The Sides of a Haunting
Inspired by that one post on here that’s like “what if Nico thinks Thomas is haunted but it’s actually just the sides”
I ended up changing it a little bit from the post because I liked my version better
Warnings: Ghost mention, haunting mention, Virgil swears a little, Janus and Remus aren’t unsympathetic but they’re not really sympathetic either, they’re just hanging out
Word count: 2832 (this is what happens when I don’t set arbitrary deadlines for myself)
Summary:  Nico’s pretty sure Thomas is haunted. Weird things keep happening around him - things that can’t be explained in this realm of existence. But does Nico really want to deal with another existential crisis?
Something was going on with Thomas.
The first time Nico had come over to Thomas’s house, he’d noticed a few weird things; Thomas kept whispering to himself (what Nico could hear sounded like one side of a conversation) and he would look at something, blink, and then it’d move. Originally, he’d just put it down to nervousness; both of them were tense at the situation, so his mind must have been playing tricks on him.
But then as they had gotten to know each other better and spending more time together, he’d noticed more… weird things.
He’d see some items float in front of him for a minute, before Thomas would hiss something, and then the floating thing would either drop suddenly or vanish altogether. Nico would knock on Thomas’s bathroom door because he’d been in there for a long time, and he would hear Thomas shushing somebody.
Then there would be the times when Thomas’s hair or clothes would move, when they were inside without any significant air flow. His hair would ruffle itself, sometimes, or his shirt would straighten. Sometimes his collar would turn the right way out, or his pants would even out.
Even weirder, he’d occasionally see something out of the corner of his eye. A flash of purple, usually, although sometimes it was red. Once he’d seen light blue, and then yellow right after that.
And then there were the reflections.
He’d be walking with Thomas outside, and he’d notice their reflection in one of the windows of the shops. Except it wasn’t just him and Thomas – there were other people, too, who looked almost identical to Thomas except for very small differences. But then he’d look again, and they’d disappear. It happened in mirrors, windows, he even could have sworn he saw something in his phone camera once.
And then!
There were six people that Thomas kept mentioning – Virgil, Roman, Patton, Logan, Janus, and Remus. He barely mentioned Janus, and Remus even less than that, but he’d say something about how “Patton said” this, and “Logan would say” that, and “Virgil would love” something that Nico had said, and “Roman thinks” Disney is the ultimate franchise.
The thing was… he mentioned them almost more than he mentioned some of his other friends, and Nico had never met them. Thomas hadn’t mentioned anything about them living far away; there had been no FaceTimes that Nico was aware of; and yet, Thomas would bring up something that one of them had said “yesterday” or “last week” or even “earlier today”.
So, yeah, something was going on.
If he didn’t know better, he’d say that Thomas was… haunted, maybe. Except that Thomas seemed to be very familiar with these… ghosts, for lack of a better term; from what Nico could figure, when Thomas was in the bathroom, he was talking to them. He didn’t sound scared (at least not most of the time).
So yeah, Nico was confused. And he wasn’t sure if he… wanted to bring this up with Thomas. It would be nice, sure, to know what was going on with him, but he didn’t want to deal with an existential crisis if the explanation was something… otherworldly.
Sue him, he’d had an existential crisis when he figured out he was gay. One was enough to tide him over until he was at least fifty.
Nico rocked back and forth on his feet as he waited for Thomas to open the door. They were going to hang out for a bit today – Nico had suggested going on a picnic, but Thomas said he wasn’t sure if he was up for a more formal outing, so they might just be staying in and watching movies together.
Suddenly, he heard voices from inside. He perked up, absentmindedly checking that his hair and clothes were in order.
“We’re going to scare him away,” Nico heard, muffled through the door. The voice was deep and forceful.
“No we won’t, kiddo!” another voice said. This one was lighter, more bubbly.
“We can’t continue leading him on,” a loud voice added. Well, louder than the rest of them.
“Falsehood.”
Nico was surprised by how close this voice was. He stepped back from where his ear was pressed up to the door, whirling his arms to try to avoid falling down the steps.
It didn’t work.
The voices inside the house went silent as Nico crashed down the steps, rattling the railing on the steps and groaning as he hit the bottom. There was a second when everything went quiet, and then someone opened the door.
Even though he looked identical to Thomas, something about him just felt… different. He was wearing glasses, for one thing, which Nico had never seen before. He was wearing a black polo shirt, and a blue necktie (which… well, Nico was pretty sure Thomas would only put on a necktie if there was a reason, and a date with him was not something that would fall under that category).
“Are you injured?” the stranger asked. Nico blinked as his brain short-circuited as another person appeared behind the stranger. This one was also identical to Thomas and also wearing glasses, but had on a light blue polo and a gray cardigan tied around his shoulders.
“Oh, kiddo, are you okay? Is anything broken?”
Nico shook his head slowly, propping himself up on his forearms. “…Nothing’s broken, no.”
The man in the tie nodded. “Optimal. Thomas?”
Then Thomas pushed past the two men in the doorway, his face panicked. He ran down the front steps, crouching in front of Nico.
“Oh my god, are you okay?” he asked, his hands fluttering over Nico.
“I’m fine,” Nico said. He could feel a soft smile spreading across his face – they’d been dating for three whole months, and he still couldn’t help turning into a smitten preteen around Thomas.
“Here,” Thomas said, offering a hand to help Nico up. Nico took it, lacing his fingers with Thomas’s when they stood up.
He was interrupted by a squealing noise coming from the doorway. Another man was standing there, this time without glasses. He was wearing a white jacket with gold braiding, with a red sash laying diagonally across his chest. He was the source of the noise, and was bouncing up and down and flapping his hands.
Thomas’s eyes widened, and he gave panicked glances to Nico and the men in the doorway. “Um,” he said. His breathing increased.
“Fuck,” came from the doorway. Nico looked up to see a man in an oversized hoodie and black eyeshadow under his eyes breathing quickly, his hands shaking.
Sweater turned around to face Eyeshadow. “Oh, c’mon kiddo, it’ll be okay,” he said. “Let’s all go inside, and get this figured out, okay?” He hustled Tie, Sash, and Eyeshadow inside. “We’ll be inside when you’re ready, okay Thomas?” he called behind him.
“…Okay,” Thomas said, his voice quiet. He was staring at the sidewalk, his free hand fidgeting with the material of his pants.
“You wanna introduce me to those people?” Nico asked, squeezing Thomas’s hand. He tried to make the question not too accusatory or nosey – just… an opening, if Thomas wanted.
Thomas blew out a breath, nodding to himself once. “Sure,” he said. He seemed to be steeling himself, or planning something.
He walked Nico up the steps, opening the door for him. Nico stepped in, putting his bag down next to the door. As he turned around, he was surprised to see the four people standing in Thomas’s living room.
Tie was standing just a few feet away from where Nico was right now, his hands clasped behind him. Sweater was standing in front of the back window, his hands on his hips. Sash was in front of the TV, his arms crossed and a pouty look on his face. Nico could barely see another person – Eyeshadow, maybe? – sitting on the stairs, sprawled out.
Thomas gently tugged Nico to the couch, where they sat down. The other four men looked at Thomas attentively.
“How would you like to approach this, Thomas?” Tie asked expectantly. Sash rolled his eyes, but didn’t say anything.
“Just- let me handle it, for now,” Thomas said, taking a shaky breath. He closed his eyes, then shifted to face Nico, holding both of his hands.
“So… Nico…” he started, his voice hesitant. Nico nodded encouragingly. “So, this is kinda weird. But… this is Patton,” Sweater waved, “Roman,” Sash bowed to Nico, “Virgil,” Eyeshadow gave a two-fingered salute, “and Logan,” Tie gave a polite nod. “They’re… aspects of my personality. That I can manifest. Into people. That can affect the real world.”
Nico blinked, thinking about it. He looked up at the other four people. Sweater – Patton – had a… hopeful look on his face. Roman looked like he was preparing for ultimate failure, and Virgil had a look in his eyes like he was ready to run. Logan was simply staring at Nico, his face impassive.
“Okay,” he said slowly. “Aspects of your personality – who’s what, then?”
All of the others immediately brightened – although Nico noticed that Logan seemed to tamp down his excitement quickly, returning to a neutral expression.
“I’m Thomas’s Morality!” Patton exclaimed happily. “I help him figure out what’s right and wrong, I tell dad jokes, and I try to keep the spirits up!”
“I’m his Creativity,” Roman said, then paused. A strange expression crossed his face, before he shook his head quickly and continued. “I help Thomas think of video ideas and help him with his parts in acting productions. I’m also a… manifestation of the ego, and am a part of his romantic feelings-”
“I’m his Anxiety,” Virgil interrupted. “’Nuff said.”
Logan adjusted his tie. “I am a manifestation of his Logic,” he said. “I am in possession of a majority of his knowledge, as well as the one in charge of monitoring his diet, water intake, and sleep schedule.”
Nico nodded at the introductions, mentally taking notes on all of them. Then he remembered.
“Oh – I remember, you talked about… Janus? And Remus? Are they… the same thing? Or, um. Types of people? I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s offensive.”
Thomas gave a little smile, then sighed. “Uh… yeah. I don’t… really… talk to them as much as these four, but yeah.”
“Would you like to meet them?” Logan asked.
“Why?!” Roman exclaimed. “It doesn’t- If Thomas doesn’t talk to them much, then why should Nico meet them…?” He trailed off as Logan raised his eyebrows at him.
“They are parts of Thomas, and Nico wants to know Thomas better. Is that correct?” Logan turned to Nico for confirmation.
“Yeah, I’d say that,” Nico said slowly.
“Perfect. Therefore, it makes the most sense that Nico meets Janus and Remus now, rather than putting it off.”
Thomas bit his lip. “Okay, I think- I think I’m going to say that Janus is my Deceit, he’s in charge of… basically, when I lie and what I do to lie? And Remus is… the other side of Creativity. He has… the thoughts I don’t like to think about. And the creative things that I just… generally don’t like.”
Nico nodded, squeezing Thomas’s hand sympathetically. “Okay,” he said. “I mean- you don’t have to introduce me, if you don’t want, but I’d love to if you’re open to it.”
Thomas took a deep breath, and nodded. He gestured with his hand twice, once towards Roman and once towards Logan. A person suddenly appeared next to each of them. Roman’s neighbor was dressed in a sparkly black shirt with a green sash – almost the exact opposite of Roman’s outfit. Logan’s was dressed in a dramatic overcoat and a half-cape, with yellow gloves and a hat.
“This is Remus,” Thomas introduced, wincing as he gestured at Roman’s partner, “and this is Janus.” He gestured at the dramatic-looking man next to Logan.
“Hello,” Janus said smoothly. “It is… wonderful to meet Thomas’s new… infatuation.”
Nico frowned a little bit, but Roman jumped in before he could think about that sentence too hard. “He is not an infatuation! He is Thomas’s wonderful, incredible, talented boyfriend, and we-”
Roman cut himself off, looking at Thomas. They were both blushing immensely.
“We care for him very much,” he concluded, looking down and away from everyone else. It seemed like there was more that he wanted to say, but he didn’t continue.
“I certainly care for him one way…” Remus put in, wiggling his eyebrows and shimmying his shoulders. Nico saw Virgil wince, and Roman gave Remus an offended look.
“As much fun as this was, Thomas, Remus and I have… things to go back to,” Janus said suddenly. He sunk into the floor to disappear, allowing Logan to step back into his place.
“I’ll see you later tonight, Thomas!” Remus giggled, wiggling his fingers at Thomas before sinking down as well.
Thomas winced. “Well, that was… an experience,” he said. He looked up nervously to meet Nico’s eyes. “Are you… okay…? With this?”
Nico nodded. “Of course,” he said. “I can’t say I… completely understand it, yet. But I’m not going to… break up with you, or something, over this.”
Virgil let out a deep breath from his spot on the stairs, surprising Nico a little bit. “Okay, now that that’s been determined, I’m going to go back to my room. Bye.” He sunk through the stairs and disappeared, leaving Nico blinking at the place he had been sitting.
“Sorry about that, kiddo,” Patton said, drawing Nico’s attention. “He’s a little… high-strung, sometimes – not that that’s a bad thing! – so he needs some… relaxing time, sometimes.”
Nico gave Patton a tiny smile. “I understand,” he said.
“I am going to check up on Virgil,” Logan announced. “Thomas, I hope this has helped your inner dilemma. Roman, I will talk to you in,” he checked his watch, “three hours and twenty-seven minutes.”
He sunk out as well, leaving Nico and Thomas with only Roman and Patton.
“I… very much enjoyed the chance to meet you,” Roman said, his hand rubbing the back of his neck. “I am going to prepare for my meeting with Logan now.”
“Bye,” Nico said, giving Roman a tiny wave.
“Sounds good,” Thomas said, giving Roman a smile.
Roman went away as the others had, his hands positioned dramatically.
“It was really nice to meet you in person, kiddo,” Patton said, looking towards Nico. “I liked seeing you hang out with Thomas when I was invisible, but it’s not quite the same, is it? Anyway, I’m going to leave you two alone, and let you talk for a little bit. See you later!”
Nico blinked rapidly as Patton sunk down, processing what he said.
“Wait,” he said, meeting Thomas’s eyes. “Were they- following us? On our dates?”
Thomas rubbed the back of his neck (just like Roman had, Nico noticed). “Um… yeah, I don’t… I don’t know what to say. They like to come out and see things in their body instead of just… in my head, I guess?” He laughed uncomfortably. “They’d… follow behind, sometimes. Give me… advice, on what to do.”
Nico leaned forward, intrigued. “Did you… follow it?”
Thomas tilted his head back and forth. “That… depends on the situation and who was out. Roman? Usually not. Logan? Usually yes, unless it was… very directly asking you to copulate with me, in which case I didn’t.”
Nico let out an embarrassingly high-pitched giggle. “Copulate?”
“Uhhh… yeah. He’s not the best with social interaction, but I love him anyway.”
Nico smiled, squeezing Thomas’s hands. They sat in silence for a few moments, before Nico had a realization.
“You’re not haunted!”
Thomas looked at him like he had grown two extra heads, a spare foot, and half an arm. “What?”
“Well, I kept seeing things in mirrors and reflections. And then there were floating things that just… disappeared, or things that moved by themselves. Or sometimes I’d hear you shushing people or talking to someone in the bathroom, or your hair and clothes would move when there wasn’t a breeze.”
Thomas’s eyes widened, before he threw his head back to laugh. “Oh, that’s hilarious,” he said. “I never thought about that, gosh!”
Nico found himself unable to stop the grin spreading across his face at Thomas’s laugh.
“Really, though,” Thomas said once he had calmed down a little. “Thank you for… being so okay with the whole thing.”
“Of course,” Nico said, leaning forward just a little to get his point across. “I don’t care.”
“It’s just- I’ve thought through a lot of different scenarios, and none of them turn out very well, and it was… honestly really nice to have someone respond positively to the sides.”
“Sides?”
“Oh, it’s – it’s what we call them. They’re sides of my personality. Sanders Sides?”
Nico gave a little giggle. “That’s clever,” he said.
Thomas perked up, with a tiny, hopeful smile on his face. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Nico squeezed his hand. “I like that.”

Black Sails fic recs
Working titles: 12 fics for christmas? 12 days of ficmas? 12 fics none of which actually have anything to do with christmas?
OKAY, so I love nothing more than a fic rec post, and I’ve seen a few Black Sails rec posts floating around but they mostly seem to be a couple of years old and they all recommend a similar bunch of fics (and deservedly so! they are all amazing!). But I thought I would make one to highlight some newer or less shouted-about fics, because I may have only been here for a couple of months but jfc there is so much talent in this fandom and more of it deserves to be hyped.
So, here are 12 of my favourite fics for the 12 days of christmas! (i.e. an excuse to put an arbitrary number cap on the list or we’d be here all day)
The majority of these are Silver/Flint and the ones that aren’t still all feature Silver prominently because that boy owns my soul, sorry for who I am as a person.
we should rip it straight out by minormendings
45K (Silver/Madi, Silver/Flint, Flint/Thomas)
Madi has always wondered if Silver understands what is between him and Flint as well as she. To her, it has always been obvious, from the way the two of them had fit together, had worried about each other, had acted as one. She had tried to bring it up with Silver back when they were together. But Silver had shaken her off, too enmired in the idea that he or Flint would prove each other’s downfall. Or perhaps just unwilling to open his eyes to the fact that he had loved Flint.
It was, unfortunately for the both of them, even more obvious after the thing between them had broken. Just as Silver had thrown away the war out of love for her, Flint had let Silver take away the war rather than kill him.
God. What a group the three of them were, showing love by betrayal.
Post-canon. Madi and Flint find their way back to Silver.
This fic diverges from canon right at the end of the 4x10; Silver has Flint held in a cell in Port Royal and Thomas delivered to him rather than taking him straight to the plantation. It is a BEAUTIFUL character study of how Flint and Madi could both come to forgive Silver, and has a great FlintMadi dynamic too. It also centres Madi’s struggle between wanting to provide for her people and wanting to experience the freedom of piracy, and fleshes out Julius’ character in a way the show never did.
we can lose and call it living by I_wouldnt_be_one_of_them
31K (Silver/Flint/Thomas, Silver/Flint, Flint/Thomas)
It's been twelve years since everything fell apart, and John Silver is settled in New England. He has a nice house and a job he likes, and he's gotten used to the loneliness. It's a good life, he thinks, but of course that's cast into doubt when James Flint and Thomas Hamilton show up to find closure and, apparently, to see whether he's happy.
This is an inverse of the ‘silver arrives on flint and thomas’ doorstep’ trope and has Flint and Thomas instead being the ones to interrupt Silver, who is living a sad and lonely existence post-series. I love the ThomasSilver dynamic here. And this Silver feels so true to canon he makes me want to WEEP.
Tell me we're dead and I'll love you even more by Craftnarok
21K (Silver/Flint)
In the year 1725, or thereabouts, John Silver finds himself driven by a storm into an inconsequential little port town, barely a speck on any civilised map. Returned to the life of a drifter, tired and rough around the edges, he is resigned to waiting for the weather to pass before he can sail on again to the next town, and the next, and the next. That is until he overhears a conversation in the inn about a local fisherman, one Captain Barlow, and his tall tales of tempests and becalmings, devils and sharks, and Silver finds a new future opening up to him, haunted by the spectres of his past.
All of Craftnarok’s fics are amazing but I am particularly drawn to this one; it’s set 10 years post-series and is a delightfully angsty exploration of how Flint and Silver could find their way back to each other in a scenario in which Thomas wasn’t at the plantation. It doesn’t let Silver off easy and I love that.
armed with the past and the will by whimsicalimages
3K (Silver/Madi, Madi & Julius)
The language of winning and losing, this language that men favor – Madi can speak this language, though she disagrees with its precepts. Success takes different forms, and failing once does not mean failing forever. It does not even mean failing the next time.
Post-series, Julius teaches Madi how to fight. This fic is BEAUTIFUL - give me anything that centres Madi post-canon - and it explores Madi’s relationship with both Julius and Silver so well in so few words.
Always In Season by mycapeisplaid
60K (Silver/Flint, past Flint/Thomas, past Silver/Madi)
Towering sand dunes, crystal-clear water, miles of forest, vineyards, orchards, and very spotty cellular service -- John Silver finds himself in a part of the state he's never been before and decides to take on seasonal work. Meanwhile, back from his yearly wintering in Florida, James Flint thinks that perhaps he'll take on a new business venture, even though it means he might have to interact with people other than his two close friends. Their summer employment fosters a friendship that could become something more. Like construction season in Michigan, the two must navigate through their own obstacles in order to seek an alternative route toward happiness.
This is an AU and so much fun!! Silver finds himself in Michigan and takes on some seasonal work at Guthrie Dunes. The whole cast features and the setting just WORKS SO WELL. And this Flint feels brilliantly in character despite the difference in setting.
to make a life by gone_girl
53K (Max/Anne, Max & Silver)
“What am I going to do with your name?” Max asks, a little incredulous.
“Whatever you want,” the salesman says. “Didn’t you want something real?”
Max heard a story once about the importance of answering questions like that carefully. If something emerges from the forest and asks for your name, don’t give it up, the story went. Offer only what you know you can live without. She’s never heard a story that tells her what to do when something emerges from the forest and offers its name to you.
I literally only finished this this morning but holy shit this fic is amazing, it’s a Max-centric AU set in Missouri the early 00s and it’s all about found family and building community and platonic love and it has a brilliant SilverMadi dynamic. And there just aren’t enough fics out there that focus on Max & Silver!!
the straight walk home by vowelinthug
73K (Silver/Flint)
Let me tell you a story, about a vaquero named Vasquez…
Obviously vowelinthug’s fics are recc’d all the time and rightly so as they are AMAZING, but one that I don’t see featured as often as the more prominent ones is this incredible Western!AU. It’s 73K guys!! It adapts the canon narrative into the Western setting SO well!! It has background Vane/Billy which I was not at all sure about going in but just WORKS!! Go read it.
The Truth about Eros by Aisalynn
21K (Silver/Flint, Silver/Madi, Flint/Thomas)
Silver understood one thing very well.
Being Fated did not mean you were safe.
It did not mean you were loved.
This one is hot off the press! I am not normally a fan of soulmate AUs but this is such an interesting take on the trope, and the world building fits around the polyamory theme of the show really effectively! And it is SO well written.
With Nothing on My Tongue by RosieTwiggs
13K (Silver/Flint, Silver/Madi)
"Silver thinks: Maybe God likes it when I fight with him.
He wonders now, whether he’s been playing into God’s plan all along. Because no matter how angry he gets, how defensive, how many “fuck you”s he flings to the heaven, isn’t it all just proof that he still believes God is there, despite it all?
Silver doesn’t know how to counter that.
Maybe he doesn’t want to anymore."
An incredibly well written (and angsty! read the tags!) Jewish!Silver character study. This one has really stayed with me.
Maybe in Another Life by samedifference61
31K (Silver/Flint/Madi, Flint/Madi, Silver/Flint, Silver/Madi)
At the rail of a ship James doesn’t command, they stand shoulder to shoulder.
“John still thinks you’re dead,” James states, because it’s something that needs to be said aloud before they continue.
With eyes unblinking toward the rolling sea, Madi says, “And he still thinks you should be dead.”
James’ lip curls in anger. The wounds of betrayal are too fresh for either to say anymore.
Canon-divergent from 4x09, this is a brilliant MadiFlint centric fic exploring their relationship post Silver’s betrayal, and how he could find his way back to them both whilst acknowledging the weight of his actions.
in a vault of starlight by whimsicalimages
7K (Silver/Madi/Flint/Thomas)
The distance between Nassau and Savannah can be measured as: six hundred and thirteen nautical miles, five thousand pounds’ worth of pearls, or four extraordinary lifetimes.
Alternatively: in the aftermath, Madi writes her own story.
There aren’t enough Madi centric fics out there! This one is a lovely extension of canon with a great MadiSilver dynamic in particular.
the aftershocks remain by pdameron
31K (Silver & Miranda, Silver/Flint)
For as long as he can remember, John Silver has been able to see ghosts. He has no trouble keeping this secret from Flint - until Charlestown. Until Miranda.
Again all of pdameron’s fics are brilliant but I loooove this SilverMiranda centric one, plus who doesn’t love a ghost!au.

Note
Thanks for recommending Gideon the Ninth! It was so good! Do you have a book rec tag I could check out? :)
honestly i should, huh? i’ve read more books than probably ever before this year and i’ve talked about ‘em intermittently, but not with a consistent tag. i’ll recommend some right now, though, with a healthy dose of recency bias!
sf/f
the priory of the orange tree by samantha shannon - a truly epic fantasy novel with one of the most beautiful, satisfying f/f romances i’ve ever read. the novel takes account nearly everything i hate about fantasy as a genre (overwhelmingly straight, white, and male centric, bland medieval European settings, tired tropes) and subverts them. incredible world-building, diverse fantasy cultures, really cool arthrurian legend influence. one of my favorite books i’ve ever read tbh.
gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir - which you’ve read, obviously, but for posterity’s sake i’m keeping it here! sci-fi + murder mystery + gothic horror. genuinely funny while still having a super strong emotional core and more than enough gnarly necromantic to satisfy the horror nerd in me. makes use of some of my favorite tropes in fiction, namely the slowburn childhood enemies to reluctant allies to friends to ??? progression between gideon and harrow. absolutely frothing at the mouth for a sequel.
the broken earth trilogy by nk jemisin - really the first book that helped me realize i don’t hate fantasy, i just hate the mainstream ‘medieval europe but with magic’ version of fantasy that dominates the genre. EXTREMELY cool worldbuilding. i’ve definitely described it as like, a GOOD version of what the mage-vs-templar conflict in dragon age could have been, with a storyline particularly reminiscent of “what if someone got Anders right?”
this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone - i’m not usually big on epistolary novels, but this one really worked for me. spy vs spy but it’s gay and takes place between time traveling agents of two opposing sides of a war. the letter writing format really plays to el-mohtar’s strengths as a poet, the unfolding love story is weird and beautiful. it’s a really quick read, too, if you’re short on time or attention.
empress of forever  by max gladstone - i just finished this one this week! if you’re in the mood for a space opera, look no further. imagine if steve jobs was an asian lesbian and also like not a shitty person. this is where you start with vivian liao. you get the classic putting-the-band-together arc with beings from all across the universe, your romances and enemies-turned-friends and uneasy alliances all over the place. really satisfying character development and some extremely cool twists along the way. it’s just a fun good time.
the luminous dead by caitlin starling - this one rides the line of horror so it’s closest to that part of the list. it reminds me of the most inventive low budget horror/sci-fi films i’ve loved in the best way possible because it makes use of the barest narrative resources. it’s a book that takes place in one primary setting, featuring interactions between two characters that only meet each other face-to-face for the briefest period. the tension between the two characters is the most compelling part of the story, with competing and increasingly unreliable narratives and an eerie backdrop to ratchet things up even higher. the author described it as “queer trust kink” at one point which is, uh, super apt actually and totally my jam. the relationship at the center of the book is complicated to say the least, outright combative at points, but super compelling. plus there’s lost of gnarly sci-fi spelunking if you like stories about people wandering around in caves.
horror
the ballad of black tom by victor lavalle - we all agree that while lovecraft introduced/popularized some cool elements into horror and kind of defined what cosmic horror would come to mean, he was a racist sack of shit. which is why my favorite type of ‘lovecraftian horror’ is the type that openly challenges his abhorrent views. the ballad of black tom is a retelling of the horror at redhook that flips the narrative by centering the action around a black protagonist.
lovecraft country by matt ruff - more of what i just described. again, lovecraftian themes centered around black protagonists. this one’s especially cool because it’s a series of interconnected short stories following related characters. it’s getting a tv adaptation i believe, but the book is definitely not to be missed
rolling in the deep / into the drowning deep by mira grant - mermaids are real and they’re the ultimate deep sea predators! that’s really the whole premise. if for some reason that’s not enough for you, let me add this: diverse cast, a romance between a bi woman who’s not afraid to use the word and an autistic lesbian, really cool speculative science tangents about mermaid biology and myth.
the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson - it’s halloween month so i’m thinking about hill house again. one of the greatest american ghost stories ever written. especially worth the read if you follow it up w the 1964 film adaptation (the haunting) and then the 2018 netflix series.
the hunger by alma katsu - i’ve always been fascinated by the donner party even though we now know the popular narrative is largely falsehoods. still, this highly fictionalized version of events scratched an itch for me and ended up surprising me with its resistance from the most expected and toxic racist tropes associated with donner party myth.
wounds / north american lake monsters by nathan ballingrud - nathan ballingrud is my favorite horror writer of all time. one of my favorite writers period regardless of genre. in ballingrud’s work the horror is right in front of you. you can look directly at it, it’s right there. but what permeates it, what draws your attention instead, what makes it hurt is the brutally honest emotional core of everything surrounding the horror. the human tragedy that’s’ reflected by the more fantastic horror elements is the heart of his work. it’s always deeply, profoundly moving for me. both of these collections are technically short stories, but they’re in the horror section of the recs because delineations are totally arbitrary and made solely at my discretion.
short stories
her body and other parties by carmen maria machado - tbh i almost put this in w horror but there’s enough weird fiction here for me to be willing to straddle the line. it was really refreshing to read horror that centered queer women’s perspectives. the stories in this collection are really diverse and super powerful. there’s an incredible weird fiction piece that’s like prompt-based law and order svu micro fiction (go with me here) that ends up going to some incredible places. there’s the husband stitch, a story that devastated me in ways i’m still unraveling. the final story reminded me of a more contemporary haunting of hill house in the best way possible. machado is a writer i’m really excited about.
vampires in the lemon grove by karen russell - my friend zach recommended this to me when we were swapping book recs earlier this year and i went wild for it! mostly weird fiction, but i’m not really interested in getting hung up on genres. i don’t know what to say about this really other than i really loved it and it got me excited about reading in a way i haven’t been in a while.
the tenth of december by george saunders - i really like saunders’ work and i feel like the tenth of december is a great place to start reading him. quirky without being cloying, weird without being unrelatable.
misc
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid - there’s something really compelling to me about the glamour of old hollywood. this story is framed as a young journalist interviewing a famously reclusive former starlet at the end of her life. the story of how evelyn hugo goes from being the dirt-poor daughter of cuban immigrants to one of the biggest names in hollywood to an old woman facing the end of her life alone is by turns beautiful, inspiring, infuriating and desperately sad. by far the heart of the book is in evelyn finally coming out as bisexual, detailing her decades-long on/off relationship with celia st. james, another actress. evelyn’s life was turbulent, fraught with abuse and the kind of exploitation you can expect from the hollywood machine, but the story is compelling and engaging and i loved reading it.
smoke gets in your eyes by caitlin doughty - a memoir by caitlin doughty, the woman behind the popular ‘ask a mortician’ youtube series. it was a super insightful look into the american death industry and its many flaws as well as an interesting, often moving look at the human relationship with death through the eyes of someone touched by it early and deeply.
love and rockets by los bros hernandez (jaime and gilbert and mario) - this was a big alt comic in the 80s with some series within running on and off through the present. i’m not current, but this book was so important for me as a kid. in particular the locas series, which centered around two queer latina girls coming up in the punk scene in a fictional california town. the beginning starts of a little sci-fi-ish but over time becomes more concerned with slice-of-life personal dramas.

Wonder Woman #45
Previously in hey, remember when Wonder Woman used to be the protagonist of this comic? Does anyone remember that?
Darkseid wants a powerful army, so he’s decided to enslave the Amazons. He built a Stargate capable of reaching Themyscira, and sent Grail through to conquer it single-handedly. The Amazons, being the incredible army that they are, are completely overwhelmed by this invasion of one, and Grail begins zapping them and turning them into parademons, because apparently that’s something she can do now?? And she never thought to use to turn Diana and Jason into her loyal minions, because reasons???
Diana can’t follow Grail because Robinson — either through not paying attention or not giving a shit — has rewritten canon, and now instead of Themyscira being near-impossible to find by design because it houses Ares’ prison, it’s governed by some weird arbitrary rules around not permitting anybody to return after they leave, except if their feet never touched the ground. This is purely an excuse to send Jason through in Diana’s stead.
So instead, Diana has mostly been punching Darkseid ineffectually while raging about how she hates him and wants to hurt him because he killed her daddy. By the end of this issue, she will have done precisely one thing to impact the plot in this entire arc, and it’s love her daddy so much that his ghost comes and beats up Darkseid for her.
The issue opens with parademonised Amazons pouring out of the portal from Themyscira, and Diana, Steve, Jason and the ARGUS goon squad struggling to fight them off.
Since the New 52 relaunch, the Amazons have — with the exception of Rucka’s year on the book — alternately been turned into beasts, killed people en masse, or been killed en masse. So of course Robinson managed to find a way to incorporate all three. This isn’t something unique to the New 52 — between 1986 and 2011, I don’t think there was a single extended run on Wondy that didn’t involve a mass slaughter of Amazons — but it doesn’t make it any less awful this time.
Robinson’s exposition goes into double-time, as the characters frantically remind each other/us what happened last issue, while simultaneously Steve’s narration boxes remind us what’s happened so far in this arc.
In amongst this, there’s a hilarious moment where an ARGUS soldier runs over to Steve with Diana’s sword, like it’s just found the Holy Grail.
Tumblr media
“Colonel Trevor, I found it! Wonder Woman’s swor—!”
Wonder Woman’s sword not some magical super-weapon that’s going to turn the tide of the battle. It’s just a sword, same as the ones the Paramazondemons are using.
You know what is a magical super-item that could turn the tide of the battle? The goddamn Lasso of Truth. You know, unbreakable divine relic? Capable of cutting through illusion and mind control, even self-deception? You don’t think it would be worth trying that on your mind-controlled sisters before you start stabbing them?
But suddenly this perfectly ordinary sword is the most important thing in the world! When the ARGUS goon is impaled from behind and drops the sword, Jason swoops in to pick it up.
Tumblr media
“Got it! Sword’s on its way, sister!”
After a brief time out for some more exposition, Jason tosses Diana the sword and flies through the portal (because his feet never touched the ground the first time he was there blah blah).
Jason’s powers still look idiotic, and Temofonte’s lettering choices are still irritating.
Tumblr media
Steve [narration]: I have to admit… I’m starting to like Diana’s brother.
Good lord, why? Since when?!
A couple of hours ago, Steve disliked Jason on account of Jason being a reckless, glory-hounding, dangerously inexperienced, untrustworthy wanker.  He spent a lot of time listing all the reasons he didn’t trust him!  And all of those things still hold true. Maybe Jason’s taking this fight a little more seriously than previous ones, but he’s still substantially the same person that he was two hours earlier. Realistically, Steve should be less than thrilled that his people’s lives and the lives of the Amazons are in the hands of an untrained, undisciplined, ego-driven turncoat whose recent exploits include henching for Darkseid, trying to kill Diana and acquiring super-powered armour under suspiciously vague circumstances.
Now with that all-important sword in hand, Diana continues to be… pretty ineffectual against Darkseid.
Diana calls Darkseid insane. This is something she’s been doing at least once every issue, and each time she does, it grates on me. Part of it’s the excessively casual use of pejoratives — because even by the standards of the superhero genre, which historically hasn’t been great at handling mental illness and is quick to default to labels like ‘crazy’ and ‘mad’ and ‘insane’, Robinson’s Diana throws these words around a lot, and it’s deeply out of character.
But more than that, it makes no sense, because of all the characters in this godforsaken comic, Darkseid’s behaviour may be the least erratic. His agenda has been consistent from day one: he wants to regain his power so that he can retake Apokolips, and all of his actions have been effectively targeted to take him towards that goal. He’s cruel, ruthless, callous, vicious, dictatorial and arguably evil, but you couldn’t really call him “insane”.
It gets worse, because the reason Diana thinks Darkseid is mentally unstable is that — even having had it spelled out to her three issues ago by Grail under the compulsion of the Lasso — she still can’t figure out what his plan is. “I know you’re insane, Darkseid,” she says, “but this — transforming my sisters into parademons — this madness has no rhyme at all.”
At this stage, Diana knows
Darkseid wants an army — one that is both extremely powerful and unquestioningly loyal (per Grail),
With this objective in mind, Darkseid has gone to great lengths to open a portal to Themyscira, and
Now Grail has gone to Themyscira, where she is turning Amazons into extremely powerful and unquestioningly loyal parademons
…and she still can’t put the fucking pieces together. That’s how checked out of the plot Diana is: we’re ten pages from the end of the arc, and the villain is forced to explain to her what she should have twigged to sixty pages ago.
Jason enters Themyscira and sees Hippolyta fighting Grail. He rushes to her aid, but in a rare non-terrible writing decision from Robinson, his presence is entirely unnecessary: Hippolyta proves perfectly capable of taking down Grail without any help.
Cue the nauseating reunion.
Tumblr media
Jason: Mother! It’s me. I… I’m your son! Hippolyta: Jason? Oh, my beautiful boy. It is you. To finally see your face—
Tumblr media
Diana, meanwhile, continues to be completely ineffectual. Battered by Darkseid, she whimpers to Steve that she’s starting to think that she can’t win. Steve tells her that no matter what, he loves her, and Diana sits bolt upright.
Tumblr media
“That’s it, Steve! LOVE! Hatred won’t win this — violence — but love just might!”
Tumblr media
Look, I’m glad that Robinson has finally figured out that Diana’s greatest strength as a hero is the depth of her love and compassion, rather than a propensity for excessive violence — because, hey, better late than never — but this is straight out of left field.
And the annoying thing is, under other circumstances, this plot point — Diana besting Darkseid not through force, but through love — could be done well. Has been done, in fact, fifteen-odd years ago by Phil Jimenez.
Good comics interlude: During the ‘Our Worlds at War’ crossover, Diana has to team up with Darkseid to save the universe. With Raven’s help, she channels her faith and the faith of all her sisters into Darkseid in order to restore his power so that he can blah blah convoluted plot stuff. At the story’s end, Darkseid gloats that he is back at the height of his power, while Diana has lost almost everything — her mother has been killed, along with hundreds of other Amazons. Themyscira is no more. Diana even lost a piece of her very soul to Darkseid through the act of empowering him.
Diana smiles slowly.
Tumblr media
“Surely you must be joking, Darkseid? Or don’t you know?
When Raven channelled our energies through you, she infected your dark spirit. She didn’t just give you my power, she used her empathic powers to fuse that part of my soul into your own. A part that I give freely, each and every day… and which you took gladly, without understanding the consequences.
There’s a piece of me inside you now, Darkseid. A piece that believes more than anything in joy and hope and peace. So ponder on that, New God — each and every time your feelings and actions are tainted by some undeniable longing for kindness… or the next time the Fates decide you should commit an unidentifiable act of compassion towards your minions and people in the name of some abstraction called ‘love’. Ponder that.”
SHE INFECTED HIM WITH HER SOUL SHE IS SUCH A FUCKING BOSS.
A year and a half later, Jimenez delivers an insight into just what this means for Darkseid. And while he’s much the same villain as before, there’s a stubborn splinter of pure compassion embedded deep within his soul. It torments and infuriates him. Every so often, it drives him to feel things, do things entirely alien to him — like show mercy to a slave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Darkseid: Foul woman! What have you done to me? Diana: What’s wrong, Darkseid? Had moment or two of inexplicable compassion? I warned you. The portion of my soul you stole will corrupt you from the inside out. You’ll be kissing babies and freeing slaves before you know it. Darkseid: What do you want, Amazon? Diana: Just to remind you of your invitation, New God. It seems some of the Amazons are actually willing to forgive you for your hateful transgressions against them and would like to negotiate a more peaceful relationship with the Lord of Apokolips. You should come. Who knows? You might even learn a thing or two. Although it seems to me you’re learning plenty right now… Darkseid: [raging] AAAAAHHHHHHHH!
That’s how Diana owned Darkseid with the power of love last time.
And this is how Robinson’s Diana… enables Zeus’s ghost to own Darkseid on her behalf through the power of her love for her daddy:
Her boyfriend says ‘I love you’, and this gives her an idea. She walks up to Darkseid and informs him that she’s not going to fight, she’s just going to let him pummel her while she aggressively loves Zeus at him. This causes the ghosts of all the gods Darkseid devoured to to pour out of him. Zeus manages to stick around long enough to tell Diana that he’s proud of her, then fades away while Diana’s all ‘noooo daddeeeee come baaaack’. Then Darkseid appears to spontaneously combust, the end.
Tumblr media
Steve points out that whatever happened to Darkseid has affected the portal as well — it’s now closing, with Jason and Grail still on the other side.
Tumblr media
On Themyscira, the Amazons have just about contained their parademonised sisters, when they see that the portal is closing. Cue another nauseating scene of Hippolyta waxing emotional over how much she loves Jason and he’s the best son ever and, here, have this super-special magical god-weapon, why don’t you?
Tumblr media
“Take this spear. Designed by Artemis, crafted by Hephaistos — enchanted and unbreakable.”
boo.
Steve and Diana wait anxiously by the Totally-Not-A-Stargate.
Tumblr media
Steve: So what do you want me to do, Angel? I mean, you can’t go through, obviously… but I could.
What are you talking about, no you bloody couldn’t!
Robinson has been quite clear about the portal rules. They’re dumb rules, and they fly in the face of established canon, but they’re clear.
If you have ever been to Themyscira before, you cannot enter the portal.
You only register as having been to Themyscira if your feet touched the ground.
Steve has been to Themyscira. His feet touched the ground. You cannot go changing up the rules with only four pages to go.
But of course Jason gets back just in time, and Diana is unrealistically excited to see him, and it’s all, ‘I met my mummy and she loves me!’ ‘I met my daddy and he loves me!’ ‘Oh PS, we’ve got a bunch of parademon-Amazons in custody now. I guess maybe somebody should work on turning them back to normal?’
Grail wakes up chained in Ares’ prison. At a cursory glance, this seems like a reasonable solution: Grail is a prisoner, and no prison is more secure than the one Themyscira guards over.
But then, unlike Robinson, I thought about it for more than a second and what the hell this is a terrible idea. The whole point of Themyscira is to prevent anybody who might conspire to release Ares on the world from reaching his prison, and they’ve just locked a supervillain in with him and his evil sons. Unleashing War on the world is exactly the kind of thing Grail would do if it means securing her escape and furthering Darkseid’s plans.
It’s also a dick move on the Amazons’ part, because Grail is supposedly one of their own. She has a lot to atone for, and there would undoubtedly be Amazons who’d want to see her pay for her crimes, but I doubt it would escape the council’s notice that Grail has essentially been used and manipulated by trusted parental figures for her entire life. Her mother bore her, raised her and trained her to be a weapon whose only purpose was to destroy Darkseid. Her father turned her into his loyal minion. She has never been her own person, never had any family that didn’t see her as a means to an end. Surely the Amazons would ultimately see it as their responsibility not just to punish and contain her, but to rehabilitate her. That can’t happen if she’s locked away in a cave with only Ares for company.
Also, you know, she’s probably the best chance they have of curing their parademonised sisters, so… maybe do something about that as well?
Meanwhile, somewhere on Earth, Darkseid is wandering around, naked, human-ish, and amnesiac; the end.

Day 4: Halloweentown
Hey guys! Welcome to day 4 of The Shinning. Today we look at the beloved Disney Channel classic, Halloweentown. Released in 1998, starring Debbie Reynolds, Kimberley J. Brown, Joey Zimmerman, Emily Roeske, and Judith Hoag.
Now I grew up without cable or internet, and didn’t get it in my home till freshman year of high school so I missed out on a lot. I managed to catch some Toonami and early Adult Swim, but missed 90′s Nickelodeon stuff and Disney Channel stuff, so Halloweentown was not a staple of my Halloween growing up as a kid. I was stuck watching whatever scary movie my older brother would rent, and I was really sensitive to horror movies as a kid cause I got it in my head that they were documentaries for some reason.
ANYWAYS
Halloweentown seems to be a staple for a particular age of people. I could kinda see it, it’s not the most terrible Halloween based kids movie, certainly better than Ernest Scared Stupid in a lot of ways. Let’s get into it!
So the premise is fairly simple, yet a little unique. The movie follows the three Cromwell siblings (which honestly, pretty bad ass magical name, just works y’know?). The oldest is Marnie, middle child Dylan, and youngest Sophie who are banned from celebrating Halloween by their stern, but loving mother, Gwen. Gwen doesn’t want the kids partaking in anything resembling the weird, the strange, or occult, which is a bummer for Marnie cause she’s showing early signs of gothism (it’s a disease where you wear all black and develop a stick up your ass about this whole “being alive” thing). Dylan is a shitty little kiss ass, and Sophie is the sweet one.
Marnie and her mom argue the merits of celebrating Halloween, with Sophie saying very vague things as to why she won’t let them go out on Halloween, and around now is when you pick up that there’s something up with the whole family, that would probably be a much more simple issue if Sophie sat her kids down and explained what the situation was, and why she doesn’t want her kids to celebrate Halloween, but no, it’s the 90′s and we haven’t found a way around complex situations that could be avoided with simple solutions.
Sorry, just venting, you watch too many shows on the WB/CW, you notice a pattern (looking at you Arrowverse, and Supernatural...and practically every show on that channel).
Anyways, through early photoshop comes...DEBBIE REYNOLDS! I know, I was just as surprised as you. First Eartha Kitt then Debbie Reynolds, classic leading ladies popping up where you least suspect them, and y’know what, they do some damn great work in each one. Back to Debbie though, Debbie comes off the bad SFX Magic Bus and heads over, a magic bag in tow to Gwen’s house, and as it turns out she’s Gwen’s mother! We can figure out where this is going, yes? Gwen is a witch too, and her children are also magically inclined, but Gwen refuses to teach them any magic cause her deceased husband was human, and she wants to raise the kids as human.
No real mention if that’s what dear old dad wanted before he died. No cause is mentioned besides the fact that he was human.
Debbie Reynolds, who plays Aggie (she wasn’t just being Debbie Reynolds, though it would explain how amazing that family is) has come to ask her daughter for help. Back in her home of Halloweentown, the inhabitants have been acting strange, kinda evil, then disappearing. Gwen wants nothing to do with any magical business, and tells her mom that she’s just being paranoid. What Gwen and Aggie don’t realize is that Marnie has heard all of this, the magic, the snide remarks I made toward the goths, all of it!
Marnie has taken it upon herself to go and help her grandmother, and also learn magic cause apparently this is her last chance to learn it before her powers disappear, I dunno, they got some weird rules in this world.
So as Marnie is planning on sneaking out, Dylan tags along, despite everything about him indicating he’s not that type of character. So they both sneak onto the magic spooky bus and are transported to the magical realm where monsters, ghosts, witches, and all that live peacefully away from humans. They meet the mayor, who may or may not be a the villain. They get to grandma’s house, and convince her to that they could help, and that Marnie can learn a thing or two.
Also it’s mentioned that time moves differently in Halloweentown, but honestly, it feels like so made up. I know this a movie where we have a skeleton cabby, and a tooth fairy dentist working on a vampire, but seriously, their idea of time is kinda arbitrary compared to our world.
So as the kids and Aggie are going around the town, we learn and see more of the town, kinda got the vibe that this would’ve been the closet America got to Harry Potter cause we have a hidden magical world, a young hero who learns of their powers before they’re adults, and a bunch of other magical shit going on. Mind you, the first Harry Potter book was released in the States about a whole month before this was aired. What’s the point I’m trying to make? None, just kinda interesting y’know.
While this is going on, Gwen has figured out the kids have snuck out, and heads to Halloweentown to get the kids. Once she gets there, we see that her and the mayor had a bit of thing before she met her kids’ dad. She tries to get them back, but can’t get a bus back so quickly. This leads some time for Marnie and her mom to argue about why her mom would keep this part of culture away from her and her siblings, and that they had a right to know. Gwen responds with pretty much the same reasoning she gave Aggie. To be honest I was with Marnie this whole time. As a person who was raised with only one aspect of my cultural background, you don’t feel as a whole of a person as you should. But her would like totally disappear if she didn’t even learn anything so I guess I have it a bit better.
Honestly Gwen’s reasoning is weak.
So at this point our villain makes his appearance, making the inhabitants into assholes and then freezing them, getting them ready for something, for some reason. Aggie tries to face him off alone, but Gwen steps in to help, and even takes a shot for her mom. The shot freezes Gwen, and the next one gets Aggie. Before Aggie freezes completely she urges Marnie to finish the spell that could save the town.
This leads to the weakest part of the film. The kids go on hijinks and adventures getting the ingredients for the spell’s recipe. Some of it is okay, most of it is boring. So after the kids get the stuff together, they put it into this talisman. The kids head to the center of town, where our villain reveals himself to the public, and says his plan. Kinda. He wants to make everyone evil and attack the humans for some reason. The motive isn’t really clear. The villain then reveals himself further (don’t worry, this is Disney), to reveal that he was the mayor the whole time! Gasp!
Tumblr media
Pretty obvious the whole time. Only made more obvious by each appearance of the guy. Marnie is able to reserve the evil curse and unfreeze everyone. And with the whole family putting energy into it, they murder the mayor in front of the whole town. Yay! Evil is vanquished, death to the bourgeoisie! Yay, he’s vanquished or whatever, the family goes back home, Gwen has decided that she will in fact train her kids in magic, with grandma Aggie coming around more often to help out and assist.
So some things off the bat, I may sound like I’m shitting on this, but I actually enjoyed it. The cast is nice as a whole and isn’t reliant on just one actor like Ernest Scared Stupid was with Jim Varney. Well maybe except for Dylan he played the typical 90′s nerd and wasn’t that likable. I blame the 90′s for that, not the actor, kid was just trying to make a buck.
Debbie Reynolds was a such a sweet lady and knows when to hold back, and when to chew scenery. When she has that stand off with the villain, you can hear her voice is taking a more dramatic tone and how she acts in that scene has some nice subtlety. Her talent is missed.
The music in this is just very 90′s. A lot of xylophone’s and “spooky” music. Also random crows throughout the movie. The story has a little more than what I would think for a Disney Channel movie. LIke to hide that big of a secret was interesting to see, it’s just a shame that it didn’t pay off in the end. Like there should’ve been real consequences to Marnie finding out she was a witch or a believable reason for Gwen to keep this from her kids. The mayor’s motive was pretty much “ah fuck it, let’s be evil you guys!” and that weakened the movie to me. Either than that the dialogue is a lot better written for the kids than it was for Ernest and it can be funny. Sometimes it isn’t, but it has it’s moments.
Also there was a PENTAGRAM shown and called as such on DISNEY Channel. Listen I’m amazed that Gravity Falls got away with the pseudo-occult stuff it did, this one straight out put a pentagram in the movie, and it’s an accessory that Marnie wears throughout the film.
The makeup in this is really cool. It’s practical look for the wear, but it makes them to be a believable living being in this world. Some seem to have really big round chins. Don’t know if that was the actors or the make up. Just something I noticed watching this.
I can see why this would be a staple for kids growing up. It has definite charm to it, and it’s not dripping in that 90′s cheesiness that Ernest had. Of the two live action films I’ve covered this week, this is the better one, and I wouldn’t mind watching it again. Kinda want to see the other ones now too.
Okay guys, that’ll be a wrap on Halloweentown. Next week it’s one I have seen before and I know that I actually like this one!
Hocus Pocus is tomorrow!

Today is April 12th, 2017
While this means almost nothing to most, it means everything to me. Because six months ago today, I told a boy what I felt he meant to me, and he felt similarly. Six months ago today, the tension was lifted between me and this amazing boy, and we grew closer to one another than I have ever been to someone. While it has only been half of a year, I’ve grown to know so much about him, and he taught me an immense amount about myself, especially one major thing. He taught me how to love. After years of loneliness and wall-building, together, we tore down the barriers. I’ve never loved another as much as I love him, and sometimes I worry that I only do so much because I’ve never claimed to love someone who wasn’t as perfect as he is, but I know now, that what I feel for him is genuinely an adoration for him, not a feeling to come simply from being with someone. I believe that we hit the nail on the head the very first try.
@neverdewitt ,
I’ve always been a proponent of the claim that I cannot sum up the words for how I truly feel about you, but that isn’t true in a sense. While my feelings towards you aren’t a direct phrase, they’re a collection of everything I say because of how I feel. The time we spend, the places we go and things we do, it’s all part of the most important experience I have ever had, a collective, six-month-and-counting experience that could never have happened if I hadn’t said the things to you that I did that half of a year ago.
I’ve done a lot of thinking today, a lot of missing you, and a lot of hyping this Saturday, the first time we’ll be able to see each other (aside from a midnight conversation and a walmart run) in three weeks. But what really made me step back and admire these past months were the memories we’ve already made.
Like the time before we had started dating, going to Lancaster just the two of us, and watching a movie that became the got damn cornerstone of our relationship for a while.
Or the time we actually went on our first date, going to St. Peters and coming up with a concept that there’s a bear that lives in the woods, and will steal only a single shoe from you. Or maybe your pants. (Not like that’s a problem for you (Put on some got damn pants, babe!))
What about Halloween? When we spent the day together, and just kind of made people generally uncomfortable from my wounds and your eye
I also specifically remember it was in November that I showed you ERRA, and you only like Drift. I guess I had to introduce you to a band in return for sharing Ghost with me, which became yet another foundation upon which we’ve built a perfect, healthy relationship.
I know for sure that I’ll never forget the first few times we cooked at your house, the very first time, we had avocado wraps. And how you probably still don’t believe it, but I do legitimately love the food we make together
December was a little uneventful, I was kinda-sorta out of a car, but we survived it. Like we always do, because despite the interference of my family we got through it all. We did play Infamous in December though, which I loved enough to want to cosplay good karma, and hey, that’s like, what, fifteen days away?
Something that happened in January was one of my favorite memories because y’know, all we do is lie around and just kinda be close, but I was so unsure about something and took a chance with a kiss on the cheek. Your reaction is something I’ll never ever forget. That made me so genuinely happy to see the way you reacted the first time I did that.
I also loved your birthday, which I still have plans for that I couldn’t accomplish at the time, and still need a bit of prep, but we went to Lancaster for the first time together, did the usual Rabbit and Dragonfly-Issei combo that we’re so fond of. Sorry again that it was so cold, and I promise we’ll do your birthday plans I had soon enough
I realized something today, something that I never thought about until now. I’m dating my best friend. Were we friends before this? Yeah I’d say that. But never really enough that we’d do things on our own outside of a group. This relationship, what we have together is so incredibly important to me. I can joke around with you, and we can listen to music, play games, watch movies, and just generally do menial arbitrary things together, and I enjoy it. This is going to sound weird but I’ve never enjoyed doing dishes more than I have when we were just kind of performing this domestic chore together. But it was made all worth it, just being able to stand next to you while we were cleaning cookware.
I will never find the words for a direct phrase, but I’ve found the feeling I need to tell you how I feel. And in a way, I’ve been saying it over the last half of a year. I love you more than anyone or anything. Happy six months, and I hope only for even more. You are everything to me, and I deeply and truly love every single thing about you with my whole heart.  Tu eres mi cielo, y te amo con todo de mi corazon <3
