Imani

“Daddy you can go now I have everything. What more do you want to do?” I asked my dad while I sat on my bed. Today I was moving into my dorm and he was acting like he didn’t want to leave. The man is acting like he’s never going to see me again or something.

“Nasir, the girl is fine. Damn let her get her own room together.” Shante told him.

“This is my baby girl man; you expect this shit to be easy for me? She’s just 18.” He told her.

“Alright and they have dorm advisors and she has a curfew remember. She’s not ready for her own apartment and this is the next best thing.”

“Imani you set up all of your stuff we’re going to get going.” Shante hugged me then let me go. When my dad hugged me, he hugged me like I was about to ship out to the army or something. He is so over dramatic sometimes.

“I love you alright; call me if you need anything Imani.”

“I know daddy, sheesh. I got it.” He kissed my cheek then they walked out. I plopped down on my bed looking around the room. It was little as hell and plain with only two beds and one desk but I guess whenever my roommate comes we can set up.

I went through my phone for a little bit when a short Spanish looking girl came walking in with a suitcase in each hand and a duffle bag over her shoulder. When she saw me she smiled. “Hey I’m Noelle; you can just call me NuNu though. Are you Imani?”

“Yeah that’s me,” I smiled at her. “It’s nice to meet you, you can call me Mani.”

“Alright well how long have you been in here?”

“Not that long, my parents just left. My step mother bought me a whole bunch of stuff so I was waiting for you to come so we could set up together. We might as well have this little closet of a room look like something.”

“That’s a really good idea, let’s bust this shit out.” We immediately went right to work on setting up the room. The while time we were getting everything together we were talking and getting to know each other.

NuNu was originally from Newark, mixed with Dominican and Trinidadian, she’s 18 just like me and she wanted to be a lawyer. From what she told me her life wasn’t really too easy. Her mother was a drug addict who she hasn’t seen since she was 13 before she went to live with her father. Just like me, she was a spoiled daddy’s girl but she wasn’t as sheltered as me and she was a party animal. By the time we were done with our room she was already talking about going to some party.

“I don’t think I should go to a party. I still have to unpack and everything.” I told her while she went through her clothes.

“Girl we just spent two hours setting up this room and that’s only because we were goofing off half the time but that shit was a lot of work. Listen I just want to have fun before classes start. We’re about to be packed down with school work. We might as well cut up the next couple of days. Just come to the party with me, you won’t have to stay for a long time. An hour is good?”

I looked at her with my eyebrow raised then just shrugged. Why not? “Fine I’ll go, but I’m not staying for long. What should I wear?”

“Well it’s nothing too special so you don’t have to be dressed up. You can wear sneakers if you want to.”

“Alright,” I went through my clothes for ten minutes before finding the perfect outfit. Since it was still hot outside I decided on wearing a pair of cuffed jean shorts, a white crop top and some nude Adidas. Gold hoops were in my ears; around my neck was a Givenchy chain and a white leather Tory Burch Pebbles saddle bag was over my shoulder. My curly hair was brushed back into a tight ponytail with a navy blue polo hat was on top of my head.

“Are you ready?” NuNu asked after she was done getting ready herself. Just like me she wore some jean shorts, a white cropped tank top with a metallic jacket over it and she had a pair of white high top air forces on her feet.

“Yeah, do you drive?”

“Yeah my daddy got me a car when I graduated. You drive?”

“I can drive I just don’t have my license yet. I have to go take the test then my dad is going to give me my truck. Until then I’m either walking or catching a cab. I don’t really do public transportation.”

“Well I’m driving tonight so let’s go girl.” We left out room and went down to NuNu’s car. When we were settled inside she pulled off.

“So where is this party at?” I asked, I should’ve asked that when she first brought it up but I wasn’t even thinking.

“My cousin lives down Booker T.”

“The projects?”

“Yeah, you’ve heard of it?”

“Oh yeah I’ve heard of it and I can’t go over there.”

“What? Are you scared or something?”

“It’s not that I’m scared I just know that it’s not a good idea. It’s people that will feel the need to try something with me because of who my father is.” I told her not really wanting to go into full detail.

One of the main people I didn’t want to see was my mother, I know she’s out somewhere lurking because she never stays in the house.

“It’s not like you’re going alone I’m going with you. I’m small but I will fuck somebody up. One hour then we can go. Please?” I looked at her with my eyebrow raised.

As much as I knew this was a bad idea I still just decided to say fuck it. I just knew to keep my eyes open and to stay sober. I wasn’t drinking anything or doing anything with anybody.

The whole ride I was trying to calm my nerves down. If my father knew I was coming over here he would flip out on me. My whole damn family would flip out on me to be honest. I haven’t been here since I got taken away from my mother and that was for my own protection.

My father and uncles grew up a couple of blocks away from Booker T housing projects unlike my mother, Shante and Millz’ mother Keisha who were born and raised over there.

When my father and uncles left they took their women and kids with them. Everybody moved out of Jersey City except me. My father wanted me with him but of course my mother wasn’t having that and she never wanted to leave so I had no choice but to grow up there.

Between some of the girls hating me for no damn reason and my mother trying to fight me outside in front of everybody, numerous times living there was anything but fun for me. My father barely wanted me in Jersey City as it is so I knew once he found out I was down this way by myself he was going to lose his shit.

When we pulled up she parked her car then we got out and crossed the street to the entrance and of course all eyes were on us. I looked down at my outfit mad at myself for even wearing this. If I knew I was coming over here I would’ve put on more clothes and I wouldn’t have put a $700 chain around my neck or $500 sneakers on my feet. If something were to happen I know for a fact somebody was snatching this chain and I was going to be pissed off.

“You need to call your cousin because I’m not walking in one of these buildings with just you.”

“Alright,” She pulled her phone out and made the call to her cousin while I crossed my arms over my chest looking around. I recognized damn near everybody that was outside. I guess some things never change. “He’s coming, stop looking so scary and worried. You’re going to make us targets.”

I didn’t even say anything I stood right there the same way waiting on whoever her cousin was. Five minutes went past before she hit my shoulder.

“Here he comes. What’s up Derrick?” NuNu said with a big smile on her face.

I looked up and instantly sucked my teeth when I saw who she was talking to. I knew who Derrick was and I can’t stand him or his friends. All they do is nit-pick with people and talk shit. He used to make fun of the way my mother treated me like it was funny. He would go so far as to lie to her just to watch me get me in trouble and I’ve always hated him for that.

“Derrick this is my roommate Im-“

“Imani Diamond? I know that’s not you baby girl, damn.” He looked me up and down while licking his lips. I just glared at him but didn’t say anything.

“Y’all know each other?” NuNu asked him.

“Yeah, her mother lives across the hall from me. Damn she was just talking about you the other day too.”

“I’m sure she was,” I shook my head then looked at NuNu. “I’m not staying here I’ll just call my brother to come get me.” I pulled my phone out to call Haze since he stayed in Bayonne and that wasn’t that far away, it would probably only take him twenty minutes to come get me with the way he drives.

“Why? You’re acting like it’s late we just got here. It’s not even nine yet.” NuNu looked at me confused.

“I know that but if this is who’s throwing the party I want no parts of it. I’m going back; you can stay if you want to.”

“NuNu don’t even worry about it, fuck this stuck up bitch. She always did act like she’s better than somebody. Fuck you bitch; we don’t need you here anyway.” Derrick snapped at me.

“D, you need to chill. If she doesn’t want to go to the party she doesn’t have to. Shit, with the way you’re acting I could see why.” NuNu said to him.

“Man fuck her,” he snatched my phone from my hand then stepped back.

“Give me my phone Derrick!” I shouted making everybody that was outside look in our direction.

“Bitch you better watch who the fuck you yelling at! Stuck up ass bitch, I should call your mother and tell her your ass is down there.” I guess he saw the flash of fear in my eyes when he mentioned her because he started laughing. “Oh look, you not so tough right now are you?”

“Just…Just give me my phone back please.” When I heard my voice crack and I wanted to smack myself for showing him that what he was saying was affecting me.

“Derrick, give her the damn phone. What are you doing this bullshit for?” NuNu snapped at him.

“Man fuck you too NuNu if you wanna take up for this bitch.” I went to reach for my phone but he backed up. “Back the fuck up.” He pushed me back sending me to the floor landing right on my butt.

I looked up at him wishing looks could kill when all of a sudden a punch to the side of his face sent him to the floor. It didn’t stop there; whoever punched him started stomping him the fuck out. “Don’t you ever in your muthafuckin’ life put your hands on her nigga! What the fuck is on your brain!?” Instantly I recognized Kason’s voice.

I got up on my feet and ran over to where he was pulling him away from Derrick, who was on the floor beat up like five niggas jumped on him. “Stop, you got him. Calm down please.” I grabbed his face with one hand making him look at me. “Stop, just stop.”

He nodded then moved my hand from his face kissing my palm. “You good?”

“Yeah I’m fine I just want to go back to my dorm.”

“I’ll take you back come on, get your phone.” I went over to where Derrick was and picked my phone up before looking at NuNu who was standing there looking like she didn’t know what to do. “Are you staying here?”

“No, I’m going to head back too.” She looked at Derrick one more time then walked off with us.

“I’m rude, Kason this is my roommate NuNu. NuNu this is Kason.”

“Nice to meet you shorty. How did y’all get here?”

“I drove; y’all can just follow me back if Imani is going to ride with you.” NuNu told him.

I shook my head looking at her. “No I rode with you, it would be rude to not go back home with you.”

“Its fine, you can ride with him. Go ahead.” She smirked walking off to her car. I got in the car with Kason and he sped off soon after.

“What the fuck were you doing over there Imani? You know better than to do that shit.”

“I know but she wanted to go to a party, I didn’t know it was the party of an asshole. What were you doing over this way?”

“I had to handle some business. You know your father will more than likely hear about this shit right?”

“Oh trust me I know, and I’m not ready for that lecture. I’m just glad you were there.” The whole ride back to my dorm was quiet for the most part. When we pulled NuNu got out of her car and waved at us before going in our building.

“How long you been here?”

“I just moved in today.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were moving in? We text all day every day but you couldn’t tell me you were moving? I would’ve come and helped you.”

Since the day of my first driving lesson Kason and I have been talking. I don’t think a whole day has gone by without us talking. Today was the first time in weeks that we haven’t texted and that was because I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get that room together.

“My dad was helping me; I didn’t feel like being questioned about anything.”

“The most he was going to ask you was what is going on between us. Now I know if I get asked that I have my answer ready to go.”

“You do? What would it be?”

“I’m feelin’ you. I’ve been feelin’ you since we met. The only reason I never said anything was because you were just about to turn 17 and I didn’t want your father chopping my head off.”

“Are you serious?”

“Hell yeah, you’re 18 now though and you’re out of his house so it’s not like he can dictate what you do now.”

“You’ve liked me since we met? All of this time I thought it was just a one sided thing.”

“Are you trying to say you like me too?” He smirked at me. I almost wanted to slap myself for letting that slip out of my mouth. I have to think before I speak.

“I mean…I do-“I couldn’t even finish my sentence because he cut me off by kissing me. I was stuck. I didn’t even know what to do. I’m guessing he caught it because he leaned his head back with his eyebrow raised.

“You never kissed somebody before have you?” I didn’t say anything I just shook my head no while he chuckled. “How is that possible?”

“I just haven’t, when I lived with my mother I never really went anywhere and when I did boys were never involved. Then living with my dad boys really were out of the question. Is that weird?”

“A little bit but it’s not a problem, I get it.” He shrugged his shoulders. “As far as the kissing thing, you just go with the flow.”

“What? You’re going to teach me how to kiss now?”

“Hell yeah, but you can’t be going around using the shit I show you on the next nigga. I’m not with that.”

“Why not?”

“Why not?” He laughed then licked his lips before giving me a serious look. “I’m going to keep it completely honest with you. I like you, you like me. I’m attracted to you, you’re attracted to me. I’m already your first kiss and I plan on being your first in a lot of shit. I just need to know if you’re rockin’ with me or not.”

“Yes,” I said with no hesitation. He looked at me shocked for a second before we both fell out laughing.

“You should be getting to your room now before you get in trouble or something.” He told me when I finally stopped giggling.

“You’re right.” I opened the door and was getting ready to get out until he grabbed my hand.

“I know you weren’t about to get out of my shit without giving me a kiss.” Leaning over I gave him a peck on the lips making me laugh again. “I’ll take that shit for now, next time it’s going to be different.”

“Yeah I’m sure. Good night Kason.”

“Good night Imani.” I got out of his car and closed the door then went straight into my building and up to the room with a huge smile on my face. I couldn’t wipe it off right now if I wanted to. When I walked in NuNu smirked at me.

“Somebody looks mighty happy.”

“I am,” I laughed at her. I put my bag on my bed then sat down.

“I’m sorry about what happened with my cousin. I didn’t know he was going to act like that with you.”

“It’s alright. I just need you to know I’m never going over there again.”

“I don’t blame you, fuck Derrick’s dumb ass though. So is Kason your boyfriend?”

When she asked me that I really didn’t know what to say because I didn’t know if he was or wasn’t. I think that’s what he meant by what he said to me but I wasn’t completely sure. “I think so.”

Trouble

“Look at this nigga walking in smiling hard as shit.” Vick said when Kason brought his ass in the warehouse we were at.

“Shut up nigga, here.” He dropped the duffle bag he was carrying on the table then sat down. “It’s all there and if it’s not just let me know I’ll take my ass right back down there.”

“We’ll let you know.” I told him. “What are you smiling about anyway?”

“Oh I just dropped Imani off.”

“Imani who? My cousin Imani?” Vick asked him.

“Yeah nigga, you know another one?”

“You had her with you picking up money?” I asked. I know this nigga wasn’t that fuckin’ stupid.

“Hell no, I picked up some money from the dumb niggas in Booker T and got it in my car. I’m about to get in my shit to leave when I hear yelling. I look over and that nigga Derrick pushed her hard as fuck and made her fall. You already know I whooped his ass then took her and her roommate back to the dorm.”

“The fuck was she doing down there anyway? She knows better than to do that stupid shit.”

“She said her roommate wanted to go to a party but they didn’t even get to the shit because that dumb nigga wanted to be an ass.”

“Who you said pushed her?” Vick asked, I could tell by the look on his face he was pissed off.

“That nigga Derrick, I handled it though.”

“You beat his ass, that’s cool and all but that nigga gotta go for touching her period. I don’t give a damn if it was only a push, he’s gone.”

“Aight well do you man.”

“Aye Vick, you heard from your cousin?” I asked him.

“You say that like I’m automatically supposed to know who you’re talking about. Which cousin nigga?”

“Millz,”

“Nah not really, she’s been M.I.A for the last couple of weeks. Why what’s up?”

“Nothing, I just haven’t seen her since the night we went to the club. Usually she’s doing pop ups.”

“Well I don’t know what’s going on with her. She’s good though, if she wasn’t her mother would’ve said something to one of us.”

“Oh aight, cool.” I nodded. The only reason I even asked Vick about Millz is because she’s been dodging me. I call she doesn’t answer, I text she ignores that shit. It’s cool though because I’ll being see shorty around. If she’s not home she’s nowhere else but with Darnell.

I sat outside of Darnell’s building holding my phone in my hand. As soon as I rode up I spotted Millz’ car parked. I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that she thought I wasn’t going to see her at some point. Initially I was going to just go upstairs and drag her ass out with me but I decided to be nice and tell her to come outside.

I called her phone and to my surprise she actually answered. “Trouble, why are you calling me?” She asked in a hushed tone.

“Fuck is you doing? Hiding in the bathroom or some shit?”

“Nigga what do you want?”

“Come outside I need to talk to you.”

“What?”

“I’m outside of Darnell��s building come outside. Don’t make me come up there to get you.”

“Darnell isn’t going to let you in if I tell her not to so relax my nigga. I don’t feel like talking about what we did Trouble. Just leave it alone you got a girlfriend.”

“Millz, you think I give a fuck about Darnell letting me in? Come outside or I’m coming in. You got five minutes bruh.” I hung up the phone and sat back in my seat. Knowing Millz I know she’s going to try me and not bring her ass outside. When five minutes went past I got out of my car and went upstairs to Darnell’s floor. I knocked on the door and nobody answered. Shaking my head I pulled my gun from waist. “She really is trying to play with me.”

I took the silencer from my pocket screwing it on the tip of my gun before I shot the knob off before pushing the door opened and going inside. “Trouble I know you didn’t just shoot my fuckin’ door!” Darnell shouted at me as she came downstairs.

“I sure did, blame your cousin I told her to bring her ass downstairs.”

“Yo, y’all are on some bullshit. Millz, go with this nigga before he keeps doing some bullshit! Trouble you paying for my fuckin’ door nigga!” I went in my pocket pulling out a wad of money. I pulled off a couple of hundreds then handed them to her.

“My bad Darnell but she was playing with me.”

“Whatever, I’m not trying to hear that shit. You shot my fuckin’ door open nigga. MILLZ BRING YO ASS ON!”

“I’m coming damn!’ Millz snapped at her as she came down the stairs. “Trouble leave me the fuck alone, I’m not dealing with a nigga that got a whole bitch.”

“Calm yo ass down and let’s go.” I went over and grabbed her arm then pulled her out of Darnell’s apartment.

“Let my arm go!” She snatched away from me but walked with me outside. “What about my car?”

“I’ll handle it just come on.” We walked over to my car and got in. When I pulled off she looked at me.

“What is wrong with you? Why would you shoot her fuckin’ door?”

“You wanted to act like I was playing with you. I don’t like dealing with the stupid childish shit.”

“What do you want from me Trouble? I’m not going there with you, I’m so off niggas it’s not even funny.”

“What happened?”

“Your bitch happened! One of her basic bitch ass cousins posted a fuckin’ picture of us leaving together on Facebook. Cam saw that shit and flipped out, the crazy part is as he’s going off about you I see he got a thick ass hickie on his neck. I fucked him up then dipped, niggas aint shit.”

“That doesn’t go for everybody.”

“Oh please, you got a girlfriend yet you’re shooting down doors trying to get to me. Like I said, niggas aint shit and I’m not about to play your side chick so you might as well leave me the fuck alone.”

“You hungry?” I asked completely changing the subject. I didn’t want to hear the shit she was kicking because Bianca is a non-factor.

“You really are insane. I know you heard everything I just said.”

“I did, I don’t give a fuck about it right now so I’m asking you are you hungry?”

“Whatever Trouble,”

“I’ll take that as a yes.” I smirked at her. I drove another ten minutes before pulling into a Friday’s parking lot. We both got out the car and walked up to the front door. “You look good,” The jeans she was wearing had her shape on full display. They hugged her hips and ass just right.

“Thanks,” She responded dryly. I knew she had a little attitude but I really didn’t care. I found the shit funny actually. After getting seated and ordering our food and drinks we sat there staring at each other. “What Trouble? Damn, quit staring in my face.”

“What’s wrong with you? I didn’t do shit to you so I’m confused as to why you sitting there with an attitude.”

“I’m just irritated with everything. I mean, I knew he was cheating on me the nigga is a dog but I just didn’t have the proof this time.”

“This time?”

“Yes this time, I caught him cheating on me twice before. Knowing him it was way more than the times I know about.”

“So what did you stay with him for?”

“I love him,” She shrugged. “Well loved him,”

“And you don’t anymore?’

“I haven’t been in love with Cameron for a long time. I don’t even know why I didn’t end it. I guess I was comfortable, but forget that. Tell me why you’re trying to so hard to get me when you have a girl already. You don’t love her?”

“I got love for her, at one point I was in love with her but I can’t get down with the type of chick she is.”

“What type is she?”

“She doesn’t work, she has no drive. She just wants to party and shit, which is alright she’s only 22 years old but you gotta have something else to offer.”

“So why are you after me then? Let’s be real Trouble. Yes I have a job but that’s not what I want to do. The only reason I work there is because I don’t want to dip in the money my daddy left me when he passed. Shit, out of all my cousins I’m the only one doing some bullshit.”

“How do you figure that?”

“Darnell has her nail bar, Imani is going to be a doctor and then there’s me. I work at a daycare with a bunch of snot nose kids I don’t even like.”

“What do you know how to do? Is there anything you like to do? As a matter of fact, what is your degree in?”

“I was a double major so I have one in interior design and one in entrepreneurship.”

“You like to decorate stuff?”

“It’s more than just decorating, but it’s something like that. I redo my room every six months. I want to do the whole house but my mother is always blocking.”

“Didn’t you graduate college two years early?”

“Technically I graduated from high school early. I was basically a senior when I was supposed to be a sophomore.”

“How did you pull that off?”

“When I was in middle school they used to have these programs where you get high school credits. So I did that and then when I was in high school I was taking upperclassmen classes and I went to summer school to get some classes out of the way. One month in a class to get the same credits that would take me three months to get during the school year, really aint that hard of a decision.”

“So you graduated at 15 years old, went to college and graduated from there at 19 and you’re sitting here with two degrees thinking you’re not as good as your cousins? Ma, you gotta stop underestimating yourself.”

“I don’t, I mean I know what I want to do but I don’t know where to start.”

“You have a degree in entrepreneurship and money isn’t even an issue but you don’t know where to start?”

“I have to build up a clientele in order to have a successful business. Who’s going to let me redecorate their whole house? That’s what I mean. I need a portfolio to get clients.”

“I know some people that are shopping for a house. I could hook you up with them to get it together.”

“Who’s buying a house?”

“One of my niggas, are you down to do it or not?”

“Yeah I guess, but that still doesn’t explain the original point.”

“Which was?’

“Why are you coming after me so hard when you have a girl already?”

“Don’t worry about Bianca, let me handle that. Are you done with that nigga for good?”

“Yeah, I can’t keep going through that bullshit. I’m tired of it, he already acts like he’s single and so do I so we might as well be that.”

“Well you won’t be single for long so keep this in mind.”

“Oh lord here we go, Trouble get your shit together.”

“My shit is together, I’m going to handle the Bianca situation.”

“Well I’m single, I’m not about to pause a goddamn thing while you sit over there with a whole girlfriend.”

“What does that mean? You trying to get with other niggas or something?”

“Maybe,” She shrugged.

“Don’t play with me Millz. I bet any nigga that talks to you gets fucked up.”

“Whatever.” She waved me off like she wasn’t taking me serious. It’s cool though, she’ll see I’m not the one to play with.

sorry im answering late!!! but here’s a joenicky (and andyquynh side plot) i have been thinking of, and it might be top 3 ideas i have floating around my head for fics. it got long so most of its under a read more.

ok so another idea i have is like. a joenicky get BACK together slow burn relearning each other type of thing w an andyquynh meeting/getting together through joe & nicky plot as well (andy as friends w joe and quynh as friends w nicky). i want to start this one with nicky+quynh running errands together and they run into joe+andy wherever they are and nicky and joe stop dead and just stare at each other and they’re both freaking out bc “it’s YOU i haven’t seen you in forever im maybe definitely still in love with you”. and andy and quynh are both just like “...what is happening with my friends. also hi you’re hot”. so we get that and then joe and nicky both explain their POVs of why they broke up to andy and quynh, and then it progresses w them getting to know each other again as people and friends bc andy and quynh start dating (and the tension and awkwardness that comes with that), and then there’s like the flashback thing where we learn the whole picture of why they broke up and what went down. then of course the resolution where joe and nicky have both grown and learned the other again and they get back together. (detailed outline and ideas under read more!)

the outline is:

- joe and nicky met while they were working in the same building (diff like departments though) and they like kept running into each other in the elevator and someone would hold the door for the other while they were running late and someone saw someone else working super late to meet a deadline and stayed w them until they left so they weren’t alone and telling each other their office gossip. u know the vibes

- and then they start dating and it’s going great and they’re very happy and they move in together and they meet each other’s family and they go on vacations together and they meet each other’s friends. and they’re together for a WHILE, like a long time. i’ve been thinking somewhere in the 6-8 year range but not married, engagement has maybe been brought up once or twice but it’s nbd to them bc they’re happy as things are and they’re good w what they are to each other.

- THEN something happens where joe&nicky have to break up. i haven’t decided if i want to do something that’s out of their control (moving super far for a job while the other has a really good opportunity where they are, an emergency of some kind that takes them away and they don’t know when they’re coming back- something like that) OR if i wanna go down the route of someone messing up somehow and the other breaks up w them. - but anyways there is a joenicky breakup. and they go there separate ways and it’s like “the one that got away”, “i see you in everything i see and everywhere i go and everyone i meet”, “i get drunk and think about calling you sometimes bc i still have your number memorized”, “i always wonder what would have happened with us if things had just gone differently”, “whenever i see something that reminds me of you i have to force myself not to send you a text”. it’s like that and it’s a bummer all around bc they were obv in love and sometimes people break up bc things just don’t work out or something happens but that doesn’t mean there isn’t love

- then they see each other as described above. im thinking like 5-7 years have passed of not seeing each other/no contact.

- little moments from this idea that keep popping into my head:

- andy and quynh invite joe and nicky both to the beach bc they’re friendly enough at this point that it won’t be weird, and there’s a little moment between joe and nicky where they’re both sitting in the sand next to each other and they’re watching the sunset probably and it’s quiet and nicky whispers “do you know what im thinking of?” (bc this is a big risk for nicky. he treasures his new friendship w joe and wouldn’t risk anything that would have joe out of his life again, but what is he if he isn’t honest with his thoughts. especially around joe.) and chances a glance at joe to find joe already looking at him w a fond teasing smile and joe says “yes. but i’d like to hear you say it anyways.” and nicky laughs honestly and genuinely w joe for the first time in what feels like FOREVER and it feels so good that he doesn’t hesitate to say “malta. our fourth anniversary vacation, when we were on the beach and-“, and joe cuts him off to finish the memory, “-and we spent all day swimming and laying around and doing mindless activities bc we didn’t want to leave”. something something nicky blushes but he blames it on the sun, something something joe digging his toes into the sand to avoid eye contact when he tells nicky he still thinks of that sometimes, something something nicky locking his entire body so he doesn’t reach for joe to comfort him when he tells joe he still thinks about it too. (there is a sad version of this moment but again. it’s heavy)

- an awkward moment between joe and nicky where joe and nicky are hanging out w friends there probably and it’s nice to be around each other again but it’s low pressure bc there’s other people around. and joe accidentally calls nicky “babe” or some other pet name bc it was his habit for YEARS and then he hides out for the rest of the night. as i type this im imagining it’s like a party or something of a mutual friend so there are people to hide with and places to escape to. ofc they find each other again bc nicky KNOWS joe and knows where he would hide out and who his close friends are from this group, and nicky is flustered and stumbling over his words but he tells joe it’s fine, they don’t need to make it into a thing. nicky doesn’t want anything to mess up what they have going again- as friends. joe eyes him for a moment and then he nods and claps nicky on the shoulder and walks away. nicky doesn’t seek him out the rest of the night, just gives him his space. nicky ignores and shoves down the part of him that loves the fact that joe called him babe, that joe would even have that on his mind to let slip so many years after they broke up.

- either joe or nicky seeing the other on a date and being irrationally jealous and doing a terrible job of hiding it. OR mistaking seeing them out with a friend as a date and being jealous and doing a bad job at hiding it. im imaging this toward the middle of the fic where things are close to being normal friends vibes but there’s still one last hoop to jump through to get to that stage. so it’s like awkward but joe and nicky are trying to pretend it’s not bc why would it be, they’re sorta friends and everything is in the past (it’s not). and the date or friend is just standing there watching joe and nicky ‘talk’ and does the awkward thumb behind the shoulder gesture for ‘im gonna go now. sorry not sorry.’ and then there’s a whole thing of like oh great u made my date/friend leave, thanks a lot. (great potential i think for it to be a friend and either joe or nicky being like “thanks a lot, u made my friend uncomfortable” and storming off and leaving the other to sit with the knowledge of it being a friend and then the second wave of “oh im fucked aren’t i”)

- joe gushing to andy about nicky/crying about why they broke up and how he misses nicky is something that can actually be so personal. and also vice versa with nicky and quynh

- joe and/or nicky learning something new about the other is something i am a sucker for with this idea. like dating someone for years and years and then u meet up w them again by random chance and learning that they actually hate a food they said they love or a movie or whatever just bc they other loved it SO much and didn’t want to admit that they hated it. (but then also maybe they grew to love it just a little. bc u loved it so much.)

- so then obv there is the tense moment where joe and nicky could either explain everything and get back together or just say “forget it” and live the rest of their life as friends. they both get to say their piece about why things went down the way they did, how they didn’t want to break up but it’s what happened (or what had to happen if were taking the sad heavy route), how they’re different people now but they’ve spent the last however many months getting to know the other again, how they didn’t think it would be possible to fall in love with the other again, how it was heart breaking and terrible but lovely and eye opening to fall in love with the same person all over again. then it’s the soul changing world spinning kiss where they wrap their arms around each other and never want to let go. cue forehead rest and some crying and whispered i love yous bc it still doesn’t feel real, it can’t be real, bc they’ve wanted this for longer than they’ve been willing to admit to anyone and themselves and now they have it again and it’s perfect but there is still work to be done. but it’s perfect bc it’s them. it’s joe and nicky.

- then the big (not so surprising in reality bc people have eyes) reveal to andy and quynh, and to joe and nicky’s families and they’re ofc all happy and pleased and excited for them.
