This is not the full picture for me (an really sounds like a SoDeep by someone who thinks easy modes shouldn’t be allowed). Games can give negative emotions - just not pointless ones.

The entire souls genre - from the success to the very idea it became a genre name - is proof that making players loose and wait is immensly popular.

Game’s can’t really be pointlees though without something huge to back it up. There is one that comes to my mind - a game on Steam that is essentially ‘walk at a snails pace and do nothing for ages to feel the weight of passage of time’. It didn’t have the best reception for a reason: it wastes your time.

We all know Ullysess is boring and a slog to get trough. It’s got writing style (and historical value) to even it out.

If a game wants to bore or annoy you, it needs to have something in exchange or a way to learn some skill to get rif of becoming bored/annpyed.

People make a lot of noise about ‘you choice matters - lol, no it doesn’t games like the Telltale ones. I understand the root of the issue, but for me it allows me to decide what kind of character goes trough a planned journey. Nice? Selfish? Kind? Cruel? This evens out linear plot for me.

It’s subjective, but clearly you can even out something people dislike - and problem is when that balance goes wrong.

really hitting this realization of like. it actually sucks that it's considered bad game design to, purposefully or not, give a player rough/negative feelings

if there's any argument at all against games being art it's the fact that we've all decided it's bad game design to take something away from a player, or to make them wait, or to fail to reward them for their efforts, or to let them get confused or lost or stuck

I was talking w/ @watermelynn-witch about this and she said "saying the purpose of a game is to be fun is like saying the purpose of a painting is to invoke joy"

I value fun really highly and I don't think fun is anti-art but. games can and should be allowed to be more things than just that
