Atem thought he was dying. The way his heart kept stuttering and his breath kept failing. A clear sign of oxygen deprivation was the pulse that kept pounding in his ears, and the way his hands were shaking. He stared at himself in the mirror, and wondered how he was going to face Yugi again. He looked absolutely wrecked.

All night had been like this.

All night Yugi had been at his side. Holding his hand at the mall while they had walked among their friends. It was a gesture between best friends, he’d assured himself. Nothing more. But you’d think it was a lie the way his nerves lit up like one of Kaiba’s blinky hi-tech consoles at the mere contact.

After shopping for a gift for Joey’s sister, their group had wandered into the arcade. Their group always found their way into the arcade.

Joey and Tristan had split off to play a racing game. Bakura and Malik had settled into a fighting game, and Teá had taken on the crowds surrounding the DDR machine. They’d crowded around the arcade machine, fingers mashing buttons, and hands working the joy-sticks furiously. Their elbows bumped, shoulders brushing, and laughter mingling. Atem remembered feeling breathless, light headed. He had wondered if the arcade was stuffier than usual, and after a half an hour he’d wanted to go run his head under some cool water.

The smaller members of their group had taken to sitting on laps.

Ryou had taken Bakura’s lap until the Yami had kicked him off, citing “a bony butt.” So, Ryou had nearly sat on Tristan’s lap before Duke caught his wrist and dragged him onto his.

“What? Aibou, no. No.” Atem was gesticulating, waving hands while he spoke. He never gesticulated—unless it was during a game, and he was jabbing fingers about—and Yugi knew this, and it was a dead giveaway that something was indeed wrong.

The pained look of doubt and disbelief darkened Yugi’s features, and made Atem feel wretched.

They were best friends, former soul mates, and his relationship with Yugi meant everything to him. He’d seen the way crushes, and romantic attraction could foil those friendships, and create a rift in relationships. He wanted to die before spoiling the closeness that he shared with Yugi.

And so he kept his traitorous heart to himself. He cursed that his feeling had become something other than platonic. That everyday he lived a lie, telling himself that things were just fine, and normal, even though he burned inside at every touch.

He owed Yugi everything. And he was determined to suck it up and not ruin everything. Even if it meant lying.

“It’s not you-“

“I tried to kiss your neck in the theater, and I’m sorry!” Yugi suddenly blurted out, eyes shut, and fists balled at his side. A furious blush stained his cheeks, nose, and ears. “I’m making things weird between us, and I’m... sorry.”

Words were not finding Atem. His heart had almost certainly stopped. His knees had given out and he was barely holding himself up with his arms braced against the counter. His brain ceased functioning. Atem.exe had quite literally stopped operating.

A tear slithered down Yugi’s red cheek. It was soon followed by a second on the other side. “You’re my best friend, and I’m ruining it because I love you. And everything I do is selfish because to you it’s just friends, and I should want that too, but instead I want you.” He dragged his wrist over his face, mopping away the tears. “I’m really sorry.”

“Yugi...” but the name only came out as a throaty whisper.

Yugi made a choked noise. Clearly struggling not to start sobbing. He was sensitive and cried easily. Something he hated about himself, but shouldn’t. It was something Atem always admired and adored about him. There was a kind of strength in being attuned to your emotions and being able to express them. Atem still struggled to express himself. But it was Yugi that had awakened his humanity again after 3000 years of being detached from it

About to break down, Yugi spun on his heel and started for the door.

Atem snapped his arm out and caught his wrist. The both of them froze.

“I have wanted you for months.” He tightened his grip on Yugi’s wrist as he said this. “And I thought it was me ruining everything. Please don’t cry.”

Yugi broke into a sob and the next thing Atem knew his light had thrown himself into his chest.

Shaking brown arms wrapped Yugi in a crushing embrace. And this time there wasn’t anything held back. Smaller arms snaked around to grab fistfuls of leather at Atem’s back, and for the first time it felt like their hearts were bared, vulnerable, without a guard.

Atem buried his nose in Yugi’s hair and let himself inhale. “I. Thought. I was dying. All. Day.”

“Why?” And there may have been the slightest lace of amusement.

“Because you kept being you. And touching me, and holding my hand, and squirming in my lap like some erotic dancer, and all I wanted to do was kiss you. So. Damn. Badly.”

“Oh,” Yugi mumbled against his collarbone. “So, you did notice.”

Atem’s body went rigid.

“The lap thing...” he breathed. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

“I would have done it in the projector booth, personally,” supplied Malik unhelpfully. He tried to squeeze around Bakura who was still taking up the entrance.

But Bakura grabbed his shoulder and dragged him backward before he made it two steps. “Let’s get out of here, Malik. I need a drink. A real one” He nodded at Yugi and Atem adding, “and you two are disgusting.”

“But I need to pee still!” Malik clawed at the doorframe in vain.

They watched him get dragged out of the room, the door swinging shut with their exit, and cutting off the rest of his protests.

Several moments passed in silence, and the situation seemed to crash down on them.

Yugi tentatively glanced up at Atem and worried his bottom lip. Whatever spell had overtaken them before was quickly dissipating in the wake of that intrusion.

“Uh...did you want to finish the movie?”

Atem blinked down at him with a lost expression.

“I have no idea what the movie was even about.”

They finally stepped apart, and another silence passed while they made a half-hearted attempt righting clothes. Neither looked at the other. Atem lamenting the circumstances of their first, second, third kiss, and Yugi realizing he’d been ready to just give it all up in a public restroom.

Finally Atem grabbed his hand and their eyes met again. Something wordless passed.

“Do you want to go home?” Yugi asked.

“Gods yes.”

Stellar Defense, Tremendous Grit Puts Inverse Past Baggers

BREA, CA. - The Inverse Softball Team prevailed under scorching heat as they managed to grind out one victory in their doubleheader on Sunday, proving that they can hang with the giants of the Brea softball league. Nasung took a 13-11 loss in their opening game against the Mother Truckers, marking the first time they didn’t get mercy-ruled. They followed up with a controlling 15-9 victory over the Double Baggers thanks to their spectacular defensive play and roster depth. 

Stars Of the Day

Chris “Slumpbuster” Lee proved to be the difference maker in game 1, limiting the Mother Truckers to 4 runs in the final four innings of the game after replacing an injured Danny Chun on the mound. He also hit 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, breaking out of his slump. 

Eric “Bored Intern” Chung and John Namchado both erupted with a 4-for-4 hitting performance while restoring the rightful name of the Black Sea with their stellar defense in the outfield. Chung delivered 5 RBIs and 4 runs with a home run while Nam also had a home run with 3 runs and 5 RBIs. 

“Lite work,” said Chung after the game. 

Inverse 11 - Mother Truckers 13

The Inverse offense got off to a slow start, stranding two runners in the first inning after Youngy Youngchado and MaJun Chungchado failed to bring them home. 

The Truckers wasted no time to jump in front, shelling out five runs in the first inning. 

Things got worse in the second inning as Inverse went down 1-2-3 while the Truckers tacked on three more runs. 

In the top of the third with runners on first and third, Paul Lee brought home the church’s first run with an RBI single. That was all the Inverse could muster as they trailed 8-1 in the third. 

In the top of the fourth, Youngy Kimchado sparked a rally, delivering a 1-run RBI double with runners on first and second with a hard groundball through the middle. Jun Chung followed with a sac fly and Matty Kimchado brought Young home with a RBI single, cutting the lead 8-4. 

Inverse managed to cut into the deficit heading into the final inning, trailing 13-10. However, they only managed to score once in the final inning for the loss.

Inverse 16 - Double Baggers 9

ManEric MaChungdo got the game started with an inside-the-park homerun with a laser towards center field to give Inverse a 1-0 lead. The Double Baggers responded with a brief five-run rally to take a big lead. 

Daniel Klept Cho was joining the team at the bench, providing oddly motivating cheerleading, comparing the Inverse boys to the feudal Korean Army of Admiral Yi Sun Shin.

Somehow that sparked a huge rally in the top of the third. Trailing 6-1 with two outs, MaPaul LeeChado and MaDavid KimChado got on second and third and Eric Chung drove them in with an opposite field laser to cut the lead 6-3. 

Jason Ko followed with a single and MaJohn Namchado cleared the bases with a three-run Inside-the-Park homerun to tie the game. 

Unfortunately, Young killed the inning with a pop fly to end the inning. 

The Baggers tagged two runs in the bottom of the third, but Inverse got stymied in the top of the fourth. Problems arose in the bottom of the fourth when Jun Chung had to pull out of shortstop due to cramping quads, leading to David Panda Kim to fill in at second while the aging Jason Ko shifted to short. The Baggers added one more insurance run to lead 9-6. 

In the top of the fifth, with two outs, Paul Lee drove Jason Park home with an RBI single and after Panda got on base with a double, Eric knocked a two-run RBI single to tie the game. 

After Jason Ko crushed an RBI double for the lead, Nam kept the momentum going with an RBI triple. Young closed the rally with an RBI single to give Nasung a 11-9 lead, but was tagged out on a base-running blunder on a line drive hit by Jun Chung.

Danny Chun shifted to second for the remainder of the game and handled the spot well, helping Inverse keep the Baggers scoreless in the fifth. 

Matt Kim led off with a huge triple and was brought home by Danny to start the sixth inning.

Later with one out and bases loaded, Victor “Soggy” Aguado launched a deep sacrifice fly to give Inverse a 13-9 lead, but Paul Lee popped out to then the sixth. 

After another scoreless inning, thanks to the Black Sea’s defense, the Inverse boys were ready to launch another rally for insurance. With one out and runners on first and second, John Nam slapped an RBI single and Youngchado followed with a base-clearing double that hit the fence to push the lead 16-9. 

In the bottom of the 7th, Chris Lee slammed the door. After giving up a walk, he induced a pop fly to shallow center for the first out. He then surrendered a single to put runners on first and second, but was helped out by Victor’s stellar defending when he fielded a grounder and tagged the runner at third followed by a bullet throw to first for a game-winning double play. 

Game Notes:

- John Nam came a double shy from performing the first cycle in Inverse Softball history. His performances in the last two games has elevated him to MVP talks this season, possibly his second in three seasons. 

- Chris Lee pitched to his first ever career victory, having gone winless in his first season and being absent from the mound during the third season. It was his first pitching appearance since the semifinal match of the second season. 

- Young Kim has failed to refrain from talking trash at other Korean churches, subtly firing shots at Lifestream.

He has also kept uttering “Bury ‘Em” in passing reference of Berean Church, and passive-aggressively posting softball highlights on his IG to bait a Korean church into an beatdown Exhibition. 

- Inverse will play a rematch against the Double-Baggers next Sunday, July 28 at 7:15 PM.

Inverse Puts On The Greatest Show In Second Straight Victory

BREA, CA. - It was the greatest challenge the Inverse Softball Team has ever faced. Losing six players due to injury or family obligations, the Nasung squad was short one fielder and had to take on the notorious Bass Kickers in a must-win game of the season. The odds were against Inverse. They were missing outfield maestro/speed demon Eric “Take The L” Chung and Dadbod Ball Crusher Jason “Overseer” Ko from the lineup and were facing a team comprised of former high school baseball players.

But in the wise words of legendary circus dude PT Barnum, “Impossible comes true, it's taking over you.” Inverse was the greatest show. They humiliated the Basskickers with a 24-13 beatdown. They are now in 4th place with a 2-5 record and a shot at playoffs.

“We played a smart game today,” said Manager Chris Lee. “Their pitcher was wild and we took advantage. They were clearly frustrated. We anticipate a very chippy game for the season finale.”

“Bass Kickers?” exclaimed one of the player’s moms after the game. “More like got their basses kicked!” (This legit happened according to Chris) (Yes their moms came out to the game. ROFL!!!) (No disrespect to moms. Moms are cool and have all my appreciation and respect. Especially Owen’s mom for bringing waters that one week! That was legit.)

Pontius “Aluminum” Lee had his first perfect game, hitting 4-for-4 wtih two RBIs and three runs. Matt “Pip” Kim went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and 3 runs while Young “Greatest Showman” Kim was 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. Danny Chunbron had his first triple-triple of his career with three runs and three RBIs while hitting 4-for-6.

The first inning nearly looked dire for the Inverse boys as John “MVP” Nam and Jun “Glory Hog” Chung were put out. However, following a single by Young and a walk by Chris, Matt drove in both boys with an RBI single. Danny and Jason “Bloops” Park followed with RBIs of their own to build a 5-0 lead.

The Bass Kickers looked to respond aggressively, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first.

Jun went full glory in the top of the second with a solo inside-the-park shot to make it 7-4.

The Bass Kickers answered back with some sizzling offense, taking advantage of several Inverse errors to lead 8-7. The two teams went back-and-forth as the game went on, and the Inverse defense showed more life as Matt Kim saved Inverse from some runs with a bullet throw from left field to throw out a runner at third. John Nam also made up for Eric Chung’s absense with a handful of dazzling catches at centerfield.

“We knew outfield had to step it up because we did not have our defensive MVP,” said John Nam. “We played with heart and hustle and it showed on the field. Shout out to Matt Kim for throwing out that guy at third. No one runs on Matt Kim!”

Trailing 10-8 at the top of the fifth, the game began to unfold.

Inverse lit it up and didn’t come down.

The sun couldn’t stop them now.

They put on the greatest show.

Inverse tacked on a bajillion runs in the fifth, taking 5 walks while Matt Kim had a huge base-clearing triple, while Young drilled a fence-grazing double with the bases-loaded to make it 18-10. The Inverse boys went through the lineup twice in that inning. Then in the final inning, Inverse mercilessly took walks and slapped in more runs, including a smoking line drive by Danny and an RBI liner from Victor “Soggy” Aguando.

Demoralized and dreading the second half of their doubleheader, the Bass Kickers surmounted a half-hearted rally that ended on two diving catches by John Nam and a easy fly out caught by Soggy.

After the game, the Bass Kickers delivered half-hearted postgame high fives while one of the players sarcastically remarked “Good eye.”

He was salty cuz Inverse took 8 walks total in the last two innings.

Inverse finally has a non-church rival. They legit hate us...I think.

But for now, lets enjoy this two-game winning streak.

Game Notes

- Chris Lee has gone 1-6 the last two games and expects to be hitting in the bottom half of the lineup until he breaks out of this slump. He’ll be batting in the top of the line in two weeks.

- The players whose girlfriends showed up to the game hit a combined 9-for-10 6 RBIs, 5 runs, and 3 doubles. “Having a girlfriend is much better than steroids,” said a player who refused to be named.

- Inverse is now 1-0 when Young plays “Greatest Showman” before the game. He’s trying really hard to convince the team to adapt this as their theme song.

- Eric Chung will now bat 12th to get his RBI opportunities.

- Jun Chung was invited by Faith Community to help them in their game against Bass Kickers last week. His scouting report “They’re not that good.” has been the rallying cry this past week.

- Elisha Lee might get fired for not recording videos.
