Oh my god please drop more cod lore if you want to this is so interesting i didn't even know it had a plot i thought you just shot people this is actually extremely cool
I am unironically having a panic attack bc I want to do a cod lore deep dive video SO badly but it's setting off every single one of my insecurities about Creating and What I Want To Do With My Life anyway it's funny you say this bc cod games DID used to just be "shoot people" and this was actually why medal of honour was beating its ass because medal of honour had like storytelling. And then call of duty 4 modern warfare dropped and it had a PLOT it had CHARACTERS it took you on a CHARACTER ARC it had a whole mini-level where you don't shoot anyone and just wander the aftermath of a nuclear explosion.
And then modern warfare 2 said "hold my beer" and made a plot that was absolutely off the fucking shits in terms of scale, drama, and emotion. MW2 is partially so well remembered and beloved because the plot twist in the 3rd to last mission is so fucking BATSHIT for a franchise that up until that moment had no idea what storytelling was. (It also has. Uh. No Russian. Which is... well... No Russian. Possibly the most controversial video game level in history, but also very effective as a narrative device.)
Anyway, because of this FPS games and ESECIALLY cod games changed. A lot. Story was the exception not the norm in fps prior to mw1. Every cod game after that had plot. Black Ops - the next cod title after modern warfare 2 - had an even BETTER plot twist imo I LOVE what black ops does where it literally uses your expectations of a call of duty game against you to craft a mindfuck narrative. I still enjoy the mw2 narrative more just because it's very Hollywood, it's more emotional, and the violence is very removed from reality whereas black ops begins the trend of Realism And Torture. Like I think black ops has a better plot twist, but modern warfare has the better overall story

Ghost
Pretends he doesn’t care about the age gap, but he secretly does.
You’d never know it, but he worries that he’s roping you into a relationship – a long-term one at that – when you should be out, meeting guys, gaining life experience.
He also fears that, in some way, he’s corrupting you, that his selfish desire to keep you close to him will lead to you being targeted or you eventually resenting him.
It doesn’t matter how many times you tell him otherwise, he’s still going to worry about you.
There are a few ways you can put his mind at ease, though. Namely of the bedroom variety.
More on this later 👀.
He spoils you silly, absolutely rotten. Anything that catches that pretty little eye of yours and he’s already got it gift wrapped. He feels it’s the least he can do after you’ve shown  him that life isn’t just an endless cycle of suffering – an infinitum of anguish – that he does deserve happiness and a chance at love.
Very gentle during sex. Unless you ask him not to be.
Expect a lot of praise in bed.
Many a night have you found yourself pinned under Simon, his mouth to your ear as he pants, moaning, telling you how you’re “Such a good girl, taking me so well,” while he fills you with long, languid strokes.
Other times, he’s not so gentle.
Oftentimes, usually as a result of purposefully making Ghost jealous, have you been pinned against a hard surface – one of convenience rather than comfort – with Simon at your back, the tent in his pants catching you.
His voice is deep, husking and carnal as he reminds you who you belong to.
“Like having your pretty little cunt ravaged by an older man, don’t you, Love.”
He’s very protective of you.
He sometimes construes your young age as innocence, naivete. Hence, he never lets you out of his sight when you’re out together.
Scary dog privileges.
Absolutely feral, down bad for you: you only have to do or say the most minimal of things to make him melt, to become a slave to his adoration for you.
That being said, he’s paranoid that one day you’ll see him as he views himself and leave him for someone better – someone you deserve. Someone younger.
He’s damaged goods, you still have your whole life to live. And yet you stay with him, promise him that he’s the only man you’ll ever love.
As stated earlier, Simon can be persuaded of your dedication to him via special, particular means.
However, if you play into his insecurities, even to get a rise out of him, he’ll pounce on you, grab your wrists and pin you to a wall, gripping your jaw and forcing you to look at him.
And, beneath dark lashes and darker eyes, he makes a promise to you.
“Oh, you think a younger lover can pleasure you like I can?” he says, his head tilting. “Don’t you worry, Darling. I’ll fuck that idea outta that pretty little head of yours until the only thing rattling around in there is me.”
Tumblr media
König
Somewhat insecure in your relationship. Especially when he gets disapproving glances and glares from passers-by when they note the very obvious age difference between the two of you.
But, his love for you can overcome any measure of anguish, social or otherwise.
He’s the gentlest giant you could ever hope to meet, both in and out of bed.
When he feels like it.
He treats you like you’re innocent and pure, shielding your eyes from graphic scenes on TV and gruesome stories in the newspaper.
Sometimes he has to remind himself that you’re a fully-grown woman, even if you are younger than him.
You send him absolutely feral whenever you wear his clothes btw.
Seeing as any one of his shirts could be your nightdress, he calls you his “Minnie Maus”, and treats you as such.
Pls sit on his lap, he’ll only be able to die happy once you do.
He fears judgement from others whenever you enact PDA, so to make up for his lack of willing to be physical with you in public, there isn’t a moment where you’re without him at home.
Extended periods of time in your presence tend to send him a bit…funny.
A little bit silly.
And by silly, I mean there’s a single thread of humanity keeping him from tearing your clothes off at any given second.
Especially if he’s seen a younger guy looking at you earlier in the day.
One of the few times he’ll get physical with you in public is whenever he catches someone looking at you with a glaze over their eyes he knows all too well.
He approaches you from behind, slipping a pythonic arm about your waist and pulling you into him.
Only now does your admirer look away, leave the premises entirely, once they catch sight of König’s gargantuan proportions and the rabid look in his eye.
Once you get home, he’s on you before you can even shut the door.
It’s times like these that König doesn’t feel insecure about the age gap between you.
Because he knows, no matter how little you’re willing to admit it, that nobody will ever be able to make you scream and cry and tremble like he can.
“Did you like that boy’s attention earlier, Maus?” he says, his eyes cattish and voice serpentine. He bears down on you, his hand about your throat as the other travels under your skirt.
“Is my love not enough? Are my affections wasted on you?”
His eyes glint in the dim light of the bedroom. His teeth look sharper – primal – in the low glow of the bedside lamp.
“No matter. I’ll make you remember how much you need me,” he presses into you. The bulge between his legs feels far too big for you to take.
“Inch by bloody inch.”
Tumblr media
Valeria
You’re her little Angel, her Goddess, the light of her life and her reason for living.
That does not exempt you from her teasing, however.
Sexual or otherwise.
She’s particularly fond of randomly grabbing your backside when she’s walking past, or smacking it so hard that you yelp and she’s grinning from ear to ear.
Even if you use your puppy-dog eyes on her, disobedience is not accepted under her roof.
In fact, trying to wriggle out of any punishment she has planned is enough to make her grab you and pin you to a wall, her grip unrelenting as she sucks and bites your neck, leaving harsh red marks and a sense of helplessness as she does what she pleases with you.
“Don’t go fucking around behind my back again, Chiquita,” she tells you, her nose touching yours and her eyes black. She brings her knee between your legs, pressing into you.
“Or next time I won’t just stop at your throat.”
She loves dressing you up in the finest clothing money (and a ghastly reputation) can buy.
She thrives on having you hanging off her arm like a dog on a leash; she gets to show you off to her subordinates and business partners who know they’ll never even have the thought of having a chance with you entertained.
Valeria’s mood can fluctuate in bed.
Sometimes, she treats you like a common whore she found on the street, fucking every ounce of rage, hate and venom into you until some part of you’s left bleeding as Valeria’s panting on top of you, her lips to your cheeks as she kisses your tears away with a whiplash-inducing gentleness she seemed incapable of minutes ago.
Most of the time, she’s loving and kind, putting your needs above her own.
Sure, she still teases you, makes you work for her love and dedication, but you know she’d do anything for you.
You can tell in her tone as she tells you of how she would “Scorch the earth if only to find a fragment of you in the wreckage.”
You disappearing or being taken from her is her biggest fear, and at night she holds you tightly against her chest, your buffer against the world she would sooner see in flames than relinquish you to.
Tumblr media
Price
He’s so father-coded fr.
He calls you his little girl, his Princess, Love, Darling, Dollie — anything that highlights your fragile nature.
Shows you off to his friends just so he can show them what they’re missing. He adores the feeling of you curling further into him under the eyes of his task force, the look in their eyes relating something savage, primal, as they look at your bare thighs – the pinnacle of which shadowed by John’s shirt – and watch something they can never have, never touch.
John hides his insecurity well, but he does secretly worry about the age gap.
Especially when he watches younger men looking at you in ways he does.
The difference being that, while they offered you the world and would give you nothing, you are John’s world.
When you can tell John’s feeling worried, comforting him is a surprisingly easy task.
A kiss to the temple and the promise that he’s the only man for you is usually enough to put his mind at ease and make his face break out into a smile.
On the rare occasion it isn’t, however, alternative methods are at your disposal.
E.g. screaming John’s name into the night as your nails drag down the expanse of his back, bodies scorching as he brings you to tears with his touch and his unrelenting pace.
He will absolutely hold his rank/age over you when he’s like this, no longer a point of contention or shame for him as he tells you he’s the “Only one who can make you whimper like a fuckin’ dog,”
“Such a good girl for me, my good little cocksleeve,” he rasps in your ear as he bounces you on top of him, his hands about your waist, preventing you from fleeing or falling off.
“God, you’re so beautiful — so— fuck— gorgeous.” He’s panting, gasping, growling.
“And all mine.”
Tumblr media
Horangi
You’re the only thing that matters to him.
At this point, he only remains as a military contractor to ensure that he can keep you in the style to which you are accustomed.
Calls you 자기야 (Jagiya – Honey, Darling).
His favourite thing to do is sit you between his legs and wrap around you like armour.
In case you couldn’t tell, he’s highly protective of you.
You can make him do absolutely anything — he’s at your beck and call.
You can get him to buy you anything if you give him what he likes to call kitten eyes’ eyes.
Even if you’re being a brat, he remains calm and treats you like his little angel, his sweetpea.
Unless you push him too far.
At which point, he won’t hesitate to tame you if you try your luck.
He’ll have you bent over his lap, holding you down with his forearm as he turns your thighs and backside red-raw with the slap of his belt.
“Don’t start crying now, 자기 — you brought this on yourself.”
He never fails in the aftercare department, though.
Always filling your head with words of affirmation as he bathes you, carrying you to bed and tending to your skin with soothing creams and soft touches.
Hong-jin goes super feral crazy when you call him 오빠.
A common honorific used towards any man older than the person using it.
Even if you don’t understand the implications of it, Hong-jin does. And yes, it does tend to make him a bit silly.
Silly enough to know that he’s not going to last long and needs to get home ASAP to deal with…something.
Which he also makes your problem, pressing messy, desperate kisses to your lips as he tries to get his shirt off, your hands on his chest, feeling his heartbeat skyrocketing.
“I need you, (Y/N),” he says, breathless, almost growling. Yet, his eyes are wide, pleading. A doe-eyed prince with the aura of a wolf king. “And I’ll have every inch of you.”
Tumblr media
Alejandro
Pre-established passionate lover.
One who is fiercely protective over you.
If anyone — and I mean anyone — catcalls you, makes passes at you, or even looks at you in the wrong way, Alejandro makes sure to enact righteous fury upon them.
He’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you’re 110% satisfied, regardless of context.
You want a new wardrobe ? It’s done. A new car ? All yours. You need Alejandro now and it can’t wait ? Why, how can he say no when you whine like that, when you tug at his sleeve and tuck your head against his shoulder.
He calls you “mi Princesa” and makes sure everybody knows you’re his and he’s yours.
A thorough lover is how you might describe him.
Especially after he’s so willing to bend you against the nearest surface to get you off, no matter the time of day.
You can bring him to his knees with just a look. Turn him from the most respected soldier in his department into a feral wolf.
Which, if you play your cards right, can end very well for both of you.
Alejandro likes to play a game whenever you’re riding him.
He grabs you by your hips and anchors you on top of him.
“Let’s see how long you can hold on for, mi Corazón,” he says, flashing you a sultry smile before he’s bucking into you at the pace of a mechanical rodeo horse at full speed.
“Holding on” can mean anything from not being pounded off Ale’s hips to staving off your orgasm for as long as you can.
Failure to do either is when you see Alejandro at his most wicked. When he’s all teeth, a shark’s grin, his eyes dark and his voice low as he tells you that he needs to “Train your endurance. How else are you going to take me again, hm?”
Needless to say, you’ll be lucky to be able to get out of bed the next day.
Tumblr media
Rodolfo
His heart beats only for you. And as a result, he treats you like royalty.
As he should.
You want it ? You got it.
In abundance.
You have the best of everything and Rudy loves nothing more than seeing your face light up when you receive one of his many gifts.
That, and having you sat on his lap, raking your fingers through his hair as he tells you about his day.
He omits the more gruesome details, fearing he’ll taint you with the blood on his hands if he doesn’t.
Speaking of lap-sitting, it’s your one-way ticket to an eventful afternoon with Rudy.
Cockwarming is his go-to, your legs wrapped about his waist as he fills out reams of paperwork, pressing kisses to your shoulder and telling you “What a good girl you’re being, mi amor,”
Be prepared for a tidal wave of praise for doing the bare minimum.
It doesn’t matter if Rudy’s topping or bottoming, he’s going to let you know how you’re making him feel, how nobody will ever ensnare him like you do.
“I love you,” he rasps, eyes half-lidded and skin glistening with sweat as you take him.
“I love you, I love you so much–” He growls, back arching into you as you catch a sensitive area. His chest is heaving and his eyes are dark.
“I’ll never let anyone else have you.”
Tumblr media
Graves
This guy was made to have a controversially young girlfriend.
Calls you “Babydoll”, “Babygirl”, “Little Lady”, etc.
He unironically refers to himself as “Daddy”.
E.g. “You were eyein’n up that necklace for a while, Darlin’…” His hand slips to the crotch of his jeans, rocking his bulge into his palm.
“Maybe if you ask Daddy real nicely, he’ll get it for you.”
He’s actually very caring. He’d buy you the world if it meant seeing you smile.
He never expects anything from you in return.
He just can’t pass up the opportunity to have you in his arms, to touch you.
Graves can tend to go overboard with the gifts, though.
Calls you “young thing” when he’s feeling humourous.
On the flip-side, he can (and will) use your age gap against you. Like Price, but more Southern.
He’ll be very condescending when he’s mad, tending to use terms that undermine how intelligent and capable you really are.
“If you’d just listened to me and gotten it through your tiny head that I’m doing what’s best for you, we wouldn’t be in this situation!”
On the flip-flip-side, he uses your age gap as a jumping-off point into…dubious activities.
#1 dumbification kink enjoyer.
He’s a switch with top lean, what can I say.
“Can’t do anything without me, can you, Sweetheart.” It’s not a question. His eyes are too serious, too stern, for it to be. He’s  pounding into you, hands either side of your head, caging you beneath him.
Between his panting, he presses a wet, uncoordinated kiss to your lips.
“I’ll make sure you can’t even think without me by the time I’m done with you.”
Reblog for more content like this! It helps creators like myself tremendously and it is greatly appreciated :-)

Ensemble Cast
pairing: Platonic! Task Force 141 (+ Alejandro & Rodolfo) x GN! Reader
words: 660
Summary: Hours into a stakeout, your boredom leads you to ask the everyone the classic hypothetical question, “If they were to make a movie about us, what actor would you want to play you?”
warnings: Lots of fluff and dialogue, found family trope, mentions of injuries, and an implication of angst.
a/n: MW2 is the ultimate found family story, change my mind.
Tumblr media
Running your fingers along the edge of the map, your watch caught your eye. 5:14am, the bold digital numerals taunted. you pushed back from the table and made your way across the small room. You quickly scanned for an open spot to sit before finding one along the wall. Settling in with the group, you fought the urge to sigh. Stakeouts, while typically easy work, were never something you particularly enjoyed. A welcome break from the firefight you had been active in the past few weeks, yes, but nonetheless almost entirely boring.
You had been with them for what felt like forever and had long considered the group more like a band of brothers than a task force. Yet even the closest groups of people are bound to experience a lapse in conversation when stuck in a room together for hours on end. Unsurprisingly, a hush had fallen over most of the group more than a few hours ago. Like Ghost, you were more than comfortable with a bit of silence. But as the ninth hour of the stakeout came to a close, you couldn’t help but ignore your growing itch for conversation.
“If they were to make a movie about us, what actor would you want to play you?”
The question escaped you almost absentmindedly. The result of your brain slipping into semi-auto pilot. The words simultaneously cut Soap’s quiet one-sided ramblings short and introduced a bit of spirit and levity to everyone. You felt the room fall into a moment of quiet consideration, as the men began using the same war strategist intensity that was hard wired into their brains to figure out what Hollywood star they felt was most like themselves. Hypotheticals were a more than welcome break from going over the intel for the umpteenth time, or worse, being forced to listen to the vocalization of whatever popped into Soap’s mind.
With a groan, Captain price shifted his position in the stiff plastic chair he occupied. Trading his relaxed posture for sitting at attention in anticipation of everyone’s answer. A few moments passed before he spoke up. “Easy. Hugh Grant.” He started before taking a dramatic drag from his cigar. “A classic British gentleman after my own heart.”. Even through the darkness, you could see the playful glint in his eye. Price’s answer earned a range of amusement from the group and a full-bodied laugh from soap. “I’d want either James Mcavoy or… that guy from Game of Thrones.” Soap grinned. “Jon Snow!” Gaz snorted. “For me..” He started ”I know he’s not an actor, but I’ve been mistaken for Lewis Hamilton once or twice before, so probably him. What about you, Alejandro?” “I’d play myself. Why hire an actor when you can have the real thing?” Alejandro chimed in. “¿Y usted?” Alejandro said, elbowing Rodolfo. “No estoy seguro… ¿Maybe Mario Lopez?” “¡Vaya! Looks like Rudy’s feeling confident!” Alejandro chuckled, earning a smile and a slightly bashful look from Rudy. “What about you, LT?” Simon simply shrugged. Clearly not impressed by the current conversation. “Well. we could always dress up one of those twelve foot skeleton decorations and have you do the voiceover.” Soap snickered.
A moment passed before everyone, Simon included, burst into laughter.
Seeing everyone fall apart to such a dumb joke left you giggling right along with them, almost unable to contain yourself.
For years you found it strange how much joy you felt in moments like this—sitting in a dark and musty shack, laughing and cracking jokes alongside your rag tag group of soldiers. Yet you couldn't ignore how these moments brought up a near forgotten sensation; a syrupy sweetness in your chest. A feeling synonymous with those of love and what it meant to finally belong somewhere. The feeling of finally finding a family. Because what is a family, if not a cast of characters - often beaten, more than a little broken, and almost always bloody - who still choose to form glimmers of light in a world of dark?

Hiii it's me again lol
Okayokay, so I just finished reading your rant on the COD fandom's unique choice of pet names, and I'm gonna be straight up and say I'm going completely off topic and INSTEAD veer off to a side thing you pointed out to give my own opinion! This is a kinda hot take so I'm just screaming into the void hoping someone shares my thoughts 🖤
Sooo we all know the Ghost comics released alongside the OG MW2. I personally haven't read it due to the TWs but I've seen enough screenshots and summaries to get the gist of what happens. HOWEVER I believe those comics are only canon to 09 Ghost and doesn't apply to reboot Ghost, and this is what I meant about it being a hot take cuz almost everyone in the fandom agrees the comics happens for both. And I can definitely see why! I mean, we didn't exactly get any concrete backstory regarding reboot Ghost, so anything goes.
Where I stand on the line, I'm a firm believer of reboot Ghost being Just A Guy™️like he had a (relatively) chill childhood but there are some things that stay the same with the comics. Like Tommy scaring him with the skeleton mask when they were children, and Simon enlisting after the 9/11 attack (not sure if those are canon, it's just what I've heard so please correct me if I'm wrong). No abusive father, no Roba, no Christmas trauma. Sure it makes him less interesting but I find it pretty amusing how the person wearing a skull print balaclava has no real reason behind wearing it other than it looking cool lmao
Anyway, yap fest over! Hope you have a wonderful day/night and remember to hydrate! 🖤
- Biscuits 🌺
SALUTATIONS it's good to see you again, I hope you're doing swell as well :D 💚💚💚
Technically, what you're saying is true!
The '09 comics pair with the '09 character and are indeed cannon for only him as far as I'm aware (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). The reboot lacks a true significant backstory. As in, if you search it up, you basically get "he joined the SAS and is super cool and is great at doing cool soldier things and probably can do a sick backflip". What we know about the reboot is basically what we experience in game. And until we get either another game focusing on his earlier life or have confirmed scenes of it, we really don't know.
Personally, how I distinguish "Ghost" as a being is as three versions.
You have '09 Ghost. '09 Ghost is the one we experienced in the OG games and the comics. He's the dead one - and the one with the actual official backstory. Those are both cannon and are tied to him as a character.
You then have Reboot Ghost. Reboot Ghost is, as the name entails, the reboot alone. Basically, what we have of him and know of him is what we experience in game. Technically, we don't know his backstory and the full extent of his life. Is it similar to his '09 counterpart? We don't know. He's kinda the "What you see is what you get". There's some things implied with his dialog but most of his story is up for debate.
And then we have what I'm calling Fandom Ghost who is the most common variant. Fandom Ghost is neither the reboot nor the '09 version - he's a middle ground. He's what everyone is thinking of when you hear 'Ghost'. Usually how I've seen him portrayed is the reboot with the '09 backstory or some semblance of that.
(Side note: I know it's quite typical to specify when you're referring to '09 Ghost specifically because he does, of course, have a very different history and outcome. Not to mention, the dynamics with him and Soap are very different than in the reboot which is another reason why people usually clarify and go "This is who I mean")
I've never actually seen a TRUE reboot Ghost that wasn't fandom based or fanon in writing, now that I think about it. Probably because it's not that easy to write about a character in a limited sense where you don't know much about them and you have to stick to the limited material you're given.
A lot of COD operators lack a significant backstory outside of their military history. That's mainly done because they're videogame characters of a military, shooting focused game and they don't usually have the time to go into depth as to why that character is the way they are. They're primarily soldiers who are saving the world and playing their role. You might see snippets here and there but the focus isn't on their background or the inner workings of their character in a very personal way, aside from what is revealed on missions to add a natural perspective and make them see more human
Because it's not like in the middle of a life or death situation you're going to sit down and explain that you had a dog growing up, you had three sisters, your favorite drink is Baja Blast, and you have a lifelong fear of Burger King.
'09 Ghost, however, we GOT a backstory. We were given something to work with. Clinging to that or melding it with the reboot, who lacks a backstory, is what a lot do because it's trying to make use of the best source material we got until we can maybe get something else too. Personally I was a fan of that backstory because it DID add depth to him, significantly so. I liked it.
Additionally, I think a LOT of people go that route too because it's something that's quite easy to look up so they don't need to make something themselves
(This is an entire theory and me putting on my tinfoil hat: There's a lot of people in the COD fandom who are just here for the big beefy men and don't do their research, haven't played the games - they're just assuming things. And when they see the fandom Ghost, they just assume it's true, and it spreads when they write their own stories. I hope this doesn't read like I'm trying to gatekeep or 'HOW DARE YOU NOT KNOW EVERYTHING' or 'you're not a true fan unless-', cause I really really really do not care. Do what makes you happy, but I'm going to avoid reading what I feel mischaracterizes him for sexual purposes alone hardcore)
I also like to imagine that maybe the team doing the reboots has enough common sense too to not entirely scrap such a backstory as hey, it IS interesting, so there's a strong possibility that reboot might share some origins. Kidding, I'm being fully delusional here and know they won't do that and will likely just ruin it and I'm hoping they don't have a chance. I know any new one they come up with -like the writing in the last campaign -would be utter carbonated hot dog water and I do not trust them at alllllll. I'm refusing to accept reboot Soap's death but that's a rant for another time
That being said though, there's technically no correct backstory yet for Reboot! Ghost aside from what we already know. Anything that adds backstory or melds anything else to him is making him fanon/fandom!Ghost (which is by far the most common iteration and the one people default too)
I love when people give him, and other COD characters, happy or somewhat not dramatic backstories. They already have enough going on with the wars they're thrown in, I live for them having a scrap of happiness and normality. I can't blame people for not wanting to write or deal with heavy backstories and it's nice to see variety and is SO super valid.
But at the same time, I also do like his OG backstory, I love seeing when people dig deeper into the gritty stuff too, exploring that side of characters because not everyone has the best life growing up. And joining the military and when they join can be telling too about their home life
Variety is the variety of life and when there's not exactly a cannon, then I love seeing people make their own reasonings and conclusions and write fanfics with their own theories. It's SO fun to explore what other people think and it really results in some of the sweetest fics that dive more into depth than the official writing team ever could hope to
The Ghost that I write are usually AU Ghosts anyhow so it allows me more flexibility in what I write. BUT if I'm writing for Ghost, I do the blend where it has more of the '09's backstory but his reboot vibes. THAT BEING SAID
I love making him just, A Dude©, still despite that. Having a bad past doesn't make him any less of a person - nor does it make him this ultra mega tough dominant edgy sigma bad boy. He's literally just a GUY. Sure, he has extensive SAS experience and training to boot. Sure, he's easily one of their top soldiers. He's a stone cold killer when he's Ghost. He's there to do the job.
But Simon? Simon's just a dude, like everyone else - they all are at the end of the day. Sure, they have their own personal struggles and do have to go through a lot, but they're still people. He goes to the grocery store and is genuinely confused about all the options of milk now (how the hell did they milk HEMP). He still makes his bed and has to fight the fitted sheet to stay on, using his size and strength to force it in place before it can do 'the thing' that all fitted sheets somehow do. He bought a bird feeder so he could watch the wildlife as he drinks his tea for breakfast. Speaking of tea, he has a whole collection! And the good shit, you know he won't settle for any less.
He's just A DUDE© at the end of the day and I love those mundane things because hell, he needs them to still feel human and to be reminded exactly what he's fighting for
I just find it so silly and ridiculous when he's consistently like "I'M Batman: I AM THE NIGHT" sheer dramatic levels of broody in stories or when he's put in as this mega dommy bad boy who is 6'5", growling constantly, and is like the posterchild for a wattpad biketok fanfic.
Lmaooo be for real, he's out here doing arts and crafts to make his masks. He has a whole paint collection and everything. He went into the craft store for paint and came out with two new hobbies and no, I'm not listening to anyone who says otherwise

Post script on BLOOD||HUNGER
OOOkay, like I said in the ask I got earlier, this post is gonna be LONG. I’ll be covering the poems at the start (and sometimes end) of each chapter, the source of inspiration for them, the timeline of the fic compared to canon, deleted scenes and maybe most importantly the true identity of the Hunter.
I’d like to say before I start rambling that I appreciate each and every one of you that commented, liked and gave kudos! It really means a lot to me, that you’re here reading my silly little stories haha.
I’m gonna start with the beginning - how I started thinking about the main plot of BLOOD||HUNGER.
So, I kept thinking about the Alone mission in mw2 (as we all do), but thinking about “what if Soap was a civilian in Las Almas when it happened?”
(This is slightly inspired by this fic by TRaena, which I read months earlier and kept thinking about its setup because it was so damn good. I highly suggest reading it!)
So originally, I imagined a whole plot where Soap is a football player, having a vacation in Las Almas when Graves suddenly attacks. Ghost is in the 141 like in canon, but he’s the one that gets shot in the shoulder. The two of them meet, and because Ghost is injured, and Soap is stranded alone in a foreign country, they decide to fight together to get out.
In that original plot, Soap continues sticking by Ghost throughout the campaign, creating distractions for Rudy and Ghost while they rescue the vaqueros, and getting kidnapped by Hassan where he gets dangled over a window in Chicago and Ghost saves him. As you can tell I thought about that version quite a bit, but I made one change that moved it in the direction of the actual story I ended up writing.
What if Soap was dishonorably discharged instead?
That trait changed his entire character, from a guy that got dropped into a war where he has no experience fighting, to someone that is bitterly familiar with it, yet he was exiled from participating. And yet it followed him.
Ghost’s character is actually inspired by who I originally thought he was, when I first saw the mw2 campaign.
See, I first watched my friend play it, and he’s been playing cod since the original mw. He built Ghost up for my like he’s this op guy (which he is), and when he said that he’s been doing guerilla warfare for years in Alone, I thought to myself ‘was this guy just running around fighting with scarp, when the British Military just… decide to pick him up and make him a soldier since he was so good at it??’
I didn’t know about any previous campaigns, and obviously not about ‘09 Ghost’s backstory. Straight up thought he was just some weirdo the SAS recruited because they went ‘why the hell not’.
Now, let’s get to the timeline differences between B||H and canon.
So, like mentioned in chapter 5, the reason Soap got dishonorably discharged was because he killed Makarov on the helo when they were exfiling with him, as seen in a mission on mw3. Soap shot him, by the way, because Price and Ghost weren’t on that mission. He didn’t respect his COs enough to not succumb to his gut reactions, so he ignored them. Because mw3 takes place in 2023 (if I remember correctly, since mw2 took place in 2022), that happened in 2019, and I specifically put it before the formation of the 141. When Soap and Gaz meet for the first time, as Ghost reveals his true identity, Soap mentions he didn’t know Gaz was in the 141, and that was the reason.
Price did want Soap on the 141, even with his track of insubordination. It was another reason he felt bad about his discharge.
I put Ghost’s capture by Roba and torture in 2009. He managed to run away and kill Roba in 2010. B||H takes place one year after Soap killed Makarov, meaning it’s 2020, so Ghost has been a mercenary for about a decade (as is mentioned in one line).
Ghost tried initially, like I wrote, to avoid fighting. He didn’t want to return to the military. After discovering his family was killed, however, he realized he has nothing. And so, he became a merc.
Which brings us to the last difference between canon and the fic (and the biggest one) - the Hunter. And to explain the Hunter, I have to first talk about the poems.
I’ll say it straight up, I have no clue what made me come up with the idea of the poems. One day, right before I was going to sleep, I shot up in bed and wrote down one poem. I put my phone down and instantly fell asleep. No idea what was rattling in my brain that night, but in the days afterwards I wrote down a few more poems, establishing the story of the Blind Man and the Beast.
Those poems I wrote in my notes app weren’t written in the same format as the ones in the fic, instead they are more… modern. I didn’t like that, I wanted them to emulate the format of a classic fairy tale or folk tale, but I didn’t really know how to write that. So I started doing research, and I decided to focus specifically on Medieval English poetry.
That is where I found the Exeter Book. And that find shaped the entirety of the fic.
Small history lesson on the Exeter, it is a codex of Middle English poems and riddles from the 10th century. Most of the poems are older than that, but the first (sometimes only) appearance of them written in text was in the 10th century.
The first poem I found a translation for and read was “The Wanderer”. The name just jumped out for me, so I chose it first.
The Wanderer is a poem that is basically a monologue of an exiled knight. His lord and companions have died in a past battle, and he now roams the land, with no goal, pondering the nature of men and war. He starts the poem as a melancholic, frankly depressed man, with pessimistic views on the world, and by the end he is referred to as the wise man, learning the values a man must keep close to his heart in order to be a good man.
Soap, as he is a sort of exiled fighter, fitted right in with that poem. Honestly, I was shocked at how much it fit. And so, he is based on that poem, the first word in the fic “often”, is the first word of “The Wanderer”.
Often, in The Wanderer, means “always”, according to the translation I was going off of. The first line of The Wanderer is “Often the solitary one”. In truth, The Wanderer is always the solitary one. The first line of the first chapter (not in the poem), is “Often was Soap told, “stop trying to be the hero, MacTavish.””. Often here, also meant to be “always”. The first line of the first poem, “Often were the stars, the only witness to me”, is in the same vein.
After reading a few poems, I moved on to the riddles. A lot of them are quite odd, some having innuendos on purpose, and some having such a weird answer I honestly have no idea how anyone found the actual solution. One riddle jumped out for me, though. It’s one I refer to as “the sword riddle”, as the answer is sword. Or at least, so it seems so, at first.
See, this riddle has possibly a different solution, but it is unfinished in the Exeter, as some pages seemed to be missing. The sword riddle starts out as follows: “I’m a wonderful thing   shaped for fighting/beautifully dressed,    dear to my master.” (sidenote: many riddles were in first person). The first half of the riddle continues similarly, as is a sword was explaining its victories in battle, and how it protracted its master. Except, the poem suddenly shifts, when the sword says:“I have often hurt another/at the hands of his friend. I am far and wide hated, /accursed among weapons.” as the riddle progresses, it becomes clear that this is not a sword talking, but a knight.
This riddle was the basis for Ghost, his struggles with his failure as a Lieutenant, and the resulting dehumanization he did to himself to distance himself from those emotions, as Ghost. The first lines of his introduction chapter, chapter 2, are inspired directly from the sword riddle: “It was an extraordinary thing - shaped for fighting, a strong, solid body, adorned with black…”
You can actually at some chapters find my direct inspiration for that chapter’s poem/s, if you look at the names. Every chapter name in B||H is taken from a poem or riddle in the Exeter, and I’ll list them here:
1 - Wræclast (Path of Exile): The Wanderer, line 6a.
2 - The Death-way: The Seafarer, one specific possible interpretation of a word in line 63, onwælweg.
3 - The Ruin: The Ruin, the poem is in reference to the church Soap and Ghost fight their way out of.
4 - Vainglory: Vainglory.
5 - Hell Rising: a line from “The Descent into Hell”, from a translation I don’t really like, but it’s the only complete one I found.
6 - Droops and Decays: The Wanderer, line 63a.
7 - Wont of Devils: The Whale, towards the end.
8 - Accursed Among Weapons: the sword riddle, line 16.
9 - The Downfall of Kinsmen: The Wanderer, line 7a.
10 - A Secret Disease: The Rhyming Poem, from a specific translation I chose.
11 - The Battle-Sick: Wulf and Eadwacer, again specific translation, this website has a weird format that might be broken, but it kinda makes the poem feel different, and I liked it. [Here's the Wiki for it]
12 - The Bearer of Gold: this one is from a fragmented riddle, one where the answer can’t be determined.
13 - The Song of Us: Wulf and Eadwacer, same translation.
14 - Famous Fate: The Wanderer, 100a. The translation notes this means “turn of events”.
15 - Where All Permanence Rests: The Wanderer, 119a, the last line in the poem.
To properly see all the little tidbits I took from each poem, I’ll have to explain each one, and probably also paste it here so you can read. I would if that hadn't taken five years to do, and I want to talk about other stuff haha. But I just wanted to list the ones I did reference.
So, now that I’ve explained how the poems are referenced in the main fic… what about the poems I wrote?
Obviously, the first poem references The Wanderer, just as the first lines in the fic do. But what is the story of the poems?
Blooede Starvatfōre-dēde, a fictional codex I made for the fic, is a book similar to the Exeter, collecting stories from the 10th century. Except, unlike the Exeter, all the poems in the book tell the story of the same characters: the Blind Man, the Beast, and the hunter (not to be confused with the Hunter, capital H, which refers to the character in the main plot). Blooede Starvatfōre-dēde, by the way, meaning “Blood Starvation” in Middle English. Or, Blood Hunger.
Blooede Starvatfōre-dēde does exist in the world of B||H, Soap, Ghost and the others are simply not familiar with it. I had a plot for the story in the poems I wrote, which is in direct parallel to the main story in the fic. In fact, some poems spoil some plot points, if you go back to read them after you finish the chapter they were in.
Like I mentioned in the ask I got today, I’m not sure how much, if anyone, really understood what’s going on with the poems. I honestly don’t know if it was clear, I never have anyone beta my writing, unfortunately. So, I’m going to explain the story told in the poems, and how it connects to the main plot.
I’ll be explaining the poems in the order they appear (not always the order of the book itself, as noted by the page numbers on each poem).
The Blind Man is a fallen knight (sidenote: the Beast never refers to the Blind Man with that name, and he usually calls him Fallen Knight), who lost his mates and Lord in battle, the same battle that took his eyesight. He roams the earth with no destination, simply mourning what he used to have.
The Beast starts out as a terror on a road leading to a village. The trader that first meets him decides to go to a different road, and the young girl is so afraid of him, she turns back. All the village people fear the Beast, for they know how it terrorized others in the past. The Beast at present, however, is mostly docile.
The Blind Man bumps into the Beast, while he walks on his road. The Blind Man apologizes, explains how he lost his sight in battle, and asks the Beast kindly to move. The Beast does, but he also asks the Blind Man (the Fallen Knight), if he could let him follow, as the Beast too doesn’t have a goal or destination. The Blind Man agrees.
The Trader sees the Blind Man walk with the Beast, and he worries about him, as he thinks the Blind Man didn’t realize he’s walking alongside a Beast. The Blind Man asks the Beast if he plans on hurting him - to which the Beast answers, if the Blind Man finds that the Beast pushes him on a path of death, he asks the Blind Man to kill him.
The Beast, at a later point, asks the Blind Man why isn’t he afraid of him. The Blind Man answers, that he doesn’t believe in monsters, he believes in mankind, to be kind, and cruel. For him, there is not such thing as monsters.
A knight, who once fought besides the Blind Man, spots him alongside the Beast, and he stops them both, threatening the Beast to leave the Blind Man alone. The Blind Man assures the knight, that the Beast is calm, it doesn’t hurt him. The knight asks, how come the blind lead the sinner, and the Blind Man replies, that when all other paths are unavailable, sometimes only the blind can truly lead.
The Blind Man asks the Beast what is his true name. The Beast answers, that Beast is the only name they know. The Blind Man insists that it is only the name the village people call him, and the Beast repeats his answers. It is then that the Blind Man decides he will name the Beast himself, with deeds this time, and not words. He is telling the Beast he can be defined by more than his past, than his looks. The Beast asks how, and the Blind Man answers, with ferocious will to mark yourself with actions yet to come.
At this junction, they meet a man called “the hunter”, who announces that this land is infested with many Beasts, and if one wished to do good in the world, they must kill them. It is why he, the hunter, slays such creatures. He asks how could the Blind Man protect such evil, to which the Blind Man answers, that the Beast is no more different than a man than he is. The hunter accepts the answer, but comes to the conclusion that they’re both Beasts.
One day, the Blind Man asks to see the Beast’s face. The Beast answers, confused, that he thought the Blind Man was, well, blind. The Blind Man says he’s correct, but that his hands have yet to fail him. So the Beast lets the Blind Man feel his face, his hands. The Blind Man then realizes, that the Beast isn’t actually a beast, but a man like him. He tells the Beast as much, but the Beast says that perhaps the Blind Man is also a Beast, if he thinks the Beast is like him.
The Beast asks the Blind Man how could he care for a monster like himself. The Blind Man smiles and says, how could I not?
They come across a village the Beast terrorized in the past, and the villagers come out to curse at him, telling of how the Beast took their children and ruined their crops. The villagers ask how could the Blind Man stand to not kill the Beast. The Blind Man first asks if what the villagers are saying is true, and when the beast confirms, that he was a terrible thing before anyone saw him as more than a monster, the Blind Man understands. He, too, felt like nothing more than a blind man, an injured knight, before the Beast joined his travels, and treated him as more than just his bloody past.
In the next poem, it is revealed that the Beast was once a knight himself, one that slayed friends and foes, as his masters ruled. He was cursed to be seen as a Beast by everyone that casts their eyes upon him, and that he’s damned to be starved of blood and flesh. It is here that the reason the Blind Man recognizes the Beast to be a man becomes clear - because he is blind, he doesn’t cast his eyes on the Beast.
The following poem is a riddle that its answer is “the hunter”. The hunter used to hunt for consumption, but now hunts sinners. He says, only those that know justice will know his name.
The Blind Man asks the Beast, one night right before the sun rises, what he thinks will be his fate, once he dies. The Beast replies that death comes to all equally, knowing the Blind Man’s past. The answer comforts the Blind Man, that his death will be the same death as his fellow knights, and as his companion, the Beast.
The knight returns to warn the Blind Man and the Beast, that he learned what makes someone a Beast. He tells them of knights who were tortured many years, that were labeled “Beast”. Of the young girl, that instead of cursing the Beast blocking her path, only prayed for her safety. Of a man, that fell in battle, and was abandoned by all but death, that he was also labeled “Beast”. This man is implied to be the Beast travelling with the Blind Man. The knight goes on to say that the hunter, who says he’s versed in justice, calls himself a hero. The knight disagrees, says he’s no better than any of them, and that a man like the hunter, who thinks he’s above God, must be sent to the only equalizer, to death itself.
The knight leaves his sword with the Blind Man.
The hunter approaches, and he swings towards the Blind Man, but the Beast slashes his face, blinding the hunter. The Beast tells the Blind Man, that they will fight as equals. The Blind Man, with the Beast’s aid, manages to kill the Hunter.
The village people hear of the hunter’s death, and they come out to investigate. They find the blind Man and the Beast, but now instead of a monster, they see the man that he truly is. Killing the hunter lifted the curse. The Beast, the Cursed Man, however, isn’t extremely happy, because the Blind Man has always seen him as a man, when the rest saw a monster, and that is what he cares about most.
The Blind Man asks the Cursed Man, where would he go now that he is not viewed as a Beast. The Cursed Man answers, that he has no place he belongs to, but by the Blind Man’s side. The Blind Man replies, that then they will travel together, until their death, and perhaps, if God gives them mercy, they will always be together, no matter which path they belong.
Now that I explained the story of the poems, I can start explaining how it connects to B||H.
Each main character in B||H has a direct parallel in the poems, with a few exceptions.
Soap is the Blind Man, a man who is defined by his failure. He is the first one to see the Beast for what he truly is, and consistently compares himself to the Beast. He is the one that kills the hunter.
Ghost is the Beast, later on the Cursed Man. Everyone sees a monster when they look at him, and he himself ended up convinced he is one, after years of being called a Beast. He admires the Blind Man greatly.
Price is the trader (I chose that profession because of his surname), he meets the Beast before the Blind Man. Unlike Price, the trader does not know the Beast before he became a monster.
Gaz is the Knight (because of his relation to Soap and his VA’s surname is literally knight). He threatens the Beast, thinking he means bad for the Blind Man. He also ends up being on the Blind Man and the Beast’s side, giving him his sword so he could kill the hunter.
The village people are the city people in the story. Alma actually accuses Ghost of being the reason their children are dying, just like the village people do in the poems.
Other characters like Laswell and the communicator do not have a parallel character in the poems.
And the last one… The Hunter. He is the hunter, obviously.
Except, he’s literally the hunter. The only character that is exactly the same, and I mean, the same person, is the hunter. The only one whose name is identical to the one in the poems.
And this is the plot twist I was keeping hidden in the poems all along - BLOOD||HUNGER is a fantasy story, only not from Soap or Ghost’s perspective.
There is a third story, beside the main one and the one in the poems. The story of the hunter.
The hunter, after being killed by the Blind Man, finds himself in the future. He doesn’t know how, doesn’t know where, but he knows one thing:
The Beast is alive, he walks with the Blind Man, and he must be killed.
The hunter finds them. And again, he fails.
It’s not known how many times the hunter fails. But each time he’s killed, he wakes up decades into the future, with an innate knowledge that the Beast and the Blind Man are alive, and he has to kill them.
The hunter wakes up again in 2019. He knows the Beast and the Blind Man are alive, and this time, he tries something new. He gathers an army, he hides his face, and he waits for the right moment to strike.
He thought, perhaps if someone else kills the Beast, he could be free from the curse placed upon him centuries ago, by death itself, as punishment for his hubris.
And the events that follow, are the plot of BLOOD||HUNGER. And as you know, the hunter fails yet again. He will wake up again, but Ghost and Soap will be long gone by then.
This is why the Hunter seemingly didn’t exist on paper, a year before B||H. Why he knew so much about Simon, despite the fact it shouldn’t be possible. And this is why he says to Soap what he said to the Blind Man the first time he died. Because, in the Hunter’s eyes, Soap IS the Blind Man. Soap mentions that when the Hunter’s face is uncovered, he seems familiar, and after he dies, he feels like it happened before. Because it did.
The claw marks on the Hunter’s face are the biggest clue that he is the hunter, as the hunter’s face was slashed by the Beast in the poem.
And the Blind Man’s wish, to always walk alongside the Cursed Man, is the reason both Soap and Ghost feel like they belong with each other. They’re destined to meet, no matter what form they take. Whether as enemies, friends or lovers, they will walk the same path eventually.
See, I don’t write stories like BLOOD||HUNGER usually. I write fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural stuff like every other work I posted. But this, the poems, the Hunter, are the reason I wrote BLOOD||HUNGER.
Because it’s not fully set in the real world. Still, this fic was quite a challenge for me, with no magic, enemies-to-lovers (which I never use, I don’t know why I decided to here, but that’s how it ended up), and limited characters.
A little tidbit about the city - it isn’t named on purpose, I wanted it to have more of a vague vibe that fairy tales (and the poems in the Exeter) have. I was also initially considering having the entire fic set at night, one night, but with the amount of things that happen it felt a little ridiculous. Most of it is at night, though, as Soap and Ghost sleep through days more than they do nights.
Also fun fact, the names of the civilians are all names of family members of mine, with the exception of Mihail. The name he’s based on is Mircea, and it’s a little too Romanian for my purposes, so I changed it so something more vaguely Eastern European, which is where the city is.
Now, onto the last section of the post script, the deleted scenes! (Are they really deleted if I keep them, though?)
Like with Not Alive, Nor Dead’s PS, I’ll try to give each of them context and the reason they were cut:
[Context: the entirety of the scene where Ghost gets betrayed and poisoned by the Hunter in chapter 2.]
He didn’t get a potential location for intel, so he started methodically searching all drawers and cabinets, lightly passing over surfaces to search for abnormalities. The longer he goes on finding nothing, the more an icy chill spreads through his gut.
Every cell in his body is screaming something is wrong here.
Footsteps on the lower floor catch his attention. Multiple, heavy, hurried. Ghost snarls.
The soldiers climb the stairs quickly, Ghost melting into the shadows, watching them pass by him. The soldiers are the Hunter’s, their blood-red insignia staining their black gear.
He’s being betrayed again. He needs to get out. He has to get out.
“We know you’re here, Ghost. Change of plan, we need you on another location.” The soldier communicating for the Hunter calls.
No, no, no. They’re lying.
“Commander”, another soldier says, “he might be gone.”
The Hunter doesn’t answer, but frantically, Ghost hears the floorboards creak closer and closer to his location, until a red glove reaches out and pulls him out of the shadows.
He instantly shakes it off, “the fuck are you doing here?!” he growls. The Hunter looks to his communicator, “this target was a ruse, Ghost. We have a new one for you.”
They’re lying. They’re lying. Ghost can feel the barrels of rifles at his back, lifting slowly to strike him down. He can smell the gunpowder and the bite of metal-
Ghost glances behind him. The soldiers are busy searching the house. He nods.
It feels so wrong, but… could he be wrong? Is he just getting paranoid over nothing?
“Give me the location.” he grunts, his back constantly tingling with the weight of phantom gazes.
The soldier walks over to the balcony, pulling out a spotter scope, “your target will be in the central city, the high rise building next to the church.” the building is lit by neon lights, red and foreboding in the darkness of night.
Ghost carefully walks to the balcony, taking the scope from the soldier. He doesn’t put it up to his face, not when there are phantom breaths on his nape.
They’re waiting. They’re watching. They’re going to-
A hand wraps around his neck, roughly pulling his mask up to reveal the pale skin underneath. Ghost grabs it, pushes it away, when a sickly cold sting bites the side of his neck, followed by a disgusting chill that seeps into his bloodstream.
Poison.
Ghost shoves the soldier off, swiftly sliding a knife to his palm and slicing his neck. The man doesn’t have time to react, before Ghost drops down to avoid another attacker. The world explodes with hands reaching for him, weapons slung with purpose to strike.
Not kill. They want him alive.
He has to GET. OUT.
A hostile rushes to tackle him, and Ghost uses the momentum to grab him and jump off the balcony. Glass surrounds them both for a moment, before they all fall down.
The body beneath him crashes with a sickening crunch, and Ghost takes the pistol in his hand to swing around and shoot at his attackers. A few of them fall over the railing, and the resulting confusion is enough for Ghost to take off and run.
Ghost feels the poison corrupt his blood, physically sense the way it travels down his neck, the chill spreading to his fingertips. He mutters a few curses.
He should’ve listened to himself. Never trust anything but himself.
[Reason to cut: I didn’t want Ghost to suspect anything before the Hunter attacks, I thought it would be scarier than if he anticipated it.]
[Context: the last lines of chapter 2 (can you tell I struggled with that one lol)]
Ghost internally sighs. This whole ordeal drudges up too many old memories, things he rather would’ve stayed buried in an unmarked grave. But he just has to put up with Soap until they leave the city.
And after that? He can leave him to the wolves.
[Reason to cut: Ghost sounds here like he wants something bad to happen to Soap when he leaves him. I wanted him to just not care about what happens to him.]
[Context: the talk Ghost and Soap have in chapter 6, when Soap reveals he killed Makarov.]
The Sergeant laughs bitterly, “he was already captured. I slit his fuckin’ throat when his hands were cuffed.”
“Really?” Ghost drawls, “as if bars would’ve stopped Makarov.”
Soap bristles, “so what, yer saying I was right?”
“You were the only one with half a brain there, it seems.”
Soap is visibly stunned at that, quieting down and averting his gaze. Did he really believe that he shouldn’t have done that? Shouldn’t have killed the worst man in modern times?
Really thought those restraints were made for the betterment of humanity, rather the benefit of the powerful few?
They continue walking in silence, the only sound accompanying their steps is the bristling of crops.
[Reason to cut: didn’t like how the dialogue sounded, wanted the conversation to be longer.]
[Context: the first time Ghost called Soap “Johnny”, chapter 7.]
Soap has a feeling the nickname just slipped, and he didn’t mean to call him ‘Johnny’. His mind, as it often does, starts mulling that small detail over.
If it was a slip of the tongue, it means this wasn’t the first time Ghost thought to call him that. How long have he thought of him as “Johnny”? Does that mean, under that bleached bone, he
[Reason to cut: didn’t like where Soap’s thoughts were going. Didn’t know what to do with them.]
[context: beginning of chapter 8, when Ghost’s real identity is revealed.]
(From the grave rises someone else, someone wrong-)
Soap takes a step back, the sound echoing through his mind and returning him to the surface-
(They know. The communicator. The Hunter.)
Johnny knows.
[Reason to cut: I liked the first line, but I wanted it to be memories of Simon’s rather than introspection of Ghost.]
[Context: start of chapter 8 again. It’s always the Ghost POV ones I struggle with huh?]
“Didn’t you,
Simon Riley?”
Ghost ceases his attempts to move. Thoughts slipping away from him, sinking down to the dark sea, drowning him.
(Don’t cry like a pansy, son. Just like your mother, you’ve always been weak-)
(You always had a bleeding heart, Riley. Time you wake up, see how the world really works-)
(The rotten flesh, the maggots borrowing into his ears, the dirt and grit between his teeth-)
(Lieutenant Riley was his most caring soldier-)
(What’s wrong, son?-)
(LT-)
(SIMON-)
Ghost feels him claw out, from the fortified casket he buried him in. Memories as his weapon, he rips through his chest, uncaring of the trails of broken bone and blood he leaves behind, splattering on the floor.
From the grave, a dead man rises. A man who always found the world too cruel, too loud, too unforgiving.
And with him, emotions Ghost long buried; Hurt, sadness, confusion. Fear.
Rage.
The knife in his sleeve slides easily to his palm, cool metal doing nothing to soothe Simon. He winds his hand back, and throws.
The blade shines almost blindingly across the room, missing Johnny by less than an inch and hitting the gleeful communicator in his eye. The man slumps over, smile melting away with the last of his life.
Simon heaves a breath, arm still forward, eyes snapping from the corpse to Johnny.
Johnny, who turns around, shock in his bright blue eyes, mumbling, “What… the fuck… did you do?”
He can’t look at those eyes again, can’t see the betrayal cloud them over, the pain he caused, always causes, spread through him. And so Simon, the coward he is, looks away.
“What the fuck did you do?!” Johnny repeats, stomping forward to haul Simon up by his vest. “LOOK AT ME! YOU JUST KILLED OUR ONLY WAY TO THE HUNTER!”
Johnny’s hands are trembling, Simon notes, when they take hold of his face to force him to make eye contact. Simon watches Soap’s expression falter.
What do you see, he wants to ask.
Do you see the man he was, Or the monster he became?
The clanking of the metal staircase behind them makes Soap sharply turn. Simon can’t see, doesn’t care to when Johnny is in front of him.
Tell me, he wants to scream, tell me I’m irredeemable. Tell me you hate me. Bury me, please.
I can’t be Simon again.
But Johnny ignores his silent pleas, grabbing his forgotten rifle and throwing it to Simon. With a dirty glance, he growls, “don’t think I’m lettin’ it slide. Get up, we need to fight.”
And Simon would’ve stayed in the tower, waiting death to take him for the final time, if he could stomach the idea of taking Johnny down with him. Simon, stupid, foolish Simon, wants the Sergeant to do what he couldn’t. To be better than him.
He takes the rifle, military instilled instincts helping him push up and take aim. Johnny is already ahead, fighting his way down the stairs.
The world outside is loud, gunshots and screams, bullets dinging off metal, blood dripping down to the earth below. Soap shoots them as the come up, but he’s quickly getting overrun. Simon spots a pile of crates right at the edge, where Johnny is currently taking cover.
He runs at it at full speed, shouldering it and pushing it down. Johnny curses at him, before he watches how the heavy crates clear them a path down. The soldiers groan, struggling to get up. They run down, barely avoiding the hands grasping at their feet. Below, soldiers attempt to shoot them, but they make an almost impossible target on the spiraling steps.
Simon jumps the last few, firing at the group around their truck to cover Johnny. The Sergeant shouts at him something, but he’s too focused on the enemies aiming at them.
A few bullets hit him square in the chest, knocking the breath out of Simon.
He doesn’t get time to recover when another bullet pierces through his shoulder.
It hurts more, oddly enough, after Simon clawed his way out. Everything feels… more.
Johnny takes out the shooter, and drags Simon to the truck. Throwing him to the passenger sit, he starts up the engine and shifts it to reverse to run down a few hostiles.
“Yer not gonna die on me, are ye?” He grunts, examining the blood sluggishly flowing down his gear.
Simon opens his mouth to answer, as he sees from his peripheral a wounded soldier shakily lifting his gun to aim at Johnny.
He pulls out a knife to throw at him before Soap can even clock the danger, the soldier crumpling back down in a blink. “...Thanks.” Soap’s eyes narrow. His eyes are no less bright for it, Simon reckons.
He returns to his sit, applying pressure to his gunshot wound, “drive.”
In the silence, Simon’s mind drifts. He’s finding it harder and harder to focus on anything besides Johnny.
[Reason to cut: a few things here are the same as the final version, but I specifically didn’t like how Soap acted here, and the fight Ghost soloed.]
[Context: chapter 10, after Soap bit a guy, and Ghost lost control of his limbs because of the poison again.]
The pain doesn’t even register in Ghost’s mind anymore. Nothing does, except Johnny’s form, sure-footed as he rushes back to battle, mouth still red.
Johnny is a disaster. An omen of ruin. A harbinger of death.
Simon wants to be destroyed by him.
If only to feel that searing touch once more.
[Reason to cut: Ghost is a little too in love with Soap with the way he’s talking here. Didn’t want that yet.]
[Context: chapter 11, the very end of it, where they realize who could find the Hunter.]
Soap inhales sharply. That’s it!
“Simon.” Dark eyes look up at his urgent tone, “I know how we can get to the Hunter.”
Gone is the softness in his eyes, Ghost turns to face him fully
[Reason to cut: wanted Ghost to come to that conclusion, not Soap. Thought it would be more impactful, if Simon chooses that fate on himself.]
[context: chapter 12, when Ghost and Soap explain to Price and Gaz that the Hunter is responsible for everything that happened in the city, not Ghost.]
“The Hunter?” the name makes Gaz falter, “who-”
Ghost cuts him off, “who do you think is in charge of this militia, Lieutenant?” he says the rank mockingly.
The Lieutenant fires back, “according to our intel, you!”
Soap shakes his head in disbelief, he and Ghost sharing a baffled look, “yer tellin’ me ye never heard of the Hunter?!”
This complicates everything. Ghost himself knew of the Hunter because of his line of work, and he was aware their existence was a closely guarded secret, but for the 141 to not even know of them…
It’s like they popped out of nowhere, a special hell designed for Ghost.
It does clear out one thing. The reason they wanted to pin the massacre of the city on him, leave him poisoned to rot until the 141 catches him. If the SAS believes they took down the militia, the Hunter would be free to do anything they wanted, under the radar.
Cut the head off the snake, it dies. Unless you cut the wrong head.
“You’re telling me”, Price starts, “that we’re after the wrong person?”
Soap sighs, “Ghost may not be a bleedin’ saint, but he’s not the leader of the fuckers shootin’ everyone out there.”
Gaz scoffs, “John, you know I’ll fucking take a bullet for you, but I won’t be able to believe that without some solid proof.”
Price joins him, “even if there is another individual… “The Hunter”, you called him?” he realigns his gun with Ghost, “we still need to take Ghost into custody.”
Soap bodily pushes Ghost behind him, again, “if you want ever want to catch the Hunter, you’ll need him! We’re not gonna-!”
[Reason to cut: Okay, I did a little mistake and completely forgot that Gaz and Price brought up the Hunter by name before, therefore they know of their existence. Had to cut a few pages because of that, as you can see…]
[Context: chapter 12, after Ghost falls because of the poison, still discussing the Hunter.]
Price holds it still, “Laswell said local police reported of a skull-masked man.”
“I haven’t seen a single police officer in the entire city.” Soap says slowly, “fuck- how did we miss that?”
“This city…” Gaz’s brows lift in shock.
Simon grunts, “the Hunter’s soldiers took over before I ever stepped foot here.”
[Reason to cut: didn’t like this explanation, didn’t feel like it made sense to me. The final version uses the informant instead, which ties in with the man Ghost kills for the Hunter in chapter 2, and I like that way better.]
[Context: chapter 13, when Soap and Gaz talk while he’s smoking.]
“John, mate. C’mon.” Kyle places a hand on his shoulder, leaning in to whisper, “tell me, what are you going to do after?”
“After what?”
“After you kill the Hunter. Are you going to leave back for Scotland, never see Ghost again, go back to your civilian life? Or…” Gaz nods towards Simon, “you’re going to stick with him?”
Oh… He didn’t even think about that. ‘After’... Soap swallows around the excitement the second option rises within him, “yer jokin’, right? I don’t- that’s not even a choice. What am I gonna do with Ghost?”
[Reason to cut: didn’t like how I phrased things here, felt like I could do it better.]
[Context: chapter 14, right before the operation to kill the Hunter begins]
It strikes him then, how much he wished they could’ve met on different circumstances. Perhaps if they knew each other before, they could’ve been more.
Perhaps he wouldn’t feel as doomed.
[Reason to cut: just didn’t really like it, it kinda introduces new feelings that I didn’t have time to explore in the last chapter before the epilogue.]
EDIT: I FORGOT TO PUT THE POEM AAA SHIT
Page ?? of the “Blooede Starvatfōre-dēde”, parable ?:
What drives a monster from the woods, the merchant questions,
As evil often lies within the dark, feasting on sin and vice,
What drives a man from his home, the Beast replies,
As he is nothing, when his steps sound alone,
What drives a knight from his kin, the Blind man finishes,
As a vow cannot be fulfilled, when it is voiced to the dead.
[The only reason I didn't put it in is because there wasn't a good point to, sicne I wrote it when the fic was already ending]
And that’s it! Another fic done!!! I had a lot of fun, I think you can tell haha. I also feel like I improved a lot compared to Not Alive, Nor Dead, I love seeing the progress. Thank you, if you read this monster of a post script, and for reading BLOOD||HUNGER.
As a little thanks… I will probably talk about it more later, but I am planning on beginning work on Revenant AU part 2 after I finish my semester. It will involve new villains, new Revenants, new Reapers… I’m excited to be able to return to that universe again!

In the last hours of my birthday, I come here to make use of my birthday privilege(?)
I ask... For anything you can give me, Roach headcanons, Jackson headcanons, more bts, or something about Makarov, headcanons of past Simon, Gaz and Jackson, or past/present Soap, Laswell and Laswell's wife, or Price.... Anything you can give, seriously. I love so much SiTO I accept every crumb you can give me
But, a mandatory thing. Use this ask to ramble about Roach, game Roach or SiTO Roach.
I love so much your fic, is consuming my life. Everytime I see an update, I just scream. And how much you share about the fic here, makes me so happy. Keep writing please.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy Birthday!!!! I would be honored to ramble for you!
ROACH MY BELOVED
He's my little skrunkly cryptid guy and I will always rant about him
I think that he learned his knife skills from Ghost
When he joined the 141 he was obviously extremely skilled with weapons and ranged fighting, but the team found out pretty quickly that he basically had no experience with hand-to-hand
So Soap/Captain MacTavish paired him with Ghost to have Ghost teach him because he had the most experience out of the team
This is how Past! Simon fell for Roach and how Roach fell for him
Essentially they spent hours together in training and Ghost just became attached to Roach and vice versa
Idk if anyone else kinda thought this/drew the comparison, but some of Roach's special takedowns in MW2 remind me of a takedown that Ghost would do (which is where this comes from)
Specifically the two in Cliffhanger, like they're both so violent that they make me thing of Simon "Stab a man 8 times before killing him" Riley
Speaking of which, you may remember that I mentioned that Past! Soap was in love with Roach. Well he doesn't know it, but essentially he's the reason that he and Roach aren't together.
Roach had a thing for Soap before Ghost in the first life, but his feelings faded and instead grew for Ghost because of their training together
Also I'm like 100% sure that the reason why they couldn't put Roach in the new MW2 is because they knew he'd be too powerful 😔
He would have killed Graves and all present Shadow Company members right as they started their betrayal and he would have looked good doing it
No but seriously I do think they've kinda backed themselves into a corner a bit with Roach because they've canonically made him:
A) hard to kill
B) insanely good with any weapon, like better than even Price and Ghost
So I think the only way it works to bring him back is to have him be the character that we play as again. So I can kind of understand why he wouldn't show up in MW2 if they'd set themselves on having Soap and Gaz be the playable characters
That being said, I better see him in MW3 or SO HELP ME GOD
EVEN AS AN OPERATOR PLEASE I WILL PAY GOOD MONEY I WILL FUND IT MYSELF IF I HAVE TO
I like to think that, in his first life especially, Roach liked to climb to high places
Soap and Ghost would go to the training room and look up and he's just chilling in the rafters because he finds it calming
This is one of the reasons I think he chooses to climb to the top of the armory when he's having his panic attack earlier in the story
Heights just relax him for some reason
Takes to wearing a mask in his first life because of Simon. When Ghost tells him why he wears it, he decides he's going to start wearing masks as well.
He can't do the full balaclava like Simon does, so he settles for a half mask
If the current life, he doesn't wear masks much on missions. He's just fallen out of the habit of it.
That being said, it is common for him to pull his scarf up to cover the bottom half of his face during missions
He does it off missions too though
I like to think that if he gets embarrassed or nervous he pulls it up to cover his face
Past! Simon and Current! Simon had very different rules about their masks
Past! Simon wore his all the time while on missions and would put it on while on base as well. However, when on base he was much more willing to pull it off. Typically he would take it off while training. Sometimes he just takes it off because he feels like it. This only happens if its just the 141 around. Never wears it while out in his civvy stuff.
To him, the mask is a work thing only. A way to allow himself separation and anonymity while at work so that nothing follows him home again. He would never wear any sort of mask while out with Roach because it's not really about his face or his scars.
For Current! Simon, the mask is an all the time thing. He's so worried about someone recognizing him and him losing the things important to him that he would just prefer if no one saw his face ever. This also, I think, comes from some insecurity on his part, though he'd never admit it.
So he wears the mask all the time. If he goes out with the team, its either a face mask, or the balaclava that he got from the ghost team mission. The only time he isn't wearing a mask is when he's alone with someone he really trusts. So typically only when he's with Soap and Roach.
Okay quick rant for a minute because I'm still not over it:
WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SAYING ROACH IS CANONICALLY BRITISH?
NO SERIOUSLY AM I MISSING SOME KEY PIECE OF CANONICAL INFORMATION THAT EVERYONE ELSE HAS SEEN ABOUT HIM?
When I try to look it up, the only things I get are fandom websites saying he's British with no actual proof or sources to back them up
Everyone keeps saying he was SAS, but like as far as I can tell that was never confirmed and since the 141 is a multinational group its fully possible that he's American?
His model from COD Mobile has an American flag patch, which I know people have said its because they used the design from another character, but like you're telling me they couldn't, at the very least, change the flag?
I'm also fairly certain you can see him in the museum in MW2 and he has an American flag patch there as well (unless I'm mistaking someone else for Roach)
Literally any time you look up his character model and he has an American flag patch
I can't find a source confirming that he's British. As far as I know Soap doesn't mention his nationality in his journal (I need to get my hands on it still but surely someone would have mentioned if it did)
And I don't think its confirmed in any of the comics either?
SO PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOODNESS CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT I'M MISSING CAUSE I'M NOT SEEING HOW THIS BOY ISN'T BASICALLY CANONICALLY AMERICAN AT THIS POINT
Okay, back to our regularly scheduled program
Some quick BTS stuff
I recently had to do some research into Makarov's backstory in the games (for an upcoming chapter 🤗) and let me tell you, I did not realize how old this man was during the events of the game
HE'S FUCKING 47 WHEN HE DIES BRO
FOR SOME REASON I THOUGHT HE WAS LIKE 30
This is all to say that it made me think more about the ages of the characters. So I've decided that Roach was likely almost thirty when he died in his first life and he's nearing thirty again in the present
So, with all the time that has passed so far, Roach is actually currently about a week and a few days out from his birthday in the story
I will also point out, to anyone who has forgotten: when the team celebrate Roach's birthday in Chapter 9, they're actually celebrating his birthday about a month in advance.
I would also love to talk about the differences in Makarov calling Roach Insect and Ghost and Soap calling him Bug.
Bug is like an affectionate nickname. Its cute, its unassuming, you can tell that they mean it in a loving way
Makarov calling Roach "Insect" is almost degrading. Its like he's nothing more than a nuisance. Its said in an almost mockery of the way that Soap and Ghost call him "Bug"
However, I would like to point out, that Makarov probably doesn't see it this way. When he calls Roach "Insect" he means it in an affectionate way. To him, Insect isn't degrading or meant to make Roach feel small, its a nod to who he is.
He's not reducing Roach to something small and unassuming like the word "bug" implies, but is rather acknowledging that Roach is a capable person who can be deadly and dangerous.
Of course, this is how his mind see's it, but the reality is also that he certainly uses the name Insect to remind Roach that he is essentially nothing anymore. Nothing outside of the purpose that he gives him.
I would also like to say that I think Makarov is genuinely in love with Roach and, if Roach did actually give into him, I think his obsession would grow to a very very dangerous point
Like a "I need to keep him locked in this room for safety. No one can see him because they might try to kill him. I have to keep him alive. I have to keep him alive. He's all I have. He's mine." Kinda deal
Would essentially turn into Roach only being allowed out when he's with Makarov or not being allowed to leave a room/the compound at all
The real question is, would Roach ever actually give in to Makarov?
I think the only way he would is if all of the members of the 141 were dead. I genuinely think that if that happened, he would be so broken by it that Makarov would be able to easily come in as the "only thing you have left" person and fully manipulate him while he's at his worst
If even one member of the team is alive though? No chance. Roach would sooner kill himself then turn to Makarov.
Okay let's leave the worlds biggest creep (Makarov) and move to the worlds cutest throuple (ghostroachsoap)
They're favorite activity is cuddling
Will, very literally, spend all day in bed together if given the chance
I think Soap and Roach like to drag Simon out to watch movies with them
They like scary movies but only Simon is really able to handle them well so it usually turns into him with an arm around each of them as they hide their faces in his chest during the scary parts
Naturally, its one of Simon's favorite activities
Love to play wrestle
Particularly I think Soap and Roach like to gang up on Ghost and try to wrestle him down (they always fail)
However, Soap and Roach will wrestle between themselves playfully until Ghost has to pull them apart for getting "too rowdy"
This is typically when they turn on him
Soap has literally the coldest hands and feet imaginable and he thinks its hilarious to randomly walk up behind Roach (the human heater (if anyone makes a joke about his death here we will be fighting)) and put his hands on the back of his neck
Roach jumps every time and let's out the most undignified squeal at it
Ghost thinks the noise he makes is adorable to he never warns Roach ahead of time, even when he's literally watching Soap walk up to him
They swap who's in the middle of the cuddle pile, but usually its Roach because he's the smallest so Soap and Ghost can still touch/hold each other around him
Ghost likes it when Soap and Roach just lay across him with like their full body weight. Usually one of them is laying across his chest and the other has their head on his lap or laying across his legs
Soap and Ghosts morning voices literally drive Roach crazy. Like its gets to a point where if they have to be somewhere in the morning he has to forbid them to talk so they can actually leave without him either dragging them back to bed or having to take a very very cold shower
Roach is the biggest flirt without realizing it. Like he genuinely doesn't realize he's flirting most of the time, he just thinks they're having a normal conversation/joking
This causes numerous instances of Soap and Ghost dragging Roach back to their room desperately because of his flirting while he's just there like "???😃???"
They only really hate it when he ends up accidentally flirting with other people without realizing it. This happens a lot while the three are out in their civilian stuff.
Soap and Ghost are fairly jealous/possessive, but Roach is typically very chill/doesn't get bothered with people flirting/crushing on the two. He really just trusts them completely
Even when he was only in love with Ghost and Gjost was with Soap, he wasn't really jealous, so much as he was just sad and a little angry
That all being said, when he does get jealous? Oh boy, he gets jealous
Like worse than Soap and Ghost in terms of handling his feelings when it comes to jealousy
Actually throws a rock at someone at one point over his jealousy kinda beat (don't worry he missed them because he was so blinded by his jealousy)
However, Soap and Ghost think he's fucking adorable when he's angry/jealous, so sometimes they may or may not try on purpose to make him jealous
I should probably stop here, but I hope this was a good enough birthday gift!! 💙💙💙

A Review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Major Spoiler Free!! (In case anyone cares)
Now, I usually would take a more linear approach when it comes to playing through video games, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get my hands on a copy of COD 4 in time. All thanks to the one, the only, Gamestop. During that wait, my desire to jump into this long-fabled game overtook me, and I eventually caved to just grabbing my Xbox controller and starting the damn thing.
Being semi-aware of the cultural relevance of this game gave me a tad bit of bias, but I believe I was able to surpass that since I have done a decent enough job of dodging spoilers.
The intro starts with you in base camp, running you through a tutorial via the use of a military drill. All the controls are fluid and easy to learn, especially if FPS games are your bread and butter.
The plot follows the mysterious and dangerous terrorist Makarov, as he tries to execute his plans of taking over both Europe and the West for Russia. I mean this is pretty cliche and samey in current terms and frankly in 2009 too. Although this can kind of come off as your traditional bad guy good guy shooter, I’d make the argument that Makarov is more or less a vehicle for the plot rather than a centerpiece. Yes, while he certainly has intense moments and intimidating behavior, the things that happen around him tend to pull you in more than just the character of Makarov himself. Unlike a character like Vaas (Far Cry 3), who’s personality and arc is the focus of the plot, in MW2, the environments that are created by Makarov’s schemes seem to be the more significant focus of the narrative.
These environments are where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 shines. From the intense chase down in the Favela to the exhilarating snow levels, the player is pushed through arenas that are unique, new, and well designed for their age. It kept me hooked.  For example, whenever I was about to log off, I’d sit through the following cut-scenes just to see where I’d be fighting next.
While being a little bit dated, the gun-play is smooth, understandable, and stimulating. Outside of the shotguns, each firearm is very distinct and memorable. I specifically note this because, by the end of the game, I felt as though I had learned to use each of the guns in specific scenarios that would play to their strengths. My only argument against the shotguns in-game is that they tend to show their age much like the enemy AI.
Enemy AI can easily be chalked up to either insanely fast or incredibly slow. Sometimes they’ll get stuck and become easy targets, but other times they’ll spin around in an instant and fill you with lead. This led to some confusion during my play-through as it would become frustrating when my well-timed strategy would be entirely shot down by an enemy with the reflexes of Robocop. Despite all the crap I’m giving the AI, I do have to admit that the game is nearly 11 years old, and my experience was no worse than if I was playing a non-AAA shooter.
Ok, now its time to touch on the diversity issue. Knowing this was Call of Duty, I didn’t go in expecting the most inclusive game in the world, but I must say I’m a tad disappointed even for a game from 2009. There were so many golden opportunities to shine a light on different points of view from a world’s scale during the significant events in the game. For example, (Minor Spoiler!!!) during one of the missions in the middle of the game, you are tasked with getting your team to take over a Russian oil tanker that has been commandeered by Makarov’s forces. Here would be an excellent opportunity to bring in either Japanese or South Korean special forces to help the cause and add more depth to the conflict at hand. Unfortunately, though, the battle stays to being the Anglo-West versus Russia and loses out on some great opportunities to make the world and the game feel deeper. Even the token diversity characters have little to no meaning. Sgt. Ramirez, you play as for half the game, yet I can’t remember a single thing about him outside of his name being Ramirez. Hell, I don’t even think he had any voice lines. Once again, it’s just a blown opportunity, and I hope to see an improvement in the later titles.
The first act may be bold, but the latter half of the game is truly the icing on the cake. By using twists and turns in the plot, Sledgehammer weaves one of the most stunning endings to a call of duty of game I’ve ever seen. The conspiracies of deception and truth run deep within the world, and it all culminates in a rapid-fire and bloody conclusion. While this game can periodically show its age and rust (lol), it is a fantastic roller coaster that you never want to get off.

2011 - This Year in Gaming
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - Nintendo DS, January 11th
A quirky adventure game where you are fucking dead, and you gotta work out who killed you. Ghost Trick is like Ace Attorney at first glance - it looks similar, and is made by effectively the same development team. Give it a shot on iOS.
Tumblr media
Dead Space 2 - Multiplatform, January 25th
Dead Space 2 was the undisputed king of alien horror until Alien: Isolation released. Yeah, you battle massive acid-spitting aliens, but it’s the necromorph babies you’re gonna be shit-scared of. It isn’t quite as unique as it’s predecessor, but it’s definitely much better to play. Bring your brown pants.
Tumblr media
The Nintendo 3DS Releases - March 27th
The 3DS was like magic when you first fired the 3D slider all the way up - then it became a gimmick you never used again. Releasing with a few decent launch titles and being able to boast Street Fighter IV as playable, the 3DS arguably didn’t really pick up much steam until a few months after launch. While more powerful than the original DS which was six years old at the time, I can’t remember being particularly interested in it at the time.
Tumblr media
Portal 2 - Multiplatform, April 19th
Valve’s final single player experience until their jump into VR was a bloody good one - very funny and amusingly written with the best Steve Merchant performance since The Ricky Gervais Show, Portal 2′s puzzle solving adventure is rarely a chore to play through, and has thousands of custom maps courtesy of the Steam community.
Tumblr media
L.A. Noire - Multiplatform, May 17th
Rockstar’s foray into adventure games has stood the test of time as an enjoyable and often startling journey nto the seedy underbelly of 1947 Los Angeles - as Cole Phelps you’ll threaten a Jewish man with the gas chamber, arrest a paedophile instead of a clearly guilty father, quote Hamlet to a prop skull at the scene of a car crash, destroy thousands of dollars of property, and yell at a child whose mother’s just been murdered. Great fun!
youtube
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - Windows
CDPR hit it out of the park with a fantastically improved sequel to 2007′s Eurojank diamond in the rough The Witcher, and really introduce Geralt of Rivia to more people for the first time with this game. A branching story that sees Geralt hunting Letho, the killer of King Foltest, and allying either with smelly hippy elven leader Iorveth and his terrorists who don’t appear in the sequel or the very cool but quite racist Vernon Roche and his special forces group, who are supporting characters in the sequel.
Tumblr media
Alice: Madness Returns - Multiplatform, June 14th
A surprisingly charming, unsettling dive into the fractured psyche of the Victorian equivalent of an actual goth gf, Alice is a sequel to American McGee’s Alice from 2000. Surreal as fuck and absolutely drowning in atmosphere. Just don’t look at any of the YouTube comments on videos of the soundtrack. Rather bizarre show...
Tumblr media
Duke Nukem Forever - Multiplatform, June 14th
Sometimes it’s best NOT to bet on the Duke. I bought this game to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I did neither - DNF is fucking boring, and I blame it ALL on Randy Pitchford’s devotion to ruining things I like. DNF could’ve been brilliant - either embrace your heritage like Doom Eternal would eventually do, or make it into a “last hurrah” kind of thing where Duke realises he’s getting old and can’t kick ass forever. The greatest disappointment of the 2010s so far - but worse would follow with it. The King is dead - hail to the King, baby.
Tumblr media
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Multiplatform, August 23rd
The piss-tinted prequel to 2000′s excellent conspiracy RPG Deus Ex, Human Revolution is like smashing Robo-Cop into a world where Detroit is not a humanitarian disaster zone. Adam Jensen, the gravelly-voiced biomechanically enhanced security chief of David Sarif, is dragged into a world of American conspiracies involving FEMA death camps, the government enforcing martial law in US cities and massive Chinese conglomerates plotting to control the world. Just like real life! DXHR is my favourite in the series for its design, atmosphere and narrative.
Tumblr media
Dead Island - Multiplatform, September 6th
Eh. Wasn’t that good. Notable for having the most misleading fucking trailer since Metal Gear Solid 2, but nowhere near as fulfilling upon release. An open world zombie survival game with a focus on melee weapons more fragile than your granny’s second hip. Oh great, now there’s a dead kid on my page. Thanks, Techland!
youtube
Driver: San Francisco - Multiplatform, September 6th
A game you literally can’t buy anymore, DSF was incredible to play when it came out and has only really gotten better with time. It’s still so unique for a driving game that I’m surprised Ubisoft have had the good sense to just leave it and not go pants-on-head retarded with the franchise since. Nick Robinson had to buy Subway gift cards just to purchase this game.
Tumblr media
Batman: Arkham City - Multiplatform, October 18th
Arkham City was so cool at launch and it still is today. A proper Batman epic with twists, turns, and the most addictive combat arena for years. This whole thing is gold from start to finish, except for the Harley Quinn DLC. I can’t even go into detail about it here, but I fucking LOVE this game.
Tumblr media
Sonic Generations - Multiplatform, November 1st
Sonic Generations is the best Sonic game since 3 & Knuckles, but has now unfortunately convinced Sega that not only do people despise the Adventure games, they also really want to see Classic Sonic and Green Hill EVERY GODDAMN DAY. Generations is like a proper celebration of Sonic’s history, even including stuff from every reviewer’s favourite punching bag Sonic 2006 - I really like Generations and it has a stellar modding scene on PC.
Tumblr media
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception - Sony PlayStation 3, November 1st
The “finale” of the Uncharted series until Naughty Dog decided it wasn’t. Uncharted 3 may not be as tight as Among Thieves, but it’s just as enjoyable. As quipping invincible action hero Nathan Drake, you’ll ruin historical artifacts and “incapacitate” about 4000 guys in your quest to find Iram of the Pillars, chased by Cruella de Ville and her mercenary squad of a million faceless Englishmen.
Tumblr media
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Multiplatform, November 8th
God I was so excited for this. World War 3 never looked cooler, and then it came out - and it wasn’t that good. It didn’t feel as epic as MW2, not as well-written as MW, and not as interesting as World at War and Black Ops. Multiplayer was... fine? I think this is the point where most people realised that Call of Duty was basically downhill from here.
Tumblr media
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Multiplatform, November 11th
See this paragraph? You can read it. Another installment in Bethesda’s cross-franchise “Little Lies” series, Skyrim has been released more times than China’s created a pandemic. But it’s still really good and when you rub it the right way it comes all over your screen like a particularly excited storyteller, ready to point in the direction of adventure.
Tumblr media
Super Mario 3D Land - Nintendo 3DS, November 13th
Yeah this was the point I decided I wanted a 3DS. It looked incredible and so fluid, and it really was! Playing this was great fun. That’s really all there is - I can’t be funny about it, nor overly critical. What do you want from me?
Tumblr media
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations - Multiplatform, November 15th
I didn’t like this when it came out - I thought the new graphic style was bad, Constantinople was dull, and the music was too different. Ezio was angrier, older, and the complete lack of any supporting cast from Brotherhood had me thinking this was a game that nobody wanted to work on - but now that I’m older, I can see this for how good it really was. Revelations blends the Ezio and Altair stories together, culminating in a satisfying emotional climax.
Tumblr media
Saints Row: The Third - Multiplatform, November 15
This video speaks for itself.
youtube
Minecraft - Windows, November 18th
There’s something beautiful about those early builds of Minecraft. Quiet, unassuming, and riddled with potential for exploration. I could talk for hours about the first time I was thrown into Mojang’s survival experience, about how I still get a bit weepy hearing Wet Hands by C418, about how shit-scared I still am of the mines and caves. Minecraft is immortal, and always will be.

30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game.
Me? Having guilty gaming pleasures? Never! I genuinely enjoy everything I play, so why would I feel bad about that?
Well...actually, there is one game...
Tumblr media
There hasn't been a good Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 4. Even so, I actually had fun with this because I got to play it with a friend of mine who really liked the series. We play on the couch whenever one of us goes to the others house. We usually just took turns playing online because we'd done most of the co-op missions (most of which were kind of boring save for a few. Also, unlike its successors, this game didn't have any split screen multiplayer.
Modern Warfare 2 isn't a very good game. When we started playing it, I wouldn't have even called it a bad game (Modern Warfare 3 is a bad game. Same goes for Ghosts). But a proper online scene in these games never lasts long. Once the next game comes out, most of the community migrates away, leaving the only the ugliest remnants. Fed up with Black Ops, my friend and I tried playing this again.
It was terrible. The online multiplayer modes were hacked so badly that it was downright laughable. People teleported across rooftops in order to knife you. Watching killcams would reveal players aiming perfectly at us through solid opaque walls while claiming that they weren't hacking. People would activate tactical nukes (a killstreak that requires 25 kills in a row without dying) less than 10 seconds into the match. While many people tried to hide the fact that they were blatantly hacking, others were more upfront about it. Unlocking everything without ever prestiging or leveling up? Using a custom text chat that doesn't normally exist in the game in order to advertise your hacks? Golden camo desert eagles? Hitting targets is too hard. I'll just use my body as a black hole to pull every player to my position. Then drop a grenade while I make myself invincible. Woah, is that guy flying? And is he shooting rockets from his pistol? I guess you don't really need jets to do that anymore. I can't make this shit up.
The only game mode we even played anymore had become unplayable. But I couldn't even get mad. The whole thing was hilarious in a really stupid sort of way. And if I ever suggest that we play this game again, it's only because I want to see if its gotten even more ridiculous. My friend doesn't like dealing with that for too long. I understand that. The hell kind of company drops support for an online game only a year after it launches? I understand that CoD is a yearly series but once the next game comes out, neither Treyarch nor Infinity Ward can possibly be bothered with balance patches or hack prevention. Black Ops and MW3 were hacked too by the way. Much like MW2, neither of them have been fixed.
I fully acknowledge that it is a bad thing to enjoy a game for being an utterly terrible experience. And that's what Modern Warfare 2 became once the next game in the series got released.
