Pairing: mob!Jake x mob!fem!reader
TWN | 9k- brother’s best friend | best friend’s sister | posted this in my old account a really long time ago which is now deleted | this was literally my first ever enhypen fic and I still love it | I love the mob trope maybe I should write some more of it | so much fun, so much yearning, sibling hate and sibling love | Jay truly is a good brother no matter how shitty he is | Jake is fine shyt and he proves it to you by sneaking around with you
Summary: living in Jay’s shadow as his younger sister was always the life you had known. Considering that he was the heir to family business, the now leader of a mafia, Jay took all kinds of protective measures to keep you safe. Which meant that you were always by his side- just, a room away from his in hotels with your own body guards. You loathed your brother, you did. He stripped you away of a life. But then he loosened up when his right hand man and best friend, Jake, pulled some strings and somehow had you swooning for him.

For the longest time, all Y/N knew was to hide under the shadows of her brother. Wherever he went, she had no choice but to follow. She’d been to exotic countries but stayed locked in hotel rooms while her brother tended to business. Never did she get the chance to enjoy travelling, never did she find herself smiling while she stared out of a balcony, and never did she feel sociable.
Granted, she had bodyguards with her, Sunoo and Jungwon, suffocatingly accompanying her wherever she went. They were at her feet, tracking everything from a lift of her finger to a dart of her eyes to report back to their boss by the end of the day. For all she knew, she thought they were insufferable.
They were all insufferable, blindly following her brother’s orders in the hopes of getting a minuscule ounce of validation. She wondered how her brother managed to get them wrapped around his fingers, having them- all six of them- live for him and his needs and his desires.
Because at the end of the day, Jay Park was in charge, the strongest of them all, the one that could wipe off their existence with a snap of his fingers. Y/N never believed her brother could possibly hold that much power. Maybe power was just a figure of speech, maybe it was just fear that drove everyone to fall at his feet. Maybe it was because they had all signed their souls to him- a devil’s contract.
Her brother, the same boy that fed her popcorn when they were kids, couldn’t possibly be the cruel man he now showed himself to be.
Her brother, who once thought of her as the apple of his eye, only coldly glanced at her when she cried or complained. With a glass of whiskey in one hand, the other tracing his jawline, he’d tut at her. “Don’t be pathetic,” he’d sneer. “What would mum and dad say if they saw you like this?”
Y/N would ask herself the same question. If her mum and dad saw her locked away in random hotel rooms with two men watching her like hawks, they would be disappointed. If her mum and dad saw her cry to her brother about her loneliness, their hearts would ache.
Well, those were the answers concocted from fantasy.
In reality, her mum and dad would tell Jay to do whatever he could in his power to keep her safe. Her mum and dad would allow her to live the rest of her life miserably, as long as it meant she was still alive, breathing. Her mum and dad would applaud Jay for making the decisions he made.
She hated it, Y/N hated him with every fibre of her being- in the beginning, at least. It got exhausting, after a point. To hate her brother was to hate someone he was forced to become. To hate her brother was to hate the industry she saw herself taking over someday. To hate her brother was to mar the good memories she had with him.
Y/N accepted it just around the time she turned eighteen. She accepted spending half her life around expensive hotels and services. She accepted being an unknown sibling when she attended gatherings with her brother on one of those rare days. She accepted being helpless.
She was pathetic. Or maybe she wasn’t, her life was. She had overheard Heeseung and Niki talk pithily of her to Jay. She had watched Sunghoon give her half-hearted glances as he walked past her. She would let Sunoo and Jungwon- who were ordered to not converse with her- ignore her mundane requests. She would endure the helpless shrugs Jake passed her-
Jake. How she envied him sometimes. How she envied the way Jay treated him, his right-hand man, more like a sibling than he treated her. Y/N didn’t know what it was about Jake that her brother admired so much. What was it that he could do that she couldn’t? What was it that Jake had to offer that she couldn’t?
He was so loyal to him, Y/N noticed. Jake Sim would do anything to protect Jay Park. To be fair, she did hear them argue quite a lot. She wasn’t sure about what, but every time they argued, Jay would become a little angrier, a little more controlling and a little more on edge.
In the world she lived in, loyalty was the only thing keeping them alive. Keeping her alive. Y/N stayed loyal to Jay by not running away. The boys he strung alone stayed loyal to him by obeying him, not selling him out.
In the world she lived in, looking over her shoulder was her priority. Physically and metaphorically, of course. Everything had safety precautions, from the keychains on her purse to her beloved phone- the same phone that Jay controlled with through regulations.
He baned her from using social media. All she did with it was watch movies, listen to music or play games. Nevertheless, it was better than having nothing at all. It was better than enduring an eternity of boredom.
Because, Y/N was currently tucked away in boredom, locked in a room with her two trusted bodyguards. They were somewhere in Italy- her balcony gave her a splendid view of the city and with the moon shining in the corner of her sight, her room sparkled with silver.
While she shamelessly hummed a tune and looked out the balcony, Sunoo and Jungwon sat in the room on separate chairs. The pair stared at their phone, thumbs typing away yet somehow, half their attention was on Y/N.
Their one order was to take care of her, and she was sure they vowed to do a damn well job at it.
“Y/N,” she heard Jungwon step into the balcony, his phone fisted into his hand as he waited for a response. She simply hummed at him, telling him to continue. “Your brother wants to speak with you.”
A groan drawled from her throat, head tilting over her shoulder as she glanced at him. Jungwon, though he wasn’t innocent, he certainly did look like it. With his beady eyes and puffy cheeks- Jay must have gone to hell and back to have him and Sunoo on his side. Both of them didn’t look like they belonged. Perhaps that was their advantage.
“What does he want?” Her eyes tiredly narrowed as she spoke but ultimately received no answer.
She rolled her eyes, following Jungwon back into the room. She was being guided out by him and Sunoo, strolling behind her as she strutted out the door and down the hall until the door to her brother’s hotel room came to view.
Swinging the door open, she was immediately met with the sight of two tramps- one entertaining her brother while the other danced in the middle of the room.
Niki sat on one couch, holding up a phone to record the tramps while Heeseung sat beside him. Jake and Sunghoon sat on another, smirks of amusement plastered on their faces as they watched. Y/N scoffed when Jungwon left her side to sit with Jay and Sunoo left to sit beside Niki.
“Dismiss your prostitutes before asking for your sister next time,” she crossed her arms, heels clicking as she came closer to her brother.
With a tut and a snap of his fingers, the two girls disappeared into the bathroom. Niki groaned out a complaint, something about being bored, and tucked his phone away. He was the youngest, yet he was the strongest out of them all. Y/N had heard rumours about his talents in wielding knives.
Heeseung, who sat beside him, was the oldest and smartest. The one in charge of planning and executing- or so she heard. He had his arm wrapped around Niki’s shoulders, a stoic scowl taking over his face as he looked at Y/N.
“I know you hate me but try being nice to me when my friends are around,” Jay smirked, standing to meet his sister’s gaze.
“It’s exhausting to feel anything towards you, brother,” as Y/N rolled her eyes, Niki involuntarily snickered.
Jay flashed the boy a glare and he quickly covered his mouth. “As I said,” he looked back at his sister. “Play nice.”
Y/N hid her disbelief by sucking in a breath, digging her nails into her arms. “Why’d you want to see me?”
“Mum called,” he said so casually, it made her raise a brow.
“What am I to do with that piece of information?”
“Again with the attitude,” he warned, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “She wants us to attend a gathering tomorrow,” he informed.
“Tomorrow?” She asked.
“Yes, tomorrow,” he echoed. “And not to worry, mum already has a dress sent for you,” he offered her a teasing smile which earned him another roll of her eyes.
“Are you bringing all six of your playthings or is it just gonna be the two of us?” She waved her hand, pointing towards the rest of the boys, eyes still trained on her brother.
“Have some manners,” Jay scowled. “They haven’t done anything to you.”
“Doesn’t matter. They’re all loyal to you, aren’t they?” Y/N cocked her head. “I don’t feel like giving you lot manners,” she seethed.
“I’m not gonna repeat myself,” Jay seethed back, snapping his fingers at her face.
Y/N flinched. She shamelessly flinched, eyes blinking and body leaning back. But then she shook away the shock on her face, standing straight and offering him the same stoic expression she gave her when she was angry.
“Just answer my question.”
Jay rolled his eyes this time, hand retreating to his side. “It’s only going to be me, you and Jake,” he promised.
“Awe, am I not gonna have my lovely bodyguards there?” She pouted, clearly showing off her sarcasm.
“Jake is more than capable of taking care of you for one night,” Jay smiled teasingly, looking over her shoulder to steal a glance from his right-hand man. “The rest of them have business to attend to.”
“Of course,” she smiled right back at him, narrowing her eyes. “Is that all?”
“Yes, that is all,” Jay nodded. “I expect you to be ready by tomorrow evening.”
“The dress better look pretty, then.”
“Oh, don’t worry. It is,” Jay cooed. “Mum even got it in pink.”
Her scoff went unnoticed by everyone when they fell into a stupor of laughter. Y/N was used to it, to be openly made fun of. Maybe she didn’t care, either. Regardless, if something happened to Jay one day, it would be her they listened to. She knew how she could get her way.
“Sunoo and Jungwon can stay here for the night. Have some fun,” Jay announced.
“Yay, I get to spend the night alone,” she leaned her weight on one leg. “Generous of you,” she crooned.
“I know,” Jay crooned back, eyes trailing towards his right-hand man. “Be a gentleman, Jake, and bring my sister back to her room, will you?”
Jake stood up, rubbing his palms against his jeans and giving Jay an assuring nod. Y/N didn’t bother to meet Jake’s eyes or bid her brother a good night. She trailed towards the door, leaving as she felt Jake’s hand hovering over her back.
The halls were empty, ground matted with blue carpets, walls plastered with ivory wallpaper, all the glory made visible by dimly lit golden lights. Yet her senses drowned in the sounds of their feet padding against the carpet, his hand guiding her by her back.
Jay must have trusted him the most. If it were anyone else, he probably would have chopped their fingers off for even dreaming of touching her- his sister. For someone that acted like she deserved no happiness, he sure was overprotective.
“Jay only wants to keep you safe.”
Jake’s voice rang loud and clear, his accent giving away his nerves. Y/N scoffed again, rolling her head to the side to get a better look at his perfectly styled hair and sculptured nose.
“I thought none of you were allowed to talk to me?”
Then came silence, just as she expected. And Jake had let her into her hotel room, locking the door as he left, leaving her in silence. Lonely silence and she liked that she was alone. For once she wouldn’t have two bodyguards shielding her to sleep.
The next morning, she was happy to realise that Jay was wrong. The dress her mum sent was, in fact, black. The satin wrapped around her frame effortlessly and Y/N admired herself in the mirror, her hands brushing over her collarbones and neck that hung a thin chain. Her fingers adorned with rings, ones that Jay bought for her.
She was brave enough to wear stilettos, and her feet tapped against each other while she sat in the back of her car, staring out the window. Jake drove, Jay sat in the passenger’s seat. The rearview mirror angled directly at Y/N, giving Jay a clean picture of his sister.
“When’d you get your nails done?”
Y/N admired her nails, shiny black liquor matching her dress. “I did them myself,” she spoke with a smile.
Jay hummed, amused by the way his sister entertained herself. He didn’t say anything else, just tapped his phone against his cheek and looked out the window. Jake found himself glancing at her through the rearview mirror.
Soon Y/N found herself standing in front of another hotel. The party hall, she presumed, where the gathering would be held. That would be the third time she was attending a party that year, to be able to witness human interaction.
Jay made sure to keep his hand wrapped around her forearm, subtly dragging her around as Jake followed them into a room lit by chandeliers and organised with circular tables- covered by white cloth, of course.
“Alright, listen,” Jay held her at an arm’s length, eyes sternly begging her to listen to his requests. “I need you to stay in one place. Where I can keep an easy eye on you,” he blinked.
“Am I not allowed to have fun?” Y/N crooked a brow, a smile creeping up her cheeks. “Dance with the rest of the guests, maybe?”
“Jake will be with you at all times. I’m sure he can give you all the entertainment you need for the night,” he clenched his jaw. Jake let out a hum, his hands clasped behind his back.
“Then why do you need to keep an eye on me?”
“Because I’m paranoid, Y/N,” he said, rolling his eyes. “Just tell me where you’ll be sitting. At least I’m letting you pick.”
“Yeah, because that’s being charitable,” despite her annoyance, she looked around the room, eyes landing on the open bar with tall stools. She pointed in its direction. “There. You’ll be able to see me from any corner and I’ll at least be able to drink.”
“Fine,” he agreed. “Just don’t get drunk. I expect to see you be able to walk by the end of the night.”
Then he exchanged a promising nod with Jake, leaving the pair alone while he went away to act like a polite guest. Jake, after a moment of silence, offered Y/N his arm and she hesitantly looped in hers. He guided her to the bar and helped her sit on the stool.
She fixed her dress, one leg crossed on the other as she ordered champagne. “What would you like to have?” She turned to Jake, her earrings shining under the light.
“I can order for myself,” he said, weaving his fingers together as he sat beside her.
“Too proud to let a girl speak for you, huh?” Y/N chuckled, wrapping her fingers around the drink that was being handed to her.
“Funny,” Jake passed her an annoyed glance. He called for the bartender with a wave of two fingers, asking for a whiskey that was handed to him within seconds.
“Strong men only enjoy strong drinks, I guess,” she mumbled, smirking as she brought the rim of her glass to her lips.
Jake scoffed. “You’re full of opinions, aren’t you?” He narrowed his eyes. “You don’t know how to be nice to people?”
“What?” Y/N scoffed right back at him. “I’ve been stripped away of living my life and now I can’t have emotions and opinions?”
Jake looked away, clenching his jaw and gripping his glass of whiskey. He wore his own set of rings, ones that strained against his skin and clanked against his glass.
“And please enlighten me as to why I have to be nice,” she continued. “Have any of you been nice to me? Hence, do I owe any of you my kindness?”
“Fair enough,” Jake let the words push past his teeth.
“That’s what I thought,” her lips frowned into a scowl as she sipped her champagne again. Upon looking at his defeated face, though, she recoiled. “But since my brother’s forcing you to keep me company tonight, perhaps I should play nice.”
Jake chuckled, involuntarily letting himself enjoy Y/N’s humour. “Here I thought you didn’t owe me your kindness,” he cocked his head, hiding his smile with his glass of whiskey.
“Don’t make me regret it,” she tipped her glass towards him.
Jake hummed, nodding as he mustered up the courage to look at Y/N- his boss’ sister, the same girl he wasn’t allowed to cross paths with until the previous night. He smiled at her, pondering if striking up a conversation was a good idea.
If he was allowed to, he might as well let himself use his freedom to his advantage. Y/N was doing it, too, after all.
“Your life’s always been this way, huh?” He asked, shamelessly showing his curiosity.
“What way?” She wondered, pushing her newly emptied glass away. Her fingers curled under his chin, propping her elbows on the counter.
“This,” he pointed his finger at her, looking her up and down. “Controlled by your brother, denied of freedom,” he listed.
Y/N pondered over his question while asking for a refill of champagne. She swirled her glass around, watching the bubbles fizz away. She cleared her throat, nostalgia filling her conscience.
“I used to be a wild girl while I was still in high school,” she chuckled. “You know, typical high school parties, cheap beer and making mistakes?”
Jake nodded. “Then what drove Jay to treat you like this?” He cringed. “He pulled you out of school, didn’t he?”
“You know, I thought he would have told you of all people the reason for his actions,” she chuckled but continued explaining. “Yes, he pulled me out of school. He forced me to live in secrecy and whatnot,” she shrugged.
“We’re all just as clueless are you are,” he shrugged back. “All we know is that you and your brother have an… Unconventional relationship.”
“Unconventional doesn’t even begin to explain it,” she sipped her champagne. “He was forced into all of this, you know? The Mob, the violent mentality. With that came paranoia and the constant need to keep up his guard.”
“You seem quite sympathetic towards him,” he noticed.
“Maybe I am,” she agreed. “But whatever he’s been through doesn’t excuse how he treats me,” she insisted, pressing her finger to her chest.
“Right,” Jake pursed his lips.
“His overprotective act just made me despise him a little. He ruined my life, after all,” Y/N rolled her eyes.
“Of course,” he let out a scoff, a slight grin taking over his features as he finished off his whiskey.
Y/N tilted her head, attempting to get a better glance at Jake. “What’s so funny?” She asked, the same grin spreading on her lips.
The more she examined him, the more she realised how little she knew of him. Of any of them, for that matter. They lived under the same roof, travelled everywhere but the only information she gathered of them was by overhearing conversations. To be fair, her brother did ban them from interacting with her, regardless of how much he trusted them.
She came to realise that this was probably the closest she had to a conversation in a long time.
Jake, on the other hand, shook away the glee on his face when he looked over Y/N’s shoulder, only to find Jay approaching them. He looked away, clenching his jaw and weaving his fingers together. Y/N’s brows knitted together, confusion slapping her harder than a wave.
When Jay finally made himself known, her expression contorted into realisation. Brow raising, she watched him smile at her and Jake. “I see you’ve been enjoying yourselves so far,” he said. “I hate to interrupt but I have a certain someone that was begging to meet you.”
Beside him stood a woman that Y/N found much too familiar. Her auburn hair flowed past her shoulders, almond eyes shining with a smile as she looked at her.
“Pearl?” Y/N’s eyes widened, excited as she started the woman up and down. She used to babysit her and her brother when she was still children, oblivious to the bad in the world.
Pearl was a reminder of her past, a sliver of naivety.
“Yeah, It’s me,” the woman fondly opened her arms and Y/N found herself leaping at the hug.
“My God, it’s been years,” Y/N gasped, holding her at an arm’s length.
“I know, a lot has changed,” Pearl enthused. “You look great, Y/N.”
“You too,” she agreed. “How have you been?”
“Good. Great,” Pearl nodded. “I’ve got two kids, a great husband,” she smiled at her, then craned her neck to smile at Jay.
Jake watched the scene unravel from behind with a refill of whiskey held between his fingers. He saw the way Jay licked his top teeth as Pearl smiled feverishly at him and that Y/N wasn’t oblivious to the looks they shared. Unloyal she was, it was obvious.
Jay was quick to cut the reunion, standing between his sister and their once babysitter. “Nostalgia is a joy, isn’t it?” He grinned. “Now, Pearl. I’ll have a few words with my sister and then come find you. Go on now.”
Pearl nodded, waving Y/N goodbye. “I’ll be waiting,” she said to Jay and breezed past them.
Y/N gaped at her brother, wide-eyed as she realised what she just witnessed. Jay raised a brow. “What?” He asked, holding his hands by his side.
“She’s married,” she reminded him. “She has two kids. And you want to sleep with her?”
“Since when did you have a say in my actions?” Jay jeered, completely careless towards her point. Y/N rolled her eyes, Jake scoffed and shook his head.
“Unbelievable,” she cursed. “You’re unbelievable.”
“I know,” her brother smirked, then strolled past her, leaving her alone with Jake again.
Y/N scoffed at him, returning to her stool while shaking her head out of disbelief. She didn’t say anything, just thought to herself that this was probably the most eventful night she’s had since her eighteenth birthday.
“He disappoints you, doesn’t he?” Jake swirled around his whiskey, training his eyes on the way her mouth gaped.
“He has no self-respect, does he?” Y/N ran her fingers through her scalp, meddling with her hair as she hollered for more drinks- this time, wine.
“No, I guess not,” he mumbled, too entranced by the anger that seemed to suit her so well. The way her brows furrowed and eyes narrowed, mouth parted and chest rising a little more than usual- Jake looked away.
For the rest of the night, he stripped her and himself of any interaction between them. The pair enjoyed their drinks, lost in their phones. A part of Jake hoped that she’d ask him for a dance or whine about how bored she was.
Maybe she was too proud to ask for anything else, maybe she was just angry towards her intolerable brother.
It was proven to be the latter when Jay came striding back, hair tousled and shirt wrinkled from his controversial expedition. “You’re insufferable,” she said to him
“Don’t ruin my mood,” he dismissed her, and it was back to being ignored by her brother.
She was taken back to the hotel, her diner waiting in her room along with Sunoo and Jungwon. She quietly changed her clothes, freshened up before eating and replayed the events of the night over and over again.
She thought about Pearl and Jay and Jake- Oh, especially Jake and the conversation she had with him. She found herself craving more conversations, desperate for an escape. But, wishing for leisure was like wishing for a unicorn.
She got over it by tomorrow, accepting her loneliness once again while she ate pancakes in bed while her brother and his friends were enjoying breakfast together. She swore she could hear laughter echoing from the banquet hall, overpowering the melodies she had playing on her phone.
A knock on her door, however, was not what she expected. She didn’t have to get out of bed and open the door, though that was the whole point of knocking. It opened on its own and Jake’s head peaked through the crack, his hand gripping the doorknob.
Y/N immediately sat straight, duvet pooling at her waist as she turned off her music and put away her pancakes. A breath left her lips as he entered her room, followed by her brother and Sunghoon.
“What a surprise,” she mumbled, fisting the duvet as the three boys stood around her bed, one on each side.
“Good morning,” her brother offered her a curt smile and she nodded at him.
“Am I in trouble?” She almost laughed. “Or do you need something?”
“I just need to talk to you,” Jay rolled his eyes. “Andrei has been asking to see you for a while.”
“And who’s Andrei?”
Jay smiled viciously, realising that his sister was curious, giving him the attention he expected. “He’s a work buddy of mine, it’s not important.”
“Seems like it is,” she furrowed her brows. “He wants to see me, after all,” she argued.
“Just listen, will you?” He scoffed. “I’m attending a meeting of his and he wants you there.”
“Then why are these two here?”
“They will be taking care of you. I’d much rather have these two look after you while the rest of the boys attend the meeting with me.”
Jake pursed his lips, nodding as he listened. Sunghoon passed Y/N a stoic glance from the corner of his eyes. She gulped, covering up her second guesses with a furrow of her brows.
“So, what? I’m just gonna sit outside while you have all the fun?” She chuckled half-heartedly, a hesitant smile gracing her face.
“I don’t call this fun, Y/N” Jay seethed. “You’ve been popular around my colleagues and I’d rather not know the reason. The least you can do is not ask questions and follow simple orders.”
“I am not one of your playthings to follow orders, Jay,” she seethed back. “It’s early in the morning, I don’t need you snapping at me.”
Jay, with a smile that screamed anything but good, crouched beside her bed, face inching towards hers. “I can say the same,” he chuckled, two puffs of air escaping his lungs.
Y/N glared at him, jaw clenching as she let go of her duvet and crossed her arms. “You’re insatiable,” she growled.
“I know,” Jay smirked. “Now get out of bed, get ready and change into something presentable,” he stood to his feet, stomping towards her suitcases and flinging them open. Y/N followed him, jumping out of her bed and yelping.
“I’m obviously not going to show up in my pyjamas!” She yelled. “Now, stop going through my stuff and get out!”
She swore she heard Jake and Sunghoon stifle their laughter as Y/N pushed her brother towards her door. Their hands covered their mouths, unsubtly looking away.
“Out!” She continued yelling. “The lot of you!”
“I’m only messing with you,” her brother grinned at her as he stepped out the door, ushering the two other boys with his hand.
“You show brotherly affection at the worse times,” she clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth, Jake and Sunghoon strolling past her and out the door.
Jay shook his head, crooning. “Be ready before I get annoyed.”
Y/N slammed the door in his face.
Sighing, she brushed her hands down her face as silence consumed her once again. She strolled around her room, taking ten minutes to waste before ultimately disappearing into the bathroom.
It was rather dramatic of her to saunter out of her door in a little red dress, hands shifting her hair to one side of her shoulder. The carpet muffled the click of her heels and at the end of the hall stood Jake like a knight in tailored clothes.
His presence took her by surprise and her lips parted as she approached him. “Jay told me to get you,” he said and she curtly nodded.
Jake walked her downstairs, an awkward silence following their path as Y/N looked ahead; he fought to steal glances of her. Then they entered the elevator, metal doors sliding behind them.
He cleared his throat, licking his lips. “Had a good breakfast?”
“Of course,” she answered nonchalantly, eyes trained forward. It was a lie, obviously, but neither of them felt the need to acknowledge it.
She was piled into a car with him, Jay and Sunghoon. She didn’t say a word, didn’t seem like she wanted to either. Her earphones stuck to her ear, feet bobbing up and down to an unknown beat.
Jake, despite fighting his urges, had his eyes trained on her arms, legs, exposed neck and collarbones- any exposed skin he could get his gaze on, gaping from the corner of his eyes. He’d surely get in trouble if Jay caught his subtle glances.
An exhausted sigh left her lips when they reached her destination, her shoulders slumping as she stood in front of a rather tall building. “Come on, now,” Jay had clasped his hand around her arm and dragged her inside- Jake and Sunghoon followed.
“I can walk on my own,” she complained, a breathy whine escaping her throat as they entered a meeting room. Empty, it was- a long table surrounded by cushioned chairs for privileged backs to lean on.
“I know, I just don’t want my baby sister to get lost in this mess,” he taunted. “So, listen carefully and just follow the rules, yeah?”
“You make this sound like mission impossible,” she groaned. “Why are you making this such a big deal? I’m just meeting one of your colleagues,” she argued, tilting her head to the side.
“You’re meeting a colleague that’s killed people for fun,” he glared. “As surprising as it may seem, I’d like to keep you alive.”
“You’ve killed people too. What’s the difference?” She almost chuckled, disbelief taking over her features.
Jay had the same reaction. “The difference is that I’m your brother,” he reminded. “Now, can you just listen?”
“Fine. I’m listening.”
“Good,” he started. “When Andrei comes in, he’s gonna want to see you. obviously. All you have to do is behave, smile like the little princess you are and minimally answer all his questions. Simple enough, right?” He shrugged his shoulders, a sarcastic smile appearing on his face.
“Right,” Y/N rolled her eyes.
“Exactly,” he enthused. “When he’s done talking to you, Jake will take you away and you’ll wait in the bar, right across from this room,” he pointed his arm out the door, towards the area he was referring to. “Sunghoon will join you later.”
“Great plan, brother,” it was clearly a sardonic compliment. “Keeping me alive and all… You deserve an award.”
“I’m not in the mood for jokes, Y/N,” he sighed and she furrowed her brows, telling him that she wasn’t joking either.
Her reaction went ignored when the door to the meeting room flung open, revealing a man taller than the three boys Y/N was surrounded by. She presumed it was Andrei and he did fit the mental image she created for him. Tall, as old as her dad and holding pride as he walked in.
All three boys curtly turned their heads towards him, bodies stiffening as they greeted him with their hands meeting in the middle. “It’s good to see you boys,” he smiled.
“It’s good to see you too, boss,” Jay exhaled, letting go of his hand. Y/N lightly gaped at her brother, confused by his choice of… Words.
Andrew crisply turned around, surprised when his gaze was met with the presence of Y/N. He bellowed out a chuckle, brows raising as his arms extending past him. “My, God!” He cheered. “I didn’t actually think you’d bring her,” he directed towards Jay.
“I thought it’d be nice if you took a trip down memory lane,” Jay offered, shrugging.
“It’s been years since I’ve seen you!” Then he wrapped his arms around her, bringing her into a hug.
Y/N was taken by surprise as her cheek pressed into the man’s chest. She didn’t know what he was talking about, she didn’t know what either of them were talking about and Andrei sure as hell didn’t seem like he was the murderous type. Towards her, at least. So the confusion stayed on her face when she was released from the embrace.
“Do you remember me, sweetheart?” Andrei asked.
Y/N shook her head, almost embarrassed. “I’m sorry,” she chuckled.
“Oh, I don’t blame you,” he waved it off. “You were a baby the last time I saw you, clinging to your father’s side,” he smiled warmly, a stark contrast to the description she received of him.
“I’m sure she’ll remember if our dad gives her a little push towards remembering,” Jay smiled sarcastically again. Andrei agreed with a laugh.
“Regardless,” Andrei started. “It’s good to see you, Y/N.”
“Goodie,” Jay clasped his hands together, ushering at Jake with a nod. “I’d rather have my sister out of here before the rest arrive. Wouldn’t want her to die of boredom,” he took two steps towards his sister, a hand pressing on her back as Jake stood on her other side.
Andrei raised a questioning brow, turning to Sunghoon who answered with an inattentive shrug.
“I have so many questions,” Y/N whispered to Jay.
“I’ll answer them later,” Jay added. “If I feel like it.”
Then, Jake was guiding her away to the bar. It was like the previous night all over again as he helped her sit on one of the chairs, keeping the meeting room out of her sight. Y/N dryly laughed, scratching the corner of her brow with her pinky.
“He calls this entertainment,” the span of her palms spread across her thighs.
“He’s just being protective,” Jake debated.
Y/N shook her head again, chuckling out of disbelief. She ordered a glass of wine- a whiskey for Jake with it. The thought of being granted recreation was completely thrown out the window as her eyes met with Jake’s.
She scoffed. “You’d think that the right-hand man has to sit through every meeting,” she commented.
“There’s a lot more to my job than attending meetings and tending to your brother’s requests,” he chuckled. “Besides, my presence isn’t required. We already know what the meeting’s about.”
“Wow,” Y/N leaned her head on her shoulder. “There’s a lot about my brother I’m unaware of,” she stated. With that, it sounded like she affirmed it.
“I’m sure he’ll give you your answers when he thinks your ready.”
“I’m eighteen and he’s been dragging me along for three years. I think I’m ready,” she sipped her wine, eyes narrowed at the sight of Jake sighing. Her shoulders slumped again. “You know,” she trailed. “Jay treats you more like a sibling than me.”
Jake’s eyes widened, almost coughed up his whiskey as he gawked at her. Her statement came out nonchalantly, almost like she’d been waiting to finally say it.
At his reaction, Y/N laughed, waving her hand in front of her as she put away her wine. “No, no,” he coaxed. “Don’t freak out, I’m just saying,” she grinned.
He wiped the corner of his mouth with the side of his hand. “You don’t just say things like that,” he scoffed.
“Eh,” she shrugged a shoulder. “Am I wrong?”
“You are,” he insisted.
“You could be wrong, too,” she reasoned. “But then again, he wouldn’t be treating the lot of you like playthings if he actually cared,” Y/N raised her brows, hiding her expression by drinking her wine.
“Playthings,” he echoed. “You throw that phrase around a lot- what do you even mean by it?” He weaved his fingers together, perfectly styled hair falling over his left eye, curiosity taking over his duty.
“Well,” Y/N pondered, swirling around her wine glass. “You let him boss you around, use you, made sure that your sole purpose was to serve him-”
“Alright, I’m gonna stop you right there,” he silenced her with a wave of her hand and she couldn’t help but realise how similar he was to her brother. She exhaled, giving up. “You sound really stupid.”
“Is that so?” She hummed. “Please enlighten me,” she squinted her eyes, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth.
“He doesn’t use us or boss us around,” he waved around his fingers, body language suddenly animated. “You think he’s some sort of monster and I don’t blame you for it but he cares, Y/N. He just shows it in a messed up way,” he crossed one leg over the other, finishing his whiskey in one gulp.
“I feel very cared for,” she rolled her eyes.
Y/N wasn’t going to admit the pit she felt in her chest, a rock of disgust and jealousy churning her stomach, making her abandon her wine. It stung to know that he treated his friends better than he treated his own sister.
“Protect me, my ass,” she mumbled, rolling her head and looking past Jake’s shoulder.
Heeseung, Niki, Jungwon and Sunoo walked down the hall, leading a small crowd into the meeting room. Her fingers drummed against the counter, lips pursing as she pondered.
“Listen,” she heard Jake sigh. “I know it stings but he cares for you. More than any of us. Hence the overprotective act he puts on,” he coaxed.
“Act?” She huffed. “Was that supposed to make me feel better?”
“I mean, did it work?” He tried, clearly getting a laugh out of her.
“No.”
“Fair,” he pursed his lips. “Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?”
“We don’t even know each other,” she said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, pointing between themselves.
“So?” He asked. “We can get to know each other now?” He offered.
“Is that allowed?”
Jake smirked, tracing his tongue over his teeth. “I’ll let you in on a secret,” he whispered, leaning closer to her for dramatic effect. “Your brother trusts me more than anyone, which means he trusts me around you more than Jungwon or Sunoo.”
Y/N raised a brow, smirking back. “Which means what?”
“He doesn’t mind me interacting with you,” he let out. “I’ve always been looking out for you. Longer than Sunoo and Jungwon.”
She gaped at his confession, a shiver of shock running down her spine. “How am I only finding out about this now?” She inquired.
He shrugged. “I told you. There’s a lot more to being the right-hand man than you think,” he grinned. “Plus, he knows you’re going crazy. That’s why he needs me to tag along with him if he’s bringing you,” he explained.
“And here I thought my day was ruined,” she enthused, finding it in her to finish her abandoned wine. “So Jungwon and Sunoo aren’t my bodyguards anymore?”
“I guess you could say that,” he said. “They’re not gonna be locked in your room with you all day. They have other work to tend to for now is all I know. And I’ll be looking after you when you need to be.”
With the new information that was practically being fed to her, Y/N felt a rush of relief wash over her. “I can be alone in my room now,” she gushed.
“Yeah,” Jake chuckled, nodding.
She was still being babied, she knew. But the little splinter of freedom she was being given gave her a little hope. Maybe this was just the beginning of a better future, maybe Jay was realising how unfair he had always been. Regardless, she still felt happy and confident.
Hopefully, nothing would burst that bubble.
“And, by the way,” he added. “You didn’t hear any of this from me.”
“Of course,” she grinned and Jake found his hand moving towards hers, cupping it right on top of her knuckles. Y/N didn’t oppose it, she let his contact be the big red bow to her good day.
Jake thought her skin was warm. He thought the sight of their hands touching was more than just a pretty picture. He thought he wanted to hold her hand for longer than he’d like. He spent more than a couple of years watching over her like a fairy godmother- or guardian angel, whatever it was they called them these days. This was probably the last thing he expected, but it happened.
He wished for the moment to last a little longer, but Y/N’s face contorted into realisation, her gaze moving past his shoulder. She slipped her hand away from his, clearing her throat and dusting her dress as Sunghoon stood in front of them, the same stoic expression gracing his expression.
“The meeting’s almost over. Jay should be out soon,” he informed and Y/N nodded, pulling her lips to the side.
Before Sunghoon could make himself comfortable on one of the stools and enjoy himself a drink, Jay was striding towards them. With his hands balled into fists, his arms swung as he approached them.
Y/N found it in herself to smile at her brother, head innocently tilting as he looked at her with confusion. “What?” He asked. “What’s so amusing? Why are you smiling?” He wondered, looking between her and Jake.
“Am I not allowed to smile?” She blinked innocently.
“You don’t smile for no reason,” he pointed out, then rolled his eyes. “Where’s the angry remark I usually get?”
Jake and Sunghoon exchanged glances.
“Don’t be a bore, Jay,” Y/N chuckled. “I’m just excited to ask you those questions I was talking about earlier.”
Jay sucked in a breath, face relaxing as realisation washed over him. He glanced at the ceiling, then at the ground, helplessly sighing. He only realised just how much his sister was going to pester him.
“Let’s just go, shall we?” He pursed his lips.
Jay grabbed her forearm, smoothly dragging her out of her stool and past the hallway, all the way down to the ground floor. Y/N let him, yet curious questions tumbled out of her mouth, none stop. By the time they reached the car, Jay was annoyed.
He ushered Jake and Sunghoon to get in the car as he held Y/N by the arm, glaring at her until she shut up and gave him a reaction deemed serious enough. “What do you want from me?” He fumed.
Y/N took a deep breath, throwing away the questions she had on Andrei, or her parents or about the business he leads. Instead, she pursed her lips into a smile. “I just want you to be my brother,” she freely admitted.
“I am your brother.”
“But you don’t act like one!” She argued. “I just want you to let me live my life and be happy when I find happiness. I want you to let me explore the places you drag me to, let me interact with people,” she listed breathlessly, hope filling her voice.
“Y/N, you know how dangerous it is to just let you wander,” he sighed. “I’m not willing to take that risk.”
Her tongue poked her cheek as her brother looked away, eyes frantically blinking as a wind blew past them. “Okay, then Jake can follow me around while I go wandering,” she offered. “You trust him, and he keeps me safe. I’ll be a good girl and won’t talk to strangers.”
Jay immediately let out a chuckle. “What did you and Jake talk about while I was gone?”
Her brows furrowed, lips forced into a frown. “What? We didn’t talk,” she insisted. “it was more of a chat. And he didn’t exactly tell me anything.”
With that, Jay pondered, hands resting on his hips as he looked his sister up and down. He sighed defeatedly. “Fine,” he said. “I’m not going to let you wander all by yourself. You can stay in your room alone and do whatever you want but when you’re outside, you’re either with me or him. Understood?”
Y/N couldn’t help the smile that reached her eyes, stretching her cheeks and showing her teeth. She’d jump up and down if she could. “Understood,” she said to him.
“Good,” he nodded. “I trust him enough to know that he’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe. So, make friends with him or something, I don’t know. I’m only letting you do this because I don’t want you going crazy.”
“I know,” she nodded, lovingly looking at her brother who had his guard down. “Thank you, brother.”
“Don’t make me regret this,” he warned and she was being piled into the car, sitting in the back seat with Jake.
As Sunghoon started driving, Jake managed to catch Y/N’s attention. He curiously nodded at her, silently asking what she was smiling about. She only shrugged at him and looked away, hands resting on the exposed skin of her knee.
She was alone when she reached her, a silence she accompanied on her own. She starting squealing out of joy, skipping towards the bathroom with a smile that refused to leave her face. Music blasted through her phone and she shamelessly sang along.
Dinner was sent to her room later in the night and she happily located herself on the bed, duvet pooling at her waist as the TV played a random movie she’d never watched or understood. Nevertheless, she watched intently, wide eyes scanning across the subtitles as she stuffed her mouth with carbonara pasta.
She didn’t cross paths with her brother since their merry little conversation. And neither did she expect to see him or any of his friends. But her door creaked open, and a familiar set of fingers adorned with a familiar set of rings held the door frame and Y/N was wiping her mouth and placing her plate on a table.
Deja vu washed over her.
“Jake?” She raised a brow as he entered the room without an invitation, slowly and softly clicking the door closed behind him.
Jake gazed at her with doe-eyes, filled with some amount of hope and desperation. His lips crooned into a sheepish smile as his fingers laced together in front of him. “When I said I wanted us to get to know each other, I meant it.”
Y/N smiled involuntarily, blinking twice as Jake took two steps towards her bed. She had to admit, the conversation she had with him was forgotten about, overshadowed by the satisfaction of her new predicament.
For starters, she didn’t know if Jake alone was allowed in there. She didn’t know how her brother would react if he found out he was in her room. Bending and breaking the rules so early into freedom wasn’t the best idea.
But what the hell did she know? She let him walk right up to her.
“I don’t know why but something in me thought it’d be a good idea to sneak into your room,” he chuckled, pulling a chair towards the foot of her bed. He sat comfortably, eyes trained on the sight of Y/N pulling the duvet to her shoulders.
“He knows you won’t hurt me,” she waved it off. “He made it quite clear that he trusts you with his life. Ergo, he trusts you enough to keep my life in the palm of your hands. You chatting with me alone in my room shouldn’t bother him-”
“-But Jay’s ego is so big that if he finds me here, he’ll wig out,” he gladly finished for her, waving around his fingers as he spoke. “He told me about the small changes he allowed.”
“Exactly,” she laughed.
“Were you just saying all that to convince yourself that it’s fine for me to be here?” He inquired, smirking
“Maybe,” she trailed. “I just don’t want to mess up, cross a line, have Jay find out and wig out and treat me like a doll again. You know?” She shrugged, belting out her explanation with a single breath.
“I know,” Jake nodded, giving her a comforting smile.
Y/N had to wonder why she was letting this happening, why she found herself enjoying his company and the conversations he started up. She could have easily chalked it up to the lack of human interaction during all these years. She could have easily chalked it up to the desperation of needing valid attention.
He was sitting in front of her, with the first two buttons of his shirt undone, his fingers trailing up and down his thigh and he listened and spoke. He had a perfectly charming smile and a perfectly carved nose. He had eyes shaped like pointy almonds and his laugh- Y/N loved making him laugh.
If Y/N could box up his laugher and get lost in how ridiculously restricted it sounded, she would. Perhaps it was his laughter that put her to sleep that night, unaware of just how tired the adrenaline rush made her.
But it was the same adrenaline rush and the absence of laughter that woke her up hours later. Her head lifted off her pillow with a gasp, hands fisting her duvet when she realised Jake was still in her room, sleeping in the chair with his head thrown back.
The sight of him at peace didn’t stop her from gaping, though. “Oh, my God,” she said, then repeated herself a little louder. That was enough for Jake’s eyes to shoot open and look around in complete confusion.
“What?” He rubbed his eyes with his palms, fingers scaling through his scalp as he fixed his hair. “What is it?” He mumbled.
Y/N squinted her eyes, forgetting for a split second that he wasn’t supposed to be in her room. “How is it that your hair is still perfect?” Her lips parted while she dramatically parted.
Jake’s face fell, a disinterest washing over him as he stared at the messily clothed girl in front of him. “You were freaking out a second ago and now this?” He raised his brows.
“Oh, yeah!” Her fingers buried in her face. “You’re still in my room!” She reminded him like it was no big deal but the clench of her jaw betrayed her.
The warm Italian sun was rising and shone its light through the curtains. Jake found himself flinching at the hasty realisation, jumping out of his chair and straightening his shirt. “Shit,” he cursed. “I’m not supposed to be here.”
“No shit Sherlock!” Y/N scoffed, pushing the duvet off her legs and trudging towards the door. “Go back to your room before Jay wakes up,” she opened the door and Jake gladly followed with fisted hands.
“You think he’ll find out?” He stood at the entrance, hands holding the doorframe.
“He will if you stay any longer,” she closed the door as a scoff left his lips. “I’m sorry you had to sleep on a chair!” Then the door clicked shut and her back leaned on the door, a hand running down her face.
It was then she realised the grim on her face and stench on her skin but she didn’t find it in her to shower. Instead, she mulled over the number of ways the rest of the day could go while sitting on the edge of her bed and fixating on the chair Jake had slept on.
Now that she thought about it, her hotel room wasn’t as spacious as she thought. The ivory carpet was comfortable, and the golden lights seemed to brighten the bathroom more than the actual room. The bed was large and had pillows cosier than the ones back at home- Jay’s house.
All of that didn’t matter because today would be the day she would venture the streets of Naples and eat something other than five-star dishes for every meal. The thought brought a smile on her face, an exhausted smile but a smile nonetheless.
When she moved towards her suitcases, her door opened again and her face fell, lips pursing. “Good morning,” she heard her brother say, his sarcastic smile could be heard from a mile away.
“Morning,” she sang, the same sarcastic smile spreading on her face as she turned to look at him.
“You’re chipper,” he commented. “Why?”
He was oblivious to the fact that his trusted, loyal and honest right-hand man was previously in the room.
“Because I have a request that I know you won’t turn down,” she smiled ignorantly, a sparkle in her eyes and Jay strolled towards her, rolling his eyes.
“Ah, yes,” he mused. “Last day in Italy and the first day of filling your dream of getting the small sliver of freedom you’ve been chasing,” he taunted, holding up his thumb and index as he described what he meant by small.
“Come on, don’t ruin my mood,” she slapped his chest with the back of her hand. “When are we leaving, anyway?”
“Late in the evening,” he informed. “So whatever activities you have planned for today, they better fit the schedule,” he added.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I just want to go shopping and try pastries,” she shrugged. Jay’s face contorted into mild disgust.
“You really are miserable,” he commented, though it was obvious to be passed on as a joke.
“No, I just want to enjoy the little things in life,” she insisted.
“Please, don’t become a romantic,” he whined, his hand raising to hover in front of him.
“I’ve always been a romantic,” she snarled. “You’d know that if you bothered to spend a little time with me.”
“You’d be surprised,” he rolled his eyes. “Just don’t drag Jake into your romantic fantasies,” he waved his hand.
“You’re not funny,” she rolled her eyes. “And for someone who trusts Jake so much, you really have a way of being subtle about your concerns,” she pointed out. “Why?”
“Doesn’t matter how much I trust him,” Jay replied. “I know you and I know you’ll do something stupid and drag him into it with you. Why did you think I ordered Sunoo and Jungwon never to talk to you?”
“Seriously?” She scoffed, mouth gaping. “You thought I’d fall in love with them or something?”
“No,” he trailed. “But that might as well happen with Jake.”
“Wow, you trust him so much,” he taunted, drawling out her sarcasm.
“Seriously, Y/N. Don’t make me regret being lenient,” he scrunched up his face. “And it’s weird enough that I’m having a conversation about love and emotions with you,” he cringed while pulling out his phone. Y/N assumed he was going to call Jake.
She agreed with a tut, hands reaching into her suitcase to find new clothes to wear. Curiosity washed over her and she looked at her brother through her lashes. She licked her lips. “What would you do if something did happen between him and me?”
Her question was unacknowledged because he already had his phone pressed to his ear.
When Jake entered his hotel room, he wasn’t expecting Heeseung and Sunghoon to be sitting on his bed, with looks of what he thought was concern on their faces. He furrowed his brows and tilted his head. “What are you doing here?”
“Waiting for you,” Heeseung replied. “You’re supposed to join us for breakfast in a couple minutes, Jake. Where were you?”
Heeseung and Sunghoon glared at him, though it was unintentional. Jake looked between the pair with hard eyes, contemplating if he could be honest with them. They’d find out, anyway. One way or another.
“I was in Y/N’s room the entire night,” he confessed.
Heeseung’s jaw fell and he stood up, stepping towards Jake. “What, are you her new bodyguard?”
“I guess you could say that,” he shrugged. “But I wasn’t supposed to be in her room.”
That was enough to have Heeseung leering at him, his hands reaching to fist his collar and dared to threaten him. “Listen,” he seethed. “I know Jay won’t literally kill us- his friends- when we mess up but his sister is a different story. He will explode if he finds out-”
“Can you calm down?” Jake pushed Heeseung off of himself, just as annoyed as he was. “I was just in there talking to her,” he defended.
“Without his permission,” Heeseung added.
“He won’t find out unless one of us tells him,” Jake rolled his eyes.
Heeseung looked over his shoulder to connect his eyes with Sunghoon. The pair were worried, for Jake and themselves. They’d keep a secret, no questions asked, but it wouldn’t take long for the situation to unravel and become something more than a mess.
“You’re gonna get caught up with her,” Heeseung warned.
Jake tutted, then scoffed as his hands rested on his hips. “I already am!” He exclaimed. “I’ve been watching over her for years, I know all her schedules and the books she reads like the back of my hand. Can you honestly blame me for wanting to know more?”
Sunghoon sighed, leaving the bed and strolling towards Jake with furrowed brows. “No, I guess we can’t blame you,” he agreed, but the twitch on his mouth told him that he had more to say. “But whatever you do, don’t get yourself in trouble. Don’t throw around Jay’s trust. Don’t fuck yourself over.”
He clapped Jake’s shoulder twice and pursed his lips. Before the conversation could continue further, Jake’s phone rang and he rushed to get it out of his pocket. “It’s Jay,” he mumbled but a part of him knew that he wasn’t in trouble. He ushered the pair in front of him to calm down when he pressed the phone to his ear.
“Are you awake?” Jay’s voice rang loud and clear.
“Wide awake,” Jake answered.
“Good,” Jay said. “Be ready in thirty minutes. My sister wants to go shopping and as much as I dread it, I’ll still have to comply.”
Jake found himself chuckling and the boys in front of him looked at him, confused. “Where am I supposed to take her?”
“I don’t know, a mall? Some shopping street?” The confusion in Jake’s voice was hard to miss. No one could blame him, though. He didn’t know the first thing about letting his sister have fun. “She said something about enjoying the little things in life.”
“Right, got it,” Jake nodded and then hung up the phone.
He ushered Heeseung and Sunghoon out of his room after explaining the schedule for his day. The two boys glanced warningly at him for the last time before Jake shut the door and took a minute to himself. He leaned his back on the door, hands covering his face as he groaned and cursed at himself.
The next half an hour went past like a blur- he wore a shirt similar to the one he wore prior, black pants and leather shoes, a watch to top it all off. When he entered Y/N’s room, he walked into the sight of Jay handing Y/N his credit card. They then turned to him and bid him their greetings.
The rest went downhill from there because he found himself driving to the nearest shopping street. Y/N thought malls were suffocating. He found himself glancing at her while she sat beside him, wanting to reach over and play with the end of her sundress.
Then he found himself carrying at least five shopping bags, filled with cheap dresses and tacky jewellery that looked beautiful regardless- and would certainly look stunning on her. She laughed and giggled and twirled as she skipped down the rocky pavement with a newly bought sun hat on her head. It matched her outfit to a tea.
Jake followed her without complaints. He was annoyed, yes, but that didn’t stop him from smiling at how happy she was. It was like she was on top of the world, exploring for the first time in her life.
“You know, Jay was being nice to me this morning?” She said while walking beside him, a few shopping bags hanging from her forearm too. “Sort of.”
“Oh, yeah?” Jake smirked as she nodded enthusiastically. “What’d he say?”
“Well, he was being his usual overprotective self and all,” she started. “But in like a nice way. A funny, trying to keep it loose kind of way. He was talking about love and all with me,” she glanced at him from the corner of his eyes, waiting for a response.
“I knew he was trying to be open with you but I wasn’t expecting that,” he chuckled. “What’d he say exactly?”
“To not drag you into a mess,” she responded nonchalantly with a shrug.
“Me?” He asked, blinking with surprise as he gripped the shopping bags tighter. “Odd,” he commented.
“I know,” she crooned. “He thinks I’ll fall in love with you or something. I don’t blame him for thinking that but Jay saying it out loud is just weird.”
Jake stared at the ground, swallowing a lump in his throat as he nodded. His hair covered his forehead, rosy red lips threatening to fall into a frown. “Yeah,” he said. “Weird.”
Y/N laughed, apologising for even bringing up the topic and skipping past him and into a cafe. He followed with a groan, padding his way past the door and letting her order whatever it was that she was craving- a cheesecake, blonde brownies and two cups of coffee, one for her and the other for him.
They found a booth somewhere in the corner, against the yellow bricked wall and beside a few potted plants. They rid themselves of the weight of the shopping bags and sat across from each other, sipping their coffees and enjoying the warm blonde brownies and cheesecake.
“Did you enjoy today?” Jake asked while he jabbed his fork into Y/N’s cheesecake.
“Very much,” she grinned, chewing on a mouthful of brownies. “I plan on dragging Jay into my room so I can do a little haul for him. I’m sure he’ll love it.”
“He’ll suffer,” he laughed and as did she, agreeing.
“I’m just trying to bond with him,” she reasoned. “He’ll go back to being cold-hearted soon but I plan on breaking that shell,” she smiled proudly.
“Well, good luck on that,” Jake offered. “I’m sure he’ll come around.”
“Hopefully,” she groaned. “I want to have a good relationship with someone from my family,” she grabbed a fork and dug at her cheesecake too.
“You don’t talk to your parents?”
“Nope,” she shook her head. “Jay acts like a messenger between them and me. They basically just handed me over to Jay and said figure it out. I have no idea why but I’m honestly better off,” she explained.
Jake didn’t understand how none of what she said bothered her. Or maybe it did, the indifference of her demeanour just hid it. He didn’t know. “Why are you better off?”
“Because,” she started, running her tongue across her teeth. “My parents are worse than my brother. Jay at least tries to keep me happy. My parents would just throw me in some room,” she cringed.
“They can’t be that bad,” Jake furrowed his brows.
“Fine, maybe I exaggerated,” she confessed. “But they still don’t care.”
“I didn’t know all that,” he waved his at her.
“Oh, really?” Y/N raised her brows in surprise. “I thought Jay would have told all of you.”
“He never talks about it.”
“Don’t blame him for that either.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, shaking the great of his questions out of his head. He blinked and wet his lips. “What else do you have planned for the day?”
“Nothing else, I had my fair share of fun,” she finished the cheesecake. “Why? Do you have something in mind?”
As a matter of fact, Jake did have something in mind. He was going to take her to Museo Cappella Sansevero which wasn’t far from where they currently were. He was going to take her to an aquarium as well and call it an unofficial date.
He’d tell Sunghoon all about how she enjoyed it and how he made her laugh. He’d brag about how he spent an entire day with a pretty girl in a building surrounded by ancient paintings and sculptures and he’d gloat about how he took pictures of her in front of fish tanks.
Well, the fantasy was thrown out the window as the image of Jay’s livid face fogged his head. It was only then that he realised the idea of an unofficial date was foolish. Selfish, too. Y/N might as well have laughed in his face if he carried it out.
So he just shook his head, a tight-lipped smile answering her question. “We don’t have much time before the evening,” he reminded. “We should get back soon so you can torture your brother with your haul.”
That is exactly what she did. She dragged Jay out of his room and into hers and forced him to sit on a chair. Despite his groans, objections and complaints, he still sat with his fingers weaved on his thigh. Y/N put on a parade, showing him the various tops, skirts and dresses she bought.
Jay thought the necklaces and earrings she got were garish. Y/N silenced him and continued gushing. She talked about how warm the sun was and how she talked to the shop owners with the little Italian she learnt in her free time. She told him about the lovely cafe where she and Jake enjoyed a cheesecake and coffee.
“What, like a date?” Was Jay’s response and Y/N threw a pillow at his disappointed face.
“The thought didn’t cross my mind,” she said. “Even if I do end up falling for your right-hand man, you should allow it because you trust him so much-”
“One, don’t cross the line. It doesn’t matter how much I trust him, my ego will still get hurt,” he cut her off. “Two, Jake shall not find out about this conversation,” he held up two fingers. “Three, I’m never talking about love with you ever again. And four, I’m trying to be a better brother so let me.”
Y/N laughed at him, collapsing on her bed as Jay chuckled with her. They couldn’t remember the last time they laughed together, a moment where anger or arguments didn’t come into the way of siblingly bonding.
That smile stayed on her face as she was being guided around the airport, arm linked with her stoic-faced brother who gently sat her down beside him in the charted flight. They didn’t talk. In fact, the siblings enjoyed the comfortable silence between them as one read a magazine and the other sat with earphones plugged.
When they reached home, Jay told her to sleep in her room while he and the rest of the boys dealt with something he wouldn’t tell her about. “You can worry about unpacking tomorrow,” he said and she fell right to sleep.
She thought her sleep schedule would start messing up if she kept waking up in the middle of the night. A creak made her groan awake and as she opened her eyes, she was met by the sight of Jake and his innocent smile.
Y/N tiredly smiled back at him, mumbling out a question that neither of them could comprehend. He chuckled, allowing his fingers to brush away the hair from her face. She rubbed her eyes, pushing herself to lean against her headboard. “What are you doing here?” She murmured.
“Thought I’d wish you a good night,” he whispered back, crouching down to get a better look at her.
“How sweet of you,” she cracked a smile, leaning into the fingers that rested against her cheek. “But you didn’t have to wake me up.”
“Sorry, I wasn’t trying to,” he coyed. “I’m not supposed to be here,” he said, reminding himself rather than informing her.
“No, no you’re not,” she agreed. “But now you woke me up and I won’t fall back asleep any time soon,” her expression fell somewhere between a pout and frown and Jake found himself swooning.
“I can’t sleep either,” he shrugged a shoulder, tracing his fingers down her jaw.
Y/N doesn’t respond to that, just smiled warmly and moved enough to push away her blanket. Jake looked at her a little confused, then questioningly but complied anyway. He crawled beside her, meekly moving his arm over her shoulders and she gladly got comfortable.
“If only Jay could see this,” she snorted. “He’d be furious if he saw his right-hand man putting his sister to sleep.”
“Which is why you need to speak a little more quietly,” he uttered, but the pair laughed anyway. They struggled to hold it in and ended up in a laughing mess. But they were quiet enough. Nobody woke up.
“Sorry,” she chuckled. “My sense of humour is broken.”
“Pretty obvious.”
Y/N laughed at that again, one hand covering her mouth and the other lightly hitting his chest. “Oh, my God,” she snickered. “Not laughing is harder than I thought.”
“Tell me about it,” Jake took a deep breath. “But it’s better than lying awake all night with nothing to do, right?”
“Exactly.”
The pair turn towards each other, eyes connecting for only a second, smiles stretching to create a memory that would probably be burnt into their heads. Y/N looks away first, mostly because it was an involuntary action but also because she wasn’t ready to break another rule in one night. Jake took a second, eyes easily gliding down the bridge of her nose to the turn of her jaw. Then he looked away too.
It was quiet for exactly twenty seconds where Y/N thought about what conversation to strike up next while Jake’s head was riddled with ifs and possibilities of what would happen if Jay walked into her room. It was probably not the best thing to think about while her head was nestling into his arm.
“Why do you think Jay is trying to be better?”
Turns out, Y/N was thinking about the same person. A different reason but the same person, regardless. Fear was what she felt, a small dent in her stomach bringing her nerves. She knew what she was doing was wrong, to be letting herself feel so comfortable lying next to someone she acquainted with for less than a week.
“Because you asked him,” he said, though he wasn’t so sure of his answer. “He probably realised that he can’t control you for the rest of your life.”
“I hope so,” she sighed. “I’m turning nineteen soon, I’d like to build a life for myself,” she stated.
Jake shifts his head, eyes glancing at her hair. “When?”
“In a week,” she said, fingers reaching to play with the ends of her hair.
“Oh, Yeah,” he breathed. “I remember.”
“You do?” Y/N shifted her head too and Jake’s chin touches her hair. She doesn’t seem to give a response to the contact but a swarm of butterflies rushed to his stomach and a chill ran down his spine- stark emotions colliding within his body.
“Of course,” he swallowed. “Jay always reminds us. He gets excited.”
“Really?” Her heart swelled, a warmth wrapping around her as she realised just how much her brother actually cared. “I didn’t know.”
“He didn’t want you to know,” he said. “He’d be embarrassed if he found out you knew.”
“I can keep a secret,” she grinned.
Jake grinned back, tightly. “What presents does he give you?”
“A ring,” she simply said and Jake’s brows lifted at the mundane response.
“A ring?”
“Yeah,” she nodded enthusiastically. “Every year since I was three, he buys me a ring for every birthday. I’m going to get the sixteenth one next week,” she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. “I’m only realising how much he cares.”
“I don’t blame you,” he cleared his throat, slumping further into her bed. That made her head fall against his shoulder- he had no complaints. “The bad parts overshadow the good parts, most of the time.”
“That’s true,” she nodded.
They were both tired, it was becoming rather obvious. Y/N smacked her lips together, eyes fighting to stay open. But she slipped into slumber, soon enough. Jake didn’t notice until he looked at her again, her breath steady and moonlight highlighting her cheekbone.
He sighed in defeat, slowly sliding his arm away as she fell back on her pillow and Jake slipped out of her bed. He took the liberty to properly drape the blanket over her body, covering her arms and legs equally. She nuzzled into her pillow, humming. He slowly crept out of her room.
The nights leading to her birthday went the same way. She didn’t ask him to, but he’d slip into her room to talk to her every night. He’d blame it on the lack of interaction between them during the day because he was either busy with paperwork or she was given no other choice but to stay in her room.
She usually spent breakfast with Jay, where they would talk about the most random things that came to mind. It was an unspoken rule- for Y/N to never ask about what he did for work every day. She was content enough with laughing and bonding with her brother.
Lunch and dinner, though, she was either sitting alone on the dining table in an empty house or sitting in her room with her face stuffed with food. The tv was usually playing a movie, other times she listened to music.
It wasn’t as depressing as it sounded, the constant loop her life scheduled. Because she had two highlights in her days. One in the morning, where she’d chat with her brother and the other at night, where Jake would lay beside her and keep her company until she fell asleep.
Neither did Jake talk about what he did in his day. He’d usually just tell her the gist- exhausting, boring, typical day for someone who worked in the business he did. With that answer, Y/N had to wonder what it was that she was being protected from, why she was being guarded like a precious gem that could be stolen. She realised she’d rather not know and she’d realised that they’d rather not tell. Living in a plane of oblivion was always better.
He once told her about his life in Australia and how he used to be with his parents and big brother. He talked about his dog, Layla, like he was talking about the love of his life and it made her smile. His accent finally made sense.
Y/N didn’t have much to tell Jake. Her life was boring. She elaborated on Pearl and how Jay had always had a crush on her when they were kids. They collectively made fun of him for sleeping with her even with the knowledge of her marriage.
She also told him how Jay finally told her about Andrei and how he and her dad were childhood friends. Andrei was the reason Jay was part of a mob and he was the reason they got to live in both luxury and misery.
When her birthday finally came, Jake didn’t have the chance to wish her. He knew for a fact that Jay would be surprising her at the stroke of twelve. That was exactly what happened.
Y/N, oblivious to her brother’s plans, was still awake, waiting for Jake to come into her like he was doing for the past week. But it was safe to say that she was much happier seeing Jay tip-toe into her room with a small birthday cake in his palms.
He had an excited smile on his face- a smile she rarely saw- as he sang Happy Birthday. A single candle was lit on the birthday cake and she quickly blew it out. The small celebration happened quietly and lasted until the pair managed to finish the cake. Before he let her sleep, despite knowing it’d be hard with the sugar rush, he handed her a birthday gift.
Another ring, like Y/N wished and expected for. A ring that was shaped with flowers, colourful enamel painted on the petals. “That is the opposite of tacky,” he said and she laughed at his humour.
She was glad that he could freely joke around with her, regardless of the situation.
She didn’t see Jake that entire day because her brother took her out for the first time in a long time. She wasn’t complaining, mostly because she was too engrossed in the empty park they walked around and the empty theatre they watched a movie in.
Regardless of how much Jay was willing to let Y/N have fun, he sure as hell wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to book out entire parks and theatres. He had the money, so why not.
Y/N honestly didn’t care as long as she was with him. She couldn’t remember the last time she enjoyed a day out with her brother.
They got home later in the evening and Y/N agreed to stay in her room for the rest of the day. When she walked past Jungwon and Sunoo, they wished her a happy birthday- she smiled gratefully at them, then shut the door of her room and sunk into the white sheets of her bed.
Suddenly it was like her old life chased her down, following the same loop she was so used to. Today was a rare day, a special day that probably wouldn’t be repeating itself until next year. It was just one day.
She wondered if she could plan something special for Jay’s birthday, too.
That night, when the moonlight filtered through her curtains and crickets chirped, Jake snuck into her room again, a determined look on his face. He held something in his hand, hiding it behind his back as he cautiously made his way towards her bed.
“Hey,” Y/N whispered to him, a beaming smile on her face.
“Hey,” he cooed back. “I didn’t get to see you all day,” he said as he slipped under the sheets beside her.
“I was with Jay the entire day,” she explained. “A special birthday surprise,” she jazzed her hands, earning a low chuckle from Jake.
“Before you tell me about it,” he started. “Happy birthday,” he crooned as a finger reached to tap her nose. They smiled at each other, humming. “And I got you something,” he added and pulled out an averagely sized box.
Y/N gasped softly. “You really didn’t have to,” she insisted but he shook his head, ushering her to move and sit in front of him. She complied, both crossing their legs as they sat in front of each other. Jake opened the box to reveal a bracelet, a simple, silver chain that would wrap around her wrist.
“It’s not much, but it’s something you’d like,” he smiled sheepishly.
“You’re right,” she gushed. “I love it.”
“Can I put it on for you?”
She nodded enthusiastically and Jake softly reached for her hands, fingers nimbly wrapping the bracelet around her wrist, cool metal touching warm skin. He was right, it suited her.
“Thank you,” she lifted her hand to ogle at the bracelet around her wrist. “It’s so pretty.”
“Pretty girl deserves pretty gifts,” the words slipped out involuntarily. He played it off with a shrug and leaned against the headboard. Y/N trained her eyes on him, moving closer so that their knees were touching. “How’d your day go, then?”
“Oh, right,” she chewed the inside of her cheek. “Jay came into my room with cake at exactly twelve in the night and then in the morning we went to a park and ate ice cream. Then we went to watch a movie.”
“Jay really did all that?”
“Granted, he did book out the entire park and theatre but it was still fun,” she added, a sly grin taking over her pursed lips.
“That’s the catch I was waiting for,” he laughed. “What about your parents?”
“They messaged me a birthday wish and sent me some money,” she scoffed, darting her eyes away for a brief second. “They act like they’re some distant relative of mine,” she commented.
“At least, you have Jay and me,” he offered. Y/N nodded, agreeing with a minuscule grin.
Silence followed with that. Neither of them were complaining, though, because they just gazed at each other, pupils fighting the dim moonlight. Y/N found it in herself to move her hands towards his, nimble fingers playing with his. She always thought he had pretty hands and she knew how bizarre it sounded.
Jake watched as her hands played with his fingers and recalled how he wanted her to do the exact thing. Her index scaled the span of his palm, then the crevices between his knuckles and veins. She paid so much attention to the one thing she was doing, he found it adorable.
“Can you believe that less than two weeks ago, Jay and I were at each others’ throats?” She mumbled, a light chuckle following her observation.
Jake hummed. “Can you believe that less than two weeks ago, you and I were strangers to each other?” He nodded between himself and her.
“Yeah,” she giggled. “And all it took was for me to be a whiney brat,” she muffled the cackle that left her mouth.
Jake laughed at her, chest rising and falling as he felt his heart race, banging against his ribs as Y/N absentmindedly wrapped her palm around his two fingers. Her delicate, little hand around his. He would curse if he could.
“I’m pleased with the way things turned out.”
While Y/N nodded, Jake let his free hand wrap around her wrist, tugging her towards him. It was clear that she wasn’t expecting it, almost slipping onto his lap. But Jake caught her, his other hand holding her waist as her palms landed on his chest.
He exhaled, chest heaving as her body pressed against his, lips parted. Y/N darted her eyes across his face, flitting to read what he was feeling. “I’m pleased too,” she gulped, smiling ever so lightly that anyone could have missed it.
“Good,” then his fingers were wrapped around her chin, guiding her face closer to his. Their eyes fluttered shut in unison and Jake caught her lips with his.
Y/N wouldn’t say that she felt sparks fly. No, it was something subtler yet more intense. It was like waves of butterflies crashed down on her, the back of her head tingled and her spine would have given up if it wasn’t for Jake holding her tight. As her hand travelled towards his jaw, she felt fire between her fingers.
A moan parted from her throat, her brows furrowing when Jake’s lips parted from her with a wet smack. Y/N’s eyes fluttered open, breathless just as he was. “Was that supposed to be my second birthday gift?”
Jake chuckled dryly, shaking his head as he leaned towards her again. “Take it as whatever you want,” he pecked her, repeatedly, punctuating each with a smile as his hands buried in her hair.
If it weren’t for the air conditioning, she was sure she’d spontaneously combust out of joy, excitement and ardour. She wouldn’t say she was pining over him. Hell, they only started talking a week ago. But a part of her knew he was pining for her, for a longer time than she knew.
He made it quite obvious. He was so nice to her, so caring and endearing. The bracelet as a birthday gift just gave him away. Maybe she was happy, maybe she was scared. She didn’t know which overpowered what as her brain turned into mush while he held her.
All she knew was that she liked him and he liked her. What more could she possibly ask for?
Right. Her brother’s acceptance.
“Shit,” she cursed as Jake’s palm pressed the small of her back, her chest arching into his. He sighed, darting his eyes up and down her face before kissing her nose, and then her cheek and then her forehead but his lips found their way back to hers nevertheless.
“What is it?” He breathed, giving up and resting his chin in the croon of her neck. She slumped against him, her arms latching around his neck and the smell of lavender filled her nose.
“Jay,” she reminded him.
“I just kissed you,” he pointed out. “And you’re thinking of your brother?”
“Exactly, you just kissed me,” she whined. “And if he finds out-”
“How will he find out?” Jake hummed as Y/N pushed herself off him, sitting inches away from his touch. His fingertips traced her cheek, pushing back any strand of hair that covered her face.
Oh, how long he had waited for this exact moment, to have her freely for him to touch. For her hands to explore his face and chest and for his hands to disappear in her hair. But there would always be something stopping him- them.
“I don’t know,” she hissed. “It’s Jay! He’ll find out somehow!”
“Then let’s just hope he doesn’t find out any time soon,” he tried. “I’m not gonna let him ruin this.”
Then Y/N felt butterflies in her stomach again and she fought the smile that threatened to grace her features. Jake didn’t hesitate to grin, pulling her closer to him and letting his hand roam her waist, fingers sliding under her shirt and trailing lines across the band of her pants.
She giggled, lips tracing his jaw and complaint that she felt ticklish. He told her that it was the whole point- she whined as she kissed his jugular. Jake’s hands refused to leave her hips, he held her in place, praying that he could have a few more minutes to spend just like that.
They didn’t know how long they stayed that way, lips on each other’s necks, hands teasing the little exposed skin they could find. But however long it was, nothing seemed to be enough. Jake left her room when Y/N started feeling sleepy. He left with a kiss to her head and mouth and slipped past her door.
She woke up early regardless and she chalked it up to the adrenaline that still surged through her veins. The previous night’s activities dazed her head as she raced down the stairs and into the kitchen. Jay sat at the dining table just like she expected, a plate of waffles with whipped cream sitting in front of him. His attention stayed on his phone, though, even when she settled beside him.
“Good morning,” she sang but received no answer. Well, if she counted a hum as an answer, then so be it.
The cook hurried to hand her a plate of waffles as well and she smiled at him, reaching for a fork and knife. She wasted no time in eating, oblivious to the way her brother’s jaw clenched and unclenched, eyes narrowed to an empty screen on her phone.
“Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?” She chuckled, chewing a mouthful of waffles.
Jay tutted, shaking his head and shoving his phone into his pocket. “I might as well have,” he grumbled. “How does one react to finding their right-hand man sneaking out of their sister’s room in the middle of the night,” and his hand reached for a tissue, wiping it between his fingers.
Y/N stilled her actions, fork falling out of her hand as her eyes connected with her brother. He was truly livid, fires of anger blazing in his eyes as his fingers intertwined under his chin.
“What?” She blinked, a chill running down her spine. Her hand hovered in the air, hair falling into her eyes, mouth agape.
“Don’t play dumb,” he rolled his eyes. “Do you know how angry I was?”
“What did you do?” She panicked, palms pressing against the slick wood of the table. The cutlery shook, her plate might as well have dropped to the floor.
“Yelled at him for a good fucking hour,” he seethed.
“That’s all you did?”
Jay doesn’t respond but takes his knife and fork to his waffles. Y/N watched patiently but it felt like her head could detonate at any given second. The worse possible scenarios crossed her mind- was Jake still his right-hand man?
“He’s still alive, if that’s what you’re wondering,” he said nonchalantly. “He’s not just my right-hand man. He’s my best friend. I’m not cruel enough to kill him.”
If she could, she would sigh out of relief. But more questions surfaced. But she wasn’t in a place to ask him anything. After all, she did betray him.
“Not two weeks and he’s bought you a gift for your birthday and had the nerve to kiss you,” he let out a breath in disappointment. Y/N bowed her head down, embarrassed by just how much he knew. She couldn’t blame Jake for confessing, though. She would have confessed too. “To be fair, it was inevitable, right? Falling for the brother’s best friend- you’ve always been a clichè, right, Y/N?.”
“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, playing with her thumbs. She wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to say but it was the only appropriate response she could muster.
Jay ignored her, continuing to eat calmly. The shiny watch on his wrist slid up and down as he moved his arm while eating. Y/N knew her brother well enough to know that he was seconds away from exploding into fury. This was the calm before the storm, for all she knew.
“You’d think that I wouldn’t mind you having a rendezvous with him. You know, because I trust him and whatnot,” he continued, echoing the words she had said to him before. “But that’s the thing. I remember telling you not to drag him into your romantic fantasies,” he chewed on another piece of his waffle.
Y/N sat in her chair shaking, wondering how on earth she messed up so bad. Not two weeks and she had ruined her chance of freedom and a better relationship with her brother. Not two weeks and she proved that she didn’t deserve anything she asked for.
“Now I’m sitting here with my ego hurt. And we all know how I am when my ego is hurt” he reminded. “But I’m torn between minding my own business and doing something about it. So tell me, what should I do?”
It was a rhetorical question. Y/N knew that. She felt like a little girl being scolded by her parents after committing a small crime. But this wasn’t a small crime. It was a mistake that might as well cost her relationship with her brother. So she just sat there and took it. She was on the verge of tears, the corners of her lips twitching downwards.
“Because I don’t want to do something about it. You’re legally an adult. You can do whatever you want, right?” He coaxed, staring daggers into her head. “Right?” Y/N hesitantly nodded as he persisted. “Which means you can take care of yourself. So why need me at all? Why do I have to bend over backwards to do everything in my power to make sure not a hair on your head gets hurt?”
“Jay-”
“I’m doing everything I can to keep you safe,” he said. “But guess what? You aren’t the only one telling me that I’m being unfair. Heeseung, Sunghoon, Jungwon- all of them. I don’t want to know why they have a sudden interest in you and the way I treat you. But call it peer pressure. I was being convinced. And not two weeks, you find a way to make me regret being nice to you.”
“So you only put effort into being a better brother because of them?”
“No, Y/N. Everything I did was so I could call you a sister. So that you could look at me like I’m your brother. Not some monster that locks you up in your room all day,” he insisted, slamming the cutlery in his hands onto the table. “Can you blame me for being angry that you and Jake have your thing going on?”
“No.”
“What am I going to do when you have a falling out? What am I going to do if Jake, my right-hand man, my best friend, is the reason you get hurt?” He retorted, eyes squinting. “I can’t abandon him. Neither can I abandon you, can I?”
“What if we don’t have a falling out?” With the sudden surge of confidence, Y/N spoke back, head tilting at her proposal.
“Funny thing is, Jake said the same thing,” he scoffed. Like on cue, Jake was walking into the kitchen. The fear in his eyes covered by the clench in his jaw and fisted hands. Jay and Y/N turned their heads to look at him. “You did say that, didn’t you, Jake?”
Jake nodded, training his eyes on Jay as Y/N willed herself not to cry. Everything was going to be fine.
“But that’s the thing. Who are you to predict what might happen in the future?” He pursued. “It’s always best to prepare for the worse, right?”
“But why?” Y/N whispered. “Nothing bad will happen- Jay, I like him,” she reasoned. The girl might as well burst into sobs as she pointed between Jake and herself. “You and him are the only people I have in my life.”
“I know,” Jay growled. “That is what leads me to my conclusion.”
Jake and Y/N shared glances, both scared and confused. “What’s your conclusion?” Jake urged.
Silence was what followed as Jay continued eating. All Y/N and Jake could do was stare and wait patiently. This was their punishment, the silence that followed the verdict. The numerous thoughts and possibilities that conjured in their heads.
What could possibly happen now?
The sound of metal clattering with porcelain seemed to be the only distraction. Y/N fought the urge to coax him, force an answer out of him because she swore if she waited any longer, she’d go crazy.
Jay even stood up and kept his plate in the dishwasher. He cleared his throat, dusted his shirt and ran a hand through his annoyingly bleached blonde hair. He glanced at his sister and his right-hand man and gave them a curt not.
“You can do whatever you want.”
Y/N gaped, her jaw might as well have hit the floor, eyes involuntarily widening as she started her brother up and down. It was safe to say Jake gave the same expression, hands hovering in front of him.
“What?” Y/N asked.
“I’m furious,” Jay reminded the pair, the same stoic expression on his face. “But I’ll allow it. You’re so confident in yourselves, right? So be it, I’ll let you two live it down. Call this a test. I was just trying to see if you’re answers would stay the same.”
“You can’t be serious,” Jake stared, stepping closer to Y/N.
“I am being serious,” Jay said simply. “I accept this relationship,” it took every muscle in his body not to cringe.
Then Jay walked out of the kitchen because he didn’t know what he would do if he continued the conversation. Y/N and Jake were left frozen in their spots. They were still confused, puzzled at what just happened. So there was no storm, Y/N thought to herself, and he raged for so long just because he was mad.
Would it be appropriate to cause after her brother and hug him? Probably not the right timing.
She knew how much Jay had to suppress to let out the words he just said. So all she could do was be grateful. Her mouth only closed when Jake touched her chin with his fingers. She blinked, shaking her head and looking at Jake.
“What just happened?” She asked.
“I think we just got Jay’s blessings,” Jake mused, pulling a chair beside her and collapsing in it. A sigh left his lips, hands resting on the table as he tilted his head towards her.
“How are you so calm?”
“Why would I not be?”
Jake looked back to the prior night when Jay had caught him walking out of her room. He looked back to the way Jay seethed at him and spewed words but the tears that brimmed his eyes were unmistakable. Jay wasn’t just angry, he was giving Jake the protective brother talk.
Maybe a part of him saw this coming. Jay couldn’t do anything to stop it. Well, he could turn to physical force but he wasn’t as cruel as people made him out to be. So he wasn’t worried. He knew Jay would come around to it someday, learn to be happy with the way things turned out.
Because the way things turned out wasn’t so bad, after all.
“What did he say to you?” Y/N’s hand moved to rest on his, thumb touching his knuckles. She moved closer to him; Jake chuckled and placed his hand on her knee.
“Not important,” he assured. “But can we just celebrate? This is the best day of my life!”

Billy can’t seem to ignore calls from his dad and he doesn’t know why. When his name pops up on his phone every instinct in him says to ignore it, yet theres some deeper drive pushing him to follow through. He picks up, and then hates himself for it later. That man has a talent for disguising his cruelty as parental concern and being states away from Hawkins hasn’t changed that. He’ll call every other week to ‘check in’, interrogating Billy about his progress in college or how much he’s making at the garage. What bothers him most is when his dad inquires about you.
“That girl still putting up with you?” or “Sure you didn’t drug her?” and sometimes, “What do you two even do together? Paint each other’s toenails?”
All of this is accompanied by laughter, playing it off as a joke until Billy shows it bothers him. At which point Neil turns reprimanding.
“So damn emotional. Did I not teach you well enough how to be a man?”
Be a man.
Billy’s told you about growing up under that command and how impossible it was. Neil didn’t want his son to be a man. He didn’t want a loyal, intelligent, passionate kid. The kid he had. He wanted a pet. Someone he could direct and who would follow orders. Take a kick from time to time and never complain, never fight back, only bend further and further. It was impossible to be this without filling up with some poison. Tidal waves of anger and despair. Billy had felt all of it throughout his life and now he’s away. He’s far from Hawkins and his dad but he’s still carrying it around. His weather follows him, storm clouds erupting above his head when Neil calls. Why the fuck does he answer?
He started the morning with one of these calls and like no other time it’s filled him with so much fury. His anger persisted through the day, making work drag on. Even his workout was intense as he strained his body, full of indignation. He came home still swelled with anger, his mind rolling over questions that were infuriatingly hard to answer. Why did it still matter what his dad thought of him? Why does he care so much when he makes jokes about you? Why does he answer? Why can’t he stop feeling like a failure no matter what he accomplishes? No matter how often you tell him you love him why can’t he stop wondering when you’re gonna leave? Why can’t he truly trust anyone?
He comes home, sweaty, and miserable, anger seeping from his pores. He doesn’t look at you when he walks into the little apartment.
“Hey,” you call from the kitchen where you’re leaning against the counter flipping through recipes on your phone.
“Hey,” he mumbles and disappears into the bedroom, his gym bag on his shoulder. Instantly, the air is tense. You’ve been around Billy long enough to know when he’s close to erupting. You pad over to the bedroom, leaning against the doorjam. His face is red and tight, eyes dark as he strips from his musty gym stuff. He still won’t look at you.
“I’m thinking about salmon for dinner but I don’t know.”
He doesn’t respond, tossing his clothes toward the hamper but not in it. You cross the room and correct this.
“We could order out–”
“I don’t care.”
His tone is careless and heavy with warning as he marches naked into the bathroom. Your eyes slip down to watch his beautiful asscheeks as he goes. Then the door shuts, cutting off your view. You hear the shower turn on and plop down on the bed, hearing the old frame creak. You’re not sure what’s got him upset this time, but you’d hoped going to the gym would fix it because you’ve been missing his body all day and it’s killing you. If you were allowed to touch yourself when he wasn’t around, you would’ve played with your toys while he was working out. It would’ve been so nice to fill yourself, fucking your cunt with the dildo he’d gotten you for Christmas, imagining it was him. You catch yourself rubbing your thighs together, your lips so wet they slip against each other.
You lay back and pull up your skirt and your hand goes to your panties for just a moment. Just one squeeze of your clit between your middle and ring fingers, making it pulse. A soft sound escapes and you snatch your hand away, pulling down your skirt. It doesn’t matter how bad you want it, rules are rules and you have to be good. You get up and cross to the mirror on the dresser. Maybe it’s not so unfortunate that he’s mad tonight. He’ll need a release for all that aggression.
You change into a dress you know he loves on you. The one you’re not allowed to wear out because it hugs you so well, showing off your cleavage and riding up when you walk. Once dressed, you pluck a book you’ve read a dozen times from the shelf and lay on your stomach on the bed, ass facing the bathroom door. You consider taking off your panties, but he likes peeling them off himself. So you lay there, unable to see a single word on the page because all you can visualize is him diving face-first into your pussy.
He’d eaten you for a solid hour a week before, slow and sloppy while you lay there melting into his mouth again and again. The memory sends a shiver through you. Then, you remember just the other night, you’d aced a an exam he helped you study for and your reward had been getting filled from behind while a vibrating buttplug pulsed in your ass. You came so hard it made you cry. God, you want that again. Behind you, the shower turns off, and your stomach flutters with anticipation. You stop your wiggling hips, sometimes they move on their own but right now you have to be patient.
The bathroom door opens and you jolt, staring uncomprehendingly at the book in your hand. You hear Billy stop in the doorway, feel his eyes on you, giving you goosebumps. The silence feels like a living thing. It breathes between you and hardly leaves room for your shallow inhales. He moves, and his towel is flung across the bed beside you, flustering your nerves again.
“What’cha doin?”
His tone hasn’t softened a bit, and when you look back at him, you’re met with the same cold expression. If anything, his anger has set in further. His brows are a hard line above his darkened eyes, his jaw set. He looks at you, completely unamused and you’re nervous for a moment that you won’t pull this off. Then, your confidence returns, you raise your brows, your face relaxed into perfect innocence.
“Me?” you ask, your voice kitten soft, “I thought I’d read a little before making dinner.”
While you speak, you slowly move back onto your knees, your ass poking up for a moment before you sit up, your legs folded under you and sitting on your heels. The perfect little princess pose. Your gaze moves down his chest, eager to see the rest of his naked body, but he grabs your chin, lording over you.
“Uh uh, eyes up here,” he says. You look up at him, and you know he can see the desire in your eyes. He shakes his head. “You don’t want this right now, angel.”
His warning makes you salivate.
“Of course I do.” you say with complete sincerity “Fuck it all out.”
A thrill pulses down into his groin. He glares.
“I’m gonna hurt you.”
“Please.”
He scoffs.
“Really, baby?”
You nod, your mind full of fantazises, his cock driving into you, your eyes spilling over with tears, his strong arms forcing you into a hold while he cums on your face or in your ass or- he yanks you out of your thoughts and off the bed.
“Fuck-so fuckin dumb, you sweet little idiot-get on your knees.”
You obey, dropping to your knees, back in Princess Position. Finally allowed to look, your eyes are filled with his beautiful dick as he strokes it in your face. Your mouth falls open before he can ask, your tongue lulling out to eagerly flick at the drops of precum seeping from the tip. He grabs a fistful of your hair, sharply yanking you back.
“Did I say you could taste it yet?” you shake your head. “Huh?”
“No.” He smacks you quickly across the cheek. “No, sir.” you say, nearly panting from excitement. Your brain goes foggy as you watch him stroke himself. He lifts up his shaft, pushing your face underneath. Instinctively, you gently suck one of his balls into your mouth.
“There,” he groans. “That’s what you get until you earn my cock.”
You accept this, setting to work messaging his balls with your mouth, one and then the other, making him groan each time you envelope one of them. Your hands are crossed behind your back, and you know if you move them he’ll punish you, but you want so badly to get a hand around the base of his balls while you suck them. You moan at the thought, and the feeling of his nutsack on your face.
He pulls your head back and you open your mouth just in time for him to roughly shove his dick down your throat.
“Fuck,” he groans, pushing your head onto it with both hands. You squirm as it meets the back of your throat and he starts fucking your face harder than you were prepared for. Your throat fills with thick spit, your eyes already stinging. “You’re such a good slut, baby,” he says “Dumb. Fucking. Princess.”
With those three words he thrusts his cock into the back of your throat three sharp times and on the last time you gag, your throat starting to hurt.
“Ohhh,” he chuckles darkly, then pulls your head back just long enough to stick his fingers down your throat, collect a gooey spread of saliva and slap it across your face, rubbing it over your lips before ramming himself back in. He helps guide your head as you take his length, the sound of his cock churning your throat mixes with his gruff moans. You can't help wiggling, finding friction grinding against your heel. You moan as you work your clit against your heel, your panties so wet they're stuck to you.
He yanks out his dick and bends to bring his dark eyes level with yours, glaring.
“Are you fucking yourself without my permission?”
You shake your head. You didn't think it was possible for his expression to harden any more, but it does, and his grip on your hair tightens.
“You're picking the wrong time to disobey me.”
He commands you to move your heels out to the sides so you're no longer able to sit on them. Then, he reaches down and yanks up the front of your thong, making you yelp as your sensitive pussy is instantly in pain.
“Hold this.”
Your hand takes up the thong, now pulled taut up to your belly button, so tight you feel every pulse of blood to your already aching clit. He reaches down and smacks it, making you jolt and yelp again.
“Don't you move.”
You nod, and then he's back in your mouth. He slams himself in until your lips are flush against him and then fucks your throat. Spit dribbles from your chin and you struggle to breath as he stuffs your mouth over and over. You can't stop feeling the ach in your clit, screaming for release from the tension of your panties. Billy uses your throat like a stress reliever, unrelenting in the way he pounds into it, his head falling back in pleasure. Your eyes travel up, admiring the rolling mounds of muscle along his body. His strong, arms and chiseled shoulders, all the way up to his throat, where his Adam’s apple is on display, God, you sometimes fantasize about rubbing your clit around that perfect bone.
Your jaw burns, and your eyes water, clouding your vision. Your mouth is just a hot, softened hole for him to play with. He looks down at you, admiring the empty look in your eye. Meanwhile, your legs are falling asleep.
“There she is, my favorite little dummy, finally being good for me.”
A rush of pleasure pulses harshly through your tortured cunt and tears finally spill down your cheeks from the roaming flushes of pain in your body. Billy gives you a few more merciless thrusts before pulling your head back, leaving you slack jawed and panting, drool slicked down your chin.
“Get up,” he says, grabbing you by the arm he forces you to bend over. You know better than to let go of your panties or move your other arm from behind your back, so you land face first in the duvet while he runs a finger along your horribly tender pussy.
“Looks like it hurts.” He says, a sadistic thrill in his voice.
“Yes sir,” you whimper. You don't see the little smile on his face when you say that.
“Let me help.”
You think he's going to say you can let go, instead he smacks your ass so hard it genuinely scares you, forcing you to cry out in pain and surprise. The sting is still bright when he does it again and then a third time, drawing pained whimpers every time. You bury your face into the duvet.
“Better, yeah?”
You don't answer, and he's not really asking. He shoves two fingers in your pussy, a bittersweet rush of pleasure bumps against your tortured clit. He moans at the feeling of your pussy gripping his fingers.
“So greedy for me.”
He grabs you, tossing you on your back so roughly the bed frame creaks again. You quickly correct your hand, pulling it from behind you and placing it on your belly, where he likes it. Your eyes still teary, you're praying he releases your clit, but be doesn't. Instead, he kneels on the ground, a cruel grin taking over his features as he places his hot mouth over the cloth choking your pussy. It's so close to being pleasurable, so close to the thing you want that it actually makes you start whimpering.
“Please,” you whine, earning a rough slap against your clit, making you cringe in pain.
“Did I say you could speak?”
You shake your head.
“No, sir.”
“I didn't think so.” He shakes his head “I'm really trying to be nice to you, baby.”
He grabs you and repositions you on the bed, getting between your legs. Your mind fills with pleading for him, your desperation clear on your face as you impatiently watch him stroke his cock just outside your entrance.
“Hold that leg back,” he commands and you use your free hand to obey, holding your leg behind the knee while he pushes down the other one, lining up with your cunt. Please, please. But your hopes are dashed when he pulls your panties aside just enough to push his cock in, but not enough to end your suffering. A little sob leaks out as his thick length fills you.
“Fuck,” he groans, his eyes rolling closed. “Such a perfect pussy.”
His cock fills you, adding internal pressure to the strain against your clit. His hand comes down over your throat as he picks up speed, staring you right in the eye as he drills into you harder and harder until every smack stings your ass. He fucks you like he hates you and all you can do is take it, tears streaking down your cheeks. Pained little sobs blend with moans as your body is overwhelmed with conflicting tides. Meanwhile, Billy is in pure bliss. His cock stretches your pussy just enough, filling you so much you're kind of amazed you can take all of him inside.
He grabs the hand holding your panties and gives it a yank, forcing you to yelp in pain, a fresh crop of tears start falling and at the sight of it Billy moans again, keeping up his punishing rhythm. He pounds you into the bed, and after one particularly hard thrust you feel one of the support beams snap underneath you. For the first time all day, you see Billy smile. His hand goes to your panties again and you flinch, bracing for the pain.
“Want these off?”
You nod rapidly.
“Yes, sir. Please.”
“So polite, what a sweet little whore you are.”
He slips your panties off and the relief that washes over you is so immense you start to cry as he gets back to fucking you.
“Fuck,” you whimper out, unable to help yourself. The contrast is so incredible, and your clit is so sensitive that every brush against his pelvis makes your body shiver. Billy zeros in on this and asks you to touch yourself while he fucks you, your other hand still holding back your leg. All you can handle are slow swirls on your clit, but it's enough to make the shivers roaming your body constant and heavy.
Your eyes go unfocused as you get lost in the feeling of him fucking into you over and over. It feels so fucking perfect it makes you sob.
“Baby,” the word dribbles out against your will and his mouth comes down over yours. He's so good to you, helping you keep quiet because he knows you can't help it. He's so thoughtful. Your breath catches as your stomach drops and you feel yourself getting close. A nervous moan purrs onto his tongue while your pussy is slowly turning to liquid gold.
“Yeah,” he coos against your lips, “Cum on my cock, cum like a slut.”
Your pussy walls squeeze around him while your whole body thrums from the inside out, humming like a rung bell. You can't help the tears and the babbling words falling out of your shaky lips as you ride the delicious fullness of this feeling. His hand moves to the back of your neck, still roughly fucking you until his orgasm forces him out of rhythm.
“Fuck,” he pants “fuck, I love my perfect slut.”
Those words and his perfect cock are enough to set you off again, your eyes rolling back as he drills you into oblivion for the second time. He pumps thick, hot cum into you, coating you inside and then keeps going, groaning loudly. He kisses your forehead, your brain bleary. Your lower body hardly feels like it exists anymore, all you can feel is a luxurious pleasure and all you can see are his gorgeous blue eyes.
Fuck. This is all you need in life.
Finally, his hips slow to a stop and the two of you are left panting. The weight of his warm body slowly sinks onto you as he breathes onto your chest. You wrap your arms around his shoulders, holding him.
He kisses your neck.
“You okay?” he asks, his voice soft and low. You nod.
“Are you?”
His arms wrap around you.
“I needed that so much, baby.”
You push your hand into his hair, gently stroking his scalp.
“What had you so upset, lovey?”
He snuggles into you, still buried inside you as his body recovers. He groans.
“Fuck it. C’mere.”
The two of you make your way into the bathroom where he joins you in a shower. You take your time together, washing each other and taking long breaks to mingle tongues in the gathering steam. His hands are so gentle as they move across your body. So different from the way he was in bed, as a living ball of anger. You lean your head against his shoulder, trying to keep your hair dry but at the same time not caring.
Later, in warmth and the soft leftover smell of your bodies on the sheets, he pulls you into his lap. He takes your hand into his own, his fingers running along your palm as you lay against him, hearing the rhythm of his breathing.
“Why do I answer?”
You’re nearly asleep when he asks this to no one, and your eyes flutter open to find the room growing dark. You can hardly see him in the fading light. Maybe that’s what he wants. In any case, he keeps his eyes down at your hands. You know instantly what he means.
“I don’t know,” you say, “There’s probably plenty of reasons.”
You turn, touching a hand to his cheek and kissing the other one, your lips trail down to his neck where you nuzzle in, amazed, as you always are, by the warmth he collects inside himself.
“Fuckin stupid thing to do.” He whispers.
“It’s not stupid.” you say, softly, your fingers slipping up to play with the hair behind his ear. “It’s just more than he deserves. He’s your dad, so there’s supposed to be something to gain from answering his calls. But he’s a failure, so it’s just bullshit every time.” you yawn, “You’re not stupid, lovey. You’re just too generous.”
He turns, finding your mouth and enveloping it into a slow, lazy kiss as you lounge on the broken bed. His tongue is soft and salty.
“Hmm,” you hum as the kiss gives way, “I love you, too.”

Venomshank and child zombie Reader
ughhhh headache, but me and my sister are watching the season two finale of toh, it’s my fav show it’s her first time watching it, the collector is my favorite character, they’ve been my pfp on my main since king’s tide aired
Tumblr media
- Venomshank can’t recall every person he’s turned, when he goes feral he cant recall those times and if he doesn’t have his mask on it leads to him later discovering a good amount of new zombies, so when he starts finding new zombies recently he doesn’t think much of it, he does feel bad for basically killing innocent demons but he is still a deity so he doesn’t truly feed that bad
- That changes though when he finds one zombie, cowering behind something watching him, eyes scared but also not quite understanding what’s happening to them, it was you, he knelt down to you and took of his mask to try and appear less scary
- He could tell you weren’t fully turned but turned enough, some of his zombies were brainless husks but on rare occasion the bite doesn’t work correctly and leaves them half themself half zombie, so he tries to gently explain to you what happened, you got infected by something and now you’re partially a zombie, your reaction is either scared and terrified or maybe a bit excited because zombies are cool
- He tells you that he can bring you to your parents if you have any, you say you don’t so he asks if you’d like to accompany him, internally he’s trying to make up for the fact that he bit a child, not really having anywhere else to go you agree, maybe he’s also filling a bit of a hole, he does miss when Sword was a kid
- Venomshank treats you incredibly kindly and gently, he does everything he can to stop the turning so you stay at the amount you are, he can’t cure you but he can stop you from turning further, he also figures out exactly what inside you turned, what organs no longer work, he finds you no longer breath but to some degree your heart still beats, it’s odd
- He cooks you food rich in vitamins and such especially vitamin D since you can no longer go in the sun, hope you like oranges! His cooking is actually really good, if not a little strange, but not bad since he’s already raised one mortal child he knows what they eat now
- Speaking of you get all of Sword’s hand me downs, clothes and toys, his old room, he of course also gets you new things as well, most of Sword’s stuff was donated anyways, but he also gets you teething toys, the zombie part of your brain really wants to bite any and everything so having teething toys instead of gnawing of furniture is good, if you bite him he doesn’t mind he laughs about it and takes a fake snap at you, you giggle and he makes sure to never actually bite you, worried it would finish the turning process
- Sword first meets you around three weeks later, he’s gotten very curious as to why his dad’s been in the mortal world so much recently so when he stops by his home to check in with his dad he sees you hiding behind the couch, at first he’s confused till he notices your rotted skin and understands, he also takes pity on you, slowly as Sword visits more, especially to take care of you when his dad can’t, you get closer, he basically becomes an older brother to you, which he sort of is since his dad is sort of acting as a dad to you
- Venomshank feels guilty a lot, he wishes he never would have gone feral without his mask and turned you, he feels like he ruined an innocent child’s life, you’ll never grow up and you’re not fully yourself anymore, when he thinks your not looking he throws pained glances your way because he wishes he could have done something more to help you, he doesn’t regret meeting you but he wishes he never had to
- Sometimes he has to go away for days at a time, maybe two weeks if he’s unlucky, he insures you have more then enough food and such and makes you promise to be careful, you always do, even pinky swearing to top it off, sometimes Sword will take care of you but for the most part you can take care of yourself, you usually just sleep a lot, or zone out, since you turned you do that a lot, sometimes you’ll zone back in to realize you were just standing in the kitchen for 7 hours straight, you just eat like 13 oreos, have some water, and go to bed
- Speaking of bed your sleep schedule doesn’t exist, sometimes you sleep for 2 days straight, which sort of terrifies him, sometimes you sleep through the day and are up at night, other times you have a regular routine of sleeping at night, you also take a lot of naps, you have less energy as a zombie and you also get bored a lot, he plays with you and does things with you to keep you busy which you appreciate greatly because it beats sleeping all day, though sleeping is nice, so is biting, biting galore
- The other swords do not know of your existence, he fears them seeing you as too weak or a waste of time so he keeps you secret, maybe Darkheart knows of you but the others just think he’s spending more time training his mentee, when in reality he’s caring for an eternally child demon, he knows eventually he’ll have to say goodbye, in one way or another you will finally pass on, but for the time being he has you and he can care for you, protect you when he couldn’t before, it’s bittersweet but he knows he just has to cherish the time he does have with you
Tumblr media
ugh my fucking head help my headache is so bad ughhh, maybe i should put on my old glasses till i go to bed, i just need to figure out where they are, anyways hope yall enjoyed thanks for reading!

“Is it bad timing?” You ask over the phone, whine Jungkook can be heard fighting a fierce battle against his little toddler, who’s clearly currently winning.
“No- Minji-“ he starts, before he addresses you. “Not- not No towards you, you never call during a bad time, I promise, I always want to talk to yo- Minji come on now!” He sighs, little girl having escaped his lap again- refusing to bend to her father’s only wish. “I promise I want to talk to you. Minji is just..”
“Having one of those days?” You giggle, and he smiles to himself.
“I guess so.” He admits. “She wants to go out and play, but I can’t get her into her outdoor clothes.” He sighs, before he runs a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, you called because you wanted to chat and all I do is complain-“
“no, no no its fine, really.” You dismiss, truly not offended at all. “I uh.. I’ll let you battle your daughter for now. You can.. uhm, we can.. I don’t know. Talk later maybe.” You offer, and he looks at the phone a bit upset.
“I..” Well, there’s nothing there to apologize for. He’s not sorry he’s in his situation, neither is he sorry who he is or what his daughter is- it’s just an unfortunate situation you’re both in. “..yeah. let’s talk later.” He agrees, and you quietly say your goodbyes, making his heart hurt quite a bit.
Just because he’s not sorry, doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel guilty.
Minji seems to notice his shift in emotions quite quickly, quietly reaching for her outdoor pants again that he’s been trying to put on her these past twenty minutes or so- now obediently trying to put them on herself, though she does reach for his hands to get him to help her quite quickly. And even while dressing her, jungkook can’t help but think.
Will you ever be able to accompany him and his daughter out like that? Push the swing she sits on, hold her hand when he’s got his full? Maybe.
Maybe not.
All he knows is that once he’s at the playground, sitting on the bench alone again to watch the little toddler play in the sand with another prey hybrid kid, he feels as if he could be the one to throw a tantrum any second now.
Crying out, begging for the world to just let him have you.
♥━━━━━━━━━━•.♡.•━━━━━━━━━━━━♥
Minji is happily walking through the mall with her dad, holding his hand tightly as to not get lost, when suddenly, as Jungkook has stopped to look at an interesting discounted product in the shelf, he can feel her tug a little as she seems interested in something as well now. “Hm?” Jungkook wonders without taking his eyes off the value pack of baby wipes, before he looks down at his daughter, who’s staring somewhere, one hand prodding at her mouth absentmindedly. “What’re you looking at, hm?” He wonders, looking into the direction she does, when he spots it.
Or rather, you.
You’re wearing simple clothes, clearly not out to impress anyone but just to get what you need, but he can’t deny that you’re still appealing like this, even though you’re not even wearing makeup from what he can see. Your fluffy tail is slightly swaying from side to side as you put something into your shopping cart, unaware of being watched.
Jungkook is curious. It seems like you must’ve made an impression on his daughter- because she appears to recognize you, most likely by your striking features. And while she’s still clinging to him, her interest in you is obvious.
As if you can feel eyes on you, you turn a little to lock eyes with Jungkook- who waves a little, before urging Minji to do the same- but at the obvious sign of being spotted, she instead hides behind his legs, as if that would protect her from the danger of you- even though there is nothing to fear. You wave back, and Jungkook can see that you’re masking your disappointment over the little girl still clearly feeling some form of natural fear.
“Come, let’s go say hi.” Jungkook tells his daughter, who looks visibly troubled by that proposal, torn between natural fearful instincts, and her inner curiosity. Suddenly however, it seems that her decision has been made- as she makes a sound of protest, slipping around his legs to attempt to walk off, if it wasn’t for Jungkook grabbing the back of her wintercoat in the last second. But she’s eager, whining in complaint- and only now does he realize, you’ve walked off, probably thinking that would be for the best.
But not for Minji.
Remembering the dinner, Jungkook has an idea on how to maybe solve this clearly frustrating issue for his daughter- picking her up easily, to walk after you as you’re now standing in front of a large collection of different tubs of ice cream. “One might think you’re the prey trying to escape.” Jungkook jokes, and the second you look at him, clearly worried, he feels his heart jump.
Because his plan is working.
The fact that Minji is now in close contact with her father gives her an intense boost of confidence- hands reaching out for you now, curious eyes fixated on your actual face now, no longer avoiding eye contact. It makes you both a bit intimidated but also hopeful that maybe, this is a sign that with a bit more work at familiarizing yourself with her, there might be a chance.
“Hello.” You greet, careful not to move too quickly, though the little hybrid girl is clearly not that jumpy anymore, giggling happily when she notices your tail wag behind you, hitting the metal shopping cart- pointing to it to show her father, who’s smiling just as much about it. “I didn’t mean to run off- just.. Thought, I don’t know.” You stumble over your words a little, but Jungkook reassures you.
“It’s fine, really. I don’t wanna.. Stall your shopping trip either. Just.. We both wanted to just.. See you, I guess.” He says, while his daughter becomes a bit fidgety, wanting to get down again. “Minji baby if I put you down you gotta stay close though.” He gently scolds her, simply receiving a sound of protest.
You’ve noticed this as well- the fact that she pretty much doesn’t talk, whenever she’s aware that people are watching. She only ever babbles with her father, but that’s to be expected. Most prey hybrids are very withdrawn and shy, so its already surprising she appears to be very much okay with you so close already. And the second he puts her down, she’s already running off-
Though not very far, as she instead happily holds onto your tail, even laughing when you look at her with eyes wide open, completely surprised.
“I’m so sorry-” Jungkook starts, but you shake your head, smiling, and waving him off.
“No, no-” You reassure. “I’m.. Happy.” You nod, carefully looking at Minji who’s running her hands through the fur of your tail, shyly grinning up at you before she lifts your tail to hide herself, making both you and Jungkook laugh.
Maybe she’s just not that scared of predators?
But that suspicion is instantly debunked as two wolf hybrids casually walk past you both to get to pay for their things, making the little bunny hybrid instantly jump back to her father, clinging to the fabric of his pants.
So why is she alright with you?
“Would you.. Like to come over sometime?” You ask Jungkook, fidgeting with your hands a little nervously. “I.. You know. Just for some.. Casual chatting. Maybe cake? I can bake pretty well.” You rant, and Jungkook looks at Minji.
“You wanna visit Dad’s friend with him?” He asks her, and she looks at you, thinking- before she nods, reaching for something in Jungkook’s shopping basket, before she drops it in your cart- and on closer inspection, it’s a small pack of frog-themed hairclips. “Oh? You don’t want them anymore?” He wonders, but his daughter shakes her head.
“..for me?” You ask, and she nods, smiling before she runs behind her father again, curiously poking her head around his body as if to play hide and seek with you. “Well.. Not what I’d usually go for, but they might look nice. What do you think?” You ask Jungkook, who’s caught off guard for a second, having to look away a bit bashful, nodding.
“Y-yeah! I mean, anything would suit you, since you’re really pretty..” He rants, nervously licking his lips before his tongue plays with the piercings of his bottom lip, unsure how to act. This isn’t exactly what he expected- but it’s also a surprising turn of events that makes him happy.
“..thank you..” You respond, before you wave at the little girl, moving to do the same towards her father-
But Jungkook instead hugs you goodbye, unable to help himself in that moment.
♥━━━━━━━━━━•.♡.•━━━━━━━━━━━━
When you open the door to your apartment, Minji is very wary.
It’s to be expected- it's not just a new environment, but it also smells entirely of you- a predator hybrid, her natural enemy of sorts, at least in instinct. So it doesn’t shock him, and neither you, that she’s clinging to her father, stuffed animal in her arm while the other one clings to her father’s pantleg. But one look at you does seem to make her perk up- ears suddenly standing tall and turned towards you, shy smile on her lips while she grins into her dark green frog-plushy. “Hey. We’re a bit late-” Jungkook apologizes, but you just wave him off, letting them both inside with a smile.
“No bother, you texted me after all, so I was prepared.” You tell him, inviting them both into your living space that’s fairly small, but clearly yours. It’s vibrant, a bit chaotic, but overall a home, and not just a place you exist in. The little girl looks around already, most likely having her attention caught by all the decoration, pictures on the walls and colorful interior design you have. Jungkook also notices two awards hung up on the wall near the TV in the living room- and he’s reminded of your profession again, giving him an idea on how to coax his little girl out of her shell again.
“Hey, do you wanna know something cool?” Jungkook asks, squatting down in front of his daughter who looks at him, ears pointing towards him in curiosity. “Dad’s friend can draw really well. Maybe if you ask her nicely, she can show you?” He proposes, and at that, Minji looks over at you, who seems caught off guard- but you instantly walk to open a small room- an office that looks pretty chaotic, obviously the place where you work.
The shelves are full of books of all sizes and colors, but what seems to catch Minji’s attention the most, is a familiar bookcover- the same she has had for quite a while now, green frog family something she remembers very easily.
“Wait- you’re the author?” Jungkook wonders, holding one of the multiple little picture-books in his hands, the specific one Minji is looking at a new one she’s not seen before.
You nod. “I didn’t know she read that one.” You giggle. “This uh.. It's the new one that’ll be published next month. You can look at it if you like.” you tell her, well aware that she most likely can’t read it yet, but probably enjoys looking at the pictures anyways.
“Well, she doesn’t read, really..” jungkook chuckles, watching his daughter carefully stare you down while she picks up the book, something brewing in her brain with the way her ears move so distinctively. “she mostly looks at the pictures, and makes up her own story.” He explains.
“it trains her creativity.” You tell him, as you walk out the room with her hot on your heels, eyes still burning Luke little lasers on the back of your head. “which is important, you know? Many parents.. just leave their kids with the TV or something and call it a day.” You sigh, closing the door behind you before you watch Minji jump on your couch, eager to look at the little book.
“minji, don’t jump like that!” Jungkook scolds, and you can’t help but smile to yourself at the almost challenging glimmer in his daughter’s eyes, as if she’s quietly sending a message- one that’s so obvious, even you receive the signal clear as day.
“But Dad does it!” she suddenly chirps at you. “All’the time!” she mumbles into the backrest of the couch. Jungkook gasps at both the sheer audacity of his daughter airing out his bad habits like this- and the fact that she actually spoke directly towards you.
“Well, I’d love for you both to feel right at home.” You say gently. “So I don’t mind if you jump a little, bunny.” You tell her- and at the nickname she grows shy, hiding away to instead bury her head into her book.
Jungkook smiles at the interaction, and follows you into your kitchen to make some tea, enjoying the moment with you to its fullest. “…I really don’t jump around like that, by the way.” He suddenly tells you with such a serious tone that you can’t help but laugh at him. “Hey, I’m serious!”
“serious? Maybe, but not honest!” You giggle, making him smile as well, unable to really do anything else but. This whole situation feels like a dream really, with you at his side and his daughter warming up to you. He’s sure there will be hurdles, it won’t be a smooth ride just because right now things are looking up- but he also has found a new unique feeling.
A feeling that this might actually work.

Back home, Jungkook has busied his daughter with her coloring book and favorite crayons, while he himself prepares some dinner in the kitchen. And all is calm and well, until his daughter calls out to him from her room, a whine in her tone signaling that she needs his help urgently.
“What’s up?” He wonders towards her, before she holds out two crayons she’s never used- one red, and one orange. “What’s with them?” He asks, while she pouts to herself, thinking seriously about something.
“which is dad’s friend?” she asks, and Jungkook laughs.
“I don’t know? Maybe both of them, hm?” He wonders, and she nods- suddenly determined as she runs back to her coloring book, occupying herself again while he smiles and shakes his head, directing his attention back to the pan on the stove.
It’s only later, when he cleans up the table and finishes putting away the dishes, that she stands in front of him again, this time with a neatly ripped out page of her coloring book. “Wanna put that on the fridge?” He asks, and his daughter nods.

You had known Steve for as long as you could remember. In all of your earliest childhood memories, he was always there. From playing pirates in the castle garden to pouring over the many different books in the vast, large library, it seemed like almost every memory of your childhood had Steve attached to it in one way or another.
Your favorite memory had to be when you were thirteen, and he was fourteen. Both your fathers had pulled you aside to have an “important discussion.” Really, it was only to tell you that when you both got older, Steve would be assigned as your personal guard, hired to follow you around and protect you should worse come to worse. You both understood it as getting more time to spend with your best friend.
Steve had begun training with his father, the Captain of the Guard, shortly after, and by the time you were sixteen and he was seventeen, he became your personal guard, following you around the castle as he usually did, except now with the purpose of protecting you. From what, you weren’t sure, the biggest threat you’ve ever really faced was tripping over one of your gowns, but nonetheless, you were happy to have your best friend by your side.
“Do you ever get bored of always following me around,” you had asked him one day as he accompanied you to the Royal Court where your father had been waiting for you to begin a meeting.
Steve only scoffed. “Do I ever get bored of getting to hang out with my best friend, let me think about that for a second,” he paused, truly letting himself process the question before shooting you a charming smile. “No, I don’t get sick of hanging out with my best friend, but thank you for the concern.”
Truthfully, Steve could never get bored of hanging out with you. Even if it was only to follow you around as you did the most mundane things like get a glass of water or sign off on a new treaty. As long as he was with you, he couldn’t help but have the best time. There was truly no other place he’d rather be, than in the company of the girl he’d known since childhood, the girl who’d seen him through his best and his worst, the girl he’d slowly started to fall for.
“I’m just saying,” you replied with a smile, “you could be out training the new guards, or going out on actual missions and patrols instead of following me around.”
He couldn’t help but smile back. “I assure you, princess, I quite enjoy my time spent with you,” he whispered as he opened the door leading to the Royal Court. He followed you as you made your way through the  corridor, “besides, I do help train the new guards, I’m supposed to be the next Captain of the Guard when my dad retires, remember?”
You shook your head with a smile, “I know, I know,” you started with a laugh, “but there’s so much more to all these walls, you should get to experience it all.”
Steve only leaned closer to you, softly whispering “so should you,” before a voice clearing their throat interrupted the two of you. You both glanced your heads to the side, towards the mysterious voice, only to be met with your father, the king.
Steve quickly moved away from you before sending a quick bow towards you and your father, giving your arm a small, quick squeeze of good luck before making his way back out the hallway, waiting to escort you to wherever you chose once the meeting was over. It wasn’t very formal of him, squeezing your arm like he did, but the two of you had abandoned formalities with one another long ago, one of the many consequences of being best friends with someone for so long.
Your father cleared his throat again, signaling for your attention.
“So,” he began when you finally looked his way, “you will be turning eighteen soon, do you know what that means?”
There were a lot of things that turning eighteen meant in the royal castle. More responsibilities, more paperwork, more homework, more time learning how to be queen and run the Kingdom of Hawkins.
Your father quickly interrupted your train of thought. “It means, we need to begin finding you a suitable suitor,” he tells you.
Oh, that’s right. Most days, you liked to pretend that being forced into an arranged marriage wasn’t part of the deal that came with being a princess. That you could go off and marry whoever you liked, no matter who they were, no matter their ranking or the amount of power they had. That, in another life, you could maybe even be married to someone like Steve.
“Do I really need to marry some prince I’ve never met before?” You asked your father with a sigh. He only shook his head no.
“No, my child,” he replied with a laugh. “There will be a ball for you to meet all the suitable princes and you can make your pick there. That is how I met your mother, you know,” he added with a wink.
You could only force a smile onto your face at his words. Truthfully, there was nothing you would rather do less than be forced to host a ball as you talked, danced, and met a handful of princes you’d never seen in your life before. But it was part of your responsibility as a princess, no matter how much you hated that part of your title.
***
You had told Steve to pick you up an hour after the meeting so he could walk you back to your quarters. And an hour later, there he was, pacing back and forth outside the door leading to the Royal Court as he waited for your meeting to be over as you finally made your way out.
He greeted you with a smile that quickly turned into a frown as he saw your upset features. Your too-tight smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes, your fidgeting hands. “What’s wrong?” He asked as you sighed.
You shake your head with that still-too-tight smile. “Nothing,” you say with a shrug, beginning the walk back to your room with Steve by your side. “Just a boring meeting is all.”
Steve’s frown only deepens at that. “While that doesn’t surprise me, you don’t look bored. You look more… sad if anything.”
You sigh, relenting. After knowing someone for practically your whole life, it’s hard to not notice every little thing about them, you suppose, such as when they were upset. “They want me to start picking a suitor,” you tell him softly, eyes trained on the floor.
“Oh,” he whispered out.
That causes the smallest smile to crack through your features. “Oh,” you repeat, glancing up to look at your friend through a sad smile.
Steve isn’t sure of what to say to that. Deep down, he always knew that he would never get a real chance with you. He was a knight, and you were the crowned princess. It just wasn’t plausible. You were destined to marry some rich, douchebag prince as he stood on the sidelines, wishing nothing more than for the man you were marrying to be him.
“Maybe you’ll find someone nice,” he offers solemnly.
You can't help but glare at him. “Maybe I’ll find someone who tries to steal the throne from me,” you retort with a sigh.
“You deserve better, you know,” he quietly replies.
You only frown. “I think so too,” you admit just as quietly, “but I don’t have much of a choice, now do I?”
“So you want to marry a man who doesn’t love you?” He questions. Not angry, not accusatory, not even hurt. Just confused.
“Of course I don’t want that,” you reply with yet another glare. “But not all of us are lucky enough to marry for love, Steve.”
Steve knows that feeling all too well, because, at the end of the day, he knows he’ll never get to marry the girl he truly loves with all his heart and all his being. She wasn’t meant for him, it was never written in the stars for him, for them.
“You deserve to be loved, princess” is all he can reply.
You only smile at his words. “Thank you for being so passionate about my love life, Steve.”
He smiles back easily, an almost boyish smile. “It’s my job to worry about you. Your well-being, your safety, your love life, etcetera, etcetera,” he claims with an exaggerated wave of his arms.
You can only laugh at his words as you quickly take his hand in yours, leaving no time for any objections or questions as pull him to the palace garden.
***
When you were six and Steve was seven, he had asked you to marry him. The two of you had been feeding the geese in the garden lake together when the idea had first struck him.
“Let’s get married!” A seven-year-old Steve exclaimed a little too loudly, causing some of the geese to jump back from startlement.
“What?!” You exclaimed back with a giggle before Steve nodded his head in enthusiasm.
“I know you’re supposed to get married when you love someone,” he explained with a wide grin, “and I love you, so let’s get married!”
And in your mind, nothing made more sense than to marry your best friend whom you loved. And so, you nodded along to his request with a grin so wide, it practically mirrored his.
“Okay!” You exclaimed, taking his hand in yours, geese long forgotten about, “I love you, let’s get married!”
The two of you invited your other friends who lived in the castle along with you: Robin Buckley, Nancy Wheeler, and Jonathan Byers, all the children of different maids in the castle, as well as Eddie Munson, the nephew of a butler who came to visit you and your friends frequently. Nancy had officiated the wedding later that day at the very same spot Steve had proposed the idea, and when the time came, you kissed Steve’s cheek, giggling at the shade of pink his face quickly turned into.
You still had the blade of grass Jonathan had crafted into a ring for the both of you sitting on your vanity.
***
The two of you were sitting in front of the lake in the palace garden, feeding the geese and ducks that lived there. Your dress would likely get stained from the grass later, but you couldn’t really find it within yourself to care. Not when the sounds of the trees rustling and the birds chirping brought nothing but peace to you.
Despite himself, Steve couldn’t help but to stare at you as you lay the animal’s grains of food down on the grass a few feet away from you. He couldn’t help but smile as the ducks and geese all waddled up to you, all so trusting of you, of your gentleness. The sun was shining down on you now, and Steve couldn’t help but wonder how you could be real. How someone so kind and sweet and gorgeous and angelic could exist.
“Our anniversary is coming up soon,” Steve quietly announces, breaking the tranquil sound of silence that had previously filled the garden. It wasn’t a real anniversary to celebrate your love for one another, though Steve wishes it was. Instead, it was the anniversary of when the two of you had gotten “married” as kids. When he wanted nothing more than to marry his best friend, and he still did want that.
You didn’t seem to mind his interruption, though, instead only plucking a daisy off the grass and handing it to him with a smile. “Happy anniversary,” you reply as he takes the daisy with a laugh.
Steve looks down at the flower with a smile, twirling it along his pinched thumb and index finger. “Happy anniversary, princess,” he repeats, tucking the daisy in between your hair and the top of your ear, his fingers gently trailing along your jaw before dropping his hand. His touch always lingering a little longer than it probably should. A little too longer than is probably deemed appropriate.  Because as much as Steve wished he could live a life with you, he knew in the end it could never happen. A knight and a princess could never be together, but he couldn’t help but get as many stolen moments as he could. Because he’d rather have you like this, his best friend who he could never be with, but always have a few stolen glances, stolen moments with, than to not have you in his life at all. That would be true torture.
Steve sighed as he glanced around the garden, looking for any potential dangers to clear his head. He was supposed to always be on guard, always on high alert, but when his gaze fell on you once again, he couldn’t help but soften the slightest bit. It was as if you had some magical power over him, and he couldn’t find it within himself to mind.
“You know, you don’t always have to be so stiff and stoic. Nothing’s going to happen in the garden,” you softly tell him as you pluck a blade of grass off the ground.
Steve only smiles. “My job is to protect you, you know. Getting to hang out with you is only a perk of the job.”
You smile at his words, the smallest flutter of something, you’re not sure what, hitting your stomach.
“You can protect me and have fun with me,” you reply as you toss the piece of grass towards him, though the wind quickly drifts it away from the two of you as it gently falls onto one of the geese.
“I’m always having fun with you, princess,” Steve teases, reaching a hand up to gently tug on a piece of your hair as you gaze at the animals in front of you.
You only roll your eyes at his actions, swatting his hand away as you mockingly stick your tongue out at him.
Steve feigns a gasp, saying your name as if you’ve committed treason against the royal family. “That is very un-lady like of you,” he scolds, fighting the smile that threatens to creep up his face.
Your only response is to splash some water from the lake onto him, causing a laugh to escape the knight and some of the birds to retreat to a different part of the garden.
“My hair!” Steve exclaims, hands reaching up to the top of his head as if you had just shaved it off him.
“And they call me dramatic,” you say through a laugh. Steve only huffs, pretending to look unamused, but clearly failing.
“You’re lucky my job is to protect you,” he mumbles through feigned annoyance.
You shrug with a smile, “aw, I love you too, my dear husband,” you reply with a laugh.
Steve knows you only mean that word, husband, due to your childhood “marriage,” but for a second, just a second, he lets himself envision what a life with you would be like. A marriage with you, a happily ever after with you. He can't help but dream of a life he knows he’ll never be able to have. A life with you, the two of you in love, happy, in each other’s arms, waking up next to each other every morning, you falling asleep in his arms every night. He wishes more than anything that he could have that with you.
Maybe in another life, in a life where you weren’t a princess, and he wasn’t a knight. A life where you lived in a small town, where you were getting an education as he worked a different job.
All he could do was dream.
He sighed with a roll of his eyes and the hint of a smile tugging his face at the thought of being married to you. What a life he would get to live. “Yes, yes, I do love you, my wretched wife.”
The hidden smile finally graces his lips as you gasp in feigned hurt and horror at ever being called the word “wretched.”

it’s that time of the year again; peak hotness accompanies the sixth month of the year, as everyone dress up and come together for the awaited holiday: midsummer.
you are accompanying rafe; as you always do for this holiday, your arm looped into his as you both walk out along with the rest of the camerons. both of you are adorned in matching shades of baby blue, and you have a little flower crown fixed on the top of your head. rafe passes you a small smile as he leads you along with his family, everyone around you all clapping and cheering for the most powerful family on the island.
the celebrations continue to happen around you, and in between you and rafe get separated; him going with his friends for some ‘business’ (you caught the air that he got JJ kicked out), and you with your friends just simply talking and chatting, sipping away on your mocktail.
amidst your conversation with your friends, you feel an all too familiar hand brush your side, slowly trailing under the slit of your dress to gently graze your bare thigh. you feel him breathing down on your neck, and for a second, just for a second, you feel yourself completely lifted away from the conversation with your friends – but you quickly ground yourself back.
“hey,” he says softly into your ear. the conversation between your friends doesn’t essentially stop; this isn’t a rare sight for them.
“hey,” you murmur, rafe’s arms now wrapping firmly around your waist from behind, his chin resting on the crook of your neck.
“come with me,” he says softly, pressing the most subtle kiss behind your ear. his tone isn’t a request and it’s also not a command; but you know there is absolutely no room for argument. you give him a nod of your head and excuse yourself from your friends and follow him out, him making sure no one, especially his dad catch you both leaving.
he leads you to the nearby beach which is almost completely empty as everyone is gathered for midsummer, where you both sit down next to each other on the sand, the waves lapping up till your feet under the darkness of the night sky.
a breeze blows past you two as you both sit silently next to each other on the beach, the sound of the waves filling your ears. you hear the flick of a lighter and turn your head to rafe to see him lighting up a weed joint, watching the momentary golden glow. he hands you the joint after taking a hit himself, and you take a deep drag, blowing out a plume of smoke after that.
“I fuckin’ hate midsummers,” rafe mutters, as you pass him the joint and he takes a hit. “all that attention to my dad, everyone is always asking me when i’m going to start at the company… same bullshit each time. I’m so sick of it.” he takes another hit of the joint, letting out a cloud of smoke before turning his attention to you. “but this…” he says, his voice now starting to take on a softer tone as his fingers curl around yours, “this is the only good thing each time.”
you smile softly at him, squeezing his hand back as he hands you the joint back and you take a hit. he watches you intently; watches how your lips wrap around the end of the joint, how you take a deep drag, and how you let the smoke roll off your tongue releasing it into the air. he takes your intertwined hand and presses a soft kiss to the back of your knuckles.
“thank you for coming with me, seriously,” he murmurs, pressing another kiss to the back of your hand before letting it go.
“of course,” you smile, handing him the joint back. “there’s nothing you have to thank me for,”
rafe acknowledges your smile with one of his own before hitting the joint. a beat of silence passes over you two before rafe speaks up again.
“I love how we do this each time,” he says with a smile, the joint dangling in between his lips, “this sneaking away from everyone. right now, my dad must be giving some lame ass speech using words like ‘power’ and ‘integrity’, and will smother all his love on ms. sarah there, and everyone would practically be eating out of his hand.” he snorts, shaking his head. “it’s nice to get away from that suffocating place to get a breather. you’re the only one who understands.”
you scoot closer to him and rest your head on his shoulder, and his hand comes to rest on your thigh right under the slit, where he gently traces small circles against your flesh, his touch almost featherlight.
“you remember when we sneaked out from the celebration the first time?” you start. “we were, what, 8? and your dad was so desperate to make you meet all his business associates but your little antisocial ass was just not having it,”
he lets out a chuckle at your words, nodding. he pulls the joint from his lips and slots it in between yours. “I had more than enough of business talk that night. and you were the only one who caught the look of uncomfort on my face. you helped me sneak out from there and we came right to this beach, and we shared a pack of sour patch kids.”
you laugh softly at the memory, letting out some smoke before holding the joint between your fingers. “yeah,” you say. “and it just became a tradition over the years. we used to share candy, and now we’re sharing a weed joint. we really leveled up our game huh?”
rafe chuckles with you, both of your laughters mixing together in a symphony just like they always have all these years. “we certainly did,” he says. “I’m proud of us you know?” he teases, his fingers continuing to trace circles on your thigh.
“I am too,” you grin, taking a hit of the joint again.
“but my favorite one was when we were 18,” he says. “when we went skinny dipping in the water,”
you laugh at that, nodding. “that was… that was really something huh?” you murmur, getting comfortable against his shoulder.
“mhm,” he hums softly, looking at your head resting on his shoulder, and leaning down to kiss your temple softly. “it was really good,” he murmurs.
you look up at him, your eyes flicking down to his lips for just a second before going back up to his eyes. “you know…” you start speaking, and you can feel the subtle start of the influence of the thc over your thoughts, “i wouldn’t mind doing that again,” you whisper.
rafe looks down at you and catches your subtle glance at his lips. “you wouldn’t?” he whispers back, a smirk starting to slowly pull his lips.
a coy smile spreads on your face and you shake your head. “I wouldn’t, no,” you murmur.
the small smirk on his face turns to a full grin as his fingers reach out to your shoulder, trailing over the strap of your dress. he starts to slowly tug it down, the strap now hanging off your shoulder. rafe feels his heart starting to thump in his chest, and he knows, oh he just knows what the night has in store for you two.
“well then…” he mumbles, leaning down to press the softest kiss on your exposed shoulder.
“... what are we waiting for?”

For the ship ask game!
48. …out of habit + a bob of your choice!
This prompt screams secret relationship, and what better Bob to do that with than Cobalt Eyes & Sweet Smiles Bob?
Tumblr media
Bob knew he shouldn't be jealous. You weren't paying Jake any attention as he bragged about the latest air maneuver he mastered. Your eyes were focused on putting together a burger.
Soon enough, one of your fathers' old Top Gun classmates would whisk you away, no doubt to marvel at how much you had grown up, reminiscing on how you used to toddle around at this yearly cookout.
The worst part was Bob couldn't even be mad at Jake. Because he told Jake that all that happened after you two met was that he walked you to your car.
Which was partly true. Bob did walk you to your car. And then exchanged numbers after making out in said car. Which led to going on a date, which led to Bob secretly dating you.
Turns out, dating the daughter of your bosses is complicated.
Once the current mission was over, it would be easier to come forward. And decidedly less weird to think about.
Though Bob was still worried that once the secret was out in the open, he'd wake up the next day to find he's been deployed to Australia.
So all Bob could do was sip on his diet Coke as he tried not watch Jake fail at hitting on his girlfriend.
"I'm going to go...." Your eyes lingered on Bob. God, he looked so good in that blue shirt, it was unfair. But wouldn't that be too obvious?
"Somewhere that isn't here," you finished, walking away before Jake could even speak. The temptation to tell the blonde pilot you were dating Bob grew stronger everyday.
But Jake also had a big mouth and seemed like the kind of dick to mention something to one of your dads, if not both.
Technically, you weren't breaking their rule. They said no pilots and Bob wasn't a pilot. He was a WSO.
But it certainly made things awkward as Bob was working with Dad. And Pa was his boss.
Well, wanting to get away from Jake Seresin wouldn't raise anyone's suspicions.
Bob tried to hide his excitement when you stood next to him. He tried to act casual, but nothing could hide that smile of his.
Not that you mind. In fact, his sweet expression sent warmth throughout your body.
"Got tired of hearing how much better he is than everyone else?" Bob joked, causing you to nearly choke on your burger.
"The best don't brag, they let their work speak for themselves," you explained, a sly smile on your face. It was so hard not to make eye contact with him. Truly unfair how he had eyes bluer than the ocean, deeper than the sky-
"Is it too much if I asked you to accompany me to the Hot Dog station? Figured it would be nice to have someone who understands all the toppings." With that lopsided smile, how could you say no?
"It is an intimidating amount of choices," you chuckled as you led him over to the station.
"Alright, so I know it sounds weird, but the Olivier-Russian potato salad- that Pa makes is actually pretty good. The chili Slider makes is good, but unless you have a stomach of steel only take a little. Oh, and Hollywood says the candied jalapeños are mostly sweet but that's a lie. It's mostly spicy."
Bob couldn't help but be memorized as you rattled off facts about the various condiments. Whether it was about work, a personal belief, or yes, even hot dog toppings, you always spoke with such passion.
He loved it. He loved you, but that conversation is still a few steps away.
For now, Bob was happy to settle for counting down the days until he could hold your hand in a gathering like today's. Even if it terrified him.
Yes, technically, he wasn't a pilot. But considering who your dads were, a technicality didn't bring Bob much hope.
According to Bradley, the idea of you dating someone in the military, much less a naval pilot, had been vocally met with disdain.
But today Bob wouldn't focus on that. Instead, he focused on your bright smile and how cute you looked in that sundress.
"What's your go-to?" He asked, ready to take the valuable information to heart.
"Chili with some of the candied jalapenos and a dash of ketchup."
"No mustard?" He asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
You had to stifle a laugh, "No mustard."
"Alright, I trust ya." His words, laced with a slight twang sent warmth throughout your body.
Without saying a word, you took the ladle from the chili bowl, serving it onto his hot dog. You gave him a sweet smile as an explanation, one that Bob took happily.
"Thanks darlin'," He leaned in to peck your lips, neither of you thinking about it.
It wasn't until he broke away to grab the ketchup that you both froze, realization washing over you.
Fuck.
"I'm gonna, um, go." You said quickly, grabbing your plate.
"Uh yeah, good idea," Bob quickly put down the ketchup, turning around to walk away from you. His face was bright red as he practically ran back to Mickey and Natasha who were currently chatting up with some of Pete and Tom's old classmates.
You looked around, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. No one standing in shock.
Alright, good. That was a good sign.
"Hey, did you see that?" You asked Bradley, who had been roped into grill duty.
"See what?" Your pseudo-brother shrugged, his eyes remaining on the grill, unaware that you were on the verge of having a panic attack.
"Bob and I kissed. It was an accident, like neither of us thought about it! It just felt natural and we forgot where we were!" You hissed.
Bradley was the only one who knew. The first time Bob spent the night at your place, the universe decided that Bradley should be the one to pick you up for family brunch. In hindsight, better he than one of your dads. Thankfully, you had enough dirt on Bradley to buy his silence.
"Oh," Bradley shrugged, as if it was nothing. Truthfully, he didn't know why you two insisted on keeping it a secret. It wasn't like you were dating Hangman (thank fucking God for that).
"I didn't notice anything," He said, which accurately reassured you.
"Although...." His words made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
"Although?" You gritted through your teeth.
"I mean, that would explain why Slider was running into the house. I thought he just had to piss."
God. Dammit.
"You good Bob?" Mickey asked upon seeing his fellow WSO, beet-faced and nervous.
"Huh? Oh! Me? Yeah, I'm great. Swell actually!" Bob said, unconvincingly.
Natasha knew Bob was dating you. It was obvious when you showed up to one of the beach football games. How anyone else failed to notice was beyond Nat.
But she knew not to say anything. Instead, she gave Bob a raised eyebrow. Whatever it was (concerning you), she knew it was better to ask in private.
"Lieutenant Floyd? May I speak with you in private?"
Bob's blood ran cold as he turned to face Captain Mitchell, who had his arms crossed.
"Um, I..." He could pretend to pass out. There was no current or former medic here. So he would just need to play dead as if his life depended on it, because it did. Claim it was from the heat. Yeah. Blame the sun, he was pale enough to do so.
But his knees were locked. Bob couldn't run, couldn't pretend to pass out. Fuck, it was too early to fake food poisoning.
So instead, all he could muster up was a weak nod as his legs carried him inside the Mitchell-Kazansky house.
He was fucked. Utterly fucked. He should just leave now so he can go pack up for Australia. Would he even get that far? He had been sneaking around with their daughter, death was probably the only option.
Even if your dads didn't kill him, your honorary uncles will. Fuck, was his will updated? Would you even get anything? Well, Bob did tell Bradley to give you the ring in his drawer should anything happen to him. It was his grandma's, given to him so he had a ring to propose and-
Why was the Admiral whose callsign was literally "Iceman" hugging him?
"Thank God it's you. We thought she was seeing Seresin."
Oh.
That explains a lot.
"Um, no offense sir, but you raised your daughter to have better standards than Seresin," Bob barely got out, now receiving a hug from the much shorter Captain.
"We knew she was seeing someone. We're all glad it's you."
When you ran into your childhood home, you were expecting many things. Mainly Bob's head on the floor.
Receiving hugs from your dads was not on the list, but man was it a welcoming sight.
Bradley shrugged, "I don't know why you were so worried about them knowing."
You rolled your eyes, "The same reason why you haven't told them you have a fiancé."
Wait shit, that was not supposed to be said out loud.
"You have a what?"

On most nights Halloween is about candy, dressing up, bobbing for apples and mostly everything and everyone being spooky this year around. Castiel had celebrated Halloween with you and the brothers: meaning doing the normal line of business of picking up a case on this very night, and trying to stop whatever is terrorizing the town so people could get to live an everyday life You were always fond of the idea of Halloween since you were younger, either that meaning going all out for your costume or getting the best pieces of candy from neighborhood to neighborhood. But every sense you were 9 Halloween was never the same, you had dressed up as a pirate this year, while your dad was there to accompany you on your ‘supply run’ he'd call it.
The night played out as your typical trick or treat ‘act’ to each and every door that was available this time of night. It was the last door at the end of the dimly lit neighborhood when things slowly started to become unusual. As soon as you had rang the doorbell a man immediately opened the door, greeting you and your dad with a bowl of candy and a warm smile on his face.
He had reached in the middle of his candy bowl before his eyes met with your dad as he held this mysterious candy out to him.
Your dad had taken it out of curiosity as this was the first time this night, someone had offered him candy. The man then had given you the normal candy brands as you both exchanged smiles, but as you turned to leave you could've sworn your fathers eyes had  turned  black. When you got home your father ate the candy to which he immediately started saying random gibberish under his breath as he walked into the kitchen, and with a blink of an eye his eyes turned pitch black.
You ran upstairs to your room locking the door behind you, as you heard your mother enter the kitchen followed by screams of terror. You slowly crept your way down stairs once the noise ceased to be met with your mother and fathers body’s on the ground mutilated, and that your father had killed himself with the same knife.
Now, Halloween is a constant reminder of why you're in this line of work, alongside the Winchester brothers and a boyfriend of an angel in a trench coat.
Tumblr media
It was 9pm as you sat on the couch all curled up in soft and warm blankets, patiently waiting for Castiel to come home. For once this year Halloween was just a typical Thursday as you didn't quite like to celebrate it when you got older. Castiel had been ‘upstairs’ taking care of a rather stressful meeting that had gone all throughout the day.
You bit the inside of your cheek as you thought of a way to cheer up castiel from his long, long evening, when you finally landed on one idea. Since it was also Halloween you couldn't help adding the dressing up aspect to the night. You thought back to when you walked into the living room where the boys were finding clues on a case as u turned to the tv seeing Castiel watching porn. You had spat out of some of your beer as you slowly walked over to turn off the tv so you could spare your eyes from further jumpscares. But of course Castiel being new to the human realm didn't quite understand what was happening.
Even after you turned off the tv Castiel looked up at you, his eyebrows scrunching up in bewilderment trying to process this…motion. “If the pizza man truly loves the babysitter, why does he keep slapping her rear?” He questioned, a flicker of curiosity sparked through his eyes.
You lightly patted his shoulder, beer in hand, walking away whispering “ I don't know Cas…I don't know….”
Weeks after this interaction and in a relationship with Castiel the topic later resurfaced and Cas asked you about the babysitter and the pizza man once again. You had to figure out how to explain it to him…and let's just say it wasn't an explanation….. It was a demonstration.
Tumblr media
As you rummaged through your drawer, you pulled out the delicate black lace lingerie a playful idea forming in your mind to surprise Castiel and hopefully bring a little lightness to his otherwise long, stressful evening. You placed the piece of lingerie along the bed and, before you could even fully exit your shared room, you suddenly felt a cold breeze rush past you.
Castiel stood in the dimly lit kitchen, setting down some grub on the counter, his usual calm presence made you pause, before making your way towards him. You wrapped your arms around his torso while placing gentle kisses along his back. Castiel sighed into a smile before turning around to face you. “Thought you’d might be hungry” He exclaimed
A bright smile lit up your face “You know me too well”, Castiel couldn't help but notice a small mischievous glint in your eyes as you went up to kiss his face.
“Thinking about something?” Cas asked while parting. You slowly kissed his jaw up and down, ending just near his cheek. “No, Cassie…just enjoying the moment” you whisper, and slightly bite onto the shell of his ear, earning a subtle shiver from Cas. You laughed softly and pulled away to give him one final peck on the lips before walking over to the counter to serve your food. You sat yourself down on a bar stool and watched as Cas slowly made his way over to you, wrapping his arms around your waist while gently kissing up your neck. “Rough day?” you asked him, “Not anymore, now that i'm with you” he replied muffled. You feel him smile against your neck making you look back and press a soft kiss onto his hair. There was a knock on the front door that made you jolt from your seat and you left cas for a second wondering who could be knocking at this time of night.
You opened the door to find Dean wearing a Dr. Sexy costume while Sam was in nurse scrubs. You eyed them up and down to then giving them a quick side eye “Since when did you guys celebrate halloween?” you questioned. “Since forever! Hey, where's your guy’s costume??” Asked Dean. “Oh, we don't do that,” you replied. You then looked up at the skyscraper next to Dean giving you a small pout. “He forced me” mumbled Sam, “Hey, you and Cas should dress up as the pizza man and babysitter” Dean joked while flashing his eyebrows. You considered the thought for a moment before saying “Y’know what, that's the first smart thing you've said all night Dean!” “Any time sweetheart”. You invited the boys in the living room where Castiel had moved to. He looked up to see the brothers and stood up to welcome them. “Oh yeah by the way Cas, were going out tonight for Halloween!” you exclaimed. “Really?” he questioned “Are you sure you're okay to go out?” A hint of concern laced his tone. “Yeah! And you're gonna be the pizza man, Cas!” beamed Dean. Castiel faced Dean, his eyebrows scrunching in confusion. “Why, is this a reference I should know of…?” he uttered. You walked away to change, sighing “You’ll see Cas..”, You closed the door behind you as your eyes fixated on the set of lingerie.
You grabbed a pair of flared jeans and a tight fitting shirt that you pulled on top of lingerie that resembled almost exactly how the babysitter wore. Pairing the outfit with the best smelling perfume you owned, before heading back down stairs.
You were greeted with the sight of Castiel in a Black polo, with khaki pants, and a dominoes hat that Sam just so happened to have, after a hunt a few months back. While you were used to Cas having his trench coat on 24/7 you never really paid much attention to how muscular he really was, until this moment. The shirt constricted against his broad chest, making your jaw drop, you eyed him in a way that made him slightly freeze in his path. After a few seconds Castiel couldn't quite put his finger on it, but your ‘costume’ was starting to become familiar, as the seconds ticked by. “So where are we going anyway?” You questioned as everybody was getting ready to leave, “To a bar of course” Dean responded. “Right, I should've guessed” You replied in a sarcastic tone, you paused for a second and looked up at Castiel feeling like you forgot something.”-WAIT CAS, WHAT ABOUT THAT PRECIOUS FOOD YOU BOUGHT ME?” you said with urgency while speed walking towards the kitchen, Castiel stopped you in your tracks before lifting his hand up, and with a snap of his finger’s the food was neatly tucked into the fridge, for tomorrow's leftovers. “Already taken care of” He smiled, “Alright, everybody ready to hit the road?” interrupted Dean, “Yep” responded everybody. You guys made your way over to the impala while the temperature was slightly cold making you subtly shiver. Castiel took notice and wrapped his arm around your shoulder, providing some sort of warmth.
After several minutes of driving you finally arrived at the bar that Dean had chosen for the night. Cas helped you out of the car putting his hands on your waist and helping you to your feet. You smile at his gesture and decide to give him a hint towards your costume. Standing on your tippy toes you quietly moaned into his ear and walked away giving him a teasing smirk, making your way to the bartender for a drink. Castiel just stands at the entrance of the bar trying to understand what you just did, a light tint of blush warms his face as he awkwardly walks inside. It took three shots for it to finally click in Castiel's head what the two of you were matching, and once it did, the realization hit him like a freight train—his eyes widening in surprise as the hints settled in. You knew at that moment you had an angel in heat for you.
Out of nowhere, you were back in the shared room with Castiel, the door snapping shut behind him, his eyes wandering all over your body. “It finally clicked, huh?” you questioned, your lips curled into a playful smile. With no hesitation Castiel’s lips latch onto yours taking you in by surprise. He started to walk backwards making you follow towards him. He then gently placed you down onto the bed still maintaining the kiss, you let go as air began to become scarce. Castiel slowly kissed down your neck murmuring how much he adored you. He then got to the line of your shirt, with swift hands he pulled your shirt over your head to reveal the first half of lingerie beneath you. His heart beats faster as he takes off your jeans, this time fully leaving you in the black laced lingerie you bought just for this moment. (and ofc for many more) Castiel goes straight for your jaw placing gentle kisses to your neck to then leaving love bites..well in this case angel bites. The next steps felt rushed, you vaguely remember, but you were out of the lingerie looking up at Castiel, really taking in his body features, He too already took most of his costume off just left in his pants. He looked down at you in amazement, eyes widening, lips slightly parted as he tucked a loose strand behind your ear. His eyes pleading for permission, you quickly nodded as he then gently cupped your left boob leaning in to leave hot trials of kisses and licks all around before going for the nip. He positioned his lips over your nipple and  began to suck slightly, causing a moan to escape your lips. You heard him grunt at the sounds escaping your lips, he continued to lick and suck your left boob, until finally he decided to do the other side. He was more certain this time, making sure to do it how you liked. As a cacophony of moans and slightly coherent words escaped your lips. He left little purple and red marks anywhere his mouth touched, but you weren’t complaining.
Castiel moves to your cunt, caressing your folds, it sends sparks flying through your body as he inserts a finger. You arch your back slightly as you adjust to his thick digit, he looks into your eyes giving you a concerned look wondering if he's causing you any pain. You managed to pant out that you were fine and before you knew it he was thrusting his finger in out of you. Your walls clamp down on Castiel's fingers; he adds a second one in curling them both. You moaned into oblivion, the knot in your stomach turning for pleasure, but before you could get your sweet release his fingers shot out of you leaving you panting for a second as Castiel tries something new.
His head was buried between your legs, lips sucking aggressively on your clit. Your hands instinctively went for his hair, tugging him closer making him groan against your skin. You threw your head back, eyes rolling to the back of your head, Castiel eased his tongue into your cunt, swirling slowly. This time the knot in your stomach released, fully making your back arch as far it could go while you moaned out Castiel's name. After a few seconds of panting, you propped yourself on your elbows, grabbing the sheet and mouth opened. This brain numbing move he pulled on you half shocked you while the other half left you wanted more. Castiel licked his lips clean, savoring every drop of you in his mouth. He laughs softly at your reaction, “I learned that from the pizza man” he exclaims, “I bet” you scoff. Your knees gave a slight wobble as you repositioned yourself on your knees, you dipped your head to his pants and with fast hands you lowered Castiel  pants and boxers enough to reveal his cock. Which practically sprang out in front of your face, Castiel was basically towering over you as his dick twitched in delight. You smiled into a soft laugh before leaving wet kisses and licks at the base of his cock, Cas gently let his head fall forward while closing his eyes, hands slowly gliding up your hair as you fully put his dick inside your mouth. He whines in pleasure slightly grinding his cock into you but still letting you do most of the work. You began bobbing your head in out earning an earnest moan that escaped his lips, you worked on him for a while like this until you could feel him cumming in your mouth.
And with a loud pop you took him out your mouth “ I need you Cas” you told him while panting. He gave a loud groan once you took him out but looked at you “Then you have me” he stated with a touch of lust. He proceeded to lower himself to your entrance, he gave you one last look as his cock entered you. You immediately wrapped your arms around his neck for stability as he started to grind against you.
You start to find yourself in a state of bliss and ecstasy as Castiel’s hips jut into you at a slow rate, but when you can finally form a coherent sentence, you tell him he can speed up. “Are you sure..?” he asks, through pants, “…yeah- mmm” you get cut off by his increase slightly, as moans start to replace your speech. Cas continues to repeat at this pace until he starts to speed up on his own, and you feel that familiar coil in your gut. You both start to groan and moan, chasing your highs as Castiel’s thrusts start to get erratic. All you could do was cling onto Castiel's neck for dear life once his thrusts became slobby, the knot in your stomach was getting tighter tighter with pleasure once Castiel’s dick slammed into you a couple more times. While you both moaned and groaned as he gave one final thrust making you both cum at the same time.
Castiel pumped himself inside you a couple of times, riding you through your high before fully exiting out of your cunt. You let yourself fall gently against the mattress as Castiel climbed next you, taking you in his arms, kissing your forehead telling you how much this meant to him and how proud of you he was for taking him in perfectly. You looked up at Cas cutting him off and giving him the most passionate kiss you had given him all night. He placed his hand on your jaw deepening the kiss furthermore, he then broke the kiss holding you in your arms for the rest of night as you drifted off to sleep peacefully. The world around you softened, and an angel stood watch over you through the night.

Not many wonder about what the world was like when the sky’s silent and pure black. It’s all at the top of our heads —the world’s asleep, at least, the part that’s bathing in darkness and the moonlight. But Anton wondered, he wondered what kind of dreams people slept with, what his tired uncle snores about at night.
He remembered being sat on the garage floor with his uncle who wore wounds and dark purple bruises all over his arms. A mechanic at work, and a magician at home. Anton was fascinated with how he could fix everything, everything but his aching heart.
Anton saw the way his uncle looked at the woman that lived across from their house. His uncle became a frequent visitor when their family moved to that neighborhood, and he thought it was because his uncle was just so fond of him. And while that’s a definite truth, he figured it must be because of that woman.
“Do you have a crush on her?” the innocent question fell off of Anton’s lips as he watched his uncle rummage through a box of equipment to give his dad’s car a fix.
“No.” his uncle laughed, and the poor boy wouldn’t be able to sense the hints of frailty in his tone. “How about you? I see you. You’re all eyes for their youngest.”
The youngest child of the family that lived across. Anton had always wanted to approach, but he would get startled the moment that pair of glittery eyes got to him. It made him quake in his heart, and every passing second he’d be feeling for his hair, to feel if it had jumped around making him look so foolish —no, not in front of you.
“She’s really pretty.” uttered through a grin, he starts fiddling with the fabric of his shirt.
“I bet she’s really nice too, like you. You should ask her to be your friend.” his uncle would keep his head under the hood of the car, still meddling with its insides. “Her mom is nice.”
Anton raised his brows as curiosity washed his face. “Is the woman her mom?” and to that his uncle could only nod, and along with his ashed face and wounds and dark purple bruises he wore a bittersweet smile. Anton had seen that smile so often that he thought it was just how he is.
It was at your eighth birthday party when Anton noticed how different his uncle smiled around your mother. And Anton would smile the same way when he would so shyly blurt out, “Happy birthday Y/n.” he felt his heart taking leaps that there were no stops in between his words, just flat but still all over the place. You served him a slice of your coral pink cake. But he could already taste the sugar from your smile alone.
He was forced in there. He would say forced because he had hinted frustration with the way he had dropped his back against the chair at dinner, but truly he was only anxious of meeting you, greeting you, seeing the silk ropes of your hair catching the harsh rays of the sun up close rather than from the window of his living room. He’d tell his uncle, but he was assured that it would all be fine, even if he himself was anxious to be accompanying his nephew to the birthday party being hosted by his greatest love.
Anton watched the adults from a distance, overlooking the inkling pining from his uncle’s actions. His uncle who had refused to see women because of work, not caring if people suspected him of not being into women at all. He valued his heart, yet had never taken care of it. It was not clear to Anton the words said that had left his uncle to lose the whim in him that night. Though, he was sure of one thing. He had got himself a friend.
He found out his friend played the piano, that’s why she had such pretty hands, and had as much passion as he did. He played the piano too. After he arrived from school in the afternoon, he got himself in more comfortable clothes, then he’d be shoving chicken, rice and some seasoned veggies in his mouth. He considered himself careful for not being scolded despite being in a rush. After that he started to walk to the door. It would take him twenty-seven steps. One. To open his door the same time you would. Two. He started to think about what to say. Six. And what not to say. Fourteen. He felt like his pulse was at the same rhythm as his steps. Twenty-seven. He finally opens the door.
He must’ve had godly intuition, or maybe it was fate doing its work. You both surprised each other, doors swiping open being met with the distant sight of each other. The distance was vast, but he could see such amazing and beautiful pictures in your eyes. Now he was about to take fifteen steps to you. He took notice of the way your hair waved back even if it wasn’t a windy day. And it was because you ran to him, your avidness showing through the grin you carried to him.
“Hi Anton!” he had never heard a voice so lively. Somehow it made him feel like he could do anything at that moment, free.
“Hello, Y/n.” his lips were pressed together as his voice started to falter.
He wanted to beat himself up for sounding so enfeebled and it was so not cool. But you giggled at his dainty utterance, and it was like having another slice of that coral pink cake, so sweet.
“How was school?” you had just gone from school too. You were attending a different school, but yours and his still held the same schedule it seems.
“It was okay.” he couldn’t admit that he felt like crying when he was taunted for being too quiet.
“Are you sure?” you followed the steps of your mother, to ask if they were sure if you weren’t so sure yourself.
He shrugs, and you could hear the bottom of his shoes grinding against the stray leaves on the ground from the old oak tree by your house. “I think the kids at school don’t like me.” for a second he thought he had said something wrong with the way your brows knitted from what he said, and so he’d speak again, “But maybe it’s just me. They were joking I think.”
“Well it’s a ridiculous joke. You’re literally so nice. You’re the nicest boy I know.” it was the facts speaking, considering every other boy in your life seemed to fall dumb with throwing balls around and sipping unpalatable liquid while watching other people throwing balls around.
Being the nicest boy in your life would be the bourne of Anton’s living moments for as long as he could remember. He owes you for all the times you’ve given him a smile as bright as day, and when you’d let him run his fingers through the silk of your hair, and when you’d talk to him about whatever came to mind, no matter how arbitrary or unusual. He felt like he was in debt because of how much he’s heard your dear voice. And how he missed it when dusk caught up to your ventures. He wanted to give you the world just for existing.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
You laughed when you heard Anton huff about how typical this essay topic was. You were now thirteen. Also in the same middle school. You stuck by each other like an ant with a pint of sugar. It’s been five years, and he was still the nicest boy you know. You two were the best of friends. Inseparable most times. People believed it would be impossible to keep the two of you out of each other’s wonders and giggles. Every means of socializing would be your world colliding with his. There was no other pair of eyes, or lips, or an angelic voice he looked for within the trifling crowds of students in your class or anywhere else. In his world there was only yours.
“I’ve heard this question so many times. Now I’m not even sure what to answer.” his hands rested on the paper he had laid out, but his eyes were attached to your eyes like he was looking for something in them —which if he were, he would’ve been looking all day.
“How about a swimmer? don’t you want to be that? or a pianist?” his eyes followed the movements of your eyelids that opened a bit more for his reply.
“Well, I guess I could get an athletic scholarship.” the truth was he was too caught up with how comfortably your eyes kept a lock on his. He wasn’t able to actually ponder what he truly wanted. “You?”
He was eager to hear from you. He knew in that beautiful soul of yours you bear such amazing dreams. “Maybe a musician. I love music.”
“I do too.” it was a spur of the moment thing —he mulled his lips, his eyes fluttering down to your coral pink lips. He thought it must be as sweet as that coral pink icing. “I love you too.”
Your eyes would be as wide as the gap that separated the two of you, not exactly broad, but not close enough. “Oh, then, I love you too, Ton.” you had made it out to be as him declaring how much he appreciates you for being his best friend. Because what else could it be?
You’d find out soon enough, you were already fifteen. Fifteen and still oblivious of each other’s affection. Your friends could tell with just a single glance. Even when silence was overbearing, the two of you would dwell deep in each other’s eyes. Now that you’re older —and a lot closer— he’s been a lot more expressive. And you were too, however it would only be for him. His arms were always around you. Wrapped around your shoulders, and if lost in the moment, around your waist. He thought you never noticed how careful and gentle his touch was. You did, all of it. It would kind of sting too. He’d leave an imprint of his zeal on your skin, even if sometimes not bear, it would burn, but in a good way. It would sting the moment it’s taken away from you. The longing, it was something you weren’t so sure how you’d act on.
At sixteen, he was fully focused on his cello. He had given up the piano for it. You supported him throughout everything, but his dubiety would not allow for him to get a good night’s sleep. He thought of what you could’ve felt when he said he wanted to play the cello and not the piano. It was because the piano was something you both loved but you’d affirm to him, “It’s not the piano we share the love for. It’s the music, isn’t it?” he felt foolish about the whole ordeal. Still, you thought it was sweet of him for being so broody.
He took a lot of classes for the cello while you were out practicing for your solos. And soon he’d be practicing for recitals too. It kept you apart, but you knew you’d both be doing something you love. A breath of fresh air if you will. That air would become too hard to inhale eventually. You waited for Anton, just right outside where he and his band practiced. There was a small crack where you could see that he had made a new friend. You knew that friend, she was popular amongst boys. Though, you heard that she was not in for fooling around, it wouldn’t stop you from driving your sanity close to the fear of losing Anton. She’s a dream. Anton loved to talk about dreams, dreams for the future, dreams when you're asleep, even ones when you’re awake. You wondered, was his dream now standing in front of you carrying such luscious locks and sanguine eyes with the stature of a runway model? she held a bow too, which could only mean one thing. She too played the cello. Anton talked about how she taught him this and that, probably about playing the cello in more efficient ways. Either way, you couldn’t remember. Your mind trailed off to the thought that he might start to enjoy practice more than spending time with you.
Your thoughts had led you back to the music room, angry notes flying off the piano as you let your heart lead your fingers. You meant to play a little softer, as to not draw anyone into the room. You failed in doing so. The piano’s song echoed throughout the room, but you had no time to care if it was going through the walls. Lost in song, you weren’t able to catch the sound of the door’s hinges moving along at the pace of your head that tilted with the rhythm of which you played. After laying out the last note, another would follow, and it sounds, “Are you okay, sweet?”
Anton heard the aggressive play even being fifteen steps away from the music room. After those fifteen steps, there you were, sitting on the bench as your fingers worked the music. He had to pinch himself to assure he wasn’t dreaming. You looked like you had just gone down from the heavens. But he saw your nerves seemingly wanting to pop out and the way your brows were knitted too. Before he approached, he was already thinking of reasons. It could’ve been your music teacher putting you through rough practice. Or maybe it was him. He was thinking of everything he had said and done for the past week, the past month even. Then he decides he’d walk up to you towards the end of the song you played.
“I’m fine.” but you ended up closing the piano a little too hard, causing the keys to play by themselves from under. You immediately looked up at Anton, and like what you’d expect, his face reflected his doubt. “I’m sorry. I just have a lot in my mind.”
Your body almost fell limp when you felt the warmth you’ve been longing for the three painfully slow days of continuous practice without seeing him. His arms snaked around you, just above your chest. He rests his chin on your head. “What is it, sweet? Tell me.”
He felt your head move as you sighed. His body responded by getting himself seated next to you, keeping one arm around you. He gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze. You eyed his gentle hand on you and kept it there when you uttered, “Do you think those kids back in your elementary school still don't like you?”
“Maybe? I don’t know, really.” your question was too random, but he’d let his hand slowly fall on your elbow, and the sensation clouded your mind.
“Anton, I wish I could’ve just told you then.” you felt his grasp grow tighter. He pulled himself closer to you. His breath staggered seeing the thin layer of sea on your eyes.
“Told me what?” he could almost feel your exhaustion, even if your hands were cold when he held them.
You chuckled, but it was so broken that it would only lead to his grasp closing even more. “So what if they didn’t like you? screw those kids. I like you. I have for the longest time, Anton.” you sniffled to fight the waters. “And not as a friend, but more.”
The warmth he had given you all those times you’d feel him were all coming back to him. It was so great. The feeling wasn’t overwhelming. It was utter relief. But it told him two things. One, you’ve both been in love ever since his family moved into that neighborhood. And two, you were both oblivious of your flourishing love. He had thought of the second, that time he told you he loves you —seemingly out of nowhere. Once realizing what he had just said, he thought he had dug his own grave, but you would innocently tell him you loved him too. That moment was a slap to his face. He thought all he’ll ever be to you is a best friend.
The winds of change blew stronger in that room. “Y/n, when I said I love you, I meant it. Then, I was only hoping you saw me the same way.” his fingers drew circles on your skin. You were both red and hot by then, still he was able to take jest of the situation. “This isn’t a prank, is it?”
You laughed, pushing yourself into his neck. It was the heat of your air that had pushed him to hold your chin up, and for the first time your lips would meet. It lasted for three seconds —not that you could count— and he’d hover over your lips for a while. And he’d smile, pressing his forehead against yours. He had to swiftly lick on his lips to confirm a theory. He was stunned to taste your strawberry chapstick. Sweet, you truly were.
“Anton?” only he could hear it with how miniscule your voice was, and it was just right for he was yet to move from where he halted. He chuckles. You laughed. Soon you had your face buried within the crook of his neck.
You two left the music room as you would when you’re together. Significantly close in distance. The only difference would be your entwined hands. You both walked past your friends’ coos in the hallway wearing sheepish grins. It felt as if you were both children again, running towards the exit whilst you held onto each other tightly —just to be sure the other won’t get lost as you sped out into the outside world. Your conjoined ecstasy was heard by the array of students that passed by. If laughter was medicine, you’d both be dead from overdosing. He was careful to lead you out of the public space. He could feel his phone buzzing in his pants since it was practice afternoon for his swimming team. You were aware of their schedule, but he’d keep your mind off of it, ultimately lulling you with a kiss.
It had only taken a giggle for you to be laying on the grass of your backyard. The constellations drew the love emanating from your huddled bodies. He traced it with his eyes. When he looked down, he was tracing your features like he did with the stars. Even with the bed of stars in the sky, and the moon, you still held a shine brighter than all of them combined. He gazed on the bead of light on the tip of your nose. And then everywhere else it scattered. With his eyes he followed the outline of your lips, and the curve of your chin. Then he needed to feel. His palm, soft and gentle, would find its rest on your cheek. You’ve been watching his eyes with your own the whole time, watching for where they trailed.
“Wouldn’t you be in trouble for skipping training?” your voice was mellow. It was the softest and prettiest melody he’s ever heard. His fingers glide down from your cheek to your jaw.
“I don’t think I want to be a swimmer.” he says, caressing your skin whilst he roams your visage with his eyes once more.
“Then what do you want to be, Ton?” his other hand went on top of your head. He moves the stray strands, being delicate with your kind locks.
“I want to be with you.” the tone is low, a lot deeper than when you were thirteen. Baritone and painstaking. Yet it was pure velvet in your ears.
You tittered at his reply. It was a means of covering your flushed face. You moved a little closer and nuzzled your face against his clothed chest. “I do too.” you mumbled into the fabric of his shirt. He heard it, and he grew nervous from you feeling the pounding in his chest because of the proximity. “Seriously now, what do you dream of for the future?” you moved from his chest to look up at him.
“I was being serious.” he propped his head up as he chuckled. Now he hovered slightly above you, elbow resting near the side of your head. He inhales the September breeze as he takes in all of you. “Though I am considering just being a musician. I might have an opportunity in line to be able to do that. To make music.”
You lie with lax on the grass bedding. You noticed that only one side of his face was shone on by twilight. You might have been staring for too long, because then he’d let his lips fall on your forehead, and then down to your lips. Your eyes glittered with the reflection of the stars in them. But he figured, it might be just the image they held. There was no need for stars, or moons, or the sun for you to light up his world. Later that night, his uncle had to come in and retrieve him. His uncle with wounds and dark purple bruises, all of which were now faded. Change had played after your birthday party. Even if it didn’t seem like it, the change was all for the better —even for Anton’s uncle. That night after your birthday party, he admits to his feelings. And your mom granted him closure. It was better than nothing anyways.
The night Anton was fetched from the backyard of your home —the same place where you held your eighth birthday— his uncle finally told him the tragic tale of his greatest love. Once upon a time, his uncle and your mother were like you and him, but sadly fate had worked against them. He had gone away for work. The distance, the time, overwhelmed their love. It plummets quickly after a long time of losing contact. Then your mother had you. Anton’s uncle would assure him that there was beauty in it all, and it was you. It was insinuated that both you and Anton were brought down to earth from the heavens to be with each other. Still, fear proved to be man’s greatest enemy.
With only a very few inches left to seventeen, he took strides. It was hard to keep up even with your hands enclosed with his. You took steps that were just right. But right beside you was him leaping forward to the inevitable. He had you in his arms when he contemplated. It was nothing to contemplate about, he had to tell you. But he feared that his farewell would be the last. What if history repeats itself? what if he leaves today and tomorrow you would no longer love him? he was already grieving over what he could only foresee in his nightmares. Even if his body was as warm as spring, he was cold. You could feel it.
“What’s wrong Ton?” he felt guilt dawning down on him for causing that much worry to you.
“I just have a lot in my mind.” like deja vu, he’d jump slightly from where he sat. He came back to that day in the music room. You played valse sentimentale, he remembered being so lovestruck with how perfect you played, even after finding out it was of great emotion from your fear of losing him. He couldn’t even remember that girl’s name. “I’m moving back to Korea.”
“You passed the audition?” you were genuinely happy for him. But then again, you had expected it. You never doubted his abilities. He is still his harshest critic. “That’s great! you’d have a chance at making music, like you always dreamed of.”
But at night when he dreamed, he saw paradise. He saw you. He had brought those dreams under the light of day. He thought about it whilst he meddled with his cello. He thought about it while he studied. He had even smiled so foolishly in the shower imagining it occurring in real life. That dream he had was under the moonlight. Maybe it was because of that night in your backyard, but in his dream you weren’t on grass. You were at some place small. It wasn’t exactly cramped per say, but it wasn’t of great space either. It was nothing important at first. He was more focused with the light that bounced off the skin on your face. When he dreamed of it again, it fed his fears. You were all tears in this dream. He wondered if he was seeing the future. There were no words spoken. It made it hard for him to decipher what that dream meant. It kept him awake for more hours than he should've. He could only hope it wasn’t a foreshadowing of a fallout.
At the departure area of the airport is where you held him with all the vigor you had left in you. You were both seventeen already. Now he was to be flown to his dreams, though it would not be the dreams he had of you. The tears had already been drained from both of you days prior, now he could only savor the remainder of his thirty-minute wait with you.
“Take care, Ton.” you utter against his temple so softly as your fingers brushed his hair. “I know they’ll take good care of you there too.”
“I wish I could be with you.” he had his eyes closed, head lying on your shoulder. He had his whole weight on you, but it was very much the opposite of a heavy burden. “You could take care of me better than anyone.”
You lightly pushed his shoulder that hung in the open whilst giggling. And he smiled against the scent of your cologne. The smell was sweet. It could’ve been because he was so convinced sweet is just what you are. But even so, he drowned in it. The thirty minutes was up, and he was headed for the sky. With exchanged I love yous and a lengthy farewell, he was off. He was in no mood for the plane movies. He had the memories he’s made with you that he kept on rewind in his head as he flew. He had dozed off, soon he was dreaming again. He woke up from it. He saw you in a dress, like the one you liked to wear when you were kids. Blue with the bows. Missing you was dreadful, but maybe, just maybe, landing would be a little nicer. Then it would be a little easier for his longing to subside.
He was training all over again. It was none like swimming, but there were even more restrictions. Have a consistent diet. Never miss practice. Monthly evaluations are held every month’s end, and do not miss it. No sneaking out, and most importantly, no dating. But there was no rule stating he couldn’t miss you, there was no rule that stated he should break up with you. All he had to do was bear a secret. It was easier said than done, but he made it work. He had too. Only seeing and hearing you through his screen was incomparable to having you in real life. If he had a superpower, it would be being able to teleport. He wanted to so badly when he had called you as you studied for your midterms. You listened to his tales of training, how his fellow trainees were and all. You were being so good to him, he just wanted to have his arms around you again. To console you from the thousand words you read through while still having ears open for him. You were now eighteen. It’s been a year. Growing tired of this setting was not inside both of you. You would both treat it like the new normal now, but it was anything to keep your boat stable.
“I miss you so much. I want to go home. But they say I can’t. Not yet.” he hugged himself like how he saw you with yourself. You had your own arms around your body, trying to make it up as his. But it wasn’t the same. Painful is all it was, but he was there right in front of you. Not quite for being on the screen of your laptop, but he was there.
“I miss you too.” was all you could say. You hoped he could sense your yearning through what he could see from his own screen.
It’s his smile that told you he yearns for you just as much, if not more. “I’ll visit you as soon as I can.” he wanted to see your face taking in the light of your surroundings again. He wanted to feel your gentle skin and your silk hair again. Its ghost lingered on his fingers that held onto his sides. “I love you, sweet.”
“I love you too, Ton.” you wondered if he could see it. Your eyes brimmed with water, but you were yet to let it fall. And you wouldn’t be able to when his smile grew wider. Your lips curved, an imitation of his.
You were off to college when he told you he was up for debut. Not exactly where his dreams lie, but it was the closest he could get. An idol. He fits the job well you thought. You knew people would love him, though not as much as you did. You’d be his number one fan, always. It was when you had fixed your dorm room when he called you, gushing about the guys he was going to debut with, all while he tried to scan around where you were. It’s where he could’ve been too. Now it’s quite an impossibility.
“I bet you’re even more handsome than all six of them combined.” you furrowed your brows in jest, determined to have him keep him show you his underlying confidence.
“You’re reaching.” you’d both laugh as his obviously quoted response. “But thank you. You must be telling the truth. You always stare at me.”
You guffawed even if he was stating facts. “Yeah, but you must’ve known by then that I was only imitating you. You’ve had your eyes on me, since like, what? since we were children right?”
He hummed an approval to your question. Art imitates life. You were the most beautiful painting, the only worthwhile movie, and the most pleasant song. You were all of those that depicted the love he had for life. His own and yours. “You’re so beautiful and sweet. I want to see you so bad.”
You’ve always wondered why he called you sweet, my sweet, he’d often say referring to you, or to call for you. But his words and the way his eyes worked around you, the way the ends of his lips rose for you, it was telling. It told you everything there is to know. You thought maybe it was his influence that had driven you to study psychology. He also couldn’t believe what he was hearing when you told him about your major. It was again, something he wasn’t able to foresee before. If him being an idol seemed like a stretch, you studying psychology would’ve been a reckless swing that went thirty miles off your expectations. You thought psychology was intriguing. Though you really didn’t need the books to understand Anton, you wanted to study the nature of man. Would it be possible that there’s anyone in this world as precious as he could be?
Other than that, you wanted to understand dreams. Dreams vary for everyone, and there are dreams people share, dreams that carry definitions that are listed in websites and reiterated in YouTube videos or in mini series of shorter videos on TikTok. You wanted to have a deeper understanding of how it worked. Where sometimes it’s sheer symbolism, and other times it’s a vision of the future. The people that you studied with were so different yet held much of the same curiosity as you. You were all aware that it was nothing fantastical. It was a bearing of life. And it was what made it beautiful. You found friends in them. You would always mention a lover that had ventured off to pursue his dreams. But you weren’t allowed to say his name, or what he did. All to avoid any mishaps in the future. It was something Anton would thank you for, even though he wished both you and him could show off each other like you did with the superficial belongings you wore. But it wouldn’t be superficial for him, it would be a yell to the world that you were for him just as he was for you.
Your dreams were always so specific. One night you had dreamed of the skylight at the airport. A year later you saw the same view. Another pivotal moment was from your childhood. You had dreamt of a boy, the one that lived from across your house. He ate cake with you on the patio. Days later you sat next to him as dusk approached, munching on what was left of your birthday cake. Last night you had a dream. It was somewhere you couldn’t recognize. It was long after the day had fallen and the sky drew black. Anton was there, and he cried. He held your hand so closely to his chest too. He said something, but it came out blurry. When you tried to speak for yourself, you woke up. Taking another breath, dewdrops escaped your eyes. It was one that led you to exert more effort on your studies. To understand what that dream meant. Because if it were the future talking to you, it could be something very dear or it could be the end of something beautiful.
Your doubts would get the better of you. Your calls would mostly be just staring into the light of your screens, and the talk couldn’t be anymore typical. He grew more and more insecure by the day, what if his fears were being answered? but it should not be be that way, he could still talk to you every night and whenever he could. Things shouldn’t end like how it did for his uncle. A phonecall and a cold evening was all it took for you to realize how much your thoughts ate both of you up.
“I think I can go home for my birthday.” it was an unsure statement, but he sounded firm. He was turning nineteen, and close to debuting too. And before giving his life away to stardom, he wished to spend all time possible with you.
The look in your eyes made his heart shrink, and it almost came crashing down when you told him, “You should spend your birthday with your dad, your family. I’m gonna be very busy, Ton.” you voice was as gloomy as the view outside his window. “It’s study season, but I’ll keep contact with you.” your gloom washed over him, but still he was thankful that you didn’t say you would just try, but you will.
He wouldn’t reply but, but instead you’d see him just staring. He did it the way he always would with you. Back when you were still close enough to see even the smallest cracks of your faces.
“I have something for you too. To which adress Ton?” when you lift your head up from your paper, you were met with the reflection of his screen in his glossed eyes. “Ton?”
“Dorms.” it was one word, and you still heard the crack in his voice.
“Anton, I really wish I could see you too. But It would just be this time. After this you can see me whenever you’re available.” he felt your hands holding his cold ones. He felt warmth that wasn’t there. “I love you, so, so much.”
“I love you more.” he did truly. And he was dying to prove it to you, and to the world.
It was a busy week, for you and for him. He was subjected to hours of practice, and he used it to distract himself from the dread. He was deprived greatly of your loving. But he knew you struggled too. He knew college didn’t treat you fairly. That’s why you were always on late-night calls. Even if you fell asleep he’d stay. For a while he’s looking over you. And after a few blinks he’s off to dreamland. His last dream kept repeating, over and over again. He tried his best to not let it show through his speech and his face. His face that everyone paid him great attention for. It was hard, painful even. His eyes, instead of tracing the lines of your lips, were tracing the lines of the practice room mirrors.
At nineteen, he woke up. He got up from the left side of his bed, where there was less space. His foot hit one end of his bedside table. He winced, but it was not one for grumbles. He walked to the bathroom, then he brushed his teeth. He had to look again because he thought his toothbrush changed colors. It did, and it was Sungchan’s. He brushed his teeth again, this time minding the colors whilst he thought of how he would explain the whole incident —or if he should even explain at all. He got behind the shower curtains just for a quick wash. After that he’d go back to his room to slip in some practice clothes. Once his loose hoodie had gone over his head, his eyes stumbled upon the calendar. It was his birthday. Almost forgot. He was off to practice, not minding the date. It was just like any other day, or birthday for that matter. Even then it seemed like nobody even knew it was his birthday. So he figured there was no point to dither.
He was nineteen when he was given heavy scolding for not being precise with his dancing. It wasn’t the first time, but this has been the worst he’s ever gotten. Everyone was not aware of the heavy load he’s been carrying in his heart. Their dance teacher’s yell would make it even heavier. The six others were supposed to come out with a cake with three candles, and balloons that read ‘19’. After a few times of brushing back his hair with his fingers and fighting back the tears. And when the first drop seeped out, he stood up from the floor and with staggered steps, he got out of that place. He was off somewhere, where he had dreamt of.
He thought that place in his dreams was utter imagination. But it was real. Maybe he did see the future. But you weren’t there, on the balcony of his room. The balcony faced another building that shunned all others. All he could really do was look up. He ignored the countless notifications that came pouring out of his lockscreen. It got too much that he’d silent his phone, turning on the do-not-disturb function. Before he could lock his phone though, he’d stare at his wallpaper. It was a photo of you, a very discreet one at that. It showed only a small portion of your face. Your wispy lashes and the curvature of your nose. And your eyes. His reflection when he took the photo was caught in it. And he was smiling, the way he should’ve been for his birthday. But now all he could think about was his uncle’s story. Despite the assurances that pointed to all directions that led him to you, he felt as if one day he’d be forcing himself to forget. But he could never forget you. Not even by great force. A ringing would dawn in his head. It took another drop of salt before he realized that the ringing was from the doorbell of their complex.
It was not his first time answering the door. And he counted, from his room to there, it took sixteen steps. It always made him reminisce about that day in the music room. How you thought he’d be interested in anyone else that was not you. He had no space in his heart for any more interests because it’s filled with you and the music you both grew up loving —but never as much as you grew to love each other. He’d count his first step out of his room as one. He wondered if it would be his angered manager or his worried groupmates that would come through the door. Two. He was already wary of the consequences. Six. His birthday is long gone now, all he could think about was how he was going to explain himself. Twelve. Or maybe if he should call you late at night. Fourteen. He hoped once he’s dialed you, it won’t go straight to your inbox. Fifteen. He remembered you said you would send him a gift. Maybe, just maybe, it’s your gift waiting for him behind that muted door. Sixteen. The door opens slowly. He expects a box, small, big, anything. Or maybe he’d a screeching yell, or stressed apologies.
When he’d the door was barely a peek and wide open, he saw blue. Blue, but somehow bright and lively. A pair of glittery eyes. And lips of his favorite color —coral pink. A hug is what he’d receive, and his eyes would continue to dispense his sorrows. He held you, like it was the first time all over again. And he led you to his room’s balcony, while still holding a box. He’d looked at you, like it was the first time. It felt like back when your houses faced each other. When he followed the same routine religiously, every single day, just so he could open that door the same time you would yours. He was happy that he’s able to let his eyes draw along your features. At the same time he was terrified. “Please tell me this isn’t a dream.”
Tears swelled from his eyes. You tried your best to keep your jubilance, but your grin falters when you catch a glimpse of his dreaded countenance. “It’s not, Ton.”
You placed a hand on his cheek, and it was warm. He touched it with his own, and you’d flinch with how cold he was. He brought your hand from his cheek to his lips, leaving his fervor on your skin with a kiss. Suddenly you were brought to tears. The scene was all too familiar. An instance of deja vu.
“I’m not dreaming?” almost in a sob, he’d ask you. His eyes pierced through your psyche, not harshly, but like he begged. You pulled him close to you, and there after a wistful eternity, he felt your silken lips against his.
Forever is only possible in fiction, but he believed there was forever in you, and he sought for it in your essence. He felt like he was going crazy, and from chilling, you felt his body grow hotter as he lost himself in you.
With a gentle push, he pulled away. But almost in a whine, he utters, “Why?” he wanted to cry again when he heard that sugared giggle of yours.
“Calm down, Ton.” you reply, still tittering at him.
His hands cupped your face as he peppered it with kisses from your forehead to your chin. And he ends it with a kiss to your lips. “This is the best gift ever.” his breath crashed with yours, sending heatwaves to your rosy faces.
“Actually, your dad helped get here.” you kept your voice low, laying your head on his chest. “He was worried. Your group mates were messaging him too. They asked if you were home.” his eyes would dilate just enough as he hears for you. His fingers found their way through your hair. He’s never seen or felt anything like it before. “I don’t know if I should be saying this, but they meant to prank you. It’s a part of the surprise.” he heard him breathe a little louder.
“They yelled at me for a prank —to surprise me?” he stammered with his words. His mellow voice made you nuzzle closer to him. “The prank didn’t work.”
“Yeah. I know.” you pulled away from his embrace. You faced him once you were sat up. “You’re debuting soon.”
“If soon is September, then yeah.” his eyes grew larger, and he could see an image of the stars in your backyard. “It’s our anniversary.” you gave him a weak nod, the next second your eyes released a river. He hurriedly swiped his thumb over them, “I’ll try my best to be around. It’s a busy month.”
He was perplexed with how you laugh at yourself, replacing his hands with your own and wiping the tears away. “I thought we’re breaking up.” he made you yelp with how quick he got you enclosed in his arms again.
“No, no. I can keep a secret. You can too.” you felt the movement in his throat as he gulped. He was choking back tears. “No one’s breaking up. Not in this universe.”
He allowed for your tears to continue falling on his forearms, it was hot, but forgiving. “I dreamt about this very moment. I thought it meant something bad. Because in there you were crying like earlier, and I felt so bad…” he ends your sobs with another kiss.
“I did too.” he felt his fears creeping up behind him, but they would all go away when he met eyes with the girl he fell in love with through his living room window. “I dreamed about it every night, thought about it everyday. And I dreamed of a future where we’d share a cake on our own patio.”
His presence was like a meadow, so peaceful and warm, and comforting. His dream of eating cake with you like you had back then made you laugh louder than before, and he took it all in, making sure no other sounds drowned out his favorite song.
He still wondered about what lies beyond the darkness of night, how dreams choose their explorers and nightmares crawled for their victims. But now he understood where dreams lie with him. Sometimes what seemed like a nightmare waiting to happen might just be a glimpse of his sweetest dreams. That dream he had where he thought you’d be there to end it all with him, it had only driven him to finally grasp on what it meant to dream. It was what his heart truly wanted.
Maybe that dream was bound to come true. Because at nineteen, he received the biggest surprise of his life. And he ate a coral-pink cake with the girl that used to live from across his house. He believed it was foreshadowing, but still, he had it in him to make it come true.
Dreams could be a symbol of some psychological conflict we’re having within ourselves, but on the night of March 21st, year 2023, I found out that it could be a vision of the future. Though it would be discreet, just enough for you to have it mistaken as a future barricade. I may be wrong, I could’ve been just lucky to have someone as passionate about dreams as I am —I got this passion from him anyways— but the best way to deal with the weight it forces upon us is to just let it play out. It could be the catalyst for the dreams you’re set to build. I dream of owning a home, with a wealthy meadow, with blue and pink butterflies. I want a patio where it would be a comfort to lie and stargaze, where it will be comfortable to eat too. Because my fiancé loves cake, but he loves me even more. (Y/s/n. To Live A Dream. 2039)
End.

A Night at St James’ Park
Warnings: none.
My requests are open if you have any ideas for future fics. My first go at writing, so be kind ☺️
Tumblr media
The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains of the hotel room, casting a warm glow on the space. Sam Fender awoke to the sound of his phone buzzing on the bedside table. He groggily reached for it, squinting at the screen. It was a message from Dean.
“Mate I’ve not slept a wink last night, I can’t believe it.”
Sam smiled, feeling the nerves in his stomach shift into something else - excitement, anticipation, and maybe a little bit of disbelief. He was going to play St. James' Park tonight. It was all a bit of a joke really, him and the band claiming they’ll play St James one day, the same stadium their dads had been taking them to when they were bairns. That was until Owain, his manager, got the call to work out the logistics of it actually going ahead. Mental.
Turning over, he saw YN still asleep beside him, the soft rise and fall of her chest, a stark contrast to the way his heart was pounding with anticipation. Her hair was spread across the pillow, her face relaxed, peaceful. Sam couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her - his constant support through all the highs and lows of his career. His whole career had her in mind, this was about her as much as it was about him. Without her, his music wouldn’t exist. Tonight was going to be huge, but the nerves swirling in his chest calmed every time he looked at her.
He carefully moved closer to her, brushing a few strands of hair from her face, and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
“Babe,” he whispered, trying not to startle her.
YN stirred, her eyes fluttering open. She blinked a few times, then smiled, recognising the familiar sound of his voice.
“Morning rockstar,” she murmured, her voice still thick with sleep. “You feeling alreet?”
“Yeah... just thinking about tonight,” Sam said, a slight tremor in his voice. “St. James' Park. Can’t believe it’s finally here.”
Her smile grew wider. She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it gently. “You’re going to be amazing. You’ve worked your arse off for this, Sam. You deserve it.”
He let out a breath, his nerves creeping back. “I just want to make it perfect.”
“Everything will be perfect. You’ve got this.”
Sam leaned in and kissed her again, this time a little longer, a promise of everything that had yet to come. “I’m glad you’re here with me. It’s all so much better when you’re by my side.”
YN smiled softly, brushing his cheek with the back of her hand. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
A few moments passed, the morning settling around them in a comfortable silence. But Sam knew the day wasn’t going to wait.
“I’ve gotta get going, darlin’” he said reluctantly, his fingers still brushing against hers as he stood up.
“Yeah, I’ll get ready too,” she said, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. “I’ll see you soon.”
Sam nodded, a little hesitant to leave her side. But they both knew the day ahead was packed with a million things to do. As Sam left the room, his heart pounded, the weight of the upcoming performance sitting heavy on his chest. But there was no going back now.
-
YN stood in front of the mirror, applying a bit of makeup, her thoughts drifting as she thought about Sam’s big night. Sam’s music rang through their house, she truly was a fan of his work, even buying her own vinyl that Sam insisted he could have just gotten a copy of for her. She wanted to support him the same as any other fan when it was released. She was so proud of him, and she knew how much this show meant to him. After everything they had both been through, this was the moment.
She slipped into her outfit - a worn black denim skirt accompanied with her Newcastle United shirt. Of course the shirt had ‘Fender’ and ‘17’ printed across the back, a small touch her and the other girlfriends of the band had organised. She grabbed her bag and made her way out of the house.
The traffic was heavy getting over to St James Park. She decided to make the journey easier for the driver, getting out sooner than she should have. It gave her a chance to take in the streets. Full of excited fans ready for the show. She passed several fans in the entrance, all buzzing with excitement. It was no secret within the area that she was Sam’s girlfriend. Having been together since their teenage years in such a small town, everyone knew everyone. Making her way to the back entrance of the building, some fans stopped to talk about their excitement for tonight. She took a moment with each fan, chatting briefly. It was important to her that they knew she appreciated their support for Sam.
YN continued on her way, feeling the building excitement in the air. This was his moment.
With a smile beaming across her face, she made her way to the family box. The room was already buzzing with excitement as the bands families gathered. She spotted his mam beaming with pride, talking to Sarah. It was always funny seeing Sam’s two motherly figures speaking.
“Alreet lass, how’s it goin?”
She turned quickly and realised it was Sam’s brother, Liam.
“Liam!” She giggled as he embraced her in a tight squeeze, clearly very excited.
“Oh my god I cannit believe it man, St James Park! It’s absolutely bouncing out there.” She exclaimed excitedly to him, as he passed her a beer from the ice bucket.
As the hours passed, she spent time speaking amongst some of the people she’d known since she was just a bairn.

Backstage, Sam paced nervously, his bandmates doing their best to keep the mood light with jokes and banter. But Sam could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him. He looked out from the backstage area and saw the sea of fans already filling the stadium. It was unreal.
“This is it, mate,” Dru said, clapping him on the back. He could hear Mark Knopfler’s ‘Local Hero’ playing out into the crowd.
“I know, I know,” Sam replied, his voice tight with nerves. He could feel his palms sweating, his heart racing in his chest. He needed to make this count - not just for him, but for everyone who had been a part of his journey. “It’s hard to wrap my head around, you know? St. James' Park. It feels... unreal.”
“It is unreal. But you’ve earned it,” Dru said firmly.
The lights began to dim, and the crowd’s roar grew louder, signaling that it was time. Sam’s heart was pounding now, but when he looked at his bandmates, they were all standing tall, ready. He took a deep breath.
“Howay then,” he chuckled slightly.
As he walked on stage, the crowd’s energy hit him like a wave. The stadium roared with excitement, the sound deafening. Sam stepped up to the mic, taking in the sea of faces that had come to see him and his band. The first few chords of ‘Will We Talk?’ sent the crowd wild.
As the show went on, Sam’s nerves faded away, replaced by pure adrenaline. He sang with all his heart, every note a reflection of everything he had worked for. He spotted his family and friends in the VIP box, waving and cheering him on. It seemed like half of Shields was in that box. He made sure they were looked after, a small thank you for always supporting him even before his career kicked off.
He grinned, his heart swelling. And then, with a look to the side, he saw YN standing there with the rest of his family, her face alight with pride and love. Her arm flung around his mam’s back as they danced and sang their hearts out. Their relationship was always good, often his mam would joke she preferred her over him, not that he could blame her.
Sam couldn’t help it, being the last song of the night - grabbed the mic, his voice breaking through the music as he shouted, “You know, I’m not one to be a soppy bastard,” Sam spoke into the mic, turning to look at Dean as he laughed. “But I can’t play this last one without mentioning the lass behind it…behind most of these tunes really.” As he spoke, a pink sheen flushed his cheeks, he looked up to the box where YN was stood. “YN, this one’s for you darlin’, cheers for putting up with wor, I can’t imagine it’s easy like.” He chucked as he looked back down to his guitar.
‘Hypersonic Missiles’ boomed around the stadium. Sam looking directly at YN as he sang the lyrics,
“But I believe in what I'm feeling,
And I'm firing for you.
This world is gonna end but 'til then, I'll give you everything I have”
The crowd cheered again, and YN’s heart fluttered in her chest. She was so proud of him, so overwhelmed by how far he had come. This was the dream, the one they had talked about so many times in the past, and now it was real.
-
The night passed in a whirlwind of energy, cheers, and unforgettable moments. After the show, the band and their families made their way to the after-party, laughter filling the air as everyone celebrated together. Sam, a little drunk, his cheeks flushed with the adrenaline of the night, was in high spirits.
YN was by his side, watching him with admiration as he laughed and clinked glasses with his bandmates. She could see how much this meant to him, and that made her heart swell with pride.
“I can’t believe you did it,” she whispered to him, her arm wrapped around his waist.
Sam smiled, his eyes a little glassy. “I did it, darlin’. We did it.” He smiled at her, ignoring the group of drunk Geordies in front of them, focusing on her for what felt like the first time in forever after the whirlwind of the day.
YN nodded, pressing a kiss to his lips. “I couldn’t be prouder of you Sammy.”
The party raged on, but in that moment, with Sam by her side, YN knew this was one of those nights they would remember for the rest of their lives.

Whispers of rebellion

The summer in our quaint town always followed the same pattern - familiar faces, the same streets, and the usual gossip about everyone's affairs. It was the kind of place where people loved to talk, and Christopher Sturniolo was often at the heart of those conversations.
Tall, with a confident smile and a leather jacket that perfectly suited his rebellious persona, Chris embodied the archetype of the guy your parents cautioned you about. He was the one with the sleek black car that thundered as he raced through the streets, always testing boundaries.
And that smile... oh, that smile had me captivated from the very first moment I laid eyes on it.
As I crept out of the house that night, I couldn't shake the echo of my dad's stern words at dinner. "He’s the kind that’ll break your heart. He doesn’t listen to anyone. Trust me, I’ve known plenty like him." I had always heeded my parents' advice, but this time felt different.
Trembling with a mix of nerves and determination, I made my way through the dark streets towards the abandoned basketball court where Chris would be. The flickering streetlights seemed to conspire to keep my secret as I approached the spot.
There he stood, leaning casually against his car, the dim light catching the mischievous glint in his eyes as he noticed me. "You’re late" he teased, his arms crossed and a daring smile on his lips.
"I shouldn’t even be here" I said, though my wavering voice betrayed the fact that I desperately wanted to be.
Chris pushed himself off the car, the metal creaking as he did so, and began to walk toward me. His heavy boots made a distinct crunching sound against the cracked pavement. As he got closer, he leaned in, his face so near that I could feel his warm breath on my skin.
"You know your dad doesn't like me" he murmured, his voice low and intense. "And he's probably right about me."
I couldn't help but ask, "Then why am I here?" Surprisingly, my voice came out more confident than I had expected.
Chris chuckled, the sound rich and deep, sending a shiver down my spine. "Because you're not like everyone else. You're curious. You're different. You've got guts."
His words hit me right in the chest. No one had ever spoken to me like that before—like they truly saw me.
Before I could respond, another voice cut through the night air. "Yo, you're lucky we didn't leave without you!" It was Nick, Chris's brother, leaning out of the back of the car with a grin. His tousled hair fluttered in the wind, and his laid-back attitude matched his brother's rebellious energy.
Matt, who was Chris's identical twin, stood casually nearby, idly spinning his car keys on his finger. "We were about to bail" he remarked, arching an eyebrow as if questioning your sudden appearance. However, there was no hint of malice in his tone, just the playful and carefree vibe that seemed to accompany the Sturniolo brothers wherever they went.
"Nah, she's with me" Chris asserted, redirecting his attention back to you. He took your hand, and the warmth of his touch sent a tingle up your arm. "You ready for this?"
You paused for a moment, glancing between Chris, Nick, and Matt. They all wore the same mischievous look, as if they thrived on defying rules and didn't care who stood in their way. It was thrilling and dangerous, an intoxicating mix.
"She doesn't have to come" Matt interjected with a smirk, clearly teasing. "We don't bite... well, not too hard."
You rolled your eyes, unable to stifle the smile that spread across your lips. "Let's go" you declared, your voice unwavering.
Chris's smile broadened as he drew you closer. "Good choice. But just so you know, once you're in, there's no turning back."
Matt opened the door to the car and slid into the passenger seat, while Nick jumped into the back, adjusting his seatbelt with a quick click. Chris gestured for me to sit beside him in the driver’s seat, and as I settled in, the familiar rumble of the engine coming to life felt like the beginning of an exhilarating adventure.
“What would your dad say if he knew you were here?” Chris asked, glancing at me as he revved the engine. The question lingered in the air, charged with a sense of daring and excitement.
“He’d probably lock me up forever” I admitted with a laugh, attempting to conceal my nerves. “But I don’t care.”
Chris’s grin softened, a glint of something profound in his eyes. “You know what? Forget what everyone else says. Forget your dad. Just listen to yourself.”
The engine of the car roared to life as Chris pressed down on the gas pedal, igniting a surge of adrenaline that pulled us into the night. The world outside the window dissolved into a blur as Matt leaned over, cranking up the music, and Nick started drumming on the back of my seat, their laughter filling the air with an infectious energy that set the tone for the evening.
In that exhilarating moment, it felt like we were breaking free from everything—my father's strict rules, the suffocating expectations of our small town, and even my own lingering doubts. The wind rushed through the open windows, tousling our hair, and as Chris's hand found mine on the gearshift, a sense of liberation washed over me.
"This is just the beginning" Chris declared amidst the symphony of the engine and the music. "Stick with us, and you'll never be bored"
I believed him. In that chaotic and electrifying atmosphere, I knew that this was the escape I had been yearning for. Maybe my father was right—maybe Chris was trouble, and perhaps the Sturniolo brothers were the kind of guys I should have avoided.
But for the first time, I didn't care about the "shoulds." All that mattered was what I wanted.
As the car raced down the deserted streets, the starry night sky above us, I felt a profound sense of empowerment, as if I was finally seizing control of my own destiny—wherever it might lead me.

I always wonder what naoya would act like if he had a new born baby? Would he be very soft towards his child? Akxjjzsbizzjj my heart needs y/n and naoya fluff😭😭😭😭
HI ANON YES THANK YOU FOR THIS ASK AAAAHGHAHAHAGH you've come to the right place!! Literally, the more asks I get of Naoya and Y/N with their newborn baby the more ideas I get I want to write (doing one already, xmas themed, idc if I'm late lol)
Anyways, here is the good stuff you asked for 😏 warnings: none. just fluff.
I hope it's to your liking! Happy reading ❤️
Tumblr media
Naoya is obsessed with the baby as soon as you tell him you’re pregnant, and soon, his days are filled with nothing but the pregnancy: from wanting to know if you’re alright, if you’ve had any nausea, if there were any specific cravings that needed to be satisfied, or his all-time favorite—if the baby was kicking.
You’d have to remind him that it’s too early for that, but when it’s finally time, his hands never leave your stomach, whether asleep or fully awake; he always must always be touching you, he needs to—as if he wasn’t already highly overprotective of you!
So, one can only imagine how this escalates when the baby finally arrives. (I’m still going with the idea that their first child is a girl)
When Naomi is born, all that Naoya desires is to stay by her side, her being the first thing he sees in the morning and the last in the night.
Naoya wants to be there as soon as the baby wakes up, hear her adorable coos and gurgles which he somehow always understands, as well as selecting her clothes for the day (they have to match. Non-negotiable) feed her (although that’s more like accompanying you while doing so.) and on and so forth.
And although there is nothing he loves more than being with his baby, his favorite thing in the world is seeing you bond with her.
Naoya just… melts when he sees you gush at their daughter, talk to her in that baby voice that always makes Naomi giggle, the occasional pinch of her chubby cheeks (which he likes to say she got from you—you, of course, deny it.) or how you seem to take her wherever you go, unable to peel away from her, not even a second! As if doing so would cause your immediate death!
I don't think I'll be able to convey just how overprotective the two are with Naomi.
Like, you and Naoya would be the type of parents to overdress her as soon as temperature drops the slightest for the simple fear that she’d get sick or something—obviously this didn’t last long because the doctor (alongside family members) would immediately remind them that being this way is only detrimental in the long term.
Rest assured, you and Naoya would find a way to compensate for that, specifically through toys, and outings when she's a bit older. Weekly trips to Tokyo Disneyland become the norm by that point (hell, if Naoya truly wanted to, he'd take Naomi to each worldwide Disney Park on a weekly basis, if only she didn't get crampy by flights—and if that wasn’t too much, of course.) which again, had to be stopped thanks to your dad advising both to take it easy, or she'll grow spoiled… the wrong way, that is.
I think out of the two, Naoya is the one that would struggle the hardest to not buy every single thing that reminds him of Naomi. But can we blame him? The nature of his work often keeps him away from you and the baby, which makes him very, very sad and resentful that it does.
He literally tried to get some time off so he’d be able to stay with you and the baby… but he wasn’t able to get much; so, he looks for all possible ways to make up for his absence, as well as reassure her that his career is not more important than her, or that he isn’t trying hard enough to be there.
Because of this, you make your best effort for Naomi's first word to be papa; it might not be much, but it’s your way to reassure him that he’s a good father and that she loves him very, very much. (The one deciding to name their children after him is your idea, because you want Naoya to feel included, loved. Like he deserves a family after all that he went through 🥺)
Going back to Naomi’s first word, this feat is easier said than done, but you do your best either way, and when it finally happens…. Oh my god is Naoya over the moon.
He literally died when Naomi cheerfully yelled “papa!” upon seeing him return one day from a mission, with that toothy grin he loves so much and those chubby little hands reaching out for him that immediately melt away all his stresses and anxieties away.
And we haven't even spoken of nicknames yet!!! He already had the habit of calling you all kinds of pet names, and that, alongside his tendency to pinch your cheeks, is something that Naomi will also inherit from him.
He'd call her all kinds of cute things, however, his favorite ones are the ones he associates with you, but adding a small differentiation, for example:
“Princess” and “little princess”
“Little mochi” and “littlest mochi”—this one you tell Naoya not to use just because of how silly it sounds, not that it works but hey, you tried.
“Pumpkin” and “little pumpkin”—this one was mostly used by your dad, which Naoya later adopted upon finding out about it—and if you already felt embarrassed by it, this sentiment just grew when Naoya began to endlessly tease you with it.
But now that it’s being used on Naomi, you finally began to appreciate it and subsequently, find it adorable!
So, yes. Naoya loves his baby very, very much, for Naomi represents a combination of all the things that make him happy: you, his love for you, and now, a family.
He'd go above and beyond to make them happy and keep them safe; when it comes to this, the sky is the limit.
Tumblr media
wow ngl. I want to write more. ajgajgjsaajgkja specifically the "Naoya placing his hands over your stomach to feel the baby kicking" or how he'd react to tiring nights where baby Naomi just can't sleep 🥺 if anyone wants to indulge me by sending in an ask of what you'd like me to write, you know where to find me 😏
thank you for this lovely ask!! Take care and hope to see you soon ❤️❤️

The first key to successful undercover work is to believe you aren’t undercover.  To truly inhabit the persona you came up with, to reach for that instead of anything else when scared or angry.  To think of real life as a particularly lucid dream instead of reality.
After half a year undercover, Dick thinks he’s pretty much got the hang of it.  It helps that the cover is so close to a reality that-could've-been--sent to juvie after his parents were murdered, ran away from his foster family after presenting as omega, on the fringes of society, wandered to Bludhaven and ended up getting in after Wilson's First Son spotted him while bartending and offered him a better job.
Also helpful that the circus never kept actual records, Dick was marked down as 'John Doe' in juvie because he refused to speak to them, and Bruce created his legal identity practically out of thin air, so there are only a handful of people that know the name Dick Grayson in the first place.  A combination of boarding school out-of-state and distance from his rich, reclusive foster father meant that he has very little of an online social presence, which of course, makes Detective Richie Wayne a great candidate for a long-term undercover job with the Wilson Mob.
The other key to successful undercover work is to develop a finely honed sense of paranoia, and right now, all of Dick's detectors are on screaming alert.
"What?" he said, staring at Wintergreen's unsmiling face.  Usually he didn't question his orders, but usually he wasn't ordered to accompany Slade Wilson to an unspecified meeting.
Every time he was in touch with his handlers, he had to tell them that Wilson was both suspicious and not stupid, it was going to take time for Dick to get close to him, but Bludhaven PD was not known for its patience.
"I said, your job tonight will be accompanying Slade as his personal guard to a dinner meeting," Wintergreen repeated, looking annoyed.
"Why me?" Dick asked, unable to fully suppress the anxiety.  Luckily, he was expected to be anxious--Dick hadn't made himself out to be ambitious and he hadn't interacted much with the elder Wilson at all.
"He requested you personally.  I didn't care enough to ask why."
"Calm down, Dickie, my dad doesn't bite," Grant snickered, his arm casually looped around Dick's shoulders.  "I've told him how well you performed on the Bulgari job, maybe he just wants to see for himself."
Dick turned to give Grant a tremulous smile and wished it was that simple.  But Dick had felt Slade Wilson's eye following him around on more than one occasion, lingering on him when Grant made his reports, and giving him casual once-overs that Dick had no trouble recognizing.
The real reason Detective Richie Wayne was sent for this undercover mission--the department had few omega police officers, and fewer that corresponded to Slade Wilson's reported tastes.  Of course, they couldn't outright come out and tell him to prostitute himself to the East Coast's biggest mob boss to get them intel, but Dick wasn't naive.  The 'hints' had starting becoming more explicit as his handler got increasingly impatient.
And now the opportunity had landed in Dick's lap.
"That makes sense," Dick said, suppressing the tight ball of dread and shoving it down.  "I won't disappoint Mr. Wilson."
Grant scoffed at the thought and dragged Dick out to head to dinner.  Wintergreen didn't say anything, just continued to stare at Dick with that unnerving gaze until Dick was out of his office.
Dick, for his part, tried to remember how to breathe.

I put on one of my favorite records to help me focus, but I got distracted by reflections on my long-held belief that Rooster is one of the best expressions of empathy and healing your inner child that I've ever heard put to music. Let me explain. (Trigger warnings—some sensitive topics below cut (childhood neglect/abuse mentioned in a non-explicit way, non-explicit mention of combat related trauma, process of healing also discussed).
Jerry Cantrell wrote this song while placing himself in the shoes of his father, a Vietnam combat veteran. The trauma of Cantrell Sr.’s wartime experience contributed to him being a distant, cold partner and father, and this led to Jerry’s mother, Gloria, divorcing Cantrell Sr. and taking Jerry and his siblings away from the home for their safety and well-being. Jerry didn't spend much time with his father following the divorce, and resentment towards him grew.
Now, children are good at coming up with explanations for neglect and abuse. These explanations are usually miles away from the truth (for example - my Dad doesn't spend time with me because I'm a bad kid and I’m not worthy of his time). These explanations can then impact these children’s self-esteem, self-efficacy, and ability to form healthy attachments for the rest of their lives unless they take the time to acknowledge, deconstruct, and restructure them. I’ve heard horrendous things that have happened to children, told to me by people in their 80s who are still working to heal from these psychological wounds. And forgiveness is not the answer for everyone, despite what pop psychologists may spout.
It isn't necessary to forgive your abuser for you to find healing. It helps some individuals but isn't a requisite. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. The literature indicates understanding and self-awareness as more relevant and beneficial for a broader range of situations, which Jerry was working towards in “Rooster.” He was thinking, why was my father this way? He acknowledged Cantrell Sr.’s behavior towards him wasn't little Jerry’s fault. That there was nothing he could have done to change things and nothing he did made him deserving of what he experienced. He was 7 years old when they left his father. A baby. But these babies blame themselves. I've seen it countless times. So Jerry being able to sit down and work through what he experienced and the reasons why he experienced it and creating something so amazing in the process is truly incredible.
Important to note, gaining this understanding is not providing excuses for inexcusable behavior. It is instead about empowering oneself to finally let go of the misplaced guilt and shame that often accompany these types of experiences. To realize that you are not, at your core, rotten and deserving of bad things. Rather, you are a whole, multifaceted human being, capable of “good” decisions and actions (which don't make you an overall “good”) person, and “bad” decisions and actions (which don't make you an overall “bad” person) deserving of love, care, and respect from yourself and others.
So Jerry writes this song, gaining an understanding of his father’s traumas and how they contributed to his own childhood experience. He finds healing and reconnection through the process (again, reconnection and reconciliation are not always the goal). Then Layne sings the song. And he gains an understanding of Cantrell Sr.’s experience. The song becomes a hit, and millions of people around the world hear it. Many more find a sense of understanding and healing through it. Empathy is iterative. It spreads and heals, maybe not always to this extent. But if even one person can be positively impacted by being treated/ treating another with empathy and compassion, I think it's well worth it.

Hello again, dear. Hugs! It's Mum.
I am still so abuzz over what trouble your crew risked to come and see you! I am so relieved that things turned out for the better after all. Truth be told, I was awfully concerned that they would all end up arrested once the arguing broke out... oh, my. What a marvelous set of friends you have on your side. I could not be more overjoyed that they are still there to accompany you. And at last, we can say "fuck off!" and begone to those foul pills and too-bright lights, hah! I believe this was perhaps the morale boost we all needed, yeah?
(But I will admit— I am a touch saddened that they did not seem to have any memorable words about me... rather silly, I know. I was looking forward to meeting them once you all returned home. I know that Kestrel is just dying to talk to Daisuke again, haha! Ah, well. I am certainly no stranger to coming off as strange, but I do wish I could apologize.)
Do forgive me for the past several days as well, my dear. I do not know what has gotten into me so. It has been so long, I'd forgotten... so much that I thought had passed seems to have been wanting to rush back in, like a tidal wave. But, do not worry about me. I will be okay. As long as you and Kestrel are here, I will be okay. I promise.
Still... thank you anyway, sweet pea. Heh— you are always on about how kind and caring I am for you, but you forget that you are the one who inspired those feelings in the first place! You do not know the half of all that you have done for my heart, too.
You know, it's strange... the more I learn about Mom, the more lost at sea I feel— as though I, perhaps, never truly knew her at all... I cannot say that I enjoy the thought. In a way, it brings me back to when Dad left all over again. (Mom would have hated for me to say such a thing, I do know that much.) And as with him, I suppose I must make my peace with... whatever her reasons were. If she truly knew everything all along, somehow. No matter how much it may bother me that I will never know. I can only hope that you and Kestrel never have to feel this way about me...
... Do you recall when you had told me that you still feel like a child, at times...? As though you do not know anything at all, even after all of these years? I will let you in on a secret, darling. I feel that way very, very much myself. Like I am still that nineteen year old girl in way over her head. In truth, I have never stopped feeling this way, even as my body has aged... I remember being so lost after Mom passed, and Kestrel had flown the coop to pursue his education. All that I wished for in those days was to go back to a time when I could climb onto the couch in between Mom and Dad and let the world fall away, knowing that everything would still be okay.
Sometimes, though, I am still able to touch upon that childlike serenity, however fleeting... most often whenever I held Kestrel. And when I could dance. Occasionally it will find me on my back porch as I watch the birds flittering about... and more recently, when I am there in the evenings, looking up to the night sky— to my precious starlings— and I think of you in my arms. Home, safe, and well. And I am reassured that even when things are not okay, that they will be again soon. ♡
Mum! Hey! Hugs to you!
Jeez. Didn't even think of that. Friends, huh... God, yeah, it's much better without those damn pills and with the light cover. Always fun hearing you swear, hah. And absolutely.
...If I'm being real, uh, they... did mention you. Anya wanted to show Swansea and Daisuke the, uh... eye dilation thing. I think she mentioned that to you all. Didn't want to bring that up since, y'know, they were teasing me. Sorry! Is he really? Daisuke would be thrilled to know that, I bet. Mum, hey, no. You've got absolutely nothing to apologize for. No one said a bad word about you.
Forgive? For what??? You haven't done anything wrong at all. C'mon, don't tell me not to worry. If I can do anything to help, I will. Is this about, uh, that plush you found?
Hey, it's no trouble. Least I could do. Because you are! Well, you're the one who— What do you even mean by that?? They're still your feelings! Hah.
Mm. I think that's natural, yeah? Part of growing up is realizing our parents had whole lives outside us... I do understand where you're coming from, though. Can't imagine how emotional it is for you. And you're allowed to feel however you need to, obviously. I, uh... Death was telling me about her again a while back. Not sure if you heard. She said something about, uh, seeing fragments of the future. So, y'know, maybe she saw more of the good than the bad...? Or maybe there's some sort of rule about paradoxes if you tell someone too much about their future— Rambling, I'm sorry. Hang in there, yeah? Got no doubt this is beyond hard to process.
I remember, sure. Hah. You remember when you were a kid and adults would say that there wasn't a switch? You don't wake up one day feeling an adult— just the same as you've always been? I never really believed them, but... Maybe we're all in the same boat here. Or maybe you and I are the odd ones out. ...I'm sorry. I know how it is to be alone. You're not alone now, yeah? I'm here... I know I'm not there with you, but I'm here for you. Whatever you need.
That sounds nice... Really?? Hah... That's really nice. I think I needed to hear that too.
...
Hey, Daisuke just came in. Morning, kid. I think.
