Star Trek Gold Key #28: The Mimicking Menace

Our story begins with shooting, although, apparently, not enough shooting for Spock.

In an infinite universe, it can take infinite forms! Now, as the crew of the Enterprise seeks to learn about a wandering asteroid, it is confronted with an unsuspected life form that turns Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Calder against the others!”]

Things are a bit more low-key this time—no planets exploding or outbreaks of war, at least—but you can tell we’re in for a trip just by that dialogue. I mean, can you imagine McCoy saying that? I can’t. About the only time McCoy recognizes that Kirk is his captain is for the purpose of being passive-aggressive about it, never mind him reacting to Spock saying this with just sort of open befuddlement instead of yelling “ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR VULCAN MIND??” Meanwhile, Spock could easily have shot both people himself in the time it’s taking him to try to convince McCoy to do it, while the narration box is dramatically telling us about how Lieutenant Calder will turn against the others, as if we have any idea who Lieutenant Calder is or why we should care that much about them.

Ah well, I suppose we’re supposed to be interested in why Spock is advocating for Kirk’s death, so we might as well see what’s up with that.

We begin with a captain’s log: “The wandering asteroid Tactis II is now below the Enterprise! Question—does this asteroid pose a threat to the Federation?” We get absolutely no explanation as to why they’re interested in this asteroid specifically. Checking out every single asteroid to see if it’s a threat to the Federation does not, how should I put this, seem like a terribly efficient use of time. Then again, considering the results of their last two missions, I wouldn’t be surprised if Starfleet sent them out here to categorize all the space rocks just out of a desperate attempt to keep them out of trouble.

Anyway, as Kirk says to OC of the Week Lt. Calder, this might be an easy mission (you’d think he’d know better than to say that by now) because there’s no sign of life on the asteroid. Even the volcano is inactive! Asked to confirm, Spock says, “Temperature readings all negative!” I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he means they’re only reading temperatures below zero, because if you’re getting temperature readings of “no” I’d say you need to do some maintenance on those sensors.

They’re also getting some minor movement readings on the ground, but as Lt. Calder points out, that doesn’t on its own suggest life. Spock then says this is not a logical deduction because “Does movement itself signify life? Philosophers have not resolved that yet--” Uh...no? I’m pretty sure movement itself doesn’t signify life? Example: my ceiling fan’s moving right now and as far as I know, it’s not alive.

But never mind what the philosophers say, Kirk wants to know if there’s life on that there asteroid. “Prepare a landing party,” he says, “and hope that that volcano is inactive!” Kirk, you...you literally just said that volcano was inactive three panels ago.

Since they’re not picking up any life signs with the ship, Lt. Calder wants to take a shuttlecraft (or ‘shuttleship’ as she puts it) down so they can take “a larger bio-detection unit.” Kirk agrees, so off the landing party goes in the Galileo—Lt. Calder, Kirk, Spock, and two security guys. At least, Kirk says he’s taking two hands from security, but the two people we see in the Galileo are wearing yellow/green. Then again, the Galileo itself is also half-green, so I don’t know what’s going on.

They land on the asteroid, and Spock reports that the scanners show a life-supporting atmosphere. That seems like something you guys should have checked before you went down, but whatever. Of rather more immediate interest is that when Kirk looks out the door he sees an identical copy of the Galileo sitting nearby. (Which he refers to as a shuttlecraft. Three panels ago it was a shuttleship. Consistency!)

Naturally, it’s the two redshirts goldshirts uh, greenshirts, who get sent out to investigate the other Galileo. But they’re interrupted by the volcano going off. An eruption interruption, you might say. So much for it being inactive! Great job on the sensors there guys.

Kirk tells the security duo to make for the duplicate Galileo, since they’re closer to it than the real one. So they hastily climb in, declaring that they’ll be safe inside. Yes, you’ll be safe from the lava, in the...metal shuttlecraft...that’s sitting on the ground...but hey, as long as you don’t directly touch the lava yourself, you’ll be fine, right? That’s how it works in video games, and video games have never led me wrong before!

The two ‘shirts do make it into the duplicate Galileo alright, but are immediately confronted with another problem:

Wow, feeling dizzy while sitting on top of a fresh lava flow from a nearby volcano? What could possibly cause that? Could it be from inhaling the ash and toxic gasses released by volcanic eruptions? Or maybe from the intense heat of being stuck in a small enclosed metal box sitting directly on top of that nice toasty lava, which could easily be upwards of 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit? Nah. Nah, it couldn’t be. Must be something else.

Whatever’s stricken the security duo, they quickly pass out...but when Kirk calls a moment later to ask if they can get the duplicate Galileo moving (not even so much as a “hey are you guys alright” either—geez, Kirk), there’s now a duplicate security duo there as well to answer him. One of them tells him the ship is abandoned but all systems are go and they’re preparing to lift off.

The original Galileo, on the other hand, isn’t currently going anywhere, because “we have no ion power! Zero!” No, I don’t know what ion power is. But I hear shooting phasers at the engine works wonders. Anyway, that’s a pretty big problem because it means they can’t get away from the lava bearing down on them. I thought being in a shuttlecraft made you safe from the lava? Man, I’m confused.

“Stand by for the lava!” Kirk declares, a pretty difficult command to obey at the best of times.

The lava hits the craft. “Our internal temperature is rising sharply!” Spock tells everyone helpfully. “But it is possible that instead of being covered by the lava, we will be pushed by it! The surface below is glassy slick!” Sure, okay.

Luckily for them, the volcano soon stops pouring out lava, and the Galileo coasts off to clear ground. “Safe, Spock! Except for scorched paint!” Kirk declares. Wow. I guess those things have to be built to withstand planetary entry but still, that’s impressive. I wouldn’t advise touching the sides for a while, though.

But where’s the other Galileo gone? As everyone wisely sticks their heads out the door to check out all that awesome lava, Lt. Calder spots the duplicate—it’s flying into the cone of the volcano. Hm. That doesn’t seem like a great idea.

Kirk calls the security duo to say hey, what the fuck, why are you flying into a volcano, did you lose control of that thing? “No, captain!” one of the doppelgangers assures him. “Our scanners show entry into the cone is safe! We are sure reconnaissance there may help explain events here! Out!” Right, the cone of the volcano that erupted like ten minutes ago is...safe. Sure. That checks out.

The duplicate Galileo lands in the cone of the volcano which does, somehow, appear to be free of lava, but there are a bunch of weird lights hanging around up there. The doppelgangers carry the original security crew out of the craft, and then, um...this happens.

So the duplicate Galileo turns into lights, and then those lights get absorbed by the bigger group of lights that was already there. Okay. Gotta be honest here, I had to re-read this page way too many times to figure out what was going on there. Inasmuch as that qualifies as figuring out what was going on, anyway. Meanwhile, Spock’s over there misusing the word ‘illogical’ again.

Kirk and Calder go to talk to those two figures, while meanwhile, up on the Enterprise, Scotty’s wondering what’s going on. They saw two shuttlecrafts down there, and now there’s no communications. Also, y’know, a volcano went off, but he doesn’t seem bothered by that. It all seems pretty dodgy, so he has Sulu take the conn while he and McCoy beam down to go see what’s up. Why take McCoy? I dunno. Why not take McCoy, I guess?

The doppelgangers tell Kirk they didn’t see anything unusual up in the volcano, just “a lava pit which caused the eruption, but it was cool enough inside!” A lava pit that’s cool seems rather unusual to me (temperature-wise; figuratively speaking, all lava is cool) but Kirk and Calder don’t get the chance to ask any follow-up questions anyway because this happens:

I’m not sure which reaction seems more unrealistic here: Calder immediately identifying a bunch of weird lights as a protein molecule chain, or Kirk just going “Say!”

Kirk and Calder feel weak and pass out, and then...

So I guess the lights formed into doppelgangers of Kirk and Calder after they passed out, but...man, that sure could have been drawn a little clearer, huh. Also, apparently fainting made Kirk’s shirt change color.

Inside the Galileo, Spock’s check of the circuits has told him that the power drain afflicting the shuttle is being caused by some external force—something on the asteroid. Duhn duhn duhn! Before he can pursue this, Kirk and the rest come back, but either they’ve all suddenly transported into a green void (it’d make about as much sense as anything in this story, really) or someone forgot to draw the background.

Spock asks what’s been causing all these shenanigans and doppel!Kirk tells him, “It’s rather difficult to explain...an unusual concept!”

Then Spock feels dizzy too.

Has anyone ever reacted to being dizzy by going “Funny...feel dizzy!” I mean, I feel dizzy all the dang time, and so far it has never once caused me to temporarily lose my grasp of personal pronouns and sentence construction. Being on tumblr too long sometimes does that, but never feeling dizzy.

Anyway, after passing through the green void, then a purple void, and then a pink void, evidently Spock somehow wound up outside, because he promptly runs back to the Galileo.

QUICK DEPLOY EMERGENCY JAZZ HANDS

While he’s doing that, Scotty and McCoy beam down nearby. Scotty’s glad to see the rest of the landing party apparently alive and well, but McCoy wants to know where Spock is. Yes, you read that right: McCoy wants to know where Spock is. I dunno, maybe he thought of a really good zinger on the way down and wants to use it as soon as possible.

Scotty wonders if Spock is in the Galileo, but as the two of them turn towards it, the doppelgangers draw their phasers and yell at them not to go in the shuttlecraft. Scotty draws his phaser in response, telling McCoy to draw his as well. The phasers are still pink, in case you were wondering. Well, pink-ish. Magenta?

So, turns out the cover was a bit misleading; it’s actually Scotty there telling McCoy to shoot, not Spock. But if you looked at that cover and thought, “Oh man, what I really want to see in a Star Trek comic is some really awkward dialogue for McCoy,” don’t worry! That part wasn’t misleading. This comic has you covered.

Part One ends on that dreadfully gripping cliffhanger. I won’t keep you in suspense. Let’s get to part two.

I have no idea who’s giving that captain’s log, since Kirk is currently laying unconscious in the dirt somewhere around here. I also don’t know if either Scotty or McCoy actually fire their phasers, because the art cuts straight to doppel!Kirk and Calder dissolving back into light, followed by the fake security duo. Scotty helpfully lays it out for us.

Baffled by all this (understandably, so am I) McCoy and Scotty head for the Galileo to see if Spock has any answers. Said Spock is currently kneeling on the floor but says he’ll be restored to his full strength in a moment. When Scotty asks what’s going on, Spock says, “An energy drain, but I was less vulnerable than the others because--”

We never find out why Spock was less vulnerable than the others (how convenient) because suddenly the volcano starts throwing up rocks. That’s bad news for Kirk and Calder, who are still laying out there in the open somewhere, so McCoy runs out to get them. Or possibly he just teleports over there, I’m not sure, all I know is one panel they’re all in the Galileo and the next panel he’s over there with Kirk and Calder, who are slowly starting to come around.

They make it back to the protection of the Galileo just in time for the last of the rocks to fall on it instead of them. Then the rockfall stops, leaving the Galileo a bit dented but otherwise fine. Well, that page’s worth of action definitely contributed some valuable to the story.

Of course, while the Galileo might be intact, it’s still inoperable due to that whole power-drain thing. Spock reckons the key to all this lies up in that volcano crater, so he gets Scotty—whose communicator still works, presumably either because he’s not been down there long enough for it to be drained or because Scotty himself is an ambient power source—to call up the Enterprise with a request.

[ID: Uhura listening to a speaker saying, “Scotty to Enterprise! If you read me, beam down a fully-equipped video-camera-robot!” to which Uhura says, “They must want to inspect something they’re afraid to face themselves!”]

Dang, Uhura, okay. Just...lay that right out there.

Meanwhile, Calder is speculating that they’re dealing with “some parasitic life-form that drains life powers from humans!” Kirk asks Spock if he agrees and Spock says they need more concrete evidence before theorizing. Right, it’s too early to theorize that the thing that’s been draining everyone’s energy might be a thing that drains energy. I’m starting to suspect that Spock just reflexively disagrees with anything Calder says.

The robot and its accompanying TV monitor then show up and man, you’d think that the freedom of a comic book format would allow them to depict some Star Trek tech that looked less incredibly and intrinsically 60s but, uh...nope, just doubled down on that, I guess.

So the robot that has no reason at all to be shaped like a human but is for some reason goes up to investigate the crater, relaying video to the TV, while Kirk and Spock helpfully tell each other what they’re looking at. As the robot enters the crater they see a ruined spacecraft of some sort, and then a couple of skeletons with the ragged remains of clothing still clinging to them. Cool! Then they see the lights again, and then the screen goes blank. Spock tries to recall the robot, but up in the crater we see this happening:

The robot comes back, and everyone helpfully gathers around outside to watch so they can all faint en masse when it turns out that, oh, what a surprise, the returning robot is actually another duplicate. Luckily Spock (who, remember, is less vulnerable than the others because--) hangs on long enough to call up to the Enterprise using...either his communicator that’s magically now working again, or Scotty’s communicator which he magically acquired at some point that we never saw, take your pick.

On the Enterprise some greenshirt tells Uhura they’re receiving a very feeble signal, and she tells him to turn on the sound-booster, because I guess Uhura’s delegating her job now. Spock tells them to fire a stream of negative ions into the volcano’s crater, so they circle back around over the crater and shoot it with the ion-beam dispenser that the Enterprise apparently has. This causes the lights to glow more brightly for a moment before fading until the weird thing is left looking like just a bunch of q-tips stuck together. But like, really big q-tips.

The real security team, still laying up there in the crater, finally get enough strength back to wake up and skedaddle out of there. Upon making it back down, though, they run into a spot of confusion, what with the four crewmembers laying unconscious on the ground and the four identical crewmembers standing over them.

Spock tells them to shoot the people standing up, which they do, presumably accepting his authority on the grounds of being the only one around who doesn’t have a double. The doppelgangers turn back into lights and disappear into the lava, where Spock says they should be temporarily immobilized. One of the security duo reminds him about that robot that’s hanging around here somewhere.

“there’s no need to swear, Mr. Spock” “I MEANT SHOOT IT”

Oh, how suspenseful, how will they handle this—I’m kidding, they just shoot it too. Everyone then heads back to the Galileo, where Kirk notes that “The ion power’s restored! Another mystery—like why you weren’t doubled, Spock!” Spock says he wasn’t doubled because he’s a Vulcan and his internal structures are different, so that slowed the process. Oh sure, that thing can duplicate a shuttlecraft and a robot just fine, but I mean, Vulcans, Vulcans are way different. As I’m sure you know, taxonomically speaking, humans are more closely related to shuttlecraft than they are to Vulcans. And no, Spock has nothing to say about the first mystery of why the shuttlecraft’s power is back on.

As they fly back to the Enterprise, Spock and Calder explain—and I use the term loosely—what that thing’s whole deal was. “This shape is very similar to our protein molecule chain!” Calder explains. “That is our basic life-building unit!”

Looks identical to me!

Spock explains that, as Calder speculated earlier, this particular protein molecule chain is a parasitic life-form that drains energy from everything. The central ‘life-core’ in the volcano sends out “smaller molecule chains—those duplicate any mechanical or human energy source, drain its energy, and return to feed the CENTRAL core!” Ah yes, the molecule chains. The chains that were easily big enough to be seen by the naked eye. Those molecule chains. Sent out by the protein molecule chain that’s...the size of a volcano crater...look, I’m a humanities major and even I know this is nonsense.

Calder reckons the thing goes into hibernation to save energy since it’s the only life form on the asteroid, but that the signs of movement the Enterprise detected could be its way of luring in passing energy sources. Because it’s a protein molecule chain that’s smart enough to understand that passing starships might be scanning for life, I guess…? Alright, never mind that, how did Spock defeat it? Simple, he says: the thing had absorbed the shuttlecraft’s power source, which was positive ions, so he had it hit with negative ions.

...you know, fine. Fine. Whatever. Let’s just go.

Kirk closes out with a captain’s log: “In accordance with Federation by-laws, we did not destroy the life-form on Tactis II...but even now, the life-form is probably active again! It will be seeking other energy sources! Be warned!”

Oh, sure, Federation by-laws. Now you care about Federation by-laws. You weren’t real fussed about Federation by-laws when it came to starting a civil war, or disrupting a clone society so badly the whole planet blew up, but this, this is serious. A bunch of weird lights on an asteroid that eat everyone who comes close? That’s something worth preserving!

So they fly off, having determined that against all odds, Tactis II is a threat to the Federation. Great. Now we’ve got to check all these other asteroids too.

#6 Pt 1: Bernalillo County Helicopter Rescue Operations – Lt. David Lujan

Welcome to Episode 6 of FireFighter Kingdom. This episode is Part 1 of our interview with Lt. David Lujan of the Bernalillo County Helicopter Rescue. David Lujan has server for almost 14 years in the fire service and is also as the Public Information Officer (PIO) for Bernalillo County Fire Department.

David discusses many topics in his roles as PIO, and how his unit and department operates as an asset across multiple agencies and collaborations in the state and beyond. Including some great stories on rescues, training, 22 push up challenge and more! This is a great episode with a great guest that you don’t want to miss.

Robert Sanchez: Hey, we’re back at Firefighter Kingdom. How are you doing, Dave Lujan? I have Dave Lujan as a guest. He’s on the MASU team for Bernalillo County Fire. We also have Vince Trujillo here, our cohost, and always can’t thank Vince enough for setting up everything for us, and he’s the man behind the scenes. How you doing Vince?

Vince Trujillo: Hey everybody, thanks for having me on. So happy to be here with Firefighter Kingdom. We have David Lujan, great guest today, he’s going to be talking a little bit about paramedic, some rescue and helicopter stuff. Robert Sanchez: Thanks Vince, we’ll be talking to Vince a little later, and it’s the man with the plan right there that makes everything happen behind the scenes. Dave, man, it’s been a long time. Tell me a little about yourself, how long you’ve been in Bernalillo County Fire Department.

David Lujan: Yeah. Hey, first off, I just want to say Robert, Vince, thank you guys so much for having us out or having me out to talk about our program here. Again, it’s truly an honor. Obviously, you and I have had a long ongoing, really long friendship. I consider you a friend, a professional colleague, so it’s been really great, and Vince it’s very nice to get to meet you. So, super excited to be here and to talk about our program. So, yeah, your initial question how long have I been with Bernalillo County? So, I’m just completed 13 years, coming up on to my 14th years. So, yeah, it’s really flown by. I started in 2008, and here we are. I can’t believe how quick it’s gone; it feels like I just got out of the academy.

Robert Sanchez: Nice man, it’s nice to see you and talk to you. You are a true friend and a colleague, and I look up to you in respect just all the things you accomplished in the department in your career. It kind of seems like whatever assignment is thrown at you, you give it 100%, you make sure it’s done, and that’s what I respect about you. That’s why you’re on the show, I just think that you’re a good asset to the firefighting community, good asset to the public, and thank you for being on the show. It’s an honor to have you.

Robert Sanchez: We were just talking and you and I just got off shift last night, and you were telling me about… I know there was a wild land fire there in Valencia County, and you were working as a PIO there on that fire. I know they also utilize the helicopter, the MASU helicopter, and what did they do? I know they were working, I just was curious to see what their tasks were. What were they assigned to do on their fire?

David Lujan: Yeah, just your initial statement there, Robert, thank you for the kind words brother. Just been truly blessed to be part of a great organization and blessed with favor and opportunity within the department. So, I definitely just want to give credit where credit is due, and being a man of faith as well, I feel that God has a hand in everything.

Robert Sanchez: Absolutely.

David Lujan: He’s definitely been able to influence everything that I do. So, I’m very grateful for that, but back to your question there about the fire we had yesterday in Valencia County. Yeah, approximately about 1700 hours, 5:00 PM, our fire control dispatch reached out us and asked if we could provide some resources out to a big Bosque fire in the Valencia County area. So, we ended up sending out five units to that area, and my job as the PIO is to go where incidents are occurring. And because we did have some resources out there, I just wanted to see what was going on, and to see if they needed any assistance from the public information side.

David Lujan: So, we got a great relationship with the media, the local media here, all the newscasts. When they call, we try to be able to answer and give them the information they need. So, upon arriving, made contact with our crews and spoke with the incident commander, saw what was going on, and multiple agencies were on that fire yesterday, not just including Bernalillo County Fire. Albuquerque Fire was on there, Valencia County, BLM, State Forestry, New Mexico State Forestry. And again, just a multitude of agencies, I’m not naming all of them.

David Lujan: But one of the big resources on there was the aviation component, and there was actually two helicopters on there, one of them being the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Metro One. And that’s the program that we’re part of, and essentially, when it comes to this program, the Metro Air Support Unit Program, it really has three missions. One of those missions being law enforcement, because again, it is a sheriff’s department entity. The second mission being available for fire bucket operations, and that’s exactly what it got requested for yesterday.

David Lujan: So, our pilot who’s also an undersheriff. We have two pilots that are attached to that unit out there, and one of them being the undersheriff of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, and one of our sergeants, Sergeant Fred Beers was on that aircraft yesterday, and they conducted a multitude of fire bucket drops on there. So, definitely we’re a great resource for the resources on the ground, and again, it’s just one of our mission platforms, so we were glad that we were able to be able to assist at moment’s notice.

Robert Sanchez: That’s great, and I think it’s working with the other agencies, I think we’re blessed here in New Mexico especially in the metro area, it seems like we work great with the other agencies. And just to complement the agencies, we have the sheriff’s department and the MASU team, which you’re a part of on the aviation side, doing bucket drops. And I’ve had, actually, the opportunity to actually do training with you guys and actually see them do bucket drops and the aircraft in action during wildland fire. So, they do a great job man, they’re well trained and they do a great job for the community, and that’s a great asset that, that has.

Robert Sanchez: So, I keep mentioning MASU. What’s the acronym for MASU? What is it?

David Lujan: Yeah, so the term MASU, again, it’s something that we utilize. It’s an acronym that we throw around a lot, and what it stands for is the Metro Air Support Unit. And just to get a little bit of backstory on that, just to be 100% clear that the air assets, there’s a total of three air assets that are associated with the Metro Air Support Unit. We have an AStar, which is a B350 platform. We also have a 1970s, Vietnam era UH-1 Huey, and we have a fixed wing Cessna.

David Lujan: I feel kind of bad right now, I can’t remember the other specific call numbers on them, but again, three air assets, and those resources 100% belong to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s office. So, when you hear the term MASU, that’s exactly what we’re referring to. It’s a sheriff’s department resource, and back in 2014, the Bernalillo County Fire Department was approached by the sheriff’s department and said that they wanted to put together a search and rescue team with hoist capabilities. And we can go into that later, but whenever we reference the fire department as far as being associated with the MASU team, we have another name and it’s the Air Rescue Taskforce.

David Lujan: But whenever you hear the term MASU, it is very specific to the sheriff’s department, but it’s kind of an umbrella. We all fall underneath that. So, whenever we reference to say, “Hey, I’m part of the MASU program,” there’s some subcategories underneath that.

Robert Sanchez: Sure. Yeah, like I said, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see you guys in action, and the great job you guys do. We’ve all done rappelling and stuff like that in the fire department, but I just don’t know if I’m going to be hanging out of a helicopter rappelling or getting hoisted.

David Lujan: Neither did I.

Robert Sanchez: I was just thinking last night, I was thinking about coming to this podcast. I was thinking what training do you guys have to even go through? Is there certifications or a certain amount of hours that you have to get trained to actually get hoisted off the aircraft or rappel or doing rescues?

David Lujan: Yeah. No, Robert, that’s a great question, and there’s no easy answer to it. It’s basically continued to grow and more requirements and things have definitely been added as we’ve continued in this program. But just like I stated earlier, we were approached back in 2014 to essentially provide five paramedics available that were already certified ALS capabilities, were medics that were running out on the streets, and we had a large group of qualified personnel that were in our fire department that were very interested in getting into this program.

David Lujan: So, they ended up selecting five, and I was one of the fortunate ones to be selected in that initial group of paramedics that got selected. At that time the only requirement was that you had a minimum of at least three years as a working paramedic out in the field, and we were going to go through a training with a third-party agency called Priority 1. They specialized in training people how to do hoist rescues and patient packaging out in the austere environment, and it was about a seven-day course that we took every day for eight hours, just learning the basics of it.

David Lujan: But with a program like this and having the techniques associated with it. It’s not something that’s just learned over a seven-day period of time. It’s something that’s trained for many years, so that’s how the initial training started. But with these types of skills they’re perishable skills, so you��ve got to keep them up, you’ve got to continue to keep working on them. What’s required of our paramedics and what we call our tactical flight officers and our sheriff’s deputies and our pilots is we have a minimum of two training days a month that are consisted anywhere between four and eight hours.

David Lujan: And then every month we also have a safety meeting that’s associated with some kind of break out session to just go over different types of techniques that we may be utilizing on the aircraft or on the ground, or techniques that we’re seeing at other ground agencies that we’re working with. Just to truly talk about safety and things that we could get better at. And then at least once a year we do what we call an annual refresher, and we go out for another seven days. We’re hitting this stuff hard, we’re practicing all of our hoist training, our short haul capabilities, rappel out of the helicopter. Again, this is all new techniques that we’ve added over the years of the program, and we’re coming into our seventh year. So, March of 2021 will be seven years of the establishment of this collaboration with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department and the Bernalillo County Fire Department and the search and rescue aspect of it.

Robert Sanchez: Nice. I might be biased, I work for Bernalillo County, but I can see the complement that the fire department and the sheriff’s department working together offer to Bernalillo County. I think it’s a great asset.

David Lujan: Yeah, it’s actually one of the few organizations throughout the United States that operates that way. There’s a couple other agencies that, to be honest with you, they actually modeled after what we did, and it just makes sense. You have two great public safety resources under one umbrella, which is Bernalillo County. Why not collaborate them? So, again, the sheriff’s department provides the helicopters to include the pilots, tactical flight officers, hoist operators, and the fire department provides the paramedics that have the medical skills and the hoisting and the ground support and things of that sort.

David Lujan: We’ve worked with multiple agencies just outside of Bernalillo County, volunteer agencies, and we just recently over the last three years have been working with the UNM School of Medicine Reach and Treat Team, which has now been actually brought onto our team as part of the air support unit.

Robert Sanchez: Nice, so they’re physicians?

David Lujan: Yeah. No, they’re a phenomenal organization, and here in our backyard at the University of New Mexico, they offer a program through the School of Medicine, and it’s International Diploma in Mountain Medicine. There’s very few education agencies or organizations that offer a program like that, and it’s actually accredited through ICAR, and ICAR stands for International Commission of Alpine Rescue.

David Lujan: Just in the past we were doing these hoist rescues, and we were actually finding ourselves working with these individuals on the ground. They bring such a high level of technical type rescue and their capabilities, and they’re out there actually teaching people all over the world about the importance of mountain rescue and search and rescue and how to be prepared. We said, “Why are we not working with them on a regular basis?” So, a relationship was fostered, Jason Williams who’s the director of that program, phenomenal individual. His dad actually has a lot of very strong ties with Bernalillo County Fire Department in the volunteer days.

David Lujan: So, it was just a great working relationship right off the bat. I really want to give credit to him to help foster that relationship, and essentially it started off as doing some training and stuff together to the point where now try actually part of the air crew, and any time we get a mission we’re reaching out to them so that they can either come fly with us on the mission or we actually have ground support teams going in. But one of your questions was asking are they physicians? Yes, there is physicians on the team. So, at a minimum everybody’s at the paramedic license, and then we do have physicians that are actually on team that fly with us.

Robert Sanchez: Nice, very good. So, as far as EMS goes, we have paramedics, we have physicians. So, the capabilities is basically the same thing that would be in the back of a rescue or an ambulance. It’s basically an ambulance or a rescue in the air. Is that correct?

David Lujan: Yeah. No, definitely, that’s definitely a correct statement. One thing that we do try to identify is we do have these capabilities of providing ALS interventions and care whether it’s in the aircraft or whether it’s on the ground. But what our goal is, is that this resource especially from the search and rescue aspect of it is designed to try to get people out of the austere environment, and what does that mean? That means that either ground crews are going to have a delayed time trying to get these individuals because of where they’re located, or they’re just out in an area where nobody can find them.

David Lujan: We utilize this resource to potentially find them in the air, and if we have the ability to get in and get them out quickly, that’s our primary objective. Now, can we provide the medical services that are needed? Absolutely, but we try not to do that if we don’t have to. If it’s a critical situation, and we need to provide those interventions, we absolutely do it. But we like to say that our bread and butter is extracting individuals out of the austere environment, and then getting them to definitive care quickly. We can go through that whole… If you’ve had any training in EMS or medical field, they talk about that golden hour, and our job is to try to get these individuals, especially if they’re critical or hurt, back to some definitive care within that golden hour. Having this air resource definitely gives us the ability to do that.

Robert Sanchez: Sure. That’s great for the public in Bernalillo County for sure.

David Lujan: Oh, absolutely.

Robert Sanchez: It’s not only Bernalillo County, it’s the surrounding area. Do you guys even go out of state at all?

David Lujan: Yeah. No, Robert that’s a great question. So, when we started this program, yes, the resource was through Bernalillo County, but again, the sheriff’s department have had these air assets for quite some time. And even from a law enforcement side of things and even from a fire bucket operations things, they were going outside Bernalillo County to surrounding agencies or surrounding counties, and doing this stuff for the State of New Mexico. And then when we brought and the search and rescue aspect of it, yes, we are absolutely a resource for the State of New Mexico.

We haven’t gone out of state yet, but we have done a multitude of rescues outside of Bernalillo County. Stuff in Taos, out in Silver City area, Socorro County, again, Valencia County, Santa Fe County. So, we’ve been utilized by a multitude of agencies throughout the State of New Mexico. And the closest that we came to going outside of the state was actually on the Texas-New Mexico state borderline that was out in southern New Mexico and Colorado. We ended up not flying that mission, but just goes to show that the word is out that we’re a resource, and we want to continue to promote that. And I hope even through this podcast people who are listening just know that this resource is a resource for the State of New Mexico.

So, we encourage anybody if they need to utilize us, go through their dispatch center. Have them notify Bernalillo County dispatch center and make a request for air support. Again, with three aircraft, we can do a multitude of different things. So, it just really depends on which aircraft we have up at that time, or if there are any down for maintenance. And how we’re going to decide which aircraft to use, and which technique we’re going to use for whatever the situation may be.

Robert Sanchez: All right, so I wasn’t even aware you guys did that many counties outside of Bernalillo County. It’s really the whole State of New Mexico. Say last year, what was the number of rescues you guys did in just the State of New Mexico?

David Lujan: That’s a great question Robert. I brought these… Sometimes I forget to just… I don’t have them ingrained in my head, and the reason for it is because we are being utilized so much. So, last year in 2019, we had a total of 48 requests for service, and that’s not just within Bernalillo County. That’s throughout State of New Mexico, neighboring counties.

Part of what these numbers are is we had what we call confirmed coordinates from the air. What that means is that whatever agency it may be, whether it’s ground support crews or a different county calls us and they say, “Hey, we have an individual that we think they’re here.” They give us some coordinates, we go fly over those coordinates, and we’re able to confirm those coordinates and say, “Hey, yes, we’ve spotted this subject. This is where they’re at. The coordinates that you gave us are correct.” Or, “Hey, the coordinates you gave us were not correct, but we did find them. Here’s the updated coordinates.”

Essentially, we’re an eye in the sky for them just to confirm that, “Hey, when you’re sending your ground crews in there, you’re going in the right direction.” Because there’s nothing worse than sending a group of individuals to go try to rescue somebody, and they’re going in the wrong direction-

Robert Sanchez: They can’t find them.

David Lujan: Right, or they can’t find them. And the problem with that is… I don’t want to be specific to anybody, but when why put more people out in a mountain in the austere environment, I don’t care even if they’re a rescuer, they become more at risk from potential injury. And now we just don’t have one person we’re looking for, we’re potentially going to be assisting with more people that are out in the field that could potentially get injured.

So, finding those coordinates and making sure that we can verify those coordinates is really, really a strong resource. Last year we did that 11 times, and that means we didn’t land, we just confirmed where they were at, and then we guided ground crews into them. And then we had a total of seven hoist rescues, and then we landed four times and rescued people. So, any time that we go into any type of mission, and they’re out in the austere environment, and we’re thinking that we may try to hoist these individuals out or short haul them out, our first contingency is we try to find a place to land because there’s inherent risks that are associated with any of those. And if we can mitigate those risks by just landing and potentially walking to where the patient is, and maybe that’s a half mile, a mile away, and we can do that safely, we’re going to do that.

We ended up doing that four times last year, and then we had three fire bucket operations. So, these were big fires that our resources were called to that we conducted bucket drops. And then one of the other things that we do, it kind of goes in line with confirming coordinates is depending on the time of day and how long the resources are going to take to get there on the ground, we fly over and we actually drop care packages down to them. First thing is it just lets those individuals know that, “Hey, I may be out there, and I’m confirmed that I’m lost, but somebody has eyes on me.” We know that we’re sending resources to you.

Robert Sanchez: It gives them that comfort.

David Lujan: Exactly, it gives them that comfort like, “Somebody’s coming for me.” And then when you can throw down a care package that has some water, some food, a little bit of shelter, something to keep them warm, a signaling mirror, it gives them a little bit more peace of mind that, “I’m going to be okay. They’re sending people in here to get us.”

Robert Sanchez: I’ve heard of the care package, I wasn’t aware of what’s in them, so that’s good to know. One thing I was talking to another firefighter a couple of weeks ago and just talking about being on the mountains, especially the Sandia Mountains, how big it is, and just the weather change from the bottom to the top. You don’t realize, even in the summer months, you could actually get hypothermia, right?

David Lujan: Absolutely, people could suffer hypothermia in the mid of summer, absolutely. People have heard this term before, if you live in New Mexico, if you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes because it changes. And that’s in the normal environment, so when you start getting into the mountainous terrain, and again, the Mecca that we have here in Bernalillo County with Sandia Mountains with all these established trails, these beautiful sites, our beautiful city that sits in the valley. People are utilizing these trails all the time.

But what we find a lot is that these people go up into these areas and they don’t have the proper footing, they don’t have the proper clothing, and really, they don’t go prepared. They don’t take enough water, some people don’t even take water at all, which it’s a little bit baffling that people would even do that, but they do. But we’ve seen people just go in, in a T-shirt and shorts because when they started down on the ground it was nice and warm, and as they’re moving up those mountains they’re sweating, they’re getting hot. And then maybe an hour into their hike, the clouds start rolling or weather just changes. The next thing you know, we see a temperature drop of 20 degrees in some of those areas. So, yeah.

Robert Sanchez: So, it is possible to get hypothermia.

David Lujan: Absolutely.

Robert Sanchez: It’s hard to believe, you start climbing a mountain at 90 degrees whatever, especially if you’re not prepared, you’re in flip-flops, you’re in shorts, you have your dog with you, you don’t have no snacks. And then you get up there and it starts getting cold, it starts getting dark. I think that’s one thing, if the public listens to this podcast, they understand that you should go enjoy the outdoors. It’s peaceful, it’s good to clear your mind, but also remember it could be dangerous.

David Lujan: Yeah, you’re absolutely right. We encourage people, please go out. Use these amenities that, in my opinion these are God gifts. You go out, like you said, to just… There’s a term that’s called like nature therapy, and sometimes it’s just going out, walking, even if you’re having a conversation with somebody or nobody at all, it’s a form of therapy just being out in those environments. So, we 100% encourage people to do that. We also do encourage them to be prepared and understand where they’re going and the necessary items that they would need to hit some of these trails. And again, we can talk more specifics about that later, but yeah, we want people to go out there and do those things.

Robert Sanchez: Good. Well, that’s very good. That’s what I want about this podcast, it’s firefighters, it’s for the community, just to get the word out. But I know I was talking to you the other day, like I said, it’s always a pleasure talking to you. Tell me, do you all assist law enforcement also? You guys are on the aircraft for law enforcement also, and you were telling me about a situation where you were on the chase where there was actually a shooting, and you saw, actually, an individual get shot, is that correct? By law enforcement. So, that was crazy, I didn’t realize you guys were actually on the aircraft during law enforcement operations.

David Lujan: Yeah, that is true. So, last year we worked with our management to get them to understand the importance. The way we’re currently operating, let me back up a little bit. We had a paramedic or an officer staged at a station, and any time that a mission came in, we would essentially divert those individuals from their station to go out to the hangar where we have the aircraft set up, and they would go out on the mission from there. The problem we were finding with that is just our skids off the ground time, our time to get on station was averaging between 45 minutes to an hour. And again, one of our goals was to try to assist in that golden hour period, especially if somebody’s critical.

So, what was decided by the air support unit and management was we need to have somebody up there full-time. So, we actually have a full-time, what we call rescue specialist up there five days out of the week, and then also on call when necessary. But in doing that, we don’t get search and rescue calls every day, we don’t get fire bucket calls every day, but what we do get called every day is for law enforcement and patrols. And our deputies do a phenomenal job, our police officers in Albuquerque do a phenomenal job, and we’re another resource for them over the City of Albuquerque.

So, what we do is we’re up there in the air, we’re also another eye in the sky to assist the tactical flight officers and the pilot. And in the event that we need to divert to a mission right away, we don’t have to go back to the airport to pick one of us to go. We have all of our gear with us, and we immediately go on our mission. But sometimes we don’t get those missions, so in doing that, we’ve done pursuits with vehicles, and I said, yeah, we actually had one where our police officers were involved in a officer-involved shooting. We actually caught all that on film, and we were in the back and it was…

Talk about a new insight and appreciation for what our other side of public safety does, which is law enforcement, and the situations that they got put in, and we see that firsthand. Normally from the fire department stand we don’t go into the scene until it’s all been cleared by them, they truly protect us. But just seeing what they had to deal with and react so quickly, it was eye-opening. Even for somebody who’s in public safety and already has a good understanding of what they do, but to just see it like that, yeah, it was pretty crazy for us.

Robert Sanchez: Yeah, I could see. So, if there was ever a time where the unfortunate situation where an officer or a deputy, they’re injured or they got shot, you could actually land the helicopter and give them medical attention immediately because there’s probably a helicopter physician on the aircraft. Is that correct?

David Lujan: Yeah. That’s correct, yeah. Normally, on the law enforcement patrols it’s typically more of the paramedics from the fire department side. Our physicians and our reach and treat personnel typically go more on the search and rescue, a little bit more critical type missions. But yeah, you’re absolutely right. If we had the ability to land at that location and render medical aid, we could immediately do that. We carry our medical gear with us on the helicopter during these patrols, and we’ve actually done that before. There was an individual at the shooting range, and we were doing patrol over there. We were able to land, apply a tourniquet, and save this individual.

And I’m going to make sure I give credit where credit’s due. It actually wasn’t one of the medics that was on at that time. It was one of the tactical flight officer who was an EMT at the time, he’s an intermediate. So, we told him, “You kind of stole our thunder man.” But if he wouldn’t have done that, this individual could have easily bled out. So, it just, again, just shows the resource capability.

Robert Sanchez: That’s a good resource and a tool for even probably not just for law enforcement. It can be for civilians or nobody that needs immediate attention. You can actually land the helicopter, and so, that’s a great resource. I’m sure you remember utilizing the helicopter to remember veterans. We did that push-up challenge, the 22-push-up challenge, and that was pretty cool. We had the aircraft involved, in fact, when we put this podcast on our YouTube channel, we’ll play that video, we think they’d like to see that.

It was actually law enforcement and fire department from Bernalillo County doing push-ups, 22 push-ups because that’s what represents almost 22, unfortunately, veterans commit suicide a day. But it was cool to do that filming, have the helicopter come in, and with your leadership you actually took control of that doing the push-up challenge, and that was a great opportunity. So, I want to put that in our podcast just to show the community, and also throw some other videos up there, the good rescues you guys have, maybe some bucket drops and stuff like that.

David Lujan: Yeah. No, we definitely, we can make sure to get all that out and specific to us doing that commercial there, it was definitely more of a public relations type of event. I talked earlier about the three missions we have, the first one being law enforcement, second one being fire bucket operations, and the third one being search and rescue. Well, there’s technically a fourth one, and that’s the public relations. We want especially the citizens of Bernalillo County to understand that this is their resource, and if we can be at some of these events, we want to be at these events to just show the public what the resource is, what our capabilities are, and just to educate them as much as we can.

Yeah, that push-up challenge was a lot of fun man. It was really great to be able to just showcase. I think the big thing for me was obviously what the cause was for, right? We were there to really identify the serious issue when it comes to our veterans with PTSD. We know even on the law enforcement side and the fire department side, that’s stuff that we struggle with as well. So, it was a very good parallel as well for us to be able to identify with what our veterans are going through.

And then secondly it was great to see the two organizations that are providing this resource, which was the sheriff’s department and the fire department come together to put out this PSA. And then it’s just extremely fun when you guys look at the video there, us being able to just show what some of our rescue techniques are and capabilities. And actually, rappelling out of the helicopter, that’s what we did there on scene, we rappelled, took our equipment off, and went and started doing push-ups there. I’m not going to lie, it was fun. We got called out by our neighboring station with Albuquerque Fire, it’s an amazing department, a lot of great men and women that work for there. And they called us out to do that push-up challenge.

So, I think what was fun about us is we rose to the challenge. We said, “Those guys put out a great video, man. What can we do to try to supersede that?” So, just a little friendly competition there.

Robert Sanchez: And you know how we roll, man, we overdid it.

David Lujan: Oh, absolutely. Let’s bring the helicopter, let’s bring the sheriff’s department, let’s bring anybody we can. Special thanks to Laura Cunningham who definitely-

David Lujan: She was the mind craft behind that, and when we told her all the resources we can make available, she just said, “Oh, we have to do this.” So, I really want to give a lot of credit to her because she made that video great.

Robert Sanchez: Oh, absolutely. She’s a-

David Lujan: You and I worked on getting the resources together, but she was the brainchild behind that.

Robert Sanchez: She was, and she’s done a lot for fire in commercials and videos and stuff. There’s a commercial she did, a firefighter commercial, I think it was a PSA. She did a couple for us, did a great job, and you were actually on one of those PSAs.

David Lujan: Yeah, that’s how I met Laura. I was part of one of the very first ones we put out, and she was great to work with.

Robert Sanchez: Maybe we can actually throw that PSA on YouTube to show your pretty mug to everybody.

David Lujan: Yeah, yeah. Well, thanks bro. That’s a matter of opinion, but I’ll take it bro, I’ll take it.

Robert Sanchez: Yeah, we’ll put that PSA on there, but just going back to the International Association of Firefighters, she won an award for one of the best PSAs that year. I think it was, I want to say 2017 if I’m not mistaken.

David Lujan: Yeah, that sounds about right.

Robert Sanchez: She won an award, so it was great.

David Lujan: Yeah, she was awesome. She was great to work with. I hope we get an opportunity to work with her again. She’s a lot of fun, and she’s a master of her craft. She’s in the right place, she’s doing the right thing, so it’s a blessing to work with her man.

acceptable ways to address Scotty

Mister Scott/Miss Scott

‘Mister’ is, in fact, acceptable for female officers both in canon and in the navy in real life, however ‘Miss’ can be used based on preference. presumably if you don’t know the gender of the person you’re speaking to, use mister over any alternative. Scotty isn’t especially fond of miss as it comes off almost diminutive, but may or may not correct it.

Sir/Ma’am

again, pretty straightforward. ‘Sir’ is acceptable for women, both in ST canon and the real life navy. ma’am is more specific. again, presumably ‘sir’ is the one that should be defaulted to if gender is unknown or has no term. Scotty has a very strong preference for ‘sir’ in this regard and generally corrects it.

Lieutenant Commander/Lieutenant Commander Scott

this is pretty obviously okay. I should note, though, that insisting on calling someone by the full Lieutenant Commander can be offensive, though it is not automatically so, by way of emphasizing that they aren’t a ‘real’ Commander. It can be used derogatorily especially if the Ltcdr in question is in a position (the XO or similar) usually held by someone of Commander or higher, and someone is trying to say that the Ltcdr is not qualified without outright saying so or being overtly disrespectful. it’s like refering to an lt jg as lt jg instead of just lt. you’re deliberately drawing attention to the fact that they aren’t a ‘full’ lt. in casual conversations that do not require full rank you can also use--

Commander/Commander Scott

this is the acceptable way to shorten the rank ‘Lieutenant Commander’ in an on-duty situation/while speaking about them, etc. the line between ltcdr and cdr is not so wide that the difference is important. lieutenant commander is a bit of a mouthful when just trying to talk and is can be very unwieldy if you’re trying to quickly relay info, hence, commander is an easy stand-in. one cannot use ‘lieutenant’ as referring to someone by a lesser rank is incredibly offensive. don’t do it.

Engineer/Engineer Scott

this is typically for superior officers only, if at all. kirk has canonically done so but I haven’t been able to figure out if it’s the same thing as calling bones ‘Dr. Mccoy’ instead of his rank or if it could be dismissive when used. Certainly for lt and ensign ranks ‘engineer lastname’ is acceptable, so, presumably it works for her as well. Scotty doesn’t really mind this, as being an engineer is, truthfully, all she wants.

other notes:

don’t use her first name at all ever while on duty. or any officer’s. the moments where crew use jim’s name are meant to be surprising and are also almost never in front of other crew members.

even if you have a personal relationship with scotty, platonic or otherwise, you don’t get to start refusing orders or addressing her in a personal manner while on duty. don’t fucking do it.

I’ll admit that gets fuzzy with characters such as bones who really doesn’t give a shit when it comes to formality versus letting you know you need to get your life together, but remember that mccoy gets a lot of leeway for being CMO and on top of that he can literally overrule the captain if it comes to it. he’s earned his leeway. a random ensign has not. that’s the distinction i’m going for, here.

remember that ‘Scotty’ is actually a nickname and is, thus, informal and lower ranking officers generally SHOULD NOT use informalities on duty, though Scotty’s liberal with her tolerance of it (eg. have half an ounce of respect in your tone and she doesn’t care if you call her scotty instead of sir/her rank.)

using ‘Scotty’ is perfectly acceptable off duty for pretty much everyone

‘boss’ is considered an acceptable and respectful way to address a superior, especially when revealing chain of command isn’t a good idea.

‘Captain’ is a position as well as a rank so anyone in that position is due that title, regardless of rank. If Spock, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, or Ensign Joe Blow have the conn and are in charge, they can be addressed as ‘Acting Captain’ or just ‘Captain’, regardless. The exception to this might be admirals/commodores/etc. When in doubt, use the higher rank of address.

other positions/billets factor into who is in charge of who on board. scotty automatically outranks anyone else on board the enterprise short of kirk and spock because of her position as second officer! period! the duties of a second officer are separate from the other duties she performs! the only exception to the rank rule would be the chief medical officer acting in a medical capacity, as usual.

department heads also outrank those in their department; even if scotty were an ensign and not lt cmdr or second officer, she would outrank everyone in the engineering department by her status as chief engineering officer; this is why someone with a department head status is typically lt cdr or above, to avoid rank/rate/billet/position issues.

senior staff, at least on star trek/on the enterprise herself, seem to treat each other as relative equals without regards to rank. it should not be assumed this will hold true for every other crew member and certainly not for those that are not stationed on the enterprise. the main crew all know each other and where they stand in relation to each other, they don’t need to establish positions and boundaries with each other, they’ve already got them.

I can easily dive back to my "reasons I ship it when others dont and I get why they dont" soap box because this touches on that but i wont and will just:

Given we know they have like 20 years of history by like .... I can't even remember what point exactly but that would definitely jump them to her early fleet years. Not just her first command, which is supposedly when the friendship began or at least what a lot of background and beta what's to push out. We can easily headcanon they met a few times prior to that first command point but friendship doesnt develop till that point.

Having said that .... let's imagine a young Janeway who just lost her fiance and father. Heartbroken, depressed, pulled from that point and brought back to the fleet.... coming across Lt Tuvok who recognizes her. Comments, logically of course, upon her loss. And when she reacts he cannot help but allow for this young officer to reach out for him as he knows humans tend to do. And this is their first hug. And he picks up so much from her.

So then when he tears into her command decisions years later and finds himself on her ship after it's rather easy, almost, for him to ignore the smaller touches and she finds it rather easy to respect his boundaries. But then when a mission goes wrong and she doubts herself its him who reaches for her and him reminding her that she is a more than qualified commander.

And if you dont want that earlier one is easy to imagine that their relationship is built off that mutual respect and boundaries with the moment of shift coming from a moment of doubt on her part. One of those moments we see in Voyager where he gently touches her hand and reminds her she is good at what she does.

Does any one else find it super amusing that Janeway and Tuvok are best friends when Janeway’s love language is physical affection and Tuvok would rather throw himself off a cliff than have someone touch him? Like Janeway has to touch EVERYONE. Friendly shoulder taps and elbow nudges are part of how she communicates. Tuvok is a vulcan and hates being touched, but I feel like his dislike for physical contact goes a bit further. He seems DEEPLY uncomfortable when other people touch him in a way other Star Trek vulcans don’t quite show.

I just want to see the early days of their friendship. How long did it take Janeway to train herself not to pat Tuvok on the shoulder or chest every 5 seconds? How long did it take Tuvok to trust Janeway enough to let the friendly elbow-bumps slide? Was there some instance where Janeway lost someone close to her (like one of her unfortunate fiancées) broke down crying and Tuvok watched her fall apart, thought the vulcan equivalent of “screw it,” and pulled her into a hug because helping his friend through her pain was more important to him than his distaste for being touched?

Girl Bakes Dead Grandpa Into Cookies, Feeds Him To Class

Everyone has a different way of grieving over the loss of a loved one. But it's not often that what a person needs to get through the difficult passing of a family member is just a tall glass of milk.

For one teen living in Davis, California, losing her grandpa was a bittersweet experience. Bitter because it's hard to cope with death, sweet because she took his cremated remains and baked them into sugar cookies. In early October (definitely too early for Halloween), two students were handing out cookies at their school, Da Vinci Charter Academy (which probably and now regrettably has a motto about being creative). A fellow student later told the local paper how when he took a bite out of his unnervingly sandy cookie, one of the girls, who had just lost her grandfather, whispered to him that she had added a "secret ingredient." The student was immediately worried that he'd been dosed with some kind of drug, only to then be told that he'd have to worry about digesting a whole different kind of angel dust.

As it turned out, the teen and her friend thought it would be a fitting sendoff for peepaw to add him to the cookies and share them with their friends. All said, at least nine teens ate gritty grandpappy cookies, some having been tricked into it, others volunteering for this once-past-a-lifetime experience. Though it wasn't actually that hard to get your hands on the cremains of this late, not-so-great-tasting man. Previously, the teen had offered one student a handful of the ashes in exchange for switching seats in class. And honestly, from that point on, they really should've expected that any future dealings with her would come with a side of dead grandpa.

After the school found out about the macabre macaroon incident, the police were brought in to open a case against the dead body baker. But because none of the kids got sick, Lt. Paul Doroshov decided to drop it, stating that even if anyone insisted on prosecuting the girl, they wouldn't know what crime to charge her with. Um, what about forced cannibalism? Or does it no longer count as human remains once you burn them that much? If so, does that mean burnt toast no longer qualifies as bread either? Forget the dead grandpa cookies, this girls may have stumbled upon both a fascinating philosophical quandary and a very easy to follow no-carb diet.

Optimizing Your Carnal Foundations 2

As a child, New York City was part of the area of the US East Coast hit by Hurricane Gloria. It was the first serious storm that I remember, mostly because the trees in my neighborhood were bent, broken, and in some cases completely uprooted. Since these trees had never been exposed to so high a level of wind they simply had no capacity to withstand it. They were too stiff to compensate and so they shattered. In contrast, palm trees, which tend to grown naturally in areas with high storm rates, can bend and adapt to almost anything due to the stress they are exposed to. High winds lead to deeper root growth, and the pressure on the turn keeps it nimble and adaptable to extremes.

Our carnal selves function in much the same way. If exposed to proper levels of effort and stress they will grow and adapt to be able to face more and more complicated challenges. If left unchallenged they will become stiff, brittle and easily broken. In addition, a well-stressed and compensated body will create the space internally for healthy emotions and cognitive capacities. This is part of our evolutionary heritage, as our ancestors’ ancestors expended considerable efforts as part of their life ways. Our bodies are made to move. Senses like balance and proprioception reply upon movement in order to maintain your sense of orientation to the outer world and within your own body respectively. Even in moments where you feel completely stillness, there are still micro-movements aimed and keeping these senses provided with data.

As mentioned previously our musculoskeletal system requires movement under stress in order to maintain itself. Even the central nervous system requires the experience of directing and responding the effects of effort in order to maintain its function and not slip into depression. Before starting a new movement related set of activities consider contacting your doctor or other qualified medical professional to ensure that you are capable of doing it and that it will help rather than harm you.

The foundation of movement skills is in mobility. Working to move the body fully on a regular basis and ensuring that the joints go through their full range of motion will provide needed nutrients to joints, breakdown stuck points of contact between tissues, and reduce residual tensions in the muscles. While there are a number of options in this area, if it is new to you Scott Sonnon's IntuFlow system is an excellent way to get started, both as a beginner's exercise on its own and as a mobility system for those who do additional training. This form of training will have positive impacts upon your posture, though you may find putting special focus on this area. The current culture of sitting especially at desks have a strongly negative upon the body, so compensation for this will be necessary.

Once mobility is restored to the body focusing upon compensating for past activities and bound tensions become important. The stretching modalities used in gymnastics or in forms derived from hathayoga are both excellent in this regard. Just remember on focusing bringing your body to the edge of tension, where it begins to have an impact on your breathing, rather than try to push through it. 10 to 15 minutes of this kind of stretching on a regular basis can undo years of activity and maladaptation rather rapidly. This can be thought of as Low-Intensity training.

Once mobility is restored and past and present tensions compensated for you can begin to focus upon on moderate and high-intensity exercises aimed at effecting heart rate. The classic measurement of Heart Rate Maximum (HRmax) is 220 - (your present age). Any exercise done above the resulting number will be of no recuperative use by your body and efforts above that number should be avoided. For moderate intensity activities that help build the muscles aim for a heart rate of 60%-80% of HRmax. For High-Intensity exercises aim for 80% to 100% HRmax. The specifics of these activities matter less than their duration of 20 to 30 minutes. While Moderate intensity activities can be done on a daily basis High Intensity is best done no more that once every four days to allow for sufficient recovery. When trained along with No and Low-Intensity modes these modes become means of actively recovering from your High-Intensity efforts.

While it helps if the skills in these areas are built early in life, one can start them at any time. Once you are capable of doing Moderate and High-Intensity exercise on a regular cycle you will find that in a relatively short span of time, on average six months, you will have effectively turned back the physiological clock nearly a decade. Which this is by no means easy, once it is made an inevitable part of your experience it will be simple to do.

As you experiment in these areas it is beneficial to also focus on learning to use breathing as a means of altering mood and controlling the effects of stress. The simplest place to start is to learn how to breathe from the diaphragm, which will cause your belly not your chest to do much of the breathing. Taking time to do 4 or 5 breaths in this manner when you are feeling tense will help to restore your focus. More advanced methods of coping with stress can be found in the writing of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, particularly his _On Combat_.

For many people having classes or formal activities that keep them accountable is beneficial. For the sake of movement learning, I often recommend two skills be trained in class environments at roughly the same time for at least six months: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Partnered Dancing. Together they will help you overcome nearly any anxiety you have in interacting with other people, will provide healthy skills at movement and grace, and are both a good deal of fun. If you can only do one, go against your type. If you are typically masculinely identified, seek out that dance class. If you are typically femininely identified find that Jiu-Jitsu class. Learn to move, breath and play, and you will have a powerhouse of energy for your Initiation like no other.

♂ Harriet had some words for Cade. I totally agree with her, he is an idiot. I don’t understand why he can’t even consider the idea that them sitting in the room with no instructor for more than 20 minutes could very likely be a test and if he doesn’t think that no one’s watching, he’s even more of an idiot than I thought.

♂ Carson and whoever was with him when Hsin passed out in the gym were saying that Hsin saved Bulldog, so they couldn’t just leave him there. So… Cade was referring to Vivienne as Bulldog? At first I thought he was talking about Doug. I have to reread that.

♂ Huh…

♂ No.

♂ Please… don’t go there, don’t let this be what I think it’s going to be.

♂ No…no no no no no no nooooo!

♂ Ohmygoodness. I cannot believe that this is what has been repressed all this time. I cannot believe that Hsin has had to live with the fact that he… I knew it had to do with Emilio’s death, but not this. Hsin… Oh, baby… How do you console that? And he buried it… All this time. Oh…goodness. This is what has been plaguing him… I want to curse! Oh, Hsin…

CHAPTER 06

♂ Hsin broke. Can’t believe it. If he could have just gone sooner. Why did he not go sooner?! Boyd…when he finds out…oh goodness, oh goodness…

♂ I feel like I should just stop. I read, therefore they are. So if I don’t read, Hsin will be the Hsin from Evenfall because I’ve already read it and he won’t be the Hsin of Afterimage. But then I’ll feel like I abandoned him. Good grief.

♂ Carhart, thank you for caring.

♂ So what’s the book on Vivienne’s shelf?

Continuity. Is Carhart’s hair blond or dark? It is blond in the Evenfall DC, but described as dark when he’s talking to Vivienne about Annabelle.

♂ Definitely have reservations about Annabelle being Hisn’s doctor. It’s easy enough to see that she may be professionally qualified, but she is not personally qualify. However, I’d like to believe that she has the best intentions or rather, she’s volunteering more for curiosity. So that she can really understand what happened with Lydia and well, Hsin is just Pandora’s Box of issues–a psychiatrist’s dream. It’s just a very strange thing; I can only imagine that she’s never had anything close to closure about the whole situation, so this might be an opportunity for her to get to the bottom of it. So… I’m kind of on Vivienne’s side in regards to Annabelle being in the position where it would be in her best interest to perform well and not sabotage Hsin’s care, but I’m still leery.

♂ Carhart’s conversation with Vivienne about Hsin and Boyd’s relationship… Goodness. Will I ever like this woman?

♂ I’m going to throw this out there because some people bite their nails, but I speculate. Also, my incomplete thoughts are starting to stick to each other. So, anyway… Boyd’s working on organizing the attic. Vivienne knows all, even that. It’s something he’s turned into a project, so he isn’t finished. While he’s off training, she goes in and retrieve’s the book Carhart saw on her shelf; Boyd cannot know about that book. Okay. I can’t stop wondering why she ever got married and had a kid. I don’t subscribe to the school of thought that says that standoffish or cold people must have been hurt in the past. Some people are just arses inside out. But I am inclined to believe that people who are naturally like Vivienne don’t have kids. They just don’t (ah, a little inadvertent Elle Woods for you). So, what if Boyd was a twin or the second child of the Beaulieu family? So, something happened to the other kid and Vivienne said to heck with feelings–emotions are for losers. Okay. I’m not tied to this, but it could be. But if only one thing can come from this, I’d like it to be the WHY of Vivienne and motherhood. That’d be like me growing celery. I hate celery and all that it stands for.

♂ Vivienne has known Boyd all his life, so you could think that her statement regarding his behavior being obsessive might have some weight to it, but you also have to remember that she acts as though belief in or reliance on the purpose or efficacy of human connections is a pointless exercise, so any connection, to her, probably seems obsessive. I do not like this woman. Especially since she believes that Boyd chose to be gay, though I’m not surprised, but I’m very glad that Carhart disagrees with her.

♂ This effin chapter…

CHAPTER 07

♂ Boyd’s arrogance rises again. So he assumed that the non-physical portion of the training would be easy enough for him, but Kassian clearly said that it seems like a small step but it is a giant leap. Boyd feels like he’s moving too slow, possibly in over his head, but I just think that he needs to get a grip. He’s not going to be able to understand everything immediately and I think it’s a good thing that he’s coming across this because it will probably work to combat his arrogance. If he doesn’t take to something so quickly, he can stop having snap decisions about everything and start taking more time to consider things and stop pulling out canned answers or canned perceptions. Though he is quick on his feet and I think that’s really good for him, makes it easier for him to deal with the unexpected, but him having to work a little harder for something will be good, it’ll pace him and basically make him stop to smell the flowers or alternatives.

♂ Mermaids. Torres your geek is showing.

♂ What will Boyd do with this information from that video with the cipher in the background? What will his fantastic brain do?

♂ Boyd ordered a book.

♂ I think it’s interesting that Boyd is frustrated with people thinking that he’s a blank slate and is only a reflection of the people around him, considering that back when he first came to the agency he pretty much was. He didn’t exist for anything, he wanted for nothing, no desires whatsoever; he was just there.

♂ Now Boyd is wondering about why Carhart put his name in. I would too, it’s very odd, but I don’t think he would use Boyd, but I still wonder why he chose him.

♂ This line of thought is interesting. Boyd thinking that he is not equal with Hsin. He thinks it’s most apparent when they are involving themselves with sex. Yes, Hsin is holding back information and Boyd is picking up on it. It’s very interesting that these things are connecting and I did say before that I was worried about Hsin using sex as a crutch rather than mutual enjoyment. So we’ll see where this goes with Boyd.

♂ So I guess he was preoccupied with everything else as well as taking his relationship and his interactions with Hsin for granted and everything else I thought.

♂ This is a nasty spiral Boyd is heading down. He’s just going to have that one-sided conversation and come to conclusions without bringing in the other party. My best friend used to do that and it drove me insane, like you can’t just decide things for two people when only one person is present. So I think that he’s in danger of coming to a conclusion that’s going to make things worse. Hopefully he measures his fear of Hsin not feeling the same way about him against the good things that he feels when he thinks of Hsin and trust those things instead of falling back into his old way of thinking he would never be good enough. If he doesn’t find out about Hsin’s breakdown once he comes out of training, if he makes the decision I think he’s going to make, he’s going to distance himself and Hsin is going to think that Boyd found out and is doing exactly what he thought he would do: pull away. So this is just like.. man, I don’t.. I don’t want an O'Henry. This is all conjecture again because I haven’t even finished this chapter. Still, no self-fulfilling prophecies.

♂ I suppose Boyd hasn’t quite gone all the way down that spiral but he is close. Though I’m glad he is giving himself some time to think about this. I wish he would have thought about it before when Hsin could have really used his help, but better late than never. But I am still concerned about what’s going to happen when he finds out about Hsin’s breakdown. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and a hollowness in my gut…

CHAPTER 08

♂ Hsin is one of my most favorite characters. Santino has actually written two of my most favorite characters, but anyway I think that it’s interesting how I sometimes forget how old Hsin is. I have this feeling about him–he is so pure-hearted. It’s so strange to say that considering how everybody else sees him, but I do think that’s it. A pure heart; not that he never has any sort of malice against someone, because he really does want to rip some people to shreds, but there is this basic pureness about him. And I think that it’s there because he didn’t have a normal childhood, that gestation period where kids get to explore themselves. He was in a terrible situation with his mother, taken out of it and then put in a better situation in some ways, but altogether a very unstable and horrific situation with his father. Who trains a child to be an assassin? And this is what he went through, this is the life that he lived, so he never got to be kid. There’s just that time where you get to grow and develop and learn who you are–through play and idle time and interacting with a variety of people including people your own age, but from the beginning Hsin was limited to a certain kind of people and he was always being told what to do. Unfortunately he was being told early on that he would serve the purpose of making money. Then, with his father, he was being told how to do these outrageous things and that’s just not how people develop…properly anyway. It’s difficult to become a whole person when you aren’t used to making overarching decisions for your life; you make decisions due to the situation, but not really about yourself. It was the mission or for the greater good–whatever that really means–but it was never about his personal well-being. Well… sort of, but only in regards to his ability to live through something, so that he could stay alive to do it again another day.

♂ I hurt for him.

♂ I’m disappointed in Carhart. He was talking to Hsin in his psychiatric ward room and then Hsin said that he was feeling sick before his last episode and Carhart asks for clarification, but also offers “sleep deprivation.” Now I know Carhart has a more than I’m-your-superior affection for Hsin, but he should not let that interfere with his objective. He should know that you don’t feed people information if you want to get an honest answer. He’s feeding Hsin these ideas, and Hsin will just shrug his shoulders and cop out without really answering the question. Now, I’m hoping Hsin is going to be honest about all of this at some point, but Carhart is starting off all wrong.

♂ It’s kind of low for Carhart to pull out the Boyd card, but Hsin needs to hear it. I can’t deal with him giving up. I can’t deal with him just letting go. I know it hurts. I know it’s been hurting for so long, but if he would just try, just really try, it could be better. No promises. Really, no promises, but–and not just for Boyd, although I think that is probably the greatest motivation, but for himself–just try to find some peace, try to get to the bottom of these things, try to excavate these horrors out of your mind. Just try.

♂ Okay, so I’m with Annabelle. I’m with her and her wanting to treat Hsin, but she shouldn’t have touched him. I know they just had this whole sort of heartfelt moment, a moment of honesty, but she should refrain from touching him. Regardless of how much they progress, she still looks like her sister and she just should not touch Hsin. It’s a bad idea.

♂ “He could appreciate an attractive build when he was presented with one.” Yeah, so you think Kassian’s hot, huh Boyd?

♂ Oh boy… Knives.

♂ Wait a second, did Toby just get a boner for Kassian?

♂ Oh my goodness, he did!

♂ I needed that laugh.

♂ It’s even funnier with Boyd dissecting it, breaking it down piece by piece and how annoyed he is at the whole thing. And freaking out because he thinks Kassian might ask him about it!

♂ Boyd and Kassian are talking about how Hsin should actually be there instead of him and it’s got me thinking yeah, definitely, but oh how I would love to see Hsin training somebody. I can’t even put together the thoughts to even come close to what that would be like. I think it would just be hilarious and kind of scary.

♂ I like the easy way Boyd and Kassian interact with each other. I really wish I had read the whole summertime incident just to see them interacting. It’s nice. I mean, eventually I will read the uncut version of Evenfall, but not yet.

CHAPTER 09

♂ Hsin has started his sessions with Annabelle and he has a long road ahead of him. I’m worried because no matter what he does, the advances he makes, the revelations he has, or how he heals, he will still have to contend with the unforgiving minds and attitudes of the people at the Agency. The people who refuse to understand, refuse to show compassion, refuse to see anything but a monster in him. And if he has to be constantly reminded about how people see him, how low their opinions are of him, it is going to be a struggle for him to ever get anywhere, to overcome anything. This is exactly why he needs to tell Boyd. Boyd will be on his side if he can just have that one person on his side. He’s got more, actually, he’s got Ryan, he’s got Carhart, even Luke understands, but he just…he just won’t let it happen.

♂ I suppose habits really are hard to break. Hsin has committed to trying, but his attitude is still resistant. He’s still doubtful. He just doesn’t believe it’s worth it or that it’s even going to work. No point in wasting time, he feels, but he has to change that. He has to play along until it takes hold. Fake it ‘til you make it.

♂ One hour? Hsin only gets one hour? He needs at least 2 hours just to get past the BS. What are they going to do in one hour? And it’s not like he’s seeing her everyday. Carhart said maybe one or two times a week. One hour. What about the rest of the week? Now, okay, I know it’s overwhelming to constantly be digging into your brain and figuring things out, but he needs more than an hour session. He does. Or he needs more than just one or two or days a week.

♂ Hsin expressing why he wants to do this and for what reason… Him talking about his friendship with Boyd… Oh my goodness that was just the most beautiful thing. It was just so much. Hsin!

♂ So I get why Annabelle thinks it’s sad and pathetic. It’s more a sense of pity than disdain, but I still don’t like her feeling that way about Hsin expressing his nearly raw feelings.

♂ Captain Scott. I forgot about him. I haven’t heard his name since the prologue. And now I feel like I need to brush my teeth. Let me rewind for a moment, though. When I first questioned who the heck Annabelle married and then subsequently found out that she was pushed into a marriage with an arsehole I think I said in my live read of the prologue that somebody should tear him apart or I thought it anyway, but my second thought– No I’m pretty sure I said it because I know I followed it up with “and I hope it’s Hsin.” But I erased that because even though I did feel that way I did not want him to have to kill anyone. I did not want to put him in that position. But I knew, I just I knew that this was going to be a thing. I knew that Annabelle was going to end up helping Hsin. Rather than a notion, vague or otherwise, it was more like a hope, you know? That whole interaction between her and Hsin at Willowbrook. I just had a feeling it was going to come to this. Then, perhaps he would end up protecting her from Captain Scott. Now, this is all back in the prologue; these thoughts I had, they were completely baseless because that was the prologue and that was as far as I got. But now that we’re here, I’m feeling it a lot more. And all I’ve read is the assistant announce his arrival. I still don’t want Hsin to kill anyone, especially in a situation where he’s defending someone, because he does not need anymore of that. It’ll just get blown out of proportion. However, I feel like it would be the perfect turn of events if he would actually protect her. Particularly because of their history and current relationship, that would definitely influence his actions. But again, I don’t want Hsin to be put in that position, but I still think it would just be strangely satisfying if he were the one to give Captain Scott a beat down.

♂ Now that I see what an utter arse Captain Scott is, I feel like I really need somebody to serve him.

♂ The way that stories often go with multiple personality disorder they have a child who is traumatized and or a person who is traumatized and this other personality comes out to protect them. This personality is usually stronger, aggressive, plays as though they don’t care, sometimes manifesting in flippancy, but their whole purpose of being there is to protect the host personality because they feel weak and they can’t get the protection that they need from outside sources. So they create this person in their head who takes over when they feel threatened in some way. It’s cliche because it’s kind of a go to, but it remains a reality. Here– Wait. Isn’t it called something else now? I have to look that up. Anyway, here I’m wondering, as Hsin talks to Annabelle about what he feels when he goes berserk–before, during, and after–if this is what has happened or maybe instead of another personality it’s a mode? Hsin’s blind rage was the protective profile that he developed so that he wouldn’t feel vulnerable anymore? Or even if he did, for when no one was there to help him, he created this personality or mode that was ruthless and would stop at nothing to make sure that he was safe. Punishment was meted out indiscriminately, so even though there were people who he knew would otherwise not be a threat, they would be caught up in the chaos. I mean, he’s under a constant threat when he’s in a storm, but he doesn’t go into a blind rage, so…that’s why I’m leaning towards a mode. Um… Where was I going with this? Did I just lose myself? I think I did.

♂ Oh! So what if you have Hsin, Mission Mode Hsin, and then Blind Rage Hsin? Because there has to be a difference, right?

♂ Very interesting as Annabelle and Hsin talk about his time on the Fourth and he’s talking about him not doing well when he is immobile and helpless. Now doesn’t that sound like someone else? Boyd perhaps? And his fear of being held down or immobilized and left alone? Now this sort of rang a bell back when Hsin was put in the box and Boyd rescued him, Boyd said as much, but here, having Hsin say it this way, it just totally connects for me.

♂ Oh! What did I just say?! So Annabelle is thinking defense mechanism… mechanism, mechanism, mechanism… like boss level fight or flight, but without the option of flight.

♂ Okay, so yeah, DID…uhh… Dissociative identity disorder. That’s what it’s called now. Okay. But Annabelle’s not convinced?

♂ Psychotic Major Depression. That’s a new one.

♂ Okay. Okay. So it’s just one more step, one more step for me to get what I want. I said that I just want a character to break down and confide in the person that they should be confiding in and Hsin is making that choice. Please don’t let anything happen between now and the time he gets to talk to Boyd please don’t let anything happen. And please don’t let him punk out. He has to tell him. He has to. I will flip my ish if he does not.
