my face?

Nagi: …… 

Nagi: Looks like this isn’t another world, but rather—

Nagi: A bunny café…

Sojun: Wrong.

Note:

Chōgōkin (超合金) - Meaning "Super Alloy", the term originated as a fictional material from which the robot Mazinger Z was built.

Oyster here refers to the meat near the spine of a fowl

Liguang: (The hospitality work from the other day… sure enough, moving the flower word art to a later date was no good. I'd like to keep hold of the tourists we can reliably draw in.)

Liguang: Kinugawa?

Sojun: I have obtained one of his drawings. Here.

Liguang: …Not bad.

Liguang: Apologies for the abrupt call.

Kiroku: Ah, no, um…

Wh… why, do you, need… m-me, Lu-san?

Liguang: I won't beat around the bush. Are you interested in teaching flower word art?

Kiroku: …Flower, word… art…?

Liguang: I hear you specialise in analogue art. Based on your skilled handling of the materials, I want to hire you as a flower word art instructor.

Kiroku: (Did Lu-san just, compliment me…?)

Um… thank, you very, much…

I do… enjoy, drawing… but… I've never… done, flower word art… before.

…Ah… but, it might be nice, to try?

Liguang: Giving it a go yourself is the quickest way, then. Let's get going.

Kiroku: …Huh? G-going… to… where?

Liguang: You'll understand once we get there. Sojun.

Sojun: Right away.

Kiroku: !?

Liguang: Don't be so panicked. Just stay calm and we'll arrive soon.

Kiroku: (This is, kidnapping…! Where are they taking me…!?)

Kiroku: (This is, Lu-san's house… It's huge. Excessively huge.)

Liguang: Let's get right to it. I've already seen what you can do. Could you learn flower word art, and become a valuable asset of Ward 4?

Kiroku: …Me, a… valuable asset?

Liguang: That's right. I have an example here. Start by trying to do it the way you want to.

*clack*

Kiroku: Doing, that… so suddenly…

Liguang: Just try.

Kiroku: Uu… o-okay…

*footsteps*

Linxing: Hey heeey! Is this the guy you want as an instructor?

Kiroku: -…!

Liguang: Don't run in the hallway, Linxing. And don't yell either. You'll frighten Kinugawa.

Linxing: So your name is Kinugawa-kun~! I'm Linxing! His younger sister, as you can probably tell!

Kiroku: Y… y-yeah.

Liguang: Look. I had Kinugawa try some flower word art.

Linxing: Woah! You made this, Kinugawa-kun? Your sense of style is insane!

Kiroku: !

(I-I got complimented again…!)

Th… thank, you… very much.

Linxing: But, there's a secret technique to making it e~ven better. It's very valuable, but I'll teach it to you!

Kiroku: …Um, like this…?

Linxing: Wow, amazing! You did it~! Really well, too!

Kiroku: …Um, th-thank…

Linxing: Okay okay, do this next!

Liguang: (He's even keeping up with Linxing's nonsensical teaching methods… he's exceeded my expectations.)

Linxing: You know, you're good at art, and tall and cool to boot, so I bet you're pretty popular, right~?

Kiroku: Huh… …no… I'm not, at, all.

Linxing: Wha~t!? They must have no taste! I wouldn't be able to miss you if I was your classmate~!

Kiroku: That…

Linxing: Ah~ but I guess it'd be boring if absolutely everybody noticed your charm…

I'm sure it'd be more fun if I could keep your good points all to myself. Y'know?

Kiroku: Ah, um…

Liguang: Kinugawa.

Kiroku: ! Y-yes!

Liguang: Just so you're aware, she does have a boyfriend.

Kiroku: Ah…

Linxing: Come o~n! You're way too overprotective! I was just complimenting him, Kinugawa-kun definitely wasn't thinking of it like that either~!

Liguang: Don't be absurd. You understand far too little of men's hearts. I'm saying this for Kinugawa's sake.

Linxing: Alright, alright. Jee~z. I'm sorry, okay Onii-chan? Now, let's keep going, Kinugawa-kun!

Kiroku: …Okay.

Haven’t touched BLEACH in a long time. Just haven’t been hyperfixated on it like I used to be. That will probably change when TYBW season 3 comes out. But, recently, I’ve been fixated on this really old self indulgent human AU that I came up with a bunch of lore for like 2 years ago and never got to write. So, I’ve started writing it out myself. Here are some miscellaneous happenings that have transpired so far in no particular order:

Ichigo and Jinta both called Kisuke a drag queen

Akon threatened someone with a screwdriver

A page long back and fourth teasing Shuuhei about how having a 69 tattooed on your face is very unfortunate.

Toshiro came out as a trans girl, and Ichigo offered her an old skirt from the school uniform that he owns. Toshiro is stunned and is genuinely grateful, that is until Ichigo ruins it by mentioning that she’ll have to pin it in the back, quote, “since you’re so small.”

Shunsui went to grab a bottle of beer from the fridge first thing in the morning and Nanao gave him such an intense stink eye that he just walked away and went back to bed

Shuuhei punched a mirror and then immediately regretted it. Kensei’s way of giving emotional support was to immediately call him a dumbass.

(Kensei then proceeded to drive Shuuhei to school on his motorcycle because he could tell he wasn’t doing well mentally)

Byakuya gets his son ice cream and tries to pretend it was just a one time indulgence for a job well done (In reality, Sojun-ko just asked for it and Byakuya cannot say no to kids for the life of him)

Rukia suggested throwing a party in the Kuchiki manor. Byakuya was fully caught off guard and said quote, “This is a noble manor, not some frat house.”

Rukia tells Yoruichi that she hesitated around her because Byakuya has a restraining order against her. Yoruichi tells her that it doesn’t matter because the restraining order is from Byakuya, not Rukia.

Shunsui almost cut his finger off trying to cut apple and banana slices. Then him and Jushiro’s sons Sogyono and Kotowari throw the banana slices at Jushiro’s face.

Akon was scolded twice for smoking indoors. Both times he slowly and deliberately stubbed out the cigarette on the furniture to annoy them.

In terms of weird-o Bleachy thoughts that rampage through my mind at various times, there is always this page from the TBTP arc:

And while this is a banger of a page in an arc full of them, my goober mind mostly telescopes in on this one panel:

Am I not supposed to wonder at this panel? Because here I am on a Friday wondering. More specifically, I am wondering: What am I supposed to take away here? And, what is it that I do actually take away here (today at least)?

As usual, I'll start by describing it because you have to start somewhere, I guess. This scene is a mostly pointless aside to the story, since I don't think we learn anything super substantive, plot-wise. What we do learn is that Byakuya is what passes for a "teenager" during this period, takes his training and role super seriously, and Yoruichi tortures plays with him on occasion.

The panel that draws my eye, however, seems to be communicating a few things at once: One, Byakuya realizes he has a guest. Two, that guest is Yoruichi. And three, Yoruichi greets young Byakuya tits out, which provides some color as to the nature of their relationship. I don't think either points two or three are revelations to the audience. Is anyone shocked the guest is Yoruichi? No, we've already spent some time with her in this arc and know she's definitely around. Also, is anyone really shocked that she and Byakuya have a teasing quasi-sibling relationship? Again, no, we've probably gathered as much since at least the SS arc.

For me, then, it's point one that scratches at the ole brain pan. What I am to make of Byakuya realizing he has a guest? Does he often receive guests at House Kuchiki? My guess is no. He looks sort of curious. The art isn't giving, say, razzle-dazzle anticipation, either (i.e., in that he is really keen on the guest being someone specific). I suppose you could squint really hard and say he might be hopeful as to who could be calling on him, but more in a diffuse "someone took time out of their day to see me" sort of way and less of a heart-skipping prayer that the guest is XYZ, who he's been dying to see again for ages.

I think this latter interpretation might be closer to the truth once the scene continues, and Byakuya goes from, "A guest for little ole me?" to this:

Which is just the zany shit I love to see from my Bleach characters. To be perfectly honest, I think Kubo does a pretty good job at nailing teenagers in all their ridiculous reaction formations and exaggerated responses to things (I say lovingly). However, I think that his relative curiosity ("A guest?") turned immediately to, "GO AWAY, YOU," could be read as he may have been excited or hopeful to receive a guest, one who is not Yoruichi. And, his overblown reaction to Yoruichi likely betrays the fact that even though she's a pain in his ass, he's pretty happy to see her.

So, what to make of all that. Well... perhaps we're supposed to take home the idea that perhaps Byakuya is isolated, even now. We get a hint of that at the very beginning of the scene:

Here, Ginrei (Byakuya's grandfather) notes that he is staying at the manor rather than the barracks, which implies that at least one close family member doesn't always come home. Given that Byakuya's father is the Vice Captain of Squad Six, it's likely his father has a similar schedule (i.e., periods of absence from the home where Byakuya lives). Combined with Byakuya's curiosity at receiving a guest and subsequent deflation at who that guest winds up being, perhaps we are supposed to understand that he's pretty lonely.

Now, before someone accuses me of going easy on Byakuya, I definitely think some of that loneliness is of his own making, given what a cocky brat he is to Yoruichi in these panels, a perspective that gets echoed by Kaien shortly afterward:

But, being a cocky brat is sort of a thing teens do on occasion. And, not having a lot of people to socialize with probably doesn't help with beating that quality out of someone learning how to behave appropriately.

Given how this arc shakes out in the end--with Yoruichi going into hiding to help a friend--the potential people left to call upon Byakuya dwindles further. Then, after his dad dies an unspecified amount of time later, it dwindles further still.

And so, on that thought, I end this post. Because what's Bleach without a little tragedy coupled with humor? (My personal favorite variety of Bleach.)

Bleach Returns 2024 Day 3: Shikai/Fav Friendship/Black Hole Disco

In the time travel story, Toshiro is good friends with Yoruichi's and Byakuya's fathers. He went to the academy with them and was a part of both of their divisions at one time: Toshiro being the former third seat of the sixth division under Ginrei Kuchiki, and Toshiro being the former lieutenant of the second division under Yusuke Shihouin.

Sojun is a canonical character, only shown in a character database book many years ago.

Yusuke is my OC, one I made for my story. Yes he was inspired by Chika's design. Leave me alone, I like Chika's design.
