Villain leaned over Hero's shoulder. "What are you working on?"

Hero startled badly and looked around, eyes wide. "My god, don't scare me like that. Uh..." They blinked, realizing they didn't recognize the person's face.

Villain gave a disarming smile that would have had anyone else fooled. "You don't recognize my voice?" The villain leaned closer, fingers digging into Hero's shoulders and delighting in the way their enemy froze up at the touch. With a mild-mannered grin on their lips, they practically purred in their ear. "I've been wondering where you disappeared to, [Hero]."

"...[Villain]." The name was barely a whisper on the hero's tongue. Their eyes darted to check their surroundings.

The library was empty, save for the bookshelves that surrounded them in the little alcove Hero had dragged this desk into.

Villain took the seat across from them. "This is a study area, yes?" They glanced at the sign on the wall to their right as if they actually needed to check. When they looked back, they tapped Hero's notebook, smile still playing on their lips. "Study with me."

Hero stared at them, expression carefully neutral. They made to get up, chair scraping softly on the carpet, but they didn't even get to bend their knees before they found the barrel of a handgun pointed at their face. "Where are you going?" Villain asked. It sounded polite, like an innocent inquiry.

Slowly, Hero scooted forward until their legs were fully underneath the table. They didn't have a weapon to defend themself, and Villain was always a quicker draw than them, anyway. As they both settled back into their seats, Hero eyed the criminal warily. What did the villain want? What could their motive be for tracking them here?

"Show me how to do- what is this?" Villain picked up one of the stray sheets of paper scattered over the desk. If they weren't being held hostage, Hero might have smiled at the way their eyes narrowed at the list of equations.

"Physics," they provided reluctantly.

"Physics." For a brief moment Hero could have sworn they saw a frown, but the mask of feigned interest was back up the next time they blinked. "This looks like math to me."

Hero actually snorted and rolled their eyes - for show, of course. If they were stuck here studying with an extra annoyance, they might as well try to relax a bit. "Yeah, that's bascially what physics is."

"Hm." The criminal discarded the reference sheet for one of the example problems. "I didn't take you for a scholar."

"Degree's not gonna get itself," Hero shrugged. They picked up their pencil, movements clearly telegraphed. The gun was put away, but they didn't want to risk getting blood on their hard work.

For a few minutes, the villain simply watched them quietly, and Hero gladly welcomed the return of silence. They had to restart the problem they were on because of the interruption, but soon they were wrapped up in their work once more. They only looked up when they got too frustrated and decided to move on the next question instead. As they reached for a fresh sheet of paper, they saw the villain examining their notes, brow furrowed as if they were trying to parse out a secret code hidden in the numbers.

Hero twirled their pencil and wondered if it was worth asking for that back. Maybe if they offered a quick explanation of the topic the villain would leave them alone. They had several questions on the tip of their tongue, but the one that came out wasn't one of them.

"How'd you even know where to find me?"

The villain grinned. It was a fiendish thing, the way the corners of their mouth stretched wide to show the whites of their teeth. "That's my little secret."

Knowing better than to pry, lest the criminal talk them in circles, Hero decided to propose an offer. "I'll teach you how to solve free fall problems," they said. "That's what you want, right? I'll show you how to do those. But only if you tell me how you found me." It wasn't a bad deal - information for information. Villain was always a fan of fair trades if they deemed the benefits to them worthy enough.

The criminal glanced between Hero and the scattered worksheets before giving a nod of agreement.

The next time Hero looked up from the table's surface, they noticed with a small start that the overhead lights were on and that the sun had long set outside the windows. How much time had passed while they were studying?

"I got it!" Their attention was suddenly drawn back to the villain. They had a satisfied expression that Hero had never seen quite so clearly before. It was only now that they realized they weren't the only one who's identity was exposed. Their enemy had come maskeless.

"Here." The sheet of paper with the work they'd spent the last half hour on was suddenly shoved in their face. Hero let their eyes drift down to the circled number at the bottom of the page. "The question asked how long the ball was up in the air for," Villain reminded. "We found how long it took to reach the maximum height. We just forgot to-"

"-to double it," Hero finished. They dropped their head in their hands. They'd spent all that time redrawing the diagram and reworking the numbers when the solution was so simple.

Villain seemed to share the sentiment. They sat back in their chair, frustration giving way to exhaustion.

"We're stupid," Hero groaned.

"You're stupid," Villain corrected.

"This problem is stupid."

For once, they seemed to agree on something.
