A reminder that in this scene, Baek Sa Eon was still entertaining the notion that the caller was a man Hong Hee Joo was probably having an affair with.
Despite the viewers being shown that he really couldn't bring himself to confirm this affair, he was indirectly asking Hee Joo about it to prepare for possible media backlash if they ever go public with the harrassment from the culprit. I think he wanted to prevent the media from feasting on Hee Joo especially if her supposed affair was found out.
But when he was asking and Hee Joo (most likely thinking of her pretending to be the culprit as the "something" she was hiding) looked away from him, he thought she really was having an affair. LOOK AT HIS EXPRESSION. He wanted so bad to be proven wrong but, in his mind, Hee Joo was confirming it.

Listen the way his voice was BREAKING as he SPED THROUGH THE WOODS to save her
The way he was crying as he begged her to wear his jacket and remember to drink water! I die!
Tumblr media
The way all barriers were down but one ... That thin thread of pretense ...
You started this charade and I've pretended to be fine with it but now it's all I can do not to just say what I really feel
You wanted to pretend to be a kidnapper to divorce me so I won't step over the line but I'm here standing next to it begging you to let me in
If they don't kiss for real next episode I'm gonna revolt

You all just need to mark my words here (since I was already damn right about the kiss thing SIR PLEASE?????) Hee Joo would really REALLY GO TO TOWN ON Paek sa on when given the opportunity
Exhibit A: what DO YOU THINK is the probability of her literary falling full stop on his lips like that? Mathematically speaking
Exhibit B: my kinky queen just hugged and cuddled a drunk man who confessed his love to her and fell asleep on the floor like please you all the makers aren’t even trying to hide that we had got it all wrong at the beginning it’s not paek sa on who’s the wattpad coded alpha mafia husband ITS HEE JOO
I can go on and on but, like please one of her primary complaints about their marriage was that they didn’t get to sleep in the same room?? (Girl I get it) and when he asks with the bedroomist eyes known to mankind “would you want that?” SHE NEVER SAYS NO?????? (He Joo is one of us )
And I just hope the kdrama society of girlies (gender neutrally obvi) forever remembers that he Joo never stopped him from from undressing the bow tie on her neck and checking her wound
And was not even slightly concerned, mad isn’t even on the table with us, when he was trying to check if she actually had a mole on her thigh so
Yeah

'When the Phone Rings' OST is SO GOOD
I haven't been watching many kdramas properly for the past year since nothing has been catching my eye, but I'm so glad I took the time to watch When the Phone Rings, because my goddd, we are so BACK besties. This is giving all the feels of the 2016 kdramas that I used to be obsessed with. I think the last time I watched a kdrama as it was airing was It's Okay to Not Be Okay and that was a riiddee. I used to freaking analyze each episode and one of the things I loved most about the show was how much the OSTs used to fit the situation and character perfectly.
The first OST they've released is See the Light by Lim Hyunsik.
youtube
First, what a voice. I love it so much.
Second, THE LYRICCSSS. THE MUSICCC. THE VIBBEEE.
The song manages to capture the mystery between these characters so well. One of the most striking things about this show is that both Baek Sa Eon and Hong Hee Joo are very mysterious - not only are they involved in a dangerous threat situation but the audience doesn't know anything about them. Their pasts haunt them and their relationship, and we are uncovering it piece by piece, which shapes how we see them. This is done so meticulously and the piano at the beginning of the song, the melody, the emotion behind it captures this PERFECTLY.
And I mean, some of the lyrics is so striking - it literally makes the audience understand the characters and their dilemma better. For example,
[Pre-Chorus] Your tender lies gonna make me cry tonight Fall like a dawn when the shades are fading out Now
The things that these two hide from each other dictate how they view each other as emotionally unavailable, cold and confusing. As shocking as it is for her to see him be kind towards her, it is as shocking to him to see her emote, to cry, to shout out in anxiety, to smile at her friends. Although it is easiest for the audience to experience Hong Hee Joo's confusion with her husband, this song shines light upon how Baek Sa Eon feels about his wife.
"Tender lies" is such perfect wording for this - neither of their lies, and especially not hers, is done with ill intention. It's almost like it is a way to protect herself against the world, to exist and survive in it. But the nature of lies, of course, is that is hides you away in darkness, it traps you in it.
Truth, here, frees it. It gives you light. It gives you life, a risky opportunity to live it but the strength to be brave about it as well. When her truth is revealed to him, there is no anger - there is only shock and confusion and a bit of happiness in unlocking an important part of her.
[Chorus] See the light waking up an unfamiliar night Stuck in my heart, hiding the cold words I'll hold you See the light open up your broken heart The deeper heart on my lips Wants you more deeply
The light that comes from truth unveils the darkness of the unfamiliar light - it unveils her broken heart to him in a way that makes him want to hold back his cold words, whether he means those words or not, and makes him want to hold her. Because he of all people also knows what its like to have your secrets revealed, to be vulnerable in the face of the one person who brings out your vulnerability - even if he isn't completely in that stage yet, he definitely is scared of it.
This song helps create a feeling of empathy between the characters, where they are genuinely finding reflections of themselves in each other. It helps us to understand what he is feeling as he discovers that she can speak, as he discovers her feelings.
Honestly, I cannot wait for next week's episodes and for most OSTs to release, because I just know it's all going to be perfect.

YAASSSS YAASSS YAAAASSSSSSS
yep i had to scream for that whole episode. questionable choice of plot to keep the story moving and to make hee joo fell from the cliff. i mean of course it is cute to see baek sa eon being obvious with wanting to be with hee joo.... but dude you're married and your team didn't know that she is actually your wife. i would definitely turn head with your affection for hee joo if i didn't know she's your wife.
i really like how baek sa eon who was unable to tell his feelings to hee joo got a medium through 406 to convey his sincerity. he can never do that without 406 and him knowing that hee joo is on the other side is comforting to him in a way that he is indirectly confessing to her. he was so guarded with his heart. he never make an effort because he was always ready to let her go. because he thought that this marriage was not something that hee joo wants. but since it isn't that way anymore, he is now able to do just what his heart wants. he likes her...
omaigad the amount of OG kdrama plot in this drama is just *chef's kiss* just how it was when i first watch kdrama 20 years ago. just that in WTPR they toned down the ML that makes it less controversial that how it was before. you haven't seen OG kdrama if you say that baek sa eon is a walking red flag cuz I've seen worse. so personally i thought that it is nice to see this kind of drama make a come back again. not to mention that the married couple plot is back again. Full House, Princess Hours, Wedding, Something About 1% was some of my favourite OG kdrama and i always love seing how the misunderstanding in those dramas were what keeping me at the edge of the seat. the angst, the pain, the plain stupidity, the pride and ego, the realising they love their partner so much that they don't know how to rectify their mistake. i miss those... of couse slice of life and romcom kdrama are great too, but i wanted heated arguments, heartache and angsttt more angstttt just to feel like slapping the main leads because they are too stoopid.
and finallyyyy at the end of the year we got the comeback. we almost had it with Queen of Tears but park ji eun was too obsessed of making a dramatic useless multiple much un-needed plot twist until it turns into rubbish. the only good thing that drama give me was Kim Soohyun and Kim Jiwon chemistry yes I'm shipping them forever other than that it was a disappointment.
i hope that WTPR won't dissapoint me as well. i was hoping the 12 eps will do the drama justice if the kdrama writer have lost the ability to create a decent drama with 16 eps. if you can't sustain the plot just shorten and make it concise and actually i like 12 eps kdrama

Listen I am on my rewatch of The Glory and aside from being madly in love with both the romantic and unhinged nature of Joo Yeo Jeong, The absolute disparity between the good and bad parents in this show is killing me.
Dong-Eun’s mom? Absolute piece of trash with no class.
Yeon-Jin’s mom? Karen who thinks money and power can buy you anything.
Yeo-Jeong’s mom? Absolutely 100% supportive, but not stupid and committed to doing the right thing.
Kang Hyeon-Nam? The baddest bitch alive, willing to do anything to save her daughter even if it means endangering herself.
And then you have the disparity between Jae Jun and Do-Hyeong, who both cared about Ye-Sol. Jae Jun only cared about her when it was convenient for him and wanted her not because he truly loved her but because he wanted to possess her. Meanwhile, you have Do-Hyeong who is constantly looking out for Ye-Sol’s best interests even though he isn’t biologically related to her.
NOT ONLY THAT, but you also have Yeo-Jeong’s Dad, who was murdered by a patient while doing what he thought was right by saving him, unintentionally starting his son on the path to revenge.
And like yeah The Glory’s main focus is revenge but it’s also an exquisite commentary on how we pass down, inherit, come to terms with, and outright prevent generational trauma from our parents. It also shows how we can choose to do better or worse than they did based on the relationships we create or take for granted.
Idk man, as a generational trauma cycle breaker myself and mom of an (adopted adult) daughter that also experienced so much of that, this show gets to me on a parenting level in a way I can’t even begin to describe.
(Also Do-Yeong’s relationship with Ye-Sol makes me cry in the best way 🥹)

I loved this scene so much because aside from being a tender scene between the two of them, it was when Baek Sa Eon finally addressed the fact that Hee Joo must have been hurt by the things he said during that first phone call.
It's been several days since the kidnapping and he is late to apologize for it (of course, in true Baek Sa Eon fashion, it wasn't really an apology but what can we do when he fails at communication with his wife?)
As viewers, we all know how affected Hong Hee Joo was when she thought her husband who ignored her for many years didn't even care enough when her life was on the line. I'd go so far as to say that this is something she longed to hear and if not for the threat of her dad's life, may have appeased her wanting to get a divorce. (Well, not to completely abandon the idea, of course.)
The best part is that she instantly fell asleep beside him after looking at his face longingly.
