summary // The band might have considered more than once of ‘entertaining’ their best friend. After their I wanna be your slave video comes out, sweet ol’ Thomas can not help but suggest they encounter their reacting to the video clip and showing them some of their moves.

Thomas’ idea did not just come out of the blue. It was not a spontaneous thing to do, but a long time formulated thought coming into reality. In all honesty, Thomas, Victoria, Ethan and Damiano had thought about it before, plenty of times. Having Y/N stay with them any time they were at the studio house was flaring up these thoughts like crazy. It was not just one time that the four of them had talked about railing them senseless initiating something more sexual with them, only the fear that they would be pushed away, keeping them from making a move. But after having seen the anticipation from the promotion for theri video clip of I wanna be your slave, Thomas went out on a limp making a move for them all after the video dropped.

“Hey, Y/N, what are you up to?” There were no regards as to whether it was ok to get in or not. The man just sat on the bed, a phone in his hand with it’s screen lit up already.

“Not much, Thomas. I was just finishing some things up on my laptop. What are you guys doing here, all together?” It was not common for all of them to be in the room at once. Usually they only were all together in the living room or outside, the time in any bedrooms spent with two or three at the time and late at night when they couldn't sleep.

By now the other three occupied the small room, sitting anywhere they could: a chair on the desk, on top of said desk, the bed. “We were thinking, cucciolo.” The one to speak up now was Ethan, sitting on their other side, hand in their hair, messing with it just like he always did.

“Our video clip is out and we wanted to see your reaction.”

“I told you guys I’ll watch it when I’m done with the assignments-”

“Did you not just say you’re done?” Damiano had a sneaky smirk on his face, seeing how flushed he made the band’s friend, getting caught in excuses.

Maybe I just don’t want to see it around you, they thought, avoiding to speak, instead nodding their head.

“Then let’s watch it, puppy.” This time it was Victoria’s chance to speak up, taunting the poor person on the bed. The blonde was on the other side of the room but it did not stop her from making Y/N flush in their seat, only fueling her desire to film the up and coming reactions.

Before the video started everyone shifted. Damiano and Ethan were on the right side of Y/N, Thomas and Victoria occupying the left, all within reach of the poor puppy in the middle. They all knew how quickly they’d react to it all, squirming in their seat at the thought of Vic tasting them like a candied apple. “Do you like it, puppy? Want me to tease you like that?” said girl questioned, never weavering from the filming

It seemed like every little thought was simply worse than the previous, the tip of the iceberg being Victoria tied up, all so wonderfully. Such a sight for sore eyes. At it Y/N let out a strained gasp, unable to hold it in.”What is it, cucciolo, you want to be tied like that? I can do it for you,” whispered Ethan, hands quick to tie up Y/N’s with a shoelace he found a few minutes ago. It was not tight but it was enough to restrain their arms behind them.

“So good you are,” he praised, placing his hand in their hair, giving space for Damiano to put his on their thigh.

The video went on, all these scenes with Damiano screaming at everyone’s face simply heightened the already extreme emotions Y/N was experiencing. The man himself could only laugh at that, face coming close to theirs, just like he did for Thomas on the video clip, so assertive, dominating even.

“Are you enjoying yourself, puppet?” His words pierced through them, shivers overtaking their body, a feeling that could only be described as anxiety but also excitement accompanying it.

It was all a dream, or it felt like it. Such situation was too good to be true for Y/N, causing the fear of this being just a very realistic dream. But, Thomas’ kisses on their neck and Ethan’s light tugs on their hair reminded them of the reality they were living inside of. “Use your words, bambino,” said Damiano, the same smirk as before all over his face.

“Yes, I enjoy this,” they finally whispered, words forced out.

The next few seconds were quiet, only facial expressions portraying any reaction, all four of the band members just looking, admiring their beautiful friend and silently agreeing on their next move. It was when they saw Damiano and Ethan kiss and share that pink bubble gum that the band got entertained. Their lips got parted, cheeks flushed to the point of ‘burning’ to the touch, their eyes got wide, all but drooling over the scene unfolding in front of their eyes.

A shock wave shot through Y/N’s body as Ethan grabbed their head, tilting it back, the video clip still in the background, attacking their lips in a hungry kiss. It was hot, wet and sloppy, and it went on for a bit, until the tall drummer ushered his tongue into the mix, allowing the same type of cherry bubble gum from the video clip to move in Y/N’s mouth at once. They did not know what to do, their mind utterly blank and unable to decide on an action.

“Bite it.” Thomas let the two words out of his mouth, straight into their ear. He looked so shy and innocent most of the time, who would have thought he had it in him. “Now move your head, puppy, just like that,” he all but moaned, pulling them back towards him.

“So good for us all,” Thomas spoke again, now him being the one to kiss Y/N, ridding their mouth of the gum and leaving sloppy kisses from their lips to their neck.

Victoria was fed up with how long the escalation was taking, unable to wait a minute longer before she could have her second of fun. With that thought in mind, she pulled the phone from Y/N’s hands, shutting it off and setting it on the nightstand.

“You already know what happens after, pet.” Her voice was more demanding than anyone could anticipate, very bossy one could say, but Y/N was not going to be the one to challenge it.

“Tell me if you are uncomfortable, baby.” Y/N let out a small ‘do it’, opening up their mouth and just waiting, caressing Victoria’s hands on their face.

“Such a good pet,” she praised, going ahead to spit in their mouth before assessing her ‘art��.

“I think we need another ‘rehearsal’ to get it right,” smirked Damiano, “there’s just a few more creative touches we need to add.”

a/n: this is a kofi commission for my lovely @bunnyywritings​, in my time on here i’ve not written for shoji all that much so i had a really fun time doing so! thank you for your donation and helping me get back into my longer form writing groove. i hope you enjoy, you’re the best 🥺💗 

Once your final college semester had started, something you could always find small ounces of joy in would be finding new spots to study in. No longer would you allow yourself to be stuck in the confines of your room or the library, instead opting for somewhere a bit more scenic.

Which is where your new regular coffee shop came in. It had always been a place you would pass between lectures, but it had never crossed your mind to actually make your way inside and try it out. The days of filling your flask with whatever instant coffee you could find had become routine to you at this point, so what would there be to offer in a place like that?

Turns out, it’s a lot more than you had initially expected. The shop is almost always quiet, those who enter usually taking their orders to go — assuming they’re making their way to classes as soon as their orders are in their hands. You, however, were given the opportunity to experience the atmosphere that came with it. 

Somehow, even on the coldest of days, it radiates warmth. The soft music playing in between the sounds of the espresso machine almost therapeutic, allowing your mind wander amongst writing your papers or organising your notes. 

The coffee itself was also incredible, finding yourself all the more tempted to treat yourself to new and exciting drinks whenever you got a look at the menu. It was like you were rewarding yourself for the work you were going to do, which did wonders for your motivation. 

Not to mention, the guy behind the counter was someone you’d taken a decent amount of interest in after you met him for the first time. 

Even with studying a standard degree, there were those training to become pro heroes amongst the rest of the student body. It was always an option when they were in high school, you had come to learn, that they were able to have the opportunity for a degree before going out into the world of hero work — assuming they’d want to take on more roles in theri agencies or just have proper qualifications on top of it. 

One of those people was Mezo Shoji. Usually, he was the one making the drinks for waiting customers. That being because his quirk can certainly come in handy when it comes to working in a fast paced environment. Dupli-arms, you’re sure it was called. 

See, Shoji could have 5 orders made in the time it would take another to make a single one, putting each of his hands to good use and whipping up everything perfectly. Those who had never seen a quirk bearer before were fascinated by him, yourself included. 

Although, you had come to learn a lot about Shoji in the time you frequented the spot. Every study session you took there, he was ready to make your order in a few seconds flat. He was always incredibly polite, personable and kind. 

In fact, once he even gave you a free pastry upon finding out you were there to look over your final paper — worth quite a lot in your final grade. Even with the short bursts of conversations you had with him, it was almost too easy to take an interest in him. 

Which you decided one day to take in your stride and act on. 

Upon entering the shop, the bell rang above the door as usual. Shoji was unexpectedly on the register, giving you a wave as you approached. 

“Welcome back” he greets, somehow knowing he’s smiling from behind his mask as you stop in front of the counter. “How did the exam go?”. 

You smile realising that he remembered, mainly since you had complained to him about it a few days prior. Letting out a small sigh, you already dig through your bag for your card, aware that he knows what you’ll order with how often you now frequent there. 

“It went okay, the last question stumped me a bit but hopefully it’ll get me to my desired grade” you explain, watching as he nods along before grabbing you a to go cup. That’s odd you think to yourself, to go cups are for people who leave after it’s ready. Furrowing your brows at the gesture, he speaks again before you have time to ask. 

“I was wondering…” he starts, not looking up from writing your name on the cup. “I’m about to go on my lunch break, would you want to maybe hang out for a while? Only if you’re free, of course”. It knocks you briefly, having never heard him be so bold before. The two of you have only ever really interacted when he’s at work, so spending time with him outside of that would be something entirely new.

Though, there’s no part of you that wants to deny him. As much as you were interested in Shoji, you had always assumed he was being polite since you were always a customer. If only you had known, however, that he had practically begged his friend Tokoyami, who usually works the counter if they could switch in hoping to properly ask you out. 

Of course, his friends are a reflection of him in their kindness — and would never want him to miss out on someone they’ve heard him ramble on about the second the bell would indicate your exit. 

Giving him a nod, you hand over your card at the same time to pay for your drink. “I think I’d like that a lot” you tell him honestly, once again able to sense him smiling. He gives you a nod, getting to work on your drink as you stand by the waiting area. 

You’re not kept long however, Shoji proving his stellar work as always by being ready to go in not even a few minutes. With his apron discarded and a coffee for himself in hand, he hands your drink over to your waiting hands before letting you lead him outside. 

“So, what have you got planned for me then?” you ask him, tone a little teasing - enjoying the reaction you get when you notice the tips of his ears have started to redden. 

“I was thinking we should take a walk around campus, is there a place other than the science building that has a pretty good bakery?” he offers, hoping it at least isn’t too obvious that he’s thought his plan of action through many times already. 

“As long as you let me buy you something, what with how you sneak me pastries enough already” you tell him with a laugh, getting the same in response from him. With that, you were on your way. The conversation between you both feels so much more personal as you venture across the grounds, able to properly get to know Shoji over more than just his caffeine preferences. 

Allowing you to keep your word, you pick out a few things for the both of you to try out. He wasn’t wrong with the quality of the treats, even going so far as making him promise you’ll both go there again once exams were over. 

As you sat down on one of the benches outside, Shoji stuck close to you in watching your reaction to each new thing. It made him laugh, seeing the way your eyes lit up in sheer wonder. With the growing confidence he had, you were even offered to feed him a piece of what you had. 

Accepting immediately, you were a little surprised to see him so willing to pull down his mask for you. Him doing so in turn made you feel special, knowing that meant he was so trusting of you. It was your turn to watch him enjoy the pastry this time, smiling to yourself as his reaction mirrors yours.

“Something wrong?” he asks you a moment later, having assumed his appearance may have startled you. When you rapidly shake your head in response, it helps to reassure him. “No, no! I uh-”. 

Holding eye contact with him suddenly became difficult, eyes going to your shoes as he fixed his mask back over his face. “I just think you’re handsome, you know… with our without the mask”. Your confession got you a similar reaction to earlier, the tips of his ears going that now signature red hue. 

The two of you shared a laugh then, going back into the normal flow of conversation a mere moment later. Shoji would tell you another time, he had decided, but you made him feel a lot better about himself at that moment. 

Time passed quickly before either of you noticed, the sky getting darker as you started your walk back to your dorm. Neither of you mention it when his hand finds yours then, fingers lacing through yours with ease. You had always had a liking for his hands, enjoying the momentary flustering once more when you tell him as much. 

With hearts and stomachs full, Shoji stops you before you’re able to head on your way — with a proposition. “You know, I’d love to do this again sometime...” he tells you, looking down at you and catching his eyes crinkle as he smiles. “I don’t know how obvious it is, but I — really like you...”

A date. Shoji is asking you out on a date. He was shy at that moment, hoping he hadn’t gotten the wrong idea and that you would like to spend some time together again. 

The peck you give his cheek, right above his mask no less, is what reassures him. Waving you off as you head through the main doors of your building, he’s then walking home with a head swimming in ideas of where to take you next. 

Maybe next time, he won’t even wear his mask around you — or make sure he has the courage to make you as happy as you did him.

Why doesn’t Yu use the Wild Card in the Arena series?

I mean we know the gameplay reason, weilding multiple Personas is a bit much for the typical shotoclone character and that kind of stuff was reserved for Margaret. But I want an in-story explaination that’s better than them just changing it to a “Power of Friendship” boost.

My personal theory is that the TV World and pseudo-Dark Hour made via Shadow Labrys and Hino Kagutsuchi have altered properties compared to the standard TV World. Much like how the Midnight Stage in DAN had different properties so the Personas could only do cool solos instead of fight. And the villains altering it so Yu can’t use his Wild Card at full capacity makes sense, clip the wings of one of your biggest threats.

My other idea was that Yu was holding back during all of Arena by usng only Izanagi b/c he didn’t want to hurt his friends/real people, but that theory goes out the window when you get to Ultimax and you fight nothing but fake Shadow Doppelgangers, so he’d have no reason to hold back.

One last thing:

According to Adachi, Sho Minazuki is an actual highly-trained fighter, whereas the Investigation Team were unrefined with no proper technique when he fought them. This most likely includes Yu, and as I have said before, the IT had to have gone into the TV World only 12 times overall during P4′s story since they lack a reason to go in there all the time in story like S.E.E.S. and the Phantom Thieves (Explore Tartarus and Mementos), and they’ve only gone in about 9 times prior to Adachi’s boss fight. However, in the True Ending, Yu faces Sho with all of Minazuki's capability merged in (split personality merge, long story), and fights him to a standstill. My thery is that Yu, via his Wild Card, wanted to “bond” with Sho via fighting as that is how Sho is, and the Wild Card/Power of persona, which can change based on what the user desires (like how in DAN they did the cool solos b/c they wanted to communicate their feelings via music), boosted Yu’s combat abilities to match Sho’s so he could communicate those feelings.

It’d be cool if this was done via syncing with Sho’s Wild Card, which he does/probabaly have/has since he denied a contract with the Velvet Room. Possibly this does result in Sho’s equivalent to Akechi’s Robin Hood (I do like the theory that Loki represents his corrupt bond with Shido compared to Robin Hood being his much healthier bond with Joker).

Speaking of Akechi have you guys noticed that both Sho’s Tsukiyomi and Akechi’s Loki both have blakc and white stripped bodies?

is Black and White stripes just a thing for a corrupt Wild Card’s Persona?

Also I just noticed the horns, the flowing bits (Tsukiyomi’s cloak and Loki’s Pony tails), the single swords.

My top 8 movies of 2020 (and a bonus)

Hey kids! Its that time again! That day you`ve all been waiting for, when I talk about the movies I`ve seen in the cinema and rank them according to my own personal taste and bias!

But since Corona is still a thing and I like to play it safe there was no going to the cinema for me this year either. So this is more of a "The movies that I planned to see in cinema in 2020 but watched on DVD instead" list. Trolls world tour, I am Greta and Soul were originally not on my list but I decided to include them since thery were made in 2020 and I did get to watch them. There are two movies that I had on my list but didn`t find: Wonder Woman 1984 and New Mutants. If I find them I will either edit this list to include them or write some addendum.

And now... here are the movies.

8: Scoob! It has pacing issues in the beginning, which is fixed (and by "fixed" I mean "made worse") by clunky exposition, characters that could have been interesting take a backseat to reference humor that may work well with kids today but not so much with anyone over the age of 8. There are scenes that wants to feel important and emotional but just feel forced. There are some good ideas here that are unfortunately buried in bad execution. I wanted this movie to be better. It had one of my favorite tropes in it: guy disguises himself as attractive woman in a super-realistic mask. A Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe sounds like a fun idea but this ain`t how you start building it. It`s barely even a good crossover.

7: Trolls world tour The musical trolls return, now with some worldbuilding. We find out that there are more trolls in the world and more kinds of music. There`s techno, classical, funk, country and ROCK (Hells yeah!) And since Black Panther and Frozen 2 did the "your ancestors did a bad thing" trope this movie does it as well. I don`t really get why they made the rock trolls the bad guys since rock is the objectively better music and Queen Barb has a few scenes where she says some things that sound more level headed and reasonable than Queen Poppy`s wellmeaning but unrealistically optimistic philosphy. But maybe I`m biased since I`m over 30 and therefore have better taste in music than this movie`s target audience. Oh well, atleast it was entertaining. About as good as I expected.

6: Sonic the hedgehog Yes, I prefer the look Sonic has in the finished movie much more than that "realistic" look he had in the trailers. But what about the rest of the movie? The plot? The characters? It`s an OK movie. The idea of Sonic coming to our world feels like something from the plot of a movie from the mid 80s or early 90s. Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik was an... interesting and unexpected casting choice to say the least, but it kept the movie entertaining. It was a real joy to see Jim Carrey bring back his old school style of humor. Not as bad as I had feared, not as good as I had wanted it to be but as good as I expected.

5: Onward Two teenage elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot, go on a journey to find a magical artifact that will let them bring back their late father for one day. Pixar has set such a high standard over the years so that when something comes out that is good but not great it is often seen as a disappointment. Onward is not the next Toy Story, Ratatuille or inside out, but it is one of their modest good ones. I question the descision to have it take place in a modern, urban fantasy world and wonder if it couldn`t have gone more full on fantasy, but that`s just me nitpicking. It has heart, humour, likeable characters and it gave me the feels in places where it felt earned. This is one of Pixar`s better movies that are worth a watch.

4: Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn Feels like DC`s answer to Deadpool with it`s R-rated violence and reckless humour. If I may put on my Comicbook purist goggles and nitpick a little I think Ella Jay Basco should have played an original character instead of Cassandra Cain. But despite that minor little nitpick this movie has a lot going for it. I know I had fun watching it.

3: Jojo Rabbit Yes, I know, I`m recycling myself here, but I did watch this in 2020 so it counts. Just when you think that we have made all the movies we can about WWII this movie shows that there are still are a few angles left that we haven`t tried. Important, serious and funny.

2: I am Greta A documentary following Greta Thunberg from her schoolstrike outside the riksdag to her speech at the united nations. It gives you a little insight into who Greta is as a person. Even if Greta is just a messenger and we should pay more attention to the message, we understand important things better when we can put a human face on it.

Now, before I get to my number 1 movie, here`s my honorable mention!

Honorable mention: Raya and the last dragon I wanted to have this one on this list since it was technically made in 2020, but it`s release was delayed to 2021. A common criticism against this movie is that it isn`t very original. Neither is Star Wars: A new hope (Which was based on Akira Kurosawa`s the hidden castle.) or Toy Story. (Which borrows a lot from Jim Henson`s The Christmas Toy.) So, saying that this movie is not original is really the weakest form of criticism you can come up with. Another criticism against this movie is that it sends the message that you should constantly forgive the person who repeatedly stabs you in the back. Personally I see that this movie is trying to frame the narrative as if Namaari and Raya have wronged each other equally when really Namaari is the bigger bad guy here. That aside, I like Namaari as a character. She feels three dimensional and I buy her character development. Raya and Sisu are also likeable and add some conflict of ideologies to the dialogue. Tong, Boun and Noi are also fun but are not as well developed as the previously mentioned characters. It would have been nice if it had been a little longer,  just a few minutes for more character development, and if Namaari had a little moment of selfreflection. If I could place it on this list I would say that it`s better than Sonic but not as good as Onward. And so, with that out of the way...

My pick for the number one movie of 2020...

will come up after I talk about one movie I did see in the cinema this year. You see, my mom had collected a bunch of points, from shopping at a place, that allowed her to see any movie she wanted this year. It was basically a free movie ticket for her, me and my brother. The cinema was full, I wished they could have enforced some restrictions and only allowed a half-full movie salon, fortunately I was vaccinated and they encouraged hand sanitizing. And so... Drumroll please. The one movie I saw in the cinema in 2021 was...

No time to die First time I`ve seen a Daniel Craig Bond movie and the first time I`ve seen a Bond movie in the cinema. In a way this reminds me of On her Majesty`s secret service because like that movie, this one adds something to the Bond formula, a few things that I didn`t expect that shakes things up a bit. Not really the typical Bond movie but as good as a Bond movie should be.

And so... with that out of the way... Drumroll please. My number one movie of 2020 iiis...

1: Soul Seems that I can`t make these lists without putting an animated movie that made me cry at the number one spot. So yeah. Soul is really good. It gives you the feels AND the thinks. One scene that has stayed with me since I saw it is one where a character tells a short story about a fish who couldn`t find the ocean because of all the water. Inside out said someting about life by telling a story about being human, Soul says something about what it`s like being human by telling a story about life.

Netflix Death Note 2/10

I watched this POS. I watched all of it. I forced a friend to watch it with me because I couldn’t go through it alone.

I couldn’t go more than 5 minutes without pausing it to sCREAm at how poorly it captured the original. I dented my wall guys. I became so enraged seeing one of my favorite series brought this low. It destroyed its source material and left behind the worst adaptation yet of Death Note and just an all around poor quality film. If you haven’t seen Death Note and are afraid of spoiling the source material with this film, don’t worry! Maybe 7% is the same. Maybe. However, there will be spoilers below.

Oh Boy. It was hard to get through. There as just so much wrong with it. Light’s a little bitch. Ryuk is barely there. Misa, aka Mia, is one of the most unlikable charterers I have seen in a long time. Granted, I didn’t care much for Misa Misa in the manga, but Mia took it from indifference to strong dislike. Mr. Turner (Light’s dad in this version. I can’t recall a first name) is such an unlikable man. Also, a plot point is that Light’s mom is dead and he doesn’t have a sister so you know right there that the whole Mellow arc is basically scrapped.

Now I know that this was an “adaptation” of the manga, and an Americanized version. There may have been a few too many creative liberties used because almost nothing followed the source material. It seemed more like a bad high school drama than Death Note. Hell, an important scene takes place at a homecoming dance. Light Yagami (Turner) at a homecoming dance. Talking about the Death Note in BROAD FUCKING DAYLIGHT.

After watching the film I made a comment to my friend that you could have taken out Ryuk from the film and it wouldn’t have changed the plot one bit. Except we would have been spared the scene of Light shrieking in fear and cowering under a desk. If you’ve made a Death Note adaptation that could easily remove the shinigami and nothing would be different, you know that you messed up right there.

Speaking of Ryuk, he is an odd presence in the film. He is no longer bound to the owner of the death note, instead it seems like he comes and goes while he pleases. Also, now he can only be seen by the owner of the death note, not just anyone who touches it. Thus Misa (Mia) can never see or talk to him throughout the film, which leads to some odd exchanges. Unlike the manga Ryuk, this one never goes in to the boredom speech. Remember when Light asks what he did to receive such a great power and Ryuk tells him it was just dumb luck that he picked it up, Ryuk just dropped it because he was bored? Yeah, there was none of that. There isn’t the scene of Ryuk telling Light that if he uses the death note that he won’t go to heaven or hell, and that Ryuk will be the one to kill him in the end. I always liked that scene in the manga, it gave Light’s choices more weight.  Ryuk honestly... doesn’t do much at all. He eats some apples, that’s pretty neat. Ummm... he has a nice line at the very end of the film... I think that’s it, asides from Light screaming or threatening him a few times.

Which really bothered me. Like, REALLY bothered me. This movie screws up shinigami death, along with a lot of the rules of the death note. Light tells Ryuk he’ll write his name down in the death note, and Ryuk just tells him “the most anyone ever got was two letters.” You can’t kill a shinigami by just writing their name down. There’s only a handful of beings that know how to kill one, two of them being Ryuk and Rem, who isn’t in the film at all. Yes, a shinigami can die if thery forget to put names down, but a way to kill one is by having a shinigami extend the life of a human they care for when that human’s life was supposed to be up. Rem’s friend does this for Misa Misa and then brings her his death note per his request. Not like any of that comes up in this film. Misa (Mia) never gets a death note, never becomes the second kira, and never gets there eyes. Because oh yeah, something key like the shinigami eyes and this girl being so in love she quarters her life span for a guy doesn’t make it in to this film.

A few other rules are off though, such as the way ownership works. The film makes it no longer Ryuk’s death note and has a scene about how it will pass from human to human (I don’t remember the specifics and I’m not about to watch it again) after a certain amount of days. I also do not think the owner loses their memory. There’s also this odd clause that if you write a name down but later destroy the page before it happens the death will be cancelled. But you can only do this once. This becomes a major plot point for the film when it isn’t at all in the manga (that I recall. Feel free to correct me on this.) Also, you apparently don’t need the right names because Light fucking writes down Watari as fucking Watari AND IT WORKS. WHAT. WHAT THE FUCK. WHY?

This is getting very long winded because I have a lot of rage, so I’m going to break this down by issues I had with each character and how off they were from their manga counterparts.

L - I’ll start of positive. For the most part, I liked L. The actor was much better than his rival, and made L seem human. His performance was a highlight. My main issue with L was the weird limo scene with some odd neon shades and asking Watari to sing him to sleep. It also upset me that he showed his actual face in a press junket. They focused more on his candy than how brilliant L actually is. Both he and Light don’t seem to be anywhere near as intelligent as they should be. In the film there is scenes of L coping with the loss of a friend that wasn’t in the manga since L and Watari die at about the same time. It was actually nice to see and made L seem a little more warm and human.

Watari - Good actor, gave a good performance. Odd casting choice in my opinion? Watari was one of the few Japanese actors in the cast when he’s playing the only non Japanese character. Watari was an old English gentleman. His name is Quillish Whammy for fuck’s sake. The actor gave the roll a good go, unfortunately it was just written poorly and most of his scenes take place at what looks like an old horror movie set.

Ryuk - I already touched on Ryuk previously. The VA did a fine job, he actually looked pretty decent. Sadly, his lines are all pretty worthless and for the most part he just makes Light nearly piss himself when he shows up.

Mr. Yagami (Mr. Turner) - This man is such a fuck. I disliked him so much. I really respected Yagami in the manga. He made tough decisions and was ready to do what he must to catch Kira. In fact, he quits the police force in near disgrace to fight Kira. That scene where he asks L to confine him as well because his son is confined in suspicion of being Kira? That scene where he is prepared to shoot his son and then himself? His father trading for the eyes but never using the death note on Mellow because he still wants to redeem him? Yagami being a good, developed character? Yeah, none of that. Instead we got tense conversations between him and Light because they don’t like each other. We get him choking L out at a family dinner because L says Light is Kira and Yagami abandoning L to protect his son at all costs. He even finds out his son is for a fact Kira and does nothing. 

Misa Misa Amane (Mia) - Boy did I dislike Misa in this film. The first scene is her being a cheerleader but being too “over life” to do the cheers? God, she is such an unlikeable, uncharasmatic bitch in this film. That’s such a big change from bratty but cute and bubbly superstar model Misa Misa. The actress had very little charm in her delivery. A lot of her scenes were of her trying to convince Light to kill more. A lot of them. Most of her scenes in the later half of the movie. She seemed to be going for a Harley Quinn vibe, complete with a “normal people scare me” hung up in her locker. Misa steals pages from the death note (since she doesn’t have her own) and sneaks behind Light’s back to kill the FBI agents trailing them. She also writes Light’s name down in the death note, to try and gain ownership of it. It honestly seemed like Light and Misa’s personalities were switched from what they were in the manga. Maybe it was to try and make her a strong female character, but it fell flat. What I found was one of the major characteristics of manga Mia was that she loved Light. She would do anything for Light, such as trading for the eyes twice or giving up her death note and memories when Light asks her to. This Misa seems to care much less for Light and more about the death note and killing. It doesn’t make her endearing to the audience, I don’t know what they were trying to do with her.

Light Yagami (Light Turner) - Where to begin. The acting was quite weak. The boy can scream and cry and beg, that’s for sure. However, he’s playing Light. There should have been no need for any of that. If only. I think what upset me most was that this film didn’t make Light seem smart. He does people’s tests for them at school and... that’s it. That’s where you’re supposed to infer that he’s a brilliant top of his class, getting primed for great things. Film version Light isn’t liked at school where as manga Light isn’t super popular, but he has friends. He has girls ask him out a few times. There’s some dialogue between Ryuk and Light about how popular he is with the ladies. Whereas Film Light is pretty much alone except for deranged Misa. There’s also no secrecy about the death note. He fucking has it in his lap during gym class, just chilling there. Misa asks what it is and he shows her how to use it. Just like that. They talk about it and killing people constantly out in public or in classes. It’s so unrealistic. Light doesn’t try to hide anything. On his first time meeting L he confesses to being Kira, just like that. He confesses it to his dad later on as well. He has a few exchanges with Misa about how much he wants to give up the death note and run way together because he loves her. After all, there was a montage of them making out while writing down names, it’s true love. The climax of the movie has Light writing down “if Misa takes the note book from me she will die” and Light telling her “it’s the notebook or me.” She chooses the notebook and you see him sob “I never thought you would take it!! I thought you loved me!!” and it’s so very manga Misa Misa. Light acts like the worst parts of manga Misa. He’s always ready to just give up and cry under a desk. The only good thing he does in this film is kill Misa.

One of the brilliant things Death Notes does is it challenged the reader about what is truly good and evil. Reading it for the first time I remember siding with Light up until he makes the jump to killing anyone after him. Then I was with L and the SPK. But then L dies. The leader of the “good side” dies and Light has his iconic “I win” panel. The whole world turns to Kira in support, and the reader does once again. He won out, he must be the good force after all. Then Near and Mellow show up and once again the reader is unsure of who to support. Mellow uses such underhanded tactics and causes Mr. Yagami’s death so he can’t be good. Near was a little kid so by virtue he had to be good, although personally I dislike Near. L and Mellow grew on me, Near didn’t. At this point Kira can’t be attributed solely to Light as he has Mikami and Misa working for him, but Kira is the bad guy again to the reader. The reader is thrown back and forth with who they support as things develop, but the characters themselves still fully believe that they all are what is good. The side of justice. The SPK thinks that they are in the right by bringing Kira down. Kira thinks that he is right by serving out justice and acting as god. It makes the reader really, really question what they think about right and wrong.

This movie version stripped that away. I never got the feeling that Light believes he is actually doing the right thing. He constantly is questioning their actions and wanting to stop. The viewer never thinks Light is in the right for a second, the viewer never wants him to win. You never have to question is Kira’s justice right or wrong.

I think what sums it up better than I could is the difference between these two scenes (Please note I do not have my copy of the book on hand and I’m not rewatching the film so this is from memory. Words may not be exact but the overall sentence is). In the manga Light comments “They have chosen to call him Kira. I don’t particularly like it as it sounds similar to the American word for killer, which is not what Kira does, he is justice.” In the film, Light states “I chose the name Kira because it’s close to the Japanese word for killer.” There ya go. Light chooses (CHOOSES) the name Kira because it sounds like a nice edgy name that is a word for murderer, which Light views himself as.

Bottom line, don’t watch it unless you too want to be upset. L, Watari, sometimes Ryuk, and the plethora of awful snapchat stickers my friend and I got were the highlights.
