Ooooh this is from a while back in summer. Was participating in an author/illustrator event for fun by a comics association, and one of the prompts was "Robot + Cactus".

Needless to say I knew the exact people for the job.

You ever get a craving for a certain art medium and have to scramble for something to do with it? Yeah same. ANYWAY this took a week and it kicked my ass and when my dad walked in he said “Is that perspective collage? Do you hate yourself???” And tbh yeah I was a little insane for that but it was funnnnn and I think I nailed the vibe I was going for!

(Also I spent so long picking out the products on the shelves and I put a lot of thought into it yet you can’t see 80% of them but at least I know)

Thinking about this as a fan of generally older media that how many have a bunch of references that they just took for granted? Like how now days if I movie or show references something (usually on the nose too) it immediately dates it.

How many references are in a bunch of beloved shows and films that just are lost/go over the head of the modern viewer- that it was taken for granted that someone would know it. And the movie or show remains but whatever was referenced or joked about is no longer as common and just seen as a quirk within it.

Weirdly enough what sparked this was thinking about the whole bit of Snoopy pretending to be the flying ace fighting the red baron and how as a kid I just thought it was a funny think he did etc but it’s an actual thing.

Also here is an interview snippet which I thought was interesting. I've never thought much about what his creative process might have been like. Also, I didn't realise that the panels he drew on were so much larger than what ended up in print. I mean, it makes sense, but I guess I always just assumed he drew up the squares exactly the way they looked in the end.
