how did i not know there was an amnesia: memories musical..... an entire decade ago...................................................
#actually really difficult to find english language info about it. it seems they had like#a system where each performance had a different ending for the different boys LOL#so if you wanted to see kents ending youd have to come on a specific day etc#there was a dvd release which appears to have all the endings included which is neat. another reason to practice my japanese#id definitely like to check out the songs specifically. you know im already tracking down the cd. you KNOW#i do love amnesia. not the greatest game. theres complications with the artist too LOL#but it was a WILD ass game. especially for my first full otome game i had ever played#i still havent played anything else with this intense genre whiplash between routes#i didnt care much for shins romance but i loved his route because it was straight up just a mystery thriller#tomas was a horror and it was awesome obvs#kents was like a sweet and nice little romantic drama#ikki was like a normal showbiz drama complete with darker elements but also hes an accountant for some reason instead of a celebrity#which is really funny to me HKJDSHJKLDADSd and ukyos his own thing going on. his own intensely otome game-ass thing <3#it was awesome. i need to play more otome games again so many have been released in the past couple years#i need my tonal and genre whiplash. i neeeeeeeeeed it

I finally watched The Creator and holy shit why didn’t any of you tell me it was going to be that beautiful
#this movie was literally made for me#i’m a ml engineer#I research tech comms & censorship in asia and la#vietnamese language vietnamese people!!!! Thaii!! nepalese!! desi!!!#*cries* god i love being asian#Asians banding together to kill colonizing Americans ilysm#gareth edwards forever the movie maker of all time#we are going to gif the shit out of this#once I find out how to#the creator#this is the dream science fiction was made for#science fiction is not for taking from other cultures and putting white westerners in its place even when that's how it's been.#it's for telling a grave and distant future that is not so distant to deliberately expand your view of how the world works#INCLUDING outside the west and the united states#reclaiming the genre to the very culture that inspired it#And by not only showing the overpillaged overcolonized overpoached focus on southeast asia but also all of asia as a united front.#Imperialism is supported by xenophobia and racism so how else do you tell that story without casting nonwhite races & diverse nationalities#the movie said you just fucking can't!#and its apparently not even that hard with the film coming in at $80M to make (blue beetle cost $104M for comparison that's insane)#and to say 'American' so clearly and so many times oh is so *chefs kiss*#there's flaws but idgaf because they are insignificant compared to the story and themes that are so clearly and respectfully carried out#It's completely okay if you didn't know anything about southeast asia or asia in general#but when watching the movie don't you just understand that imperialism war violence are inherent evils#NOT because (a) other cultures are nice to look at and you can borrow it like through clothes dances food songs religion#(b) that we are pretty advanced and such intelligence shouldn't go to waste and perhaps be put to work#or (c) any other rationalized benefit for imperialists to put a price on a people or life#but by the simple fact that people are human and are hurting#and that the elusive concept of a soul and where we go when we die exist for everyone along with fears emotions and meaning surrounding it#it's about how we must protect these differences in meaning /because/ we are all the same

already had to block one person .-.
#word policing of bad words in ANOTHER language / culture that are not even close to the context that we are using them in here is not it#helps literally nobody?#the opposite even? why not flood the evil word tag with something unrelated??#also doesn't make anyone an evil person for using a coincidentally same / similar word in a different context outside of the bad context#there are so many words in this world that mean bad things in other languages and cultures#that's almost on the same level as trying to forbid the korean word 'nega' / 'niga'#what if I told you that Abo is also a german word? (short for Abonnement = subscription)#it's literally on many peoples tram tickets here. german youtuber say it in every other video#are we not allowed to say that in germany too? just because it is a slur on the other side of the word in a different language / context?#sorry for the rant but... it is just... anger and energy put at the wrong place. barking at the wrong tree.#especially since the fictional genre is a/b/o even with slashes

Song of the Day: March 28
"Je Suis Malade" by Lara Fabian
#song of the day#just here for a second (laptop's gonna die too actually) before I go into this meeting and then hopefully straight to sleep#(sleep after not in the meeting)#the Thursday meeting to plead for the lift of my project has been moved to Tuesday. I worry I'm a fish exhausting myself on the line#I should have slept but I didn't! or I kind of did but it didn't work#I did make a giant pot of really tasty soup#the last cabbage from storage and some new spring garlic greens and carrots and potatoes and polish sausage and a ton of mushroom stock#I had no idea what I was going to make when I started it--just started chopping things--and I'm so glad it worked out#this song played while I cooked and I love it--big voice for days and days#I worked with guy from France for a semester and we talked about music a lot#he thought it was very funny that I listened to so many genres and still it was all in English#it's interesting and humbling thing how privileged we are to have access to so much of the internet in our first language#so much media available all the time#anyway I do know not only all the words to a handful of Lara Fabian songs but also I brushed up on my French so I could understand her#gorgeous gorgeous voice. incredible music#I forget where I was really going with this. I gotta get some sleep

thinking about recipes that taste different in every home, differing with each hand that makes it. how there can be so many different foods all sharing the same name, even within a single culture.
except not in a wow-cultural-variations-are-beautiful-way, but more along the lines of how they can inspire pure, distilled disappointment (or rage) in ways few other things in life can.
the dish stays the same, the ingredients stay the same, the cooking method stays the same - so you hear of [dish] and are briefly filled with hope and longing. bonus points if you're living away from home and you haven't had a chance to eat said dish for months or years. and!! here it is!! you've diligently avoided eating said dish at random restaurants over here because you just know (usually from prior experience) that they'll absolutely ruin it, so you're better off abstaining. or maybe it's the kind of dish that ISN'T available at restaurants, and your only hope is plotting and making friends with the right people that have family visiting in the vague hope that they're the kind to delight in plonking food into hands of "these students living all alone and so far from home :(" (nvm the fact that you saw said friend having the TIME of her life all this time because she's finally in a city with better food outlets than her hometown) (yes, I am aware that this is getting suspiciously specific at this point, shush)
so anyway, the food. it paid off! you put in the legwork and suffered through the appropriate number of awkward conversations with friends' parents who REALLY don't know you as well as they like to pretend they do, gave the right number of fake totally-not-awkward smiles, and now!! they're INSISTENT you join them for lunch because they brought [dish] from back home! and fuck, it's been literal MONTHS since you've had this last, AND they're from broadly the same culture as you so really, surely you can trust them to mean it when they call what they've brought [dish]. your eyes gleam and you agree, because oh man it's been so long and you just know it's going to be so good and the anTICIPATION is-
and then you take one bite and question your life's choices and experience a moment of unadulterated bafflement and abject loss because this was the first time you've had [dish] outside of your home and you didn't realise people used the same name for ATROCITIES like the kind you're attempting to eat now. it looks wrong, smells wrong, and tastes dreadfully wrong. this isn't [dish]. this isn't just a disappointment after all the build-up and hope you had. this is an insult. this is an embodiment of the sheer disrespect they have for the dish.
you realise then that ah, turns out disappointment actually DOES have a very distinct taste, and you just got acquainted with it. you wonder how they managed to ruin it so spectacularly. how!!! why???? literally WHAT lengths did they have to go to in order to manage to make [dish] taste so alien???
anyway, that feeling. few emotions I've experienced in life were as potent as that welling up of abject horror and sorrow as I tasted the first long awaited morsel of a beloved dish made in a different style (an objectively WRONG style /lh)
#this is about gongura pachadi (a type of pickle)#i will. readily sell an appendix for some good gongura pachadi#the images ddg provides when I look it up on the interwebs look terribly questionable so ignore them#and take my word for it when I say it looks much better and tastes excellent#well I love the taste anyway#anyway i have and will eat it literally every single day - multiple times a day actually - if i can#i didn't have it for two whole days recently and i missed it so much (it was just sitting in the fridge but that's not the point)#so i had it again today and life suddenly made sense again :]#but it reminded me of the time my roommate's parents brought their version of gongura and it was. good lord. so wrong on so many levels#i'm sure they feel the same about the version we make but shushhhh#oh also the name is fascinating#telugu has this interesting thing going on with corruption of words#and gongura is another example because while i /write/ gongUra i tend to pronounce it as something closer to gongOra#but telugu is a phonetic language! so idk why this happens but it's with a lot of words. see also: writing being 'vrayatam' but pronounced#'rayatam' by dropping the 'v' sound; or katuka (that's kohl) being pronounced katika by some (me)#where was i going with this - oh yeah it's interesting because we already have accommodations for word corruptions in our grammar#but this is a different kind or something? problem is that my telugu is pretty sucky so im not entirely sure if it's#a family thing/community thing/region thing/or just me personally mishearing and making mistakes#but no vrayatam vs rayatam is v common - in fact we have a term for it: it's basically bookish vs spoken language#but again gongura/gongora ISN'T an example of that dichotomy from what i understand so i think it's like a different genre of corruption?#apologies if this isn't making much sense; i'm quite sleepy#anyway what was my point#oh yeah gongura my beloved <3#placeholder tag

from 1st of january 2022, i’ve been on the quest to watch as many films as I can in under a year. i took up the 1 movie per day approach and some days it’s hard to commit to the effort but making it to 301 is considered a BIG WIN in my book.

help i have such Opinions on translation now
#ok gonna preface this with saying that someone is translating for free and i KNOW that takes so much time and effort and love. and also ther#there are a lot of cultural and contextual footnotes that i really love and wouldn't have been able to figure out myself!#also it seems like the translator's native language is neither chinese NOR english so like. honestly that's really amazing.#so i still really respect what they're doing and am not gonna say anything identifying about this work (it's completely unrelated to tot)#but i've been reading a webnovel fan translation alongside its original chinese version and i guess i'm farther in the 'localization' camp#than i thought. bc this translation leans way too hard into the 'direct translation' of words and phrases and slang#and then with an added footnote explaining what it means. sometimes it's honestly kinda useful from the perspective of wanting to learn the#the language but i don't think it's the right translation choice because there can be several of these per chapter#and the vast majority are not at crucial significant moments when the loss in meaning outweighs the cost of breaking the story flow#and in one instance i saw (the final straw for me) it doesn't even make sense to translate the meaning of the chinese word directly#bc it's not the meaning that matters. the phrase originally came about as a loanword from japanese and a character with a similar pronunciat#pronunciation was used to represent the japanese syllable.#sure this is just one example of an internet slang word that many people might not even know the etymology of and maybe they DO think of the#the meaning of the word now! but still.#i have so many Thoughts now. on how translation is a constant game of balance and sacrifice where the set of 'rules' and expectations change#depending on genre and audience and intention and just individual person!#and -- most relevant to me i guess -- whether it is expected and/or preferrable for fan translations to veer on the side of direct

This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.
e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.
I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.
This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.
And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you 🫵 are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.

I would like to read it.
All I'm saying is Ridley Scott went out and hired the giant mutant genitals artist to design the Alien, and H.R. Giger delivered a monster with a giant penis head, a vulva-outline space ship, a birthing egg with an opening made of two crossed vaginas, a facefucking vagina monster fertilizer and a lil baby dick form that kills the host - the man 100% delivered on his artistic principles.
And because of this, it is just a little bit funny how the penis and vagina designs are enshrined in pop culture, forever being passed between creators who seem to less and less think for a minute that they're working with genital monsters and it turns most of the movie franchise and comics into an exercise in unintentional absurdity where a character can be fleeing from a rolling vulva like the boulder from Indiana Jones without a single shred of awareness or subtext.
#also i am going to be snarky in the tags about a different comment#someone else complaining I'm talking shit about Prometheus without seeing it or dont know Ridley Scott directed#I have seen it twice and I know fully well its the same director#trying to pretend there's some cohesive metaphor in Prometheus is absurd on so many levels#from the movie itself being internally inconsistent to not a single biomechanical element cohesive with Gigers artistic vision#Alien is a cohesive story where Gigers aesthetic is a contributor but includes other influences such as writer OBannons Chrons disease#the elements are woven into the text of a complete and thoughtful story with well rounded complex characters#Prometheus is an incoherent mess trying to yoke characters and story to some vague metaphor of birth and christianity#it puts its woefully banal Big Questions out front as if that alone lends gravitas to the rest#lost writer Lindelhof once again coyly pretending the vagueness is hiding depth which isnt there#Ridley Scott somehow completely forgetting that other people contributed to the original#acting as if the film is so singularly his vision that rewriting a different film idea into an Alien prequel is not a bald faced cash grab#Prometheus is a movie made by self important children playing with human emotions and body horror like cheap dolls#smashing them together and yelling that they're kissing#my off the cuff remark is only scratching the surface of the amount of shit i can talk about Prometheus#and i am the girl who loves horror metaphors and horror as a genre that says things about society#I'm the target audience for scifi horror to speak in the language of metaphor#Prometheus fuckin ain't it#what little metaphorical value it has got is so trite#the protag having this heavily cgi defanged abortion metaphor then getting chased by the vagina boulder is not particularly interesting#Alien has layers of meaning woven together about disease and birth and capitalism and feminism#it works as a movie because it is so grounded in multiple real human experiences#Prometheus has none of this and comes first from a place of profit margins second from abstraction detached from real experience#humanity and the relationship of the movie to recognizable aspects of life are a distant third or fourth

Completely random question but do you like westerns? I recently watched Tombstone and surprised at how much I enjoyed it and by how few pieces of western genre content (TV, films, etc.) I see being made.
I do like Westerns! They're not my favourite genre, but I've watched a lot of them over the years because they're pretty fundamental to understanding cinema broadly. A lot of the very first feature films were a mix of adaptations of classic works (Les Miserables [1909], Dante's Inferno [1911], Oliver Twist [1912], etc.) or Westerns, with the first ever narrative feature actually being Australia's The Story of the Kelly Gang in 1906 followed by Hollywood's In Old California in 1910.
As a result, Westerns established a lot of cinema's tropes and visual language, so if you're at all interested in exploring cinema history, devoting some time to Westerns is, I think (as all my film theory lecturers beat into me, haha), vital.
I haven't seen Tombstone though, but funnily enough someone I know irl was talking about it recently, so I should check it out! My favourites are proooobably The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Heaven's Gate, High Noon, McCabe and Mrs Miller and The Big Country in terms of older ones, but more modern ones I'd say The Rider, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Unforgiven, and to circle back to a modern Australian adaptation of that 1906 film, haha, The True History of the Kelly Gang are all ones really worth the watch.
#it's an interesting genre in so many ways#but yeah understanding its role in establishing cinema language is both fascinating and to read about#if you're interested#and also really useful if you like critical analysis with film#film asks
