I love libraries.
I'm browsing the WWI shelves (as you do) and notice a very old book about the war. I glance at the first pages that talk about how one day the war will be over and we'll look at this place and not see any signs of the battlefield.
Then it hits me. And I check the publishing date.
This book was printed before the war's end. Not written. Printed. The physical object was created in 1918, while the war in question was raging and the end was as yet uncertain.
Now I'm standing on the other side of the apocalypse, with this physical link to that era in my hands. I'm living proof that the war did end and life did go on and we can all look at the end of the world as a long-ago memory.
Reading old books is cool enough, connecting our minds and hearts through the ideas of people who lived long ago, but there's something extra profound about holding a copy of the book that comes from the time that it was written. It's a physical link between the past and the present connecting me to those long-ago people. A piece of the past come into the future that gives me the chance to almost take the hand of some long-ago reader, to hold something they could have held, connecting not just mentally but physically to their era, a moment of connection across more than a century.
Excuse me while I go weep.
#books#history is awesome#of course i checked it out#i had no real intent to read wwi non-fic but i couldn't just leave my new friend there it'd be lonely#i want to break out in tears every time i look at it#it's so stupid but sometimes something stupid just kicks you straight in the heart and you just gotta deal#it's old front line by john masefield#i know nothing about it except thinking the author's name sounded vaguely familiar#also the interior design is fantastic#these old books know how to use white space and make something super readable#if you must know i was in the wwi section because i was at the history museum the other day#and saw a local author had a book of wwi letters#thought i'd see if the library had it#looked at the selection of non-fic surrounding it and thought of the wwi persuasion#saw many books that could be useful#and thought 'oh no this looks like fun'#it won't go anywhere i know i won't be able to focus long enough to do real research#but darn if it wasn't an appealing little daydream

started thinking about the okipara museum artwork and i just realized what flower 18!kara is holding in it.

those are alstroemeria, which can mean perseverance and yearning for the future in hanakotoba....
#the thing that has me fucked up about this is that i actually accociated the same flower w/ hs!kuroba b4 i realized this#like i literally drew something w/ them involving that flower the other day. fuckin OKAY.#what if we experienced the same struggles with confidence and the flower that represents us hints towards preserving into a brighter future#kuro & kara being so similar in high school makes me want to gnaw my hands off i'm going to lose it#i haven't pinned down adult kara's flower yet tho#i thought it could be a balloon flower but looking at how the petals flare out i think it's something else#also apparently there was a massive artbook released for that museum?? i kinda want it...#i might see if i can get it through the proxy service i like#it'd be awesome if these illustrations were in there bc there aren't really high quality versions of them...#i'd try identifying everyone else's flowers too but that's hard when the details get kinda lost when up-scaling the image#osmt#karamatsu#18matsu#flower akatsuka#mj rambles

Inside the dash to save the Getty Villa from the Palisades fire: a timeline
"The Getty Villa, the museum built by oil tycoon J. Paul Getty and home to thousands of priceless antiquities, activated its emergency operations center in response to the fast-moving Palisades fire at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday. At 11:44 a.m., fire could be seen over the ridge, less than one mile away. By 12:27, flames had reached the property.
Fast-moving, wildly unpredictable and catastrophic in the damage it caused along a vast swath of prime coastline, the Palisades fire ultimately spared the Villa and its more than 44,000 objects, including many Roman, Greek and Etruscan relics dating from 6500 BC to AD 400.
J. Paul Getty Trust President and Chief Executive Katherine E. Fleming described for The Times the scene on the ground and how she and her staff worked from a conference center-turned-war room at the Getty Center in Brentwood, about 10 miles away — all while 16 staff members remained at the Villa to implement emergency protocols...
...Fleming offered a riveting play-by-play of the day’s events. The staff members who remained at the Villa worked in emergency response, facilities, security and communications — each highly trained in emergency preparations. When the fire broke out, the biggest concern was protecting the collections from the damaging effects of smoke. The double-walled construction of the galleries provided significant protection, and at 10:45 a.m., the dampers — small valves that regulate airflow in a building’s HVAC system — were turned off, as was the air conditioning. The staff still smelled smoke, so the museum doors were sealed at 11:04 a.m. The smoke became overwhelming by 11:15, and at 11:20 the staff was sent an email alerting them that the Villa was closing..." Keep Reading
#this article is so nerve-wracking and awesome#a wonderful example of a great emergency action plan and response too#even landscaping to help mitigate the spread of fire! preventive conservation at its finest 😤#museums#the getty villa#los angeles#california#news#history#anthropology#archaeology#art#culture#california wildfires

For all my fellow chronically ill/disabled buddies I cannot recommend walkers enough as a mobility aid, especially the ones with a seat and storage, like not only it is great at the mobility aid part, it's multitudes more supportive than a cane for example, but if you get the right type you also have a chair with you all the time so if there isn't any seats around you don't have to worry because you already have one, and then you also don't have to worry about carrying around a heavy bag (which for me at least can be awful) because you can just put it on the seat or in the storage below the seat, and you don't have to worry about making your bag too heavy because you aren't gonna be carrying it so you only have to think about how much stuff will fit, so you can have lots of water and snacks and medical stuff if you need.
There are some downsides of course, like stairs are a bit of an issue but most places have ramps or elevators if the stairs are like to get to another floor, and if you use it for too long at a time it'll start to hurt your hands (to be fair about this one tho the only times this happens was during conventions where I'd be using the walker for like 8+ hours straight with very few breaks, which only shows how amazing a walker is because without it I can only walk for like 15-20 minutes before needing to stop, even less if I'm not pushing through/ignoring the pain), and they can also be a bit bulky so transporting them can be a bit of an issue sometimes.
So if you're looking into mobility aids then consider getting a walker.
#disability#disabled#chronic illness#chronically ill#mobility aid#walker#getting a walker has improved my quality of life so much#like I can actually go out and do stuff now#if I didn't have it I could never go to a convention#like I'd need to leave within an hour if I'm being generous#but with it I'm able to stay for 8+ hours#and even for more mundane stuff it's awesome#like if I want to go to a museum#or get groceries#or go to a mall#and so much other stuff#I love it so much

NaPoWriMo #19: A poem recounting a historical event
To a Man Commenting Upon Lincoln's Homely Features
Abraham Lincoln knew quite well He had never been beauty-graced. When Douglas met him in debate And told him he was quite two-faced, Old Lincoln made a quick reply With his usual sense of fun: "If I'd another face to wear, Do you think I would wear this one?"
#napowrimo 2024#poetry#history is awesome#presidential talk#abraham lincoln#the man in the title is my father#who did say 'lincoln was a pretty homely guy wasn't he?' when looking at a wall of lincoln portraits in the springfield museum#which gave me the perfect chance to share this anecdote#incidentally my dad told me springfield was his favorite part of the road trip#and having me there to tell him all the extra historical details much improved the experience#so...success!#it would have been fun to use this prompt to do a full-on historical poem#but when i'm three days behind i have to go for the quick and easy#i'm just not gonna look at the atrocious meter in this one you can't make me

I’m your first patron Saint of creation! I think about Frankenstein all the time so I think your quiz worked.
!!!! whoo!!! gonna be so honest i was stressed out watching the quiz stats for the first few hours there cause the stats for creation sat at zero percent for so long... but. y'know. i think that creation has lower stats cause it requires you to make some of the brighter and more positive choices and it's not always clear where any positives are in that quiz even If you are a naturally bright and optimistic person... anyway. delightful to see all the people getting the creation result cause they are the Only people who are actively happy with the result that they got lmao
#creation is definitely the most positive result! tried to give everything a downside but. frankenstein's monster is awesome actually.#some of the relics/bones people are excited ab their results but that's mostly people going 'i work in a museum!' haha#saw some people excited about getting blood which was awesome. you guys know i love blood.#should have a tag for that actually... poetry about blood... i feel i've written enough at this point...#anyway. so so happy you enjoyed it anon haha#not poetry#ask

10 favourite song from the spine ?
Ouuuhhh hard question... I don't think I've ever had just one #1 top favourite on The Spine at any point and in general my favourites tend to switch around a lot when it comes to this album. But anyway, I think some of my biggest early favs were Museum of Idiots, Prevenge and Wearing A Raincoat, but a bit more recently I got really into Au Contraire and Broke In Two. And yet MORE recently I've had some newfound apprectiation for Memo To Human Resources because I heard it live last year!!
#wow. that 'heard it live' moment was exactly 3 months ago actually. already. wild#i actually just checked to see on my last fm what my most streamed song from this album is#and it's a tie between damn good times and museum of idiots hmmm. and then it's 3 other songs with one less play than those#so yep the spine is one of those albums where i always loved the whole thing about equally which i think is pretty awesome#ask game

Some days I'm like "I wish I were internet famous and had a big platform on social media" and other days I'm like "wow! thank goodness I don't have to take point on explaining that the Costume Institute is criminally underfunded and needs the Met Gala to survive!"
#Cora Harrington is so awesome and I'm incredibly proud that she chose the FIT program#but I do not envy her position as The Fashion History Lady of Twitter at the moment#museums#I woke up this morning to notifications of her tweets and opened the app to look at them and the threads of responses#whew

every time u reblog those paintings of coloured squares and rectangles I get so happy
“yay yippee” <- me
omg i’m SO glad u like them i love rothkos sm they make me so happy i’m so glad you like them too!!!
#ask#ive never had the chance to see any irl but i really hope i can one day but there are none close to me :(#they’re so beautiful and i’ve heard that they have such a presence when you see them irl bc no scan or photo can really capture the size#of them and the colors in the scans aren’t 100% accurate from what i’ve heard but i will enjoy them how i can for now#anyway colorblock paintings are so cool but i find a lot of ppl don’t like them as much as my anytime i show someone irl they’re like uh ok#it’s nice ig but they don’t get it and like ik a lot of ppl are like that with modern art but it saddens me…. why can’t they see what#i see in them…. but it’s whatever i think they’re so rad tho like they’re also RLLY FUCKING BIG irl btw like i think most r bigger than me#i think the average size was smth like 5’4 by 4’3 if i’m remembering correctly#and like one i rlly rlly like (orange and yellow. 1956) is like 7’5 by 5’9 so it’s MASSIVE which is so cool like the simplicity of#the color fields with the complexity of the layered colors with teh sheer fucking size of the things omg…. and they display them rlly#well i esp like the rothko chapel’s way of doing it bc it’s a nice clean room with these giant paintings contrasting the walls and the#lighting looks so good like ough i really wanna go but it’s in texas and that’s like a wayyy too long drive lol. but it’s so fucking#gorgeous like no hate to other museums that display them but the bright lighting is not what they’re made for the softness of the chapel#is like so perfect for them and i’ve heard that other places r trying to display them in softer lighting as to recreate the lighting that#rothko would’ve been using while painting them so that’s so fucking cool#i got distracted and forget where i was going w that but i’m SO glad u like them i am trying to spread my love of rothkos to other ppl#i think we all need to appreciate them more bc they’re so awesome
