😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers?

No, never.

I have never made a choice in one of my stories with the specific purpose of being mean to my readers, playfully or otherwise. Simply because I don't think that the way I want my readers to feel should impact the story to that degree. That's a slippery slope that can accidentally lead to certain characters feeling OOC or the story taking weird turns just because the author wants to pander to their audience.

Also, I just don't relate to the "I'm a writer and must therefore be mean to both my characters and my readers" concept. If you do, that's awesome — all the power to you! But that's not me. I write stories because I love the characters or the concepts or the world or all of the above. And so that's what I'm going to stay true to, which means that what happens in my stories happens because it makes sense for the characters, not because I want to lead my readers to feel a certain way.

I also don't want to fall into the trap of thinking that I can predict what my readers will think and feel, nor do I want to force them to feel a specific emotion. I prefer to write the story and then just let people feel whatever comes naturally to them. And, in some ways, that might be why my writing is so effective? Because I write with the character in mind, describing what they are feeling, not what feeling I want the readers to feel. And, more often than not, that seems to result in my readers feeling the same thing as the characters.

And I think some readers can tell that I'm not trying to force them? I leave it to them to experience the story as they see fit, because it's really not my job to tell them what to feel. I'm just here to tell a story.

But, all of that said, I am guilty of teasing my readers about things that I know they will react to. So it might sometimes seem like I'm doing it on purpose, but I promise I'm not. I just seize the chance to be a little shit when the opportunity presents itself xD

Finally getting to it! (After I had to figure out what the hell is On Repeat..) so @thegalwhorants bestie, here I am with a playlist that will surely shock you!

1. I AM NEXT TO YOU by Alight The Night - Very unsurprising and I lovingly blame @plantsarepeopletoo for this. The OF brain must OF at all costs. Also, it's 3 y.o demon baby's favorite song.

2. Baggage by Tilly Birds - apparently THIS is the one I listened to most this month (?). I guess someone had to fill the position lol

3. As I have no actual knowledge in Japanese I will not even attempt - the theme song from My Beautiful Man Eternal. Which I have been obsessed with since I watched the film.

4. ไม่ปล่อยมือ (coming of age) by Billkin - I love this song so much and it didn't even register with me until the #5ql game... btw, hope I got the name right in Thai 🫣

I pay attention to the colors in shows now and I just want to tell you that it's all your fault

@sofapup17, I wouldn't be a self-proclaimed color demon if I wasn't ruining everyone's day by popping up randomly on y'alls dash rambling about colors.

As a demon, I'm always happy when people blame me for the gift of knowledge, and as someone who teaches for a living, it makes me even happier when anyone learns from what I post. Especially, when that person can apply it to the media they enjoy.

I'm glad that you are noticing the colors but always remember - They are there to support the story, not to distract from it, so if they get too distracting, just curse my name or put in ask in my inbox, so we sort through the colors together.

I'm always here lurking in my corner of the internet, horribly ignoring the colors in Kiseki: Dear to Me but desperately looking for them in Naughty Babe.

I am TRYING to find a new tdj fic to read but every time I keep clicking out because you've spoiled me. So now I'm just going to have to reread one of yours. I don't like what you're doing. I DON'T LIKE IT YOU HEAR ME

I'm... sorry? x'D I swear I'm not doing it on purpose! Like, I AM trying to write the best fics I possibly can, but it's kind of out of my hands how they resonate with my readers. Though I will admit that this isn't the first time I've heard something along these lines. My wife, in particular, has complained about this phenomenon many times xD

And, tbh, in the case with The Devil Judge? One of the reasons why I've read so few fics myself in that fandom is because I realised pretty quickly that I wouldn't find what I was looking for. Not in the sense where I think that the other fics are bad, just that they didn't have the characterisation, themes, etc. that I wanted.

So I decided to write my own. And sometimes I pass mostly unnoticed in fandoms because I honestly write pretty "boring" and "vanilla" stories? Like, I rarely explore the kinkier sides of fandom or the more popular tropes. More often than not, I write post-canon fics or complex AUs. And the demand isn't as high for that, I guess?

But if there is one pattern I've noticed it's that while I may have fewer readers than the popular writers, I seem to have a pretty strong impact on the ones who DO end up reading my fics. Along the lines of what you're describing here — i.e. that I unintentionally set the bar way too high.

Which, uh, yeah. Sorry? No refunds? x'D

TL;DR: Sometimes I feel like the fandoms I post fanfics in are fragile ecosystems and I'm an invasive species.

I mean, I DO put a lot of effort into them. Sometimes a little too much, even x'D

And sometimes I wish I could read them like a reader. Like, there are times when I can get close to it, if I suddenly read a fic I haven't read in a couple of years, but it's never quite the same since I always know, deep down, that it's mine.

But, speaking of that, I'm considering reading Who Holds the Devil from the beginning. I don't think I've done that in... uh... a year? I think I reread it before writing chapter 22. But since then I've just kept going and trusted that I remember the story well enough without having to reread it.

Because I like to live dangerously, clearly.

But yeah. I'm considering actually rereading it now. Partly to get back into it but also just... because I'm curious? I wonder what it's like to read it from the beginning. The only thing holding me back is the fact that Ga On was so depressed at the beginning and I hate to see him sad x'D

(I actually had this crazy thought that, just maybe, I could do some sort of live reaction/director's commentary of my own fic (at least some of the earlier chapters) because I bet I'll run into a lot of stuff that will make me go "OH YEAH, THIS SHIT." But that also sounds like a lot of work so maybe not )

As the description says, it's not exactly a soundtrack but rather a collection of songs with suitable vibes and lyrics. And by "suitable vibes" I mean pretty dramatic, often heartbreaking, occasionally sweet, kinda sexy, vaguely desperate, and, of course, just a tiny bit dangerous. And yes, some of the songs are connected to specific events that already have or will happen in the fic ;)

More songs might be added as I find them and they're in no particular order for the time being.

And, before anyone asks: No, there is not a single song by GOT7 on there at the time of writing, mainly because I haven't actually listened to them x'D (well, yet. I'll get to it eventually >_> )

Honestly, I'm the worst person to do this x'D I don't use Spotify all that often so right now all songs on my On Repeat list are from the Who Holds the Devil playlist I made. So this turned into less of a "what music do you listen to" and more of a "let me explain why I put these specific songs on my Who Holds the Devil playlist." BUT I guess there might be an audience for that, too?

So let's go, I guess?

1. Heroes Rise - Tommee Profitt, Sam Tinnez

Definitely more of a Ga On-focused song what with that whole "hero" thing he's got going on and his attempts to make a change in the world. But there are also definite hints of Yo Han in that whole "heroes never die" aspect. Because while what he did was technically illegal and he's more of an antihero than anything else, he IS definitely still a hero. And what he did will be remembered for a long time to come, if nothing else because it gave rise to new heroes (see what I did there? ;D)

This is just a very good song to convey the overarching plot of heroes and the power they hold — but also the amount of conviction and dedication it requires.

2. I Didn't Ask For This - Beth Crowley

I am OBSESSED with this song right now, specifically in relation to Yo Han. There are parts of this song that hits just right for his character, both in the original drama and Who Holds the Devil. I mean:

Take what's left Of my fractured heart Bloodstained 'cause The pieces are so sharp

*chef's kiss*

But also:

*pterodactyl screech*

3. The Sacrament - HIM

My teenage emo phase coming back to bite me in the ass x'D No, but really, there's just something with this song that vibes with the whole religious themes of The Devil Judge. And the longing, desperation, and reverence of Who Holds the Devil.

Also, I just really, really love that piano. So sue me.

4. Die For You - PENTAGON

This one is pretty self-explanatory, I feel. Very much Ga On at the start of Who Holds the Devil, desperately longing for Yo Han. It also perfectly conveys his recklessness and just how far he'd be willing to go to be forgiven for his mistakes.

5. Dancing's Done - Ava Max

Possibly added during a bit of a YOLO moment, not going to lie xD BUT, there are definitely parts of the lyrics that apply:

I wanna give into your dark temptation I wanna touch you like nobody does, oh People like you and me were born to run So where we going when the dancing's done? (Oh)

Because Ga On sure has hell wants to give in to Yo Han's dark temptation, even if he pretends that he doesn't.

6. A Little Bit Dangerous - CRMNL

Yo Han. Through and through. It also has a bit of the same cheekiness as the original soundtrack, which I like. And, I mean:

7. I Want You To Want Me - Chase Holfelder

Another Yo Han song. Like, if you've read The Gentle Light? You know why this song is here. You know about the desperation and the yearning and the need. So, really, I HAD to put this on the list.

8. Let Me Be Your Armor - Assemblage 23

I am SO glad this song made it onto the list because this one actually requires an explanation. It's one that might not make a lot of sense in terms of style (it definitely has a different vibe than the rest) BUT. The lyrics. The LYRICS. Like, babes. Listen to the lyrics. Listen to the lyrics ALL THE WAY THROUGH and then tell me this isn't Yo Han (as he sees himself).

This is a song I've had in my folders for literal YEARS (a friend sent it to me as a mood song for one of my OCs) and the moment I decided to make this playlist, I KNEW this song had to be on it.

9. A Dangerous Thing - AURORA

Honestly, I'm not sure if I need to explain this one all that much. It kind of speaks for itself in a lot of ways. Though I WILL say that while the dangerous thing is Yo Han in most situations, just maybe, there might be times when it's Ga On. Especially in Who Holds the Devil.

10. Addicted - MONSTA X

Look. I know we haven't really gotten to that part yet, but they be horny, okay? Desperate and horny. And very much addicted to each other. What more do you want me to say? xD

(for real, though, MONSTA X sure know how to make desperate and horny songs. Mercy is even worse, in the best way possible).

Oh gosh, sorry to hear you’ve been getting lots of critiques recently. Even when it’s valid and solicited criticism can be rough, and the out of the blue stuff is always worse :/ And I say that as someone who works in the arts for a living.

I wish I had something better to say than that every artist you admire has likely felt the same way at one point or another, as even the best of the best of the best get complaints, but I don’t, so know at least that you’re in good company. (In theatre we actually have a saying that the day you can truly call yourself a professional is the day you get your first really bad review, so I always take comfort in the universality of the experience, even if it super fucking sucks lol)

I know I could also tell you that your writing is phenomenal and for every person who has a complaint there’s a bunch more who are having the BEST time (myself included xD), but I also know that doesn’t fix it when someone’s made you doubt yourself. For the record though, I will say it. Your writing IS phenomenal, and it DOES bring both me and others quite a lot of joy. I get very excited every time I see you’ve updated (either fic that I’m reading xD), and I find it genuinely a bonus that this particular story is so long. Because it means that the experience of reading it for the first time doesn’t have to be over yet.

I’m VERY much rambling now, but try and be kind to yourself is I guess at the heart of what I’m saying. Take care of yourself, take your time, and come back to things when you’re ready. You’re allowed to feel hurt, or doubtful, or whatever, and if time is what you need to take care of yourself, then you should take it <3.

To be honest, I would be genuinely surprised if I was somehow able to avoid getting criticism. It's just a natural part of posting online, it would seem, no matter one's skill level or the fandom.

And, usually, I can handle it pretty well. It just so happens that everything piled up on the same day and that got a little overwhelming. It honestly felt a bit like the universe was ganging up on me for no apparent reason xD

Thank you so much for your kind words, though 💜 It's true that there are no immediate fixes to the kind of doubts that arise from unsolicited criticism, but it certainly helps to know that there are people who enjoy what I do. Because, in the long run, it's not about writing the most perfect, flawless fic, but rather sharing the joy and excitement I feel over the stories that I write. So thank you so much for taking the time to tell me 💜

And yeah, I'm doing my best to rest right now, partly because I did end up getting sick. So I've mostly been drawing highly questionable Strangers From Hell fanart and, earlier today, I hyper-fixated for hours and randomly did a playlist for Who Holds the Devil. Which is VERY unexpected since I don't really connect music to my writing?

I blame @sofapup17 who made a wonderful playlist for my Strangers From Hell fanfic, which I've been looping while drawing the aforementioned fanart xD (and I also stole three songs from it to my own playlist ;D ) And that of course made me wonder if I could do one, too. Turns out that I can! It's hella long but, uh, that's both on-brand and appropriate considering the fanfic, I guess? I honestly didn't expect to find as much music as I did.

So yeah. While I'm not writing on Who Holds the Devil right now, I'm keeping busy with other creative projects. There never seems to be a shortage of those, somehow x'D

Okay, so shows. Ten of them. Let's see...

1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - this has to be my number one comfort show. I have watched it soooo many times I cannot even tell you how many. Plus Faith was my first girl crush, so this show has a place in my heart forever!

2. Good Morning Call - if we're talking comfort shows then this has to be on the list. It's a silly Japanese show about two high school students who get scammed into living together (spoiler: they fall in love).

3. Community - if you've seen some of my posts, you can already guess this is one of my favorite shows. Sadly, not many people around appreciate this show, so I must laugh at my own Community references...

4. Kabe-Koji - I LOVE this show! It is funny, and smart, and clever. The characters are delightful and I just love them so much. I can watch this show a million times and it will always make me feel good.

5. The Mighty Boosh - if you like the absurd and don't know about this show, what are you still doing here?! Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt are geniuses! I would also recommend their live show. The show is insane and I just love it.

6. The IT Crowd - just a show about how insane it is to work in IT. And as a bonus, if you watch it enough times you can remember the entire phone number for the emergency services and you won't need to email about fires...

7. Love Mechanics - I have no idea why, but this show is seriously one of my favorite BLs. I love Yin and War and I don't think anyone else could have played this specific story better.

8. Bad Buddy - has to have a place of honour as it was my gateway drug to BL. I love the story and the honesty of the characters.

9. Semantic Error - I have no idea why, but I found myself just going back again and again to watch this. Also, I'm starting to see a pattern here. So, yeah, I'm an enemies to lovers person, I guess...

10. Only Friends - I do not care that the show is still airing. It is making this list because it is getting me closure on soooo many things that I cannot just leave it out!
