Assessment 13 and 14 : Academic Research : Narrative development for biographies and the 2 Narratives

Why i chose Juny as an animator for my animation.

-His artstyle which is simple and very cartoony yet it doesnt feel as static as normal cartoons. His animations dont stay true to the physics which adds that exaggeration. I love the comedy he introduces and the relatability in most of his videos. His character designs are simple and memorable aswell. his way of doing blocky impact frames were really satisfying and unsual as normal impact frames r more highly detailed and most of the time only seen split seconds to around 3 or 4 seconds long.

It was very fun researching on Juny. I remember watching his videos back then 2 years ago and it was suprising that he finally got into mappa studios. The effort it takes was inspiring.

Juny is a Canadian YouTuber. currently 19 years old at the time of making this research.

he is a cat person.

Juny stated in one of his videos when collaborating with RubberRoss that as a kid Juny was obedient and very matured.

Juny hasn't publicised himself alot so the only way to identify him is his iconic character aswell as the yellow scarf. He loves anime and is a die hard (hardcore) weeb. Juny's animation skits explore various artsyles aswell as the use of different animation softwares. Very comedic and cartoony with use of very dynamic story telling. He was inspired to do these animation skits by dragon ball, one piece and other famous animes. He seem to love to use the colour red alot in his videos.

Most of the time the character in his videos looks either neutral, sarcastic or sleepy so maybe in real life he is a very tired person. Perhaps he works too hard or mabye just a sleepy person.He is definitely a short person as one of his shorts had him being made fun of for his height.

Above is one of my favourite shorts he has done. The dying pan. I would love to incorporate it into my animation as an prop item.

Through his collabs he has done with other youtubers, Juny is sort of silent but a comedian at the same time. Juny also wears a yellow cape in his final video before disappearing for two whole years.

above is the final video he does. The transition from his scarf to a cape can also mean that he has finally taken the step to dive into his new career.

Throughout the videos I've seen that juny explores and animates some of his traumas from his past self. height problems to social issues. ''Deep'' was one of the most dramatic shorts Ive seen as it makes the trauma very obvious.

from the information Ive gathered so far It seems like Juny is a bit of a mischievous child. In the collaborative podcasts he has been to, Juny somtimes talks about his tomfoolery he has done as a kid for example changing the sugar and salt bottle or how he almost dropped out of school.

his animations are very short but gets his comedic plots across easily. It is also understandable even though the pacing is quick.

from the research above ive concluded to add these aspects into the animation:

Juny and his past selves: to showcase coming of age aswell as his self development as an animator.

juny OC with yellow scarf: his iconic scarf has been with his character for almost 3 years now and it must mean alot to him.

The pan: the Dying pan was one of my favourite shorts and i am going to include it in the animation as an weapon or a showpiece in the setting.

The colour themes Juny used in his videos: So it feels like an animation that would represent Juny's iconic video colours.

Juny's friends: to show his upbringing aswell as the support he has gotten throughout his life so far.

His height: which i can represent through how big the setting around him is.

anime figurines of dragon ball, one piece, gundam : to show his interests aswell the fact he worked for once piece.

2 NARRATIVE STORYBOARDs.

the first narrative was meant to give his personal development after he picked up animating. it also shows his dedication and his traumas.

A shot of the bathroom from inside focusing on the exit door. Lights turn on, Juny comes inside and looks in the mirror. (Sleepy) After a few Interactions with the mirror (there r Easter eggs like Juny's pan featured in one of his videos) he sees himself as young Juny. After a face wash Juny leaves the bathroom. Enters his room (a yellow scarf on his table, pictures of Juny and his youtube friends hung up) . he goes to the wardrobe and opens it taking a yellow cape. He puts it on and goes to the mirror again. This time he sees Juny in his prime. A face of tranquillity and nostalgia. Camera cuts to black screen with a saying "Atlas, I have become". (Using the chaotic straight line style in his videos) Juny goes chaotic as he flashes back to his videos. A hand then reaches out and taps on Juny's shoulder and says "you are bound no more" suddenly glass break effect, Juny stands and exits the door as mappa studios waits for his presence.

2. This narrative was more of a focus on his character doing something very ''juny like'' to give the feeling of nostalgia, specially his scarf as it has been with him in his character for a long time until it changed into a cape in his final animation skit.

A scarf floats around in the wind and goes inside through the window of Juny's house, Juny's hand grabs the scarf and ties it around him, and then he grabs his cape from the wardrobe, camera shot of Juny's butt squeezing in boldness. Juny wears the cape around him, Juny then grabs the pan and starts decimating and starts beating his favourite anime characters one by one. Jumps on the last ones head. Camera shot of his legs landing on the ground. At a distant the mirror is in his path. Camera rotates around Juny and the mirror once. Top to bottom view of a staredown between mirror and Juny. Juny runs into the mirror and shatters the glass. (From here it's Juny's room) Juny breaks his ankle landing on the ground next to his bed and slams himself onto the ground. He wakes up and looks at his scarf. He smiles. He wears his cape and goes out of his room.

I sat on the fluffy couch in the lounge in RHS my black fleece turtle neck tightening by the second. My thigh-high boots tickling my bare thighs, my fingers clutching my coffee.

“ Jesus Y/N you look like you’re going to kill the damn cup.” Archie laughed at me, as I snapped back to reality.

“ You okay…. You look pale?” My best friend whispered (Fashionista, self-esteem coach, etc.) Kevin placed his hand on my pale thigh. My heart jumped in excitement and my eyes were once again stuck on his constricting sweatshirt. This is so wrong

I coughed and looked away from him trying to concentrate on some random conversation Fangs had started with Archie and the others. Kevin took offense to Y/N silence. He thought maybe he had done something wrong.

Ever since Joaquin (his the last boyfriend) the only serpent friend, he had that understood him, was just him. Well, we all know what happened to him. Kevin realized the serpent’s understood and supported him like no one before, not even Betty. With dating a serpent you get to meet the others. So he meets Fangs, Ton, and Sweet Pea. Also, Y/N or as “fresh snake” as they called her at the time. But it wasn’t Joaquin had to leave when Kevin got closer with Y/N, clearly, they had a lot in common. Kevin was happy around his new friend. Y/n, on the other hand, she was happy but very confused. See she meet him when he was dating Joaquin, so she assumed he was gay. Ignorantly when Y/N saw him walk through the White Wyrm doors with Joaquin she assumed “ so not gay”.

Y/n remembers the exact day, her second day as a serpent chit chatting with Toni and see them both strut in. Kevin is taller and muscular than Joaquin. Instantly her eyes wandered to his arms and Adam’s apple that seemed to bop furiously from anxiousness. She was not gonna lie, he was extremely attractive. Her heart raced as she thought of many things she could do with that tall glass of-

“ Family…” Joaquin yelled, calling everyone’s, Kevin seemed extremely nervous now,” This is Kevin. My boyfriend.” I gulped eyes wide.” Well, maybe he is gay?” Toni snickered at me as she saw my reaction. I rolled my eyes and walked away from the now growing group surrounding Joaquin and his new hot boyfriend. The night was full of small talk and laughter with J’s new boyfriend.

As I decided that this whole love Fest going on was spoiling my drinks and mood, I plopped and started to make my way out saying a quick goodbye. Yes, I am bitter. Yes, I hate to love and anything to do with public affection. It makes my blood boil, okay, maybe jealousy makes me bitter but doesn’t everyone? Back to the story!

When I was on my way out Joaquin ran to me with Kevin following along.

“ Hey, Y/N wait up!” I rolled my eyes, but plastered a fake smile and turned around. Trust me I was done with J rubbing into our faces how hot his new Northside boyfriend.

“Hey j!” I exclaimed

“ I wanted to introduce you to my boyfriend!” I gulped and looked up at Kevin’s buff and tall figure. I swear I could be drooling.

“ H-hi” I coughed and extended my hand towards him and he gladly took it.

“ It’s really nice to meet you! Joaquin talks great things about you!” His soft but deep voice stated as his smile lit up the room. God, why was I not born a man!

“ Thank you.” I blushed, but realized it was wrong for me to feel this way. “ Well, see you around guys I’m going to head out.” They nodded, and I turned towards the doors and out into the chilly night.

I think we all know what happened to Joaquin and how he deciding to run away from hid problems were going to help. Kevin was devastated and who was there to console him? Me out of all the people. Jughead soon, then took orders into his own hand to rile and control the serpents. Once we settled into Riverdale high things got rocky with the Northsiders trying to accept us, but Kevin helped me out. We both knew the serpents and Nortsiders were both jealous of each other which made us the outsiders of the drama. Our friendship grew so immense that I didn’t realize until I was having sleepovers and mini-dates almost every day. What I did know was the way his smile made my knees weak, how my heartbeat raced as our eyes met in the hallways. Or the butterflies the rumble in me when we work out together and he takes his sweaty shirt off. I would make myself deny the aching feelings every day telling myself He’s your gay best friend it can’t be like that.

Now do you see why this friendship is hurting me? Sitting there watching as my friends talked and laughed and me bubbling with anger. They could have whoever they wanted yet I couldn’t. The knot in my throat, killing me.

“ I have to go.” I took my backpack and stormed out, leaving everyone shocked and silent.

I ignored everyone’s texts and comments. I decided I need some time alone and away from Kevin. So I hit up Reggie in look for a house party to attend to get drunk and make out with a stranger so the pain would go away. He replied quickly with an address and time. Bingo.

I dressed in a black lace bodysuit with black ripped jeans and red heels. My long black hair hugging around my cleavage, I felt like the hottest bitch on the block. By 10 pm I walked through the mansion of a random football player packed with people, music loud as could be, kegs around the house and chanting of boys mixed in also. I saw Reg and Instantly walked over.

“ Damn, Y/N you’re looking hot!” He chirped as he gave me a hug, let me just say Reggie has been nice to me since I saved his ass from his abusive father. I threatened to call the cops on his father as I showed him the pictures of Reggie’s bruises that I could easily turn him in with. “ Thank you!” I chirped in amusement.

“ Hey the group was asking for you they said you-”

“ Wait!” I spat, the group? They were invited also! I panicked and started to look around furiously.

“ Yeah, I invited them!” I glared at him and stormed into the huge kitchen and found as a bottle of vodka and took a huge gulp from it. By the third gulp, I felt myself become light as a feather. I impulsively walked towards Reggie again, he was with our group of friends talking, Kevin was listening also while he glanced around looking for someone. My drunk ass butted in, “ Hey guys what a coincidence. “ Before I let them answer I wrapped my fingers at the collar of Reggie’s button-down and kissed him hard. Adrenaline pumping and red lipstick smeared on Reggie’s lips. I pulled him closer and as I open one eye I saw as they stood again astonished, and Kevin seemed confused and hurt?

“ C’mon Reggie..” I whispered and I pulled him towards me as he dazedly followed.

We instantly found a wall close by where minimal people passed through. My lips tangling onto his, my hands grabbing his hair as soft pants left me.

I pressed his chest, back disconnecting our lips, “Let’s get more booze!” I squealed, but as I took a step I almost fell. Reggie sighed and help me up.

“ I think we’ve had enough tonight.” I whined and tried kissing him, because well I’m drunk and horny. Reggie knew he couldn’t take advantage of her friend like this and the real person she loved and wanted was her best friend, Kevin. What Y/N didn’t know was that Reggie and Kevin had a talk 3 weeks ago where Kevin confessed he is bisexual but was scared to show his love and sexual feelings towards a girl since he mostly felt that towards boys. Reggie needed that to realize Y/N and Kevin were too scared and confused to let each other feel. Reggie carried Y/N as she sniffled and whimpered as she seemed to mumble something about ‘fuck love’ or ‘ I hate him’. Reggie saw an annoyed Kevin but his expression soon changed as he saw Y/N drunk and in his arms.

“ What the hell happened?” Kevin growled as he took Y/N from Reggie.

“ Dude, relax, nothing! She’s really drunk and I think she needs you more than me.” Reggie calmly stated. Kevin gulped and saw my drunk state.

“ You! Kev..” I slurred and felt my eyes droop in slumber.

Next thing I knew I woke up in Kevin’s room, I looked at the clock and it was 2 am. I rubbed my eyes and saw him sleeping on his computer chair with a small blanket wrapped around himself. It wasn’t the first time she’s seen him peacefully sleep. I felt great, I thanked God that I didn’t drink more or I would have felt like hell. I felt guilty for leaving him hanging and lowkey was panicking if I was drunk enough to tell him how I felt. To avoid the conversation I slid off his bed and picked my heels up as I tiptoed out.

“ So you’re just gonna leave?” I heard a gruff voice. I cringed and turned around to see him sitting in the same spot the blanket in his hands now.

“ I can-”

“ Please do… I don’t know what’s going on Y/N? What happened to us?” His words hit an emotional string in my heart, which led me to tear up.

“ I’m sorry- I wish I could explain.” I sat at the edge of his bed avoiding his sight.

“ You act like we never tell each other everything!” His voice boomed making me flinch.

“ That’s the thing! I can’t fall in love with my best friend!” I yelled back tears falling down freely, my face became red from embarrassment. Kevin looked down his face matching hers.

“ I know you don’t-“

“I do, though.” Then there was silence as I looked him dead in the eyes. It felt like a dreamlike, this whole situation was merely a figment of my imagination as it’s been in the past.

“ Y/N…. I’m bisexual.” He sighed, his eyes watering. I took some steps to be face to face with him touching his face in awe.

“But-“ I suddenly feel out of breath. I racked my brain at the many times Kevin missed Joaquin and his past flings.

“ I never told anyone… because I was never sure... My first crush was a boy and well, I never understood the whole labels of gay or bi or pan..” I intensely watched as he also racked his brain to explain his feelings and thought that he stored away, “ I put my dad through hell when I came out as gay and know that I know I’m bi… he’s gonna hate me and you! I was scared to lose you!” I proclaimed almost begging. I smiled at him taking his hands in mine.

“ Neither will your dad or meleave you.” It seemed to comfort him enough that he sighed in relief. But I would be lying if I didn’t say this whole argument and emotional connection brought my raging hormones to an all-time high. I went in to hug him and he wrapped his buff arms around also.

“ So… we’re gonna ignore how you confess you loved me.” Kevin teased which made me hide my face like a five-year-old.

“ It's not my fault your extremely hot Kevin!” I squealed as I pulled away from him. He chuckled and threw me on the bed, making me squeal and bounce slightly. We both lay there on his bed, staring at each other with silly grins on our face.

“ I love you.” He said

“ I love you too.” I chirped, the butterflies rumbling in me again. His eyes seemed to wander down to the outfit I still had on that almost caused a nip slip right in front of him. I blushed madly and instantly shot up to cover myself. His knees dipped the bed behind me, his hands caressing the back of my neck as they ghosted on the black spaghetti strap of the lace bodysuit. My eyes closing in anticipation waiting for his hands to touch more of me. His hand, bringing my hair to onside as he lowered his face to my neck, his hot breath tickling it.

Stand with Hong Kong

(I realized that there are posts related to Hong Kong in Tumblr (thank you so much for caring!!!). So I, as a local Hongkonger, decide to write up this Q&A to give you a clearer picture, and hopefully some useful advice if you are traveling to Hong Kong recently. It is a bit long and probably full of grammatical mistakes, but I really wish you could take some time to read it and get to know more about this fight for freedom going on in this city in this summer.)

Q: I heard that the Extradition Bill is withdrawn, does it mean everything is over?

A: No. First of all, the Chief Executive Ms Carrie Lam announced the government will withdraw the Bill after the resume of Legislative Council in October. So the Bill is currently still officially on the agenda to be Second Reading.

In addition, after three months of social unrest, the situation has developed to a stage that it is no longer only about the Bill. Police brutality, distrust of the HKSAR government, the erosion of freedom and autonomy of Hong Kong, all of these are the underlying causes of this social movement.

The Sino-British Joint Declaration promised the capitalist system and its way of life in Hong Kong would remain unchanged for a period of 50 years until 2047. However, there are signs of erosion of this promise in recently years including but not limited to the cases of disqualifying the elected Legislative Council members and denying the eligibility of individuals in participation of elections (Read more here). And Ms Carrie Lam even claimed, as the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, that she doesn’t have a choice to resign even if she wants to (the soundtrack is here).

Not only the HKSAR Government refused to withdraw the Bill even after millions of people demonstrated on street voicing their clear opposition to the Bill, but the escalation of police violence towards the protesters and even citizens, without being hold accountable or even put under an independent investigation, and the spreading of white terror in business sector also fuel Hongkongers’ fear on the loss of the core values of Hong Kong.

The Pandora Box is opened, the withdrawal of the Bill now is already too little and too late.

Q: What are the Five Demands? Why you Hongkongers insist “not one less”?

A: The Five Demands are:

Withdrawal of the Extradition Bill

Independent probe into the use of force by police

Amnesty for arrested protesters

A halt to categorizing the protests as riots

The implementation of universal suffrage

After three months of non-stop protests, 9 people committed suicide; over 1,100 people are arrested, a number of them are charged with rioting and facing up to 10 years of imprisonment; countless of Hongkongers were injured, because of the excessive forces used by the police as well as the mob attacks (which the one happened in Yuen Long was suspected to be police in cahoots with the gangsters since the police turned their back to the attack and only a few people were arrested despite of the fact that most of them are unmasked and can be identified) ; several people are facing permanent injuries; police fires teargas and rubber bullets whenever and wherever they want and beat up innocent citizens; white terror is spreading in companies and employees were fired for voicing their opposition and criticism to the government and police (yeah I would recommend you not to take Cathay Pacific Airline anymore since they literally put the political agenda above everything).

How can we accept the withdrawal of the Bill be enough.

And it is in these three month’s of nightmare that Hongkongers realize Hong Kong is no longer the city we once know, that if we cannot make a change in the political and social systems to ensure that the government is truly responsible to its people, things like this will happen again and again. And one day it will truly be the end of Hong Kong.

Q: I read that you keep mentioning the police brutality, why? What have they done?

A: I am afraid that I have a long list for you to choose from. But in short, the force using by the police for “crowd control” (I quote it because they have fired teargas and rubber bullets to protesters without leaving a route for them to leave, more than once) have been escalating in these three months.

Protesters are beaten up even they are already been arrested and under control; Evidence are planted (in this video, a sharpened bamboo stick was put into the arrested protester backpack by the police. The video is in Cantonese but you can see clearly that the bamboo stick was NOT in the backpack before; the police commented the action as “not done perfectly but acceptable” in the later press conference) and female were harassed.

Protesters and citizens were called “cockroaches” by the police. What is worse is that the police starts beating innocent passengers and passerby indiscriminately. A teenager passerby was beaten in Tai Po Market just days ago. (video here) He was then arrested and found head injury, left shoulder and finger broken.

And while claiming complains can be filed to the Complaints and Internal Investigations Branch of the Police Force, police officers refuse to show their Police Warrant Card nor disclose their identity number (which is required by the Police General Orders), which makes complains on individuals impossible.

Q: Sooooooo, do you mean the Hongkongers are fighting for independence?

A: No. Not at all. We are fighting for human rights, freedom and democracy, and the institution that ensures people who are responsible for diminishing these values would be stopped and hold accountable. Independence is never on the table.

Q: I am planning/going to Hong Kong, is it still safe?

A: Largely yes. Hongkongers still go to school and work and it is largely peaceful most of the time. But please remember to pay attention to the advice, messages and updates from your government, and be prepared that more time maybe needed to travel from and to the airport if there is a protest is scheduled near or at the Hong Kong International Airport. (Well yeah the Airport Express had stopped servicing in half of its stations and the police stopped and checked almost each and every bus to the airport to check for protesters in the last weekend. Please don’t be surprise if they do it again.)

As a local, I strongly advise you to avoid going near the protest areas, police stations, metro stations (the hottest zone in these days is the Prince Edward station because police stormed the station on 31 Aug and it was closed for two days, which is extremely rare in Hong Kong. There is rumors that some citizens were beaten to death) at night and during weekends, and avoid dressing in all black. These are areas that situation can go bad real quick and police would not hesitate to fire teargas, rubber bullets and beanbag rounds. There already been many cases of injury and one of the first-aid volunteer workers was even nearly shot to blindness by the police.

Be warned that metro stations can be closed in very short notice and police would charge into the stations and trains if they deem necessary. And sadly, yes, it is proven on 11 Aug in Kwai Fong Station 31 Aug in Prince Edward Station that they would fire teargas into the metro stations (Newsclip here) and attack citizens indiscriminately. (There is video here recorded on that night, police are beating and pepper-spraying people inside the train which still have citizens traveling on board.) So leave the station IMMEDIATELY when the announcement of the close of station is made.

But it is still safe in a large extent to come to Hong Kong, and Hongkongers always welcome travelers from around the world. Just please keep an eye on the news and updates and always be cautious. (And if you would like to read/watch local news in English, RTHK would be a good choice.)

Be careful and stay safe.

Q: Okay, I understand the situation better now. But why should I care?

A: Hong Kong is long an international city and one of the most important financial centers in the world (you may heard of the “Nylonkong”, placing Hong Kong alongside with New York and London as three of the important financial centers in the world). Hong Kong promise investors of free trade, financial exchanges as well as rule of law for years.

And more importantly, Hong Kong has long been a gateway between China and the Western countries, and also a showcase of freedom, rule of law and human rights. If even Hong Kong, an international city that receive so much international attention and interests, thus pressure to its government to uphold these values, unable to safeguard them, then who can?

Q: What then? What is happening now?

A: Protests are scheduled on weekends and even weekdays night in different districts. The Hongkongers are still fighting all the way we can. We will not back down.

Q: But I am not a Hongkonger nor live in Hong Kong, how can I help?

A: Thank you for caring for us!!! Please, please give us your attention, and let your society and government know that you care. International attention is one of the main reasons that the Chinese army is not (yet) deployed and the city is not (yet) in bloodshed or its people being locked up in concentration camps.

If you are a US citizen, please support the passing of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which will be discussed in US soon. The Act would require the Secretary of State to review annually on the level of autonomy of Hong Kong and determine if the special treatment afforded to Hong Kong by the U.S. Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992 is still justified. Individuals who are responsible of the diminishing the human rights and freedom can be punished by denying access to US or freezing of asserts in US. This would put huge pressure on the HKSAR Governments by sending a clear message that the international is watching and they would face consequences if they do wrong.

The Immortal Soldier?

Or “Is Jack Morrison semi-‘Reaperized’?”

Disclaimer: I don’t fully believe this idea myself. However, I’m writing it down because it’s haunting me (ba-dum-tssh), and because I think it’s worth putting out in the open. A lot of it relies on other hypothesis - which may or may not be true - and thinly-connected context clues, so again, I don’t know if this idea even really has solid ground to stand on? But anyways. TL, DR: post-fall Jack Morrison is basically “Retribution era” Gabriel Reyes, possibly with wraithy powers and all. However, he may not realize he has those powers, or he may be missing a “step” in that “unlocks” them (e.g. Moira’s involvement). Different types of circumstantial evidence can be interpreted as pointing towards Jack being very “hard to kill.”

This idea relies on the concepts I put forth in the first half of “Long Reasons Not to Trust Moira in Retribution.” A quick recap:

1. Hypothesis/semi-confirmed?: Gabriel Reyes gained some sort of “Reaper” powers and his “Reaper” medical condition from SEP.

The basis for this is drawn from a few things. The first - his “Soldier ID: 24″ folder is found in Moira’s present-day Genetics lab in Oasis. The second - no one in “Retribution” (aka McCree, Genji, and Moira) are surprised by Gabriel’s “in game” powers (Wraith, Shadow Step, Death Blossom), and the trailer for the event shows Gabriel using Death Blossom freely.

The third - Reaper’s “Soldier: 24″ skin has no change in abilities (i.e. none of the effects or voicelines are altered (see things like Witch Mercy, Cultist Zen, Dragon Sym, etc)) and appears to represent Gabriel during his “experimental state” in SEP.

The fourth - the wording on Reaper’s hero profile is “intentional,” specifically the parts about Reaper being around for “decades.”

However, as I argued in “Long Reasons,” this did not necessarily mean that Gabriel was “healthy” or even immortal.

2. Hypothesis: though Gabriel Reyes had some level of “Reaper” powers/condition from SEP, he was not completely immune to being hurt or getting scars. However, Gabriel might not have been aging correctly either.

This is taken from the idea that Gabriel’s appearance has small changes over the course of thirty years but that it does not change nearly as intensely as his similiarly-aged friends.

Gabriel does accumulate scars, and possibly some wrinkles. However, unlike Ana, who is only two years older than him and gains wrinkles and grey-to-white hair, Gabriel appears to age relatively less significantly.

This is semi-confirmed by an interaction in “Retribution” between Gabriel and McCree:

McCree: Did you even consider what was gonna happen before you pulled the trigger?

Reyes: I made a decision - I’ll deal with the consequences.

McCree: What, like gettin’ the four of us killed?

Reyes: That’s not going to happen.

McCree believes that Gabriel can die during the events of “Retribution.” And Gabriel probably can die.

“Hard to kill” =/= “immortal”

Gabriel’s pre-fall “Reaper powers/condition” make him “hard to kill”, but he can still be wounded, still accumulate scars, and still probably die.

This appears to be in direct contrast with:

3. Hypothesis: Post-Fall “Reaper” has become effectively immortal.

Reaper can still feel pain. We know this. He appears to even struggle with healing injuries sometimes.

(Personally, I think he’s faking this scene in “Infiltration,” because he wants to create a opportunity for Sombra to blackmail Katya. But for the sake of discussion, let’s say he’s possibly genuinely in pain here.)

However, Reaper is able to take the full force of the Tesla Cannon without dying. He 1v1s a new Volskaya mech in “Infiltration” without serious side effects.

In “Old Soldiers,” the sleep dart doesn’t affect Reaper at all, and while the sleep dart isn’t lethal, it does indicate - along with the events of “Recall” and “Infiltration” - that “Reaper” might now be much more immune to damage than he was pre-Fall.

One of Reaper’s respawn lines in the game says:

This is my curse...

Which seems to imply that his curse is being unable to die.

This goes along with the idea that Reaper in the present-day is working with Moira for a “cure” for his condition.

And that this may be the basis for their current working relatioship - Moira gets to continue her research on Gabriel, and Gabriel “eventually” gets a cure from it.

This is related to:

4. Hypothesis/semi-confirmed: before the fall, Gabriel recruited Moira specifically to help him try to solve his “pre-fall Reaper condition” before it got “worse” (and uh, we know that didn’t happen).

“She was recruited by Gabriel Reyes to be a member of Blackwatch. And uh, during that time she had relationships with the Blackwatch crew - McCree, Genji - they all have their own sort of likes and dislikes for each other. Reyes wanted someone could help advise him on, uh, some matters of genetics that he was, uh, interested in, shall we say.” - Michael Chu, 3:47 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=227)

Moira is already conducting research on Gabriel at the time of “Retribution.” This is indicated by her Biotic Grasp and Fade - which were “created” by Moira when she repurposed parts of Gabriel’s biodata for her own artificial means. Moira has a couple of interactions in “Retribution” which imply that she thinks certain “changes” may be occurring in Gabriel (though he himself does not reveal if these “changes” are actually happening, or if he is aware of them happening at the time).

However, what appears to be implied by the timeline of Overwatch is that Gabriel’s medical transformation into “post-fall Reaper” (not his actual persona or motivations, but his physical state of being) needed more than just Moira’s experiments to “unlock”:

It needed something much bigger to induce the full “Reaper” potential in him.

Reaper, upon respawning: That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

Different types of stressors and trauma may activate or deactivate the phenotypical expression of genes - this occurs in real life, and, since Blizzard is using stuff like “enhancements”, “nanobiology”, and “hard light technology” as “firm science fiction” elements to explain more “magical” plot devices (e.g. immortality, resurrection, teleporters, talking gorillas, etc), it’s possible that they’re using this concept (albeit very loosely) to explain Gabriel’s final medical transformation into “Reaper”.

This aligns with Reaper’s own explanation for what happened to him (although I’m leaning more and more towards this moment as being a “mixed truth” than a genuine explanation from him):

Setting aside the debate on if Reaper actually blames Soldier: 76 or not, he tells Ana that his “suffering” transformed him into “this thing”. We know that Gabriel is “the same” from “Retribution” to “Uprising,” leaving only one (known) major event that he could be referencing here: the explosion of the Swiss Base, which he and Jack were caught in.

We don’t know the “exact ratio” of “SEP experimenting” to “Moira experimenting” to “explosion” that creates the “perfect mixture” to result in post-fall Reaper, so yes, one of these things could be more “impactful” on his condition than the others. But the explosion having a significant impact on transforming him from “hard to kill” to “effectively immortal” aligns with a lot of the pieces that we already know or have clues about.

Now -

The reason I bring this all up -

Is because Jack Morrison has become very similar to pre-fall Gabriel Reyes in personality.

Soldier: 76: I don’t play by the rules anymore.

Soldier: 76: You ain't seen me angry.

Soldier: 76: I didn't start this war... But I'm damn well gonna finish it.

Also stuff like:

Moira: You did what needed to be done, Gabriel. Don’t apologize. Gabriel: I never have, and I don’t intend to start now. Someone has to be the one to get things done.

Soldier: 76: I'm just doing my job. Soldier: 76: Save the medals, I've had my fill. Soldier: 76, killing an enemy Reaper: Someone had to do it.

McCree: Is this what we’ve become, Gabriel? Gabriel: Blackwatch has always had one purpose: to do the real work of keeping the world safe. I thought you had the stomach for it. Looks like I was wrong.

Soldier: 76: Think you can do my job, do you... Winston: Someone has to.

Winston: Someone's going to put a stop to your illegal activities. Soldier: 76: You're one to talk! You and your friends are breaking the law, same as me.

Soldier: 76, killing an enemy Winston: Your hesitation is your weakness.

But Soldier: 76 also has a number of...interesting lines.

Lines that I initially thought were just “flavor text” - you know, stuff that gives us an indication of his personality, his motivations, his ideas, etc.

But can also be interpreted...differently.

Ana: Seems like neither of us like being dead very much. Soldier: 76: Old soldiers are hard to kill.

Soldier: 76: Old soldiers never die... And they don't fade away...

Soldier: 76: Aren't you supposed to be dead? Reaper: Didn't take.

Soldier: 76: One of these days someone is gonna to put an end to you. Reaper: I invite them to try.

(The last one is interesting because Reaper appears to imply that “trying to end him” is effectively impossible.)

Because, I mean...read another way -

It sounds a lot like Soldier: 76 is talking about himself, either directly, as in the interaction with Ana, or more indirectly, as in the interactions with Reaper.

Again. I get it. Like I said, I don’t fully believe this myself.

But let me try and walk through some of the steps here:

1. Pre-explosion Jack Morrison ages “normally.”

Or at least, he ages about the same as Reinhardt, Ana, and Torbjörn.

“Golden Era” Jack Morrison

“Retribution” Jack

“Uprising” Jack

His hair is fading from blonde to white, he’s accumulating wrinkles, etc. He is, however, missing two major “features” on his face that define him as “post-Fall Soldier: 76″:

His scars.

However -

Gabriel’s “pre-fall Reaper” condition never prevented him from gaining scars.

And though it is “flavor text”, Soldier: 76 has a voiceline for his Daredevil and Stunt Rider skins that says:

Bones heal, pain is temporary; scars look good.

Which is a modified version of a quote from Evel Knievel.

2. Post-explosion Jack might not be aging correctly.

Ana: For a man of your years, you're looking pretty good, Jack. Soldier: 76: Well, all that stuff they pumped into me has to be good for something.

Prior to “Retribution,” I took this interaction to be - well - just a cute little discussion between Ana and Soldier: 76, but when it was revealed that Jack was the youngest member of the original Strike Team, this interaction...made me pause.

Why would Ana say that to someone who is likely 5-10 years younger than her?

At the time of Recall, Jack Morrison could be between the ages of 48 to 55-56-ish. We know he is younger than Gabriel when he enlists in the U.S. military and joins SEP, which automatically makes him younger than Ana and Reinhardt. He is likely younger than Torbjörn (as Torb is only one year younger than Gabriel), which makes him the youngest member of the original team.

And look, I love Jack and think he’s a great character and attractive for having gone through a lifetime of war and fighting.

But let’s not kid ourselves.

If this man is 48, that’s a hard 48.

If he’s in his early-to-mid-50′s, sure, that might be more...understandable. But even then, you have characters like Reinhardt (who Ana also compliments), Mercy, Moira, Doomfist, Hanzo - all of whom are aging “gracefully” (if you want to call it that) for being in their late 30′s to late 40′s (or Reinhardt in his 60′s).

I mean, if Jack is 48, that means he’s the same age as her:

And Moira has very few of the changes Jack has.

(Please, I’m not looking for a discussion on character designs here. If you want that conversation, there’s plenty of other posts or people to discuss with.) “But Jack lived a stressful life! And he survived an explosion! Of course he’s aged more heavily - that takes a toll.”

Which is -

Different types of stressors and trauma may activate or deactivate the phenotypical expression of genes

Precisely my point.

I’ve seen a lot of people make the hypothesis that Jack Morrison may have had a different type of supersoldier “enhancement” injection serum than Gabriel Reyes. And that’s logically a very good argument - after all, Jack never shows signs of being “wraithy”. He doesn’t teleport, he gets hurt, he doesn’t have any sort of “lifedrain” ability, etc.

But we also don’t know if any of that - the serum, the “non-wraithy” stuff - is true or not.

Because when Ana remarks about his age and appearance, Jack credits the injections for “being good” for that.

And when Ana herself comments that Jack is “so hardheaded that [he] wouldn’t know how to die” and that Jack is “lucky to be alive”, Jack himself comments with:

(Ostensibly, he’s quoting Gabriel here, who was once Jack’s “old boss”)

Again, it appears that Jack is merely copying Gabriel’s pre-fall personality, or “evolving” into being a renegade and rogue-like character, just like Gabriel was during “Retribution.”

But it is intriguing that Jack credits the SEP injections with his...current “hard-to-kill-ness” and his seemingly “good” appearance.

3. Jack survives a lot of stuff.

Canonically, Jack survives: 1) the Swiss Base explosion, 2) fighting the Helix guards at Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, 3) fighting Los Muertos members in “Hero,” 4) a grenade thrown by a Los Muertos member in “Hero”, 5) a literal shotgun blast to his lower back (?), and then 6) a fistfight with Reaper.

Yes, he gets hurt.

But “hard to kill” =/= “immortal”.

Soldier: 76: Old soldiers are hard to kill.

“Ana heals him in ‘Old Soldiers,’ though!”

You’re right, she absolutely does. And based on gameplay, Soldier heals himself by his Biotic Fields.

But we also see him literally “walk off” a grenade blast in “Hero.” And he appears to survive the Swiss Base explosion with only scars.

And while he never appears to use “wraithy” powers like pre-fall Gabriel, it might be that Jack isn’t fully aware of what’s happening to him.

Gabriel has had “decades” to explore his “Reaper condition.” He may have even had help “training” his abilities in SEP. Jack, on the other hand, probably went through the program thinking he was just “another supersoldier” and not a...ghost soldier...fighter...warrior person like Gabriel (or whatever SEP wanted to describe them as - “ravagers”, maybe?).

After all, Jack’s own description of SEP is very brief in “Uprising.” Initially, he seems to indicate that the program “tried everything” in a desperate bid to end the war - including likely conducting experiments like the kind that produced pre-fall “Reaper” - but that other things (“politics, mismanagement, egos”) seemed to be the downfall of SEP and other U.S. military endeavours, thus pushing Gabriel and Jack to agree to join Overwatch together.

And in “Retribution”, we know that Gabriel appears to think that Jack can die.

Hence Gabriel’s whole motivation for trying to “get a jump start” on Talon by getting intel from Antonio.

Gabriel believed that an explosion could severely hurt Jack -

Or do worse to him.

And yet -

Not only does that not actually happen, Jack appears...almost... stronger than before, emerging “from the ashes” six years later as “Soldier: 76″, equipped with the Tactical Visor and a new, updated version of the Heavy Pulse Rifle.

4. In “another life,” Jack is “immortal.”

“Junkenstein’s Revenge” occupies a very...odd space in the Overwatch universe. It is, arguably, the only “canon AU” made by the developers themselves. By that I mean - not only is the “story itself” canon to the world of Overwatch, as a story that Reinhardt is literally telling his friends during one Halloween:

But the events that occur within the story have obvious and clear parallels to the “canon world of Overwatch.”

Each of the main characters - both the “heroes” and the “villains” in both years - correspond to “real characters” in Overwatch. Moreover, all the “roles” that they play in the story have “canon costumes”/skins (with only Reinhardt and Genji currently missing theirs).

For example:

Mercy, who is dressed as a witch at the Halloween party, is the witch in the story:

Torbjörn is a Viking, Ana is a “pirate alchemist,” McCree is a vampire/demon hunter (Van Helsing, to be exact), Junkrat is the scientist, Roadhog is the monster, etc etc.

The story gets expanded in Year 2, where Widowmaker, Zenyatta, Genji, and Torbjörn all become playable, and it “canonizes” the Huntress and Cultist skins for Widowmaker and Zenyatta as being their “in-story roles”. Genji, who we don’t see up-close, will likely get a “demon wanderer” skin to match Hanzo’s in a future event.

But there is a character who doesn’t match his “canon costume” with his “Junkenstein role”:

And before people are like, “That’s just his Daredevil skin!” - I know. I’m aware of that.

However, I also know that they seriously considered making “Old Jack in his Daredevil outfit” a real thing for him:

Of those seven pieces of concept art (I’m counting both Reins as one), five of those eventually became fully-fledged skins. Reinhardt’s will likely show up in a future event.

However, they got to the point where they actually made a mock-up of “Old Jack in his Daredevil costume.”

And yet.

They chose this.

Yes, I do believe the Immortal skin is an homage to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. After all, “Junkenstein’s Revenge” as a whole references a number of horror stories or Halloween ideas - everything from the Headless Horseman to Van Helsing to “Frankenstein” itself.

But if the Soldier skin is a reference to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, why call it “Immortal?” Why not call it “Zombie” or “Ghoul” or something?

As I said earlier, “Junkenstein’s Revenge” has a lot of parallels to the canon world of Overwatch, and the story around each of the “roles” has connections to their “canon versions”.

For example:

Ana: What reason brings you to travel so far from home? Hanzo: I was banished from my home for taking my brother's life. I can never return.

Ana: I once met a man who could summon a dragon as you do. Hanzo: Impossible. Only my clan possesses the skill. My brother could, but he is dead.

McCree: What's home like for you, Archer? Hanzo: A village, high atop a hill. There are cherry blossoms in the spring. I miss it dearly.

Soldier: 76: A soldier, an alchemist, an archer and an oddity. A motley group we have assembled here. Ana: Just as it has always been. You attract strange companions.

Hanzo: I sense that you and the Soldier have history together. Ana: Indeed. And much of it unhappy. Or Ana: This is not our first battle together. And not the last. Unless he does something foolish.

Interestingly, many characters often break the fourth wall (or at least attempt to hit it):

Reinhardt, if some of the heroes start dying: The heroes' defense was not enough, as one of their numbers fell. If only they had a shield to stand behind. Reinhardt: Oh, how the heroes lamented their need for a shield, realizing too late they had taken for granted its protection.

McCree: You're not bad with a bow, but don't you think it's a little old fashioned? Hanzo: Perhaps there is still a future for anachronisms.

McCree: You seem awful familiar. You sure we haven't met before? Soldier: Maybe in another life.

While all the characters have lines and interactions pointing to their “canon versions”, Soldier in particular has many - almost all of his interactions refer to his “canon story” or refer to his “canon relationships.”

Soldier: It's time to finish this fight, old friend. Ana: Let us hope we have the strength to see it through

Ana: If we survive the night, this should be our last battle. Soldier: No, I cannot rest until we have justice! (for what...or for whom?)

Hanzo: What sort of monster do you think the Reaper is? Soldier: The worst kind there is - a wicked man. McCree: So, where are you from? Soldier: I don't stay in one place for too long, came from a town called Bloomington, Indiana

Soldier: In my younger days I'd have hardly broken a sweat, but those days are over.

Related to that is the subplot that the “Junkenstein version” of the “Reaper” knew Soldier and the Alchemist at one point in time:

Once a man, the Reaper retained no trace of his former self.

Rumor said that the Reaper had betrayed his former comrades, and was thusly cursed. (eliminated by Ana) The Alchemist slew the Reaper, feeling a moment of sadness for the man she had once known. (eliminated by Soldier: 76) The Soldier struck down the Reaper, and hoped that it would be for the last time.

However, Soldier expresses an...interesting sentiment when he kills Reaper in “Junkenstein’s Revenge”:

Soldier, eliminates Reaper: At last, the Reaper's curse is lifted.

From both “the canon story of Overwatch” and “Junkenstein’s Revenge,” we see that Soldier: 76 in “both modes” considers it his duty to both fight the Reaper and free him from his “curse.” In “both modes,” this means killing him.

I’ve seen a lot of the fan idea that “the Immortal Soldier” is a human thrall or some sort of vampire (based predominantly on Reaper’s second Halloween skin, “Dracula”). While it isn’t a bad idea (and I enjoy it, personally), that’s not actually “canon” to the story of Junkenstein’s Revenge.

In fact, Soldier’s “story” in Junkenstein’s Revenge is almost identical to his “canon story”:

McCree: You don't seem like someone who'd put his faith in alchemy. Soldier: You have to believe in something. May as well be the thing that keeps you alive. McCree: You ask me, you pump something full of these chemicals, electricity and whatnot, that's not a man - that's a monster. Soldier: Maybe so, or maybe they're not as different as you'd think.

In the “Junkenstein’s Revenge universe”, the Immortal Soldier is alive because he himself has been through some sort of alchemical experiment. McCree’s lines about “[pumping] something full of these chemicals, electricity, and whatnot” is very similiar to not only this:

Ana: For a man of your years, you're looking pretty good, Jack. Soldier: 76: Well, all that stuff they pumped into me has to be good for something.

But also incredibly similiar to this:

“That’s not a man - that’s a monster.”

And Soldier’s remark?

��Maybe so, or maybe they’re not as different as you’d think.”

In fact, now that Moira is part of the game, I’m super interested in seeing how they evolve the Halloween event for the third year, or if we’ll get some sort of new “canon AU-style” story that incorporates her and Brigitte into the event. Moira very much fulfills the “canon role” of the “Witch” in the world of Overwatch, moreso than Mercy does, and the fact that Moira canonically hold the power of “Reaper’s cure” over Reaper does imply that certain aspects of the Reaper subplot in “Junkenstein’s Revenge” have parallels to the canon story. It will be exciting to see how Moira is integrated into future Halloween events.

I’m also very interested to see how characters like the Soldier and Alchemist “evolve” in their roles in relation to Moira.

But that’s for the future.

For now, Soldier in “Junkenstein’s Revenge” is...semi-immortal. Much like the other heroes - demons, vampires, cultist...monk...robots... - the Immortal Soldier can still die, and he can still get hurt. But the implication that he doesn’t age correctly, or won’t “die of natural causes” is...telling.

Like I said, I’m not sure how much I actually believe the idea as a whole. But I do think there are odd bits and pieces that point to it being plausible, or something that could become a plot-point later in Overwatch’s story. Jack being “hard to kill” has worked out as “convenient plot armor” when the story calls for him to get injured or fight someone, but it could evolve into something more...complex. Again, the fact that Moira is seemingly in the process of making a “cure” for Gabriel’s “post-fall Reaper condition” could have a lot of impacts on Gabriel’s decision-making, his motivations, and those who are affected by them -

Jack, in particular.

Jack is the only other known character who has gone through the same “Soldier Enhancement Program” as Gabriel. He’s one of the main characters guiding Gabriel’s motivations at the time of “Retribution.” He’s the only other known character to have survived the same “Swiss Base explosion” as Gabriel, who became the fully-fledged “Reaper” (e.g. effectively immortal) after that. The same event left Jack with what appears to be only scars, but otherwise, he continues to fight very well. Post-fall Jack has a number of personality and motivational comparisons to “Retribution-era” Gabriel, including a desire for enacting “retribution” on those who wronged Overwatch and a seemingly “hard-to-kill” physiology. And in a “canon AU” story, Jack’s role is that of an “immortal soldier,” who may have some...similarities with the “monsters” in the story that he isn’t totally sharing with his comrades.

We know Jack’s canon goal is to find the conspiracy that brought down Overwatch, and implement retributive justice against them.

But is that his only goal?

We will have to see.

360 controller works but, not in darkness II So i'm using big picture mode with my controller just fine but, i play darkness 2 the 360 controller doesn't work. The options menu shows support for it, it works great in other games but, i get nothing in darkness 2.

What is perhaps most interesting about The Darkness, is that it started as comic book back in 1996 (It's actually quite good, and anyone further interested in the story and Jackie should check them out. But be warned, they are even more explicit and gruesome than the game). The comics got a makeover in 2002, and still remain successful. In 2007 Starbreeze Studios (of Chronicles of Riddick fame) developed a game based on the comic books, also named The Darkness. Sadly, this game was console exclusive and never made its way to PC or Mac. The first game's story is briefly covered in an opening flashback and should be paid attention to as it highly relates to what is going on in the second game.

Yes, The Darkness 2 is now out on Mac as of a few days ago thanks to the efforts of Transgaming and published again by 2K (And is of course available at GameTreeMac, as well as Steamplay). However, Digital Extremes developed the 2nd game, not Starbreeze Studios. How the two compare Mac gamers will never know, but you can know that The Darkness 2 is very good. Why? Read on!

As a quick overview The Darkness is an evil, sentient being, one of the two primal forces in the game's universe (his opposite being The Angelus, who is female and Light) Both forces inhabit male and female hosts respectively, granting them amazing powers, but also causing them to fight for their individuality and control, as both forces contend not only with each other, but to take over their host completely so it does their bidding.

In the first game, The Darkness awakens in Jackie Estacado on his 21st birthday. As a hit man for the Franchetti crime family this turns out to be particularly useful since The Darkness enjoys and is fueled by killing. Things take a turn for the worse, however, when the mob kills Jackie's girlfriend Jenny right in front of him while The Darkness forces him to watch. In turn Jackie goes on a murderous rampage and wipes out the whole mob. But by doing so he is completely consumed by The Darkness.

After the events of the first Darkness game, Jackie is now head of the Franchetti crime family and has been suppressing The Darkness for years. However, a spectacular ambush during an evening at a restaurant forces Jackie to awaken The Darkness once more, unleashing its awesome powers and imbuing our protagonist with scary Darkness arms and a predilection for shooting out lights.

As you can imagine The Darkness doesn't do well in the light. Anytime Jackie stands in, or is blasted with, light he is partially blinded and loses Darkness powers and abilities. So, it is in your best interest to shoot any and all lights, in addition to focusing on the light carrying foes you encounter later in the game. It's not quite Splinter Cell levels of lightbulb assassination, but it is part of things.

Perhaps the most interesting and compelling aspects of The Darkness 2 are the story and characters. Essentially, you are playing a criminal and a murderer. However, Jackie is extremely likable and easy to care for, especially when you see how tortured he is about Jenny's death. You have a number of flashbacks and possible hallucinations of Jenny throughout the game and these are surprisingly sweet and tender moments in contrast to all the brutal violence on display. Even without playing the first game it's easy to connect with Jackie and Jenny and care about both of them because it's so easy to see how much they loved each other, and how much Jackie still loves her. Not many games believably pull off romantic relationships, but The Darkness 2 is certainly one of them. You also get to interact with the men under you in your mansion between action missions and various other interesting characters who are all impressively voiced and animated.

Ethics and Reproducibility: Moira’s start of darkness

Disclaimer: I’m a social psychologist,working at a U.S. university.The basic principles of what I’m talking about apply to Moira’s situation as well, but some of the details may differ.

As a researcher myself, Moira has possibly one of the most relatable evil origin stories I’ve seen in my life. It’s like Blizzard took a researcher,asked them what would make them go straight-up villainous, and turned that into a character.

Let me explain.

Three parts under the read more (with lots more pictures):

“Overwatch held back the pace of scientific discovery for decades. They believed that my methods were too radical. Too controversial. They tried to silence me.”

“We delved deeper into those areas forbidden by law. By morality.”

How exactly was Overwatch slowing down Moira’s research and stopping her? Lemme tell you about the IRB.

“IRB” is short for “Institutional Review Board.” It’s also known by a few other names, but let’s ignore that for now. Their job is pretty much to make sure we aren’t being evil scientists. Not traumatizing participants and all that. Researchers can’t so much as sneeze without their approval. If they find a study even slightly off, they’ll order revisions or, in extreme cases, shut it down completely. Their sole purpose is to stop Moiras. (Edit: See the end of the post for more details on why IRBs are very necessary, and how Moira’s character was likely inspired by the dark history of research past.)

In theory.

Here’s how your typical IRB review goes:

Sometimes (Edit: rarely) IRBs get drunk on their power. In those cases they might request revisions or reject research projects for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the participants’ safety:

I’ve never met a researcher that didn’t have some kind of IRB horror story. We totally understand why they’re necessary (any researcher worth their salt can rattle off a list of studies that made IRBs necessary), but dang can they be fury-inducing. I’m sure that all of us have wished we could skip that hurdle from time to time, no matter how good and ethical it is to have them.

“In addition, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of Moira's research, which further called her discoveries into question. Instead of kickstarting her career, her paper seriously damaged her reputation.”

Let me tell you a story. The story of a researcher named Amy Cuddy. I’m going to be brief, but if you want a more in-depth description, you can read this NY Times article.

Lately all kinds of research disciplines, from Psychology to Biology, have been having trouble with reproducibility. I’ve seen speculation that Moira faked her results, or that she’s just better than other scientists and that’s why.

Amy Cuddy kinda became the so-called “poster-child” of this problem for social psychology. I’m not sure why she was singled out in particular (LOTS of researchers have research that’s failed to replicate), but it’s probably because she has one of the most popular TED talks of all time on exactly the research that’s having trouble replicating. Only half of her findings aren’t replicating (the other half are), but that’s not stopping people.

It’s possible she inspired that part of Moira’s backstory.

People started attacking her, calling her a fraud, dragging her name through the mud, basically using her name as a pejorative. Because her research failed to replicate, and she didn’t immediately disown it (she’s not the only one to have this reaction, but she’s the one who got hit hardest for it). She was pressured out of her job at Harvard, lost friends, lost her health, her reputation, etc. Researchers criticizing work using “for the sake of research” as an excuse can be brutal.

And the thing is, it wasn’t her fault. And it’s not that other researchers are stupid either.

Why doesn’t research replicate?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. Sure, fraud can be one of them. But cases of fraud are exceedingly rare. The only one I can think of is Diederik Stapel. And yeah. Sometimes research doesn’t replicate because people trying to replicate it make some kind of mistake. But in that case it wouldn’t cause the reputational damage we see in Moira’s case.

It all comes down to how science works in the first place.

Possible reason 1: Statistics.

There’s always a chance that scientific “findings” could’ve happened due to a coincidence. Maybe Gabe would’ve turned into a smoke monster anyway, and the experiments Moira did just happened around the same time by coincidence.

So we have statistics.

(Canon note: Moira was disgraced before she joined Blackwatch, but we’re not sure what her research was before then. I’m using this as a concrete example in lieu of whatever her earlier work was.)

I’m not gonna go into the details, but statistics tell us if our results probably weren’t a coincidence. But they can’t guarantee it. We generally say that, if our math tells us there was a 95% chance our results weren’t a coincidence, then our results are “real.” But there’s always that 5% chance that they’re still just random chance. It could be that Moira’s big paper was part of that 5%.

There are also ways of fiddling with statistics that increase that 5% chance, and sometimes researchers make mistakes. (Or, on rare occasions, do it intentionally to get published. Without publications, you don’t get funding or jobs. No more money, no more research, no more job. So sometimes people “cheat.” The practice of fiddling with your data is called p-hacking, and this toxic bit of academic culture is called “publish or perish.” But I don’t think either of those are relevant to Moira, seeing as she does get “real” results.)

Statistics also make a lot of assumptions about how data “should” look, but data rarely meets those assumptions in the real world. Not meeting them can increase your chance of finding (or not finding) evidence for something, regardless of the objective truth.

Possible reason 2: Third variables.

In science, it’s rarely possible to account for absolutely everything. Sometimes results can’t be replicated because there’s some other thing influencing the results.

Maybe Moira’s Shadow Monster Formula only works on, say, people who’ve also been in the SEP. Or maybe it only works when the room’s a specific temperature. Or maybe it’s the time of day, or the subject’s metabolism, or their mood, or something accidentally fell into Moira’s mix and she didn’t notice, and that’s what made it work. Any researcher trying to reproduce her results without knowing about that unknown third variable wouldn’t succeed, and they might assume she made it all up.

Publishing Papers

Now, a quick timeline of publishing a paper: (This is based on my experience in social psychology. It may differ for biology. Grant writing isn’t always necessary if you have other funding, or the study doesn’t require money for materials or paying participants. This is, as you can imagine, rarely the case for biology.)

After all that work and all that time (for a single paper!), your research doesn’t replicate due to what amounts to basically bad luck... And then after all that hard work, and all of that time, you get turned into a social pariah and accused of being a fraud, just because of some random chance.

Do I condone Moira’s actions? Hell no.

But do I understand why she snapped? Well... yes.

EDIT: @tacticalgrandma made a great point. I absolutely shouldn’t talk about this without talking about some other very important things that the writers were getting at.

On a meta level, the writers almost definitely wrote her to reflect some of the more unsavory parts of research history. She represents and references unethical researchers throughout history.

Research has a long history of doing some really awful things, often disproportionately targeting minorities and other at-risk populations like prisoners.

Some examples of this are infecting African Americans with syphilis, and not treating them even after a treatment became available. The Milgram experiment, which essentially convinced many of its participants that they’d killed someone. And the Little Albert study.

In the Little Albert study, researchers conditioned a child to be TERRIFIED of anything white and fluffy (INCLUDING SANTA) and then just never did anything to fix it. The fear of white-and-fluffy later generalized to anything-fluffy. They lost track of him, and let him live his life terrified of everything white and fluffy. I think that Moira’s association with a white rabbit may be a direct reference to this particular study.

Researchers have done some HORRIBLE things in the past, resulting in great loss of life, loss of quality of life, and long-lasting trauma for many people, that disproportionately affected minorities and vulnerable populations.

Moira intentionally evokes this past, and operates much like one of the researchers from the pre-IRB era: people who all-too-often only saw “scientific progress,” and failed to see the real people that they were hurting. It’s possible that her experimentation on Gabe is also a reference to this history of unethical research practices with minorities. Gabe is an ethnic minority, and Moira experimented on him. She took those results and retained all the good parts of them for herself (sucking away life force, and teleportation) without the disadvantages that Gabe endures (constant pain). Even if Gabe initially consented to the experiments, Michael Chu’s stated that he was scared of the results, and his voice lines definitely imply that he is NOT happy with the results.

Moira’s rejection of ethics is a rejection of the rights and humanity of her participants. Her mindset is a reflection of some HUGE problems and HORRIFIC things in research.

Putting knowledge above the happiness, safety, and autonomy of people is NEVER okay, no matter what you’ve been through. What Moira may or may not have experiences in NO WAY justifies her actions. She’s a villain through-and-through.

Gray Matter: Joshua-Usyk and the lessons learned

First of all, the atmosphere inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last night will always stay with me. By the time the venue had filled to capacity, which coincided with Lawrence Okolie’s third-round knockout of Dilan Prasovic in a WBO cruiserweight title defense, you could scarcely hear yourself think. There was 67,000 fans, soccer-style chanting, dancing, beer flying through the air and spine-tingling renditions of “Hey Jude” and – obviously – “Sweet Caroline.” It was a magnificent event! When the Joshua-Usyk fight was first announced, I found it very difficult to pick a winner. I ultimately settled on Joshua winning a decision because I felt that trainer Robert McCracken could formulate a game plan that would nullify Usyk’s speed and movement. The saying goes that a jab counters speed and Joshua’s lead hand is a superb weapon that would be aided by a four-inch reach advantage. But regardless of my official pick, I was never confident. I continually asked myself: What does Joshua have that Usyk hasn’t seen before? After all, the challenger had taken part in 350 amateur fights, claiming gold at both the 2011 World Championships and the 2012 London Olympics. He then competed in the World Series of Boxing and won all six fights, two of them by stoppage. And if that’s not enough, he was the former undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world. Would size, power and a great jab be enough to rattle this guy? Well, we got our answer.

Firstly, Usyk came out to stamp his authority in Round 1, scoring hard and fast with the left hand down the pipe. Three perfectly delivered power shots struck Joshua in the face and you could literally see the champion’s eyes widen from ringside. Usyk was determined to get respect from the bigger and more powerful man and this early assault was by design. The tactic actually reminded of Muhammad Ali launching a string of risky right leads at George Foreman in the first round of The Rumble in the Jungle. “Oh, I can’t hit? Have some of this!” In the sixth round Joshua nailed Usyk with a flush straight right that had an immediate effect. From a 240-pound man, wearing 12oz gloves, that punch must have felt like being bashed in the face with a telegraph pole. Usyk lost that round on my card, and his head would have have been buzzing when he returned to his corner. It was a fight or flight moment for the challenger. What would he do? Well, instead of going on the defensive, the Ukrainian maestro crossed himself at start of the seventh, looked skyward in prayer and won the round easily on clean, effective punching. It was yet another message to the bigger man: “I took your best and I’m going nowhere!” Usyk was dominating the physical fight and he was dominating the psychological fight. And that was never more evident than in the 12th and final round. By this point anyone scoring the contest without an agenda knew that the defending champ needed a knockout to win. Usyk knew it, too, and could have used his feet to stay clear of danger. That’s just not the way he’s built. Aware that Joshua was softened up after sustaining 11 rounds of punishment, the challenger could now take the risk of punching with him. He answered every exchange and came close to producing a dramatic stoppage in the closing seconds. Joshua required two minutes on his stool following the final bell, whereas Usyk, despite sporting some facial injuries, looked like he could have completed the 15-round distance with ease.

Photo by Mark Robinson/ Matchroom Boxing At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, what we have now is a heavyweight who is almost identical – dimension-wise and weight-wise – to prime versions of Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Evander Holyfield. What those smaller champions lacked in comparison to modern day behemoths like Wladimir Klitschko and Joshua, they more than made up for with speed, mobility, pace, technical craft and punch variety. And their gas tanks were beyond reproach. Usyk has all of those attributes plus he’s a lefty. Joshua should be commended for accepting the challenge because he didn’t have to take this fight. Would he have been any less the superstar if he’d vacated the WBO title and let Usyk contest the vacant strap against Joe Joyce? No! Had Joshua gone in a different direction, a select group of fight fans may have crucified him on social media, but any scandal would have blown over in a week or so. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn suggested at the post-fight press conference that, in hindsight, avoiding Usyk would have been smart, but he was quick to point out that Joshua is not cut that way. Full credit to the former champion for always testing himself. Can Joshua turn it around? Holyfield was clearly outpointed by Riddick Bowe in November 1992 and gained revenge the following year by adopting a smarter and more layered game plan. “The Real Deal” claimed a majority decision over Bowe and became the fourth fighter in history to regain the heavyweight championship (alongside Floyd Patterson, Ali and Tim Witherspoon). Holyfield, a well-rounded and complete pro, accomplished that feat as an underdog, which is the position Joshua will find himself in when the rematch is made. You can never count him out – he’s overcome adversity before – but this return fight will be next-level dangerous for Joshua.
