Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
1966 - John Fogerty (above) and drummer Doug Clifford received draft notices and chose to enlist in the military instead to avoid conscription. Fogerty joined the Army Reserve while Clifford joined the Coast Guard Reserve. They were discharged in 1968.
Fogerty wrote the song “Fortunate Son” thinking about “rich men making war and poor men having to fight them.” The song features the lyric “I ain’t no senator’s son”, which was inspired by David Eisenhower and Julie Nixon, cited by Fogerty as being insulated children of privilege.
