I spent a large portion of today researching tekhelet for work as part of a piece on ancient dyes and I got so stupid emotional. Like it's just a dye, but it was such an important thing in ancient Judaism as the dye which would make tzitzit blue and the method of making it was lost around the time of the Arab conquest of Israel in the 7th century. (Also I note that lots of sources date the loss of the secret of the original manufacture but many just gloss over it mapping directly onto the colonisation of Judea/Israel by the Rashidun Caliphate - I know that the two events may not be connected but I have spent too long looking at history to be able to say that these were completely unrelated y'know... Lost knowledge is very, very rarely a coincidence)

They literally, to this day, still don't know how it was made.

There are multiple theories, most of which revolve around the murex snail (where we get Tyrian purple from) and the fact that if you expose the pigment it produces - di-bromo indigo - to light at the right point in the production process, it is reduced to regular indigo from which you can get your blue dye. But this has all been worked out using modern methods. The ancient production method of tekhelet is gone and I honestly find myself mourning yet another piece of lost knowledge form our history.

I never really share anything personal on here because I'm a pretty private person, but there's something so profound about getting passed down my Grandpa's old camera collection.

Like what do you mean he took pictures of my Grandma with them 30+ years ago? That the A-1 Canon that's now in my room was the camera that took my parents' wedding photos? I stuck a roll of film into the same place he did? The thought of him loving photography as much as I do is the most tear-jerking emotion I've ever experienced even if we're not that close.

I just got the A-1 Canon working again after upwards of 20 years of being unused and sitting in a cupboard. Hearing the shutter go off as I took a picture of my dog was something special, and I don't even think I can describe it in a way that makes sense. It was like I was holding my own family history in my hands.

I was genuinely surprised it was in such good condition in the first place - I barely had to do anything other than look over it to make sure nothing was broken and mess with a few areas of concern. My grandpa kept his A-1 in immaculate condition despite his pretty bad health; the same with his other cameras as well.

As much as I want to keep them all in a glass case and have them stay perfect, I can't imagine not using them the same way he did. Of course, up until I have to retire them for my own kids to use one day in just as pristine a state.

I've written 155,000 words in my interactive fiction WIP in the last six months! That's a lot of words, and that isn't counting the five other story concepts asking to be written that link into the one I'm telling now.

I found this on a scroll through Twitter today and it made me laugh.

There's a part of me that wants MWPP to have built a treehouse in the forbidden forest, just to have a secret place to go to that's just theirs (because the shack is different, it just is.) It's all cobbled together out of spare wood they found and bits of the shack that moony ripped up and the ladder is crooked and there's a little overhang where they'd stand to have literal pissing matches ("Bet I can hit that tree" "Yeah? Bet I can hit your mum") and there's things all carved in the trunk that are mostly worn away with weather and time, but inside -- inside is where the magic is.

There's full on conversations all over the walls, written in black ink. Graffiti immortalizing these four asshole teens in all their immature glory. Outlines of their bodies on the floor, and Remus had drawn X's for eyes and a frowny face on his. Someone drew an impressive rack of antlers on James. Someone else drew an impressive rack on Peter. (Below the left one there's a line that says "fuck u Sirius" and below that another that says "get in line xx") and there's the remnants of a dart board, holes dotting the wall around it, and there's a scoreboard that isn't for the darts but rather for the number of times one of them punched James in the nuts (Sirius was winning)

(James was also inexplicably on the board, with many question marks around his name)

And it's just this glorified lean to stuck up in a tree but there's so much history there -- so much stupid humor -- that Harry has to catch his breath when he stumbles across it, starts reading. Starts laughing at the notes reading "here lies James Potter, ripped a fart during Charms and died of embarrassment" / "THAT WAS YOU HAHAHAHA"

And it's all covered in moss and dead leaves and the ghosts of dead men and Harry preserves it anyway because it was proof they were alive, they were real, they were human.

I just think they deserve a little gremlin tree fort okay

The kiddos are enjoying their last day of summer freedom while I'm over here being bombarded with thoughts of so many babes wanting their stories told.

There's:

Beta!Pre-serum Steve is begging (quite respectfully, mind you) for some love and cuddles after the angst I just put him through. The angsty piece will drop sometime this coming week.

Alpha!Jake, along with Alpha!Bucky and Alpha!Ari, are wanting me to put them in a fic because of what I wrote for Beta!Steve. This is truly my fault. They're going to go all Alpha Command, too, on some people that really deserve it for upsetting Beta!Steve and talking trash about Beta!Ransom.

Song Fic!Jake isn't as loud right now since his story starts out rather angsty though gets a fluffy ending.

The same can be said about Song Fic!Curtis. He's being gruffly sweet about what's to come for him, wanting to get to that good part for him, too.

To Repay a Debt!Ransom is probably being the sweetest, surprisingly, in wanting the next part of his story told.

Cool Rider!Bucky is also being very sweet and patient, but he's also making his presence known for me to get started on his story, too.

Cupid's Arrow!Frank Adler is finally being cooperative and wants to have the first part of his story told. We finally figured out how he's going to end up in Cupid's Arrow from his old life in Boston, which will be the official start of his story with Savvy and the other babes.

I also have another idea I've been flirting with (as if I need more) since I saw Twisters last weekend. It's a Rodeo!Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes with other CE babes story that could easily become a series if I'm not careful.

And...now because of @ellethespaceunicorn with their lovely Dennis Baker pieces, I've got that man on the brain. He's going to dig in and somehow make it so he has a story, too, eventually. I just know it.

I'm certain I'm forgetting others, but these are the loudest right now.

How am is this little writer supposed to choose when all these beautiful men have appealing arguments to give them what they want?

I think my writing goals are changing for the upcoming week.

Bounty Hunter Hux AU

Hux leaned in closer, much like Ren did to him in the past. Just a faceless man crowding the personal space of another, intimidating and looming. “Should I kill you?” He kept his voice soft and low, as he pressed the blaster hard enough against Ren’s temple to bruise. “Do you want to die? Are you looking to end the farce that your life has become, Kylo Ren?”

He pulled back to see Ren’s eyes go wide and the color drain from his face. His mouth opened in a silent ‘oh’.

“Or should I call you Ben Solo now?” He sneered, not masking the derision that laced his words. If Hux hadn’t been studying him, he would have missed Ren’s wince.

#20 Favorite Title for a story I've written

I really The Uses of Adversity (it's plot related and a Shakespeare reference to As You Like it, Logan's favorite play he's seen Roman perform.) I am stupidly proud of the series title for History | Matchr, as well. Matchr is a match-making algorithm that consumes your internet search history and the | symbol is also a 'pipe' in scripting languages which literally means "put the output of 'History' into the 'Matchr' process and give us the output." The story also has some very deep past Dukeceit history, so it has a double meaning.
