i'm kind of late to this but i just finished reading the scholomance trilogy by naomi novik and i feel like it is such an underrated urban fantasy?? taking the chosen one trope and turning it on its head with a fmc who has been prophesied to bring death and destruction, who is imbued with terrible power, but cannot even properly use said power to solve any of her obstacles because it would obliterate them and her soul. it takes a tired trope and the idea of an 'overpowered mary sue' and throws it back in your face by showing how all the power and destiny in the world is useless against a system filled with corruption that has burdened you with an easy way out (evil/destructive magic) that you can't take so now you have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to do simple, constructive spells instead of flicking your wrist and being done with it.

hiii!! me again!!! i know, you're probably losing it with all the asks i send diejhderfofrfnorfk
just wondering but do the slasher boys just like- pick and choose where to kill someone? or is it just "follow the dude home and kill em when nobody is looking then run away" all willy-nilly (which i doubt because cough sun cough whaatt who said that...)
omg not losing it at all 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️ silly goose. may not always have time to answer all asks (your’s or anybody else’s)… or KNOW how to answer (some of you guys are asking the hard questions… takes me a while sometimes 😝). But people sending well-meaning asks about the chars or otherwise is always welcome!
Hmm it’s hard to answer this question concisely because the reality is that their methods change depending on the situation and as they grow bolder and more experienced.
Once they’ve found a target (probably around once every few months) Moon does reconnaissance. Watching them at night, studying their schedules, looking for further evidence of their transgressions, testing locks and other methods of entry.
Earlier in their slasher careers, they would almost always go for a knock out and kidnap kinda approach. Then they would take the target (in the words of John Mulaney 😝 ) to a “secondary location” where Sun could be more assured nothing unplanned will occur, no unexpected visitors, while they carry out their devious deeds. Not to say things haven’t gone sideways and they’ve had to get creative in the moment.
The Slashers are lucky (for their purposes anyway) to live in an area with a lot of open farmland, rotted barns, woods, and decrepit industrial infrastructure nearby. Places that nobody cares about anymore or people haven’t stepped foot within in months or even years.
I haven’t done much description of the kinda of location they live in yet, but the arcade sits within a somewhat rundown small suburban town that lies at the outskirts of a larger city. Sun n Moon’s house is a bit further into the country, a few miles away.
Generally, they used to avoid doing much slashing in the target’s houses or places of work. Too much evidence to clean up, too many neighbors to overhear things. But they’ve gotten more ballsy the longer they’ve remained uncaught. They might play longer games of psychological warfare on targets, kidnap or even kill in riskier locations, dispose of evidence or the body in creative ways, even do something like release one into the woods if Moon’s feeling like a chase. All depends on the situation, like I said before.

heyy i was just curious, ive gotton into dc recently but i dont know which comics to read/where to read them, was wondering if you could offer some advice on that front :)
mostly interested in batman/fam, also superman/fam and the flash/fam
So when I first got into Batman, I started at my local library. I checked out a TON of comic anthologies from all different runs and I just kinda skimmed through to see which ones most appealed to me and read those. I loved Batgirl/Robin year one, Super-Sons, Young Justice ‘98, Lil Gotham, and the We Are Robin runs in particular. Then I ended up subscribing to DC Universe for a while to be able access tons of comics without ads (since the ads on the free online sites drove me absolutely nuts and I wanted to be able to download them to read offline) but I know tons of people make it work on sites like “readcomicsonline.li” with ad blockers and good antivirus software.
Later I discovered that what I enjoyed a lot more than the traditional comic format were the DC graphic novels, for example:

Back in 2020-2022ish, I read every single one I could get my hands on through my library and had a ton of fun. They’re great one-sitting books.
What I would recommend is just getting a ton of different comics for free—either online or from the library—and seeing what appeals to you most. I say this because I also tried it the other way — searching out rec lists and “starter packs” of what people online said were the most vital runs for various characters, and while I’m glad I was able to get that exposure to the story straight from the source material… it wasn’t the most enjoyable way to explore comics for me. It kind of felt like homework, making myself to-read lists of all these runs I wasn’t particularly interested in for whatever reason (didn’t like the art, didn’t like the storyline, didn’t have enough humor, etc etc), and that’s the fastest way to drain the fun right out of something.
The best decision I ever made in my comic reading journey was to just read the ones that appealed to me and leave the rest, and not spend a lot of time wondering whether or not that made me a fake fan. At the end of the day, hobbies are for having fun.

Ever see a boy so pretty that you have to rough him up through deadly combat? Because even though you know his broad appeal is Pretty Sad Boy, you also know that he is a powerful and stubborn force who, when push comes to shove, always finds his bravery and keeps fighting on?
Anyway. I love Ebenholz. And I put characters I love through hell.

I don’t think I’ve been so sickened and disgusted by a piece of media in a while as I have with Mouthwashing - and I don’t mean that as a criticism, it’s a testament to how powerful it is as art.

HAHAHAHA, I should clarify that I just mean for super hero-y ones. I mostly watch the first one and rarely watch the second (or anything after...... or remakes, lol), I think the only Marvel one I've seen in recent history is Thor: Ragnarok. Actually, the Spider-man franchise pretty much encapsulates how I interact with Marvel properties: I saw the first trilogy because it was new and exciting at the time, then they remade it too fast and I refused to pay for something I just saw, that was so recent in my memory from the release date I could still remember exact scenes from it (THERE WERE ONLY FIVE YEARS BETWEEN SPIDER-MAN 3 AND THE REBOOT - THAT IS NOT ENOUGH TIME FOR ME TO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THAT AGAIN. HOW IS THAT ENOUGH TIME FOR ANYONE TO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THAT AGAIN???), then I watched the first Tom Holland one (fourteen years I can vibe with) and nothing that followed because that's generally when the gimmicks and cameos start in lieu of good story-telling, or they make it dark and gritty because that's the only way to ground this superhuman, right (I assume a random white guy: "Should we fridge a lady? Yeah, we should probably fridge a lady"). The first one generally at least tries to have a soul because they have to introduce the character and make you care about them but many of the ones that follow (the few I've seen from when the MCU was just starting out and I had hope *coughs*Iron Man 2, Thor 2, etc.*coughs*) are just cash grabs that don't try because you already love this character and there they are, right there, so money please!
Meg 2 however..... EPIC, NO NOTES. It knows if I was a shark girl, I was probably a dinosaur girl and it gambled correctly. That's what you're watching this for? Have three sharks and an unnecessary (probably stupid expensive) dinosaur intro that is nearly completely irrelevant to the story but that you will also not want to live without and for an extra special bonus: oblivious husbands and their brilliant daughter. Like. You got me nailed, my dude. Will watch every subsequent sequel, no questions asked.
#i do understand that spider-man is a bullshit studio thing#and that it's a marvel property that belongs to sony and i implied everything is under the mcu umbrella#(and i honestly don't fault them for remaking it. instead i just don't understand how there was an audience for it???)#but they're all guilty of the same shit for different but also EXACTLY THE SAME reasons#they want to fleece money from me. because that's how it feels: like i'm being swindled#they're not earning my money through good content but instead through brand recognition and shared cultural touchstones#YOU CAN'T HAVE MY MONEY MOUSE#sony you can when it's miles (that is a sequel i DID watch and that DID have a soul imo) :))))#something similar (cash grabs) are pretty much the exact reason i stopped reading marvel comics too#capitalism ruins everything#for a moral everyone knows *snorts*#also generally the sequels have bigger budgets and just to quote freckle...... sometimes things that are expensive are worse#great things sometimes come from people having to work within constraints and when you aren't given any....... terrible things can happen#like bbc sherlock lolol. AHEM#basically if i watch a sequel now it has to be a character i am VERY invested in so i'm willing to be burned - deadpool or miles#or it has to break containment from people who will go see anything with a marvel sticker on it to people who..... won't#and still recommend it - like ragnarok#(i wonder if NOT going the dark gritty route and instead having a fun story with a conflict that wasn't dependent on outdoing every#other conflict that came before it in this whole universe had aNYTHING to do with its success. hrm. it's a mystery!)#normally i would answer this privately but i had to explain about the sony thing so you would know i KNEW about the sony thing and then....#tag explosion and now it has to be public and i'm sorry i went on a mouse rant. I HATE THE MONOPOLY MOUSE I JUST DO.#IT'S BAD AND IT MAKES BAD LAZY THINGS THAT KILL CREATIVITY (AND NOW ALSO FUNDS GENOCIDE SO)#!ask
