Why "Prep" for Climate?
Or, alternative title: Have you heard of chess?
Nah, not to be a smart ass, but if you "play the tape" and think ahead a few possible steps, took, then pawn, then knight, then queen, you could for see a need to stock food for the climate crisis.
It's already happening
If you notice, so many farmers and even factory farms are pulling in smaller harvests due to drought a d other climate related challenges. The thing about how the weather patterns are changing is that the frequency of the changes is increasing and the level of intensity is also increasing. So, what does this mean? We should stick some of our favorite foods.

I love corn, for like three meals a week. Green beans and broccoli are my top three go-to's every single week. Oh but wait, check the news, corn farmers are currently struggling.

My Vision of a Social Enterprise:
Background and Rationale
Despite massive production of tahong (green mussels) and talaba (oysters) in the city of Bacoor, the fisherfolk whose responsibility is to propagate and harvest it barely make a living. The Tahong Republic, a social enterprise, is established to assist these fisherfolk to produce their green mussels and oysters in a scientific, environment-friendly system to increase their production and aid them to market and sell their goods at a reasonable price to help earn a just and liveable wage. The enterprise encourages the fisherfolk to participate, as the primary stakeholder, in developing new ideas to expand the scope of production such as tahong preserves, ornament making and producing crop fertilizer using the mussels and oysters’ shells to minimize production waste.
Description of Product and Service
The Tahong Republic aims to produce the best quality of fresh green mussels and oysters for local markets in Bacoor and nearby towns and cities in Cavite and, to a larger extent, the whole country. With the help of science-based procedures,in coordination with non-government scientific experts and the local government unit, the enterprise assures the consumers of healthy and safe consumption of nutrient-packed seashell products. Aside from fresh tahong and talaba, the enterprise also offers a wide variety of products from these seafoods. This includes tahong chips, garlic tahong gourmet and adobong tahong, kilawing talaba (raw oysters with spiced vinegar) made also by our fisherfolk. Shells from tahong are also used to manufacture home ornaments like figurines and christmas lanterns to name a few. Last but not the least, and also to help save the environment, the shells are also processed to produce crop fertilizers. These fertilizers are proven safer both for the crops and the consumers than conventional fertilizers which are made with dangerous chemicals that affect the consumers' health and the environment.
Benefits to Stakeholders
Neglected by society, despite offering their time and effort to produce quality seafood for our tables, our fisherfolk are underrepresented and underserved. It is time to give back the social value they deserve for their dedication and perseverance to the industry. The primary goal of the Tahong Republic is to create a sustainable income-generating enterprise to provide a liveable wage for our fisherfolk for them to support their families and to guide and lead the tahong and talaba industry to success. For the consumers who are affected by the rising commodity prices due to inflation, the enterprise guarantees them quality yet affordable products that they can enjoy while also giving back social value and helping our fisherfolk to make a living. The Tahong Republic is also driven by scientific discipline to promote sustainable and environment-friendly means of producing green mussels and oysters. To minimize the impact of producing these seafood on our environment and maintain the biodiversity in our sea, particularly Manila Bay, the enterprise uses organic materials to produce and propagate tahong and talaba such as bamboo and abaca ropes. With the method and materials aforementioned, we lessen the disturbance of our biodiversity in bodies of water so that other fisherfolk who depend on other seafood will also benefit.
Value Proposition
The Tahong Republic and, our primary partners, the fisherfolk envision to make social impact, great or small, to benefit every individual in our community. Our mission is to serve the people by providing quality and safe tahong and oysters for food and other products made from these gifts of nature, by protecting our environment through scientific research and practices and by adhering to the values and principles of social entrepreneurship to create a better world for all of us and to the generations to come.

How did Filipinos contribute to the concept of social
enterprise? Who were the forerunners of this type of
business with a positive social impact?
Between 1492 and 1504, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus led four Spanish transatlantic
maritime expeditions of discovery to the Americas. This led to the widespread knowledge of the
New World, but the real purpose of his voyage was to find the spice trade and go back to his
country with cargoes rich in silk and spices. For you to do this venture, you need to be funded by
the kings of Spain, which is one of the things Magellan also did when he set sail for a purpose,
the spice trade, and he successfully landed in the Philippines in 1521, but before he could set sail,
he had a hard time because his country, Portugal, did not support him. Instead, the country that
helped him was Spain, because of his successful expedition here that the business started because
it has been proven that the world is round and the spice island is said to be found in the
Moluccas.
Due to the desire of other countries to keep up with the extensive trade here, the Netherlands or
the Dutch entered and established the Dutch East India Company. The East India Company was
initially created in 1600 to serve as a trading body for English merchants, specifically to
participate in the East Indian spice trade, because back then to be able to participate you needed
to have the capital for your ship, but the Dutch East India Company thought of developing it
through private individuals. Through their money, they are full of what are called joint stock
companies, which were used by English merchants in the 17th century (which is the 1600s) to
pool capital and share the risks associated with trading voyages to Asia and Africa in our time
called Corporation.
During this time, the concept of feudalism existed where people lived with what they called
lords, and these people were made into slaves or soldiers who were given to kings so that the
king could grant rights to their lands. During the medieval era, it started with a military
hierarchy, and the ruler or lord offered mounted fighters a fief (medieval beneficium), a unit of
land to control in exchange for military service.
But when the black plague hit and a lot of people died, there was a labor market. People knew
how to demand how much they could work for their bosses and this is where the ideology of
feudalism ended in which capitalism entered. It began when steam engines were gradually used
in the 1700s and utilized in the mainstream in the 1900s. During the Industrial Revolution, steam
engines started to replace water and wind power and eventually became the dominant source of
power in the late 19th century.
Because of the practices of capitalism, many people have become rich and many have become
wealthy. This is where economic problems have commenced because countries are experiencing
many hurdles with wars and energy shortages, and if there are any, they are only held by large
companies. The government was not enough to help the people. That's why the social market
economy exists. It began around the late 18th century, after the Industrial Revolution, and
because of this concept, the cooperative concept was practiced in Germany. Due to the many
affected by the existence of capitalism, social welfare through trading started here. That is why
the Rochdale pioneers formed. They are put together by individuals who work together to buy
cheap products in bulk and make money.
This concept has helped a lot because there is what is called a patronage refund where when you
are a member of the cooperative and buy your product, you will earn there. As the income of the
cooperative grows, you will earn there because of the annual return or dividend that is called.
With the growth of the cooperative, it reached the Philippines because of our national hero, Jose
Rizal. When he studied in Germany, he learned it and formed it in the place where he was exiled,
where he established the first cooperative called La Sociedad de Los Abacaleros (Society of
Abaca Producers) in 1896. He built it with the help of his students.
The cooperative is an example of a social enterprise because its concept is to help the members.
Unlike corporations where only the shareholders get rich or make money, in a cooperative
everyone earns, this property is equal. So there is equal power in a decision on where to run the
company. That's why I believe that social entrepreneurship existed long before those who are
recognized, like Bill Drayton or Muhamad Yunus. However, they had the most impact, so maybe
they were recognized, but in history, it can be distinguished that the first to make an impact was
Rizal. If social activism only began in 1900 or 1950, and Rizal died in 1986, isn't it exciting that
there was a Filipino who promoted social entrepreneurship from the beginning, when the S.E.
was unknown and there wasn't much machinery, such as the influence of the media, academics,
and so on? Maybe we don't recognize it, but through this book maybe we will become aware not
only of ourselves but of all the people who in the Philippines are the pioneers of advocacy for the
country to get out of the slavers of foreign invaders without violently, and I will also add that as
you read this, you will be one of the tools to help our fellow human beings because they are
listening. I think everyone has his or her gift. Through this, we can contribute, even in a small
way.
