Raising Them Right
Part 8
Once James’ knot had gone down he helped carry Regulus to the shower. Regulus felt so cherished in James’ arms. He held him like he was something precious, like he mattered. He held Regulus close to his chest as they both stood under the hot water. He helped him wash and rubbed along his shoulders and back, easing any knots in his muscles. (He only wanted Regulus worrying about one knot wink wink). Regulus tilted his head back into the stream of the water and brought his arms up to rinse the shampoo from his hair. James tracked the motion, his eyes lingering on the lean lines of Regulus’ body, how his stomach stretched. James wanted to lick the water droplets off of his thighs.
James shook himself and quickly washed his hair once Regulus moved out from under the water. He left Regulus to relax under the stream while he went down to prepare the potion for Regulus. He was halfway done when Regulus joined him. He double checked the book he left laying on the counter and stirred the contents of his cauldron 4 times clockwise and then 3 times counter clockwise. Regulus watched him with interest, leaning over to skip the recipe book.
“Did you ever learn potions?” James asked. He peered at Regulus from the corner of his eye watching for his reaction. Regulus stiffened and moved away from the book like he was caught doing something he shouldn’t have been. He toed at the ground not turning to look at his Alpha. “Reggie?” James knew the answer, he knew his Omega was shutting down. Bringing him back was something of an art at this point. Regulus had to feel like he was the one in control.
Waves of shame were rolling off his Omega. James cleared his throat loudly before he wrapped his arms around his Omega. “I can teach you if you want. Or we can get a tutor. I think you would like Potions.” James said matter of factly. He kissed his Omega on the cheek and gave him a quick squeeze before he stepped away to turn the heat off the cauldron.
James was moving the cauldron to the back of the stove to cool when he heard a familiar whoosh of the floo. He gave a puzzled look at Regulus who also looked confused. They leaned cautiously around the divide in the wall that separated the kitchen and the parlor.
“...And I am saying, Moony, that he is my brother and I will see him whenever I like!” A very posh yet snotty accent cut into the room breaking the comfortable silence. James and Regulus watched as the Omega and Alpha pair stumbled onto the carpet, brushing the soot from their bodies. Remus opened his mouth to say something but Sirius glared and shouted over him, “REGULUS!”
“Geeze Sirius, what if they are sleeping!” Remus hissed trying to move in front of the Omega to block him from running upstairs.
“Regulus never sleeps in, they are not sleeping.” Sirius snaps back. He fakes left and then goes right dancing around his Alpha and runs for the stairs.
“You really going to go up there and risk seeing your baby brother in a compromising position Pads?” Remus warns crossing his arms over his chest, he knows by the way Sirius freezes mid step that he has won.
Sirius turns back to glare at Remus. He holds his gaze as he shouts again, “REGULUS!”
James and Regulus watch the exchange mutely from the sidelines. After the second shout Regulus tumbles out from his temporary hiding spot. “Sirius, stop screaming for five seconds. I am right here.” Regulus scolds as he catches himself and walks smoothly into the parlor.
“Regulus!” Sirius said, quieter than the previous two times but still loud as was the nature of his brother. Sirius hauled Regulus into a one sided hug and scented him before Regulus could shove him away. Sirius frowned at the slowly fading shame, guilt, and stress scent on his brother. His eyes caught the Alpha coming into the room and he glared.
“Sirius.” Remus’ tone was in warning and Sirius whipped around and stuck his tongue out at the taller Alpha before turning back to his brother. Remus just sighed and rubbed a hand over his face.
Sirius glared once more at James before putting himself between him and Regulus pulling the smaller Omegas focus.
“I had to come see you. I didn't know Remus got to be at your wedding and I have missed you so much Reggie.”
“Don't call me that.” Regulus snipped. Sirius couldn't stop the smile from forming on his face. His brother was still his brother. As kids Sirius always tried to get Regulus to use a nickname but alas his baby brother was not exactly ‘fun’.
“Running away from your family will do that.” Regulus looked fierce but his voice had lost a lot of its edge. James watched them both as he came into the room. Regulus could handle himself, he had seen that for himself, but James didn't want his Omega getting worked up before his heat. They should have plenty of time before it hits, Remus and Sirius wouldn't notice the slight change in his scent.
Sirius’s face falls but he quickly shakes himself. “Where are your manners? Omegas are supposed to offer tea and snacks when guests arrive.” Sirius shook a mock finger in his brothers face.
Regulus sighs and closes his eyes for a moment before opening them and putting on his fake smile. There is no teeth and it doesn't reach his eyes but any outsider would see a well behaved Omega. “Most Omegas know to send word before barging into another's home.” Regulus snipped before saying in a fake sweet voice, “Sirius, would you like to join me in the kitchen for a cup of tea?”
Sirius rolled his eyes but held out his elbow for Regulus, “Oh, yes please.” He countered in mock innocents.
Regulus promptly ignored it and looked for James to tell him where they were going. Sirius must have had a similar idea as he looked over Regulus’s shoulder and shouted, “Oi! Knothead!”
Regulus stiffened, what is his idiot brother doing! You don't talk to Alphas like that! He moves to grab Sirius’s arm and pull him away before their parents… then he stops. Their parents? It's not their parents. Regulus takes a deep breath and tries to shove the feeling of dread down.
James and Remus’s heads had snapped up at the same time to look at the two Omegas. Sirius hooked his arm with Regulus and jerked his head towards the kitchen, “Tea time.” Regulus dragged his brother to the kitchen before he could say anything else.
Remus let out a tired sigh, “Sorry ‘bout him. He is a bit…” Remus struggled to find the right word to sum up Sirius Orion Black. James just grinned, looking from Remus to Sirius and back again. “I like him!” He declared and Remus looked more relaxed. They followed after their Omegas, James seemed amused by the intruding Omega but Remus was nervous, something smelled off.
Sirius controlled most of the conversation and alternated between telling stories about what happened with him after running away from home and grilling James.
“So then I dropped to my knees to pick them all up and they kept falling out of my arms but I kept trying to pick them up. Remus was there, of course, and he came over and held out his shirt so I could fill it with oranges and then he helped me bring them up front… and well after that I just couldn't leave him alone.” Remus was blushing looking away from them at the story. James has his head resting on his fist and he watches them both with warm eyes. Regulus squints at his brother, “Gross.” Sirius just rolls his eyes.
“Oh sorry Regulus, please tell me how you met your Alpha then. Was it before or after his parents had purchased you.” Sirius quipped. Remus snapped his head back and hissed “Sirius” under his breath.
Regulus growled low in his chest but James pulled him closer and rubbed a thumb over his mating mark calming him. James feels a little itchy, maybe it's the uncomfortable shift in conversation, or maybe it's his mate's upcoming heat. He rolls his neck to shake the crawling sensation, Remus tracks the movement realization dawning on him.
“Actually, Sirius, I fell in love with his scent. During one of the Socials at the Malfoy’s. I caught his scent and knew he was the one for me.”
Regulus looked at him wide eyed, “You never told me that.” He whispered. James smiled down at him and kissed his forehead.
Maybe it was the memory of that night on top of Regulus’s impending heat but the scent was stronger to James. Sweeter.
“Alright, lover boy, I think I've waited long enough.” Sirius says as he stands and stretches. James sees his shirt ride up and where Regulus would have smooth pale skin, Sirius has a tattoo that James can't decipher. He snaps his gaze up trying to remember what the older Black had said. Sirius flicks his hair over his shoulder and James doesn't see a mating mark on his neck.
He glances at Remus who is watching him with a careful expression on his face. Right Remus’s unmated mate.
“Time for the talk.” Sirius says it like it is ominous instead of a slew of threats that he will never have to act on. James chuckles but moves to follow Sirius. They don't go too far just out of ear shot.
Regulus feels a strange pull in his gut. His Omega doesn't like seeing his Alpha with another Omega. He scolds himself, it's just Sirius. They are just talking.
“Regulus?”
He startles at the sound but calms when he sees Remus approaching slowly. “Sorry, Remus, yes?” He stumbles over his words, his eyes flick back to James and then back to Remus.
Remus stays a far enough distance away that if Regulus reached out he wouldn't be able to touch him at this rate.
“Do you know when James’ last rut was?” Remus asks in a low cautious voice. He nods his head over in James’ direction with a raise of his eyebrows.
Regulus is confused, they never spoke about James’ ruts. He realizes that he has no idea when his mate's last rut was. But why did that matter? He looked back to James who was leaning closer to Sirius now.
“Regulus.” Remus said a little strain in his voice.
“I-I don't know. We never talked about it.” It must be his heat but he doesn't like Remus standing so close all of sudden. He never had a problem with the Alpha before, his coffee and leather book scent was always so warm and comfortable.
Remus sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Are you going into heat soon?”
Regulus was taken aback by that, he didn't think they were close enough to be discussing things like this yet.
“Regulus,” Remus starts seeing the shift in his features, “I don't mean to pry but I think James is in rut right now and it would be better for you if you were going into heat. Have you spent a rut with an Alpha before?”
James is laughing at something Sirius said and Sirius places a hand on his forearm, laughing with him. A grumble rises in Regulus’ chest and his focus is pulled back to Remus once his words register.
“No!” He is almost insulted but it is a fair question all things considered.
“Do you know what to expect? I have to get Sirius out of here but I can bring Peter back and we can hold James…”
“No!” Regulus says stepping closer reaching for Remus’s hand before pulling back at the last moment. “No, it's okay I can handle him. I’ve read about… I can handle him.”
James can't figure out what Sirius’s scent is. He tried catching it at his flat but all James could smell was Remus. It would make sense, his eyes flick back to the smooth spot where a mating mark would go, that Remus would scent him so much his own scent was muted. Especially if Sirius didn't want to take Remus’ mark.
The creeping feeling was back, he rolled his neck again. James feels his body sway closer, trying to catch the scent.
“Okay you distract him and Sirius and I will floo back home. Tell Ren to lock it after we leave, yea?” A bead of sweat had appeared on Remus’s temple. He pushed a hand through his hair and let out a slow breath.
“Don't run, just be casual and I’ll pull his focus.” Regulus says and rounds the corner of the counter moving into James’s line of sight and away from the living room.
James can smell Remus somewhere, his eyes scan the room and he spots him. Remus is looking at Regulus and James can feel a growl in his throat. He tries to cough to disguise it because no he isn’t protective like that around Remus. Remus is his best mate. But his best mate is watching his Omega rather closely.
James’ attention is pulled again when Sirius pulls his hair back from his neck again and scratches the back of his head absentmindedly. There is the scent, James thinks. Carmel and leather. It just blended with Remus’s so well he wasn't able to separate the two. But now it was wafting towards him and it smelled so good.
James jerked his head back and took a hesitant step back as well. He should not be scenting other Omegas right now. Where is his Omega? Why is there another Alpha here? This Omega isn’t mated. James could fix that.
James’ mind starts to spiral into an abyss of mate. Mate. mate. And then he hears something to the side and his head whips around to see the Alpha he smells. The Alpha is moving towards him and the Omega. He gives a warning growl and that stops the Alpha in his tracks. Good, he thinks.
“James.” His head snaps around again. Oh there is his Omega. He growls again because there is still another Alpha here. Why is there an Alpha here? His Omega is going into heat soon. His Omega smells so good.
“What are you doing?” A voice snaps him out of his head and his vision focuses on the other Omega. He growls again and the other Omega doesn't look scared but rather unimpressed.
“James, baby, look at me.” He hears the pretty Omega again.
Remus can tell James is almost too far gone at this point. He didn't want to fight James but he could if he needed to. He could at least hold him off until Sirius got away. Remus silently swore under his breath when Sirius spoke. He wasn't aware of what was happening. Sirius took a lot of suppressants when he was on the run from his family. Remus had only just convinced him a few months ago that he should go off of them. Sirius couldn't smell very well but his own scent had finally come back.
As soon as James’ attention was on Regulus Remus waved Sirius over. Sirius glared at him and shook his head. Fuck. Stubborn, stubborn, Omega.
Remus didn't want to say anything in case it brought James’ attention to him. He looked to Regulus for help.
Regulus could see the panic on Remus’s face and his idiot brother was just standing there in between James and Regulus.
He tried to think quickly and his hands went to his shirt. “James, baby, come here please.” He unbuttoned the first three buttons with deft fingers. James’s eyes narrowed and he stepped around Sirius, getting closer.
Sirius turned to look where James was going and his jaw dropped. “Regulus…” He began but Regulus gave him a sharp look and jerked his head to the side.
Sirius turned to see Remus still standing by the doorway to the parlor, a safe distance away, waving him over. Sirius rolled his eyes but stomped over to Remus. “What the fuck are you…” Sirius was cut off by another growl. This time it wasn't a warning. James had turned at the sound of his voice and now all his attention was on Remus and Sirius.
Remus grabbed Sirius and pulled him close to his chest, covering his mouth with his hand trying to keep him quiet. They both froze at the sound of James’ growl and Sirius turned to see the Alpha. James’s eyes were rimmed red, he rolled his shoulders again.
“James is in rut.” Remus hissed in Sirius’ ear.
“Fuck.” Sirius breathed.
Behind James, Regulus stomped his foot in frustration. That seemed to pull the Alpha’s attention a little. Regulus chirped and let out a purr, keeping all his focus on James.
James hesitated at first but the pull of his Omega was too much. He turned just enough so he could see him but also keep an eye on the other Alpha in the room.
Regulus finished unbuttoning his shirt and let it slide slowly down his arms before pooling on the floor. Sirius slapped a hand over Remus’s eyes. He looked over to the floo and mapped out the route they would need to take to make it there quickly.
James’s mind was now fully focused on the pretty Omega. Regulus took a step backwards and James took two forwards. Oh.
That could work.
Regulus met Sirius’s eyes and gave him a small nod before he turned and ran.
James took off after him with a howl and Sirius yanked Remus forward towards the floo.
The last thing Remus saw was James tearing through the house after Regulus.
Sirius threw the floo powder in and said the destination before shoving Remus through and following close behind.
Remus fell sprawled out onto the carpet and Sirius tripped over him falling on top of him.
“Fuck.” Sirius groaned. “Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!” Remus managed to roll over and pull Sirius close to him scenting him all over. Remus ran his wrists over Sirius’s neck and pulled his wrists to his own neck. He nuzzled under his chin and pulled him into a harsh kiss.
He did this more for his own possessive feelings rather than out of necessity. Once his Alpha felt that he had covered his Omega with his scent he lay back on the carpet, limbs fanned out like a star.
“Can we start calling before we go over there now?” Remus said with far too much sarcasm for Sirius’ taste. But Sirius couldn't argue, he had yet to find a single fault with the Alpha, except maybe that he needed to keep better track of his ruts! At least his brother seemed happy and even though Sirius would argue against it his brother had been right. Sirius did like James. He was kind, smart, funny, and just the right amount of dorkiness that he felt his brother needed in his life.
[]
Regulus was fast. He knew he was. He had outrun his parents plenty of times. He, however, had never tried to outrun an Alpha in rut. The sound of James right behind him kept him going. He had circled around the lower level once before taking off up the stairs. He knew they were practically alone, the house was out in the middle of nowhere. But the thought of getting stuck suffering his heat and James’ rut not in his bed was too much. He had started nesting, kind of, and the bed was now his favorite place in the house. He felt safe and comfortable there. His Omega self wanted to be in the bed.
James wanted the pretty Omega. That was his Omega! Then the Omega ran from him! He gave chase, he tore through the house knocking over furniture. The Omega tore up the stairs and James took them four at a time, his long legs propelling him upwards. At the landing the Omega used the railing to throw themselves towards a room but didn't shut the door. James managed to tackle them down to the ground just before the bed.
The Omega stopped trying to get away and pulled James closer. They both were gasping for breath. The Omegas chest rising and falling quickly. James held his body weight up more to give them room to breath.
“James?” Oh his voice was so pretty, he wanted the Omega to keep talking to him. He purred and pressed his nose to the mating mark along his neck. Mine.
“Yes, James, yours. All yours. Your Omega.” James didn't think he had said that outloud. Goddess, Regulus looked gorgeous right now with his cheeks flushed and his chest heaving.  Regulus tried to wiggle out from under him but James held on tighter. He was stuck, well at least he made it to the bedroom.
James nuzzled against his neck and then licked over his scent glands, gathering the scent on his tongue. It made his head dizzy but he wanted more. He started licking and sucking a path down the Omegas neck to his chest. Regulus’ breath catches when James licks over his nipples and he arches into his touch. The chase along with James’ rut must have made his body go into heat a lot quicker than it normally did. Instead of a slow build up to the pain it came crashing down on Regulus all at once.
He wiggled under the Alpha, thrusting his hips up, trying to get more friction. His touch was not enough, he needed more. James was spurred on by the Omega's smaller body rubbing against his. James growled low in his throat, there was too much in the way, he wanted to feel the burning touch of his Omegas body against his.
“James, James. I need- fuck - I need you.” Regulus tried to get out from under James but settled for just trying to get his trousers off when James wouldn't let him up.
James growled again, softer this time, and Regulus stilled underneath him. The Alpha was in full rut at this point, all rational thought out the window, just a single mind set of mate.
Regulus tried to hold on to what little mind he had left but as the Alphas red eyes met his he knew he had lost.
James watched as the gold ring slowly took over the cool gray of his Omegas eyes. The Alpha in him chuffed knowing his Omega was in heat because of him. James ripped his pants the rest of the way off and the scent of his Omega hit him full force. He pulled the Omegas hips up and licked from the cleft of his ass to the tip of his cock. Smacking his lips at the taste.
Regulus’s head felt floaty as the heat settled low in his belly. He whimpered, he didn't want to slow build up. He wanted his Alpha to be rough with him. He wanted him to pin him down, he could feel the slick dripping down his thighs. He let out a yelp when he was flipped over onto his belly. James pinned him down but his neck with one hand and pulled his hips up with the other.
“Yes. yes. yes. “ Regulus chanted as he felt the hot press of James’ cock, his back arching further to take him deeper. Regulus could feel the half formed knot at the base once James was fully sheathed inside.
James couldn't hold back, he couldn't think. His hips started pistoning in and out of Regulus. His grip is tight and Regulus is sure he will have several finger sized bruises all over his boy once this is over.
“Alpha, please, -fuck-, yes mhummph-” Regulus is a blubering mess. He tries to hold himself up on his elbows and knees but James has his face pressed into the carpet. His hand around the back of his neck, fingers pressing into his mating mark.
He shutters as the knot starts to catch his rim at every thrust but James hasn't slowed down. Regulus moans, he feels close, he just needs his Alpha's knot. James has been so talkative during the two times they had sex. His words alone had been enough to bring Regulus over the edge but now the Alpha was surprisingly quiet. Just grunts and heavy panting as he thrusts into Regulus.
His thrusts start to get sloppy and Regulus feels the knot catch. James doesn't stop, he just can't pull out anymore so his hips roll against Regulus’s backside as ropes of cum pulse inside of him.
Regulus must have passed out afterwards because the next thing he knows he is opening his eyes. His belly feels sticky against the rough carpet and everything is too hot and sensitive for his skin.
James is still locked inside of him. Regulus shifts his shoulders experimentally and finds his body very sore and stiff. The movement causes some of the combined fluids inside of him to spurt out between him and James.
He moans and tries to pull away but the knot is still firm and James’ hold tightens instinctively in his sleep.
“Ren?” Regulus whispers and he hears the familiar crack in the hallway. He lifts his head but can't see Ren. She is probably there just out of sight.
“Ren, if you can hear me, can you lock the floo and then please send up some water and food. Thank you.” He doesn't hear a response but a tray appears before him with bottles of water and a variety of snack-like foods.
Regulus manages to drink and eat before tucking himself against the Alpha and falling back asleep.

Tej and Zaid had been together? Blinking stupidly, Lokni tried to wrap his head around this new revelation. When it sunk in, his ears went hot as blood rushed to his face. Oh Creator, Zaid and Tej had fucked- Suddenly Lokni's phone felt heavier in his pocket, as if Tej would suddenly give him a call, informing the world that Lokni knew exactly who Zaid's ex was. Suddenly Lokni felt stiff with guilt. He thought Tej was a great guy, a little prickly, but every cactus had its own vibrant flowers. At the same time, Zaid hadn't done any harm to Lokni, quite the opposite in fact. Maybe Lokni would keep his connection to both of them as his dirty little secret. They were both decent people from what Lokni gathered, and he didn't want to cut ties unnecessarily. Then again, why had they broken up in the first place? But that was none of Lokni's business.
When Zaid analyzed Lokni's lack of love-life, he felt put on the spot in a way. Unable to meet Zaid's intense eyes, Lokni toed the ground with his boot, as if maybe if he did it enough, eventually he'd make a hole deep enough to disappear into. "Maybe it was- a bit of two of those things. I've been a bit shy- and I'm not quick to notice things like that. I couldn't even tell you what my coworkers thought of me if I tried, and I've been working with those same knuckle-heads for more than a decade now." As he was admitting all of this, his face began to grow almost painfully hot as he remembered a certain person who had expressed interest in him- quite recently in fact. "The only person that I know has been interested me was a man-" he mumbled out, suddenly feeling too vulnerable for his liking. Alex was a looker,' that was undeniable, like most folks on the island. Despite Lokni's own lack of self-confidence and experience, his body had responded. What did that mean? Any extra thoughts that Lokni had were shattered as the columns of flame began to lick up the trees after the deafening crash. With the sudden eruption of chaos, Lokni needed Zaid now more than ever to help quell this wildfire. Visions of the burning plains flared within Lokni's mind, that same sense of panic threatening to bubble over. "What about you- your plasma- Can it put out fire?" Lokni shouted over the roar of the flames. It hadn't seemed flammable when he had witnessed it before, and at this point, he needed all the help he could get. There was no way in hell that he could extinguish this all on his own. Lokni had to hand it to Zaid, the delivery was great. Maybe all that time as a chef calling the big shots had helped him embrace his inner Gordon Ramsey. But now was not the time to thinkin' about that.
Tumblr media
Zaid's words stung, echoing throughout his mind. It was true, Lokni led an existence of a whole lot of self-pitying and at the same time accomplishing nothing. Always too preoccupied with staying on neutral ground. Even now, Lokni was keeping secrets, trying to stay on good terms with Tej and Zaid. Pathetic. Damn right, this wasn't high school anymore, and yet there Lokni was, sitting on the bleachers letting life pass by listlessly. Would he ever wake up? The emotion welled within him, his chest felt constricted, as if his bones were made of glass so that if he inhaled too deeply they would shatter and pierce him internally. The baleful bleating of the deer echoed in his ears, reminding him that there wasn't much time. He had to grow the fuck up. Zaid's fingertip against his arm was the only thing he felt for a brief moment, and then it began. An intense stinging rain began to fall with indiscriminate vengeance. He focused on the sensation, letting the pain wash over him. Taking slow steps to not interrupt his concentration. As he walked, the rain followed as if connected by an invisible tether. Carefully, Lokni led the rain over to where the pitiful deer was attempting to escape. The rain began to pelt at the flame-enveloped trees, eliciting little hisses as the rain fought to extinguish the columns of flame. It was beginning to quell the inferno, but it wasn't enough. "Zaid- I could really use some help if you got any fuel in you!" Lokni called out, trying to focus on the rain, but feeling it waver even as he spoke to Zaid.
"You're joking," Zaid's tone thick with British disbelief as Lokni self-deprecated about his own appeal towards others. Unable to stop a bit of 'nosy uncle-ji', Zaid broke down Lokni's lovelife - or lack thereof. "You, not popular among the women? No offense mate, but unless you're rampantly shy or a monster back at home, I find that hard to believe. Might be you just never noticed, ey? Too caught up in your work to realize when some pretty thing was trying to flirt with you."
Now that, Zaid would believe of Lokni. He didn't think Lokni was innocent exactly, but certainly nowhere close to a player. Zaid wasn't either, honestly; but when he saw what he wanted, he went and got it. Case in point. "Mate, my 'someone' is on this island. If you ever run into a Tej Virani, tell him...actually don't tell him you know me. No doubt he'll count that as a strike against you, and you don't deserve that." A small harrumph. "If you haven't guessed, we're exes."
Lokni tried to be kind. An impromptu vacation indeed. The longer they were all stuck here, it seemed less chance of going home; but Zaid just let it go. Lokni had his own problems, his own people wondering where he disappeared. Perhaps the big man hoped the same, for them. He didn't correct Lokni about the 'Cheeky' part of Nandos, instead nodding in approval. "Sounds like you know how to appreciate a good meal, mate. That's a good thing."
Lokni seemed a very young 30, but didn't most younger people these days? Tej wasn't that much older than Lokni. Zaid felt forever-35, himself, if he was honest. The new decade hadn't clicked in yet. And their fennel and mashua discoveries were summarily cut short at the arrival of the stranger, which then led to the circle of fire.
"Honestly if I didn't know any better..." Zaid started to mutter, but stopped himself from speculating. In truth, the fate of one tiny deer shouldn't matter. Technically it didn't, Zaid told himself - but a fire in the wilderness was dangerous. If it caught and spread, they'd have a forest fire on their hands, which was an absolutely terrifying thought. They were so deep in (the top of Tower was still visible to their left, but nothing else), Zaid could only hope that odd kid had found Lindi or Elijah and was organizing a water-train right now. (with what buckets? and from where? The beach seemed so far away...)
Lokni was their only hope - and he met Zaid's eyes with his own urgent warm ones, and asked for the one thing Zaid had gotten raked over the coals for trying before.
With Selin, ironically. Zaid's attempt to prompt her 'powers', get her to shrink by being an absolute dickhead to her had backfired spectacularly. And now, here was Lokni, somehow asking the same? What was with these two, asking things of him, and Zaid getting things wrong? With, Selin anyway; but Selin hadn't asked for it. Lokni was. Zaid stared at him. He couldn't fuck up with Lokni now.
"Mean...mean and honest. Mean and honest...." Zaid repeated, and the deer's little bleating was heartbreaking (reminding Zaid forcefully of the cries of -- no. Never mind that). A buzzing filled the air, which Zaid wasn't sure if it came from the fire or the sky. No matter - he had to focus on Lokni.
"Right. We need to get that rain going, or that poor little thing is going to die. Only you can save it, yeah? Too much pressure for you, is that what the hold up is? Might be you're not built to save anything, or anyone for that matter. If - if your horse was in trouble, you what. You'd just shrug and walk away? Yeah, I could see that, if I'm honest. You can't always rely on others to be your brains and tell you what to do, Lokni. Sometimes you've got to actually think for yourself, even if it's hard for you. You - you're a slow, thick-headed, self-pitying, useless little sod who don't know his tight arse from his donkey-brained head, yeah. Can't stick to the middle-of-the-road, forgettable, poor little unpopular Lokni, not this time. This isn't fucking high school anymore, so grow a bloody pair. False modesty innt a good look on you, mate. Save that fucking thing or piss off."
The timid prod of Zaid's slim fingers against Lokni's muscled bicep was barely a match for Zaid's sharp tongue. "....Yeah?"

--------------------
Most humans carry the night with them. Even during daylight hours, they can shut out the sun, turn off the light, recede into themselves and into that soft secret place behind their eyes.
Did you know certain animals don’t have eyelids? Gecko’s have nothing between them and the violent sun which wishes to cook the colors of their world. They have to use their tongue. Dust and sand and rain, can you imagine? I was obsessed with lizards as a kid.
I stacked up books on snakes and lizards and skinks. I traced the way that sand snakes crested across the dunes, sideways and wrong. I put glue on the pads of my hand and tried to climb the walls of my room— I didn’t even get one handhold up. I went to the zoo and peered into their cages, up on my tiptoes, trying not to smudge the glass or breath too hard. I tried make out their triangle heads and slow tongue-flicks, but they each shrank away deep into nooks and crannies of their cages. Most things do when I look at them.
Most humans carry the night with them, right there behind their eyelids is an entire world of darkness. I have something else inside me, not quite, not soft, not secret. They called me “headlights girl” in the newspapers.
There were even stranger kids born in the Age of Spirits. I checked. Every morning of fifth grade, I scanned the papers for mentions of “oddities” growing into anomalies.
A boy who could breath fire. A girl with leaves sprouting from her head. A kid with antennae that could taste the wind. There are stranger things than me in the age of beasts and magic. My father called it the “Epoch of Bastards,” sons and daughters of flickering fire elementals and wind ghosts who seduced half-asleep ladies from their beds.
He didn’t look at me much growing up. And I knew what he meant. I knew what he was getting at by calling it the Epoch of Bastards. Growing up, I played in my little puddle of carpet on the floor as he blustered in and out of rooms like gale force winds. He’d be looking for his keys or a left shoe or wallet since he was going out, out, out. I think I missed him at first, in the way you miss strangers you’ve never met.
Later, still on my puddle of carpet, still on my island, I would glare at him with that sour, acid taste in the back of my throat. Acrid, smoky, I would barely blink as he passed; he’d jump when he turned too quickly and accidentally fell into my path. Later still, I would begin to wish they were both like that—blustery and calling people names, gone more often than not.
It sometimes felt better than hearing my mom weep to herself on the couch. I wish she’d do it in her room or outside or anywhere else than that theatrical sobbing in the middle of the house, a naked heartbeat to the place. She spoke to her friends on the phone in that same watery voice, handkerchief in hand and sniffling, she spoke to them more than me.
What else am I supposed to do? This isn’t how it was supposed to be. She’d wail, just a bit, and then find a new thing to wail over. They could barely afford to send me to That School. They could barely afford the special doctor’s appointments for my eyes. They barely knew what to do with me.
Sometimes, I wanted to shout right back: It’s not like I didn’t want to be here either!
But she wasn’t talking to me.
School wasn’t much better. We weren’t the same, not really. None of us were the same age or had the same affliction. Plus, most everyone else stayed in dorms where they bonded with secrets and whispers and hiding from matrons. It wasn’t the same.
They called me The Lighthouse and Car Face and Nightlight. Sometimes they’d give me a few bucks to close my eyes so they could see my face. I did it. They’d laugh and reassure me I was as ugly as you’d think. Or beautiful. Or perfectly average-looking or I had a pig-nose or unibrow. I’d never seen anything but the blinding light of my own eyes in the mirror so I could never contradict them.
A boy with antlers handed me a twenty for a kiss in the 6th grade. I closed my eyes for that too. It was chapped and dry and he ran away with a screaming laugh afterward. There are stranger kids than me, I reminded myself. So why do I feel so much stranger than the rest of them?
I was 16 when I heel-toed my way down the stairs toward the front door. A duffel bag slung over my shoulder stuffed with loose clothes, change, a bath towel, three books with broken spines, all the tampons in the house, and a Swiss-army knife.
I hoped to stuff as many cheddar-cheese sandwiches in my sack as possible before the midnight bus came, but he was at the kitchen table. I don’t think either of us expected it, like running into your teacher at the mart and you’re both buying the same brand of toilet cleaner. There was a beer in front of his idle hands and he still wore his rumpled work shirt. He glanced at the bag on my shoulder for a long minute.
Finally, he sighed like I cut him off in traffic.
“Gimme a moment.”
My father leafed through a wad of cash he kept in a safe. He handed me almost three hundred bucks and we nodded at each other. At the time, I thought there was a kind of satisfaction to that nod, an endnote.
I was out the door before the midnight bus arrived.
Only three people were at the terminal. None of them looked at me with my pack and my knife stuffed in one hand and my eyes glowing. They did look at the glow, but not for long.
Remote and empty like maybe the world had ended and the last bits of if were nothing but strangers not making eye contact.
Finally, I watched the headlights of the midnight bus approach through dense summer night. I was struck by the thought that it was like looking at like, the glow of my eyes against its eyes. Can a bus be your father? Can your father be a man after all this time? Will your mother come looking for you?
I got on the bus and kicked my feet up against the seat in front of me. Scrunched into a ball, crossed my arms over my chest, and watched the trees turn into flickering bodies of shadow with each passing mile. ------------- My feet moved like tides. They tossed me against nameless city streets and toward empty forested slices of land. I stumbled into the painted deserts toward the west. I dipped my toes into the neon districts of the east with lights brighter than my own. I slept on benches and in kid’s treehouses and hunched my shoulders against brick walls of back alleys.
No one touched me. Maybe they’d approach now and then, but I’d open my eyes and they’d see nothing but heaven or devils or an absent lightning-God father that would smite them. I was the daughter of spirits after all.
I found my way to the ocean; beaches where other stragglers gathered and it was easy to stretch out on empty pieces of warm sand. I didn’t talk much by then, I didn’t like to; people stared whether I was speaking or screaming and clamping down on my jaw so hard it ached. Sometimes I get yelled at: Turn that off! No phone lights in here. You’re blinding me, bitch!
I’d never seen a movie in any theatres, but I could imagine what it’s like.
It was crowded, but I liked that ocean city, despite myself. It had pale buildings built into cliffs, narrow winding sidewalks where cars couldn’t fit, reckless bikers, and crushed seashell parking lots. I liked the tang of salt in the air and the way my hair crinkled from the ocean water as it sun-dried. I camp out on beaches and bummed cigarettes and hotdogs off strangers. I was good at taking care of myself once I got into a rhythm.
I had a tent by then and even an enormous sun umbrella to keep any prying eyes away. I still liked to sleep under the stars most nights though.
I often dreamed of sinking to the bottom of the ocean. I dreamed of descending on pointed ballerina-feet to the silted black bottom. I’d be weighted down through the cold and the silence to where no human being had ever been. I’d open my eyes there, open them all the way, lightning-bright, and unflinching. In my dreams, the salt didn’t even sting. I lit up the world, the whole untouched world of whales and fish and terror and maybe I’d do something good then. Maybe I’d do something good and bring the sun to places that had forgotten it.
I hated those dreams.
I met Mags on the beach after one of those dreams. Mags had one eye and twelve teeth and carried around nothing but string and scissors everywhere. She smelled like seawater and burning kelp, dank and crusted over. Her clothes were neat despite her leather-cracked skin and arms and neck covered in tattoos of shipwrecks. We ran into each other at some bum gathering and she cackled and pulled me aside.
“What’s your name?” Her voice was old creaking wood. I didn’t answer. “I could give you one.” She offered with a grin that was more empty space than anything.
“Nana.” I gritted out. “You want something?”
“Not sure. What do you want, kid?”
I glared openly, my beam of light slanting. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Come here.”
I didn’t know why I was chosen.
Mags liked me more than I deserved. I pocketed her last pair of socks when she wasn’t looking. She never mentioned it and dragged me down to the community showers to get clean with soap and shampoo. She took me to the soup and salad restaurant for something that wasn’t burnt or freeze-dried or from a convenience store. She cackled, she spat when she talked, people shot her looks as well.
I thought she was normal, not touched by the spirits, but she liked me more than most people and I didn’t know why.
“You like art, kid?”
I snorted. “No.”
“Why not? You broken?” Yeah. Probably.
“How am I supposed to know?” I snapped back.
“Lippy squirt. Come on, I’ll show you something worth your forked tongue.”
She heated the needle before she used it, red hot and untouchable. She dipped it into deep black inks, only black and sometimes red, she called them the only colors that matter. She shows me how to prick the skin and clean it. She showed me how to slowly, painstakingly etch images. I wasn’t sure I liked it, there was something so permanent and intentional about the act.
I watched her lessons though: stick and poke to her right foot, all over those fine little bones that must hurt, in and out, a little bloody.
It took her six hours to make a tiny shipwreck right above her big toe. It was a narrow schooner going under and I was the only witness. She made the waves come to life and crash against its sides and sometimes I forgot to blink. She didn’t seem to mind.
She washed another needle. She heated it red-hot. She dipped it in ink and handed it to me.
I still wasn’t sure I liked the permanence of it, but I told myself I was bored and it was something to do. I decided quickly I did like the bite of it, I liked the focus it took, and the ability to pull something from nothing.
I practiced all over my thighs first, there was enough meat there and it was easy enough to reach: a lizard design that looked like nothing but squiggles, a TV set playing static, a tiny smudged skink with its tongue out. I practiced designs in the sand and then on paper when Mags splurged on pen and paper.
Mags took me to the museum on Sundays. They were always free on Sundays.
Something stirred in my chest, even as the guards yelled at us about how flash photography wasn’t allowed in the museum. Even as I was shooed out of exhibits for ruining the paint. Still, an ache so old it rotted roared to life in my chest.
I stabbed in and out, gentle, a collection of stars right above my right knee. A winding sand snake on my wrist, and then finally, something good, something that gave people pause and reason to stare. I made it in the mirror: a ghost on my collarbone. Shadowed and intricate and yet simple, I put a ghost right above my collarbone and it bleeds more than any of the others.
That was a good year or so; one of the best I could remember.
I didn’t want to leave the ocean city though and Mags said she had to keep moving. She had places to be. She gave me a sloppy kiss on the cheek.
“You're a gem, kid. You’ll knock ‘em all to the pavement.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “You’ll be back?”
She cackled. “Wouldn’t miss it. You know me.” She winked as she turns to the bus, my second father. “You think I’ll miss your great becoming, kid? I’ll be back.”
I wanted to make her pinky-promise like I was a kid again begging one of the others to tell me if I’m beautiful when I close my eyes. I couldn’t do that; I waved as she tottered up the steps of the bus and was taken away with the tides of her own feet.
A had a moment of thinking it was the end then; I was ready to get back to my real normal. I was ready to disappear again. But even shipwrecks with no witnesses leave things left to be found.
------------ I got an apprenticeship. Technically, Mags talked them into it and I just followed up when I had nothing better to do.
I didn’t think I’d like it much, but couch surfing and camping out was the pastime of the especially young. And I’d lost my giant umbrella.
It was a small shop that smelled like bleach and dried flowers. A tattoo parlor in one of the steep arts districts neighbored by food trucks and beaded necklace shops.
Penguin Davies and Bitch-Annie ran it together. Davies walked like he’d never encountered land before, and Bitch-Annie had a throw-pillow embroidered with “If you don’t have anything nice to say then come sit next to me.”
Davies was covered in nothing but birds and dizzying M. C. Escher house-designs up and down his chest and arms. Bitch-Annie had topless mermaids and pinup girls across her shoulders and legs. She’d been asked to leave a number of stores before the children started staring or thinking thoughts.
Neither of them had ever met someone like me. It was not that type of town. I rankled at most their questions, a cat meeting a steel brush. Where are you from? What’s your family name? What kind of school did you go to? Is your sight better than other people you think?
I brushed off anything more personal than my favorite type of soda. Bitch-Annie called me “Shadow” probably as a joke, probably. Davies said I must be possessed by the ghost of some dead star: a blackhole that takes everything in and lets nothing out.
Neither of them let me touch a needle in those first six months. They had me practice on pig skin and trace designs and stand by their shoulders as they worked. I felt like a dental assistant except I was the hanging light shining into open mouths instead of anything with a pulse. I stood at their shoulder as they drew thick lines and thin dots and made hearts and wolves and names of dead lovers come to life.
They asked me to stand still and stop wiggling the light. I almost walked out several to find a new cliff to crash against, almost.
No one had ever expected anything of me before. They never expected me to show up somewhere or do something well. No one really cared if I went to school or if I did my homework, if I dressed well or went to bed on time. And no one kept any tabs on me at all after I took that first bus. That’s how I liked it.
I should’ve left, tattooing didn’t mean anything to me, not really. But Bitch-Annie stomped up to my attic-apartment one morning and threw pants at me.
“Get up, Shadow,” she barked. She was sterner than Mags, no hint of humor in her eyes. “I told you 9am so I expect 9am.”
“The fuck!?” I was eloquent in the mornings.
“Pants, shirt, shoes, and bra if you don’t want that desk idiot staring at something other than your eyes all day.”
“Are you serious?”
“Serious as a root canal. Mags swore up and down about what you. Let’s see some of that, up, up!”
I grumbled. I put on everything but the bra. No one ever expected me to be anywhere before and 9am shouldn’t have even been a concept much less a real thing. I told myself I hated it. I’d leave the next week. Or maybe the week after that or in just one more month. I kept a bus ticket under my pillow but every time the date arrived I shrugged and made myself busy.
There’d be no harm in having a savings too and seeing what all the fuss was about with having a dishwasher and a kitchen.
I wasn’t an artist of course. I didn’t understand what everyone else was seeing when they looked at the “old masters” paintings of water or war or lovers pulled apart. I didn’t feel anything in front of stain-glass windows in churches or mosaics on walls. Maybe there really was something wrong with me, my eyes. I didn’t let up though. I put on pants for it after all.
Penguin Davies hovered by my shoulder when I made my first real design.
“Mm.” He rumbled deep in his chest. He’d gone grey at an early age, had tired eyes and quick hands. The desk kid said he’d been in medical school once, a surgeon. It was hard to tell. Davies muttered a lot, stared off into space too much, and laughed like it was always a painful surprise
“Perfectionist,” he muttered at me as I start over on a crappy unicorn design. “That line was barely off. You’re being a perfectionist, Nana.”
I scowled over my shoulder and let the full weight of my light hit him across the face. “Got a problem with it?” I challenged. He chuckled darkly. His grin was crooked like a broken door handle. I tried to hide my work from him with my shoulder. “It’s not done yet.”
“It’s late.” The rest of the street was dark. I knew that.
“I said I’m not done yet! You can go home.”
“Hmm.” He scratched his grey beard.
“What?”
“Look at you. You know who makes the best artists, Nana?” He was always a bit of a philosopher. Maybe he used to study that before medicine.
“Yeah, yeah, shut up. I’m working on it.”
He gave my shoulder a light push. “The ones that don’t quit.”
They let me touch a needle gun after that. I told myself I’d only sign my new apartment lease as an experiment. I didn’t have to actually stay. I’d just run from the ink on paper and hope no one chased after girls with eyes that glow.
I didn’t break my lease. I drew suns and moons, trees and fireflies, hunks in speedos on tipsy college girls who swore they were sober and erotic vampires on the chests of men getting their first divorce. I had to give two refunds for a duck that turned out lopsided and a tattoo of someone’s dog which I swore really was that ugly to begin with.
There was one at the end of that next year though, another college girl with perfectly white piano-key teeth. She asked for a stick and poke, that was what I was best at anyway, she asked for a butterfly. Butterflies were easy, I could do the little ones in my sleep. She wanted one all across her back, she said I could make it look however I wanted. So I did. Wings like fringed shawls and straight heavy lines combined with wispy swirling ones. It was dark, black ink with red highlights and gray shadows under each wing to give it movement and flight.
I hid my smile when I finished and showed her the results in the mirror. She went to my bosses and jumped up and down. She pointed and babbled, ohmyspirits, the best thing I’ve ever seen! Fuck. I should pay you double! Where did you get this girl?
I held myself perfectly still and studied the ceiling until my eyes dried out.
I took the long way home that night. I stopped once, at the corner where the midnight bus arrived, and watched the the passengers trudge off. I didn’t expect to see Mags again so soon, not really, but sometimes I wanted to show her: Hey, maybe your work wasn’t all wasted. Maybe I did start to become.
---------------- “I’m getting you chocolate.” Annie spat, her thick arms flexing as she cleaned off the spotless counter. “I’m getting you fucking chocolate, Shadow, ‘less you tell me what flavor you actually like.”
I hung at the back of the shop next to the narrow window that faced the road. I let the sun warm my face in thick strips and watched the bicycles pass. “It’s not my birthday.”
“Tell us what your actual birthday is then, you sugar-toasted tart.”
I shrugged. “Not today.”
“Well happy fucking birthday. You’re turning two. You came to work for us two years ago today, washed up from the beach like a deranged feral cat, so this is your birthday now.”
I rolled my eyes which served to look like a flashlight given a shake. Annie spent another minute splashing disinfectant on anything that might have had even a passing conversation with a germ.
“You talk to Birdie?” She asked, but mischievously this time. I responded by setting my mouth in a hard line. “You’re turning twenty-something and you’re not even talking to Birdie, are ya?”
“I’m not telling you what I’m turning. It’s still not my birthday.” I dodged inelegantly.
“Birdie will give you a proper go-around. Even shadows like you must need a little rub now and then.”
“Go dunk your head, Annie.” I huffed.
“Afraid you’ll blind her in bed?”
I turned with a snarl. “I’ll start with you.”
“I’ve seen you flipping through those poetry books, every word about hands or mouths or rosebuds.” She gave me flat a once-over. “You’ve got a sweet tooth in you.”
I dragged myself over to the desk to snarl at her some more, but Annie was already putting her hand up and going toward the backroom.
“I’m getting you a chocolate cake either way.”
There must have been a proper way to get her to never look at my little leather poetry books again, the ones with watermarked pages, the spines broken-in, and words that oozed. No one had to know that I could read, much less that I read that.
The door dinged instead.
“Excuse me.” She walked in. Her. “Is someone, um, named Nana here?” I turned before I could stop myself. That was still my name. And it was still my work.
Twenty-something, curtains of straight black hair falling in her face, pinched nose, thin energetic lips, shorts that gave way to milk-dipped legs that never seemed to end. A slight girl in a university t-shirt. College kids came in often during their breaks, but this one was a bit different. My eyes dragged up and fish-hooked there.
Feathered tendrils sprouted from her head and reached toward the ceiling. Long and searching, a pearly green color that reminded you of leaves or plumage.
I knew within a moment where I’d heard of this: Antennae Girl. The newspapers ran our stories close together along with the boy that breathed fire and the girl with roots growing from her head. We were all born in the same year during the epoch of monsters and bastards.
I think she recognized me too.
We stopped like heartbeats seizing up before the ambulance could make it. A confused, unnatural silence. I glanced at the door and considered making a run for it.
She cleared her throat first.
“Someone said that Misty’s butterfly tattoo came from here?” She blinked once and I noticed how her feathered antennae seemed to twitch. I averted my eyes so I wouldn’t blind her. She took a step forward. “So are you . . . Nana?”
The door was right there.
“What do you want?” I had been spending too much time with Bitch-Annie.
“A tattoo?”
“What kind?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“Then why are you here?” I grunted. Footsteps came in from the back room. I was examining the smudged off-white tiles of the floor one by one.
“I wanted to . . . hey, you can look up if you want.” She said, curiously, softly. I didn’t look up. “I’m still figuring out the design.” She trudged on ahead.
“Fine.” I pivoted away. “But we’re busy. Come back later.”
A hand slapped across my shoulder. “This is Nana.” Annie stopped me from leaving. “Don’t let her eyes fool ya, it’s her personality that’s actually the problem. You saw her butterfly you said?”
“Yes!” She gushed. “It was gorgeous.”
“It was fine,” I corrected.
“It’s her birthday today.” Annie shared because she could and because she was a failed evil villain still trying to get her kicks in.
“Oh cool, happy Birthday.” A deep pause followed that could fill oceans. “You can look up. I don’t mind.” She repeated.
I opened my eyes wide and lifted my chin in one jerky motion. A beam of fluorescent headlights hit her across the face. “Is this what you want?” Venom dripped from my lips. This was why I tried not to talk too much.
The young woman squinted for a moment before covering her eyes and nodding. “I read about you,” she stated as if it was nothing. “I’m turning twenty-two this year . . . so I guess, you are too?”
“What?!” Delight filled Annie’s entire expression. “Hot damn! Twenty-two?” I groaned deeply. “Hey, you, girlie,” she addressed antennae-girl, “you want to come out for drinks tonight?”
I tried to protest as quickly as possible, but somehow didn’t summon the words quickly enough.
“Sure.” She agreed. ----------------------
The night was humid and clung to us like a second skin. I wandered through the hilly streets with Penguin Davies wobbling beside me. The desk kid—Daft Jeff, said Davies had some inner-ear problem that made it hard for him to keep his balance. Annie said he just didn’t belong on land— he couldn’t walk straight unless something was tilting and rolling under his feet.
Davies made his way up the hill, faltering and missing the musical beats of it. He refused to let me steady him and I refused to have him sing to me. It was apparently my birthday.
“Someone saw your design.” He noted on the downhill.
“Yeah. Some college girl.” I grumbled.
“What’d you think?” He asked in his usual mysterious way.
“She just wants a good look.” I returned in a neutral tone. “She read about me in the paper. All she wants to do is look.”
“She saw your design.” He paused. “And Jeff said she was like you.”
I blinked hard so the path ahead was eaten by shadow and Davies stumbled. “Not all of us have to be friends . . .” I said sourly and didn’t fill in the rest. “I’ve met kids with antlers and frog-hands before. I doesn’t mean anything.”
“Any of them come visit?”
“They’re smart enough not to.” I snark. “But the ones who manage to be pretty don’t have the brains to stay away.”
“Mm.” He made a soft sound. “What kind of tattoo do you think she’ll get?”
“How should I know? A heart or anchor or something dumb like that.” I walked on ahead. “Maybe I’ll give her a quote from some dead poet.”
“You like poetry.”
I huff dramatically, “Not what I mean. Girls like her don’t like my type of poetry, you know I’m saying.”
“What kind of girls?” Davies was patient. I hated that about him.
I stopped at the corner to let him catch up. “Don’t play dumb. Hot ones, college ones, getting a degree in money or music. They don’t watch over their shoulders enough or know when to stay away.” I scuffed my shoe on the ground. “Whatever.”
Davies was still thinking. I considered pushing him over. He finally spoke up again as we approach the bar, “That sea witch ever show up again?”
“Mags?” I snorted. “No. Why?”
“Cause I’m sure she’d like to see this.”
I didn’t say anything else as we reached the doorway. -------------------- The bar was loud. More people than I liked came to my “party.” I should have seen it coming. If the cliff city liked one thing it was an excuse to drink.
I crammed myself up against the bar and ordered a gin and tonic before the rest of the night crowd could arrive. Birdy was holding court at a corner table and waving at me. “There she is! Someone put a blanket over Nana, lights out, party up!”
Her puns usually left something to be desired. She sang “Blinded by the Light” every time she saw me for half a year.
I drank half my gin and tonic in the first gulp as a new stream of townies burst in. They arrived to buy me birthday beers and shout their opinions on the shitty new chain restaurant on 3rd street. I was almost tasting the bottom of my second glass when someone tapped on my shoulder.
I barely looked over.
The girl with sheets of black hair and a practiced-appearance stood before me—like she was at dress rehearsal and expected everyone else to know the lines as well. She carried a baby-blue bike helmet in one hand, and I noted there were two hand-drilled holes in the top.
“You.” I was tempted to shake her hand like I might make this a transactional hello and goodbye in short order.
“Hey.” She smiled, hesitant, like maybe the food on the fork might be too hot. “Nana, right?”
“Yep.” I sighed the word real long and heavy. “Listen, I really can’t give you a tattoo if you don’t know what you want.”
“No, no, I get it. But I want you to know . . . I didn’t know it was you.”
“Uh, okay. Though I’m pretty hard to miss over here.” I was looking at the dirty wine bottles stacked near the ceiling. Her antennae hang over both of us like fern fronds.
“No. I mean, when I saw the butterfly. That’s when I wanted to come here. Not after.”
“After what?” I was gonna make her say it.
“After I found that it was, well, you know, Headlights Girl.”
“Mm.” I was spending too much time with Davies. “You want something to drink?”
She sighed as well, real long and heavy. “Sure.” She took the seat next to me. “I’m Park by the way.”
“Park.” I rolled the name around in my mouth. “And you already know me.”
“I don’t think I do.” She laughed, sharp and bristly like something you can get cut on. “And I’ll have a beer. . . but only once you look up. Come on, I’m not like that.” I looked up. Her face was bright, round like the moon, her grin was sneaky and unearned. “There we go.”
She waved over the bartender Kipp and ordered her dark beer.
“It’s not really my birthday.” I informed her, dumbly. Every word felt dumb and clumsy all at once.
“Why not?” She was teasing. I knew that.
“That’s not how birthdays work.” I informed and wished I could backtrack into hostility again.
“Oh darn,” she winked. “And here I was about to make it my birthday too.”
“Uh, well,” I really should have left when I had the chance. “It’s not too late?”
“That’s the spirit!” She laughed, fuller this time and rounded. I looked her straight in the face and then quickly looked away again. Her grin was aimed at me, somehow, and seemed to reach high cupboards inside me you usually needed a stool for.
“Park,” I repeated the name and shifted in place. “So did you go to Haveryards or Simmons?” There were only two schools in the country for spirit bastards like us. Haveryards was close enough for me to get bussed to—an hour one way and then an hour home.
“Neither. I went to public and then Bakerville Uni.” She rapped on the counter. “Hey, you want another gin and tonic? Or I’ll mix you up something.” Her eyes flickered over everything. “I bartended my way through college so I can make a mean margarita.”
“Oh, Bakerville U., yeah. That ones close.” I stuttered a bit. She was leaning across the counter and trying to get Kipp’s attention a second time. My words were feeling dumber and dumber by the moment, perhaps losing all shape and meaning altogether. “That’s where you went?”
“How’d you guess?” She said playfully and pointed to her t-shirt. She finally got the bartender over. “Right, you want something hard? Vodka maybe? A mule?”
I scratched my chin. “ . . . I don’t care. I’m easy.”
She rolled her eyes and I knew she must feel me staring. “I can’t imagine shopping for you for today then.” She snickered and climbed over the counter. “Happy birthday, how about one chocolate mule for a free tattoo?”
“You wish.” I made a face. “You don’t even know what you want.”
“And you do?” She was still grinning, somehow. “I’ve decided I’m making you the equivalent of all the soda flavors mixed together at once. Close your eyes.”
I closed my eyes and I tried to turn off my thoughts. It was bright as knives inside my skull; I carry the daytime with me. Panic threatened to rise up (for no reason of course), but a soft hand brushed against mine, soft like sheets in fancy hotels and flower petals. I peaked and Park slid a full murky glass toward me.
“Drink up.”
It was sweet. It wasn’t even my birthday. I didn’t care. She called it a chocolate-mule-Park Special and maybe chocolate really was my favorite flavor. -------------- Park started coming around. She rode a sky-blue bike with a white basket and rusting hinges. I couldn’t imagine doing all the hills in the city without any gears, but she managed. She said she was figuring things out after graduating. She said she liked it here.
I grumbled when she came by. I complained like Annie when Wicker the cat visited: Get that thing away from me. I hate that. Smells awful. I’ve got allergies. Put that away, it’ll kill me.
I never said anything when Annie left fish heads out and bowls of milk of course.
Park smelled like sunscreen and breath mints. She had strong opinions on everything from street paving techniques to which sun hats went with which dresses. She invited me on walks. She invited me to help her change a flat tire. She invited me to the corner shop to help her pick out bottle can openers.
I said no. Sometimes I said no. I started to say yes.
“Look at this,” she liked to show me things. She liked to show me pictures of squirrels on her phone and weird pieces of glass she found. She liked to point out new restaurants (that I’d already been to) and play videos of funny traffic jams.
This time she held up a seashell. It was rounded and flat with a swirl in the center.
“I’m looking.” I said carefully.
“Watch how it catches light.” I shun my eyes on it and she moved it back and forth. There were bits of silver veins caught in the cracks of it.
“There’s tons of those.” At this point, I had valiantly refused to be impressed by even her cutest squirrel pictures.
“Ugh.” She pouted. “Are you kidding? I spent all morning looking for this.”
“They're right by the surf. I could find you five bigger ones than this before sunset.”
“Alright, hot-shot.” She jut her chin out and jabbed my shoulder. “Prove it.”
I said yes to that one. I left right after my shift ended with the sun setting in the waters like a stabbed orange bleeding out. I met Park by the parking lot with drooping palms trees lining the sides and lost flipflops everywhere.
“This is where you went wrong.” I announced. I couldn’t help it. “This is the tourist beach. You have to go somewhere real.”
“Alright, alright. You’ve already established you’re the hot-shot here. Lead the way.”
She followed me. I ignored how she lingered by my side. I ignored how her hand wrapped around my arm as she stopped us to look at a tiny horseshoe crab. Her hand was soft, like velvet, soft enough to smother something in my chest.
I found two seashells with streaks of silver and rainbow through them, both bigger than my palm. The sun was a flat line on the horizon before I could find a third and Park hooted.
“You said before sunset! It’s sunset, baby, pay up.” She called. “And you were so sure you were a better seashell hunter than me.” She tsked.
I scanned the ground more quickly. “It’s barely nighttime.” I pointed to the sky. “And I can keep looking. I have the built-in equipment for it.”
“Oh I know.” She planted herself on the soggy crusted sand and sat down in a heap. “But can you find why kids love the taste of not doing that? Take it easy. Take a seat.”
“So pushy.”
“You know me.” It was fond. It had only been a few months, but there was something fond there.
I ran a hand through my short choppy curls. “Fine.” I sat next to her, not too close. “It’s your loss.” We both looked out at the gently lapping waves, foaming and anemic. She let a long breath of air and for a moment I considered brushing her hair back. It was always in her face.
It was a quiet moment, bottled, and pitching toward something. Like the the moment where you miss a step on the stairs and the certainty of the fall was right there.
I was the one that scooted a little closer.
“I’m considering getting a storm cloud,” she commented off-handedly. “Can you do storm clouds?”
I made a sound of consideration. “Sure.” I glanced toward the opposite corner of the night sky. “I think I’ve seen one of those before. Big puffy wet things?”
“Kinda fluffy? You’re getting there.”
“I’ll see what I can do.” I’m smiling, which is alright since there’s no way she could see it. She’s silent for another moment longer.
“Or would you make fun of me if I got something like a butterfly? Like your other one.”
“A storm cloud butterfly?”
“No. The cloud would it’s own thing.” She chewed on her bottom lip, ragged and chapped. “I mean, I’ve been doodling some ideas. And tattoos should be personal, right? So I thought a storm cloud might be fitting. Kids used to pay me a couple dollars to predict the weather. It could be a memorial to childhood entrepreneurial spirit.”
I watched her speak and something beat inside my chest like a second animal. I wanted to be closer. I wanted to feel velvet again.
“Why?” I rasped after a moment.
“Uh, why did they pay me? It’s just something I can do. Whenever it's going to rain or storm or be sunny out. I dunno, I don’t know why the rest of you can’t sense it.”
“And you didn’t become a meteorologist?” I smiled a bit bitterly.
She made an indignant noise. “And you didn’t become a professional lighthouse?”
I choked on a laugh. “Not yet.” A quiet consumed us from both sides, I made sure my light didn’t crash into her. I made sure to look at anything but her. She’d have to squint if I did and cover her eyes and I’d be there, ready to run her over.
“Kids in my class paid me too.” I barely realized I started speaking. “They slipped me a couple bucks to close my eyes so they could see my face.”
“You got money for that?”
“There wasn’t always much to do. Teachers were quitting all the time and sometimes it was just the TV. I dunno, they paid me. Then they’d giggle and run away afterward.” My voice sounded automated like the announcer at an airport, informing travelers their flight was canceled. “They always said I had a pig nose or a unibrow or looked like the lead singer of that Minx girl band-- super hot, but you know, it didn’t matter.” The laugh that escaped was high, girlish in a grotesque way. “Since, you know, no one would ever see it.”
“Kids are fucked up.” Park contributed simply.
“Adults are too.” I sniffed. “Everyone wants a light show.”
“Oh.” She said slowly. “Is it . . . is it bad I wanted to meet you then? I mean, I wanted to see the art first, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a factor.”
“No.” I said quickly. I lit up my own lap and empty hands. “Does it matter?”
“I never went to those schools,” she said hesitantly. “My parents fought them, said the schools were unfit. They shouldn’t be able to force us there. And that I wasn’t even dangerous since,” she gestured helplessly upward, “I just have these. So then, well, I never really met anyone else like me.”
“I mean, everyone’s different. It’s not . . . a big deal.”
“You’d think so,” she commented sardonically.
I folded up into myself like a complex origami piece. “Yeah, well, sometimes I wish I was dangerous. Actually dangerous.”
She giggled. “Didn’t you just say everyone’s different? I’d say everyone’s dangerous too. Just gotta find the niche.”
“Oh yeah,” I dared to turn toward her. “What’s yours then?”
“My danger niche? Hmm.” She was leaning now, pitching forward like a wave come to drown me. “I do have a few tricks up my sleeve I’ll admit.”
“You have a pair of wings hidden away?” I stopped breathing as her hand lifted up, strange and all at once. I wasn’t ready.
“Here.” Her skin was against mine. She cupped my cheek with one velvet-hand. It was heated cashmere, tiny feather-light hairs on her palm. “Feelers.” She whispered with a hesitancy there.
“Ah,” I was indulgent. I closed my eyes. I leaned in. “And you want to put a needle over these?” I put my hand over hers, loosely, so she could pull away if she wanted to. Tiny hairs pulsed there with some kind of life all their own.
“I wanted . . .” She paused and I peaked open my eyes. I could see every detail of her face, illuminated. “I dunno.” She finished. “I guess I just wanted whatever I saw there, before.”
“In the butterfly?”
“In the butterfly.” I turned toward the ocean, but my hand remained over hers. “I’m not sure how good it will be a second time. It’s not like I’m really an artist. . .”
“What did you want to be?” Soft.
“Who knows. I mean, I’m glad my parents didn’t try to fight the schools. Being there during the day was better than being home, listening to my mom crying all the time and my father exploding . . . They wouldn’t have wanted me home.”
Before the sunset, when I was walking over, I thought maybe we’d kiss that night. I thought I’d feel that first electric pulse and maybe we’d climb into the ocean and swim in circles, laugh until the moon rose. I thought maybe I’d get something out of my system and there wouldn’t be anything left to say or do.
I’d kiss Park, once, and she’d be satisfied. She’d understand. She’d go on her college path and I’d go on on mine.
But the words spilled out, unbidden. Park stayed in place, steady and unflinching. That made it worse, so much worse.
“My parents weren’t like yours.” There was an accusatory edge to it. Don’t you know? I wanted to shout. Don’t you know? Even without the eyes or the school bills or the bus.
“Hey,” she cradled my cheeks with both hands now and smeared the tears away from one eye. “Hey, listen, I know. Alright? I know.”
I scowled back at her feathered little feelers.
“It’s not about the damn antenna or head beams or anything else.” I tried to pull away. “Even the kid with the antler’s kissed me and I didn’t stop him. I ran away from home and my mom never came looking. It didn’t matter. It doesn’t matter! You wouldn’t even get it. You wouldn’t get it!” I squeeze my eyes closed. “You were wanted.”
Slowly, like an awkward animal burrowing into soft earth, she pressed her forehead to the crook of my neck. I could feel us both breathing in, strong and steady. She was lean and silky, and I swore I can feel her heartbeat hammering through my throat.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered. I inhaled her sunscreen scent. “I shouldn’t have said that. I don’t know. But I could.”
“Why are you here?” It was miserable and wet, I hated that my eyes were so different and yet still the same. Could still spill over like theirs. She took a long breath but didn’t move away.
“My last girlfriend broke up with me for being . . . sensitive and I thought maybe if I got a tattoo, I’d stop feeling so much. I’d prove something. I’d feel everything less, you know? It would hurt and then it wouldn’t.”
I took that in a parsec at time. “Are you,” I sniffed. “Are you alright?” Her legs and arms were plastered over mine. “You’re so soft, but, but I don’t want to,” I wipe at my face like it didn’t matter. “Hurt you.”
“I know.” Her face was still pressed to my neck and her lips fluttered across the hallow of my skin. “I didn’t want to hurt you either.”
A stillness settled into my bones. I glanced toward the moon, and it was like looking at like, a terrible moon to another moon. I gathered myself. I took a deep breath. I flattened.
“I shouldn’t have said all that.” My voice had dried up. “We led different lives.” It wasn’t her fault if she was wanted.
“No.”
“I wasn’t thinking . . .”
Her hand wrapped around my wrist. “I talk to Annie sometimes when you aren’t there.”
“Okay?”
“And Davies. And that front desk guy.”
“Daft Jeff. Yes.”
“They all say the same thing . . .” I blinked a couple times. “That I really should wait for you to give me the tattoo. You have a steady hand and an eye for detail.”
“Alright . . .”
“That someone taught you tattooing the right way. They wanted to show you the right way to do it.”
I snorted despite myself. “It’s not that hard. Mags was batty. Who knows why she showed me how to pick up a needle.”
“Don’t you see? They say they wouldn’t know what to do without you.” She was still there. She wasn’t moving, almost in my lap now. “You were wanted.”
“Park?” My voice cracked like a question.
“And you come with me to restaurants and help me buy bottle openers. You find shells for me and help me fix tires.” Her breath was hot and dragged across my cheek. “You are wanted.”
I blocked out her face, her voice, I turned on the sharp white sun inside and for a moment I imagine never opening my eyes back up again. Maybe I could make it night forever inside myself as well. Wouldn’t you rather have something quiet inside?
She wrapped herself around me, fully, one long arm at a time until it was cocoon. Soft. “Listen, sometimes the first people aren’t the right people. Sometimes your first relationship isn’t the right relationship. Sometimes you’re sure the world is one way, and like, always one way . . . and then it rains and the whole world is different again. You know? People pass.”
“My parents aren’t the weather.”
“But they’ll pass.” I should have pushed her off. But even against that, even those words— I liked being held, indulgent as chocolate and twice as guilty. “People sometimes feel forever, especially those kinds of people.” I was off again. “But it rains. And hey, I always know when it’s going to rain.”
I hiccupped; a smile found its way uninvited onto my face, unsure and just wobbly on its feet as Davies. I glanced down after a deep breath. Park grinned back at me and it reached the highest shelves of me all over again.
“So what happens when it rains again? Do you people like you pass?”
“Nah, not me. I don’t know how.” She winked. I didn’t notice that we’re lying flat now, stars and carpet of black above. “You can’t get rid of me. You haven’t given me that tattoo yet.”
The sound of shushing waves filled the midnight air and the moon looked down like that very first bus arriving to get me all those years ago. I wrapped my arms right back around her. She didn’t seem to mind that I was sticky or strange or sometimes kept tearing up all over again even after we’d stop saying anything worth tearing up over. ------------------
It happened. I felt like I should have been more prepared, brought flowers or poetry or earned it through honored warfare. But it happened. I was wearing ripped jeans, a spotty t-shirt and my breath smelled like coffee. We were looking for Park’s lost earring along an overgrown hill she usually biked along.
I found it, one shiny red dewdrop in all that green. Park pointed at some clouds that looked like my last “abstract” tattoo. We lay back in the grass and let the sky pass overhead. She giggled and touched my wrist, side by side. I let her.
“Summer’s almost over.” I mumbled it first.
“Yeah?”
“You find your next step then, college girl?” I tried to keep my tone light. She turned to be on her side.
“Maybe.”
“What do you want to do?”
“Oh, you know. This and that.”
“That does not sound like a college-girl plan.”
“Maybe I’ve got other plans. Maybe I’ve got other priorities, huh?”
“Ridiculous.” A playfully push her shoulder. “A lousy seaside town really isn’t priority material. There’s only one bookshop you know.”
“Two thank you very much. And that’s not my priority either.” Her voice wavered.
“Are you going to share with the class?”
“Is the class ready?” She whispered and I turned toward her as well now, taking in her perfect round face and question-mark mouth.
“I have been.” I matched her whisper. I tremor from my center outward and hopes she can’t tell.
“Do you know what they say about moths?”
“What?” I gave a breathy laugh. It wasn’t what I was expecting. “I’ve heard of them.”
“They tell your fortune.” She was grinning in that way that put out a stool and reached up. “I used to cry a lot growing up, because some kids said that moths are just evil butterflies. I was sensitive and ran all the way home. I threw myself at my mom’s feet and threw a fit about how moths were just evil butterflies. They were just ugly, wicked versions of a good thing.”
“Evil? Well, I suppose you are rather sinister when you haven’t eaten.”
“Shut up. I’m telling you something.” She put a hand on my shoulder. I inhaled deeply and turned over in place to face her. Only the shallow breeze kept us apart.
“I’m all ears . . . though maybe not as many as you.”
“You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“What can I say? The sun is adorable. I take after him.”
A finger ghosted over my cheek, tracing the arc of my cheekbone. “Well, you’re not so bad behind those headlights too. Some of us have good day vision you know. And good taste.”
I wished those words didn’t make my chest do funny things. “Thanks.”
“Do you want to hear what my mom said or not?”
“That you shouldn’t worry about evil butterflies?” I wiggled closer. “Because you’ll be really hot and funny and smart one day. So who cares if you’re evil?”
“Yeah, those were her exact words.”
“So?”
“So,” a firm hand took my chin. “Look at me.” I looked at her. I was glad she couldn’t see the flush in my cheeks in any way. “Moths show good fortunes she said.”
“Right. Lots and lots of good fortune.” I breathed, dumbly, of course. She was close and sweet and there was hair in her face. The fronds of her antennae tickle right past my ear.
“They can help you find good fortune. They’re good omens. You know why?” Park’s lips were barely moving as she spoke, hypnotic and unhurried.
“Why?”
“Because they follow the light.”
It happened all at once. Like every cheesy love poem or bad lyrics I wrote in my journals at night. It was every cracked-spine of a book using words like “rosebud lips” and every overdone song about people who find their way to each other.
I kissed her, leaning in with no life vest on or readied crash-landing position. She kissed me and my chest filled with her, breathless, drowning, soft as dreams and stranger than hope. I cradled her and she dragged me closer and closer until it was nothing but floods and brimming.
I’d been nothing before I think, I’d been an island that waits, a bus that leaves, a shadow that hides. And then I had been hers. ----------------- I was strolling home from work along the main road. The thin strip of sidewalk was streaked with bleached sunlight and the salt air was thick enough to burn throats. It was the long way home, but I was in the habit of going back to this corner.
The bus pulled up with little ceremony. It was an interstate one that crisscrossed over empty bellies of land. I stopped in place to watch, just in case, as I had many times before.
A silver head bobbed down the steps and planted herself on the concrete, unbelieving. She took an enormous noisy sniff of the air. “Not so bad!” She bellowed.
“Are you?” That wasn’t meant to be my first word. She was more stooped now and wearing shiny things on her wrist that clanked. She’d lost another tooth. “Mags.”
“Eh!” She yelled and waved frantically as if I hadn’t shot up another inch since I last saw her and started wearing clothes without holes in them. Her eyes sparkled as she tottered over. “So how’d you do, kid?”
“See for yourself.” I smiled. It was nice when the tides came back in. Mags gave me a thorough appraising. “Like this I guess.” I held up my hand. I wiggled my ring finger at her, heavy with a silver band and glittering opal.
“That’s my girl! Always knew you’d find your feet.” She cackled. “Am I too late to give you away, kid?”
I shook my head. She waddled over to me so I could take her hand. I took her home to show her my art and new tattoos, I showed her our terrible one-eyed kitten, Basket (Wicker’s son), and the little house we styled ourselves. I showed her our shoe closet and our queen bed, our messy kitchen and busted screen door. I showed her the moth tattoo over my heart, and Park showed her the matching lighthouse one over hers.
I tried to thank her, of course, I tried to say I owed her more than she knew for picking up an angry, dirty kid and seeing something in her. I owed her everything. But she just patted my hand and said that it’s not about our debts in life, kid. It’s about the becoming.

⚘ A/n: UmM. I have a hate/love relationship with this fic. Didn't know how to end it.. :/
᠃ ⚘᠂ ⚘ ˚ ⚘ ᠂ ⚘ ᠃
“Y/n, leave.”
“No Shou-”
“Y/n, I don’t need you to solve my problems. I can live without you, and I will deal with myself, myself. Stop being a whiny little brat and go.”
Shouto has these days.
He’ll come home from work, extremely on-edge, and push you away for the rest of the night.
He doesn’t even sleep in the bed, he stays on the couch.
And it breaks your heart, every, single, time.
Whenever you come home in an off mood, Shouto will sit you down, he’ll make some tea, and you’ll chat by the fireplace. He’ll let you just stare off into the flames while you list your problems one, by one. If you need it he’ll draw you into a hug, and whisper sweet nothings into your ear, while you sob into his shoulder.
But the problem with Shouto, was that he wasn’t you. He dealt with all his problems on his own, he closed himself off from everyone when he needed a shoulder to cry on. He closed himself off to you. And you were afraid he didn’t trust you, that maybe he never would.
So, as Shouto stomped into your room, and motioned for you to leave so he could have a minute, you decided it was time to put an end to this.
“Shouto, do you.. do you wanna come sit by the fire with me?”
He shot you a look as he loosened his tie and unbuttoned his dress shirt.
“The fire that I’ll have to start? I’ve had a long day love, why don’t you go work on dinner”
“But Shouto..”
You fidgeted with you hands, nervously, leaning your weight on one foot, then the other.
“You know you can talk to me right?”
“You know now is not the time for this, right?”
He moved to the bed to start slipping his shoes off.
“I’m serious, I can’t do this anymore.”
“Neither can I, that’s why you should go.”
“Stop! Stop pushing me out, I want to be there for you! Just let me be your S/o and for once in your life talk to me!” You could hear your voice crack and you desperately tried to hold back your tears.
Shouto gave you and cold look and nodded his head.
“Your raising your voice love, why don’t you go make dinner.”
“This is exactly what I’m talking about! I love you! Don’t you trust me?”
You mentally cursed at yourself as tears began to spill out of your eyes,
“When I come home you always make me talk to you, I don’t get a choice. You need to talk too! To be taken care of!”
“I’m sorry your the weaker one in this relationship.”
“Shouto! being able to bottle up your emotions is not a strength!”
“Being a clingy little leech who can’t go two seconds without suffocating someone isn’t a strength.”
“Shouto just talk to me.”
“Y/n, leave.”
“No Shout-”
“Y/n, I don’t need you to solve my problems. I can live without you, and I will deal with myself, myself. Stop being a whiny little brat and go.”
You sniffled a bit, and grabbed a fresh change of clothes.
“If that’s how you really feel, then I’ll go.”
You dragged yourself to the kitchen, reaching to grab the car keys. Unzipping your purse you dug around for your phone and wallet, just to double check.
“I’m ordering you some cold soba, then i’m going out!”
You ordered the soba and left, tears blurring your vision as you drove to the nearest hotel.
He really didn’t trust you.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
When Shouto groggily rubbed at his eyes, and rolled of the couch, he expected you to hear the noise and wake up.
He put his bowl from the night before in the sink, for you to scrub along with your own. But there were no other bowls there.
He couldn’t remember much from the previous night, but he assumed you hadn’t eaten, and where probably hungry. So, he made you some waffles.
He hummed a tune as he whipped up the batter, waffles always made you feel better.
He decided to tie on his ‘kiss the cook’ apron, witch you had given him for his last birthday, to make you smile, and tip-toed over to the room. He opened the door, careful to keep it from making a clicking sound.
“Rise and shin-”
He set the tray of food down when you weren’t in your bed.
“Y/n?”
He combed through the house, struggling to find you.
“Hey Siri. Where’s Y/n?”
“Y/n, is at a hotel ten miles from here. Would you like directions?”
Oh...
OH..
He tried to call you a few times, but they all went to voice mail. He remembered all the things he had said last night, about being a suffocating leech, about being a whiny little brat.
Thank God for Siri.
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You sniffled, burying your face further into the stuffy you had bought at a gas stop last night. You hadn’t been able to sleep a wink.
You where startled out of your thoughts by a man outside your door.
“Ma’am, there’s a pro-hero here to see you. We have to let him in, there may be vital evidence towards his err- investigation in here? I’m sorry.”
You grabbed your stuffy and sprinted into the bathroom, hiding in the corner just as the door unlocked.
You heard it close.
“Y/n?”
Shouto sighed when he found your hiding spot.
“I’m sorry for all the stuff i said..  None of it’s true.”
You stood up, and the half and half hero pulled you into himself, burying your face in his chest. He rested his head on yours and sighed, as you weakly attempted to pull away.
“sh-Shouto.” You sobbed “I need to comfort y-you!”
“I’m sorry, but right now you need to be comforted.”
You pushed away from his chest slightly, and looked up at him.
“N-no you don’t trus-ust me.”
“I know, I’m working on it.”
“I think we-we need to take a bre-break.”
“From hugging? Sorry, i didn’t mean to suf-”
“No, from us..”
Todoroki backed away. He didn’t say anything for a few minutes.
“Are you sure?”
You sniffed again and rubbed your nose on your sleeve.
“Yeah, I’ll come over to pack some stuff. I just n-need a break.”

SERIES MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“What? How?” you looked at him with a worrisome face.
“We don’t know yet but we are gonna catch him don’t worry” his hands come up to your shoulders in assurance.
“Then we must go now he might be planning something dangerous to take revenge on us” saying so you were about to rush back to your room to get dressed but Tom caught hold of your hand.
“Y/N stop, you can’t go”
“Why? You only said we need to catch him” you look at him questioningly.
“By we I meant me and the boys. You are not going anywhere, not in this condition” he speaks softly placing a hand gently over your stomach “you remember what Dr. Martin said, right? No stress and as much rest as possible”
“But-but you don’t understand Tom I can help and I was pregnant the last time we caught him” you argue as Tom reaches his hand out to cup your face with an understanding smile.
“I know love but we weren’t aware of it at that time and I'm thankful that he didn’t do anything bad but not anymore" he caressed your cheek with his thumb "I’m not letting either of you come in harm's way” you were about to say something but he cut you off “please Y/N for this time just let me handle this. I know you’re strong and the most fearless woman I have ever met in my life but for this time for their sake at least stay back”
You finally gave up hanging your head low with a sigh. He was right with your current situation; it wasn't a wise idea. The risk would be too much and you can’t afford it, not when it’s about the safety of the little ones growing inside you.
“Okay but promise me you’ll be careful and in no circumstance you will risk your life” you place your hand over his on your stomach “we will be waiting for you”
“I promise I’ll be safe” he presses a soft kiss on your forehead “you just take care of yourself. I have told the guards everything and Leslie will also be there” he gives a one last peck on your lips before parting “I’ll be back in no time I promise” he reassures smiling as you nod mirroring his smile.
****
Tom along with with his brothers and Harrison were at their office in Westminster discussing their next move to get hold of Ethan before he makes a move against them.
“Any news?” Tom asks Harrison.
“Nothing,” he answers with disappointment.
“We searched downtown but found no trace of him,” Harry informs, exchanging glances with Sam.
“How is this even possible? A man escaped but is nowhere to be found?!” Tom groans in  frustration when they are interrupted by William whom Vanessa brought along with her in case he might be able to help track down Ethan with his years of experience with your father's mob.
“Only if the man has never left the place” he elucidates.
“What?” Tom’s brows knit in a frown.
“Has anyone seen him getting out of the house?” William throws the question to his men as they stood there silently with their gazes lowered down at the floor.
“Answer the question you morons!” Tom barks at them.
“No sir” one of them squeaks out in response as the frown on Tom’s face grows deeper.
“Well then you have your answer Ethan is still in your house hiding maybe seeking for the right opportunity” William remarks.
“Right opportunity for what?” Vanessa questions.
“Y/N..” Tom’s voice comes out shaky as panic washes over his face at the realization “Y/N is all alone in the house. We need to go now!”
****
You were in your room trying to keep yourself occupied by reading some books on parenting and childbirth to calm your nerves which honestly wasn’t helping much cause you knew how dangerous it is with Ethan escaping and the vipers seeking revenge. Since no one would be informing you about anything you thought it’s best, you take a nap as stressing about it will be useless and in turn be bad for the two little beans inside you.
You were about to lie down when you heard shuffling noises outside of your room. Your hand instantly reached out to your bedside table, opening the drawer you took out your gun and got off the bed. You carefully tip-toed out of your room, eyes scanning the corridors when you felt someone’s presence behind you. You cocked your gun ready to turn and shoot.
“I wouldn’t dare to do that” you heard, feeling the muzzle of a gun pressed to the back of your head.
“Ethan?” you frowned deeply.
“Miss me baby?” his voice dark and full of malice. You went to shove him in the stomach with your elbow but he was quick to catch hold of your hand and twist it back as the gun fell from your grasp on the floor.
“You’re getting clumsy sweetheart” he chuckles tauntingly.
“What do you want?!” you hissed struggling to set free.
“You’ll get to know soon but for now start walking”
“What makes you think I’ll listen to whatever you say?” you grit under your teeth.
“Well honey news is in the air that you're pretty knocked up right now" he snickers and your throat went dry, he knows "so if you don't do what I say I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to pull the trigger”
Usually you were tough and it takes a lot to shake you but now it is different. You couldn’t think of fighting back as fear grasped on to your mind and body. You weren’t alone, you had two lives growing inside you and in no way you were going to put their lives in danger so you remained quiet and decided to do exactly what you were told. You slowly walked down the stairs with Ethan behind you holding you by your arm with one hand the other had his gun pointed at the back of your head when Leslie walked out of the kitchen.
“Ma’am!” she gasped in horror and immediately pressed the alarm on the nearby wall to alert the guards outside as she rushed towards you in an attempt to save you.
“Get back or she dies” Ethan threatens, pressing the gun further to your head.
“It’s ok Les just stay where you are” you say calmly. Two of Tom’s men posted at the gate barged in pointing their guns.
“Put down your gun now or you’ll regret it” they threaten, cocking their guns which made Ethan chuckle darkly.
“You really thought I would be so stupid to do this all alone” he snickers when three men dressed in all black rounded them from behind. They pulled out their guns and within seconds several gunshots were fired piercing through their bodies as both of the guards dropped dead.
“Leslie run!” you shout at her.
“But…” she hesitates.
“Just go or they will kill you!” you tell her as she unwillingly ran to the back of the mansion to get out of the place.
“Yes, run to your boss and tell him that I got his most prized possession and soon I’ll have this whole city within my palms too” he grins wickedly. He then drags you out of the front door to the driveway where two SUV’s were parked.
“C'mon get inside the car” he nudged you as you reluctantly got in the passenger seat while he sat on the driver's seat and starts the car.
“Ethan you don’t wanna do this” you tried to talk some sense into him.
“Oh hell I wanna do it. Today I take back what is rightfully mine. Now shut the fuck up!” he yelled at you while driving and you flinched feeling utterly helpless.
“Tom is on his way he is gonna kill you and if my dad comes to know” you glared at him.
“I don’t care what that bastard wants, he has been using me to take hold of the drug cartel but I was the one who was using him to set up my own gang to take my sweet revenge. Your daddy thinks he owns the vipers, no honey, it's me who gives them the orders” he laughs when his eyes go to the phone in your hands “give me your phone” he orders.
“Why?” you tried to hide it away from him
“Just give it to me dammit!” he snatched it out of your hand and threw it out of the window on the side of the road “now no one will know where you are” he chuckles darkly speeding away through the traffic.
****
“Y/N! Y/N! Where are you?!” Tom stormed inside the house to be met with the two dead bodies of his men in a pool of blood.
“Oh God!” V gasped in horror and the boys were left dumbfounded at the scene in front of them..
“Y/N! Where are you?!” Tom called out again desperately.
“Sir!” a very terrified Leslie came running from the back of the house.
“Leslie, where is Y/N? Answer me!” he demanded.
“They took her sir” she broke down into tears as Tom felt the ground slipping from under his feet.
“Uggh this is all my fault!” he knocks off the glass sculpture kept on the nearby table out of rage.
“Tom, calm down, get yourself together!” Harrison stops him from breaking any other things further.
“How can I stay calm Harrison?! That bastard took her and I wasn’t even there to save her. Now I don’t know where she is or even if she is alive or not” he laments.
“You need to think clearly, Tom. He won’t do anything to her I’m sure not until he gets what he wants” William remarks and just then Tom’s phone rang with an unknown caller id
“Take it I’m sure it’s him” William advised he pressed the call button as Ethan’s face became visible on the scream.
“Hey Tom, what’s up man?” he says with a smug grin.
“You scum, where is Y/N?! If you lay a finger on her you’re gonna die a very brutal death!” Tom barked.
“Oh don’t worry, she's alright. For now. Say hi to your husband honey” he mocks flipping the camera towards you. Tom’s heart clenched seeing you tied up to a chair. You looked completely exhausted as you somehow lifted your face up to face the camera.
“Y/N…” he croaks a lump growing inside his throat as he fights back his tears after seeing you being treated like this when you should in the comfort of your home.
“Tom-Tom, don’t agree to what he says it’s a tra-” you tried to warn him but were quickly cut off.
“Okay that’s enough sweetheart”
“Give me my Y/N back!” Tom growled in rage.
“Woah not so fast not until you give me what I want” he remarks with a smug grin.
“What the hell do you want?!”
“Nothing much, just hand over your mob and accept my allegiance only then you'll get your wife back. I’m giving you 12 hours to think Tom after that I’ll empty this gun into her head” he threatens and the call disconnects.
“Hey wait!” Tom yells at the dark screen.
“Let’s go! We don’t have much time” Tom was about to rush out when Harry stopped him
“Wait Tom, are you seriously going to hand over everything?”
“I'm ready to give up everything for Y/N. I don't give a fuck about the mob because that’s the reason behind Y/N, my wife, the mother of children is being held captive in the first place!” he snaps.
“Don’t do anything in a rush you don’t want to strengthen your enemy’s power do you?” William remarks..
“Yes Tom, I agree with William too. You do remember what the Coopers did back then before your dad had to kill them himself?” Harrison reminded him.
“Yes I do but what option do we have?” Tom sighed unable to find a way out
“You have an option” V speaks up
“What?”
“Ask papa for help” she suggests
“Are you out of your mind?! You’re telling me to ask another enemy of ours for help for whom Y/N was almost going to die!” Tom says disapproving her idea.
“Just listen to me for once all this rivalry between you and our dad is just because of the business. If he comes to know that Y/N is in danger he would certainly help cause he loves his family more than anything” she explains.
“Vanessa is right Tom only Victor can help you. The vipers were his gang after all he will know everything and you also need more men to overpower Ethan” William agrees.
“What do you guys say?” Tom looks at his brothers and Harrison.
“You should call him” they all suggest unanimously. After a little pondering Tom took a deep breath and dialed his number.
“You really have the balls to call us after what you did Holland” Julian quipped.
“Julian you gotta listen to me mate this is important. Ethan escaped”
“Well it's not our problem that he escaped”
“He has your sister Julian” Tom informs.
“And why would I help you to save her who is the reason we are about to lose the whole drug cartel”
“It wasn’t your sister Julian it was Ethan all along he had been double crossing you and using the vipers to grab hold of the drug cartel behind you back”
“So what? We just don’t care now end the call”
“Jules, wait your sister is pregnant” Tom reveals as Julian perks up at the news.
“What? What the hell are you talking about?” Julian asks with concern in his voice.
“She is expecting. I know you have had issues but I also know you care for her and so does Mr. Martinez. I know he is listening to this too. It's your daughter sir and if you really want her to stop hating you then help us take down Ethan” Tom’s voice breaks as he pleads with them.
“Dad?” Julian turned to Victor.
“I'm gonna kill that bastard myself!” Victor mutters standing up from his chair enraged “everyone to get ready and tell them to meet at the Docklands”
****
After searching for almost three hours your father was able to locate you. You were being held in an old factory near Kennington. They drove to that place as fast as they could and stopped a mile ahead to not alert his goons. Carefully they walked over to the place and took down the guards posted outside surrounding the place. Tom along with Harrison and your father and brother entered the building killing anyone who came in their way. The deserted factory echoed with the loud noise of gunshots and you knew that Tom was here to rescue you.
“You hear that? Tom is here, you’re going to die Ethan” you quipped a knowing smile etched on your face.
“Not so easily” he goes to untie the ropes and pulls you up on your feet pressing his gun against the side of your head.
“Y/N!” Tom barged in.
“Come closer and she dies,” Ethan threatens.
“You might want to reconsider mate” Tom says with a sly smirk
“Why is that?”
“Your sister Meredith, is her name right? And she lives in an apartment near Brixton” he muses “guess what? my brothers happen to be there too” fear washed over Ethan’s face as he realized how the tables have turned and all thanks to your father who knew about his sister and told Tom about her.
“No, keep my sister out of this” he says weakly.
“You left me no choice mate” Tom tsks “it’s over Ethan so let Y/N go and no one gets hurt” he warns him as Ethan removes the gun from your head and lets go of you. You take one quick glance at him and then look at Tom standing in front of you. You immediately strided your way towards him with tears in your eyes but Ethan had something else in his mind. He lifted his gun again and pulled the trigger aiming at your back.
“Y/N!!” Tom shrieked but before the bullet could hit you Victor was on time to pull you in his tight embrace guarding you as the bullet hit him on his right  shoulder. He flinched in pain as you grasped on to his shirt trembling.
“Daddy?” you said weakly glancing up to him with tear filled eyes.
“It’s ok mija I’m here now. Don’t worry everything is going to be alright” he caresses the back of your head gently as you feel your head spin. The stress was too much for you to handle and you fainted in his arms.
“Go get that motherfucker!” Tom shouted seeing Ethan trying to flee. His men were quick to grab him as Harrison snatched the gun out of his hand and punched him right at his face.
“Jules, take her to the hospital now!” your father instructed. Jules took you from his arms and carried you to the car and immediately left for the hospital.
Tom stalked his way towards Ethan as if he was a prey. He cocked his gun, his gaze stone cold eyes burning with rage. He kicks Ethan on his legs as his knees buckled and he kneeled down on the floor in front of him.
“Tom please let me go I swear I’ll go as far away as possible and never return back” Ethan begs for his mercy.
“You should have thought about it before you decided to shoot Y/N” Tom growled, pressing the gun in between his eyes. But for some reason he couldn’t bring himself to pull the trigger. It didn’t feel right to him.
“Tom, what are you waiting for?” Harrison nudged him.
“I-I can’t, Y/N wouldn’t want this” Tom looked at him unsure of what to do “it’s better we hand him over to the police” he suggests.
“If you can’t I will” Victor interrupts and aggressively points his gun at Ethan.
“No Victor, wait!” Tom tried to stop him but it was too late he had already pulled the trigger and Ethan’s lifeless body collapsed on the ground.
“It’s ok Tom nobody gets away after messing with my family” he shrugs when the blaring of the sirens could be heard from a distance.
“Get out of here right now!” Victor says to Tom.
“But..” Tom hesitates.
“Leave or you’ll get caught too” he insists.
“What about you?”
“I think it’s time for me to pay for my crimes” he sighs looking at the gun in his hand with a contemplating smile etched on his face. The screeching of car tires could be heard as the bellowing of the sirens grew louder which was soon followed by the clamoring footsteps of people in tactical boots.
“Now go to my daughter she needs you” Victor rushes him “and remember to keep her happy and safe or else I’ll hunt you down too” he warns him.
“Will keep that in mind” Tom smirks and walks out of the place.
“Raise your hands where I can see them!” Grace orders and without a single Victor raises his hands in surrender.
“Victor Martinez you are under arrest for embezzlement and several other crimes including hoarding and smuggling of illegal drugs and murders” Grace states pointing her gun at him along with a team of officers behind her. A male officer was quick to handcuff him. Tom watched it whole from a distance as he was led inside the police van before leaving for the hospital.
You woke up to the rhythmic beeping of the EKG. Your eyes slowly adjust to the lighting of the hospital room.
“Tom..Tom” you mumbled half awake.
“Hey, hey I’m right here” Tom quickly gets up from the couch and holds your hands as you sit up.
“Tom what happened?” you ask warily.
“You fainted honey, your blood pressure went low due to all the stress” he informs.
“What about our babies?” your hand goes to your stomach as you look at him with panic stricken eyes “are they ok? Tom, are they safe?” you rambled out of fear.
“Yes darling, they are safe and healthy the doctor’s confirmed” he assures you gently brushing your hair with his hands.
“Oh thank god” you heaved a sigh of relief.
“I think we should thank your dad too cause if he wasn’t there in time you would have got shot” he remarks.
“I know,” you say, staring at your lap.
“Y/N the interpol and police took your father”
“Well that was going to happen some or the other day anyways” you half shrugged.
“But he saved you, saved us”
“I know and that’s the irony for the first time my dad genuinely showed that cared about me and now I will never see him again” you say with regret in your voice.
4 months later….
You were seated in the huge courtroom of the New York State Supreme Court with Tom, Vanessa and your mother by your side as you awaited the jury’s verdict on the charges you, your father and brother have been indicted with. After your father’s arrest the underworld imploded and most of the leaders went into hiding to save their businesses and escape the law. It was a huge issue in the international media too, the trial went on for three months. You had to travel back and forth to appear before the court for the murders you were charged with.
Though they could never find any proof against you, your dad and your husband made sure of that. Tom had told you that he had requested the families not to testify against you and they had agreed. But you know his way of requesting people very well : it's pointing a gun at their head. If they don’t agree then they are permanently relieved of their life.
When you said that to him he laughed it off by saying “that’s preposterous! I would never do that” and you gave him ‘not buying it’ look “okay the old me would but I’m a changed man now and as I promised no violence” he clarified. But you knew better and you didn’t mind this time really cause you didn’t want to abandon this beautiful life you finally got and go to jail.
Moreover in less than two months there will be two new additions to your little family and you don’t want to miss any of it. You knew that you could never get rid of the blood in your hands and so did Tom but this time you are gonna start afresh for those pure little souls that are coming to light up your entire world and remove the darkness that had been clouding your lives.
“The jury have reached a verdict” the judge’s voice echoed through the silent courtroom and Tom places his hand over yours comfortingly giving you a reassuring smile telling you that everything will be ok “and they unanimously find Victor Martinez guilty of the following charges related to extortion, money laundering, murders and illegal smuggling of drugs. He is being sentenced to lifetime imprisonment” the judge declared.
“Also due to lack of evidence the jury declares Julian Martinez and Y/N Holland innocent and free of all charges” he adds and Tom squeezes your hand gently with a soft smile and a relief in his eyes as you look at him mirroring his smile.
“The court is adjourned for the day” the judge announced and everybody stood up from their seats to walk out of the room one by one. You watched your dad getting handcuffed and being taken away by the officials as your brother followed them to finish the rest of the formalities that needed to be done before they took your father to the prison. For once you wanted to hug him tight and let him know that you loved him even after whatever went down between you. You wanted to let him know that you have forgiven him, you felt bad for your mother too after all he is her husband.
“Don’t worry honey I’ll be fine” she touches your shoulder breaking you out of your thoughts.
“I’m really sorry mom you don’t deserve this” you sniffled
“It’s ok, Y/N I knew this day was coming soon and how much ever you feel bad a crime is a crime”
“Mom, you can come live with us. I can talk to Tom, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind” you offered.
“No sweetie that’s not happening I’m better off here and Jules will be there I will be perfectly ok. You just take care of yourselves”
“Hello Mrs Martinez” Tom interrupts.
“Hello Tom”
“Honey it’s quite some time you ate anything let’s get you something shall we?” he suggested to you.
“Yeah I’m feeling a little hungry to be honest” you  remarked.
“I know love, let’s go then there’s a nice café right around the corner of the street” he says as Julian joins you three too.
“All formalities are complete, it’s time for us to leave as well” he informs as you walk to him and held his hands.
“Jules please take care of my mother” you ask him with hopeful eyes.
“I will don’t worry” he pulls you in a hug and kisses your forehead “you guys take care too, alright” you nod and go to hug your mom before leaving the place with Tom.
Tom and you slowly walked out of the court and made your way to the café. Upon entering the shop you saw Vanessa already waiting for you as you went and sat down at the table while Tom went to give your orders. You were a little bit out of breath cause being seven months pregnant with twins is no big joke. You get easily tired now. Your stomach has grown round and big in the past few months which makes it difficult for you to bend down. But Tom was always there for you patiently helping you out. He even signed up for birthing and parenting classes so that you are ready for everything.
“Well finally it’s over isn’t it? You got what you wanted” V chimes.
“Yeah kind of” you sigh “is it wrong though that I feel bad for him?”
“Not at all after all he is our father we have the right to feel bad but past is past we gotta move on” you remarks “so how are the little munchkins?”
“Oh they are doing quite well and also not letting their mother sleep with their constant kicking seems like they can’t wait to come out already and so do I. I really want my precious sleep back” you joked.
“Oh sissy for the next two years forget about sleep cause you will be getting none” V snickers.
“Can’t complain though I voluntarily signed up for it” you shake your head smiling as you pull out a file from inside your bag “here” you say handing over the file to her.
“What is this?” V looks at you cluelessly.
“A deal is a deal, open it” you tell her as she opens the file and goes through the papers. Her eyes widened with shock as she finished reading the last page.
“What?! Are you serious?”
“I told you I’ll give your rightful share in the family so this is it” you stated.
“But you are giving me the rum and diamond business. That’s yours” she emphasized.
“I know but I don’t have the time or interest to run it and I can’t handle the business in New York while staying in London. Moreover, Tom has decided to start a chain of luxury resorts and since I have a management degree I’ll be helping him to expand it” you explain “so I’m entrusting you with our family businesses. Welcome to the family V” you look at her with a proud smile.
“I’ll not disappoint you” she promises.
“I know you won’t”

The Greatest Healing Therapy Is Friendship (And Love) (Tobin Heath x Reader)
Tumblr media
Leaving physical therapy one day, Tobin Heath becomes enthralled with the sound of a nearby voice, which inevitably leads her to you, a patient with a bad heart, and a kind smile.
Tobin Heath was far from happy.
Injuries happened from time to time, but being benched for 10-12 weeks, for not only a number of Manchester United games, but the She Believe’s Cup as well put Tobin in an incredibly foul mood, a rain cloud hanging over her head.
She stops midstride when she hears someone barking out a laugh, the sound making her head turn back and forth in search of its source.
“Listen, you and I both know this food is shit.”
Tobin’s brows arch as she peeks into a nearby room. She wasn’t the type to intrude, but for some reason she felt pulled forward by the voice.
Tobin watches a crinkle form between your brows as you turn her way, though moments later a smile stretches across your face.
“Look there, let’s get a second opinion.” You grin, nodding to Tobin.
“So stranger, this food sucks, right? I mean, don’t even get me started on the Jello...”
Tobin clears her throat, shaking her head.
“I-I haven’t had it.”
You sigh, your head hanging in defeat.
“Sorry to say stranger, but you’ve let me down.” You frown, your head lolling towards the nurse.
“The food’s still shit.”
The nurse rolls her eyes, but she can't deter the smile that stretches across her face.
“You still have to eat Y/N.”
The nurse shakes her head as she leaves the room.
You whine.
“Ey! Can I get some Popeyes? Taco Bell?”
“No!” You hear the nurse shout and you groan, your hand resting on your chest.
You turn to Tobin with an arched brow.
“I’m not sure if we’ve ever met stranger, I’m Y/N.”
Tobin steps towards the bed with a smile, her eyes darting from the multiple machines around you to the wires that lead down the front of your hospital gown.
“Mind the attire.” You chuckle and Tobin smiles.
“I’m Tobin.” She whispers, nodding to the machines.
“What happened?” She asks curiously and you sigh.
“Heart attack, I know, I know, how can someone as young and good looking as me have a heart attack?” You smirk, the woman unable to bite back a grin.
“I didn't know heart disease was hereditary until I ended up in the hospital because of it.” You sigh tiredly.
After a lengthy yawn, you turn to Tobin.
“So, Tobin, what is the purpose of your visit?” You ask and she shrugs.
“Just had to see who was going so hard at the nurse.” She smiles and you snort.
“Eh, I’ve been here for a while, they’re used to it by now.” You shrug, your eyelids fluttering.
“Well Tobin, it was nice meeting you, feel free to drop by next time you’re in, I’ll probably be here.” You sigh, unable to fight off sleep.
Tobin smiles, her brown orbs on you as you slowly drift off.
Tobin’s smile splits into a grin.
“Nice meeting you too, Y/N. I might take you up on that.”
                                                             ***
It’s a day or two later that Tobin finds herself limping down the same hallway, the woman coming to a stop in front of a particular patient’s door.
She slowly pushes the door open, poking her head inside.
“Anybody home?” She asks as she knocks on the door, the woman receiving no response.
Tobin frowns.
She’d hoped to see you after a tough day of physical therapy, but unfortunately, it looked as if that wasn’t going to happen.
“I see you took me up on my offer.”
Tobin turns around, smiling when she sees you being wheeled towards her by the nurse from the other day, a massive grin on your face.
“I was in the neighborhood.” Tobin shrugs and you chuckle.
“Boot looks good on you.” You wink and Tobin snorts.
“Sure, it does.”
You nod towards the door.
“Let me get hooked back up and then you can come in, I’m pretty sure we’re not to the point where you’re okay with seeing me naked.” You snort, Tobin’s eyes widening as her cheeks flush.
“Ye-Ye-Yeah.”
You lean your head back.
“Ready driver?”
The nurse rolls her eyes, unable to hold back a giggle.
“To get you out of my hair?”
You pout, your hand resting on your chest.
“You wound me so.”
Tobin shakes her head, the woman leaning against a nearby wall as she waits for you to get dressed.
Moments later the door is swinging open, the nurse from before making her way out with a smile.
“She’s decent.”
Tobin pushes off the wall before making her way into your room, the woman smiling when she sees you.
You give her a wave.
“Haven’t seen you in agessssssssss!” You snicker and Tobin rolls her eyes, pulling a nearby chair to the side of your bed before flopping down into it.
“What’s your damage anyway?” You ask and Tobin nods to her boot.
“Ankle.”
You grimace.
“How’d you do that?”
“Playing soccer.”
You hum.
Tobin nods to you.
“How’d...” Tobin points to your chest and you sigh.
“I was jogging. My chest got really tight and I went down like a sack of potatoes.” You shrug.
“I woke up with a tube down my throat and an incision down my chest.”
Tobin frowns, glancing around the room, her frown deepening when she realizes there’s no balloons, or even a get well soon card.
You sigh, your eyelids fluttering.
“Do you have any family?” She asks, the words surprising her immensely.
Your brow arches.
“Pretty personal question Tobes-
“I’m sorry I-
“I’m kidding, no, I don’t.”
Tobin nods.
“I’m sorry.”
You smirk.
“Hey, I don’t need visitors, not when I have you.” You grin, not even opening your eyes, meaning you miss the flush on Tobin’s cheeks.
You murmur, doing your best to fight off sleep, but you find it impossible.
Tobin smiles.
“Sleep Y/N, we’ll talk another day.”
You smile tiredly.
“I like the sound of that.”
                                                             ***
The next time Tobin enters your room, she’s carrying not only a balloon, but a teddy bear, as well as a get well soon card.
Her lips part, the woman about to greet you, but when she realizes you’re fast asleep her mouth snaps shut.
Instead of tip toing out of the room, she places your gifts on a nearby table and takes up residence in a nearby chair.
Lately, Tobin found herself excited to come to physical therapy, because coming to the hospital meant seeing you.
Seeing you had become the best part of her week, so much so that sitting on the sidelines and watching the others play at the She Believe's Cup hadn’t been bothering her as much as it typically would be.
Tobin pulls her legs up into the chair, wrapping her arms around them, her knees hugged to her chest.
She was exhausted, the colder the nights got, the worse her foot cramped, meaning she got little to no sleep more often than not.
Soon, Tobin finds her own eyelids fluttering, the woman fighting off sleep, though she loses the fight rather quickly, exhaustion overwhelming her as she falls fast asleep.
                                                             ***
A soft, yet noticeable snoring is what wakes you sometime later, your brows furrowing as your eyes crack open.
You hum, wiping the sleep from your eyes as you turn towards the source of the snoring.
A smile stretches across your face when you realize the snoring is coming from Tobin, the woman fast asleep in the chair beside your bed.
You grin when out of the corner of your eye you spot a bright balloon, the air-filled rubber bouncing slightly with the air condition’s aid.
You shake your head when your eyes find the teddy bear resting just below the balloon.
Tobin grimaces as she wakes, the woman stretching her arms above her head with a groan.
“Morning.” You smile, your eyes still locked onto the tiny toy resting on the nearby table.
Tobin quickly realizes you’re staring at the plush bear and smiles.
“Do you like it?” She asks with a yawn and you nod, turning towards her, your eyes glazed over.
“Yeah, yeah I really do.”
Tobin grimaces, the woman rubbing her booted foot.
“I didn’t mean to fall asleep.” She blushes and you shake your head.
“I just woke up anyway, thanks to your snoring.”
Tobin scoffs.
“I do not snore.”
You snort.
“Then what were you doing, gargling your spit?”
Tobin’s eyes narrow, the woman giving your arm a playful shove.
“Shut up.”
You laugh, a belly shaking laugh that makes your chest ache, your hand immediately jumping to your chest.
Tobin springs to her feet, the woman ducking down beside you.
“Are you alright?” She asks as she places a hand on your back, the feel of her palm on your bare back making you blush.
“Ye-Yeah, just some chest pains.”
Tobin worriedly glances over her shoulder.
“Should I get a nurse?”
You shake your head, giving Tobin a small smile.
“It’ll pass.”
Tobin pulls her chair closer to your bedside and sits down, her hand still resting on your bare shoulder.
The pain eventually passes, though the flush on your cheeks doesn’t fade considering Tobin’s palm is still flat on your back, her thumb running back and forth across your tanned flesh.
You sigh, smiling when Tobin gently guides you back, your head hitting the soft pillow behind your head.
“You should rest.” She whispers, the woman tucking a strand of loose hair behind your ear.
You hum.
“Not yet, you’re here.”
Tobin smiles.
“I can always come back.”
You hum, the corner of your mouth ticking downwards slightly.
“You know, I’ll be getting out of here eventually, hopefully soon.”
Tobin nods, silently, the last thing she wanted to do was lose contact with you, especially when seeing you had made her heart skip a beat and her palms sweat with nerves.
She knew what she felt for you was more than friendship, and the thought of losing you made her stomach churn.
“I uhhh, I live here, in Portland you know...? Do-Do you live here? In P-Portland I mean...” You wiggle nervously, unable to look at the woman beside you.
Tobin bites her bottom lip hard to stave off a grin, the flush on your cheeks making her heart flutter in her chest.
She hoped, hoped maybe what she felt for you was returned, and by the way you were currently acting, it seemed it was.
“It almost sounds like you want to see me after you leave the hospital...” She grins and your eyes widen.
“Uhh... I-I mean...”
Your typical humor and cockiness fell away in that moment as you stuttered, unable to find the words you were searching for.
Your cheeks flush darker and darker as you stumble over your words, only saved when Tobin takes your hand, and gives it a squeeze.
You fall silent, your wide eyes dropping down to your joined hands before your eyes eventually meet Tobin’s.
She gives your hand a squeeze, her smile splitting into a bright grin that makes her brown orbs shine.
“I think I’d like to see you after too.”
Tobin laughs as she visibly watches your eyes lighten up.
“R-Really?” You stutter and she nods.
“Really.”
                                                             ***
Tobin walked through the hospital with a bit of pep in her step, the knowledge that you possibly felt the same way about her as she felt about you made her incredibly hopeful for the future.
She makes her way into your room with a smile, expecting to see you waiting for her, she’s taken aback though when she finds an empty bed.
Her brows furrow, her eyes zeroing in on the teddy bear and the get well soon balloon she’d brought you days before.
She turns, making her way out of the room, her head on a swivel in search of the nurse she’d seen in your room so often.
“She didn’t make it?”
Tobin stiffens, a lump forming in her throat.
“She’d been complaining of chest pains, she had a second heart attack this morning, we couldn’t revive her.”
Tears welled up in Tobin’s eyes, the woman dropping to her knees in the middle of the hospital’s hallway.
You couldn’t be gone, you just couldn’t be, not after everything, not after being through so much, you couldn’t be gone.
“Tobin, are you alright?”
Tobin picks her head up, tears streaming down her cheeks as she looks up at the nurse who’d tended to you each and every day.
“She can’t be gone; she just can’t be.” Tobin sniffs, brown orbs filled with tears as she stares at the nurse who’s brows furrow.
“What are you-
“Tobin!? Tobin are you okay!?”
Tobin stiffens, her head snapping up in search of your all too familiar voice.
Teary brown orbs zero in on you, you who are currently jumping out of your wheelchair and running down the hall towards her, gown long gone, your new clothes clinging to your form.
You drop to your knees in front of her and cup her cheeks, your thumbs wiping away the tears covering her face.
“Hey, hey what’s wrong? Are you okay? What happened???” You ask, your eyes darting worriedly around her face.
Tobin simply stares at you for a moment, her shaky, clammy hands moving to cover your own.
“Your room was empty, a-a-and the nurses said they lost someone... I thought...”
You blink, your eyes widening when you realize what Tobin had thought.
You shake your head, attempting to swallow the lump in your throat as you lean in, your forehead resting against hers.
“It wasn’t me, I’m okay.” You whisper, your eyes fluttering shut.
Unconsciously, Tobin’s hand leaves yours, instead moving towards your chest.
Your eyes widen, your cheeks flushing as her hand meets your chest, the woman sighing in relief at the feel of your heart, beating beneath her palm.
Your hand leaves her cheek, moving to cover hers that’s currently resting on your chest.
“I’m okay.” You repeat, your heart skipping a beat when Tobin’s fingers slip between your own.
Tobin takes a deep breath in an attempt to calm her racing heart, but considering the proximity between the two of you, it’s a bit hard.
Tobin’s teary brown orbs drop to your lips before again locking with your Y/E/C’s,
Your eyes widen when you realize Tobin’s leaning in, the woman’s nose lightly grazing your own.
A chill runs through you, your eyes fluttering shut in anticipation as Tobin’s lips brush yours, the kiss unlike any kiss you’d had before.
You bring your free hand up to her cheek, your thumb caressing her tanned flesh.
The two of you part only to lean right back in seconds later, unable to get enough of the feel of your lips against one another’s.
You tilt your head to the side, changing the angle of the kiss as your lips meet again and again, something you’d been craving since the moment you woke to find her sleeping at your bedside.
Again, you part, though neither of you pull away, Tobin leaning back in to rest her forehead against your own.
Brown orbs flutter open as a red flush dances across Tobin’s cheeks, the woman unable to bite back a grin.
“And now?” Tobin whispers, your brows furrowing in question.
“How do you feel now?” She asks in a whisper and you chuckle.
“A lot more than okay.”

same anon here that asked for the remus returning thing, sorry for the confusion i meant like after he gets back but they aren’t back together yet and there are those few days we’re dora is kinda cold and distant just to protect herself and remus is doing whatever he can :)
My girl Dora ain’t no doormat, no way was she letting him get away with treating her like that and just forgive him immediately. Remus did some grovelling for sure.
Pairing: Remus lupin x Nymphadora Tonks
Warnings: none
You can find all my other writing on my masterlist and remember my ask box is always open, I love any and all requests so please do send them my way!
Tonks woke up to the sound of quiet clattering, a scent of sausages and bacon and eggs. Fresh pastries and pumpkin juice. She opened one eye but the bedroom door was closed still, the other side of the bed as cold as it had been for the last month and a half. Ever since Remus had returned to her he’d been sleeping on the sofa, still trying to even come to terms with being able to look at him in the eye. Never mind sleep beside him. She had said she’d sleep on the sofa at first. It was his home after all, who was she to make him sleep on the sofa in his own home? But he’d insisted she take the bed.
She had deliberated moving to her parents. She knew that would be the eventual outcome anyway, they weren’t exactly in the position for her to just waltz into st Mungos to give birth. But the thought of staying with her mother fussing for longer than necessary wasnt all that appealing. So she had stayed put and waited for Remus. And now he was on the sofa until she finally shifted the last of her hurt.
She still loved him, of course she did. But she couldn’t shake the purely painful feeling of betrayal. He had come back so she guessed she should have been relieved. But it was the fact that he had ran in the first place. The fight had been bitter, his words stinging her like acid, biting at her, beating her down until she felt completely worthless. She’d never heard him say such things. She didn’t know he had it in him. He’d always been such a gentle soul, she’d only heard him raise his voice once or twice. But everyone has a breaking point, everyone snaps. And he had. At her.
She’d never known he could muster words so cruel. Didn’t know his usually gentle face could twist into such hatred. Didn’t know he could look at as if he could barely stand to be within ten feet of her, when he so often only looked at her with adoration.
He’d come back quite literally begging for her forgiveness, down on his knees and finding every and any word he could to try and prove how sorry he was. She had let him back because she loved him. Because she was carrying their child. But she hadn’t forgiven him. And she wasn’t about to anytime soon she guessed. No matter how hard he was trying to win her back around.
He kept leaving her gifts, there was a constant supply of fresh flowers for her every morning. She had ignored them at first, leaving them on the kitchen counter to wilt and die. He’d started placing them in a vase now. Sometimes it was breakfast- like it seemed to be that morning from the smell. Fresh pastries on the pillow when she went to bed, chocolate frogs in her sock drawer, copies of the quibbler because she liked the comic pages, the list was never ending. She couldn’t lie that she liked his grovelling, it was really the least he could do after all he’d said to her. And she felt she deserved to have him pay for what he’d done.
She sat up in bed and sighed to herself, glancing over at the small box beside the bed that held her wedding ring. She’d thrown it in his face the night he’d left her, it landing somewhere at their feet in the front garden. She’d not even been sure on where it had landed. It had appeared on her pillow a few days after Remus had come back and she wondered if he’d actually taken it with him when he ran. Or if he’d just searched for it when he returned. She’d shoved it in the box and not touched it since. She wished she could’ve gone back to the wedding day. He’d been so happy. She’d been so happy. Her mother would’ve hated the wedding, but that had made almost a little more enjoyable. It wasn’t even the slightest part traditional.
A tiny church in what felt like the coldest part of Scotland going. Some strangers they’d met a few hours before in a local pub as witnesses, no big crowds of guests. No fancy white dress. She’d worn her boots and the nicest dress she could find in her wardrobe back home. Her bouquet had been some flowers nicked from someone’s front garden, one of which she’d pinned to Remus. It wasn’t perfect in anyone else’s eyes, but it was to her. To him. They’d shared their own vows, been bound together by magic and love and hope. They’d danced all night, stayed up until the sun rose sat up on a cliff over looking the sea. And of course the stumbled walk back to their B&B over the pub, the event that had inevitably created the tiny person residing inside her now. And that was that.
But the Remus that had shouted at her, told her that they had no choice but to her rid of the abomination they had created… that didn’t feel like the Remus she had married. She didn’t recognise that man. That wasn’t her Remus. That wasn’t the man she loved, had married, had given up everything for. He was a stranger to her.
She got dressed then, not wanting to fall into the hole of longing for Remus again and put herself in a bad mood, before leaving the bedroom. Remus was stood in the kitchen and smiling at her as she opened the bedroom door. The bedroom was the only place in the house that offered her privacy, the rest being tiny and open plan. She spent most of her time in there just lately and thankfully for her, he often left her to it. The bedroom being almost out of bounds to him. He hadn’t stepped foot in there since coming back.
“ good morning Dora “ he greeted quietly and she shook her head at him, raising a hand and pointing at his face.
“ no. I told you already. You don’t get to call me that now “ he looked down at the floor for a moment and nodded. He looked like a kicked puppy but she told herself she didn’t care. He deserved to hurt like she had. He did.
“ right. I’m sorry. Tonks “ he cleared his throat awkwardly and gestured to the table “ I. I have breakfast for you. I have to nip out to the Weasleys for a while but there’s more food in the fridge for you if that isn’t to your liking “ she sniffed and turned her head away from the table. She didn’t know why but his kindness just made her mad. Like a switch flicked inside of her.
“ and you’ll return this time? Or planning another week away? “ he sighed and ran a hand through his hair “ need another chat with Harry so you? Listen to a child’s advice but not your own wife right? “
“ Dora ple- “
“ no! “ she hadn’t completely intended to shout but she had. She closed her eyes, balling her hair into fists and tried to get rid of her sudden lack of calm. She could feel angry tears burning behind her eyelids and she blamed her messed up hormones. She refused to cry in front of him again. Refused to show the hurt he was still causing her weeks after her left “ just. Just go the Weasleys. Go on “ he hesitated for a moment and gave a small nod.
He knew better than to argue with her now. Knew it would get him no where.
“ just. Please make sure you eat something. It’s not good for the b- “
“ don’t stand there and pretend you care “ she snapped “ don’t “
“ Tonks I do. I do care I have apologised I don’t know what else I- “
“ if you cared you wouldn’t have left “ there was silence then. So quiet it was almost painful. But she felt like twisting the knife, plunging it deeper and drawing out as much agony as she could. She wanted him to hurt like she had, to feel the pieces of his heart shatter inside his chest, splinter his lungs so it felt as though no air could reach him. Make him feel how she had “ I am only here because unfortunately for me. You are the father of my baby. I don’t care how much you apologise. I will never forgive you Remus Lupin. Never “
The words burnt her own throat as she spoke them, and regret seeped into her chest. But she stayed firm. Refused to cry. Refused to feel guilty. He deserved it.
She had clearly struck a nerve. His eyes swam with pain, his hands hanging limply at his side. Defeated. Hurt. She’d won that round.
“ I don’t know how many time I can apologise “ he said weakly “ I know it’ll never come close to repairing what I did but- “
“ please. Just go to the Weasleys “ she said with a sigh and turned away from him as her tears finally fell. She didn’t want him to see. She closed her eyes. gripping onto the kitchen counter so her knuckles turned white. She heard movement behind her and the front door opening.
“ please make sure you eat “ he said softly before the front door closed and she dropped down to her knees, letting her tears run freely. Her body wracked with sobs
————————-
When Remus had been on the sofa for 2 months, and Tonks was finally starting to pass the phase of just looking a little fat, to actually looking pregnant, nearing her 4th month. She had started to become a little more forgiving. She had started to sit with him at breakfast again, didn’t shut down every single conversation he tried to start with her, sat beside him when he read by the fire in the evenings. Though she always left a fair space between them.
She found she’d started to miss him greatly. Trying to deal with how much her body was changing on her own wasn’t exactly the most fun thing. Remus was still piling her with as much affection as he could, even though she still wasn’t particularly receptive to it. But she had to admire his determination.
“ Nymphadora. I was wondering if I could have a word “ she turned to face him as she toed off her boots, having only just gotten home from a trip to see her parents “ please. If you would “ she hung up her jacket and nodded, walking over to him as he gestured towards the table where a small yellow gift bag was sat.
She sat down at the small table, it had an old copy of the prophet folded up under one leg to stop it from wobbling, but it still moved slightly when she picked up the gift bag.
“ you can’t buy my forgiveness “ she stated, not looking inside the bag “ I told you that already Remus. I can’t be bought “ he gave a small nod, clasping his hands tighter.
“ yes. I know. I do. Just- please “ he nodded towards the bag and she hesitated but sighed before pulling at the ribbon and pulling out the tissue paper. She froze when her figures fell upon a soft cotton and she realised what was in the bag. She pulled it out, dropping the bag to the floor “ I wasn’t- I wasn’t sure on the size or- it’s like Hufflepuff, you see? Of course I couldn’t get an official one. It was a muggle shop and I had to be quite quick I didn’t want to risk anything. I mean I had options of course but- “
“ Remus “ she cut him off. It was a babygrow. It was a pastel green with a badger embroidered on the chest. It was the first piece of clothing their child had. She hadn’t exactly had the best of opportunities to go shopping down Diagon alley for some herself.
“ Dora “ he tried her nickname again for the first time in weeks and this time she didn’t chastise him for it “ I know I’ll never be able to take back what I said. But as I told you when I returned. I had time to think. And these past months I’ve been thinking too “ he reached out gingerly for her hand and when she didn’t pull away he gently took it in both of his “ all I ever wanted was a normal life. A normal family. And now… now I have that chance. With the woman I love and. And our child “
“ and what if he’s not… ‘ Normal ‘. If he’s different. I’d hes half werewolf. Or full. Or. In between “ she was getting a little tense with her words again and she tried her best to remain calm. She was finally getting a truthful and meaningful opinion from Remus on the matter. She should be thankful for that. Even with the betrayal still poking the back of her mind occasionally.
“ then I’ll love him all the same. He’ll be could be born with four legs and 5 arms, two heads. No magic at all. I’d still love him. Because we made him Nymphadora. You and I. And I…. I never thought I’d get that. I never believed I’d be a father. A husband. Now I have that opportunity and I see how much of a fool I was to try and throw that away “ he squeezed her hand gently, his thumb rubbing circles over her knuckles in a soothing way. She knew him well enough to know when he was lying to her. And he wasn’t now.
“ let’s deal with the possible moon situation before we worry about any extra limbs shall we? “ she said with a small smile and watched as he seemed to relax every muscle in his body, his worries that she wouldn’t accept his apologies slipping away “ I won’t forgot what you said to me. And to him “ she placed her free hand on her stomach as she spoke “ but you’re his dad. Nothing is going to change that. And the world really fucked up right now. Like. Really. And so we have to protect him. Love him more than we can even think about “ Remus nodded.
She refused to let the world ruin her baby, refused to let him be warped into a life of terror and fear. Of feeling outcast and alone like his father had. Remus stood up then and knelt down in front of her.
“ I love you Nymphadora. And I love him… or her “ she smiled slightly as he placed a gentle hand over hers that was still cradling her bump. Remus’ acceptance suddenly made it feel all the more real. In just 4 months they’d have a baby. A real one. Screaming and crying and laughing. A most innocent thing born into a world on the brink of disaster. And somehow her and Remus had to keep him safe. And kind. And loved. They weren’t exactly the most functional of couples so it was no doubt that their family wouldn’t be either. But they’d make it work. They would.
Werewolf or not.
—————————————-
It was another week after that that she finally caved. The talk had most definitely been the turning point. And she’d kissed him again that evening for the first time in months. Was actually letting him touch her again without recoiling. Though he was still on the sofa.
Though December had well and truly arrived. The cold weather setting her into an almost constant chill, the old cottage not offering much in terms insulation. And she missed having him wrapped around her. He was always warm. And didn’t complain when her cold hands found there way under his shirt in the night to warm up. She also just missed him. Just him. Her Remus. The man she’d fallen in love with. She wanted him back beside her, his slow breaths on her neck in the night, his legs tangled with hers. Even the way his facial hair scratched at her when they kissed. She just missed him.
So it was almost no surprise to her when she found herself slipping out of bed, the coldness of the stone floor seeping through her socks and chilling her already numb feet some more. She opened the bedroom door slowly to see if he was awake or not.
He was in the armchair, a book on his lap. Clearly having not planned to sleep there, he’d have a sore neck in the morning that was for certain. She grabbed the blanket from the back of the sofa and silently walked over to him. The fire was crackling in the hearth, immediately warming her up. She moved the book careful not to lose his page, before climbing into his lap in its place. She wrapped the blanket around them, bring her legs up and resting her head on his chest. One more month gone and she didn’t think she’d be able to manage that. She wasn’t the tallest or biggest of people. So her bump was still pretty small. But she loved it all the same.
Remus stirred slightly and made a small noise of confusion to wake up and find Dora on his lap. He opened his eyes fully, his eyelids heavy with sleep.
" Dora? "
" go back to sleep " she whispered and felt him give a small nod as his hand tentatively wrapped around her, like he was still unsure if he was allowed to touch her or not. She snuggled in a little closer to him as if to say it was okay and he fully wrapped around her, pulling the blanket up to her chin. It felt right to be in his arms like that again. They’d snuggled on the sofa the day before. But not as… intimate as this. It felt normal again. Like she belonged there.
" why did you- "
" I was just cold " she cut him off, ignoring the way his raspy sleep filled voice made her melt. She was trying to show that she was still just that little bit mad at him. But she couldn’t deny that she missed him. That yes she was still hurt, that she might always been. But nothing could compare to the amount that of love she had for him. Still. Even after all he’d done. No one would ever come close to the way she felt for Remus Lupin.
" right " She lifted her head for a moment to find he was already looking at her. And she couldn't help herself. Because time was precious now. And she was wasting it being angry all these months later. She slipped a hand up to cup his face before pulling him in to kiss her. He seemed a little surprised at first, his lips frozen for a moment before they opened to capture her own. But she didn't blame him because she was too. She hadn’t planned for that night to be that night she let go of the final part holding her back.
" this isn't me forgiving you " she said against his lips once they pulled apart. Half joking. Half not.
" I know " he seemed quite truthful with that. Like he understood her thinking. Maybe he did.
" good "
" good " she kissed him again and found herself shifting in his lap, slipping a leg either side of him. Because she was mad at him, she was really. But she loved him more. Missed him more. Needed him more. And soon she was unbuttoning his trousers and bunching up her sweatshirt- that was actually his- around her waist, rolling her hips against him until she was panting out his name, gripping the back of the armchair so hard she was surprised she didn’t splinter the wooden frame.
They stayed on the armchair even after Remus had cleaned them up, trying to keep the warmth of the fire in her body, trying to share Remus’ own body heat.
" Remus " she said when she was certain he was just dropping off, her head against his chest. Heading his heart beating felt like home. The familiar sound she had so often fallen asleep to. Comforting.
" I know. This isn't you forgiving me " he mumbled, hurt tinging his words.
" actually I was going to say that I love you "
" oh. Oh right... I love you too. You know I do " his arms tightened slightly around her and she let herself calm to the sound of his heart. She waited again until she felt him slackening with sleep to speak again, a slight mischief in her tone.
" oh and Remus? This isn't me forgiving you "

How could you do this babe?
In Breakable Heaven chapter one! Here we go!
Summary: Reader’s ready to celebrate her anniversary with her boyfriend, but things don’t go as planned.
Warnings: Cheating, swearing, drunk people
Word Count: ~2100
Tumblr media
“…leave a message at the beep.”
You couldn’t help but be disappointed that he didn’t answer, but didn’t mind leaving a message. “Hey babe, I was able to close the bookstore early! I should be to yours in the next few minutes if you want to celebrate early. I know you like to have ample time to get ready, so I guess I just wanted to warn you. Anyway, I love you. See you soon.” You left the voicemail as you walked to your car. Tonight you are celebrating your three-year anniversary. You even changed into your brand new lingerie to surprise him, wearing a long coat to hide it in public. It felt a little bit wrong not wearing real clothes, but you were determined to make this the best anniversary celebration yet.
The drive to his apartment was relatively uneventful. A light rain started about halfway through the five-minute drive. As you pull up to his apartment building, you notice the lights on in his room. “Good, he’s home” you think to yourself as you open the door, shuffling inside from the muggy DC weather. As you approach the apartment door, you can hear the soft music of the playlist you made last month featuring all of Taylor Swifts most romantic love songs. Your heart flutters as you think of the kind gesture. Of course, he would be thoughtful enough to put on music as you arrived at his apartment. Unlocking the door and untying your coat at the same time proved to more difficult than anticipated, but you managed to nudge the door open whispering “happy anniversary baby” in the sultriest tone you could.
As you took in the rest of the apartment, your heart burst. There were roses everywhere. Candles lit a path to the bedroom. Maybe he did know how to be a romantic. Dropping your things on the counter and sliding your coat off the rest of the way, you tip toed into the bedroom to surprise him since he clearly did not get your message. The next sixty seconds felt as though time stopped. Or, more accurately, you froze and everything else in the world took on an impossible speed.
As you pushed open the bedroom door, three things caught your attention. First, you felt a surprising amount of resistant as you pushed the door over a bundle of clothes you didn’t recognize. Second, you heard the bed bouncing against the wall. Third, you saw streaks of auburn hair running through you’re boyfriend’s hands as he mercilessly pounded into a woman you didn’t recognize.
Apparently, your entrance was too quiet for either of them to be interrupted. All you could manage was to slowly retreat into the living room, closing the door, but knocking into a side table.  You could hear them as they stopped moving, running to the door to investigate the noise. All you wanted was to get out of there though. Throwing your coat back over your lingerie, you grabbed your purse and keys, slamming the door shut. You didn’t even turn around when you heard him opening the door and calling your name. Whatever he had to say was not worth your time anymore.
You couldn’t get the image of the two of them in bed together out of your head. You were feeling absolutely everything at once. You felt betrayed. You felt sad. A small part of you was actually glad you had a reason to end it. It had never felt like the kind of relationship that would move on. But still, you thought you were happy with him.
But mostly, you were pissed. Rightfully so, but you had no idea where to go or what to do. Your blind adrenaline carried you to the car, and you wound up at a bar. You don’t even remember starting the car, much less driving, but you knew you needed something to drink. You ran inside, ordering tequila shots to drown the sadness, and sat at the bar. As you sat at the bar, contemplating your existence, a man walked up to sit next to you. You had your fair share of practice with this scenario. You had mastered the right mix “fuck off” and “sorry, I’m taken” to get men like this guy to back off with just a single look. But right now, all you could manage was a halfhearted grin that very clearly said “you do not want to deal with my emotional baggage right now.” It was all in the crazed look in your eyes, you were sure of it.
Nobody else came up to you while you were there. You couldn’t help but think over the past three years with him for signs that he was unfaithful. You couldn’t come up with any, the cheating bastard. He must have been pretty good at hiding the secret phone calls and date nights. But then again, you had your own secrets. Not that they would have made him feel like you do right now.
After sitting long enough to consume four shots of tequila, two vodka sodas, and one dark and stormy, reality set in. All you wanted was to curl up in a ball and scream. Or cry. You were obviously not returning to his apartment, but you couldn’t go back to your own either. There was too much there that reminded you of him. The idea of walking in there to see his sweatshirt on your couch made you feel sick. You were teetering on the edge of a full breakdown when the idea struck you. Penelope.
Penelope Garcia is your best friend. You met her at a Doctor Who convention the same day you met he who must not be named. She was there with Kevin, but they broke up a while ago. The realization that you could go to Penny’s couldn’t have come at a better time. Ha. Penny. You only call her that when you’re drunk. She’ll know what to do. You opened your phone, barely able to call up the Lyft to take you to her apartment. It’s honestly shocking you didn’t fall asleep on the seven minute drive there. Whatever, all you needed now was to get inside and forget about him.
After entering the building, you tried the elevator. Of course it was broken. It took you about thirty six minutes to hobble your way up two flights of stairs to Penny’s floor. With each step, you considered texting her to come get you, but you knew the second you saw her you would break down. You absolutely did not want to start sobbing on these stairs. Too many people could see you. Finally arriving to her door, you were exhausted. Mentally and physically drained. Knock knock knock “Penny?” Knock knock knock “Penny?” Knock knock knock “Penny?” you imitated the Big Bang Theory, knowing the small joke would make you smile, even if just for a second. When the door finally opened, you vaulted in for a hug, not even opening your eyes.
As you squeezed Penny, you finally broke out into a fit of sobs. Whisper yelling, you told her as much of the story as you could remember. “Penny, thank god. I left wo-ork early to surprise Dr-Dr-Drew for our anniversary – hiccup – but he was having s-s-se-sex with someone else…” you let out a strangled sob, not noticing how stiff Penny felt in your embrace. You buried your head into her as you continued “So I got very drunk and came here. Was he cheating on me this whole time?” You asked as your tears turned back to rage. “I even went out and bought this stupid, uncomfortable underwear to surprise him” you shout as your coat had begun to fall open again. After what felt like an hour of crying, but in reality amounted to no more than 60 seconds, you finally noticed something was odd. Two things lead you to a simple conclusion that was somehow difficult to comprehend in your drunk state.
First, Penny felt taller. Second, she was wearing converse. Upon noticing these two facts, your hands traveled up the body you were hugging until you found shoulders. Turning your head up, your eyes followed the path your hands had just taken. This series of events lead to the obvious fact that whomever you were hugging was absolutely not Penelope Garcia. Penelope was in fact not even in the foyer, but rather a very attractive, tall man with slightly curly brown hair and eyes like honey was staring back at you. And you couldn’t take your eyes off him.
 --
Reid’s POV
Spencer hadn’t actually had anything to drink since arriving at Garcia’s. No, he just drank prior to that point. Normally, he didn’t drink at all when his team got together, but this was just worth celebrating. Another serial killer was behind bars for life because of the work the team did today. Hell, even Hotch and Rossi stayed for a few hours before they left. As part of the “young crowd” on the team, he had stayed at the bar longer than the two older men before the group of you retreated to Garcia’s. Hers was the closest apartment, and everyone else wanted to keep the party going. Spencer couldn’t help but join them, not wanting to return to his empty apartment after the long day they all spent testifying.
Finishing his second glass of water, he began to get up to get more and maybe some for the group when everyone heard the knocking. The group laughed as three consecutive “Penny’s” came from the door. “Reid, can you get that since you’re already up?” Garcia asked, motioning toward the door. “It must be Y/N. She always calls me Penny when she’s drunk.” He obliged. He obviously remembered Garcia mentioning Y/N before, but he had never met her. He swung the door open, expecting a drunk friend of Garcia’s. He was not prepared, however, for said drunk friend to throw herself at him, grasp him in an alarmingly tight hug, and start sobbing. He could barely make out what you were saying through the sobs hearing “surprise Drew”, “anniversary”, “sex”, and “drunk” before you practically screamed “I even went out and bought this stupid, uncomfortable underwear to surprise him.”
It was clear you meant to be pouring her heart out to Garcia, but you hadn’t yet realized who answered the door. For the first time in his life, Dr. Spencer Reid couldn’t think of words to say as you ran your hands up his body to his shoulders. You were clearly taking in the information required to come to the conclusion that he is not in fact Penelope Garcia. As your eyes met his, all he could do was stare. He made every effort to keep his eyes level with yours, but one glace was all it took to be ingrained in his memory forever. He wouldn’t have looked, but the movement of your coat caught his eye as it revealed the exact type of surprise you had planned for whoever Drew was.
The two of you were frozen, unsure of how to proceed. You looked just like he did- a deer in the headlights. Neither of you could move. Neither of you could speak. You could both hear Garcia’s voice as she stumbled down the hallway, but it sounded distant. It wasn’t until the mystery woman broke eye contact that he backed away. Trying desperately to control the blush he were sure had made its way to his cheeks.
 --
 Y/N’s POV
The moment was broken as you felt Penny turn you towards her. The flush on your cheeks only grew as you kept your eyes on the tall man as he retreated into the living room, not having said a word. “Y/N… Y/N? Y/N!” Penny had to yell slightly to get your attention. “What happened? What are you doing here? I thought you were celebrating tonight?” She asked rapid fire. You could tell she was also a little bit drunk.
You told her everything. The words practically falling out of you as you started crying again. “Oh babe, I’m so sorry. Here, let’s get you inside.” Penny started to guide you into the living room, but you froze “Wait! Can I borrow some clothes before I go in there? I don’t need to flash anyone else right now.” You whispered. Penny laughed, “Of course! Who did you fla- ohhh. Reid.” She said, trying to hold back the giggles.
“Yes. If that is the very tall man with the perfect eyes and the completely tuggable hair.” You responded, not quite filtering your thoughts, as you were still very drunk.
“I’ll be back in a jiffy!” Penny replied, not knowing how else to respond to the fact that you are very clearly attracted to the young doctor, but also going through shit right now. She would just file away this information for later.

Welcome to Club T’s
One of my fan favorites from the old blog, enjoy:
One could look at Emily and assume her life was perfect A nice home, well off family that was well known in California.  Naturally blonde hair, a petite little figure and long legs all around a smile that could turn a man to stone. Going to movie premieres, sports events and mingling with LA bigwigs, Emily was never long without something to do. Oh dont get me wrong, Emily never complained. She loved her family, loved her friends, loved her job. She’d never complain for a second. But still something was missing.  That’s why Emily found herself where she was, in a taxi outside a new and mysterious club in downtown LA.  She stared at the door for a long time before the driver finally asked “Are you gettin out or what?” Emily came back to reality and paid the driver, and stepped out of her car as confidently as she could.  What she couldn't sell her blue dress and black heels could. She walked into the club like it was nobody’s business, and was an instant bombshell to the eligible young men at Club T’s.   What made her walk into this particular club that night? Well, to understand that, we have to go back a little bit.  Emily had a friend named Stephen, and one time not too long ago Stephen did something she couldn’t get out of her head.  He tickled her.  It wasn’t her first time being tickled, not by a longshot.  For some reason, the feeling she got when he finally stopped kept coming back to her head like a drug, needing to come forward again and refusing any lesser pleasure. She had no trouble finding a man to do anything she wanted, but for some reason this one request proved elusive to her charms.  After a brief search on the internet, she found out that club T’s was the place to find what she wanted.  It wasn’t easy to find out how to get in, the people she was here to see were very secretive.  The main club was just like any other club. The music was too loud, the drinks were too expensive and you couldn’t see or move anywhere.  After a few minutes of moving around she found the specific corner that housed the VIP section of the club, she said the codeword to the bouncer, and with a smirk he let her in.  It was the look a wolf gives a deer after a day without food, and it unsettled her. Inside, the VIP area was another world.  The clothes were different, the lights were a bit brighter, and you could hear yourself over the music.  The men were dressed in anything from suits to T-shirts while the girls were wearing some pretty revealing clothing, anything that exposed the belly, shorts, mini skirts and few of them wore heels.  They wore colored wristbands, green yellow and red.  Green was an open invitation, yellow required an ask, and red meant not to approach.  Emily had a yellow wristband, fastened around her ankle like the website advised. There was more seating space than at any normal club here, couches and chairs everywhere.  The dance floor had some people, but others were chasing each other around the floor, and in a couch by the corner a man had a captive girl in his lap.  Her hands were bound and her feet were in his lap.  As he grabbed the toe of her sock, her bound hands came up to her face to conceal her smile and she shook her head.  He grinned evilly and slowly pulled the sock off, revealing her bare foot. At the edges of the dance floor were a few suspended cages, each with a girl inside and a person outside sticking a feather duster in.  Emily asked the bartender “What’s all that about?”  A cute redhead in a black corset said “Those girls work here.  The customers pay to use the feather dusters for a time.  They can also pay to remove clothing or lower the cages.  It breaks the ice for the newcomers.  Speaking of, is this your first time?” “Why yes” said Emily looking around. “Is this actually for real?” The bartender, whose nametag read “Sam” said “It sure is.  I can lock you in that cage if you’re too nervous to get started on your own?”  Emily blushed, and suddenly a voice came from behind her that said smoothly “Sam, hasn’t your boss told you not to mess with the new talent? Or do I have to tickle you for your tips again?” Sam blushed now, and backed towards the liquor shelf nervously.  Emily asked the tall, suit clad stranger “What?”  He said “Oh you haven’t heard? If you find their service in any way lacking, you have to give them the oppurtunity to get their tips tickled back into them.  That’s why she wears a corset, her pits are her worst spot.”  She hissed “Damon!” So you weren't kidding on the website” Emily asked. “This really is a tickle club.” Damon said “Oh yes, but if you want to see come by when Sam brings my bottle of Dom.  She needs a good tickling to earn her tips back after that hiss…”  Sam gulped.  She’d done it now.  Damon slapped down a 20 and said “Whatever the lady likes is on me.” Sam fixed Emily a drink and grabbed a champagne bottle, but Emily hesitated as Sam left.  Sam looked over her shoulder and said “You comin? This is what you wanted right?”  Emily finished her liquid courage, and followed Sam to a door labelled “Barefoot Room”  Upon entering, Sam said “It’s quite literal, no shoes allowed inside.”  Sam quickly kicked off her pumps and went inside, and Emily removed her peep toed heels to join her. “You learn quickly Emily” Damon smiled as he smiled at Emilys little feet as she flexed her toes “Im just amazed” Emily replied blushing as she felt Damon's gaze on her toes “Theres nothing to feel scared about Emily" Damon smiled as he took a sip of his drink. “so tell me what brings you here”” Emily took a deep breath, and then she started “It all started when my friend Stephen tickled my feet a few months ago.  It felt...well I guess how a normal person feels being tickled.  Sure, the laughing was fun but when it was happening I just wanted him to stop after a few seconds...afterwards I couldn’t get it out of my head.  I tried forgetting it, distracting myself.  Anytime I was alone with my thoughts, I thought of that sensation and how badly I wanted it back.  So I found this place...and here I am.” “And here you are.” Damon said.  He saw Emily look down nervously and said “Emily, come sit by me.”  She came and sat down next to him hesitantly, and drew her feet behind her knees, where Damon couldn’t see them.  It was all she could do not to blush.  He asked her “Sam needs to be tickled if she wants her tips from me, where should she be tickled?” “Her underarms” Emily replied without hesitation.  Sam shut her eyes and raised her arms, beginning to breathe heavily.  She begged “Please be gentle.” Damon looked and raised an eyebrow “you answered that quickly for a newbie; I think we may have a little sadist here.  Sam, I think we should let your new friend here do the honors” Emily looked nervous again, and said “You want me to tickle her?”  Damon nodded silently and said “If you'd prefer I can tickle her.  The whole time you watch her suffer knowing that it's coming for you next…” She was up in an instant, and facing Sam directly.  Sam felt her breathe and winced, that gave Emily an inexplicable pleasure.  She pounced. Emily dug her nails into Sam’s underarms, and Damon smirked as she screamed.  Sam was able to hold her arms up for a few seconds, but within 15 seconds they came down reflexively.  Sam laughed like crazy but Emily wouldn't let up.  Sam tried to turn away, but Emily kept at it, and pulled Sam closer. The punishment became a wrestling match soon as the girls came to the ground, with Emily straddling her hips.  Emily leaned forward and pinned the poor bartender’s wrists over her head and blew on her underarms, which drove sam into a mad fit of giggles.  She begged “HEHEHEHE Stop teasing!” Emily couldn't tell you why she said this, but she shouted “This is club tease!”  Before she could sink her nails back into Sam’s smooth hollows, Emily burst out laughing “HAHAHAHAHA!” And lost her grip. Sam scrambled out from under her, and went to Damon, who was holding Emily’s ankle, with his other hand gently stroking her sole.  She giggled gently with each stroke of his hands.  He patted Sam on the butt and said “That’s enough sweetie.  Call me when you get off work.  For now I have some soft, pretty feet to break in.” This comment made Emily blush, and wiggle her baby blue toes.  As Sam walked out of the room and grabbed her shoes, Emily looked down, anticipating the tickling.  The tickling was slow, methodical.  He was really tickling her brain more than her sole.  Reminding her that he could do what he want, control her body against her will.  He could make her laugh whenever he pleased.  All it took was a foot and a finger.  He had the finger, and the foot may as well have been a plaything of his.  It was in his grasp and she wasn’t getting it out. Emily remained on all fours(or threes, not counting the foot that belonged to Damon at the moment), and giggled when Damon wanted her to, otherwise she just accepted the breaks and caught her breath.  Sometimes she would look back at Damon, nearly melting him with that forced smile.  Other times she looked away and tried to just take it. During a break, Damon rubbed her sole with his palm and commented “I see you took the website’s advice and got a pedicure.  How recently?”  Emily giggled “A couple hours ago hehehe.”  she heard Damon inhale deeply and felt his lips rub along her sole now. His lips tickled ever so slightly. She giggled “hehehehe are you smelling my foot?” She read many of the men here also had foot fetishes, but never expected to find herself here tonight… He replied “You used a vanilla scented lotion.  It’s my favorite.”   “EEP!” She squealed, something had pinched the ball of her foot, and one look back at Damon licking his lips told the whole story.  Could she really drive him so crazy with just her feet? This could add some fun to the tickling...but before she could finish that thought, her mind commanded her to laugh again. Emily fell flat on her belly as she felt a warm, wet sensation streak across her arch.  She turned her head to the side to release peals of laughter, and started pounding the carpet with her fist.  If Damon’s finger was mean, his tongue was just cruel.  Emily was at once suffering and feeling an indescribable ecstasy.  All she could do to cope was laugh, and between breaths beg “Hahahaha! Stahahahahap!” Emily got herself a momentary respite from Damon’s tongue, but only because he needed it to taunt her.  His fingers returned to gently stroking her arches as he taunted “Oh you don’t want this to stop.  If you did you’d pull your foot away.  Look.”  Emily flipped over and saw that his hand was open, only cupping her heel.  He tickled with all his fingers slowly, and she reflexively pulled back a few inches, then paused. Emily hesitated a few seconds, it tickled so bad but there was just nothing like it.  Her foot slowly slid back into his grip, and his hand closed around her ankle.  She gasped, what had she done? Damon taunted “See? I knew you liked it!” And he tickled her sole all over again with his fingers, making her laugh even louder, wondering why she gave her foot to him.  He lifted her foot up to his mouth, but there was resistance from her tight little dress.  Damon lowered her foot and said “Emily, your dress is lovely but if you want to have more fun, it may be best to change.” Emily blushed again and said “I don't have a change of clothes.”  Damon began stroking her instep and commented “Not to worry.  There is a private changing room in here with spare clothes, better for our activities.”  Damon helped her up, and opened a wall panel that led to a cozy changing room. Emily removed her dress and placed it on a hanger, then found a pair of little pink shorts and a white tshirt to put on.  The shirt was awfully short, and only came down to her ribs, leaving her midriff vulnerable.  The shorts were quite short, revealing her long tanned legs. She emerged a little sheepishly, but Damon gushed over her, making her blush for the umpteenth time tonight.  She came up to the couch where he sat and requested “Where do you want me?”  She felt his eyes combing every inch of exposed skin, searching for a spot to make her squeal.  She felt uneasy, but exhilarated. Damon grabbed her by the hand and sat her on the couch next to him.  He draped her legs over his...and once she breathed out he lobster clawed her knees.  Emily shrieked, breaking down in helpless laughter as she tried to sit up and reach his hands. After a few moments of squeezing her legs and knees, Damon began to gently scribble his fingertips all along her thighs and up towards her hips.  Emily’s laughter went up in pitch as Damon reached her hips and pinched, and he licked his lips looking at that bare midriff. Damon gave Emily a break to catch her breath, and breathing heavily she sighed “hehehe that was fun.”  Damon had an evil smirk on his face, she asked him “What is that look for?”  Damon said “I’m going to have that cute tummy of yours next.  But I’m going to give you a choice, my tongue or my hands?”  Emily’s eyes bugged out, and she couldn’t possibly choose between tortures for a moment.  She thought about her feet, and his tongue was much worse there.  She answered “Hands.” Damon smirked, had she chosen wrong? What was he playing at?  She didn’t have time to think any further as ten fingers began wiggling along her midriff, and her tummy exploded with ticklish sensations.  She let out a loud belly laugh, and cursed as her hands wanted nothing more than to seize his and make it stop.  Despite this desperate need, her mind would not allow them, making them twitch up and down her sides in a comical fashion.  The game changed utterly when Damon managed to wiggle a finger into her navel, making Emily scream like a banshee before breaking down in frantic laughter.  She tried to get him off of there, but her hands were swatted away by his free hand.  This was almost as bad as her toes, or that tongue! Maybe she should have let him use his tongue after all… After a minute or so of her navel being explored and prodded, Emily couldn’t take anymore.  Her begs became more desperate, and Damon heard it in her voice.  She cried loudly “Uncle! Hahahahahaha! Please! Mercy! Hahahaha!”  Damon stopped rather quickly, but Emily didn’t manage to stop giggling for another minute.  He rubbed her belly during this time, and at last she recovered.  She propped herself up on her elbows saying “That was wicked...I’ve never felt anything like it before.”  Damon smirked, and said “I bet not.” Before they could say anything else, a blonde woman and a brunette with golden brown hair came into the room dancing with each other, kicking their shoes off as they entered.  They plopped on the couch opposite Damon and Emily.  The blonde said “I told you if we danced Damon would get us a snack!”  Emily covered her face nervously as she blushed like a teenager, and would have curled into a ball had Damon not held her knees.  The brunette asked “Who’s the tickle toy?”  Damon said evenly “Girls, this is Emily.  Emily, that is Shay, and Blair.  Two tickle slaves of mine, who need to remember what happens when they don’t use their manners.” Damon continued “Emily is new, and I think she has had enough for one night.  Blair, why don’t you tie Shay’s arms over her head?”  They got to work, enjoying themselves and clearly under the influence a bit.  Emily asked “So what, just like that we’re done?”  Damon smirked and said “For tonight, after I do one quick thing.  If you want another session I’ll see to it that you can contact me.  Sit tight.”  Damon got up and tested Shay’s bonds, who was standing on her tiptoes in the middle of the room, suspended from a chain.  Damon produced two more cuffs and said “Your turn Blair.”  She giggled as she assumed position for her restraints. Once they were restrained Damon instructed Emily “Give me your sole” holding his hand out.  She placed an ankle in his hand, and he produced a pen.  He slowly and painstakingly wrote something on Emily’s sole, but she couldn’t tell.  All she could do was laugh and scream until he finished.  It felt like an eternity of that ball point pen stroking her arches, but it was bliss for her.  When he finally finished, he pecked each of her soles goodnight and she left for the evening.  She inspected her sole before putting her shoes back on, and it read Damon’s number and address.

The Covenant: Presents and Kisses
Tumblr media
Reid Garwin x Reader
Word Count: 1,858
Summary: It’s reader’s birthday and Reid has some surprises up his sleeve. Dedicated to the lovely @saviorsong. Happy Birthday!
The café was a small, single room operation so sound from both the dining area and the kitchen traveled throughout. And everyone heard when your boyfriend came out of the bathroom, throwing the door open with such force that a bang rang out from where it hit the wall.
The poor barista almost dropped a drink they were making out of surprise.
“Babe, that was the biggest shit I’ve taken this month,” Reid practically shouted as he made his way back to the table.
You didn’t bother to acknowledge that particular comment and kept your attention on Tyler who had also tagged along with you guys. It was better to not entertain poop talk seeing as how you were in public.
“Babe! Did you hear what I said?”
“I think everyone did,” you replied pointedly. He dropped into his chair, hands clutching at his stomach.
You continued chatting with Tyler about a class you were taking and Reid still kept fidgeting and groaning. He was normally dramatic but he was really hamming it up.
You turned to him with a raised brow. That was all it took for him to increase his complaining.
“I think it was the food. It’s gotta be food poisoning, I feel so sick.”
“But we ate from the same plate.”
A glance at the table showed a shared plate that had long been eaten with not a drop of sauce left on the it after you both had all but cleaned the dish. If he actually had food poisoning, shouldn’t you be feeling it too? Your stomach felt perfectly fine, if not satisfied.
“Everyone reacts differently to these things, you know.”
Tyler nodded seriously, corroborating Reid’s claim. Those two were thicker than thieves, always ready to back each other up.
“No telling how bad this could get. I’m gonna head home but you should stay, Ty can hang out with you,” he said.
“Really?” Your tone was colored with incredulously. “Today of all days?”
He completely ignored that and bent down for a kiss. You were extremely tempted to turn away but ended up giving in. Reid may be an idiot, but he was your idiot. Keeping up with the sick-as-a-dog routine, he gingerly hobbled out of the café.
And since he was your idiot, you knew something was definitely up. You didn’t claim to be the smartest person around but Reid wasn’t exactly subtle.
Immediately, your attention turned towards Tyler. If one was plotting, then the other would know.
The brunette raised his hands as if to keep things peaceful. “Okay, okay. Don’t be upset.”
“It’s my birthday and my man just ran out under suspicious circumstances. I have every right to be annoyed.”
“Exactly! You’re the reason why he left!” He paused for an awkward second. “Wow. That came out totally wrong. What I mean is that he’s setting up something nice for you.”
“He is?” you asked suddenly touched.
Reid was a romantic sort. Maybe not always so smooth about it, but a romantic nonetheless. And he did do things for you often, even if a good number of things were in an attempt to apologize for something stupid he did, but he had never done a birthday surprise.
Well, not one where he had kept it a surprise for this long. Normally he couldn’t keep quiet about his plans so you were a bit impressed that you hadn’t noticed until his terrible acting just then.
Tyler nodded again, this time in excitement. “Yep. He needs a few hours to get it ready though…we can either stay here or walk around. Your birthday, your choice.”
His methods may be, well, unconventional, but your heart beat a little faster knowing he was planning something. Your mind wandered, thinking up various possibilities. Two hours couldn’t go by fast enough.
***
It ended up being close to six o’clock before you returned home.
You closed the door gently and toed your shoes off. The quietness seemed that much thicker with anticipation weighing heavily.
A trail of rose petals wound around the living room and trailed down the hallway, presumably to the bedroom, but you got distracted by a tantalizing aroma.
You followed that into the kitchen instead and found a skillet filled with something delicious. Other bowls with other fantastic side dishes were arranged randomly around it on the countertops.
And then you noticed the cake. Unlike the others, the cake was displayed on the table, a package of candles lying next to it. You walked closer to get a better view and couldn’t the grin hat spread across your face.
Clearly, he had made the cake himself. Not that that was off-putting to you in any way. It was really quite cute.
He had made a small two-layer cake which in of itself didn’t look too bad. The sides were not traditionally frosted so, the parts that were visible, you could see that the shape and the softness looked about right. Kind of.
In lieu of normal frosting, he had attempted to coat them with a crumb frosting of some sort. Despite his best effort, the crumbs didn’t hadn’t spread evenly with some parts having barely any and others having too much.
It looked like he also had issues with the frosting on top. You guessed that he had tried to apply it while the cake was still warm because it was thinner than it should have been, almost glaze-like. Some had even started to leak over the sides before it was cool enough to harden up again.
Even with flaws, it was still the sweetest, frumpiest birthday cake you could ever remember someone making for you.
You stuck out a finger trying to taste the crumb coat when you felt a sharp smack to your ass.
“Oww!” Rubbing it, you saw Reid standing behind you with a towel in his hand. “Did you really just spank me with a towel?”
“It’s not time for cake yet,” he said. He was shirtless, tattoos on display, baggy cargo pants riding low on his hips. There was a hint of tiredness in his eyes but it was mostly irritation. “This part was for last. You were supposed to follow the roses first.”
Ah. He was irritated that you messed up the plan. But you were so excited to see what else he had in store that you didn’t answer back with a sharp quip of your own. “Then lead the way.”
With a sigh, he put his hands on your shoulders and walked you out of the kitchen. His grip was gentle though so you knew he wasn’t seriously frustrated with you.
The path of rose petals came back into view and you realized they were from a real flower and not plastic. A warm feeling spread through you and it only grew the closer the closer the path drew you to the bedroom. Reid stayed just behind you the whole way, your gentle guide.
“The flowers are beautiful, Reid.”
“I know. And a normal person would’ve followed them from the start.”
“Sorry,” you giggled. “The food all looked really good though. Three Michelin stars across the board.”
“Yeah, yeah. Just open the door, would ya?”
You pushed the door with your fingers, thoughts racing. What were you going to find? That fancy stationary set you’d been eyeing online? A fluffy, tail-wagging puppy? A chest of kinky toys?
With Reid it could any one of the three. Maybe even all three.
Tons of balloons were inflated and rolling around the floor, so much so that you had to kick a few out of the way to be able to step in. Even a birthday banner hung over the bed when he had thumbtacked it into the wall.
But the gift was unmistakable.
The large woven basket was sitting on the dresser, fibers dyed your favorite color was hard to miss.
Then came the stuff that was practically overflowing from said basket. You rummaged through it like a old woman at a yard sale, pulling out something new with every handful.
Jewelry. A soft blanket. Cans of your favorite type of drink. Hand painted ceramics. Some hard cover additions you’d been meaning to add to your personal library. New head phones. Dozens of origami creatures. A tee from your favorite team. Coffee mugs and several blends of beans. Hand-held tools  to replace your old ones with. And not only a stationary set but a wax letter stamp seal as well.
And everything from the basket to the last gift followed the same theme: it was all in your favorite color.
You jumped into his arms and he caught you. “I’m—this is…this is…”
“What?” he said, his breath tickling your ear and fingers gripping your thighs tightly. “Impressive? Inspiring? The best goddamn gift you’ve ever seen?”
“Touching,” you whispered.
You couldn’t see it, but you could sense the soft expression on his face.
“How did you even manage to find some of this stuff in this color?”
“It wasn’t easy, let me tell you…”
He went on explaining how he started with the just the stationary (you were right and he had noticed you looking at it) in your favorite color.
Then he added the headphones, also in your favorite color.
Then he’d painted the ceramic pieces himself.
Eventually thinking up even more potential presents to get, he’d come up with the idea to do everything in that color. The tools were the hardest but he was very proud that he’d been able to pull it off with the help of a custom order from a local business.
“This is super touching. Thanks for putting in this much thought and effort,” you said finally lifting your head up to give him a kiss.
It was meant to be a quick peck but Reid’s lips followed yours when you tried to pull back, turning it into something more passionate. He even managed to lick his way into your mouth before you finally parted, panting for air.
“Mmm,” he breathed, lips back on yours. “You’re eager to get to the next event.”
You made a confused sound in your throat which he swallowed. One of his hands traveled up your leg and over your hip to come to a rest on your lower back. He turned you and that’s when you noticed the bed.
The comforter was already pulled slightly down and more rose petals were scattered all around. He laid you down on the mattress and prowled up your body. The petals were even more fragrant now that you were closer to them.
“What’s the next event?” you asked coyly although it wasn’t hard to guess.
“One kiss for every year you’ve been alive,” he said with a cocked smile. “It was either that many kisses or that many orgasms—I figured all those orgasms might be too much for you though.”
You bit his bottom lip and snuck your fingers under the waistband of his cargo pants suggestively. “How about both?”
He watched in rapture as you removed your shirt, eyes glued to your chest.
“Anything for you, babe. Happy Birthday.”
_______________
Yay! Thanks for reading. I hope this was alright.
In my mind, Reid is the type of romantic to make you things, hence the food, origami, and ceramics. But sensual time will also be included just because.
Honestly, he probably heard what Caleb did for his s/o and, in typical competitive fashion, decided he could do better. He roped in Tyler to keep reader distracted and spent a few hours cooking, decorating, and assembling the massive personalized gift basket.
They likely did reach fulfill the birthday kiss count but how many orgasms they managed to achieve is up to your imagination.

Our Little Secret: Part Seven - A.R.
Tumblr media
Word count: 4883 Summary: Arvin has to avenge Lenora but has to see y/n before he leaves.
-
WARNINGS: SMUT, ORAL (fem recv), DIRTY TALK (mild), EXHIBITIONISM (kinda? car sex basically). a LOT of emotions.
TW: mentions of guns, the preacher being the horrific person he is
It was a week later and probably the worst week of my life. I was ultimately grounded: not being able to go to cheer practice, not being able to leave the house and of course, not being able to see Arvin. I would still cook and bake for the Russell's but I'd just drop it off at the door or give it to Earskell outside.
Daddy was getting worse and school was getting more stressful due to exams coming up. Ma and I were not talking much. Only statements, really. Nothing more, nothing less.
I missed Arvin. But I was angry at him and confused about the previous week and why he acted like that. He just gave up, just like that. He has always been so protective of me but in that situation he left me with the wolves.
And on top of all of that, I was dealing with grief: an emotion I had never experienced before. Some days I felt numb and all I wanted to do was go to Arvin about it but I couldn't. And I was still dumbfounded at the fact she was pregnant and I had no idea. Lenora had somehow had sex and not told me. Maybe she didn't even know she was pregnant.
I often sat at my desk, pencil twirling in my fingers, thinking and wondering and daydreaming about him; when really I should be studying.
What was he doing? Did he miss me? Was he planning on seeing me again?
I could only wonder what he'd be doing at this moment...
Arvin's POV
I watched from the drivers seat, slumped with my cap low.
Reverend Teagardin had just gotten home from his rendezvous in the woods with the Reaster girl and was now greeting his wife. I saw him begin to take his suit jacket and tie off while gesturing for her to undress, too.
I clenched my jaw watching him. He undressed down to his shirt and socks, sitting proudly and smugly on his armchair like he owned the place. Like he owned her.
She sauntered up to him in her nightdress and dropped to the floor, hands on his thighs. I watched as he pushed her down fully on him.
I felt nauseas. I turned away and opened the window to get some air. I didn't like what I was doing but I had to do it. For Lenora.
After I'd seen enough, I drove home in silence. I didn't listen to the radio anymore. Just didn't feel right without y/n.
Despite the planning, the darkness and the grief going on in my life, the only thing that kept me going was the fact I might see y/n soon. But even then, I don't know if she'd even want to talk to me.
I had to leave to protect her and her parents. I understood them. I was the bad guy and she was the good girl and that's how it always was and always will be. There's no changing that.
When I got to the house, Earskell was sitting on the porch, a cigarette in his mouth
"You're late." He stated as I walked towards him.
"Yeah." I sighed.
I took my hat and jacket off then sat down next to him.
We sat in silence but it was far from that in my head.
I needed to leave tonight. But I had to see y/n. And I had to say some sort of goodbye.
But when I opened my mouth to say something, I closed it again. I wanted so bad to say goodbye but they'd be better off knowing nothing if the law came looking for me.
"Uncle...you have to be good to Grandma,"
I felt my eyes tear up. Thankfully it was dark so he couldn't see.
"She's hardly been out of bed since the funeral and without y/n here, she ain't been doin' good."
"I know." Earskell clenched his jaw.
"Grandma needs you, alright?"
He turned to me and nodded. But he looked longer than usual. It was almost like he knew.
I waited outside until Earskell went to bed. I walked in behind him and stood in the quiet house, my foot tapping the floor in thought.
If I was going to do it, it had to be now.
I collected my thoughts and quietly went into my room, packing a bag of basic clothes. My heart raced as I moved. Was I really doing this?
I stood and rubbed my hands over my face. I was crazy. What was I thinking? I sighed and sat on the edge of my bed, looking up at the art on the wall.
I never liked that drawing. It haunted me. Everything about this house and this town haunted me. Everything except from y/n.
I reached under my bed and pulled out an old wooden box. I sat it on my bed side table and opened it.
My daddy's old gun sat in the middle, accompanied by some bullets.
I gulped, staring at the weapon for a few moments before picking it up and loading it with shaky hands.
I placed it in my bag and left my room. I had every intent just to go. In the dead of night, just leave. But as I passed Grandma's room, I knew I had to write her. So I did. I quickly got out a pen and paper and wrote her a goodbye letter.
Dear Grandma, I'm writing to you because I cannot say goodbye to your face. I love you and I will always remember the things you have done for me. What I'm about to do, I do because I have to, not because I want to. Please do not try and find me. Love your grandson, Arvin.
I rolled it and sat it in a tin can. I quietly opened her bedroom door and tip-toed in, gently placing it on her bedside table. I looked at her for a few moments and then left, heading out her room, down the hall and out the front door. I got into the car, throwing my bag in the back and driving off.
It was 2 o'clock in the morning so I wouldn't expect y/n's parents to be awake. I drove up the drive of her house, nerves and adrenaline rushing through me. I parked before the gate and hopped out. There were no lights on except from one. The front left window on the second story. y/n's room.
I smiled and walked carefully along the gravel, trying not to be too loud. I picked up a few of the small gravel stones in my hand and grinned up at her window.
I aimed and threw a stone. It hit her window perfectly. I smiled, the realisation that I might see her dawning on me. I threw another, and another, and another. I was about to throw yet another until she pulled her window up.
She peeped her head out the window and looked down in shock.
"Arvin, what the hell?!" She whisper-shouted.
"y/n! Come down, please." I dropped the stones, wiping my hands on my jeans.
She looked behind her and I could see her hair pulled back messily. She must have been lying in bed.
"I can't!" She whispered.
"y/n, I really need to see you."
She scoffed, "Maybe you shouldn't have been such an asshole and I might have come down."
I hung my head, "I'm sorry, I really am. I was just trying to protect you-"
"Protect me?!" She hissed.
"Can you just come down and we can talk about this? Please?" I clasped my hands together.
She hesitated, looking at me to her door and then back at me again.
"Wait in the car I'll be there soon." She whispered before shutting the window.
I grinned and silently celebrated, returning back to the car to wait on her. I bit my lip nervously, my hands gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white.
But soon a figure caught my eye. I saw y/n exit her house and close the door carefully. She checked her surroundings before jogging over to the car. She was in a white blouse with a white A-line skirt. Her hair was intricately pleated and tied with a white silk ribbon. She looked ethereal as I opened the door for her and she got in. She didn't wear any makeup so I could see her freckles that peppered across her skin and her natural glow in the moonlight.
"Hi." She gulped nervously.
"Hey...d'you wanna go to the lake?" I asked.
"Sure." She nodded.
I pulled out and drove away and onto the familiar road we took to go to our spot.
"So, y/n I just-"
"I recommend we talk when we get there because if I scream at you and we get into an accident, that's my fault." She stated, not taking her eyes off the road.
I gulped, "Okay."
We drove in silence down the quiet roads. No one was out except from travellers. We finally reached the lake and I parked just beside it.
It looked picturesque; the moonlight shining onto the river making it gleam at the stars and the trees were full and lush.
Reader's POV
We sat in silence for a few moments. It was awkward and tension filled the air. I had snuck out and risked getting grounded again for this.
"Arvin, why am I here?" I finally asked, arms folding in front of my chest.
"Just to see you. I needed to see you." He spoke quietly.
I felt all the emotions come back to me but I didn't have enough energy to shout at him.
"Why did you leave? Why did you do that?" I asked.
He sighed, "I was protecting you."
I rolled my eyes, "Protecting me? Protecting me from what?"
"From your parents kicking you out or for them hating you for the rest of your life because you wasted it on me." He snapped.
"Wasted? You think that if we were together it would waste my life?" I turned to him fully.
He lay his head back, "I'm not like you, y/n. I'm not rich, I don't live in a fancy house, I don't work in some office job. I wouldn't be able to give you what you wanted and that's why your parents don't like me and I understand that."
I spluttered then scoffed at his negative attitude.
"Arvin, you are you and that is all I want." I felt tears spring into my eyes.
He turned his head to look at me.
"I don't need a fancy house or tons of money..." I shook my head and reached over to take his hand.
"But I do need you." I took his hand to my lips and pressed kisses onto his skin.
He watched me and I could see him tear up.
"I can't ruin your life like this." He shook his head.
"You are not ruinin' my life, Arvin. You're doin' everything but that. My life is miserable without you." I smiled slightly.
He moved his hand from mine and traced his calloused hand over my cheek, then pushing some stray hairs behind before cupping my face. His thumb stroked my skin softly as a tear rolled down his face.
"Oh, Arvin," I exhaled in sympathy.
"I'm already causin' trouble. I snuck you out at two o'clock in the mornin' I mean, that's not very responsible is it?"
I chuckled, "We're still teenagers, Arvin. We can still have fun. We don't need to be responsible all the time."
He slightly smiled, looking at my lips then to my eyes.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked in a whisper.
I nodded, "Kiss me, Arvin."
He brought his lips to mine as I rested my hand on top of his. Our lips touched and it was as if nothing had happened and we were back to normal. It was soft and sweet, our lips moving in sync like we had done this a million times before. He slid his tongue into my mouth and I hummed at the taste of him. He moved his hand from my face to my waist and squeezed my skin. I took the initiative and crawled onto his lap.
It was a little awkward with my skirt but a chuckle and a giggle we resumed, lips clashing together in a new passion. Our tongues pushed and swirled in each other's mouths, exploring as much as we could.
His lips travelled to my neck and he sucked and licked over my skin. I moaned, threading my finger through his hair as I leaned back, allowing him more access to my neck. He kept going, kissing the spot on my neck he already knew I liked. I pulled him as close to me as possible and rolled my hips in reaction.
I moaned in pleasure and confusion. Arvin hesitated for a moment but when I experimentally rolled my hips again, he held them tighter and kissed my neck with more fervour.
I picked up a rhythm, grinding my hips down onto Arvin's jeans. The friction between my pants and his jeans sent pleasure coursing through me.
"Does that feel good?" Arvin asked even though he knew my answer.
"Feels so good," I moaned.
He helped my hips move faster on him and we stopped kissing in concentration. I tugged his hair in my fingers, closing my eyes to enjoy the unexpected pleasure. I paused to rip Arvin's jacket from his shoulders and to take his shirt off. He complied, lifting his arms and then shaking his hair back into place once it was off.
"Back seat." I mumbled breathlessly as I kissed his lips.
"You sure?" He asked in the same manner.
"Please." I whimpered.
We pulled away and I got off of him, shedding of my blouse and skirt on the passengers seat before getting into the back seat and lying down. Arvin removed his jeans awkwardly but then climbed on top of me relatively easily.
I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck as he dipped down to meet my lips again. His slid down my sides, cupping and groping my breasts covered by my bra. I gasped, arching up into him. He smirked at my reaction and snaked his hand around my back, unclipping it with ease and then throwing it in the front seat.
He palmed my boob with one hand while the other cupped my face, our lips sloppily kissing one another.
He started to kiss my jaw, my neck and then went further, leaving wet, open-mouthed kisses down my breasts, my stomach and he stopped at my panties. He hooked his fingers under the waistband and I lifted my hips to help him take them off. He slid them off and discarded them.
I furrowed my brows in confusion when he didn't come back up to face me again. Instead, he lifted my legs and readjusted himself between my legs. I suddenly felt self-conscious as he was face-to-face with my crotch.
"Arvin, what're you-"
"Tell me if you want me to stop, baby." He said lowly before dipping his head between my thighs.
I gasped and gripped his hair instinctively as he licked my skin from my thigh to my core.
"Arvin," I moaned, his breath fanning over my core.
He looked up at me with his dark, lustful eyes as he licked a strip from my entrance to my clit. I bucked my hips onto him in shock and pleasure.
I had never even heard of this. I knew people had sex. But I didn't realise this was a part of it.
"Taste so good, baby." He mumbled.
His tongue flicked upwards on my clit and gained a steady pace. I held his head tightly, my fingers messing up his hair. I had never felt such pleasure before. His hands held my thighs but I noticed when one of them slipped from my skin.
I looked down at him and whimpered at the sight of him between my legs, tongue working against my clit expertly.
"Feels so good- oh my god!"
He slipped a finger into my entrance with ease, curling up to find my spot.
"Shit! Yes!" I arched my back, removing a hand from his hair to grip onto the back of the seat for some stability.
The duo of his tongue and his fingers was nearly too much for me to handle. Nearly. He kept going, never halting and praising me through it.
"Look so amazing, baby. Feel so good. Taste so sweet, darlin'."
"Arvin, I'm so close." I choked, feeling the same knot form in my stomach.
"Go on, baby. Come for me."
I held his hair and pushed him further into me as I felt my high approaching. He groaned as I chased my high, feeling myself clench around his fingers. His tongue never stopped and neither did his fingers as I came. I moaned loudly, my free hand trying to grip onto anything around me. My high washed over me euphorically, his mouth and fingers still riding me through it.
I pushed his head back a little when I became sensitive to his touch and he pulled away and lifted me off my back and swiftly onto his lap. I was still hazy but he kissed me softly, tucking some hair behind my ear.
"You did so good, baby." He uttered against my lips.
"That was...so good." I sighed in satisfaction.
"D'you wanna feel me?" He asked lowly.
I bit my lip and nodded, "Yes. God, please."
He smirked and lifted me up slightly with one arm as his other pulled his underwear down to his knees and he shrugged them off. I gulped at the sight of him again. He went to touch himself but I beat him to it, wrapping my hand around his member.
His breath hitched in his throat and he rested his hand on my thighs as I pumped my hand up and down, my thumb brushing over his tip each time.
I lifted off him and swiped his tip through my folds and then eased myself onto him. We both moaned as I sank down on him, bottoming out almost immediately because I was so wet.
"So tight, darlin', fuck." He groaned.
I moved up and down on him, picking the speed up relatively quickly.
Soon enough we were both panting, moaning messes. I bounced on him mercilessly, the sound of skin slapping filled the fogged car and I gripped onto his shoulder with one hand and the inside handle on the door with the other. Arvin's hands stayed on my waist, helping me to move up and down on him.
"Fuck, it feels so good. You feel so good, Arv." I moaned.
"So good for me, y/n. So fuckin' good." He leaned forward and encased my lips in a wet kiss before flipping me onto my back.
I gasped and then moaned in upmost pleasure as he pulled out and pushed back into me, his member hitting deep within me.
He dipped his head down to my neck and I clambered at his back, leaving scratch marks over him.
He thrusted into me relentlessly and I wrapped my ankles around him, bringing him as close to me as possible. Suddenly he shifted me down slightly and I moaned as his member continuously brushed against my spot.
"Yes! Right there, fuck!" I moaned, gripping onto him with dear life.
He continued, his grunts and moans filling my ears. I gripped his hair with one hand and his back with the other.
"Fuck, I love you so much." He said into my skin.
My heart fluttered, "I love you too. So much."
"You gonna come for me? Gonna come a second time for me? Good girl."
His words coaxed me into my second high. I arched my back and moaned louder than I should have but it felt too good. I held him as close to me as possible as he thrusted into me, every brush making my orgasm more intense.
"Fuck- baby, I'm gonna come." He groaned.
I released my legs from his waist and he pulled out of me, leaving me feeling empty. I replaced his hand quickly and pumped him on top of my core. He watched with an agape mouth, pleasure consuming him as he finished. He painted all over my lower stomach but I didn't mind. I enjoyed watching him finish. I loved the fact I made him finish.
"Shit," He crashed next to me, panting.
We sat listening to each others breathing before he sat up and grabbed a handkerchief from his jacket pocket. I giggled as he brushed it over my skin, cleaning me up softly, mindful of the fact I was still sensitive.
He reached behind the seats and retrieved a blanket we'd often use for cold nights.
"I'll put the radio on." I smiled.
I reached forward and turned on the radio. A song finished and I sat back. Arvin had found a comfortable position in the corner and tapped next to him. I smiled and sat where he gestured, both of us putting our feet up and relaxing into each other.
'I'll Never Smile Again' by Frank Sinatra came on the radio and I nuzzled into Arvin's bare chest.
(PLAY NOW!)
Arvin's POV
"I love this song." She sighed sweetly.
I gulped, knowing that this song would now have a whole new meaning to her after this conversation. In fact, it was pretty fitting.
"y/n, I gotta tell you somethin' that might seem crazy and horrible but..." I spoke nervously and I could already feel the lump beginning to form in my throat.
She squeezed me a little, "What is it?"
I took a few deep breaths, gathering my thoughts and what I was about to tell her.
"I needed to see you tonight because...because I'm leavin'. Tonight."
She paused and then sat up, holding her half of the blanket over her chest.
"What the hell are you talkin' about?"
I gulped, "I have to do somethin' and I can't be here anymore."
"What d'you have to do, Arvin?" She asked, concern lacing her voice.
I looked into her eyes, "I need to avenge Lenora." I said truthfully.
I think she immediately knew what I meant. She stopped and stared at me with the same blank expression for nearly a whole minute.
"y/n please say somethin'."
"I uh...I don't know who you're gonna hurt. But do you really need to?" She asked.
I nodded, "I have to. I won't be able to rest until I do."
Her chin began to quiver, "But I need you."
She broke into a sob and I brought her close to me, holding her head to my chest and rubbing her back soothingly.
"You will be just fine without me, y/n. I know you will."
"How can I live my life knowin' you might be out there. Or what if you die, Arvin?! What will I do?!" She sat up, facing me, tears staining her once glowing face.
I cupped her face and wiped her tears away, "I love you. And I will always love you, y/n. You need to know that. If I could, I would stay with you."
She cried into my hands and I felt myself begin to break.
"I would stay with you. I'd marry you, I'd have kids with you and get a house with you. I'd spend the rest of my life with you if I could, y/n. But I can't." I felt tears fall down my face.
She shook her reddened face in my palms, "I can't go on without you, Arvin."
"Hey, yes you can." I stated.
"You will be just fine. You're startin' college after the summer and you'll be gettin' a job, a life."
"Without you." She cried.
"I know. I'm so sorry it has to be like this, y/n."
She looked at me, "I'm sorry, too."
I brought her back into me and we sunk into our original position. We were both still crying and we both knew.
"Keep close with Grandma but don't tell her anything about me. I don't want her worryin' and I don't want her knowin' if she doesn't have to." I said, kissing the top of her head.
"Okay." She nodded.
"I don't know where this'll take me. I don't know if I'll get in trouble for it, killed for it, or what. But I can't come back here even if it was to be with you."
"How could we reconnect if you did survive and get through it?"
I sighed, "I have no idea. I could be half-way across the fuckin' country."
She sniffled and wiped her nose, "I can't believe this is happening."
"I know, darlin'. I know." I kissed her head again.
We sat listening to the radio just being with each other for another hour. We fell asleep for an hour after that, wrapped in each other with the blanket draper over us. The sun rising woke us up. We awoke at the same time and readjusted our position to how it was before and watched the sun turn the sky red, pink, purple and orange.
"Ain't this the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?" She asked quietly, as if trying not to disturb the sun from continuing its venture into the sky.
I moved her hair away from her face and tilted her chin to look up at me.
"Nothing can or will ever be more beautiful than you, y/n." I said softly.
She smiled and colour rose to her cheeks. I leaned down and kissed her. It was deep and meaningful and timeless. Like the world stopped just for us. It was breathless and beautiful and it made my heart ache knowing I would never have this again.
She was the love of my life.
"I'll need to drive you home before your parents wake up." I sighed, pulling away from her.
She closed her eyes in dread but nodded in agreement.
We got out and peed then changed into our clothes. She took her hair out of the plait so it was wavy. I'd never seen it like that before. She looked beautiful. I leaned against the bonnet of the car with a cigarette in my mouth, watching the lake liven up again and the sun poking through the trees. y/n walked up slowly to me and stood next to me, wrapping her arms around me. We both looked at the scene in front of us and took it in.
"Let's get on the road, alright?" I whispered to her.
"Okay." She gulped.
I disposed my cigarette then we got in the car. I reluctantly drove away and we got back on the road, heading up to her house.
My hand stayed gripped in hers the whole way. I drove as slowly as I could up the drive but we reached the gate and I had to stop.
We turned to each other and crashed our lips together. We were both already crying so the breathlessness and the salty taste on our tongues was mutual. I cupped her cheeks and threaded my hands in her hair, then down her back and her waist to her hips and her ass, squeezing and then coming back up.
We both parted but stayed millimetres away, gasping for air.
"I love you." She said hurriedly.
"I love you too." I said it back.
"Fuck, I don't wanna get out the car." She cursed.
I brought her head to my clavicle, pressing my lips to her head and inhaling her scent.
"I love you." I said again as she pulled away.
She reached for me again, our lips meeting in a rushed, passionate manner.
Her hands moved into my hair to down my chest and then back up to cup my face.
"Fuck, I've gotta go, Arvin." She panted, a tear falling down her cheek.
"I love you." I said.
She hesitantly pulled away, our hands still intertwined.
"Be safe and do what you have to do, alright? I will always love you, Arvin." She said shakily.
"I will always love you, y/n." I stated, my eyes blurring.
She waited and paused and I knew she was about to go.
I leaned in again, kissing her deeply, getting the last taste of her, swirling my tongue hurriedly around hers in an attempt to savour every last moment with her.
We pulled away.
"I love you, Arvin."
"I love you, y/n."
She immediately got out the car. Slamming the door shut to rip the band-aid even more. I watched her as she walked up her driveway and up the steps to her house.
My heart shattered when she got in and shut the door without looking back.
"Fuck."
****
I sat down a few pews back from Reverend Teagardin, resisting the urge to shoot and kill him on the spot.
"Excuse me, Preacher?" I spoke up.
I looked up at him from my cap.
"You got time for a sinner?"

Marriage. A social and formal union between two people that binds them emotionally, economically and legally. The Vedas said it bonded two souls with a thin red thread connecting them together. Marriage was supposed to be a celebration. A celebration and confession of love, love that two individuals wanted to share with the world. It was a promise, to hold each other through every bad thing life threw at them, to love each other unconditionally, forever. It was everything except what you were doing right now.
All hold you had on your life seemed to be slipping away. You wondered whether you had any to begin with. The ceremony had been dark. Your father had gripped your hand tightly as he walked you down the aisle. He whispered at you to stay strong. His eyes had been red as he gave you away. You didn’t know how to tell him it was going to be okay, not when you didn’t believe it yourself.
George Weasley, your fiancé had hardly even looked at you throughout the vows. The forced kiss after burnt your skin. Oh, how ironic the whole thing was. You felt every second pierce a knife deeper into your chest as the ‘party’ dragged on, but now you could hardly remember anything. A distant clink of champagne glasses and expensive dresses was all that clouded your memory. There was a shift at the door and you jumped, hardly comfortable with your new surroundings. George looked at you for a moment and immediately averted his eyes.
“I’m going to be asleep next door if you need anything. There’s food in the fridge if you get hungry,” he said staring at the wall above you. You nodded slowly, unsure how to break the tension. George left; slamming the door behind him. You gulped. You looked around at the room as tears pricked your eyes. Your head was thumping. You took the pills the healer had prescribed. You didn’t know how to be strong, not anymore.
You laid down on the bed, your breath coming out in spurts. You blinked away the tears staring at the grey ceiling. You were married. Married to someone you didn’t know. Someone who refused to look at you. The fan moved slowly making a grating sound. Crack, crack, crack with every rotation it made. You pulled the pillows towards you, their scent foreign and unfamiliar. The dress you wore itched everywhere but you really couldn’t bring yourself to care. Perhaps the itch was the reminder that you were alive, that it wasn’t just a bad dream. You didn’t know when sleep lured you in.
***
You woke up in a haze. Your head thumped loudly and your body ached all over. Your chest heaved as you laid down on the bed again. The will to face everything had never been smaller. You had to get up. You had to.
Sitting up on the bed, you looked around the room. You had placed your suitcase under the dressing table. You went to open it, taking out the most comfortable clothes you could find. You remembered where Weasley- George, told you the attached washroom was. Funny, how different things looked in the morning. You tip-toed outside, trying to find any signs of him. It seemed that he left before you woke up.
The house was smaller as compared to the one you were accustomed to. You took your time looking around. Everything was decorated colorfully. The walls were all whitewashed. Bamboo chairs were placed haphazardly around the table, yellow pots adorned the walls. The curtains were a pale blue and were wide open, letting the sunlight in.
You sighed moving towards the bathroom. Maybe a hot shower would be a good idea right now. You took a deep breath. It wasn’t that bad. You unzipped the white dress as it pooled at your feet. It wasn’t that bad. You repeated it over and over again as thick fog surrounded you.
You spent the day arranging your stuff in a wardrobe. You took breaks to eat and drink or maybe just roam aimlessly around the house. You had things to report and start working on, but it was better to stay low for the time being. There was a click at the door and you snapped towards the entrance.
Bella.
“Oh hello, my sweet little baby. How are you?” she said clicking her tongue. Your body tensed. How much you just hated her voice.
“Hello Bella, I’m good. May I ask what brought you here?” you quipped, having her around never ended well. Bella gasped mockingly.
“Wouldn’t you welcome me in boo?” she said and you took in a deep breath.
“Bella, I think you hardly ever drop by to have tea with me so it’ll be better for us both if you got to the point,” you replied, forcing a smile. She let out a horrendous laugh.
“Oh, I this is why I always like you so much. I just came to remind you why this arrangement was made in the first place,” she said, moving around the room as your body stiffened even more. “The dark lord expects some children soon, my love.”
You clenched your jaw.
“The agreement was to marriage between purebloods-“
“To produce more of us. To cleanse the society-“
“That was never mentioned-“
“Oh you’re a baby, aren’t you? Do you think you can just not follow the dark lord’s-“
“What the fuck?”
You turned towards the door, finding George glaring at Bellatrix.
“Oh so the father finally decides to drop by,” Bella said looking over at him. She played with a strand of her hair as if tempting George to do something.
“Wha-“
“George,” you whispered, making him look towards you for the very first time. “Bella was here to deliver a message from the dark lord. She’ll be leaving soon.”
You tried to tell him as softly as possible. George didn’t trust you, you knew that, but the circumstances the two of you were in, you hoped he would. You saw him relax just a little as something crossed his eyes.
“How very sweet!” Bella interrupted with a wicked smirk. “Aren’t the two of you quite a match? I expect to hear about a pregnancy soon then.”
She threw a vial at you and gave you a wink before moving towards the door. You bit your tongue, not wanting to escalate the situation anymore.
“Excuse me- what pregnancy?” George demanded as Bella smirked at him.
“Take a spoonful every morning, it will help,” she told you before apprating into nothingness.
George turned towards you.
“Why was she in my house?” he asked through gritted teeth. You turned towards him, your hands fisting up.
“I didn’t exactly invite her,” you quipped turning, moving towards your room to dispose of the vial.
“I asked, why was she here?” he said following you inside.
“To tell me that the dark lord expects children soon,”
“That wasn’t the part of the agreement,” he hissed. You gritted your teeth. Why did he behave like you wanted all of this?
“I know,” you tried to reason. “I know and that’s what I told her. Do you think she’s the one to listen?”
“Okay- let’s make one thing clear. That woman. She tortured my mother and my sister. I don’t ever want her in my house. Do all your little tea parties elsewhere. She doesnot step into the house.”
“What the hell, George?! Are you dumb? I can’t tell her not to enter the house. You’re acting as if I’m the one who’s the root to all the problems. Newsflash! My hands are just as tied as yours.”
George scoffed.
“At least you got to choose.”
“Choose what? Huh? Choose between marrying you or my cousin?”
He glared at you and you did the same to him.
“Don’t act like you aren’t one of them. Don’t pretend you don’t believe in all those bullshit ideals that have landed us like this,” George screamed as your anger rised. What was about him that made your emotions sway so much?
“Wow. I can’t believe you. Even after you just refused to talk to me, I thought there was at least some hope. Hope that maybe, if not support me, step up to work this thing out-“
“WORK THIS THING OUT? WORK TH- ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I WAS FORCED TO MARRY YOU TO SAVE MY DAD’S LIFE AND YOU WANT TO WORK THINGS OUT-”
“You-“
“NO NO- YOU LISTEN TO ME. THIS. WHATEVER THE FUCK THIS IS. THIS IS-“
“George-“
“IS NEVER GONNA WORK OUT. SO IT’S BETTER-“
“I DON’T WANT TO BE HERE GEORGE.”
You screamed as he finally listened to you. His nostrils flared.
“I don’t want to be here,” you hissed, your voice lowering. “I’m stuck. Don’t you see it? I’m stuck here. I’m not asking you to talk to me. Hell! Even look at me. No. I’m asking you to behave like a decent human being and not blame me for everything life throws at you. I’m not a doormat and I refuse to be treated like one.”
You saw George’s chest rise and fall. He looked at you, really looked at you. He huffed leaving the room, slamming the door behind him. You threw the vial at the floor making it shatter and the paintings rattled around you. So much for keeping calm.

this abandoned, shy bunny hybrid loves hanging around the open field area of the recovery facility. one day, with the help of jungkook, another bunny hybrid, jiyu meets mingi. after days of mingi being too shy and running away from her, a bag of carrots and mint chocolate ice chip cream was all it took to seal the deal.

“alright guys, i’m heading out!” jiyu called out to the four hybrids as she put her shoes on. “remember, no burning the penthouse down, don’t let any weird people inside, and stay in one piece, yes?” she joked.
hongjoong playfully scoffed as he and the others came to see her off. “who do you think we are?”
she gave each of them a ruffle on their heads. “remember that one time yunho almost broke the flooring because he and seonghwa decided to try a wrestling match—”
“okay, i took a nap one time,” hongjoong defended.
“i’m kidding, bubs. just stay safe, yeah?” since she sent yuta out the day before to get mingi’s adoption forms, she was scared that they would discover her and send someone to her home. despite it being a low probability, she was still taking safety precautions.
“don’t worry about us, jiyu! we’ll be fine here!” yunho reassured. “we were just going to spend most of the time teaching mingi how to play with the switch so don’t worry about us doing something weird...and i promise i won’t break anything,” he sheepishly added.
“...what’s a switch?” mingi asked, cocking his head to the side in confusion. ever since spending his days with jiyu, seonghwa, hongjoong, and yunho, he’s never felt as free and happy in his life. with the exception of yunho, he’s been slowly opening up to jiyu and the two oldest hybrids. not only to them, but he's been slowly breaking out of his shell to the world; he’s grown quite loud, and jiyu realized that he talked quite a lot and he could make anyone in the room laugh with his antics.
“...you’ll see soon,” seonghwa chuckled. he was still quite salty at the fact that he now had to share the switch with three other people when before, it was just him and sometimes jiyu. but, as yunho put it, sharing is caring.
“okay, bye for real, you guys,” she quickly said before opening the door and blowing them air kisses before leaving. “and remember to eat!” she reminded as she ran down the hall towards the elevator.
“yes, mom!” hongjoong teasingly shouted back as they all waved her goodbye. once the elevator door closed, hongjoong closed the front door and locked it. seonghwa, yunho, and mingi were already explaining what video games were and how to play them. “they really are little kids,” he whispered under his breathe as he joined them on the couch to watch them have a tournament in mario kart.
noon came around before anyone realized since they were so absorbed in their match (surprisingly, mingi caught on how to play really quick and had been destroying the other three for the past hour). seonghwa had taken a break and decided to cook something for lunch rather than getting delivery. he felt bad for always spending jiyu’s money on takeout, despite her reassuring them that it was okay.
in the middle of him stirring the kimchi jiggae, they all heard the doorbell ring. they froze, yunho instantly turning the volume of their game down. they weren't expecting any visitors, and it definitely wasn’t jiyu. mingi started to panic. what if they found him? would they hurt the others? are they in danger? his bunny instincts started to take over and he immediately hid behind the couch. although...it wasn’t the best place considering his height; his ears and tail could still be seen. yunho and hongjoong stood by the couch, prepared to protect mingi in case people were here to take him.
seonghwa quietly tip-toed towards the door and peeked through the peephole. an elegant black cat hybrid was standing outside with some files in his hands. he carefully opened the door and peeked out so only up to his eyes could be seen. “can i help you?” he asked the stranger outside.
the cat hybrid looked bewildered before relaxing. “is miss—i mean, jiyu home?” he asked. “she did tell me this was where she lived...?”
“what do you need with her?” seonghwa asked, still not letting his guard down.
“ohh,” the cat’s eyes widened in realization, “i’m yuta, her personal assistant from the main house,” he politely bowed. “i guess she never mentioned me.” yuta eyed seonghwa’s wolf ears. “you must be the wolf hybrid...” he mumbled under his breath.
seonghwa opened the door wider and looked back towards the other three. “it’s okay, he knows jiyu,” he reassured before gesturing for yuta to come in and closing the door.
yuta walked in and looked around, his black tail lazily swinging around. “is there a hybrid named mingi here?” he asked. yunho pointed to the couch and yuta almost chuckled upon seeing the shivering ears and tail. “don’t worry, i’m not here to hurt you. in fact, i come with some news.”
mingi slowly peeked over the couch, his doe eyes shaking with nerves. “you won’t hurt me?”
yuta shook his head before a shiver ran down his spine. “if i do, jiyu’s going to have my head and curse my bloodline for as long as she lives,” he nervously chuckled.
the other four sweat-dropped at his comment.
“anyways, i’m going to assume jiyu’s not here?” yuta asked, his nose sniffing for her scent.
“she went to work and she won’t be home until six...” hongjoong said before glancing up at the clock. it was two, meaning yuta had another four hours at least until she came back.
yuta pursed his lips. “i don’t have much time before jiyu’s father knows i’m missing, so i’ll just pass the news onto you guys and you can tell jiyu,” he decided before laying the manila folder onto the table. “all the things you need are in there, i’m pretty sure you all know what it is,” he slyly smiled before waving over his shoulder and leaving.
the four looked at the front door, utterly speechless at his exit. “he’s just as mysterious as jiyu...” yunho commented. “what’s in the folder?” he asked.
hongjoong opened the folder and after a moment of staring at the papers, their eyes widened in recognition. “a-are those—” he stuttered.
squeezing between yunho and seonghwa, mingi peered at the documents and his heart skipped almost three beats. “h-how—?”
“mingi’s adoption documents...” seonghwa mumbled in awe.
the three broke into cheers as mingi just stared, dumbfounded, at the papers. the cheers around him faded into white noise as he carefully picked up the documents.
“am i dreaming...?” he asked in a daze. yunho threw his arms around his best friend and pinched his side, causing him to yelp.
“nope, you’re awake!” yunho laughed.
seonghwa ruffled mingi’s hair. “welcome home, mingi.”
to say that jiyu was absolutely confused when she came back home was an understatement. mingi was still sobbing out of happiness on the couch while yunho, hongjoong, and seonghwa comfortingly pat him.
her protective instincts immediately kicked in. “what happened to mingi?” she asked. “is he okay?”
hongjoong chuckled. “don’t worry, he’s more than okay,” he said before handing her the manila folder.
peering through the content, jiyu’s jaw practically fell to the floor before her eyes whipped to mingi. she let out a little squeal before throwing her arms around the bunny. “welcome home, minmin!” she grinned.
mingi ended up crying harder as he returned her embrace, making them chuckle. while giving him soothing pets on the head, she realized that yuta must’ve came while she was at work, meaning he met the four of them. “i guess you all met yuta?” she pulled a sticky note from the bottom of the papers.
you owe me one, miss jiyu :P
she chuckled and slightly rolled her eyes.
“he’s quite a...mysterious character,” yunho said, trying to find the nicest way to put it.
“he kind of reminds me of you...not in a bad way!” he quickly added after seeing the insulted look on her face. “you both just seem like you hide more than what you want people to see.”
jiyu stopped petting mingi on the head at his words. he wasn’t wrong. with the exception of seonghwa and yunho, hongjoong and mingi don’t know of her background. it’s not that she wants it a secret, she jusy never got around to telling them. but growing up in a cold-blooded business environment taught her to hide her emotions to prevent weaknesses from showing. she just grew up so used to not confiding in people about how she felt; she so used to not having the right to complain about her pre-planned life.
“...jiyu...jiyu!”
snapping back to reality, she realized all of them were worriedly staring at her. hongjoong gave her an apologetic look. “s-sorry, i didn’t mean to upset you...” he whispered as he looked down at his lap. his ears drooped.
“no, no, you didn’t upset me,” she reassured with a gentle ruffle of his hair. “it’s just new for me to hear that,” she sheepishly chuckled before standing up.“come on, why don’t we go get some ice cream to celebrate for mingi?”
“in this cold weather?” seonghwa asked as he looked outside. “winter’s coming.”
“all the more reason to get ice cream,” she childishly reasoned, making their hearts melt. it wasn’t often they saw that side of her.
“alright, alright,” seonghwa pretended to give in, but in reality, he would’ve gone from the beginning.
“sound good, mingi?” she asked. “or do you want something else?”
mingi looked up at her from the couch with his sparkly eyes. “can i get mint chocolate chip flavor?” he asked. (hongjoong made a quiet gagging sound at the mention of the flavor, making seonghwa lightly smack his arm.)
jiyu affectionatey smiled. “of course, mingi. anything you want.”

Sleep depravity
You feel like shit.
Flashback
Ahaha, the new year! A time for fun and festivities! Surely, that’s what YOU’RE going to be doing, right?
Wrong.
Well, I mean right, but it’s not fun by what most of NRC calls as. So imagine this, right, you’re sitting in yo damn class doing your damn shit when suddenly, your classmate whispers to you from behind.
“Hey.” You nudge an elbow, to show that you’re listening.
“You should watch ‘Tales of the Seven Lords’. It’s a really good series.” You nod in thanks at the recommendation and your classmate retreats back to his seat.
And the day goes on as usual: Running around campus doing your part-time jobs, occasionally talking to your friends and seniors, feeding Grim, appreciating how fine everybody looks today- pardon me.
So now, it’s bedtime and you’re there listening to Grim talk as you do your homework. Then, he says: “Oh yeah, someone said something about a recommendation, right?”
“Right, I forgot about that.” You nod, finishing your homework in time. “We should check that out to watch for New Years. It’s in a few days.” You sigh, bouncing your leg.
See, unlike from where you’re from, NRC has a different curriculum, where the OFFICIAL tests come out somewhere in the 3rd and 9th month of the year, not the 6th and the 12th, so this is just cooldown time for you to kind of chill and relax.
“Right, holidays~~~ We don’t need to listen to Vargas anymore!” Grim hums cheerfully, and you nod. He’s already loud and super annoying every time he meets a slightly muscular kid, but add THAT with him rambling about safety protocols? Nah, man, ya can’t.
"Ah yes, the holidays where everyone goes home and leaves us here to wail and stay all alone with nobody- I mean I got you but you know- nobody and probably have to clean the school.” You take a deep breath. “Lovely.”
"That annoying guy is going to do something like that...” Grim complains, rolling over to flop on your stomach. “I don’t wanna!”
“Same...” You reply lazily, fist bumping Grim’s paw. “Hahah... hah...”
Despite your complaining, you feel a little giddy. I mean, come on, you get the FUCK around the school, all day by yourselves! What’s not to love about that? And the series is sure to keep you entertained.
Flashback end.
‘That was a terrible, terrible thing to think about.’ You thought blearily, thoughts swirling around your head as Grim falls asleep on you, *heetos and dorr*tos all over your body, making you feel sticky and gross.
It’s now the actual new years, where everybody’s gone home and like you predicted, Crowley did assign you to tasks- fucking bird, so you and Grim’s ass didn’t do what he told you. Fucking hell, the school’s been functioning DAMN well without you, surely the tasks not THAT big of a deal, right?
After goofing around for a few days, you’re getting bored, so you drag your lazy self to Sam’s store (where his friends from the other side are tending it for him) and rent out a DVD- Crowley didn’t gift you a phone, unfortunately (but still fixed that old TV set??? Man’s got some weird priorities)
You bring this news to Grim, who immediately begs and whines for you to open and watch the show. So you did.
The first episode, you were intrigued, but only a little bit. The same went for the 2nd and 3rd episode. You’re about to call it a lame series when you hit... the 4th episode.
It was a wild ride of emotions and wow... that scene where Henry helps the king really brought you and Grim to tears.
You were hooked. Or in other words, you were fucked. Fucked because now, you can’t THINK of anything BUT the series, which forces you to stay at home and watch the entire god-damn thing and now its 2 days after that.
At... you blearily open your eyes and notice the cracks of light shining through the curtain. “Oh god...” At somewhere around 8 am in the morning.
“Fucking hell... I’ve gone and fucked up my sleep schedule... shit...” And for some reason, tears began running down your eyes. What the fuck? Are you THAT tired that’d you’d cry over your SLEEP SCHEDULE?
Yes. Yes, you are.
You hear a knock at the door. “Oh my fucking god.” You curse, rolling down the uneven wooden floors, wincing as you get splinters. You lethargically stand up  and open the door and look up to see...
HEARTSLABYUL
Someone 5 cm taller then you- oh screw off, you’re 145 cm, its okay to be pissed, you know?
“Happy new year, prefect-” You interrupt him.
“Oh.. you’re cute!” You grin gleefully, pinching the red hair’s cheeks.
“U-unhand me at once!” The guy with red hair shouted, forcibly taking your hands away. “Or its off with your head!”
"What, you’re gonna- you’re gonna tie me up~?” You tease, punching the guy’s shoulder. “That’s kinky dude... like tone down the horny ya know...”
2 guys with red-orange hair and other with blue starts laughing loudly in the background and you laugh too.
The guy with red hair STARTS turning red- oh my fucking god, people can turn red?
“OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!” And a collar winds up around your neck.
“Eh????” You ask, lightly tugging at the collar. “What the fackin hell is this shit? Y’all really out here puttin’ collars and shit on people... in the middle of the day too... wow...”  You mutter, slipping into a country accent.
Flash! You hear a snap of a camera and turn to look at another person with a feather duster on his head- why does he have a feather duster- you know what, its cute, and you like it. You reach up and begin petting it, effectively blocking the phone he’s holding.
“Eto, prefect? You’re kinda- woah!” You look at him with a glazy eyes from those 2 days of non stop watching.
"Are you a...” You ponder, biting your lip as you blink repeatedly. “Are you... a fuck boy?”
(“CATER’S A FUCK- CATER’S F-FUCK- AHAHAHAHA-” Ace wheezes in the background as Deuce starts laughing harder, neither of them caring that they have collars on their first day back.)
Fuck boy has a bewildered look on his face, but before you could see his reaction, another hand goes to tug you back. You look up and... is that... is that lettuce, you see? No no way, it... it kinda looks like broccoli, though..
“Let’s get you to bed, prefect.” The broccoli tells you firmly, but like hell are you listening to a broccoli! Fuck man, you got higher standards then that, come on!
“No! I’m not listening to a broccoli!” You duck, effectively pulling out of his grasp and ran inside to wherever room you’re in and slam it shut. “YOU’RE NEVER GETTING ME, BROCCOLI MAN!!!”
(”Bro---brocoll-” This time, it’s Deuce’s time to collectively pound weakly at the dirt, one hand holding onto Ace’s shoulder as he looses it.)
Eventually, you slump on the ground and slowly... you don’t hear the brocolli’s voice anymore.. which is good (but like, why does his voice sound so... sexy??? Like, why??? It doesn’t make any... sense...)
---
Ace and Deuce finish from their laughing stock, having to hold on to the third years to get up from their position. “We’ll go check on the prefect.” Deuce tried to say, a snort or two making its way to the sentence.
“HAH- KINKY- KINKY FUCK BOY BROCCOLI--- AHAHAHAHAHA-” Ace was still loosing it as he walked inside, a tear streaking down his face. “I love the prefect so fucking much.”
Laughter bubbles up against Deuce’s throat as he walks in. “F...Fuck...boy...”
“W-where is the prefect, anyway?” They immediately see you, slumped against the hallway, snoozing away. With their strong powers, they gently lift and place you on the sofa, amidst all the gunk and shit that’s piled up.
“Ew, what were they even doing?” Ace cringes, looking at the mess. “It smells like shit.”
“They’re watching ‘Tales of the Seven Lords’- oh.” Deuce nods, in extreme understanding. He too, has pulled all-nighters with his gang to watch this series... oh how they cried like mad.
“Oh, that show... it’s bad. I don’t like it.”
“What?!” Deuce swiftly turns around. “But its really good!”
“No, it’s not, what? You got some poor taste, Juice.”
“It’s Deuce, not Juice! And you’re the one with poor taste!”
They bicker all the way, until they’re lovingly threatened by Riddle to NOT say a word, or its way more then off with your head, got it~?
SAVANACLAW
An extremely good-looking lion man- lion man, the fuck???- who lazily looks around at your dorm. Behind him is an EVEN better looking man, this one with a very fluffy tail and BEEG ears and BEEG body and my god, wow... he also sexy- like, sexier then lion man.
“Furry?” You mutter, your eyes falling onto another boy with animal-like ears and tail, except he’s shorter then the two, but his eyes seem to have more light in them.
“Happy New Year, prefect~!” He cheers on, his small tail wagging- oh that is cute oh my fuck- oh shit-
“...what the fuck? Why the fuck are there furries?” You gasp in alarm, running your hands through your hair in a frantic manner. “HAVE I MISSED A FUCKING GENERATION OF FURRIES?!”
“NONONONO NO NO NO THERE’S NO FUCKING WAY- NO-” You scream, falling onto the floor and grabbing a piece of your hair.
A shadow seems to loom over you, and you can feel something fluffy- or maybe that’s just you. “Prefect, are you okay- not like I’m worried, or anything, but...?” That line seems like something you’ve heard, but from where?
“Has the herbivore lost their mind?” Sexy lion man can be heard asking in the back, his voice quickly slipping into a yawn.
“Are ya worried, Leona?” The smaller guy teases, a ‘shi shi shi’ going past his lips.
“Tch.”
Well they seem like good friends- nice.
“I’m fine-” You look up and BAM WOAH WHAT IS THAT- SOMEONE’S PANTS AREA THING NOPE-
“I’M NOT FINE FUCKKKKKKK!” You scream back. The guy jumps back.
“Prefect, are you possessed?”
“By this stage? I might as well fucking be- HAH!” And you snort at that- it’s not even funny, you moron. “Oh, and also sexy lion man- yeah I’m talking to you, yeah you-” You point at said man. “I’m not a herbivore, okay? Like, I’m not a vegan (NO OFFENSE TO THE VEGANS OUT THERE), umm...” You slip into a dramatic accent where everything becomes more pronounced.
“I’m a fucking omnivore, and if you wanna like, insult me, please do it right. Thanks.” You pose, your hands making a heart shape, before slumping onto strong boy’s arms.
“Pfft- AHAHAHAH-” And Ruggie’s gone and lost his shit, because what’d you expect, right?
Leona looks surprised, before becoming very irritated, dragging Ruggie by the scruff/neck and walking away, leaving Jack to deal with you.
His seniors out of earshot and eyeshot, he glances at your sleeping form, which was nuzzling up to him, sighing in bliss as the warmth surrounds you.
He lets out a snicker despite his best efforts not too. Goodness, you surprise him every day.
He easily brings you inside with a princess carry, making sure to respectfully touch only your legs and you back to support you.
He glances at your sleeping form- what on earth were you doing that could keep you up so late, anyways? Oh, he finds out by passing through the living room, TV still on.
He finds your bedroom and lays you down there, not bothering to bring Grim inside- just kidding, he absolutely brings Grim in because he knows how much you love each other, but you didn’t hear that from me~
He glances at your form again and brushes some hair out of your face. The steady rise and fall of your chest eases him. Maybe he should stay here, just in case you wake up and act like THAT again and that’s something he’s sure a lot of people aren’t ready to witness.
He takes a chair and sits in front of you, once again having his eyes trained on you, seeing he has nowhere to look at.
A content smile passes your lips, and he smiles at that. What kind of dreams are you having, he wonders? (Little did he know its about him)
Wait.
If he’s waiting for you like this, isn’t that what you usually do for friends?! He stands up immediately, regretting his actions just as fast as he notices you squirm, sighing in relief as you settle back down onto your dazed state again.
“Happy New Year, prefect. Let’s make more memories together.” He mutters lowly, far too low for you to hear but somehow, you smile at just the right moment.
He leaves quickly, a red blush adorning his cheeks. No, that does NOT make him happy in the slightest! His tail isn’t wagging, his ears aren’t red, you’re lying!
Right?
Wrong.
Yeah, right.
Oh, god damn you and making him so confused!
OCTAVINELLE
An incredibly good-looking gent, with a smile on his face that doesn’t look as nice as it should. And look, he’s got a fedora! That speaks fancy~
“Happy New Year, pre-” You take the fedora and slap it onto your head, to the surprise and subsequent irritation of this man.
Or octopus. Honestly, they radiate the same vibe, so you wouldn’t know.
Then, you began doing the Orange Justice (cringe) as you hum- “Mhph, then you break it down! Down! Down! High! Down!”
“Is shrimpy-chan okay?” Oh what the fuck he’s so tall- THERE’S ANOTHER ONE YOU’RE SEEING THINGS-
“Oya oya.” HE HAS ARA-ARA ENERGY OH MY GOD YOU CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS- NONONONONO-
“Ara ara? Ara ara ara~ ara ARA!” You reply in kind, switching to a weird boogie as you sing offkey about a song.
“Under the sea~~~ under the sea~~ something, something, du do do do, under the sea~ under the grass, and till they fall~ ahhhh!!!” You grab the gent’s hands and drag him to you, paying very close attention to your feet as you attempt to tap dance.
The gent splutters indigation, so you leave him be and focus on your feet.
“Ne, that sounds fun!” The 1st double says, following you to dance- except he’s doing way better then you.
“Wha- how the fuck- that’s good! How the fackkkk... fuck... fucking... fucking fucking wop wop!” You giggle, trying to imitate his dance.
“Hehe, shrimpy’s funny when they’re tired!” Double 1 says, grabbing your waist as you shout in fright.
“Jade, maybe we should-”
“Let them be, Azul.”
Upon closer inspection, you realize that this ‘Jade’ has resonating vibes with Sebastian from Black Butler- wait, is this the twin cliche?! Where there’s the crazy one and the other’s the sane one?! But then again, he has that scary smile on his face... hmm, maybe that theory should be left alone.
You, still Double 1′s arms, shout: “Come on butler man! Join us!!!”
“Butler... are you referring to me?” He sounds surprised.
“Yeee! Come on dude, let’s vibeeee-” You stop mumbling and began singing again. “Oh oh, I’m a rebel just for kicks now! OWAH!!!”
“Owah~~” Double 1 joins, and Jade with a grin, joins in. “Owah~”
“...owah...” The gent also joins, albeit in a softer tone.
“What else, shrimp- eh??? They’re asleep!” Floyd pouts as he gazes at your non-moving body. “No fun.”
“Oya, maybe we should bring them back to their couch. It looks like a nice place to be.” Jade remarks, looking at the pile of chips and snacks on the floor. Floyd shruges, dropping you with a thud, but you don’t seem to wake up. Jade picks you up for Floyd and brings you to the couch.
Azul cringes at the sight of messy chips. “It’s giving me heartburn just looking at it.”
“Don’t lie, Azul. We saw you eating the same thing yesterday~” Floyd teases, a wide grin placate on his face.
“...I could’ve sworn nobody saw me! How...” Azul mumbles to himself, a red flush on his face.
“They’re asleep. We should leave them be.” Jade suggests, walking back to the group.
Azul nods. “There’s nothing I can make a deal about, anyway. And, the benevolent sea witch wouldn’t agree with that, wouldn’t she?”
"Yeah! Goodnight, shrimpy!” Still, you don’t reply, but Floyd looks happy enough since he hoists Azul up from his stand and walks out with him, princess style.
“F-floyd, put me down!”
“Nah, Jade looked really happy holding Shrimpy, so I’ll do the same to you~”
“Floyd!”
Jade walks behind them, watching as they have their fun.
Did I really look that happy? He glances back at your living room and gives a rare, sincere smile to the dimly lit room.
“Goodnight, prefect. I hope to get along with you better.” He whispers to himself, before closing the door gently behind and catching up to his brother.
SCARABIA
Sunshine??? in the form of a... homo sapient???? and a snake??? why the fuck-???
“Happy New Year, prefect! I brought you some food, a few blankets and oh!” The sunshine greets, giving you things, which you don’t have the strength to take, but nod as thanks anyways. He hands you a carpet, incredibly soft, 100% quality. “A carpet- eh, prefect?! Are you okay?!” The sunshine fusses, grabbing your cheeks in worry.
You melt, easing into the touch. “I’m okay now.” You lazily reply, giving him a slow wink. “Haha, get it? Cause- cause you’re here, and you’re the sun, and you’re cute, so like... haha? No?” You don’t let him reply as you sigh and nod, taking his hands of your cheeks. “Alright.”
The sunshine grins at your attempt. “I don’t really know what you mean, but thanks!” Oh my god he’s so cute-
“...hopefully, these things can dress up your broken- er, rustic house.” The snake replies, watching your behavior with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
You son of a bitch-
“Look, snake-man. No no no no, look at me. Watashi no eyes, you look at eyes- you see my eyes?” You stalk towards the snake, squinting at the bright sun (2 suns) as you trudge towards him. “Y-you see? Yeah, these eyes have tried their FUCKING best to fix up this dorm, so please, bro, please don’t like, mock it cuz like-- it’s really fucking hard- and you know why?!”
“Why?” The sunshine questions, just as you hope (but for some reason, the snake has backed away and is guarding the sunshine. You wonder why.)
“Lemme tell you why- lemme tell you why. So, this bird-man bitch boy I don’t fucking know, right-” The snake sort of laughs at this description as sunshine nods. “This guy, right, leaves ALL this SHIT to me- like BITCH, did you see the fucking state of this... I don’t know, um, SHACK?!” You point aggressively at the house. “Yeah man, it was SHIT! Like, there were holes, rats on the ground, and there were a insects everywhere...” Oho, snake seems to tense up at this, walking towards sunshine in a scared manner.
“The wood was rotting, it smelled like mold... the couches were moldy, the BED was moldy... it was... it was FUCKING shit mate, like the fuck?! You expect me to clean up that shit in what, like...” You bring up your fingers, not even counting. “Three fucking days? Like what the fucking hell, bitch? I’d like to- to- to know what the fuck crossed his mind, like the fuck, you know?”
“That seems hard, prefect. Do you want us to help?” The sunshine offers, but the snake interjects, saying: “Kalim (oh, so his name is Kalim, huh? Cute name for a cute guy!), how many times do I have to tell you? Don’t-”
“But it looks like they’re having a really hard time!” Kalim argues, pouting and looking at you pitifully, and you give the snake a woeful mourning face. The snake glares at you, before sighing heavily. Ah, damn, you feel kind of bad.
“Nah, it’s okay sunshine, I can handle it. Oh, by the way, have ya seen my baby?” You say nonchalantly, describing your feline friend.
“Baby?” The snake pales. “You have a baby?!”
“Prefect, why do you have a baby?” The sunshine panics too, eyes widening, forgetting the nickname you gave him.
“Yeah, I do! Wanna see-” Slump! You fall onto the ground before you can finish your sentence, leaning across the snake’s legs.
“Oh... they’re probably talking about Grim...” Jamil realizes, sighing in relief at the thought.
“Oh yeah, that’s probably it! Hehe, we think alike, Jamil!” Kalim grins, much to the chagrin of Jamil.
“Yeah, yeah, we do. Now come on-” Jamil lifts up your body, princess style and grunts. “Help me open the door.”
“Sure thing!” Kalim hums, opening the door. “What do you think they were doing, looking so tired?”
Jamil shrugs, walking inside ASAP, first giving the dorm a quick sweep with his eyes- he isn’t quite sure how to feel about the bugs you said. They pass by the living room and upon seeing the disarray, nod in understanding.
“Kalim, can you clean it while I put the prefect back in their room?” Kalim nods and gets to work, rolling up his sleeves.
Jamil smiles, nodding as he walks towards your bedroom, opening it with his foot. Surprisingly, it looks WAY cleaner then your living room- you really did stay up all night to watch whatever show was on, huh? The bed isn’t even creased.
Jamil sets you down gently, and you immediately roll to the side, sighing in comfort. He watches as the crumbs of snacks fall onto the bed, and thanks the graces that its not Kalim’s, or his bed that got the food spilled, phew.
Speaking of Kalim, how is he faring? Jamil walks back to the living room, fully expecting to see Kalim get distracted, but much to his ACTUAL surprise, the room is a quarter cleaned. The crisps are thrown in the trash bin and the blankets are folded up, albeit not neatly.
Jamil smiles, a little bit proud of Kalim. “Kalim?”
“Here. Shh, not so loud. Grim’s sleeping.” Kalim whispers back, waving from the kitchen. “I’m trying to clean the dishes, but...”
“Here, let me teach you.” And so, they two do their best to help clean the living room until it’s up to Jamil’s standard.
“I bet they’ll feel surprised when they wake up!” Kalim giggles, happy that it’s clean.
“I hope so, it’ll be a waste if we did all this and they didn’t notice.” Jamil frowns, crossing his arms, satisfied. “I’m sure they liked the gifts, Kalim?”
“Really?! I didn’t go overboard, right?!” Kalim worries, looking at Jamil in concern.
“You always do.” Was Jamil’s snide remark.
“Jamil!” Kalim pouts, and Jamil nods.
“It’s true.”
“Aww... I thought I really... aww...” Kalim shakes his head, cheering up immediately. “There’s always next time! Let’s visit Heartslabyul next, Jamil!”
“Let’s go.” And Kalim rushes out, shouting a ‘Happy New Year!’ to the dorm, despite his previous warning. Jamil says nothing, echoing his behavior as they walk out.
(And it’s true. After 14 hours or so, you wake up, walked towards the living room, and cried the SHIT out of your eyes. It really was nice to see, you know?)
DIASOMNIA
You can’t distinguish who the fuck this person is, but they’re definitely tall.
“Who the fucking hell??? Is so fucking tall?” You ask in a whisper. “Hello?”
“Don’t talk to Malleus-sama that way, human!” A guy that looks similar to a cucumber yells.
“Shut up, my guy. Oh shit, sorry I probably sound really fucking rude hah.” You snort, pinching the nose of your bridge. “Um, what can I do for you? Or something?”
“You look pale.” A softer voice comments. You turn to look at him and oh fucking HELL he looks so... soft??? Princely???
“Woah.” You breathe, grabbing his face. He quickly pushes you off, but you don’t mind. “What the fuck... Your face??? Is?? Nice???”
“Thank... you...?” He says strangely, stepping away. “Da- LIlia-sama, I think we should leave. ___ doesn’t seem to feel well.”
“Nonsense, ___’s fine. It’s probably just lack of sleep.” You let out a bark at that.
“Hah, lack of sleep. More like lack of heat!” You giggle at that- why did you giggle at that it literally makes no sense. You turn to look at this ‘Lilia’ person and holy shit, is that a d i l f ?
“...Dilf?” You mutter, stetching out your hand to touch this short emo man. “Emo???”
“What is a dlif?” Emo man’s face contorts into confusion, one that is not often seen in his face. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that phrase...”
“Dad’s I’d Like to Fuck, because damn bro, you look- you look like you raised hot kids and set them on a frying pan do you get me, cuz like you’re also sexy? I don’t... yeah.” You nod  heavily at your sentence.
Emo man and prince-looking guy’s face contorts into a grin and a horrified look respectively. Tall man seems to have the same face as prince-looking guy, while Cucumber just... freezes.
“Are y’all okay??? You know what, I don’t- I don’t have- I’m not- I’m- I’VE GOT THE APPLE BOTTOM JEANS, BOOTS- BUTTS- BUTTS WITH THE FURRR, THE WHOLE CLUB WAS LOOKING AT HER~” You break out into a song, changing your voice to a country accent.
“SHE TOOK THE FLOOR AND GOT THE JEANS AND WENT LOW LOW LOW low low low low...” You sync in with the music, going lower to the beat until you lay your body on the ground and slowly lose sight (or blurry shapes) in front of you.
You don’t know what happens next, but you do know that someone’s riding a small cow. With big horns. And hair? With the bit of consciousness you have left, you reach up to touch the cow horns.
“Sick...” You mutter, and your hands fall slack on the small cow’s horns and you finally fall into well-deserved sleep.
EXTRA
“Lilia.”
"SEE SILVER, I TOLD YOU THAT PEOPLE WOULD-”
“I DON’T NEED TO HEAR IT, DAD!”
“NONE OF US DO!”
“Lilia.”
“I- I’M A DILF- I- I’M A DILF- HAH, I’M- OW OW OW... ow.. my back... oh, yes... Malleus?”
“I’m bringing the human inside.”
“Sure..- argh, ow ow ow... Silver, Sebek, come help me!”
“Yes, old man...”
“...”
“Pfft... a dilf... a dilf....” Malleus snickers at your naming choices, lighting up candles that you’ve strategically set. Once the lights are on, he can’t help but squint at the messiness of your dorm. He walks past the living room and opens your simple bedroom door, placing you on your bed. You don’t seem to be unbetrubed, but you squeezing something in the air. Ah, perhaps you’re looking for the cat?
Poof! Grim instantly nuzzles into you, and you both sign at the warm heat between you. Malleus smiles at the sight and leans closer to you, and whispers: “Happy New Year, child of man. Let’s make more memories together.” He gazes at your simple room, and his eyes falls at your bedside table. He smiles fondly at the picture on your bedside table. It’s you, Grim and him in Ramshackle’s living room, you making flower crown as you bitch on about physics, Grim agreeing and complaining as well.
He gives you a small pet on the head and disappears in neon butterflies.
“Shall we go?”
“Oh, young whisperer, you’re back. I take it ___ is back in their bedroom?”
A smile blooms on Malleus’ face. “Yes, now let’s go.”
“Dilf.. dilf...”
“I can’t... dilf... I can’t.. no...”

Playing in the Woods
(HappyFamily!AU one shot Ft. Cerise and Fraise) Warning: Very Fluffy, motherly love, bunny apple slices
On a sunny day, the breeze was fresh and carried the wonderful scent of the wilderness and flowers. Leaves and petals would flutter in the wind as the sounds of giggles floated around here and there. Rustling of the bushes and the crunch sound of grass was timidly present as a small figure ran through the semi thick forest. The small individual dashed past many trees looking for a good place to hide themselves among the thick terrain of nature that surrounded their home.
The young individual was only a small child. One with fair colored skin with cheeks that were marked with a few freckles and a light blush that was almost always constant. Along with dark hair that transitioned into a copper color towards the ends and was short cut all around except for a small braid on one side. With bangs that came just above her bright blue eyes that shined brightly in the sunlight. The small child wore a very light pink shirt with strawberry colored overall shorts, and white ankle frilly socks with almost black scalloped ballet flats. This small child who hide playfully in the forests found a suitable hiding location within the hollow truck of a very old and aged tree. And this lively cheerful child was named-
“Oh, Fraise~!” Rang out a female voice. “Wherever could you be~?” The voice came again as sounds of the foliage rustled in the distance.
The small child, Fraise, giggled within the shadow of the tree’s hollow trunk. Keeping her mouth covered; muffling her sounds as the older female called out and searched for her. She held herself tightly against the inner wall of the tree’s trunk as the rustling of grass and bushes came closer. Having a big grin across her face as she struggled to hold down her laughter.
“This forest is sooo big, it’s going to take forever to find my little Fraise.” The sweet voice chimed closer. “This must be my toughest challenge yet! To find such a worthy opponent!”
The young women looked around as she pushed some tree branches away and passed some bushes. That’s when she stopped behind an aged tree trunk and heard the murmurs of small giggles that echoed within. The woman brought up her hand and showed that her ring finger projected a bright yellow thread that lead to the inside of this old tree trunk. She smiled to herself at the realization of where her little adorable prey was.
“Ahh,” She exhaled as she looked up towards all the other tall trees in the forest, “Maybe they’re at the top of one of these huuuge trees!”
More small giggles escaped the hollow trunk, and she peered her eyes to the side of the entrance, where she slowly tipped toed to its opening.
“Or maybe…” she eyed the trunks opening. “They’re right here!!” She exclaimed cheerfully into the opening, as the small girl screamed with a delightful thrill of being surprised. The older woman got on her knees to reached in and grabbed the little one as she laughed and wiggled in her grasp. “I found you~!” The women playfully laughed as she hugged her small bundle of joy.
“No fair, cheated! You cheated!” Fraise giggled as she was held in the loving embrace.
“Cheated?” The gentle women stated, “Why, there’s no such thing in this game of ours!” as she began tickling Fraise’s sides. “Everything is up for grabs… even this cute tummy!” She tickled Fraise’s stomach as she laughed harder at the actions. Fraise laughed as the older woman kissed the side of her cheek repeatedly in a playful manner, and Fraise used her shoulder to scrunch away, trying to block away the tickling feelings from the onslaught of motherly kisses.
The women, named Cerise, pulled away from giving Fraise many kisses and smiled at her as she brushed Fraise’s hair into place. “Well, I think this is enough playing for now.”
“Wha?” Fraise began, “But I want to play more!” She exclaimed as she moved a bit away and standing firm with a bit of a pout.
Cerise, still on her knees looked at her daughter’s cute display of confidence, to persuade her to keep the game going. She only smiled at the young child before her. “I know you do, but its snack time now. Unless you want to wait till dinner tonight?”
Fraise still stood firm and kept her pout, thinking of the options. Then, out of nowhere, her stomach growled loud enough for the two to hear. She blushed as it became known that she was getting hungry. Cerise kept her giggles to a minimum but only displayed a soft smile.
She got up on her feet and picked up the small child into her arms, “That settles it, its snack time then!” As she began to walk, making sure to push any branches out of the way so that they didn’t get in her or Fraise’s way. As she did, she began to make small conversation with her daughter. “We’ll be eating a light snack since I’ll be making a big dinner for when daddy comes home tonight.”
Fraise’s eyes widen, “Daddy’s coming home tonight!?” she expressed loudly with pure excitement.
“That’s right, what do you think I should make for us tonight?” She asked curiously as she got closer to exiting the forest.
“Hmm… grill cheese!” Fraise announced with her arms in the air.
“Grilled cheese!?” She questioned back, but then responded back playfully. “Yes, I do think he would like those.” There was a pause until Cerise mumbled, “Maybe a tomato soup, too?” while thinking of what else she could put on the menu.
As they both excited the forest, Cerise walked a bit towards their home. She looked at some of the trees in the distance that displayed some fruit. She halted a bit, “You know what, why don’t you help me pick some apples so that I can make a pie for tonight?”
She knelt and settled Fraise onto the ground. “Okay!” She agreed with visual joy as she hopped up and down a bit.
“Alright, alright. Why don’t you go grab the basket from the side of the house and meet me by that apple tree over there.” Cerise pointed out the two locations of the basket and said apple tree.
Fraise gave a confident and eager smile of dedication. She began to rush over to the basket’s location. “I’ll meet you by tree!” Fraise yelled as she rushed as quick as she could to the basket. Cerise smiled as she also began to make her way to the tree with a casual walk as she watched her daughter hurry as quick as she could to do the task.
By the time she reached the tree, Fraise was already rushing quickly towards the tree with said basket in tow. She dropped the basket at the base of the tree and grabbed onto the surface of the tree’s bark. “I win! I got here first!”
Cerise gasps, “You did! You bested me with your speed! My, every day you get bigger, stronger, and now faster! How am I supposed to keep up!”
The young girl came up to Cerise’s legs, “I want to be big and strong like you, mama!”
“Ooh, big and strong you say? As big as this!?” She quickly turned the girl around and snatched her up, holding her high in the air as Fraise screamed with happy sounds from the rush of being picked up. Cerise brought Fraise over her head and settled the young girl on her shoulders. Fraise giggled as she held on. Cerise picked up the basket from the ground and walked towards one of the lower branches that was weighed down by some apples.
She pointed some out. “Fraise, can you get those right there for me?”
Fraise nodded with a “mhm” and reached out with her small hands to grab the red apples. She picked the biggest one she could grab onto and brought it over to drop it in front of the basket that Cerise held up with her hands.
The breeze ruffled the leaves as Fraise went ahead and picked a few more from the branch. Cerise would walk over to another branch filled with more ready to pick fruit and instructed Fraise to do the same task. Which was: to pick the tastiest ones. After a while their basket began to carry weight of the red fruit.
“Okay, that looks like enough for now.” Cerise mentioned as Fraise reached out for another.
“One more?” Fraise asked kindly.
“Okay, one more, but that’s it. Unless you want to be eating apple pie every day for the next two weeks.” She mentioned with a sassy tone.
Fraise grinned as she picked the last one and dropped it into the basket, adding to more of its weight. Cerise walked away from the tree and settled the basket down to give her hands a break.
“Alright then, my little helper. Thank you for the hard work!” She brought her hands to her daughter’s side and lifted her up and over her head again, placing Fraise carefully back on the ground. “Now go wash up so I can get your snack ready.”
“Okay!” She began to run again. “I’mma race you, mama!” Fraise shouted as Cerise picked up the weighted basket.
Cerise laughed at Fraise’s playfulness. “You already got a head start, that’s not fair!” Smiling as she lifted the basket and holding it with both arms.
Fraise giggled as she ran towards the front of the house. Yet, in her excitement, she lost balance and started to stumble. Each step she tried to recover herself but, in the end, she tripped and skid a bit as she landed harshly from the speed and force across the dirt and grass.
Cerise took notice as this happened in front of her and began to pace quickly towards her. “Fraise? You okay?” She asked.
Fraise turned around to sit up as dirt and some grass leaves covered a bit of her face, shirt, and the bottom of her overall shorts, along with her knee being scratched up and palms sore from trying to brace from the impact. Fraise frowned sadly as she looked herself over and noticed her knee was scratched up and starting to bleed. Seeing the visuals, the pain connected then, and she began to sob.
“Waahhh!” Fraise cried, rubbing the dirt out of her face and hair.
Cerise came up to her little girl and placed the basket down swiftly as she looked over the injury. “There, there, I’m here. Let me see.” She dusted the dirt away lightly around the injured area. There was a scratch that was more prominent in the middle of Fraise’s knee which was surrounded by red marks and small dots of light blood coming through the skin. She did her best to sooth the child as she softly cupped the side of her crying face with the warmth of her palm. “The apples can wait, let’s get you inside, sweetheart.”
Fraise still softly cried as Cerise picked her up gently, careful to pay mind to the injury. Fraise wrapped her arms around Cerise and hid her face into the nook of her neck. Cerise tightly embraced her daughter as she walked back to the house.
As Cerise entered the home, she walked towards the kitchen and opened one of the cabinets to retrieve the first aid kit. Fraise sniffled as she watched her mother open the box and get some packages of antibiotic wipes and a band aid suitable for knees cuts. Cerise brought those over with her as she settled Fraise down on the kitchen counter next to the sink.
Carefully, Cerise folded over the hem of the shorts to expose Fraise’s cuts. Fraise winced at the sensitive pain as she still held tears from earlier. In the silence, there was only Fraise’s quiet hiccups of sobs and Cerise preparing to care for the injury by grabbing a clean washcloth and turning on the sinks faucet.
“My poor baby,” Cerise stated as she ran the cloth under the warm water. Fraise wiped away her tears a bit, but still they continued to rise to the surface due to the pain from her knee. “Always so excited and eager to run off on your own. Just like your father.” Cerise mentioned as she brought the warm clean cloth to her child’s sensitive skin.
Gently she put some pressure to the cut to halt the bleeding and to wipe the blood away in one go. Fraise flinched at the pressure, but Cerise cooed her. “It’s alright, I just need to clean this up a bit, okay?” She spoke as Fraise lightly nodded timidly.
Softly she pressed another clean area of the cloth to the wound and removed any dirt and blood that came with it. She brought the cloth under the running warm water to soak it again and rinsed away the dirt and blood. Coming back to lightly tap on the wound as carefully as she could to not cause her little bundle of joy more pain. Once she felt the wound was cleaned up a bit, she drapped the towel over the sinks edge and shifted over to grab the small package that contained the antibiotic wipe.
Cerise opened the package and removed the moist wipe and gently held Fraise’s knee. “This might hurt just a bit, but it’s to make sure you don’t get an infection from the cut, okay?”
Fraise nodded again and trusted her mother to help fix the injury. Lightly, Cerise wiped at the cut and Fraise’s knee twitched as she felt a slight burn from the damp tissue. “There, just a bit more.” Cerise mentioned as she gave a few more wipes. Slowly the pain went away, but she still felt the soreness from the nerves and muscles. Cerise tossed the dirty tissue into the sink to clean up later and reached over to grab the bandage. Opening it, she peeled away the paper wrapping and carefully aligned the band-aid to the center of his cut. Slowly sticking it to Fraise knee and pulling the ends of the paper off so that the flaps could adhere to the skin, keeping it in place.
“There we go!” Cerise stated warmly; crinkling up the plastic papers in her hand and tossing them aside onto the counter. “Is that a little better?” She asked her.
“Mhm, still sore.” Fraise said with a soft voice.
“I know, sweetheart. It’s going to be sore for a while, but you’re okay now.” Telling her as she picked up her daughter into her arms and carried her across the house. She entered Fraise’s bedroom where she gently laid her down on the bed. “Now you wait here while I go get those apples and make you a snack, okay?”
As she was about to walk away, Fraise called out to her, “Mama, don’t go.”
She turned around and held her face, smiling lovingly at the small girl. “I’ll be right back, sweetheart, I promise. I’m just going to get the apples, okay. And then I’ll be right back.” Fraise nodded as she held her hand, slowly letting it out of the others grasp. Cerise smiled at her one more time before leaving the room completely. Once outside, she gathered the basket again and brought them back inside the home. Taking them to the kitchen and placing the whole thing next to the sink. She took out the medical wipe along with the crunched-up bandage wrappers and threw them away into the bin. She came back to the task of washing each apple down and placing it on the other side of the counter to let them dry out. Once done with all that, she grabbed one apple that looked the tastiest in her eyes and began to peel and cut them up into fun little rabbit slices. Satisfied with her work she walked back to Fraise’s room where she laid back a bit waiting for her.
Fraise noticed her and sat up, “Mama’s back!”
Cerise smiled at her daughter with much love in her expression. “I told you I would be, didn’t I?” She approached her and showed the plate filled with many cute bunny slices. “Look I even brought you little bunnies to cheer you up.”
Fraise’s eyes widen and glimmered at the display of the fresh apple slices. “Cute bunnies!”
“That’s right!” She grabbed one and playfully moved it in front of Fraise’s face. “I saw them outside hopping around and quickly snatched them all up!”
“Silly, mama, it’s just apple.” She giggled as Cerise played with the food in front of her.
“Ooh, are you sure? They might look like apples, but you never know when they might… hop away!” She exclaimed as she jerked the plate upwards and let the slices toss in the air. Fraise laughed at her actions. Cerise giggled softly too as she watched the small girl’s cute expressions of joy.
She brought the slice back to Fraise and let her grab it by herself. “Here, sweetheart.”
“Thank you, mama.” Fraise said as she brought the slice to her mouth and took her first bite. Fraise’s cheeks blushed at the sweetness that came with the taste. “Itsh yummy!”
Cerise placed the plate to the side of her and let the little one snack from there. Watching each action. Fraise would take another slice, munch on it, and enjoy each bite. Once she was all done with the snack, Cerise moved the plate away to the side table. “How’s your knee feeling?”
Fraise, who was distracted by the food came to remember the injury and brought back the sore feeling again. “Still hurt…”
“Hmm,” She gave a concerned look, but as she looked over to the bookshelf she sprang and idea. “Well, why don’t I read you a little story then before I start on dinner?”
Fraise nodded as Cerise got up and walked over to the bookshelf. She picked up one of Fraise’s favorites, The Girl in the Tower, and came back to sit on the other side of the bed next to her daughter. Once settled, Fraise cuddled up to Cerise, who brought her arm around the small child to let her in closer so that they could read along and look at the pictures.
Once they got in their comfortable positions, Cerise began to read the story to her. As she started to narrate the story, Fraise read along, scanning his eyes across each sentence, or keeping her eyes on the images illustrated in the book. Towards the middle of the story, Fraise began to nod off and let her eyes slowly close, but she would be awoken slightly with each page turn. It was toward the end of the story that she completely fell asleep against her mother.
“The girl was surprised to have met a hero right from the pages of a fairy tale. The hero was surprised to meet a smart and powerful girl who shared his curiosity about the world and a strong sense of justice. Neither was eager to go their separate ways… Hm?” Cerise stopped reading as she noticed her daughter reacting less but saw her fast asleep and breathing calmly.
Cerise smiled and place the book to the other bed stand. Coming back to gently moved Fraise so that she laid her head softly against the pillow. As she got up, she covered her daughter with the cozy bed sheet and brushed her hair tenderly. Leaning in and giving a small loving kiss to her head as she slept.
Slowly she walked towards the bedroom door and looked back at the sweet peaceful state the little girl was in. She grinned, turned off the lights and went about to create a dinner for a family she thanked the Brothers for.
