So, it seems I’m a dog-owner (or dog-parent) now? Say hello to Cedar!
Tumblr media
So... I want to be clear about something: I’ve never been a dog-person. In fact, I’ve always liked cats more so than dogs. And yet, here we are.
At no point did I go out looking to get a dog. No trips to a store, breeder, or any kind of shelter were made. Cedar’s former owner simply up and abandoned this 5-month old puppy. And given the fact that local shelters here in the state of Arizona (USA) are overflowing with stray cats/dogs... I absolutely couldn’t give him up to a shelter.
Tumblr media
And so, I decided to bring Cedar to my little apartment. He’s 5 months old, and he’s already growing big and strong lol. Now I'm trying to figure out vet visits and neutering (yup, the last owner didn’t get him vaccinated, or fixed). So, it’s up to me (being the responsible new-dog-owner that I am) to now take care of him.
One of the things I’ve noticed about Cedar in the 24+ hours he’s spent at my apartment (new apartment, new humans, all the new smells! lol) is that he’s SUPER smart. Like seriously: I bought bells that can hang on doors and I hung bells on my apartment’s front door. I told him “potty” and rang the bells. I did it a few times. It took him a total of TWO tries in a span of 5 hours. Bruh... he figured it out. He now rings the bell when it’s time to go to the bathroom! It took him 5 hours, by himself, to figure this out.
He’s a good boy. 9 out of 10 times, he always listens to commands. I’ve been able to teach him “Sit”, and “Stay” within 24 hours already! He’s a super-high-energy doggo. But, I don’t mind. Ever since he came into my life, I’ve been getting a LOT of fresh air and exercise.
The ONLY real problem we’re having right now (and please message me if you have any advice about it) is crate/kennel training: The kennel that was his default one was... something that I personally believe had a lot of traumatic memories attached with it for him. After all, he was driven around all over the country by the last owner just stuck inside the little kennel inside the back of an SUV for the most part. Then, he gets to stay put in one place for a few months. Then, at 5 months old, he gets put back into that same kennel (now kinda small for him) and gets driven around again (literally panicking and whining the entire drive)... and gets brought to a new apartment, with humans he barely knows. I get it... it’s a stressful experience and the only constant throughout all of it was his (now small) kennel. So, I decided to dump his old kennel to the curb, and got him a new (bigger) kennel. He still whines and cries... but, he’s no longer having panic attacks any longer. So, I guess now this is the biggest issue: the crying at night. He doesn’t want to sleep in there. But, I know it takes time, so I just need to wait it out...? Like I said, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Ooooh boi. I'm kind of drunk and I was not prepared like, "ah, our office Christmas party had food but not in a way that will sustain you drinking from 4 to midnight" and I don't know how to handle this now. 🤣🙃🙃
