Everdoor
spiritfarer!Johnny mactavish x spirit!Reader x spirit!Simon Riley
I’ve been playing spiritfarer and I got inspired, this is mostly from Johnnys pov, kinda bittersweet ending?
Being the new spiritfarer wasn’t an easy task but when Johnny was choosen for it he knew he could handle the weight and burden of having to cross over the many spirits still stuck in the ethereal plane “Johnny” the previous spiritfarer Price grumbles lowly, Soap was quick to look up at the large creature like man “yes sir?” He replied, “make me proud” was all Price said as he crossed over into the Everdoor.
“Okay Riley” johnny huffed as he looked down at the German Shepard by his side wagging its tail in happiness “let’s go help some spirits hm?” He smiled as Riley barked in reply reaching his large hand down to scratch behind the dogs ears before turning to his controls setting his navigation to some random island on the map.
That’s where he met the first spirit who would board his ship, standing before him was a very large cloaked figure at the end of the pier staring out into the vast nothingness “hello?” He called out causing the spirit to quickly snap towards him “who are you, how’d you get here, how’d you find me” the spirit shot off rapid questions already on guard “I’m Johnny but you can call me Soap I’m the newest spiritfarer” he reassured putting his hands up to show he’s harmless “my boat took me here I’m guessing to bring you aboard” the cloaked figure held an aura of distrust as it reluctantly followed Johnny to his ship.
Once the cloaked figure set foot on his ship it’s cloak immediately vanished leaving a very broad and tall man with a skull mask staring back at him “I’m Ghost” the spirit grunted as he looked at his new surroundings before digging around his pocket to give Johnny his obal
Days and weeks passed as Johnny upgraded his ship, helped other spirits cross over while Ghost remained never growing close to any of the other spirits, always sticking to himself only really talking to Johnny or playing with Riley. “Phew another spirit in the Everdoor I’m on a roll aren’t I” he grinned at Ghost who was sat in his own house that Johnny had built for him “you remind me of my old team” Ghost mumbles as he looks lost in thought “always ontop of things, always together” that’s all Ghost said for the rest of the day deciding that he just wanted to be alone worrying Johnny just a bit.
He couldn’t stay worried for long as he docked at a new island filled with cherry blossom trees and strawberry bushes which he quickly harvested as he made his way up towards the lone cabin at the very top of the hill. “Hello?” He called out to the cloaked figure sitting at the lone bench over looking the sea “hello?” He called out again as he made his way towards them “hello Spiritfarer” you say still not turning towards him “I’m guessing you’ve come to take me away from my home” you inquire turning slightly to look at the large man “only if your comfortable with that” he reassures “well I mean it’s time isn’t it I can’t cling to the past forever” with that he watches as you rise up take one last look at your home and follow him to the ship once onboard your cloak melts away revealing your form standing before the only other spirit on the ship and Johnny “it’s been so long since I’ve been around others” you snicker
The three of you were thick as thieves growing closer and closer as the days turned to weeks then months everything was well sure you’d had a few times where Johnny was worried because you were struggling against an unseen foe, or when ghost would have what he could only guess were ptsd flashbacks that caused him to be catatonic for days, the good times outweighed the bad in his eyes as long as you both remained happy then he would keep trying to make you both better.
“Johnny” Ghost said one day after Johnny had fed him his favorite food of beans and toast “I think it’s time Johnny” Soap felt his heart drop into his stomach he knew this day was coming but he would never be ready for it “I’m ready to go Johnny” ghost said as he placed a calloused hand on Johnnys warm cheek “you know what to do” Johnny nodded a sadness burying itself in his heart as he set his navigation to take him to the Everdoor
“I’m gonna miss you Simon” Johnny watched as you said your goodbyes to your beloved Ghost hugging him tightly and pressing a soft kiss to his cheeks then his lips only letting go of his hands as Ghost boarded the small boat that would take him to his final resting place “ready” Johnny questioned his voice thick with emotion “ready” Ghost reassured as he gently placed a hand on Johnnys knee giving him a smile behind his skull mask.
“I’m grateful for everything in my life” Ghostst began as Johnny continued to row “grateful for my team, for the tragedies, for meeting you and them” Ghost smiled as he took off his mask wanted to feel the breeze on his face one last time “I’ve done bad things, and at one point I was sure I was a villain but when you look at me it makes me want to be a better person” Johnny sniffs but keeps a strong composure “I've never deserved you anyway... But I've loved you, and that won't stop even if I'm not around anymore. The ones who really love you never really leave you, you know” Ghost reassured as they stop in front of the large door Johnny quickly rushing to pull ghost into a tight hug inhaling his strong scent “I love you Simon” Johnny murmured as Ghost rose above him disappearing in a burst of light
It was lonely without Ghost on the ship but things had to keep moving, Johnny continued helping spirits cross over while you remained unmoving wanting to stay by Johnnys side for as long as you can teaching him lessons on how to open up to people, to love, to grieve properly. “Even when I leave you Johnny I’ll wait for you on the other side so you don’t have to cross alone” you smiled as he pressed a soft kiss to his lips before disappearing into your house.
The day johnny had been dreading had come you were ready to leave you had told him so as you were helping him into his orchards “I think I’m ready Johnny” you say as you put the fallen apples into a basket “I’m done fighting the inevitable I’ve had a wonderful experience seeing the world with you but it’s time for me to go” you gently cup Johnnys cheek and all he can do is focus on remembering your touch “you know what to do”.
Johnny couldn’t fight the few tears rolling down his cheeks as he helped you into the small boat watching as you sat across from him brilliant smile never leaving your face “you know I used it be such a logical thinker, everything had its place, everything was black and white, then when I got sick I started changing started learning a new way of living and I always wanted to pass that down to someone and I’m grateful it was you” you coo as you reach out to caress Johnnys cheek “The only lesson I have left is to show you what we're made of. Of ephemeral starlight. We're but a few particles of thought on the vast stream of consciousness” you sigh happily as you lean forward pulling Johnny into a soft kiss wrapping him up in your arms “I love you Johnny and I’ll be waiting” with that he watched as you burst into a ball of light taking your place amongst the stars next to his beloved Ghost.
Years passed Johnny lost track of how many souls he’d helped pass on but now his time was up it was his turn to crossover and he knew that you and Ghost would be waiting for him with open arms and happy smiles.

Spiritfarer Rant (It's Long)
Yeah. It's what the title says. I've been playing Spiritfarer a lot more recently, just wanted to share some shit my brain thought of. As a reminder, this is random shit I think of as I'm writing it and essentially rambling. Take all of my game analysis with a grain of salt. That said, play the game and be absolutely destroyed emotionally by the frog uncle.
(Putting the tldr here so people don't have to scroll)
Tldr: Spiritfarer is an excellent game that you should absolutely play. It pays attention to detail, has amazing characters and storylines, and is never boring for more than a few minutes (in my experience).
Holy shit this game is good. If you haven't played it yet (and don't mind getting absolutely destroyed emotionally by a cozy game) absolutely recommend. Absolutely. Play it. And face the consequences dear god this game is sad.
And that's coming from a person who is just so emotionally detached to media. I cannot remember the last time I cried over a book. (it was years ago, I remember exactly, I'm just a liar. Long story short, Xan from She Who Drank the Moon) The only spirits I cried over were Gwen and Stanley. (I think I cried over Stanley? Not sure.) But if the standard of the game is "I only cried twice playing this," you know that's sad. And honestly, It's kinda expected, what else can you really expect with a game about ferring spirits to their death while simultaneously being their therapist and friend?
But it's done so well. So well. I think this concept is so hard to pull off, and to pull it off to the degree that Spiritfarer does is insane. The attention to detail, the meticulous story-crafting, the way they made sure that every single character gets a backstory---even Stella's (the player) backstory is played out so well.
MINOR SPOILERS
Like, who came up with the genius idea of her sister coming on board and them traveling around and going through a photo album of Stella's life? Give that person a raise. And the way that the backstory isn't even revealed until relatively late in the game? I loved that. It's not thrown in your face, it plays out at your pace, and the whole shit with the owl and Lily and just ahhhh I loved it! Play the game.
SPOILERS OVER
Also, the way the game is interesting even when you aren't actively doing anything? There's almost always something to do. If there isn't, they give you something to do. You can always redo your boat design to eliminate those gaps again. You can always build more farms, you can always fish more, you can always do more.
And yes, it could get repetitive after a while, but they have quests! They have so many different and unique storylines for each spirit! And there's unique houses and flowers and likes and dislikes and preferences and personalities and gifts and emotions and moods and they even have different fucking hug animations! It's not just "oh there are people on the boat but they're just kinda there." NO. They are present at all times!
You'll be flying by and see someone call out to you. You'll be on your way to grab some crops and Beverly will give you some fireglow and tell you to make something spicy for her! You go onto an island and you see Atul picking berries! You go talk to Gustav, give him some food because he's hungry, hug him, talk to him and he gives you a vase! They are present, at every moment. Even with a large ship, an endgame ship with only a few spirits on it, it still feels full because you talk to them. You interact with them. You give them food---and you better not give Buck milk, because he's lactose intolerant, or Bruce and Mickey, well anything aside from junk food really, or Elana fine dining food---and you talk with them, and you share moments with them, you bond with them, and then suddenly they're gone.
Suddenly they're asking to be taken to the Everdoor because their time has come and you're devastated. Because now the character that you've spent so much time talking with, bonding with, enjoying talking to and interacting with, whoever it may be, is gone. And holy shit if that isn't one of the best representations of grief and loss that I've ever fucking seen I don't know what is. Now take that with a grain of salt because I don't have experience with grief or loss, and I can't speak for people who have had that experience. This game knows what it is, it knows what it wants to do, and it does it so fucking well. It lets you bond with these spirits, let's you get to care about them, learn their backstories, see how it affects them, how they change, and then you have to lead them to the afterlife, where you'll never see them again.
When playing the game, it really feels like every single detail is thought out, planned, cared about. The islands are amazing, the scenery is beautiful, have I mentioned the art style? It's amazing. I think the only game that could really beat it in terms of stunning art is Gris, but Gris belongs in a fucking museum sooooooo...
One big reason that I stopped playing Animal Crossing was because I felt like I was progressing too slow, wasn't getting enough done, or there wasn't enough to do. (Not saying Animal Crossing isn't a great game, just that it's not for me) Spiritfarer never has that problem. If a character storyline isn't progressing, work on another one! Stuck making a material? Move onto another project. Have too much time on your hands because your boat moves too slow? Gather more materials, talk with the spirits, make sure to stock up on their favourite foods so they're happy, or even take a break. There's never much of a lull, and while there are moments---mainly when sailing between islands---in which you can be bored, log off! Or just wait it out, it's never really more than a few minutes. For every quest that wants you to go somewhere and do something, there'll probably be one that wants you to make something: make a house, upgrade a house, make a production building, make this or that for one of Francis's errands, the list goes on.
And if you ever get bored with the main quests, or they're too complicated, or you can't find something (Henry the Acetate, I'm looking at you) (but I googled it for that), then there's civilian errands! You can do shit for the people in the towns if you want. Deliver records to these places, go through this mine, deliver a letter from Hummingberg to Nordsee. One of my favourite pastimes is cooking. I don't know why, but I just love cooking in this game. So, I've been trying to completionist it. (I won't, I'll give up 3/4 the way through and call it good enough) But even so, it just goes to show. There's really never a long period with something to do. The game stroked just the right balance between giving you things to do and giving you free time to do what you want.
I think I should end it here before this gets too much longer. But yeah! That's pretty much all of my thoughts on Spiritfarer. (Not really, but all of the ones for now) Amazing game, 5/5, absolutely recommend. (Please sponsor me Spiritfarer I would be great at it)
#spiritfarer#cozy games#indie games#Holy shit this game#its amazing#Play it#5/5 stars#This holds the record (with Gris I think) for the only game(s) that have made me cry#Play it play it play it#i love it#It's so sad but it's so good#spiritfarer game#Atul#Stanley#No but it's so sad when you've gotten to be friends with these guys and then they're dead#I know that's probably the worst way to have said that but eh#its fineeeee#But really#it's so good

Royai week 2023 fic recs
In honor of Royai week in the Fruits & Roots server, I chose to highlight some of my favorite Royai fics I gathered these past years (not many years, since I've been on AO3 for 2 years and a half only). Each day, I'll recommend a few fics in a particular setting
Day 2: What is this woman to you?" "My protector." - Alternate Universe fics
From historical to modern to space, there's alternate universes for all tastes with Royai!
Pretty Scars That Made Me Yours by Poppy Pelican / @poppy-pelican, rated T
Six years after the Promised Day, Mustang, Hawkeye, Alphonse, and Mei are brought together on a search for a man with no name.
There's Royai, there's Almei, slow-burn, there's Soulmates! (that's why I put it in AU fics, even if it's post-canon) (there's already a lot of fics for my post-canon fic rec list)
[fic + podfic] Elegies and Bittersweet Odes by goneadrift, klainelynch, theaceofdragons / @goneadrift @klainelynch @theaceofdragons
It's a familiar story: The lost loved one, the alchemist's gambit, and the high, high price. But her stratagem is different, and her price is paid not in flesh but in endless, lonely years. She watches him live and die, and she finds herself unable to do either. And yet, through lives and deaths and centuries, love can carry you home.
I cried in my car listening to that podfic, and cried again when I read the text. That's all you need to know how good this fic is
and we're the only ones dancing on the sun by starsinherblood / @jedidragonwarriorqueen
When Rebel demolitions expert Roy Mustang is stranded on a hostile planet after a mission, it's up to X-wing pilot Riza Hawkeye to rescue him.
A Star Wars AU that I loved!
in my darkest hour by lantur / @lantur
Three months in the Grumman-Mustang presidential ticket, as told by Senator Mustang's Chief of Staff and the man who would be Vice President of the United States.
There's drama, there's politics, and there's lantur's writing that takes us in the story and doesn't let us go until the end
Ex tempore by Tasia (ruikosakuragi)
Historical/Gangster AU. New York, 2000. Riza Hawkeye comes into the possession of a family heirloom upon her grandfather's final words: "Keep him safe." Confused and grief-stricken, Riza finds herself pulled in time to Prohibition Era New York, recovering from a gang-related firefight under the care of Dr. Roy Mustang, a reluctant member of the Hughes-Mustang crime family and a self-proclaimed guardian to two boys by the names of Edward and Alphonse.
Time and danger don't apply when they must find each other. An enthralling AU!
Sneezes by Starship_Phoenix / @starship--phoenix
AU where every time one person sneezes, their soulmate sneezes. A few Royai scenarios.
Short and sweet soulmates AU!
what will you leave behind? by klainelynch / @klainelynch (yes, again!)
Riza Hawkeye spent her entire life trying to make the world a better place. In the afterlife, she has been tasked with caring for the souls of the dead: helping them with final requests and unfinished business from their life on earth. As she helps others prepare to leave through the Everdoor, Riza will discover what she’ll be asked to leave behind as the new Spiritfarer.
I literally gave this AU a tag for my reblog of each update: #it's monday it's time for my weekly cry. But it's so good and thanks to it I played Spiritfarer and I can tell you it's an amazing game (also really moving, like the fic!)

AITA for leaving without saying goodbye to my niece?
Hey there, Internet! I haven’t used one of these thingies in ages, so I’m sorry if I make any mistakes. I read that I’m not supposed to say any names, so you can call me A! (M, adult.) You see, I happened to pass away somewhat recently. And who do I meet? My lovely niece, S! (F, young adult.) She even got herself a boat, and a job ferrying people like me around! What are the odds, huh?
When I say that S is amazing, I really mean it. She did so much for me, like building me a house, bringing me to islands to collect wood and berries, and she even made me pork chops!! Those are my favourite! What was I saying? Oh yeah. S did a lot for me. But despite that, I was unhappy deep down. You see, I was constantly reminded of my friends, my wife, and my daughter. I just wanted to see them again, but I knew that I wouldn’t. Not for a long time, at least. And that thought weighed me down immensely.
Eventually, a part of me knew that it was my time to go. I know that it’s S’ job to help me with that, but I could tell that this whole ‘escorting souls’ thing was already hard enough on her. The last thing I wanted was for S to have to say goodbye to her dear ol’ uncle. It would break her heart!
So just the other day, I asked S if we could throw a big family-style dinner for all of the spirits on board. And you know what she did? She cooked all of the food herself, and brought us to this nice little island town! S really is a great host, and an even better niece. We all had a great time at the dinner, but when it came time for us to hit the sack, I snuck off her boat. Didn’t wanna cause a fuss, you know?
Now, how did I get to the Everdoor? It was sort of a blur, but here I am. I didn’t think that I’d regret my decision, but I’m starting to wonder if I should have just let S take me here. I wanted to get this all off of my chest before I moved on which is why I’m posting this now.
So…AITA?
Edit: I don’t think I’ll be able to bring this thing to the other side with me so I can’t see the verdict. Maybe S will see it instead? Who knows!

i just finished spiritfarer, actually properly finished. its impossible for me to talk about this game purely subjective bc its so. close to me. and my lived experience. putting this big long thing under a keep reading, warnings for discussion of death and whatnot as thats the prominent theme of the game, and spoilers for the game probably
please excuse the messy, rambly writing, im very tired and very very emotional about this sad boat game and just need to get my thoughts about it down before i go crazy
impossible to not cry at the end. i bought this game around 2019 on my switch, fresh after two or three big familial deaths. picked it up here and there but could never get myself to the end, either being to busy or it being too much for me. i finally found some time now, after owning it on PC for a year or two, to sit down and let myself experience it.
this game treats the passing of loved ones with such respect and care and the grief that follows so beautifully. even the characters i didnt much care for i felt heavily about when it was their turn through the everdoor. it blends this grief with gameplay mechanics so well, and doesnt ever let you forget those close to you. almost every character either has a resource you can collect because of them, their spirit still there when you need more of it, or theyre the ones who had you build the crafting station to make materials and youre reminded of them when you step in the door. i found myself making sure i had everyones favorite foods stocked in my inventory well past their exit. and to really hammer it in, everyone gets their profile marked in the stars when theyre gone.
stella's job is to take care of people, but shes always felt like a vessel-type character to me, as ive had my dealings with the loss of loved ones and those around me and found it incredibly easy to wear her shoes.
moments that really stood out to me were atul not letting you take him through, you just find his flower on its own. so heavily touched me, a man whos only ever cared for you not letting you see his struggles because he knew thats all youd devote yourself too. stanley, letting the weird kid take it the only way a kid could, curious but scared but you were holding his hand. i cant even begin to talk about daria, shes new to me and i can only hope no one can relate to her story but feel for her just the same. gwen, god i could go on about gwen. all the characters feel so lively, so real, all dealing with whats ending them as best they can.
the one that got me the most, though, was astrid. my grandmother on my moms side passed in 2019, so already getting me with a grandmother character but astrids story and motivations remind me so much of her and one of her lines at the everdoor, "dont forget me or i'll haunt you" sounds exactly like somehting my grandmother would say. tears pouring out of my eyes only beat by the end of the game as a whole. such a beautiful story
and beautiful game, too. breaking from the sad stuff for a bit to say the art and music are so beautfully crafted and touching, every character design and choice of animal so perfectly selected. look at darias profile how can you not fall in love immediately. look at her :3
just. please play this game if you have any sort of feelings about grief and loss. its touched my heart several times in the years since 2016 after lots of familial death and covid. its a bunch of different games at once, largely a resource management and crafting game but the story is so well written and the visuals are beautiful and im soon to buy the soundtrack because i always need it with me
this game means so much to me and will forever be on my mind, one million thank yous and tears to thunder lotus games and everyone involved.

parts: 1, 2, 3, ...
mit mystery hunt 2024 writeup 1: asphodel
it's my mitmh24 writeup! part 1.
most people post their hunt writeups all in one take, like they've already done this before and seen the whole hunt or whatever. given that we're still postsolving and etc, i'm gonna be different by splitting mine into posts about individual puzzles.
and no better way to start than with asphodel, a puzzle from the second round of this year's mystery hunt. have a look yourself before reading on - spoilers follow!
i'll start by saying that although there were technical issues, the puzzle content was great right from the get-go. we had an enormous puzzle width early on, and a lot of the stuff i saw struck me as very cool and modern
anyway, onto the puzzle: so everyone has that one puzzle whose theme falls into their exact niche and no one else's, right? for me, that was this puzzle.
the banner at the top of the puzzle is a simplified drawing of the everdoor from the Thunder Lotus video game Spiritfarer. the game is about nurturing a small group of wandering spirits in their final hours until you have to say goodbye. it's got that kind of indie game soul behind it that i really love - plus, the movement is really fun.
knowing the theme, we dove straight in
how it worked was: there's a huge grid with flowers. these are spirit flowers, representing each character from the video game. there's some blanks at the bottom that fit the names of each flower, with one letter marked for extraction:
seeing HOME NAMES immediately gave me an idea of what the huge grid is all about. one of the things you do in Spiritfarer is build a huge boat with buildings on it that serve as home spaces for the spirits. they're all different sizes and you end up tetris-ing them all together:
it turned out that, for each of the spirit flowers, the home building of the associated character from the game fits perfectly in this grid. additionally, we saw that for each of them, there was exactly one instance of their corresponding flower within their house (highlighted in yellow):
(i would show this construction in the actual game, but i don't own the game myself - and i think it's impossible anyway because your boat has to have a ton of auxiliary buildings on it at this point)
extraction isn't too far from here: you can map the names of the houses (lodge, bungalow, sanctuary, etc) onto the flowers in the grid, and then the highlighted yellow flowers spell the answer. horray!
i really enjoyed seeing and working through this puzzle. i'm biased from being the resident Spiritfarer expert in our group, but if there was going to be a hunt puzzle about Spiritfarer, having it be about jigsawing boat buildings into a grid was probably the coolest thing to have done with it. and i'm very thankful it was early in the hunt so that it was easier to sink my teeth into it (even if i had to do so while still at work)
the ride was a little bumpy, because i forgot that the houses aren't rectangular despite being listed with rectangular dimensions on wikis, and the order in which to read the extracted letters wasn't intuitive, but we got there!
the rest of this round was fun, too. the meta was nice and simple - we locked it in very quickly after we had enough answers to make it work.

ummm tell me more about that frog guy!!
also like if you're super uncomfy at the party you should leave!!! it's wht i would do lol
I will leave soon it’s a celebration for our seniors so I feel bad leaving so early but I’m absolutely not staying super long 👍
Ok Atul!!!!!!! He is such a special little guy. He’s the player character’s uncle and just such an amazing one at that. He’s peak undiagnosed adhd adult. He loves keeping busy and helping others, especially through woodworking! He teaches you how to cut wood and helps you harvest it! He also is so easy to make happy bc he will eat literally anything and be happy about it. He also plays his little flute and his tune is so cheerful and catchy. He’s so animated when he speaks. I love watching him interact with other passengers. And he gives great hugs
He was my favorite passenger which is why his departure hurt so badly. All the spirits you carry eventually ask you to take them to the Everdoor so they can finally pass on in peace. Except Atul. After having a feast with some other passengers he just disappears. Gone. No goodbye. No closure. Just a spirit flower in his room and a frog constellation in the sky.

I'm playing Spiritfarer and it's such a gorgeous game
But iTS SO FUCKING SAD
You play as a girl named Stella who takes over for Charon and become the next boatman and oh my god
You find different characters on different islands and do a bunch of tasks for them and then you can welcome them onto your boat, build them a place to stay and what not
And you learn about their lives, relationships and eventually their deaths
And then you send them through the Everdoor which is just moving on for them
ITS DEVASTATING, I GENUINELY MOURN THESE GUYS WHEN THEY GO. IT MAKES ME SO FUCKING SAD, IVE CRIED SO MUCH 😭😭😭
Anyways 😕 I hate this game 😡💥 (I'm devastated, please send help)
-🐧
That sounds both wonderful and devastating Jesus Christ 😭 I need to check it out bc you’ve made me curios now but also just for research purposes are there any hot fishermen in the game 👀

Okay so. Spiritfarer (yes my brain failed be nice).
In Spiritfarer you play as Stella, a Spiritfarer, charged with ferrying the deceased to the Everdoor. Befriend and care for spirits before releasing them into the afterlife. Spoilers removed, thanks Spiritfarer wiki. Great game. I only cried eight times over my favorite lesbian garden snake (this is not a joke). Anyway. Spiritfarer uses a more modern setting in the living world while being more fantastical in the game. I am just going to fudge details because who cares? Not me. I want amazing vibes. So uh here's Doc's character I've come up with and retooled because I have a mighty need:
A silvery Beveren rabbit with a scar across his nose which is covered mostly by a pair of glasses, unless they slip down. He can be slightly curmudgeonly, but only slightly and seems very in-tune to when someone is in need of some "perfect bedside manner". When irritated or frustrated, he'll start tapping his foot as an unconscious action. He'll interject himself into any fight, even when told to stay out of a disagreement and will give his opinion. He's got a soft spot for children and those who are much younger than him. Though he has a pompous attitude, it easily switches off to being reckless if it involves helping someone else. Preferred foods are baked goods and when in a good mood, he'll entertain the ship with his balalaika. In life, Doc worked in a busy hospital and violated protocol frequently to take care of his patients to the best of his ability. Rules were a "suggestion". It was in breaking these rules that he contracted antibiotic resistant tuberculosis.
I...have no icons and I have no artistic talent and honestly I don't care but yeah that's what I got right now. So does it suck? What are we thinking?

sorry if you're not taking requests but I saw that you were doing variations of Yuu (Yuuniverse if you will) and I just couldn't pass up the chance Spiritfarer!Yuu
if you don't know, Spiritfarer is a Thunder Lotus game where you the player are taking on the Grim Reaper's job because they retired (your cat is also there with you for some reason). And you go along traveling on your boat that's basically a luxury spot for the spirits you find along the way. (lil bit of spoiler for anyone that plans to play: you also get clues that point to you knowing the spirits before you died) There's also this huge Owl thing that shows up sometimes, I've yet to find out if they're good or bad. And whenever you take a spirit to the Everdoor (the place where they finally pass on) a constellation appears to remind you of them.
Sorry if this is really long but I love this game and there's really not enough content or people that know about it
Hello there anon! I (coughfinallycough) checked out the playthrough of Spiritfarer and I have to say that the visuals are super heccin gorgeous! The atmosphere and music too! It reminds me of Studio Ghibli for some reason. It just has the vibes. Y'all should check the game out if you have the time.
Though, I’ve tried to think of something for it, I can’t seem to get my brain working. I guess it’s mostly because of the setting since if Yuu were to be the Spiritfarer and yet were transported to the Twisted Wonderland then it’d be kind of difficult for them since there’s a conflict between their job and being stuck in another world. Seeing that, y’know, it’s their job to care of the spirits and take them to the afterlife so if they ever went MIA then I doubt that’d spell anything good for the spirits. Also because the location of the game takes place mostly on a ship drifting in a body of water from what I’ve seen so far.
But then again… hmmm, I guess it could work if Spiritfarer!Yuu retired and found themselves in Twisted Wonderland. This is an au, afterall… Ah, well, I’d have to wait and see if I can make something since I’m not that far in the playthrough, hahaha.
Though, if anyone has anything to add to this, you’re free to do so! (^▽^)

i am now thinking about a proper spiritfarer au, so enjoy some ramblings(spoilers for spiritfarer + a lot of talk about death + mentions of alcoholism. be warned)
- thomas is dying in the hospital either due to an illness or a fatal train crash. hes almost fully gone and theres no saving him, but hes not ready to move on yet. as a result, he has a vivid dream of himself ferrying the spirits of his departed friends/loved ones so he can find his own peace before passing
- annie, clarabel, and sir topham hatt are alive and by thomas' bedside. they take the place of stella's mother and sister
- lady takes the place of hades. as thomas takes spirits to the everdoor, she appears to soothe him over his inevitable fate/encourages him to continue his mission.
- the first spirit thomas encounters is percy, his childhood best friend who passed away suddenly in a car accident. they had been inseperable in childhood, but started drifting apart as age and responsibilities took their attention elsewhere. thomas always wanted to reconcile with percy, but never got the chance. his nickname for thomas is 'old buddy.'
- the second spirit is gordon, one of thomas' grumpy co-workers whom he was very close to. he died from a rapid onset of liver damage as a result of his heavy drinking after henry passed. thomas saw gordon as a parent figure and frequently sought him for advice. his nickname for thomas is 'ankle biter.'
- the third spirit is henry, gordon's husband and another of thomas' co-workers. he died in the infamous flying kipper crash, leaving a distraught husband and family behind. thomas used to go on fishing trips with henry, and also saw him as a paternal figure. his nickname for thomas is 'sprout.'
- the fourth spirit is james, thomas' uncle. he died after taking a drunken fall from his apartment balcony. he always prided himself in being the 'fun' uncle, bringing thomas treats and toys as a kid and taking him out to get ice cream. he also used to play dress-up with thomas, letting him pick out outfits and jewelry from his wardrobe to try on. his nickname for thomas is 'showstopper.'
- the fifth spirit is edward, a history teacher at thomas' college. they became close after finding a shared love for railroad history, and edward helped to tutor thomas on occasion. he died from pneumonia, as he was too old to fight it off. his nickname for thomas is 'dear student.'
- the sixth spirit is toby, an old family friend. he died after getting trampled by an escaped, ornery bull while doing work on his farm. thomas would visit toby's farm often, and toby would either sneak him treats or let him help collect eggs and milk cows. henrietta, toby's wife, would bake cookies as a payment for all of thomas' hard work. thomas and percy used to play in the small orchard next to the farm and eat the apples there. his nickname for thomas is 'greenhorn.'
- the seventh spirit is montague, one of thomas' older cousins. he drowned in a flash flood while trying to rescue his husband, donald. he worked on a different railway before moving to thomas', and they became closer as they worked together often. he picked up the nickname 'duck' from his walking gait, which looked like a waddle. his nickname for thomas is 'little blue.'
- the eighth and ninth spirits are donald and douglas--donald was duck's husband, and douglas was his twin brother. the two both died on the same day; one of old age, the other of a broken heart. thomas didn't know them very well, aside from the occasional meeting when he was with duck. donald was the more wisecracking of the two, while douglas was slightly more serious. douglas often talked of his own husband oliver, who had passed away suddenly from cancer--thomas had never met him in person. they both call thomas 'wee steamie.'
- oliver takes the role of buck--a spirit who has already passed on, and is there mainly to keep thomas company as he nears the end of his journey. he takes the form of a phoenix and his spirit flower is a hyacinth. he's supportive and caring, and acts exactly like how douglas described him, even if thats not how he actually was in life. he calls thomas 'kiddo.'
#chirps#ttte#ttte au#spiritfarer au#made the first post for funsies and then my brain said 'actually flesh out this concept Right Now'

So I really enjoyed this one. Its a little rough around the edges but goddam did its emotional beats hit hard. Spiritfarer is on PC/xbox/gamespass, PS4, Switch.
In Spiritfarer the protagonist, Stella, takes over for Charon in the role of granting spirits last wishes before ferrying them into the afterlife. Through the slow pace of the game you build emotional bonds with your lovingly designed and written friends and each one goes through their own little arc before being ferry’d to the Everdoor.
The feel of the game is where this one shines. Many games have advertised to me “playing like a Studio Ghibli movie” but Spiritfarer’s the first to do it for me. The liveliness of the animation, the wondrous art direction, and the score. The music for this game moved me emotionally in ways I haven’t felt since Breath of the Wild. Every Everdoor sequence, even for characters I felt less for, sticks with me. The characters and even how you come across them? A+. S tier designs. Their weaker designs are still a solid A. Also: dedicated hug button.
Mechanically, the game is a farming/gathering sim atop a boat. For me I have difficulty with the direction of these games. I get bored and lose motivation. In Spiritfarer all your farming/crafting is done as you move place to place, and I really enjoyed the whole “build your own lil town vertically” element as some residents liked being closer to others or further from others. One needed to be ground level. Then I had my own preferences on what shop buildings I wanted where. The boat planning was the strongest mechanical aspect of the game, the one I enjoyed the most.
The game does have its shortcomings. Like I said its good, its just rough around the edges. Progress can be frustrating to make at times. Sometimes you just want to hurry it all up to get to the next bit faster. The pacing feels muddier after the first 1/3 of the game and I found myself at the last 1/4 trying to force my way thru it just to get to the end. Even then, I found the end of the game to have an emotionally satisfying payoff. It hit good.
I absolutely recommend giving Spiritfarer a try. Just be ready for a slower paced, longer indie game and don’t go too nuts on hoarding. Next time I play it I want to gather resources as the game dictates and not spending hours hoarding resources I didn’t use. All in all its an emotional wonderment and its made me feel things other games haven’t. I have a feeling this one’s going to stick with me. And it should.
