"Colombia’s congress has voted to change a law that allowed minors to get married with parental consent.

The proposal would make the minimum age for marriage 18, and seeks to protect the rights and development opportunities for minors. It still must be signed into law by President Gustavo Petro.

Currently, the country’s civil code allows person as young as 14 years old to get married with parental consent.

The initial proposal to reform the law – presented in 2023 – used the slogan “they’re girls, not wives” and aimed to prevent young girls from being forced to marry, to be subject to different forms of violence and to miss out on education and development opportunities.

“Minors are not sexual objects, they’re girls,” congresswoman Clara López Obregón said in a statement after the proposal was greenlit.

Child marriage remains a widespread practice worldwide and affects around 12 million girls per year, according to the UN’s agency for children, UNICEF.

But there’s been a global drop in child marriages over the past few years, according to the agency’s statistics. “Ten years ago, one in four young women aged 20 to 24 was married as a child. Today that number has fallen to one in five,” UNICEF said.

In Latin America, poverty is the main factor leading to minors getting married, according to UNICEF."

The moral of the Prisoner's Dilemma tells us this:

No choice is ever made alone.

Whenever you are making a choice you are not just choosing for yourself. You are also choosing for every single other person who gets put in the same situation and thinks the same way you do.

As a refresher, in the Prisoner's Dilemma (this is not the exact version but it gets the point across) :

You and an accomplice burglarize a mansion. Neither of you get caught during the burglary but you both later get caught with the stolen goods. You and your partner in crime are held in separate cells. You can't talk to each other, but you can assume that whatever they do to one of you they're doing to both of you.

A detective comes into your interrogation room and tells you how things are going to be: if neither of you confesses, you're both going away to prison for 2 years for stolen contraband, they've got you at least for that. However, if you turn states evidence, that is defect against your partner and rat them out, you'll get to plea bargain and get out with no sentence, while your partner gets stuck with a 5 year sentence. Finally, in the event you BOTH rat reach other out, that you both defect, you'll both go away for 3 years (half of 5 rounded up).

This is the Dilemma: should you cooperate or defect?

Let's think about things only from your own perspective for a moment:

If your partner defects, then you'll either serve 5 years (cooperate) or 3 years (defect).

If your partner cooperates, then you'll either serve 2 years (cooperate) or 0 years (defect).

Therefore, regardless of whatever your partner does, you're left with a better outcome (for yourself at least) if you always

DEFECT

But remember:

Even though you and your partner aren't able to communicate with each other, you can safely assume you're being told the same things (acab).

You're also roughly the same level of intelligence and think along relatively the same lines (since you both thought it was worth committing the crime together and you both got caught the same way).

Hence, whatever conclusions you reach logically, your partner is likely to reach the exact same conclusions.

This means you must assume that whatever you come up with is going to be mirrored by your partner.

This narrows your possible outcomes of the situation from 4 [ (C,C) = (-2 years, -2 years), (C,D) = (-5,0), (D,C) = (0,-5), (D,D) = (-4,-4) ] (I've used negatives here to indicate these are bad outcomes) down to just 2 [ (C,C) or (D,D) ]. Either you both cooperate, or you both defect.

With that in mind, the choice becomes obvious: you should

COOPERATE

(One small thing to note here, if you think about the problem from a collective standpoint instead of an individual one you can more easily and simply get to the same conclusion. The overall payoff for each outcome is (C,C) = -4, (C,D) = -5, (D,C) = -5, and (D,D) = -6, so the best outcome is obviously the one where you both cooperate which means to make it work you need to cooperate.)

Again, the key takeaway here is that, regardless of whatever you choose,

A person with the same general knowledge, intelligence, and reasoning abilities as you will make the exact same choices

So when you decide not to vote, it's not just YOUR vote that isn't getting cast. It's also everyone else who thinks the same way.

When you don't vote, you ensure that everyone who thinks like you doesn't vote either, and when you DO, they do TOO.

You are effectively your own voting bloc

Use this knowledge wisely.
