Here's a source to back up that this does use a lot of energy. You probably charge your phone once, maybe twice a day. Imagine thousands, millions of people doing that over and over for their characters in one game? You never get an AI generation right the first time or the second. Third. Fourth. Fifth.
This is awful, actually.
If AI is going to exist, I'm okay with this use. Purely recreational, not taking up creative spaces, supplementing another experience. That's fine if the source is ethical. But a video game shouldn't have such a high toll.
Friendly reminder to my moots that Inzoi’s build mode uses generative AI for the creation of things like art and wallpaper and it’s not worth melting our planet for a vidya game thank you

so the op of that anti-voting post DMed me just now, transcript follows:
slash-dot-com
even if all democratic systems were inherently always going to be "inadequate" i think our american democracy is severely flawed in glaring ways, its just literally antiquated and i think there are much better democratic systems. our voting system is not representative of the people either, which almost everybody admits, i'm not saying theres some nefarious mastermind behind it, but it is a design flaw, whether the flaw was made on purpose or on mistake. its easy to quit american democracy because it doesnt even seem to Want you to participate, like from so many factors its difficult to engage with it in any meaningful way
whetstonefires
yeah it's not a fantastic system
it's just also pretty pointless to try to punish it for that by leaving it in the hands of people who hate you
it won't get its feelings hurt and try to woo us back
i used to be really mad about how stupid and ugly it is but the more history i've studied and the older i've gotten the more it's been like, oh human society is a clown show always
slash-dot-com
but for several election cycles the popular vote nor the general will of the people have even impacted the people who are elected, the people who hate us are in power because the system is designed to benefit them
whetstonefires
i mean?? biden did in fact defeat trump, and the democrats did make gains in congress in both the last two cycles
slash-dot-com
my vote in my state genuinely does not matter in federal elections, in local elections yeah sometimes it does, but there needs to be an overhaul on our democracy and its election process so its more reflective of the people. currently its so broken that voting legit doesnt change anything
biden sucks
whetstonefires
he sucks less than trump tho????
like to a screamingly significant extent
slash-dot-com
i'm trying to make a more general and large scale point than one single election cycle and sitting president
whetstonefires
and i've made my counter point which is that not voting is not a constructive response to the problem
slash-dot-com
doing other things than voting is just as effective if not more so than voting, so not voting in a broken democracy isn't nonconstructive
whetstonefires
and in fact the broad tendency of idealists and leftists to be disengaged from the political process because it's dirty and inadequate, especially at the local level, is the *cause* of many of the systemic problems
doing other things can be constructive, but not voting is a non-action
and advocating against voting is a *harmful* action
so it's not constructive
the other things and the voting are independent of one another
slash-dot-com
thats just really ill conceived, i'm honestly just surprised by that response, you should really think more deeply about this. i'm not sure what you think this way of thinking and approaching politics is accomplishing
and then i couldn't send anything else (it was going to be a ?? because that didn't really follow naturally but before they said that i'd been typing a bit listing all the voting-related activism that it made sense to dip on due to alienation from the process, because energy and funding better spent elsewhere etc, but opposing voting itself was not in the same category) because they blocked me, which is just rude. you started this conversation man!
also i can't figure out how to make tumblr let me block them back.
so i made a post about it lmao.
i still don't know what positive good they think arguing against voting is supposed to achieve. like why is that a good use of energy.

I've been seeing those george neg tweets about how he hasn't tweeted about pride month or juneteenth (despite saying happy juneteenth on stream) but using those as an example to drive the point that he basically gets away with not saying much at all and saying how if it were dream he would be receiving backlash but george gets away with not doing much.
And its like for a first, i understand how people might be disappointed but at the same time many other CC's haven't spoken about pride or juneteenth and its fine....? Like if your CC isn't an activist...they aren't an activist. That's not to say your CC doesn't support these events they just don't feel the need to tweet about it on their platform despite speaking about it in their streams. And comparing how George stays silent to Dream and arguing how dream would get backlash is odd, dream is more outspoken on twitter and whatever he'd say good or bad will inevitably give him backlash because anti's exist, also him not tweeting about juneteenth i suppose would be different since its an american holiday supporting black americans. George or any CC from the UK for that matter; Jack, Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, Smajor, Ponk etc etc haven't tweeted about juneteenth because in the UK there's a different date to commerate the end of slavery.
Like george not saying anything isnt inherently bad, it doesn't harm anyone, i can see how people are disappointed about it but saying stuff like 'why cant he do it when his bestfriends tweeted about it?' Or 'if dream did that he would get hate' is the wrong way to ask him to show his support, and also ignores the fact that again, Juneteeth is not a thing in the UK.
i would like to preface this by saying that i'm white and non-american, so i'm definitely not the person that should speak on this. i am going to report my humble opinion here because you asked me, but take my words for what are worth (basically nothing)
if i'm being honest i never understood this entitlement to bare-minimum "activism". if my favorite content creator makes a tweet wishing everyone an happy pride month i'm happy about it and i appreciate that they're trying to cultivate a safe space for me in their audicence. if they don't make a tweet about pride, i just don't care? like i wouldn't even notice that cishet man number 34 hasn't tweeted anything if it wasn't for the people calling that out.
overall, while i get where they're coming from, in wanting popular content creators to use their platforms as best as they can, you can't coerce them. you are allowed to make a judgement on them for this, you can say "i would rather support content creators that are not afraid of supporting me and possiby alienating a part of their audience to show what they believe in", but wasting your energy in poking a probably uneducated content creator that will likely only tweet "happy pride month :)" really seems fruitless to me.
it's not your job to educate them. i'm only here to watch them play minecraft, i don't care about keeping track of their online presence and nitpicking everything they do or don't do. I used to be a bit like this i think, and I still personally don't appreciate that george is so careful in being neutral (though this doesn't refer to the pride month tweet specifically), but it doesn't matter. i can be critical of the content i consume while understanding how relevant and constructive my criticism would be in a specific situation. if i'm interested in online activism, i will uplift the voices of actual actvists, people who know what they're doing and advocate for an actual change. i won’t overshadow the voices that should be leaders of this moment to call out a minecraft youtuber and get a few thousand likes.
even if you get george to tweet "happy pride month, love is love" what have you achieved? is it even worth all this? is it even worth anything to get an happy pride month if you had to chase him and threaten twitter cancellation for this? like at this point if he came and said "i'm sorry i haven't tweeted anything before, happy pride month" i would count it as not tweeting anything, it would be just pure performative actions to get twitter to calm down. sorry i don’t need to get my validation as a queer person from georgenotfound acknowledging my existence.
keeping track of who has tweeted and who hasn’t is performative at best and straight up useless at worst, instead of making a thread of all the times georgenotfound stayed silent, retweet resources that can help, show your support in a positive and effective way. at the end of the day, in my opinion we should start treating content creators for what they are, and if you don't like how they manage their online presence, if that doesn't make you feel safe or comfortable, it's your choice to leave and support someone else. it’s not your job to educate them.
i don't want to speak about juneteenth in particular, my feelings are about the same, but admittedly i am in a very privileged position, so who the fuck am i to say "you shouldn't expect this and that from content creators"? this seems like a more delicate issue that i probably shouldn't speak over, though i don't understand why george, british white man, would even know about this. i never knew about juneteenth until this year, if i'm being honest.

My Sides
Note: I decided to make depression a disorder that impacts me and my sides to varying degrees depending on a variety of factors.
Apathy/Rue: Over sleep, disasociation (which can be handy during a crisis), laziness, relaxing, calming down, zoning out, and meh days. Favorite hobby is doing nothing. Doesn't care what pronouns you use for them. Depression causes them to be heightened to the point of causing emotional numbness and loss of all motivation.
Appearance: Perpetual bedhead. Short brown hair with two pale baby blue hair streaks due to fading. Wears an oversized baggy mens cotton tee with a few tiny holes in it and a chest pocket (for candy). They only wear pants when they have to. Otherwise, it's tiny cotton shorts that barely cover them. Owns one pair of flip flops (that they never wear). Fuck bras and shaving.
*
Restlessness/Max: Over obsessions, compulsions, anxiety, worry, fight/flight/friend/freeze, cognative distortions, and intrusive thoughts. Just a ball of nervousness and overthinking. Loves to research, fixate on topics, theorize, plan for "what if?" scenarios, and overshare about their latest thing. Bad with directions. Has a thing about symmetry. Constantly fidgeting or pacing. Does not do chill. The most likely to cause people to say "that's fucked up" when talking about something they thought of. Most likely to have a friend or freeze response in a dangerous situation. Will bolt when in danger if you trigger their flight response, even if where they end up puts them in more danger. Will act like a rabid animal and attack if you somehow trigger their fight response. They can make Logic harder to hear, but whatever gets through can help them balance out. Apathy can block their fight/flight/friend/freeze response. Depression causes their intrusive thoughts to become much darker.
Appearance: Somewhat messy short brown hair from constantly running their fingers through it. Glasses are a bright color (blue or purple?) so they are harder to misplacd and are either on their face or sitting on top of their head. Eyebags. Long soft scarf around their neck which provides comfort and something to mess with. Long sleeve shirt that's a solid muted or soft color as to not draw attention. A cami underneath just in case. Darker bluejeans (because they hide stains, are durable, and what if period!) with a small flashlight hooked on one of the loops. A hoodie tied around their waist. White sneakers. A wristlet purse with a few emergency items. A hidden necklace with emergency information.
*
Emotion/River: Over feelings, nostalgia, empathy, love, comforting others, gender identity, and sexuality. Aggressively cares about their friends. Would move heaven and earth to help others. Is a bit of a hoarder. Gender fluctuates between demigirl, bigender, and female. Loves art and fiction. Is both childish and profound. Loves moodrings. Depression either mutes all their emotions but sadness (and sometimes anger) or leaves her comatose.
Appearance: Short brown hair is soft and a little fluffy with two bright blue streaks at the front. Bright clothes with lots of colors. Jewelery that suits their mood. Has 2 colorful pronoun bracelets. Always wears at least one mood ring. Beautiful colorful tattoos without a unified theme (although many are cute or look like they came from a cartoon or comic). Several ear piercings and one sparkly nostril. Wears eyeliner and lip tint when she feels like dressing fem and occasionally uses eyeshadow. Clothes are usually androgynous. T-shirt has writing on it that made her smile. Shirt has a crew cut on "they days" and a v-neck on "she days". Reflective rainbow colored novelty purse. Sandals. Owns one floofy long skirt. The rest of their bottoms are shorts, capris, or pants. They usually wear capris.
*
Logic/Jo: Over intelligence, knowledge, curiosity, theorizing, the logical side of beliefs, and objectivity. Loves learning and reading non-fiction, but is fond of certain fictional works. Schedules, pay the bills, and self care. Open minded. Loves to research and has a massive library of knowledge, but due to the multi-dimensional nature of their room, information sometimes ends up stored in the wrong place. Fascinated by religions on an intellectual, historical, and cultural standpoint and uses what she learns to be mindful and respectful. Can counteract cognative distortions, but can also cause or amplify fixations on her quest for knowledge. Stubborn. Depression causes them to have difficulty functioning and sometimes become distorted until they find reasons to do dangerous or harmful things.
Appearance: Short brown hair is always professional. Simple glasses have dark blue, almost black frames. No piercings or tattoos. Cotton polo and slacks. Only jewelery is an elegant stirling necklace with a long chain and a large simple diamond shaped charm (one side says "She" while the other says "They"). Comfortable professional black loafers.
*
Creativity/Journey: Over inspiration, creativity, brainstorming, certain types of problem solving, ingenuity, out of the box thinking, writing, singing, photography, other creations, worldbuilding, jokes, puns, acting, and certain types of lying to others. Frequently goes on tangents. Run on sentences. Can be a little too energetic and random. Once inspired, they can't stop thinking about something until it's done or they run out of inspiration or drive. Has a wall of books for cataloguing ideas and unfinished projects (often taking from several old ones to build a new one), but the order has no rhythm or reason (even to them). Can be heightened or hindered by Restlessness. Apathy can help Creativity with daydreams and less fear, but make it difficult for them to take action. Depression makes them barely function, save acting and negative ideas.
Appearance: Dark purple hair with several bright blue hair steaks. Ear piercings and one sparkly dermal near their left eye. Purple eyeliner. Modified a pair of comfy overall shorts (aka shortalls) to be backless with a halter top fit (instead of the traditional tank top fit) so they would have lots of pockets to store stuff while having the most skin exposed to show off their extensive tattoos. Tends to wear a strapless binder or halter top underneath to avoid boob slips. Runs around in socks indoors, but has hiking boots for outside. Tattoos are artistic with heavy symbolism as well as quotes.
*
Ambiguity/Duo: Over morally gray areas, lying to others and oneself, telling the truth to others and oneself, spotting both deceit and honesty in others, superstitions, the illogical side of beliefs, seeing the good in the bad and visa versa, sarcasm, and occasional devil's advocate. Not quick to judge. Sees gender as a social construct, but also that some people require it. Sees religion as something that is not necessary for them to be happy, but knows it is important to others and will fight for those rights (as long as it doesn't hurt the individual, others, or society itself). Balances the line of what is and is not socially acceptable. Personal truths. Has a very "you do you" attatude. Probably enjoys yoga and certain fiction, especially ones that subvert expectations and/or tropes. Depression causes them to become skewed. Because of this, some things become amplified (lies to self and others, seeing the bad in good,...), some things become weakened (honesty, seeing the good in bad, spotting honesty,...), and some things become tainted (deceit is spotted when none is there, beliefs become tainted,...).
Appearance: Right half of face is white while the left half is black. A gray part in the middle where one color fades into the other that's about the width of their lips. Hair and clothing follow the same theme with the only color being their blue hazel eyes. Hair is held back with a metallic silver headband. Button up shirt with a sheer back (similar look to this). One glove on the left side. Bottoms are pinstripe palazzo pants or culottes. Ballet slippers. Has an ornimental tattoo on their back and one on each ankle.
----
Other facts...
My sides all have their individual jobs and functions, but they also work together on certain things.
My morality comes from Emotion, Logic, and Ambiguity. They work together despite their frequent disagreements.
Beliefs come from Logic and Ambiguity. Emotion can help by attaching a feeling to each belief.
If my ego is hurt, it effects Creativity, Emotions, and/or Logic depending on which was targeted. The same goes for the opposite (such as when praised).
Having my ego hurt make Restlessness freak out and overthink everything.
Despite Emotion having main control over gender identity (mine being femfluidflux), Logic has some input. Occasionally, Apathy or Ambiguity have a say.
Creativity literally created a new type of clothing for their needs. The halter shortalls currently do not exist to my knowledge.
All the sides have a varying level of fondness for cats. Apathy respects their chill. Restlessness finds them calming as well as a good way to release nervous energy. Emotion's heart just melt from the adorableness and wants all snuggles. Logic appreciates the proven medical benefits of having a pet. Creativity loves making cat toys, taking photos, and playing games with cats. Ambiguity admires their independence and controlled chaos. Their opinions on other animals varies.
None of my sides are entirely good or entirely bad. They also balance each other. (Apathy can help Emotion and Restlessness chill. Emotion can help Apathy when they get heightened. Restlessness can help spur the others into action as well as fixate to help Logic and Creativity. Emotion gives Logic and Creativity encouragement as well as helping make sure writing hits right in the feels. Logic helps the others with facts and helps break through negative thinking and spirals. Creativity helps connect thoughts in new and exciting ways and helps Restlessness find new ways to coop. Ambiguity helps the others make the hard decisions and keeps Logic from becoming too ridged.)

BUG HOTEL- UPCYCLING AND ENVIRONMENT
POLLINATORS
In addition, I decided to make something out of old scaffolding. My mum had them in the garden as a shelving unit with ornaments and spare plant pots in. Although not wasted, I felt it could be better utilized to employ the positive encouragement of up-cycling.
After careful consideration it was decided to revamp them into a multi-leveled bug hut. Painting them in wood paint to liven them up and also make them attractive to insects who are attracted to bright colours. The paint is also non-toxic so won’t harm them.
Once the paint has dried, the construction followed by  filling each section with different natural materials. Such as: twigs, pinecones moss and bark. The remainder were filled with old spare bricks, canes and plant pots.
Providing shelter and safety to a variety of inhabitants and encourage a thriving habitat.
The RSPB website advocates the use of the following items :]
dead wood and loose bark for creepy crawlies like beetles, centipedes, spiders and woodlice
holes and small tubes (not plastic) for solitary bees made out of bamboo, reeds and drilled logs
larger holes with stones and tiles, which provide the cool, damp conditions frogs and toads like – if you put it in the centre you’ll give them a frost-free place to spend the winter (they’ll help eat slugs)
dry leaves, sticks or straw for ladybirds (they eat aphids) and other beetles and bugs
corrugated cardboard for lacewings (their larvae eat aphids, too)
dry leaves which mimic a natural forest floor
https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/give-nature-a-home-in-your-garden/garden-activities/build-a-bug-hotel/
Finally, adding a roof to allow them to stay dry. This bug hotel was one of the first creations in the garden. Over the last few weeks I have observed more wildlife in the garden. Particularly in the sections with canes, which have housed loads of solitary bees who have began to build nests. In the pinecone area with tiles loads of spiders and centipedes are present.
This creation is mutually beneficial it gives the children a learning opportunity to explore wildlife closely and safely also gives a haven to the wildlife which may otherwise have no habitat to thrive. During the rainy periods it has given shelter to the bees that have housed  in the tubes.
The above elements create an emphasis on the creative freedom that up-cycling allows you. Which could potentially inspire you to put your own creative personality in perhaps your own garden; adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Both the tyre planters and the bug hotel are built for the purpose of encouraging wildlife, insects and ultimately pollinators. The emphasis on the importance of pollinators is crucial for our survival.
EVIDENCE - RHS BOOK poliantors quotes.
The importance of conserving these environments is previlant now more than ever and is reciprocally favorable to everyone. Supporting the philosophy further regarding participation and community and expanding further into our environment. Putting emphasis on protection and maintenance of habitats which are becoming endangered and are also vital for our own survival.
Encouraging children to create their own ‘minibeast hotels’ also adds an additional element of pride. Allowing them to visually seeing the fruits of their labour.

“insect pollinators including bees and moths are in decline but you can help them by creating an attractive habitat for them”
“We rely on pollinators for the majority of our food crops, yet pollinating insect pollinators are in trouble. You can help to boost their falling numbers by making your garden a little patch of pollinator paradise that meets their needs. Attract pollinators with pollen-baring, nectar rich flowers that bloom with different times of year, and night scened plants and larval food plants for buttlerfly and moth caterpillars and provide plenty of places for pollinators to shelter”.
“ Studies show that pollinators are disappearing fast, with up to 50% of all bee species threatened in some European countries due to loss of habitat, changing climate, spread of pests, disease and pesticides being contributing factors”.
3 species of bumble bee are now extinct in the UK.
In the Uk alone, more than half the butterfly and moth species have declines over the past 50 years.
Moths ( elephant hawk) like red companion and they are important pollinators.
195
Plants like strawberry and beans need pollinating.
Crutiial role for pollinators honey bee pollinates 70% of around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world.
Field beans and clover which feed live stock for meat and milk.
If pollinators disappeared, so would many of the plants that rely on them exclusively for pollination
Urban gardens in Europe and North America can support higher density of bumble bees and solitary bees than farm land,
You can help pollinators by using plants to attract these important insects to your garden
Most pollinators are bees, flies, wasps , beetles and butterflies and moths.
They pollinate the edibles in our gardens
196
how to help pollinators
an ohs study of insects visiting garden plants in the UK found that the best way to grow a mixtuer of native, northern and southern hemisphere plants.
go for variety - pollinators are attracted to different shapes of flowers, so it makes sense to choose a range of sizes and shapes. Scientists are still researching why certain plants are more attractive to insects.
Hoverflies prefer flat ion flowers e.g angelica
Plants with tubular flowers, such as foxgloves are more likely to be visited by insects with a long proboscis eg. butterflies, moths and some bumble bees.
Vegetable gardens attract pollinators with the flowers of borage, chives mint, rosemary and sage.
Place in the sun-
pollinators, especially butterflies prefer flowers in sunny spots. This is partly because sunshine can affect nectar production and also perhaps because insects don’t need to expend as much in warm energy conditions.
Try to provide nectar all year round.
February to October when pollinators are more active.
THEY ADVISE Multi story bug hotel. For insects made using natural materials will provide shelter for all types of mini beasts.
197- pollinators  and other invertebrates can overwinter in. Solitary bees like to nest in hollow plant stems or bamboo canes. 1.5-2 cm in diameter and 10-20cm long.
avoid pesticides.
invisible colors - it pays to include a range of hues in your garden beaucse of certain colurs, while pleasing to us, are less appealing to some pollinators.
Studies have found that red for instance, is generally less attractive to insects.
Bees- and insects with good vision - see better in the value spectrum and beyond into the UV range.
Many flowers have UV markings on them , which are invisible to humans  but appear differently to insects.
Scientists think these markings act like landing strips, guiding pollinators to nectar and pollen.
!98 Wild flower meadow
Meadows full of different kinds of flowers and grasses are home to, and feeding grounds for many kinds of insects. These insects, in turn, provide food for birds and small mammals.
They have disappeared from the country side.
You can help revive these habitats by planting a mini meadow in your own green space.

Moral Truth and Rewilding
Durkheim once described social science as the “science of morality” and it is with an empirical approach that my research tries to uncover the moral truths underpinning why people do what they do – specifically why they give their working lives towards one type of species management, and not another.
This post is not about my findings, but does attempt to find a moral basis for rewilding, as many people do in their own way here in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
In 1971, two great thinkers came together to debate the meaning of human nature; Michel Foucault and Noam Chomsky.
Michel Foucault
Tumblr media
Noam Chomsky
Tumblr media
Here, I look at what conclusions we might draw from two parallel philosophies and how they may or may not contribute to a moral justification for rewilding.
Morals are Universal
Noam Chomsky believes that justice and moral truth is innate to humans. It is a part of our biological being, the ‘biological’ is here synonymous with the ‘fundamental’. An innate sense of justice and moral truth is the greater part of what makes us human. He argues that human nature exists outside of culture.
For Chomsky, language is the manifestation of this nature. A new-born has a pre-programmed ability to produce language through uniquely human networks in the brain. For Chomsky, language is not simply acquired post-partum through culture and learning, there are pre-defined biological limits to its production. The child makes sense of the world through language, forming moral beliefs, and there are pre-determined frameworks within which it must do so.
This leads Chomsky to conclude that morals exist as truths outside of our conscious selves. Moral truths may be uncovered within ourselves and are therefore universal.
For Chomsky, it is a noble aim to search deep within our inner-most self and critique cultural influences so that we may come closer to moral truth. Society places obstacles between human nature and the uncorrupted moral being that might have been in a perfect world. Those obstacles are unavoidable because they are culturally constructed and humans exist within cultures. Because we can only produce language in a cultural setting, even though we have innate structures informing the process, humans struggle to shake off dogmas – such as religion – without disposing of interaction and language itself.
It is Chomsky’s view that one of the most obstructive cultural influences on finding moral truth is the state capitalist system and it is our prerogative to critique it.
Moral Relativism
Foucault also critiqued the state capitalist system and, in fact, any system which he perceived as existing to wield power over the masses. Even more vehemently than Chomsky who focussed on capitalist systems, Foucault rejected the legitimacy of all social systems which he believed disguised power and exploitation; especially modern scientific fields which he saw as part of an insidious rise of technical-rational regimes of power. Foucault lambasted modern medicine, especially the treatment of the ‘insane’, the prison system and what he saw as the de-humanising of sexuality through regimes of power.
Foucault rejected Marxist theory in a way Chomsky does not but came to similar conclusions on what was wrong with the world, via a different philosophy.
Foucault disagreed with Chomsky that each of us is born with an innate framework within which our language and morals will eventually develop. He disagreed that society merely places obstacles in the way of moral truth. For Foucault, it was those ‘obstacles’ that are themselves the producers of moral truth.
In other words, the society in which we live, is all there is to tell us right from wrong. Social structures shape belief and morality, and crucially, those structures are produced by, and benefit, the powerful. The structures disguise power and cannot easily be resisted.
For Foucault, nothing is objectively right or wrong, particularly if society says so.
Foucault’s worldview was about as ‘amoral’ as it gets, although he would be the first to point out that he too was subject to the use of language, predominantly French, which historically underwent a very deliberate process of homogenisation reinforcing the state.
Perhaps Foucault was chronically anti-establishment, so much so that the need to fight power could be considered a moral truth he believed to be universal.
Postmodern self-consciousness
Whether one agrees with Chomsky, that our moral self has the answers, albeit buried beneath cultural baggage, or with Foucault, that we must deconstruct regimes of power to challenge morals which only serve the establishment and the elite; one might begin to feel self-conscious.
Being human seems to be a very troubled position when objective morality is either practically unknowable or non-existent.
Must we continue to do things, but without any true moral justification? Must we act without the objective moral truths that make facts and the decisions we base on them meaningful?
If this is the time of postmodern self-consciousness, and we are besieged by the “scepter of subjectivity”, it might be argued that we should give up on being quite so human and look to the non-human for leadership.
What of nature’s wildness, which rewilding aims for?
Nature’s wildness, here, is taken as non-human nature, that which is outside of human control.
Letting things which we perceive to be non-human take back a little control can be cathartic. It might be argued that it couldn’t be more harmful than throwing more emotional energy at failing epistimes, at totalitarian ways of thinking.
What if humans took a few decades to decide on what is important, giving nature the political space to make itself known in the meantime; democratising the world and producing “a parliament of things”?
Non-human nature would take on more authority running planet Earth with its diverse goals, whilst humans formulate a less authoritarian, less humanist, stance. In other words; humans would make room, in its broadest sense, for wildness.
Justifying rewilding… or not
Rolling back the human enterprise would have to be a gradual, collective decision in the spirit of the uncertainty it tries to embrace, not a fascist take-over.
Believers in less human influence would need to advocate for humans to have fewer children, taking practical steps to make this more achievable.
Rewilders would have to vow to consume less, and in a very real sense, rather than merely subscribing to the green revolution of consuming ‘less extra’ every year.
Rewilders would have to push for land to be set aside as wilderness, the spatial antithesis to humanity.
And here lies the paradox, rewilders would have to take a chance in producing, or asserting the discovery of, new moral truths in order to take a step back.
Rewilders would have to be certain of their uncertainty. Certain that they are prepared to accept less control over their lives because they don’t have all the answers. They would have to be sure that what they practice, they can justifiably preach…  that all humans should follow their example and that their actions reflect a moral truth. The retreat would have to be coordinated. From a Foucauldian perspective, this might risk producing a new regime of power.
Whether rewilding is just part of the process of uncovering what it is to be human, the moral truth within us, or whether it is undertaken as resistance to human regimes of power; as the return of agency to nature, it is complicated, unsurprisingly, by our faith in humanity.
If we define ourselves through difference then perhaps humans’ very identity would be at stake through rewilding. A true embrace of nature could be an embrace of everything we are not; and thus a radical unseating of the self.
Does rewilding, at its extreme, constitute cultural cannibalism and if so, could we get behind this morally?

Will Red Meat Cause Your Heart to Explode?
Folks, I’m excited to bring you this book excerpt from The Carnivore Code. Author Dr. Paul Saladino is one of the best informed thought leaders and advocates of the carnivore diet. Few things conjure more fear in the hearts and minds of the general population than the big, bad cholesterol monster and the associated trepidation that red meat will cause our arteries to become filled with plaque. After all, we’ve been told by cardiac surgeons that when they scoop plaque out of the arteries in our heart or neck, it looks just like animal fat, eggs, or butter.
In this excerpt, we’ll debunk the notion that eating animal meat, fat, or organs is bad for our heart and blood vessels and slay this final beast once and for all. We’ll see that these false notions have been based on more misleading epidemiological literature and how interventional and mechanistic studies tell a very different story. Come, brave adventurers, our destiny of discarding unfounded ideologies and reclaiming the vibrant health of our ancestors awaits!
The Basics of Lipoproteins and Cholesterol
The word “cholesterol” is often used colloquially to refer to all of the lipoproteins in our blood, but technically, cholesterol is a steroid backbone type of molecule that is used to make all sorts of vital compounds in human physiology. Our body makes around 1,200 milligrams of cholesterol every day for many important purposes, including the proper formation of all of our cell membranes.
The fat we eat is absorbed from our intestines and packaged as triglycerides with dietary cholesterol into a type of lipoprotein known as chylomicrons, marked with apolipoprotein B48. These particles circulate in the blood stream, dropping off their contents to cells of the body before becoming chylomicron remnants and being taken up by the liver.
In medicine, the term “total cholesterol” refers to the sum of all the cholesterol molecules in the blood and is usually measured directly in laboratory tests. In order to know how much of this cholesterol resides in the different lipoproteins, these must be measured individually. Most current lipid testing measures HDL, LDL, VLDL, and triglycerides directly, but older assays measure only some of these and must calculate LDL, which you may see written as LDL-C. For this reason, many previous research studies have looked at total cholesterol levels rather than LDL. Historically, elevated levels of total cholesterol have been assumed to correlate with elevated levels of LDL, and unless triglycerides are extremely elevated, this is generally a reasonable assumption.
The Vital Role of LDL in Our Body
Most of the cells of our body can make a bit of cholesterol from scratch, but they also rely heavily on the delivered supply of this molecule to build membranes and hormones. In addition to its vital role transporting building blocks and nutrients, LDL also serves important roles within the immune system. Yes, you read that correctly, LDL plays a valuable part in our response to assault by infectious invaders, as do many of the lipoproteins, including HDL. When gram-negative bacteria seek to invade our body, they release a cell wall component known as endotoxin, which is quite inflammatory and can strongly trigger the immune system. But don’t worry, friendly neighborhood LDL is around to bind-up this toxin and prevent things from getting out of hand.
Is there evidence that higher levels of LDL could be protective against infection in us? You bet there is! There are many studies that show elevated levels of LDL are not a risk factor for increased all-cause mortality or cardiovascular mortality in the elderly.9 Furthermore, there are many studies suggesting that higher levels of LDL are protective as we age, which is most likely connected with its role in immune function.1,2,3-11
In a sample of 347 individuals over the age of sixty-five, those with low total cholesterol had a significantly higher risk of dying by non-vascular causes, while those with elevated total cholesterol had half the risk of the reference population.1 Another study of 105 individuals over the age of eighty living in Iceland found that those with the highest total cholesterol level had less than half the all-cause mortality of those with lower levels.12 An even larger investigation called the Leiden 85-plus study had even more striking results. This study included 724 elderly individuals living in the Netherlands in whom the correlation between total cholesterol and all-cause mortality was measured for ten years. The authors found that for every 38 milligrams per deciliter increase in the total cholesterol, there was a corresponding 15 percent decrease in the risk of dying over this time period.
Clearly, LDL is a valuable particle in our blood and serves many indispensable roles. How can LDL be both protective and harmful? This doesn’t seem to make any sense! The answer is that LDL itself is not harmful, but in certain situations, it can be involved in the process of responding to injury and inflammation—making it look like it’s a bad actor when it’s merely present at the scene of the crime.
So… What Causes Atherosclerosis?
There are more than a quintillion particles of LDL floating around in our bloodstream. If every LDL particle that entered the subendothelial space in our arteries led to the formation of a plaque, we’d be deader than a doornail long before our first birthday. Every second of every day, lipoproteins like LDL are moving in and out of the walls of both veins and arteries, delivering nutrients to the cells there for energy and the construction of membranes. Clearly, there must be another part of this equation that leads to retention of some of these LDL particles within the arterial wall.
Interestingly, HDL particles are smaller and ten times more numerous than LDL. They carry more cholesterol in our blood stream, but these particles do not participate in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Why not? Because they do not get stuck in the subendothelial space.
Within the arterial wall, it appears that only particles containing the APOB molecule are able to bind to the proteoglycans within the intima and be retained.13 It’s not the size of the particle, or the number of particles moving into the vessel wall that’s important, it’s how likely a lipoprotein is to be retained that determines whether or not it contributes to the process of plaque formation.
What determines how sticky the LDL particle and the intimal space are? Ah, my friends, this is truly the million-dollar question! There’s very good evidence that during the states of insulin resistance and inflammation, both the LDL particle and the intimal space get coated in “molecular velcro” and become more sticky.14,15,16-18
Specifically, studies looking at the arteries of diabetics and arterial wall injury have shown changes in the proteoglycan matrix that increase its affinity for LDL.19 Additional research reveals that the LDL particle becomes more likely to be bound to proteoglycans in the intimal space when it is enriched with apolipoprotein ApoC III—a process that occurs during states of insulin resistance—making for a dangerous combination that strongly predisposes to plaque formation. The risk of atherosclerosis is so high in diabetics that rates of heart attack are elevated in this population even with low levels of LDL.20
At this point, you may be saying, “Sure, I believe you on this, but doesn’t atherosclerosis occur in people without diabetes or pre-diabetes? How common is this scenario of insulin resistance?” Though diabetes and pre-diabetes are diagnosed in 35 percent of the American population, there’s strong evidence that insulin resistance is much more common than this! There is evidence that a whopping 88 percent of the American population has some degree of metabolic dysfunction.21 If the vast majority of people around us have insulin resistance, is it any wonder that some studies have shown a correlation between LDL levels and cardiovascular disease? Almost the entire population of the U.S. has velcro on their lipoproteins and within their arteries, and the tennis balls are getting stuck to the wall!
So to answer the previous question, there’s good evidence that when atherosclerosis does occur, it is almost always in the setting of insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction.
One of the biggest mistakes Western medicine makes is to extrapolate these pathologies to the 12 percent of us who are not insulin resistant and not inflamed, warning us that certain cardiovascular disease will swiftly follow with an elevated LDL.
Those of us with good insulin sensitivity are essentially a different breed, and there are many striking stories of plaque regression among insulin-sensitive individuals with “elevated LDL” eating carnivore or ketogenic diets. In the absence of insulin resistance and inflammation, higher levels of LDL are probably protective because of their roles with the immune response. Want to live a long time? Eat in a manner that allows for insulin sensitivity, decreases inflammation, and leads to a robust amount of valuable LDL particles. Carnivore diet, anyone?

Thoughts at the close of business
I think I'm clever sometimes. I let my imagination convince me that I have an insight to share. But it is so rare that someone asks for advice that sometimes you find other options, or craft them. I did just this thing at a question and answer session with the 4 contestants for this weekend's Minnesota Leather Pride.
But first some history.  In 4th grade we wrote letters to our heros. Most kids were normal and choose Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky.  But I never liked sports and even then thought myself clever. I picked President Gorbachev of the Soviet Union, it was the early days of the 1988 campaign and I watched the news.  I had sympathies for the enemy in the cold war, a prepubescent edge lord in a time before online. I internalized some counter revolutionary ideas and spent my high school years caught in the thrawl of Newt Gingrich and his insurgent Republicans before going to college, coming out and returning to my radical roots.  I was, am and will probably always be a Communist.
The intricacies of my ever evolving and unorthodox approach to Marxism aren't important, per se.  It is just to give context to this story. One day, when I was Minnesota Leather boy, in 2017, I set my Facebook profile picture to a picture of myself wearing my sash and, in what was the fashion of the day, an added frame that showed the world my feelings on some topic or issue.  But instead of a ribbon for AIDS awareness or breast cancer awareness or autism awareness it was a firetruck red hammer and sickle. It didn't take long for someone in the leather community to let me know they didn't appreciate me being visibly Communist and visibly a titleholder in our community.
I did it to be a bit provocative, I won't deny that. I thought it could bring attention to two things I cared about, a few people might be upset but I was entitled.  But when someone did call me on it I wasn't defiant, I apologized and took the picture down. Inside I felt aggrieved, but when it went from a theoretical offended "someone" to an actually offended someone, I recognized that it was a wrong move and I changed course.  I recognized that it was a cheap shot to leverage this platform I had won to, in my own small way, represent and advocate for this community to then promote a message that most everyone saw as unrelated. I wasn't being asked to change my message or censor any opinion I held, I was simply asked by one person to not grab the microphone out of Taylor Swift's hand and yell "Communism!" And I realized I was simply being asked to be polite and recognize people might find it irksome. Furthermore, the picture wasn't advancing an argument or pleading my case, it was being a disruption.
In my perception, I expressed an unpopular opinion and it turned the community against me.  I was henceforth a suspect character who was tolerated by never truly embrace. Honestly that whole drama was probably in my mind. For all I know one person just happened to offhandedly mention it to fill a lull in conversation and no one else noticed and even this person didn't care with any gusto.  But it affected me and it changed my mind about what is beneficial, what is sharing my deepest beliefs and what is just putting rational discourse aside and making a statement; I realized I didn't want to provoke because then people stop listening.
But it stuck with me because it made me think a lot about how much of myself I'm willing to compromise to be part of a community.  I considered explicitly how much of my involvement with kink I was willing to hide from vanilla friends and family and how much was crucial that they know if they were to know and accept the genuine and full me.  A whole reevaluation of my relationship to any group whose label I, through choice or circumstance, was a constituent of. And I figured out my own boundaries of what I'm willing to compromise for social acceptance.
With all of that in my mind, I asked the four contestants, as of writing this titleholders, what they would do if they found themselves facing criticism for expressing an unpopular or controversial belief with the community.  I thought I was so clever and giving them a heads up to consider beforehand a situation that had led me to a lot of energy intensive soul searching and contemplation.
Almost as soon as I had asked it I overcame my delusion and admitted to myself that I, like so many question askers before me, asked a question because I wanted to be heard and not truly to spark new thoughts in those answering or the audience.  But what's done is done. And the answers I heard got me thinking all over again.
As I listened to their answers I was struck by a nearly universal assumption on their part; they all seemed to take for granted that if they expressed an unpopular opinion it was likely they were wrong.  That idea made sense. Both chronically and acutely the leather community has faced divisions around the place and position of transgender people. In our local community a consensus emerged early and strongly that trans men are men, trans women are women, non-binary people exist and all were welcome to compete for titles that match their self identity.  This put us at odds with a vocal and entrenched faction of the larger community that disagreed. Their policies and escalating rhetoric tried to discourage the change we were advancing. In that context it made sense that our community knew better than those other people in other places. And if I disagree with this community I must be the one who is wrong, who should listen and learn and be open to change.  If I disagree it means I might agree with the people I generally disagree with and that doesn't seem right.
This wasn't the answer the clever me wanted to hear.  I wanted to hear a full throated defense of freedom of conscience and speech.  I harbored hope that someone would say they would stick to their guns and challenge the community to accept them as they were, disagreements and all.  I wanted them to say that they had core convictions that they couldn't silence or hide come hell and high water! If anyone ever did begrudge me talking politics then my insightful question would make them reconsider.  Now, as far as I know, none of that happened. No one took particular notice of my question. If they did, they probably wouldn't relate it to the incident that was only significant to me and nearly two years out of date.  But since then I've been thinking again.
Throughout the rest of the day and night, through the contest I was judging and my drive home afterwards I have been turning all this around in my mind.  Arguing with myself, looking for new connections or insights.
Here's where I've ended up. This isn't an answer or even something I'm ready to say I believe. From the start of the next paragraph to the end of this sort of essay, please remember this is a maybe, a perhaps.  It's an answer that seeks to spark more questions, in me and maybe in whatever audience it finds. But, again, I recognize the vanity of thinking I have the power to influence anyone.
Maybe both answers are crucial. Maybe being truly part of a community can be defined by this question, this construction.
You are part of a community when you share something precious in common, be it kinship or love, philosophy or real estate.  Communities coalesce around these shared ideas. If you find yourself in disagreement with your community, the responsible path begins with questioning yourself.  Why do you disagree? Have you made mistakes in logic or let your mind be clouded by biases or blind spots that could have inadvertently brought you to hold an idea that is truly incongruent with the concepts you hold dear and have bound you to this community?  Only you can answer this question, but if your honest self inquiry reassures you that you are right in the face of disagreement from those you see as your own, it is the best course to hold true to your ideals and trust that your bond to your community will allow them to accept you disagreements and all.  Or, if the rupture is insurmountable, you must trust that there is a place for your in another community where you will be accepted for your genuine and honest self.
There is a comfort in conformity and acceptance. There is a power and strength in defiance.  We each live life charting our own evolving course between these two shores, sometimes sacrificing one to secure the other, always balancing what we desire with what we're willing to risk losing to secure it.
And if, through timidity or complacency, we ever default to blindly following popular opinion or stubbornly insisting knee jerk on our own correctness, we not only fail to grow into the person we are always desirous of becoming, we do harm to our community by not trusting others to see beyond our differences.  Further, we deprive those we claim solidarity with the opportunity to know the true self we are as well as the chance to examine their own ideas and either join our dissent or find their existing agreement reinvigorated and stronger for the reminder of the shared beliefs.
Our communities construct us as much as we construct our communities and it is on each of us to continue that inner dialogue and remain vigilant.  Sometimes we'll fit in and sometimes we'll stand out, if we are where we are loved and we love then we are in community worthy of us and us of them.
Disagreement and agreement, fluidity and solidity, deference and defiance all have a place in living communities and living communities survive into the future.

How Company Allies Assist the LGBTQ Group After the Get together Ends
http://tinyurl.com/yycfvdtk Throughout the month of June, many manufacturers flip their logos into LGBTQ-friendly rainbows, triggering the annual debate: has Delight Month turn out to be too company? For a month devoted to multi-colored acceptance, there’s fairly a little bit of grey space. It’s been 50 years since a police raid at The Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village spurred what grew to become the homosexual liberation motion. In the present day, the pink bricks of the landmark constructing are adorned with bundles of rainbow flags and stretched above the window is a JetBlue sponsored banner that reads: “Love wings.” On June 30, the world’s greatest delight celebration featured 72 company sponsors in New York Metropolis—together with long-time supporters like TD Financial institution and newer sponsors like Airbnb—in addition to 38 group and nonprofit companions, based on organizers of World Delight NYC. As extra firms take part on the celebration of LGBTQ id, some argue that the now ubiquitous rainbows are indicators of progress, whereas others fear that they’re simply advertising and marketing ploy. However consultants say that genuine advocacy, significantly in locations the place it’s harmful to be LGBTQ, is a part of what could make firms such priceless allies. And now that Delight Month is over, the actual work begins. Utilizing Knowledge for Equality Todd Sears, founder and CEO of Out Management, an advocacy group that connects companies with the LGBTQ group, advises senior leaders at firms like Citigroup and Coca-Cola to assist their LGBTQ prospects through the use of knowledge. He connects inclusion to their backside line—a phrase Out Management trademarked as “Return on Equality.” Moreover, Sears pointed to a current report by Out Management referred to as the LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, which analyzed all 50 states and the way they measure up on various matters equivalent to authorized safety, political attitudes, healthcare entry and household assist.  Once you zoom in from this huge image view of cultural attitudes, supporting the LGBTQ group can imply various things inside firms—they’re cultures in themselves. Within the day-to-day operations of an organization, understanding why inclusion issues is important, says Claudia Brind-Woody, vp and managing director for world mental property licensing at IBM. “Inclusivity means not ‘simply we’re allowed to be there,’ however we’re valued,” Brind-Woody mentioned. “I’ve all the time mentioned: sensible groups will do superb issues, however actually various groups will do unimaginable issues.” As an LGBTQ-identifying one that has labored at IBM for greater than 22 years, she proudly factors to IBM’s LGBTQ-friendly sources, like a comprehensive guide to assist transgender individuals transition within the office. Each Sears and Brind-Woody agreed that forward-thinking firms additionally test in to see how they’re doing past Delight Month. IBM usually surveys staff as a part of an inside inclusivity index, asking them questions like: “Do I really feel comfy bringing my entire self to work?” This index builds upon an already current Corporate Equality Index by the Human Rights Marketing campaign (HRC), a non-profit group that created an index to price the equality for lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals within the office at Fortune 500 firms and high legislation companies. The 2019 Corporate Equality Index marked a record-breaking variety of 609 companies that scored 100%. And but, that very same HRC report additionally revealed that 46% of LGBTQ surveyed staff within the U.S. are closeted. Talking Up Whereas it’s tempting for companies to quantify change in surveys and worker knowledge alone—it’s not sufficient. On Tuesday, 206 main firms—from Google and Amazon to Bank of America and Nikesigned a landmark Amicus brief that can go to the U.S. Supreme Courtroom to ensure protections for his or her LGBTQ employees towards discrimination. It’s anticipated for firms these days to talk up on points, says Sears. As somebody who spent years engaged on Wall Avenue and advocating for LGBTQ individuals, Sears believes “strongly that firms ought to have a spot in delight.” Sears says that whereas there could also be some firms who “pinkwash” their logos with out advocating for LGBTQ individuals, he spotlighted the workers inside firms who catalyze change and volunteer—which isn’t their day job however their “homosexual job.” There isn’t any denying CEO’s have a strong voice and it’s as much as them to “flex their company muscle groups and enact insurance policies,” says Wall Avenue alum Lanaya Irvin.  As Chair of the Human Rights Marketing campaign’s Enterprise Advisory Council, Irvin echoed this level by saying that in the case of enacting change, “firms typically get there earlier than governments do.”  Across the globe, there are no less than 68 international locations the place same-sex relations are outlawed and no less than 9 international locations the place gender expression is criminalized, based on Human Rights Watch.  Even when an organization doesn’t outwardly impact political change, Irvin spoke to the highly effective presence a company tradition can have on its worldwide staff.   “There are cases the place world firms are restricted to adjust to native legislation,” Irvin defined. “On the similar time, you will note these firms upholding LGBTQ inclusive office insurance policies throughout the globe, they usually turn out to be considerably of an embassy.” On the bottom degree, an government’s selection to talk up or keep silent, assist initiatives or strategically donate cash to sure teams finally trickles right down to the expertise of their staff. These leaders all spoke to the ability of feeling free and welcome at work and the way that impacts your on a regular basis life, which is one thing Kimiko Murota has skilled either side of throughout her first job with Hole Inc. “Retail is usually a primary job for younger individuals, and I feel leaders have a duty to guide by instance and foster an inclusive tradition,” Murota instructed Fortune in an e-mail. “I began at Previous Navy as a gross sales affiliate in 2002, which was across the similar time I began relationship my first girlfriend. A couple of months into my first job, a coworker referred to as me a “dyke” whereas we have been within the break room.” The management staff didn’t simply reply to the incident—they made Murota really feel like she belonged. This assist, Murota mentioned, made her need to have a future on the firm and it impressed her to develop herself as a pacesetter. “It was stunning and I felt confused,” Murota mentioned. “I used to be younger and new at my job, so I didn’t know find out how to react or if I ought to stick up for myself. To today, I don’t know why this coworker made that slur however I do bear in mind how the shop management staff responded.”  Seventeen years later, she remains to be with Hole Inc.—which was the primary attire firm to signal onto the UN Standards of Conduct for Business in 2017—and helps different staff as a pacesetter on the Change Administration staff. Murota spoke to the constructive affect of an inclusive office and even shared that she met her fiancée Brooke whereas working at Previous Navy. Past the Rainbow As for the rainbow logos, there may be greater than meets the attention in the case of firms supporting their LGBTQ staff.  In response to Brind-Woody, who lives in England along with her spouse Tracie, the truth that huge firms like IBM flip their brand rainbow in June doesn’t imply their inclusive insurance policies go away on the finish of the month. “The month of delight simply amplifies the visibility—and for this group, visibility is a factor,” Brind-Woody emphasised. “As a result of we are able to conceal—we’ve even been taught to cover. And after we are seen, we allow youthful individuals to look and see that they will succeed in the event that they’re good at what they do.” Sears mentioned that for forward-thinking firms, the work is simply starting. “Delight is a second in time to test progress,” he mentioned. “If firms take that strategy, then Delight is a kickoff to what they’re going to proceed to do between now and subsequent yr. It’s nearly like a brand new yr’s eve of LGBTQ equality. What are your resolutions for the following 12 months till Delight?” Whereas the confetti from the parades will get swept, not all company assist for the LGBTQ group will disappear.  Actually, that JetBlue sponsored banner on the Stonewall Inn has been there all yr, says co-owner of the Inn Stacy Lentz.  Lentz, who can be the CEO of the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, mentioned the Fortune 500 airline has lengthy supported the landmark’s non-profit by donating tickets to fly in LGBTQ activists and propping up grassroots advocacy teams across the nation. By means of this selective, company partnership Lentz mentioned they’ve been capable of strategically combat for equality.  In a reverse use of promoting throughout Delight, she mentioned they’re utilizing the “Stonewall” identify to unfold equality to communities the place it’s nonetheless unlawful to be LGBTQ. “We’re engaged on the bottom the place equality has been sluggish to reach,” she mentioned. “There are locations the place the social stigma nonetheless exists and it’s onerous to be LGBTQ each day.” Since Stonewall is globally acknowledged, Lentz mentioned she intends to make use of it to energy change—not simply throughout Delight Month. Embracing plastic and the apocalypse: An interview with Morehshin Allahyari and Daniel Rourke
Quick post to say that:
1. If you’re in London this coming weekend, don’t miss the Digital Design Weekend 2017. It’s the 7th edition and this year’s a particularly good one with plenty of critical, intelligent and edgy works and ideas. Think Garnet Hertz‘s Disobedient Electronics: Protest, Tactical Tech, Nina Sellars, etc.
2. Artist Morehshin Allahyari and writer/artistDaniel Rourke are also part of the programme with The 3D Additivist Manifesto and The 3D Additivist Cookbook. And i’ve been asked by the lovely and sharp Irini Papadimitriou to interview them for the catalogue of the Digital Design Weekend. What they’ve done for the reflection around 3D fabrication, speculative design, and more generally digital culture is invaluable. The texts of the catalogue are online but i’m copy/pasting my intro (i’m always surprised at how flowery my prose gets when i’m asked to write ‘outside’ of my blog) and our interview below because it has images and you know i love images:
#Additivism: An interview with Morehshin Allahyari and Daniel Rourke
For its evangelists, 3D printing is going to breezily save the world one 3D printed kidney, wind turbine, honeycomb or insect snack at a time. The costs of domestic 3D printers are dwindling, the products custom-manufactured to meet our precise needs and the technology has been hailed as the most liberating and revolutionary since the steam engine.
Like with many innovations, this cheerful outlook has soon been met with warnings of copyright hurdles, high energy uses, harmful air emissions, and the realisation that the technology relies on the toxic extraction and processing of minerals and crude oil.
#additivism is the bastard of these two visions. It conjures nightmares of toxic machines churning out guns, drugs, counterfeit cash and meaningless trash ad libitum. It also take its cue from additive manufacturing technology itself and suggests that small scale, cumulative actions have the potential to bring about bigger, more complex realities.
In 2015, Morehshin Allahyari and Daniel Rourke released The 3D Additivist Manifesto and called for objects and strategies that would push the physical and conceptual boundaries of 3D printing to its most radical, dystopian and disobedient limits. Artists, designers, activists and thinkers responded with speculative or practical projects, each of them a kind of recipe for transgression and critical meditation on 3D printing and the emancipatory promises of technology. They are presented in The 3D Additivist Cookbook. Made available in 3DPDF format, it is free to download, share, remix and subvert (at additivism.org).
With it, 3D printing finally gets the counterculture movement it deserved.

Régine Debatty: Hi Morehshin and Daniel! I like that you chose to follow the idea of ‘staying with the trouble’ and that we probably need to accept that the world is already beyond fixing. This is quite at odds with the tendency of design to imagine nicely-packaged solutions to all sorts of small and vast problems. Have you found that the idea of embracing the horror is still as radical as it was when you embarked on the project?
Morehshin Allahyari and Daniel Rourke: This notion of ‘solving’ a problem, especially in a world that feels increasingly non-fixable, is something that we have discussed and taught in many of our talks and workshops. In the world of #Additivism and our own practices as individuals, we’ve been big advocates of micro actions as ways to make something with wider reach and more critical potential. To build platforms and communities and frameworks for educating through rethinking and refiguring. And in contradiction to many of the principles of design, we are not interested or obsessed with answers and solutions. We want to expose things. Make invisible things visible. Mess things up, or at least offer mess and humour and darkness and speculation as ways to reconsider the complicated status of topics like equality, global ecology, or reproductive rights that need to be constantly re-assessed.
#Additivism is about poking at things with weird sticks and asking ever difficult, and often unpalatable questions. To take the very powers that oppress you and using their strategies and languages and aesthetics against them. Embrace the apocalypse but use its darkness to create light. That’s how we’ve been staying with the trouble.
A solution is always a solution ‘for’ some particular, universalised group. And so ‘radicality’ is a constantly shifting notion, dependent on the struggles and conflicts that impact the lives of unheard and unrecognised subjects. Over the life of our project the rise of negative political campaigns, such as Brexit and Donald Trump, signal how appeals to universals are still a powerful force. We oppose the grand narrative, and rather hope for an explosion of counter and micro narratives, for a recognition of singularities – plural – a project that by necessity must go on and on endlessly.

Golan Levin and Shawn Sims, The Free Universal Construction Kit. A #toolkit from The 3D Additivist Cookbook
R: Judging from the content of The 3D Additivist Cookbook, it seems that #Additivism has found echoes beyond plastic and 3D printing. Could you tell us how the dystopian and utopian dimensions of 3D printing can be applied to other disciplines, media, practices and technologies?
M&D: For us the 3D printer has always been a metaphor and point of departure to delve into and overlap others disciplines and worlds. The more we developed the project, and especially when it was the time to make selections for the Cookbook, we used #Additivism as a network of forces. Economic, social, political, material, infrastructural. The 3D printer is a machine that offers the promise of being able – one day – to make copies of itself. A radical metaphor for the capacity of life breathed into the world of inert matter. In an era of increasing interest in robots, AI, and other non human technological agents, the 3D printer is still a vibrant metaphor for the capacity of our technologies to inhabit and parasitise new spaces and realities. Who the particular subjects are who seek out and inhabit these new spaces is our concern, and this is another point at which the 3D printer becomes more than a neutral technology. #Additivism sought to wrestle control of 3D printer narratives away from the white tech males who dominate the field. So we still believe that #Additivism is a call for those on the ‘outside’ to seize control and multiply the possible spaces and worlds they inhabit from fablabs, maker-spaces, bedrooms, and laptop screens.
An Additivist is someone who is interested in the potential of technology to leverage small, incremental actions to potentially planetary significance. No 3D printer is required.
For a large central section of The 3D Additivist Cookbook we commissioned two artist groups – A Parede and Browntourage – to curate a series of ‘Additivist’ works. The works from artists of Middle Eastern, South American and other non-western heritages spiral around queer, feminist and decolonialist narratives. We are really proud of that section of The Cookbook in particular, because it often calls our entire project into question. Challenging dominant narratives is crucial to maintaining plurality. The 3D Additivist Manifesto asked to be contradicted and re-envisioned. Every work in the resulting Cookbook is therefore a seed for generating worlds and actions that even – and perhaps especially – its original designers did not envisage.
Jasper Meiners and Isabel Paehr, The Webcamera Obscura. A #toolkit from The 3D Additivist Cookbook
R: Few things make me happier than seeing provocative design or art ideas spread outside of the usual creative circles of galleries and festivals. How can someone who’s neither an artist nor a designer engage with the #Additivist ideas and introduce small, concrete forms of radicality into their life?
M &D: That’s awesome to hear! We share that happiness with you. So much of what we wanted to build was accessibility, education and activation (daily small actions). We urge people to do the same, and hope #Additivism inspires them. How can your particular skill or knowledge be translated into frameworks for educating and including others? What story or counter narrative do you have to bring to the world? The Cookbook’s most radical feature – we hope – is its accessibility and openness (download it for free now and see). But we are far more excited about the projects that are not contained in it, that still have to be imagined. That’s a daily radical proposition. What worlds have yet to be envisioned? We can only answer that together. Jump in.
A lot of action-based projects in the Cookbook can be realised by anyone with any kind of background, as long as they can download the objects from our website and take it to a fablab for a cheap 3D print. For example, a project by Isabel Paehr and Jasper Meiners called ‘Webcam Obscura’ which is a simple playful anti-surveillance tool for laptops. In addition, a good portion of the Cookbook includes essays, interviews, and stories (mostly science fiction) brought together to encourage Additivist way of thinking. Out of the many many workshops we have delivered we’ve only ever used a 3D printer once. Many projects in the Cookbook do their critical work without ever needing to be 3D printed. Kyle McDonald’s Liberator Variations, for instance, questions the status of the now infamous 3D printable ‘Liberator’ gun, but is also a playful tutorial and poetic homage to 3D rendering software. Many of the most ‘radical’ Additivist Cookbook projects are also the simplest. We hope the Cookbook encourages people to play, experiment and not be afraid to make mistakes. That’s the best way to learn, and it’s fundamental to the practices of art and design. We all start as amateurs. Some of us try really hard to stay that way.
R: Because the place of women in the tech world is still one we have to fight for, do you think that there is a place for feminism in #Additivism?
M&D: Yes of course or we wouldn’t do it at all. It’s actually quite interesting to walk into Fablabs anywhere in the world and see so many women standing next to machines 3D printing or laser cutting objects. It’s something we’ve been counting and paying attention to. But in addition to quantity and numbers, so much of #Additivism is about ‘the female future’ we want to participate in building. The feminism we are interested in is a philosophy of more than women, it is a philosophy of non male, non cis, non white. All those people who have at one stage or another been considered less than human by the social systems that oppress them.
Zach Rispoli, Snowden Crown Jewels. A #device from The 3D Additivist Cookbook
R: #Additivism brings to light an apocalyptic vision of the world. Yet, there is a fair amount of irony and humour in The 3D Additivist Cookbook. How do you reconcile horror with humour?
M&D: Between the two of us we have often talked about (jokingly and for real) being Positive Nihilists. So much of that is about our personalities and how we also perhaps handle the dark world we live in…lol. Do we really have to reconcile humour? If humour is a radical act in itself then it need not be considered as somehow the opposite of dystopia/darkness/apocalyptic visions.
Laughter is a shared bodily sound that carries across a group to show that the threat has passed. One human thinks they see a snake in the grass and call out an alarm, but then they quickly realise it is just a stick, and begin to laugh, and their companions laugh at their mistake. Humour today might play a similar role in light of the global problems we face. #Additivism is full of distractions and counter propositions, pointing to a perceived threat, but showing that the real concern lies elsewhere, at a different scale. Humour is significant in that act. Shared mind shifting. Reflective counter-actions and realities. Embracing the horror together.

If an individual has an expertise that’s bodily, mentally or emotionally traumatic, the thoughts offers with the state of affairs in certainly one of a number of alternative ways. Some folks abuse alcohol, meals, medicine or different substances to numb the sentiments they’ve inside. Others mourn for a brief time period, restore their religion, steadiness and sanity, and in some way miraculously transfer on. However the remainder of us left over, often those that are very analytical and logical, have bother processing deeply troubling conditions. So, we replay the painful state of affairs over and over in our minds, trying to find a solution. However the issue is, the reply can’t be discovered within the rational thoughts, as a result of the issue is on an emotional plain. Subsequently, the answer has to return from the center, which must be healed and restored. Right here is the step-by-step course of I’ve tailored to finish obsessive fascinated with an Ex: Step 1: Do not take something your Ex ever mentioned or did personally, as a result of nothing your Ex ever mentioned or did was about you. Even when your Ex downright blames you for every part that went incorrect in your relationship, understand their assertion is just coming from who they’re, which has completely nothing to do with the particular person you’re. Step 2: Nonetheless, not taking your Ex personally is a two sided coin. If in the course of the warmth of an argument you react and inform your Ex what an fool THEY are, and the way every part is THEIR fault, then it has nothing to do with them. Your statements solely replicate the form of particular person you’re, which is an individual who likes in charge and decide. This has nothing to do together with your Ex. Subsequently, consciously make an effort to be the particular person you’re, no matter how your Ex is behaving. Make an inventory of all of the qualities you admire in others, for instance: kindness, confidence, compassion, and respect. Likelihood is you already possess the qualities inside your self. Be very cautious to not make statements that do not replicate who you’re, even when you might be tempted to present into the harm and anger you are feeling. Step three Launch your judgments and opinions by changing into associates with Loss of life. As morbid as this sounds, understand that in 100 years, you and your Ex will seemingly be lifeless, and nothing you ever fought about will likely be remembered. In case your Ex has the obsessive have to be proper and argue with you about every part, give in to their whim and say, “You might be completely proper.” Not solely will this reinforce your relationship with Loss of life and prevent an incredible quantity of non-public energy, your Ex will discover it inconceivable to argue with you since you are giving the non-verbal message that it actually would not matter. As one my favourite authors Wayne Dyer as soon as mentioned, “Have you ever ever observed how exhausting it’s to argue with somebody who is not obsessive about being proper?” Step four: If the harm and anger is overwhelming, distance your self out of your Ex fully. And it doesn’t matter what, get in your knees and pray in your Ex each morning. Pray that your Ex will likely be granted all the well being, wealth and happiness you would like for your self. Even in case you are not a spiritual particular person, or you do not consider in God, the act itself is liberating. In twelve step packages, corresponding to Alcoholics Nameless, they’re taught to hope for folks they’ve a deep resentment in direction of. At first, you’ll not imply a phrase of the prayer. However when you say the prayer persistently for 2 weeks, you’ll come to genuinely imply it, and discover that there’s a a part of you that realizes your Ex is only a human being, with their very own imperfections, weaknesses and brief comings. In case you go deeper, you’ll understand your Ex might also be a really harm and scared particular person – even when they outwardly appear very hostile, aggressive and manipulative. In fact, it doesn’t matter what occurred to your Ex of their childhood and even of their day after day life – it doesn’t give them a cause to mistreat you. However by being conscious of the truth that your Ex has a sure set of points to cope with on their very own time, it’ll aid you change the harm and anger you are feeling with compassion and understanding. Step 5: Personal your private energy. As a result of when you’re who you’re, whatever the state of affairs or circumstance that comes your means, then this transforms you into a really highly effective particular person. That is the step that completely baffles your Ex, as a result of by you being who you’re, and never letting them get you down – it sends your Ex the non-verbal message that you’re who you’re and they’re who they’re. However most significantly, it tells your Ex that you’re not going to take any of their crap! If you reply to your Ex’s hostility with kindness, and your Ex’s blame with compassion, it frustrates them to no finish, as a result of your Ex can not get you to play their sport. Step 6: Come to grasp that you’re doing all of this work for no different cause than to appreciate who you’re, restore your sense of steadiness, and reclaim your private energy. In case you do all of this work in an effort to manipulate your Ex, and make them need you again, your Ex will subconsciously sense your intentions, as a result of at one level or one other, you’ll slip and let your intentions be recognized with out realizing it. When this occurs, you’ll give your whole energy again to your Ex, and must begin once more with Step 1. Step 6 is usually tough, as a result of when you grasp every step up thus far, your Ex might very effectively wish to reconcile. On the very least, your Ex will start responding to the kindness you ship their means in a constructive trend. However regardless if you wish to get again collectively together with your Ex, simply be associates, or simply recover from the obsessive considering – keep in mind your sole objective is to appreciate who you’re, restore your sense of steadiness, and reclaim your private energy. In case you do all of this work simply to govern your Ex into responding the best way you need them to, it could work for a really brief time period. However I assure your Ex will choose up on the truth that your intentions will not be real, and you’ll lose your private energy. Not solely that, however if you genuinely grow to be who you’re, you entice the proper of individuals to your life. And possibly your Ex is just not the particular person you are supposed to be with! And the one means you’ll know in case you are meant to be together with your Ex or anybody else is in case you are genuinely who you’re. Step 7: Forgive your Ex, it doesn’t matter what they did or did not do. Sadly, it will not be sufficient at this level to say, “I forgive my ex.” And go away it at that. Forgiveness has little to do with phrases, and extra to do with motion. Earlier than continuing with this step, I like to recommend studying up on the subject of forgiveness, and studying heroic tales in regards to the energy of forgiveness. I as soon as learn a narrative a few lady whose daughter was brutally raped and murdered by a person that was finally caught and despatched to jail. As anybody can think about, the girl spent years of her life in rage and obsession over what this man had performed to her daughter. I’m positive there aren’t any phrases to specific how a lot ache this lady was feeling. Nonetheless, she in some way came upon a guide entitled, The Course of Miracles and started studying about what the facility of forgiveness may do for her. She began to hope for the person, and finally despatched him a letter, letting him know she had forgiven him for the actions he took towards her daughter, although she did not condone his conduct. To make a protracted story brief, the person wrote the girl again and apologized profusely. The girl felt compelled to see this younger man in jail, and she or he held him as he cried throughout their first go to. To make a protracted story brief, they grew to become associates, and she or he grew to become his primary advocate in makes an attempt to launch him from jail. There will not be lots of people strolling on the planet as brave as this lady, however it’s an excessive instance of what’s attainable inside every certainly one of us. I thought of this lady earlier than I reached out to my Ex with forgiveness in my coronary heart. I despatched a present to my Ex and the girl my Ex left me for, which appeared to pale compared to this lady’s story. In fact, it took me slightly over a yr to achieve that time, and plenty of soul looking out. To this present day, I like my Ex with all of my coronary heart on a platonic degree. We reside in two completely completely different cities, however nonetheless name and ship one another emails now and again pretty much as good associates. I’m additionally in a wholesome relationship with somebody I’m deeply in love with. Subsequent week will likely be our two yr anniversary. I don’t assume I’d be as completely happy and as deeply in love with this new particular person as I’m now, had I not let go of the anger, bitterness, and resentment I as soon as felt in direction of my Ex, which is another excuse why forgiveness is so necessary. Lots of people consider turning off your emotions for an individual you as soon as have been in a romantic relationship with, and even hating them is a strategy to present that they’re “over” the particular person. However I consider the precise reverse is true. When you find yourself fully “over” an individual, you actually want them nothing however the perfect – and you’re completely indifferent emotionally from how they act or react. One other level to think about is the truth that love is not actual except you really liked your Ex for the particular person they’re, not the particular person you wished them to be. And simply because the romantic relationship did not work out, doesn’t suggest your Ex is not a lovable particular person.
