This is a vent post.

I saw this post about wanting to bring back the energy and vibes and community that was in the 2016 era of the UTMV community. And at first I was elated. I joined the fandom in 2017 and I look back fondly on the community I found myself in. Lots of fanfic comments. Lots of RP Roleplays. Lots of Askblog activity and in-character answers and all these wonderful things.

Yes, there were toxic and mean things too. There always are. But I never really found myself in any of it. I only remember the fun and the joy.

And I initially reblogged that post excitedly responding to it. And I went to the blog to see if they posted anything else good.

And I saw their DNI. "Proship DNI".

Their pinned post literally said to me "hey disclaimer just so you know 'i dont support harassment', but if you (also) dont support harassment, if you enjoy shipping, if you think censorship is bad, then don't talk to me because I think youre a terrible person and deserve being harassed."

And they wonder why the 2016 era of UTMV died.

I would have loved to interact. I would have loved to gush about AUs and fanworks and art. But that person left a big sign saying they think I deserve hate for enjoying fiction and that they dont want to talk to me.

Like. Bro. That is kinda the reason youre not getting 2016 UTMV back. You dont wanna associate with "nasty proship" people. Who uh. sorta made UTMV. UTMV (and lets face it, fandom in general) was built on the backs of Proshippers. (although that is sort of an anachronistic statement -- the idea of "proshipping" is new because it was the default, expected political stance. it wasnt "proship vs anti", it was "everyone (aka proship) vs trolls and haters (aka anti)") Then a bunch of haters started being nasty to frans and papyra and fontcest shippers, and puritanical rhetoric ripped apart what was left of the fandom after art theft and the tumblr purge drove the artists away.

The fandom isnt going to knit itself back together unless we foster a community mindset, which we can only do if we all agree to ship-and-let-ship. Block and mute tags you dont like, learn to recognize when an AU isnt for you, and dont play in tags you dont actually like.

But like, just because I like the color Green doesnt mean I cant appreciate Blue or Red. You can hate Green all you want but alienating Green likers is just going to make it harder to live in a society where nobody is making you like Green.

I dunno I just feel like its not fair to ask for a community effort and simultaneously condemn the very people who would have been part of your community for not being good enough for you. It's mean spirited. It's rude. It's cruel.

I want 2017 UTMV back. I would be more than happy to get to see 2016 UTMV with my own eyes. But it isnt coming back, because it takes people to make a community and nobody wants to make a community welcoming and safe.

I remember telling my then-boyfriend that the intro of those last episodes had shots that looks like actual nightmares I've had)

Oh also the flailing disembodied hands remind me of some of the early episodes about the Cluster in Steven Universe. Remember Garnet finding some of the early fusion experiments made with broken bits of gems?

And that's what messed up Shadow Weaver's face, and she throws a fit at everyone and calls them "weak" and uhhh murders at least one of them?

face-touching! the only way she's able to show any affection at all...but only ever to manipulate people in her charge. anyway she disappears after that.

Catra is not going to get a satisfying answer. One of the reasons it was a relief when my dad died was that I could let go of ever having any hope of him explaining to any kind of satisfaction why he did what he did. (He did apologize, once; in the most manipulative and self-serving way possible, when I was 35--at the time I thought maybe it meant something, but eventually I realized he'd actually made things worse, because he'd taken away any belief I might've clung to that he didn't know any better at the time.)

In any case, Shadow Weaver's answer is basically "You're just like me, and my life was hard, so why should yours be easy?" Like that old line about how people who suffer through hard things have one of two reactions: Either "why shouldn't you also suffer, you're not better than me," and "nobody should have to suffer like I did."

This explains part of why Catra gets worse for the next like two seasons. She tried to extend a kindness to Shadow Weaver--keeping her from being sent to Beast Island, giving her the trinket thing, offering to work together since Shadow Weaver thinks they have so much in common, right? But it bites her in the ass so bad.

So why should she be kind to anyone? When has anyone been kind to her? When has Catra being kind to anyone ever improved her life or made it easier?

But yeah the trinket had some kinda magic dust in it and Shadow Weaver escaped, and Catra had a (very understandable) meltdown about it.

Back in Bright Moon, the Best Friends Squad is using the moon alignment to get a clearer signal on Bow's track pad: "Serenia. Portal. Mara." AAAAND end of episode.

I'm not as big on them anymore, but as my first ship here it holds a special place in my heart, and I still love them a lot! I've been a bit scared of posting/rb them to be honest, because I've seen firsthand how bad it is on Twitter. I have yet to see harassment over it here, and given dazatsu week is coming up and I want to participate, I hope it's ok on here? Please let me know how it's been. (if that's fine with you. First I want to make clear that I dont really know about the bsd fandom on tumblr because I'm usually just here to post art and search on dazatsu tag is there's anything new.. but I saw how it was when the novel about odasaku and dazai's first meeting came out and I'd say it was a mess LOL but if you ask me the only downside I experienced posting about dazatsu here is just the low numbers of notes compared to how I'm doing on twitter but I'm still happy seeing people reblogging my arts here or spamming likes on it! :D just tag it properly and you will be fine I guess...

It's sad that some people have to pretend they hate dzats or afraid to even just rb/rt it because they are scared they'd be attacked by their "friends". Not all people is seasoned like me in seeing the hate posts and comments and turn it into sass or laughter and i dont know if I'd call it lucky or not that not many haters bother to attack me (directly), but I think it has something to do with how I'm in between of "being part of the bsd fandom" and "not part of the fandom" since I've muted a whole bunch of them on twt.. but I can say that if you keep on being scared then the haters would think they'd won! And we cant allow that!!

Also I think there are people who dont really ship them romantically and but dont really mind them either so.. I think those haters are loud because they feel threatened or something..

A tad controversial, but what’s your take on MHA’s Deku/Katsuki Bakugo? Just curious. (Reminder that I’m a critical fan>stan of the ship.)

ooo good question! btw I love getting these mha asks even as I've been one piece recently. mha is so familiar its comforting and fun to think about.

tbh im pretty neutral on izuku x bakugou. I personally don't ship it but I can understand why others do. I like/reblog art or comics sometimes but I don't read fics for them. I also don't follow the bk dk tag just because its sheer popularity would overwhelm my feed ajhfjfamfd

in canon izuku and bakugou have a very interesting dynamic and I do think that they're always going to be each other's Number 1 in a sense. They've had such a large impact on each other's lives and have an unspoken connection that can leave others feeling out of the loop sometimes.

I guess I just see their relationship as Complicated.

I don't really ship it but their relationship is a core part of the story so it's totally understandable why people would explore/analyze the dynamic further in a romantic way, but if I had to summarize my thoughts I'd say that someone's most important relationship doesnt /have/ to be romantic. I can easily see Izuku/Bakugou married to different people but still going to each other first for help, to tell good news, etc. they hold a special place in each other's hearts in a way that even they may not be able to describe.

I think my favorite scene with them that I rarely see people talk about is when Shiggy starts to pursue OFA and bakugou wordlessly joins Izuku as he flees. I know Bakugou has his own reasons too, but the whole situation of bkdk about to face a terrifying villain escaping together to protect information that not even the other heroes know about yet (OFA)...it's a powerful way to show their importance to each other. like yes, bakugou was the only one to know about OFA and therefore help, but theres a REASON he's the only one who knows. izuku cant keep things from bakugou.

Im rambling but theyre very interesting and I don't talk about them often! theres sooo many ways to read them and while I don't view it as romantic I still believe theyre each other's "person" ..even if some read that as a negative thing. I've read analysis before about izuku having romantic feelings are suppressing them, etc, and it was a good read. I'm suppose open to the ship but like what they have now

This post has grown far outside of its original scope and lots of people have commented on things I do and don't agree with, so I want to say one last piece on this topic: First and foremost: It is fine to want to grow your audience, and to study and implement ways to do that. Its also perfectly fine to feel frustrated when your work goes largely unnoticed despite your efforts, or even frustrated at how people who seem to be in a significantly better place than you complain about numbers that would make your day. These are understandable feelings, and I don't think people should dismiss them. The system you have to work within when putting content online is unfair and random, its going to feel unfair and random- gambling doesn't feel great until you get payout. This is not a post to say just get over it and be happy with what you got, because sometimes what you got fucking sucks. And for a lot of people this isn't just a fun hobby but something that puts food on the table, and they are desperately trying to get a boost to help secure that. But what it is a post is about how most people do not mean to talk down to you about this kind of thing, or intend to come off as smug about it- and are in fact earnestly trying to tell you to watch out for a type mindset that can easily sneak up on you and make the entire process of being a creator completely miserable. A lot of artists who feel completely massive compared to you fell into this trap and maybe they recovered, but a lot of them don't and fret about these same things constantly, despite the change in position. A lot of them jumped ship and never looked back. When you exercise for a long time, its good to step back and take a breather to stretch and rest. Its an important pause that gives you a break and helps protect against long term damage from strain. You need to be willing to do that mentally with art and content creation for the same reason. Its not just about numbers equating to self worth or quality (although thats perhaps one of the most common problems people have)- theres other ways it manifests like a hyper-focus on what the "well performing" posts are, a desire to seek audience approval in a way that has you rewriting how you engage with your own work or what work you deem acceptable to make. And while you can do that for a little bit, and it may even pay out- its not sustainable long term. You will burn out, you will hate creating, you will hate posting, you will hate even thinking about drawing- eventually the exhaustion will hit. We shouldn't pretend like art is strictly fun and games (because its not, for many its a job or the closest they have to one, and that sometimes means doing things that aren't fun) just like we shouldn't pretend like these pitfalls aren't a legitimate issue- they can be as debilitating as wrist damage. But just being aware of them and taking small steps to re-ground yourself can go a long way. Check your follower counts every couple month instead of every day. Check how many notes you got on that piece after a week instead of after an hour. Remind yourself that 10 reblogs is still 10 whole people, visualize notes as people in a room instead of a nebulous concept. Dont post for a bit but still draw. Try to appreciate likes as their own thing instead of as "worthless" engagement. Find an extension to hid the numbers, etc, etc. Its hard to say what might help because everyones different- but just take time to step back and make sure some element of what your doing is still fun and for you- even if it cant always always be all of it.

Small artists you need to understand that when you see an artist who you think has 'made it' tells you not to worry about the numbers and to not fret about getting more likes than reblogs they are not telling you it because they think you are stupid for caring or because they dont need to network to survive they are very likely telling you that because they have witnessed first hand the way the numbers game tears people to shreds in terms of mental health and motivation

Regarding the good omens post I do believe it's weird useless discourse, but also I cant help but get mad when I see someone say shit like "headcanoning Crowley and Aziraphale as anything other than men is homophobic and transphobic" like yes I've only seen it once and it had a bunch of reblogs but FUCK it's so tone deaf and chronically online that it ruined my day.

Absolutely weird useless discourse, yeah. It helps nobody. It achieves nothing. It just makes people mad at each other over... fictional characters.

The beauty of Good Omens is that especially Aziraphale and Crowley, both as individuals and concerning their relationship, are so easy to read into whatever suits you best. It's one thing that really spoke to me about its fandom, too, when I first came here, the way fans were happy to interpret them as gay men, as genderqueer, as trans, as ace, as so many things, and there was art and fic with it and it all happily coexisted. Like, last year it was normal and celebrated that you'd read one fic, be it canon or AU, where they're gay married and then another where they ace and in a QPR and then one where one of them is intersex and all of them were right and wow look at all our cool rep and the community and the love and acceptance we have for each other here. I loved that. It was such a welcoming place.

And, thing is, I think it still is. The majority of those people are still here. Gatekeepers are a small, loud minority in any community, and looking at the notes on my rant post... yeah, a large number of fans want to have this open to interpretation, this accepting culture around the show and the ship (and are still in fact living it, enjoying a variety of different queer readings of the show and book).

Also, a thing people forget about Good Omens is that it isn't a queer rep show. It's the adaption of a book, it's a story about averting Armageddon, about finding out who your friends are and where you belong and who you are and learning to do what is right by you own moral compass. It does Good Omens a great disservice to reduce it to "oh, it's queer". It includes queer coded characters. It includes queer themes. But they're not meant to be the core message. They're one element of the story among many. Good Omens is a very rich and nuanced narrative, and some of those nuances include genderless characters and characters in relationships that aren't straight.

But a number of people don't see themselves represented exactly the way they want to, either by Good Omens on its own or by Good Omens when comparing it to other things like Our Flag Means Death, and now they're unhappy about it (because they're hurting), and lashing out at everyone who likes the thing they don't like, not seeing that all it does is hurt other queer people. (I'm starting to be a little bit Internet Old, and this is such a common, sad pattern in online spaces for minorities, especially spaces that tend towards minority activism. It's true for queer spaces, for disability rights, for the fight against racism... A lot of us have been hurt in our lives, and continue to be hurt, and the hurt makes us defensive, and we lash out at each other instead of standing together against the actual problems. Fighting amongst ourselves weakens and distracts us, and leaves us with less energy to deal with the actual problems. ... Sorry for ranting.)

hello, so i am shifting accounts, woo! well, partially shifting. the primary reason why i am leaving is because the environment in cule tumblr right now is starting to get hostile. idk if i should, but im just gonna talk about what i am seeing on here that has made me uncomfortable, cause i dont want to be silent:

biphobia, acephobia, people talking over neurodivergent people, people invalidating other people's triggers and being unwilling to cooperate by tagging their posts with warnings, vaguing and ganging up on mutuals (i have seen none of my mutuals partake in these, but i am not online all the time so i cant be sure what happens when i'm offline), and just people being rude and mean. definitely didn't help that a lot of the victims were poc and/or neurodivergent people.

i’ve been lucky to not have directly been involved in any of the conflict that arose, but it is really tough and upsetting to see mutuals’ names get dragged under just for having different and valid opinions on a tv show that ended in 2020. all of this while blogs who purposely started the hate and discourse are getting support, praises, and tractions, and i'm just gonna say it, its because they are very popular among the cule and have a lot of followers. i am unsure if they are unable to grasp the influence they hold or are purposely using it to bully others but idk. also the anonymity of discord channels makes things harder.

i'm not saying i'm a perfect person and i have definitely made mistakes on this account, which i am regretful of. but i am learning and growing and a lot of these people i see seem fixed in their ways. i also do understand that it is human nature that in a power struggle people will most likely stand with the bully, often without even realising that that's what they are doing. really the only option i have in this scenario is to walk away because the rest of us are powerless (i know whatever i say here wont have an impact either, considering i blocked some of the blogs too). i know i can just block and unfollow people, but that hasnt been enough for me. and frankly after spending majority of the day on my new account, my mental health feels much better. (hoping it doesnt get worse after i post this)

Honestly really sad that a lot of super poly trio fics and, more specifically, catrapta fics that I love have been deleted and removed from AO3 post S3. Like, ugh! They are so good! And I miss them so much! There was a lot of really fantastic exploration about the slow and often awkward process Catra and Entrapta take to realizing they have feelings for one another and then what they do about it.

I still love Scorpia/Catra and Scorpia/Entrapta but I feel like I at least see some content for those ships. But catrapta, my beloved? Oh! Spurned! (I say dramatically in the rain, which is really just a hose I'm holding up out of view, because I am an author and could fix this but I dun wanna I want the good stuff beamed directly into my brain)
