OPPORTUNITY SPACES

Building off of the last series of posts, when doing research around social sustainability within the built environment, I noticed that vacant buildings and parcels can be considered opportunities, rather than liabilities. These Opportunity Spaces are essential to a community’s identity and social viability because they afford community members the opportunity to take back their neighborhood, especially through the physical environment: built, unbuilt, natural, and community specific. A potential role of the architect in this situation might be to help residents to envision what these spaces may become. The slight re-imagination of the ordinary may help unleash the latent potential of these Opportunity Spaces and inspire hope and vision within the community.

5th day film shooting

Creed

And that’s a wrap for today.

A day of rain, hail, clouds, sunshine and winds but that didn’t stop our production of the film! 

Today again on a Sunday, our crew began shooting the scenes of the soccer game/training.

A reminder of the film’s synopsis...

Main story revolves around a boy and soccer. He finds difficulties with fasting for ‘Ramadan’ and keeping his physical and mental health in check, when he is up against his team and his strict coach.

Artificial lights is set up. Like architecture, the ‘colour’ and ‘colour intensity’ gives a different mood against a room, surface and space. I’m presuming this type of light is - Cool White, LED 10000K 

Camera set up. The cameraman is working with a new technique of filming - the ‘slider.’ This type of shot is typical in cinematic films. And action... left from the white brick wall, following the main character, to him and his team... slide...

My team watching the take - director, actors (soccer players & main character). This is a change room of a football team we have adapted. It has an industrial + contemporary vibe (white textured render over brick, exposed ceiling beams, timber and rubber tiled floors).

Reflections:

- We have managed to finish the scenes planned in the ‘call schedule.’ Although we finished an hour and a half after the set time, everyone was happy and managed to keep warm (from playing soccer!)

- Working with the community provides many benefits: 

Travel & food expenses reimbursements

Utilise community amenities and buildings (like this one!)

Interact, engage and work with a range of people of different cultures, demographics etc.

Next shooting is a DOUBLE-WEEKEND. I will need to mentally prepare, plan and rest haha

Social Sustainability

Social sustainability is one of the more difficult facets of sustainability to address because it’s generally less measurable and less quantifiable than economic or environmental sustainability. It has been less well examined and is less consistently applied than other core sustainability concepts.

It’s also not especially well defined, but we’ll try and give you the general idea here. It encompasses a variety of things ranging from culture to politics. It revolves around being able to satisfy human needs and cater to the demands of society in a sustainable way. Quoting from the excellent video I’ve embedded below, 

in a sustainable society people are not subject to conditions that  systematically undermine their capacity to meet their needs

Possibly the most relatable explanation of social sustainability comes from Manfred Max-Neef. He identifies 9 human needs which are consistent across all human civilisations and eras.

Subsistence - health, food, shelter, etc.

Protection - safety and security

Affection - love, friendship, family, self-esteem

Understanding - curiosity, understanding, education

Participation - responsibilities, work, sharing

Idleness - free time and relaxation

Creation - imagination, skills, autonomy

Identity - sense of belonging, self-esteem, consistency

Freedom - autonomy, human equality, choosing to be different

Something which fulfils a need is a satisfier. For example, having a meal satisfies your need for subsistence. Something which covers multiple needs is called a synergistic satisfier, such as cooking a meal with your friends satisfies subsistence, affection, creation and identity.

There are also things called violators or destroyers, which are almost like false positives. They claim to satisfy a need but paradoxically prevent other needs from being satisfied. Censorship claims to provide protection, but, in fact, suppresses creation, identity, and freedom. Then, there are pseudo-satisfiers, which satisfy a need on the surface, but when you scratch the surface, aren’t as fulfilling as they seem, such as fashion trends which seem to satisfy identity, but that might not actually be the case.

It follows logically that wherever possible, we should pursue synergistic satisfiers. By satisfying more needs with the same input, we create more sustainable fulfilment - and that’s the key to social sustainability.
