Conservation groups filed objections this week to the U.S. Forest Serviceâs proposed final management plan for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests in western Colorado. The plan would allow commercial logging on more than 772,000 acres of public lands, including mature and old-growth trees â a 66% increase from the current forest plan.
âA sizeable area of our beloved forests could be sacrificed to commercial logging at the expense of our already dwindling wilderness areas, wildlife habitat and recreation,â said Chad Reich with High Country Conservation Advocates. âOutdoor recreation is a far larger economic driver for our communities than the local timber industry that benefits from cutting these forests. The Forest Service wouldâve known that if it had conducted an economic analysis, as required by law.â
Under the proposed plan mature and old-growth forests, which store massive amounts of carbon, could be commercially logged. Forest managers would not be required to identify and protect old-growth and mature trees. Steep slopes across the forests, including Upper Taylor Canyon and Slate River Valley, could also be logged despite the high risk of severe erosion and threats to water quality.
âThe proposed plan directly violates federal policy on protecting mature and old-growth trees as a cornerstone of U.S. climate action,â said Alison Gallensky, conservation geographer with Rocky Mountain Wild. âThe Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests boast the highest carbon sequestration capacity of any national forest in the Rocky Mountain region. Despite this the Forest Service has failed to ensure these vital carbon sinks arenât logged and sold.â
Objections also challenged the Forest Serviceâs failure to take urgently needed climate action by prohibiting new coal leasing in the plan.
...
The Forest Service recommended adding only 46,200 acres of new wilderness area in the final plan. The communityâs conservation proposal had called for more than 324,000 acres of new wilderness lands. In addition, the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative offered a broadly supported proposal for new wilderness and special management areas in Gunnison County that was mostly excluded.
...
âCommunity members proposed special management area designations to protect pristine forestlands in the North Fork Valley from logging and oil and gas drilling,â said Peter Hart, legal director at Wilderness Workshop. âThe Forest Service ignored those proposals and chose not to protect those areas in the new plan.â
The groups also raised concerns about the planâs failure to address the myriad needs of plants and animals that depend on the forests.
âOver 20 years ago Colorado Parks and Wildlife reintroduced Canada lynx to the San Juan Mountains,â said Rocky Smith, a long-time forest management analyst. âThis is a great source of pride for wildlife lovers in this state. Lynx are federally threatened and depend on mature forests with large trees. This plan allows for logging that could easily degrade or destroy much of the best habitat for lynx and their main prey, snowshoe hares, and undermine Coloradoâs hard work to reestablish and maintain a viable lynx population.â
The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests also provide habitat for the iconic bighorn sheep and lesser-known species like the Grand Junction milkvetch and the Tundra buttercup. These species, among others, need special designation the Forest Service grants to plants and animals when there is concern about their ability to survive in the area. Many struggling plants and animals were left off the list in the proposed final plan.
âWithout the species of conservation concern designation the Forest Service has no obligation to make sure the plants and animals continue to exist locally,â said Chris Krupp, public lands attorney with WildEarth Guardians. âIn many cases, the agency decided not to designate wildlife, plants or fish merely because it had no data on their population trends. Without species of conservation concern designation, the number of bighorn sheep in GMUG could dwindle down to almost nothing and the agency wouldnât have to do anything about it.â

I have the vibes, hobbies and spinal integrity of an 80 year old lady. I also have the face of a teenager and will be carded until I die. I ventured out in public today to the winter expo (tradeshow/bazzar) and these traits collided in the stupidest way.
Now imagine the following:
You are a dude working a booth advertising the Arctic Winter Games, basically the winter Olympics for teenagers with some more obscure and traditional sports mixed in. One of these is the snowshoe race which requires wood and sinew snowshoes and mukluks as gear, no metal or plastic snowshoes. The field is not deep, teens these days are not super into long walks in the frozen woods wearing baskets on their feet.
Suddenly you behold a young woman wandering around with a pair of traditional snowshoes complete with canvas ties. She's wearing a ski jacket in a sea of flannel and down. Clearly this is a minor, but she's independent enough to wander around in public with minimal supervision. The jacket says junior nationals on the back, a u16 winter racing circuit. She is literally the perfect target demographic.
So you say hi and get ready with your brochure and your stickers and she stops to chat and hmm, she may not be a teenager, might be a college kid. How do you tactfully ask her age without being wierd? The guy she's with is clearly older, he has a beard, maybe he's her older brother, hopefully.
Dear reader. I am pushing 30. My jacket is also almost 30. My husband is about to keel over and die from trying not to laugh. We both participated in the AWG a decade ago when we were actually teenagers. My bomb ass new snowshoes I just got from the guy selling antique rifles at the gunshow will be used with my traditional moosehide mukluks because I'm the kind of adult who owns and uses mukluks and wooden snowshoes.
So the poor dude at the booth, frantically backpedaling out of one of the dumbest faux pas i can think of, asks if I want to be a volunteer. Which actually sounds pretty fun and I might do it.

Well today feels like as good a day as any for me to mention some real history I learned after I watched The Terror. This has basically nothing to do with the show Iâll tell you rn -Iâll also mention some facts about the Franklins at the end. Letâs talk about Dr. John Rae and one of the first investigations into âWtf happened to the Franklin expedition.â
Background
John Rae was born on September 30, 1813 in Orkney were he was also raised -The Orkneys are a group of islands off Scotlands northern coast. He became a doctor and then got a job to what is not Ontario with the Hudson Bay Company. During that time he worked with First Nations people of the area and became adept with snowshoes and survival skills.
He was later chosen for an expedition which required further training that he had to travel to receive. He then joined expedition and took advice from Inuit he met along the way. During this period he learned to build igloos which he preferred to tents. While he did not reach his destination he made progress on its goals. He later explored the Arctic coast exploring areas that Franklin had before -or near them.
Journeys to find Franklins Expedition
Dr Rae became the second in command on a expedition to find Franklins taking an overland Arctic route, in 1848. Many other took place Using different routes and at different times, most with limited or no success. One of the rivers they encountered is named after him. Ultimately this expedition failed to find Franklins nor much evidence or information about it. Rae returned to England in 1852, roughly 4 years since it started.
Back in England he was granted an attempt to to return in 1853 and had by March of that year. This attempt would prove far more fruitful.
In 1954, after over a year of travel he met some Inuit who had a gold cap-band. When asked they explained they had found it 10-12 days away at a place where roughly 35 non-Inuit had starved to death. He bought it and offered to buy any similar items.
Several weeks later and only two of his men able to travel he began to turn back, on the way he met several Inuit families who wanted to trade with him. With them they had a small silver platter engraved on the back read âSir John Franklin, K.C.H.â.
They informed him that 4 winters prior some Inuit met no less than 40 non-Inuit who where dragging a boat south, describing a man who fit the description of Francis Crozier. This party of probably Englishwomen communicated by gestures to the Inuit that their ships had been crushed and they were looking to hunt further south. When the same Inuit returned the next spring they found roughly 30 deceaseds, also found were signs of cannibalism.
Rae found this information sufficient to end his search and return to England and report his findings. Ultimately leaving Repulse Bay several months later in August 1854. His journey he taken a roughly a year and a half. He may have been the first European person to discovery the Northern Passage and was certainly one of the first.
Report and Disgrace
Once returned to Britain Dr. Rae made two reports. The the British Admirality he made a full report including the cannibalism, to the public his report excluded the mention of cannibalism. The Admirality, apparently by mistake, released the full report to the public, causing backlash. Lady Jane Franklin was especially affronted and had Charles Dickens write a tirade against Rae published in a magazine. The tirade ignited racist claims that the Inuit were liars, with some accusing they themselves of the cannibalism, claiming Englishmen would not have stooped to such acts. Additionally implying Dr. Rae the fool for believing the Inuit themselves.
Dr. Raeâs reputation was somewhat tarnished, he received a portion of the prize money for the information gathered, but it likely prevented him from being knighted and receiving further recognition in life and for the century after his death.
Post Expeditions, Death, and Legacy
Despite this he planned a polar expedition, building the âIcebergâ. Before he could take this journey the ship was used as a cargo ship and sadly sunk with its crew of 7. The wreck remains lost. Following this he became a founder of the âHamilton Scientific Associationâ which would become the âHamilton Association for the Advancement Literature Science and Artâ. He later worked to establish telegraph lines in America and Canada. He visited Iceland and Greenland. He also married in 1860.
Dr. John Rae died in Kensington, London on July 22, 1893 at the age of 79. He was buried in Kirkwall, Orkney. His death went by mostly unacknowledged due to the backlash at his discovery of the fate of the Franklin Expedition. Later findings would confirm the reports he had been given by Inuit traders and delivered tactfully to Britain. (Author here: Authorities completely bungled his attempts to deliver the news with tact)
He has been noted as perhaps the foremost European Arctic survivalist. Likely in part due to his willingness to learn form local Arctic Peoples and other First Nation Peoples, setting him apart form many of contemporaries.
Since his death his accomplishment have received greater recognition, his former home in Kensington received a Blue Plaque in 2011. On the 200th Anniversary of his birth a statue to him was erected in Stromness, Orkney. Later that year the charity âThe John Rae Societyâ was created to promote his achievements. Additionally, in 2014 at his birthplace of Hall of Celstrain, Orphic, Stromness, Orkney a plaque was placed by Historic Enviroment Scotland.
Also fun facts: His discover of the Northwest Passage is contested with the generally more accepted discovery by the McClure Expedition also created to find Franklins Expedition. McClureâs went significantly worse than Raeâs.
Places named -in English- after Dr. Rae include-
- Rae River
- Rae Strait
- Rae Isthmus
- Mnt. Rae
- Point Rae
- Rae-Edzo was the legal name for several settlements and communities near what is now called BehchokÇ«Ì, Northwest Territories, Canada.
Well thank you for reading. I really enjoyed writing this. I might do a better researched essay on this in the future. Iâm just happy I got to tell you about Dr. John Rae bc tbh his story has become a minor special interest of mine. I just think he was a neat guy.
Now for those who want some absolutely not respectful words about the dead:
Facts about the Franklins (Iâd not call them fun)
my opinion based off the following info: fuckâem. They sucked. (Plz ready Sir/Lady with the maximum amount of contempt you can manage)
As shown in the show this was not Sir first expedition. On his first he lost 11 of 20 men over roughly 3 years. Learning from the first the second went much better, they mapped the area and didnât seem to suffer any major losses -though tbh some of it seems to have been luck.
Lady Jane Franklin -his second wife- while her husband was a Lt. Gov. of Tasmania (1837-1843) took in two aboriginal children one after the other, to âteach them to be civilizedâ. A young boy named Timemendic who she soon gave to her step-daughter (who was 18) who trained him as a servant, until he was deemed bad at that and they tried to send him to an orphanage and then ultimately to work as a deckhand.
Several years she decided to try again and âadoptâ a very young girl called Mary whom she renamed Mathinna, once again she put her step daughter in charge of her. Lady Franklin liked her much more, but ultimately when Lord Franklin was called back to England they abandoned her in an orphanage, the rest of her life was suffice to say filled with abuse and suffering and by 18 she was dead. Her remains were eventually returned to Tasmania.

Hangry.
It happens to the best of us.
Youâre out in the park, having a good time. Youâre skiing or walking, snowshoeing or hiking. Friends or family are all getting along, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the beauty of nature.

And then out of nowhere, hangry hits. You lose your energy, your motivation and your good mood. Â Youâre hungry and a bit angry. Whatâs to be done?
Eat a snack. Have a picnic. Nosh on some yummy trail treats. (Drink water too. Staying hydrated makes everyone happier.) Prepare for your time in the park by packing some snacks or even a meal depending on how long youâll be out. To be safe, donât rely on restaurants or snack shops being open. Facilities can be limited in the national park in the winter.

One more thing to prepare while youâre at home; emergency food. Accidents do happen. Maybe your snowshoe adventure takes longer than anticipated. Maybe thereâs some sort of motor vehicle accident that stops traffic for a while. Having an extra meal or food that doesnât require heat or water can be mood saver or even a trip saver.
Whatâs your favorite snack to bring to the park?
What is your favorite memory of a meal you enjoyed while out hiking or recreating? ~ams

afghan hound!!đŸ
the afghan hound is a sighthound (hunting dog used to track prey mostly using sight) originating from the cold mountains of afghanistan, distinguished by its gorgeous thick, silky coat! the akc describes the breed as, "aloof and dignified aristocrat of sublime beauty" despite this description though, they are still very silly and loyal!!
history
although the afghan is an ancient breed, there is no pictorial record of the afghans. there is a drawing done in 1813 depicting an afghan soldier with a dog that looks similar to the afghan hound of today, indicating that the breed hasn't changed much in appearance even after 200 years! (ă»oă») the afghan hound was brought to britain by military men as a living souvenir from the exotic lands of where they were posted (kinda messed up)
there were a few dogs imported to the uk during the late 1800s-early 1900s like "shahzada", a cream dog whose body was preserved by the british museum and "zardin" who had many characteristics prized in the breed even today such as his âsnowshoeâ feet and the visible saddle on his back. he was so awesome ( ˶ËáËË” ) that he became the model for the first afghan hound breed standard, written in 1910-1920.
in the 1920s the importation of afghans rose. the first afghan hound kennel in the uk had desert (also called steppe or bell murray) type dogs which had sparse, silky and light coats. by contrast, the mountain (also called ghazni) type dogs had heavier coats and greater angulation. a ghazni type dog named "sirdar" became very popular as he looked much like zardin, the previous headline maker. eventually both types were crossbred with each other, creating the afghan hounds we have today!!
appearance
afghan hounds generally weigh about 23-27 kg (50-60 lbs) with a height of about 64-69 cm (25-27 in) with a life expectancy of about 12-18 years. it has a thick, silky, flowing coat which is long in length â the saddle hair, or the hair along the back, is short, close and coarser than the rest of the coat and should (by breed standard) have a smooth appearance.
afghan hounds also have a long, silky topknot and a hood of long hair may form from the top of the neck and flow into the shoulders and withers. the hair on their muzzle and cheeks is very short and fine and the hair on their neck may be almost bare of long hair and become an extension of the saddle.
following the breed standard, a LOT of colours are accepted. accepted colours are black, black and tan, black and silver, blue, cream, blue and cream, red, silver and white. accepted markings are black masks, brindles, brindle and black masks, dominos and brindle and dominos!
temperament
afghan hounds are independent, dignified, and aloof but are affectionate and extremely loyal to the humans they have bonded with! ᥣđ© this loyalty can make it difficult for an adult afghan to adjust to a new home though, but it can make them fairly easy to housetrain because they want to please their owners àŽŠà”àŽŠàŽż(Ë” âąÌ Ꭰ- Ë” )

grooming
afghan hound pups have short, fuzzy coats that require little maintenance. it doesnt stay that way though à«źâ ï» âá as the long, silky coat of an adult afghan requires regular grooming. HOURS of brushing per week (not daily; phew!) is needed to maintain a smooth coat free of debris, mats and tangles. regular bathing, with shampoo and conditioner, is also required to keep its hair soft and silky. what a diva! (ăŁ- âž - Ï)

health
afghan hounds are prone to developing hypothyroidism (condition causing decrease in thyroid hormone production), necrotic myelopathy (loss of myelin from the spinal cord, can result in paralysis), sensitivity to anaesthesia and cortisone (vets will help guide afghan owners towards the most appropriate anaesthesia options), gastric dilatation volvulus (gdv; often known as âbloatâ, a condition where the stomach twists, trapping the contents and gases), panosteitis (a painful, inflammatory bone disease) and laryngeal paralysis (a progressive paralysis of the larynx).
they may also develop eye problems and hip dysplasia, which, by responsible breeders, are conditions tested for along with a thyroid evaluation.

exercise
afghans are sighthounds, bred to hunt and chase prey by sight, so they have a strong instinct to run off in pursuit of anything perceived as prey, causing walking off leash to be not advisable. short walks do not provide enough exercise for this athletic breed so ideally, an afghan hound should have the opportunity to run several times a week for at least two hours in a large, enclosed area. afghans are tall, lean, and strong, which makes them excellent jumpers, so their exercise area must have a high, secure fence! â©^Ï^â©

training
as stated earlier they are very loyal to their owners and are eager to please them and are quite easy to house train. teaching afghans general commands is sufficient training, although no amount of training will overcome the breeds hunting instinct to break off on a high-speed chase unfortunately Ê
(ââżâ) Ê

fun fact: the afghan hounds long fur was originally developed to protect them from the harsh climate of the mountainous regions of afghanistan, acting as insulation!! à«ź âą ï» - á

This was supposed to be posted ages ago but I procrastinated on it because I couldn't write the nuances in English right, so have this (possibly) terribly written post about snowshoe evolutionary history.
The image above is a bit outdated, and none of these names are permanent for now.
A species of genetically-modified, rodent-like mammal, called a tiomouse, is abandoned on Tiomia. They are the only vertebrates left there, so they find themselves in a world with endless food and no competition. They were herbivores that mainly ate 'grass'.
After 'trees' and predators appear, some browsing tiomice become arboreal and turn into screechers. They were frugivorous animals that usually lived in groups of 20-100 individuals and communicated with each other using high pitched calls.
After ~50 mya, a species of screecher (specifically from the croakape genus) learn that they can use auditory mimicry and their large numbers to scare away small carnivores from their kills. The protein gained from the meat and the teamwork required to execute this theft properly is a massive boost to the species' intelligence. After they become more omnivorous and began to actively hunt, the swarmers appeared.
A population of unusually smart swarmers discover that they can use sticks and stones to hunt more efficiently and process their prey, and in only a few mya turn from mesopredators (trappers) to apex predators (dropwolves). They were named for their hunting strategy of using bait to lure prey into special areas, where a group waited until the right moment to drop down and swarm them.
As the climate cooled and the taiga's range dwindled, some dropwolves were forced to evolve to become good walkers again in order to travel between strands of forest, and some populations of these 'terrestrial dropwolves' evolved to almost entirely lose their arboreality. Although many different clades adopted different hunting strategies, the ancestors of the snowshoes used stones to dig out ditches, shoved sharp sticks into the bottom, and placed layers of moss and grass at the top (punjiwolves).
One of these punjiwolves over-specialized for intelligence, trading off nearly all of their muscular strength and speed for complex groups, extremely efficient traps, and faster ways to transmit information, as well as forming a symbiosis with the ancestors of pobuivai in order to traverse greater distances. These punjiwolves evolved into snowshoes, and they are the most successful and wide-spread species of the punjiwolf genus.

Chapter 3: Rengoku Kyojuro
reader and kyojuro meet for the first time
wc: 2595
After the first mission, the days seemed like they were moving in double time. Months had passed, and it was mid-January already. Your family was right, once the missions started, they never ended. By this time you had already progressed to tsuchinoto. You wrote your family via letter somewhat frequently, but between missions, moving from village to village and wisteria house to wisteria house, and reading the Earth breathing journals, you had little time to spare. You missed their presence, but had grown accustomed to the solitude. It gave you time to think, time to grow. You had even added a few entries to the Earth journals, detailing a few demons you encountered and how you beat them (the clone demon was fitting for this).
This snowy day was no different. You had spent the night in yet another wisteria house. Outside the snow came down relentlessly, covering all of the ground and steadily accumulating. You didnât mean to stay at this house for longer than a day, but were essentially snowed in by the weather. Instead of informing you of a new mission, Kimi advised you to stay at the house until further notice. So here you sat quietly sipping tea, journaling when a knock appeared at the door.
âCome in,â you called out softly, not bothering to look up.
âAh, Miss Shizen, I have your dinner,â the woman who ran the house said.
You scurried up to your feet to grab the tray from her.
âThank you!â
âI hope the house felt warmer today, I just added more logs to the fire.â
âYes, the fire you lit last night kept me warm as I fell asleep, today as well. I appreciate you all for doing that at my request. I grew up in a wisteria house, so I understand sometimes guestsâ requests can be a bit obnoxious.â
âNonsense,â she dismissed with the wave of her hand. âYouâre a slayer, yet you grew up in a wisteria house as well?â
âYes, I come from a long line of slayers, but my family who werenât in the corps, or retired, run the house.â
âThatâs wonderful. Hopefully my house reminds you of home then, at the least.â
âYou have a wonderful home, I thank you again for housing me.â
âItâs the very least I can do. My husband comes, I mean came, from a line of slayers. I understand the hardships you all face,â she says solemnly. Without even needing to ask, you understand what she means. âWell, enjoy your food.â
You thank her again as she leaves. A pang of grief strikes you as you think about the woman. She had been kind and cared for you the moment you arrived, not to mention her cooking had been outstanding. She had one child from the looks of it, a young boy that ran around the estate helping her out. You frowned as you ate the food she prepared.
âSquawk! Shizen Y/n, squad 13 requires assistance two hours Southeast! 7 demons reported and possibly more! Meet with the flame pillar, Rengoku Kyojuro for mission directions!â
Kimi swoops down and delivers her message. You immediately jump to your feet. Holy shit⊠A hashira! Wait a minute, 7 demons?! Those evil bastards are teaming up! You thought to yourself. Kimi pecks at the bowl of rice you left on the ground as you run around the room, changing into your uniform and pulling on your snowshoes. You stuff your journal into your backpack, chug the last of your tea, and attach your sword to your side. You swiftly pull on your dark green haori.
âOkay Kimi! Give me directions!â
----------
You had never run faster in your entire life. By the time you arrive just outside the village, your lungs felt like they had been lit on fire. You decided to take a breather and walk the rest of the way as Kimi scouted ahead to look for the hashira. As you strolled through the village, you kept a firm grasp on your blade. You looked into alleyways and behind houses and shops to see if you could find any clues. A discarded womanâs scarf on the ground caught your eye, and you kneeled down to inspect it.
âThe demons we are looking for have been exclusively targeting men! I do not think the scarf belongs to one of our victims!â
âAH!â You dropped the scarf and jumped around. Standing before you was the owner of the booming voice.
âJesus! You scared me.â
âApologies! I am Rengoku Kyojuro, flame hashira!â
The blond-haired man, who could be no more than just a year older than you, eagerly stuck his hand out for you to shake. You took it hesitantly.Â
âShizen Y/n, tsuchinoto rank.â
âYou must be the help I sent for. Follow me.â He spun around and started walking into the treeline.
âI have members of squad 13 currently speaking with the families of the missing men to see if we can get any eye witness accounts or other clues that could lead us to where the demon is. Squad 13 only consists of three other slayers, so weâre a bit understaffed for this mission. I assume your crow briefed you on the details?â
âYes,â you gulped. âAre there really 7 demons?â
âYes, and possibly more!â
He spoke so casually, yet it did nothing to calm you. You know from your family that hashira are only deployed on missions that lower rank slayers are struggling to complete.
âIs it possible itâs one of the twelve kizuki?â
âAs far as my investigations have led me to believe, itâs not one. That doesnât mean these demons arenât powerful, though.â
âAre there anymore slayers arriving to help?â
âMy crow only informed me of one other slayer arriving, which would be you. We will have to fight valiantly if we want to come out the other side of this battle!â
You wiped your hands on your pants as you walked, just now realizing how sweaty they were. âWhere are we going without the squad?â
âWeâre going to follow the tracks Iâve found. Keep your eyes open for danger, I believe the blood art of the demons is camouflage, so youâll need to pay extra attention to your surroundings.â
You nod your head in affirmation, keeping your sword at the ready. You and Kyojuro walk silently through the dark forest. Eventually, you arrive at a fork in the path where there are human-like tracks stamped into the snow. You silently follow Kyojuro, watching over your shoulder for enemy attacks. You follow along the trail for sometime before he sticks his arm out to stop you. He points at the ground to show the tracks have suddenly vanished.Â
âWhere could they have gone?â
âIâm not sure, the closest tree is over 30 feet away, it would be impossible to jump to.â
You look around the small clearing youâve arrived in. Thereâs nothing but trees that slightly shield you from the snow falling gently to the ground. Suddenly, a figure can be seen emerging from the darkness. You bring your sword out in front of you in a defensive pose.
âRengoku-sama, look up ahead!â
The figureâs legs can be seen now: itâs wearing a demon slayer corps uniform? The rest of the person emerges and itâs a fellow slayer with their arms up.
âIsozaki-san? Whatâs going on?â
âForgive me, Mr. Rengoku,â the young boy cries out. âSheâs got my neck.â
You tilt your head in confusion until a tall demon emerges from behind him, easily 7 feet tall. Sheâs got wild eyes and a forked tongue like a snake sticking out.
âMy favorite meal for me and my girls: young slayers!â
She studies you two carefully.Â
âHmm⊠We prefer men, but I wonât pass up the chance to kill any slayer. Iâll eat the man and the girl will go to my daughters! Dinner is ready my dears,â she calls behind her.
Shrieking can be heard from beyond her and six smaller demons come crawling out the woods. Well, you thought it was six demons, until one large, grotesque, serpentine body connected to the six heads resting on its âshoulders.â They all bare their fangs and hiss at you.Â
âDrop the young man at once,â Kyojuro shouts.
The mother demon only laughs at his words before the sound of a crunching can be heard. The young slayerâs head now wobbles at an uncomfortable angle and there is a dull look in his eyes. She merely chuckles before flinging the limp body towards the children. They instantly squeal in delight before devouring him.
Your stomach lurches at the sight, but you remain steady. Youâre not going to let the demon intimidate you.
âShizen-san, Iâll take care of the mother demon, you focus on the children,â Kyojuro whispers to you.
You nod and back away from him into the darkness. With the children still eating, Kyojuro takes the chance and charges towards the mother. She lets out a shrill shriek before they begin dueling. You stalk around the ring of the clearing to hopefully sneak up on the children. The heads all knock each other around, selfishly stealing bites from the others. A large tail rests behind them.
You lunge out of the darkness and slice off the tail, effectively immobilizing the six-headed beast. They all let out a cry of pain and the mother demon stops fighting Kyojuro to look at the scene unfolding.Â
She merely laughs at the anguish her children are in. âYou fool! That mistake will cost you.â
You back away as the children demon starts to violently convulse.
âWhat the fu-â
It screeches and feathers erupt from every place on the body. Where you cut off the tail has welded itself back together, small feet now protruding from the skin. On each side, large wings burst from it and surround you. Its blood demon art wasnât camouflage, itâs shapeshifting! The mother demon laughs again and you can hear her and Kyojuro fighting once more.Â
You hack furiously at the demon, but its regeneration speed is too fast for your movements. It seems like it can heal six-times as fast as a regular demon, no doubt due to it being six demons in one body. Youâre missing every swing you take at the heads.Â
âEarth breathing form one: undulating field!â
You unleash a series of slashes at the demon, cutting off several heads in the process. You stop when you realize the heads just keep regenerating faster than you can cut them. The children demon spreads its wings and flies into the air, inbound towards Kyojuro and its mother. Kyojuroâs back has been to you and the demon this entire time, so he has no idea it's coming right at him.
âRengoku-sama, watch out!â
You run towards him, but your exclamation throws him off his rhythm when he turns around. The mother takes this opportunity to grab him by the neck, lifting him into the air.
âEarth breathing fo-â
âOh no you donât.â The mother demon swats you down like a common house fly sending your sword flying out of your hands, and you straight to the ground.
You groan out as your head bounces on impact. The children demon comes barrelling up to you and pins you underneath its weight. One of the heads reaches out and clamps down on your arm with its mouth. You furiously shake it off, trying to loosen its hold.Â
âIâve got you both incapacitated now! Playtime is over, time to eat!â
You frantically search for a way out. Your sword is too far out of reach and Kyojuro is still in the captives of the mother demon. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a new figure running up to the scene.Â
âLeave them alone!â
The young girl raises up her sword and drives it into the six-headed body. Two heads are effectively cut off and the one biting down on you releases you, crying out from the pain. You roll out from underneath it before it realizes.Â
âAha! Perfect timing!â
The girl lends you a hand and pulls you to your feet.Â
âThank you.â
She flashes a smile at you. âSave it for after the battle.â
You turn back to the demon. Once again yelling âEarth breathing form one: undulating field!â
You take a step back and use the full range of your sword to unleash one singular slash that cuts through all six heads at once. The body crumbles to the ground.
Several feet away, Kyojuro and the girl are battling the mother demon. They both take turns slashing at her, trying to overwhelm her. When she makes the mistake of trying to reach down at the girlâs feet to grab her, Kyojuro runs up her back side and slices off her head. Success! She falls to the ground in a cloud of ash.Â
All three of you lower your swords and begin catching your breath.
----------
Youâre helping the cleanup crew in the village. Multiple houses had been destroyed the past few days by the demons and while you couldnât fix them all overnight, you could at least help pick up peopleâs lives from the rubble. Kyojuro and the girl approach you during this.
âShizen-san.â You look up.
âOh, hello! Are you both doing alright?â
âYes, we both got water and were treated for injuries,â the girl says.
âI donât think I ever caught your nameâŠâ
âTsuga Yuma, and you are?â
âShizen Y/n. Thank you, Tsuga-san, for saving my life.â
âDonât mention it, I hope you return the favor to someone else someday.â
You nod and she walks off. Itâs just you and Kyojuro now.Â
âDid they find the other slayer from squad 13?â
âNo, sadly. They have yet to find any sign of him.â
You frown, hoping something turns up.
âShizen-san,â Kyojuro starts. âIâm very impressed with your job on this mission. We would not have been able to complete it without your help. You are a very strong slayer, Shizen.â
You blush at his compliment. âT-thank you, Rengoku-sama.â
âIâm curious, you use Earth breathing?â
âOh! Yes, itâs a generational breathing style from my family. Itâs derived from stone,â you explain.
âSo itâs true! Iâve heard of your family before.â
âYou have?â
âYes, flame breathing is also a familial breathing style. Iâve heard stories from my family about the Earth breathers. Our ancestors must have come into contact at some point! Hopefully they are smiling down knowing weâve met now.âÂ
You chuckle and nod in agreement, he beams a smile at you before focusing in on your arm.
âShizen-san, your arm!â
You follow his eyes and just now become aware of the bleeding gash on your bicep. Thereâs practically a hole in you from the demon biting so hard. Your hand instinctively comes up to apply pressure to the wound.Â
âMedic! We have someone that needs attention over here.âÂ
A kakushi comes running over immediately and gently grabs your arm to inspect the gash.Â
âYouâll need stitches, could you unbutton your uniform so we can get to your arm?â
Your eyes widen at the request and you blush as you look up, Kyojuro is still standing there. His face also blushes?
âUh, Iâll be leaving now Shizen-san. Continue to master your swordsmanship! Until we meet again.â
With that, the blond turns on his feet and walks away into the snowy darkness. His colorful hair and flame-patterned haori stick out like a sore thumb amongst the white expanse, and you canât help but be reminded of a lantern in the dark.

Along the shorelines of Deep Creek Lake, the park has a sandy beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Lifeguards are present during the summer months, ensuring a safe swimming experience. The park is a great beach getaway, offering restrooms, picnic areas, a playground, and grills.
I usually visit ocean beaches, so swimming in a lake beach was a new experience for me. Stepping into the water, I felt the gradual slope, which is ideal for kids. Enjoying the cool, fresh water while the kids built sandcastles made for one of the best beach days we've had in a long time. Unlike ocean beaches, Deep Creek State Park Maryland only allows swimming in designated areas, where the calm waters create a peaceful and rejuvenating atmosphere.
2. Water Adventures
Visitors can find an assortment of water activities at Deep Creek Lake State Park Maryland. These exciting adventures include:
Boating: One of the most loved activities at Deep Creek State Park, with access to 3,900 acres of lake. The park features a public boat ramp, allowing easy access to explore this hidden gem surrounded by stunning mountains. My husband rented a boat, and we set out for an adventurous ride, making it a paradise for watersports enthusiasts.
Fishing: Deep Creek Lake is home to many fish species, including Bass, Northern Pike, Trout, and Walleye. Anglers can fish from the boat or along the shore, though a fishing license is required.
Kayaking: Kayaking is my absolute favorite! Paddling through the water, surrounded by nature, was the peaceful escape I needed.
Tubing, Water Skiing, and Wakeboarding: These were the most thrilling parts of our visit, offering high-speed excitement on the water.
3. Hiking and Wildlife Observation
With numerous scenic trails, Deep Creek State Park is an ideal spot for hiking, biking, and even snowshoeing. The park offers trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced hikers. Some of the most popular trails include:
Meadow Mountain Trail â 5.5 miles
Indian Turnip Trail â 4.5 miles
Cherry Creek Loop â 3 miles
Beckmanâs Trail â 2 miles
Brant Mine Trail â 0.5-1 mile
Additionally, Deep Creek State Park ranks among the best places for birdwatching in Maryland. You can spot bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, and many other native birds.
4. Camping
We planned an overnight stay to experience the highly recommended camping at Deep Creek State Park. The park offers 112 campsites, including mini cabins, yurts, and traditional campsites. The campgrounds feature amenities such as restrooms, electricity, picnic tables, fire rings, and water fill-ups. We reserved a mini cabin, which comfortably accommodated four of us (me, my husband, and our two kids). We truly enjoyed the setting, exploring the surroundings, and grilling fish for dinner. Deep Creek State Park is one of the best camping spots in Maryland.
5. Hunting
For hunting enthusiasts, Deep Creek State Park offers a designated 550-acre hunting area. Hunters must take extra care due to the nearby hiking and biking trails to ensure the safety of all visitors. The park provides a detailed hunting map with essential guidelines.
6. Discovery Center
A highlight of Deep Creek State Park, the Discovery Center showcases the natural and cultural heritage of Western Maryland. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this interactive space, which includes:
Indoor classrooms with visual and audio technology highlighting nature and environmental resources.
An animal exhibit featuring aquariums and birds of prey.
Historical artifacts, artwork, and photographs showcasing the regionâs history, including coal mining and extraction.
Educational sessions focusing on wildlife conservation and ecology.
Final Thoughts
Visiting Deep Creek State Park was an unforgettable, fun, and educational experience for our family. Living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we wanted to explore the Western Mountains, and this getaway exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed every moment and are already planning our next visit.

Unraveling the Secrets of High-Performance Women's Outdoor Gear
Outdoor adventures are more than just a trendâthey are a lifestyle. Whether you're hiking through scenic trails, camping under the stars, or engaging in adrenaline-pumping activities like rock climbing or skiing, having the right gear is essential. Comfort, durability, and style all play a vital role in choosing the perfect attire. The right apparel can make a significant difference in your outdoor experience, keeping you warm, dry, and protected while still looking great.
Understanding Outdoor Apparel
When it comes to venturing outdoors, you need clothing that is designed to withstand various weather conditions and rugged terrains. Unlike casual clothing, outdoor wear is made using specialized fabrics and technology to enhance performance. Features such as moisture-wicking materials, insulation, UV protection, and waterproof coatings are crucial components of high-quality outdoor attire.
Key Features to Look for in Outdoor Wear
1. Weather Resistance
Outdoor conditions can be unpredictable, so choosing weather-resistant clothing is essential. Look for waterproof and windproof jackets, insulated layers, and breathable fabrics that can keep you comfortable in different climates. Many brands incorporate Gore-Tex, a highly durable material that provides exceptional waterproofing and breathability.
2. Moisture-Wicking Properties
Whether youâre hiking in humid conditions or participating in high-intensity activities, moisture-wicking fabrics help keep you dry by drawing sweat away from your skin. Materials like merino wool, polyester, and nylon are excellent options for maintaining dryness and preventing discomfort.
3. Layering System
Dressing in layers is a fundamental rule in outdoor wear. The three-layer system includes:
Base Layer: Helps regulate body temperature and wick away moisture.
Mid Layer: Provides insulation to retain body heat.
Outer Layer: Shields against wind, rain, and snow while maintaining breathability. Each layer should work harmoniously to provide maximum comfort and adaptability to changing weather conditions.
4. Flexibility and Mobility
Outdoor activities often require a full range of motion, making flexibility a crucial factor in clothing selection. Opt for stretchable fabrics and articulated designs that allow you to move freely without restriction.
5. Durability and Longevity
Since outdoor apparel is exposed to rough terrains and extreme weather, durability is a top priority. Reinforced stitching, abrasion-resistant materials, and high-quality zippers and seams ensure your clothing withstands wear and tear over time.
Best Outdoor Wear for Different Activities
1. Hiking and Trekking
For hiking enthusiasts, choosing the right apparel ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience. A moisture-wicking base layer, insulated mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell are essential. Additionally, opt for quick-drying pants and sturdy hiking boots for ultimate support and protection.
2. Camping and Backpacking
Camping involves various activities, from setting up tents to gathering firewood. Versatile and functional clothing, such as thermal base layers, fleece jackets, and insulated pants, can help you stay comfortable in fluctuating temperatures. A high-quality down jacket is also a great investment for cold nights.
3. Running and Trail Jogging
For outdoor running, lightweight and breathable fabrics are key. Look for compression leggings, moisture-wicking tops, and weather-resistant running jackets to keep you dry and comfortable. Trail runners should consider shoes with excellent grip and ankle support to navigate uneven terrains safely.
4. Winter Sports
Activities like skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing require specialized apparel to handle extreme cold and wet conditions. Waterproof ski jackets, insulated snow pants, thermal gloves, and moisture-wicking base layers help maintain warmth and dryness in snowy environments.
5. Cycling and Mountain Biking
Cyclists need streamlined apparel that reduces drag and enhances performance. Padded cycling shorts, moisture-wicking jerseys, and windproof jackets improve comfort during long rides. For mountain biking, consider reinforced pants and durable gloves for added protection against scrapes and falls.
Sustainable Outdoor Wear Options
With the rise of environmental consciousness, many brands are now offering sustainable outdoor clothing made from recycled and eco-friendly materials. Brands that use ethical manufacturing practices and incorporate organic cotton, bamboo fibers, and recycled polyester contribute to reducing environmental impact. Opting for sustainable apparel is an excellent way to enjoy nature while preserving it for future generations.
How to Buy Quality Outdoor Wear Online
Shopping for outdoor gear online can be overwhelming with so many options available. To ensure you get the best quality products, keep the following tips in mind:
Read Customer Reviews: Reviews provide insight into the durability, comfort, and performance of a product.
Check Sizing Charts: Different brands may have varying size measurements. Always refer to the size guide before purchasing.
Look for Return Policies: A flexible return policy allows you to exchange or return items if they do not meet your expectations.
Compare Prices: Researching different retailers can help you find the best deals and discounts.
When looking for outdoor wear online, always consider trusted retailers that offer genuine and high-quality products to ensure your investment is worthwhile.
Top Brands for Outdoor Apparel
Several brands have built a reputation for producing top-tier outdoor wear. Some of the most trusted names in the industry include:
The North Face: Known for its high-performance jackets and layering pieces.
Patagonia: A sustainable brand offering eco-friendly outdoor clothing.
Arcâteryx: Specializes in technical outerwear with innovative designs.
Columbia: Offers affordable and reliable outdoor gear.
Marmot: Known for high-quality waterproof and insulated apparel.
Each of these brands has a unique approach to designing outdoor gear, ensuring there is something for everyone, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned adventurer.
Final Thoughts

Whether youâre hiking, running, camping, or engaging in winter sports, the right clothing can make all the difference in ensuring comfort, protection, and style. By focusing on key features such as weather resistance, moisture management, durability, and sustainability, you can find the perfect gear for your next adventure.
Shopping for outdoor wear online provides convenience and access to a wide range of options. Always prioritize quality, functionality, and proper fit when making a purchase. With the right apparel, you can confidently explore the great outdoors and enjoy every moment of your adventure!

Because of a combination of depression, illness(es), too much work, and just plain bad weather, I didn't get outside much or do much of anything active during the last few months of 2024. As you know if you know me outside of social media, that's pretty rare for me. And I don't think I'd realized how much it had been affecting me until Lindsey and I hiked Stukel Mountain: when we got to the top (of a 6,000 foot peak that's a ten-minute drive from my house and has a driveable road all the way to the summit), I felt as euphoric as I have climbing a Mount Whitney or a Mount Shasta. Since then, I've been trying to get out more while avoiding the phone screen and the TV screen as much as possible (except for watching Skeleton Crew, Skeleton Crew is great).
Last weekend, Lindsey and I got out together on Saturday to do our few-times-a-year ski loop from Great Meadow to Lake Of The Woods and back. This is a four-mile loop made easier by the fact that at the midway point there are (veggie) burgers and alcohol. This time around, the route required a little improvising because of the *extremely* solid snow and ice, but we made it.
Because it was a three-day weekend, I took a day off on Sunday and then on Monday indulged in another yearly ritual: snowshoeing north of Highway 140 to the Summit Shelter, starting and enjoying a fire in the old stove, and then bushwhacking back to the car. It was great, and, like every time I go up there, once I had the fire going I was almost consumed by a desire to stay there and sleep the night away in fire-warmed coziness. One of these years, I'm going to actually check with the Ranger Station and see if and how one is allowed to overnight at all the nearby shelters and give it a try. Maybe this year? Who knows!
Anyway, it's nice to be outside again.

Knowing your itinerary will help simplify clothing choices and should be one of the first factors to consider while planning out your packing list. Create a Packing List Now with the weather and your itinerary in mind, itâs time to make your list! The key to packing light for winter is creating a strategic packing list. Start with your must-haves, like winter clothes and accessories, then build from there. Pick a color story for your outfits and create a simple, curated capsule wardrobe for your trip. Itâs really all about layering hereâcreate a system that allows for maximum versatility so you easily mix and match everything. Pack Smart with Packing Cubes For your winter trip, packing cubes are a game-changer, especially compression packing cubes. They help organize your clothes, keep your packing light, and maximize space in your suitcase. We recommend packing them by item typeâŠpants in one, tops in another, etc. â and utilize various sizes of cubes to maximize the space in your bag. Winning Carry-on Suitcase Your main suitcase is also an important consideration. If you want to travel light with a strategically packed suitcase, we definitely recommend a carry on. Packing in just a carry on also means less time in the airport and no chance of lost luggage. One of Erinâs favorite carry-onâs â This suitcase by Beis. She says itâs very similar to her Tumi suitcase but for a fraction of the price. Whether you are driving or flying, this suitcase and a mini weekender tote bag will be all that you need.  What to Pack for Winter Travel Now that weâve covered how to prepare for your winter trip, letâs talk about the specific items youâll want to pack inside of your suitcase and mini weekender tote. Merino wool is a top choice for warmth, moisture-wicking, and breathability (make sure itâs the soft version and not scratchy). Your base layer is ideal for layering under your clothes and will keep you dry and extra warm during outdoor activities. Cashmere (pictured above) is another amazing optionâit can be three times warmer than wool! Erin loves both fabrics for skiing and winter travel, but prefers cashmere for its added warmth, and luxurious texture and softness. Weâve linked our favorites below! Make sure to choose a top that youâre comfortable wearing on its own in case you need to remove your extra layers throughout the day! We love to pack a sporty and chic cashmere hoodie. A cozy jacket and a tailored, flattering blazer are great, versatile pieces to pack as well.
