A Review of “Oppenheimer (2023)”

Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors operating today. He makes some of the most entertaining movies in modern cinema. Even at his worst, such as with his last film Tenet, it is still way more entertaining than a majority of movies released. After the Warner Bros same-day streaming debacle they pulled; Nolan left for Universal and this is his first film with them. Does Nolan continue to deliver or has he dropped a big bomb?

Cillian Murphy has been a long-time collaborator with Nolan but this is the first time he is the main lead. He is PHENOMENAL as the titular character. He gives such nuance to his performance through body language and facial expressions alone to convey the emotion of his character. It is such a breath of fresh air from the normal yelling Oscar performances you see. He is genuinely perfect at Oppenheimer and if he doesn't get a nomination for his performance then I will be fuming! One surprising aspect of watching this film was how stacked the cast truly was. There are so many well-known actors in here that I didn't even know was even in the movie. Every supporting actor is terrific in their roles, even if it was a very minor role. The biggest standout amongst the supporting actors has got to be Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss. He gives a spectacular, compelling and even frighteningly realistic performance that makes his character stand out from the crowd. It is great to see him in a non-Marvel role and knock it out of the park. If he doesn't get a nomination for the best supporting actor then I will be also fuming!

This movie is 3 hours long but you won't even feel the length because of the amazing pacing. Despite being a drama, it never drags or bores you. It moves from scene to scene very quickly in a non-chronological order but you're never lost either. There are lot of scientific jargon which is to be expected as this is about the making of the nuclear bomb. However, the excellent screenplay makes these relatively understandable so that non-scientist can easily comprehend what's going on. There is some great political tension in the 3rd act as well which was handled masterfully. In terms of story, it is juggling a lot with Oppenheimer's early life, the making of the bomb and the aftermath. Despite this, Nolan does an amazing job of exploring the character of Oppenheimer which shows all aspects of him, including his flaws. The constant build-up and tension to the bomb is incredibly engaging!

Ludwig Goransson, the composer of Tenet, returns for this film. His music score is wonderfully haunting with his use of violins. His music score illustrates the horror of the actions of these scientists. Hoyte van Hoytema also returns as the cinematographer. His cinematography is visually stunning and this is thanks to the practical sets, natural lighting and real locations used. On that note, the use of practical effects and no CGI is just so awesome to see. Nolan thankfully didn't use a real nuke but he still replicates it practically and it certainly shows! The realistic explosion meant it didn't take us out of the movie as you don't question the look of the explosion as it is real. When the explosion occurs, it is weirdly captivating and frightening to look at just like it was for the characters. The sound design is also a highlight as the sound of the explosion is impactful and even terrifying. The sound itself is the jump scare and it works. The only nitpick I have with this film, which is a common problem in Nolan movies is sometimes I just can't hear what the characters are saying because of the weird sound mixing. It isn't as bad here as it was in Tenet but it is still a problem.

Overall, what an amazing movie from Nolan! This is a monumental and engrossing achievement from him. Nolan is one of the few directors whose name alone is enough of a reason to watch and Oppenheimer does not change that. He successfully made a 3-hour biopic drama, the most entertaining film of 2023. Oppenheimer isn't one of those Oscar-bait movies that were made to just win an Oscar. It was made to be enjoyable for everyone and that is why this film should win best picture. This is a must-watch for everyone as it is the best movie of 2023 so far!

Top 10 Movies of 2023

10. The Creator - It had a really poignant message about how far we can take technology. Can we replicate the human experience but have it be placed in a human body. It raises the questions about what the future of warfare will look like. Add in some of the most stunning visuals that have been seen in a sci-fi movie, and the final product leaves you in a debate. One that does not have a wrong answer.

9. Scream 6- Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera return as the Carpenter sisters, and this film takes the franchise to a new location. Changing up the scenery allowed for fresh thrills to be infused into this series and created a new level of tension. It was a very solid entry as it developed the legacy characters more and continued to give depth to the new core 4. Very good movie.

8. Talk to Me- One of the most original horror films that has been released in a long time. It plays on themes of loss, the supernatural, what happens after death and contact with the world beyond our own. It is well made, well acted and completely immerses you in this unique premise. This is a gem among other films that thankfully makes the list due to other films being pushed back beyond 2023.

7. The Killer- Fassbender is a revelation in this stylish action thriller. It may have a simple plot but sometimes all you need to do is breathe fresh life into something that has been done before. Fincher relies on the fast talking narrative and multiple set pieces to beautifully craft this story that plays out before us. It works and excels because you connect with the story and want to see how it plays out.

6. The Super Mario Bros- This film sat atop the list for a long while but ultimately found itself bumped down. It is such a fun experience for anyone who grew up with the games and a delight to share with the younger generation. This is the single movie from this year that has played the most in my household. It holds so much Nostalgia and brings such a smile to my face.

5. Air- Ben Affleck brings this story to life in such a compelling manner. For anyone who followed MJs career this story is not new. For those who have forgotten MJ used this platform to become the single most recognized athlete of all time. This story, this deal and how it played out changed the landscape of the name, image, likeness game. The Air Jordan symbol is truly iconic and now this film will fully cement that legacy within cinema. Absolutely the kind of film we need more of.

4. Oppenheimer- When Nolan's career is said and done there will be so many achievements we can look back upon. This one will be considered the most important due to the historical nature of it. The way Nolan paints the picture of how this all came to be is a crowning achievement in film making and could likely win the director a slew of awards. Nolan knows how to make a stunning film while getting the most out of his cast and he was some amazing talent to choose from here. 

3. Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse- Miles Morales is my favorite Spider-Man and this movie continues to showcase all the reasons why he is a phenomenal character. The sequel also added more layers to how the multiversal aspect of it all works. Easily some of the best animation we have ever seen. This film is on the short list for best picture at the Oscars and definitely deserves all the praise it is getting. 

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - No kid grew up in the 80s and 90s without knowing who the Ninja Turtles are. Now we have them present for the next generation and what a treat it was. There was so much story and world building in just over 90 minutes. You could feel the chemistry among the actors as well as they brought the brothers to life. The animation was once again on point, and the stellar cast overall helped bring the classic characters to life. This is the TMNT movie we have been needing for the last decade or more.

1 Killers of the Flower Moon- This 3.5 hour long Martin Scorsese epic told probably the most heartbreaking story of the year. What we see in this movie is the death and betrayal of the Osage people. Led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone this is the type of story that needs to be told to help educate people on the past. The Osage murders were about greed and corruption. Scorsese continues to make films with bold statements and that will help preserve the truth about history.

The Mosley Review: Poor Things

What if Dr. Frankenstein's creation was a success? What if the Bride of Frankenstein's monster became an actual person? A young woman with accelerated mental development and wanted to venture out into the world to experience life and womanhood. Well that's almost exactly what this original story was and I quite enjoyed the breath of fresh air it was. We've seen the coming of age, adulthood and life dramas and comedies, but this one was more on the level of delivering not only that type of story, but also a dark comedy that would either bore you or fascinate you. There was a great deal of fantasy elements that makes for a visual feast as we explore the odyssey in which the main character embarks on. There were some thought provoking and very witty dialogue between a number of characters and they all had unique perspectives on everyday life that apply today, even though this was a period film.

Emma Stone delivers an outstanding and evolutionary performance as Bella Baxter. To see her develop mentally from child to adult inside a grown woman’s body, was done so tastefully and almost effortlessly. She captures that ever curious wonder of the outside world and all that is to be learned. Her observational presence and wonderfully blunt delivery of sometimes hilarious dialogue was exceptional. Bella's exploration into the world's beauty and horror was the type of pure character growth that was captivating and sorely missed in modern films these days. I enjoyed experiencing her journey into becoming a woman and finding her freedom. Willem Defoe was excellent as her caretaker, creator and father figure, Dr. Godwin Baxter. He was a mad scientist that truly has a tragic backstory, but he doesn't let that stop him. I loved that he had a unique look on life and his studies into true human development was fascinating. The chemistry between Godwin and Baxter was heartwarming and not your typical relationship at all. It was a paternal relationship that developed intellectually. Ramy Youssef was great as Dr. Baxter's apprentice, Max McCandles. He was a young and enthusiatic student and I loved his genuine care for Bella. He was one of the purest and gentle souls of the film. Mark Ruffalo delivers a fantastic and manic performance as the very charming and petty womanizer Duncan Wedderburn. From moment he's on screen, you get the characters' intentions and how shallow of a human is. I loved that his confidence slowly gets chipped away by Bella's unwillingness to be controlled by his overbearing nature. It was a great affair that propelled the film along and their chemistry was excellent. Jerrod Carmichael was also excellent as the realist, Harry Astley. He drops some truth bombs on Bella on the world view of the rich and the poor and how society functions as a whole. His words may hold weight, but they were conflicting nonetheless. Christopher Abbott was ruthless and despicable as Alfie Blessington. I won't spoil his character too much, but I will say that he was absolutely the disgusting version of a man in that time period and he really shows his motives quickly. He acts as the final narrative payoff to a plotline that was almost an after thought thanks to the amazing performances all around.

The score by Jerskin Fendrix was fantastic, whimsical and unconventional as Bella Baxter herself. It truly brought out the comedic tone in a number of great scenes and underscores the experimental nature of the story. I loved the score the most during the moments Bella was at sea. Speaking of which, visually this film was stunning and almost dreamlike. I am a sucker for the usage of black and white to evoke the sense of time, but here its a character. The transition to vibrant colors as Bella explores gives the film a burst of life and also informs you of the characters feelings. Director Yorgos Lanthimos has undoubtedly made one of the best films of the year and the cast all around deliver outstanding performances. Top new-to-me films of 2022! Like last year, I watched a lot of great movies and picking only 10 was pretty wrenching. (At least they’re unranked; the list below is just in alphabetical order.) But you have to draw the line somewhere, and I feel good about these picks.

After Yang (2021) - While this kind of movie won’t be everyone’s cup of tea (pun intended), I love a slow, sad and beautiful sci-fi story. The central cast all give quiet but moving performances, and shot-for-shot, it was one of the most beautiful movies I saw this year (a year in which I saw a lot of beautiful movies).

Drive My Car (2021) - On my first watch, I was a bit skeptical the film was earning its runtime. It was tempting to backseat drive the opening section, especially. But by the last 45 minutes of this film, it was clear I wouldn’t change a thing. While it wasn’t my favorite of last year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees at the time, it’s the one that has been living in my brain rent-free ever since the credits rolled. Tremendous.

Cold War (2018) - Another one that has risen in my estimation the longer it’s been since I watched it. While I liked it plenty at the time, the longer I think about this one, the more devastating it becomes. Gorgeous and sad and perfectly balanced.

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) - Probably the least surprising entry on the list, but who cares? It really is that good. The chaos and the visual sense of play are great, but for me, it’s really the beating heart of the relationships between Evelyn, Waymond and Joy that makes this movie unforgettable.

Hero (2002) - I’d had a lot of people I respect recommend this movie to me, but it took me 20 years to finally get around to it. All of them were absolutely right. Visually stunning, yes, but also a beautifully constructed puzzle of a story, deployed to hit you right in the feelings where it counts.

Nope (2022) - One of only two films I saw in a theater in 2022, and I’m so grateful that I did. The cinematography and the sound design together made for a truly immersive (and stressful) experience. Great performances across the board, and a breath of fresh air for monster movies.

Palm Springs (2020) - This one also came highly recommended, even if it took me two years instead of 20 to get to it. I can see why. The freshest time loop story in ages, and Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti have truly fabulous chemistry. Almost certainly a rewatch candidate in the near future.

Paper Moon (1973) - A perfect film. Absolutely adored it.

Ran (1985) - I can’t believe Akira Kurosawa invented color cinematography in 1985, who knew? A masterful adaptation with a gutting ending.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) - Probably my favorite Shakespeare film adaptation of the last 20 years. The visuals are arresting, the dynamic between Washington and McDormand is affecting throughout, and the screenplay gets to the heart of the play while streamlining it in clever and thoughtful ways. Delighted that future 10th grade English classes will have something this good to watch when their teacher is out sick.

The quality improvement is primarily due to the pace of the game. While it is often slow-moving at times, the pace reminds anyone of the fact that Jacob Lee, the principal character, is a human being who reacts to situations in the same way that we or you would. This might be evident at the play's start when Jacob walks down the cargo hold to look into a ship's error with no care about the world but is surprised to find that an Outer Way Terrorist Group has breached the hull. Following the breach, players are shown the key controllers, which mostly consist of squeezing through small gaps, crouching, vaulting, and remaining silent. Naturally, when things go wrong, you're going to need to operate. When things go wrong, they do. After a few minutes of inspecting the hull, Jacob is forced to take a very strenuous sprint—which you can physically feel through the haptics—before he can help it become back into the bridge. However, before he can do so, Dani Nakamura, the protagonist of the game's opening scene, is shot across the seat window, breaking the airlock and pushing anyone who tries to claw their way back to their seat while the ship is ripped apart by the air. This truly is the scene where the recreation's very first blockbuster moment is very well shown, and honestly, it is wonderful. If you're going to play the world of horror, you come in expecting that the action will ramp up quickly, but The Callisto Protocol performs this effortlessly and with such sophistication that it captivated me personally immediately. This is coming from someone who can't endure playing games that are geared toward horror. Our website has good and cheap PS5 games.

The most significant possibility to take note of and be aware of in The Callisto Protocol stands out as the importance of perishing. This might seem odd in a video game, but the death computer animations are generally incredibly beautiful and unique. Every time a new type of enemy is encountered or a new location is explored, it is worthwhile to be killed a couple of times. Compilations can be found on the internet, but the spooky spectacle of Jacob acquiring torn limbs and his face being smashed is something that must be seen while actively playing. The Callisto Protocol is a wonderfully flawed video gaming phenomenon. In the narrow entrance hall of Black Iron are some strange development possibilities that do not provide the most enjoyable gaming experience. Some of the issues could be solved with much more gloss. It shines more than the rest when viewed as a simplistically vile horror game. Similar to the cult classic movie The Evil Dead 2, The Callisto Protocol is a very uncompromising game that has an AAA coating of paint and soul. The short duration of the game only adds to the fast and intense pace. Although it won't alter the genre of horror video games, this will certainly create its individual, dedicated community dripping with blood and guts.

An exhausting, grueling exercise in futility may be the best way to describe The Callisto Protocol, as regardless of the strength of my current resolve, I found myself frequently at risk and relished those brief moments when the game allowed me to breathe after another life-threatening battle.

Jihyun took in a breath of crisp fall air, the smell of fresh flowers misted over by rain enveloping him. Sunflowers. Lilac. Violets. This moment seemed too good to be true. Far too good, too pure, too lovely. Too full of light – of hope.

He couldn’t imagine a more picturesque moment. Walking the path to the nearby park with his beloved, he laced his hand seamlessly with Nala’s. Jihyun purposefully slowed his brisk pace to a leisurely stroll. If there was a way to freeze time, this would have been the perfect moment.

A momentary pause in both of their chaotic lives.

Nala was so grateful for the moment alone with Jihyun. Though they had been dating for quite some time, she wanted to spend each and every second she could with him. Being with him made her feel so comforted - so cherished. He was truly a rock she could lean on even in the worst of times and vice versa.

Nala couldn’t help but smile as she recalled the first time she met Jihyun - though then, she knew him as simply “V.” She had worked with Zen in a few theatre productions, met the RFA a few months later, and found herself falling for the tall, kind-hearted, soft-spoken photographer.

It took quite a while for both to come to terms with their feelings for one another: a slow burn, to say the least. But that’s what made the trust they shared in their relationship so unshakable.

“This is so beautiful, Jihyun.” Nala mused, nuzzling in closer to Jihyun’s side as they continued their walk to the park. “I’m surprised we’ve never visited before.”

The path in front of them was sprouting with all sorts of colors - red, blue, green, yellow.

Everything seemed brighter than normal, like a filter resembling a dream world.

A soft blush colored Jihyun’s cheeks as he squeezed Nala’s hand playfully.

“...I was hoping you’d like it. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been on this path. But aren’t the flowers here gorgeous?” His gaze scanned the nearby flowers, grateful they were still as vibrant as he remembered. With the eye damage he had suffered, he was lucky to have Nala to help him through the treatment process. He wondered what would be different if he hadn’t denied help at first - but he knew there was no room for regret.

Nala smiled to herself, returning the playful squeeze to the strong hang laced with her own.

“They really are. I can definitely see the appeal.” She commented with a soft laugh, recalling some of Jihyun’s past photo exhibits.

Most of Jihyun’s photos were of flowers - Lilies, roses, chrysanthemums. She considered herself immensely lucky to be with someone who has such an eye for beauty.

“...By the way, thank you for doing this. I really appreciate it.”

“No need to thank me. It’s my pleasure, love.” Jihyun’s voice rang in the deep, comforting timbre Nala adored. How had she gotten so lucky? She could hardly still believe that Jihyun was hers.

“It is my job, after all. You’re doing me a favor more than anything,” he continued, adjusting the lens of the camera that dangled in its case across his shoulder.

“I just can’t believe I’m making you take pictures for your job... On our date!” Nala joked light-heartedly, feeling giddy at the prospect of what the date would entail.

When it came to taking pictures, Nala oftentimes felt she was the farthest from photogenic. Everytime Jihyun took pictures of her, though, she felt and looked so powerful, feminine, and so entirely herself. He had a wonderful way of bringing out the best qualities of people in his photos.

“Hm... Would you believe me if I said that you are my absolute favorite person to photograph? How could that possibly be a nuisance to me?” Jihyun mused, stroking Nala’s hand with his thumb.

“I believe you.” Nala stood on her tip-toes to plant a gentle kiss on Jihyun’s cheek. The end of the path was nearing.

“Hey... before you start taking the professional ones, could we get one with just the two of us?” Nala considered, happy to see her words were followed by a smile from Jihyun.

“Of course.” Without a second of hesitation, he took his camera out of the case, holding it out to Nala. “I’ll let you do the honors.”

“Perfect!” Nala exclaimed, giddy that they would finally have an updated picture together. Especially with such beautiful scenery in the background.

Taking the camera, Nala extended her arm straight in front of her, angling the camera up so that both her and Jihyun fit in the frame. It was more difficult than she imagined - especially considering how tall Jihyun was in comparison. More than anything, Nala appreciated that Jihyun had trusted her with his camera like this.

She felt Jihyun’s hand rest on the small of her back - a gesture he knew Nala adored. Nala wondered if the blush that so obviously was coloring her cheeks would be seen in the photo. “Okay. On the count of three. One, two, three-”

As the word ‘three’ left Nala’s lips, Jihyun pulled Nala in close to his side - surprising her just enough for her smile to blossom as soon as the camera clicked.

A few minutes of walking later, the couple found themselves at the atmospheric park.

While he was with Rika, there were so many times Jihyun felt he needed to escape. To find a moment alone with his own thoughts. This was the place he often found solitude - true serenity.

He was grateful to finally be bringing the most important person in his life here - someone who brought him so much hope. This was a place he felt so at home.

“...Hm. There are weeds growing near these clovers. Let me just fix that real quick…” Nala bent down and plucked as many weeds as she could find. He loved how Nala so adorably demonstrated her passion for gardening.

Jihyun kept his fingers laced with Nala’s all the way until they approached the brick wall he designated for the headshot session.

The varied shades of red, browns, and burgundy would make for a perfect background. It would bring out the very subtle red highlights in Nala’s hair - the hints of blonde - her adorable freckles.

Jihyun ran through the monologue in his head he ran through with his clients, wondering how much he should keep the same or alter for his girlfriend.

He was delighted Nala was wearing her light pink cardigan; it emphasized her vibrant blue eyes even more than usual. The cut of the shirt emphasized her collarbones too - god, she is beautiful…

His mind began to wander - he began to visualize a little more than intended.

No. It’s time to be professional.

As Nala stood against the brick wall, it was obvious she was a natural when it came to posing. Zen had taught her well.

“All right, Nala. Can you give me a soft smile?” Jihyun instructed. The smile he adored so much appeared on her rose-tinted lips. Was she wearing the new lipstick he had bought her?

Click. Click.

“Great. Can you place your hands in your back pocket and roll your shoulder back slightly?” This also emphasized Nala’s bust ever so slightly. He tried not to let his mind wander any further than that.

Click. Click.

“Now give me some side eye…” At his words, her expression shone with a new color of sensuality. It was perfect for the camera. “...Good. Keep that!”

Click, click. Click, click.

“Wow. You are just breathtaking...” Jihyun took a moment to look through the pictures. Of course, she was stunning in every single one. He was right about the colors in the brick wall complimenting Nala well.

“...Okay. Hear me out. Look down, think of a secret, and look back up at me.”

“...A secret?” Nala raised an eyebrow at this. “I’m not sure I have many of those.”

“Oh, sure you don’t.” Jihyun teased playfully, adjusting the lens once more. A peal of laughter escaped the brunette’s lips.

Click.

Another beautiful, organic moment captured on camera.

“Okay, fine.” Nala pouted teasingly. Her gaze flickered to the grass beneath her feet. She took a moment to ponder.

And then, her gaze snapped up again. It rendered him speechless.

Click. Click.

Mesmerized, Jihyun took a few slow steps toward Nala. “...Tilt your head, just slightly to the right.” His own head tilted, wondering if just a minuscule angle change would define her jawline more.

“Do you mind if I adjust you, just a little?”

“Of course.” Her voice cooed.

Jihyun’s finger ever-so-delicately tilted Nala’s chin to the right and down towards the front angle.

There was little space between them now. The body he had memorized every inch of was just mere centimeters away.

The tension was palpable.

Without another word, Jihyun kissed Nala, both sinking effortlessly into the euphoria of the moment. Pulling away for just a moment, he waited for a sign from her to continue.

Nala pulled Jihyun in closer, pressing her lips against his. Her hand trailed from the nape of his neck into his teal-colored hair.

There was no denying they were all but pressed up against the brick wall now.

The kiss deepened - their breaths quickened - cheeks inflamed.

The reality of the public setting hit the two quickly. Laughs and explicit whispers were shared under hushed, giddy breath.

“...Would you like to finish this session somewhere a little more private, my love?”
