More postmortem thoughts on Krakoa era X-Men and why, exactly, it was a divisive era with fans and why it turned out the way it did.
First things first, I think we need to define why people like X-Men stories - or, at least, why I, personally, like X-Men stories or any story for that matter. To paraphrase Jim Carville, "It's the characters, stupid."
Ignoring the Lee/Roth/Thomas years because Silver Age X-Men was a miserable failure of a comic book with a few glimpses of greatness when Neal Adams was on the title, let's turn our attentions to the true foundational texts of the X-Men: Chris Claremont's legendary tenure on the book.
Claremont's run was characterized by many things - exceptionally verbose dialogue, a litany of personal catchphrases, lots of fetish fuel content - but I want to focus on the thing that, above all, made X-Men a success. That, of course, being Claremont's character work.
What made X-Men (and its sister titles at DC, New Teen Titans and Legion of Super-Heroes) a success was the focus on interpersonal character drama mixed with superhero action. In the grand Marvel tradition, we got to know these characters in the good times (Kitty Pryde adopts a pet alien dragon!) and the bad (Kitty Pryde's parents are getting a divorce!). Logan and Scott and Ororo and Kitty and Kurt and Piotr and etc felt like real people because of the amount of time we, as readers, got to spend with them, seeing their internal monologues, their dynamics with each other, their personal demons, etc.
So fast-forward thirty years post-Claremont to Krakoa. The X-line is flagging and has been for years - for reasons largely self-inflicted by Marvel editorial at that - and so they bring in Jonathan Hickman to fix things. And he does. House of X/Powers of X is an immediate sales success, and Krakoa posits an exciting new status quo for the X-Men.
Except there's one issue. X-Men at its best is a character-driven book, and Hickman is very much not a character writer. His forte is large-scale science fiction stories that all tell the same story. What Tom King is to "war veteran struggles with PTSD", Hickman is to "great men build something great and it all comes crashing down because of their hubris." And Hickman can and will mold existing characters to better fit into that rubric.
This - the transformation of the X-Men from a superhero soap opera into a high-concept sci-fi story about Dominions and mutants vs. machines and Moira X - was where I think things went wrong. Krakoa, with some finessing, is a solid premise - but the real meat of it is in character dynamics that we didn't get.
Okay, Sinister is on the Quiet Council, cool. How does Cyclops feel about that? The Morlocks are all resurrected- but their killers have been granted a clean slate. Is Callisto going to let that stand? Rockslide died and came back wrong, and we never got to see Anole's reaction to it.
That's the Krakoa I would have wanted to see. Keep some of the big, grand plot elements - Orchis is absolutely implausible the way Hickman presented it, but maybe a scaled-back version? - but focus on character dynamics and drama on the island itself. (Rather than having a pirate book, a magic/Arthurian legend book, a space book, etc. Use the primary X-Men titles to explore those areas rather than bastardizing Kitty Pryde into some vulgar pirate captain.)

A few more things that bother me about Simon Lasker. Not the character himself, but the way the character was written:
1. Can he produce fire or not? Supposedly he can both produce and manipulate fire, which differentiates him from St. John, but they never really talk about it, and his X-Men costume still features a flame-thrower on his back.

Why? Why does he have this gear that he supposedly doesn’t need? It feels like a lazy attempt to just get the look of “Pyro, but he’s an X-Man now.” It might make sense if he mentioned that he can only produce a limited amount of fire, or that manipulating existing fire is easier than creating it himself (except they keep forgetting to have him use or clean up existing fire in later battles - Storm and Iceman have to put out a wall of fire when Simon is RIGHT THERE and should be the one doing it.) All of this could still work, but they don’t have any kind of discussion about how Simon’s powers work.
2. Apparently the entire new Brotherhood was mind-controlled or influenced by Mesmero, to varying extents, and the X-Men don’t do a damn thing about it? They are willing to completely absolve Amara of her crimes with the group (and to be fair, Amara is pretty obviously mind-controlled), but they let the rest of the Brotherhood get taken away by SHIELD. They don’t make much attempt to reach out to the rest of them, or investigate how much free-will the other Brotherhood members actually had. It’s mostly just brought up as a partial excuse when Simon wants to join the X-Men, and even then they are initially suspicious and hostile towards him.
3. He burned down a school and it’s never mentioned again:

This scene seems like it should have been much more important, both for the story and Simon’s character development. I know mutants cause mass destruction every other day in the Marvel universe, but since Civil War started over an elementary school getting blown up, it seems like a mutant burning down a community college and killing who knows how many people would have been major news. But maybe Mesmero whisked Simon away before the authorities arrived, and no one knew it was him. This still seems like it should be an important part of Simon’s character development. How many people were in the school at the time? How many people did he kill accidentally? His time in the Brotherhood makes it clear that he has morals and he doesn’t want to actually kill people. But there’s no follow-up to this story. I’d expect him to be wracked with guilt, or maybe be keeping it like a shameful secret, afraid that the X-Men will kick him out if he tells them what happened.
I guess it’s possible that the fire happened on a weekend, and there weren’t very many people there, if we want to reduce Simon’s culpability. I also wouldn’t mind if a later writer wanted to ret-con this and say that it never happened, and Mesmero planted the memory in his mind to make him vulnerable and easier to manipulate. That would make some sense.
Also, LOL at fake Xavier saying that he “knew” and “helped” original Pyro.
4. WHY does he look so much like St. John?!

I know Marvel likes their blonde/red-headed fire characters, but Simon also has the same skinny frame and the same facial structure as St. John, with the prominent cheekbones and long, thin nose. What was the point? Was it going to be a plot point later on? Was Simon originally meant to be the unknown bastard son or distant cousin of St. John? The whole “look-alike” Brotherhood gimmick didn’t really matter, Kitty immediately recognized that it wasn’t the original guys because their voices were different.
I think the physically similarity of Simon is part of what really sticks in my craw about him. As if the writer said, “Oh, you want a skinny blonde Pyro to join the X-Men and bang Iceman? Well, here you go! Here’s a skinny blonde Pyro to join the X-Men and bang Iceman. Of course, he ISN’T the original Pyro, he doesn’t have any of the original’s history or interesting personality or back-story, but he LOOKS like Pyro and he’s got fire powers, and that’s all that matters, right?”
Maybe they just should have let Iceman bang Johnny Storm. This is what happens when you don’t let Johnny Storm bang Iceman, Marvel!
I’m not actually trying to bash, Simon here, I’m trying to accept and not resent this character that I honestly do resent, both for being a replacement for my fave (St. John), and for getting the kind of storylines that I always wanted for original Pyro. I mean, I enjoy St. John as a bad guy. He’s a bastard piece of shit, and I like him just fine that way. But he’s always been a bad guy that I thought had the potential to maaaaybe shift to the good side, or at least serve on a team with the good guys as a reluctant ally. (I feel that way about a lot of Brotherhood members, like Blob, Toad, Avalanche and Phantazia - they aren’t necessarily good, but they could maybe go that direction if writers wanted to redeem them). And he was even moving in that direction before his Legacy Virus death, but then after he got resurrected in Necrosha, he’s still running around being a bad guy, with no follow-up or development, completely wasted as a character, and here’s a shiny new (somewhat bland) Pyro to take his place. In fact, I’d rather have had St. John die again in Necrosha then to pop up in a few books as a villain-of-the-week. He showed up in the Iceman series just so that Bobby could call him a loser, and I totally agree, but also ugghh........ I’m just gonna pretend that zombie St. John was corrupted and messed up from Selene’s magic.
Of course, St. John has actually gotten to be part of a team, and gotten some glimmers of redemption in Marauders, even if he hasn’t gotten much in the way of character development. I feel kinda bad for Simon, who barely got a chance to develop before dropping out of the books. I’d be down with him getting more storylines if he and St. John can coexist as characters. If nothing else, I want to see them putting on a show at the Gala trying to one-up each other with fire tricks. It would be adorable.
Also, I think my new ship of choice is Simon/Romeo (the Inhuman). They’ve never met, but we may as well pair off two of Bobby’s cast-off, forgotten boyfriends. Also, when Simon brings Romeo to visit Krakoa, and he talks about how much their new mutant society reminds him of Attilan, it might prompt Bobby to realize how completely strange and screwed up everything is.
#simon lasker#pyro#believe it or not I don't actually hate him#I kind of resent him for looking like St. John and not being St. John#but I don't hate him#I'm almost starting to like him#he just needs some better development and he could be good

Resurrecting Demanitus
Guess what? Kitty mom got inspired! Again! By @wheredomelodiescomefrom ! This art was just too good to leave it without a background story.
Sooo... here we go again, I guess.
------
“Mine! They are finally mine!” Zhan Tiri laughed as she held both Sundrop and the Moonstone in her hands.
“No!” Rapunzel cried, running towards the demoness. Zhan Tiri side-stepped and the princess missed her, barreling into Cassandra, both women landing on the floor.
“With these I can finally resurrect Demanitus. And he will be completely under my control!” The demon laughed menacingly as her gaze moved towards the corridor. “And it turns out I have a perfect vessel right in this castle.”
She laughed one last time before disappearing. Rapunzel and Cassandra pushed themselves up, both struggling to stand straight.
“What’s… what’s going on?” Cassandra questioned, leaning over the wall for support, the princess doing the same.
“It seems taking the stones forcefully has weakened us.” Rapunzel replied, gritting her teeth and pushing herself to stand properly. She wobbled a little but managed to not fall. “We have to go after Zhan Tiri.”
“We don’t even know where she is.” Cassandra pointed out, managing to stand straight too.
“She said so herself. This ‘perfect vessel’ is somewhere in the castle.” The princess reminded her, moving towards the door. “And the only place that holds people at the moment is the throne room.”
“Why the throne room?” The dark-haired woman fell into step behind the other, her brow raised in question.
“Varian is building a portal to send Zhan Tiri back into limbo.” Rapunzel explained as they descended to the ground floor. “Hopefully, it’s ready and they will manage to use it before-”
A sound of rushed footsteps stopped them mid-walk. A group of people ran from behind the corner, led by angered Quirin, followed by Adira, Hector, Eugene, and the rest of the defenders.
“Eugene!” Rapunzel called and ran up to her boyfriend. His eyes widened at her sight.
“Sunshine, your hair-” He said in surprise.
“Zhan Tiri took the Sundrop.” She explained quickly and shot a glance at Cassandra standing not far away. “And the Moonstone. She said something about resurrecting Demanitus and finding a ‘perfect vessel’.”
“The Moonstone? That means-” Everyone now took notice of the dark-haired woman standing awkwardly several steps away. They pointed their weapons at her and she flinched and looked away.
“I… I’m not going to fight you.” Cassandra said. “Not that I have anything to fight with…”
“As much as I’d like to resolve it now, we have more important things to worry about.” Adira pointed out, her face frowned.
“Eugene, what happened?” Rapunzel looked at her boyfriend, remembering how the group rushed out from behind the corner. “Did Zhan Tiri take someone already?”
“Sunshine…” Eugene’s eyes turned into worry and he casted a glance at Quirin and the rest of the Brotherhood. He sighed and focused on the princess’ emerald orbs. “She took Varian.”
~~~~~~
Varian struggled in his binds, the chains that magically appeared around his body, tying him up with little space to move. They were completely surprised when Zhan Tiri suddenly appeared in the throne room. Before anyone could react, she grabbed the boy, the chains suddenly binding his whole body, and disappeared again, taking him with her.
They reappeared outside, in a place Varian didn’t see before but knew exactly where it was, if only the big tree growing at the edge of the cliff was any implication. Janus Point, the place considered the most magical, where the barrier between the universes was said to be the thinnest.
“Let me go!” The alchemist struggled again and yelped in pain, as the chains tightened around his body.
“Hush, child.” Zhan Tiri said, her back turned to the binded teen. “Soon, you will serve the greater goal.”
“I don’t want to serve any goal!” He shouted in response, glaring at the demon. “Whatever you’re planning, it won’t work! Rapunzel will-”
“The princess will do nothing to stop me.” Zhan Tiri cut in, turning around and smiling in a way that sent chills down the alchemist’s spine. “Not without the power of Sundrop.”
With those words, she produced two stones, the gold one held in her right hand, and the blue one in her left.
“With the combined power of both Sun and Moon, I will resurrect Demanitus, putting him completely under my command.” The demon went on, hiding the stones into her dress and closing the space between herself and Varian, bringing her hand to cup his cheek. “And you, my dear, will become his vessel.”
“N-no matter what you say, Rapunzel will save me!” Varian replied defyingly, moving his head away from the demon’s touch. “She’s too stubborn to give up.”
“Oh, I’m perfectly aware of that, dear alchemist.” Zhan Tiri said and her grin grew impossibly wide. “But soon, there will be no one for her to save.”
~~~~~~
“We can’t just rush in blindly!” Cassandra argued and Eugene sent her a death glare.
“You can’t expect me to sit still while this demon has my son!” Quirin growled back, Adira and Hector nodding their heads in agreement.
“By being Quirin’s son, he is considered part of the Brotherhood.” The white-haired woman explained. “And we don’t leave anyone behind.”
“I’m not saying we should do nothing!” Cassandra said back. “I’m only pointing out, we don’t even know where they are.”
“That’s why we need to spread out and look.” Hector growled and the dark-haired woman suppressed an annoyed growl herself.
“They can be anywhere. And searching in a way you suggest can take days!” She pointed out.
“It’s better than doing nothing!” Quirin argued.
“Guys, guys!” Eugene stepped to stand between Cassandra and the Brotherhood. “I’m sure we can figure out if we stop fighting with ourselves.”
“Why is she even here?! She should be locked out in the dungeons, or whatever this kingdom does to criminals!” Hector grumbled and Eugene let out a tired sigh.
“As Rapunzel already said, we can deal with it AFTER we save the kid.” The man reminded and shot a pleading look at his girlfriend. “Any ideas, Sunshine?”
“What about… Janus Point?” The now-brown-haired princess suggested, looking at the rest of the party. “It is considered magical. Some even say the barrier between the universes is the thinnest there.”
“And if Zhan Tiri is planning to summon Demanitus, this place could be our best bet.” Queen Arianna nodded in approval and smiled at her daughter.
“Okay, we have a plan. Can we go now?” Hector asked impatiently and Rapunzel looked at everyone gathered in the corridor, before nodding in determination.
“Let’s save Varian.” She said.
~~~~~~
Varian struggled against his binds once again. The chains surrounding his body disappeared, changing into shackles that held his wrists together over his head, and his ankles separate. Each end of the chain was secured around the branches and roots of the tree, the teen facing the end of the cliff.
“Stop struggling, boy.” Zhan Tiri huffed in annoyance as she shot a side glance at him. Once again, she produced the two stones from her dress and approached the bound alchemist.
“You won’t get away with this!” Varian cried in defiance but was ignored.
“Let us begin, shall we?” The demon grinned widely and pushed the two stones into the tree, each on one side of the tied alchemist.
The tree lit up, and a white sigil appeared on the trunk, various symbols displayed inside the circle, the sun and moon corresponding to the stones’ arrangement.
“ZHAN TIRI!!” A sudden cry sounded from behind. Varian couldn’t see from where he was tied, but the familiarity of the voice was enough to give him hope. Rapunzel was here. “Let him go!”
“A little too late for that, princess.” Zhan Tiri laughed and turned to the alchemist. “It has already started.”
The wind suddenly grew stronger and the demon grinned widely.
“Sun and Moon unite,
Listen to my plea.
Bring the one I want,
Make him obey me.” Zhan Tiri started chanting, her voice booming over the sound of wind, eyes glowing green.
Varian felt a sudden pain overwhelming his whole body. He cried out, the blood-curdling scream freezing everyone on spot.
“Varian!”
“Son!”
“Kid!”
Everyone cried at the sound, Quirin and the Brotherhood already rushing towards the demoness.
“Now, at my command
He will rise once more.
Never leave my sight
We will rule as one.
Rule as one!” The incantation finished and Zhan Tiri laughed maniacally.
Varian squirmed in his binds, screaming and yelling. If it was even possible, it sounded as if his cries grew even louder, even more desperate, even more terrifying. Over the cliff, a portal appeared, a white hue exiting it and reaching for the teen. When it touched his skin, he cried out once more, tears appearing at the corners of his eyes.
“Stop it! You’re hurting him!” Rapunzel cried, as she tried to somehow unchain the struggling teen.
“Give up, Princess!” Zhan Tiri laughed from where she was levitating several feet over the ground. “Once the process has started, there is no way to stop it!”
“There is always a way!” Eugene shouted, pointing his sword at the demoness. “And if anyone can find it, it’s Rapunzel.”
The princess smiled slightly at that and turned her face back towards the tree and the alchemist. He was still screaming, but, with horror, she noticed his voice was slowly dying out, strengths leaving him far too quickly. Her eyes shot around the sigil, looking for weak spots, anything to stop this.
Her gaze fell on the symbol of the sun, noticing the golden glow right in the middle. She shot a quick glance at the moon symbol, taking notice of the blue glow there. The Sundrop and the Moonstone. If she managed to pry them off…
She reached out her hand towards the golden stone and cried out, when the power shot through her. She retracted her arm with a pained cry, cradling it to her chest.
“Raps!” Cassandra was next to her in an instant, shooting a concerned glance at the rest of the party, trying to deal with the demon. Then, she looked back at the sigil, understanding the intentions of her friend. “Let me help. You grab the Sundrop, I’ll take the Moonstone.”
Rapunzel calmed her breathing and nodded, her face full of determination. On the count of three, the two women both grabbed one of the stones and pulled with all their might, ignoring the shots of pain the raw energy caused. The sigil blinked in and out, and Rapunzel smiled triumphantly.
“Keep going, Cass! It’s working!” She cried to the other woman and she nodded in return, teeth clenched in determination and pain.
With a last cry, the both stones simultaneously were pried off the circle, the sigil ceasing its existence and the chains binding Varian disappearing in an instance. He fell forward, slumping unconsciously to the ground.
“Varian!” Quirin cried upon noticing his son falling and ran up to him instantly. “Son, are you alright?!”
“D-dad…?” Blue eyes opened slightly, staring unseeingly at his father. “What…?”
“Shh… it’s okay. You’re safe now.” Quirin hugged his son closer and Varian leaned into the hug with a delighted sigh.
“NoOoOoOoOoOoO!” A demonic cry sounded from behind. They looked up to see furious Zhan Tiri staring at the disappearing portal, the white hue being sucked back inside. “WhAt DiD yOu dO?!”
“It’s over, Zhan Tiri!” Rapunzel cried, standing tall, the Sundrop in her hand. Cassandra stood next to her, holding the Moonstone. They shared a look and nodded their heads, staring back at the demon.
Simultaneously, they both raised a hand holding the stone towards Zhan Tiri. A gold and blue energy shot out from the stones, mixing together and hitting the demon in the chest. She shrieked and then there was an explosion. When the smoke cleared, the demoness was gone.
“Is she… gone?” Eugene was the first to speak as he looked around.
“I… I think so…” Rapunzel replied, staring at the Sundrop still in her hand. She noticed a blue glow to her right and saw Cassandra holding the Moonstone to her.
“I- you should take it, Raps.” The woman said, looking away. “I don’t- I shouldn’t have it. I’ve done enough damage already.”
Rapunzel nodded and picked up the stone, making sure she held it in the other hand. None of them wanted to risk the stones combining, seeing how they reacted just moments ago. The princess looked back at Quirin, standing up with Varian secured in his arms, the alchemist still too weak to stand on his own.
“Let’s go back to the castle.” Rapunzel decided, looking at everyone gathered. “We have much to discuss.”
Anjali: Jinana’s Familiar
Got hold of this meme and decided to just fill it out in a post of my own instead of going for ask prompts or cluttering up the rebagel train...
General Questions
1. What is their name, pronouns, and species?
Anjali - she/her - Sand Lynx (Catclaw Desert variety)
2. Describe their appearance!
Anjali is large even for a sand lynx, over two feet high at the shoulder and weighing well over 60 pounds. Like all of her kind, she has a pale coat with faint lilac-grey spotting that helps her blend into the gypsum sands of the Catclaw Desert. The color shades into a darker lilac-grey around her lower legs and paws, the end of her tufted tail, and her ears. She has long black ear-tufts and dark markings on her face and muzzle. Her nose and paw pads are black, and her eyes are a pale blue with rounded pupils.
3. What is their personality like? How are they around strangers vs. people they know?
Anjali is suspicious of strangers, and will place her own body between them and Jinana, hissing quietly if they get too close for her comfort. (Like a caracal, she will hiss at anything she dislikes the tiniest bit.) With people she knows, she is a shameless beggar for food and attention. With people she adores, she acts like a daft kitten, despite being the size of a large dog, and will throw herself to the ground and roll around at their feet (’social rolling’).
4. What are their magical abilities?
Once per day, Anjali can use an ability that functions as a Jump spell for one round. This triples her already-impressive jumping ability for a single bound that can cross 75+ feet of horizontal distance, or 36 feet vertically. Imagine this creature just... appearing on the roof of a three-story building... terrifying.
5. What’s their goofiest quirk?
Anjali is fully capable of using a doorknob, standing up on her back legs and using her paw pads to get traction. The quirk, however, is that she always closes the door behind her. 😆
6. What snack will always get their attention?
Cheese. She adores any kind of cheese, but the stinkier the better. She won’t (intentionally) knock you over to get the cheese in your hand... but almost.
7. Do they have a pet peeve? (pun intended)
Anjali does not like to have her ear tufts played with... but it’s so hard to resist...
8. What’s their most special skill?
Sand Lynxes are known for their jumping ability, and Anjali is no exception. She can leap up to 12 feet vertically (an ability shared by real-life caracals and lynxes) and catch birds on the wing.
9. How energetic are they?
Like most felines, Anjali spends a lot of time sleeping. But when she is awake, she is a ball of energy and needs some time each day playing, running, and jumping.
10. Do they enjoy attention or are they more of a loner?
Anjali loves attention and will actively demand it if she feels she isn’t getting enough. She will bump with her head, smack with her tail, pat a person with one of her paws or even lightly chomp a limb to get attention.
11. What’s their level of mischief like?
Relatively high. She is endlessly curious and forever poking into things to investigate them. Like all cats, she enjoys knocking things over and getting into high places.
12. What’s their favorite way to let off steam?
She actually loves to play fetch! She also loves to try and catch an airborne toy in mid-air (but it has to be thrown like... really high), and to play tag.
13. What were they like as a baby? Did your OC know them back then?
Originally, Jinana discovered Anjali as a lost, hungry kitten at an oasis in the Catclaw Desert, not terribly far from Nopal. S/he hand-reared the sand lynx, who bonded with hir over time. Anjali was pretty much like any other kitten, except larger!
14. What song would you use to describe them?
"Jump” by Van Halen 🤣🤣🤣
15. 3 emojis that sum them up?
😼🍖😻
16. Most likely to…?
Shove herself into bed between Jinana and anyone else who might be there, where she will then sleep belly-up with her legs in the air.
17. What’s the most unique thing about them/makes them stand out?
Anjali is capable of running small errands at the Market, wearing a set of saddlebags with a pocket for coin and a note from Jinana. The merchants aren’t sure if she can count... but they’re not about try and cheat her! (Don’t send her to pick up meat or cheese though... most of it won’t make it home...)
OC Relationship Questions
18. How did they meet your OC?
Having lost or become separated from her mother and littermates, Anjali was discovered at an oasis in the Catclaw Desert, starving. Jinana coaxed her into eating and drinking, bringing her back to Vesuvia with hir and raising her to adulthood, magically bonding with her in the process.
19. What is their relationship with your OC like?
Anjali adores and is very protective of Jinana. She would go everywhere with hir if allowed to... so long as it isn’t raining. ;P All the same, she can be kind of judgmental (like all cats) and has strong Opinions on things.
20. If your OC lost their memories, do/did they remember their familiar? If no, do they now and how did the reunion go?
In the Apprentice continuity, Jinana did not recall Anjali, nor vice-versa. Because of the way that mage and familiar are bound, bringing Jinana back to life brought Anjali back as well, her spirit arriving in the body of a newborn kitten. (Asra suspected but could not confirm this.) She is three years old and has had litters of her own by the time that Jinana finds her again. In the interim, they regularly dream of each other, but neither of them know why until Jinana gains the knowledge of hir own death and resurrection.
21. How do they feel about other people in your OC’s life?
Anjali likes Asra, but was slightly jealous of him in Jinana’s previous life. She adores Heron. She likes Julian because Jinana likes him, but also enjoys making him nervous. (“I think she wants to eat my face.”) Portia’s delight in meeting a cat so large charms Anjali in turn. Inanna, being one of the few familiars around that is larger than Anjali herself, gets particular respect.
22. What’s your OC’s favorite thing about them?
EAR TUFTS GO FWIP FWIP FWIP (only Jinana is allowed to play with them!)
Also Anjali will sit up on her back legs and ‘dance’ with Jinana when s/he is practicing, it’s adorable.
23. What’s their favorite thing about your OC?
HUMAN NAILS (they give scritches)
24. What’s one thing they do for your OC that no one else can?
Anjali can sense when Jinana is feeling disconnected or having intrusive thoughts, and will come and sit with/on hir or even just flop on hir to squish hir soul back into hir body, so to speak.
25. How often are they with your OC?
More or less constantly, outside of times she is sent on an errand, or stays at home because a) it’s raining or b) Jinana is going somewhere that a 60+ pound cat-thing is probably not welcome.
26. How easy is it for them to get away with things with your OC? Vice versa?
In non-Apprentice timelines, Anjali sees Jinana as a parent figure, and while she might have Opinions, she generally defers to hir and doesn’t act out much.
In the Apprentice timeline, however, having raised two litters in the wild, Anjali sees Jinana as her charge, and won’t let hir get away with things like not eating or resting enough. It’s going to take some time to re-establish a balance in their relationship.
27. Which Disney character-animal sidekick duo is their relationship most like?
...I don’t have enough background in Disney to be able to pick one. Open to suggestions, though!
Creator Questions
28. What was your inspiration for this familiar?
Real-life caracals and lynxes, but bigger and adapted for true desert life. Sort of a Big Floppa of the desert. 😂
29. Why did you choose them for your OC?
I considered a bug familiar, which would have been on-brand, but it’s also very on-brand for Jinana to have rescued this ‘poor kitten’ which grows up to be a big horrible sand lynx that follows hir everywhere.
Heron: “Jinana, that is a sand lynx. It’s going to get almost as big as you are.” (Jinana did not care.)
30. What’s your favorite trait or bit of lore pertaining to them?
Anjali has a strong maternal instinct and will attempt to raise any small animal that comes into the household... including Julian’s wrinkly little puppy. He probably freaks out the first time he sees her carrying the puppy in her mouth (having just rescued the critter from its own curiosity).
31. If you were to meet this familiar irl, how would you react?
By herself? Terrified lmao
In the company of her person? Fascinated and dying to peT THE LORGE KITTY
32. What would your familiar be? Why?
A housecat. Because that’s just how it be. 😸
Fate episode 6
When last we left Elemental Academy, I was seeing doomful parallels to every Bad Ending arc in Higurashi. And sadly, I like the three adults and my genre-savvy tells me they won’t all make it through this last episode.
How much of a downer will the ending be? Who will end up screwing everything up? (my money’s on Bloom.) Who’s for the chop? (my guess is Silva and one out of Dane, Riven or Beatrix.) Will we finally learn the red truth of what happened at Aster Dell? Will we ever get the skinny on what the heck Burned Ones are? Will the show finally give me the lowdown on changelings that I’ve been whining about since episode one? Will we get the full story on Bloom’s destiny? (My money’s on no to at least three of the four.)
And I suppose we’ll finally answer the question we started with: Good, bad or irredeemable?
One last time, let’s dive in!
We pick up right where we left off, Bloom having a mental chat with Rosalind! Rosalind says, ‘Do you have any idea how special you are?”
...waitwaitwait, is there gonna be a prophecy? There’s always a prophecy! A prophecy that the Chosen one would be born in Aster Dell and that’s the real reason Rosalind nuked the place. Only she didn’t know which of the babies it was, she guessed Beatrix and she guessed wrong.
Am I right? Sorry, I barely let the episode start, let’s get back.
Rosalind encourages Bloom to bust her out. Bloom flames her eyes up.
Aaaaand we cut back to the girls in the corridor. Terra wonders what they could be talking about and Stella teases that she once heard Terra talk about dirt for two hours. I’m liking friendly Stella, but she faceturned faster than Tinx at the end of WoW!
Terra’s also worried Beatrix may recover from being frozen and come after them. Sensible, Terra! But no, Beatrix will be gone when you get back, off getting the mysterious “him.” I know how these shows work!
Ahahahaha! I’m right! Beatrix is gone! I swear I type these things while I watch, all guesses are genuine!
And then Dowling, Harvey and Aisha bust in. Yeah girls, you might’ve not done this during a Burned One attack! Harvey says “Not another word!” which nobody listening is why y’all gonna get the bad ending, and the girls follow him. Stella resurrects her inner witch to tell Aisha, ‘Hope the brownie points you get from this will keep you company when you’ve got no friends.” simmer down Stell, she was trying to protect people’s lives… Aisha goes with the girls leaving Dowling to go after Bloom alone.
Rosalind is coaching Bloom on how to burn through the barrier. Bloom’s grinning, because magic feels hot and dangerous and you just want more. Then the barrier goes down and Bloom has a moment of worry about what she’s done before she… has a very caring moment, she grabs Rosalind assuming the older fairy will need water and food after being trapped for so long. That is really sweet, Bloom. But Rosalind says, ‘No. I need magic.”
And here comes Dowling! I assumed Rosalind would steal Dowling’s magic, but when the headmistress gets there everybody’s gone.
Opening!
Bloom and Rosalind come out a door in the graveyard out in the forest. Secret passage! Dowling doesn’t know about it. Dowling doesn’t know about lots of things, according to Rosalind. Bloom really should be having second thoughts here. Rosalind has an evil face!
Harvey reads the girls the riot act. He’s wearing his army coat, the same kind Rosalind wears, from their soldier days. He’s horrified about all the girls have done. He turns to go.
And Terra jumps up, “You lied again! About Rosalind, about everything, and you’re angry with ME? You can’t punish me for not knowing something you didn’t tell me!”
Yes! Get ‘em Terra!
Stella and Musa tennis-match look from daughter to father.
Harvey just says, “I suggest you all cool down!” and leaves without facing his daughter’s very sensible argument. And he magics the doors locked.
Terra: ‘I’ve caught him in a logic trap and he’s used his magic to ground us.’
Stella: “That means you won.”
Then aisha heads for her room to “deescalate the situation by removing myself from it” and Stella calls her a rat of a teacher’s pet and Musa asks for a brief pause so she can get her headphones. She flees into her room as Stella and Aisha get into it.
There’s Sam! Hiding in Musa and Terra’s room!
Stella says everyone over five knows not to snitch, even terra knows not to snitch, and Terra gives her a look. Aisha brings the logic: burned Ones, outside! Bloom, kinda single minded! Rosalind, an extra problem we don’t need right now!
Dowling checks the stone circle. Nobody there.
When she leaves, Rosalind and Bloom appear. So Rosalind is mind/light at least. Rosalind puts her hands over the center stone and absorbs magic.
Bloom asks what happened at Aster Dell. Rosalind makes a very evil face. ‘Everything Farah told you is true. I lied to them. I told then Aster Dell was evacuated. It wasn’t.”
Bloom starts to wonder if maybe she released a baddie.
But rosalind has more to say. ‘One of the fundamental tenets of the Otherworld is that only fairies can do magic. The settlers of Aster Dell were the exception. They were humans who drew on sacrifice and death. Blood witches.”
Gee it’d have been nice to hear that fundamental tenet sometime before the last episode! 9_9
So Rosalind saw an opportunity to wipe out the totally unforeshadowed witches along with the Burned Ones. And Bloom was a fairy baby kidnapped by the witches. Her fairy parents are still unknown. Bloom’s freaking out, but Rosalind just says, ‘You weren’t safe in the Otherworld, the power inside you was too great. that’s why the witches wanted you, to use your power.” and the Burned Ones can sense Bloom’s power and want to get rid of it before it’s used on them.
Yikes! Bloom realizes her presence is putting everybody in danger!
Rosalind: ‘Sucks to be special sometimes, doesn’t it.” But now they can go after the Burned Ones! And Rosalind has another trick to teach Bloom…
Hmm, so these Burned Ones were just… around? And gathering because they sensed Bloom’s magic? I assumed someone summoned them back after not being seen for 16 years.
We go to the fighters at the barrier. Remember how last episode Bloom drugged Sky and left him passed out at the stone circle? Well Aisha found out somehow and told the teachers so Silva is giving Sky the “why did I find this out from Aisha?’ and Sky hits back with, “Why’d I have to find out about Aster dell from Bloom?” But they’re in the middle of a siege situation here so Silva logically suggests they talk about that later.
Another few specialists including Riven and a girl named Kat who knows Stella are watching Noura’s last video. Kat thinks she knows where it was shot. Silva says, “Let’s go.” Just him and five students. Riven says, ‘Without fairies? that’s fucking stupid, there’s six of them!” and Sky shuts him down; order’s an order. That’s the most twit-ish thing Sky has done this whole show.
They hear Burned Ones growling… but it’s coming from the direction of the school! Yikes! Everyone rushes back!
At Alfea, the lights, that were never bright anyway so we’d remember this is a dark show, flicker out! Terra says the electricity runs on magic and there are energy wells… Sam says he’ll go check it out. He Kitty Prydes it through the door, unbothered my the sealing spell. So if he can phase, can Terra learn it too?
Spooky empty corridors! Flickering lights! Sam all alone! Y’know Sam probably can’t do that trick Kitty does where an enemy launches at her and goes right through, because he can only phase through earth-y and plant-y stuff.
Yikes! It’s a jump scare! Burned One right in Sam’s face! It claws him and he goes down yelling in pain!
But he manages to get back into the girls’ suite to tell them there’s a Burned One loose in the school!
Back with Bloom and Rosalind, Rosalind’s encouraging Bloom to channel lots of magic. “More! Let the fire consume you! Control limits you!” bloom says she’s scared and Rosalind encourages her to embrace that feeling, to enjoy it! “And with the right people around you...”
Bloom unflames. “You mean with you.” Bloom’s realized it! “You want me to listen to you and trust you and let you guide me? I just met you.’ and that’s not all! Bloom realizes Rosalind left her on earth a danger to everyone around her, to hide her from Dowling. “Without any guidance.”
Rosalind: ‘The guidance you needed was love. Farah couldn’t give that to you. Vanessa and Michael could.” Ugh, so their names are canon. And Rosalind knew about their baby and “gave them a second chance. And I gave you a hiding place from the monsters that wanted you dead.” And rosalind says she’ll always look out for Bloom, and when this is over they’ll find Bloom’s birth parents.
I dunno Bloom, maybe ask a whole lot more about how she knew about an Earth couple whose baby had a heart defect?
It had occurred to me that Beatrix might be the other half of the changeling swap, if there’s healing magic that can fix things like that.
But no time for that, Burned Ones are in the school and the girls are stuck in their room! Bloom has to go help. She asks Rosalind if she’s charged up enough to help help. Rosalind says she can’t, “But you don’t need it. BS, Rosalind, you could totally help. But Bloom runs off leaving the lady with the evil face all alone.
In the suite, Sam is getting worse, they can’t get out, and cel phones are giving up.
Bloom races toward the school. She hears noises from every side… but there’s Sky! At least bloom seems relieved he’s ok after she spiked his drink. He doesn’t seem nearly as upset as he should be over that, but I guess we gotta save the school first!
Inside dark halls there’s Riven and Kat with flashlights. They hear noises, but it’s just some students led by a male fire fairy with a handful of flames. Kat goes with them to the “courtyard” which I’ve been calling the cafeteria, I guess it’s outside? The big set with the arches and walkway overlooking it.
So Riven’s all alone to get the rest of the students from this area! He goes into the greenhouse… and there’s Dane! And Beatrix lying asleep on a table. Dane brought Beatrix here but she’s still paralyzed from the spell and Dane doesn’t know how to help her.
Riven just says it sucks for her and she’s not worth it. Which true we’d be better off without her but also yikes, heartless much Riven?
Dane: “She cares about you and I know you care about her. Don’t act like you don’t.”
Riven shrugs and turns to go and Dane grabs him. Riven says fine, he’ll help. Dunno why they don’t just carry Beatrix to where the students are gathering, that’d be safer for everyone.
Sky and Bloom are having the “you drugged me.” conversation. And the “I trusted you, I told you things.’ and “you trusted me but you’d still have stopped me.’ and “you were gonna release a murderer and a crazy ex-headmistress.” and Bloom starts realizing everyone had reasons for what they did and Sky wraps it up, ‘just because they’re doing what they thought was right doesn’t mean that it is.”
Back with the girls, Sam’s getting worse and something is banging on the door! it’s Sky! Did he just kick his way through an enspelled door? Badass.
Sky and Stella look at each other and say hey.
Then we all head for the courtyard and comparative safety!
Dowling is magically sealing the beautiful arched doors with trees in them, she tells the boy fire fairy to get his compatriots to weld them shut, and everyone to start making barricades. Silva’s handing out armor to fairies who want it. Harvey has a whole chemistry lab set up with a lunch lady helping him. Badass Marco is still getting treatment for his injury when the girls bring Sam in for help. Sam’s in a bad way. Harvey asks why they didn’t bring him immediately and Terra reminds him they were locked in their room. Harvey flinches.
Dowling stands on the stage where we saw Luna before, as behind her fire fairies weld the doors. She tells them the situation: Burned Ones in, power out. But she got word to Queen Luna and the army’s on the way! Everyone looks at Stella when she says that. They’re safe in the courtyard… but if the Burned Ones get through before the army comes, they’ll have to fight. Dowling does her best to be inspiring, “Let’s show them what it means to be Alfeans!” But I just feel… the lack of history. And I know, we have history. Feels like we don’t.
Sky and Stella have a moment. Bloom told him Stella ran away from home. Stella: “Home’s on its way here, so that’s fun.” Sky offers to help her hide but Stella says she’d love to take him up on it but… ‘Breaking up was the right thing to do, we never should’ve gotten back together. We are codependant at best, toxic at worst. This time I have to deal with it myself.” yay Stella! Grow into a better person! Sky says she sounds just like Bloom and Stella jokes that that’s what he’s into these days.
Meanwhile Bloom is following Dowling trying to convince her not to be mad. ‘Rosalind isn’t the monster you think she is.”
Bloom, you just met her you said it yourself!
“She had a reason to lie. The settlers of Aster Dell weren’t innocent. They were blood witches. And my birth parents weren’t even there.”
Dowling just sighs and says “She certainly has a way of winning people over doesn’t she.” Dangit, I wanted her to just kill the retcon and say, “there’s no such thing as blood witches, Bloom.”
Bloom goes with, ‘is your ego so fragile you can’t even consider for a minute you might be wrong about her?” Dowling says Rosalind is just manipulating, Bloom says you’re doing that too, and Dowling sensibly points out Dowling could be here defending herself and also defending the school.
Bloom flinches from that logic but says Rosalind is still too weak.
Dowling says the stone circle is the conduit to the magic of the land. It supplies everything… like the electricity. And the barrier.
Yup. Nice job breaking it, hero! Bloom singlehandedly brings about the bad ending!
Bloom says the Burned Ones are after her, and Dowling had figured that out. Bloom says she knows how to fight them now, but Dowling points out, ‘you’re he reason we’re in this mess, you’ve done enough. Help the other fire fairies weld the doors if you want to.’
And she strides off, pausing to suggest to Aisha that the other water fairies could use her leadership.
Aisha had been coming to talk to bloom I think, but she changes her mind.
In the greenhouse Dane and Riven are making a medicine to revive Beatrix. Turns out Riven is good at potions because he used to hang out with Terra. ‘Look, I’ll deny saying this but she’s not the worst.”
Ok, that makes Riven’s nasty remark to Terra in the first episode way worse.
Riven: “I might’ve led you astray this year...’
Dane: “you didn’t. Beatrix is special.”
Riven: ‘You are gay, right? I’m not blind? I know when someone wants my dick.”
Dane: “I think you’re hot. She is too, in a different way.”
There’s nothing like a cute threesome! ...and this is nothing like a cute threesome. But now the problematic element sits up and says, ‘You made the right choice. Rosalind will be impressed. When this is all over, you’re going to want to be on our side.”
Burned Ones growl! Rosalind pulls magic from the stone circle!
And Sam is in a bad way. There was a splinter of Burned One claw near his heart. Dang, I should’ve put him on the list of people for the chop! Musa tries to use her mind magic to take some of his pain, but it’s too much for her.
Harvey starts falling apart, stuttering that he can’t get the splinter out. Terra encourages her father, and Harvey manages to pull the claw splinter out. sam’s alive, but until the Burned One that tagged him is dead it’s only a matter of time!
The fire fairy boy says he heard they have the rest of the night and a whole day before the army comes. Too long for Sam, and if the Burned Ones get through the doors too long for all of them. Bloom, who’d been watching in horror the results of her bad choices, sets her lips and strides out.
Bustle of students putting up barricades. Sky is working with Badass Marco, then he turns and there’s Bloom with an apology. “I should’ve been honest with you like you were honest with me and I’m sorry.” And she reassures him that the kiss was honest, and gives him another one for emphasis!
Sky: “If I still say I don’t believe you, can we do it again?”
Well Sky is the most sane and stable person here, he’ll be good for Bloom! And immediately her catches Bloom’s glance and says, ‘whatever you’re thinking of doing… I’m here.”
And Aisha knows Bloom’s gonna try something, because Bloom always tries something and this time she thinks it’s her fault. Stella tries the, ‘If only her friend hadn’t turned on her..” and Aisha feels bad and she’s sorry. And here’s Bloom, come to get them! It’s the last episode, we all get to go fight!
Sky’s not with them, he’s with Silva and Silva has a final confession to make. Because he thinks they’re all gonna die tonight, he wants to tell Sky the truth about what happened at Aster Dell. Because that was where Sky’s father died. But Sky thought he died in battle…
Flashback! On the plains. Silva is yelling that there were still people, the town wasn’t evacuated. He wants to run and tell Rosalind. This must be while the magic users are up on the cliff ready to call down lightning. Silva says his friends think they’re only killing Burned Ones, but Andreas says Rosalind knows the truth. And he’s going with what Rosalind said.
Silva says ‘I know Rosalind gave you a sense of purpose, I know you’re indebted to her.” backstory there, but surely Andreas wouldn’t be on side for nuking hundreds of people?! Silva says, orders or morals? And Andreas… yep, he’s Team Rosalind. he’s not gonna let Silva warn the others.
He does not say, “They’re evil blood witches, we’ll show you the evidence and then come back.” which is really the only correct thing to say here.
Punches are thrown! The two warriors scuffle. Then Andreas goes for his sword. Silva draws his own. And a few swings in, he runs Andreas through. And races to the top of the bluff to stop his friends being accessories to a massacre.
Oof! What a thing for Sky to learn! And before that, Silva says, Andreas really was a great hero. Just… flawed. As we all are. That’s not much good and sky snaps, ‘What the fuck am I supposed to do with that?” But he’ll have to work it out later because now the Burned Ones are breaking in!
Dowling and the specialists move to the front, Dowling saying, ‘Keep your emotions in check. Runaway fear leads to runaway magic.”
In the clinic Harvey and Terra battle to keep Sam alive. Terra goes to get help and finds Musa zoned out with headphones. Terra begs for help and Musa says she can’t bear to feel somebody she cares about die, not again. This Musa’s mother dies last year, and Musa was with her and felt everything. Oof! The two girls hang onto each other and cry for a moment then Terra says, ‘It’s ok. I’m not gonna let him die.” And, understanding, leaves Musa to her music. But headphones can’t shut out the sound of the Burned Ones banging on the walls!
In the courtyard terra walks right up past everybody and starts dismanteling the barricade! ‘We’re hiding when we should be fighting.” Silva tells her they’re gonna be fighting soon enough and indeed, here comes a Burned One through the roof! The boy fire fairy blasts it and Kat is ready to skewer the thing when it… passes them?
It’s looking for Bloom! Who was last seen sneaking out a trapdoor with Stella and Aisha! The banging stops, and Dowling figures out Bloom has left to draw the enemy away!
The girls emerge from the secret passage in the graveyard.
Harvey calls Terra over as she is clearly headed out to fight, but he says she needs to stay with her brother, to help him hold on until the Burned One is destroyed. Then Musa appears and takes Sam’s hand. She’ll help him as long as she can.
Outside Stella points out that her mom is on the way with a real live army, but Bloom says there’s no time for that. Rosalind taught her how to stop the Burned Ones but she has to do big magic and she’s not sure how that’ll work. She needs help. Aisha will be there with her water magic in case the forest catches fire, and Stella can hide them.
Bloom: “Rosalind wants me to believe that she’s the person I need to get through this. But she’s not.
Aisha pulls the water from the pond into a cyclone around Bloom. Bloon lights up her eyes and lifts off the ground and… transforms. Transforms-ish. Flames spiral around her arms and legs, and around her body. Bloom’s clothes don’t change but fiery veined wings open behind her, first very large then dwindling as Bloom lands back on the ground.
The designers definitely could’ve watched PGSM to get this, if they then decided to tone things way down. And why not change her clothes? I’m sure they could’ve managed something. As a live action transformation sequence it’s… ok. They were trying for something cool and they had some good ideas how to get there, the fie spirals were good, but they needed to really run with it and they didn’t. So it’s just ok.
And how the night did Rosalind know the long lost secret of how to transform?
Burned Ones advance and Bloom blasts them with fire one after another. When the last one is down, her wings go out. And where the Burned Ones fell are… specialists? People, anyway.
Dowling arrives and Bloom collapses in her arms, then Aisha and Stella rush over to help. “We did it.’
Inside Sam suddenly feels much better! Terra hugs Musa. The lights come back on.
In the greenhouse too, where Beatrix and the boys are ready to bring the bad ending! I still smell a bad ending, because we just had a good ending but there’s twenty minutes more to go! The boys say they should rejoin their classmates but Beatrix says they should wait to meet Rosalind and her dad, who have a plan. ‘The two of you can be part of it. This doesn’t have to end.”
Dane asks if it was her dad who sent her to Alfea and B says he’s technically not her dad… and here’s Rosalind coming in the greenhouse doors. She and Beatrix recognize each other though they can’t have met. B says the boys are her friends and Rosalind reads their minds. I wanna say the boys are wondering what they’ve gotten into but… no, they don’t seem to be seeing anythuing wrong with this at all.
The girls are putting Bloom to bed, talking about the good ending they think they have. Sam will be fine, Terra’s great at doctoring and she’s sad she missed seeing Bloom’s wings. Tinkerbell is mentioned and I can just hear my friend cringing as they say Bloom’s wings were cooler than Tinkerbell’s. Bloom’s parents call and Aisha talks to them, covering for Bloom. She calls it her ‘one allocated lie of the week” which is weird. Bloom’s awake and fine, she could talk to her folks. Aisha says they’ve been having killer exams and the girls giggle.
Nobody says, ‘ohmigod the secret of wings was lost ages ago, what exactly did you do? help us all learn it!” which seems like a very obvious thing for everybody to be saying.
Also being all happy and going to bed while Rosalind and Beatrix are unaccounted for is a weird choice!
Silva and some specialists are scouting for her. No luck. They find Dowling with the bodies of the ex-Burned Ones.
Dowling: “Bloom transformed, Saul. She spent one night with Rosalind and unlocked ancient fairy magic, magic we thought was lost. She told Bloom the settlers of Aster dell weren’t civilians, they were blood witches.”
And Silva seems to believe it. Which of course means he killed his friend for no good reason. If it’s true. But if it’s true why didn’t Rosalind and Andreas tell the others, present evidence of the blood witches’ crimes, and make a plan to deal with things aboveboard? So why does Silva believe it now hearing from Dowling who heard from Bloom who heard from Rosalind well after the fact? But he does believe it and this is his awful moment of guilt.
Sky too is grappling with what he’s just learned, pacing on the lawn outside the school as the night ends.
Bloom finds him as the sun rises and I gotta say, I was not expecting the night to end! Everyone heard Bloom “went full fairy last night.” Bloom says it was the first time she truly felt like herself. She says, “I belong here.” but she realizes Sky is in the same clothes as last night and asks if he’s ok. He says he’s fine, which he isn’t.
Then Dowling comes looking for Bloom. The two fairies go into the headmistress’ office. Bloom’s feeling ok after her big magic, and suddenly she apologizes for all the awful things she’s said to Dowling. “You found me when I was lost, brought me to a safe place, gave me guaidance. Surrounded me with amazing people. And I’ve been...’
Dowling says, ‘It’s forgiven.” And Bloom hesitantly asks for a hug, or maybe offers one. Dowling looks like she’s never heard of hugs before, then she stands up and she and Bloom hug. Dowling totally gets teary-eyed.
Dowling: “When I became headmistress I made a decision. To become a figurehead. To project strength. It’s what students your age need. Admitting mistakes invites uncertainty...but not admittng them means people you care about have to ask you if you hug.”
Awwww, that was sweet! Dowling says she should have been more honest and Bloom says she maybe needed time.
...are we maybe NOT having a bad ending? I mean if Stella confronts her mum that would take up the time and we could end on a good note! Nobody’s dead yet! But all that bad-ending buildup...
‘Cause suddenly we’re back on Earth and Bloom is going to tell them the truth! Which, what good will that do them? And do you even know the truth? People told you lots of things. And the rest of the girls are here to hang out over the weekend! They head upstairs so Bloom can drop the “changeling” bomb in peace.
Music plays, Bloom speaks and her mother cries and looks at a baby book, ultrasounds and a newborn hospital bracelet. They believe it too, the whole mad story of fairies and magic. Of course Bloom summoning double handfuls of fire probably does a lot to convince them.
Sweet family montage, Bloom hugging her parents, the girls at the kitchen table, eating pizza.
Back at Alfea, Silva asks Sky where Riven is. Sky just says he and Dane are probably off getting stoned. When is this? Did y’all not do a full headcount after the battle? Sky is of course not happy with his mentor. Silva just says, ‘one day I hope you’ll see everything I did was for your benefit Sky.” Which, if Silva’s parenting produced Sky the paragon of decency and Andreas’ parenting produced Beatrix the occasionally charming also slutty obsessed murderer, good point there!
Here come some doomful black SUVs! They pull around and out hop a bunch of soldiers who surround the two confused guys.
Queen Luna gets out and… arrests Silva for the attempted murder of Andreas of Eraklyon!
Yow! Poor Silva looks most confused. But there he is, Andreas gets out of an SUV still wearing his specialist vest thingy. Sky looks at his resurrected father in shock!
Dowling is looking over some graves. Rosalind suddenly turns up! Turns out the Burned Ones are a sort of zombie, they were human once so when Bloom turned them human again and dead Dowling buried them. I hope she tried to find their next of kin and stuff too. Rosalind knew about them.
Dowling: “Are there more out there?”
Rosalind: “Shit ton.”
Rosalind must’ve already met Riven, his speech patterns are rubbing off on her!
And then Rosalind delivers the prophecy. There always is one. Or in this case, “There’s a legend. It’s a thousand years old. That’s how old the Burned Ones are, by the way. They were soldiers from an ancient war. The legend is about the magic used against them. It created them. it’s powerful. It’s primal. The Dragon Flame.”
Whaaaaaat? Really? Come on.
And that’s what Bloom’s got and that’s why she could transform. Rosalind let the Burned Ones into the school to see if Bloom could do it. Dowling’s upset about the danger to, y’know, everybody.
Rosalind: “there’s a war on the horizon. The Burned Ones are nothing compared to what’s coming.”
And Rosalind says she’s taking over the school, pretty much. We go back to the front yard where Silva’s getting hauled away in handcuffs and Queen Luna is giving the ordersy and there’s Beatrix watching and inside someone’s taking down Dowling’s portrait and putting up Rosalind’s.
Soldiers march into the greenhouse and Harvey and Sam smile weakly, smart enough not to try anything against six big dudes.
We learn that Andreas has been in hiding all these years because “I needed someone to raise Beatrix.” Uh, wow Andreas is one obedient guy! He also looks a little nutty. I dunno, the very regal beard… it’s too much somehow. Next to him Beatrix smiles at Riven and Dane who are I guess her loyal retainers now.
And then, infodump over… Rosalind straight up MURDERIZES Dowling! Well first she suggests Dowling might want to run away and take some time off, but Dowling is having none of that so Rosalind kills her! And then angry rock music plays as Dowling’s body sinks into the ground and flowers come up over her, making one more grave.
The girls return from their weekend on earth wearing the awful clothes from the trailer and discover… not the three adults they were expecting!
Well that was… something. You got the bad ending all right!
So lemme scroll up and see how good my guesses were…
Nobody but Dowling died, so my death guesses were wrong. And if she’s an earth fairy she might be able to heal herself under the ground or something, I mean weirder things happen in this kind of show. Bloom did indeed doom the school by releasing Rosalind.
We learned what I guess is the truth of Aster Dell, but... unforeshadowed blood witches? Reeeeeally!? That’s what you’re going with? And we found out Burned Ones are ancient zombies created by the unforeshadowed Dragon Flame which Bloom has for some reason. You’re supposed to foreshadow the important stuff for the night’s sake! That’s how things have weight in your story, that’s how you make the world feel real like the parts of it are connected to the other parts of it! The lack of worldbuilding has been bugging me more and more, can you tell?
Anyway we get a season two. I’m pleased because I’ve enjoyed plenty of aspects of Fate, but on the other hand… Fate has turned the already weird Winx fandom into a pit of radioactive rage-bees, and I won’t be sad to put that behind us!
So what about the big question? Good, bad or irredeemable?
I expected to judge how Fate lines up as a Winx Club show, but it… just doesn’t. At all. None of the characters are the same, none of the worldbuilding is the same. It’s apples to oranges.
But as just a show… I think I’d have to go with “bad.” The way the world feels so flimsy, all the really obvious bits of Otherworldbuilding that just aren’t there until the end, or aren’t there at all. All the Earth popular culture references. Beatrix being stuck in a slut stereotype role. All the drugs. All the everyone’s lying to everyone about everything, it got really tiresome. Those things knock the show out of the “good” category.
But there was a lot to like. I have to say, all the actors did a really good job. Given the semi-mess they had to work with, they gave it all they had! Stella was so awful but put across that she’s terrible because she’s terrified. Sky was a truly good person. Beatrix and Riven are objectively terrible people but both had moments of being so charming it was hard to hate them. And Dowling, Silva and Harvey managed to hold up this flimsy worldbuilding and almost make it work. The magic was flimsy but pretty and the castle and the forest are absolutely stunning.
So it’s not good, but there’s something there. So it’s not irredeemable, though there’s a lot we have to wallpaper over with it. I’m’a go with “Bad. The show has charms but is in general bad.”
At least that’s what I think after a five-hour marathon of the last episode! We’ll see what occurs to me in days to come!
Excalibur #1: “The Accolade of Betsy Braddock”
As the magic of Krakoa seeps into Otherworld and puts Morgan Le Fay in a genocidal mood, Betsy Braddock tries to find her place in the new world while also dealing with her idiot brother.. but you know instead of Paul Rudd she has a reality warping man child with mental instablity. Meanwhile Apocalypse adopts an unprouncable name and a new misson statment as a wizard man, Gambit suppresses the urge to kill him and Goldballs tries a new somehow even worse name out.
Welcome back. Due to yesterday being kinda nuts, and the last review being more taxing than planned, this one is kinda late. But better late than never as dawn of X continues it’s win streak with Excalibur, back and better than ever. And thankfully this time, the exposition is all really easy to bake in as we go compared to my last few reviews, so without any delay, it’s time to forge the sword once again. This is Tini Howard and Marcus To’s Excalibur.
We open on a long info page revealing that when Xavier gave his big “While you Slept the world changed” or, to put it more acuratley “All I wanted was to love you , to help you to save your asses and all you did was either try to kill us, look away while others did, or make a token effort at best to help. Fuck you, we’re taking what’s ours bitches. “ speech, Apocalypse gave his own, in a sense telling Humankind “Magic is ours to take back now.... “
We cut to the present where Morgan Le Fay is in Otherworld, basically the court of king arthur, the source of Captain Britan’s power, and a realm created by the british public’s collective subconscious. I don’t get it either. But Morgan Le Fay, Arthur’s evil sister and long time pain in the ass of the Avengers in the 616, has taken over in his absence and nearly drowns one of her minons upon finding something in her well.. a weed affecting it.. and since the x-men have a plant motif and apocalypse made a big MINE NOW speech to the rest of the world.. it’s easy to see Krakoa’s involved. Nice work Apocalypse, your on Krakoa one week and you’ve already pissed off the neighbors.
After the opening titles, we cut to Braddock Academy, basically the british version of Xavier’s and Avengers Academy and unsurprisingly a pet project of Brian’s. Since the school is also the Braddock ancestral home, Betsy’s been crashing here while sorting things out after getting her original body back. Yeah for those of you not that familiar with Psylocke, which I am not but know at least this much, was body swapped with the Assian Kwannon. That was reversed shortly before Dawn of X, which in order to help smooth the transition has given each their own starring roll. And really it is an intresting thing to explore: Betsy spent 5 or 6 years in a body that was not her own, living her life, loving, and doing bloody awful things in the name of the greater good. So it’s no suprise being put back in her old body after all this time and the implications of having basically lived her life in someoen elses skin with the other person now having it back and being understandably pissed about it, having only not gotten it back sooner due to dying of the Legacy Virus. Thankfully this issue dives deep into it and we’ll explore it more as we go.
The child loudly complaning is Margaret, Brian and Meggan’s daughter. Margret is one of the few things Mark Guggenheim’s run on X-Men did that was all that intresting as, probably thanks to a combination of her dad’s magical man juice and her mom’s already shifting genetics, can already talk in full sentences and comprehend stuff at the tender age of 1. Betsy is of course heading to Krakoa but much like Kitty last week, she’s unsure. But it still works: Kitty was unsure because Krakoa, for whatever reason, basically rejected her and staying would just make her a ghost again. For Betsy, she’s gone from living in a stranger’s body and back again and is understandably frazzled and unsure of tommorow.
But as Brian escorts her to the portal on his property, a touch I like as Meggan is a mutant herself and Brian is a longtime ally so it makes perfect sense to put a portal down there both for his mutant students to depart and for Meggan to visit without having to leave her husband behind, he encourages her. This is something I love about the issue: most x-runs I see betsy in kinda forget she has a brother and Uncanny X-Force turned him into an asshole. Here, their close bond and past, she was a supporting character in his book first after all, is shown beautifully as Brian , while happy to have her back, wants her to move on with her life and knows she’ll do great.
As also seen above Betsy wishes their brother could join them though Brian isn’t so sure. I didn’t really get into Jamie in the other review, and i’m pleased as punch to get here there. Jamie is their older brother.. and also has schizophrenia and the power of god, two tastes that instead create a rancid punch that threatns all life as Jamie dosen’t think anything else is real. Despite this, Betsy wishes he’d be there to see it and hopes it’d make him better. After all if Apocalypse can find a new start here why not him? They literally have worse people on the island.
Speaking of the devil, after Betsy makes her awkward entrance, we cut to Apocalypse who’s of course standing out a window watching everything meancingly, because even when he’s on the good guy side and no longer plotting horribly Darwinian crimes.. he’s still a super villian deep down and old habits die hard. He’s visited by Trinary, a fairly new x-character introduced in X-Men Red, she’s a technopath, as well as one of the brain trust running Krakoa’s computer network. Also as you can see apocapse want’s to be called by his weird Krakoan name.. i’m just going to stick with Apocalypse as I assume it’s the same thing and even Tini Howard herself has flat out admitted she dosen’t have a translation for it and just scripts him as Apocalypse still. He also gets dagger eyes from everyone’s faviorite Cajun as he makes his villianous rant.
Remy does however have more reason than most to hate the man: He was one of Apocalypse’s horseman once: he attempted to go under cover, but underestimated how good the horseman process was and would up having to go to Mr.Sinister of all people to get himself back to normal. So yeah, having the guy who turned you into a monster that tried to kill your future wife, KINDA makes you not willing to have a ham sammich with the guy. Trinary came to fetch Apocalypse to check out a new gate that opened.. to otherworld.. the problem is Morgan sealed it, and thus Apocalypse , not being a moron, decides they need “a champion” to break it. And since Hercules is on a three month no pants cruise of the bahamas right now, he’s going to have to be less literal about it. Meanwhile MOrrigan is an asshole to a coven of sorcerers decreeing that they failed her by.. letting mutants exist. Yeah the one weakspot I have with the book thus far is the opening villianess: Morgan Le Fay simply isn’t that intresting and while she’s had a good storyline or too here she’s pissy because.. mutants found magic again. It isn’ t a terrible motive but her steroptical villaness “take my anger out out my minons” stuff is just tiresome and not at all entertaining. She’s the right level of threat for this book, just not fleshed out about enough and is the one real dry spot in this issue.
Back on Krakoa, Betsy runs into Kwannon and it’s.. about as awkard as you’d expect as you can see.. and really isn’t helping Betsy’s unease. And I actually, despite not having read a ton of comics with Betsy in them get why she’s so uneasy besides the obvious problems of having the woman whose face you stole around all the time: she has no idea what to do. Everyone else on Krakoa, for the most part at least, is fully on board with the new plan, rairing to go. Sure some understandably object to their old foes being there… but theirs a sense of optimism and wonder and happy.. that just dosen’t go with someone who has so much blood on her hands she looks like she took a guys heart out with her bear hands, is in a body that hasn’t been home in years, and has to look the person who’s body she stole, intentional or not, and didn’t put any effort into bringing back from the dead or once she was back giving her her body back in the face. She’s just not in a great place. Thankfully even if her old pal Jubilee dosen’t pick up on this she does get Betsy could probably use some booze. Unfortunatley pressing matters keep her from finding out if krakoa can pour mimosa’s directily into her mouth via some kind of hose bush:
It’s your pal and mine goldballs, one of the five mutants able to raise the dead (but the car is fine). Or Egg I guess but I’m not calling him that. For one goldballs is a far better name just for the ridiculous factor. For another, just call yourself goldeggs. It’s still dumb but egg is somehow dumber. Even add a Z if you want no one cares. Your one of Krakoa’s own personal jesus’. You could rip a person’s throat out and no one would care… though granted that’s also because death is now meaningless for mutants. But yeah as you can see he has a problem and it’s Jamie.
And yup Jamie is back, alive and while not trying to kill everyone, is still kind of a weird asshole. Also I do not want to know what he did in there but I presume he fucked at least one person. Maybe he made them out of thin air, maybe they just came in. Maybe Sinister decided why not. Either way he’s fouling up the pods, and soon puts his foot in his mouth by saying Betsy’s classic look reminds him of better times right after their parents died. However in a nice little character bit he quickly apologizes, showing he has genuinely changed thanks to his resurrection on some level, and admits that the real reason is because they were all together then and all happy. As for why he’s a nusiance, it’s simple: while ressurectees DO need time to recover from you know, the whole being dead thing, it usually takes about ten minutes for the shock to wear off. And while there’s clearly no shock left Jamie is just farting around. Betsy’s response is to treat him like a ten year old.
It..actually works.. but unfortunately Jamie has about as much intrest in seeing Brian as Brian does in seeing him. And I see why: before he went insane, Jamie was still a supervillian and still hunted brian out of jealousy, while Jamie.. is just kind of a dick. He’s like Krakoa’s own discord: he’s not an apocalyptic godlike threat to the world any more but he will fuck with you just for cheap laughs. Betsy tries using her telepathy to force him to go but Fabio stops her, as it upsets the eggs apparently and decides to drag Brian here, something even Jamie can see as a bad idea. And when the naked man whose been back for all of 5 minutes can see the holes in your plan, maybe you rethink things. But I also get why Betsy is trying so hard at this: She has almost no stablity left and Brian has been her rock, past and present. But Jamie is still her brother and now has the potetinal to do good and while still a loon, is no longer a genocidal madman and is stubbornly refusing to reconcile because he’s decided to swear off humanity. She just wants her family whole and her brothers not trying to kill each other, but is in too bad a state to recognize they need time and may NEVER get along. it’s how it is with family. Dosen’t mean she has to choose one or the other. Brian wouldn’t make her and frankly Jamie isn’t dumb enough to try that. Thankfully apocalypse interupts Betsy’s extrodinarly bad plan to ask her about the gate.. and point out that Brian himself would be the best way and that, even as a half human, he’d be welcome here in this crisis. He probably get some leeway since apparently the captain britan thing makes him half otherworlder and he is a cosmic champion versus just some joe who wants to enjoy a paradise he hasn’t earned thorugh hard work or nearly dying a bunch.
Betsy heads to Braddock Manor where Brian is already planning on going to Otherworld to fix this and is naturally not all that inclined to listen to Apocalypse. So as seen above Betsy goes with plan B: She’s going with him even if it’s a trap because fighting alongside her brother doing the right thing is better than moping around an island trying to dodge Kwannon. This also gives me a nice opprotunity to bring up Betsy’s approach to their former enemies. She’s far more accepting than the rest, even Logan outright objected, but I also easily get why: She’s former black ops, having served on one version of X-Force and lead the one right after it. She understands the need for pragmatism and is a pragmatic person. It’s probably why she’s so willing to forgive Jamie: yeah he did terrible things, but at his worst he was mentally ill, and as established by X-Men #1, Krakoa has terrific healthcare and telepaths and empaths to help him work through his issues. He may not WANT to of course, but he’s more likely to and him slowly improving in paradise is better than her brother just being dead to her as a genocidal mad man. They encounter Morgan who, being basically a 50′s disney villian, expects Brian as otherworld’s champion to start drowning his own sister.. because fuck subtley.
Back on Krakoa we meet up with Rouge and Gambit. As a tiny bit of exposition for you lapsed ex fans the two are now married. The two reconciled in the excellent Rouge and Gambit mini series, hashing out their long and messy history. Then X-Men gold happened.. see there was SUPPOSED to be a wedding of Colosus and Kitty.. but their reconcilation was so terribly forced no one wanted the wedding and editoral had gambit, of course, steal The Wedding. So the two are in a happy place, though Rouge dosen’t want to use her power dampener on paradise, understandable as said dampener is a repurposed anti-mutant thing and it’d be like brining a pile of nazi gold as your present to a jewish wedding. Rouge then decides , as shown above ot bring up the idea of having kids but before Gambit can say “of course”, Trinary summons them for apocalypse. Apocalypse needs Rouge as he figures her absoprtion power might allow her to serve as a gateway, and a way to retrieve Betsy. Remy, Understandably, dosen’t want her to do this But Rogue is willing to take the risk to save her friend. Remy , now tenativley on board, suggestings bringing in Jubes since she was the last one to talk to Betsy, but A-Train is way ahead of them.
Naturally, having talked to her all of one sentence, she has nothing. Also curiously apparently Apocalypse wanted Jubes to bring her son, adopted if you didn’t knokw about him, Shogo with her but shockingly she didn’t want to bring her son to see the scary blue man who had no trouble trying to do a murder on a child when she was younger. However Apocalypse really needs her as a bridge between minds: Rouge will touch the portal to break through it and Gambit will keep watch and is all too happy to. As a side note i’d lvoe to see apocalypse babysit “So you see small infant, after that I cleaved the flesh off his skull and put said skull on a pile as a warning to my enimies. You always want to get the flesh nice and clean off.. .the bits create more of a smell and you need to think of the smell. Speaking of the smell I think someone needs a changie!”
I would too, but i’m pretty sure Remy would be a ground smear, but I think Apocaypse does respect his willingess to try anyway even if he dosen’t take gambit serious as a threat.
Back in crazy magic lady town Morgan is slowly corrupting Brian, and despite Betsy’s best attempts to stop it, is quickly turned into a warped dark knight who’s trying to shove the amulet of right in her face for some reason.
But with Apocalypse plan in motion, she figures out what’s going on and destroys the portal.. unfortuantley for Rogue this causes to feel weird and then well.. this is the end result.
What exactly the fuck dosen’t even begin to describe this.
Back in King Arthur’s House, Trinary’s words not mine, Betsy tries to kick Morgan’s ass but Dark Brian blocks her… before the above happens.. and it’s clear WHY he was cramming the amulet down her throat... Morrigan has full control of him, he can’t do anything to stop her.. but he can pass it on so she can hopefully stop her or , if he can’t be freed, destroy him before he harms anyone else. He sends her back to the real world as Betsy wails> This scene is damn powerful, as we’ve seen before Brian was one of the few people who understood she was going through some shit and offered her his full support... and now he’s gone, no idea how to rescue him, leaving a wife and daughter behind.
Back on Krakoa things arne’t much better wirth Rouge int he flower cocoon I showed earlier and Gambit ready to blow Apocalypse’s head off.. and as you can see Apocalypse is like “Fine i’ll come back from it stronger, but can you please wait? We’ve got a lot of shit going down. But before Apocalypse can pound Remy into a Cajun Corpse, the assembled group is distracted by a returning Betsy.
And so we end on Betsy, now fully crowned once again as Captain Britain, wondering what the fuck is up with Rogue. We get a quick Epilogue where one of the covern from earlier joins a cult based on the same one related to apocayplypse and we’re out. ‘Final Thoughts: Excalibur #1 is a good start. While some things don’t quite gel, Otherworld isn’t explained at all for those who have never heard of it (raises hand), it feels fresh and makes me invested in Betsy’s struggle, the tragedy Brian goes through, Remy’s fury and Apocalypse, who for once gets to serve as a wise sage instead of a warrior and it’s an intresting role for him, as well as him clearly being set up to mentor Betsy as she rises higher than ever before with her new role. It makes you want to see what comes next and the only real drawback is that Jubilee is basically a tagalong while Rictor is entirely absent, but both I suspect will be fixed with time. As fhte first part of a story, and the first Dawn of X Comic to be part of an arc since the two mini series that launched it, it works well setting things up. As I said the comic suffers from a lack of exposition on Otherworld and from a weak villain, but it’s not enough to distract from this fun, well crafted fantasy and I can’t wait to see what comes next. Until next time, hail to the queen baby.
Ocean au (Pool of Blood part 2)
N/A: something to further this plot. A small one but the plot is kicking. I think.
@djinmer4 @dannybagpipesarecalling @bamfoftheundead
When one thing about magic, and it´s all possibilities, hardly one comes to the question "how magic breathes its first breath" because, for someone, magic is just there and will always be there, but, if you ask to Wanda Maximoff where magic start she´ll have a blast in telling all the theories she has.
Pietro knows about this. Her husband Victor knows about this and their kids know about this too. Yet, her theories and the many other wizards who delve into the subject hardly come into a consensus in regards to the question.
The best outcome that Scarlet Witch and Dr StrangeFate managed to offer to people if they really ask this question, is that this is a gift from Hecate, mother of magic, and how if you truly believe you can wielder its magic in all proprieties in your favour.
Like said before, is only a theory and no one is crazy enough to summon Hecate to make this question. Right now, Wanda´s mind is far further from the answer to this question as she´s watching her kids rehearsing for the big school play.
"Mom, you won´t do that, right?" Tommy asks pouty. "We´re just trees in this story"
"Yeah, mom, we´re just trees, dad we´re just tress" Billy agrees and Wanda and Victor smile as they show the cameras.
"Sorry, kiddo, we´ll take pictures like all the other parents, plus you two will be the cutest trees ever" And this prompts the twins to be embarrassed even more so when Wanda promised their uncle Pietro will be there to take pictures and be their fanboys. Is a nice gesture, but, they´ll still be embarrassed.
The crystal ball lights up and Tommy is the first to run to see it and waves as Dr StrangeFate is present with one cat and one dog on his lap, and Tommy says the dog looks mad at Dr StrangeFate.
"Hello, Wanda, I was doing some research and I was wondering if you know anything about Pool of Blood" is his straightforward question and Wanda frown as is visible something is up.
Her eyes land on the two animals on his lap and realization hits her. "No, I not, but, why you want to know?"
"As I said is research and nothing more. I thought you could have a leading clue about this phenomenon, but, is not important" and turns off the communication and everyone in this house, including the kids, can sense something is off.
"Dad, what´s a Pool of Blood?"
"Is a monstrosity that creates monsters"
Wanda has a bad feeling about this and she vows to call Columbina about what her animals are, but, at the moment. "Come on, little trees, you have to end the song, right?" and the boys whine together but continue to sing the lame song, in their humble opinion, for this school play.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
The communication is cut short after all and Cosmo and Jupiter are not happy with Dr StrangeFate and the man knows he´s travelling in thin ice now, but, the Pool of Blood is malicious enough to cause harm and Wanda´s powers are a delicatessen for that thing.
"Let me be in her place, my powers won´t attract the attention of that thing and I know more magic than her" Dr StrangeFate speaks his case and Cosmo shakes his head as 4 eyes begin to emerge in his face and his body begins to grow.
Jupiter is nearby, walking on the corners, watching and waiting, he could end everything so easily, but, at the same time, is so rare to see Jupiter do something this drastic. Celestial mother loves monsters more than humans, but, she loves being a contradiction. Ironic, Jupiter´s patron is straightforward in his intentions.
"And what can you do to stop a Pool of Blood? How can you end it?" The dog asked bemused as the hot breath leaves his mouth. And Dr StrangeFate is left with his own mind and witts now.
"I could freeze the Pool and take it out"
"Can you freeze blood? Her blood?"
"....I´d not know"
The dog shakes his furry head and utters some Latin words, no, ancient words from other planet and time as Dr StrangeFate´s infinity stone is removed from him. "Remember, human, this power can be given and taken, and I´m her son, now, about our other plan...do you will help or not?"
"I obey Celestial Mother, her will is mine will" and this would be over if Cosmo didn´t set on fire one of Dr StrangeFate´s machines. The fire is blue and burns the machine in one go.
"Don´t go make questions your mind is not ready for the answer...and to resurrect the deads only brings problems" Cosmo replied shifting to his "normal" appearance and Jupiter still remains in silence, peering through the human´s soul. This one is different from universe 616.
"As for Columbina, you keep your mouth shut, got it?" Cosmo speaks still under the fire and Dr StrangeFate knows no blade or spell or even venom can take down Cosmo.
In the life of espionage, one thing you must always have in your mind is how to leave the scene and this is one of MJ´s best qualities if she can say so. And right now, the red hair and her assistant, Peni Parker, need to flee for their lives, but, of course, still in the characters, they are pretending to be. A lovely aunt and niece having fun in the glamorous part of New Gotham.
"I knew it! Coming to New Gotham is always bad news" MJ is complaining as she packs her package in the most calmly and aggressive way one can imagine while Peni, doing her package without caring about the order is just saying how New Gotham was not that bad.
"It has everything here. Nice buildings, nice people and...vampires" Peni states as she has her gun on position and MJ has only time to look Dark Claw and Spider-boy on their balcony.
"Are you going to shoot at me?" Dark Claw asked and the man´s voice is frightening on its own but as he stands up the effect increase 10 times more and MJ does not want Peni to die.
"I´d not know, vampire, you´re the one peeping on innocent women, not very heroic, is it?" Peni asked still with the gun in hands and she shoots Dark Claw, but, thanks to the healing factor, the wound heals the man right away.
MJ looks at Spider-boy who notices her peering gaze at him, hard to not notice, and speaks to calm down the situation, if is possible. "We mean no harm here, Dark Claw just want to be dramatic, in reality, we would like to ask if you would rather work for us...in the future"
MJ crosses her arms and exhales as her green eyes are far from pleased. "Do we really have a choice? If we say no...how can we know you´ll not throw us in jail....we´re far too valuable to you all to ever let us go" MJ states bemused.
"So, I guess, me and Peni have to stay on the JLX´s side, right?"
"Or else" Dark Claw speaks "you would rather face Kilmonger on your own, you think he wouldn´t use you two again?" and Peni and MJ exchanges looks as they really don´t want to tangle themselves between Wakanda and Kilmonger.
"Well, it seems Spider-boy puts the news nicely than you, Mr vampire" Peni states and an agreement is made, MJ may not like, but, this is the lesser of evils in her situtation. _________________________________________________________________________________________
Kurt Ryder is googling on the internet, yes sometimes even him has to rely on good and old Google, to get information about Kitty Pryde, and to his surprise, the internet has nothing useful to tell. Aside from some cat videos and some cat porn (no, Ryder does not need to know about Cats the hentai), he found next to nothing, except this one article.
"Brave little girls escape certain death by sheer luck" he reads the title and notices it has a photo of Kitty Pryde when she was younger, and a girl with green hair who is hugging Kitty (the said girl is smaller than Kitty) and continues to read "according to the police, the Ferris wheel went malfunction in the exact moment those two girls decided to join in and it was a miracle that they didn´t die, but, no one knows how the Ferris Wheel malfunction in the first place as...it was turn off in the first place, investigation will be issued and the Amusement Park Happy Land will be closed"
Kurt Ryder, if he was a less experient detective, could let this information go as it appears to be irrelevant, however, Kurt is an excellent detective and looking at the legend of the photo of the two girls he notices something crucial.
"Kitty Pryde and Lorna Dane Pryde. Two lucky survivors."
"That´s...something"
On a secret lair, a villain that the JLX hopes is really retired and will never come back to the good old days, is watching a fascinating video on the big screen thanks to his secretary/ sometimes lover provide for him. Magneto is watching a green-haired woman using her power to help someone, Magneto has no idea who is this person, but, it appears she is taking him out of the prison.
"Interesting" Magneto states. "Oracle once told me I have a lost daughter...could this be my lost daughter" and smiles proudly as the video ends with the green-haired woman taking the unknown person away.
Meanwhile, Irene has a small smile on her face. Oh, her old prophecies are coming together.
The cellphone rings loudly and Kitty answers and is no surprise to know is Jubilee as the TV is showing the news of a person is missing in the Arkhan, but, the twist in the news is that such person was actually not who he claimed to be, which means, the police make a mistake and the system arrested an innocent. And this happened in Jump City.
"Hello, Jubs" Kitty speaks still peering at the news and is impressed by Kurt and Peter´s professionalism even through Kurt confessed to Kitty, once thanks to a nice mood and delicious food, that sometimes is a pain work with Peter (and Kitty wonder if Peter thinks the same)
"Kitty, your sister was here!" and is all Jubile needs to say about the situation and Kitty can picture the image just fine.
"And let me guess? You want me to do something?"
"No, I want you to help me with a case, your sister unmask a crook system here but has no intention of helping..."
She takes the cellphone out to mutters tiredly the name Lorna and that´s the mood for this situation. "Ok, but, I´ll need a favour too if Kurt Ryder asks about me...tell him I´m a sexologist"
"Do I want to know?"
"NOPE"
"Then ok, I´ll cover for you"
"Then...guess I´ll go to Jump City"
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Sometime later, Cosmo arrives with Jupiter on his back and meet Kitty eating popcorn and greeting them, however, the cat and dog have a concern expression on their furry faces. "Someone watch Cats the movie?" and Kitty is the only to chuckle as Jupiter is not happy. "What happened?"
"Kitty, you need to gather the gang to a new heist. This time...you need to steal a Pool of Blood!"
"....sounds crazy, I´m in"
~CLOSED RP WITH HECATE AND OIZYS FOR MEMBERS OF MISFIT DEITIES. CURRENTLY ON PAUSE UNTIL IDEA FOR CONTINUING OCCURS.~ ~Hecate:
Hecate was a Goddess with an agenda and lately that agenda had been to create her own witches, the many faced Goddess was rather...Lonely. She had no one to spend her time with and she wanted someone who understood her life, and what it was like to have magic coursing through their veins. Hecate had selected another woman from the other side. Many years ago Hecate had mastered the power of Necromancy it was one of her favirote was to sculpte her new witches, taking a woman or male who had been scorned, betrayed or simply taken too soon form the wowrld. She felt they understood her better, had more depth, if you will. With her new witch selected she began to work, crushing herbs, repating incantations, using her magic to the bone before the woman's dark frame began to rise form the underworld. First, it was just a skelton, still a piece of the dead but as Hecate contuined her spells the woman began to form more and more, skin, hair, features melting into the proper place until the female was how she had once been in life, except now her veins were filled with not only blood, but magic as well but as soon as the woman was formed and put together she felt a strong touch. Another goddess had claimed this woman in her past life. Hecate looked up addressing the dark haired woman, What is your name?" The woman paused, a funny expression on her face. "Leto." She paused, "Leto Mallory..." With a sigh Hecate knew who had claimed her, the Goddess of Misery. Grabbing the woman's hand she made them appear inside of Oizys house. "Now, who is this woman to you, Miss Misery?" ~Oizys:
Misery; a word she knew since her mothers death, one that she had caused, one out of a sheer accident, one caused out of... out of what? Oizys was only a child and had not known that the drink was laced, had not known she had the ability to feel a miserable moment before it were to happen. Her Victorian style home had authentic Victorian style furniture and decor a style she loved dearly and felt at peace with. Sitting in her grand velvet blood red chair, her black main coon cat hissed at the upcoming unannounced and bold goddess that dared entered her home. Setting her book down she castes her bright yellow hues over to the middle of the room where to two women materialized before her yet before she uttered a word, Oizys looked towards her mother. A frown one deeper than the Atlantic ocean was on the young goddess's face as she watched her mother. "How... How is she back?" She asked glancing towards Hecate, "Why did you bring my mother back!" She demanded in an angrily manner. ~Hecate:
Hecate smirked looking at the lovely decor of the Goddess home, She had to give it to her, She had style. "Nice place you have here." She said with a smile, completely ignoring the Goddess question about her mother. Spotting the main coon she grinned even wider. "Oh, a kitty. May a pet her?" Hecate knelled down on the floor. "Here kitty kitty." She cooed at the cat but when it ignored her she sighed and stood back up. "Well, I guess straight to business than." Hecate placed her hand on Oizys's mothers shoulder. "Now, I'm Hecate, Goddess of magic....necromancy.." She paused, letting it sink in on how her mother was back in the flesh. "I'm building a coven, taking the strongest woman who died to soon. Making them into the perfect witch. Bringing them back to life, but instead of just blood running through there veins magic will to." Hecate sat down in the empty Victorian style chair across from the other Goddess, Oizys's mother still at her side. "And i choice to bring back your mother into my coven. Isn't she lucky?" Hecate grinned proudly up at Oizy's mother, before looking back at the Goddess. "But when I reeled her up out of the underworld I realized another deity had laid claim to her. Little old you.: Hecate smiled kindly, "So, let her go out of your grips, or ill have no choice to just plop her back into the underworld once more. Which would mean you will never ever see her again."
~Oizys:
Such boldness, such rudeness and anger. Oizys could not contain what she had witnessed and heard from this witch goddess who brought her mother back from the underworld to be a witch, something her mother once said was a shame upon their people but yet Oizys herself was a shame. Born from a god and a human, a Demi god. Oizys watched as the goddess tried to pet her lovely pet but was pleased when the cat showed no interest to be petted. "You ask me to let you have my mother for your little growing clan of witches and if I do not comply then you send her back to the underworld." Her once bright amber eyes grew very dark. "You /dare/ ask me for such a thing! Yes I have claimed my mother over a mere accident! One she knows very well as I held her hand on her deathbed and begged the gods to not take her life." The anger, the hatred she had towards the gods was one that was not unknown, she hated all gods but yet she was one. "Why my mother? If you knew she was claimed why still pick her?"
~Hecate:
Hecate had to admit she was rather amused by the anger that was sweeping through the young demi goddess. You'd think someone would be pleased to see there mother up and about again. Hecate sighed as she sat down on the empty chair across from the woman's throne, crossing one leg over the other. "I had no way of knowing you had made claim to her until she was resurrected."She paused, "If you're not interested in letting go of her fine, But i have no choice to send her back to the underworld. Without myself the dead i have risen can not survive, They will be a simple shell of who they once were." Hecate wasn't necessary cruel and maybe if she could give her mother back she would for the right price but it simply was impossible. "If you don't want to give her away that is fine. I choice you're mother because she was taken by the God's too soon. I was merely offering a second chance to her. A better life, with magic. Ill be on my way." Hecate stood, her hand still on Oizys mother about to use her magic to go back to her home. ~Oizys:
Hesitant; that's what Oizys felt at this very moment, did she dare try to keep her mother alive? Was this worth it? The cat seemed to react to her emotions as she watched the lovely creature jump up on it's cat tree and watch with bright yellow eyes. "What... Are the pros and cons to such a thing? What'll happen to my mother if she were to remain this way?" Oizys found herself asking, not looking at Hecate only at her mother was Oizys mainly focusing on because her mother meant the world to her and maybe the Gods knew this. Oh how she wanted her mother more than anything, how she wanted to be in her mothers embrace again. "Mother, please forgive me, I did not mean to cause your death, I did not know that your drink was tainted," The young demi-goddess found herself on her knees only in front of her mother as the tears pooled and escaped her eyes. "If you wish to have my mother then I shall let her be free of the misery I have caused but all I ask is that I see her." She spoke to Hecate while on her knees.
~Hecate:
Hecate watched the feline as it jumped up on it's cat tree. She could have sworn there was some kind of deeper connection between the cat and her owner, Almost a familiar, and there master sort of bond. It intrigued her. "What's your cats name?" She asked, giving the Goddess time to think about everything going on as she asked about the cat. "Pros is shes alive, she has power like shes never had before, cons is shell remember you, but she won't remember all her previous memories. Only a select few from her first life and I can't tell you which ones shell keep and which shell forget. There's no way to know before hand." Hecate let out a small sigh as she watched the young Goddess, love was pain. Hecate watched the young Goddess on the floor tears running down her cheeks, pity filled Hecate as she watched the Goddess. "Oizys rise, the floor is no place for a Goddess. You're mother will still be your mother when this is over, with just selective memories." Hecate, helped the dark haired Goddess off the floor. "Im glad you consent. Now, you must stand back to back to your mother, Holding hands. Which i use my magic to disconnect the ties of misery from here and then attack her to me. The ties of magic. Once this is done you can't change your mind. There will be no way to get her back without my consent which will not be given." She looked at Oizys, her green eyes locked on hers. "Do you still wish to continue?"
~Oizys:
His name is Shadow." Oizys spoke as she came to a stand, wiping the tears that pooled her eyes, not once messing up her makeup, "He is my familiar, he knows my emotions before they come into play." She explained as she listened to Hecate explain the pros and cons of this new ordeal that is to become of her mother.
She will remember Oizys but not the memories of her childhood, taking a look at her mother, the same eyes they once shared no longer held the same color before looking back to Hecate, "So I am not allowed to see her without consent that still won't be given?" She shook her head at such a statement from the goddess in front of her.
Shall she continue or not? Shall she go on knowing such a thing?
~Hecate:
"I assumed he was. I can tell he has a very strong connection to you. Must be why he wont come over and get pets.: Hecate said with a small chuckle. "He is a beautiful cat tho." She said with a small nod to Oizys once she finished explaining the pros and cons of her work with her mother. "You may see her if you can find her. My coven is very protected, well hidden, it has years of spell work hiding the exact location of where I teach my students, but I could always take you and just erase your knowledge of where the hide out it is if you prefer." Hecate was playing fair and kind, she wanted Oizys mother in her coven and she could tell this Goddess was stubborn but the older goddess was starting to get impatient. "I know it's a big decision, Trust me I do understand, and how i do enjoy our talks i have to admit im growing rather bored." Hecate let out a long, large dramatic sigh . "Ill just take your answer as no and lay your mother back to rest." Hecate hummed, Putting her hand on Oizys mother's shoulder to bring her back to her hidden home.
~Oizys:
Well your assumption is correct." Oizys said as she looked back to the goddess asshe listened to her explain about finding her mother due to them being well hidden. As she watched for the second time they attempt to leave, Oizys waved her hand casting a dark whirl around them, "Ill do the damn thing, personally I think she should lay to rest its disrespectful to bring the dead back but since I miss her terribly I will comply since my dear father is gone from my life. Last I want is my mother being gone from mine as well."
~Hecate:
"You know. Goddess of magic, its kinda my job." She said with a small smirk to the younger Goddess. Hecate licked her lips softly, thinking for a moment. This was a lot of work for one witch, Hecate just hoped she wouldn't fail her expectations. "Very well. You'll just have to stand back to back, hands touching." Hecate took Oizys mother hand, leading her to the middle of the room before looking at Oizys to come over. Her mother was still in an almost "zombie" like state, and would be until Oizys unleashed her ties on her and Hecate could finish the reanimation process.
~Oizys;
Walking over to the middle of the room with Shadow in tow, Oizys looked at her mother and turned around with her back towards her mother while taking a deep breath to calm herself down from what was to come. Shadow merely watched sitting on his hind legs flicking his tail back and forth with his eyes narrowed watching Hecate carefully.
~Hecate:
Hecate glanced over at shadow, it was a shame he didn't like her, him and alice, her familiar, could have had a fun play date. Watching the two connect hands like she they had been instructed the words of the spell came pouring out of Hecates mouth. The langue was one that most would never understand, a very very old tongue that she only taught to certain people in her coven but Oizys was interesting, Hecate wouldn't put it past, she may know the langue. After minutes red energy lines showed in the space around Oizys and her mother. Pulling a large dagger out of her pocket she muttered the incantation over and over as she sliced through the energy lines, breaking the ties between Oizys and her mom. Oizys mum fell to the floor but this time when she rose she woul have magic in her veins.
~Oizys;
The black feline narrowed his eyes as he just watched the scene unfold taking his owners feelings into consideration and to hopefully calm her if things go wrong. The young goddess herself held a rigid posture as soon as the knife and words were out, yes a language she has learned out of boredom. When the ordeal was over, Oizys stepped away and watched her mother fall like a nothing, maybe it's because her bones didn't hold up any longer or just because the tie between the two were broken that is unknown.
~Hecate:
The ties were broken and Hecate watched as Oziys mother laid there. After a moment she walked over, Opening her mothers mouth and blowing into it. A purple smoke left Hecate's body and entered Oizys's mothers. The final piece of the resurrection. Her mother sat up bolt straight her eyes looking on Oizys. "Where am i?" she asked turning to Hecate. "Who are you?" Hecate let out a small hum. "All in good time love."
~Oizys:
Oizys's heart fluttered hearing her mother speak, that soft caring voice was a bit hoarse due to no water but it was there, kneeling down, Oizys offered a soft smile. "It's okay mama... you're safe now, you are in good hands." She said softly then swallowed hard, "Do you... do you remember who I am...?" Her fear. Being forgotten. Her fear. Being alone forever with just Shadow as a family, that was her fear.
