people on here who act like the bible is secretly so left wing are really annoying we know this and i think we can (should) agree the historical and contemporary actions in the name of christianity (both by individuals and like. the papacy or whoever) are Bad which cannot be removed from the theological end of the religion, as well as like the bible just straight up having egregious sexism for example in it. etc. but Also i hate that this tumblr idea then entirely detracts from a very real and important movement of christian influenced political activism. because despite everything i just said you can absolutely for example attempt take a socialist reading of the bible. etc. like famously, dr martin luther king was a minister. less famously, the catonsville nine. dorothy day and the catholic worker. corita kent. arguably louis riel. thats just off the top of my head

i would love to talk about gordon freeman. thank u for the opportunity

the first thing i need to communicate about gordon is that this dude sucks. and i say this in the fondest way possible. he is a bitch from the moment he drops into the world until the moment he goes out. if you dont believe me, give it another watch! gordons mouthy and rude for no real reason, at least so far as “being a regular dude on his way into work” goes, and this dude goes around calling his coworkers names with zero provocation. (of course, we all know that the reason is because its a funny guy improv stream that borrows a bit from freemans mind, but im talkin from a character sense.)

but my argument isnt just that gordon freeman sucks. its that he sucks in a very specific way that i find insanely endearing. i love this dude. i love to hate him. hes awful in a very mundane sense - weve all known a guy like this, at least if youve spent too much time online - and its cathartic to watch him suffer because of it.

gordons a smart guy. as written, hes gotta be - hes a recent MIT grad, on his way to work at a top-secret research facility to do weird shit with crystals and theoretical physics. but the thing about smart guys is that theyre often......selectively intelligent. we can see this in the way that he has a hard time navigating his surroundings, and needs the science crew to guide him through it and keep him alive.

this is one of those things that is a natural consequence of somebody going through the game for the first time, but that i am interpreting as “gordon is kind of stupid sometimes”. its uncharitable but its not like he doesnt deserve it. he likes to boss around the crew as if he knows what hes doing, when he often very much does not, and is fond of demeaning their intelligence. hes real bad about this with tommy in particular, treating him like hes a kid whos playing at being a scientist when tommy is actually a decade older than him. all i am saying is that gordon ought to stay humble. hes awful cocky when he perceives himself as better than others.

which, i think, tracks with how cocky he gets when he gives up on the whole “well-meaning citizen” thing and just unloads bullets into people. he puts up a front of being a Nice Guy, you know, just some dude caught in a bad situation who doesnt like seeing his companions obliterate every NPC they come across, but that doesnt stop him from cackling like a fucking madman and mowing down aliens (and soldiers) every once in awhile. when he stops seeing himself as helpless and starts seeing himself as the one in control, the gloves come off. he gets mean. and i think thats very sexy of him

this, among other things, is why i am insistent that gordon freeman is a control freak. he desperately wants to be in control of the situation at all times, shepherding around the science crew primarily by bitching at them, but its of limited success. its futile. sisyphean. tommy, coomer, bubby, and benrey exist almost to torment him with exactly the thing that would make him suffer the most: a gaggle of people running around causing problems for him, but he cant go anywhere without them b/c hes reliant on them to make it out alive.

its perpetual suffering, and its cathartic to watch. and funny, too. and if youre a little weirdo like me, its very, very enjoyable. how twisted up he gets when nobodys listening to him! how sweaty and frazzled he must look. its cute, and it also makes me want to reach through the screen and shake him and tell him to just be a little nicer. he wants control but he doesnt know how to attain it, he doesnt know how to play nice like a real leader. i think its a neat contrast to gordon freeman as we know him in HL2, where he literally is the leader of the resistance and has to live up to it. this is gordon freeman but if he was moe through helplessness.

“helpless” is, i think, a great way to describe him. a core bit of imagery in half life is this sense of railroadedness and helplessness, with gordon freeman being put into play like a chess piece and having no choice but to move forward. and this iteration of gordon leans into that by being totally dependent on the science crew in order to make progress and Not Die. and hes also subject to the whims of benrey, local eldritch weirdo who has basically made it his life mission to fuck with gordon.

gordons anxieties dont help with that. if he wasnt so fun to stress out and fuck with, the science crew probably wouldnt do it so much! too bad for him that they like fucking with him so much that he was driven into a panic attack (multiple times, even, depending on your interpretation). hes got that real neurotic mindset. always worrying about shit that could go wrong, and attempting to exert control over his surroundings in an effort to control the anxiety.

IMO the real way to nail the Neurotic Gordon Freeman Experience is to combine the ever-present anxiety with his pervasive sense of self-loathing. he openly states that he has no friends and nobody seems to like him, and to that, i really gotta say, i wonder why. he doesnt really seem to factor in that hes kind of a bitch, and has way too high an estimation of his own intelligence relative to everybody elses. its really one of the worst ways to be: aware that people dont like you, but unaware of exactly why. if he was like, 10% nicer, he probably wouldnt have had half as many issues getting through black mesa, but also, its funny to see him squawking his way through the game. so, you know.

its stuff like that that makes me headcanon him as a dude with low self-esteem in general. convinced that hes not likable, not attractive, out of his element......impostor syndrome, except that theres some truth to it. this is a guy who truly does not realize how good he has it: he really is just an average shitty dude, and yet, somehow, benrey took a shine to him. some poor motherfucker out there actually likes him and wants to suck his dick. thats dedication

also, i keep bringing up “repression” when i talk about gordon. and hopefully, what ive been talking about helps explain why. he has a strong desire to be a regular dude, not just murdering his way through black mesa, but if hes pushed hard enough he leans into it. gets bossy. picks up a cigar off a dead soldier and takes a long drag, before smacking forzen around with a pistol and ordering him around. gordon freeman is a regular, kind of anxious guy who likes competitive swimming and streaming on justin.tv and making anime references, and he is also a guy who takes a filthy pleasure in making a trained soldier his bitch. and i didnt make up any of this shit - this is purestrain canon, baby. this is a guy with problems

to me, this screams the kind of guy who represses a lot of shit b/c he doesnt feel like its morally decent. you run into this guy a lot online: the wokeboy, the online leftist, the guy who spends too much time on social media websites. (like reddit. i think he would actively use reddit and he would never get any appreciable amount of karma but he never stops posting. its sisyphean! cathartic.) from the way he talks about “bootboys”, i think it tracks. he knows about imperialism, he knows about feminism, but at the end of the day hes your average american white dude who struggles with internalizing it.

a lot of those dudes struggle with sex and gender issues. (dont we all.) when youre trying to be a Good Person(tm), you spend a lot of time thinking about your own relationship to sex and kink and all that shit. and i maintain that a too-online dude who buries a lot of his control freak tendencies would also try to bury a lot of weird sexual shit in an attempt to seem Normal and Well-Adjusted and not like a little freak. i justify this by the sheer number of times gordon blurts out weird sex shit as a joke. there are only two outcomes to making that many piss jokes: either youre secretly a piss guy, or you lathe-of-heaven yourself into becoming one. i will stand by this

ive talked a lot about why this dude sucks. now, let me talk to you about what makes gordon so much fun to write. first things first: hes funny! a subjective evaluation, yeah, but both in- and out-of-character, hes aiming to be funny. and being the straight man to everybody else plays into that whole “helplessness” thing.

secondly: underneath it all, there is a good dude under there. gordon worries when his companions get hurt, he tries to clean them off and patch them up, and hes got his lil leftist heart in the right place. you could even read a lot of his bossy, bitchy demeanor as him wanting to make sure everyone gets out okay and doesnt hurt themselves. when it comes to animals and anti-imperialist sentiment, gordons a pretty good guy.

hes the kind of guy who would probably see a dog on the street and get excited and play with it, but would get really prickly about the correct way to put dishes in the dishwasher. control freak tendencies.

finally, subjecting such a miserable, tormented guy to even more psychological anguish is really, really fun. you feel a little bad for him, but he kind of deserves it. so many problems he goes through are purely of his own making, and if gordon would just relax and quit trying to hard to maintain control - of himself, of the people around him - and own up to having Problems and Issues, he would be a happier guy. but thats why its fun to bend him until he breaks. being a little control freak myself, putting gordon freeman thru psychosexual torment is cathartic.

when it comes to writing his thought processes, the fact that he is canonically some kind of psychotic (yes, i am boldly claiming this. suck me) and i am also canonically some kind of psychotic makes it easier to write what i think his thought processes are. i just give him my brain issues of “getting lost in thought” and “overthinking fucking everything”. a touch of paranoia helps. even if i dont explicitly label him as schizophrenic please know that i am writing him as a paranoid little nutcase at all times because, uh, you write what you know.

paranoid. anxious. of the mindset that everyones out to get him (which isnt helpful when everyone is out to get him). repressed and deeply Not Normal but trying so very fucking hard to be normal and well-adjusted. a control freak with sadistic tendencies who also really, really likes getting bullied by his best frenemy. a hapless little nerd who sounds really cute when his voice starts to break from nerves. and, most importantly, a dumb jock. do not ever forget this.

1: that’s the opposite of what a shit test is. a shit test is when you make an unreasonable demand of someone to see if they will give in or show some backbone, and you want them to show backbone and refuse you.

2: I didn’t say that I knew for a fact you were lying, I said your faction lies about this thing all the time but cops are also violent abusive authoritarian assholes so I wouldn’t believe you without proof. If you can provide proof (which I can’t click because your reply won’t show up for me outside my dash feed) that’s great. Believing you without proof is stupid. So I said I wouldn’t believe you without proof, and then you could provide it. That’s not proof I’m a bad person, that’s honestly something where both of us did the thing we were supposed to do.

No. Stop that. Stop that right now. That’s not how this works. That’s not how anything works.

Protests are entirely about optics. There are two primary means a protest can be effective, and they rely on being rare or shocking. Protests can be effective because it shows outsiders “Whoa, this issue I hadn’t put much thought into really is serious, look how much it motivates people!”, or because they show outsiders “Wow, these people aren’t doing anything wrong and the police are just losing their fucking shit all over them, the people in power are really afraid of what they have to say!” 

The Hong Kong protests are effective for these reasons. People in Hong Kong don’t protest all the time, so when lots of people start getting out and protesting, you know that the thing they are responding to is a rare, serious situation. And the police are brutally, violently cracking down on them, which lends credence to the protestors’ argument that this is about a brutal police state extending power over them. People look at the HK protests and take notice. Protests are also given credence by being underdog stories of standing up to overwhelming power, and Hong Kong is definitely that kind of event.

The left has burned up all of those things with their own protests. They protest all the time, constantly, about everything (What the fuck was the Women’s March actually about, as in actually?), and any protest about any one thing BECOMES about everything that professional-protestor lefties dislike (as with Occupy Wall Street, the point when everyone should have acknowledged American protests are dead). So when you come out to a protest, you convey no new information about “Whoa, this is so serious, people are coming out to protest”, because you do this all the time. And your protests so frequently turn violent, and you so frequently lie about that happening, and people do still remember how much you praise and exalt Antifa who absolutely love violence, so when you get brutalized by the police, people don’t really care because they think you had it coming. Is that fair? No, no it isn’t, but saying “people shouldn’t think that way” doesn’t change the fact that they do, and that changing that perception requires you to do things you aren’t doing.

But perhaps most importantly, you are not the underdogs. You have had unquestioned control of American cultural discourse for fifty years, and when there is the slightest threat to it, you flipped your shit and started calling everyone Nazis. You outnumbered the parade three to one. There were barricades to keep YOU from charging them, not the other way around. And they weren’t waving swastika flags or chanting about White Pride Worldwide, they were saying “Hey, we’re just being straight, like most people are, and look how much the Left is losing its shit over that!” You’re the overdogs. You’re in charge. You decide what is acceptable to say and think. You have allowed them to easily paint a picture where they are the heroic underdogs standing up to your tyranny.

Their strategy is to say things that are not and should not be offensive (it’s okay to be white, straight people can be proud of who they are), wait for the left to predictably flip its shit, and then say “Wow, the people in charge of our culture really don’t think that it’s okay to be white / straight people can be proud of who they are! Maybe you should look into joining some kind of movement where white/straight people all look out for each other and oppose the interests of minorities, because those people are opposed to us!” 

Your side says “We have to overreact, because this innocuous sounding thing is actually a Nazi code phrase to recruit you!” One, taht relies on people trusting your judgment about who evil Nazis are, and they do not trust you any more. Two, again, their recruiting code phrases have no power unless you give them power. If someone on 4chan decided “Hey, the OK hand sign should be a white power symbol!” and that was the end of it, the OK hand sign would not be a white power symbol. They don’t have the power or numbers to do that. They would have no ability to signal each other by flashing the OK sign, because everyone would still be using the OK sign anyway, so they wouldn’t know “okay this guy is on my team so I can talk about white genocide to him.” But you flipped out and screamed at anyone using the OK hand sign, and now anyone using that hand sign innocuously gets yelled at by you and comes away correctly thinking you are assholes, and anyone who keeps using it now effectively signals “I don’t care what the screaming leftist control freaks say is racist.” You did their plan for them. You made it a white power signal when nobody else had the power to do that.

Their strategy is to lay a garden rake on the floor and you step on it like fucking Sideshow Bob every single time. 

They recruit by pointing to your compulsive overreactions and saying “You should join us, because you need to prrotect yourselves from these assholes!” You keep compulsively overreacting and making it worse. There is no interpretation of anything that justifies “I have to do what the Nazis want me to do and I have to play into the Nazis’ plan, because otherwise, I am tacitly supporting Nazis!” They know you are going to do that. They count on you doing that, and they make plans so you doing that helps them. Stop helping them.

What would have happened if you didn’t show up to counterprotest? If you hadn’t tried to suppress the march in the first place, it probably wouldn’t have even happened, because nobody would care about it. If it did, it would need no assistance from the alt-right, and the alt-right wouldn’t care because it wouldn’t be Sticking It To The Libs. It would be a lame event nobody cared about that fizzled out like the XFL. But if everything was the same up until the day of the march, and nobody showed up to protest? It would be a lame event nobody cared about. It would not be in the news. It would not be shocking. It would not help the alt-right push its narrative. There would be nothing memorable about it. You would show you didn’t care. They are beneath your notice, because they don’t matter, and nobody should give a shit about what they say. Nobody would think “Oh, wow, the left thinks Nazis are okay!” because the entire strategy of the Nazis here is to not let on to normies that they are secretly Nazis, and because normies already know you are Maximally Upset about everything all the time. A straight pride parade is just called “traffic”, so it would have no more power to intimidate or terrorize anyone than fucking traffic does. 

I need you to understand this. Okay? I need you to understand. Your side has been in control so long, that you are facing political opponents who know how you will behave. They have predicted how you will behave and their strategy is to use your behavior against you. They KNOW that you will say  “If people hadn’t protested, we would be showing that we believe Nazis in our town shouldn’t go unchallenged”, they are COUNTING on you saying that, because they have created a situation where that behavior harms you and helps them. 

You are doing what they want. You are not helping anyone but them. If you continue to do the things they have predicted you will do and that they rely on you doing, then you will keep helping them and harming yourselves. No amount of “I can’t show that Nazis shouldn’t go unchallenged!” will change the fact that your compulsion to behave this way and demonstrate your moral purity only harms your interests. 

Protests are entirely about optics. They do not have mythic power beyond their ability to convince other people through their optics. The only people leftist protestors ever try to convince are the people who already agree with them.

The Gods Will Not Save You: Reflections on Meaning and Existence

A few years ago, I had to commute from Brooklyn to the Bronx for my job as a social worker at The Legal Aid Society. It was a hellish commute. What should have been a 50 minute to an hour commute, ended up being 75 minutes or longer on most days. (Anyone who lives in New York City can attest to the awfulness of the MTA.)

The only upside to the commute was that I read a lot of books and listened to a lot of interesting podcasts during that time. One morning I was listening to a Zen Buddhist podcast on WZEN. To be honest, I was barely listening. I was tired and a bit hungover. The day had not started yet, and I already wanted it to end.

But something changed somewhere in midtown Manhattan. The quiet monk, speaking in quiet, hallowed tones started shouting into my headphones. Without warning, he started bellowing, “No one is coming to save you. No one is coming to save you. You are on your own. Stop expecting it.” It rattled me. And it still rattles me today.

I think secretly most of us assume that something will come along that will make everything ok. Maybe it’s the perfect partner or the perfect job or a magical amount of money that relieves all of our stresses and where we all feel perfectly content. It fits into how human beings think in narratives. If our life is a story, then surely it will have happy outcomes with a lovely denouement at the age of 85 where they pass away peacefully surrounded by many loved one.

But maybe that’s wrong. Maybe there is nothing that’s going to make it all ok.

A patient of mine, who is a senior citizen, recently was reflecting on their life’s work. This person had been involved in leftist politics for a good portion of their life, including working with unions and was even involved in the communist party in an American city. This person had spent a good deal of the 1960s and 1970s for integration and desegregation especially in schools.

“Institutions won’t ever save us,” this person said. “My work didn’t save us.” This person’s voice trailed off as they reflected on their career and on the resegregation of schools in American life in recent years. This statement might strike a young person as cynical, but it struck me as true. This person had dedicated most of their adult life to causes, whether it was unions and strikes or desegregation and anti-capitalist work. And in the age of Trump and resegregation, this person had seen many of the gains they had helped achieve start to regress.

“So what does save you?” I asked them.

This person reflected for a few moments, “My children. My siblings. Just trying to appreciate my last days and just really be here.”

I bring up this story because unconsciously I’ve always thought my work could save me, that it would give me purpose and meaning to my life. But this conversation left me a bit shaken too. What difference does being a therapist make really? It can help a little, but it’s like a slowly leaking faucet trying to fill all the oceans of the earth. What difference does me writing a blog post like matter? Why does it matter if I do anything?

I suspect that many people feel this way on some level about their work and their lives, but it’s too frightening a thought to make conscious. So they find their own ways to fill that void in their lives. Some seek vanity and fame. Others money. Others dedicate themselves to religion. But in my experience, that kind of worship has plenty of insidious effects of its own. The irony is that those things that are supposed to fill the void are the things that make us feel more anxious and insecure. Smarter men than me have said a similar thing,

“ If you worship money and things — if they are where you tap real meaning in life — then you will never have enough. Never feel you have enough. It's the truth. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly, and when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally plant you. On one level, we all know this stuff already — it's been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, bromides, epigrams, parables: the skeleton of every great story. The trick is keeping the truth up-front in daily consciousness. Worship power — you will feel weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to keep the fear at bay. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart — you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on.”

I didn’t mean for this blog post to turn nihilistic. It started with the idea that “institutions will inevitably fail us,” and it expanded from there. But it’s been a good exercise because I get to consider the “why” of it all a little more deeply than I have for some time.

I don’t think there any perfect solutions for the question of existence. It feels like a bit of a cop-out to say this, but everyone has to find their own answers, I suppose.

But as I’ve started again to reflect on my existence more in the last few weeks, I always go back to the answer that seems the most honest to me: awareness.

Awareness of my own fragility and vulnerability. Awareness of my own mortality. Awareness that there are people I love dearly, and that I need to do whatever I can to help and support them through things, because as a therapist, I know better than most, that people are suffering more than we’d ever like to believe.

And in that same vein, an awareness that my work is valuable even if it is on a tiny, granular level because I spend every day with suffering people at their most fragile. And that means something to me and hem. And in that way, I am trying to live my life as honestly and vulnerably as I can. Today that feels like enough despite the fragile state not only of the world but of my mortality. And maybe that’s enough for now.

Here's a tricky one: define cultural marxism

The actual movement of cultural Marxism or the Right wing Conspiracy theory?  Ok well lets do a bit of background

First off, the Progressive movement and most of its subgroups (Feminism, Class reform, Racial Equality then the abolitionist movement) started in the Enlightenment, we see the birth of the modern left in the American and French Revolutions long before Marx was born, so this notion that say, feminism comes from Marx is just temporally stupid, because you see early feminists (though the term didn’t exist yet) back in the 1790, again before Marx was born.  So the the Right wing conspiracy theory is basically an attempt to link all progressive movements into this single monolithic thing that is descended from Marx and since Marx is bad therefore progressiveness is bad therefore Far Right is good.  This was a literal Nazi conspiracy theory, they called it “Cultural Bolshevism” back then and liked it to the giant Jewish conspiracy.  Becauses as always, when you look at the specific progressive issues one by one, you see that most of them are not only really popular but also you know…just good sense.  Like take Gamergate for example, there was no Nathan Greyson article and the notion that feminists are controlling the gaming industry is absurd, but if you take all this bullshit and make it an attack on a vague nebulous “Cultural Marxism” then you can avoid getting into the specifics, because Far Rightists almost always fail when you talk specific policy rather than abstract rhetorical ideas.  

     The vast majority of leftist aren’t Marxist, Marxism is a very specific political philosophy that is actually quite stringent, for example I am very progressive but I also like capitalism (though I want it to be more regulated, more taxed and include better social programs) actual marxists don’t like me and I’d likely find a bullet in my skull in a Marxist goverment, but I’m lumped into with Marxists by the right because if we actually talk about wealth inequality in America, they don’t really have a leg to stand on.  Cultural Marxists is just a vague “Other” who people can rally around to oppose and avoid talking about actual issues with you know…facts.  Again, Marx is taught a great deal on college campuses, but many of those classes are talking about how he is wrong or what mistakes he made or why Communist countries tend to fall apart so disastrously.  But in the grown up world somebody can be a critic of Marx and still like some of his ideas, or dislike Marx and still be a leftist. 

   Ok so unto the actual real life Cultural Marxists who were a very specific thing. 

    So Marxism talks about how it is about the people and it represents the common folk against the elites but if you look at it in practice it is actually a very elitist philosophy, particular Leninism.  Its not only very anti religion, anti tradition, and anti national culture (all of which make you pretty unpopular with every day people) but it is very urban worker focused and also tends to subscribe to Vanguardism, the notion that you need this special elite of ideologically pure Marxist intellectuals to run the country as a dictatorship for your own sake until you are ready for the glorious communist utopia which will come about any second I swear.  The Reds in the Russian Civil War never had the most popular support, and until WWII the Soviets were mostly unpopular among their people.  So for a lot of international Marxists, they were left with a question 

“If the current system is so awful for the common people, why do the common people keep siding with conservatives”.  And then with the rise of fascism in Europe, they were like “wait why are people getting behind this pseudo populism which doesn’t actually serve their interests?”  Thus was born the Frankfurt School, people who wanted to study culture itself from a Marxist stand point.  Normally Marxism is quite dismissive of culture, so these guys were never really popular with mainstream Marxists since they focused on entertainment rather than economics.  

   Now the Frankfurt school actually had a lot of really interesting and valuable insights about media which i recommend everybody checking out, but with the major caveat of remembering that like all Marxists, they really love to simplify complicated issues into nice little simple formulas just like Marx did with his linear view of history, which as somebody who studies both History and Film I have…..complicated feelings towards Marx.  But Cultural Marxists did have a valid point about how if you look at popular media as a whole rather than specific examples, patterns emerge.  They weren’t the first to notice this and not everybody who notices this is a communist, but they talked a lot about the movies that came out in pre Nazi Germany.  Because films are a popular media made by a group of people for a mass audience, if you notice reoccurring trends in a film, it likely say something about the culture as a whole.  The point they made was that even works that weren’t overtly Nazi propaganda (Triumph of the Will, the Eternal Jew and all that) and instead look at the non Nazi works that also had similar themes.  For example, a lot of movies in 1920s and early 30s germany were about a society who have lose their identity and are subjected to some sort of humiliation, and many of them involve either

Strong men taking upset people and driving them to murder (M, Dr. Mabusai, Caligari) 

A secretive manipulative cabal who are secretly causing chaos in society (Nosferatu, D.r Mabusai again, 

A people stripped of what made them respectable and distinct (Metropolis, the Last Laugh, The Blue Angel) 

or

There are reoccurring trends and themes in all these films which hint at what is going on in germany at the time and if you look at the films at the time you see a culture which has lost its way and is in a state of confusion and fear.  

“Again Caligari to Hitler” is a really good book to check out, even if I don’t agree with it at all, cause it really loves its simplifications.  

This is a good introduction to the Frankfurt School though I think that it buys into their arguments a bit too much, if people are interested i could offer my criticism of Kyle’s criticism (for example, Cultivation theory predated Cultural Marxism)

     But the main point is that it is about looking at the larger culture as a whole is a viable form of critical observation that reveals a great deal.  

While the Frankfurt School did get critical acclaim among intellectuals world ride, liberal and non liberal (notice how the Alt Right basically uses the same  times of criticism against popular film like Star Wars or Ghost Hunters), the communist aspect of it never caught on, because as always, Marxist is very good at noticing patterns and identifying problems, not so much with the solutions, bit of an underpants gnome problem.
