there’s something so epic about hetero chinese period dramas and i think one part of it is that there is absolutely nowhere in the narrative i could exist.
lately i’ve been on a western media detox— i’ve cleaned english language music out of my playlists and have never been able to stomach western dramas anyway, so that part is easy— which might seem funny, because if i’m in singapore and i hate it and i won’t touch american music then what’s left? the answer is the false binarism of chinese period dramas, at least for me. the badly written ones are misogynistic and stupid and the better ones are less of those things, but regardless the world that emerges is clean-cut and easy to parse. there’s someone to root for and someone to hate. there’s a girl and a boy. there’s the comedy and the drama, the sheer thick drama, the music that signals to you precisely how to feel before the scene even starts going
try to jam a fifth culture transnational transgender they/them with 2 mental illness and 1 autoimmune disease into this world and it simply doesn’t work. and that’s kinda epic lolzers! it’s like watching high fantasy, or super hardcore sci-if. it both represents a simulacrum of the real world and is so far from the reality you know that you understand it as a hypothetical universe, one that disincludes you on principle. i exclude myself from the story and in doing so fangfei from moyuyunjian’s steely gaze becomes all the more important. i give so many shits and laugh and yell and spectate. but i am safe from the eyes of its inhabitants. if i entered the story it would break. so i sit outside of it, clapping by myself
in other news, we gave up on mysterious lotus casebook 16 episodes in. there are many character archetypes in these shows that i can no longer stand; the salacious sexy seductive supervillain lady is not necessarily one of them but the way they did miss ‘this man didn’t even Look at me when all men fall at my knees so i hated him’ ‘no one is allowed to steal buttchin from me’ jiao was way up there. surely a woman can have multiple personality traits and yet you would think from this drama that that is not at all true. and the strange harem that grew around li lianhua despite his absolute loser attitude— like i get it, he’s the gintoki of this show, that’s hot, but the way the women who were into him were written made me want to Eat Horse. it bothered me that di feisheng and lianhua’s homo as fuck dynamic was so intriguing and them + fang duobing was a winning trio but all the women in the show were written like complete fucking ass, and one of the big antagonists being a woman, the stakes throughout were not only lost to me but also Pissed Me Off. also, that case about the corpse flowers dragged on forever and all my pocky wilted
I Just Think, women deserve better in these damn stories. make them slutty as hell, sure, but make them other things too and i mean this in the most generous sense. slutty and proud. slutty and weird. slutty and oblivious. literally anything at all so they don’t come out cardboard flat from all angles. this is why i have a personal vendetta against the ditzy clueless female protagonist as well because if everything stems from the fact that she doesn’t know shit it’s like please someone Please tell her shit i’m on my hands and knees begging. give her more to chew on she’s dying of boredom over there
this is why i liked the so called antagonist of blossoms in adversity best (spoilers ahead). he was cruel as hell to huazhi and gu yanxi’s only parental figure. he was paranoid and selfish and lonely and craved a son’s love from the one person he couldn’t hold onto. in the end he is pushed further and further by huazhi, who won’t give in, to isolate yanxi from the people he loves and to lash out at those people as a way of punishing yanxi. and when he dies it’s because of his own distrust, his own negligent parenting, his absent cruelty from decades of insomnia and lack of faith in his people. but he cries for yanxi, and there’s something so human about that. to think of evil not as a first principle but rather an adjective for a verb that is set in motion by other events. to be honest, i haven’t seen such thoughtful writing in any chinese period drama before or after that and i strongly suspect i will never see such writing again in this genre but man, it was so fucking good (spoilers end).
in the meantime, i’ve dragged my mother to moyuyunjian/the double for the return casting of liu xiening and wang xingyue who are Eating so hard. they’ve got wang xingyue done up with the sluttiest makeup and liu xiening is breaking my heart with her pout and her Sassy Mean constitution and this is a revenge story, yes, but it’s a double revenge story. it’s a grief story. and fangfei is carrying more on her shoulders than lingbuyi imo, and doing so with much more grace too. her step mom’s a dick but she’s a smart, 5d chess playing dick who wears hot shades of green so i’m personally interested enough to keep watching (something lotus casebook DID NOT accomplish with their epic female antagonist…. mein gotte). and the princess too. unhinged as hell but god, so charismatic. and beautiful, with scary big eyes and the sweetest head tilt. fun fun fun! that’s fun character writing right there. the comedy might be too straightforward for my tastes but everything else is kind of hot and sexy And after the coming of age ceremony when jiangli appeared amidst the flowers i felt my throat close up even though we saw her for all of one (1) episode). i was like yes. they got me alright. i Care now
really that’s all that matters isn’t it. we want stories about people we care for. we want to give a shit. why else would we listen to the stories of other people. we are looking for us and the people we love in them
oh also moyuyunjian soundtrack goes hard as hell i love a little three step waltz. here’s a pic from the ‘gym’ for ur time. guten night
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#gelmo#i get so. i get so angry when women write ass female characters like fr ur kicking urself in the crotch rn#you can be innocent/clueless about The World and still be so compelling#thinking about guxiang from word of honor. she was goofy and oblivious but she also had Teeth#and she was strong! and had opinions and stuff#so important to have opinions….. especially in the pre internet age#i hage so many more thoughts on this topic but i took melatonin which should knock me out so#this is not a well organized argumentative essay this is just me yapping in an empty room#but yeah i was disappointed at lotus casebook. particularly given its high as fuck reviews#reviews? i mean ratings. and stellar reviews or whatever#also the ending (sans 24 episodes of context granted) was ASS i was like ??? it’s over ??? surely not#idk it didn’t work for me. glad it worked for some other homies. fang duobing let me rescue u and the dog from this shit ass story#anyway……….. i have been unable to listen to english language music in some weeks now#this is quite major for me. given my 2 year indie folk phase. but i need a break from america and the ideological west at large#no more taylor biden…. justin kahan…………#just my chinese drama insert songs nct 127’s sixth album WALK and jacky cheung#it’s true i keep landing myself in these spots where i’m sick of america and i’m sick of singapore so how are my friends (from these two#countries) supposed to approach me. well the answer is they are not the country but it’s trhe i am in one of those weird holes right now#glad i’ll be leaving in august briefly! watch me go. awooooo

Online Safety Relevant to the Current State of the Internet
On twitter I made a tweet about how online safety lessons in school can be very out of touch but that the advice of people who are familiar with the current internet shouldn't be disregarded. So here's my informal collection of online safety tips
Sources: unrestricted internet access since elementary school (not recommended), being a formerly involuntarily home bound person for several years that amassed way too much online experience
This could possibly hold upsetting reminders to people who had bad experiences online including mentions of grooming and emotional manipulation so please proceed with caution!
Information Sharing
Make an online pseudonym for public profiles and websites.
Don’t feel like you have to list everything about you for the world to see.
Sometimes it’s not a question of “can this information be used to locate and identify me irl?”, but simply “do I want this information publicly available and linked to my online persona?”
Unlike offline, being online leaves a constant trail of who you were accessible at all times. People are constantly growing and changing. Try to limit the information you share so you can ditch that trail and start over if need be.
Sharing information with people you make friends with and trust is a judgement call on your part, but always be on the safe side and be protective of your information.
Start as cautious as possible with online safety. Any risks or judgement calls can come later when you are 1. aware of the risks, 2. ready to address them if they occur, and 3. have gathered plenty of information instead of doing something blindly and hoping for the best.
Do not share your triggers publicly, they can very easily be used against you. Instead use websites with a large amount of filtering options to curate your online experience. If you are going to share them, only do it privately with people you trust.
Importance of Boundaries
It doesn’t matter how mature you are, don’t enter age limited spaces you don’t qualify for. It’s disrespectful to the boundaries of the people who made that space. Boundaries like this exist for the comfort of both sides involved.
Just because you can “handle it” doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Desensitization is not something to brag about.
Venting or making r18 posts as a minor on a public account is VERY dangerous. Intense emotional vulnerability is something manipulators will look for as a way to get to you. The same with sexual jokes to develop your comfort talking about those topics casually and eventually escalating the situation. If you are going to talk about such things please keep that in private conversations with people you trust in your age group.
Note the difference between public and private online space. Tweeting something on a public account is not the same as having a conversation in the cafeteria with your friends.
If an adult tries talking to you about r18, run the other way. Doesn’t matter how cool you are, it says something weird about THEM if they’re willing to talk to a minor about that stuff.
If someone( like 3+ years, honestly depends on how old you are) older than you wouldn't be comfortable saying what they're saying to you in front of other people (like a teacher or guardian), that's suspicious as hell. Run in the other direction.
The younger you are, the more age gaps matter. There's a bigger difference in development between a 13 year old and a 17 year old than there is between a 20 year old and a 24 year old. It helps to try to contextualize it with real people instead of numbers. Instead of thinking "oh just 4 years? that's not that weird" consider "oh. that would be like a freshman (13/14) dating a senior (17/18). yikes."
Be just as wary of people your own age talking about things that make you uncomfortable. Just like irl, sometimes you’ll meet people your age that are hurtful.
Friends complain to each other and talk about their issues, that alone is fine. But when people are doing it without permission, draw a line. When people are making it feel like you’re responsible for maintaining their mental health, you need to draw a line. When it starts to effect your mental health, PLEASE DRAW A LINE! I know it feels like your responsibility sometimes, but it’s not. You cannot be there for others if you’re not taking care of yourself first and foremost.
Don’t be afraid to block people. Even for petty reasons. It’s good to block people. Don’t force yourself to see stuff you don’t want to see.
Being Constantly Online
The 24 hour news cycle is not a good thing to follow 24/7. Taking social responsibility is a good thing, but your brain is NOT built to worry about every issue in the world at once. One strategy I use for staying sane is I try to only check the news once a day, and if something needs more attention to set aside an amount of time I’m going to focus on it before I need to take time to step back.
Touch grass. Not literally, unless you can in which case I highly suggest it, sometimes it’s just good to lay in a field. What I mean is you need to dedicate a good portion of your time to being offline (sleep does not count). What your offline time looks like is going to differ depending on your level of ability, but even if you are house bound it’s important to build some hobbies that don’t rely on the internet. Talking to people offline is also a good goal if possible, even just to your housemates.
Social etiquette greatly differs online and offline and sometimes the reminder that were all just Some People gets lost behind the numbers and the fabricated personas. Keep in mind the difference in how information is shared without forgetting that the fact we are all people remains the same.
Be generous with your etiquette. You will avoid a lot of stress if you conduct yourself with the same politeness you would have in an offline interaction. Master the art of "minding your own business" for your own sake.
Arguments and Competition
As soon as you can, you need to internalize the fact that leaving an argument is not losing.
It is inevitable you will be exposed to many people who disagree with you. Some people only want to argue to rile you up. Sometimes that’s not their intention, but it’s what they’re doing. You do not have to remain in conversation with people, especially if they’re not interested in actually coming to an understanding. Even if they are interested, sometimes they just suck!! Leave!! You can leave!!
On that note, sometimes you are going to get valid criticism and it’s going to hurt. That is part of learning. If someone says you messed up and did something hurtful, take a second to step back from your defensiveness and consider: intent ≠ effect. Apologize, repair what you can, and move forward with the ability to do better in the future. You’re going to mess up every once in awhile, it’s inevitable.
To summarize the past two points: don't waste your time on unnecessary hostility but don't close yourself into an echo chamber either. Debates should be about learning.
Sometimes people are not going to like you. This happens offline too but people tend to be a lot more blunt online. Sometimes people dislike you for no reason or for really petty reasons. That’s not your problem, move on.
Don’t actively seek out people you don’t like or who don’t like you to argue with. Whether or not your side is the “right side” doesn’t matter, it’s going to cause you so much unnecessary stress. Feel free to keep posting your opinions on your own profile but don’t seek out unnecessary conflict.
This is a different type of competition than previously mentioned, but be aware of the danger of comparing yourself to other people. Especially if you’re a creative or student, DO NOT GET SWEPT UP IN THE GRIND CULTURE. It’s more subtle in some places than others, but anytime you see the notion that you should be working yourself to the bone be VERY critical. Also be critical of any online cultures (such as gaming and art communities) that brag about unhealthy habits or act like it’s ~part of the culture~ (ex: all nighters, not taking breaks, getting hurt. Any activity that neglects health to work toward a goal).
Not just grind culture, any community of subculture that shares anti recovery sentiments is a huge red flag. Even if they're joking, it's not worth the risk of internalizing those statements.
Everyone’s social media presence is to some degree doctored because it’s a purposefully selected collection of what they allow you to see. It’s fine to like the persona you see being displayed, but never forget that it is not reflective of the entire person. Everyone online is JUST SOME PERSON. Do not forget that and start holding yourself to a standard you can’t even see every side of.
By posting online you are opening yourself to criticism. Whether or not it’s justified can vary, but either way it’s going to happen. Mute stuff, go private, disable comments, etc if you need to.
Misc Tidbits
these are technically just general info that is also good for offline but I have seen things that make me think people online need the extra reminder.
Learn what cults are, how they recruit, and what they do to their members. I'm not kidding. This is particularly relevant at the moment because of current societal unrest and widespread loneliness. No one is immune to cult propaganda, and not every cult is based on pre established religion or family. Many exist ONLINE and are able to manipulate people without ever meeting face to face. Familiarize yourself with the concept of pseudoscience. Please familiarize yourself with the concept of pseudoscience and then learn how to identify pseudoscience. (learn more: Karl Popper, Science, & Pseudoscience: Crash Course Philosophy #8)
Q. How do I know if a source is reliable?
Final Thoughts
It's important people of ALL ages learn these lessons, because the internet is constantly changing and we are all vulnerable when in the presence of other people.
Be cautious and stay safe

Fanfic ask. nr 8
what’s your relationship with constructive criticism and feedback like? do you seek it out? how well do you take it?
huh this is an interesting one and at first I thought I didn't have that much to say in response, but I've been thinking so bare with me for a long rambling answer.
So here's the thing, let me say I've been writing and sharing my writing for a long time, either through roleplaying on GaiaOnline (showing my age here, eh?), with friends, or fanfiction. And I'll be honest, I'm very good at forgetting things. I have a horrible memory. So while I'm sure I've had plenty of experience with constructive criticism and feedback, I literally cannot remember past my experiences before LTF when I was writing heroaca fics and even that is hazy and vague.
Thus, this is less an answer of what I actually do or have done, but mostly in hypothetical to define my current opinions.
For starters, let me go on a tangent that I've seen discussed in creative circles and beyond fairly often that I think is important to bring up. The internet has a horrible relationship with boundaries. All too often we can see instances of randos being too familiar, horribly rude, to downright cruel to others while online. And when it comes to creative content on the internet, some try to defend their behavior behind "constructive criticism."
But for a good majority of constructive criticism to actually be constructive, I'm of the belief there needs to be a pre-existing relationship of some sort between the creator and the one delivering the constructive feedback. While working on LTF I'm constantly going to my dear friend and beta, Morgan, for their thoughts and opinions about story beats, character development, plot lines, etc etc. I know they want the best for my story, and understand my intentions/where the story is going, and trust wholeheartedly in anything they have to say to me. There's times where they say I need to rewrite a line or two, or that I need to add something more to a scene, and I can go back and immediately see how right they are and that doing so elevates the story.
If I received an anon here on Tumblr, or a random commenter on my fic giving my suggestions of things to change in my story, I would probably, mostly ignore them. If there's a story element someone doesn't like, or thinks lands wrong, or have things to say about my prose itself, I might think about their critiques some. Might go back and see if I find any validity to what they're saying, but ultimately probably wouldn't change a thing. It's my fanfiction and I'm writing it for fun and enjoyment, the fact that others also get fun and enjoyment out of it is an added bonus.
The exceptions to this mindset are actual mistakes. I had a one-off character a few parts back in LTF that I introduced with their name spelled one way, and then spelled it wrong the rest of the chapter. Neither I nor Morgan caught that WHOOPS. Someone pointed it out in the comments and gosh was I thankful for that note and ran in to edit the chapter then and there lol Just had something similar with a plot point last week too ahha Things like that I'm super thankful for because they're helpful quickfixes!
Another exception would be anything that falls into the realm of insensitivity or perpetuating harmful stereotypes. I'm just one person who's lived just one life, and while I do my best to expand my views and thoughts to lives of which I could never personally experience, I know I still run the risk of getting something wrong, especially while working on an ATLA fic that tries to expand on the worldbuilding of a show made by USAmericans inspired by Asian and circumpolar cultures. I've created so many characters, expanded on minor characters, tried to give more depth to the history and practices of the nations. Somewhere in there or in the future, I wouldn't be surprised if I misstep. I'd welcome any critique on those aspects, and would definitely work to fix anything insensitive or wrong in my portrayals.
So tl;dr I seek concrit from people I trust, appreciate quick fixes, and would say a big YIKES at myself if I fucked up depictions of gender/race/culture in LTF but would be glad someone had the knowledge to correct me.
If anyone else would like to inspire some rambling lol

AIN’T NO CINDERELLA CAMPAIGN
That was a quiet alone highway and there is a Scooty passes by…. All of the sudden there is a
woman screaming sound… Don’t you hear or see such an articles in any media? Did you felt
each and every second in somewhere, some girl is getting abused? So, this is the case and is
completely destroy by a single powerful weapon named “Women Empowerment”
I strongly believe the women is a multi-tasker due to her inner confidence to raise the kid, to
take responsibilities of senior citizens and also the career what she dreamt. The women is
given importance throughout the universe because the women empowerment helps in
boosting the status of women through literacy, education, training and awareness creation.
In prior the women if they are not treated equally, they feel it inside and left behind. But
recent days the internet is playing an important role for any cause that against the female
inequality. For such instance, you all should be aware of # ME TOO and it went quite viral in
social media that is due to the women of course, got abused and yet they felt it ashamed to
express in public but this project brought all the ashamed for played in every single women
life.
Like the same as Me Too campaign there is another campaign after a victim Varnika Kundu
and it becomes viral of stalking behind women as portrayal of feminine body shape. It is said
to be #aintnocinderella.
For a insolence or sedition to occur, the norm or rule has to be firmly in place to necessitate
the deviance, and “Cinderella” being one of the foundational myths fed to little girls at an
impressionable age, forms just such an edict in our male-controlled society.
The values that it tracks on young minds are that a girl needs to suffer and sacrifice, be
acquiescent and compatible in order to be “rewarded” in life. The rewards too are already
decided for her and her reluctance to discord, be it against an oppressive Step-mother or her
pre-determined fate, is seen as a virtue. The Cinderella syndrome is peppered over most of
our cultural texts, especially conventional cinema and chick-lit. Accordingly, it is promising
to see that the girls who are taught to aspire to be Cinderellas’ now proudly criticize and
reject this idea, as is being seen in the #AintNoCinderella tweets.
This campaign comes in the wake of a concerted effort by feminists and activists who have
been voicing their protests against the complete violence and tyranny of women, often taking
to the streets and social media to conspicuous their protests.
Although it has developed common place for people in power to point fingers at women
rather than the offenders, the times must indeed be changing for Bhatti to have been accused
that pierce the heart of masculine dominant will erase out as magic. It is an obligation of each
by his own party members, like Kirron Kher. With the #Aint No Cinderella movement, it is
no longer a matter of individual opinions, but a thread of communality emerging in the shared
voices of protest of women across the country. The women who are not afraid of speaking up,
who will not be brow-beaten and shackled with the threat of violence always looming over
their heads, of women who will not be scared away to their homes by midnight.
The communality voice should create a strong feeling on women with respect so that, the lust
girl to make this enchantment through voice. Let’s raise it ‘#Ain’t No Cindrella’.

Tumblr media
First thought: Homestuck^2 should've just been called Beyond Canon, and more people should call it that.
The 2 was put on for chuckles; HS trending the day it was announced with it being a sequel spoke enough about how such a thing shant be underestimated, and why Homestuck is ABSOLUTELY more than just our small twitter crowd (and the scrap of us still on tumblr). I say that because remembering the Beyond Canon part slightly reassures me about the fact that this is a fanwork that will do some weird shit, and things I don't agree with, but isn't something that I have to subscribe to enjoying all the way with how I engage with Homestuck.
Homestuck 2 is not the canon continuation. Homestuck 2: Beyond Canon, is an OFFICIAL continuation.
Not having it on such an important stool and as the only content we all are only allowed to digest should come from both people who obsessively dislike it, and people who defensively support it. If a character says they kick babies then I can say, hey that's weird, maybe not great writing, but I can pretend they don't in my content, and i dont have to send threats or call people cishet white men for it! and, it's an absolutely great thing that we were all encouraged to create our own ideas without anyone who's influenced us to do so squinting their eyes when we actually go through with it. Glad I don't have to put this story up to the expectations of being a sequel to a 11 year, worldwide IP that's shooketh the internet landscape since it's merely optional, Death of the Author persists, and ideas aren't just dominated and revolved around the perspective of a 1% in this entire fanbase.
That said.
As an OFFICIAL continuation versus a canon one, HS2 is ok. It certainly has that fanfiction vibe, and a story it wants to tell. I can't really tell what that story is since we have like, 10 sub plots rn though. There's not a real a clear indicator on where the focus of main conflict is that connects all these stories together.
I thought that the prose in replacement of Vriska's battle was jarring, but not teeerribly surprising for the format HS2 is going for. It's more so using drawings to compliment text versus Homestuck's usual of panels being side by side with visual importance, or even itself being the one compliment. It sorta feels weird tho that it brought old fans back in with art just for them to get sneered at when they get a bit upset that there won't be main staples of art known to progress the story forward.
Also people who mock people for “having to read homestuck” knowing there’s language barriers and struggling focus from those who’ve been use to something that was never so dense, are ridiculous.
Personally this could be solved by knowing how old flashes worked, having way more artists on the team, maybe even an art director if not already, and noting that we're not asking for the next Cascade. Rome wasn't built in a day, but Rose Ride sure was, and Homestuck’s animation is absolutely not the same as a 12-24 framed 12 minute cartoon. That, or just snuff the illustrative art as a whole since it's very clear on where the focus is.
I’m sure you’re not here trying to see my opinions on how the outer workings are though, versus plot.
Uuuuh, let's see. Yiffy's still a name I don't care to use until I eventually get tired of any of my art that do not show up in tags. This is fine and not as offensive as people are saying it is. Minors who want to cosplay this character don't have to call themselves this character. Not wanting to be one letter away from accidentally entering a very NSFW space of twitter is fine. Also the lot of people call Tavros, Tavvy.
I hope Kanaya's anger at being cucked is actually seen versus being implied through fan guesses and another character having to say she was.
Roxy needs to be more of an involved character. Where are they during all this?
Jane should have a mention of her relations to HIC being a main/bad influence on her current parallels to Alternian dictatorship.
The PRE-RETCON GROUP should have a fun one-shot update for fans who like them, since they oughta be around if they fell through the ghost hole. Most of them. The sprites that aren't Jasprosesprite should also show up too, since they're around.
Aaaaaand I think we should be extra careful going into the future when it comes to the alien rebellion. It's weird that a lot of the writers are white and toy around with concepts that can be a not so great parallel to racism. Currently not great timing rn! If the characters are going to remain aracial, but with them still doing not much to reference other non-white earth cultures or getting new hair cuts that have different textures (looking at you, Rose), we shant make the species with actual biological benefits a racism commentary. the xeno joke at least had a play on words. If any writer has happened upon this then a, please don't get mad at me again haha, and b, consider having more black writers or directional assistance on your squad. You know who they are.
In the future. I casually want the ghost from the Dream Bubbles to be shown since it's a big elephant in the room to not have a single one of them in the bg despite a load of them appearing from the ghost whole. Don't gotta give them speaking lines, especially the dancestors. I personally don't know if I want that right now.
I also hope in the future that we don't get HS content that is only going to revolve around HS2, if it's optional enough to engage with without being the only option. That's why PQ could ended a bit better for me, and why I hope it's not the main thing that's keeping Hiveswap on the backburner. I don't think it's farfetched to consider that multiple HS content could come from more than just one team; to relieve work load, but to also strengthen the idea that Homestuck can be a various amount of perspectives when it comes to the ideas fans have. The most dedicated fans leading the direction of the story is not just a handful of them. If anything, at least acknowledge the massive ass fan projects going on once in awhile to showcase the different avenues.
"Hey Cro, you sure have bitched about this alot. Do you have anything good to say? Why don't you stop reading if you hate it so much!"
Not every comment needs to be golden, love. Again, some of these decisions I eck at, but ultimately they're just words on a computer that I'm not holding anyone at gun point to do, and I'm curious to see how the story handles itself going forward, since again, it's just a fanwork. Sometimes I wish to not only see where the plot goes, but to see a writer's craft in action.
Good Things:
The Art. Again, please have more artists. It'd help so much, especially since the main one is also double timing for VE. That said, HS2 sticks out to me because of the way the color composition is used. Aside from hair and other tiny things, I haven't seen black used a lot, which makes colors pop. It's really nice to look at. I hope we get more sharper styles of character in the future, since it builds on nostalgia and makes the trolls feel much less like they're from Repiton, but I can deal with it for the most part. I also like that one panel where the omega kids and vriska are talking in the dark room, and based on where they're standing, the text aligns. Tasty as hell.
Meat and Candy still do hold neat logic in the direction the stories go. Candy, while it could be more tasteless in some areas, is chaotic and too much of a good thing. Meat is having something a little more straightforward, though I'm not sure quite yet where it's going. I always found Candy to be the part of the epilogue that actually entertained me the most, from how much of a surreal Robot Chicken skit at 3am it felt. Sometimes the jokes slapped real nice and made me wonder, going in, how is this monkeys paw gonna play out and, hopefully, make people laugh or smirk like they got a good roast at themself?
The slightly episodic feel of each update is what I wanted from the Epilogues, so it's interesting to see that play out when it comes to switching different perspectives.
The bonus updates get points for featuring characters that a lot of us have been wanting to see for ages.
Hopefully this isn't unpopular, but I think the tension of Yiffy's introduction was nicely composed and written (ignoring some of the things I wish for Jane). It leaves you with enough want to see what'll happen next time. You could also say that despite her growling and making a lot of noise, it's not actually bad writing: I see it as the audience being forced to see her in the same perspective that Jane see's her; a dog. Upon no context we're seeing the same thing while knowing things are obviously off, and once we see this character in a new environment where their personality shines, it'll have a bigger impact her own character being humanized. So I like that.
Okay, I think that's all I got. I improv wrote most of this; hopefully I won't be taken out of context since I don’t think that HS2′s writing should ultimately be a judgement of the writers as people, nor treated as if they should hold the same unhealthy work environment that Andrew forced himself to do when writing the og comic. No matter if you happen to be a initial-time gamer or a person who has been gaming because the golden age, there is no denying that the business has grown. These numbers can certainly differ per study, but it does appear like the quantity of female severe gamers are on a downward trend. The final time we checked in females had been closer to 45%-48% of gamers. We can speculate as to why this is. Possibly females are much less fond of the emergence of the eSports trend. Probably females are feeling significantly less incorporated in gaming forums and on the web communities right after the harassment accusations of the last handful of years. Perhaps they're just more drawn to other entertainment industries, but this is absolutely a trend to continue watching.

Companies across the globe have been coming up with gaming devices beyond just the mice, joysticks and keyboards for years. Some are built for durability, others for added functionality and an enhanced gaming knowledge. Most of them are futuristic and sleek but all of them are for built for one purpose, to give the most effective darn gaming session hardcore gamers deserve.
Honestly, I can not even start to guess what the future holds for gaming. I'd appreciate to see VR turn out to be far more reasonably priced, and for the media to develop bored of applying videogames as a scapegoat for bar parenting or acts of intense violence. But more than that I'd like to see larger organizations back down from their many anticonsumer policies.Though we get treated to a lot of amazing games, we're also treated fairly poorly by the likes of EA and Ubisoft. Awful preorder bonuses tha tare designedto boost preorder numbers with no actual advantage to the customer, games becoming released in buggy states or with poor overall performance, and questionable microtransactions. These are just some of the issues that need to have to be solved.
Why we like it: The video gaming podcast normally focuses on indie titles, due to the fact that is what the hosts are personally interested in, but sometimes they also bring a wider selection of games to the table for discussion. Idle Thumbs is a thoughtful podcast that puts a bit additional emphasis on style and criticism when analyzing the games. If Idle Thumbs” clicks with you, you can also check out the podcast 3 Moves Ahead” about war and method games, it was made by the similar guys.
Preserve in thoughts that while a lot of ladies gamers are simply casual players, numerous extra are involved in the gaming planet beyond just choosing up a mobile game or two. Females are interested in each games and gaming influencers, and have a tendency to take suggestions from said influencers relatively seriously. In truth, they account for 30% of YouTube gaming video views alone, and the number is only expanding. In addition, 39% of female gamers appear to the advice of pals and family when thinking about a new game, so word-of-mouth is essential as properly, even if the games they are playing tend to be a lot more of a solo endeavour.

I get what you mean about interacting differently with general adult fiction and ya, but I can’t agree that ya is “less than” or that meta about ya stories is worthless
... guys honestly can... y’all... stop putting words in my mouth? who said ya is LESS THAN ADULT LITERATURE? who said meta about ya is worthless? I said that:
ya is DIFFERENT from adult lit BECAUSE IT’S NOT AIMED AT ADULTS and fyi I think writing books for kids/children/teens is a lot harder than writing adult books because you have to think extra hard about the message you’re conveying and how you’re conveying and so on, WRITING good lit for minors (let’s just call it like that) especially the kind that can also be enjoyed by other age groups is hard and I NEVER SAID IT’S LESS THAN ADULT FICTION, I SAID THAT PERSONALLY I NEVER RELATED TO IT BUT I’M GLAD IF KIDS RELATE TO BOOKS CATERED TO THEM THAT ARE GOOD FOR THEM - percy jackson wouldn’t be good for me because it’s not my thing, it was most likely good for tons of teenagers/pre-teens who read it and felt represented in it and had fun with reimagined greek myths and I personally wish rick riordan a nice long fruitful career because I know that PJ books are actually very good for that target and offer kids a lot of representation and are well-thought/planned for that age range and I’m not saying that adults can’t enjoy them, but I would find it quite useless if someone decided to ancient greek literature assuming it’s the same thing as percy jackson, like is that too hard to grasp that if I say it’s DIFFERENT and that it’s not my thing but IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE I’m not automatically saying it’s less than adult fiction? it has to be good for kids, then if it’s good for adults too GOOD but the point is that the moment it’s good for kids it doesn’t have to be for anyone else because THEY are the target and adults who assume they are the target for ya fiction are missing the mark;
‘meta about ya stories is worthless’ WHEN did I say that? when? META ABOUT YA STORIES IN GENERAL is not worthless and believe me I’d absolutely read meta about thg concerning... hmmmm.... let’s see, when I watched the first hunger games movie I was like ‘sorry but is district 12 basically the poor appalachian miners or what why isn’t anyone discussing that’, now I WENT ON WIKIPEDIA TO CHECK AND GUESS WHAT
Tumblr media
eeeh, wow, did I guess wrong? obviously not, except that I have never once read meta about this one topic, because believe me if I knew thg was about that I’d have probably watched the movies or read it back when it was out because I’m actually interested in commentary on that topic, except that each single piece of meta I see about thg is about the love triangle and so on, which excuse me but seems to me like most people discoursing on thg ignore the elephant in the house ie that there is a lot of classism/social commentary that gets ignored because it would mean discussing that issue irl and from what I gather coal miners in west virginia aren’t a hot american left topic right now, so like... I would appreciate reading meta about ya that actually deals with important topics addressing those topics and not how the love triangle is or isn’t revolutionary for the standards of love triangles, for one;
second: I said that meta about ya stuff WHERE SAID YA STUFF IS TAKEN AS THE STANDARD ADULT FICTION HAS TO MEASURE AGAINST IS USELESS because if I, tumblr user janiedean, write a book that I want adult people to read, I don’t write it thinking ‘how would a teenager take this’, I write it thinking about how would an adult take it, so if someone told me ‘in your book you gave one of the two main characters a shitty mother and you didn’t explain why she’s a shitty mother so you’re a misogynist’ (actual thing that I did in the nanowrimo novel I’ll hopefully finish soon) I’ll answer you that ‘you should grasp why his mother is a shitty mother from the circumstances they grew up in which should be enough to make you do 2+2 and since it’s from the pov of a guy whose mother was shitty to him he’s not exactly thinking about the reasons why she’d fail him because eventually to him she still was a shit mother, and if it was for teenagers at some point I’d have explained it, in an adult book I Do Not because THERE IS NO NEED FOR THAT, and if someone judged me faulty because I didn’t put two paragraphs of backstory to explain why his mom is shitty I’d say they were judging me unfairly because for that context I already gave you all the narrative elements you need to understand it and I don’t have to adhere to specific archetypes that make it easier to understand a negative character’s background when it’s that kind of figure, which means that you can’t judge grrm's writing the way you would judge rick riordan’s because they don’t write for the same audience and it’s unfair to both of them.
never, NEVER I said that I think YA is lesser or YA meta is worthless.
never.
I just said IT’S NOT THE BEGINNING AND END OF LITERATURE AND LITERATURE ANALYSIS and such a position is detrimental to both ya literature that gets held to crazy standards and adult literature that is assumed to cater to an audience it doesn’t cater to.
now can you all please for the love of whichever deity you worship or don’t stop putting words into my mouth and stop thinking that if I, a random person on the internet who at fourteen related harder to the main pov kid in the body than to any other character she had related to until then because that was the kind of stuff that made me feel seen and not ya lit but who never ever once presumed that ya lit couldn’t be good for people who felt seen because of it and actually spent her teenage years pretending to not dislike it as much as possible because I didn’t think telling my irl friends that I thought hp was not that great was going to accomplish anything except making me look like na ass, expresses one single opinion on the topic that doesn’t even include the words ‘ya sucks’ or ‘people who read ya have no taste’ IN GENERAL, then she means your tastes suck?
because that’s the message I’m getting and this discourse is honestly becoming tiring as hell and I’m done with explaining myself fifteen times over when it feels like you are all feeling personally called into it when I was discussing a specific category of people which, if you get my point, you don’t belong to.
thank you.

VIDEO DIDN’T KILL THE RADIO STAR...
VIDEO DIDN’T KILL THE RADIO STAR it just made him dress nicer
By Pat Mellon
Speaking of your brand evolving, PODCASTS are now a wise bullet to have in the arsenal of promotional weapons. In the early 2000's, for instance, you didn't have the option to record and distribute a PODCAST. The technology didn't exist to even IDENTIFY, much less create one- if you typed PODCAST into an email in 2002, it would have been flagged as a misspelling.
But now, thanks to Audioblogging, re-branded as PODCASTING thanks to the iPOD, you can reach a targeted captive audience in a car on a long commute, with content that they've actually sought out. It's essentially a radio infomercial for the lifestyle of your product, without the PAID-PROGRAMMING aftertaste. Plenty of people have been slow to warm to the idea of such self-promotion and have waited to see if the technology and its effectiveness sustained or if it waned, the way QR codes did, or video discs did until the invention of the DVD. It can be an amazingly powerful part of your brand.
Many rejected podcasting, as I did initially, as a waste of energy. In fairness, early on when there were no networks for podcasting and its business model was less focused than now, it smacked of self-congratulatory volunteer work. I saw it as an infringement on my profession. I have 15 years of radio hosting experience. I saw podcasts as competition. In my short-sighted view then, I didn't see the full potential of a podcast. I just saw it as people wanting my job. But as time went on, I began to see the ways, at least in terms of in-car entertainment, that podcasting was the future. And like the cryptic fortune cookie says, "Kill Your Darlings". Or maybe go with the less-confusing, "Reinvent Your Business Constantly. The End Goal May Be The Same But The Tools and Methods Evolve Constantly" which is a Ken Tucker quote I saw on a Snapple Cap. Or even the more direct, "You Have To Reinvent To Stay Fresh and In The Game" which Madonna said once.
But early on, I saw it as the enemy - the way news journalists must have felt when FREELANCERS started getting a lot of the work in the late 90's. I thought, "If all you need to broadcast is a computer and an opinion, why the hell did I major in Broadcasting? It's like everyone becoming a Youtuber or a Social Media Influencer (seriously, that is NOT a good name. It's just saying what you're doing. It lacks creativity, like naming the glass thing you drink out of a "glass". Or the room with the bed a "bedroom". Or the thing you swing on a "swing". Or the... Sorry-I'll move on.) Anybody can become a Social Media Influencer these days, (and if they're under 14 and haven't been trying for half their lives then you might want to make sure they're breathing) and that means fame, sometimes money, but more important: LIKES. I overheard my 8 year-old playing with her friends and they were pretending there was a genie or something granting wishes and one girl asked for a pony, and another asked for a house of chocolate, and my daughter asked for a million LIKES on her video. LIKES are currency for pre-teen popularity. And LIKES or even merely PAGE VIEWS can be currency in the grown-up world of business. My point is that anyone with a computer and a camera can make money on Youtube if they hustle. It's simply the new normal. It's great, if not dangerous. We've yet to see the fallout of a generation raised on Youtubing, unless, of course, you count cautionary tales like Logan Paul or Jo Jo Siwa, both of whom are rich. It's simply another entertainment option for kids. I kinda thought podcasting was that, but for adults who only wanted quasi-fame; to show-off. But it's bigger than that.
If you're a plumber, for instance, and you want to maximize business, you probably want a decent social media footprint, some solid YELP reviews, and maybe even a podcast. Toilet clogged? Click here for an interview with master plumbers from all over. It's not the ONLY thing you should do. It's ONE of the things you should do.
On the consumer side, you have to realize that traffic, especially the bumper-to-bumper kind, is GOLD to a radio talk show host. People listen the most in their cars, so DJ's in New York and Los Angeles, the #1 and #2 radio markets depending on who you ask*, for instance, who entertain on the radio, are always on their toes to stay funny and relevant because it's so easy to push a button and change the station.
Then suddenly there was a new game in town. People were bypassing the radio altogether and plugging external sources into car sound systems, removing the commercials and unwanted Morning Zoo shenanigans, and rendering my entire college education and training void. My only hope was wishing death to the podcast movement, which I think I did a couple of times on the radio accompanied by a sound effect of a toilet flushing (Take THAT, Podcasting!). It didn't work. I kept hearing the word. Podcast. (eerie voice) PODD CAAAST! My head was in the sand. People would say to me, "you should do a podcast" and I'd cringe and wildly swing fists at imaginary ghosts who were accusing me of "Resting on your laurels" and "Holding on too tight.”
It took a while, but I get the appeal and, more importantly, the power of the Podcast. It's like a book-on-tape for the 21st century- 10 times as cool, though, because it's technologically relevant, and can be different every time you listen. So we agree that podcasts are real. And we acknowledge that there is room for many things on the dashboard of a car, be them outlets, or additional buttons. And we agree that the the way we do business is always changing and we have to adapt to some degree. So why all the hub bub? Because we can't have an intelligent conversation about the delicate existence of Podcasts without talking about Shane Gillis, the comedian who was hired and fired by Saturday Night Live in the same week last year. We need to understand the power of what it was that torpedoed his streetcar (tune into Mixed Metaphors with Pat Mellon Tuesdays on The Podd Couple, right after Poddamnit at 8, and Pod of Thunder with Gene Simmons at 8:17) He and a buddy do this show, this podcast, it's like a radio show but you don't listen to it on your grandpa's Victrola, you tether your MP3 player to the radio inside grandpa's Camry, and there's bad language, which there never is on traditional, boring old dumb talk radio, so right away, it's awesome (honestly, the only difference between Howard Stern on radio and Howard Stern on satellite is the F word) and the internet allows curses and take that, Mr. Suit and Tie, and this is going to be amazing. And on one particular show from 2018, Gillis said "chink" when describing someone in Chinatown. Not a huge scandal, but I guess you'd have to ask Roseanne Barr if the internet can get you into to any kind of trouble. She was exiled from the the entire US for a social media post that mentioned race and monkeys. And the same new normal that allows John Q. Anybody to do a podcast ALSO watches everything you do online and will sink you if it sees something it does not like. America can be confusing that way. Freedom of speech and freedom of complaining about freedom of speech are always at each other's throats, it seems. And you can't have it both ways. The guy who alerted the world to Bill Cosby's dating rituals online is loved by many but is also shunned by others, but that guy knows what he did and he knows not to complain about the ones who, well, complain. It's the price you pay.
The point is, you need to constantly be hustling and using all of technology’s modern tools to get your product out (they’re not burning DVD’s anymore) and maybe one of those avenues is a podcast with salty language, and maybe that podcast exists among your body of work that clients can enjoy whenever they want.
But we live in a new age of retroactive outrage. Eddie Murphy was on SNL and is arguably the most talented person the show has produced. He did a stand-up special in which he explores “What if Mr. T were a Faggot?” It was inflammatory and it was insensitive and it was homophobic (though that buzzword was still a decade from conception) because the premise of the joke- the attribution of homosexual behavior to a big, strong, black man being marginalized as solely predatory sodomy - crossed the line. When I spell it out like that it looks horrible. But it’s a simple comedic device: assigning unlikely behavior to someone for comedic purposes. It’s the fish-out-of-water gag. It’s why we had Mork, and Alf, and Balkie from Perfect Strangers. It’s Freaky Friday. It’s why The Rock playing a babysitter or a tooth fairy is funny. Murphy did this AFTER he was on SNL. But if has been released before he auditioned, do you think he’d have been hired?
Of course he would have. Because the Mr. T thing was a small part of that special (though, I recall, an extremely quotable part) and the people who didn’t like or appreciate the language didn’t have the bionic megaphone of the internet so they could get their outrage all over your conscience. The point is that your podcast is a reflection of your brand. You have to weigh your desire to speak freely and loosely with your desire to keep the Cancel Culture at bay. At a MINIMUM, though, you should keep things clean for your clients, listeners, and most importantly, your potential customers. Shane Gillis missed out of being on SNL and fame, instead on infamy because he broke one of society's biggest rules:he said something controversial out loud. Granted, it was in bad taste, but if that were a crime half of us would be in jail. It's just important to remember that your language on a work-based podcast should be professional, which I realize cannot be defined easily, but maybe stay away from slang and cursing. Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

opinion on the term bl?
uhhhhhh…very complicated. I might have written a whole rant post before on the topic on this blog on an empty stomach so it was most likely not very nuanced (I think it was about people saying that The Untamed didn’t count as BL).
buckle in, this got suuuper long
tbh i first came into contact with the term in the early 2000s and since the internet didn’t play any role at my age then, the only context I had were magazines (here in Europe) and manga publications.
I knew that BL was a whole genre in Manga and that it featured gay romance and that fans / content creators would refer to themselves at fujoshi. Now, at that time I was only figuring out that I was bi, didn’t know any Japanese and didn’t have any friends with cultural ties to Japan.
So based on the magazines I read, I started to believe that “Fujoshi” literally meant “Rotten Girl” because of the taboo of same-sex relationships and the tantalizing sense of the forbidden that comes with it.
While I read some BL manga (couldn’t tell you the titles anymore), I never referred to myself as a Fujoshi or being into BL because both terms seemed to apply only to Japanese people and the sense of “the forbidden” in regards to same-sex relationships didn’t fit to my reality (having been to a same-sex marriage with my family at age 8 etc) and also felt demeaning to me.
After learning Japanese and living in Japan I didn’t really question my aversion to the terms, since I did have access to the internet now but didn’t think of fact-checking everything I had “learned” pre-internet (I think it is important to note here that the magazines weren’t the highest in quality in terms of journalistic prowess nor scientific in any way. They were just short entertaining articles, aimed at teenagers like me, trying to profit from the still ongoing wave of japanese pop culture in the west) and my only experience with both bl content and real life fujoshi wasn’t that positive:
My feelings on BL and fujoshi culture were heavily influenced by
- the wave of very sad and traumatizing gay movies in Japan that most of the time ended in double suicides of the main characters
- rape storylines getting romanticized in manga
- pretty heavily stereotyped gay characters in main stream tv series that were only there for comedic relief
- the Fujoshi I knew back then being weirded out by the thought of same-sex relationships between women and basing their thought on gay men solely on the content they consumed
- not finding the hailed “subversion of traditional gender roles” or discussion thereof in the BL my friends consumed.
- my gay friends in japan having very frustrating encounters with fujoshi who started to treat them like an open air circus and not making them feel supported in real life
- people around me making judgments based on attractiveness on whether gay people should get supported, while the hint of a celebrity being gay was weaponized  against them
now, this pretty much sums up, why I tended to have negative thoughts on the subject and felt more sympathetic to the push from some people in the queer community in japan to please retire terms like “uke” and “seme” when talking about real people.
since then, i didn’t intervene when other female friends in japan would use the term for themselves, because it still was a term coined in japan and those people were actually supportive of queer people so i didn’t see how me being preachy about it just because of my experience and not calling myself a fujoshi or fan of bl would be of any help and/or called for.
jump to 2018/2019 and i started to read more papers about it on a whim because i started to watch Crossing The Line and for the first time in a long while I was in a fandom again where people called the genre “BL” and themselves fujoshi/fudanshi.
I came to know that what I assumed the origin story of the term “Fujoshi” to be had been misreported (shocker) by the magazines back in my youth and that apparently the term was also widely used in Thailand, Taiwan and Mainland China. especially the knowledge that apparently TERFs were behind a pushback of the term made me reevaluate my opinion.
Since I have really no insight into Chinese or Thai culture it is not on me to judge whether it is appropriate for people there to use BL as a genre signifier etc and from all I have read, in some cases it is really about finding a way of creating and distributing queer content in a place that is not lgbtqi+ friendly or use it as means of finding expressions for one’s own sexuality etc.
Obv. there are genre conventions I will get annoyed about and criticize (all female characters are evil etc) but those things are also not BL exclusive so there’s not much sense in condemning a whole genre that at least tries to push some conventions.
With the Internet and a global push for more lgbtqi+ rights there is now definitely a strong symbiotic relationship between queer content and real life social changes. so being harder on queer content (in general) because it isn’t perfect doesn’t make anything better for queer people.
nowadays there has been some wonderful content in japan with a push for real life legal changes as well, taiwan has the marriage for all and thailand is also pushing for a civil union for everyone.
especially in the case of mainland china with strict censorship rules i will congratulate anyone who tries to sneak some ambiguity in. it saddens me that the rules are as strict and that there are even more hardships for lgbtqi+ people in real life but i would never say that not creating any content that could be interpreted as queer should be favoured over trying to do something, regardless of how lacking the result might seem.
The reason why I ranted about BL as a genre term recently was mostly directed at western fans with no cultural ties to any of the aforementioned cultures, but i definitely didn’t stress that enough in my previous post.
Since I still don’t call myself a fujoshi or being into the BL genre I am suspicious of western fans calling themselves as such. because i project my own experience and knowledge on them and there are people out there who definitely emphasize the cheeky “rotten” side of themselves while not knowing (like past me) where the term comes from and that it does’t have to do with any “forbidden fruit”. i assume a certain laziness when straight people will try and convince me that they are allies to me, because they consume BL series, but will still call me “the man” in the relationship etc.
There can definitely be a need for a similar outlet that allows people to write about gender roles, sexualities etc in a similar way but very often the argument of “it is female empowerment to be into BL” is just warping the origin story of the term into an excuse for homophobic statements. I see the term get applied to western shows as well (when there isn’t a need for using a Japanese term, especially not when there’s a missing understanding of its origin) and actual mlm shows in asia being dismissed just because it doesn’t fit the BL genre conventions (point and example: people in the west discounting The Untamed as mlm content because they weren’t explicit about it; What Did You Eat Yesterday getting dismissed because of similar reasons and the diversion from presumed age and beauty standards of BL as a genre). That way western fans made BL feel quite restrictive and not interchangeable with mlm anymore, which just confounds me.
in the end it also comes down to scope: someone writing fanfiction, producing small indie series cannot really be harmful even when they content might seem so. so regardless of what the genre entails it is important to put everything in perspective and whether this is the hill someone wants to die on, instead of leaving space for artistic expression, cultural differences and celebrating the steps into a more loving world for all.
tl;dr: I feel many emotions; there’s always space to learn more and I am grateful to everyone who made posts about the racism in criticizing the terms “Fujoshi” / “BL”; I don’t use the term myself, but only feel wary when westerners use it; personally I prefer to use mlm or wlw as content describers but I am also not 100% satisfied with that as well

Repost from facebook, in case anyone cares about Canadian sports TV
I usually try to take one or two days to think about a hot-button issue and avoid making kneejerk emotional reaction statements in response to it, so a little late to the party: Don Cherry, eh?
There's a lot to talk about here. I'm not going to tell you whether or not he deserved to get fired, because frankly I don't work for Sportsnet or have any first-hand exposure to anything he may have said in the past that led up to this decision. I can't tell you if it was this comment in particular that sent his employers from 0 to 100, or if it was just the latest in a series of flack-catching events that they're tired of doing damage control. I don't particularly care either way, that matter is between him and his former employer. I will tell you, however, that the Government of Canada was not involved in this decision, and his firing was not a violation of his (albeit limited by Canadian laws) freedom of expression, as a television network is well within their rights to dismiss a representative who is delivering content to viewers that is incongruous with what the network wants delivered on their behalf. Moving on.
I have seen some people argue that Cherry was addressing everyone in Canada, and not only immigrants, so since apparently some short-term memories are not so great, I took the liberty of transcribing his comments:
"...Downtown Toronto, forget it! Downtown Toronto, no poppy... How bout [running?] it for the people that buy them? Now you go to the small cities, and you know... you know, those p--... the [rows and rows?] ... You people love, you that you come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys pay for your way of life that you enjoy in canada, these guys paid the biggest price..."
So, if you only heard every word past "you love our way of life", then I could understand the opinion that he was addressing all Canadians. But that isn't what he said, he used the words "you people ... you come here". Where is "here"? There were three places listed in this rant:
-small cities
-downtown Toronto
-Canada
He's clearly not talking about small cities, since he implies that poppies are everywhere in small cities.
Is he talking about downtown Toronto or Canada? In that case, who "comes here"? It's not Canadian citizens from downtown Toronto (since they did not "come to" a place they were already living), it's not Canadian citizens from outside downtown Toronto (since as mentioned, those people tend to wear poppies proudly in large numbers), so who's left? You already know the answer, it's immigrants.
So, some of you may now be wondering, "so what, what's wrong with that? Should people who move here not be expected to respect our military?" I would say, sure, if moving to another country means adopting some of their ways of life, and you believe patriotism in support of donating to the Legion falls under that, you could make that argument. But why single out immigrants to Canada, when just a few seconds ago people agreeing with him were entirely convinced he was addressing all Canadians? What purpose does it serve to single out immigrants?
Furthermore: why are we pointing fingers at new arrivals to Canada to blame for a decline in poppy sales? Full disclosure: I did not buy a poppy this year. That wasn't on purpose. The part of town I work in has been plagued with construction reducing major arterials to a single lane, so lately I've been resorting to "creative" suburban bus routes to get home.
Did you know that the Legion maintains a list (https://legion.ca/remembrance/the-poppy-campaign) of places where you can get a poppy? I didn't, and I also have not been passing by the listed businesses on my way home lately. It didn't enter my mind, as pretty much the only way I really remember what time of year it is on a day-to-day basis is "is my rent due today?" and "is there snow on the ground?" and I did not enter any of these businesses for any reason as of late, and just forgot to get one. There are countless other adults like me -- what changed over the years?
Compare Remembrance Day to other national days of importance like New Year's. Everyone knows when New Year's is coming up, because its presence is ubiquitous. Everyone talks about their plans, their resolutions, their parties. Remembrance Day is much less culturally ubiquitous in the days before it, meaning there are less frequent "oh yeah, I should do something" reminders entering your field of vision. 15-20 years ago, I would see commercials on TV frequently, and that was a good reminder. Today, I don't subscribe to any cable or streaming services, and I browse the internet with an ad blocker. A lowered frequency of passive reminders is a real factor in your day-to-day decision-making, and perhaps there's room for people much more knowledgeable about marketing than I am to discuss targeting demographics who weaned off TV in the information age. That's not for me to propose any solutions to, just pointing out a cultural source of decline that isn't pre-existing bias against immigrants.
Going back to the immigrants point -- not only is it creating a scapegoat, but it's also just plain wrong. "World War I" and "World War II" are aptly named, check out this table: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties#Human_losses_by_country
World War II killed military members from literally all over the world. Indonesia, Brazil, Iraq, Ethiopia, China, India, Thailand, just to name a couple. Countries like Mexico who suffered no military losses also suffered civilian losses. World War II ended over 70 years ago, but generationally, 70 years is not a long time. Children growing up without their parents and siblings lost to war, they have to live with that forever. Survivors living with PTSD, that is a condition that affects your entire life and those around you. Economically, that much loss in life and prosperity affects the entire world, and always hits the poorest the hardest. The effects of war on a person and their family last for generations, and this is true around the world. People immigrating to Canada, statistically, are probably already well acquainted with this fact first-hand. They do not need to be lectured on the importance of military service any more than a born Canadian citizen does, chances are they already know.
World War II also ended, like I said, a very long time ago, but as we are all already aware, it certainly wasn't the last military effort Canada participated in. While we honour the sacrifices made by veterans in wartime, the CAF and the Legion still need funding for things like supporting veterans living with PTSD (https://www.legion.ca/support-for-veterans/mental-health-ptsd), such as services like the Family Information Line (https://www.cafconnection.ca/National/Stay-Connected/Family-Information-Line/Connect-With-Us.aspx). If you didn't know those services existed, what separates you from a new immigrant who also didn't know about them?
There is a separate discussion to be had by people much more knowledgeable than me about the morality of the CAF intervening in some foreign regions or being involved with cracking down on illegal marijuana, but that's a discussion I won't open up here and am not confident in discussing. However, some of the existing services offered to veterans that are funded in part by poppy sales are what I would consider altruistic and good to know about no matter how long you've lived in Canada, especially if you know somebody who served in wartime.
So how does all of this relate to Don Cherry? Ultimately, it's disappointing that he chose to single out immigrants in this way, when immigrants have no less understanding than born Canadian citizens about what exactly wartime sacrifice means. Interestingly, I was browsing some discussions about this yesterday, and came across some comments from people who do not understand a word of Punjabi, but enjoy watching the Punjabi broadcasting of Hockey Night In Canada because of the genuine unbridled enthusiasm of the commentators for the game. A broadcast program like that exists to do an example of exactly what Cherry and his supporters are critical of "immigrants" for supposedly -not- doing, and that's integrating with and participating in Canadian culture. There is no widespread attitude from new arrivals to Canada to reject Canadian values and culture. Nobody goes to a new country with the intention of having nothing to do with the country around them, that's a miserable way to live and is not something anyone wants to do by choice.* Look at Sweden, the vast majority of people learning Swedish on Duolingo are refugees living in Sweden. His comments were unfairly targeting certain Canadians in a way that singles them out as "others", and that's really unfair for them to have to hear coming from someone who is a Canadian cultural icon commentating a game that countless people from all walks of life, from any part of the world, take great joy in watching as part of being in Canada. All he had to do was apologize, and he didn't, and that's really unfortunate and has made a lot of Canadians who grew up with him as a household name very sad.
* (This is not even getting into the unspeakably horrific sacrifices imposed on our Indigenous populations, which make the whole judgmental comments about "immigrants" an entirely different and gross flavour of ironic.)
It's even worse that it comes at a time of heightened political "us vs them" tensions. We don't need more of that. The line between left and right is getting wider and wider every day. You can even see a visual representation of this courtesy of our neighbours to the South in this video: https://youtu.be/tEczkhfLwqM -- not that you need to, really, just look at our election 3 weeks ago where suddenly a bunch of provinces threatened to leave the country because they didn't get their way. (Speaking of, the election was three weeks ago, holy. Your negative comments about immigrants in the wake of Don Cherry's firing contrasted with your faux-concern about Trudeau's racist makeup has been duly noted. Maybe note that Trudeau's damnable actions happened 20 years ago, aka what some of you consider to be "the good old days" when people were "not so easily offended", as in, a time when Cherry likely would not have been fired for his comments, like Trudeau wasn't fired for his racist makeup. Think about that for a second before sharing that nonsense meme.)
Cherry's words and a refusal to think outside the box or apologize to Canadians just trying to live in Canada and enjoy a hockey game were ultimately promoting political tensions that don't need any further promotion, and that's unfortunate. Ultimately, whether you were born in Canada or not, both you and your neighbours just want to provide the best life you can for yourselves and your loved ones, and some of you actively chose Canada as the best option to achieve that goal in. And that's a pretty special thing to reflect on and unite over in the face of tension and division.

Pls explain more abt the ancient history thing b I’m very interested
Hello anon!
I know this was sent in months ago and I should have replied to it then but I’m a master procrastinator and life has been strange (before coronavirus kicked off I was in the middle of preparing for exams). Anyway, I’m happy to answer this.
I made a post in the distant past, basically saying that I think there is a view that history before 1800 is somehow less intellectual and that this is rooted in sexism. That post is here. Allow me to explain and please bare in mind that this is all just my opinion and is based off my experiences.
Apologies for the length.
Firstly, I love history. I’m a complete geek for it. I think it’s important, interesting and with a bit of luck I’ll be studying it at university soon. Therefore, this isn’t a post where I try to claim that actually history before 1800 is superior... because that’s just dumb. History is history and while historians can have personal preferences over which period they find most interesting, that doesn’t make that period “better” than any others. Literally. I mean, everything leading up to the present day didn’t happen in isolated, distinct boxes and all of it is useful to understanding how modern society has developed.
It makes sense that there is a general interest in “modern history”. After all, it is interesting and we have more information about it thanks to technological developments. The 20th century was a time of massive change if you compare 1900 to 2000 - although, I’m sure it’s easy for us to see the difference, seeing as the 20th century wasn’t so long ago in the grand scheme of things and many people who are alive today lived through a part of it. I’m sure people living in the early part of any century probably thought (if they had access to history) that the start and end of the previous century were hugely different. Nevertheless, I agree that the 20th century is quite profound in this respect, at least at the moment. In 100 years, who knows?
The 19th century also offers us a lot more remnants than its predecessors and I think culturally is still viewed as important. Some people have a rose tinted view of the 19th century. In Britain, I’d say it is seen by those of a certain political persuasion (check out Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg) as a time of peak Britishness(TM) and nationalistic pride... although that narrative is simplistic and disregards the suffering of the colonies and indeed the working classes of Britain, who had to prop up all this “greatness”. Anyway, I’m sure if you found a stuffy 19th century bloke, he would tell you how his society’s morality has gone to complete shambles and that he yearns for a bygone era that only really exists in his mind. I guess that’s just what some people always do. Conservatives, eh?
I’ll actually get to the point now.
At my college, there were two history courses available: modern (involving subjects such as the Russian Revolution and Britain from about 1950-2007) and pre-modern (involving subjects such as the crusades and the English Reformation). I took the latter course and was in a class of 18, where there were 13 girls and 5 boys. Generally, the modern history classes were weighted in the opposite way, which simply suggests that at my particular college with my particular year group, boys had a preference for modern history and girls for pre-modern. I would argue that this preference appears to be more widespread in general, but that’s not definite.
The fact that this difference existed is not the problem. The problem is what people perceived this difference to mean.
I was told by a boy (not a nice boy, so not a representation of everyone) who was studying history that the course I was taking was “the gay version”. That, of course, is a puerile insult for 2020 and highlights his maturity level - all history is very, very gay and if you take issue with that then I don’t know what to tell you. Get your head out of your arse, maybe? But anyway... why did he feel superior about studying a different bit of history?
It wasn’t just him. A (male) teacher once told me that the history course I had chosen wasn’t as useful as the other one and that the only use it had was that I could apply transferable essay writing skills to my other subjects. Which was bollocks, might I add. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t a history teacher.
So, where were these views coming from? Why was the English Reformation - which was basically 16th century Brexit - seen as lesser than the Russian Revolution? The obvious argument one could make is that events that have happened more recently are more important and have more of an impact today. However, without the events of the years before them, would these events have happened either? Does the Church of England not still exist? Do we not have a statue of Richard the Lionheart in Westminster (because we like giving statues to tossers, apparently)?
In my opinion, the answer to this odd hierarchy of time periods lies in gender socialisation and the propensity of people to view history in the same way they view fiction. We know that the traditional male/female gender socialisation patterns are different: boys are socialised to be “tough”, “leaders”, “aggressive” etc. whilst girls are socialised to be “submissive”, “friendly”, “polite” etc. This is hopefully changing now but inbuilt, subconscious biases about the genders and what quantifies masculinity and femininity are still around. There is the stereotype of boys being interested in war due to the toys they were given to play with. Surprise, surprise - warfare in the 20th century alone was vastly different to anything that had come before it and, as I said, due to technology we have more archived about it. I’m not suggesting that only boys are interested in historical war - again, that’s a stereotype. Anyone can be interested in war, 20th century or otherwise. Despite this, I’m not going to pretend there still aren’t those guys who get waaaay into warfare and that their interest and knowledge in history is largely confined to that subject.
And that’s fine! You know, as long as you don’t start worshipping Hitler or anything equally creepy. People aren’t experts on every little bit of history and are allowed to have stereotypical interests.
Yet, that still doesn’t explain completely why “modern history” is viewed as more intellectual, just because maybe it appeals slightly more to men (apart from the obvious that anything men like is viewed as superior in some way).
As historical societies are notably different to our own - especially on the surface - and because there is so much historical fiction that seeks to romanticise it, it is not massively surprising that many people do see history as an extension to fiction. It’s gone, we live in the now, lots of people don’t even believe history matters. The fantasy genre has a habit of adopting historical (often medieval) settings for its tales. It’s an obvious example but Game of Thrones was a retelling of the Wars of the Roses, amongst other things. I think when fantasy is applied to history it makes it seem even less real than it may already and this can lead to it being taken less seriously (though please do watch Horrible Histories or Blackadder and take the piss out of all time periods because humans of every age have been fallible). Of course, it is far easier to romanticise and play around with times that are further from our own because they are further detached and therefore more fantastical. This plays into post-1800 being seen as more “real” and “intellectual”.
Some men who wish to keep women out of the historical circle accuse them of only being interested in history because of “romance” or “fancy dresses” - princesses and knights and fairytales. This is more a low down problem with internet trolls than actual, published historians but the issue still stands. If you view “pre-modern” history through this veil of fiction then it must seem rather childish compared to the stark brutality of the World Wars and the political rise of the New Right in the West. However, conversely, it could also be argued that the nationalism and legend attached to recent warfare makes it equally comparable to a story. Not a happy story but then, Game of Thrones isn’t a happy story either.
I don’t think anyone serious about history actually believes that the romantic, fantastical elements attached to any historical periods are 100% true. Hopefully, most people don’t see them as proof that being interested in a certain period makes you better than someone who is interested in another period. Any period can be romanticised, including the “modern” one - Titanic, anyone? Not to mention the frilly view we have of the Victorians (although that’s not silly because of the Britishness(TM), remember). Actually, using history in fiction and even making fiction about history isn’t even a bad thing and I certainly encourage it. I just think that the truth shouldn’t be conveniently forgotten by those with weird superiority complexes who think that because The Tudors was all about love trysts and fine clothing, the entire period is “girly” and a write off.
What am I saying amongst this rambling mess? The next time you see a girl going through her Ancient Egypt phase, don’t roll your eyes. Not if you wouldn’t do the same when you see a boy with an interest in WW2 tanks. Whichever way people come to their interest in the past is valid (apart from the creepy fascist worshipping I mentioned). A lot of things in our world are gendered when they shouldn’t be; history should be equally open to all and although there is a focus on the past 200 years (just look at the uni modules on offer), that doesn’t mean that if you are interested in the years before, your interest isn’t valid enough.
I hope I’ve managed to explain myself properly and have gotten through how gender plays into this sufficiently. I know this is a very niche thing to have an opinion on and I’d like to stress again that this is just my opinion and you are free to disagree with me. That said, if you send me hate then don’t expect a proper response.
Thanks for the ask!

War Games & Unpopular Opinions
There is a relatively new phenomena in games that confuses and at times, outright enrages me. These games are based off a previous games that mostly predated the internet. These pre internet games had a few options that these web only games don’t have and I wish they’d bring back.
A little history, my father always insisted that knowing computers was important. So, I’ve been around them from a very early age. I don’t remember the age he bought SimFarm, but I do remember that for a while, unlike its counterpart SimCity, it was my favorite game. You got to build things and earn money! (There is some sort of research out there that explains why humans like numbers increasing so much, it is why idle games are popular.) As I grew up, I got into the city building games of Caesar (over Civilization) and I don’t remember exactly what happened, if I saved my allowance or if it was a gift (I think I saved for it) but I eventually got the Star Craft battle chest. And when I went to college, I was the girl who got invited to the LAN parties in the computer lab or over the computer network as my friends and I duked it out over Star Craft, War Craft and Command & Conquer: Red Alert.
Not that I was very good at this mind you. You see, I would get in my corner and gather resources and research SCIENCE and hunker down behind my bunkers and tanks instead of ruthlessly building miner dudes, finding more resources, building more miner dudes and building lots of flamethrower units. “Flamin’!” This barricade strategy tended to work pretty well, if no one found me. See, to attack others wasn’t ever the reason I played the game. I wanted to research SCIENCE, watch my resources increase, and take out zerglings. Like I said, not exactly the best when it came to LAN wars.
Fast forward to the future, these types of games are still rather popular and to make matters interesting, they’ve made them “free” to play. The way they make money off these games is that you can use real world money to buy perks and resources. You can register at games like Dragons of Atlantis, Nords: Heroes of the North, Forge of Empires and I lose track of the names and gather resources, research science, increase the size of your village and troops, take on the computer AI enemy and… oh… go raid every other player around you no matter what level they are and take their resources.
This is when I rage. I like these types of games. There is a computer controlled enemy for everyone to fight. There are systems in place so different players of different levels have different resource abilities and troop quotas. In a lot of these games there are special types of units you can build and research, Dragons of Atlantis for example, has dragons. There is nothing more infuriating than logging off the game to go to bed and coming back in the morning to find your city raided by a person who is three times your level and has min maxed the system and you wouldn’t have been able to fend off anyways and now you’re out of resources because instead of coming once and leaving you be when they realized you were off for the night, they came again and again and again, until there was nothing left.
This folks is called bullying.
I don’t care if you call it a “war game.” When someone repeatedly attacks another player who is lower than their level and literally can’t defend themselves from attack, this is bullying. There is absolutely no call for it. I’m not talking about a level five attacking a level four here. That’s fine. They’re probably on close to level footing. I’m talking about a level fifteen coming in and attacking a level two player.
When you don’t have systems in place to keep lower level players from being attacked by higher level players there is an incredible imbalance in the system and means you are going to lose more and more players and potential players as word gets around that the game system is toxic. These games are not self-sustaining. The only ones who get ahead in these games are the ones who hear about a new game coming out early, get in on it and build up their resources and troops fast enough that they become the new bullies. There were hundreds of cities, hundreds of them on the maps that never changed beyond level 2 because higher level players would repeatedly come in, wipe their troops out, take their resources and that player would abandon the game.
The developers of these games seem to get this, because these games they clone over and over giving them different skins but essentially the exact same mechanics. When instead of cloning them, if they’d put the proper systems and level guards in the first place, they’d have a lot more players who would be willing to pay them money to sustain the game. Instead, they have a system that is easily abused.
Look, war games can be fun. Remember what I said about LAN games. I wasn’t great at them, but I was having fun with my friends. The thing about LAN games was the player had the option of play with others and you all started out with the same things for the same amount of time. On these new ‘war games’ sure, you have an option, your option is to either play them or not play them. There is no way for you to sit in a corner or on a Player Versus Environment server and play out the story against the computer controlled villain if you want to. You have no choice but to set up your city and prepare to be attacked at every turn. Taking this option away, takes away potential players from kids as young as I was when I first started playing SimFarm, to adults who just want to relax and not worry about being beat up by other players.
Hey, I want to just raise baby dragons and find their armor and maybe get a bunch of minotaurs to defend my city! No. I don’t want to play Farmville. I want to raise dragons. (What part of this is so hard to understand? Why is there this divide? Why do the ‘war game’ bullying kids get the cool stuff? Give me a farm game with dragons, damn it!)
And the way these games are advertised, such as Dragons of Atlantis or Nords, especially Nords, it is not inherently obvious when your first get into them, that they are player versus player based rather than player versus environment based. I shouldn’t have to dig into the forum and ‘about the game’ to figure out that this is not really player versus the computer, but player versus player. This is wrong.
My confusion sets in because I cannot for the life of me figure out how some of these games are still going and why the people who continue to play them, like them. The attitude I have received when, as a concerned player who is a potential source of income, have pointed this out in the terms of “could we make this more strategic, please aka level attack brackets or PvE maps” is mind boggling. You’d think I’m taking away their candy and telling them to go to bed. How is raiding anyone who can’t defend themselves against you in any way fun? If it is a strategy “war” game, then bully raiding isn’t really a strategy at all! Just the path with the course of least resistance. It is like these games just bring out the worst in some people.
I back away slowly.
Calling me a wimp and saying I don’t understand the point of the game, doesn’t change the facts. Bullying is wrong. These games are toxic. The internet doesn’t give anybody the right to be an asshole. These type of “Free” games have lost me as a player.
No matter much I want to raise dragons!

So I have been summoned by @alittledizzy to kind of do my take on the 2012 Dan discussion. First of all, I would highly recommend reading her posts on the subject first because Mandy really does do an excellent job of breaking down that time!
Alright, so we all know deal with pre 2014 Dan and his tendency to be, for lack of a better term, a dick. It was the rise of no homo Howell (hate that term), the customer service blog, and that god awful “hot women cold beers” shirt. It seemed that he was desperately seeking to get away from the image he had created and wanted validation from straight “bros” who found him funny and definitely not in a relationship with his roommate.  So let’s dive into the psychology of young Daniel. DISCLAIMER: I am in no way diagnosing him or stating any of this as fact. This is just a general synopsis of a specific time in a person’s psychosocial development. I don’t think he was or is a bad person. He was a teenager who was vastly unprepared to have thousands of eyes judging his every move when he wasn’t even done figuring himself out.
Erikson’s 5th stage of psychosocial development, “Identity vs. Role Confusion” is when young people are hyper focused on finding out who they are and try on different labels/personalities/opinions to see what feels right. Generally this stage ends at roughly age 18-19; however, studies show that LGBTQ+ teens may take longer to successfully progress through this stage due to an important part of their identity being invalidated by others or that they may struggle finding the right “label” (fuck heteronormativity). If you look at 2009 Dan, he could publicly call himself bi and talk about attractive men while having the semi-anonymity of the internet. He could see how it felt saying these things without fear of personal rejection. Once he blew up on the internet, that was taken away and everything he said was under a microscope. Young people need a safe space to explore who they are without that fear; Dan’s safety net was taken away before he completed this stage.
It seems like he was desperately seeking validation from “edgy white guys” who said awful things as a form of entertainment. We all know about Dan’s history with school bullies and the slurs used against him. So why would he actively seek out people like that to be his audience? There is a term called transference- “the redirection of feelings and desires and especially those unconsciously retained from childhood towards a new object”. Dan might have used his new found fame to finally receive validation from the kind of people who tormented him throughout his youth. This is a far more common occurrence that we realize. This may be why he venamently shut down any inquisition about his sexuality; it wouldn’t fit the image being a “lad”. (Toxic masculinity is a bastard).
Dan’s rejection of his young female fan base left a bitter taste in many people’s mouths. I do believe there was some underlying learned misogyny present as Dan seemed to belittle his popularity due to “ shipping teenage girls” not being as important as an older (and more male) fan base. We’ve all heard the shit teenage girls get for liking literally anything and how it somehow is less valid if a community is largely female. It came as a shock that this person seemed to almost hate his audience while simultaneously telling us how non threatening he was (or talking about sleeping with his teddy for 18 years while joking about r*pe). Can we blame the culture at the time? Partly. Can we blame his lack of solid identity and the confusion that comes along with it? Maybe. He still made those choices to say those things, but it’s important to remember the stupidity that comes with being that age and the influence of pop culture (particularly since it was his job).
The most important factor when discussing pre 2014 Dan is the undiagnosed mental illness. Depression is horrific and daunting beast to tackle by yourself, let alone played out for the entire internet to see. The rants, waffles, and sometimes cruel behavior stemmed from an incredibly dark place and I cannot begin to imagine how he felt knowing that his every move was being watched.
I am not excusing everything he did or said, but it’s important to remember where he was at mentally. I think that 2018 Dan is a great example of personal growth and actively trying to be a better person. He admitted some of the mistakes he made as a young scared kid. I think Mandy said it best- “his personality wasn’t finished baking”. Yeah, he was an ass who deserved a swift kick in the nuts, but he was also a young person who hadn’t fully come to terms with who he was.

Heya purge! I saw in one of your tags that you’d been consuming fic for around 20 years! That’s like my whole life. Mind telling us how things have changed? I’m sure places like ao3 have changed things a lot. I’m just really curious in fandom and fanfic culture! :3 x
Ao3 is a fucking godsend let me tell you. I won’t make a lot of the same points and stuff that fannish history folks have already documented (how it literally changed, and all the fic we’ve lost that isn’t backed up on floppy disk somewhere… I’d say we’ve lost an equivalent to the digital burning of alexandria honestly) but i can tell you my experience :3
I’ll stick it under a cut cuz i kind of rambled… but i had fun doing so ahahha xD sorry you unleashed the tiger from the cage xD
We all make jokes about ‘being there’ when stuff in fandom history happened, but i’ve been around since all the major purges (LOL my name is so fitting in retrospect ahahha). ff.net’s various purges (and the whole anne rice suing fanfic writers and shit… i never DID agree to their new terms of service haha), geocities sites going down, obviously the more recent shit too, but like I’ve been around even for the creations of certain, older fanfic sites too (one of the oldest slash forums for lord of the rings fics for example… I was there, Gandalf LOLOL!!… and now that i check the date on that i feel old as balls thanks anon xDDD and wow my one fic is still up there PFFFFT) but like, I come from an era where you took your floppy disk and copy/pasted shit from online (once it even loaded) for later reading, and also so you could find it again, because also before ff.net it was hard to find stuff. I’m pre-google ya’ll xD You dont UNDERSTAND the horrors of trying to find anything pre-google. Ya’ll have it so fucking good D:
There was never an abundance of content like there is today, and so you can bet your shit we were grateful as fuck for what was out there, let alone for someone with a decent command of writing and storytelling. Everyone commented on everything (once that was something even implemented… it was email lists before that, and comments sent in that way… i still have my e-mailed comments from fic readers haha), and it was (and still is, in my honest opinion because people entitled as FUCK now) one of the GREATEST faux paus you could do to be reading a fic (esp. multi-chaptered) and not comment. The indignity of not giving back a little (and it still is a little, which is why i get so damn fired up on this subject) for aaaaaaaall the words and story and everything you just read was a serious sin against fanfic writers. I still think its seriously fucked up not to comment (and again, i’ve mentioned that if you dont got the spoons, thats obviously different) but like, the entitlement that runs rampant today did not even exist back then. Yeah, you still had the assholes whose comment would literally consist only of “where’s the rest?” with ZERO actual thanks or input while expecting/thinking they deserve more (and THEN you could remove chapters or stories, cuz god giveth and damn does she taketh away xD), but it wasn’t nearly as prolific as it is today.
The commenting culture today and the backlash against writers wanting comments on their work in return for providing said free content makes me mad enough to wanna curb stomp some people. I’m a bartender, I don’t put up with shit HAHA xD But the entitlement especially now and people who act like writers are being uppity for wanting a small return on their craft are disgusting. Same type of entitlement as art thieves (we all know the type). We didn’t put up with that shit back then. People acting like little bitches wanting free stuff for literally nothing? We’d pull the whole fic. And the community would handle it and it usually turned into a teaching moment about how damn important it is to comment and just how much freaking control writers DO have over their media. We’d pull it from public view unless amends were made (whether that be a private note from someone entitled finally paying their fucking due with proper humility, or reaching a comment count when you had hundreds of people reading but not commenting). Damn i miss taking away fic xD We played hardball back then xD
That was the fucking worst and people were rightfully denied access to fic if hits didn’t coincide with comments. You could publish a chapter and then decide to remove it from view (either for editing, or hostage taking for comments…. which i miss dearly AHAHAH it forced people to learn to be proper commenters and interact with those whose media they were consuming). It’s a big part of what I miss because just like a proper community, people kept each other in check and made sure everyone played nice. You enjoyed a fic? You sure as hell let that writer know. Now though…. the entitlement drives me up the fucking absolute walls and makes me wanna put stuff behind a paywall sometimes…. everyone is lucky im lazy as shit tho AHAHAH and im usually fine after venting xD
But yeah, fanfic culture in general has shifted in a major way to constantly consume and NEVER give back, either in comments, or creating new content yourself to also add to the community (for example as i’m sure we’re all aware, like ALL the people who bitch about certain ships or ‘why ship this when you can ship THIS?’…. Like, instead of bitching that ‘WAH WAH this author doesnt WRITE the ship I LIKE why can’t they write THAT??’ people came up with the radical idea of CREATING the content they wanted to see :| And if weren’t that good of a writer/artist to do so? Well then you SUPPORTED the writers/artists you enjoyed by leaving comments on their shit OR getting a commission… Goddamn i remember when even ‘commissioning’ people was a wild concept… Ya’ll dont know ahahah xD
I do believe that this is a huge source of where Anti-shipper behavior has stemmed from; entitlement gone berserk. And public schools and shit are still largely full of my parents’ generation who were not computer-literate either in function or courtesy, so even as internet social skills are not being taught correctly (or safety; they scared the SHIT out of us back in the day and now everyone has all their shit and pictures online haha) so there’s also a huge disconnect socially which i think has impacted online fandom spaces and what is considered acceptable or not. People also turn into fucking swine when they think they’re anonymous online (and boy do they change their tune fucking quickly when you out them) and i think the whole anonymity thing is also a factor of this whole entitlement issue in fandom spaces; making demands without giving ANYTHING back. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, I don’t put up with that shit, and it’s not a coincidence I was going to work for the CIA after I just left Japan about 3yrs back (thank fuck I didn’t cuz FUUUUCK this administration) cuz people are dumb as shit and basic tracking skills to call someone out on their bullshit has been my bread and butter since i was like 12 haha. You act dishonest and entitled, and it’s gonna come back to you in some shape or form. You’re going to reap what you sow. That was the motto back then and I still believe in it today.
Hell, it has shocked the FUCK out of me the few times i’ve had people tell me ‘omg me and my friend were talking about your latest update!’ and i’m just like O_O????? because also back in the day, ‘fanfiction’ was kind of a taboo word. You never said you were into fanfic in mixed company. You more or less NEVER discussed it publicly (I’m not even talking dirty stuff, just normal, sfw fanfiction) because it primarily existed only online (for me; i’m post-fan magazines but pre-internet fanfic sites LOLOL). Hell, I got my college english professor into fanfiction. She didn’t even know what it was, let alone that something like that existed, and I had to explain it to her my first year of college kind of with a red face xD She was a writing-professor too so like, let that date the culture a bit. Like, if that was literally her major field of expertise and she didn’t know about it, that should tell you how not-mainstream fanfic was.
I’m kind of out of touch with that myself. Do kids (ya’ll are kids to me okay? xD) mention fanfiction as a reading/entertainment medium in normal conversation? Like, you could mention, without getting weird looks, ‘oh i enjoy reading fanfiction’ or (and i’m like internally gasping at the idea here) being able to say ‘yeah i enjoy writing fanfiction’? Is that a thing? I sure as hell don’t tell my peers that I write fanfic, let alone that i’m approaching 1million words for borderlands stuff alone AHAHAH It’s STILL taboo and seen as a lesser writing medium to folks my age. If you weren’t in a ‘geek’ circle (and i mean, i had friends who played D&D at lunch, and one friend who we mentioned fanfic together with) then culturally, as an art form, it wasn’t acceptable to discuss. Like, i’m STILL in that mindset that fanfic is not something to be discussed off the internet with people and it makes me very very uncomfortable to do so unless i know 100% I can speak discretely with someone. That’s what the offline culture was. I know its way different in some respects, like me and my youngest sister are 10yrs apart and her experiences with fandom are wildly different, but the idea of people actually talking about someone’s fic together with friends absolutely blows my fucking mind.
So, it’s changed in good ways too xD I just fucking HATE people who think they’re entitled to never comment or give back to the community sooooo i tend to get stuck on that issue, ESPECIALLY, again, as a writer approaching 1million words. *salute* doing my duty to the fandom community LOLOL or polluting the fandom community if you’re an anti AHAHAH antis can suck my entire ass and i’ll go on to put another million words of what they HATE into the world and they cant stop me ;3 spite is a fabulous motivator xD
The tools back then were a lot more crude, abilities and functionality was limited (but also better in some ways; moving fic to the ‘backroom’ so to speak), and even finding stuff was hard and relied on the hushed whispers of friends, but damn the community was better. So much better. So much more positive and accountability made people decent. So like, I do LOVE a lot of what we have now, but we have lost SO much. Both in terms of content and sense of community. I wish people would put more positivity into the content they’re consuming and lift up others. It’s why i try my damnedest to leave commenting tags on EVERY SINGLE THING i ever reblog here, because i *know* firsthand how much it means. To scream your art into the silence and only get the equivalent of stares back is maddening.
So yeah. Stuff has changed. Capitalism and censorship are running especially rampant hand-in-hand right now, and lord forbid we come full circle where there are no more places for us. I mean, if we have to go back to email lists, hell I’m already ready and an old veteran to that system anyhow. I’d miss all the content we all have access to…. but then there’s also that 90% commenting rate you get with that kind of system so HEEEEEY let it all fall down! bahahah xD

Here’s Evegnia Medvedeva’s interview from here that I translated.
Zhenya, did you and your mom manage to find an apartment?
Yes, of course, online. How can you come to another country not having a place to live in?
So the owner of this apartment will meet you in the airport?
No, Jason Brown will. He’ll bring mom and I to our new home. And starting June 18th I have a detailed training schedule.
For almost 3 years you were competing and winning almost everything. Now you’re starting from scratch: new coach, new life circumstances, no clear point of how long will it take to adapt and what the result will be. Are you worried about possible losses?
You know, I’m a realist. I’ll be sad about my result when I realize that could’ve done better but didn’t do it. I can confess to myself in unpleasant things. If I realize that yes, it’s my limit and I cannot do better at the moment, then I say to myself I got the place I deserve.
I clearly understand now that a new life is starting for me now. I never lived abroad, was never trained by foreign coaches, never ate unusual food longer than 2-3 weeks. So everything’s changing, it’s a new page for me.
Is it scary?
No, I cannot wait for it. Honestly, right now I don’t even want to think I may lose to someone. I’m trying to look a couple of years ahead. First of all, it’s important to stay healthy. This is my main goal. But this goal shouldn’t interfere with the result – I need to find the right balance in exercise, nutrition, mental state, physical shape.
Before Pyeongchang your life was limited by ice rink borders – you either trained, slept, or prepared to train.
Yes, that’s how it was for all these years!
Now it’s obvious that you sort of let yourself go in a way some time ago. You had free time, you had an opportunity to try a new life and not come to the rink every day after leaving your coach. How did you feel about that new life?
I didn’t really let myself go. I opened my eyes and look around. Yes, I had the goal – the Olympics. I was working for it, only caring about competing there and nothing else. I basically had no friends, no interests even though I think if myself as a many-sided person. I didn’t meet new people, or didn’t keep in touch because of the lack of time and sometimes desire. There were just practices. But I guess something kept growing inside me.
This winter, when I was injured and couldn’t skate, I thought: will I finish my skating career not having friends, other skills personal life – anything? So when after the Olympics I opened my eyes, so to speak, my life changed, became fuller, like a stream that became a river. I got friends, a lot of new interests, even pre-requisites for a future change of profession that I might like or might change 150 times.
Can you say no to this life? Limit yourself again, train again, be motivated by a new goal? Do you even want to do it?
I do want to. I think I can leave absolutely everything behind for a goal. The main thing is to be realistic, don’t do anything that might hurt you or your family. I often think that my mom and grandma sacrificed a lot so I could fulfill myself as a skater. So if I feel I don’t meet their expectations… I don’t want to feel that.
So sometimes you feel guilty in regards to your family?
Very seldom. My parents are also realistic and they know the main thing is to keep working. No result – keep working. Good result? Great – keep working. But if I for some reason don’t perform my duties, then I feel guilty.
How long did it take to recover after the Olympics?
It’d been a long process. Actually my body and my mind allow me to recover quickly, but after the Olympics it took time. I can’t even say I mentally recovered by now.
I heard the version you wanted to go to Canada not to train and keep competing but to have new opportunities for performing in shows.
I’ll tell you a secret: I have no shortage of invitations to perform in shows.
Was Brian Orser your only candidature for a coach?
Yes.
Why him?
Because of Yu-na Kim. That was my first thought when I started thinking of switching coaches: Yu-na won the OGM at 19, and at 23 became 2nd in Sochi. At Beijing Olympics I’ll be 22. It’s not only about her, of course, Orser had a lot of athletes who competed at more than 1 OG and had long careers.
Are you bothered by the fact that Brian Orser accepted many new athletes this summer?
Not at all. All my life I’ve been growing and training with many rivals, so I’m not bothered. Besides, first of all, majority of Orser’s group is boys. And second of all, Orser has an individual approach to every skater, he talks about it himself. So he has time and attention for everybody. And I like to train among many top-level athletes, it can give me more than I had before.
How did you manage to keep in shape without a place to train [after the Olympics]?
The shape I had during the Olympics is impossible to maintain, and there’s no need to. I was pretty washed out at the OG – was preparing myself to peak in the LP. So I had the minimum weight and maximum morale. That’s why the recovery took a long time.
I gained weight but not much. I have an exerciser at home that helps me keep muscles in shape. As for a functional state, no athletes can maintain it without regular full-time training. That’s why I’m going to Canada.
Did Orser express any wishes [for a training process before coming to Canada]?
No. I think when we spoke in Korea he understood I’d be training due to my opportunities. If I have ice in Moscow – I’ll train on ice (I didn’t). Couple of hours before going to Japan for shows we got an opportunity to skate so I worked on some jumps. Been wanting to do it for a while.
Haven’t jumped for a while?
Yes. I felt very satisfied when they came back.
I always wanted to know, by the way: do you have time to think about something during the jump?
About everything! A thousand things come to mind. And I can see everything that’s going on around. I try to control everything.
Did you discuss new programs?
Not yet, I want to hear different opinions about it. Not just Brian’s, but Tracy Wilson’s, David Wilson’s who’ll be my choreographer.
Do you know them?
I know David, Tracy – not so much. I know their students much better – Yuzuru, Javi, Jason.
And what do you want yourself?
If we’re talking about the season, I’m not going to miss any starts. No open test skates in Russia, no GPs. I’d like to change my style – I changed as a person so I can’t stay the same on the ice. I view life and the world differently now.
I’m sure when I come to Canada everything in my head will be upside down again. I’d like to try a new image on ice. There are many I haven’t tried.
What jumps do you want to perform?
I have thoughts about it but don’t want to talk about it now.
In this regard you probably have to be ‘inspired’ by the new changes in rules that limit the number of jumps in the 2nd part of the program.
These changes became the base for my work, let’s say that. If we were told we had to do all jumps in the 2nd part of the program, I’d go and do it without saying a word.
Did you like all your competitive programs?
I loved my first senior program where I portrayed a deaf girl. I liked ‘Karenina’ very much. But that program I won my second Worlds with – I didn’t like it at all at first. Only by the end I got into it. I skated it well, I broke the world record with it, and I liked it as a tool that helps you to achieve what you want. But with ‘Karenina’ I was head over hills in love. Especially after those ‘January stars’ where there was only a nice dress [that first LP they scrapped]. I was all into ‘Karenina’.
Oksana Baiul’s coach once said if an athlete goes into the triple jump too much in character, he lands the jump on his back. Do what degree do you allow yourself to break character for elements?
“Karenina” allowed me not to do it. When I skated it at the Olympics, I just let my body do the work and stayed in character completely. I didn’t even try to interrupt myself or visualize like you sometimes do when you skate a LP in practice. I had a maddening inner freedom. If you only knew what was going through my mind when the step sequence started.
And what was that?
I was asking myself: ‘Do you realize it’s the Olympics? That millions of people are looking at you now (maybe even a billion)? And that if you do a smallest mistake now everything will go to hell?’ And I replied to myself: ‘Yeah, I get it’. ‘Is it cool?’ – ‘Yeah, it is. Let’s keep enjoying it’. And there was no pressure at all.
Did you ever ask yourself why almost all previous Olympic women champions didn’t want to or didn’t manage to go to the 2nd Oympics? Baiul, Lipinski, Sotnikova?
Most likely it’s because of fear of losing everything you’ve been working on for years. The desire to keep skating is always there, I think, it’s just you get an opportunity to try a new life and you get sucked in. Not everyone gets to understand that sport and normal life aren’t always combinable.
I knew a wrestler who after winning the OG at 23 retired, saying ‘I don’t want to miss my life while I practice’. Do you know this feeling?
No, I don’t. I had a normal childhood .I played games – not on the street but in the gym, but I had fun. I don’t think I’m missing my life now. I finished school, got into university.
When did you learn English?
I didn’t learn it purposefully; I just knew I didn’t have a choice.
What do you mean?
I saw athletes my age from other countries chat between competitions all the time, and I was thinking: I’d love to talk to you but I don’t know how. So I tried once, then I tried again.
During one trip I learnt 3 words, during the other – 5. Read somewhere on the internet how to build a phrase, learnt some slang. And didn’t even notice how I became able not just to speak but to give interviews. It’s not perfect, I sometimes stumble and sometimes use the grammar wrong. But I’m understood, and people understand me.
Is it difficult for you to admit you don’t know something?
Not at all! I don’t know many things, I can’t do many things. I’m not ashamed to admit it because it’s true.
How long can you stay without skating till it gets uncomfortable?
Not long at all. I can’t sit still, motionless – my muscles start to hurt and I even get physically uncomfortable. When you don’t skate for a while, you feel the same, your legs hurt. Also when I have a free day and have no ice, I get a headache! There’s probably something in the ice I can’t live without. Besides, it’s emotionally difficult for me to just stay in place.
How fast the skills get lost when you’re not practicing.
Very fast. You stop feeling the blades. You skate and it feels in your head like you’re doing everything automatically but your legs don’t cooperate with your brain. You want one thing but you end up in entirely different place. All the most ridiculous falls happened to me because of it.
Coming back to your move to Canada: you couldn’t not think about the funds your new life will require.
My mom was thinking about it. It was her task to think whether we’re ready for it.
And when your mom said you’re ready…
I realized it’s time to grab my skates and go to Canada.
Did anyone try to talk you out of it?
Honestly? Didn’t even try.
