School Diary: Design Studio 3 Finals

My finals for Design Studio 3 last semester. This is luxury wear inspired by Fashion Intimates

To complete the look i made a purse/bag from scratch. Decided to use rubber place mats that is usually used in the kitchen and in the bathroom. A play on the mix of fabric was done by pairing the unconventional material with leather trimmings.

School Diary: Philippine Airlines Uniform Design Proposal

Tbh this is a long overdue post but anyway, for our Design Studio 2 finals last semester we were tasked to design a flight attendant uniform for Philippine Airlines. 

I like how every airline, especially international ones put a twist onto their flight attendant uniforms. I think it's a great way to kick off someone's perception of a country's story before they even step foot onto it. As of now, my favorite one was the one from Singapore Airlines.

This was my quick sketch of the design via CAD before all the changes.  

I have a friend (Hi Jonalee!) who's currently working for PAL as a flight attendant, so i did had some ideas what the current uniform looked like. 

Trying to stay away from the typical corporate wear look (blazer-pencil skirt? you know it!), i went with something more modern and a bit more casual looking, but still presentable and sophisticated. The design was a bit of a risk as i honestly was pretty skeptical how to execute it in a week! 

To make it more patriotic, i mixed and match the colors from the flag of the Philippines. Blue, red, white…you know the drill. 

To add a modern twist the colors were divided differently in different panels. 

Added a tribal looking mini scarf to compliment PAL uniforms trademark which is their scarves. 

For the skirt, i went with a white one because i think that it looks brighter and it goes well with the white panels on the top. 

Gotta thank my friend PIA for modelling the design for me during the defense! Glad how everything turned out.

School Diary: Historical Roots

This post is 2 months late but here it is anyway. For our design studio class which is Roots of Philippine Fashion, we went for a field trip to Taal, Batangas. The said location is known to house many historical residences just like the ones in Vigan, Ilocos Norte.  

We also dropped by their famous historical churches and it's nice to see how well they actually preserved it. 

We had a lovely lunch as well! They prepared  a sumptuous lunch for us featuring the dishes popular in Taal, Batangas. 

We were able to meet the owner as well! Hi Sir! 

Just when we thought it was over, we were asked to head downstairs for a photoshoot. We originally thought it was just selfies and group photos but wait for it….

We actually dressed up just like how our ancestors used to dress up! Everyone was given a photo opportunity which was pretty cool.

School Diary: DIY accessories? why not!

We had to create an accessory for Entrep Class. This class is not really about the craft but rather the idea of selling it  and computing the cost sheets so i decided to just create something easy peasy for this. If you wanna recreate this, the keep reading!

Here's what you'll be needing:

1. Silk Ribbons

2. Loops

3. Locks

4. Accessory Pliers

I got all of this from Carolinas in Glorietta btw. I am no professional when it comes to accessory making but it turned out okay so...

First thing you need to do is tie a knot around the loop like this. 

Do the same thing on the other ribbons. And you should come up with something like this.

Start braiding your ribbons till you reach the end of it and secure it with another loop with a lock attached to it. And voila there you have it!You can cut out the excess ribbons at the end but i decided to keep mine in place :) Hope you guys liked that and let me know if you decide to try it!

School Diary: Shirt Designing

Few days ago i blogged about 2 exhibits that we had to visit for Trends class and for our homework, we had to design 2 shirts inspired by it. So that weekend, i did the shirt and this is what i came up with. For Art Wearable Exhibit, the one held at Yuchengco Museum, this is what i came up with. 

Honestly speaking, when i went into the Art Wearable Exhibit i expected to see CLOTHES. Surprisingly, there was not one bit of it. What i saw were beautifully crafted accessories and some sculptures. So when i was about to design my shirt, i swear i had no idea where to begin. 

But i looked at the pictures i took again and realized one thing. The very reason why it was called ART WEARABLE in the first place.All the artists used things that may come unusual to us, but they were able to create something beautiful out of it. 

That is why i decided to use the back of the CDs to decorate my shirt. Not only because it's something that's unusual for a shirt decor but also because it's reflective=which for me symbolizes that it reflects how talented all the designers from the exhibit are. I did not choose just one or two designers as inspiration for my shirt, because i think that they're equally talented in their own craft. So i chose to design a shirt, inspired by all of them :) 

My second shirt was for the Kusama exhibit held at Ayala Museum. If you guys don't know who the artist behind the exhibit is, her name is Yayoi Kusama. Famous for her "Polka Dots" 

I never really heard about her till now. When i went into the exhibit with my friend Aya, i was pretty blatant about the fact that i did not get why she was so famous. Cause all i saw was polka dots. So doing the shirt was a bit of a challenge since my professor clearly told us "no polka dots allowed" YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. hahaha

So i had no choice but to research more about her and the stories about her polka dots, if ever there really is a story behind it...And infact, there is! Turns out, Yayoi Kusama had a pretty rough childhood. She even had hallucinations on polka dots. Her art was more on showing her obsessions to things like polka dots, and SEX.

 So for my shirt design i decided to paint an abstract. Because i think that abstract painting is a way of an artist to really express himself or herself. Abstract art gives you freedom. You can freely stroke and paint whatever and still call it art. That is how i wanted to interpret Yayoi Kusama. Because for me, Her Art is EXPRESSION. She had the freedom to express herself through her paintings not caring what people think about it. People like me who judged her art at first by saying "what the heck, they're just polka dots". But instead of using dark colors, i used Glow in the Dark Paints because i wanted to dwelt away from her dark side. I am obsessed with anything that brings happiness to people. Well let's just say, Bright and Fun Colors does that to me.

School Diary: Let's play Barbie

Last Thursday, i helped out on my friends' project. They had to do a photoshoot and i helped by doing Rhea's makeup. For the shoot, i had to give her a natural look. 

I'm no pro when it comes to doing makeup, but i do it on other people every once in a while. For fun. Rhea's features were great so i decided to just play around and enhance it. I gave her a full brow look to frame her face.

I started of by using the Makeup Forever HD foundation which is perfect for photos. Since i was going for the natural look, i decided to use the Naked 2 palette and play around the colors: Foxy, chopper and tease; Rhea had pretty long lashes and after using the Benefit they're real mascara, it looked even longer and fuller.

For the cheeks i used the NAKED flushed palette. To finish of the look, i used MAC's lipstick in the color faux. What do you guys think? 

Who says you can't wear makeup and still look natural? Makeup was made to enhance features, not hide it. Remember that. chos! Here's a closer look!

I brought my camera that day too and you guys know how much i love taking beauty shots of other people. Here are some of my shots that day!!!! Shall we?

We then headed to Ayala triangle after hair and makeup.

On with the shoot, i decided to take a few snapshots too!!!. AAAAH photography will forever be the love of my life.

First Up is Essa! This cotton candy hue on this garment is L O V E. And the fact that they actually did idk spray painted this? i'm not really sure but i have to give them props for that. It is so pretty! HAHAHHA

HEHEE Did you guys like that? It was a fun shoot!!!! We ate at Bonchon after the shoot cause we were starving. I like photoshoots like this. Photoshoots that doesn't feel like photoshoots. It's just like a bunch of people having fun together. Till next time guys :)

School Diary: 13 Days Collage Challenge

I didn't have much to work with, i was mostly indoors that week so most of the things i had was from the condo. I didn't want the collage to look like crap so i decided to paste it all together in one day and make it look like ma-icollage lang but rather make it look coherent, like a 3D artwork.

And lastly, Gold Chain as my interpretation to the pork barrel issue. It's funny even politics played a part in this one. We also designed 2 shirts over that weekend as homework too which i will be blogging about soon! 

The homework doesn't end there, from all the 14 items in total, we had to incorporate everything in one design. Here's what i came up with. No more, no less. It was a fun homework over all, just takes a lot of your time you know.

School Diary: Paper Doll

For History Class, we had to make a gown for a paper doll inspired by either Baroque or Rococo Period. I liked the silhouette from the Rococo better so i based the design from their costumes. 

Instead of doing the usual paper doll made out of paper... i decided to actually use fabric. Because i wanted to show that their garments had 3 layers, it would be kind of harder to interpret that with just paper. I had no idea it's gonna be quite tricky sewing a garment this small. I originally thought it would be easier since it's really small and it will take less time to make. BUT, hell no. The fact that it's smaller, actually makes it much harder. I handstitched the fabric instead of running it in the machine because i was afraid i might ruin it. It took me about 3-4 hours to finish it and i'm really happy how it turned out. 

I present to you, my very first haute couture. CHOS!

School Diary: Art Exhibits

Last Thursday, i went to 2 art exhibits in Makati. It was the I love Kusama exhibit at Ayala Museum and the Art Wearable at Yuchengco Museum. 

We had to do this for our Trends Class Project. I had mixed emotions about it because this past week i had to focus all my time on studying for the board exam and giving away few hours for this 2 exhibits didn't sound appealing to my ears. But after actually here, i'm glad i did. 

Sadly, camera's were not allowed in the I love Kusama exhibit :( If you guys are not familiar with the person named Yayoi Kusama, there's this thing called Google. Her style of Art is not exactly my style. It's a little bit too weird for me but it's her ART and seeing how much work she has put into every piece is something worth our attentions.

Our next stop was the exhibit at the Yuchengco Museum at RCBC plaza. What actually caught my eye was the work of Botong Francisco. There's just stones but it's such a beauty.   

I went there with my friend Aya and i swear we were laughing 75% of the time that we were there. We had our personal favorites at the Kusama exhibit and we still laugh everytime we talk about it. My friend Iza was there too! 

This was probably my favorite from the Art Wearable Exhibit and i swear this photo does no justice to how beautiful it was!!!! 

I think that all the designers exerted effort on their craft and no doubt all their hardworks had paid off. I think the exhibit is still open for few more days so go visit while you still can!

School Diary: KASA Magazine

Ever wondered how a magazine is being put up?? Truth is...I never wondered. haha But i had to. For our midterms project in Trends Class, we were tasked to publish a whole magazine on our own. Yes, on our own.

I chose the name, KASA magazine because i wanted it to be more personal. KASA= Katrine SAlvador. Get it? Get it? hahaha

Individual work means I had to do everything. To lessen the burden, i marked "modelling" of my list. Well, i can't imagine how stressful it would have gotten being the model /stylist/ makeupartist and photographer all at once. hahaha!

Instead, i asked my friends from highschool if we could do a little shoot. 

The shoot was rather fun than stressful actually. We literally haven't seen each other in months so it somehow turned out to be our mini reunion. 

I provided all the clothes and accessories for the shoot, the back of my car looked like a wardrobe..nah more like a mess actually!! haha.

The shoot went on and it was funny because it was not like a legit shoot at all. It's like we're just messing around like we normally do, except there are camera's around. lol

But on a serious note, here are some of my favorite shots from the shoot! 

For the first frames, i asked my model to wear one of my own designs. The Greek architecture of Mt. Carmel was a perfect background for it.  

The next outfit was inspired by Miami. It had a touch of Summer in it. And it screams, "so i'm heading to the beach, you wanna tag along?"

And ofcourse, the last frames ended up in the cover of KASA magazine. Inspiration behind this is Barbie meets Bohemian Fashion. For the cover, i wanted it to be my style. Something i would personally wear on a daily basis. And i think my diy flower crown was a perfect finish to the look.

I wanted the cover to actually be something that would make you look twice, but not think twice on reading it. Basically, it was suppose to catch attention. That's what KASA magazine is about.  

    P.S. this project made me think that i could probably start doing amateur photoshoots again. Like for predebut or something. Let me know if interested so we can negotiate!
