On This Day in New York City History February 11, 1897: The White Rose Mission (also known as the White Rose Home for Colored Working Girls and the White Rose Industrial Association) was established in New York City on 97th Street in what is now the Upper East Side.

The New York Public Library Archives and Manuscripts page describes it as follows:

"The White Rose Mission and Industrial Association was founded in 1897 in New York City by Victoria Earle Matthews (1861-1907), former slave, journalist, author, and social worker. The Mission was a Christian, non-sectarian social center for African-American women who had migrated to the North in search of employment."

Victoria Earle Matthews (May 27, 1861 - March 10, 1907) was the daughter of a slave and its believed her father was the master of the plantation. Her mother would escape to New York City and after the Civil War would return to Georgia to claim Victoria and her younger sister. Both girls would return to NYC with their mother.

Matthews would self educate herself  and eventually became a journalist working on such NYC newspapers as the New York Times, New York Herald and the New York Sunday Mercury. She would also write for such African American newspapers as the Boston Advocate and the New York Globe.

Matthews would found such organizations as the Woman's Loyal Union (1892) and the National Federation of Afro-American Women (1895). The establishment of the White Rose Mission in 1897 sought to help black girls and young single women migrating from the south to learn skills that would help them find employment and to provide adfoddable shelter.

Matthews also wrote such novels as Aunt Lindy: A Story Founded on Real Life (1893) and helped to put together the address delivered at the first Congress of Colored Women of the United States, at Boston, Mass., July 30th, 1895 entitled The Value of Race Literature. It called for the collecting of writing both by and about African Americans. She also lectured on "The Awakening of the Afro-American Woman" and edited “Black Speeches, Addresses, and Talks of Booker T. Washington." Matthews would die of Tuberculosis on March 10, 1907.

The White Rose Mission would move to a larger location in 1897 at 217 East 86th Street and eventually moving to 262 West 136th Street in Harlem in 1918 until its closure in 1984.

sarah cameron - a popular and highly successful model, dividing her time between the glamorous world of la and her home in the obx.

rafe cameron - the older brother of sarah cameron, known for being just that (the fan girls love him). i guess you could call him an influencer, but i doubt he’d be very fond of that label: he models from time to time.

y/n - topper’s cousin, up-and-coming social media influencer, recently moving to the obx after studying fashion at a college in nyc.

It was AP English, and you were supposed to be studying for a Macbeth assignment coming up. Supposed to. That was until Peter Parker, who could possibly be the only other person in school that was as bullied as you, decided to sit beside you and ‘hang out’. Your teacher was on pretty good terms with you, so he didn’t mind having two nerds coddled up in the back of class talking about the latest ‘nyc best seller book’. However, when Miguel noticed you both talking in the back, he realised quickly that you two weren’t talking about book clubs.

‘He’s such a jerk, right?’ Peter said, as you were a giggly mess. You put your hand on peter’s as you crouched to laugh even more. Miguel’s eyes darkened. ‘He is! W-when he’s like, ‘oh yeah I’m the coolest kid in school’, when in truth no one actually likes him!’ You replied, as you and Peter clung onto each other, both laughing messes.

Miguel clenched his jaw, realising you must be talking about him. god, he never felt more rage then he did right now.

The truth was, Miguel did bully you. He knew that. he did it on purpose. Just watching you cry, watching you move away from him in the halls so he didn’t heckle you, that arose something in Miguel that made him smirk whenever you squirmed. However, you didn’t know that most nights when he got a reaction out of you, he would lock himself in his room and pull his cock so hard he’s as much of a mess as you were. Hell, he’s even caught himself whimpering your name a few times. But he wouldn’t ever admit it to you. I mean, its ridiculous! Peter looks shocked. ‘I mean, you can’t be serio-‘ ‘been talking bad about me, Pete?’ A deep voice was heard. Your blood ran cold. You could see the fear on peter’s face. you both turned around, seeing Miguel towering above you both. You stood up immediately. ‘I- Miguel I don’t think peter meant it in a malicious way’ ‘I’ll deal with you in a second.’ Miguel snapped, as you looked down.

‘M-miguel I didn’t mean to-‘ Peter stammered, as Miguel scoffed. ‘You didn’t mean to? Oh yeah? So what, you weren’t just saying all that shit?’ He said, as Peter looked down. ‘I-i’m sorry.’ He stuttered, as Miguel clenched his fists. ‘You do anything like that again, I’ll get flash to fuck you up again. You hear me?’ He said threateningly, as he lifted his finger to tap on peter’s glasses. ‘Fixed your glasses huh? hm.. shame. Me and flash worked hard breaking them last semester.’ He mocked, as you looked away. The bell soon rang, and you and Peter quickly gathered your stuff to leave.

It was lunch, as you walked down the hall towards the cafeteria, you heard your ‘nickname’. ‘Hey, know it all!’ Miguel shouted out, as you turned around slowly. ‘Y-yes?’ You stuttered, as he grabbed your hand, pulling you into an empty classroom.

You squeaked, falling back into the wall, as Miguel locked the door beside you. ‘I-i didn’t m-mean to be mean last class Miguel i-i swear I-‘ ‘shut your mouth.’ He said, his voice deeper then usual. He turned around from you, as your face grew concerned. ‘A-are you okay?’ You asked. you hear him chuckle, turning towards you. ‘You’re supposed to be smart, but you can’t see what’s about to happen?’ He asked teasingly, moving closer to you. he stopped just as your noses touched, you could feel his hot breath on your lips.

‘..i-if this is some sick prank, it’s really mean.’ You whispered, refusing to look at Miguel in the eyes. He noticed that. ‘Look at me.’ He said, as you hesitantly look up at Miguel. ‘There she is.’ He teased, his finger lifting up your chin. ‘..y’know, I don’t actually think you’re ugly.’ He confessed, as your eyebrows rose.

Very confused. ‘Wh-what are you..?’ You tried saying, as Miguel leaned closer to your lips. ‘Let me kiss you.’ He whispered, as your eyes widened. ‘..you-you hate me.’ You said, looking up at Miguel. He smirked. ‘Who says that?’ He teased. He leaned closer to your er. ‘I’ve been infatuated about you for a while now. I never knew why, but when I saw you with damn Parker.. it’s made me realise. Made me know for sure now that I want you.’ He confesses, as you gasped. ‘you.. what?’ you uttered out, as he leaned back towards your lips. ‘Can I kiss you?’ He asks, as you took a moment to digest what he just said.

‘..yes.’ you muttered, as you watched Miguel’s eyes lighten up with something. Lust? Love? You’re not too sure. What you were sure about, however, was his lips on yours. It was a funny feeling, considering it was your first kiss.

His lips were warmer compared to yours, but they were soft. Too soft. As you both indulged in the kiss, his hands moved down towards your waist. You weren’t sure where to put your hands, so you just settled with his shoulders and hoped it was the right move.

He let go eventually, panting for air, as were you. He smirked. ‘You haven’t kissed anyone before, have you?’ He mocked. ‘Let me guess, you a virgin too?’ He spoke as you blushed, looking away. He moved his right hand to move your chin towards him. ‘Nothing to be ashamed of, sweetheart. Let me take care of that for you.’ He said, his voice sultry.

Hello everyone.

Some of you may have noticed I went completely inactive for many months. I did not check my messages or notifications, and I deleted pretty much all of my social media except for this one (though I'm not sure why I kept this, maybe because I put so much work into it and met many amazing people here.)

I guess I'll update you all about what's been going on. I've been accepted to my dream law school and will be attending in the fall. For work, I was fortunate enough to be flown out to NYC for a symposium on antisemitism. I have picked up several new projects that, once the research is published, will hopefully provide some helpful insight into the state of contemporary antisemitism. I am also helping to edit some books for a professor and scholar of Holocaust/Antisemitism studies. Taking this break has been incredibly beneficial not just for my productivity, but also for my mental health.

I realized I needed to re-formulate my relationship with Judaism, separately from antisemitism. I want to love being Jewish not out of a reaction to being hated, but because it adds meaning and value to my life. I'm happy to say that this approach has healed me in many ways. I also noticed that spending time on here made me significantly more bitter, angry, and depressed. I didn't feel that with this mindset I could add to productive conversations around Judaism and antisemitism.

I don't yet intend on returning, if ever. I just wanted to update you about why I went missing for so long. I shifted my advocacy to the real-world, and am happy to see my efforts being realized. It is much more productive than arguing online, and makes an authentic and observable difference.

If you have room in your prayers for one more name, please keep Gili Adar in your mind. She was my friend who was murdered at the Nova festival. She was only 24.

Dear Mayor Adams,

The entire point of masks — especially fitted respirators, i.e. N95s, which do not leave gaps around the face — is to protect the wearer from harmful airborne pathogens.

Let's break that down:

If : someone who is

A. visibly sick and carelessly spreading it everywhere (as many do), or

B. is unknowingly, asymptomatically shedding viral particles (also, as many do, because most people erroneously think it's over and generally take no precautions) was in that vehicle,

Then: there's a high likelihood they've left viral particles in the air.

It's really fucking simple:

AIRBORNE viral particles can LINGER IN THE AIR for hours.

That means the masked person getting into a vehicle — who doesn't want to / can't afford to get sick(er), even despite regular harassment and threats that Mayor Adams doesn't give a shit about — will not be safe to remove it inside.

Neither is it a good idea to try to enforce this based on mask type, force medical permits, etc. Others have written about this extensively. Unlike (effective) mandates, these bans are not based on science or data. E.g.:

First, addressing the claim that mask bans are necessary for facial recognition and societal safety, growing data shows that face masks are less effective than sunglasses in masking face identity. Another study claims “Convolutional Neural Networks are highly capable of learning features and accurately identifying the image, even when the only fully visible part of the face is the eyes.”

Those statements betray how out of touch this mayor is with the average person who actually walks NYC streets and takes public transit.

"This person" he refers to, as we all know, was not attacking random individuals. "This person" went after one specific man who had millions of dollars worth of blood on his hands:

"For people who do not have money or social connections at hospitals or the ability to spend weeks at a time on the phone, a denied health-insurance claim can instantly bend the trajectory of a life toward bankruptcy and misery and death."

Adams et. al., driving their private cars on sidewalks, don't care if regular, vulnerable people are endangered daily by everyone who chooses entitlement, selfishness, or just plain willful ignorance.

Even if they are already for / against an issue, it still makes a difference to tell them (source: they and volunteers for these offices say so themselves).

This was going to be the summer I will never forget. I had just turned 17, in late June, growing up in New York City, I was always by myself, I lived in an apartment complex with my father but he was rarely home due to his work. My father always told me to just go home after school and I had chores to do so I never really cared to make friends, I just focused on my studies and staying home, cooking, cleaning and reading. Summer came along pretty quickly...I didn't want to start my senior year with no friends. I told myself I would try to make friends this summer. I was honestly determined. It's kind of pathetic really.

It was a Friday morning, and I decided to go out for a walk around the neighborhood, I've lived here my whole life and not once have I just spun the block. I looked around and noticed a few guys at the local park, they were playing basketball and skateboarding around, doing cool tricks, I was pretty impressed by their tricks, I decided to go inside the park and sit on the bench to silently observe. I noticed a few girls that looked my age or slightly older, hanging around too and watching the guys. I began to doze off thinking how cool it would be to befriend them, but of course I am slightly (super) shy. My dozing off was abruptly disturbed by a basketball coming towards me. I get hit in the face and my nose starts to bleed...my freaking luck. "Fuck, shit! I'm so sorry, you good??" a boy's voice said to me, he has spunky red hair, he was actually pretty cute, I look up at him holding my nose and I just say "yea" he sees the blood and panics a little. "You are not okay, hold on , I gotchu right now." he tells me and takes his shirt off and gives it to me to use for my nose. Another guy comes up to us, he’s got raven black hair and glasses, he looks at the redhead with such a bruh face. “Ayato I had napkins..anyway are you okay? We can take you to the nearby urgent care” he insisted, he was super polite too. I didn’t want to come off as annoying but I did feel like passing out so I simply said yes. Both guys called over all their friends, it was 4 more guys and they escorted me to the urgent care. Skateboarding on the way there. They introduced themselves to me, and it turns out they were all close childhood friends and they have always lived in the neighborhood too, I swear I’ve never seen them before.

We arrive at the urgent care just to find it shut down completely. “Fuck shit man wtf” Ayato let out. “We really walked all the way here for that??” Shu commented. “Fuck it, let’s just take care of her at your place then” Subaru told Shu, all the guys agreed. “No no it’s fine don’t worry yourselves” I told them, honestly I was kind of scared to be at an apartment alone with guys, though they seemed really cool, it just felt weird. “Yea not a chance, we’re taking care of you I’m not about to get sued or charged with hurting a cute girl” Ayato stated, all the boys agreed and off we went.

Shu seemed pretty cool, he had his own apartment, his parents had moved and left him the apartment as long as he pays them monthly, he would have parties and girls over all the time apparently but he wouldn’t really be interested in engaging, he’s just the chill guy with the accessible crib to go to , he smoked a lot of weed too, they all seemed to smoke but he smoked the most. After they helped fix me up, we all hung out at Shu’s, we drank and smoked a lot of weed. I had never smoked or drank but I did lie to them, I didn't want them to think I'm a lame loner. I liked how I was feeling, I was socializing so much with all these guys, they were super chill.

"Yo the bitches from the park wanna come up here, is that cool Shu?" Laito had asked, Shu nodded which caused Laito to smirk and dap up Ayato and Kanato. A few moments later, the girls from the park came upstairs and it became a party, the girls seemed nice too. "Hey, how do you know these guys? Ya'll seem close." one of them asked me, "Oh I just met them but they're pretty cool guys." I tell her, her eyebrows rise up a little and she lets out a chuckle. "I think Shu and Ayato are pretty cute, I fucked Laito before though but everyone has, he's community dick, have you tried him yet?" She asked me so calmly, I felt myself becoming flustered. "uhh no, he's not really my type." I try to say coolly, I was literally a virgin. "Oh you're Reiji's type." she said kind of loud, Reiji overheard "Yea he likes them young too." Another girl said, "I like them new, unlike you." Reiji remarked with snark in his voice. The girls got offended but tried to laugh it off.

I got away from those girls and went to one of the rooms in the apartment, Shu was sleeping on the bed, I guess he was tired of socializing, not that I even saw him interact with anyone to be honest. "Hey, is it alright to be here?" I asked him, he opened up one of his eyes and nodded. Subaru entered the room as well.

“Bro why do you always let all these loud ass girls here?” Subaru sounded super annoyed.

“Whatever it’s not that deep, just chill in here, I got a joint calling our name” Shu said, smirking at Subaru and me. He lit it up, and we all began taking hits of the joint. It felt nice, I was super giggly and talkative to the point that Shu kissed me. It was so random, I mean he’s hot though so I think it’s fine, but then Subaru kissed me as well. One thing led to the next and they ran a train on me. Yea this is definitely not an ideal first time, I was high and everything felt nice so I’m not complaining. I doubt I am Reiji's type now, maybe Laito, Ayato and Kanato would still have sex with me..oh man why am I even thinking this way??

After we finish, I clean the fluids off of me in the bathroom. I stare at myself in the mirror, I look so fucked up, I have to go home. I come out and let them know I am leaving, Ayato and Laito offer to walk me home, but I politely decline. "Alright fine, see you tomorrow then right?" Ayato asked, I nodded my head and smiled. I got out of there, this is going to be a fun summer.

you spent the best part of two hours in the cramped economy section of the plane, armed with nothing but your ipad packed with downloaded disney+ shows. yet, barely resisting the urge of diving into them, you found yourself staring out the small circular window to your right, lost in thought. you couldn’t help imagine what was waiting for you at your destination, as the vast stretch of clouds and blue sky began to blur into the possibilities of your new life.

it wasn’t until the older man, located in the seat next to you, broke the silence that you were snapped out of your trance-like state. with a calm and reassuring demeanour, he struck up a conversation that quickly became the highlight of your flight.

he shared endless stories about his family back in outerbanks, and spoke of his work, which had brought him to new york in the first place. the hours melted away, before you knew it; the journey felt surprisingly short as your exchange grew more comfortable.

“well, anything you need,” he said, his expression warm as he leaned into you slightly, “you come to me, you hear? whatever it is, i got you.”

you were grateful for his unexpected kindness, causing you to smile. leaning into him, in a joking manner, you spoke, “how about you introduce me to that son of yours?”

“i’m sorry but… our pope’s off the market,” he winked, “but hey, he’s always around to be a friend.”

a friend; that’s exactly what you needed. aside from topper, you didn’t know anyone your age in outerbanks. but now, even before you’d reached the island, you already had the promise of one. it felt like a small victory, a glimmer of hope in the midst of all the unknowns awaiting you, but it meant the world to you.

“i’ll make sure he shows you around,” he continued, “gives you the full pogue tour!”

you grinned at the thought of being welcomed so warmly into this new world; your anticipation slowly outweighing your ever growing worries and fears.

Activists and foreign actors have infiltrated the city’s public schools with anti-Israel materials, fostering bias and hatred of Jews, according to a new report by a nonprofit think tank.

Teacher groups like NYC Educators for Palestine have collaborated with extremist organizations, some allegedly tied to hostile foreign governments and terrorist groups, to bring “radical, anti-American ideologies” into schools, said the Network Contagion Research Institute, or NCRI, and the advocacy group New York City Public School Alliance, which co-wrote the report.

“The report exposes how the Department of Education’s vetted resources enable radical sympathizers to shape young minds with biased information,” said Tova Plaut, a DOE pre-K coordinator and��co-founder with teacher Karen Feldman of NYCPS Alliance, a group of Jewish educators who contributed to the project.

Set for release this week, the report cites DOE documents, school events and staff social media posts as evidence of its findings.

It calls on the DOE to immediately conduct a curriculum review; enforce the chancellor’s anti-discrimination policies; adopt a definition of antisemitism and mandate training on it; and increase oversight of foreign funding.

“If these ideas are left unchecked, they will be internalized by a new generation of students, who will then  graduate, attend university, vote, enter the workforce, and raise families of their own, further embedding antisemitic beliefs into wider American society,” the NCRI and NYC Public Schools Alliance said.

Among the findings:

The DOE’s recommended resources for teachers include the Zinn Education Project, which provide lessons, workshops and articles highly critical of Israel and the US.

The DOE staff resource list links to the Zinn website, which features a section on “Teaching About Palestine-Israel and the Unfolding Genocide in Gaza” that claims, “Israel has turned Gaza into a ‘graveyard for children.”

Beacon High School in Midtown used Zinn lessons and articles, along with videos from Arab news network Al Jazeera, for a 10th-grade social studies class on the Israel-Palestine conflict, emails reviewed by The Post show.

The content “demonized Jews” while referring to Hamas as “a political party and militant group,” not as terrorists, parents said.

Other resources available for NYC teachers to use at “their discretion” include those from the Teach Palestine project, which gives materials that emphasize “Palestinian victimhood” and frame Zionism as a “colonialist” movement.

Teach Palestine is financially supported by the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), a California-based nonprofit with reported ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.

In May, the PTA of Ella Baker School, a public elementary on the Upper West Side, hosted a “Teach Palestine” webinar, sponsored by Rethinking Schools, the report said.

Materials covered topics such as “anti-Zionism is not automatically antisemitism,” and “Israel’s attacks on children, schools, and historical memory in Palestine.”

These potentially violate Chancellor’s Regulation A-830, according to the report. 

The report cites two groups, NYC Educators For Palestine, an arm of the UFT caucus MORE, and Teaching While Muslim, which hosted a virtual “curriculum share” for 80 teachers in February.

Your question touches on a complex and sensitive topic within the trans community, and it's important to approach this with an understanding that every individual's experience with gender identity and transition is unique, and there are various factors that can influence the challenges they face.

The concept of intersectionality is crucial here. People experience discrimination differently based on intersecting aspects of their identity like race, class, age, disability, and their socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, etc.

And even beyond that, each person's journey is shaped by a multitude of factors including their family dynamics, social environment, cultural context. These factors can make the experience of being trans vastly different for each individual.

You can't compare two people based on a single identity and say "ah this person must have had it worse because they are [X identity]!" because people aren't just one single identity, they're whole people.

Certain things can affect one part of the trans community more than another, like hypervisibility vs invisibility/erasure for example, or the rhetoric supporting laws that prevent trans people from competing on teams that match their identified gender. It's true that trans woman are often dehumanized and seen as either sexual predators, as sexual objects, or as a joke, and as a result are often the targets of a lot of transphobic rhetoric.

Minority stress is real, and it can affect people's physical and mental health even if they are not personally facing a current physical threat to their safety.

While trans people who were AMAB may be more affected by some of that stress, that doesn't mean it exclusively affects them-- often the whole community ends up feeling the effects.

Even if trans women are often targeted in bathroom bills, for example, the end result is no trans person can use the bathroom that aligns with their gender. And being discriminated against for being transgender and seeing others face discrimination for a shared identity can create distress and that should be acknowledged.

Comparing the struggles between segments of the trans community can inadvertently create a hierarchy of suffering, which is not constructive. It's more helpful to acknowledge that while experiences can be different, each individual's challenges are valid and deserving of support and understanding.

We get variations on this discourse pretty frequently and I used to answer this question when it was asked. But recently I started to wonder what good my answer will do-- If I tell you "x group is Most Oppressed tm" how does that change anyone's lives for the better?

If you're interested in this type of thing from an academic perspective then you can study the issue more, and make up all the "What if" scenarios you want. A trans woman who grows up in a supportive white liberal NYC family, starts puberty blockers at age 12, starts estrogen and legally changes her name and gender marker at age 15, has bottom surgery at 18 and goes off to college having been "passing" as female since childhood is going to have a vastly different experience than a Black transmasculine person who grew up in poverty in the South, doesn't have a supportive family, came out at 16 and was kicked out and then never finished high school, manages to start testosterone at 23 but isn't able to afford top surgery until they 34 and is often misgendered as a result of not being able to bind in their physical job. They will have completely different backgrounds, experiences, and privileges even if they both started to transition before middle age. And of course "passing privilege" is another can of worms that I'm not going to open here.

Instead of focusing on which group has it harder, it's beneficial to recognize that yes, there are some differences in our experiences, when viewed on average, but that should be used as motivation to help people who genuinely need it instead of just being divisive.

When you notice someone using transphobic arguments or targeting any trans people, you should obviously speak up and fight back on their behalf if you're comfortable-- we have to support each other, but we're all part of the same community and everyone's safety is important. Don't put yourself in danger.

So yeah, I'm tired of rehashing the Discourse and won't be answering questions about that type of topic. Good vibes only lol. In general, we all need to work to foster a sense of solidarity and support within the trans community and be open to listening to the experiences of all trans individuals. Understanding the diverse perspectives within the transgender community can lead to greater empathy and support, and mutual support can be a powerful tool in navigating the challenges of living in a transphobic culture.

the truth about art history is that this field is very, very narrow and exists to study (High) Italian Renaissance art through a classically informed tradition OR modern French art or very controversially up until a few decades ago, NYC ab ex and pomo art. if you want to specialize in any other niche like, Cambodian architecture or medieval textile you just arent ever going to apply the foundational methodologies and theories art history was designed for. I've read scholarship that compared Lesotho womens flower mural houses to the boogie woogie painting because that's how limited the field is.

A lot of kids freshly out of a bachelor's degree have this idea that we need to reform art history to make it diverse and to add value onto overlooked (bad) art and to validate every person who has no base understanding of art and can barely deeply analyze a painting. there's this obsession with art history as a recovery vehicle to give a voice to dead minorities. But that's just, not what this field is. They really want to be social public historians and anthropologists, but aren't willing to let go of our title.

In fact, I know so many museologists and archeologists/anthropologists and contemporary visual art critics, a theater major, a forensic science BS, and in one case a straight up comparartive literature PhD in American slavery all misusing the title of art historian with at most 2 years of art historical training because it's better than their real field. and they ALL have this bizarre obsession with curatorial for no reason, again they're so desperate for a title, so that they can sound like something smart.

It's so funny because we can smell a desperate poseur from a mile away and we're somehow accused of snootiness over it. If you don't know shit about vasaris impact on the field I'm not calling you an art historian. you didn't write a thesis exerting the fullest extent of your visual culture training and knowledge on examining a black square for 67 pages to kiss your advisors ass so you haven't earned the title.
