I learned how to Scotch Darn over the past month! I watched a really intuitive video (that I unfortunately didn't save the link to) about how to do it and thought, "I have a bunch of socks that need darned and this looks easier than woven darns or God-forbidden Swiss Darning." And it definitely was easier. This will be my go-to for sock mending for a long time now.
Close-ups and a later mend I did on the Piranha socks below the cut.
Unless you really like the thick padding feel on the bottom of your feet (which I sometimes do if my feet are sore), I can't recommend using thick yarn like the rainbow yarn I used on the Super Mario Bros pair. I would recommend using a lighter weight thread than the original material or at most a similar weight cause this style of mending is THICC.

the sum of my accomplishments this month: a pile of mended handknit socks and a completed puzzle of Coast Salish artist Francis Horne Sr.'s work SASQUATCH.
you can find the puzzle here: https://nativenorthwest.ca/1000-piece-jigsaw-puzzle-sasquatch/
mending methods used: duplicate stitching over worn stitches, woven patch darning over holes.
supplies used: darning egg, tapestry needle, scrap fingering weight yarn in a variety of colours

Short post cause at somepoint I'm gonna do a post with just all the ones I've done.
Sock darning is so satisfying
Like I'm still not doing it the neatest but I don't really care, most people aren't gonna see them anyway, but I love patching my ace socks with green thread and my aro socks with purple thread.

Today's lunchtime accomplishment: Darned my first sock. I love wearing these worsted weight socks around the house so much that I made two in different colors. Unfortunately I wore holes in both pairs, but I'm not ready to give up on them!
The sock is # 9278 Beginner Socks by Diane Soucy. Yarn used for the sock was Lion Brand Wool-Ease worsted weight. The repairs were done with a random bit of acrylic I had.

Found a hole in the toe of one of my handknit socks today- pretty salty about it because I finished these socks less than six months ago, and they are literally my newest handknit socks. Madelinetosh Euro Sock yarn is failing me
Decided to spend the afternoon darning socks (the Madelinetosh pair plus another pair that I put aside last week - one of the first pairs I ever knit has developed holes after 3+ years). Been listening to Stephen King's The Shining on audiobook, since Peacock has been failing to let me watch figure skating
I absolutely love my little 14 prong Speedweve sock darning kit, I tried many other ways of fixing holes with the goal of blending in well with the knitting, but those always took too long to darn and didn't last as long. So I figured I'd go with "having few sock pairs waiting to be darned, but the darning doesn't blend in" over "darning blends in well, but never actually gets done because I hate the process of darning"
Honestly probably should have just thrown out the older pair of socks - first picture is the first sock sole fully darned (I had to weave 6 separate squares to cover all the holes and super-thin-and-worn-down sections), and second picture is the second sock (which I haven't darned quite yet, but shows a much less severe section of super worn-down yarn that isn't technically a hole yet, but will be at any moment if I don't reinforce it)
Also note how new the patched sections look compared to the 3+ year old worn sections - I'm honestly surprised I still even had the remaining yarn after knitting the socks years ago
Anyway, I'm less mad at the Madelinetosh socks now, as the toe holes are super small and easy fixes, and the rest of the sock sole is still in perfect shape. Here's me partially through the process of darning one of the holes on my Speedweve

This one might be a bit hard to see because of the colors, but it's plaid. First attempt at a plaid darn.

I'm still so delighted by the fact that I can just.... Make socks work again? With a few hours and some string??
(okay maybe more than a few hours I'm still pretty slow but you get the idea)
#variegated embroidery floss is 10/10 dont even have to worry about making a fun pattern#plus now i can tell my different pairs of socks that have the same pattern apart#AND i cant feel my shoes through my socks in a way that makes me want to die#visible mending#mending#darning

I wanted to make some kilt hose for the Highland Games but could only manage a single ho 😔
Guess I could hop.
#actually checked the weather and it’s going to be in the ninties so no wool socks for me#pretty pictures come after the socks are both done#wouldn’t have been able to wear them anyway though because I’ve just remembered my plaid skirt is in the darning hoop#knitblr#knit socks#knit kilt hose#kilt hose#Highland Schottische Kilt Hose#Nancy bush#I have very thick calves and ankles and the cuff is too tight. thinking I might rip it out and reknit it on 3 mms#i remember being 8 and my friend telling me how gross it was someone she knew had ‘kankles’. didn’t know what they were but thought it was#stupid to care what your ankles look like. promptly gave me a complex about them and I ended up having ‘kankles’ anyway#it is stupid to care what your ankles look like although it’s annoying not to fit knit sock patterns 😭

It's all fun and games knitting/crocheting/etc while you binge TV until you realize that the Vibes of whatever you're watching will be inextricably woven into the item you're making for the rest of time. Exhibit A, I now have a cozy autumnal lap blanket that feels like Succession.
#if you press your face close to the fibres you can feel all the love Logan Roy never gave his children#similarly i also have a darned sock that feels like Black Sails and a cosplay that's head-to-toe Interview With the Vampire#'Hey Charlie maybe if you tried watching happier shows this wouldn't be so much of a prob--' No <3#succession

Found a bunch of my old woolsocks at my parents, sadly all of them were eaten by moths. But i decided to darn them one after another this wintertime. That's the first (and the least damaged) repaired pair.
